No matter whom you blame for the suffering, there’s one thing upon which nearly everyone agrees: Gazans are living in hell.

So why can’t they leave and go somewhere—anywhere—livable, even temporarily?

Some call that prospect an attempt to stamp out the Palestinian cause. But Christians who undertake humanitarian missions into Gaza tell me that an increasing number of Palestinians are more focused on survival than politics and want to leave, if only temporarily.

The conditions make that understandable.

UNICEF estimates that nearly 90% of Gaza’s water and sanitation infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.That will take time to repair. For now, 75% of residents depend on trucked-in water simply to have enough to drink.

The electricity grid has been down since October 2023. That doesn’t just affect households. The blackout also matters enormously for water: pumps, wells, sewage stations and desalination plants all require energy to function.

None of this is a quick fix.

On Monday, roughly 150 Palestinians from Gaza with dual citizenship packed up their families and left the Strip through Kerem Shalom for other countries.

The Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories, or COGAT, which serves as the interface between the Israeli government and military and the Palestinian population, Palestinian Authority, foreign governments, UN and aid organizations, reports that more than 6,000 people have left Gaza since February.

COGAT also reports that, according to a recent survey, 80% of respondents said they would like to move with their families to a third country.

Whatever the precise number—and with Gaza’s population at roughly 2.1 million—it seems clear that far more than 6,000 people want to leave.

So what is stopping a mother with starving children from doing so?

In April 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II issued a joint statement declaring that the “catastrophic humanitarian suffering must end now.”

More than two years later, those three countries illustrate the central paradox of the international response: governments say they deplore the suffering of Gaza’s civilians but remain deeply reluctant to offer a safe haven that would put the suffering to an end.

For most Gazans, there is no ordinary process resembling what refugees elsewhere might imagine: apply to a country, receive permission, go to an airport and leave.

Instead, the ability to get out depends heavily on why a person qualifies, which country has agreed to receive them, whether that country will actually help arrange their departure, and whether the authorities controlling the relevant crossings approve their exit.

The experience varies dramatically by receiving country—and so does the political message from its leaders.

The Medical Route: Thousands Can Leave—If They Qualify

Several countries have demonstrated that Palestinians can be moved out of Gaza when governments agree to receive them.

But those pathways overwhelmingly serve people who fit specific humanitarian categories—especially the seriously ill.

Egypt has received more medical evacuees from Gaza than any other country. As of September 2025, approximately 3,995 Gaza patients had been transferred to Egypt through WHO-supported evacuations.

Egypt’s leaders have nevertheless drawn a sharp distinction between humanitarian treatment and relocation.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has repeatedly rejected proposals that would move Palestinians from Gaza into Egypt, warning that such a step would amount to the liquidation of the Palestinian cause and threaten Egyptian national security.

Egyptian officials have said Palestinians should be helped in Gaza or allowed to return rather than permanently transferred into Sinai.

Even medical evacuation depends on whether a functioning route out of Gaza exists.

When the Rafah crossing closed in May 2024, evacuations slowed dramatically. When WHO-supported medical evacuations through Rafah resumed on February 2, 2026, only five patients and seven companions crossed in the first operation.

Other countries have created similar medical pathways.

By September 2025, approximately 1,450 Gaza patients had been transferred to the United Arab Emirates, 970 to Qatar and 437 to Turkey through WHO-supported evacuations.

Those are real evacuations, not merely promises. They demonstrate that receiving countries, hospitals and international organizations can coordinate to move substantial numbers of Palestinians out of Gaza.

But they also reveal the limitation of the existing system.

A seriously ill Gazan may have a route out. A physician can identify a condition requiring treatment unavailable locally; the case can move through the Palestinian medical-referral system and WHO coordination; a receiving country can accept the patient; security and exit approvals can be obtained; and transportation can be arranged.

For an otherwise healthy family that simply concludes that remaining in Gaza has become intolerable, there is no equivalent system.

Jordan: Temporary Evacuation Without Permanent Resettlement

Jordan offers a more revealing model because it demonstrates that opposition to permanent Palestinian displacement does not necessarily prevent a country from organizing large-scale temporary evacuation.

King Abdullah II announced that Jordan would take 2,000 sick children from Gaza for treatment.

At the same time, the king has repeatedly rejected proposals to transfer Palestinians permanently from Gaza or the West Bank into Jordan, warning that displacement could threaten regional stability and undermine the possibility of a Palestinian state.

Those positions are not necessarily contradictory.

Jordan has effectively drawn a distinction between permanent displacement and temporary humanitarian refuge.

It subsequently established a medical corridor that moved patients and accompanying family members out of Gaza. WHO was still using that corridor in August 2025, when it evacuated another 15 critically ill children to Jordan along with 42 companions.

Jordan therefore demonstrates an important principle:

A government does not have to support permanently removing Palestinians from Gaza in order to offer them temporary refuge.

It can instead say: These people need to get out now. We will receive them, treat them and preserve their ability to return home later.

That model potentially offers a way around one of the biggest political objections to broader evacuation.

Italy: From a Visa to an Actual Way Out

Italy offers perhaps the clearest example of how a country can turn willingness to receive Palestinians into an actual route out of Gaza.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani have repeatedly pledged humanitarian assistance and medical treatment to Palestinians. Italy has accepted medical patients and accompanying relatives through coordinated humanitarian evacuations.

But it went further by creating university corridors for Palestinian students.

By May 2026, Italy reported that 229 Palestinian students had been evacuated from Gaza since September 2025.

The mechanics matter.

Students did not merely receive Italian visas and then get told to find their own way to Rome.

In one operation, students left Gaza through Kerem Shalom, traveled onward to the Allenby crossing, entered Jordan, stayed temporarily in Amman and then flew to Italy.

Italian embassies and consular officials coordinated with Israeli and Jordanian authorities.

Italy continued the program in June 2026, moving another group through Kerem Shalom, Allenby and Amman before their onward journey to Italy.

That is the difference between issuing a visa and creating an evacuation route.

Italy effectively connected all the pieces:

university acceptance → visa → exit permission → border crossing → transit country → flight → arrival in Italy

That model could theoretically be replicated for far more than university students.

Italy demonstrated that the obstacle is not necessarily the physical impossibility of moving civilians from Gaza to another country.

When governments decide that a particular group should leave—and cooperate to make it happen—they can construct the route.

France: Willing to Receive, but Through Narrow Channels

France has also received Palestinians through medical evacuations and other specially authorized departures.

President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly said that France stands with the Palestinian people and will continue providing humanitarian assistance, including medical care.

The principal pathways have included seriously ill or injured patients, accompanying relatives, French nationals and dependants, people with certain connections to French institutions and some family-reunification cases.

France has therefore demonstrated a willingness to receive Palestinians. But it has not established a general program under which an ordinary Gaza resident can apply simply because remaining in Gaza has become dangerous or unbearable.

Britain: Patients and Students Have Routes

Britain initially relied heavily on existing immigration and consular categories.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said Britain has a moral responsibility to help Palestinians affected by the war. His government has announced medical evacuations for seriously ill children, assistance for scholarship students and continued humanitarian aid while opposing the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.

It later moved toward organized evacuation.

In August 2025, the British government announced that seriously ill and injured Gaza children accepted for specialist NHS treatment would be evacuated with immediate family members, working with WHO and traveling through a third country.

The government also helped Palestinian students holding scholarships leave Gaza and reach British universities.

Those programs have continued. In June 2026, Britain announced additional medical evacuations for critically ill children and further assistance for Gaza students taking up British university scholarships.

But Britain still has not established a general humanitarian visa available to Gaza residents simply seeking safety.

Canada: A Destination Without Travel Plans

Canada tried something substantially broader.

The government established a special temporary-resident program for extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Unlike medical evacuations, this was an immigration application that qualifying families could initiate.

Canada eventually accepted 5,000 applications before closing the program to new applications in March 2025.

That sounds much more like the sort of pathway Gazans seeking safety might need.

But Canada’s experience demonstrated why immigration permission alone does not solve the Gaza problem. The government offered nothing to help applicants get out of Gaza and to Canada. 970 people found a day to get there anyway. The other visa holders remain trapped in Gaza.

New Zealand: Identifying the Problem

New Zealand reached much the same conclusion—and used it as a reason not to establish a special Gaza visa.

The government prioritized Palestinian visa applications and approved applications from Palestinians with connections to New Zealand.

But Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford opposed creating a special Gaza visa that could raise expectations without providing recipients a way to leave.

Stanford told Parliament that some Palestinians had already received visas but remained unable to exit Gaza.

The Missing Category: Gazans Who Simply Want to Leave for Better Conditions

There is one group that almost every existing program leaves out.

A Palestinian may not have cancer.

She may not have a Canadian brother.

He may not hold a scholarship to an Italian university.

The family may have no foreign passport.

They may simply look at destroyed neighborhoods, damaged infrastructure, an uncertain food supply, limited medical care and an unpredictable future and decide:

We want to leave.

For that family, the international system offers remarkably few options.

There are legitimate concerns surrounding any proposal for large-scale Palestinian departure from Gaza. Arab governments and Palestinian leaders fear that supposedly temporary evacuation could become permanent displacement. Palestinians have a long historical memory of displacement followed by an inability to return. Any serious program would therefore need to be voluntary and constructed so that those who wished to return could retain that right.

But opposing forced displacement does not logically require preventing voluntary departure.

Jordan has already demonstrated that temporary evacuation and opposition to permanent resettlement can coexist.

Italy has demonstrated that a receiving government can coordinate the entire journey rather than merely issuing a visa.

Put those lessons together, and the unresolved question becomes increasingly difficult to avoid.

World leaders have spent years describing the suffering of Palestinian civilians in extraordinary terms. Governments have provided food, medicine, money and medical evacuations. They have demanded more humanitarian access. They have condemned the destruction and warned repeatedly about the conditions in which Gaza’s civilians are living.

Yet for an ordinary Palestinian family that listens to those warnings, looks at those conditions and concludes that it would rather live somewhere else—whether for a year, five years or permanently—the international system offers remarkably few legal avenues.

The question is no longer whether moving civilians out of Gaza is technically possible.

We know that it is.

The question is whether governments that say Palestinians are enduring intolerable suffering are willing to construct a voluntary system large enough—and broad enough—to allow substantially more of those Palestinians who want to leave to actually do so.

In the darkness before dawn, the war widened.

U.S. Central Command has confirmed that American forces completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran at approximately 5:30 a.m. local time, unleashing one of the largest single bombardments of the conflict against dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets stretching from the Persian Gulf coast to the mountains of the north.

CENTCOM says the strikes hit military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities — a direct response, it says, to Iranian missile attacks on U.S. personnel in the region. Within hours, Iran answered with a threat of its own: that it would “punish the aggressor today.”

This is no longer a series of exchanges. It is a war escalating by the hour.

What the U.S. has confirmed

In its official release, CENTCOM stated that U.S. forces “struck dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets” and framed the operation as retaliation for Iranian missile fire on American forces in the region. Major international outlets have corroborated the scale of the assault, with one source describing this bombardment as roughly twice the size of the previous round.

Confirmed and officially acknowledged impact points already include:

• Qeshm Island, where Iranian officials confirm a residential building was struck.

• Bandar Abbas, the strategic Gulf port, where explosions were heard.

• Abadan, where a deputy security minister acknowledged U.S. targeting of “some locations.”

• Kish Island, where multiple explosions were reported.

Iran’s response was immediate and defiant. The IRGC declared: “As long as Washington’s threats continue, Tehran’s resistance will also continue.”

From inside Iran: the frontline picture

A flood of reports is pouring out of Iran from journalists, residents, and opposition sources on the ground. These accounts are still being verified — but together they paint a picture of a country under sustained, nationwide bombardment.

Bushehr. Reports from inside Iran describe Bushehr Airport as completely out of service, with images circulating that show extensive damage to the terminal and the wreckage of an Airbus A319 (registration EP-IEP) previously destroyed in March. A government official is reported to have stated the airport has been destroyed and is no longer usable.

Ahvaz (Khuzestan Province). Multiple high-priority targets were reportedly struck, including the Intelligence Department building, the 92nd Armored Division headquarters, and the IRGC Intelligence center in the Golestan district. Residents describe explosions so intense that windows shattered across the city:

Casualty figures are still coming in and are not yet confirmed: sources inside Iran report a father, mother, and a 2-year-old child killed with two other children injured, while official Iranian channels have so far described people trapped under rubble and others hospitalized. Opposition sources suggest the building may have hosted a high-level regime meeting. Residents, witnesses say, took to the streets as the strikes intensified:

Tabriz. The Al-Zahra-19 missile base in the north of the city was reportedly “wiped off the map” following a strike at 1:20 a.m.

Farashband (Fars Province). An empty sports hall was reportedly hit, causing structural damage but — by these accounts — no casualties.

Bandar Abbas. U.S. forces reportedly targeted a missile launch site used to fire anti-ship cruise missiles toward the Strait of Hormuz.

Caspian Sea. Drone attacks reportedly targeted two oil tankers — one Marshall Islands–flagged, one Isle of Man–flagged — during loading operations, opening a northern front far from the Gulf.

Iranshahr. Gunmen reportedly attacked a security checkpoint, killing one police officer identified as Sergeant Meisam Karami — a sign of the internal unrest rippling alongside the strikes.

What is confirmed: The United States has carried out a major, CENTCOM-acknowledged wave of strikes on dozens of IRGC targets across Iran. Iran has vowed to retaliate today. The war is widening.

Four fronts. One regime. The question in Washington and the Gulf is no longer whether Tehran can win any of these fights. It’s how long it can keep fighting all of them at once.

The front at home: gallows in Isfahan

The most brutal front this week wasn’t a battlefield. It was a public square. Before dawn on Tuesday, July 28, Iran hanged two men in Shahid Alikhani Square in Isfahan’s Malekshahr district: Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadiand Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani. Their crime, according to the state: killing four Basij militia members and torching property during protests on January 8, 2026.

They are the third and fourth to die from one case — twelve people condemned to death in a single closed hearing. Two were hanged on July 19. At least eight more are waiting, according to the United Nations. UN experts, led by special rapporteur Mai Sato, call the whole thing a sham: a mass sentencing with no individual findings of guilt, confessions aired on state TV before the trials even began. The UN now ties more than two dozen executions to the January unrest.

Tehran calls it qisas — lawful retribution — and has pushed out graphic footage to prove the point. Opposition channels call it terror by timetable: pre-dawn hangings meant to frighten a restive city into silence. They say mourners near the square clashed with security forces overnight.

The economic front: Abqaiq burns again

Fifteen hundred kilometers south, Iran’s most capable proxy did the hitting. The Yemeni Houthis claimed a drone strike on Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq facility — one of the largest oil processing complexes on earth, with a historic capacity near seven million barrels a day. Satellite imagery from July 27 showed the plant ablaze. Aramco suspended operations and began emergency gas flaring. The Houthis, calling it payback for Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace, said they hit the East–West pipeline to the Red Sea too.

Read the fine print: this was not a direct Iranian strike. But it was Iran’s playbook — squeeze the world’s oil supply through the axis Tehran arms and directs, right when the regime is bleeding everywhere else. The last time Abqaiq was hit, in 2019, it knocked out five percent of global supply overnight. Markets remember.

The northern gambit: missiles toward Ukraine

Then there’s the wildest front of all. Ukrainian and Iranian monitoring channels are warning that Tehran could fire up to three ballistic missiles at Ukraine within days. The Ukrainian outlet Defense Express spells out the arsenal that could do it — the Ghadr, Emad, and Sejjil at roughly 2,000 km, the Khorramshahr farther still — all of it able to reach anywhere in Ukraine from Iranian soil. Kyiv’s Patriot batteries, it warns, would struggle to stop them without THAAD or Arrow.

For now, this is a threat, not an event. No launch has been confirmed, and the July 28–29 window comes from monitoring channels, not officials. But that the threat is even credible — Iran reaching straight into a European war it already feeds with drones — tells you how far this regime will stretch to look strong.

The nuclear front: the mountain the US is threatening to hit

And then the mountain. Pickaxe Mountain — Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La — is a fortress under construction beside the Natanz enrichment site, 225 km south of Tehran. Buried 80 to 100 meters down, never once inspected by the UN’s nuclear watchdog, it is exactly the kind of target that starts wars. President Trump isn’t being subtle about it: the US will hit “that area … probably pretty soon,” he says, “and there’s not a thing they can do about it.”

According to reporting by the New York Post and Wall Street Journal, Prime Minister Netanyahu is preparing to present Trump with fresh intelligence alleging that Iran has recently moved centrifuges into the complex — a first since construction began in 2020 — and has begun rebuilding its missile and drone programs while negotiating in bad faith. Crucially, these allegations have not been independently verified, Iran has not responded, and Trump himself previously dismissed some Pickaxe Mountain claims.

How long can one regime fight everywhere?

Stack it up and the strain is staggering: an oil economy under fire, a nuclear program in an American gunsight, a population being terrorized into silence, and proxies flung from Yemen to the edge of a European war. Few governments face any one of these in a given year. Iran is facing all four in a single week.

To those betting on collapse, the gallows are the tell. Confident regimes don’t hang their citizens before dawn to make a point. Add the economic bleeding, an “axis of resistance” worn down by two years of war, and a public that keeps pouring into the streets no matter the cost — and the cracks look real.

But bet against the Islamic Republic’s survival and you join a long line of people who’ve been wrong. It has outlasted war, sanctions, uprising, and assassination for more than four decades, and crackdowns like this one have usually bought it time, not toppled it. What’s actually new isn’t any single crisis. It’s the simultaneity — the regime forced to spend money, attention, and legitimacy in every direction at once.

Does that overstretch finally break Tehran, or does it absorb this the way it’s absorbed everything else? Nobody honestly knows. What’s certain is that the next few days — a threatened US strike, a possible missile launch, more names on the execution list — will test a government fighting on every front it has, all at the same time.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) is reportedly preparing to resume a full maritime blockade on all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET on July 14, marking a dramatic escalation in the conflict between the United States and Iran.

Meanwhile, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has ground to a near standstill as regional tensions intensify. MarineTraffic data reportedly showed that only two vessels—the oil and chemical tankers Seafaith and Niki—transited the strategic waterway during the previous 24 hours, highlighting the growing disruption to one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accused the United States of encouraging commercial vessels to disable their Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking transponders and use unauthorized routes to bypass Iranian maritime security procedures. Iranian officials warned that any vessel entering designated minefields or ignoring navigation instructions would face military action.

Those warnings were followed by cruise missile strikes on two United Arab Emirates-owned Very Large Crude Carriers, the MT Mombasa and MT Al Bahiya, as they transited the southern shipping corridor near Limah, Oman. The IRGC claimed responsibility, alleging the vessels ignored repeated warnings and deliberately disabled their navigation systems.

The strike on the MT Mombasa reportedly killed one Indian crew member and injured eight others, including six Indian nationals and two Ukrainians. India summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador to issue a formal protest, while the United Arab Emirates condemned the attack as piracy. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported a missile strike against a tanker operating near Limah and urged all vessels in the area to exercise extreme caution.

OPERATION NASR 2 EXPANDS THE WAR

The maritime crisis unfolded alongside a major regional military offensive as Iran launched the second phase of Operation Nasr 2—or “Victory 2.”

The IRGC fired ballistic missiles, including the Fattah (”Conqueror”), Kheibar Shekan (”Breaker of Khaybar”), Fateh-110 (”Conqueror-110”), and Zulfiqar missile systems, toward U.S. military facilities across the Middle East.

Iranian officials claimed the strikes targeted the Juffair Naval Base in Bahrain, including weapons depots, satellite communications facilities, and military support infrastructure. Bahraini authorities said several incoming threats were intercepted before impact.

Additional ballistic missiles targeted a U.S.-occupied airbase in Jordan. Jordan’s military reported intercepting and destroying four Iranian missiles inside its airspace before they reached their targets.

Iranian naval forces also launched dozens of anti-ship cruise missiles toward U.S. naval vessels operating inside the Strait of Hormuz, describing the attack as retaliation for earlier American strikes against Iranian coastal military positions.

Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command carried out a five-hour strike campaign against military and strategic infrastructure across Bushehr, Chabahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa Island, Bandar Abbas, Kish Island, Qeshm Island, Saravan,and Omidiyeh County.

The operation reportedly included three waves of strikes against Bushehr and marked the first operational use of Corsair unmanned surface vessels, which targeted submarine repair facilities and naval assets at Iran’s main naval base in Bandar Abbas.

President Donald Trump also warned that deeply buried Iranian nuclear facilities, including sites reportedly located beneath “Axe Mountain,” could become future U.S. targets.

IRAN’S LEADERSHIP FACES MAXIMUM PRESSURE

The conflict has also intensified political instability inside Iran.

Reports from inside and outside Iran claim hundreds of senior Iranian military commanders have been killed during the 40-day conflict. President Trump stated that the first and second tiers of Iran’s military leadership had been eliminated, leaving third-tier commanders to direct ongoing operations.

Iran’s parliament convened its first emergency overnight session in 146 days, approving legislation designed to strengthen long-term security over the Strait of Hormuz while authorizing remote parliamentary sessions during national emergencies.

Political tensions continue to grow as prominent figures were removed from key parliamentary security positions. Succession discussions have reportedly centered on Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khomeini, and Saeed Jalili, while hardline factions accused senior officials of betraying the country.

Separate reports also claimed former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been detained over alleged ties to Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, although those reports were later publicly denied. Ahmadinejad was last seen at the Ayatollah’s state funeral surrounded by security and wearing a mask low over his face and chin.

BLACKOUTS SPREAD ACROSS IRAN

Military strikes have also damaged civilian infrastructure across Iran.

Officials acknowledged attacks on multiple power plants that triggered widespread electricity outages in Tehran after the national power grid reportedly lost approximately 4,200 megawatts of generating capacity.

Authorities estimated damage at more than 2,000 locations across the electrical grid, with financial losses reported at roughly $670 million U.S. dollars based on current exchange estimates.

Additional strikes reportedly killed three relatives of a park ranger near Haji Abad, injured four people in Omidiyeh County, and hit military facilities in Kish Island, Chabahar, Konarak, and Saravan.

Officials said explosions reported in Isfahan resulted from the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance left behind after earlier strikes.

GLOBAL OIL MARKETS REMAIN ON EDGE

The situation has intensified following reports on Telegram that an Iraqi national named Muhammad Baqir Al-Saadi, who runs with a terrorist group supported by the IRGC, is leading a revenge plot targeting Ivanka Trump.

The motive reportedly stems from the 2020 killing of IRGC Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.

Al-Saadi vowed to end her life and had obtained a blueprint of her home on the exclusive Indian Creek Island near Miami Beach.

The 32-year-old Al-Saadi is a prominent figure in Iraqi and Iranian terror circles and posted on Telegram the location of Ms. Trump’s $24 million house which she shares with her husband, and three children.

According to the DOJ, Al-Saadi was arrested in Turkey and charged with 18 attacks and attempted attacks across Europe and the US.

Kharg earned a reputation as one of the best locations in the Gulf for experienced maritime pilots guiding ships into Basra’s difficult waterways.

The island also briefly became an unexpected religious center.

In 1757, a church was built there, and a Carmelite priest ministered to what was reportedly the largest Catholic community in Persia at the time. Even the Bishop of Isfahan temporarily relocated to Kharg.

But colonial control remained unstable.

Local Arab rulers and Persian power brokers repeatedly challenged European influence. In 1766, Mir Muhanna, the governor of Bandar Rig, expelled the Dutch permanently after relations with local populations deteriorated.

British Occupation and the Modern Persian Gulf

In the 19th century, Kharg again became entangled once again in imperial rivalry.

British forces briefly occupied the island in 1837 during efforts to influence the Siege of Herat, part of the broader “Great Game” competition between Britain and Persia over regional influence.

The British returned during the Anglo-Persian War of 1856, occupying the island once more before eventually withdrawing.

By the early 20th century, Kharg remained sparsely populated and largely peripheral to global affairs — until oil transformed everything.

The Oil Revolution

Under Reza Shah Pahlavi, the island was initially used as a remote place of exile for political dissidents, limiting broader development.

That changed dramatically in the 1950s.

In 1956, Iran began constructing massive oil storage reservoirs on Kharg connected to mainland oil fields through extensive pipeline systems.

By 1960, the first major terminal capable of loading 100,000-ton tankers had been inaugurated.

Additional submarine pipelines and pumping systems rapidly expanded capacity throughout the 1960s. By 1965, Kharg had become the largest oil shipment terminal in the world.

Iranian writer Jalal Al-e-Ahmad visited the island during this transformation and famously called it:

“The orphan pearl of the Persian Gulf.”

The phrase captured both the island’s isolation and its growing strategic importance.

In 1969, the Shah’s government partnered with American oil giant Amoco and the National Iranian Oil Company to develop Kharg into the centerpiece of Iran’s energy export infrastructure.

By the 1970s, the island hosted multiple terminals, chemical facilities, and some of the largest offshore loading infrastructure on Earth.

Revolution, War, and Militarization

The 1979 Iranian Revolution fundamentally changed Kharg’s role.

Amoco’s assets were nationalized, and the island became increasingly militarized under the protection of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, Iraqi aircraft repeatedly bombed Kharg’s oil facilities in an attempt to cripple Iran’s economy.

The attacks caused severe damage and disrupted exports for years, proving that the island’s enormous strategic value also made it extraordinarily vulnerable.

Yet Iran rebuilt.

Despite sanctions, isolation, and repeated conflict, Tehran expanded Kharg’s infrastructure over subsequent decades, determined to preserve the island as the backbone of its oil economy.

Kharg Today

In 2025 and early 2026, Iran, through Kharg, exported around 1.5 million barrels of oil per day to China. Other Iran ports, and other customer countries show much smaller numbers. In February, Iran increased its oil export to 3 times normal rate, and reduced oil storage. Following the start of the 2026 Iran war on February 28, satellite imagery revealed that Iran had begun reducing oil storage there since early February, probably in anticipation of an attack. The facility had 18 million barrels (58% full), when nine of the oil tanks were estimated to be full by March 7th, compared to mid-January. But instead of filling those tanks to capacity, the regime began dumping oil in the ocean, slowing production, and taking ancient, rusty tankers out of retirement, and using them as floating storage.

In March 2026, it was reported that Israel was considering bombing the island, while the US was favoring seizing it. On March 13, the US bombed military installations on the island. Around 90 military targets were struck, while oil infrastructure on the island was left intact. On April 7, 2026, the US military once again struck military targets on Kharg Island, and shortly thereafter imposed a blockade in the region.

Now Kharg stands as the most strategically important island in the Middle East — an ancient crossroads transformed into a modern geopolitical fortress. A fact that President Trump has long understood.

BREAKING NEWS 24/7

Three supertankers carrying a combined six million barrels of crude oil from Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels followed transit corridors officially approved by Iranian authorities after a two-month delay.

The IRGC-linked Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) has formally designated six maritime corridors. Under this “Iranian Order,” all maritime traffic must coordinate with Iranian authorities for transit. Tankers are required to obtain IRGC clearance and pay transit fees exceeding $150,000.

The United Arab Emirates is accelerating plans to raise crude export capacity from Fujairah to as much as 4 mn b/d by 2027, as Abu Dhabi seeks to further reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.

When the new 48-inch, 1.5 mn b/d route is complete, combined pipeline capacity to Fujairah will reach around 3.3 mn b/d, and crude export capacity from the port could rise to as much as 4 mn b/d when accounting for storage and terminal infrastructure, sources said.

Other nations aren’t doing as well--at least fourteen Indian commercial vessels are currently reported stranded within the Strait of Hormuz, according to Indian government officials.

The continued disruption in the Strait has contributed to a 50% increase in U.S. gasoline prices since the conflict began. European Union nations are also facing a severe fertilizer crisis, with nearly one-third of the global supply disrupted, forcing a shift toward alternative organic solutions.

In the Gulf of Oman, U.S. CENTCOM forces seized the Iranian-flagged tanker M/T Celestial Sea, forcing it to change course. Separately, U.S. Marines reportedly boarded an Iranian tanker in the Gulf of Oman before abandoning the vessel. This as the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on 19 Iran-linked tankers.

Iran was the one country in the region that managed to keep moving oil during the first few months of the war because its own vessels were able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, while the country menaced shipments of other nations.

A US blockade that began on April 13 has changed that, preventing the vast majority of Tehran’s oil from reaching global markets too and hindering the flow of tankers to collect the nation’s barrels.

In response, Iran has cut production, spilled oil into the Northern Persian Gulf, and recommissioned retired and rusty tankers to store what cannot be exported.

Meanwhile, TankerTrackers reports that the U.S.-sanctioned Russian-flagged handymax tanker PEGASUS (IMO 9276028) continues to move in and out of the U.S. blockade perimeter, just outside the site. Multiple satellite images reportedly confirm that this is not an AIS spoof.

State-aligned media, including the Kayhan newspaper, has explicitly threatened that if Iran’s energy infrastructure is targeted, it will retaliate by attacking the energy and economic infrastructure of all countries in the region.

Despite the military posturing, diplomatic channels remain active. A special Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran to meet with the Iranian Foreign Minister in an effort to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States. Additionally, Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is expected to visit Tehran to finalize a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran.

The essential issue remains unresolved: Ayatollah Khamenei has also issued a critical directive prohibiting the removal of non-weapons-grade enriched uranium (60%) from Iranian territory, further hardening Tehran’s stance against U.S. negotiation demands.

Cannes has always been the absolute height of celebrity. Real, old-world glamor — movie stars and cigarettes and French women who look both underfed and judgmental at the same time.

People saying “storytelling” as if they personally invented stories.

Yes. Everyone is beautiful in a very expensive, highly hydrated, probably-IV-drip way.

The gowns are everywhere. Women float around in dresses designed to imply they are on their way to an awards ceremony even at 6am. Men vibe recently divorced yacht consultant with a crypto side hustle.

And somehow none of that matters.

Because after about twelve minutes at Cannes, you realize beauty is nice, money is useful, but access is everything.

Access is God.

And God wears a lanyard. With a badge dangling from the end. That has a barcode. And that barcode unlocks your exact level of status.

Mine was Platinum. And that can elicit gasps, I am so proud to tell you. I paired my badge with a very French outfit: blue and white striped Finn popover from Tuckernuck, wide-legged high-waisted cropped pants, flats, linen Ralph Lauren scarf color coordinated with the aforementioned badge.

Okay, mildly ridiculous and definitely trying too hard but, A for effort?

My husband did much better.

The most amazing talent of the French is cutting you right back down to size the second you start feeling yourself and drift into a main character spiral.

More than once, someone high on the intoxicating power that comes with an electronic scanner put us right back in our box because we were too late, too stupid, too happy, and/or too American to be tolerated, with or without my (previously) magical badge.

See the barely noticeable head behind us on the red carpet? He’s kicking our asses to the curb at the premiere of FATHERLAND.

Every time I see that film scroll by on Netflix, I will think of his disdain wistfully and wonder what could have been. (His hand is raised because he’s about to shove me in the most politely French way possible.)

That’s the most special thing about Cannes. It gives you at least one deeply humiliating European interaction that follows you home forever.

The funniest part is watching people hoard and flex the temporary authority that comes from wielding a badge scanner.

A man who spent all afternoon looking spiritually concussed would suddenly straighten his posture because a lanyard granted him the right to deny entry and publicly humble another human being.

Speaking of which… we did see GENTLE MONSTER, and while I didn’t expect Barney, I also wasn’t prepared for a whole movie about child pornography. Buzzkill by Cannes. (It was good by the way, though a bit hard to hear through the cacophony of snores surrounding us. A 3pm showing is simply too early for this crowd.)

But it’s not all films. In between reels, we workshop and panel.

There were many sessions trying to address THE PROBLEM: “a movie costs this to make” (speaker’s hand WAY above his head) and “is worth this” (hand drops near the floor as the audience collectively dissociates), “especially in the age of YouTube.”

34 sessions later though, I’m relatively sure we had not unearthed any remedy other than “spend less,” which is an ironic and deeply unwelcome message in Cannes, where Bezos-core excess is blueprint and quiet luxury is safely out of earshot.

Going on day five, everybody is simultaneously overstimulated and undernourished. The rosé flows like a municipal utility while people survive on nicotine, electrolytes, and two strategic almonds until it’s time to rush Bobo’s for loud laughter and frites and more Whispering Angel, and then it’s two, three, maybe four more hours at the Members’ Club comparing notes on locations with the best subsidies and asking yourself what skill of yours you can barter for someone else’s instead of attending another panel that still somehow cannot solve the “money is everywhere except your production budget” problem.

At some point you blink and notice that the French Riviera itself is calmly watching all this with the detached expression of a cat observing a Roomba repeatedly crash into furniture.

I will say, the best attended session — the one worth all the badge shaming in the world — was Crafting Your Oscar Campaign from a Foreign Language Documentary Team that Achieved the Unthinkable.

The whole audience hung on every word, bright-eyed and alert like they hadn’t consumed one glass of Minuty all week. (My notes are Harvard-level and available to the right buyer; hit my DMs.)

Money problem solved.

On the way out of the country, in the name of psychological reentry, we were treated to The Full Monty French Experience: airport security dumps one of my tenuously bursting bags onto the table in front of everyone I have ever met to meticulously measure every last travel-sized liquid or paste (of course I’m naughty/overweight in every sense), then forces me to make Sophie’s Choice and abandon a 0.28oz bottle of Visine, a travel-sized deodorant, and a tiny bottle of liquid bandage.

So now I was fully vulnerable to being blinded by allergies, breaking into a stress sweat, and getting a papercut that would inevitably become septic.

Meanwhile, in my other bag — which they also “searched” — I had a 9oz tube of L’Occitane hand cream and two more deodorants (in case I needed to share… France!)

Those three items did not count somehow.

Then we had nine hours without wifi (thanks United!) to reflect on our failures (all rooted in not being French) before being greeted at US Customs by President Trump’s mugshot.

FATHERLAND indeed.

With a sigh of relief, I say every time: “I will never return to Cannes.”

Until twelve months later when I give my husband that look that says: I got your white dinner jacket cleaned, so go pack your bag. We’ve got a new film to promote.

ACCORDING TO TANKER TRACKERS (aka the BEST source in the biz):

To our best knowledge, Iran hasn’t successfully exported* any crude oil by sea over the past 28 days. Some refined products managed to escape because US OFAC did not slap sanctions on those tankers.

In addition, Kharg Island hasn’t loaded any tankers since 2026-05-06 as a result of the oil leak which Tehran denied taking place.

That said, the maritime picture remains complicated.

There are still large numbers of cargo-empty tankers positioned both inside and outside the blockade perimeter. In addition, numerous cargo-laden tankers remain grouped together not far from Pakistan, raising questions about potential rerouting operations, offshore transfers, or waiting strategies amid escalating uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Russia and Iran are quietly constructing an alternative trade corridor through the Caspian Sea aimed at transporting military components and strategic goods while circumventing international oversight and maritime pressure points.

Iran, for its part, continues to assert absolute control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials have declared full combat readiness in response to what Tehran describes as external pressure. An Iranian Army spokesperson stated that no US weapons will be permitted to enter regional military bases through the Strait.

Diplomatic pressure is building rapidly, though Iran seems immune. A total of 112 countries have reportedly joined a US-Gulf draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, the US State Department says there is now a preliminary agreement with Chinese officials that no nation should be permitted to collect shipping tolls within the waterway.

Separately, delegations from Iran and Oman recently held meetings to discuss the legal and technical arrangements governing vessel passage through the Strait, with both sides asserting sovereign rights connected to the waterway.

However, the Prime Minister of Qatar publicly warned Tehran against using the Strait to “extort” the oil-producing monarchies of the Persian Gulf.

Adding another layer of uncertainty, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Pardis — on the border of Tehran and Mazandaran provinces — at approximately 11:10 PM on May 12, 2026.

In an attempt to shift the focus: President Trump is spending today highlighting foreign policy and economic issues as he travels to Beijing for meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The trip is being closely watched because the administration is trying to ease tensions over trade, technology restrictions, and global security concerns. Meetings today and over the next several days are expected to cover tariffs, artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, Taiwan, and instability in the Middle East. Reports also say major American business and technology executives are traveling with the delegation as both countries look for possible economic agreements.

The visit comes at a difficult time economically for the President: April data showed consumer prices rising 3.8% versus a year ago, while monthly inflation climbed 0.6%. Gasoline and energy prices were among the largest contributors, along with housing, food, and airline fares. Economists say the recent conflict involving Iran and concerns about oil supply disruptions have added pressure to fuel prices, which is now affecting transportation and consumer costs across the economy.

The security situation in Iran and across the Persian Gulf sharply deteriorated overnight following a series of military exchanges between Iranian forces, the United States, and UAE, raising fears of a broader regional war despite official claims that a ceasefire technically remains in effect.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Iranian forces launched what American officials described as an “unprovoked” multi-domain assault against three U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers operating in the region. The targeted vessels were the USS Truxtun (DDG-103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115), and USS Mason (DDG-87).

CENTCOM stated that the attack involved multiple ballistic and cruise missiles, kamikaze drones, and swarms of fast-attack boats operated by the IRGC Navy. U.S. military officials claimed all three destroyers successfully defended themselves using layered air and missile defense systems before retaliatory operations were authorized.

Retaliatory Strikes Across Southern Iran

In response, the United States carried out what it described as “defensive and retaliatory precision strikes” targeting Iranian military infrastructure believed to be directly connected to the assault.

Several strategic locations in southern Iran were hit during the operation:

• Airstrikes targeted launch platforms and port infrastructure in Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Port.

• In Minab, strikes reportedly hit the Bandar Kargan naval checkpoint and a nearby naval base.

• Multiple explosions were reported in Sirik, Hormozgan Province, particularly near the Taheriya pier.

• Additional strikes allegedly targeted an IRGC fast-boat warehouse and logistics facilities supporting naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian authorities confirmed attacks on some facilities but claimed there were no civilian casualties. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB stated that the strikes were limited to military zones and coastal infrastructure.

CENTCOM emphasized that the operation focused exclusively on military assets and avoided civilian population centers.

UAE Hits Back

Multiple Middle Eastern media outlets and regional intelligence-linked accounts reported that the United Arab Emirates lead the strikes, allegedly providing launch support while American forces supplied aerial refueling, intelligence, and logistics coordination.

Neither Abu Dhabi nor Washington officially confirmed Emirati combat involvement at the time of reporting.

In the aftermath of the strikes, IRGC Navy commanders reportedly issued evacuation warnings to commercial and military vessels near the UAE ports of Mina Saqr and Ras Al Khaimah, signaling fears of possible retaliatory attacks against Gulf shipping infrastructure.

Air Defenses Activated Across Iran

As tensions escalated, Iranian air defense systems were activated in several major cities.

Residents in western Tehran reported hearing interceptor launches and anti-aircraft fire overnight. At least four large explosions were also reported in Isfahan and Bushehr, though the exact nature of those incidents remains unclear. Again internally, Iranian officials blamed UAE and vowed retaliation.

Iranian military officials claimed hostile aerial targets were intercepted successfully, while social media footage circulating online appeared to show active air-defense engagements over multiple provinces.

Internal Security Crisis Deepens

The external confrontation unfolded alongside growing internal instability within Iran.

ISIS officially claimed responsibility for the assassination of prominent Shia cleric Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, in what analysts describe as a major security breach and a sign of expanding insurgent activity inside the country.

The killing has intensified fears that Iran is now confronting a multi-front crisis involving:

• Direct confrontation with U.S. and allied military forces,

• Rising ISIS activity,

• Kurdish insurgent operations,

• And internal unrest fueled by economic pressure and war fears.

At the same time, the IRGC continued cross-border military operations, conducting drone strikes against the Kurdish opposition group PAK in Iraqi Kurdistan for the third consecutive night.

Iranian Government Response

Iranian military and political officials condemned the attacks, with spokespersons from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters accusing the United States and the United Arab Emirates of violating the ceasefire agreement.

Official statements described the strikes as acts of aggression committed by “American terrorists” and “pirates,” while promising that Iranian retaliation would continue if attacks persisted.

The IRGC has reportedly remained on maximum alert status across naval, missile, and air-defense divisions.

Ceasefire Confusion and Diplomatic Uncertainty

Despite the escalation, conflicting narratives emerged regarding the status of the ceasefire.

Israeli media outlets reported that the ceasefire had effectively collapsed following the overnight exchanges. However, some U.S. and Israeli officials characterized the confrontation as a “limited exchange of fire” that may already be winding down.

President Donald Trump referred to the retaliatory operation as a “love tap” and argued that the ceasefire technically remained in effect despite Iran’s accusations.

Nevertheless, the operational posture of Iranian forces and ongoing military alerts across the Gulf suggest the situation remains highly unstable, with the possibility of additional retaliation still looming.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a high-level call with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. During this call, President El-Sisi expressed Egypt's full solidarity and support for the UAE in the face of Iranian attacks, but urged MBZ to stand down and not take the bait. Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Aoun condemned the bombing that targeted the “sisterly state of the Emirates,” describing it as a serious violation of its sovereignty, security, and stability, before falling short of support for retaliation.

Commercial maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has ground to a near-total halt as security conditions rapidly deteriorate. In the early hours of May 5, 2026, the strategic waterway stood effectively empty, with hundreds of vessels diverting and clustering near Dubai and Fujairah to avoid transit through the increasingly volatile corridor.

A large-scale regional electronic interference campaign has significantly worsened the situation. Actors have deployed widespread GPS and AIS (Automatic Identification System) spoofing, disrupting navigation systems, confusing vessel positioning, and sharply increasing the risk of maritime collisions.

Amid these disruptions, a coordinated attack targeted two U.S. Navy torpedo boats during their passage through the Strait. Iranian small boats, drones, and missiles reportedly carried out the assault, marking a sharp escalation in direct maritime hostilities.

At the same time, a South Korean-managed commercial vessel suffered an onboard explosion and subsequent fire while transiting the Strait. Authorities have since begun towing the damaged ship to a nearby port, where investigators will assess the cause of the incident.

The United States has intensified its military presence in response. Apache helicopters and more than 100 aircraft are actively monitoring the designated “Project Liberty” transit corridor, aiming to secure safe passage and deter further attacks.

Elsewhere in the region, the Russian Consulate in Isfahan is preparing to resume operations after sustaining damage in earlier strikes, signaling tentative steps toward restoring diplomatic functions amid ongoing instability.

Inside Iran, authorities have launched a sweeping internal crackdown in response to mounting pressure and recent losses. The judiciary has initiated a series of purges targeting individuals accused of collaborating with foreign adversaries. In Semnan province, officials have seized the assets of Mehdi Nasiri and 21 others labeled as “enemy-associated elements,” citing alleged anti-security activities during what authorities describe as the “Third Imposed War.” Security forces in Tehran have also arrested an individual accused of sharing sensitive information about military checkpoints with hostile networks.

Meanwhile, internal political tensions appear to be rising. Reports suggest that the Interim Leadership Council is struggling to maintain stability as shifting dynamics in the Strait test the country’s strategic posture.

Iran Expands Offensive Operations Across the Region

Iran has broadened its military campaign beyond the Strait, targeting critical regional infrastructure. Strikes have hit the UAE’s Fujairah oil port, a vital hub connected to the ADCOP pipeline, which serves as a key alternative route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE Ministry of Defense confirmed that it detected at least four cruise missiles launched from Iran toward its territory. The attacks caused moderate injuries to three Indian nationals working in Fujairah’s industrial zone, underscoring the widening civilian impact of the conflict.

In Israel, authorities have taken precautionary measures as tensions escalate further. Municipalities in Ashdod and Rishon Lezion have opened public shelters in anticipation of potential Iranian missile strikes following the attacks in the UAE.

BREAKING THIS MORNING:

The United States announces “Operation Project Freedom,” a humanitarian initiative intended to extract merchant ships currently stranded in the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

US warships have reportedly entered the Strait to break the IRGC naval siege. To support these transits, the US has established a reinforced security zone south of the traffic separation scheme in the Strait.

THE IRGC Navy has declared a “new Iranian regime” for the Strait, requiring all vessels to obtain passage permits from Iranian naval forces.

The IRGC has delineated a new control zone extending from south of Koh Mubarak to south of Fujairah (UAE) in the east, and from the end of Qeshm Island to Umm Al-Quwain (UAE) in the west.

Vessels crossing without explicit Iranian permission have been warned via VHF radio that they will be “targeted and destroyed.”

Transit Observations:

Long queues of vessels are currently visible at both the entrances and exits of the Strait as they wait for Iranian permits.

Despite the blockade, Iran claims the sanctioned Iranian LPG tanker XAVIA (IMO: 9052331) successfully exited the Strait after loading at Assaluyeh and was last reported near Sohar, Oman, on May 2, 2026. There remains no proof this actually happened and that it is not just Iranian propaganda.

Conversely, some captains of stranded vessels refuse to utilize the US-proposed “Project Freedom” routes, citing a lack of insurance coverage for such high-risk conditions.

New Control Area:

The IRGC Navy has established a new maritime control zone defined by two lines: a southern line between Mount Mubarak (Iran) and south Fujairah (UAE), and a western line between Qeshm Island (Iran) and Umm Al Quwain (UAE).

Accidents or Assassinations?

A senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Ali Mousavi-Hawai, was killed in Zanjan province. According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, he died in an explosion while clearing debris left behind from a previous U.S.-Israeli attack. At the same time, social media discourse has shown skepticism toward these official explanations.

In another incident, fourteen members of the IRGC (Sepah) were killed, supposedly while attempting to defuse an unexploded cluster bomb. The deaths prompted authorities to declare a city-wide shutdown to allow for funeral observances.

Meanwhile, in Isfahan, residents reported hearing a series of loud explosions. Provincial authorities stated that the blasts were the result of controlled demolitions of unexploded munitions, but most Iranians aren’t buying it.

Executions and Domestic Incidents

Elsewhere, Iranian authorities carried out the execution of two individuals, Yaqoub Karimpour and Nasser Bakrzadeh. Both were hanged on charges of spying for Israeli intelligence, identified as Mossad. The judiciary stated that the two men had provided sensitive information related to the Natanz nuclear facility.

In Yazd, a separate incident unfolded overnight when a vehicle drove into a nighttime gathering of regime supporters, killing three and wounding eight others.

Iran Demands Right to Enrich Uranium

Iran has reportedly put forward a proposal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In exchange, the proposal calls for an end to the naval blockade and recognition of Iran’s right to enrich uranium.

Donald Trump commented that Iran’s leadership appears “uncoordinated” and divided into multiple factions. At the same time, Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of CENTCOM, briefed Trump on what were described as “final blow” options, including the possibility of short, concentrated strikes on key facilities aimed at breaking the current negotiation deadlock.

Lebanon: Israeli Airstrikes Intensify

Beyond Iran, Israeli military activity has intensified in southern Lebanon. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli forces have conducted approximately 50 airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure. The strikes were directed at command centers and other military buildings.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW:

• 41 tankers carrying approximately 69 million barrels of oil are currently locked down as a result of the blockade, representing $6 billion in unrealized revenue for the Iranian leadership.

• The US Treasury issues a formal warning to shipowners, banks, and insurers that any payments linked to “safe passage” through the Strait involving Iran or the IRGC will trigger severe sanctions.

• Rival powers emerge within Iran to fill the vacuum in a “post-Khamenei system.” Mohammad Mokhber, acting as an advisor and assistant to the leadership, has taken a prominent public role, issuing warnings to the “arrogant system” (current regime).

• Iran is showcasing a new generation of “Arash” suicide drones during a large-scale public demonstrations in Tehran. Navy Commander Shahram Irani has warned that Iran will soon deploy a weapon that will “terrify” its enemies, claiming it is already positioned “right under their ear”.

• Former Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki explicitly threatens that if Iran is prevented from selling oil, US forces located in the “palaces of regional kings” (referring to Gulf monarchies) will be targeted.

• The US military is requesting high-speed hypersonic weapons (Dark Eagle) for potential deployment in the Middle East to strike Iranian targets.

• Due to the inability to export, Iran has been forced to store extracted oil in old, decommissioned tankers and is just days away from being forced to shut in production.
