Miami has always been very good at reinvention, and, like the mangroves that were here before development, perhaps a little less disciplined about deep roots of what came before. My relationship with the Design District began in 2008, when Odabashian moved into the Buena Vista Building just as we were beginning our own transformation from a traditional rug business into one focused on hospitality, architecture and design. We later moved into a loft nearby that remained our principal place of business for nine years. From there, we watched the neighborhood change around us, from the showrooms, studios and warehouses of the old Design District into one of the most ambitious concentrations of architecture, fashion and design in the country.

There was another Miami immediately behind it, however, and it was always the part that fascinated me. Buena Vista is one of those neighborhoods where the city suddenly changes scale. Old houses sit beneath enormous royal Poincianas, vegetation grows with the confidence that comes from having been there for decades, and the streets retain something of an older, less manicured Miami. Today you can walk out of a luxury boutique in the Design District, cross a few streets and find yourself underneath a canopy that seems completely indifferent to everything that has happened around it.Ya et

Perhaps I notice these things because Miami is, and will always be, home. My family’s business history was deeply connected to Mexico, and my father and grandfather conducted much of their lives in the Mexican Spanish of their world. Yet the strange truth is that Cuban Spanish is the sound that makes me feel at home. I have spent enough of my life here that its cadence, humor, contradictions and constant reinvention have become part of my own vocabulary. I love Miami precisely because it never seems completely resolved. There is always another layer underneath the one you think you know.

That history made returning to the Design District for The Moore particularly meaningful. Here was a new private members club being created inside a century old building, at the center of a neighborhood that had become a showcase for contemporary Miami. The owners and interior designers wanted something sophisticated and new, but they also understood that The Moore could not feel as though it had simply landed there. A building that has survived a hundred years deserves a conversation with its surroundings.

Our instinct was to look beyond the building and into Buena Vista. Working with longtime Miami artist Johanna Bocardo, she explored the foliage, shadows and organic forms of the neighborhood and began translating them into artwork. We championed that idea with the designers and ownership from the beginning. Rather than reach for another interpretation of tropical Miami, we wanted the rugs to carry something much more specific into the club: the visual memory of the neighborhood immediately outside its doors.

That became the strength of the work. Johanna’s observations became drawings, the drawings became textiles, and the vegetation of Buena Vista found its way into the interiors of The Moore. In one of the most significant new hospitality projects Miami has seen in recent years, our contribution was not about inventing another version of the city. It was about paying enough attention to discover the one that was already there.

There is something wonderfully circular about that for me. Nearly twenty years ago, I arrived in this neighborhood with a family company that was searching for what it might become. I spent years exploring the Design District while it was doing much the same thing. Eventually I took the company to Little Haiti, and both of us continued changing. To return years later and help shape The Moore meant seeing this familiar corner of Miami with different eyes.

That may be the privilege that comes with exploring a place for long enough. At first you are interested in where it can take you. Eventually you begin to care about what you can carry forward from it.

The Design District will continue changing. Miami certainly will. I hope it does. But behind all that movement, Buena Vista is still there, its old houses shaded by trees that have watched generations of Miami come and go. Some of those leaves now live inside The Moore.

For a Rugman who has spent most of his life wandering this city, I can think of few better ways to come home.

This week I received great news from my friend, Little Wing Lee who is the founder and principal at Studio & Projects. Her architecture and design studio is located in Brooklyn and our work history goes back to when she worked for a large, well known hotel brand. Like many of my long-term clients, the professional relationship quickly becomes friendship as we discover cultural and aligned perspectives on how we conduct business, how aesthetics and design influence culture.

She called to give me the news of the recent acquisition of one of our collaborative rugs by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The rug is currently in one of their first design exhibitions:

RESET - ABSTRACTION EMBODIED IN DESIGN.

After we discussed it, we spoke briefly about a very exciting opportunity to expand the original Okra project to a very visible and prestigious exhibition next year.

Before long, we found ourselves doing what we have always done best: talking about the ideas behind the work rather than the work itself.

The original installation of Okra, presented during New York Design Week at the Ace Hotel in Brooklyn, explored the journey of a plant that crossed the Atlantic with enslaved Africans before quietly becoming part of the foundation of Southern American cuisine. It was never conceived as a botanical study. Instead, it examined the ways culture survives displacement, adapting to new landscapes while preserving traces of where it came from. Looking back on the project, however, I realised that the most significant idea behind it emerged not from the history of the plant, but from a conversation that seemed, at first, entirely unrelated.

While we were developing the rug, Little Wing began describing the language of braided hair across many West African traditions. She patiently explained to me that hairstyles carried meaning far beyond appearance. They communicated family, clan, culture, community and place, preserving identity through patterns that were learned, repeated and passed from one generation to the next. Hair became a receptacle of information, woven not for decoration but for recognition, continuity and memory.

As she described these traditions, I found myself thinking about the weaving workshops that have shaped my own life. Although separated by continents and entirely different histories, they seemed to be answering the same cultural question. Across Persia, the Caucasus and Central Asia, identity has long been preserved through woven motifs, colors and techniques transmitted from one generation to the next. In many West African cultures, especially the ones that brought their cultural legacy to the Southern US, memory followed another path. It travelled through braided hair. One tradition wove identity into wool, the other into human hair, yet both had independently discovered that memory could be preserved through weaving. The materials were different, but the instinct was remarkably familiar.

That realisation became the conceptual foundation of Okra. The project was no longer simply about the human transportation of a plant. It became an exploration of the remarkable ways in which cultures that have no apparent connection very often arrive at the same solutions for preserving identity.

Once we recognised that connection, the fringe became an opportunity to extend the story. I asked Little Wing where she had her braids done and whether she would send me photographs the next time she visited the salon in Brooklyn. When they arrived, I forwarded them directly to our master weavers in India with an unusual request. Rather than finishing the kilim with a conventional fringe, I asked them to study the braid itself and reinterpret it using two colours of yarn, allowing the edge of the rug to carry the same narrative as the field.

Several weeks later the first samples arrived from India. What the weavers produced was not a literal reproduction of the hairstyle but a thoughtful translation of it. They instinctively understood that the request was not about copying a braid. It was about recognising another tradition of making and expressing it through the language they knew best. Somewhere between a salon in Brooklyn and a weaving workshop thousands of miles away, one form of craftsmanship had found its distant kin.

The braided fringe occupies only a few inches at either end of the rug and can easily escape notice, yet it remains my favorite part of the entire project. Not because it demonstrates technical virtuosity, but because it reminds me that the most meaningful design decisions are often invisible. They begin in conversation, take shape through curiosity and ultimately become part of an object without ever drawing attention to themselves.

Thinking back on that recent conversation, I realised that we had spent remarkably little time discussing the Smithsonian acquisition itself. Recognition is gratifying, but museums ultimately preserve the result of an idea, not the moment when the idea first appeared. The conversation that gave Okra its meaning had taken place years earlier, somewhere between Brooklyn and a weaving workshop in northern India, when two people from entirely different traditions discovered that they had both inherited cultures that chose weaving as a way of remembering.

Perhaps that is why I continue exploring, but not in search of rugs, but in search of the conversations that explain them. Every workshop, every artist’s studio, every museum and every construction site offers another opportunity to discover that cultures separated by oceans have often been asking exactly the same questions, simply with different materials in their hands.

This time, the answer to that question was quietly resting on the head of my friend.

There is only one flag in my rug studio.

It is neither framed nor displayed on a pole. Instead, it hangs exactly as it has for as long as I can remember: a small Farsi-baff hand-knotted rug woven near Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Measuring little more than three feet in length, it is hardly a museum piece. During those years, Pakistani workshops were producing some of the finest commercial rugs in the world. Richly coloured Bokharas had become enormously popular in the United States, prized for their exceptional wool and their remarkable ability to complement almost any interior. This particular rug, however, was something of an anomaly. Instead of geometric guls or floral medallions, its entire field was occupied by the Stars and Stripes. Old Glory.

My father brought it back from one of his buying trips more than forty years ago, and from the day it arrived it became the only flag that ever hung inside one of our showrooms. It was there in our original store in Boca Raton when I was growing up, and today it hangs in my studio in Miami. I never thought to ask him why he chose to display it. Children rarely question the objects that quietly become part of the landscape of their lives. They simply assume they belong there. Only years later, when those same objects have outlived stores, offices and even generations, do they begin to reveal the stories they have been carrying all along.

For most of my life, I regarded it simply as an unusual rug. It was only after returning from several weeks travelling through Europe that I began to think about it differently. I had spent much of that journey visiting family-owned hotels, many of them still operated by the families who had built them generations earlier. Watching those families speak about stewardship, succession and continuity made me realize how different our own story had been. Continuity was never something we inherited. It was something we had to recover, more than once.

My grandfather, Khoren Odabachian, did not leave the Ottoman Empire in search of opportunity. Like so many Armenians of his generation, he left because history gave him no other choice. Had he remained, there would almost certainly have been no family business to inherit, no reputation to preserve and, quite possibly, no family at all. Mexico became the place where our story began again. In 1921, he founded what would eventually become Odabashian in Mexico City, building the company patiently through craftsmanship, relationships and an unwavering commitment to quality. By the time my father assumed responsibility for the business, it must have seemed that the uncertainty defining my grandfather’s generation had finally given way to something more permanent. The family had survived, the company had survived, and for the first time it appeared that the future could be shaped by hard work and competence rather than circumstance.

That confidence proved temporary. The economic crises that overtook Mexico during the late 1970s and early 1980s fundamentally altered the environment in which businesses like ours operated. We were subjected to Exchange controls, import restrictions and byzantine fiscal regulations. Incompetent bureaucrats implemented policies designed to conserve foreign currency made importing handmade rugs nearly impossible. Rugs were classified as luxury goods at precisely the moment our business depended upon importing them. The future of our family business no longer depended primarily upon the quality of our products, the relationships we had spent decades cultivating or the decisions we made ourselves. It depended upon bureaucratic forces entirely beyond our control.

When my father and his brother purchased a small rug business in Dania Beach in 1979, and our family followed him to Florida a few years later, we were not simply opening another showroom. We were beginning the third chapter of a family story that had already crossed two continents. Looking back after more than four decades in the United States, I have come to believe that the greatest gift this country gave our family was not prosperity, although we have been fortunate enough to experience it. It was something far more fundamental: a stable framework in which success or failure would depend primarily upon our own judgment, discipline and perseverance. Markets would rise and fall, competitors would come and go, tastes would change and recessions would inevitably arrive, but those were the ordinary risks of commerce. For the first time in our family’s history, the rules themselves were stable enough that the future of our business would be determined principally by our own competence rather than by genocide, political upheaval, currency controls or the arbitrary decisions of a government deciding whether the products we made and sold deserved to exist.

That realization has stayed with me since returning from Europe. I spent weeks surrounded by businesses that had survived for centuries because successive generations accepted the responsibility of preserving what they had inherited. Our family’s journey was different. We did not inherit continuity. We earned it repeatedly, first by surviving, then by rebuilding, and finally by finding a country whose institutions allowed us to discover what every family business ultimately hopes to discover: whether the next chapter will be written by the character and ability of the family itself rather than by the accidents of history.

Today, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary, I will look once again at that small rug hanging in my studio. For years I thought it was simply an unusual souvenir from one of my father’s buying trips to Pakistan. Today I see it differently. It reminds me that our family’s story began in Armenia, found new life in Mexico and ultimately flourished in the United States. It reminds me that while ancestry shapes our identity, institutions shape our possibilities. Most of all, it reminds me that the greatest tribute I can offer the country whose flag hangs on that rug is to ensure that the opportunity it gave our family is honored in the only way that ultimately matters: by building a business worthy of passing to the next generation.

Jaime Odabachian - the Rug Man

Over the last few days, I found myself returning repeatedly to the videos emerging from Barcelona during the ceremonies surrounding Pope Leo’s visit to the Sagrada Família. The footage was extraordinary, not only because of the scale of the occasion but because it allowed the building to be seen in its natural state. Not as a tourist destination, not as an architectural icon, and certainly not as a backdrop for someone’s tik-tok dance, but as a functioning cathedral filled with music, ritual, and people. Watching the children’s choirs sing beneath those impossibly tall columns, with the light moving through the stained glass and across the stone, I was reminded of something I have gradually come to appreciate about Barcelona over the last decade.

My relationship with the city has evolved considerably over the years. Like most travelers, I was initially captivated by the obvious things: the architecture, the food, the Mediterranean energy, and of course Gaudí himself. But after enough visits and contextualizing with local family and dear Catalan friends, the focus shifts. What began to interest me was not the architecture in isolation but the culture that produced it. One of the reasons I have always felt drawn to Barcelona’s design scene is that its roots are surprisingly practical. Much of the city’s design identity emerged from maritime commerce and industry rather than from purely artistic pursuits. Walk through El Born and you can still feel traces of that history. This was a city of merchants, shipbuilders, metalworkers, craftsmen, and traders whose livelihoods depended on designing objects that had to function in the real world. Hardware, fixtures, tools, lighting, ceramics, furnishings, and countless other objects evolved through use, refinement, and necessity. Beauty emerged from competence. Design was not decoration. It was applied knowledge.

Perhaps that is why the recent images from the Sagrada Família resonated so strongly with me. Looking at the cathedral during the ceremonies, I was struck by the realization that what people around the world were reacting to was not merely the building itself. After all, the building has been standing there for years. Millions of people have photographed it. Entire libraries have been written about it. Yet something about these images felt different. They seemed to remind people that the cathedral is not an artifact. It is evidence.

For generations we have grown accustomed to speaking about cathedrals, guilds, workshops, and traditional crafts as though they belong to a closed chapter of history. We admire them in much the same way we admire antique maps or old navigational instruments. They are beautiful remnants of a world that appears increasingly distant from our own. Yet as I watched the ceremonies unfold, I found myself thinking that perhaps we have misunderstood the situation entirely.

The Sagrada Família is not a monument to a lost capability. It is proof that the capability survived.

Construction began in the nineteenth century and continues today. During that span, generations of architects, engineers, sculptors, stone carvers, craftsmen, donors, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens have all participated in a project whose completion many of them would never personally witness. The knowledge was transmitted. The skills were transmitted. The institutions survived long enough to carry the project forward. The public remained invested. The culture maintained enough confidence in the endeavor to continue supporting it decade after decade.

Gaudí’s famous observation that his Client was not in a hurry has always been interpreted as a statement about faith, but watching these recent events I began to see it differently. It is also a statement about time. Certain undertakings only become possible when a society accepts that the horizon extends beyond a single human life. The cathedral was never designed to satisfy the demands of a quarterly report, a political cycle, or even the ambitions of a single generation. It was designed to be inherited.

What made the recent moment so fascinating was watching the wider world recognize this, consciously or otherwise. The images traveled far beyond religious audiences. Architects shared them. Designers shared them. Engineers shared them. Historians shared them. Even Elon Musk, whose public life is devoted to some of the most technologically ambitious projects on earth, found the cathedral worthy of amplification. That detail struck me because it revealed something important. The appeal of the Sagrada Família is not nostalgic. People are not celebrating it because it is old. They are celebrating it because it demonstrates a capability that remains profoundly relevant.

As I watched those videos, I kept returning to a simple image discussed with my closest advisor: Somewhere in the back of a cupboard sits an object covered in dust. It has not been discarded because it failed. It has not become obsolete. It has simply been neglected because our attention moved elsewhere. Then one day someone pulls it from the shelf, wipes away the dust, and discovers that it still works exactly as intended.

The Sagrada Família feels like one of those moments.

Not because the cathedral itself was forgotten, but because it reminds us that long-term thinking, intergenerational craftsmanship, patience, institutional continuity, and collective ambition were never lost. They were simply waiting for us to notice them again. And judging by the response from Barcelona over the past week, millions of people did.

For a brief moment, the world was reminded that some things become more valuable precisely because they take longer to build.

The Rug Man

At this very moment, somewhere in India, there may still be a police officer standing guard over a half finished palace size rug destined for one of the most prestigious hotels in Miami Beach.

This is not a metaphor.

For the past nine months, we have been weaving two enormous lobby rugs for a major hospitality project. Each piece measures roughly ten feet by forty feet, dimensions so large that within the rug industry they belong to a category of their own. We simply call them palace size rugs. They are the kind of pieces that eventually disappear into the visual memory of a hotel. Guests will walk across them while carrying luggage, recovering from long flights, closing business deals, arguing quietly with spouses, escaping winter, escaping themselves. Most will never stop to think about where such objects actually come from.

The answer, more often than not, is not a pristine factory full of robotic precision and silent machinery. It is usually something far more human.

One of these rugs was being woven inside a family compound in Northern India that forms part of a weaving network which has worked with Odabashian for more than forty years. The relationship itself now spans generations. The father who originally worked with my father decades ago slowly passed the operation into what has now become a multi sibling weaving enterprise, with several families living and working around the same compound and loom structures.

This is still how many of the great hand knotted rugs of my company are made.

A loom capable of producing a palace size rug becomes almost architectural in scale, and over time life itself begins organizing around it. Meals are cooked nearby. Wool dries in the sun. Children do homework beside the loom. Relatives arrive unannounced. Cricket matches play loudly in the background while thousands upon thousands of knots continue accumulating by hand.

And, inevitably, family dynamics unfold.

At some point during the weaving process, some sort of domestic disagreement erupted within the compound. I never learned the exact details, nor am I really interested. Families are families in every country on Earth. What I do know is that the disagreement escalated enough that local authorities became involved. The police arrived, the property was temporarily seized while the matter was investigated, and with it access to the half finished rug itself.

So for a brief period of time, one of the largest and most luxurious rugs currently being produced for Miami Beach hospitality was effectively trapped inside a family argument on the other side of the world.

I could not help but laugh when I received the phone call explaining the delay.

Because hidden inside the absurdity of the situation is something strangely beautiful and deeply honest about handmade work.

The luxury world often presents itself as seamless perfection. Marble without scratches. Linen without wrinkles. Lighting calibrated to the emotional temperature of wealth. Everything designed to feel detached from ordinary life.

Yet many of the objects that create those environments emerge directly from ordinary life itself.

The rug is not woven outside of life. Life is happening around it continuously. Weddings, illnesses, gossip, electricity outages, monsoon rains, celebrations, reconciliations, financial stress, laughter, exhaustion, and occasionally police investigations all unfold around the loom while the work quietly continues knot by knot.

And somehow all of that enters the piece.

Perhaps that is why handmade rugs belong so naturally inside hotels.

Hotels themselves are temporary emotional containers. Places where people arrive carrying ambition, loneliness, celebration, betrayal, hope, exhaustion, lust, reinvention, and occasionally happiness. Beneath all of that sits a woven object produced within another theater of human life thousands of miles away.

In this particular case, quite literally.

Thankfully, the family dispute has now been resolved, the police have departed, and the weaving has resumed. The rugs will soon continue their journey toward Miami Beach, where guests, and surely the hotel owners, will likely never imagine that the carpet beneath their feet was once temporarily detained as part of a domestic investigation in rural India.

Which somehow feels entirely appropriate.

After all, the best handmade objects do not emerge from perfection, but from humanity itself.

My mother sent me a short interview with a curator speaking about a 2023 exhibition at Tate Modern featuring the work of Magdalena Abakanowicz.

From that small gesture, an entire line of thought opened.

In the last Substack, the conversation moved from the nanometric precision of ultraviolet lithography to the grounded logic of the loom. It was a question of translation across scales. How something invisible becomes something inhabitable.

Now, with Abakanowicz, the equation changes again. Not smaller. Not larger. But interior.

Her works were not tapestries. Not sculpture, at least not in the traditional sense. She named them Abakans, deliberately drawing from her own name, as if language itself had to be rewoven to accommodate what she had made. Not objects. Not categories. Something closer to entities.

This is a rare act. To produce work that does not fit into an existing taxonomy, and to claim authorship not only over the work, but over its classification. It is not innovation in the decorative sense. It is ontological. A new species enters the room.

And they do not sit politely on the wall.

They hang. They fold. They open like membranes. They surround the body. They insist on presence.

There is a reason the curator at the Tate described them as heroic. Not because they are large, although they are. Not because they are complex, although they are that too. But because they confront the fundamental question of scale from the position of the individual.

Abakanowicz did not inherit scale from architecture. She built it from herself.

Thread by thread.

This is where the distinction becomes clear.

The Abakans are not expressions of fragility. They are assertions.

They do not ask for sympathy. They establish presence.

Heroism, in this context, is not spectacle. It is authorship. The decision to create without precedent, and to stand behind what is made.

That is what gives the work its force.

And this brings the thread back to the last Substack.

At one end, machines at ASML shape reality at a scale beyond perception. At the other, the loom organizes matter at the scale of the hand. Abakanowicz extends that logic further, constructing spaces that confront the body directly.

Different tools. Same impulse.

To take control of scale, and through it, to define a world.

The difference is where the risk sits.

In Abakanowicz’s case, the risk is personal. There is no mediation. No abstraction. Only the act of making, and the decision to name it.

That is why the work feels the way it does.

Because it carries something fundamental.

The artist standing in front of the unknown, and proceeding anyway.

Not as a victim of circumstance, but as its counterforce.

And perhaps that is why it feels so out of step with the prevailing tone of the present. Pathetically, much of contemporary art discourse frames the world through the binary of oppressor and oppressed, where authorship is often diluted by position. Abakanowicz offers a different posture. Not denial of history, but refusal to be reduced by it. She recenters the axis on the self, where creation becomes an act of confrontation, not explanation.

The result is unmistakable.

Work that does not ask to be understood through context alone, but through presence.

Work that meets fear directly, looks it in the eye, and holds its ground.

Recently, I found myself in Mexico City for what appeared to be a straightforward task: the creation of a second company. On paper, it is a procedural exercise. In practice, it is something closer to a maneuver. Thanks to the current anti-business governing attitude towards formal commerce in Mexico, operating a business there today requires a level of byzantine redundancy that goes beyond logistics, and the structure of it must be designed accordingly. The mechanics are simple. The thinking behind them is not.

The moment where it becomes interesting is the naming.

In Mexico, a company does not begin with a single name. It begins with five. These are submitted to the Ministry of Economy, filtered, and only one is allowed to exist. The others are discarded, as if they never held weight. Five names for one identity. Most people treat this as a formality. We treated it as an opportunity.

My father and I built those names in Armenian.

Not as a gesture. Not as nostalgia. As function.

To anyone outside, they read as unfamiliar sounds, assembled with a certain rhythm but without clear meaning. Within the family, they are exact. Some carry references that go back generations. Others are deliberately constructed signals. All of them operate within a shared understanding that does not require translation. The name becomes more than a label. It becomes a layer.

And at that point, the exercise stops feeling contemporary.

It begins to feel inherited.

Armenian trade networks, particularly those centered around New Julfa in Isfahan, but extending across a vast commercial geography from Manila to Bombay, and into European and Mediterranean ports such as London, Marseille, Barcelona, and Beirut, have been extensively documented both in their reach and in their internal mechanics. These were not theoretical routes. They were active systems, moving goods, capital, and information across environments that were rarely stable and often adversarial (just like 21st century Mexico).

They did not rely on the consistency of external institutions.

They built internal ones.

Language was central to that structure. Trade was conducted in Armenian. Records were written in Armenian script. Correspondence moved within a framework that preserved clarity and control regardless of where the transaction took place. To those outside the network, it was opaque. To those inside, it was precise.

Not secrecy for its own sake.

Continuity.

Sitting in a notary’s office in Mexico City, proposing five names that would never be fully legible to the outside world, it became clear that the distance between those systems and this moment is shorter than it appears. The tools have changed. The instinct has not.

A company name, in this context, is not branding. It is structure. It defines how a business is seen, but also how it holds itself together under pressure. It is a boundary between what is public and what remains controlled.

And in certain environments, that boundary matters.

There is a quiet satisfaction in recognizing this pattern as it unfolds. Not because it feels clever, but because it feels continuous. A reminder that the mechanics of trade, when they are well built, do not disappear. They adapt, reconfigure, and reappear exactly where they are needed. Even with an aggressive, intolerant or ignorant state attempting to shake you down.

The names will be approved, one will survive, and the company will begin its formal life like any other.

But beneath it, there is another layer.

One that has been in motion for much longer.

I was at a friend’s house last weekend in a super cool house in the Grove. A birthday. Nothing formal. The kind of gathering where conversations drift without intention.

He is an ocean engineer, working between research and teaching at the University of Miami. His world is currents, pressure, the invisible forces that move entire bodies of water. The kind of work that operates at scales most of us never perceive. The crowd was as “ocean-academic Miami” as one could imagine: Atmosphere researchers studying hurricanes, engineers working at NOAA creating next gen buoys deployed across the oceans. All interesting people at the top of their intellectual fields.

Somewhere in the evening, I met a man named Riko.

A PhD in in electronics and solid-state devices and semiconductors. He is a veteran of the early days. He studied computer engineering when the field still had edges. Seventies, eighties. Built systems when computation was still something you could almost hold in your mind. Now semi-retired, writing techno-thrillers.

We started talking.

At some point, the conversation moved toward the machines being built today. The ones that fabricate the future. The work of Dutch ASML came up. These systems operate at a level that is difficult to even describe without sounding imprecise. They fire lasers at droplets of tin, generating plasma that emits light at wavelengths so small they allow matter to be etched at the scale of atoms. Entire architectures of logic, billions of transistors, written into silicon with a degree of control that feels less like engineering and more like inevitability.

It is, by any measure, unfathomably complex.

And yet, sitting there, the contrast became obvious.

On one side: machines operating at the nanoscale, fabricating the infrastructure of artificial intelligence.

On the other: my work.

Wool. Cotton. Wooden looms. Steel tools that cut yarn. Hands repeating gestures that have not meaningfully changed in centuries.

As analog as anything can be.

For a moment, it feels like these two worlds have nothing to do with each other. That they exist on opposite ends of a spectrum that will never meet.

But that’s not quite right.

Because both are doing the same thing.

They are organizing matter into systems of meaning.

One compresses information into spaces too small to see. The other expands pattern into a scale the body can inhabit. One is invisible unless mediated by machines. The other insists on presence, on texture, on time. Communion.

And somewhere between the two, there is a continuity.

Not of technology, but of intent.

The desire to structure the world. To encode something into it. To leave behind an order that can be read, whether by a processor or by a person standing still long enough to look.

It made me wonder whether these worlds are not in opposition, but simply operating at different resolutions of the same idea.

From silicon to wool.

From signal to substrate.

Lately I have been thinking a great deal about hospitality

Part of that is simply the nature of my work. My company makes rugs, and the places where our work lives are hotels and resorts. Many of the most interesting new projects in the Americas are unfolding along the Pacific coast of Mexico, in Los Cabos, along the Riviera Nayarit, and deeper in the jungles where a new generation of architects is building spaces designed to receive travelers with care and imagination.

When you spend time inside those environments, you begin to notice something fundamental. A rug is rarely just decoration. It marks a place of arrival. A threshold. A room that has been prepared for someone who was not there before.

The thought keeps returning to hospitality. In some ways it feels like the natural habitat of what we do.

Around the same time I found myself thinking about a cow.

More precisely, the quiet confidence behind the cover of Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd. A single animal standing in a damp English field. No title. No explanation. Just presence.

The image works because it leaves space.

And when space appears, a deeper question follows. What fills it?

For most of human history the answer has been remarkably consistent.

Hospitality.

Long before institutions, markets, or modern states appeared, societies discovered a simple rule. The stranger must be received properly. Water offered. Bread shared. A place to sit given without hesitation.

In the ancient world this was not etiquette. It was infrastructure.

Across the cultures that formed the great arteries of exchange between East and West, hospitality became the first signal that one had entered civilized territory. A traveler moving across Persia, Anatolia, Armenia, the Levant, or Central Asia might not know the language of the next village, but one gesture was universally understood.

The guest is under protection.

That principle quietly supported the enormous commercial network we now call the Silk Road. Caravans crossed deserts and mountain passes because the next settlement, the next caravanserai, the next household understood the obligation to receive the stranger. Trade required trust, and trust began at the threshold of a home.

Without hospitality there is no trade.

And without trade there is no Silk Road.

I have seen this code in practice many times. In northern India and Pakistan, and across societies of the Levant, the arrival of a guest triggers a choreography that feels ancient. Chai (a word for “tea” across the entire Eurasian landmass) appears almost immediately. Chairs shift. Plates multiply. Conversation expands to make room for the visitor.

And it hardly matters whose home you happen to enter. Armenian cousins, Izmir-Miami transplants, Maronite Lebanese-Miami Cubans, Arab clients in Doha, and Persian-American clients in L.A., the pattern repeats itself with remarkable consistency. Different languages, different histories, different religions perhaps, but the instinct is the same. A guest is not treated as an inconvenience or a passing transaction. The guest becomes a responsibility, almost a temporary member of the household.

It feels older than etiquette. Closer to instinct.

For those of us raised within the cultural inheritance of Anglo Protestant America, the contrast can be striking. The Anglo tradition developed on an island where privacy and distance evolved differently. Boundaries became a form of politeness. Hospitality certainly exists, but it often arrives through invitations, schedules, and careful planning.

In the societies shaped by the Silk Road, the stranger historically represented something else entirely. Not disruption, but possibility. A bearer of news, goods, and connections from somewhere beyond the horizon. The doorway of a house functioned almost like a small diplomatic frontier between worlds.

Open the door properly and the road remains alive.

Close it and the road goes silent.

The more I think about it, the more hospitality begins to look like one of the earliest technologies of civilization, just like using woven animal hair under your bare feet. Not decoration. Not luxury. A mechanism that allowed strangers to move safely across enormous distances.

A rug placed on the floor. Bread on the table. A guest seated inside the circle of the house. These gestures appear simple, but they made the Silk Road possible.

Civilization begins, in a very real sense, when the stranger stops being a threat and becomes a guest.

Last Friday the world of art lost one of its most singular spirits, Pedro Friedeberg.

I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to the Friedeberg family and especially to Alex Sordo who worked alongside Pedro for many years and helped steward the extraordinary universe that surrounded him.

Our collaboration began in 2015. From the first visit it was immediately clear that spending time with Pedro would never resemble working with any ordinary artist. Entering his home and studio felt less like arriving at a workplace and more like stepping inside a living cabinet of curiosities.

Every surface contained something unexpected.

Wind up toys. Mechanical objects. Sculptures that seemed to exist somewhere between archaeology and dream. Small visual jokes hidden in corners. Shelves full of strange small and large companions that looked as though they had been quietly observing the room for decades.

It was impossible not to wander.

One could easily lose an hour simply moving from shelf to shelf discovering small wonders that revealed the peculiar logic of Pedro’s imagination.

One visit in particular remains unforgettable.

We had just delivered a series of rugs fabricated for him to the studio. They were the rugs Pedro had designed for the first series we ever produced together titled “Leccion de elegancia y sofisticación”. It remains one of my favorite collaborations we ever realized together. The name of the collection stemmed from a joke he made to my father about what he thought an Odabashian rug signaled for “las Señoras de Las Lomas” (the posh ladies of the western, elegant and expensive neighborhoods of Mexico City). In the 1970s when Pedro first began his career, many of the houses in that neighborhood, whose owners were also Friedeberg collectors, had Odabashian rugs in them and they signaled a “flex”.

As the rugs were unrolled on the studio floor Pedro and Alex introduced us to the newest companion. A cat he had named Wikipedia. The name alone seemed perfect for a man whose mind functioned like an encyclopedic archive of references symbols and playful contradictions.

The rugs had barely touched the floor before Wikipedia claimed one of them as her personal territory.

Claws out and completely committed to the task.

Any rug maker watching a hand woven rug that required nine months of patient labor immediately repurposed as a scratching post would experience a moment of quiet distress..

Pedro simply observed the scene.

He smiled slightly tilted his head and made one of his perfectly offhand remarks about Wikipedia. There was no irritation in his voice. Only curiosity and amusement. As if the cat attacking the rug was simply another surreal event unfolding in the quiet theater of everyday life.

That was Pedro.

Working with him and with Alex remains one of the highlights of my career. There are artists who produce objects and there are artists who produce worlds. Pedro unquestionably belonged to the latter category. Collaborating with him meant translating a piece of his strange and beautiful imagination into material form and allowing it to exist in the physical world.

Those visits to his studio remain vivid in my memory. Walking through that room filled with toys sculptures drawings and improbable inventions felt like stepping into a mind that never stopped playing.

And that playfulness was not trivial. It was a philosophy.

Pedro reminded us that curiosity and imagination are not childish qualities. They are the engines of creativity itself.

To his family his friends and to everyone who had the privilege of entering his remarkable universe I offer these words:

May his memory be a blessing.

My daughter asked me which album cover I loved most

.

It was not an idle question. It came from a university assignment on visual culture. A formal exercise. The kind of prompt that requires you to examine an object not for nostalgia but for structure, for language, for meaning.

There is something quietly significant about that. A record sleeve that once circulated in the margins of counterculture now appears inside a syllabus. The object has crossed the threshold from rebellion to canon. That crossing alone deserves attention.

My first answer was immediate. The Dark Side of the Moon. The prism remains one of the most disciplined visual statements ever printed on cardboard. It behaves. It communicates. It compresses physics, modernism, and metaphor into a single, legible gesture.

But later, another image displaced it.

A cow.

In 1970, at the height of psychedelic saturation, Pink Floyd released Atom Heart Mother with no band name on the front, no title, no cosmic typography. The image, conceived by Hipgnosis, was simply a British Friesian standing in a field under a pale English sky. The cow’s name, almost as an afterthought, was Lulubelle III.

At a moment when album art functioned as manifesto, this was refusal.

The early seventies were negotiating visual authority. Psychedelia had matured into expectation. Covers signaled transcendence before the needle touched vinyl. Identity was broadcast through color, distortion, symbolism. The surface instructed the listener how to enter the sound.

Pink Floyd chose subtraction.

No instruction.
No framing device.
No attempt to choreograph interpretation.

Just presence.

The cow does not perform. She stands. Slightly turned, mildly curious, largely indifferent. She neither promises revelation nor mocks it. In that stillness there is confidence.

This was not emptiness. It was authorship through restraint.

The thought sharpened for me in Mexico City.

We had just exhibited the Milton Glaser rugs at Zona Maco. To stand beside Glaser’s work was to revisit the same decade from another geography. New York in the nineteen seventies was negotiating clarity and persuasion. Glaser understood modernism intimately. He refined it, humanized it, gave it civic warmth without surrendering structure. His visual language was confident, articulate, generous.

If Glaser represents the mastery of communicative modernism, Lulubelle III represents its disciplined counterpoint. One clarifies. The other withholds. Both are acts of control.

Somewhere between my daughter’s assignment and the exhibition floor in Mexico City, the informational thread aligned itself. The question was not which cover I preferred aesthetically. The question was what those images meant at the moment they were made.

The prism declares.
The cow refrains.

Both emerged from a decade wrestling with identity.

To remove your name from the cover while your audience expands is not modesty. It is composure. It suggests that recognition need not constantly reassert itself. The image trusts its own gravity.

In our own disciplines, whether textiles, architecture, or design, the temptation is to over explain. We annotate process, heritage, sustainability, innovation. We label before the object has time to occupy space.

Lulubelle III occupies space without commentary.

The fact that this conversation began as a university assignment matters because it signals how visual rebellion matures into cultural language. What once disrupted expectation is now studied as structure. Standing at Zona Maco, reflecting on Glaser’s New York and Pink Floyd’s England, it became clear that the nineteen seventies were less about stylistic excess and more about authorship. Who controls the surface. Who determines how much meaning is declared and how much is withheld.

The cow in the field endures because it was a deliberate decision made inside a culture saturated with spectacle. It trusted the viewer. It left space. And in doing so, it demonstrated that restraint, when executed with confidence, can carry as much authority as any symbol rendered in full color.

I spent the morning in the Seybold Building in Downtown Miami in the old jewelry district. It is a place I have been visiting since I was a child, usually following my parents or accompanying a relative who needed something very specific and very valuable.

The building still carries that unmistakable Miami charge. There’s a peach-colored Lamborghini SUV at the valet stand, Solid gold faces of Christ with diamond crowns of thorns tracking you from the windows. Bitcoin pendants heavy enough to feel absurd. Cuban chains encrusted with stones so large they seem to challenge gravity itself. Everything is loud, physical, excessive, and at the same time entirely sincere.

Miami-style.

What struck me this visit was not the spectacle. It was the realization that I had been here before, just in another trade.

The Westechester (Miami) -born Cuban jeweler we visited laughed as he described the daily dramas that unfold in the elevators and hallways:

“Todos los dias, meng!”, he says. Someone owes stones. Someone insists a watch is worth more than it is. Someone is trying to move inventory they should not be moving. Voices rise, hands gesture, alliances shift. And the next morning, everyone is back in business.

Suddenly I was ten years old again, walking through rug dealers shows in New York and Atlanta with my father.

It was the same energy. The same tensions. The same theatrical negotiations that are half commerce and half performance. Different objects, identical dynamics.

These are Silk Road ecosystems.

Not metaphorically. Literally.

The diamond and jewelry trade has always belonged to the same families, tribes, networks, and geographies that once moved silk, carpets, spices, and precious metals across continents. Hasidic dealers in Antwerp. Jewelers in Istanbul. Traders in Isfahan, Karachi, Beirut. Ashkenazi Jews, Arabs, Sephardic Jews, Armenians, Turks, Maronite Lebanese. Often competitors. Often collaborators. Always bound by reputation, memory, and trust. Only, here, those “tribes” have Havana, Santa Clara, Hialeah, Antioquia (Colombia), or Lower East Side/Brooklyn English accents.

What survives is not only the trade. It is the culture.

Afterward, we sat down to eat at Motek. It is presented as Israeli food, but anyone familiar with the region knows it is Levantine. Shared dishes with shared origins. The kind of food that belongs in markets where deals are sealed slowly, over conversation, mint tea and a handshake, not paperwork.

That is when it fully clicked.

In a 1920s office building in downtown Miami, surrounded by 1970s elevators and fluorescent lights, the Silk Road is still alive. Not as nostalgia. Not as heritage. As a functioning system. Trade is conducted face to face. Disputes handled socially. Reputation carrying more weight than contracts. Food, gesture, and language doing as much work as money.

These ecosystems do not disappear. They migrate.

They reappear wherever trade concentrates, wherever trust matters, wherever objects carry both material and symbolic value. Rugs. Diamonds. Gold. Watches or a 5-inch diameter, diamond encrusted face of Our Savior attached to a Cuban chain worth a seized Venezuelan oil tanker. Same breath, different century.

The Seybold Building is not an anachronism. It is a living artifact.

And if you listen closely, beneath the clink of chains and the loud Cuban-spanish volume of negotiations, you can still hear the Silk Road breathing.

I found the rug at the top of a pile in our family storage, folded among others that had accumulated over decades. These were not rugs kept as inventory, but pieces my father had collected and lived with since the late 1960s. When I unfolded it, the image was immediately clear: a five-clawed imperial dragon suspended in clouds, fully intact and unmistakable in its intent.

Five claws. Not four. Not stylized. Five.

I called my father.

He knew exactly what it was. He explained the meaning without hesitation. The five claws signified imperial authority and heaven sanctioned power. In China, iconography like this was never casual. It was precise language. You either understood it or you stayed away from it.

Then he told me where it came from.

This rug had been circulating in our family long before I had the vocabulary to understand it. My father had been collecting since the late 1960s, gathering not just objects but fragments of a much larger story. He told me that my grandfather, Koren, worked with Chinese producers associated with Ting Sing and earlier still with Nichols, an American firm operating in China before the Communist Revolution, commissioning rugs for Western homes using deeply classical Chinese aesthetics.

That detail stopped me.

Because the rug in my hands was not ancient in the literal sense. It was woven around the end of the 1970s. And yet everything about it pointed backward deliberately and with conviction.

By the time this rug was woven, China had just emerged from a period when its own cultural inheritance had been treated with deep suspicion. The Cultural Revolution attempted to reorder society by severing it from its past. Symbols that had carried meaning for centuries were flattened or rejected. Much was lost. And much more survived quietly.

Culture, it turns out, is difficult to erase.

Within a few years of reopening, Chinese weavers and designers began cautiously reintroducing imperial dragons, cosmological clouds, and classical visual language into commercially available rugs for Western markets. This was not nostalgia. It was continuity. A recognition that what had endured for millennia still carried authority. Recognizing Truth, the Western decor market responded accordingly.

The dragon at the center of this rug is not aggressive. It is attentive. It is fixed on the pearl.

In Chinese symbolism, the pearl represents Truth and ultimate reality. The dragon does not chase it. It guards it and animates it. Power here is not domination but alignment with virtue.

What is striking is how closely this mirrors the dragon in Western mythology: From St George to Quetzalcoatl. In the West, the dragon guards treasure. It represents danger, meaning, and responsibility all at once. Something to be confronted, respected, and prepared for. Across cultures, the dragon marks the threshold where truth demands courage.

That is why this rug matters now.

At a moment when cultures once again feel pressure to flatten themselves, simplify their histories, or trade depth for slogans, the dragon reappears as it always does. As a reminder that truth is guarded, not given, and that civilizations endure not by erasing their symbols but by remembering and honoring them.

As Christmas approached this year and business wound down, I found myself returning to The Godfather, the way one returns to something familiar and enduring. Like a piece of music you grew up with, or a book that has been sitting on the shelf for years. You don’t go back to it looking for surprises. You go back because it knows you, and because every time you return, you notice something you were not ready to see before.

By the time I reached Part II, the moment that stayed with me was not the violence or the mythology, but a small domestic exchange early in Vito Corleone’s life, before he becomes anything resembling a public figure.

After Clemenza entrusts Vito with hiding a bag full of guns in his home, Clemenza insists on repaying the favor. This insistence is gentle, but firm. In Sicilian culture, and really in any culture where family matters deeply, favors are not casual, they create bonds. And bonds need to be answered properly, not extravagantly, but meaningfully. Then, Clemenza tells Vito he will get him a rug for the house.

Vito resists. He says rugs are for rich people. What would he do with a rug? The response feels honest, almost modest. Vito does not yet imagine himself as someone who owns things meant to last. He is still focused on getting by, on keeping food on the table, on the immediate demands of life. Then, Clemenza presses, calmly. Not for you, he says. For your wife. For your family, and that is where the scene quietly opens up.

A rug is not about luxury. It is about intention. You lay down a rug when you believe a home is no longer temporary. When you imagine children playing on the floor. When you imagine guests sitting, talking, staying a little longer. A rug assumes a future. Later, when the rug is finally laid out, little Santino is placed on it.

The image is simple, but it carries weight. The child is placed on something prepared for him before he understands it. Before Sonny inherits his violent temperament or destiny, he inherits solid ground. The rug becomes the first quiet inheritance, something already there, waiting.

Mario Puzo understood this instinctively, and Coppola honored it by not explaining it away. They knew that families are not built through declarations or ambition, but through small domestic decisions that signal permanence. You furnish a home differently when you believe it will hold the people you love for years to come.

In many families, rugs outlast almost everything else. Homes change. Furniture comes and goes. Life moves forward. But the rug stays, absorbing footsteps, conversations, arguments, laughter. It becomes part of the family without ever calling attention to itself.

Seen during Christmas, this moment takes on an added warmth. Christmas is not about expansion or conquest, it is about gathering, about shelter, about making space. Before institutions, there is a household. Before authority, there is responsibility. Before legacy, there is a floor where a child can be placed safely.

Clemenza does not elevate Vito. He supports him in the most practical way. He helps him make a home.

For me, as someone who has spent a lifetime around rugs, this scene feels deeply familiar. A rug is not decoration. It is a foundation. It marks the moment when a family decides to settle, to grow roots, to build something meant to outlast those who witness.

And just like those Sicilians, civilizations that endure are not built loudly or quickly.
They begin quietly, from the floor up.

Before bedrock, there is sediment.
Before institutions, there are signals.

Last week I wrote about sediment; how ideas, gestures, materials, and habits accumulate quietly until pressure turns them into something solid. Miami is often misunderstood because people search for its monuments too early. The city is young. Its architecture is recent. Its myths are still forming. But its signals especially its sonic ones have been accumulating for decades.

One of those signals lived at “The Voice” 90.5 FM.

Between the mid 2008 until around the arrival of Spotify, nearly everyone I knew in Miami had WVUM programmed into their car audio on the first memory slot. Not because it was fashionable, and not because it was curated for mass appeal, but because it was how you found things. This was the in-between era: post-CD dominance, pre-Spotify omnipresence. MP3s existed, but discovery was fragmented, slow, and often legally awkward. Algorithms hadn’t yet decided what you loved.

So you listened.

And if you listened long enough, you eventually arrived at Vamos a la Playa.

Laura Sutnick’s show didn’t announce itself as a movement. It didn’t brand itself as a scene. It simply broadcasted, week after week, a very specific, highly personal mix of dance music and house in its loosest, most adventurous sense. It was playful, sometimes cheesy, sometimes hypnotic, and unmistakably hers. At the time, it didn’t fit neatly into any prevailing category, which is exactly why it mattered.

It’s also important to remember when this was happening.

By the time Laura’s program had fully embedded itself in the city’s consciousness, Miami had just passed through the 2008 financial collapse which was one of the most violent South Florida (and global) boom-and-bust implosions in its recent history. Entire condo developments went dark. Towers stood finished but empty, like abandoned stage sets. The speculative optimism of the early 2000s evaporated almost overnight.

If you owned a business, you weren’t recalibrating, you were surviving. Many people I knew went from two dozen employees to four in a matter of months. Entire professional classes vanished. Whole office complexes sat empty. There was no romance in staying. No clear upside. What remained was a thinner, quieter city.

And those who stayed were not the opportunists.

They were the stubborn. The rooted. The slightly unhinged. The ones who either couldn’t leave, or refused to. In retrospect, it resembles what Detroiters often describe about their own city: the culture wasn’t preserved by those who left and later returned. It was forged by those who endured the quiet years, the psychological aftershock of a place stripped of its illusions.

Miami went through its own version of that trauma.

In that environment, Vamos a la Playa functioned as more than a radio show. It was continuity. A reminder that taste still mattered. That joy hadn’t been canceled. That curiosity, humor, and internationalism could still exist in a city temporarily reduced to shadows and silence.

What made the program special wasn’t just the music, it was the context. A student-run station. A live broadcast. A wounded city. No safety net of archives or playlists. If you missed it, you missed it.

That fragility created attachment.

The sounds Laura played, drawn from disparate scenes, eras, and geographies, weren’t being rediscovered yet. They weren’t circulating as nostalgia or revival. They existed simply as music, carried by FM waves, absorbed in real time. A generation internalized that sensibility long before it had language, labels, or validation.

Years later, many of those sounds would be repackaged, categorized, and platformed. But for many of us in Miami, they were already embedded, not as trend, but as memory.

Cities don’t remember through buildings alone.
They remember through frequencies.

If Miami today is beginning to assert itself as more than a backdrop, as a city with internal logic, taste, and cultural gravity, it’s because of small, persistent contributions like this. Signals that didn’t ask permission. Voices that didn’t chase validation. Programs that kept going while everything else paused.

This is what sediment does.

So then, “GRACIAS”🙏🏻 from the Rug Man to Laura of Miami for providing the soundtrack to one of the city’s most difficult, formative, and quietly defining chapters. For broadcasting curiosity before it was monetized. For reminding a wounded city how to listen before it learned how to speak again.

Bedrock doesn’t form overnight.
It forms because someone keeps showing up, week after week, on the same frequency.

Last week I was speaking with a client whose family has been hand-making shoes in León, Guanajuato for nearly a century. Anyone familiar with Mexican craft understands what León represents: it’s not just a place, but an entire ecosystem of knowledge, technique, and tradition. His family has spent decades studying European shoemaking: Italian, English, Spanish. They know the machinery, the lasts, the construction methods. In theory, they could replicate an Italian shoe right down to the stitch.

And then he said something that stayed with me long after the conversation ended:
“Even when we make it perfectly, there’s always something Mexican in it.”

Not as a flaw.
Not as a deviation.
As a signature.

That line resurfaced yesterday as I found myself reading about Farrokhroo Parsa, Iran’s first female cabinet minister, a woman whose life carried an uncommon degree of intelligence, dignity, and personal courage. As I studied a photograph of her ceremonial attire, I found myself absorbed not by the politics, but by the design: the medals reflecting a European tradition; the garment itself blooming with the unmistakable botanical vocabulary of Persia. A modern uniform carrying within it the memory of Tabriz, Kerman, and centuries of ornamentation.

Two different worlds:Guanajuato and Tehran.
Two different crafts: shoemaking and ceremonial dress.
And yet the same phenomenon: place asserts itself.

Culture seeps through technique, even when technique is imported. The hand remembers what the land taught it.

This thought inevitably brought me back to Miami and, more broadly, to South Florida. I was brought here by my parents in the early 80s, and have spent over four decades watching this region invent itself. When I arrived, Miami still felt like a place in formation. And yet, even then, something powerful was being broadcast into the world: Miami Vice.

People forget—especially the new arrivals, that Miami Vice wasn’t just a television show. It was a cultural detonator. It defined the global imagination of the city long before Miami had the architectural or institutional infrastructure to define itself. The colors, the pastel palette, the music, the kinetic glamour: all of it etched a visual identity onto Miami’s skin before Miami even fully understood what it wanted to be.

And here’s the part that fascinates me:
that aesthetic, born on a television set, still shapes the subconscious identity of the city today. Most people living here now have no idea. They arrive into a place whose visual DNA was assigned, in part, by a piece of 1980s pop culture. But the influence remains. It’s in the light. In the palette. In the way the city tolerates boldness. In its relationship with futurism, glamour, and risk.

Over the decades, Miami has matured far beyond the show that mythologized it. But its aesthetic gravity remains. And somewhere along the way, I realized that gravity was shaping me, too.

I see it in the artists I collaborate with.
In the palettes I choose.
In the way I think about rhythm, scale, cultural optimism and experimentation.
For years, I thought I was simply evolving in my tastes. Now I understand the city has been imprinting itself on me in return.

We speak often about global design, about influences traveling freely, about the supposed flattening of culture. But some things resist flattening. Geographic instinct, especially in the realm of aesthetics, remains deeply local.

A shoemaker in León can replicate Florence, but León whispers through the leather.
Farrokhroo Parsa’s European-style medals rested on a garment blooming with the botanical language of Persia.
And Miami, still very young by any historical measure, has already developed enough cultural density, from Miami Vice to Art Basel and beyond, to leave its own imprint on the work of anyone who creates here.

What we make is never just an object.
It is a geography expressed through form.
A location rendered visible.

After four decades, I can feel Miami’s voice becoming clearer each year: more confident, more articulated, more deeply rooted in its own mythology. And I see that voice reflected in the work around me: in the artists, the designers, the dreamers, and, in my own case, in rugs.

Place becomes culture.
Culture becomes memory.
Memory becomes legacy.
And legacy, quietly but insistently, finds its way into the work of our hands.

There’s an old photograph in our family archive—my grandfather Khoren standing beside his delivery truck in Mexico City, sometime in the 1920s. On the door, hand-painted in block letters, you can read:

“TEL. ERIC. 14360”

Eric. with a period. An abbreviation for Ericsson—one of the earliest telephone exchanges in Mexico City. To call our family’s workshop back then, you didn’t dial; depending on the phone company you hired (yes there were several, not interconnected), you spoke to an operator and asked for “14360.” A living person connected one thread of wire to another.

When I look at that faded inscription on the truck’s door today, I no longer see just a phone number. I see a small trace of continuity between the analog world my grandfather lived in and the digital one we inhabit now.

As Mexico City’s telephone grid expanded through the decades, new digits were added to old numbers like knots extending a pattern. Our Mexico City main office number still carries four fives—each one added as the city’s network grew, followed by “35” which marks the Juarez/Roma neighborhoods. Those extra digits quietly mark the passing of time, small indicators that the line stayed open through earthquakes, recessions, and revolutions in technology.

Later as the city connected, you could tell where someone lived by the first numbers in their phone line.

• 596 prefix, meant Lomas, a hillside district where ambition met architecture.

• 568 pointed to Pedregal, the southern neighborhood built on volcanic rock and modernist ideals.
  Numbers carried geography, and geography carried meaning.

Even in their simplicity, phone numbers told stories. They revealed who was established, who had arrived, and who was still trying to connect.

I often think of those numbers—and that painted Eric.—as digital remnants, the way I think of certain motifs in classic Persian rugs. A single boteh form, once the mark of a specific tribe or valley, traveled across centuries, copied, reinterpreted, and woven into new contexts. The Herati, the Gul, the Mihrab—each began as a kind of cultural coordinate, a woven address of origin. Over time, they detached from geography but never from meaning.

In that way, an old phone number and a Persian motif serve a similar purpose: they’re both records of connection. Each one carries a fragment of information about place, time, and belonging—compressed into pattern and code.

The difference is only in medium: one was transmitted through copper wire, the other through wool. Both leave behind signals that future generations can still read, if they know how to listen—or how to look.

Our family’s number still rings, though the signal now travels through fiber and code rather than copper and switchboards. It’s the same thread, extended through new material. And just like those Persian designs that moved from one loom to another, adapting to new hands and new eras, the essence of our own craft continues to evolve.

That small dot after Eric.—a single period painted almost a century ago—reminds me that legacy is never static. Whether in a rug pattern or a phone exchange, what endures is the structure of connection itself. The medium changes; the pattern persists.

Historical Note:
Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications company, established Mexico City’s first major private telephone concession in 1905, operating manual switchboard exchanges under the Eric. prefix. Until the mid-20th century, callers requested connections verbally through human operators—a system that literally linked one wire to another by hand (just like rugs).

In my father’s library sits a small Japanese toy airplane. A toy his father gave him when he was a boy — a silver B-29 Superfortress made by Yonezawa, one of Japan’s great post-war tin-toy manufacturers. When I was a child, he taught me to play with it along the edges of his Persian rugs. The borders became runways and airfields; the medallions, distant cities illuminated at night.

Years later, I learned that this toy, light as it was, carried an immense weight of history.

Yonezawa began producing toys in the late 1940s, in the midst of Japan’s recovery from war. With heavy industries dismantled and materials scarce, craftsmen turned to what was available — scrap metal, food tins, and leftover canisters. They cut, shaped, and lithographed each piece by hand, transforming fragments of destruction into objects of imagination.

The irony was unmistakable: the B-29, once a symbol of devastation, became the very vehicle of Japan’s rebirth. These tin toys, exported to America, were Japan’s first gestures of reconciliation — proof that precision, creativity, and care could rebuild both industry and identity.

Behind this quiet resurgence were two principles that defined Japan’s post-war ethos: Monozukuri and Gaman.

Monozukuri — the art, science, and spirit of making things well — is not simply a method; it is a worldview. It holds that excellence is a moral act, that integrity can live inside the object itself. Gaman — the endurance to persist with dignity and restraint — complements it. Together, they became Japan’s way of transforming hardship into grace, and production into purpose.

When I think of my father as a child, guiding that Yonezawa airplane across the borders of those rugs, I recognize the same spirit in our own lineage. My grandfather began again after forced exile, building a life through the discipline of trade and craft. My father refined that practice into a business grounded in heroic risk-taking and respect for quality and integrity. And my own work has been about reconciling those inherited values with the possibilities of the radical future — weaving tradition and innovation into one continuous act of making.

That Yonezawa B-29 still rests in my father’s library, its tin surface burnished by time. When the light catches its wings, it glints across the patterned rug beneath — a fleeting reflection of two worlds that share a single philosophy: that progress and preservation are not opposites, but partners.

To look toward the future is not to abandon the past, but to refine it — to give flight to what was once only woven.

Some inherit wealth. Others inherit the responsibility to keep beauty alive.

The RugMan

This piece follows my earlier reflection on Austin as a place of convergence—a city where geography, culture, and ambition meet. After returning for the Mexico Design Fair, the feeling deepened. Austin doesn’t just sit at a crossroads—it is one. The city lies near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Interstate 10, two arteries that connect the entire continent: from the tundras of Canada to the highlands of central Mexico, and from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

At the Collectors’ Dinner that Odabashian sponsored, I spoke briefly about how these roads resemble a modern Silk Road—routes of exchange not for goods alone, but for ideas, materials, and creative energy. The dinner felt like a microcosm of that network: designers, artists, and patrons in dialogue, each carrying their own stories and traditions, meeting in this improbable center.

The Abundance of Texas

Texas radiates abundance—not only material, but mental. There’s a sense of freedom in the air, a belief that anything can be made, that scale is not a constraint but an invitation. For someone in the business of making, this atmosphere feels almost utopian. It reminds me that abundance, when rooted in curiosity and generosity, becomes fertile ground for collaboration.

Marfa: The Counterpoint

A few days later, driving west through the desert, that abundance found its mirror in Marfa—a world apart. Marfa is not about growth, but about preservation. It is an artist-built ecosystem that protects creation from speculation, an unlikely town that manages to keep non-creatives at bay through sheer conviction. There, art feels essential, even sacred—a quiet defiance of commodification.

If Austin represents expansion, then Marfa represents essence. One is a crossroad, the other a refuge. Together they sketch a map of how culture might thrive in the 21st century: between the fertile chaos of exchange and the disciplined silence of making.

Driving through the desert at dusk, Donald Judd and Chinati’s presence is palpable—not as a monument, but as a reminder. He once said that the desert “permits clarity,” that its vastness allows us to see things as they truly are. In that clarity, the excess of Texas transforms into something else: not ambition for its own sake, but freedom in proportion.

Perhaps that’s the lesson of this new Silk Road—the understanding that creation needs both the open space to expand and the quiet distance to endure. Somewhere between Austin and Marfa, between the roads that connect and the horizons that refuse to end, abundance becomes awareness.

From Mountain Pass to Global Market

How Swiss Ingenuity Helped Nepal Weave a Multi-Million-Dollar Industry

In the early 1960s, Nepal stood largely outside the global economy. Roads were few, industry scarce, and opportunities for trade limited to local crafts and subsistence agriculture. Then a quiet but transformative partnership began when Swiss development agencies—guided in large part by geologist and planner Toni Hagen—arrived with a proposal that fused European organization with Himalayan skill.

Hagen, a Swiss scientist who had spent years surveying Nepal’s terrain, recognized the opportunity that Tibetan refugees brought with them: a sophisticated tradition of hand-knotted rug making. Working with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), he helped design an initiative that married that ancient craft to modern production standards and export logistics. By linking Tibetan technique, Nepalese resilience, and Swiss systems, he set in motion what would become a multi-million-dollar export industry.

Cross-Pollination as Economic Catalyst

This was not charity in the modern sense. It was collaboration with a market mindset.
Swiss technicians introduced cooperative business models, quality controls, and access to overseas markets. Nepalese and Tibetan artisans supplied the labor, artistry, and cultural depth. Together they created a product that met the expectations of international buyers while remaining rooted in Himalayan tradition.

Within two decades, Nepal went from having no rug sector to being one of the world’s premier producers of high-end carpets, employing tens of thousands and generating the foreign exchange that would help fund roads, schools, and urban growth.

A Generation Later

Recent youth-led demonstrations in Kathmandu, sparked by frustration over social-media restrictions, also reflect deeper grievances. Many young Nepalis are openly challenging the blatant hypocrisy of communist and socialist leaders whose own families enjoy lavish, privileged lifestyles while promoting austerity and collectivist ideals for everyone else.
This dissonance—visible not only in Nepal but in other nations that claim egalitarian principles while insulating their elites—has become a powerful catalyst for protest. It underscores a rising generation’s desire to reclaim the openness and dynamism that once fueled the rug trade and broader economic growth.

A Quiet Template for Global Design

Today a hand-knotted rug labeled Made in Nepal speaks to more than texture or pattern.
It carries the imprint of Swiss logistical precision, Tibetan craftsmanship, and Nepalese determination—a tangible proof that cross-cultural collaboration is not just romantic; it is wealth-creating. These rugs now reside in some of the most prestigious institutions and markets in the world, a testament to how far such an alliance of tradition and enterprise can reach.

From the passes of the Himalayas to the global design economy, this is how prosperity travels: by the meeting of worlds, the exchange of know-how, and the confidence to turn tradition into enterprise.
