My best friend’s daughter, my little “Maddyloo”, is getting married this weekend, and it is honestly one of the most bittersweet feelings I’ve ever experienced. The little girl I used to pick up from school for Nutella panini dates at Il Tramezzino, whose feet didn’t even reach the floor of the booth, grew up to become the same girl I trusted to walk Luca afterschool. She was so proud of that responsibility, she’d text me a full report everyday. And somehow, that girl is a bride now.

As her honorary aunt, I keep looking at pictures of her sitting in that booth and then at pictures of her in her wedding dress, trying to reconcile the two. I’ve spent this whole season steeped in it — dress fittings, shower talk, the endless little details, the electricity that surrounds a woman about to promise herself to someone. And yet, some part of me is still sitting at Il Tram, ordering her a hot chocolate.

A couple of weeks ago, at her bridal shower, a trial run of her makeup was being done. The makeup artist wasn’t listening to her. She wanted something softer, more natural. He kept going heavier, making her look older, and eventually it got past the point where she had said what she wanted and been ignored. Then the tears started.

Her mom told her not to worry, that they would fix it. Her fiancé, however, went out and found makeup remover. He came back, gently wiped her face, and sat with her. He didn’t ask her to talk herself out of it so the day could stay smooth for everyone else.

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that. Not the resourcefulness of finding makeup remover or even the physical tenderness of taking care of her. The part that stayed with me was that he believed her.

She said, “this doesn’t make me feel good.” And he didn’t tell her that she looked beautiful anyway, and was overreacting. He didn’t ask her to swallow her feelings because everyone was going to arrive soon and surely this wasn’t important enough to derail the day. He believed her

And I realized how much of love, at least the kind I was taught to recognize, had been built around deciding what someone else needed.

I grew up around a gentler version of this. Men who did exactly what they had been raised to believe love looked like. They worked and provided for their family, made decisions, and solved problems. And many of them would have been genuinely baffled to discover that none of it had been requested.

There was love in it, of course. I don’t doubt that. There was also an assumption: I know what you need. And because the intention was loving, no one really thought to ask whether the thing being given was actually wanted.

You don’t have to grow up hearing it said outright to absorb it. It’s already inside the vows. For better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, till death do us part. The promise itself teaches you that enduring is the proof. That love is measured by what you’re willing to withstand, even if it kills you, not by whether the thing you’re withstanding should have been asked of you at all.

I can’t think about that without thinking about 1 Corinthians 13.

We hear it at weddings so often it’s become wallpaper, a nice reading tucked between the vows and the cake. But Paul wasn’t writing a poem about romance. He was writing to a church in the middle of an ugly fight. People were divided, hurting each other. They were arguing over status and gifts and who mattered and who belonged.

Be patient. Be kind. Don’t keep score. Don’t insist on your own way.

That’s the verse I keep coming back to when I think about that bridal shower. Does not insist on its own way, and her fiance, not insisting she talk herself out of being upset so the day could stay smooth. Believes all things, and him believing her over the room, over the schedule, over what would have been easier for everyone else. He didn’t need a sermon on this passage to get it right. He just did the thing the verse actually asks. He stayed present to her instead of asking her to disappear so things could stay comfortable.

That's the difference between the vow and the verse. The vow, as we've come to use it, tells you endurance is the point. The verse never said that. It said love does not insist on its own way. It said love believes. I don’t know when, where, or how, but somewhere along the way, we have taken the language of love and used it to ask people, particularly women, to endure things they should never have been asked to endure.

Submit. Forgive him. Honor your husband. Stay. Because that's what love does.

I have watched those words do real damage when placed in the hands of someone with power over another person’s life. But, 1 Corinthians 13 asks us to practice love in the presence of another person’s humanity. It doesn’t ask one person to disappear so the relationship can remain intact. There is a difference.

And maybe that is why this tiny moment at a bridal shower has stayed with me, because my little Loo was upset, and the man she is going to marry didn’t need her to become less upset, be an easy bride, or make the room comfortable again. He needed to know what was wrong, so he found out, and then did something about it.

There is something profound about being loved by someone who doesn’t need to convince you that your experience is wrong before they can help you. Someone who doesn’t confuse loving you with knowing you better than you know yourself, who leaves room for you to remain fully yourself inside the relationship.

I keep thinking about that little girl in the booth at Il Tramezzino, her feet dangling above the floor, with a half serious half silly look on her face, telling me about her day. I loved her then. I love the woman she has become. And maybe what makes this particular transition so emotional for me is that I get to watch her walk into marriage without having to leave that little girl behind.

She gets to grow up, become a wife. She gets to be loved, say this isn’t right for me, and have the person beside her believe her.

Maybe that is one of the greatest gifts we can give the people we love. Not always knowing what they need, or fixing things for them. But being willing to listen, and believe them.

From the moment news broke of Hayden Panettiere's death on Monday, the tributes started. Shock and grief, obviously, but also gratitude, for her advocacy, for how openly she'd talked about addiction and mental health.

I've followed her since she was Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light, since she was football-obsessed Sheryl Yoast in Remember the Titans, since she became Claire Bennet on Heroes ands half the bus stops in Los Angeles carried posters that said "Save the cheerleader, Save the world." I listened to her on Jay Shetty's podcast this past May, promoting a memoir that finally told the truth about what getting there cost her, the version of her that sounded like she'd finally gotten somewhere solid. Three months later, she's dead at 36, and the official cause hasn't been confirmed, so I won't pretend to know more than the coroner does.

Her mother didn't wait for the coroner. Lesley Vogel managed her daughter's career from the time she got her first commercial at eleven months old, and the two were estranged when Hayden died. Days after Hayden died, Vogel told NBC News that Hayden was "an amazingly talented person," but that "young people who grow up in the entertainment industry... it's not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path." I watched Gayle King read the statement live on CBS Mornings and say the thing we were all thinking. "Thanks, mom, for nothing."

But the public already knew what Hayden's truth was. She'd spent the last three months of her life saying it herself, in a memoir, in the press tour that followed it, in every interview where she finally got to tell the story on her own terms instead of someone else's. Her mother's statement wasn't filling a silence. It was talking over something that had already been said, in public, by the person it actually happened to.

But Vogel isn’t wrong, either. Kids who grow up in this industry do lose their way, more often than anyone in it wants to admit. Naming that as a fact about the industry, though, days after your daughter died and months after her truth had already been told, is also a way of not naming the fact sitting right next to it. Somebody is supposed to guide the child on that path without an agenda. That was the job.

I don’t know what happened in that apartment in South Carolina. But I know Hayden already answered the question her mother’s statement was quietly asking, months before anyone needed to ask it. She’d said, in her own words, exactly what it cost to grow up as somebody’s income.

It's also not just her story. Every few years the industry loses someone who started young, and every few years the tributes use the word "tragic" like it's weather instead of a pattern with a mechanism we could name, if the coverage stuck around long enough to name it.

River Phoenix. Heath Ledger. Aaron Carter. Drew Berrymore. Macaulay Culkin.

River was a staple of my adolescence. He was ten when he became the reason his family ate that month, not as a figure of speech, but an actual fact of his childhood after his parents left a commune with nothing. By his teens he wasn't just the family's income, he was its center of gravity, the one everyone, including his own parents, looked to for money and direction and permission to keep putting pressure on him. He died at 23 outside The Viper Room, having spent years self-medicating a life that had never once let him be young enough to not need medicating.

Aaron Carter shows the same mechanism with the receipts attached. California has a law named after child actor Jackie Coogan, built specifically to stop parents from spending their kid’s earnings, requiring 15 percent to sit untouched in trust until the child turns 18. Aaron has said publicly his parents never honored it. He turned 18 expecting wealth and instead found himself roughly $4 million in debt to the IRS. He cycled through rehab and diagnosis after diagnosis for the next fifteen years, telling anyone who’d listen that fame and money had taken his childhood from him, before he drowned in his bathtub in 2022 with an inhalant and a benzodiazepine in his system. He was 34.

"Fame and money destroyed our family," his brother Nick says in "The Carters: Hurts to Love You," the 2025 Paramount+ documentary that traces how three of the five Carter siblings died young. It's one of a wave of recent industry documentaries, turning a hard look at how young performers get managed, and how rarely their mental health is treated as part of the job instead of an afterthought to it.

Here's the elephant none of those documentaries name directly: mental health support isn't a nice-to-have for a child who is also a breadwinner, it's structural infrastructure, as necessary as a tutor or a stunt coordinator on set, and the industry still treats it as optional. We built a law to protect a child star's money. We never built one to protect their mental and emotional health. SAG-AFTRA has added some protections for young performers in recent contracts, but enforcement stays inconsistent state to state.

Here's the part that should be good news. The fix already exists.

Not everyone this pattern touches gets swallowed by it, and the exceptions are the closest thing to a blueprint anyone has offered. Drew Barrymore was working at eleven months old, famous by seven, drinking by nine, in rehab by thirteen, on paper more damaged than River or Aaron. But at fourteen she did something neither of them ever got the chance to do. She divorced her parents. Legal emancipation cut the wire between her income and their control of it. It didn’t erase what had already happened to her, she’s said as much for thirty years, but it changed who she was earning for, and that turn is the hinge her whole second act swings on.

Macaulay Culkin found a quieter version of the same cut. At fifteen, in the middle of his parents’ custody battle over the roughly $17 million he’d earned by then, he petitioned the court to remove both of them as his legal guardians and had their names taken off his trust. It wasn’t a divorce. It didn’t need to be. Once the money stopped running through his father’s hands, his father stopped having leverage.

The last exception isn't a star. After the Carter siblings finished filming their reality show, Nick sat his siblings down and offered to pay for therapy, for as long as any of them wanted it. Only Angel raised her hand. She stayed in it for close to a decade, working through what she's since called generations of dysfunction, and she is now, along with Nick, the only one of the five Carter children still alive. The offer was identical for all four siblings. The outcome split entirely on who walked through the door. Angel has since turned what she learned into her work with the Kids Mental Health Foundation, getting resources in front of families before the crisis instead of after it.

Line them up and talent isn't the variable, fame isn't the variable, even the severity of the childhood isn't the variable. The variable is whether anything ever interrupted the arrangement where a child's worth got measured in what they brought home. River never got the interruption. Aaron never got it, even while he was begging for it in public. Hayden's story is still being written, but nothing in it so far breaks the pattern. Drew got hers from a courtroom, and so did Macaulay, in his own quieter way. Angel got hers from a living room on the last day of a reality show, and had the sense, at eighteen, to take it.

None of this is really only about Hollywood. It’s about what happens to anyone whose usefulness got confused with their worth before they were old enough to know the difference. The industry just puts a name and a box office number on what happens quietly in a lot of ordinary families too, and it has the resources, the documentaries, and the case studies to know better by now.

If you were the reliable one, the one who held things together before you were old enough to know what you were holding, this is the same story in different clothes. The interruption is still available. It rarely announces itself as a courtroom. Usually it just sounds like someone finally asking what you need instead of what you can provide, and you being the one who says yes.

The seat next to her was open, so I took it. I knew she was a bridesmaid, but I didn’t know her. Surprising, given that I know everything about the bride. Somewhere between lunch and dancing, she asked what advice I had. Neither of us expected the next forty-five minutes.

Three words came out first.

Don’t. Lose. Yourself.

Then the instruction, not the metaphor. Go to the yoga class. Then go see him. Don’t cancel the thing that was yours before he existed to make more room for him, because the room you’re making requires you to lose yourself.

She looked at me like she was deciding whether to ask the real question. She’s deep. She loves sitting inside a feeling until it makes sense out loud. He’s logical, and he’ll tell you so himself. Doesn’t get emotional. She wanted to know if that could work, two people running on different systems.

I smiled. And asked her what’s her sign - virgo. I told her I was an aquarius and loved going deep too.

Don’t need him to be everyone.

I told her the truth I wasn’t sure she wanted. Emotional or not, there are things a woman will always need her girlfriends for, because some men can’t go deep. That’s just fact she needs to decide if she can live with.

And whatever you do, don’t settle.

You’re each there to help the other become more fully who they already are. Not to convert each other into easier versions of yourselves.

I watched it land. The programming surfacing, the limiting belief showing its shape for maybe the first time. She looked at me like, how do you know all this, and in the same breath, like, what are you even saying to me right now.

We got onto the bride. How she never settled, not once, not when everyone around her paired off with whoever was available. The bridesmaid nodded and said, “But that’s one in a million….”

I let that sit for a second, because that’s not a fact about how relationships go. That’s a story built in advance, so settling feels reasonable later, when it’s lonely and the option is standing right there.

The bride didn’t get lucky. She held a line and waited for someone who could meet her at it

The music started up again, and someone came to pull her onto the floor, and just like that the conversation was over, the way conversations at these events always end, mid-thought, unfinished, because DJ Jonah doesn’t wait for you to make your point.

I watched her dance for a minute before I lost her in the crowd. I don’t know what she’ll keep from those forty-five minutes and what she’ll let go of by the weekend. I don’t know if she’ll go to the yoga class next time instead of canceling it, or if any of it survived past the champagne.

But I know what I’d want kept, if I had to pick one thing — the bride, dancing with her groom, having never once settled.

That’s the only part of the day that wasn’t advice, it was just proof.

This week is mine.

A client said it to me in a session “I don’t know where I went wrong.” I hear some version of that sentence once or twice a month. Always pointed at one decision, like there’s ever just one. Like a nervous system and a childhood and every subconscious belief a person’s never looked at didn’t already write the ending before the decision got made.

I wasn’t even thinking about my own life when I repeated her sentence to a friend later that week. She went quiet for a second, then just “oooof.” Not a sentence. A sound. “I ask myself that all the time,” she said.

Three of us. Same five words.

I’m spending this month doing a piece of relationship work inside TBM, the program I’ve been in for years and where a lot of my own healing has happened.

The first lesson is called Mirrors. The idea is simple. Relationships show you back to yourself, whatever you’re not looking at directly, they hand you through a partner instead.

I didn’t make it past the introduction before my own life started proving it. Every conversation I’ve had this month has had the same shape. Someone hands me their relationship. Somewhere underneath the listening, I hear mine.

The best place to start seemed obvious. One of the most iconic love stories of all time. John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.

I’ve loved him since seventh grade, since I saw the images of him under the desk and the salute in my history book. From there it became a full Kennedy fascination. Jackie Kennedy was an expander for me before I had the word for what that meant. So when he married Carolyn in 1996, I was heartbroken. And curious, who was this person? Three years later, the plane went down and I couldn’t look at a plane in the sky for months without a knot forming in my throat.

So I avoided Love Story for a long time once it came out. I didn’t want the version someone else had built to touch the version I had created. When I finally watched it, fiction, made-for-TV and all, I saw something I hadn’t let myself see at eighteen watching the actual news footage and magazine covers, America’s Prince and his princess, praying this one outlasted Diana and Charles.

It wasn’t a love story. It was a trauma bond.

Two people who learned early that the people closest to you leave, recognizing that wound in each other, while the world called it "love at first sight" because that was a better story than recognition. Carolyn got called quiet, reserved, private when what she was doing was protecting herself the only way she knew how, and nobody wanted to call it that because it's less romantic than calling it mystery.

I don't think this is unique to them. I think it's the shape most of what gets called an American love story is actually built on, once you know to look for the wound doing the choosing instead of the person.

Walk the Line runs the same mechanism. Johnny Cash loses his brother, watches his father wish out loud it had been him instead, and spends thirty years performing his way out of that guilt. June Carter grows up inside a family act with no version of herself that exists off the record.

When they land together, it doesn't read like two people choosing each other so much as two people finding roles they already knew how to play. He needs someone to keep him grounded. She needs to be needed enough to believe she isn't disposable. Everyone calls it "the love that saved him." Nobody calls it a woman who built her whole self around staying useful enough to stay wanted.

A Star Is Born says it more plainly, because addiction can’t afford to dress itself up. Jackson Maine finds Ally before the world has seen her, looks at her like she’s the one true thing, and that look is the entire seduction, because she’s spent her life being told she isn’t enough to matter. Being chosen by someone whose opinion overrides every rejection she’s carried isn’t falling in love. It’s finally being allowed to believe the thing she was told wasn’t true. And Jackson's whole identity was built on being the one who provides, first for his brother, then for the industry, then for her, so the moment she stops needing him the old way, there's nothing left underneath the giving.

He doesn't come apart because he loses her. He comes apart because he was never anything without being needed.

I keep landing on these stories because I know the shape from the inside, not because I found it clever from the outside. The rebranding of passion, destiny, and meant to be, is just what we call it when a feeling is too big to sit with plainly. Easier to hand it to fate than admit what felt like being chosen was actually something our nervous system recognized.

It’s 6pm on a First Friday, which means everyone is wrapping up, getting ready to gather in the kitchen for our CEO’s monthly kudos and update. I’ve just gotten an email that needs marketing’s approval before EOD. The intern is crying in the hallway because someone spoke to her in a way she’s not used to, directly. The Associate Producer wants to know if the schedule can absorb one more day. I answer all three before any of them finish the sentence, and I don’t notice I’m doing it. That’s the part nobody tells you about being good at something. The better you get, the less it looks like anything at all.

I've worked in every corner of this industry. Scripted, unscripted, animation, games, agency, studio, set. Not the no-name kind either. Fast & Furious. Despicable Me. I've held budgets and breakdowns and somebody's breakdown, often in the same afternoon.

If you asked me to name my skill, I'd probably reach for the resume version. Operations. Project Manager. Cross-functional leadership. Words that sound like a title.

But that’s not actually what I do. What I do is run logistics and manage a room’s nervous system at the same time, without switching gears, without anyone clocking that two different jobs just happened in the same sixty seconds. Most people can do one or the other. I do both, and I do it so fluently I stopped counting it as work.

That’s the block, if I’m honest. Not modesty. Recognition. I can’t put a price on a thing I’ve never actually seen myself do.

Try it. Try to describe your own reflex and watch how fast the language goes generic.

I say operations. I say “I hold the room”. Both true, neither felt. The moment something becomes automatic, it stops registering as skill and starts registering as personality. So I don’t walk around thinking I’m good at this. I just walk around being it, invisibly, while everyone around me is taking notes I’ll never read.

That’s a strange thing to live inside. The one skill I’d need the clearest eyes on, to actually charge for it, is the one I’ve never had any distance from. If I’m honest about what sits underneath that, it isn’t confidence I’m missing. It’s a fear, so quiet, I didn’t know it was around.

For the most part, I Feel Pretty really doesn’t have anything to do with beauty. Amy Schumer’s character, Renee, falls off a spin bike, hits her head, and wakes up believing something that was true the whole time. Her face softens before she says a word. Her eyes go wide with a kind of stunned relief, like someone let go of a held breath they didn’t know they’d been holding for years. Nothing about her has changed, but everything about her has changed.

You know that space?

I’ve been in that space more times that I’d like to admit out loud. The place between what was always true and what I finally let myself believe.

Before the fall, Renee moves through the world the way we all have, at one point or another. Apologizing for wanting things without saying it out loud, just living it. Applying for the thing she’s already qualified for like she’s asking permission. Standing at the edge of rooms instead of in them. Nobody did this to her. No one handed her the belief that she was the exception to what’s possible. She built it herself, brick by brick, out of comparisons and old rejections and a running commentary that got so familiar it stopped sounding like a voice and started sounding like the truth. The limit was never out there enforcing itself. It was self-installed, self-maintained, which means it was always self-revocable.

But then the concussion breaks something. Not her confidence. Her static. For one unguarded stretch, the part of her that keeps score goes quiet, and whoever she actually is gets to walk around unsupervised. She flirts because she assumes she’s wanted. She takes the job because of course she can do it. None of this is delusion. It’s just her, without the interference.

You’ve had a version of this too, a stretch where you moved like the person you actually like being, and remember exactly how long it lasted.

What’s strange is how fast the world responds. Not to a new haircut or a different walk, but to the absence of her own hesitation. People don’t mirror your face back to you. They mirror your certainty. The second she stops negotiating her right to be there, the room stops asking her to.

It doesn’t hold. It never does on the first pass, or the fifth. The moment Renee sees her reflection and realizes nothing physical changed, she collapses back into the old math, deciding the version of her that got the guy and the job wasn’t really her. That the good thing only happened because of a story she was tricked into believing. That collapse shows up right after the good thing lands, dressed up as clarity, insisting it’s just being honest with you.

This is the part nobody puts in the highlight reel, where you get a glimpse of what's possible and immediately start building the case against it. Where the old story comes back dressed as honesty, and the version of you that finally showed up gets treated like she was faking it. It isn't backsliding. It's a test running quietly in the background, checking whether the belief can hold up on its own once the excuse for having it is gone.

Renee stays, eventually. Not by becoming someone new again, but by recognizing there was never anyone new to become. The woman at the party and the woman in the mirror were always the same person. One of them just knew it. The only thing left is how many more rounds you’ll make her prove it.

That’s the whole shift, and it’s smaller than the movie’s premise makes it sound. Renee didn’t manifest a different life. She stopped requiring evidence before she’d let herself have the one in front of her.

The concussion is a convenient device, but it’s also a bit of a decoy. It lets the story pretend something external had to happen before Renee could believe in herself, when the truer version is messier and more available than that. She didn’t need a head injury. She needed to stop rehearsing the belief that kept her small. Neither do you.

Question worth sitting with… How many more times you’re planning to make yourself earn a belief you’ve already proven true?

One afternoon, I couldn’t have been older than seven, my mom and I were going through her closet and came across a box of old photos. I remember looking at them, not quite understanding why I wasn’t in them and she was. A whole conversation about my existence and purpose came out of that confusion.

I was twelve weeks premature, she told me, and she had fought hard to carry me, and a fight like that doesn’t produce an ordinary life. I was young enough to take it as fact, the way you’d take the color of your own eyes as fact. Something decided before I had any say in it. What she gave me that day was love, stated plainly. What I did with it, on my own, was turn it into a job description. (👋🏼 Aquarius here, specifically Mercury in Aquarius.) I spent the next four decades trying to reverse engineer what the something was.

Nobody handed me the shape of it, just the certainty that it existed and the quiet expectation that I’d find my way there eventually, probably around the time I got the right job after the right degree, or hit some invisible marker everyone else seemed to be racing toward too.

So I went looking for a manual. Religion. Psychology. Manifestation. Astrology. Human Design. Gene Keys. Metaphysics. Stacking chart on chart like if I layered enough systems on top of each other the exact coordinates would surface. Each one told me something true. None of them told me the thing I actually wanted to know, which was what do I do with this on a random Tuesday.

I was born late enough to catch the tail end of an old promise, work hard, climb the ladder, the ladder leads somewhere, and early enough to watch that ladder get pulled up rung by rung through my twenties, thirties, and now forties. So while the purpose stayed intact, the instructions for finding it kept expiring.

This is the part nobody prepared me for. Not the collapse itself, the middle of it. Watching the institutions I was raised to trust reveal themselves as improvised the whole time. Feeling the old operating system glitch in real time while the new one hasn’t finished installing.

From the outside, my own slow motion breakdown about, of all things, purpose and identity, probably just looked like a woman in her forties having a moment. Whatever happened to dealing with a midlife crisis with an affair and a convertible? Or wait, that's the old ways too. No new instructions there either. From the inside, though, it was quieter than that, and it's lasted years.

I’ve spent most of my adult life treating that search as homework. Something to complete, a box to check so I could finally exhale. So last week, when I saw wrote a piece called “It’s Time to Question Everything,” I was obviously going to read it.

Inside the piece, she mentions a Radiolab episode about primordial germ cells, a group of 40 or so cells that become, perhaps, the most important cells in the body because they are the only cells that can make all other kinds of cells to create a whole person and allow us to reproduce.

The way she talked about this episode with a true-to-her-word promise of seeing purpose and destiny like never before, I had to listen. I’ve stopped calling that kind of timing an accident.

Anyways, these cluster of cells spend most of embryonic development doing essentially nothing, just holding their position while every organ around them scrambles to differentiate, their entire early existence just sitting there, uncommitted, resisting every signal urging them to become something else faster. These cells will eventually become the only ones in the body capable of creating the next generation, arguably the most consequential job going. I felt something I wasn’t expecting. Relief.

Nobody’s rushing them. Their stillness isn’t a delay before the purpose starts. It is the purpose, at that stage.

I keep going back to Gene Key 33, the one that says some gates aren’t built to run always on, they’re built to retreat first, and only speak once the story has finished forming on the inside. I’ve been treating that line like scripture lately. Cancelling calls I didn’t have the bandwidth for. Going quiet in places I usually perform being fine. Not because I ran out of things to say, because the things I have to say aren’t done cooking yet, and for once I let that be enough of a reason.

I don’t think the purpose I was promised at seven was a lie. I think I’ve spent forty years trying to arrive at it on a schedule nothing about this particular era was ever going to honor. The ladder’s gone. The instructions expired. What’s left is the actual, unglamorous middle, the part where you don’t get to know yet.

Princess, obviously. Jkjk I was Brian. And Allison, although not a liar, but I definitely had a sadness I’d learned to make invisible. Andy too, performing for parents whose love came with conditions attached. A nerd underneath everything. The good girl who got so good at it she forgot it was a performance.

Flash forward to this past Saturday. Laying on the couch with Todd and Luca next to me. Brian reads the letter at the end and something shifts.

I felt it land somewhere below the part of me that knows how to explain things.

Here is what John Hughes understood that almost no one said out loud in 1985: the version of you other people see is a survival strategy, not the Self. We are all mirrors. Every character in that film is performing for someone who isn’t in the room. Claire for her social currency. Andrew for his father. Brian for his grades. Allison for the invisibility that keeps her safe. And Bender’s whole persona is armor so thick he’s nearly disappeared inside it.

But nothing happens. That’s the whole film; five people, in a library, on a Saturday, with nowhere to go, slowly running out of performance. The masks drop because in that containment, there is no room left to maintain them. And instead, something honest becomes possible. Inside a culture obsessed with sorting and achieving and belonging, The Breakfast Club quietly said: the sorting is a lie and everyone knows it but nobody is saying it.

I was thirteen. I didn’t have the language or consciousness I have now, but I felt the wrongness without being able to name it.

Being seen is not what I thought it was. I thought it was about finally being legible. Getting the words right. Presenting the full complexity in a way that left no room for misreading. I thought if I could just be clear enough, someone would reflect the whole thing back and I would finally feel real.

What I know now is that I was asking other people to do something only I can do.

The nerd stayed hidden because the princess was already working. The basket case made herself invisible because invisibility was safer than being unseen, and at least one of those you can choose.

None of that was anyone failing me. It was me outsourcing my own seeing, literally handing the mirror to people who were doing their best with what I gave them, which was never the whole thing.

Watching the film at forty-eight I looked at all five of them and felt no distance. Not characters or archetypes. Parts. My parts. The ones I performed and the ones I buried and the ones I am still in the slow process of letting back in. That’s the work. Not the grand revelation, but the slow unglamorous returning.

The Breakfast Club ends before Monday. Before the hallway test, where we find out if being witnessed once, in a library, on a Saturday, was enough to change the shape of things.

I used to live in that gap, breath held, waiting to find out if the seeing would hold… and it never did. Being seen, right now, in this season, means something quieter and more demanding than I expected. It means I am the one who has to take a deep look at all of it. The princess and the nerd and the one who made her sadness decorative and the one who performed for love that came with terms. Without deciding in advance what the room can hold. Because they’re all coming with me.

I was walking to the paint store, I walk everywhere, headphones in, listening to Feel Seen & Witnessed DI in TBM’s Be Seen Challenge. And I looked up and the leaves were trembling, this soft, still-day shimmer, and something in me said: What if they’re celebrating your presence?

Nature, in the middle of the city, witnessing me back. I’m being received. That’s the only way I know how to describe what this past few weeks has felt like.

I’ve been doing the challenge that’s centered on visibility, magnetism, and being truly witnessed in a month that was already cosmically loaded. Jupiter and Venus were conjunct in Cancer when this all began. Cancer rules home, belonging, the walls that hold you. Jupiter expands. Venus beautifies. Together, in the sign of home, which is also my first house. I didn’t plan that, nobody plans that. I just looked up and the leaves were moving.

Which brings me to why I was buying paint.

I’ve lived in my apartment for 14 years. The walls have been the same neutral beige the entire time. Crown molding in a light grey I never chose. A kitchen that was beige and blue in a way that was never mine, never even close. I repainted the bathroom once, a decade ago, and that was the last time anything changed. I wanted a real refresh almost since I moved in but the timing was never right. First we were in the office every day, then the pandemic hit, then working from home, and then it just never happened. Honestly? Todd didn’t want to rock the boat with the landlord. So I waited. I worked around it. I kept tolerating walls I didn’t love.

Here’s the thing though, intentional spaces and connections is one of my authentic codes. I talk about beauty as a biological need, not a luxury. I know in my body how much our environment shapes our sense of safety, expansion, aliveness. I believe this wholeheartedly. And I was living inside beige walls and grey trim that made me never want to hang my own art.

I’m not beating myself up about it. Life is layered and timing is real. But I’m also not going to pretend it wasn't sitting with me every single day.

So this year, I stopped waiting.

The painters came. The walls are white now. Clean, bright, finally a blank canvas that actually feels like one. The accent wall in the living room, the one that also frames the kitchen windows, is this warm saturated color called Butterfield. The whole space shifted the moment it went up. And listen, I chose that color completely subconsciously. It wasn’t until afterward that I realized it matched the exact palette of the Be Seen Challenge I’d been moving through all month. The bedroom accent wall is green, the same color as the nervous system reset content I’d been sitting with. I didn’t engineer any of it. The inside and the outside were already in conversation. I just finally gave them walls worth talking about.

Beneath that Butterfield window I built out a little health nook. A Healthyline mat on the floor, red light therapy, a candle, my journal, a woven basket filled with my Pvolve workout gear. Everything I need to drop in, ground, move, restore. It’s small. It’s mighty. It’s mine

And then there's the coffee bar, which has been on my manifestation list for years. Not the pantry that houses it, the coffee bar specifically. A whole white unit now lives at the end of my kitchen. The Cuisinart, the French press, tinctures lined up like little apothecary soldiers, a Himalayan salt lamp glowing pink, Ayurveda cookbooks I absolutely aspire to use, and a Buddha planter on top with oregano.

Morning ritual, fully externalized.

The irony that I don't cook but have an entire stack of healthy cookbooks is not lost on me. Aspiration is its own valid energy. And for the record, between the two of us, Todd and I own approximately every shade of black, white, and grey. The apartment has officially out-colored us.

New curtains. A wall propagation set for the bathroom with plants and orchids I’d been eyeing forever. And my art, art I made myself, finally on the wall. For years the beige and grey just swallowed everything I tried to hang. Now it lands. I keep walking through the rooms just to feel it.

I am genuinely giddy.

One of the honest reasons I’d been slower to show up on Instagram, slower to film, slower to let people in, is that I didn’t love what they’d see. The backdrop wasn’t me. It was blah, and I knew it was blah, and I felt that gap every time I thought about turning on a camera.

And now I realize: the inner work was always happening. The outer just needed to catch up.

The woman who moved into this apartment 14 years ago needed those beige walls. She was still figuring out who she was. She didn’t yet know what her home should feel like, or what she deserved to live inside. She was still living for others.

Part of being truly seen, not just visible but actually seen, is letting your outside world finally reflect who you’ve become on the inside. Not who you were when you arrived.

I just looked up, and the leaves were celebrating me.

My first year in entertainment, my boss used to wander the halls playing his guitar. To say it was irritating is an understatement. I hated him for it, not personally, of course. The irritation, let me tell you, was physical: jaw clenched, hands balled into fists, doing my best to breathe while I answered every call with a smile and a "will return." All I could see were the gaps between where we were and where we needed to be. We had work to do. Phone calls to return, emails to send, meetings to schedule. And he was just wandering, taking up space with something that produced nothing.

My higher self knows now that he was regulating. That the guitar was how he stayed in his body through the pressure of that environment. But the part of me that was running the show back then felt like his behavior disregarded everything I was doing.

It took me twenty years to understand what she was being accused of.

If you’ve been following me, you know I am a big fan of TBM and that I’ve been waiting for this week to start their mid-year challenge, Be Seen. It started on Monday, and I opened the app. Closed it. Opened it again. Closed it again. So I went for a walk instead.

Forty minutes into a morning walk, curious about which parts of me needed attention in this container, somewhere between solfeggio frequencies and a conversation with Claude.ai, a part surfaced. Gently tapping my shoulder: I’ve been here the whole time.

She was young, not yet twelve, I think. She wasn’t angry or angsty. She was just tired of sending the same signal into a system that was too busy functioning to receive it. The signal was simple: I’m here. As I am. Right now. Is that enough?

But the system always had a different answer ready. And I’ve been thinking about why.

If you haven’t seen it: Margo’s Got Money Troubles, created by David E. Kelley, the man behind so many legendary TV shows that I grew up watching. The show follows Margo, played by Elle Fanning, daughter of a Hooters waitress, Michelle Pfeiffer, and an ex-pro wrestler, Nick Offerman, who gets pregnant by her married English professor, Michael Angarano, and turns to OnlyFans to keep the lights on. If it sounds like a lot, it is, but stay with me.

On paper it sounds like a guilty pleasure, and maybe it is, but it’s also one of the most honest portrayals of what it means to be a woman trying to find her footing that I’ve seen in a long time. Because it’s not really about OnlyFans. It’s about two women with the same wound and opposite responses.

Margo rushes toward visibility, almost recklessly. She gets on camera, puts herself out there, certain that being seen is just a matter of being brave enough to show up. Her mother Shyanne has spent her whole life doing the opposite, contracting, shrinking, waiting. So when Shyanne finally gets the marriage she always wanted, and you watch her slowly disappear into it. She has confused being chosen with being seen her entire life. And when she finds out what her daughter is doing, she shames her. That’s the moment the show crystalized for me.

The shame is a projection:You’re doing the thing I couldn’t.

Being chosen is not the same as being seen, and neither is visibility. And shame pointed at you is not information about who you are. Yet we spend whole lifetimes mistaking all three for the real thing.

Real being-seen has a very specific signal in the body, and neither Margo nor Shyanne has found it yet. There's a settling, a kind of exhale you didn't know you were holding. It's not the rush Margo feels when the views or money come in, and it's not the relief Shyanne feels when he finally proposes. There is something quieter and more destabilizing than either, when you’re truly seen, because it requires you to stay present while someone holds your fullness without flinching.

Performing visibility has a particular charge to it. A little too fast, a little too bright, the kind of energy that needs the response to complete the circuit; you put it out there and then you wait, scanning, even when you're pretending not to.

Contracting has its own texture; a low grade relief that you stayed safe, mixed with something that feels almost like grief. Shyanne learns that hum intimately. So does anyone who has ever made themselves smaller to make someone else more comfortable. Neither one lands in the body the way desired.

Here’s the thing I haven’t told you yet.

I recognized myself in both of them, and that’s not a comfortable thing to sit with because I‘m a coach. I write about the inner work, nervous system regulation, helping high achievers get out of their own way and I try to make sense of it all through film and TV. I have the credentials, the frameworks, the lived experience. And…if you scroll my Instagram, my Substack, my LinkedIn, you’ll notice something. I don’t do a lot of reels. I’m not often talking directly to camera. I write, I share, but there’s a version of being seen I’ve been skillfully, professionally avoiding. It looks nothing like Shyanne’s disappearing act, and it’s nowhere near Margo’s camera. But the nervous system signature is the same, a careful calibration of how much light to let in, how much to let out.

If you've been reading along this month, you've heard me talk about joy in a lot of different ways. As a part of you that never left. As something that lives in the sensory details of an ordinary Tuesday. As a physiological state your nervous system can actually be trained toward. All of that is true, and this is the piece that gets underneath all of it.

Because underneath all of it is a question I kept coming back to: what actually is joy, at the level where it organizes you? As a frequency and I mean that in the most literal sense I can, not as a feel “good vibes” metaphor, but as the actual wavelength at which your entire system is broadcasting.

That question is what sent me down the rabbit hole of David Hawkins. Dr. Hawkins spent decades mapping human consciousness on a logarithmic scale. Not linear, logarithmic. Which means the difference between levels isn’t a matter of degree, it’s categorical. On paper it looks like a ladder, but in the body, each level feels like a completely different way of being alive. The way that being tired and being sick are both on the same spectrum and nothing alike.

Hawkins marked 200 as the dividing line. Below it, life is driven by force. Above it, it starts to move through something else, what he called power. Courage sits at 200. Willingness at 310. Love at 500. Joy at 540.

Here’s what stopped me: most of us have been at 540. We know what it feels like. The question isn’t whether joy is accessible, it’s why we keep treating it like a visitor instead of a place we live.

So let’s get to it.

Here’s what I want you to sit with for a moment. You’ve probably optimized a lot. Your sleep, your calendar, your nutrition, your morning routine, your entire productivity stack. And yet, if you’re honest, joy still feels like something you get to have after. After the work is done, after the goals are hit, after you’ve earned it somehow. It’s the last thing on the list, which means it’s usually the first thing that gets cut.

What if that’s the exact thing costing you the performance you keep chasing?

I started tracking my heart rate variability (HRV) with HeartMath's Inner Balance a while back. HRV measures the variation in time between your heartbeats, and it turns out to be one of the most honest windows into how your nervous system is actually doing: how adaptable you are, how quickly you recover, how clearly you can think when things get hard.

Elite athletes obsess over it and high-performing executives are catching on. When I first started, hitting 300 coherence points a day felt genuinely out of reach. I assumed it was a breathwork problem. It wasn't. What moved the needle fastest was genuine positive emotion, a memory that actually lit something up inside me, a moment of gratitude my body believed, joy that I accessed on purpose rather than waited to stumble into.

Your physiology doesn’t wait for you to decide joy is earned. It responds to it in real time.

The inverse is equally true, and this is where it gets important. Cortisol, the hormone our body releases under stress, is genuinely useful when you need it. The problem is what happens when pressure becomes your permanent operating mode. Research has documented that people with the highest cortisol levels show actual reductions in hippocampal volume, leading to memory loss, attention deficit, and a lack of cognitive organization.

But even before it gets that serious, chronically elevated cortisol quietly caps you. It narrows what you can access, creatively and cognitively, and because it happens gradually, you adapt. You start performing at the ceiling of a stressed nervous system and calling it your natural capacity. You think you just need to push harder, when actually the system is asking for something else entirely.

Barbara Fredrickson, a researcher who spent decades studying positive emotions, found something that should change how every high-achiever thinks about this. Her broaden-and-build theory showed that joy, interest, and contentment literally expand your perceptual field. Under positive emotion, your brain can access more: more creative connections, broader awareness, better pattern recognition. Under threat or chronic pressure, that field collapses. You become efficient only at the thing directly in front of you, which sounds useful until you realize that most meaningful insights can't be reached that way. And what Fredrickson also found is that the resources you build through positive emotion, resilience, creativity, connection, don't evaporate when the feeling passes. They accumulate.

Which brings me to where burnout actually lives, because I don’t think we talk about this honestly enough. It’s not just overwork. It’s the slow erosion that happens when a nervous system has been bracing for so long that life stops feeling like yours. When the things you wanted most go emotionally flat, not because you failed at them, but because you’ve been so starved of genuine nourishment along the way that arriving doesn’t feel like anything anymore. That’s not a motivation problem. That’s a depletion problem. And more pressure, more discipline, more optimization won’t fix it, because those are the exact inputs that created it.

Joy fixes it. Not by making things easier, but by changing what it feels like to do hard things. When your nervous system has regular contact with genuine pleasure, play, beauty, and connection, effort stops being something to brace against. You return to your work differently, and more like your true self.

You’ve spent years optimizing everything else. This one was just missing from the playbook.

Entire weeks disappear this way. Then one day they look up and wonder why they feel emotionally flat despite technically doing everything “right.” This is what chronic joylessness actually looks like; a quiet narrowing, until numbness starts to feel like adulthood.

What’s interesting is that joy rarely returns through dramatic reinvention. It returns through tiny experiences that remind the body that life is something to participate in, not simply manage.

Ever since Dr. Tara Swart began speaking about neuroaesthetics, I’ve thought differently about beauty. The nervous system responds to color, light, music, scent, softness, spaciousness, taste. Beauty isn’t frivolous. It changes the emotional quality of the human experience. And some people are waiting for joy while continuously surrounding themselves with things that communicate harshness, noise, and urgency. Our environments aren’t neutral, they’re constantly communicating with our body.

So when I began designing a life that seduced me back into joy, these were the five things I focused on.

The first is paying closer attention to sensory beauty, not performative luxury, but the real kind. Fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s. Real plates instead of eating out of containers. Olive oil that smells like you picked the olives yourself. People underestimate what chronic ugliness does to the psyche. Clutter, constant noise, meals inhaled instead of tasted, after a while the body stops expecting pleasure altogether. Small, consistent moments of beauty change that.

The second is stopping the postponement of enjoyment. So many adults treat pleasure like something that must be earned through exhaustion first. They save the beautiful perfume, the nice outfit, the weekend away. But one of the fastest ways to reconnect to life is to stop acting as though enjoyment requires permission. Wear the silk pajamas on a random Wednesday. Drink coffee slowly from the beautiful mug instead of rushing out the door half-awake. Adorn your ears and neck with jewelry from your grandparents. These things seem insignificant until you realize how many people spend their entire lives saving pleasure for a future version of themselves that never quite arrives.

The third is protecting the atmosphere of your life more carefully. There’s a reason walking through Time Square at dusk feels emotionally different than standing beneath fluorescent lights in a strip mall parking lot. The body is constantly responding to texture, sound, lighting, beauty, tension, pace. Most people just don’t realize how much of their exhaustion is environmental and I don’t only mean physical spaces; certain feeds, certain conversations, certain jobs keep the nervous system trapped in low-grade survival all day long. Joy becomes much more accessible when your life stops feeling like something you merely endure.

The fourth is creating moments of emotional spaciousness throughout the day. Sit outside longer than necessary. Leave your phone inside while you walk the dog. Read in bed while it rains. Joy requires a certain quality of attention, and attention has become one of the rarest things people possess.

The fifth is allowing yourself to become responsive to pleasure again. There are people who move through life barely registering taste, texture, music, touch, or rest because their nervous system has been trained to prioritize usefulness above everything else. But usefulness without beauty eventually becomes emotionally dehydrating. Part of coming back to yourself is rebuilding your relationship to enjoyment without immediately needing to justify it.

The older I get, the more I believe a good life should feel seductive to return to. Not impressive from the outside, or optimized within an inch of its life. Just deeply inhabitable. A life with texture and beauty, where my body doesn’t feel like an afterthought.

I refuse to live a life my spirit continuously tries to flee. There are still strawberries to taste slowly. Sunsets to revel in.

I am allowed to enjoy being here. And so are you.

What we’re less fluent in is the other kind, the ordinary every day joy. The cup of coffee that’s exactly right, the way light moves across a floor in the late afternoon, a moment after a long conversation when you both go quiet and it isn’t awkward at all. These moments don’t ask to be noticed. And mostly, we don’t.

I used to think some people were just more wired for presence, more capable of catching joy mid-flight. What I’ve come to believe is simpler, and stranger: it’s not a wiring problem. It’s an attention problem. And attention, unlike temperament, is something you can work with.

The way most of us move through a day is forward. Not dramatically forward, we’re not sprinting, but there’s a constant, low-grade lean toward the next task, the next conversation, the next version of things. Even in environments designed for rest, part of us doesn’t fully settle. This isn’t a flaw, it’s a side effect of being highly competent. The forward lean is what gets things done, what keeps you reliable, what holds your life together.

The problem is that joy doesn’t live in the forward direction. Joy lives exactly where you are. And if your attention is always slightly ahead of the moment, you will keep arriving at places you’ve already mentally left.

I don’t think most people are unhappy. I think most people are adjacent to their own lives. Present in body, elsewhere in mind, moving through experiences that could be meaningful and coming out the other side without quite having been in them.

What changes this isn’t a practice, exactly. It’s more like a noticing.

You start to catch the texture of things, like sitting outside with your coffee gone lukewarm while your dog watches absolutely nothing in particular for twenty minutes. The way your body actually feels when something is genuinely funny, not the performed laugh, but the real one that catches you off guard.

These aren’t small things dressed up as big ones. They are the thing.

The milestone joy is real, but it’s a punctuation while daily joy is the sentence. And most of us have been so focused on getting the punctuation right that we’ve barely written anything at all.

Here’s what I keep coming back to: joy is not something that happens to you when conditions are finally right. It’s something that becomes available when you stop moving through the moment and start inhabiting it.

If that sounds simple, it’s because it is that simple. It’s also almost entirely counter to how a productive, functional, high-achieving life trains you to be. So the work, if we can call it that, is almost subtractive. Less optimization, less forward lean, less filling of space.

Joy doesn’t require better circumstances, it requires a different quality of attention. The life you’re waiting to feel is mostly already here. The question is whether you’re in it.

A lot of what I share here is what I help people untangle privately.

My work is for high-achieving, highly sensitive, deeply capable people: creatives and leaders in high-pressure environments. People who are good at succeeding, but exhausted by what it keeps costing them internally.

The work is behind the scenes. It lives in its own container and is intuitive, grounded, and deeply human, blending trauma-informed heart resilience, nervous system attunement, energetic awareness, and emotionally safe truth-telling.

I have spent years being fascinated by these women. And I have spent years, if I am honest, keeping a careful distance from my own joy. Rationing it, waiting until things were more settled, until I had done enough. As if joy were a reward for suffering correctly rather than something I was allowed to simply live inside.

What slowly became clear to me through my own stumbling toward aliveness is that the women who move through the world with that quality of presence are almost never the ones life was easiest on. They are, more often than not, the ones who had every reason to harden, and they didn’t.

I think about the women I have known who carried real joy. When I trace their stories, what I find is not protection from pain, but survival of it.

Marriages that slowly unmade them. Grief that rearranged everything they thought they knew about themselves. Years of loving people who could not love them back the way they needed. Losses that no one acknowledged because competent women are not supposed to be struggling, and the world needed them to keep going, and so they did. They kept going.

And somehow, improbably, they did not become hard.

That’s the thing I cannot stop thinking about. Not the suffering, we understand suffering; we have language, rituals, and a whole cultural script for the woman who has been through something and emerged wiser and more measured and appropriately serious. What we do not have language for is the woman who has been through that same fire and come out the other side still capable being moved by delight.

We mistake that for naïveté or assume she must not have suffered enough. We do not consider that she might have done something much harder than survive, she might have chosen, on the other side of everything, to remain alive inside her own life.

The quality I keep returning to, the thing these women share, is what I can only call emotional permeability. A willingness to be moved by beauty, music, God, by the sky going pink for six minutes before it disappears. They have not built walls against feeling. They have, somehow, stayed in contact with sensation.

This is rarer than it sounds. Because one of the most natural responses to accumulated pain is to stop letting things land. The world becomes smaller. You become more guarded, more preoccupied, more numb. You begin managing your life rather than living it. Pleasure starts to feel unsafe, or unnecessary, or like something you will get to later when everything else is handled… and everything else is never handled.

Slowly, almost without noticing, you stop experiencing life directly. You start processing it instead. And joy, which requires presence, becomes something you remember feeling once, a long time ago, before things got complicated.

I know this from the inside. I have lived entire seasons in my own head, at a careful remove from my own experience, competently managing everything while something in me quietly starved. And I also know what it feels like when something cracks open again. When you let something actually reach you, it is almost unbearable at first and then, it is the only thing that feels real.

The movie isn’t really about a beauty pageant; it’s about what happens inside a family, a person, when everything quietly reorganizes itself around the project of becoming someone who finally feels like enough.

The father is selling a system he needs to be true. The son has decided he won’t speak until he becomes someone worth hearing. The uncle has built his identity around being exceptional, and one rejection takes the structure down with it. Each of them is leaning into a version of themselves that doesn’t exist yet, organizing their lives around the idea that they’ll earn the right to feel solid once they get there.

Except Olive.

Olive hasn’t learned to negotiate with herself. She wants to dance, and the wanting is clean. There’s no adjustment happening around it. She’s not measuring how it will land. She’s not checking for approval. She’s already inside the thing she loves.

Her joy moves before it’s evaluated.

The van does something similar. It won’t start unless everyone gets out and pushes. No one gets to stay composed or separate from the effort. They run alongside it together, exposed, slightly ridiculous, trying to catch something already in motion. It only works if they’re all in it at once.

By the time they arrive at the pageant, everything has been refined into something acceptable. The smiles are practiced. The routines are tight. Every expression has been shaped with an audience in mind. It’s joy that has already been edited—something that can be seen, approved, rewarded.

And then Olive walks out.

She takes a breath, but nothing about her adjusts. What she brings is unfiltered. It doesn’t match the room, and it doesn’t try to. She isn’t performing joy. She’s inside it.

Everything else in the film bends around that moment.

The father’s system doesn’t land. The son discovers he’s colorblind, which quietly removes the future he’s been organizing himself around. The uncle doesn’t regain what he lost. None of the carefully constructed paths resolve the way they were supposed to.

Olive is the only one whose desire stays intact.

Not because she’s the most qualified. She isn’t. Her dream is the least likely one in the room. But she’s the only one who never reshaped herself to make it more acceptable. There’s nothing to recover because nothing was split off in the first place.

When her family joins her on stage, something releases. They stop organizing themselves around how they’re being seen and move toward her instead. It’s messy, uncoordinated, and slightly inappropriate. It also feels like the first honest moment they’ve had together.

Nothing about their lives is fixed there. The external conditions don’t improve. But the internal pressure changes. You can feel the grip loosen.

Joy shows up in the middle of that. Not once things are resolved, and after anyone becomes who they thought they needed to be. It shows up in bodies that are tired, in people who are off track, in a moment that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

Joy doesn’t wait for things to make sense. It just asks if you’re willing to be in it.
