The argument tends to stop as soon as they get to this point. Emotions are individual and so poetry is individual. Therefore, poetry will inherently contain a personal bias. So what? The problem manifests when subjectivity is confused with prejudice. The former relates to the fact that I observed this and therefore I am writing about this. The latter is the fact that I have set my thoughts on this and therefore I will record it. The former is a natural tendency of the human experience. The latter is an informed decision. Poets are able to mistake the two and deftly transfer the responsibility of the two onto the reader.

It is said by Wordsworth that the former and the latter can be untangled. He has claimed that poetry is the release of raw, unfiltered emotion. It is actually the replaying and expression of emotion in a calm state. Essentially, a poet will experience an emotion, let it be, and come back to it later with a hope that the impact and quality of the replay and expressed emotion is better than what they experienced. Calmness is perceived as a way the poet is able to improve and purify the impact of the emotion. The, perhaps, ideal state for a poet is to experience the emotion and let it settle for a long enough time so that any unpleasant impact of the emotion is able to be experienced by the poet.

Eliot would have considered this view to be more naive. While relating to Eliot’s critique of the bad poet, he says the bad poet is either unbearably aware or painfully unaware. Wordsworth’s view interprets Eliot’s critique as a poet’s bad faith. Where Wordsworth sees tranquility, Eliot sees the bad poet’s disguise of prejudices. He says poets think of their prejudices and are not able to express them; however, poets learn to express them with such skill that they themselves don’t see them anymore. The meter takes the blame. The distance between the emotion and the poet is not from the poet’s prejudices, but from practice.

Though she was not responding to Wordsworth, Audre Lorde suggests a way out. She sees poetry as a way to define the unutterable, as opposed to Wordsworth’s notion of poetry as a way to remember. Wordsworth considered the poet’s job to be to give the emotion time to settle; Lorde considers it more important to allow the emotion to be expressed before it loses its potency. Unlike Wordsworth, for whom tranquility hints at honesty, for Lorde that honesty is expressed with time and a sense of urgency. The poet should write the poem, even when the poem is so rough that it might offend.

If the three of them are ever in the same room, they’ll never get to poetry for their argument. They will be too busy debating if reflection tips a person off to their flaws or if it teaches them to conceal them more effectively. Wordsworth supports the pause. Eliot asks what the pause yields. Lorde resolutely skips the pause and maintains that the unpolished line is the only one that can be trusted.

We will call this the tougher argument and one that deserves defense, craft is not the neutral ground. The more skillful a writer becomes, the more a distasteful belief can be rendered as something that is completely justifiable. An awkward, clumsy, prejudiced sentence is easily spotted because it is ugly, and readers are quick to pick up on this ugly writing. However, a well-formed, prejudiced sentence is difficult to identify because of our cultural conditioning that links beauty with truth. Skill is detrimental to honesty. It can even be more effective than a blunt lie.

Craft is the amplifier. It does not purify or reveal the poet’s intent. Poetry makes whatever the poet holds even more pronounced. This is the danger that comes with writing well. It makes some people think the more pronounces a line is the more true. Poetry will show your biases if people ever read your poetry. It will also help you become skilled enough to realize you are the one hiding them.

We have been told about the “darker period” in Indian democracy, which is what’s referred to when Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency. The peculiar thing that we don’t talk about is that emergency provisions have always been there, it was never unconstitutional to invoke them. Nevertheless, their misuse amounted to grave injustice.

Let’s come to the book. Arendt doesn’t open with the concept of the dictator, because she’s opposed to the fixed idea of someone sitting at the top dictating, independent of the conditions on the ground responding to his tune. Instead, she opens with loneliness, which should not be confused with solitude, because the latter is chosen by one, and certainly not imposed. Loneliness, then, is about belonging to nothing, no class, no structure, nothing that can answer what our place is in the hierarchy or wherever. She calls it superfluousness. Just a number.

Readers should, beforehand, know that Marx had a different conception of the same problem. Marx staked the whole revolution on the working class because they were organised. They had a shared enemy and, ultimately, a shared consciousness solely focused on bringing down capitalism. The structure, in essence, worked as the engine.

Arendt didn’t see it this way. The ranks of fascist and totalitarian movements were not filled by the organised worker. These people were ruined shopkeepers, frustrated clerks, dissatisfied students, and intellectuals abandoned by their institutions. In essence, they were left holding nothing but their own superfluousness.

Before superfluousness, though, there is the word that prepares the ground for it. Arendt spends nearly a hundred pages on nineteenth century antisemitic pamphlets before Hitler even enters the book, and the reason, I think, is that the insult always arrives before the violence, every single time, without exception. A state doesn’t need to intend a massacre for the word vermin to matter. It matters the moment it is said, because it tells a citizen, well before any policeman has laid a hand on them, exactly what category of thing they now are in the eyes of power.

And underneath both of these sits what I’d call her real fear, one that had nothing to do with people believing propaganda. Her worry was that constant lying, over time, produces a population that stops believing anything at all, a population that loses the very instrument needed to tell fact from fiction. And such a population isn’t gullible, not really. It is simply available, for whatever story comes along next.

Life is the reflection of every colour carried to us by that travelling lamp we call the Sun. We all have emotions, we have feelings, we cry, we laugh, we grow angry. These are the substitutes for those seven colours.

Since childhood I have loved all of them, but sometimes I wear no colour at all. Sometimes I wear no emotion, no feeling, no tears, no sorrow, no happiness. I simply keep myself blank, painting my days in only two phases of life: Black and White.

White has always given me hope, because it is the only phase in which I can paint my dreams exactly as they appear within my soul. But we know that only self-satisfaction lets us fly high for those dreams. Self-satisfaction, here, means doing something that leaves you feeling, at the end of it, that today was a worthwhile day of your life. Today was such a day for me.

I got an opportunity through NSS to visit Gandhi Ashram, as per the predetermined schedule. And an even greater fortune awaited me there: the chance to teach children. I had gone in with the intention of teaching strictly, in a disciplined way. On hearing this, Saksham said, “Be like Kansal Sir, not like SKC,” meaning, don’t observe a vow of silence, and don’t be overly strict. I realised he was right. Everyone feels more at ease in Kansal Sir’s class than in SKC’s or Lata Ma’am’s, and I understood why.

The senior members assigned me the second and third grade, which I later realised was not the easiest option. I usually teach humanities to eleventh grade, twelfth grade, and college students, students who already grasp why they are studying. These younger children didn’t yet know the meaning of education, or why they were being taught. In my view, before we read anything, we should know why we are reading it. A thing done without purpose is a thing wasted. And yes, they were mischievous too, but that was never really an issue. I have passed through that phase myself, so I understood it from the inside.

At five in the evening, when the classes ended, Mohit, Saksham and I carried the same quiet smile of satisfaction. We had begun, in our own small way, the process of returning something to society. And there is no greater gift to give at this stage of life than that. The purpose of life is always to give back, to society and to the world around us. And fortunately, none of that requires you to be a topper, a genius, or the most intelligent person in the room. The only thing it asks for is a kind heart.

I went there to teach them, but by the end of the day I realised I had been taught, by myself. Learning experience is more valuable, more real, than earning a degree, a mark sheet, or a certificate of knowledge.

And black, the colour I left behind earlier, black is the phase where I can hide anything from the world. In the sense of keeping a secret close, black is often the better option. Together, black and white form a combination of peace, mindfulness, and a gratification that lasts.

And do you know what my gratification was, today?

It came when the students were leaving for their homes, and one of the girls, Minakshi, turned to me and said, “Aaj bahut accha laga, Vikas ji Sir.” I couldn’t tell you how that moment felt. A ten-CGPA year would not have made me happier than that one sentence, because a CGPA is only temporary contentment. That girl’s words were something else entirely: a lasting, bountiful gratification.

I will leave you with a line I return to often, from Fennell Hudson: the speed of modern life punishes those with an honest heart. Qualities like kindness, sincerity, and gentleness are too often mistaken for weakness in a world built for speed. But these are the very qualities that make a person good. And if we don’t hold on to them deliberately, they slip away like sand through open fingers.

I was solving a General Studies Paper III paper at home, and I stumbled upon a question that specifically named that great thinker.

The question read like this: "Professor Amartya Sen has advocated important reforms in the realms of primary education and primary health care. What are your suggestions to improve their status and performance?"

Back in 2021, one of my professors told me that big institutions don’t consider an individual on face value unless they’re Buddha, Gandhi, Ambedkar, or Nehru. So the inclusion of Professor Sen came as a shocker - not because I thought him to be of lesser stature, but because contemporary thinkers aren’t given that much spotlight, however grand their ideas may be. This question lingered in my head for a long while, until I decided I would read this man. And that’s how he became one of my earliest literary superheroes at twenty.

Since I was making myself familiar with India’s culture of inclusivity and pluralism - I believed India to be a mosaic of cultures - it was obvious for me to pick up The Argumentative Indian.

The Argumentative Indian did not disappoint. I remember reading the opening essay and feeling a strange sense of validation - the idea that India’s identity was never singular, never a monolith to be defended, but a centuries-old habit of dissent and dialogue, going back to the Buddhist councils, to Akbar’s debates at Fatehpur Sikri, to the fact that this country had been arguing with itself long before anyone called it a democracy. I was, at the time, trying to make sense of the diversity I had grown up around - Jalore’s Hindu-Muslim-Jain coexistence, the layered histories that don’t sit neatly on a syllabus page - and here was a Nobel laureate telling me that the argument itself, not its resolution, was the tradition.

In the early essays, there’s a specific quote from Raja Rammohan Roy that resonated with me the most: “Just consider how terrible the day of your death will be. Others will go on speaking and you will not be able to argue back.” It stayed with me because it taught me that silence is the only debate you’re guaranteed to lose.

From there I went where any infatuation goes - indiscriminately. Development as Freedom next, where I first properly met the capability approach: the idea that development isn’t income rising but freedom expanding - the freedom to be educated, to be healthy, to participate, to simply be something more than a statistic in someone else’s model. That single reframe changed how I read every subsequent policy question, every GS answer I would go on to write: not how much, but who gets to.

And somewhere in all this reading, Sen became - as I said I’d get to - an informal linguist for me too. I learnt to build sentences from listening to him in TV interviews.

In one interview, a journalist asked him about the monumental failure of demonetisation and pushed Professor Sen to answer in binary - either yes or no. When he didn’t answer clearly, the journalist insisted on saying yes, to which the Professor replied, “That’s a good summary.” For me, it was rebellious. It was the epitome of how moderation can be brought into a bitter conversation, even when you don’t agree with the other person’s views. I’ve always felt Sen possesses a grand scale of eloquence, and he uses it exactly when it’s needed - never more, never less.

I don’t know if that professor knew that big institutions care not only about Buddha, Gandhi, or Ambedkar, but about contemporary thinkers too - the only condition being that their ideas must overshadow the very institutions that would otherwise gatekeep them. Only then does the exception become the norm, as was the case with Professor Sen.

PS - one of my friends, Shrutika, once teased me for being so obsessed with Sen’s books that she wished me “Happy birthday” on 3rd November (his birthday) instead of my own. Haha :)

Love, in its most authentic form, has never been about ownership. It is the only human emotion that expands when given away freely and diminishes the moment it tries to hold on. Yet across centuries, cultures, and personal histories, love has been routinely confused with possession, with the right to claim, to restrict, to define another person’s existence by one’s own needs. This essay explores the idea that true love, far from being a cage, is the key that opens one.

The Illusion of Possession

The instinct to possess what we love is ancient and understandable. Evolutionary psychology tells us that attachment is a survival mechanism. We guard what we value. But love is not merely an evolutionary artifact. It is also a moral and spiritual practice, and when reduced to possession, it ceases to be love and becomes control.

Erich Fromm, in The Art of Loving, drew a sharp distinction between mature love and immature love. Immature love says: “I love you because I need you.” Mature love says: “I need you because I love you.” The difference is subtle but seismic. In the first, the beloved exists to fill a void in the lover. In the second, the beloved is a whole person whose existence is cherished independent of what they provide.

Possessive love places a condition on its object: you may exist, but only within the boundaries I draw. It is love that masquerades as devotion but is, in truth, anxiety dressed in affection.

Freedom as the Language of Love

Rabindranath Tagore wrote: “I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times, in life after life, in age after age, forever.” What is striking about Tagore’s conception of love is its spaciousness. It does not clutch. It returns, it recognizes, it flows, like water that finds its level without being forced.

The philosopher Simone Weil argued that love in its purest form is attention, a radical, selfless act of seeing another person as they truly are, not as we wish them to be. To love someone is not to mold them into a shape convenient for us, but to witness them in their full, sometimes inconvenient, humanity.

This is what parents who truly love their children understand instinctively. A mother who has nurtured a child through years of dependence must, at a certain point, practice the paradox of love: to love is to prepare someone to leave you. Jijabai did not raise Shivaji to remain in Pune. She raised him to build an empire. The greatest act of her love was not holding him. It was forming him so completely that he could go.

Love in Public Life: Nations, Movements, Ideas

The logic of freedom-giving love is not confined to personal relationships. It applies with equal force to how societies love their citizens, how leaders love their people, and how nations relate to each other.

Mahatma Gandhi’s ahimsa was, at its core, a form of love extended not just to friends but to adversaries. It did not seek to possess or defeat the British. It sought to awaken their conscience. Non-violent resistance says: I will not destroy you to free myself. That restraint, that refusal to become what you oppose, is love’s highest political expression.

Similarly, the anti-colonial project across Asia and Africa was not simply about gaining territory. The most enlightened of its leaders understood that freedom, of a people, a culture, an identity, cannot be given by force. Nelson Mandela, emerging from 27 years in prison, chose reconciliation over retribution. He could have claimed his suffering as license for possession, to remake South Africa in the image of his pain. Instead, he gave his country what love gives: the freedom to become something better than its worst moments.

When Love Becomes a Cage

History is also full of the other kind of love, the kind that imprisons. Colonialism itself was justified, grotesquely, as love. The “civilizing mission,” the burden of the superior to guide the inferior. But this was possession masquerading as care. It did not ask what the colonized wanted. It decided for them. Real love does not decide for its object. It asks.

In personal life, the consequences of possessive love are no less damaging. Domestic violence, honour killings, obsessive relationships, all emerge from the same distorted premise: that love grants ownership. The beloved becomes property, and any assertion of independence is read as betrayal. India’s courts deal with thousands of such cases every year, where love, or what is called love, is weaponized to control, punish, and ultimately destroy.

Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet warned of this with rare precision: “Love one another but make not a bond of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.” The image is instructive. A sea connects shores. It does not merge them. Two people in love remain two people. The space between them is not emptiness but the very medium through which love travels.

The Deepest Freedom: Loving Without Expectation

The Bhagavad Gita’s doctrine of Nishkama Karma, action without attachment to its fruits, finds a profound parallel in love. To love without expectation of return is the most difficult and the most liberating form of love. It does not ask: what will I get? It asks only: what can I give?

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam often spoke of his mother’s love in precisely these terms. She asked nothing of him except that he become the best version of himself. When he became a scientist, a missile man, a President, she had long since left the world. Her love had no interest in possession. It had invested entirely in his freedom.

Conclusion

We live in an age that has commodified love, reduced it to relationship statuses, ownership of another’s time, and the anxiety of being replaced. Social media has made love into a performance of possession: the tagged photographs, the public declarations, the visible proof that someone belongs to someone else.

But love, in its truest form, has always been more radical than that. It is the only force that increases by being given away. It is the only bond that strengthens by releasing its grip. Radha let Krishna go. Mandela chose reconciliation. Jijabai released Shivaji into history. The Chipko women hugged trees not to own the forest but to free it.

To love is not to possess. To love is to create the conditions in which another soul, a person, a people, an idea, can become most fully itself. That is not loss. That is the highest form of human giving.

And perhaps that is the only definition of love worth having.

I. Wave or particle?

Light, as physics taught us long ago, refuses to be just one thing. It is both wave and particle, depending entirely on how you choose to look at it. Life, I think, is exactly the same.

In its particle nature, life moves in discrete quanta: the highs where you work with frightening intensity, the lows where momentum simply vanishes. You are either at an energy level or you are not. There is no half-measure to a crisis, and no half-measure to a breakthrough.

But zoom out far enough, and the discontinuity disappears. The highs and lows average into something persistent, something that simply - goes on. That is the wave nature of life: not a single peak or trough, but the whole curve, summed.

II. The infinite plane

A lifespan, at most twenty-five thousand days, give or take - is a terrifyingly short experiment. The question, then, is not how to extend it, but how to make it dense with meaning.

Electrostatics offers one answer. Consider the electric field of an infinite plane: it does not decay with distance. No matter how far you travel from the surface, the field remains constant, indifferent to the inverse-square diminishment that governs every other charged body. It simply persists.

To live well is to behave like that plane: to make your desire to learn completely independent of age, fatigue, circumstance. To be able to say, honestly, that the field has not fallen off - not even a little.

III. The electric dipole

Yet the infinite plane is an ideal. The real difficulty is noise.

As we move forward in time - the fourth dimension, the one we cannot pause - external agitations accumulate. Distraction, anxiety, the low hum of other people’s urgency. The default human state is not concentration; it is dispersion.

An electric dipole solves this problem elegantly. Two equal and opposite charges, separated by a small distance: the net charge is zero, but the system is not inert. The charges cancel each other not because they are weak, but because the driving force - the dipole moment - is strong and directed. The origin you choose to measure from does not change the physics.

The person who is truly driven does not have fewer distractions than the rest of us. They simply have a dipole strong enough that the noise cancels itself out.

The laws of physics did not intend to be a philosophy. But then again, neither did most great ideas.

For nineteen months, I lived in that room.

I had written the UPSC Mains in September 2023. Then came the waiting - that specific, suspended state that every serious aspirant knows but nobody quite prepares you for. The world outside kept its pace. People got jobs, got married, moved cities, made plans. I stayed. Not because I had no choice but because something in me had quietly decided that until the verdict arrived, I was not quite real. I was a rough draft. Not ready for circulation.

The first floor. The same ceiling every morning. Days that were not bad exactly - just identical. Monotony is underrated as a form of suffering. People talk about grief and failure and heartbreak. Nobody talks about the slow violence of sameness. Of waking up and knowing with perfect certainty what the next sixteen hours will look like, and the sixteen after that.

What surprised me - what I did not expect - was how far inward it went. I was not alone in that house. My parents were there, on the other side of walls I had not physically built but had constructed just as deliberately. I avoided them. Not out of hostility. Out of something harder to name - a shame that had no single source, a hyperawareness of being seen in a state I had not chosen, a need to keep the interior invisible until I had something to show for it.

I was, without knowing the word for it yet, underground.

I came to Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground somewhere in the middle of all this. I don’t remember exactly when. I remember the feeling of reading it - that particular unease of encountering a mirror you didn’t know you’d walked past.

The underground man is not a villain. That’s the first thing people misread about him. He is not even, fundamentally, a misanthrope. He is someone of acute consciousness - someone who thinks so clearly, so relentlessly, so far ahead that thinking itself becomes the obstacle. He sees the wall. He understands the wall completely. He cannot ram his head against it like the men of action do. But he cannot accept it either. So he stands before it, perfectly aware, perfectly paralyzed.

He doesn’t want to be alone. He wants desperately not to be. But wanting and allowing are not the same muscle, and his has atrophied from disuse.

I read that and thought - he has it easier. He is fiction. His suffering has the dignity of being written down by a genius, shaped into something with meaning and form. Mine was just a first floor and a ceiling and days that looked exactly like each other.

But the recognition was total. The withdrawal from people while secretly starving for them. The pride that had curdled into something that looked like indifference. The exhausting performance of being fine. The sense that you are living at one remove from your own life, watching it through glass, unable to press your hand against the surface.

Worse, I thought more than once. What he describes - I feel it worse.

Then February.

Not a moment. Not a revelation. Just - a conversation. Online. About Camus.

I don’t know what I expected, if I expected anything. But she spoke about Camus the way people speak when a book has genuinely lived inside them. Not recitation. Not performance. The actual thing.

And something in me that had been very still for a very long time - moved.

We were talking about the absurd. About Sisyphus. About how Camus looks at a man condemned to roll a boulder up a hill for eternity, watches it roll back down, and concludes - one must imagine Sisyphus happy. Not because the situation changes. Because the man does. Because he owns his fate so completely that fate loses its power over him.

I had been living the absurd for nineteen months without a name for it. Preparing for something with no guaranteed return. Rolling the boulder. Watching it come back. Doing it again. And somewhere in the middle of it I had made the underground man’s mistake - I had confused consciousness of the absurdity with permission to stop living.

Camus says no. He says the absurd is not an excuse. It is an invitation.

She said something along those lines, or maybe I am reconstructing it now, folding meaning backward onto the moment. But that’s what I heard. And in my head, without warning or explanation, the score from Oppenheimer began.

Hans Zimmer’s “Destroyer of Worlds.” That low, gathering, inevitable sound. The music Nolan chose for the Trinity test - for the moment Oppenheimer watches the sky go white and hears, inside himself, the Bhagavad Gita. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

I was sitting in a room, talking through a screen about French philosophy, and something was detonating.

That is what real connection does to a carefully constructed isolation.

It destroys it.

Not gently. Not gradually. It finds the one crack and then the whole architecture comes down. Nineteen months of walls - and one conversation about a man and his boulder.

Dostoevsky’s underground man, when connection is finally offered to him, destroys it. Liza reaches out and he pushes her away. He cannot help it. He has been underground so long he no longer knows how to receive light without flinching.

I think about that. I think about how close I was to being him.

How the conversation could have been just another conversation. How I could have kept the glass in place, nodded and retreated, gone back to the ceiling.

I don’t know what made the difference. Camus, maybe. The boulder on the hill. The decision - conscious or not - to imagine Sisyphus happy. To own the situation so completely that it loses its hold.

Or maybe just her. The specific quality of her attention. The way she spoke about books as though they were alive and urgent and not yet finished speaking.

I have been thinking about what it means to read during the hardest periods of your life. People say reading is escape. I don’t think that’s quite right - or not all of it. The books I read in those nineteen months were not escapes. Dostoevsky did not offer me an exit. Frankl, in the concentration camp, did not tell me things would be fine.

What they offered was something more honest and more useful - the knowledge that someone had been here before. In the underground. In the camp. In the absurd. And had found language for it. Had made the suffering speakable.

There is a particular survival in that. Not rescue. Not resolution. Just - you are not the first. You are not alone in this room. Someone has already written it down.

And then, if you are lucky, someone comes along and talks to you about it.

And the music plays.

And the walls come down.

Schopenhauer(S): Because what they seek is not light, but the comfort of longing. Fulfilment is terrifying—it strips them of their sorrow’s familiar warmth.

Me: But if one offers only sincerity, quietly, like a candle in storm, is it weakness when that flame is left to die alone?

S: No, it is not weakness. It is a testament. The world often confuses noise with meaning. The softest truths are the most ignored.

Me: Then what becomes of the candle?

S: It melts. It learns. And if it is wise—it does not relight itself in the same storm again.

Me: Master, what happens to a flame that burns only for the warmth of another?

Schopenhauer: It either warms the other and perishes in gratitude, or it burns alone, unseen—its light mistaken for a flicker in the wind.

Me: And what of the one who passes by that fire, indifferent?

Schopenhauer: Perhaps they were never cold. Or worse, they feared what warmth might demand of them—so they chose the comfort of shadows.

Me: So I was foolish?

Schopenhauer: Not foolish—only rare. The world mocks intensity because it cannot bear the weight of sincerity. But remember: the fire that is ignored still illuminates the cave.

Me: Then what remains for the fire, Master?

Schopenhauer: To burn quietly. To cease hoping for echoes in a world built for silence. And in that silence, to learn dignity.

Me: Even when it aches?

Schopenhauer: Especially then. For there is nobility in loving without audience, and freedom in finally letting go of the hand that never truly reached back.

Me: So I’ll stop writing her name in the smoke.

Schopenhauer: Yes. Let the wind carry what was unsaid. And walk on, my friend—those who recognize warmth will not need to be persuaded.
