Today, we wanted to take a minute to break down some of the most competitive governors’ races we’re watching – and explain why investing in the DGA is one of the most strategic decisions you can make right now. Take a look:

Arizona

Democratic governor Katie Hobbs is up against Republican Congressman Andy Biggs, and recent polling shows Hobbs ahead by just one point.

Races in Arizona often come down to the wire, and this is sure to be no different. When Gov. Hobbs won in 2022, this was the closest race for governor in the country, and then Arizona was the swing state that Trump won by the largest margin in 2024.

Gov. Hobbs has delivered over and over again for Arizona – focusing on lowering costs and eliminating more than $1 billion in medical debt for people in her state. We can’t – and won’t – let that progress be rolled back in November. Chip in here to help Gov. Hobbs defeat Andy Biggs and support the DGA.

Nevada

We have a real chance to flip the governor’s seat in Nevada, as Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford faces Republican governor Joe Lombardo in the toughest race for any Republican incumbent governor.

A recent poll showed a tied race despite Republicans spending tens of millions against AG Ford. The poll also showed that voters are frustrated with Lombardo’s refusal to stand up to Trump. That’s going to be a tough image to shed, given that Lombardo has even called Trump his “commanding officer.”

Lombardo’s proven over and over again that he’d rather cater to Trump than help the people who elected him. In just a few weeks, Nevadans will get their chance to replace him – and you can chip in to help Aaron Ford and the DGA here.

Michigan

In Michigan, Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson faces two-time statewide loser John James.

As governor, Benson will tackle corruption, lower the costs of health care, housing, and energy, and stand up to Trump when he threatens Michigan families. Meanwhile, James has already sided with Trump and voted to raise costs and rip health care away from hundreds of thousands of people in his state.

At the moment, polling shows a single-digit race. But here’s the good news: Every candidate Trump has endorsed for statewide office in Michigan has LOST over the last decade. We look forward to ensuring the streak continues.

Wisconsin

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley just became the Democratic nominee in Wisconsin, and the latest polls show him narrowly leading his opponent, Republican Tom Tiffany, in this very competitive race.

But we can’t (and won’t) take anything for granted. Tiffany has already spent millions of dollars boosting his own campaign and now that the general election is underway, that spending could just be the tip of the iceberg. It’s up to us to make sure Crowley has the resources to fight back and reach voters in the final weeks before Election Day. You can help by splitting a contribution between his campaign and the DGA.

Ohio

Dr. Amy Acton is in a strong position to become Ohio’s first Democratic governor in decades. Even a recent Fox News poll showed a two-point race between her and her opponent, failed presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

But winning this race is not going to be easy. While Dr. Acton is focused on making life more affordable for Ohioans, Ramaswamy and his allies are more focused on spreading attacks – spending millions blanketing Ohio televisions with misleading ads.

This race is winnable – but it’s going to require an all-hands-on-deck effort to ensure we flip this seat and prevent Ramaswamy from wreaking havoc in Ohio. Contribute here to help make sure we win here and throughout the country.

Iowa

Democrat Rob Sand has turned the Iowa governor’s race into a toss-up.

Sand will have to convince a significant portion of Republicans or independents to win the governorship, but as Iowans are hurting from a decade of one party rule and extreme attacks on public education, poll after poll shows that voters are ready to make a change.

Meanwhile, Sand’s opponent, Republican Zach Lahn, has made headlines for spending most of his time in Kansas. Another poll shows that 76% of respondents say it’s important to them to have a governor who has spent most of their adult life in Iowa. That could be a big problem for Lahn come November.

Georgia

Political forecasters are calling the Georgia governor’s race a toss-up, and for good reason.

Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms has a track record of helping Georgians: As Mayor of Atlanta, she attracted major employers and new jobs to the state, delivered a historic raise for police officers and firefighters, and secured significant investments that gave small businesses a boost.

Perhaps that’s why she’s led in several recent polls. But Georgia is one of the most competitive states in the country and we haven’t elected a Democratic governor here in decades. Meanwhile her opponent, Rick Jackson, seems more focused on Trump than on the people of his state, saying that he wants to be Trump’s favorite governor and that he doesn’t disagree with Trump on anything. Here at the DGA, it’s our job to ensure the Democrats in these races – and beyond – have the resources they’ll need to break through Republicans’ attacks and ensure their message reaches undecided voters in these final weeks.

Every month, the DGA sets ambitious fundraising goals. They aren’t just raising money for the sake of it – every dollar raised has a real purpose: Electing Democratic governors across the country.

And as the only committee dedicated to electing Democratic governors, it’s the DGA’s job to allocate the money they raise to support candidates running for governor, from Iowa to Arizona and beyond. This year, there are 36 governors’ races on the ballot, meaning their fundraising goals are very high as they work to win multiple toss-up races.

The money the DGA raises makes a massive difference on the ground. When candidates face an onslaught of attack ads from their opponents, having support from the DGA can help them fight back. When candidates need staff, having the DGA’s support can help them build their team. When candidates face a media environment flooded by Republicans’ hundreds of millions, the DGA’s support means they can get their message out there. And with time running out before early voting begins, having the money to reach more voters and scale volunteer operations can literally make or break the election, no matter the state.

It’s one thing to have experts and polling saying that Democrats can win these races, but it’s another to have the resources to back it up.

And to be honest, we are running out of time to build and deploy those resources.

But getting here wasn’t easy, and it certainly didn’t happen by accident.

That’s why today, as we celebrate Women’s Equality Day – and commemorate the 106th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote – I want to take a minute to share my story, explain how the DGA is expanding the number of women serving as governor of their states, and talk about why their work is so important, especially right now.

When I first ran for office, a lot of people told me not to do it. Some said I was too young. Others said the timing wasn’t right. More than a few told me that a woman couldn’t win. But I knew why I was running. I believed in what I stood for, and I refused to let cynicism make decisions for me.

Every day, there are women across the country who are told the same things I was. These are women who experience the worst impacts of this administration’s cost-raising agenda, and who are raising their hands to do something about it. They’re ready to lead their states forward – and with the DGA’s help, they’ll have the resources to do it.

In 2018, the DGA started the Women Governors Fund, a fundraising initiative dedicated to supporting Democratic women running for governor across the country. Since the fund began, the DGA has raised and spent more than $120 million to support women running for governor. That money makes a massive difference, and it will again this November.

This fall, we’ve got four female Democratic governors running for re-election, and many more amazing women running to flip or defend offices in their states. That includes Jocelyn Benson in Michigan, Dr. Amy Acton in Ohio, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Deb Haaland in New Mexico, Cindy Holscher in Kansas, Gina Hinojosa in Texas, and Cyndi Munson in Oklahoma.

These are races we can WIN – but only with your help.

Trump knows his corrupt agenda is deeply unpopular among voters. So he is doing everything he can to stack the odds in his favor, including trying to dismantle voting by mail ahead of November’s elections.

But here’s the good news: We’re fighting back.

The DGA is going back to court to fight back against this latest ploy to make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. And this isn’t the first time: In April, we sued Trump as soon as he signed his Executive Order unlawfully limiting vote by mail. Last year, we sued Trump over his Executive Order attempting to take control of our elections from the states – we even beat him in court. And we will take him back to court as many times as it takes to protect Americans’ right to vote.

But I’ll be honest with you: With less than 70 days until Election Day, Trump’s latest attacks on the right to vote could have a very real impact.

Let’s start with Iowa. 76% of Iowans say it’s important for their governor to live in the state. That could be a problem for Republican nominee Zach Lahn, who has been living in a mansion in Kansas for years and has gone to great lengths to hide his residency from voters, traveling back and forth to campaign stops on a private plane. Don’t worry, though, Lahn promises to “move to and live in” Iowa and “be in Iowa as much as humanly possible” if he wins the governor’s race in November.

In Alabama, Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville has coached football and represented his state in the Senate, but it doesn’t seem to be his primary address. Tuberville’s official Senate travel records show a LOT of trips in and out of Florida, where he and his wife own a $5.6 million beach mansion. Tuberville voted in Florida AFTER he claims he moved to Alabama. He wasn’t even on the deed for his Alabama home until 2024, when he laid the groundwork to run for governor. And after all of that, he still leaves Alabama behind for Florida’s beaches.

And Lahn and Tuberville aren’t alone. Across the country, Republican candidates for governor are stretching the limits of how much time they can spend out of their state. In Ohio, Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy spent roughly 40% of the first half of 2026 out of the state, jet setting across the U.S. and even outside the country — celebrating 4th of July with a trip to Paris, France.

In Maine, Republican nominee Bobby Charles has branded himself as a Mainer, but left when he grew up, spending most adult life in Washington D.C. as a lobbyist and political insider. He didn’t move back to Maine until 2022.

Voters across the country want leaders who understand the issues facing voters – because they face the same issues every day. It’s Courtney Weisman, legal counsel for the Democratic Governors Association, and I’m here with an urgent update: Donald Trump recently signaled that he’s willing to declare a national security emergency in an attempt to take over our elections.

Trump is getting more and more desperate by the day.

But if there’s one thing I know, it’s this: Donald Trump is beatable.

Democratic governors have taken Trump to court dozens of times to protect the voting rights of the people in their states – and they’ve won. And they’re not stopping there. Here at the DGA, we are actively suing to protect vote-by-mail, and in the lead-up to Election Day, we’re focused on ensuring we have the aggressive legal operations necessary to counter Trump’s voter suppression tactics, no matter what he tries to throw our way in these final weeks.

The bottom line is this: Our team at the DGA – alongside Democratic governors across the country – will do whatever we can to protect voters’ rights as they cast their ballots.

So I have to ask: If protecting our fundamental right to vote is worth $5, $20, or even $100 to you, can you make that contribution to the DGA today?

Let’s be honest: When most people think about political power, they think about Washington. The president. Congress. The Supreme Court. We get it. There’s a lot happening there.

But while everyone is refreshing their news feeds to see the latest out of D.C., some of the most consequential decisions affecting our everyday lives are being made in state capitals across the country. And at the center of many of those decisions? Governors.

So, what can a governor actually do?

That veto pen is a pretty big deal.

Let’s start with one of the biggest powers governors have: They can sign bills into law – or stop them with a veto. That means when an extreme bill reaches a governor’s desk, the person sitting behind that desk matters. A Democratic governor is often the last line of defense, stopping harmful legislation before it becomes law and blocking extreme legislation that threatens our communities.

For example, Gov. Katie Hobbs has vetoed hundreds of extreme bills in Arizona, while Gov. Tony Evers has vetoed harmful anti-LGBTQ legislation in Wisconsin and used his veto power to extend school funding increases for 400 years – that’s year 2425.

But governors aren’t just playing defense. They can also sign legislation that lowers costs, strengthens public schools, expands access to health care, protects reproductive freedom, creates jobs, and delivers for working families. Same desk. Same pen. Very different outcomes depending on who’s holding it.

Governors can shape the courts, too.

Here’s one you might not think about as often: In many states, governors play a role in selecting judges – including filling vacancies on their state’s highest court.

Why does that matter? Because state courts can decide some really big questions: voting rights, reproductive freedom, elections, workers’ rights, criminal justice, and the rights guaranteed under state constitutions. We spend a lot of time talking about the U.S. Supreme Court – and for good reason. But don’t sleep on your state Supreme Court.

They’re actually running the state.

Governors are chief executives. They oversee state agencies, help set budgets and policy priorities, make key appointments, issue executive orders, and lead their states through emergencies and disasters.

In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has led the state to repair over 25,000 miles of roads and over 2,000 bridges. In Washington, Gov. Bob Ferguson recently expanded access to the state’s disaster cash assistance program to support those impacted by the state’s devastating wildfires.

Think about how much of everyday life intersects with state government: Schools. Roads. Health care. Public safety. Elections. Jobs. Infrastructure.

That’s real power – and it has real consequences.

And yes, they can take on Trump.

As the Trump administration pushes policies that threaten Americans’ rights, health care, economic security, essential services, and voting, Democratic governors and Democratic-led states aren’t powerless. They can fight back. And they are.

For example, recently, twenty-three Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C., sued the Trump administration over his executive order targeting mail-in voting, arguing it unlawfully infringed on states’ authority to run elections. The DGA also filed a separate challenge alongside the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, and Democratic congressional leaders, arguing Trump exceeded his legal authority.

Governors across the country have gone to court to challenge the Trump administration, adding another line of defense against federal overreach. That’s part of what makes Democratic governors so important in this moment: When Washington creates chaos, governors still have a state to run. When an administration overreaches, states can challenge it. And when people need someone fighting for them, Democratic governors can use the power of their offices to do exactly that.

Now multiply all of that by 36.

This November, 36 governors’ races are on the ballot. That’s 36 races that will help determine who signs the bills, who holds the veto pen, who makes critical appointments, who sets the agenda, who protects our rights, who delivers for working families, and who is willing to stand up when Donald Trump goes too far.

That’s why governors’ races can’t be an afterthought in 2026.

The White House isn’t on the ballot this November. But across the country, voters have an enormous opportunity to decide what kind of leadership they want closer to home. Every Democratic governor we elect is another leader who can protect progress, deliver results, and fight back when Washington threatens the people they serve.

So yes, keep paying attention to Washington. But you might want to start paying a little more attention to the governor’s office, too.

Because one of the most important offices in American politics might be the one you weren’t watching.

First: Trump called on Republican governors across the country to rig their congressional maps in the GOP’s favor ahead of the midterm elections. But he didn’t stop there. He also signed illegal executive orders that undermined mail-in voting.

Then: The Supreme Court – now stacked with Trump’s hand-picked MAGA justices – completely kneecapped the Voting Rights Act in their 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, paving the way for MORE Republican-led states to gerrymander their maps.

Justice Elena Kagan even called the ruling the “latest chapter in the majority’s now-completed demolition of the Voting Rights Act.”

Now: Trump is ramping up his attacks on voting rights and demanding the Senate pass the SAVE Act – a controversial GOP bill that could disenfranchise over 70 million voters, including over 60 million married women who have changed their last names – in yet another attempt to make it more difficult for Americans to participate in elections.

It’s blatantly obvious: Donald Trump and the GOP know that their failing policies are extremely unpopular, and the only way for them to win this November is if they rig the system in their favor.

This onslaught of attacks against voting rights is arguably the most dangerous threat our democracy has ever faced – but thankfully, Democratic governors across the nation are leading the fight to protect voting rights for every American.

Gov. Gavin Newsom spearheaded the fight to protect voting rights in California, passing the Election Rigging Response Act to add 5 congressional seats for Democrats in response to Texas following Trump’s orders to redraw maps to favor Republicans.

In Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro boasts a 43-0 record against Donald Trump in court over Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, refusing to let Trump’s election denying conspiracy theories undermine the will of PA voters.

In Arizona, Gov. Katie Hobbs has never stopped fighting to protect Arizona’s free and fair elections – safeguarding voting rights as Governor and expanding access to the ballot for every eligible Arizonan as Secretary of State.

And here at the Democratic Governors Association, we’re refusing to bend the knee to Trump – suing, and winning – when he signed an illegal executive order to restrict mail-in voting.

Donald Trump is doing everything he can to undermine and dismantle free and fair elections in our country. It’s a threat to our democracy, and the best way to stop him is to elect governors who will stand in his way. That’s why it’s never been more important to elect Democratic governors – like Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, and Katie Hobbs – who are dedicated to this fight

As we reflect today on the progress the Voting Rights Act has brought to our country – the progress that Trump is so desperately trying to erase – we can honor its legacy by fervently working to elect Dem govs in the 36 races this November and beyond. But that’s all changed. In 2026, no matter where you turn, it’s hard to miss Democratic governors fighting for their states – and winning. While during the first Trump administration we had 15 Democratic governors, we now have 24 – and those 24 represent nearly 200 million Americans, or almost 60% of the country. That includes governors in states north and south, east and west, big and small. It includes blue states like New York and red states like Kentucky.

And it's not just about numbers on a map. It's about what those numbers mean for people. Americans look to Dem govs for solutions, and for hope – because Dem govs are the leaders that our party needs right now. From coast to coast, our governors are protecting their people from Trump's chaos, lowering costs for working families, and securing big wins every single day, from free school lunch and universal child care to fixed roads and canceled medical debt.

None of that happens by accident. This is the result of hard work, not just by those hard-fought campaigns in the states, but also by the DGA. The DGA works closely with our governors to get their winning messages out, both through our own channels and with help and support from strong state parties, passionate people on the ground, and grassroots Democrats following along at home.

But that work doesn’t stop with our incumbents. With governors’ races every November, there are no off years at the DGA – so we’re constantly learning, refining, and planning.

2025 already showed us what’s possible: We’re hot off two historic wins in New Jersey and Virginia with the elections of Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger, turning our number of women Dem govs into a record TEN. And we’re not slowing down – we’re looking forward to 36 more races in just a few short months.

It’s a big number – but we like our odds. Americans are tired of Republicans who put Donald Trump and their own special interests first. They’re tired of the chaos in Washington. They’re tired of broken promises. And they’re tired of endless rising prices, from the grocery store to the gas pump.

Wherever I go, I hear from Americans who are excited to elect leaders who are laser-focused on their states – not themselves – like Rob Sand in Iowa or Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia. And I promise them: the leaders that they’re looking for are Dem govs.

We’ve got 36 governors’ races in 2026.

That’s 36 chances to lower costs and improve lives.

36 chances to bring bold solutions to more Americans.

And 36 chances to show Americans what a Dem gov can do.

And Trump is not alone. Across the country, Republican candidates for governor are backing his election denying claims. If they win their races this fall, they will influence future elections in the swing states that will determine the winner of the 2028 presidential race. The Election Deniers

• In Arizona, Congressman Andy Biggs just won the Republican primary. Biggs was one of the architects of the January 6 insurrection, and later defied a subpoena and asked Trump for a pardon for his attacks on our democracy. As Gov. Katie Hobbs put it on MSNOW: “If Andy Biggs is governor, Arizona is the first swing state with an election denier in charge.”

• In Michigan, Republican John James is running for governor – another GOP Congressman sucking up to Trump by denying the results of the 2020 election. In a recent debate, he even attacked his fellow Republicans for not going far enough in denying the results, and got brutally fact-check by the debate moderator – take a look:

• In Pennsylvania, Stacy Garrity is the GOP’s nominee, and has a long history of lying about Trump winning the 2020 election. She has even gone so far as to praise the violent rioters who assaulted police officers during the Jan. 6 insurrection — saying she was “proud of our Patriots.”

• In Wisconsin, Congressman Tom Tiffany voted to overturn President Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania and Arizona, and said that he would have voted to overturn Wisconsin’s election results if a vote had been held. Wisconsin is a critical battleground state for 2028, and if Tiffany is in charge it could have serious implications for our election.

Here’s the bottom line: Donald Trump’s cost-hiking agenda is extremely unpopular. Voters know it, Trump knows it, and so do his Republican allies. That’s why they’re doing whatever they can to rig November’s midterms in their favor – redrawing congressional maps, making voting harder for millions of Americans, laying the groundwork to question election results when they lose, and more.

Dem Govs won’t let them get away with it. In Arizona, Governor Katie Hobbs has stopped Republican-backed voting restrictions and defended the state’s free and fair elections against MAGA-driven conspiracies. In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro has already won 43 times in court against Trump and his allies, defending free and fair elections against Republican attempts to undermine the will of the people. In states like these and beyond, we must elect Democratic governors who will make sure voters – not extreme Republican politicians – decide the results of our elections.

Donald Trump and his allies have an extreme agenda that is making life harder and more expensive every day – and doing everything in their power to restrict our fundamental freedoms.

But Democratic governors know how to fight back, and the DGA has the record to prove it.

That’s why it’s so important we not only defend our blue firewall of Democratic governors, but flip as many more offices as we can this fall. I’ve been traveling all over the country to get out the vote for our amazing roster of candidates, and here’s what I’m seeing on the ground:

• I recently joined Rob Sand on the trail in Iowa – and he’s turned this race into a toss-up. As state auditor and Iowa’s former chief public corruption prosecutor, he has spent his career going after scammers and bad actors. Now, he’s running to be governor for the people of Iowa – and based on the energy of the crowd I saw, I believe we can win Iowa in November.

• I also stopped by Nevada, where Aaron Ford is running a strong race against Joe Lombardo, the most vulnerable governor on the map. After barely winning in 2022, Lombardo has spent his term backing Trump’s cost-raising agenda and even defended Trump’s tariffs saying Nevadans need to “feel a little pain.” Meanwhile, Attorney General Ford is running to rebuild Nevada’s economy, lower the cost of housing and prescription drugs, and create good-paying jobs. While I was in Nevada, I heard directly from voters who are ready for new leadership – and I know that’s exactly what AG Ford will deliver. • In Ohio, former state health director Dr. Amy Acton is a great nominee who could very well be on her way to being the state’s first Democratic governor in two decades. Her number-one priority is securing a tax cut for Ohio’s working families – a sharp contrast to her out-of-touch, billionaire opponent Vivek Ramaswamy, whose agenda would drive costs even higher. I recently campaigned with Dr. Acton in Cincinnati, and if the energy on the ground is any indication, we have a real chance to flip this seat.

• And in Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms has already rolled out plans to lower health care costs and protect the state’s rural hospitals. We recently held a roundtable discussion centered on her plan to expand Medicaid and bring affordable care to more Georgians – which would change the lives of so many. In her race, she’s taking on another out-of-touch billionaire Rick Jackson, who’s said he wants to be Trump’s favorite governor. Trump and his allies are laser-focused on Georgia – even holding a rally there last week – and we are, too.

On top of the states where we’re on offense, we’ve got a long list of Dem Govs who have been holding the line and doing important work for their states, and whose seats we’ll need to defend in November – including Katie Hobbs in Arizona, Josh Shapiro in Pennsylvania, JB Pritzker in Illinois, Tina Kotek in Oregon, Wes Moore in Maryland and more.

We are also working hard to protect the legacies of so many great Democratic governors who are leaving office, like Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan, Tim Walz in Minnesota, Michelle Lujan Grisham in New Mexico, and Janet Mills in Maine.

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us. But I am living, breathing proof that Democrats can win anywhere, and we should be fighting everywhere. With your help, that’s exactly what we’re doing.
