“Have I risked everything for nothing?”

“Should this remain fantasy?

These are questions I’ve asked myself more than once.

Listen to most people describe what they’re looking for in a partner, and you’ll usually hear things like…

• Kindness

• Emotional intelligence

• Support

• Humour

• Understanding

Nobody blinks twice.

But ask for:

• Leadership

• Responsibility

• Authority

• Service

• Devotion

and suddenly the word ‘selfish’ can appear.

But why?

Common Submissive Guilt

“Am I making someone do the emotional work for me?”

“Am I hiding behind someone else?”

“Am I using another person as a fantasy dispenser?”

Common Dominant Guilt

“Am I controlling?”

“Am I taking too much?”

“Am I selfish for wanting authority?”

These questions are understandable, but they also overlook something important…

As an un-partnered submissive, I am already ‘self-domming’ by default.

Conversely, a single dominant is already ‘self-subbing’ whenever life requires it.

We are both perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, which suggests we are not looking for somebody to complete a damaged or missing part of us. Rather, we are expressing a preference, a choice. A way we would rather relate to another person.

That’s different.

Yet recognising it as a preference doesn’t make life any easier.

The real question isn’t whether our desires are selfish; it’s what we are prepared to sacrifice in order to live them authentically.

Because lots of kinksters have quietly paid a price...

That’s where the guilt appears, not because submission or domination is selfish, but because the consequences can feel selfish.

People put in:

• a title

• a collar

• a command

• a protocol

• a scene

...and expect

submission to drop out the bottom.

Clunk.

Then they kick the machine when it doesn’t.

• “I inserted one (1) leather waistcoat. Where is my devotion?”

• “Have you tried turning your submissive off and on again?”

• “Error 404: Submission Not Found.”

• “Please insert additional trust.”

• “Selected item unavailable.”

• “Coin returned.”

And someone repeatedly pressing the buttons while the display flashes:

D/s isn’t transactional.

It isn’t a vending machine where you insert a collar and receive devotion, or a crop and receive domination.

Protocol isn’t intimacy, commands aren’t trust, and implements aren’t authority.

The same applies to submissives.

Throwing yourself at a Dominant’s feet and hoping for enlightenment isn’t much different from demanding obedience without earning it.

Fantasy gets away with this because fantasy asks nothing of us.

Reality returns the coin.

Many never find it because…

It’s why fantasy is so often better than reality, and why role-play, or trying a Fifty Shades power dynamic for the first time, can go from intoxicating to faintly horrifying in record time.

Thinking obedience, acquiescence, or a desire to please can fill the throne is a mistake. They can’t.

Obedience should be a side effect, not the destination.

What You’re Actually Asking For

From a submissive's perspective, there needs to be some skin in the game.

I want a genuine part of me invested. I can autopilot obedience in a three-way with Ronald McDonald and Grimace. I'd probably still refuse, mind you.

(Although I'm not entirely sure Grimace has any business being involved in a three-way power exchange.)

However, my point is simple:

Wanting and expecting obedience without understanding the conditions that create it gets you nowhere.

Why The Throne Stays Empty

Here’s where I think it goes wrong…

• Wanting Authority Without Responsibility •

You want to be the authority in my life, but only when it suits you.

Wanting to be the all-powerful Oz, but disappearing the moment the role demands anything more than hot sex and a sturdy presence.

One of my shorter-lived (and narcissistic) ex-Doms could not, or would not, take responsibility for anything. Yet somehow he managed thousands of employees, mergers and acquisitions, and life as a board executive and CEO.

Visit me after I'd collapsed with kidney stones and been taken to A&E by ambulance?

No. It would take too long to get across London.

Had I been a walking fireside chat, board meeting, or a networking dinner, he’d have fought his way across the city.

I wasn’t.

I was just his submissive.

And once I realised I couldn't rely on him, I stopped seeing him as an authority.

Honestly, responsibility gets me wetter faster than most Doms.

• Wanting Obedience Before Trust •

If you’re not creating trust, I’m not invested; I’m on autopilot.

Create something with me.

Test me, observe me, push me, invest in me, direct me.

Too many people want the obedience without doing any of the work that inspires it. They want the standing ovation before the performance.

They focus on the marionette and ignore the strings, then they wonder why it never comes to life.

Don't just pull the strings. Make me want to move.

• Wanting Devotion Without Consistency •

Asking me to devote myself to you, but when I need you, you’re not there.

Real devotion isn’t half-hearted or play-on-demand.

Inconsistency breeds doubt, insecurity, and defensiveness. Naturally, if you’re not looking after us, guess who is? We are. And we’re exceptionally good at building our own walls.

Unless you've got a spare trebuchet in your shed (an excellent euphemism), don't help us build the walls and then complain that they're there.

Hot and cold might be exciting in a fantasy, but in reality it’s exhausting. If inconsistency is your thing, that’s fine; just don’t expect devotion in return.

No cat will ever love you if you only feed it sometimes. It will simply acquire ten other homes and still look starved.

I’m not saying submissives are like cats.

I’m saying neither of us should be surprised by the outcome.

I’ve been doing this for a very long time. I’ve made mistakes, learned a few things, ignored red flags, given advice I’ve never taken, and occasionally done things I absolutely swore I’d never do again.

So, for Odalisque’s 100th post, here are 100 things I’ve learned from being a submissive woman.

40. A Dom who takes responsibility can be surprisingly rare.

41. I’d far sooner be single than settle.

42. BDSM and D/s mean vastly different things to different people.

43. Dominants can be lost people too.

44. Power exchanges need to be created; they don’t just manifest or maintain themselves.

45. Being a Dom, sub, or anything in between can be surprisingly lonely.

46. Prepare for compartmentalisation and some tough self-love in poly dynamics.

47. Indifference is the opposite of love, not hate. Hate is still an investment.

48. Before sending an epic manifesto, imagine receiving it.

49. Anger towards a partner often reveals something unresolved in yourself.

50. The less you understand yourself, the harder it is for anyone else to build something meaningful with you.

51. When all you get are monosyllabic texts and crumbs of communication, they're probably not the silent type; they're just not that into you.

52. Sharing a kink doesn’t mean sharing values.

53. Giving me a task isn’t sexy or dominant; what’s behind it is.

54. Kink experience can be taught. Emotional maturity, kindness, wisdom, and responsibility are much harder to learn.

55. A submissive with boundaries is far sexier than one without them.

You have been looking forward to it for weeks, maybe even months. You have counted the days, imagined the moment, replayed the possibilities in your mind.

Finally, you are going to experience it.

Maybe you are about to take control with a new partner. Maybe you are preparing to surrender, trust, and step into a dynamic you have been longing for. Maybe it is a scene you have carefully negotiated, discussed, and anticipated so much that it has started to feel almost inevitable.

The date is set, expectations have been made clear and boundaries have been discussed. All that remains is the beautiful, effortless unfolding of connection, chemistry, power exchange, and that wonderful feeling of finding yourself exactly where you are meant to be.

In your imagination, everything aligns.

You arrive looking exactly how you hoped you would. You say exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment.

Everything is going to be perfect.

We tell ourselves there will be absolutely no surprise period arriving at the worst possible moment. No stomach cramps. No last-minute work crisis. No family drama. No train cancellations. No journey from hell. No rain so determined it somehow manages to travel upwards into your umbrella.

Yet life has a habit of reminding us that the best things in life do not always come to those who wait.

I have walked away from scenes before feeling completely bewildered, on the verge of tears. Not just disappointed, but genuinely confused. The kind of confusion where you are left thinking:

What just happened?

How did I get from “I cannot wait for this” to “What on earth am I doing?”

Because sometimes the anticipation is incredible, the fantasy is perfect, but the reality falls apart within minutes, and that can leave us asking some uncomfortable questions.

Welcome to real-life kink.

The truth is, terrible scenes happen. Awkward scenes happen, and disappointing scenes happen. Even experienced people with years of knowledge, communication, and self-awareness behind them can find themselves in situations that just do not work.

It does not mean you failed. It does not mean you are not submissive or dominant, and it does not mean you have somehow misunderstood yourself or your orientation was all a fantasy.

It means you are dealing with real people in real situations, and sometimes, despite everyone's best intentions, that reality looks very different from the fantasy…

More Than Two People

Joining Someone Else’s Story

Whether you are the unicorn, part of an enthusiastic couple, attending a larger group scene, navigating polyamory, or reluctantly trying to please a partner who wants to “open up the relationship”, any dynamic involving more than two people comes with one unavoidable reality:

More people means more variables.

More personalities, desires, insecurities, expectations, and more opportunities for things to go wrong. That does not mean these dynamics cannot be wonderful. Many are. But they are rarely as simple as they appear in fantasy.

Some people avoid playing with couples altogether because it can feel like twice the work. If the couple are not completely solid, or one partner is significantly more invested than the other, problems can emerge very quickly.

Then there is the practical reality. Threesomes, for example, often sound wonderfully balanced in theory, but somebody frequently ends up feeling left out. Perhaps that is simply the curse of the number three. Dividing attention equally, both emotionally and physically, is often far harder than people expect.

And then there is the infamous “fresh meat” phenomenon. Anyone who has spent time around the scene will recognise it. A new woman arrives at a party, event, or social gathering and suddenly attracts a level of attention usually associated with someone opening a packet of crisps in a room full of seagulls. It is hardly a biological surprise, but it can create unexpected tensions if long-standing partners suddenly find themselves standing in the shadows.

None of this means group dynamics are doomed to fail, it just means that every additional person brings another set of needs, emotions, desires, expectations, and blind spots into the room. What we sometimes collectively refer to as the ‘group dynamic’.

And that can turn even the most carefully planned scene into something nobody quite anticipated.

The Fantasist Dreamer

Falling In Love With The Fantasy or Potential

Building your partner, or the scene itself, into something straight out of a spy novel is part of the fun.

We create the fantasy. We puppeteer it exactly how we would like it to go. We imagine the words, the reactions, the chemistry, and the perfect dynamic.

The danger comes when the fantasy becomes too rigid, because disappointment can set in very quickly when the other person has not been given your script.

They do not know exactly how you imagined they would respond. They will not necessarily dominate you in the specific way you wanted, submit in the way you hoped, or say exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment.

It is why some heavily planned role-play scenes can end up not living up to expectations. Not because role-play is bad, but because the more detailed the fantasy becomes, the harder it is for reality to compete.

I have learned the hard way that sometimes it is better to arrive with less certainty and more curiosity. Have your boundaries, know what you want, but be flexible, fluid, and leave some room for the other person to surprise you.

But fantasy does not only apply to scenes.

Sometimes we do it with people.

‘Potential’ is something else entirely, and this one I am guilty of myself.

We can take what we are not getting: real domination, submission, love, affection, attention, the feeling of being prioritised, and put it all into the magical word: Potential.

They must have it in them. They just need time. If only...

Everything seems so perfect. Everything seems almost there, but before we know it, we are not falling in love with who someone actually is. We are falling in love with who we believe they could become.

I learned that lesson the hard way…

Hygiene And Perfume

There Are Some Smelly People Out There

In my experience, the worst offenders are often those who proudly announce they never need deodorant. I have discovered this is a highly subjective assessment.

Scenes can be nerve-racking. They can also be surprisingly physical. It is not just the Dominant doing all the work either. Submissives can spend long periods holding awkward positions, kneeling, balancing, stretching, or trying very hard not to wobble.

People sweat. Sometimes a lot.

Now, while there are certainly those who enthusiastically embrace a more natural aroma, or even request it, that is not usually the default expectation when meeting somebody for the first time.

You might be forgiven for thinking basic hygiene would already be in the bag, and for the most part it is. That does not, however, prevent the occasional soul from making enthusiastic use of the in-house facilities immediately after a heavy meal.

Then there is perfume. Scent is a strange thing. One person’s irresistible signature fragrance is another person’s chemical weapon.

Certain perfumes and colognes can drive people wild with desire. Others can clear a room faster than someone saying, “I’ve started a family group chat.”

There are few things more distracting than being edged by Miss Whiplash whilst repeatedly reminded of your favourite grandmother.

I am not suggesting we become precious about body odours. We all have bodies. Bodies smell. Sometimes pleasantly, sometimes less so.

That said, a packet of wet wipes in the handbag has probably saved more scenes than most people realise.

Forbidden Fruit

Have you ever wanted something so badly that it became impossible to think about anything else?

You might be sitting on a train, walking through a supermarket, attending a meeting, or trying to enjoy a perfectly ordinary afternoon. Yet your thoughts keep looping back to the same thing, the same desire, the same frustration, and the same denial.

The more unavailable it becomes, the more obsessed you are. A month ago, it barely crossed your mind. Now it’s all you can think about.

Your body feels restless, and your mind keeps returning to the forbidden thing. You find yourself negotiating, inventing loopholes, seeking distractions, and counting days.

And all because someone told you to wait.

Instant Gratification

We live in an age of instant gratification.

Food arrives at our doors within minutes. Films stream on demand. Entire wardrobes can appear on our doorstep the day after we order them. We rarely have to wait for anything anymore.

Yet things weren’t always this frantic. For those of us who remember the pre-digital era, ordering used to mean an exercise in patience itself.

Every household seemed to have at least three of them: the ubiquitous family catalogue. These glossy, well-thumbed volumes permanently occupied the coffee table, serving as a physical version of Amazon long before next-day delivery became the norm.

You would spend hours flicking through the pages, imagining the outfit, the shoes, or whatever treasure had caught your eye. Models awkwardly pointed towards the horizon or smiled approvingly at their wristwatches, as though this somehow helped sell knitwear.

Then came the wait.

Six to eight weeks of anticipation. Six to eight weeks of wondering.

By the time your purchase finally arrived, the fantasy had often become bigger than the item itself. You’d gone up or down a dress size, changed your mind twice, and heaven forbid you wanted to return it. The refund process alone could take as long as a Victorian sea voyage.

Yet, in many ways, that’s what we’ve lost: the waiting, the anticipation. The delicious tension of wanting something but not yet being able to have it. Because perhaps the most pleasurable part isn’t always possession, it’s the desire.

The house you’ve saved years to buy, the dress you’ve been hunting for months, or the final piece missing from a collection.

When these things finally arrive, the excitement can fade surprisingly quickly. Yet the anticipation beforehand can occupy our minds for weeks.

We often tell ourselves that we want the thing itself. In reality, we are frequently addicted to wanting and the moment of acquisition.

There is something uniquely intoxicating about the unavailable, the forbidden, or the delayed.

Consumerism On Steroids

You can see this everywhere. Take the modern obsession with blind boxes and limited-edition collectables. People queue for hours. They buy multiple copies of the same product hoping to find a rare variant. Entire YouTube channels are devoted to unboxing videos.

At first glance, it looks irrational. Why not simply sell the rare item directly? Because the wait and uncertainty are part of the appeal. The possibility that you might obtain something others cannot.

The human brain places extraordinary value on scarcity. What is difficult to obtain often feels more precious than what is freely available. Desire often grows strongest when satisfaction remains just out of reach.

Orgasm Denial

This is one reason orgasm denial can be so powerful. Unlike many kinks, the premise is simple. Take something that is normally available, then remove it.

Nothing magical has happened. Nothing physical has changed. Nothing needs to be purchased, assembled, or plugged in. Yet suddenly the denied person becomes acutely aware of something they may previously have taken for granted.

The mind starts looping, and keeping score as the body starts noticing and desire begins to grow. What was once ordinary now feels extraordinary simply because it is no longer available.

Nothing proved this psychological truth to me quite like a (highly sophisticated) lockdown game of ‘Would You Rather?’, when someone asked:

“Would you rather never have sex again, or never be able to orgasm again?”

It sounds ridiculous. Yet beneath the joke sits an interesting question.

Many of us rarely think about orgasm because it is simply there, available, accessible and ordinary. Something we can enjoy alone, with a partner, several partners, or even Kermit the Frog if your life choices have taken a particularly unexpected turn.

The value was always there; the denial merely revealed it. Yet while this explains why orgasm denial can feel so intense, it still doesn’t explain why it affects me so deeply as a submissive.

When we hear the term ‘remote control’, we tend to focus entirely on the physical mechanics: insertable, discreet toys and radio-activated, under-the-table vibrations. While those are undoubtedly fun, the thrill wears off fast. Eventually, the hardware becomes impractical, uncomfortable, or just predictable.

If you want to get inside a submissive’s head and profoundly rewire a power exchange, you have to look past the toys. This psychological landscape is heavily underutilised and deeply misunderstood, yet it remains one of the most powerful vehicles for dominance available.

You just have to understand the mechanisms first.

This brings us to the real mechanisms of power dynamics, and where most people get tripped up: the subversion of typical male-female mating strategies.

In a modern, fluid world, human dynamics are beautifully complex. However, if we look at traditional, heterosexual frameworks, women are often heavily conditioned to understand their own sexual leverage. We can know exactly how to navigate the power we hold over men who want to have sex with us. It is an easy, short-term tool for gratification and control.

But what happens when a Dominant completely takes that off the table?

When a man removes sex as an immediate reward or bargaining chip (even if he secretly wants it), it can catch a woman completely off guard. The playing field is instantly rewired.

• Zero Leverage: Your usual toolkit of hints, smiles, and sexual allure suddenly holds zero currency.

• Broken Patterns: The game you know inside-out no longer works.

• Forced Curiosity: When sexual charm won’t change his focus, a whole new psychological landscape opens up.

Suddenly, she can become intensely interested. Her default strategies have failed, and she is forced to completely rethink how she relates to him. He isn’t investing in short-term physical gratification; he is investing in her mind for the long term.

By refusing the easy bait, he proves he will not be manipulated. He is demonstrating absolute power and self-control over his own desires. And for a submissive woman? That boundary can be intoxicating.

The Ultimate Power Play

Physical bondage is easy. Anyone can tie a knot or buy a toy. But mental bondage? That is enduring, deeply rewarding, and nearly impossible to break.

Right on cue, you get the matching submissives who think they are Anastasia Steele, but are actually just trend-addicts who must dive headfirst into whatever specific aesthetic is currently clogging their feed.

These are also the kind of people who think you should get turned on just by looking at photos of their equipment. They populate their profiles with headless men in corporate suits, or women whose entire digital presence is an aggressive mix of stolen Pinterest quotes about surrender, cluttered cat memes, and six actual cats roaming the background.

The Saving Grace

I remember agonising for years over whether I was a submissive or a slave, as though the distinction held some profound answer to my identity. Looking back, it only really mattered in relation to the person involved.

One Dominant might awaken a sexual submissive, while another might inspire a far deeper instinct toward devotion and service. Trying to define that in isolation now feels premature, perhaps even impossible.

At the time, however, the distinction felt enormous.

Many lifestyle slave profiles carried declarations like:

“I will do anything, or I have no limits.”

Claims that could usually be dismantled with a single practical question.

It all drifted slightly too close to adolescent Gorean fantasy: coin-slaves, branding, and “Fair Use Subs”.

Things that would probably not survive five minutes in a Tesco Express.

Yet whatever glorious title people assign themselves beyond the basics, I suspect much of it reflects an internal state rather than a literal way of living.

Among the current options are such masterpieces as Wrathsponge, Plecostomus, Big Spoon, Little Spoon, Squirrel, and Power Bottom.

And my personal favourite:

“Not Applicable.”

It has the same energy as answering a televised phone poll only to select:

I don’t know.

Still, behind the comedy, many of these identities reveal something real about desire, intimacy, power, and the increasingly fragmented ways people now construct the self.

So let’s begin…

1.

The Paypig

The poor old Paypig is often mocked, or quietly expected, to varying degrees within the world of professional Dommes. These dynamics revolve around power exchange through financial surrender. Gratification, sexual or otherwise, comes from the pleasure of giving money, gifts, or financial control to a Dominant.

At one extreme sits extraction roleplay, where consensual financial blackmail forms part of the dynamic. At the other are the countless Findoms signed up to chain restaurant apps here in the UK, where all that is required is a location, a table number, and a willing sender somewhere in the world.

Voilà: a surprise dinner. Or, occasionally, a 95p half-pint.

One Domme was reportedly less than impressed by that particular act of generosity.

And honestly, a small piece of advice for male submissives reading this: choose the boring household items.

Everyone goes for the lingerie, perfume, or chocolates. But several Dommes have told me the things they remember most are the practical gifts, the items they genuinely needed. It signals attentiveness rather than performance.

Although for submissives, there is rarely a wish list in return.

The Brat

Some Doms actively enjoy it. It gives them something to work with, resistance they can shape, tease, or correct. For others, any challenge to authority feels incompatible from the start. There is no single preference. Some want silence and obedience, others enjoy conversation, provocation, even defiance.

If a submissive is still internally at odds with her submission (something I experienced for a long time), it can present as bratty behaviour, but it is often coming from resistance, shame, or uncertainty rather than personality. In that case, it is not play, its friction.

Some Dominants do not want to be constantly met with force. Occasional resistance can be playful, erotic, but if brattiness becomes the baseline, the question becomes:

Who is actually holding the dynamic?

At that point, it is less about power exchange and more about performance, roles being acted out rather than lived. And then the question becomes:

Where does defence end and genuine surrender begin?

Nevertheless, brats are popular. There is certainly no shortage of Brat Tamers online.

But being fiery, playful, or strong-willed does not require brattiness as a permanent state. It is something you can step into or out of, depending on context.

Defiance is probably not the strongest foundation for surrender.

Daddy Dom & baby girl

This is probably one of the more recognisable dynamics within D/s culture, appearing in countless forms and intensities.

Strip away the titles for a moment, replace Daddy with Sir, and baby girl with submissive, and much of what remains is simply D/s expressed through a softer, more nurturing, and emotionally tactile lens.

In practice, “Daddy” functions more as an emotional archetype than a familial reference. The psychology behind it often revolves around protection, guidance, praise, steadiness, and safe authority.

And if we are being honest, most people carry some form of unresolved emotional architecture from childhood. Very few sail through formative years untouched by it.

This does not mean everyone is consciously recreating parental or filial dynamics. Rather, these roles can sometimes become spaces where vulnerability, trust, and reassurance are explored safely through consensual intimacy.

I certainly understood that more in retrospect than I did at the time.

DDLG, as it is commonly abbreviated, also should not automatically be confused with adult baby dynamics, which exist as their own separate space entirely.

“Baby girl” itself can encompass a surprisingly broad range of expressions: playful submissives, princess archetypes, bratty energy, littles, middles, praise-seeking personalities, or simply someone who enjoys softness and nurturing woven into their submission.

For some, that may involve colouring books, bedtime rituals, hair brushing, chosen outfits, reward systems, or affectionate guidance.

For others, it may barely extend beyond tone, language, and emotional dynamic.

In many ways, it is simply power exchange with a softer centre.

And for some people, of course, none of this resonates whatsoever.

Other submissives may find the language uncomfortable or entirely incompatible with their own dynamic, and that is perfectly fine. D/s is highly personal, and not every framework will appeal to every person.

A mature submissive and a “baby girl” of the same age may experience the very same scene through entirely different emotional lenses.

One may respond primarily to authority and surrender.

The other to reassurance, praise, nurturing, emotional safety, or affectionate dependency woven into the power exchange.

Ultimately, these dynamics tend to reveal a lot less about immaturity and far more about how differently human beings experience comfort, authority, intimacy, and care.

The Architecture of Lego

Surrounded by a chaotic sea of Fuzzy Felts, Stickle Bricks, and LEGO pieces, my childhood was built on a series of small, brightly coloured possibilities.

To the uninitiated, these plastic blocks were merely toys, but to me, they were a lesson in autonomy, and also a hazard. Stray LEGO bricks, when trodden on, were far more lethal than most kitchen utensils.

Yet, it was in the middle of this scattered empire that my best friend, aged five, made her first grand announcement: She wanted to grow up to be a lawyer.

Twenty years later, she qualified as a corporate lawyer working for a global confectionery firm.

My own path, however, was never destined to be that tidy, that defined, or that conventional…

Had I known I would grow up to be a “submissive”, I might have given more thought to my LEGO creations, which always seemed to consist of a green baseplate, carefully laid foundations, ambitious rendering and multicoloured brickwork, only to realise there were never enough lattice windows to complete the masterpiece.

Even back then, I had to be the architect. Painting by numbers and pre-designed kits felt almost insulting. They curtailed my creative freedoms.

If, after the rush back from break, all the toys were taken and you were stuck with Fuzzy Felts, the only thing you could do, even at five, was to construct deeply inappropriate scenes that looked nothing like the examples on the box.

I always chose my own creative path.

It was a gamble, but clearly a risk I was prepared to take, even back then.

Masks of Convention

Convention insists we follow a predetermined trajectory, the inheritance of marriage, security, and career.

We adopt these markers to thrive, or perhaps simply to survive.

Yet, I always saw convention as a barrier. I didn’t like it dictating my LEGO masterpieces as a child, and I certainly didn’t like it curtailing my choices as an adult. To me, convention was a mask people hid behind, or worse, a mechanism for judgment.

Even the initial greeting “What do you do?” sounded less like curiosity and more like a calculated assessment of worth.

What interested me was always something else entirely. What people loved to do, and what existed beneath the surface.

Convention could so easily interrupt genuine connection, and I was always searching for the levellers, those rare moments where pretence gave way to something more real.

Connection, communication, warmth and truth fascinated me, perhaps because I had experienced so little of them at home.

I questioned the standards, distrusted the narrative, and was unafraid to veer from the path.

And that turned out to be exactly what I did.

Looking back, it started early, in childhood.

An Unwanted Inheritance

I was formed by a particular kind of male silence. My biological father was absent, and my stepfather was a void. To him, I was not a daughter, but a much-unwanted inheritance. I was a child tacked onto a family unit by default, rather than choice.

My mother, however, was not a void. She was a malignant presence. To her, I was an inconvenience, a reminder of failure, and a target for a particular kind of domestic cruelty.

It was within these parameters that a kind of hyper-independence formed. I became an explorer of the mind, endlessly curious about the stranger, more unconventional corners of life and searching for something real behind the endless masks.

Convention rarely interested me, but crossing its boundaries did.

Before the adult desire for submission surfaced, before the childhood games of being chased, captured, and tied, there was already a foundation: An open, exploratory mind and a determination to walk my own path, because the one I was born into felt too volatile to remain on.

I wasn’t looking to be re-parented or saved. I was looking for what I had never been given.

I was looking for a lead capable of offering the truth and trust I had spent a lifetime learning to manufacture for myself.

When Walls Become Doors

Perhaps this is where one expects submission to be the natural consequence of trauma.

It was, in fact, the opposite.

In childhood, I built structures to keep danger out. In a D/s dynamic, I build them to let intimacy in.

It is the same ‘architect’ brain, but the motivation had switched from survival to connection.

Whenever I encountered a mature Lead, it wasn’t the control that hooked me as much as the integrity. For the first time, I didn’t have to manufacture the truth. Someone else was providing it. It was the leveller I had been searching for, a vehicle for trust that blew convention and judgment out of the window.

I am not suggesting that all Dominants possess this integrity. Many do not. You must be discerning and extremely careful with whom you trust with your submission.

But when it works, when you find a leader with the investment to see, understand, and own everything about you, there is simply nothing like it.

But that understanding would only begin to take shape later.

Growing Pains

Secondary school revolved around hair-sprayed mullets, neon prints, and the pop-culture simplicity of Kylie and Jason. My hair complied with the trends, but my internal world was elsewhere.

While my classmates were focused on pop stars, I was drawn to the natural power dynamics of my teachers, to any space where authority was clear and earned.

It wasn’t until a few years later, through a chance meeting with a close male friend, that my trajectory changed. Retrospectively, I should have been more composed when I unearthed a “pre-mobile” porn printout in the footwell of his car.

Like any good, empathetic, and kind-hearted friend, I did not respond with grace. I laughed so hard until the situation became a medical emergency, one involving a very real threat of total, uncontrollable incontinence.

Thankfully, he saw the humour in it, and, in return, confessed to his secret visits to professional Dominatrices.

Then he said the words that changed my life.

Flying the Freak Flag

Suddenly, every strange thing clicked. I wasn’t alone.

I had thought I was doomed to a very strange internal life, but finding others changed everything. It was the first time I realised that my need for a lead wasn’t about being lesser, it was about finding a partner who had the same, but complementary drive.

The White Rabbit

Over the years, I moved from being too shy to open the door to a kink market to interviewing the person who ran it.

I followed the white rabbit into a world of submission, intentionally trading the traditional security of marriage and children for a path that was entirely my own.

It was a choice, but it came with its own set of sacrifices.

I have changed since those early days. The deferential anxiety and the magic of it all have evolved. I’m not jaded, but my desires have altered considerably.

Nothing is quite like investing deeply in one person.

I’ve never been promiscuous, and I’ve always kept my private life private, even while immersed in the social fringes of the London scene.

I watched triads, pro-services, and creative projects unfold. It was never a hotbed of constant kinky sex. In fact, the architecture of the clubs was often more controlled and group-oriented than any vanilla arena.

I realised that just because you are a submissive does not make you a target for every Dominant. Connection is a choice, not an obligation.

I have been privileged to witness a vast spectrum of relationships, dynamics, and lifestyles. Because I chose a path without the traditional constraints of family, I had the freedom to invest time in the shadows where others could not.

If my decades in the London alternative scene taught me anything, it was the necessity of internal work…

Behind the Narrative

The next logical question might be: Why write this now?

On one level, I feel compelled.

We are surrounded by erotica presented as truth, fantasies like Fifty Shades, where reality is bent for consumption. ‘How-to’ guides without understanding or heart, red-and-black clichés, and Madam Whiplash stereotypes that continue to frame D/s, kink, and BDSM as either damaged or deviant.

I write because I want other women to find and embrace their submission (or their dominance) and recognise the power within it.

I was once ashamed, convinced my desire to submit was a contradiction of my independence. I was wrong. I was always the same strong, independent woman. I simply had not integrated all of myself yet.

I also write for men who are trying to understand their own desire to lead, or to be led. In a culture that has often pathologised masculinity, it is no surprise that so many are turning toward the Manosphere. Many are simply looking for clarity, structure, and strength without the misogyny that often accompanies those spaces.

I am not offering a universal model. Be who you are. But if I can offer anything, with a lifetime of lived submissive experience, then perhaps The Odalisque Letters is a journey worth taking.

The Clandestine Community

Beyond my own story, I write for those who cannot live this life openly or fully.

If D/s runs through you, you already know how rarely it is understood. It can be a lonely place to exist, caught between an internal truth and a world that sees only the sinful or the strange.

In this maze, if the mirror cracks and you have no interest in the stone beneath it, you have already reached your dead end.

The glass cannot hold the weight of a real person forever. Eventually, the silvering peels back to reveal the truth.

Many spend a lifetime running from their true reflection, hiding it, or borrowing from another. Narcissism is simply the most extreme form of this avoidance, the inability to sit with one’s own truth.

Yet, there is nothing more intoxicating than an individual, leader or led, who truly owns themselves.

The tragedy of the Mirror Trap is that it acts as a false wall. Many turn back when the glass cracks, fearing the reality beneath, but for those brave enough to stay, the magic is only just beginning.

In a true dynamic, the end of projection is the birth of intimacy.

Voyeur follows legendary journalist Gay Talese as he uncovers the secret life of Foos and his ‘laboratory,’ the Manor House Motel.

It is a bizarre, often uncomfortable study of a man who spent decades in a carpeted attic, peering through custom vents at the intimate lives of his guests. But as Talese digs deeper, the narrative switches from taboo research to a haunting confession.

Sorting through the lies, discrepancies, and distortions, we discover a man burdened by guilt and a dark secret that doesn’t quite fit the hotel he built for it, a secret that now threatens to collapse his entire legacy.

Voyeur in a Nutshell

For nearly half a century, Gerald Foos lived a double life. Convinced he was a social researcher rather than a peeping tom, he modified his motel to facilitate a lifetime of voyeurism.

In the twilight of his life, fearing his findings would be lost to history, he reached out to Gay Talese to immortalise his work.

What follows is a messy battle of egos: Talese, the prideful journalist who ‘sold his soul’ for his career, and Foos, the subject who desperately insists, “I’m the man, not Gay!”

This obsession with legacy is visible in every frame; both men have so many self-portraits in their homes, they are one step away from a boudoir shot over the mantelpiece.

From Witness to Participant

Foos’s research escalated from silent watching to active intervention.

• Foos repeatedly insists he saw the victim’s chest move ‘up and down.’ In Statement Analysis, this level of certainty implies physical proximity. It must be nearly impossible to distinguish a shallow, resting breath or ‘check observations’ from a small ceiling vent ten feet above a dim, smoky motel room. This doesn’t sound like the perspective of a man in an attic; rather, it’s the language of someone standing directly over a body.

Falling Through the Cracks

• Foos used this specific phrase to describe the victim. While it’s a generic term for someone slipping through the legal system, in his case, it feels like ‘leakage.’ Foos wasn’t just using a metaphor; he was likely looking through literal cracks: the slats of a wardrobe door, a room grille, or the vents of his hiding spot. He literally watched her life end as she fell through cracks of light, which makes the phrase feel less like an idiom and more like an embedded confession.

The KFC Contradiction

• Foos was a completionist, a collector. He was a man who wouldn’t miss a guest wiping chicken grease on a bedspread and spent decades meticulously detailing the tedium of human life. The idea that he would ‘close observations’ during the climax of a murder and not bother to check the vent in the morning defies his very nature. A voyeur doesn’t look away from the ultimate act, perhaps they only look away when the observation becomes a legal liability.

The 8-Mile Elephant, The Bean Hotel

The most damning discrepancy is the ‘single source story’ problem. According to the documentary, there is no official record of a murder at the Manor House Motel during that period.

However, there is a record of Irene Cruz, a 28-year-old woman strangled in her room, found by a maid in the morning at the Bean Hotel just eight miles away, and only eight days before Foos’s report at his own hotel.

Statistically, the chances of two near-identical murders happening in such a tight window of time and space must be virtually zero. This is why many suggest Foos simply conflated the Irene Cruz case and made it his own.

Yet, a complete fabrication serves the ‘Voyeur’ no purpose.

Foos was a regular in those spaces, frequently entering rooms to collect ‘data’, like bra sizes, or to flush drug stashes. Because he had already desensitised himself to the risk of physical intrusion, we can’t truly know his proximity to the victim.

Whether he was tuned into the acoustic leaks from the attic, or standing in the shadows of the room itself, he had a level of access that was as total as it was terrifying. He may have been much closer to the tragedy than the safety of the attic allowed him to admit.

Through the Cracks

I believe Gerald Foos did witness a murder, but he built a web of inconsistencies around it to avoid accountability. Whether he saw it at his own hotel or elsewhere, his language suggests a truth he couldn’t shake.

Foos may have lied, omitted, or deceived, but I doubt he fabricated the event itself. Why go to the extreme personal and financial risk of building the ultimate observation laboratory only to invent the findings? A pure fantasist wouldn’t have bothered with the shag carpets and the padded walkways. To suggest it was all a lie undermines the very obsession that defined his life.

Possible Scenarios

If we accept that a murder occurred, we have to reconcile the lack of records at the Manor House with the nearly identical case of Irene Cruz just eight miles away. While we may never have a definitive file to close this case, the psychological patterns suggest a few possibilities:

The Two Hotels Theory

• Perhaps the drug-flushing and initial assault actually began at the Manor House. After being accused of theft and badly beaten, the woman may have managed to flee, seeking sanctuary eight miles away at the Bean Hotel. Driven by his obsession, Foos followed. This explains the huge gap in his ‘observations’ that night; maybe he wasn’t in his attic: he was in, or near, a foreign building where she was eventually murdered by her partner. It also explains why Foos only seemed to show emotion at the memory of the Coroner’s Van. At a distance, that truck was his only visual confirmation that the woman who fled his motel was truly gone.

Mobile Research

• Foos admitted to voyeuristic excursions beyond his own walls. The Bean Hotel was a short drive away and a known hub for the downtown trade he was fascinated by. Perhaps he followed a couple there, or was simply on one of his frequent excursions at a site he didn’t own. Whether he was nearly caught in the room and forced to hide behind a wardrobe, or was watching from a different vantage point in the building, perhaps his proximity was far closer than the safety of the Manor House attic. Without his owner-alibi, he remained a silent, terrified shadow at the Bean, watching a tragedy he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, stop.

The Manor House Reality

• We must consider that the murder did happen at the Manor, but in a pre-digital era, the records were lost or never filed because the victim was a runaway. However, Foos’s claim that police returned to tell him the suspect used a fake name feels like a narrative dead-end. How do you know a name is fake unless you have the real one to compare it to? A stolen car only proves the car wasn’t his, it isn’t proof of a false identity.

The Silence

Regardless of the address, Foos remained frozen in silence. Not for minutes, but for hours. Did he choose to preserve his secret over a human life when he could have intervened, even anonymously?

Crucially, Foos never returned to his vent that night or even in the morning; instead, he watched from his office and waited for the maid to make the discovery. For a man who would log a guest eating chicken for hours, this sudden lack of curiosity is telling. Perhaps he didn’t check back because he didn’t need to, did he already know she was dead?

Conversely, if he was truly an intruder in a downtown hotel room, he could never admit to standing over her in the dark. By relocating the tragedy to his Manor House attic in his journals, he created a permanent researcher’s-alibi, perhaps attempting to turn a cowardly failure into a clinical study to seek the redemption he so desperately needed.

The Truth of a Lie

I’m left with the impression that Foos would rather be known as a pervert than an accessory to murder. Whether it was conscious or unconscious, by blurring the facts surrounding it, he ensured the real woman who died stayed ‘fallen through the cracks.’

Voyeur started life as a fascinating study of taboo research, a vignette of the human condition, but it unearthed a much bigger tragedy that got lost in translation. Whether it was the murder of Irene Cruz or a woman Foos claimed to watch at his own motel, a young life was brutally taken, yet the spotlight remained on the men in the room.

In the end, perhaps we should be careful what we wish for. Foos wanted to see everything, but his ultimate punishment for a lifetime of spying was the crushing guilt of witnessing a murder he perhaps caused, but couldn’t stop, or should never have seen in the first place.

He spent forty years trying to trade his reputation for his soul, only to find that some secrets can never stay hidden behind the cracks.

Voyeur is a polarising study of a man who tried to turn his life into an experiment but ended up a victim of his own perspective. And yet, beyond the inherent voyeurism, I didn’t see a sociopath; I saw someone haunted by a moment of participation they couldn’t take back.

Perhaps the most plausible truth isn’t found in a police file, it’s in the weight of a man’s guilt. Foos confused the truth with lies because he wanted to be heard, but he was too terrified to be seen. Some secrets are too blinding to stay hidden in the shadows, and Gerald Foos may forever be the man who saw too much, but did far too little.

The Last Word, For Irene

Whether Gerald was talking about the murder at the Bean or another unknown tragedy at the Manor, the result is the same: We have lost lives that the world chose to ignore.

Irene Cruz lost hers brutally, potentially for something she didn’t even do. The police reports are empty: no details, no hair colour, no eye colour. Just a name left in the shadows until a forgotten story caught the light and found her.
