Sicily isn’t merely “Italian.” Sicily is Sicily.

A Mediterranean crossroads where empires stayed, married in, and rewrote the island’s DNA. Layers of conquest and coexistence built something distinctly Sicilian.

Here are the three cultures that mattered most to the island’s historical formation:

1. Arab-Islamic (827–1091 AD)

When the Aghlabids landed at Mazara del Vallo in 827 and the Fatimids and Kalbids consolidated their grip, Sicily stopped being a backwater of Byzantium and became one of the richest, most sophisticated places in the Mediterranean. Palermo, then called Balarm, rivaled Córdoba and Cairo.

Travelers like Ibn Hawqal wrote of three hundred mosques and gardens that ran on water systems Europe wouldn’t see again for centuries.

The receipts are everywhere.

The qanat tunnels still running beneath Palermo. The qubba domes you see on Sicilian churches. Citrus, sugarcane, rice, pistachio, eggplant, spinach, melons, dates, all introduced or scaled by Arab agronomists who turned the island into a garden.

The Sicilian language carries hundreds of Arabic loanwords: zibibbo, cassata, zafferano, giuggiulena, tabbutu, taliàri. Even the word admiral comes through Sicily from the Arabic amir al-bahr.

The Vucciria and Ballarò markets in Palermo are souks.

Cassata, cannoli, granita, panelle, arancini…Arab-influenced confectionery, frozen desserts, and street foods refined in Sicilian kitchens and never given back.

If Sicily has a soul made of language, cuisine, irrigation, markets, citrus, and cultural fusion, then the Arab period may be its most concentrated layer.

2. Greek (8th century BC onward)

Before Rome was Rome, Sicily was Magna Graecia.

Greek colonists founded Syracuse, Akragas, Selinunte, Gela, and Catania.

Syracuse under Dionysius I became one of the largest cities in the ancient world. Plato visited the city, and Archimedes later called it home.

The temples at Agrigento remain among the best-preserved monuments of the ancient Greek world.

Greek shaped Sicilian speech. The island’s eastern dialects still carry words of Greek origin.

The theater at Taormina still hosts performances.

Olive cultivation, viticulture, the grid layout of ancient cities, philosophical and dramatic traditions. Greek Sicily developed these across the island’s cities and surrounding countryside.

The Greek legacy survives in Sicily’s monumental architecture, classical mythology, drama, and sculpture.

3. Norman (1061–1194 AD)

The Normans, the same stock that took England in 1066, conquered Muslim-ruled Sicily beginning in 1061. They drew on the island’s existing cultures to build their kingdom.

King Roger II’s court used Arabic, Greek, Latin, and Norman French. His geographer was the Muslim al-Idrisi, who produced the geographical work known as the Tabula Rogeriana, one of the great achievements of medieval cartography.

His administration employed Arabic-speaking officials. Byzantine mosaicists contributed to his royal buildings.

Walk into the Palatine Chapel in Palermo and you see Arab muqarnas ceilings, Byzantine gold mosaics, and Norman Romanesque architecture brought together in one room.

The Cathedral of Monreale, the Zisa palace, the Palazzo dei Normanni. These buildings preserve the work of the different artistic traditions that flourished under Norman patronage.

The Norman kingdom carried Arab and Byzantine knowledge, craftsmanship, and administrative practices into a Latin Christian monarchy. That combination helped shape the architecture and cultural identity we still recognize as Sicilian.

So if we are looking at lasting cultural impact, these three traditions stand out most:

Arab-Islamic Sicily for daily life and cuisine.

Greek Sicily for the ancient imagination.

Norman Sicily for the grand synthesis.

Africa, the Arab world, and Europe collided here and created something extraordinary.

From Amazigh warriors to Baghdadi scholars, Muslim Sicily was a cosmopolitan experiment centuries ahead of its time.

Between 827 and 1091, Sicily became one of the most vibrant realms of the medieval Islamic world. An island transformed by a new faith, language, and way of life.

But who 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 these Muslims who reshaped the island’s destiny?

To start, most of the Arab soldiers, rulers, and early settlers came from North Africa, specifically from the powerful Aghlabid dynasty in Kairouan, in what is now Tunisia.

Yet these forces were far from a monolith.

Many were Amazigh, the indigenous peoples of North Africa, who had accepted Islam in the century following the great revolts of the 8th century. Having once resisted Arab rule, the Amazigh later became key allies, playing a central role in the Aghlabid armies and administration that launched the conquest of Sicily.

This 𝘐𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘲𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘯 (North African) influence would shape nearly every aspect of the new Emirate of Sicily, including its architecture, irrigation systems, governance, and daily rhythms of life.

Mosques were built.

Irrigation systems were expanded.

Palermo became a political and economic powerhouse, admired alongside Cairo and Cordoba.

But to call Muslim Sicily purely North African would be misleading.

As the island stabilized, it attracted a wave of merchants, scholars, poets, and administrators from across the Islamic world, from Egypt, Syria, and Iraq.

Many were invited by the emirs to help govern and enrich the island’s cultural life. These weren’t just military men, they were astronomers, grammarians, geographers, doctors, and jurists.

The result was a cosmopolitan society, layered and sophisticated.

Mosques echoed with North African architecture but held sermons influenced by scholars from the East, including Iraq.

Markets sold Syrian silks beside Sicilian citrus.

Government bureaus operated using Arabic administrative and taxation systems rooted in Abbasid models, adapted to Sicily’s local needs and implemented in bureaucratic Arabic.

And poets composed verses in Arabic while borrowing imagery from Greek and Latin classics still circulating on the island.

Sicily became a 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦.

Between the Maghreb and the Mashriq, between Africa and Europe.

And when the Normans took Palermo in 1072, they didn’t destroy this Arab-Sicilian culture. They preserved it. Translated it. Built upon it.

So the Muslims of Sicily weren’t one people from one place.

They were Ifriqiyan generals, Baghdadi scholars, Cairene merchants, Syrian theologians, and local converts, all contributing to one of the most remarkable cultural experiments of the medieval Mediterranean.

And their legacy is still visible today in the words Sicilians speak, the food they eat, the architecture that dazzles visitors, and the spirit of fusion that defines the island’s soul.

You're standing on a mountain more than two thousand feet above the sea. The air is thin, salted with wind from the North African coast.

Below you, the land tumbles away into valleys of olive trees and wheat.

Above you, the clouds drift so close you can almost touch them.

This is Eryx (modern Erice), one of the most sacred peaks of the ancient Mediterranean.

For nearly two millennia, pilgrims climbed this mountain not for the view, but for the goddess who reigned here.

Long before Greek or Roman ships reached these shores, the Elymians…Sicily’s highland people…venerated a mother goddess here, a local divinity of fertility and the heavens.

The temple we know today rose later, but her worship began long before history recorded her name.

When Phoenician settlers, and later the Carthaginians (from North Africa), arrived, they recognized in her their own Astarte, or Tanit, the celestial protector of sailors and cities.

And so, on this wind-swept height, a new kind of sanctuary was born, one shared by Elymians, Phoenicians, and, in time, Greeks.

A single mountaintop where three worlds knelt before the same divine presence, each in their own tongue.

When Greek settlers reached Sicily, they too were awed by the temple. To them, this was the domain of Aphrodite, goddess of love rising from sea foam.

They renamed her Aphrodite Erycina…

𝘈𝘱𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘹.

And then came the Romans.

The Romans never missed a chance to borrow sanctity.

They adopted the goddess as 𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢, love made political, beauty turned to strategy.

They even built two copies of her temple in Rome, one on the Capitoline Hill and another by the Colline Gate, both claiming descent from this Sicilian shrine.

The mythmakers filled in the rest…

The Trojan hero Aeneas, on his journey from Carthage to Rome, stopped here to build the temple in honor of his divine mother, Venus.

And thus, a mountain in western Sicily became a spiritual bridge, from Troy to Carthage to Rome.

Ancient writers described the temple as magnificent beyond measure, visible to sailors far out at sea. Perhaps so prominent that later generations imagined its fires as eternal beacons guiding travelers home.

Roman writers described the priestesses of Eryx as renowned throughout the Mediterranean, figures of both mystery and allure, though their role has often been mythologized through Roman eyes.

Their rituals blended Elymian mysticism, Punic (Carthaginian) discipline, and Greek grace.

Pilgrims brought offerings of gold, terracotta, doves, and perfume.

Some came for love, others for fertility, and many for safe passage across the dangerous waters that linked three continents.

Later legend held that the temple’s fires were never allowed to die, for if they did, the goddess would withdraw her favor, and the sea itself would turn hostile.

Eryx was not a city of soldiers or merchants. It was something rarer.

A city of mediation.

Punic generals offered sacrifices here before battle.

Greek poets wrote hymns to its goddess.

Roman governors, weathered from storms, climbed the slope to give thanks for their survival.

Through faith, the Elymians achieved what armies could not...

They turned their homeland into neutral ground, a sacred place where enemies could worship side by side.

In a world of constant conquest, Eryx remained a summit of unity amid division, a reminder that civilizations could meet not only in war, but in reverence.

Even after Christianity spread across the island, the goddess lingered.

Her temple fell to ruin, but her name endured.

In the Middle Ages, the Normans built a fortress over the old sanctuary and, tellingly, called it the 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴.

Today, the ruins of that castle still stand.

And on clear days, when the clouds part and the sea burns gold at sunset, Mount Erice seems to hover between worlds, half earth, half heaven, just as it did when Elymian hands first raised stones to the sky.

Eryx reminds us of something profound about Sicily...

That this island was never a borderland.

It was the beating heart of the ancient Mediterranean.

A bridge between Africa and Europe.

East and West.

Myth and history.

Wherever empires clashed, Sicily absorbed.

Whatever gods arrived, Sicily transformed.

And on this mountain, beneath the eternal light of 𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢, all those worlds once met, and became one.

“Una faccia, una razza.” One face, one race.

You’ll hear it shouted between Southern Italians and Greeks in tavernas, at weddings, in crowded ferry ports...from Piraeus to Palermo, Naples to Bari.

Half jest, half truth, and fully felt.

But where does this phrase come from? And why does it resonate so deeply?

The saying “𝘜𝘯𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘢, 𝘶𝘯𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘻𝘢” (one face, one race) is believed to have gained traction in the 20th century during World War II and the Axis occupation of Greece, when Italian soldiers were stationed across the islands.

While the war bred tension and resentment, it also created unexpected cultural recognition…between Italian and Greek conscripts and villagers who 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘴, shared meals, mannerisms, expressions, and even superstitions.

It was often said half-jokingly, but with a sense of sincere recognition: “𝘞𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦. 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦. 𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭.”

But its roots run much, much deeper.

Southern Italians and Greeks have shared blood since antiquity.

In the 8th century BC, Greek settlers founded dozens of poleis across southern Italy and Sicily.

Neapolis (Napoli), Syrákousai (Siracusa), Akragas (Agrigento), and many more, turning the region into what historians would call 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘢 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢…Greater Greece.

Sicilian Greek cities rivaled Athens in art, philosophy, and politics.

The philosopher Empedocles was born in Akragas (modern day Agrigento).

The mathematician Archimedes died defending Syrákousai (modern day Siracusa) from the Romans.

Greek vocabulary entered Latin, especially in science and philosophy, influencing some of the terms later carried into the Romance languages.

In fact, the Sicilian language itself still preserves dozens of Greek-derived words, many rooted in the Doric dialects of Magna Graecia and reinforced through later Byzantine contact.

Even Sicilian foods like olives, figs, wine, and honeyed pastries echo the ancient Greek palate.

And on both sides of the Ionian Sea, you’ll still find women mourning in black, men making the same hand gestures, and grandmothers cursing with the same guttural emphasis.

Today, when a Southern Italian tells a Greek “𝘜𝘯𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘢, 𝘶𝘯𝘢 𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘻𝘢,” it’s an expression of ancestral memory. A nod across millennia of shared myths, shared invasions, shared resistance, and a Mediterranean sun that shaped them both.

And whether shouted in jest or whispered with a wink, it remains one of the most heartfelt phrases in the Mediterranean.

I want to take a moment to address a phrase that has a curious habit of appearing in my comments whenever I write about Sicily’s Arab and North African history, its centuries of cultural exchange, or the very real Mediterranean ancestry reflected in Sicilians today, a phrase that’s important enough to call out directly:

“I’m full-blooded Italian. Stop trying to make us something we’re not.”

At first glance, “full-blooded Italian” might sound like pride in heritage.

And to be clear, I understand that some Italian Americans use the phrase simply to mean that both sides of their family came from Italy.

That’s not what I’m talking about here.

I’m talking about the way it shows up specifically when the conversation turns to Arabs, North Africans, Muslims, or any part of Sicily’s history that complicates the idea of a culturally or ethnically “pure” Italian identity.

Scratch beneath the surface of these comments, and you’ll find that “full-blooded Italian” is often being used as a gatekeeping label. A way to dismiss or discredit those of us who reflect the real history of Sicily and the Italian peninsula writ-large:

Mixed, multicultural, and forged by centuries of exchange.

If being “full-blooded Italian” means untouched by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Amazigh, Norman, Spanish, or any of the countless peoples who crossed the Mediterranean, then guess what?

No such purity exists.

We are the product of conquests, trade routes, migrations, empires, and rebellions.

Just look at my dad.

He was born in Porticello, Sicily, a small fishing village just outside Palermo.

The son of a shipwright carpenter.

A true Sicilian, in every sense.

A few years ago, he had his DNA analyzed and graciously allowed me to share the results here for educational purposes.

His genetic profile is far from the simplistic idea of “full-blooded Italian.”

It’s a stunning blend of Southern European, North African, and Middle Eastern ancestry.

Not proof that one particular percentage came from one particular conquest or century, but a living reminder of the Mediterranean crossroads Sicily has occupied for thousands of years, especially during its centuries under Arab and Norman rule.

And furthermore, when I post images depicting Aetna Vespiri, the hero of the Sicilian Vespers revolt from my historical fiction novel, Siciliana, I get messages like:

“She doesn’t look Sicilian.”
“Too Arabic.”
“Not one of us.”

That is precisely why this conversation matters.

Who, exactly, gets to decide what a Sicilian should look like?

By 1282, Sicily had already experienced centuries of Byzantine and Islamic rule followed by the extraordinary Arab-Greek-Latin cultural world of Norman Sicily. Its population had been shaped by generations of movement across the Mediterranean long before anyone conceived of “Italian” identity in the modern national sense.

So when someone looks at a Sicilian character with darker skin, North African or Middle Eastern features and declares her “not Sicilian,” they are not defending history.

They are imposing a modern stereotype onto it.

Aetna Vespiri doesn’t just look Sicilian.

She is Sicilian.

Fierce, defiant, and born of a Mediterranean crossroads that refused to be anything but itself.

So if by “full-blooded Italian” you simply mean, “all of my grandparents came from Italy,” fine. That is a statement about your family tree.

But if you mean “there is a pure Italian type, and I get to decide who belongs to it based on blood, ancestry, or appearance,” history has something very different to say.

Sicily’s story, like that of the Italian peninsula writ-large, has always been one of mixture and diversity.

And that’s exactly what makes it powerful.

September 14, 1776.

Night settles over the East River.

Across the black water, the British invasion fleet lies at anchor. Lanterns glow along the decks. Officers move between cabins carrying maps and written orders. Sailors prepare landing boats. Gun crews stack powder beside their cannons.

Thousands of British and Hessian soldiers sleep aboard transports, expecting to invade Manhattan at dawn.

Now change one thing.

They do not know that SEAL Team Six is already in the river.

To keep the experiment interesting, they arrive without helicopters, drones, satellites, naval support, or resupply. They possess modern rifles, precision optics, radios, explosives, night-vision equipment, medical supplies, and enough ammunition to fight for two weeks.

Could sixteen modern special operators stop one of the largest amphibious invasions of the eighteenth century?

Operating primarily under cover of darkness, their first strike would begin at 2:00 a.m.

The SEALs would approach the shoreline as a hunting ground and treat the invasion fleet as a network of critical targets.

Commanders. Pilots. Signalmen. Powder stores. Landing boats. Rudders. Anchor cables.

In the darkness, the British would be nearly blind. Their sentries would depend upon lanterns, moonlight, and shouted warnings. Through night-vision equipment, the SEALs would see every exposed man.

A British officer steps onto the quarterdeck.

Pfft! One suppressed shot. He falls before anyone understands what happened.

A signalman raises a lantern.

Pfft! Another shot.

A boatswain turns toward the sound.

Pfft! Another.

The SEALs would focus on making command impossible.

Operators could approach the anchored ships from the water, placing explosives against rudders, landing boats, anchor cables, and vulnerable sections of the hull.

BOOM! A blast erupts beneath a transport.

BOOM! Then another explosion farther upriver.

Sailors rush onto the decks carrying lights, exposing themselves to marksmen hidden along the Manhattan shoreline.

Pfft! Pfft! Pfft! Men on the decks drop like flies. Every panicked attempt to restore order reveals another open target.

By morning, the invasion fleet could already be damaged and disoriented. Landing craft would be missing or drifting. Officers would be dead. Ships might be unable to maneuver. Rumors would spread that phantom riflemen were hiding everywhere.

Then daylight comes…

September 15, 1776.

Historically, British frigates moved close to Kip’s Bay and unleashed devastating cannon fire. The American militia broke beneath the bombardment, allowing British and Hessian troops to land with little resistance.

This time, the British ships begin the morning with several of their officers, signalmen, pilots, and gun captains already gone.

The surviving commanders, stressed and disoriented, order the bombardment anyway.

Gunports open.

Cannons thunder across the East River.

The shoreline disappears behind smoke, flying earth, shattered timber, and splintered trees.

The SEALs are already gone.

Before dawn, they have abandoned every obvious trench and firing position. They are scattered among orchards, stone walls, farmhouses, wooded slopes, and prepared hides overlooking the water.

The Royal Navy pounds empty ground.

The first British landing wave advances through the smoke.

Dozens of flatboats move toward Manhattan, crowded with redcoats, Hessian grenadiers, sailors, sergeants, and officers standing above their men.

The SEALs wait.

Their fire is deliberate and precise. They begin with the officers.

Pfft! A British captain standing in the leading boat falls backward.

Pfft! The sailor steering the boat collapses next. The craft lists, turns sideways into the current, and collides with another.

Farther down the line, a Hessian officer rises to signal the boats behind him.

Pfft! He disappears beneath the gunwale.

A sergeant takes command.

Pfft! He falls seconds later.

Another boat loses its helmsman. Another drifts away from the formation. Orders are shouted, swallowed by cannon fire, musket volleys, screaming sailors, and crashing boats.

The shooters remain nearly invisible. Modern rifles produce almost no visible signature compared with black-powder muskets, and by the time soldiers fire toward one suspected position, the SEALs have already moved.

Some boats still reach the beach.

The British and Hessians were disciplined soldiers. They begin forming ranks as they historically did.

This time, they meet a Continental Army standing its ground.

George Washington, who historically rode toward the fleeing militia in frustration, now sees something entirely different. He watches the British landing descend into confusion. Officers are falling. Boats are colliding. Commands are breaking down.

He has no idea who is responsible. He does know one thing.

The British are vulnerable.

Washington rallies the Continentals and commits fresh regiments to the fight. Units that historically retreated now advance into prepared secondary positions behind stone walls, orchards, fences, and rising ground. American artillery remains in action and begins firing into disorganized landing zones.

The SEALs become the scalpel.

Washington’s army becomes the hammer.

Whenever a British officer attempts to restore order, a precision shot removes him. Every minute that confusion spreads gives the Continental Army more time to reinforce, reposition, and counterattack.

British units that make it ashore discover their commanders dead, their reinforcements delayed, and organized American resistance waiting for them.

Kip’s Bay becomes a grinding battle for a foothold.

Could the British simply bombard Manhattan until the defenders surrendered?

They could try.

Naval artillery could devastate an area. Sixteen operators constantly changing position would remain extraordinarily difficult to locate while thousands of Continental soldiers occupied the ground behind them. Every ship conducting the bombardment would still require officers, signalmen, observers, and sailors to expose themselves.

Could the British land somewhere else?

Almost certainly.

They controlled the surrounding waterways and possessed overwhelming numbers. They could move north, attack another section of Manhattan, or launch several landings at once.

Every new landing would require officers to gather, boats to assemble, signals to be raised, and ships to anchor.

Every night, the sixteen operators would strike again.

Every morning, the British would rebuild their command.

Every night, it would begin falling apart.

The final verdict: Yes. For the two-week limits of this thought experiment, sixteen operators from SEAL Team Six, fighting alongside George Washington’s army, could plausibly prevent the British from establishing a secure landing on Manhattan.

The decisive factor would extend far beyond firepower. It would be morale.

Historically, Washington’s defense unraveled because the militia panicked under the bombardment.

In this alternate history, the psychological momentum swings toward the Americans.

As British officers fall, landing craft drift helplessly, and invasion plans dissolve into confusion, the psychological advantage shifts to the Americans. Washington’s soldiers, seeing the invaders stagger and falter, fight harder and hold their ground.

The SEALs amplify the Continental Army. They give it exactly what it lacked at Kip’s Bay: time, confidence, and an enemy thrown into chaos.

Britain would still possess 30,000 soldiers, naval supremacy, and the ability to continue the campaign after the SEALs’ two weeks of ammunition expired.

For those fourteen days at least, Manhattan would hold.

And the Battle of Kip’s Bay would be remembered as the day Washington’s army stood, and Britain’s invasion broke.

Two names. One woman.

Aetna Vespiri walks the streets of 1282 Palermo as the dutiful daughter of a fallen Sicilian knight…watchful, resilient, hiding the traumatic scars left by war.

She knows what it is to lose everything: her family’s vineyard, her childhood innocence, her trust in the world.

Yet every loss has sharpened her resolve.

When the bells toll for Vespers beneath the moonlit sky of Easter night, another side awakens.

That’s when 𝘚𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 rises…the spark behind an uprising that will set a nation ablaze.

There is a strange irony buried inside the story of Christopher Columbus.

When Columbus sailed west in 1492, he was not trying to prove that the Earth was round.

Educated people in Europe already knew it was round.

And Muslim astronomers had been calculating the size of that spherical Earth with remarkable sophistication centuries before Columbus was born.

The idea of a spherical Earth was ancient. Greek thinkers including Aristotle accepted it, and around the third century BC, Eratosthenes calculated the Earth’s circumference with impressive accuracy.

But after antiquity, an enormous amount of Greek scientific knowledge was translated, studied, preserved, criticized, and expanded upon by scholars working in the Islamic world.

Baghdad became one of the great centers of this scientific tradition.

And one of the astronomers working there would eventually become surprisingly important to the Columbus story.

His name was Aḥmad al-Farghānī, known in medieval Latin Europe as Alfraganus.

In the ninth century, al-Farghānī wrote an influential astronomical work based partly upon Ptolemaic astronomy. His writings circulated far beyond the Islamic world and were eventually translated into Latin, becoming part of the astronomical tradition studied in medieval and Renaissance Europe.

Al-Farghānī gave the length of one degree of the Earth’s circumference as approximately 56⅔ miles.

Multiply that by 360 degrees and you have a remarkably reasonable estimate of the size of the spherical Earth, provided you understand what kind of “mile” he meant.

And that is where Columbus enters the story.

Columbus knew al-Farghānī’s number.

But he appears to have interpreted it using the wrong mile.

The Arabic mile associated with the calculation was considerably longer than the Italian mile Columbus used.

As a result, Columbus took a figure that worked reasonably well using the Arabic mile and interpreted it using a much shorter European unit.

That helped make the Earth appear significantly smaller than it really is.

And Columbus made other geographical assumptions that shortened the journey even further.

He believed Eurasia stretched much farther eastward than it actually does, and he accepted exaggerated ideas about how far Japan lay east of the Asian mainland.

Put all those errors together and Columbus convinced himself that Asia was reachable by sailing west across the Atlantic.

That was the real controversy.

It wasn’t Columbus saying “The Earth is round!”while everyone else shouted, “No, it’s flat!”

That’s largely a later myth.

The serious geographical question was:

How big is the Earth, and how much ocean lies between Europe and Asia if you sail west?

And on that question, Columbus was spectacularly wrong.

Had the Americas not stood between Europe and Asia, his expedition would have faced an ocean vastly larger than the one he expected.

There is another layer of irony.

While Columbus was attempting to reach Asia from the west, Muslim merchants had already participated for centuries in vast commercial networks stretching through the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, East Africa, India, and farther into the Indian Ocean world.

The Europe of Columbus did not develop its geographical and astronomical knowledge in isolation.

Greek, Persian, Indian, Arab, Jewish, and Latin intellectual traditions crossed borders, languages, religions, and centuries. Muslim scholars did not merely preserve ancient science; they developed sophisticated mathematical and astronomical traditions of their own, which subsequently became part of European scientific culture.

The presence of al-Farghānī in European astronomical education illustrates that transmission particularly well.

Columbus himself studied Pierre d’Ailly’s Imago Mundi extensively, covering his copy with annotations. D’Ailly’s cosmography was one of the sources that encouraged Columbus’s underestimated westward distance to Asia.

So perhaps the most historically interesting way to tell the story isn’t: “Columbus proved the Earth was round.” He didn’t.

Nor is it quite accurate to say that Muslims discovered America for Columbus.

The real story is better.

Columbus’s voyage was partly the product of centuries of knowledge moving between civilizations.

Ancient Greeks calculated the Earth.

Scholars of the Islamic world inherited that knowledge, translated it, tested it, expanded it, and developed their own mathematical astronomy.

Works by Muslim astronomers such as al-Farghānī entered Latin Europe.

And eventually, a Genoese navigator named Christopher Columbus used geographical ideas drawn from that interconnected intellectual world to argue that he could reach Asia by sailing west.

The extraordinary punchline is that al-Farghānī’s number wasn’t the problem. Columbus’s interpretation of it was.

The Muslim astronomer had given him a reasonably good Earth. Columbus helped make it smaller. And in 1492, he sailed west looking for Asia, and ran into a world he didn’t know was there.

Cannoli aren’t solely Sicilian in origin.

The Arabs brought sugarcane, citrus, and pistachio cultivation to Sicily in the 9th century, along with techniques for sweetened ricotta.

Even cannoli’s signature tube-shaped shells likely draw inspiration from Arab dessert traditions such as 𝘲𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘸𝘢̄𝘵, which featured filled, fried pastries in similar forms.

Sicily took it, remixed it, and gave the world its sweetest icon.

In the first days of October 1347, twelve ships appeared on the horizon off Messina.

They were Genoese galleys.

And they were carrying death.

Messina was one of medieval Sicily’s great maritime gateways, facing the narrow strait separating the island from Calabria. Ships came and went with merchants, sailors, cargo, news, and fortunes from across the Mediterranean.

There was no reason to imagine that these vessels would be different.

Until they entered the harbor.

The Sicilian chronicler known as Michele da Piazza, writing in the fourteenth century, recorded what happened next. Twelve Genoese galleys arrived at Messina carrying a mysterious sickness so lethal that, in his understanding, merely interacting with the afflicted seemed enough to bring death.

The people aboard were sick.

Soon, the people of Messina were sick too.

Victims developed painful swellings around the thigh or arm. Their bodies were racked with illness. Some coughed or spat blood. According to the chronicler, many died within only a few days.

The people of Messina quickly understood one terrifying fact…

Whatever had arrived aboard those ships was spreading.

They drove the Genoese vessels from the harbor.

But it was already too late.

The enemy was not an army that could be expelled through the city gates. It was Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for the pandemic we now call the Black Death.

And its journey to Sicily had begun thousands of miles away.

Modern genetic evidence points toward Central Eurasia as the source region of the fourteenth-century pandemic. Ancient DNA recovered from people buried near Lake Issyk-Kul in modern Kyrgyzstan in 1338–1339 contains a strain of Yersinia pestis ancestral to the great diversification associated with the Black Death.

From across Eurasia, plague moved along networks of trade and human movement toward the Black Sea and Mediterranean.

One infamous chapter unfolded at Caffa, the Genoese trading colony in Crimea.

During a siege in the 1340s, plague struck the army of the Golden Horde. The Genoese writer Gabriele de’ Mussi later claimed that the besiegers hurled infected corpses over Caffa’s walls.

The story is horrifying, and possible, but historians caution against turning it into a simple origin story for the Black Death in Europe. De’ Mussi was probably not an eyewitness, and plague was already moving through interconnected Black Sea ports and trade routes. Infected ships did not need a catapult to carry the disease westward.

By 1347, plague had reached Constantinople and was moving through the Mediterranean.

Then came Messina.

What followed there reads like the collapse of a city in a nightmare.

As deaths multiplied, the sick called for priests to hear their confessions and notaries to prepare their wills. But those who entered infected houses risked becoming victims themselves.

Clergy died.

Officials died.

Families became afraid to approach their own dead.

Michele da Piazza described corpses lying abandoned inside houses while relatives searched for anyone willing to bury them. Homes stood open, possessions left behind.

Fear began accomplishing what the disease had not.

It emptied the city.

Messinesi fled into the countryside, camping in fields and vineyards. Others headed south toward Catania, hoping that Saint Agatha, the city’s patron saint, might protect them from the pestilence.

But flight carried its own terrible consequence.

The people escaping the plague could carry the plague with them.

Messina had become the doorway.

From Sicily and other Mediterranean ports, the pandemic moved relentlessly westward and northward. Genoa, Venice, Marseille and other cities would be struck as plague penetrated deeper into Europe, while simultaneously devastating communities across the Middle East and North Africa.

Within only a few years, the Black Death had transformed the medieval world.

Modern estimates of its mortality vary, but in many affected regions the losses were staggering. Entire communities were disrupted. Labor systems changed. Economies convulsed. Religious and social assumptions were shaken by death on a scale almost impossible to comprehend.

Yet in Sicily, the horror had announced itself with something deceptively ordinary.

Ships entering a harbor.

Sails on the horizon.

Sailors coming ashore.

For centuries, Sicily’s position at the center of the Mediterranean had made it a crossroads of civilizations, connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia through commerce, migration, conquest, and cultural exchange.

In October 1347, those same maritime arteries carried something else.

The people of Messina looked toward the sea and watched twelve Genoese galleys approach.

They could not have known it then.

The Black Death had reached Sicily.

Some artists fit a genre. TÄRA had to build one.

The 23-year-old from the province of Frosinone calls it Arab&B: R&B with Levantine melody in it, UK bass underneath, and lyrics that slide between Italian, Arabic, and English mid-verse.

The name is a joke and a thesis at once. Italian pop has a slot for almost everything except this, so she built the slot herself.

Her full name is Tamara Al Zool, and the umlaut over TÄRA is deliberate.

She grew up with an Arabic surname that already looked unusual in Italy, two O’s sitting inside a name that teachers and classmates did not always know how to pronounce. So she took that sense of doubleness and made it visible in her stage name. The umlaut became a small symbol of duality, a mark placed there on purpose.

She had heard that duality every morning at roll call, her name first on the list, the teacher hesitating before the easy run of Italian names that followed.

Al… Zooool?

For years, the stumble tried to make her smaller.

She decided to sing into it.

Her debut EP, Zefiro, landed on May 15th, the anniversary of the Nakba, the date Palestinians mark as the loss of their homeland in 1948.

Her grandparents lived it. Her father carried it to Italy. She was born downstream of it and turned it into six songs.

She is doing this at the least likely moment in Italian music.

The country invented opera and gave the world Morricone, then spent the back half of the last century chasing the American charts so hard that in 1972 Adriano Celentano scored a continental number one with Prisencolinensinainciusol, a song built from pure gibberish engineered to sound like English.

The joke worked because it exposed the spell. Europe did not even need to understand English to imitate its authority.

Five decades on, the market has turned all the way inward.

According to FIMI, Italy’s official music federation, Italian acts held 90% of the country’s top ten albums and singles in the first half of 2025, with Bad Bunny the only foreign name in the top 25 albums.

A trilingual Arab-Italian R&B record is not what that chart was built to reward.

TÄRA points further back, to Dalida, born Yolanda Gigliotti in Cairo, raised in Italy, made famous in France, and beloved across the Arab world. Dalida sold more than 170 million records and moved between Arabic, Italian, French, and English with an ease that now feels almost forgotten.

For TÄRA, that matters because what she is doing is not entirely new. It is older than the current categories allow. Multilingual, Mediterranean, Arab-European pop has existed before. It just keeps being forgotten and rediscovered.

Friction, it turns out, is where the sharpest work comes from, and she has lived inside it her whole life.

The record began in the stillness of 2020. Lockdown gave her room to notice what diaspora quietly takes. She returned to her instruments, to writing, to putting imperfect thoughts on paper until they became songs. That pause connected her back to parts of herself she felt she was losing.

The three languages she lives in each carry a piece of her.

Arabic is the language of family, soul, and faith. Italian is the language that connected her to the place where the music happened. English is the language of curiosity and exploration. Together, they form the emotional structure of Zefiro.

Most of the industry told her to round herself off.

Gianluca Sala did the reverse.

A songwriter of 30 years who launched the Rome independent label Troppo Records in 2020 at 41, Sala found her on a TikTok live where he was fielding up to a hundred demos an hour. The day she submitted, the comparing stopped.

What caught him was not a finished industry product, but an artistic personality already intact. The voice, the melodic instinct, the refusal to fit neatly into an existing category, all of it was already there. She did not need to be invented. She needed space.

Most people around him thought she was too particular, too different, too strange. They advised him to make something more popular, something easier, something more recognizably Italian.

He did the opposite.

Troppo Records released Zefiro in partnership with Sony Music.

The reach arrived before the album did. She auditioned for X Factor Italia in 2024 wearing a keffiyeh, landed on the covers of Spotify’s Fresh Finds Italia and Anima R&B, and reached Sanremo Giovani in 2025, all with no full project out.

Her official Italian fan club is run by a 15-year-old who has said TÄRA’s Instagram reels documenting Palestinian life in Gaza were the first thing that made the war legible to her.

With fewer than 2,000 Palestinians in Italy’s official count, there were few other places to learn it.

That is part of what makes Zefiro so pointed.

It asks Palestinians to be heard as people before they are reduced to headlines.

Mezzaluna is the 3 a.m. feeling of reaching for something familiar and finding it gone.

Chiamo casa, casa non c’è.

I call home. Home isn’t there.

Diaspora sets two departures side by side: Palestinian families expelled from their land, and Southern Italians who leave their own out of necessity. It connects Palestine’s exile to Italy’s internal diaspora, the South drained of its artists and workers as people move north to survive.

Yafa makes Jaffa a place she inherited rather than walked.

Her grandparents described it so many times that the streets, the sea, and the smells become almost tactile through the music. The song keeps asking whether memory can become a form of possession when possession itself has been taken.

Do you remember when you could go to the sea in Jaffa?

Then come the keys.

Some Palestinian families still hold the metal keys to houses lost in 1948, long after the locks disappeared, the doors changed, or the homes became unreachable. In Zefiro, the key becomes proof and promise at once. It is the last physical witness to a home the world keeps trying to turn into a dispute.

Metal surviving longer than the lock.

Sala sees her as already viral in the deeper sense. She does not need to become Italian. She already is Italian, just not the version the country is used to exporting.

But what TÄRA wants is narrower and harder than fame.

After three years of violence in Gaza and the West Bank, described by the UN and major human rights groups as genocidal, she frames the music as rescue work. A culture she inherited is being threatened, and she feels the need to show it before more of it disappears.

The most dangerous thing she can do, she knows, is make a stranger feel something true.

So she uses her voice.

In two languages of grief and one of curiosity.

Under a name she spelled strange on purpose.

In a country still deciding what to call her.

In Vienna today, inside the Imperial Treasury of the Hofburg, there is a mantle so strange, so luxurious, and so politically loaded that it almost feels fictional.

Gold embroidery.

Pearls.

Enamel.

Two lions overpowering two saddled camels beneath a stylized palm tree.

And along the curved hem, not Latin. Not Greek. Arabic.

This is the famous mantle associated with Roger II, the Norman king of Sicily. It is often called the “coronation mantle,” but the name is slightly misleading. Roger was crowned king in 1130. The Arabic inscription on the hem dates the mantle itself to the Islamic year 528—1133/34 AD—which means it was made several years after his coronation. The more accurate description: a royal mantle made for Roger II’s court in Palermo, later used as a coronation robe by Holy Roman Emperors.

That correction does not weaken the object. It makes it stranger.

Because this mantle was made in Norman Sicily, in the royal workshops of Palermo, during the reign of a Christian king whose court still carried the artistic, linguistic, and administrative legacy of Islamic Sicily. The Normans had conquered the island from Muslim rulers in the eleventh century. They did not erase the world they found there. They absorbed it. They curated it. They wore it.

Look at it carefully.

The base is patterned samite, dyed with kermes. The silk ground itself was probably imported from Byzantine looms. The pearls, tens of thousands of them, came through Mediterranean and Islamic luxury networks. The gold thread, the tiraz tradition, and the Kufic calligraphy were the work of Arab craftsmen in Palermo’s royal workshop.

The shape itself resembles a Christian pluviale, the ceremonial cope worn by bishops and popes.

No single culture made this object.

Now read the iconography.

At the center stands a palm tree. The Tree of Life. The motif is older than the Norman world itself: Sumerian, Persian, Byzantine, Islamic, Christian. Everyone who looked at it saw something they recognized. That was the point.

On either side of the palm, mirrored, two lions sink their claws into two camels. The lions are the royal animal of Norman kingship…Roger’s power.

The camels wear saddles and bridles. They are domesticated. The museum’s catalog reads the composition plainly: the triumph of the lion over the camel is a demonstration of the ruler defeating his enemies.

This is a king’s robe announcing, in embroidered gold, that the people who made it are the people he conquered.

But look again at the bodies of those lions. They are filled with rosettes, tendrils, and eight-pointed stars. The visual vocabulary of Islamic ornamental art. The Norman lion is woven through with the patterns of the world it overcame.

That was true of the mantle. It was true of Sicily.

The inscription.

Along the curved hem, in gold Kufic script, runs a single line of Arabic. It is not a Qur’anic verse. It is not an Islamic prayer. It is a royal workshop inscription written in the prestige language of the courtly Mediterranean. In translation, it ends with the phrase that matters most:

“In the city of Sicily, in the year 528.”

The “city of Sicily” is Palermo. Year 528 is the Hijri year. In other words, one of the most famous royal garments of medieval Christian Europe dates itself not by the Christian calendar, but by the Islamic one.

The Arab craftsmen of Palermo blessed their Norman king in the syntax they might have used for an emir. Whether the blessing was sincere, contractual, ironic, or coerced, no one will ever know.

That is Norman Sicily in one object.

A Christian king. A royal workshop in Palermo. A semicircle of crimson Byzantine silk. A triumphal image of lions conquering camels. Arabic praise from Palermo. A Hijri date stitched into the hem.

Roger II’s Sicily stood at the crossroads of Latin Christian, Byzantine Greek, and Arabic-Islamic worlds. Roger’s royal ‘alama appeared on chancery deeds in flowing Arabic script. His court geographer was Muhammad al-Idrisi, who produced for him the Tabula Rogeriana.

The mantle tells us exactly how Roger wanted to be seen. Not merely as a Norman count promoted into kingship, nor as a Latin Christian ruler on an island. But as a Mediterranean sovereign. A king powerful enough to command multiple civilizations at once.

Then the mantle outlived him.

Generations of Roman-German kings and Holy Roman Emperors were crowned in a Sicilian robe embroidered in Arabic praise of a Norman king. Many of them likely did not know what the writing said. For centuries, the Arabic was mistaken for ornament.

And here is the harder truth.

The craftsmen embroidering the king’s robe in Arabic praise belonged to a world that had once ruled the island, now working in the royal workshop of the men who had displaced it. Palermo had been Norman for about sixty years. The great mosque had long since become the cathedral.

Ibn Jubayr would still find mosques, Muslim schools, and public calls to prayer in Palermo, but he would also record that the Friday khutba in the name of the caliph was banned except on feast days.

The mantle is not a fairy tale of tolerance. It is not simple multicultural harmony.

It is conquest transformed into couture.

Stand in front of it sometime. Look at the lions filled with stars. Look at the saddled camels. Look at the palm tree at the center holding a hundred civilizations together.

Then read the line along the hem—in the city of Sicily, in the year 528—and remember that this is a Norman king’s robe, embroidered by Arab hands, in a Byzantine fabric, in the shape of a Christian bishop’s cloak, dated by the calendar of Mecca.

There is no single culture in which this object makes sense.

That is what makes it Sicilian.

The Sicilian people weren’t faceless subjects.

They were mothers, fathers, children...people whose only crime was wanting freedom.

Now, Lady Manon Orleans stands at the crossroads of destiny.

On one side, loyalty to her father and king demands that she condemn the rebellion, to see the Sicilians as traitors deserving of the sword.

No one called “the Moors” ever ruled Sicily.

The term itself is a European exonym, derived from the Latin Mauri, originally used by the Romans to describe the Amazigh inhabitants of the province of Mauretania in what is now Morocco and western Algeria.

By the medieval period, it had become a loose, catch-all label that Christian Europeans applied to the Muslim populations of the Iberian Peninsula, the forces that crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 711 under the Amazigh general Tariq ibn Ziyad and held parts of Spain for nearly eight centuries.

That was al-Andalus. That was Iberia.

That was not Sicily.

Sicily’s Islamic period, roughly 827 to 1091, was governed by three distinct Arab dynasties, each with traceable genealogies and documented political identities within the Arab-Islamic Mediterranean world.

The Aghlabids launched the conquest in 827 from Ifriqiya, modern-day Tunisia.

They were an Arab dynasty descended from the Banu Tamim tribe, ruling as autonomous emirs under the nominal authority of the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad. They sent an army of 10,000 men under the jurist Asad ibn al-Furat after a renegade Byzantine commander named Euphemius invited them in. Palermo fell by 831. Syracuse by 878. Taormina, the last Byzantine holdout, by 902.

The Fatimids replaced the Aghlabids in North Africa after 909.

They were a Shia Arab dynastic house claiming descent from Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Their rise depended heavily on the military support of the Kutama Berbers, but their political and dynastic identity was Arab-Islamic. They governed Sicily through appointed governors until delegating power to a local dynasty.

That local dynasty was the Kalbids, who ruled Sicily semi-autonomously from 948 to 1053.

They descended from the Arab tribe of Banu Kalb, originally of Arabian and Syrian origin. Under the Kalbids, Palermo became one of the great cities of the Mediterranean—a center of Arabic poetry, trade, silk production, and Islamic scholarship that rivaled anything in the broader Muslim world. The geographer Ibn Hawqal visited in the 970s and counted over 300 mosques in Palermo alone.

These were the actual rulers of Islamic Sicily. Arab dynasties. Named. Documented. Traceable in the coinage, the chronicles, and the administrative records of the period.

So where did “the Moors” come from in the Sicilian imagination?

Folklore.

Specifically, the folklore that emerged after the Norman conquest.

Folklore shaped by centuries of Christian reframing.

Every August in Piazza Armerina, the Palio dei Normanni reenacts Roger de Hauteville’s “liberation” of the island from “the Saracens.”

In Messina, the colossal papier-mâché statues of Mata and Grifone parade through the streets. Mata, the local Christian girl, and Grifone, “a Moor,” depicted as a dark-skinned giant who converts to Catholicism for love.

The Opera dei Pupi, Sicily’s famous puppet theater, staged battle after battle between noble Christian knights and turbaned Muslim enemies for centuries. In all of this folk tradition, the Muslim figure is generalized, racialized, and flattened into a single image: dark, foreign, threatening, eventually defeated.

This is theater. It is not history.

And then there is the Testa di Moro, arguably Sicily’s most iconic ceramic object.

The legend behind it tells of a Palermo girl in the Kalsa district who falls in love with a visiting “Moor,” only to discover he has a wife and children back home. She cuts off his head in his sleep and turns it into a planter. The basil grows beautifully. The neighbors start making their own ceramic versions. A folk tradition is born.

It’s a vivid story. It’s also built on a historical misnomer. The man in the legend is called a “Moor,” but the actual Muslim inhabitants of Palermo’s Kalsa quarter were not “Moors.” They were part of the Arab-Islamic administrative and merchant class that the Aghlabids and Kalbids had established.

The word “Moor” was never their word. It was never their identity. It was imposed retroactively by later European convention, the same convention that slapped the label on every Muslim from Córdoba to Colombo.

Now, does any of this mean there were no dark-skinned individuals in Islamic Sicily? Of course not.

The Arab-Islamic world was a vast, multiethnic civilization that stretched from the Atlantic to Central Asia. It encompassed Amazigh, Sub-Saharan Africans, Persians, Levantine Arabs, Turkic peoples, and everyone in between.

The Aghlabid army itself included enslaved Black soldiers. The historical record notes 5,000 Zanj troops garrisoned at their capital of al-Abbasiya. Dark-skinned people were undeniably part of this world.

But “part of this world” and “the ruling dynastic and cultural identity” are two entirely different claims. The leap from “dark-skinned individuals existed within the broader Muslim population” to “the rulers of Sicily were Black Africans” is not history. It is racial projection. An Afrocentric distortion that mirrors the Eurocentric distortion it claims to correct.

Festival reenactments where the Muslim is painted black are not evidence for the ethnic makeup of the Aghlabids.

The Testa di Moro is not a portrait of a real historical person.

Modern DNA tests from Sicilian families tell you about ancestry over a thousand years of mixing. They do not tell you what the Emir of Palermo looked like in 965.

The actual history is extraordinary enough without the mythology.

Sicily’s Arab period produced one of the most sophisticated multicultural civilizations in the medieval Mediterranean. A place where Arabic poetry flourished, where citrus and sugarcane transformed the landscape, where irrigation systems were engineered that wouldn’t be matched in Europe for centuries, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews coexisted under a system that, for all its inequalities, generated astonishing cultural output.

That civilization was built by identifiable people from identifiable dynasties operating in a specific political world. They had names. They have records. They deserve to be called what they actually were, and not buried under a catch-all European slur that was never theirs.

Let’s stop calling them “Moors.”

The sea stretched endlessly before Siciliana, her eyes locking onto the horizon. A fleet of Messinese warships, sails snapping in the wind, inched closer. The Messinese, once brothers and sisters, now bore the banner of their Angevin oppressors, ready to strike against their own kind.

Roger Mastrangelo, captain of the Teutonic knights, rode up beside her, his brow furrowed. "Can you believe it? Sicilians willing to fight their own for those Angevin dogs."

Siciliana met his words with a grim stare, her voice laced with understanding. "Messina’s families are starving, Capitano. There’s no man more desperate than one whose children are crying from hunger. Fear drives even the bravest to madness."

Mastrangelo nodded, gripping the hilt of his sword. "Damn them for forcing us into this position."

Around her, the men and women gripped their weapons—rusty swords, spears, anything they could find since seizing Palermo from the Angevins weeks ago. These rebels were not warriors. They were farmers, merchants, mothers, and fathers. But today their hearts burned with the fire of a people fighting for freedom.

The ground trembled beneath them as the rebels roared in response, fists raised to the sky, their hearts beating as one.

"Rebellamentu!" they screamed, the word echoing across the shoreline, across time, across history.

The Messinese and Angevin ships, bearing down on the beach, slowed their advance. The rebel army, small in number but fierce in spirit, stood united under Siciliana's leadership.

In that moment, hope and fear intertwined as one, and Sicily stood on the brink of a battle that would determine its future.

Giuseppe Garibaldi is celebrated as a hero of Italian unification.

That does not make him a hero of Sicily or of Sicilians.

Garibaldi came to Sicily in 1860 at the head of an armed expedition. He landed at Marsala with roughly a thousand volunteers, fought the forces of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, seized control of the island, and proclaimed himself dictator of Sicily in the name of Victor Emmanuel II of Piedmont-Sardinia.

Call him a revolutionary. Call him a nationalist. Call him one of the architects of Italy.

From Sicily’s perspective, he was also a conqueror.

This distinction matters because Italian nationalist mythology often tells the story as though Garibaldi arrived on an oppressed island, “freed” the Sicilians, and delivered Sicily into the nation where it naturally belonged.

That is a political legend, not an adequate history.

Sicilians were already rebelling against Bourbon rule before Garibaldi arrived. The island had a long tradition of resisting rule from Naples, including major revolutions in 1820 and 1848. Another uprising began in Palermo in April 1860, weeks before the Thousand landed.

Garibaldi did not create Sicilian resistance.

He entered an existing Sicilian revolution and redirected its military success toward the larger project of Italian unification under the House of Savoy.

Many Sicilians joined him. Some sincerely believed in Italian nationalism. Others wanted the Bourbons gone. Rural Sicilians also hoped that political revolution would finally break the enormous estates and give peasants greater access to the land.

Those hopes soon collided with reality.

In June 1860, Garibaldi’s government issued measures concerning the division of communal lands, encouraging expectations of agrarian change.

Then came Bronte.

In August 1860, a violent uprising erupted there amid longstanding conflicts over land and class. Garibaldi sent Nino Bixio and his troops to suppress it.

Bixio imposed military rule. A tribunal was assembled. Five men were executed.

Within three months of Garibaldi landing in Sicily as a supposed liberator, Garibaldian troops were shooting Sicilians in the name of restoring order.

That episode alone should make anyone uncomfortable with the sanitized story of Garibaldi as Sicily’s benevolent savior.

The larger agrarian transformation many rural Sicilians hoped for never followed. The latifundia system and the immense social inequalities of the countryside survived unification.

Sicily was then absorbed into the political system being constructed around the Piedmontese monarchy.

The island did not conquer Piedmont.

Piedmont did not join a Sicilian state.

Garibaldi conquered Sicily and transferred control to Victor Emmanuel II. The new Kingdom of Italy inherited the Savoy monarchy, its dynasty, its king, and much of the administrative framework of the Piedmontese state.

For Sicily, unification soon meant a new centralized government extending its authority into taxation, military service, policing, and local administration.

Conscription became deeply unpopular. Fiscal burdens generated resentment. Rural disorder intensified. State repression followed resistance.

Only five years after the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, Palermo erupted in the Sette e Mezzo revolt of 1866. For seven and a half days, insurgents controlled much of the city before Italian government forces crushed the rebellion.

That is a strange aftermath for the simple story of a grateful Sicily joyfully liberated by Garibaldi.

None of this makes Bourbon rule admirable. Sicilians themselves had repeatedly rebelled against the Bourbons.

It means Sicily’s history cannot be reduced to Italian nationalist pageantry.

Garibaldi had his own political objective. He wanted the destruction of the Bourbon kingdom and the incorporation of the south into a united Italian state. He invaded Sicily, defeated its existing government, ruled the island as dictator, and delivered it to the Savoy monarchy.

That is conquest, whatever larger national cause motivated it.

Italian Americans are free to revere Garibaldi as a founding hero of Italy.

They should stop demanding that Sicilians revere him as ours.

Garibaldi was an Italian general who conquered Sicily. He was not Sicily’s hero.

Hidden in plain sight, my hometown of Milwaukee holds a piece of Europe that predates the United States of America itself.

Long before Columbus crossed the Atlantic in 1492, before the New World existed as a coherent concept in the European imagination, stone masons were raising a Gothic chapel in eastern France.

Those stones still stand today.

Not in Paris. Not in Normandy.

But in Milwaukee.

On the campus of Marquette University, the St. Joan of Arc Chapel quietly claims a distinction few American cities can rival: it is widely regarded as the oldest European-built structure in the Western Hemisphere.

And no, that’s not a metaphor.

A Building Older Than the Atlantic World as Europe Knew It

The chapel’s origins lie in early 15th-century France, commonly dated to around 1420.

This was a Europe still shaped by Gothic stonework and candlelit interiors, a world without printing presses, without Protestantism, and before Europe’s global empires took shape. When this chapel was first standing, the Atlantic was still a frontier of rumor and speculation.

Columbus would not sail for another seven decades.

The building was constructed by medieval European craftsmen using period Gothic techniques such as hand-cut stone, ribbed vaulting, and vertical proportions meant to draw the eye upward.

By any architectural standard, it is an authentically medieval European structure.

Its age is not symbolic. It is structural.

From Medieval Sanctuary to Forgotten Ruin

Like countless churches across France, the chapel did not escape history unscathed.

In the centuries that followed, particularly after the French Revolution, religious buildings were damaged, repurposed, or abandoned. This chapel fell into neglect and partial ruin, its stones surviving even as its original function faded.

Yet unlike most medieval ruins, it was not left to disappear.

In the early 20th century, the structure was carefully dismantled and documented, stone by stone, with the intention of preserving the structure itself.

What happened next is where the story leaves Europe entirely.

A Medieval Building Crosses the Atlantic

In the 1920s, the chapel’s stones were shipped across the ocean and reassembled on a private estate on Long Island.

For the first time, a medieval European building, constructed before 1492, stood physically and intact in the Western Hemisphere.

Decades later, after a fire destroyed the surrounding château but spared the chapel, the structure was donated to Marquette University. Once again, it was dismantled. Once again, it traveled.

Between 1965 and 1966, the chapel was reconstructed in Milwaukee using its original medieval materials wherever possible, supplemented only where structurally necessary.

This was not a replica, not a stylistic imitation, not a romantic Gothic revival.

It was the same building, continuing its life on another continent.

Why the Claim Matters and Holds Up

Calling it “the oldest European-built structure in the Western Hemisphere” is not a semantic trick. It is a precise historical statement.

The chapel was not built in Wisconsin before Columbus. It was built in Europe before Columbus, and now exists, intact, in the Americas.

Among European-built structures standing in the Western Hemisphere today, none are known to originate earlier in Europe. Its age is embedded in its stones, its proportions, its vaulting, carried across centuries and oceans.

That makes it unique.

Joan of Arc and Historical Memory

The chapel bears the name of Joan of Arc, a figure who lived in the same historical moment from which the building emerges.

While traditions suggest she may have prayed in a chapel of this type during the years surrounding 1429, that connection remains part of historical memory rather than definitive documentation.

But the association is fitting. The chapel belongs unmistakably to her world. A world of faith, conflict, and conviction carved in stone.

A Medieval Survivor in an American City

Today, the chapel stands quietly amid lecture halls and walkways, still consecrated, still used, still alive.

Older than Milwaukee.

Older than the United States.

Older than Europe’s first step into the Atlantic world.

The call to prayer echoes from the minarets above the Sicilian city’s shimmering bay. The air smells of jasmine and seawater.

And within the high walls of 𝘢𝘭-𝘒𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘪̄𝘴𝘢, the “Chosen City,” beats the heart of one of the most sophisticated courts in the medieval Mediterranean.

This was Arab Palermo…the jewel of the Islamic West.

And at its center stood the Emir’s palace: an entire district unto itself, with gardens, fountains, mosques, baths, treasuries, and prisons. All enclosed within walls so high that the rest of the city could only imagine what life was like inside.

But today, we’re not walking through the throne halls or the audience chambers.

We’re stepping deeper inside, to the most private space of all...

The 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘪̄𝘮.

Now, before your mind drifts to images of 19th-century Orientalist art, let’s be clear, the 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘪̄𝘮 was not a den of sensual luxury.

It was a family institution, a sanctuary, a world within a world.

In Arabic, 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘪̄𝘮 comes from the same root as 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘢̄𝘮, meaning sacred, protected, inviolate.

This was where the women of the household lived, including the emir’s wives, daughters, and sometimes concubines, all attended by handmaidens and guarded by eunuchs whose loyalty was beyond question.

Behind carved lattice windows and arched loggias, they lived surrounded by art, gardens, music, and learning.

In many ways, the Palermo 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘪̄𝘮 mirrored those of Kairouan and Mahdia in nearby Ifriqiya (modern Tunisia), the political heart of the Fatimid world.

Sicily was not a distant province, it was part of a vibrant North African network.

And the Kalbid rulers who governed from Palermo modeled their courts, their architecture, even their household structure on the great Fatimid palaces of the Maghreb.

Now, we don’t have direct chronicles describing the daily life of Palermo’s harem women.

No diaries or letters survived, but the clues are there...

In the 10th century, the geographer Ibn Ḥawqal described Palermo’s palatial quarter: its baths, its private gardens, its administrative halls, and the great water channels that cooled the air.

The palace was a microcosm of Islamic civilization itself. Half fortress, half paradise.

And we know the tradition continued long after the Arab rulers were gone.

When the Normans conquered Palermo in 1072, they didn’t dismantle this world, they inherited it.

In fact, they preserved much of it.

A century later, the Andalusian traveler Ibn Jubayr visited the Norman court of King William II.

What he saw shocked him: Muslim concubines and eunuchs still serving in the palace, Arabic still spoken in the royal chambers, and the customs of the 𝘩̣𝘢𝘳𝘪̄𝘮 still alive under Christian kings.

Imagine that.

A royal household in Christian Europe where Arabic poetry was sung at night and Muslim women tended the royal gardens of the Zisa and the Cuba, those dreamlike palaces that still stand today.

The harems of Palermo didn’t disappear. They evolved, adapting to the rhythms of new rulers, new faiths, new languages.

Their courtyards, filled with fountains, banana leaves, peacocks, and doves, were spaces of refinement and privacy, of beauty and intellect.

Women in silk robes would walk beneath carved arches, their laughter echoing through marble halls cooled by the sound of flowing water.

And though their names are lost to us, their legacy is not.

It lives in the architecture of Palermo itself, in the mosaic geometry, the Arabic inscriptions, the scented gardens that inspired the word 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥—𝘑𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭-𝘈𝘳𝘥̣, the “Garden of the Earth.”

So when we speak of the harems of Palermo, we’re not speaking of decadence. We’re speaking of a civilization’s inner sanctum, where faith, family, and art converged.

A world that was hidden, yes, but not silent.

Its echoes still linger in the arches of the La Zisa, in the gardens of La Cuba, and in the soul of the city itself.

That is the true story of the harems of Palermo.

Not of captivity, but of continuity. Not of fantasy, but of heritage.

A whisper of the East, preserved in the heart of Sicily.
