And then, if you are a great sinner, you have accumulated an enormous debt, one you are incapable of paying.

If you took out a loan from the bank to pay off over 30 years with monthly payments, little by little you would pay off the loan. But if that loan amounted to 100 times or 10,000 times that amount, then you would need 100 lifetimes to pay off that loan.

Perhaps you aren’t even aware of the size of your debt, of the amount that has been accumulating since you were a child because of your sins.

How is your relationship with your Creditor? Do you know how much you owe Him? If He presents Himself as a God capable of and willing to forgive your debt, do you draw near to Him to receive that forgiveness? When was the last time you asked God for forgiveness? Are you aware of your sin, or do you avoid confronting it?

And no, this isn’t about others, about the people around you. This is about you; it’s about examining your life and looking at and recognizing how you act toward those who owe you a tiny fraction compared to the great sum you owe—or owed—to God, if you have already received His forgiveness.

What do I mean by this?

Do you get offended easily? And does God get offended by your sins? And if God forgives you, why don’t you want to forgive your brother, but instead demand he pay you back to the very last cent, when God forgives you millions?

The judgment and eternal destiny of your life will depend on how much and how well you have forgiven your brothers, since God has the power and the will to forgive you your entire debt.

Here is where the truth of being a religious person is tested: “as I also forgive those who offend me: Lord, forgive my sins, as I also forgive those who offend me.”

The only thing that can close the door of forgiveness for your debt is if you close the door of forgiveness toward your brothers.

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-15).

On this feast of the Curé of Ars, the Church sets before us a mystery worth sitting with a while: that human brokenness, wherever it is found, is met by the relentless and restoring power of Divine Mercy. Saint John Paul II returned to this truth again and again throughout his pontificate, and it bears repeating to you today. Your priesthood was never defined by the wounds you carry. It is defined by the love of the Father who called you, precisely in your woundedness, to help heal the wounds of others.

So on this day, let the witness of John Paul II and the life of the Curé of Ars renew something in you.

You are a living icon of the Good Shepherd. In his 1986 letter for the bicentenary of John Vianney’s birth, John Paul II wrote that the saint remains a model for every priest because he was “completely configured to Christ the Good Shepherd.” Saint John Vianney himself put it simply: “The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.” When you look out at your parish, at the familiar faces and the tired pews and the people who need more from you than you sometimes feel you have, remember that Christ has chosen your hands, your voice, and your heart to make Himself real to a hurting world. That has not changed since your ordination day, and it will not change.

Your humility is your greatest strength. When John Vianney first arrived in the small, unremarkable village of Ars, he knelt down and kissed the ground before he had preached a single homily. John Paul II carried that same gesture with him for the rest of his life, kneeling to kiss the earth of every nation he visited. Do not be discouraged by your limits, or by the smallness of your own “village,” whatever that looks like for you. It was never about the size of the parish. Like these two men, your willingness to bend low is exactly what opens the door for God to work through you in ways you will not always get to see.

You hold the remedy for wounds the world calls incurable. The Lord speaks through Jeremiah of a people whose “hurt is incurable, your wound most grievous,” a bruise the world insists cannot be healed. And yet, in the very next breath, the Lord promises, “I will restore health to you, I will heal your wounds.” John Paul II reminded us that what looks terminal to the world finds its answer, immediately and fully, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Every time you sit in that confessional, you are not simply hearing an accounting of sins. You are watching, up close, as God rebuilds a human heart. You are the minister of the one cure that actually works.

You are far more than your weaknesses. When the weight of ministry presses down on you, and it will, hold onto John Paul II’s words: we are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, but the sum of the Father’s love for us. Your identity was never built on your energy, your effectiveness, or how well you are holding it together. It is built on His love, full stop. He called you knowing exactly how frail you are, so that His grace would have room to shine through the cracks rather than around them.

Remember Peter on the water. When the wind rose against him and he began to sink, Jesus did not scold him for stepping out of the boat. He reached out at once, caught him, and said only, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” That is how He meets you too, in the moments when your own faith feels like it is sinking. His hand is already extended before you even call out.

God is rebuilding His people through your hands. The Psalmist declares, “The Lord has built up Zion again; he has appeared in his glory,” and promises that He “regarded the prayer of the destitute, and did not spurn their prayer.” John Paul II taught that this rebuilding begins first within the human soul, one heart at a time. Every Mass you offer, every blessing you give, every hour you spend with the poor and the forgotten, is a small act of that rebuilding. You are releasing people from chains they have carried for years. You are putting a song back in places that had gone quiet.

Fathers, do not lose heart. The early mornings no one sees. The confessional hours that stretch longer than anyone knows. The quiet, unglamorous prayers you offer before anyone else is awake. None of it is wasted, and none of it goes unseen by the One who matters most. He has looked down from His holy height, as the Psalm says, and He has chosen you, of all people, to bring His people home.

Imagina a un intelectual del siglo II, genuinamente brillante y profundamente inquieto, que se abre camino a través de cada tradición filosófica que su mundo tenía para ofrecer. Estoicismo. Pitagorismo. Platonismo. No se limitaba a tantear el terreno; hacía lo que se supone que uno debe hacer: interrogar cada sistema, poner a prueba cada afirmación, rechazar las respuestas fáciles. Y una y otra vez se topaba con el mismo muro. Nada de aquello se sostenía.

Entonces, mientras caminaba por la orilla del mar, se encontró con un anciano que lo redirigió, no hacia una nueva filosofía, sino hacia los antiguos profetas hebreos y, a través de ellos, hacia Jesucristo. La parábola es un estudio de caso sobre el autoengaño catastrófico.

La viña de la parábola no fue entregada a los arrendatarios como una propiedad en ruinas que requiriera reparaciones. Venía equipada con un seto, un lagar y una torre de vigilancia; contaba con todos los recursos y estaba deliberadamente preparada para el éxito. La generosidad del dueño estaba integrada en su propia estructura. Su paciencia —mientras los siervos son golpeados y asesinados una y otra vez— raya en algo casi inquietante. No es cruel; es extraordinariamente —casi ingenuamente— comprometido.

Cuando los arrendatarios ven llegar al hijo, su lógica resulta escalofriantemente familiar: si eliminamos al legítimo heredero, la propiedad pasará a ser nuestra. Es la lógica de toda ideología que intenta apropiarse de los bienes de la civilización mientras desmantela los cimientos sobre los que dichos bienes fueron edificados. No se puede tener la viña sin el dueño. No se puede construir sentido mientras se rechaza la fuente de ese sentido.

Jesús cita el Salmo 118 —un texto que su audiencia conocía bien— para señalar que esta historia no termina con la victoria de los arrendatarios. La piedra rechazada no desaparece. Se convierte en aquello con lo que todo lo demás debe medirse.

LO QUE REALMENTE ENSEÑA LA PARÁBOLA

Tres cosas que nos muestra la viña

1. Ya te encuentras en una viña equipada; la pregunta es qué estás haciendo con ella

Pedro inicia la primera lectura afirmando que el poder de Dios nos ha concedido «todo lo que contribuye a la vida y a la piedad» (2 Pe 1:3). No se trata de la retórica de un cartel motivacional, sino de una afirmación ontológica. La viña no está vacía. Tu capacidad de razonar, de asombrarte, de establecer relaciones, de discernimiento moral: estas son la cerca, el lagar y la torre.

El Salmo 91 añade: no deambulas desprotegido; tú «moras bajo la sombra del Omnipotente». La inquietud de no haber recibido lo suficiente para construir algo significativo es, teológicamente, una premisa falsa.

2. La honestidad intelectual consiste en seguir el argumento, no en manipular las conclusiones

Los arrendatarios no rechazaron a los siervos por ignorancia; sabían exactamente lo que hacían. El rechazo deliberado pertenece a una categoría distinta a la de la duda honesta. La «escalera» de Pedro en 2 Pe 1:5-7 —fe, virtud, conocimiento, dominio propio, perseverancia, piedad, afecto fraterno y amor— constituye, en esencia, el mapa de una mente y una voluntad que persiguen la verdad allí donde esta las conduzca, sin desertar cuando el precio a pagar resulta elevado.

Justino Mártir es la prueba histórica de este concepto. No dejó de pensar al convertirse en cristiano; por el contrario, pensó con mayor intensidad y audacia, pues había hallado aquello que verdaderamente merecía ser objeto de reflexión.

3. Toda arquitectura requiere una piedra de carga, y esta ya ha sido puesta a prueba

El versículo del Aleluya identifica a Jesús como «el testigo fiel, el primogénito de entre los muertos»: alguien que atravesó lo peor que el mundo podía infligirle y emergió victorioso al otro lado (Ap 1:5). Justino denominó a Cristo el *Logos*: el principio racional eterno que se manifiesta —por tenue que sea su destello— en toda tradición filosófica que haya rozado la verdad.

Su argumento no postulaba que el cristianismo prescindiera de la razón, sino que la razón —cuando se sigue con honestidad— conduce inexorablemente hasta este punto. La piedra angular no fue colocada por los constructores, sino por el Dueño. Eso es lo que la convierte en un soporte de carga: no depende de nuestro consenso.

TRES PREGUNTAS PARA EL CAMINO A CASA

¿Qué dones estás dejando sin utilizar?

El viñedo ya está equipado. ¿Estás trabajando activamente con lo que se te ha dado —el intelecto, las relaciones, el tiempo—, o estás tratando a la gracia como un simple ruido de fondo?

¿A qué mensajero incómodo estás ignorando?

Los arrendatarios no expulsaron a los siervos por aburrimiento. La verdad resultaba incómoda. ¿Qué argumento, qué persona, qué sutil advertencia estás desestimando porque aceptarla te supondría algún costo?

¿Qué es lo que sostiene realmente tu cimiento?

Justin evaluó todas las opciones filosóficas a su alcance y concluyó que solo una poseía solidez estructural. ¿Sobre qué estás edificando? ¿Y ha sido sometido eso realmente a prueba?

¿bajo el peso de la mortalidad, el sufrimiento y el sentido?

CONCLUSIÓN

El debate sigue abierto, y también la viña.

Justino Mártir entró en un tribunal romano con la misma calma que había llevado a cada debate filosófico, pues ya había resuelto la cuestión fundamental. El Salmo 91:15 se había vuelto una verdad personal para él: «Él me invocará, y yo le responderé; estaré con él en la angustia». La espada no lo refutó; lo confirmó.

La parábola concluye con la entrega de la viña a otros. Nosotros somos esos «otros». Los labradores que se apoderaron de la herencia la perdieron de todos modos; quienes reciben al Hijo lo heredan todo. La piedra angular ya está colocada. La invitación no ha caducado.

El Dueño se asoma una vez más por encima del cerco de la viña. No para exigir, sino para ofrecer.

El debate sigue abierto. Y también la puerta.

Imagine a second-century intellectual genuinely brilliant, deeply restless working his way through every philosophical tradition his world had to offer. Stoicism. Pythagoreanism. Platonism. He wasn’t dabbling; he was doing the thing you’re supposed to do: interrogating every system, testing every claim, refusing easy answers. And he kept hitting the same wall. None of it held.

Then, walking along the seashore, he met an old man who redirected him not to a new philosophy, but to the ancient Hebrew prophets and, through them, to Jesus Christ. Justin didn’t abandon critical thinking. He put his philosopher’s cloak back on and said: this is the only truly safe and profitable philosophy. He eventually died defending that claim in Rome, around AD 165. He is called Justin Martyr.

Today’s Gospel raises the same question Justin spent his life answering: what do you do when the Owner of everything keeps sending you something — and you keep turning it away?

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.”

The parable is a case study in catastrophic self-deception

The vineyard in the parable wasn’t handed to the tenants as a fixer-upper. It came with a hedge, a winepress, a watchtower, fully resourced, deliberately set up for success. The owner’s generosity was structurally built in. His patience, as the servants keep getting beaten and killed, edges into something almost unsettling. He is not cruel; he is extraordinarily, almost naively committed.

When the tenants see the son coming, their logic is chillingly familiar: if we remove the rightful heir, the property becomes ours. It is the logic of every ideology that tries to claim the goods of civilization while dismantling the foundation those goods were built on. You can’t have the vineyard without the owner. You can’t build meaning while rejecting the source of meaning.

Jesus quotes Psalm 118, a text his audience knew, to signal that this story doesn’t end with the tenants winning. The rejected stone doesn’t disappear. It becomes the thing everything else has to be measured against.

WHAT THE PARABLE ACTUALLY TEACHES

Three things the vineyard shows us

1. You are already in a furnished vineyard, the question is what you’re doing with it

Peter opens the first reading by saying that God’s power has given us “everything that makes for life and devotion” (2 Pet 1:3). That’s not motivational poster language — it’s an ontological claim. The vineyard is not empty. Your capacity for reason, for wonder, for relationship, for moral perception — these are the hedge and the winepress and the tower.

Psalm 91 adds: you are not wandering unprotected; you “abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” The anxiety that you haven’t been given enough to build something meaningful is, theologically, a false premise.

2. Intellectual honesty means following the argument, not managing your conclusions

The tenants didn’t reject the servants out of ignorance. They knew exactly what they were doing. Willful rejection is a different category from honest doubt. Peter’s ladder in 2 Pet 1:5–7 — faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, devotion, mutual affection, love — is essentially a map of a mind and will that keeps following truth wherever it leads, without bailing when it becomes costly.

Justin Martyr is the historical proof of concept. He didn’t stop thinking when he became a Christian. He thought harder, and more fearlessly, because he’d found the thing worth thinking about.

3. Every architecture needs a load-bearing stone, and this one has already been tested

The Alleluia verse names Jesus as “the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead”, someone who went through the worst the world could do and came out the other side (Rev 1:5). Justin called Christ the Logos: the eternal rational principle that shows up, however faintly, in every philosophical tradition that ever touched truth.

His argument wasn’t that Christianity bypasses reason. It was that reason, followed honestly, arrives here. The cornerstone wasn’t placed by the builders; it was placed by the Owner. That’s what makes it load-bearing, it doesn’t depend on our consensus.

THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE WALK HOME

What gifts are you leaving unused?

The vineyard is already furnished. Are you actively working with what you’ve been given — the intellect, the relationships, the time — or treating grace like ambient background noise?

What inconvenient messenger are you ignoring?

The tenants didn’t drive away the servants because they were bored. The truth was inconvenient. What argument, what person, what quiet nudge are you dismissing because receiving it would cost you something?

What is your actual foundation carrying?

Justin assessed every philosophical option available to him and concluded that only one was structurally sound. What are you building on — and has it actually been tested under the weight of mortality, suffering, and meaning?

CONCLUSION

The argument is still open, and so is the vineyard

Justin Martyr walked into a Roman tribunal with the same calm he’d carried into every philosophical debate, because he had already settled the foundational question. Psalm 91:15 had become personally true for him: “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress.” The sword didn’t refute him. It confirmed him.

The parable ends with the vineyard being given to others. We are those others. The tenants who seized the inheritance lost it anyway; those who receive the Son inherit everything. The cornerstone is in place. The invitation hasn’t expired.

The Owner is reaching across the vineyard fence one more time. Not demanding. Offering.

The argument is still open. And so is the door.

In the archives of the mid-fourth century, there is a specific, jagged discomfort in the record of the resurrection—specifically regarding the woman who stood in the garden while the world was still grey.

She is introduced not by her lineage, but by her history of fracturing. Seven demons.

In our modern lexicon, we might call this a total shattering of the self. To have been a vessel for seven distinct darknesses, and then to be hollowed out, cleaned, and filled with a light so blinding it feels like a second trauma. She is the ultimate witness: one who has known the abyss intimately and survived it.

The tragedy of the “Eleven” is not their grief, but their intellectual rigidity. They sat at the table, clutching their mourning like a familiar textbook, refusing to believe the woman who had returned from the impossible.

She came to them with the dew of the morning on her hem and the memory of the void in her eyes. And they, the self-appointed keepers of the movement, dismissed her. They preferred the safety of a dead teacher to the terrifying implications of a living one.

There is a profound, gothic irony here: the one who had been possessed by seven spirits was the only one sane enough to recognize the Truth when it walked through the morning mist. The rest were possessed by something far more difficult to exorcise: a stubborn, scholarly disbelief.

We are all, in a sense, sitting at that table, clinging to our skepticism because the alternative requires us to step out of the library and into a world where the graves are habitually restless.

La tentación se presenta siempre en tres formas: por la sugestión, por el deleite y por el consentimiento. Sugestión, deleite y consentimiento. (Vea Mateo 4, 1–11).

El tema central de las lecturas de este día es la confianza total y plena en Dios, nuestro Padre Creador.

En la primera lectura del libro del Génesis (2:7-9; 3:1-7), Adán, el primer hombre, es sometido a las mismas tentaciones a las que Jesús, el Hombre Nuevo, también será sometido.
La diferencia es decisiva: Adán consintió.
Lo hizo voluntariamente.
Pecó.
Y hubo consecuencias.

Adán pecó, en primer lugar, por la glotonería: el fruto se veía delicioso.
Consintió por la vanagloria: quiso ser como Dios.
Y consintió también por la avaricia: quiso poseer el estatus de Dios y decidir por sí mismo lo que es bueno y lo que es malo.

En el caso de Jesús, se presentan las mismas tentaciones, pero Él no consiente.
Jesús no puede consentir con el pecado, porque el pecado no puede existir en Él.

El diablo le hace las mismas sugerencias:
le ofrece vanagloria,
le ofrece avaricia,
y le ofrece también el gusto del paladar, la glotonería:
“Estas piedras las puedes convertir en pan”.

Pero Jesús no consiente, es decir, no accede.

Es importante notar que Jesús sufre las tentaciones como verdadero hombre.

Adán, el primer hombre, fue derrotado por el enemigo antiguo, por la serpiente.
Ese mismo enemigo se presenta ahora ante Jesús durante sus cuarenta días de ayuno.

Y Jesús no lo castiga.
No lo aniquila.
Siendo Dios, podría haberlo hecho.

Por el contrario, responde con los preceptos de la Sagrada Escritura, y con ello nos deja un ejemplo claro, un ejemplo a seguir.

Cuando, por los caminos de la vida, personas maliciosas nos hacen daño, nos ofenden, nos ponen trampas o nos difaman, también nosotros sentimos la tentación de tomar venganza o de responder con el mal.
Jesús no hizo eso.

Como nos recuerda san Pablo:
«El cual, siendo de condición divina, no consideró como presa codiciable
el ser igual a Dios; sino que se despojó de sí mismo, tomando condición de siervo, haciéndose semejante a los hombres…» (Flp 2,6–7)

Más adelante sabemos que Él va a sufrir la Pasión.
Todos podemos imaginar, incluso ayudados por las película, su sufrimiento y su muerte.

Y todo eso es para nosotros.

El ejemplo de Jesús es para nosotros.
Su Palabra tiene poder.
El Evangelio tiene poder.

En esta Cuaresma, ustedes y yo estamos llamados a crecer, como lo pedimos al inicio en la oración colecta:
“Señor, haz que en nosotros crezca el entendimiento de los misterios de Cristo.”

Es decir, que de todos los tesoros contenidos en Cristo, en esta Cuaresma aumente nuestro entendimiento y que, comprendiendo esas riquezas, sepamos traducirlas en obras concretas de santidad.

Hermanos, estos cuarenta días son un tiempo privilegiado para nosotros, para crecer como discípulos siguiendo el ejemplo de Cristo.

Cuarenta días hermosos dedicados a esto:
a contemplar a Jesús en su Palabra,
en las Sagradas Escrituras,
en los sacramentos,
y así crecer en santidad.

El llamado para nosotros es el ayuno.

Pero el ayuno no es solo una práctica ascética, no es únicamente un medio para perfeccionarnos personalmente.
Es una práctica que, de acuerdo con los mandamientos de Dios, nos saca de nosotros mismos para ir al encuentro de quienes más lo necesitan.

El ayuno, por sí solo, se queda a medio camino.

Así lo dice el Señor por medio del Profeta Isaías:

«¿No será más bien este el ayuno que yo quiero:
soltar las cadenas injustas,
desatar las correas del yugo,
liberar a los oprimidos
y quebrar todo yugo?

¿No será partir tu pan con el hambriento,
hospedar a los pobres sin techo,
vestir al que ves desnudo
y no desentenderte de tu hermano?»**
(Is 58,6–7)
Y… visitar al que está enfermo, al que está preso, acompañar al que se siente solo,
levantar el ánimo al que lo trae por los suelos. Asi lo dice Jesús: “En verdad les digo que cuanto hicieron a uno de estos hermanos míos más pequeños,
a mí me lo hicieron.» (Mt 25,40)

Hermanos, esas acciones son necesarias y deben acompañar nuestro ayuno.

Sí, es necesario que ustedes y yo sacrifiquemos nuestros deseos:
los de la carne,
los del gusto,
los del tacto,
los de la vista,
para disponernos a crecer en santidad.

Por eso, hermanos, el llamado es firme.
Viene de Dios mismo.
Los santos lo han dicho con claridad: sacrifiquémonos en esta Cuaresma.
Niéguense ciertos placeres.

Pero no se queden solo ahí.
Vayan más allá.

Den de lo que tienen a quienes no tienen.
Compartan sus dones con quienes carecen de ellos.
Compartan su alegría,
un apretón de manos,
abrigos, ropa, zapatos, comida,
cualquier recurso que alivie la necesidad del hermano.

Porque así el Señor se complace,
y así vamos preparando para nosotros
una morada eterna en el cielo.

Amén, hermanos.

Gloria al Padre, y al Hijo, y al Espíritu Santo,
como era en el principio,
ahora y siempre,
por los siglos de los siglos.

Amén.

Así comenzamos la Cuaresma este año.

En el Miércoles de Ceniza, las Escrituras no desperdician palabras.
Hablan directamente al corazón.

«Vuelvan a mí de todo corazón, con ayuno, llanto y lamento».
(Joel 2,12)

Esta es la clave: ¡Volver! Piénsalo.

Y, sin embargo, el mismo pasaje desarma inmediatamente nuestro temor:

«Desgarren su corazón y no sus vestiduras… porque Él es clemente y misericordioso, lento a la ira y rico en bondad».

La Cuaresma no trae condenación.
La Cuaresma nos trae misericordia.

San Pablo, igual de directo, nos recuerda:

«En nombre de Cristo les suplicamos: reconcíliense con Dios».
(2 Corintios 5,20)

Reconciliados con Dios, reconciliados unos con otros, con nosotros mismos.

Y el Evangelio lo reduce todo a lo esencial:

«Cuando ores, entra en tu cuarto… Cuando ayunes… Cuando des limosna…»
(Mateo 6)

Jesús dice: ora, ayuna, realiza obras de compasión — en secreto.

Un mundo necesitado de sanación

No necesitamos politizar nuestro momento para nombrarlo con honestidad.
Vivimos en un mundo herido y fragmentado. ¡Y, sin embargo, la sanación es posible!
Sí, la Cuaresma puede traernos sanación desde dentro.

Signos de transición, no de vacío

Las imágenes que acompañan esta reflexión —siete momentos de nieve, árboles y huellas humanas— no son accidentales.

Hablan sin palabras.
Los árboles desnudos no están muertos. Son honestos.

La nieve no borra la tierra.
La cubre —de manera protectora— hasta el momento adecuado.

Las huellas nos dicen que alguien ha pasado por allí.
La vida se mueve.
El cambio ya está en marcha.

Estos son paisajes de transición.
Anuncian que algo nuevo está llegando —
no por la fuerza, sino por el arrepentimiento.

Esta es la verdadera esperanza:
silenciosa, firme y enraizada en la fe cristiana.

Fuego sin temor

Las mismas Escrituras nos ofrecen la imagen del fuego al comenzar la Cuaresma, como purificación y renovación.

Isaías describe al Señor como Aquel que purifica en lugar de destruir, quemando lo falso para que permanezca lo verdadero.

Jeremías habla de la palabra de Dios como «un fuego encerrado en mis huesos», no para consumir, sino para impulsar a la fidelidad.

Y a través de Ezequiel, el Señor promete no un reemplazo, sino una transformación:

«Les daré un corazón nuevo y pondré dentro de ustedes un espíritu nuevo».

El fuego bíblico nunca es caótico.
Es intencional.
Ilumina, prueba y prepara.

La Cuaresma dirige ese fuego hacia el interior, no hacia los demás, sino hacia el propio corazón.
Es la obra de Dios dentro de nosotros, quitando lo que endurece y reavivando lo que se ha enfriado.

La Sagrada Familia: una escuela de esperanza

Cuando el camino por delante parece incierto, la Iglesia nos señala silenciosamente un hogar.

Jesús.
María.
José.

Ellos nos enseñan que la esperanza no es un optimismo ingenuo.
Es una confianza firme en el Padre.

Al comenzar el camino de la Cuaresma, tomemos un tiempo para contemplar la vida cotidiana en el hogar de la Sagrada Familia en Nazaret.
Ellos nos enseñan muchas cosas.

Una palabra para quienes llevan el futuro

Finalmente, la Cuaresma no es otra obligación impuesta sobre nosotros.
Es un tiempo privilegiado para orar y pensar en la eternidad y en cómo cada pequeña decisión impactará nuestro destino futuro.

Los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma no son un callejón sin salida.
Son un paso, un camino de autodominio y de redescubrir que Dios ya está entre nosotros.

Caminamos, entonces, con ceniza sobre la cabeza, sabiendo por la fe que la resurrección ya está ante nuestros ojos.

Sí, lo sabemos: ¡Cristo ha resucitado de entre los muertos!
Y por eso, toda Cuaresma auténtica lleva dentro de sí un comienzo nuevo y poderoso.

When I saw the log on the ground, I was about to pass it by.
Nothing about it demanded attention. It was just there—resting on the cold earth, doing what logs do when they are done being trees.

Then I stopped.

Not because I was looking for anything, but because something in me hesitated. The eye lingered. The ordinary shifted, just enough.

Wait a minute, I thought. This looks like a gigantic piece of cinnamon.

I smiled. The thought itself felt slightly absurd, and yet perfectly fitting. So I took a couple of photos, not to capture the log, but to honor the interruption.

There is a difference between seeing and noticing. Seeing is automatic. Noticing asks something of us. It requires a pause—a willingness to let the world speak before we decide what it is.

The cut surface of the log was smooth, its rings exposed like a quiet record of time. The bark, rough and weathered, still carried the memory of standing upright. Cold air pressed against my hands as I leaned closer, and the ground beneath it felt firm, uncomplaining. Even without touching it, the log had weight. Presence.

Somewhere between the texture of wood and the silence of winter, a scent appeared that wasn’t actually there. Cinnamon. Warm, sweet, unmistakable. Not in the air, but in memory. Smell has a way of doing that—arriving without permission, collapsing years into an instant.

That’s when I realized I wanted tea. Cinnamon tea. The kind my grandmother used to make. The kind that warms you from the inside and slows the day down, if you let it.

Later, holding that warm cup, I thought again about the log. About how easily I might have missed it. About how much of the world we label as inanimate simply because it no longer moves, no longer grows, no longer produces. And yet, there it was—speaking without words, offering itself as image, memory, invitation.

The world is full of things that are animate and inanimate. But sometimes, if we stop long enough, those categories feel insufficient.

Not everything that matters moves.
Not everything that speaks has a voice.
And not everything worth noticing asks to be understood.

Some things only ask that we don’t walk past them.

That scene comes from Saint Martin of Tours.

Who was Saint Martin of Tours?

Saint Martin (316–397 AD) was a soldier-turned-Christian who later became a bishop in France. He is one of the earliest and most beloved saints in the Western Church.

What did he do?

He was a Roman soldier as a young man.

He cut his cloak in half to share it with a freezing beggar; later he saw in a dream that the beggar was Christ Himself.

He left the army because he wanted to serve God in peace.

He became a monk, known for humility and compassion.

He became Bishop of Tours, not because he wanted power, but because the people insisted.

He spent the rest of his life helping the poor, healing the sick, and bringing the Gospel to rural areas where many still didn’t know Christ.

In simple terms

Martin was a kind, brave, humble man who went from being a soldier to becoming a shepherd of souls, always standing with the poor and defending the weak.

To sum up,

As a young person, Martin felt that his call in life was not to be a soldier but to bring peace and solace to his fellow human being. You too have felt at times the whisper of doing and going beyond what you do now; a quiet sense that you are called to be something already inscribed in your soul.

No, it is predestination. It is a seed already planted in you.
Something to grasp, to pursue, to go after; just as Martin did.

So have you thought or felt called to “something” say, different, new…?

Teaching one unforgettable Greek word: NAÓS (ναός)

Definition: “the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives.”

On Sunday, November 9^th, 2025 as each year, we honored the Lateran Basilica, the mother and head of all churches; the Pope’s Cathedral; but on this Sunday, the message of Scripture is not about a building in Rome. It’s about a building inside you.

The Scriptures today teach us one Greek word which is the theme I chose to reflect about: NAÓS (ναός): the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives.

That’s what God is building in you.

Ezekiel speaks of how God builds from the inside out. He sees a small stream trickling from the temple. Tiny at first… but it becomes a river that brings life everywhere. It is God’s grace at work in you. God is building His naós (ναός), the inner sanctuary, the place where God lives inside your heart. And He is doing it quietly. Patiently. Persistently.

Indeed, each sacrament you received, each time and moment of conversion in you, each small “yes” that you whisper when you pray, adds beauty to God’s work in you…

Nonetheless, God is not decorating you. He is constructing you. He is working on you.

The Psalmist says something very powerful: God makes the city unshakable. He then prays:

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.”

And we you ask, why is the city unshakable? Because God is within it.

And the same is true for you: your strength does not come from your personality type or talent, but from the naós (ναός): the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives that is already being built inside your soul.

And we can see that some people walk through life quietly shining. They are living temples, carrying God wherever they go.

Saint Paul assertion is piercing: You ARE the NAÓS. Paul doesn’t say you have a temple. He says: You ARE God’s temple.

In Greek: “Naós este” (ναός ἐστε): You are the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives.

God took the construction site of your life and moved in. Despite your fears, your past, your wounds; He builds right there. But He wants your conscious cooperation. He wants you next to Him, saying: “Lord, let’s build this together.”

In the Gospel, Jesus purifies the temple because He wants authentic worship. Then He says, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up,” revealing that His Body is the true naós, the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives.

Through baptism, your body becomes part of His. Meaning: You’re not just someone God visits occasionally. You are His dwelling place, His inner sanctuary.

The Application come in one question: What needs renovation?

What part of my naós (ναός), the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives needs light, cleansing, or rebuilding?

Let Jesus walk into that room. He does not enter to shame you. He enters to restore you.

Today, you are called to walk as a temple where God actually lives.

Yes, honor the basilica in Rome. But honor even more what God is raising inside you.

Walk out of Mass aware you carry a naós (ναός), the inner sanctuary, the place where God actually lives.

Because the world needs living temples; our world needs people who make God visible. Think about that!

Con razón mi abuelita decía: “¿Para qué tanto brinco, estando el suelo tan parejo?” Hay una sabiduría inmensamente profunda en ese dicho. Hay que detenerse para entender que, una vez comprendido, tiene poder curativo.

La pregunta es: ¿Te has detenido a pensar en lo que dejarás cuando te marches?
Si tu respuesta es sí, entonces ya sabes cómo disfrutarlo ahora.

Don’t you just feel like lying down on the leaves and staying there for a long while, unhurried, listening to the music of the wind with the orchestra of trees and living creatures that sing and play in the symphony?

No wonder my grandmother used to say, “Why all the jumping, when the ground is already so even?” There’s an immensely deep wisdom in that saying. You have to pause to realize that, once understood, it carries healing power.

The question is: Have you ever stopped to think about what you’ll leave behind when you’re gone?
If your answer is yes, then you already know how to enjoy it now.

This Gospel is about a door. Lazarus was right outside the rich man’s door, unseen. In the end, that ignored door becomes a big gap no one can cross. Amos warned this long ago. When he says, “They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!” he means their own people were falling apart, and they didn’t care. St. Paul points us the right way: pursue righteousness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness; compete well for the faith. A cold heart builds the gap; mercy builds the bridge.

Ask God for a holy unease—not guilt that freezes you, but grace to care again. Think of the lonely senior next door, the newcomer who sits alone at Mass, the teen drowning in anxiety, the immigrant family lost in paperwork, the person who drives out of this parking lot alone every Sunday. Jesus didn’t walk past us; He stepped into our need and carried us to the Father—Abraham’s side.

Three simple steps this week:

1. See and name. Pick one person you usually pass by. Learn their name. Look them in the eye. Listen for one minute. The rich man knew his brothers inside the house; he never knew the brother at his gate.

2. Share and serve. Do one concrete act: an invite to your table, a ride, a visit, help with a bill, a warm coat, an hour at the pantry. Set a small mercy set-aside—time and a little money you won’t spend on yourself.

3. Pray and persevere. Each day this week, pray 60 seconds with 1 Tim 6: “But you, person of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.
Compete well for the faith.” Ask for eyes that notice and feet that move. Real change comes from small repeats, not one big moment.

At this altar, God closes the gap. He crosses to us in the Body and Blood of His Son. The table from which we receive nourishment must become the table we extend to others.
When we receive the Eucharist, it is not just a rite; it is a living encounter with Christ. But if after Communion we continue ignoring the “Lazarus” at our door—the poor, the marginalized, the lonely—then the Eucharist functions as an uncomfortable mirror: it reflects our incoherence. It forces us to see the contradiction between what we celebrate (Christ giving Himself for all) and what we live (closing ourselves to others).
On the other hand, when after receiving Christ we go out to seek Lazarus, the Eucharist becomes a bridge: it unites what we receive at the altar with real life, it connects our comfort with the need of our brother, and it opens the passage from the temporal to the eternal.Brothers and sisters, open the door now, so there won’t be a gap later. Chase what is right; let your heart be moved; take one step of mercy this week—go find Lazarus.

Learn a name. Do one act. Pray one minute.

Hermanos, no podemos vivir como turistas espirituales, brincando de retiro en retiro. Los retiros son bendiciones, pero si se convierten en consumo religioso, nos quedamos buscando solo la emoción, la catarsis, las lágrimas… sin pasar a la vida cotidiana con una verdadera conversión. Es como tomar medicina sin cambiar el estilo de vida que enferma: siempre enfermo, siempre medicado, nunca sano. San Pablo lo dijo con claridad: ‘Siempre aprendiendo y nunca llegando al conocimiento de la verdad’ (2 Tim 3,7).

Lo que falta es acompañamiento personal: dirección espiritual, confesión frecuente, una comunidad que camine contigo. Falta disciplina de vida cristiana: oración diaria, sacramentos, obras de misericordia, servicio concreto. Y falta compromiso parroquial: en vez de andar de retiro en retiro, enraizarse en la comunidad de fe, en el altar dominical, en la misión diaria, y no vivir de evento en evento.

La verdadera sanación no se da en acumular experiencias, sino en dejar que Cristo habite en lo cotidiano: en tu casa, en tu matrimonio, en tu parroquia. El pecado enferma, sí, pero Cristo sana al que se queda con Él y camina con Él. No confundamos sentirse tocado con haber sido transformado. Por eso Jesús preguntaba: ‘¿Quieres quedar sano?’ (Jn 5,6). El retiro es el inicio, no el final. La sanación es caminar con Cristo en novedad de vida.”

Hermanos: decimos que el pecado enferma, y eso es verdad. Pero convengamos en algo más doloroso aún: no siempre la gracia que sentimos en un retiro llega hasta la mesa del día a día. Pablo lo describió con brutal honestidad: “Porque no hago el bien que quiero, sino el mal que no quiero” (Rm 7). Ahí está la condición humana: la lucha interior, la inclinación que rompe la armonía del corazón.

¿Y qué produce esa condición miserable? Maldad, venganza, envidias, chismes; hasta el deseo de destruir al prójimo. No es metáfora: cuando el alma está enferma, el enfermo puede volverse agresor. Entonces pregunto con pesar pastoral: ¿de qué sirvieron los retiros —las lágrimas, las canciones, las promesas— si luego estamos dispuestos a destruir a otros?

Si la experiencia de Dios no transforma la vida concreta, se queda en espectáculo. Es una gracia vana: tocados por dos horas, y luego volvemos al mismo patrón que nos enferma. La sanación auténtica obliga a tres cambios visibles:

Conversión interior que se hace visible

La gracia no se guarda en el pecho como un souvenir. Si Dios me toca, debe cambiar mi manera de mirar al que me ofendió, mi respuesta ante la injusticia, mi lenguaje en la familia. La conversión verdadera se nota en obras: en el perdón, en la reparación, en la humildad.

Acompañamiento y disciplina

No alcanza el “sentirse bien” una vez al año. Necesitamos dirección espiritual, confesión frecuente, y una comunidad que nos mire con amor y verdad. Los retiros son el empujón; el camino de discipulado es la maratón. Sin rutina de oración, sacramentos, lectura de la Palabra y ayuno, la emoción se disipa.

Responsabilidad comunitaria

Si la comunidad solo ofrece eventos, no hay cambio estructural. La parroquia debe ser escuela de virtudes y taller de reconciliación: grupos pequeños que practiquen el perdón, acompañamiento para heridas familiares, exigencia amorosa para abandonar hábitos destructivos.

Hermanos, la pregunta de Jesús sigue vigente: “¿Quieres quedar sano?” (Jn 5). Sanar implica renunciar a algo —a la rutina del resentimiento, al “yo tengo razón”, al deseo de hacer caer al otro— y tomar la cruz de la reconciliación. Sanar implica restaurar relaciones: pedir perdón, reparar el daño, pedir ayuda cuando no podemos solos.

Por eso los retiros deben terminar en decisiones concretas: una confesión, un compromiso de acompañamiento, una reconciliación pública o privada, un plan de vida espiritual. Si no, hemos gastado la gracia en nostalgia.

Terminemos con esto: que la gracia no nos deje en el éxtasis, sino que nos haga obreros de paz. Si la experiencia de Dios no nos hace menos vengativos, menos chismosos, menos dispuestos a destruir al otro, entonces no hemos entrado realmente en la novedad de vida que Cristo nos ofrece.

¿Quieres sanar de verdad? Entonces quédate: quédate en la comunidad, entra en dirección espiritual, cambia hábitos, pide perdón y ama a quien no lo merece. Ahí comienza la verdadera sanación.

1. Dos luces en un mismo día

El calendario litúrgico del 17 de septiembre nos presenta un contraste fecundo:

• San Francisco de Asís, en la montaña de La Verna, recibiendo en su carne las llagas de Cristo, testimonio ardiente de amor hasta la identificación con el Crucificado.

• San Roberto Belarmino, jesuita, cardenal, teólogo y pastor de almas, defendiendo la fe católica con claridad y mansedumbre en la turbulencia de la Reforma protestante.

Ambos, en su estilo, muestran que la santidad sacerdotal no es uniforme, sino múltiple, pero siempre marcada por la cruz de Cristo y la fidelidad a la Iglesia.

2. El testimonio de Francisco: el sacerdote cruciforme

En 1224, Francisco oraba en el monte de La Verna, ayunando en honor a San Miguel. Allí, contemplando al Crucificado, recibió los estigmas en manos, pies y costado.

• Este acontecimiento es único: por primera vez un santo lleva en su cuerpo las llagas del Redentor.

• Es un lenguaje de fuego: el amor de Cristo no sólo se contempla, se imprime en la carne.

• Para el sacerdote de hoy, Francisco enseña que el ministerio no es una profesión sino una configuración con Cristo Víctima.

Aplicación pastoral: El sacerdote que no se deja marcar por las heridas de su pueblo y por la entrega diaria se convierte en un funcionario. Francisco grita: “Sacerdote, deja que Cristo te marque. No huyas de las llagas.”

3. El testimonio de Belarmino: el sacerdote doctor y pastor

Nacido en 1542, Roberto Belarmino entró en la Compañía de Jesús y destacó como teólogo en tiempos de división.

• Fue consejero de Papas, cardenal y obispo de Capua, pero vivió con austeridad y humildad.

• Escribió catecismos claros y defendió la fe con rigor intelectual, siempre con espíritu de mansedumbre.

• Fue un maestro de conciencia sacerdotal: estudió mucho, pero nunca perdió de vista al pueblo sencillo.

Aplicación pastoral: Belarmino enseña que la santidad sacerdotal pasa también por la formación doctrinal sólida, la fidelidad a la Iglesia y la caridad en la enseñanza. Un sacerdote sin estudio es presa de modas; un sacerdote sin caridad, es un juez sin alma.

4. Convergencia de los dos modelos

• Francisco aporta el ardor del corazón crucificado.

• Roberto aporta la claridad de la mente iluminada.

• Ambos unidos proclaman: la Iglesia necesita sacerdotes configurados con Cristo en el amor y en la verdad.

Hoy, en medio de secularización, confusión doctrinal y cansancio pastoral, este doble testimonio se vuelve urgente. La santidad sacerdotal exige:

1. Corazón herido: compasión, cercanía, oración, entrega hasta el dolor.

2. Mente clara: estudio, fidelidad, capacidad de dialogar sin diluir la fe.

3. Unidad entre cruz y magisterio: ni romanticismo vacío ni intelectualismo seco, sino la conjunción de caridad y verdad.

5. Invitación concreta a los sacerdotes

Queridos hermanos en el sacerdocio:

• No teman a las llagas de su ministerio: cansancio, incomprensión, soledad. Allí los espera Cristo.

• No descuiden su formación permanente: el pueblo necesita pastores que sepan responder con inteligencia y mansedumbre a los desafíos del tiempo.

• No se conformen con ser gestores: sean testigos. Como Francisco, dejen que su vida sea una parábola viviente; como Belarmino, que su palabra sea clara, fiel y luminosa.

6. Conclusión devocional

Hoy celebramos a un santo que ardió de amor hasta llevar en su cuerpo la Pasión y a un santo que defendió la fe hasta escribirla con claridad para las generaciones.
Ambos nos invitan a pedir a Dios sacerdotes:

• con corazón de fuego y mente de luz,

• con las llagas del amor y la doctrina de la verdad,

• capaces de ser signos vivos de Cristo Pastor, Maestro y Víctima.

“Señor, danos sacerdotes santos, crucificados contigo como Francisco, y doctos y fieles como Belarmino. Que en su entrega y en su enseñanza, tu Iglesia encuentre siempre guía y esperanza.”

El Crismón (☧), formado por las letras griegas ji (Χ – jí) y rho (Ρ – rhó), es mucho más que un adorno: es el nombre de Cristo grabado en símbolo. Desde tiempos de Constantino se convirtió en signo de victoria, no de un emperador, sino de la fe que vence al mundo. A su lado aparecen el Alfa (Α – álfa) y la Omega (Ω – ômega), primera y última letra del alfabeto griego, recordándonos aquellas palabras del Apocalipsis: “Yo soy el Alfa y la Omega, el Principio y el Fin”. En otras palabras: todo nace en Él y todo termina en Él.

Alrededor del mozaico vemos la estrella de seis puntas, el hexagrama, dos triángulos entrelazados: lo humano que sube en busca de Dios y lo divino que baja en misericordia. En el centro se cruza todo en el Crismón: Cristo mismo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre, unión viva de cielo y tierra.

Caminar sobre este mosaico es una catequesis silenciosa. Nos enseña que la fe no es solo levantar la mirada al cielo, sino poner los pies en el suelo con Cristo como fundamento. Cada paso sobre este signo es un acto de confianza: nuestra historia no está suelta ni rota, está sostenida, reunida y conducida hacia la plenitud en Él.

Así, el Crismón proclama la victoria de Cristo, el Alfa y la Omega nos hablan de su eternidad, y el hexagrama nos recuerda que la Encarnación es el gran encuentro entre lo divino y lo humano. Todo converge en el centro: en Cristo, el Señor de la historia.

Jueves de la Vigésima Tercera Semana del Tiempo Ordinario

Primera lectura: Colosenses 3,12-17; Salmo responsorial: Salmo 150,1b-2.3-4.5-6; Evangelio: Lucas 6,27-38

Cuando Pablo habla de revestirse de Cristo, no se refiere a un disfraz ni a una capa exterior que se puede quitar a voluntad. Describe algo sacramental, algo ontológico. En el bautismo, se despoja del hombre viejo (Col 3,9) y se da uno nuevo (3,10). Los Padres lo veían como una segunda piel. Cirilo de Jerusalén dijo a los catecúmenos: «Están revestidos del manto de la salvación… no tejido por manos humanas, sino forjado por el Espíritu».

Así que, cuando Pablo dice «revestíos de compasión, bondad y humildad», no está repartiendo virtudes como prendas separadas. Está nombrando los hilos de un manto sin costuras: Cristo mismo. Vivir sin ellos es despojarse de Cristo y volver a caminar desnudo en la vergüenza de Adán.

Y aquí el Evangelio de Lucas insiste en el punto: «Amen a sus enemigos… den sin esperar nada a cambio… sean misericordiosos como su Padre es misericordioso». ¿Por qué mandatos tan imposibles? Porque la misericordia no es un accesorio moral; es la textura del propio ser de Dios. Revestirse de Cristo significa vestir la misma tela que Él usó cuando fue golpeado, despojado y burlado, pero perdonó.

Piénsenlo: la vestimenta de la que habla Pablo es la misma túnica que Cristo usó cuando cargó la cruz, la túnica que no defendió cuando los soldados la sortearon. Estamos envueltos en esa túnica para que su paciencia y perdón no solo sean admirados, sino encarnados en nosotros.

La imagen que Pablo da de la vestimenta no se trata de la apariencia externa, sino de la encarnación. Cristo está tan cerca que se convierte en nuestra propia piel. En el bautismo, no recibimos simplemente un símbolo; fuimos verdaderamente revestidos de Él, se nos dio una segunda piel que cubre nuestra vergüenza e irradia su gloria. Revestirnos de Cristo es dejar que Él sea la parte visible de nuestras vidas, para que cuando las personas nos conozcan, no toquen nuestro orgullo ni nuestro resentimiento, sino su paciencia, su dulzura, su misericordia. Por eso Pablo menciona la compasión, la bondad, la humildad y el perdón: no como virtudes separadas que debemos esforzarnos más, sino como los hilos del manto sin costuras de Cristo que ahora nos envuelve.

Y Lucas nos muestra dónde debe probarse ese manto: cuando el enemigo maldice, cuando el ladrón roba, cuando el mundo nos hiere. Si Cristo es nuestra piel, incluso en esos momentos, lo que otros encuentran a través de nosotros no es represalia, sino misericordia; no venganza, sino bendición.

Al final, Colosenses y Lucas convergen: Pablo nos da el manto, Lucas nos muestra cómo debe llevarse. El manto está tejido de compasión, bondad, humildad y paciencia. Y el manto se reconoce no cuando estoy con amigos, sino cuando me enfrento a enemigos. Es entonces cuando el mundo ve si Cristo es mi piel o si he vuelto a los viejos harapos de Adán. Así que hoy, pregúntate: ¿quién es la persona a la que más me cuesta perdonar, aquella cuya presencia se siente como papel de lija en mi alma? Ahí es donde debemos vestirnos con el manto de Cristo. No permitas que se enfrenten a tu irritación ni a tu orgullo, sino a la paciencia y la misericordia del Señor que te cubre como una segunda piel. En ese momento, no solo te parecerás a Cristo, sino que permitirás que otros lo toquen a través de ti.
