I talked to Maria about her career and how beauty shows up in it.

How did your career in the sports industry begin?

I covered high school sports for a local newspaper and TV station while in college, but didn’t necessarily see sports media as a viable career path. I dabbled in news and lifestyle content jobs for a few years before landing a part-time gig as a sports update anchor at SiriusXM in 2015. That was the true launchpad for my career.

How does beauty play a role in your career?

I’m a front-facing figure and how I present matters. It’s not about looking pretty so much as it’s about looking professional. Not only does this make a positive impression on those I’m communicating to, it allows me to feel confident which in turn makes me more effective.

If you’re on camera with proper lighting, you need to apply certain makeup or else your features disappear. Eye liner, blush, and lip color are absolute musts. That said, I’m not trying to spend an exorbitant amount of time on beauty. The most important thing is preparation for my assignment. The compliments I receive about knowledge of the subject matter are more flattering than the comments made about how I look.

In some cases I’m lucky enough to have professional hair and makeup artists ensuring I’m camera ready. Their work should not be overlooked because it improves overall production quality while also giving talent the ability to focus on performance.

Do you think women who work in sports, even the athletes, are judged differently based on their appearance than men are? Or do you think this is sort of evolving and not becoming a topic of conversation in the sports space?

The sports space is steadily evolving to where women aren’t being judged as much on their appearance as on the substance they bring to the job, but they’re still held to a higher visual standard than male counterparts. Men for the most part can get away with looking less put-together. And when women DO look really on point and attractive, they sometimes get reduced to that as if it’s the only reason they’re in the position, rather than their qualifications being acknowledged.

Do you have any specific products you reach for when doing your makeup? What about your skincare?

My makeup style is natural but elevated. I don’t want to be unrecognizable, I just want to enhance what I have going on. Skincare comes first. I wear SPF 30 or above on my face every day. One product I love for moisturizing is Dermalogica Circular Hydration Serum. Some other go-to’s are Lancome Lash Idole Mascara, Thrive Infinity Waterproof Eyebrow Liner and Trish McEvoy lipstick in shade “Innocent.” I also just discovered Ilia Skin Blur Concealer - obsessed.

I had the chance to talk to JohVonne about how beauty shows up in her career. Enjoy!

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently when competing?

I definitely felt pressure to present myself differently, probably around high school. I grew up playing soccer, volleyball, and even ran track, but dance was really my sport for all of my life. And with dance, I felt the most pressure when it came to my hair. I wasn’t confident in my natural hair growing up because I was bullied for how big it was. I would wear my natural hair to school and I would always get teased about how big it was or how it “would get in the way” from other students seeing the board – all things that I should’ve been more confident in but at that age, I wasn’t at a secure point in my life and I don’t blame myself, I was like 9 or 10. So, I would ask my mom to straighten my hair, or I just kept it in braids.

During that time, around 2018 - 2019, more girls my age started wearing wigs, frontals, and weaves, so I wanted to give it a try. Sometimes, it didn’t look the absolute best, but again, not secure in myself, I was just happy to go along with the trends. Being a dancer and having to figure out hairstyles that are dance- and budget-friendly can be difficult. Even in college, it had its ups and downs, but I honestly ended up figuring it out. I was on the majorette dance team at San Diego State University for all 4 years of college, the SDSU Diamonds, and even though we changed up our styles a lot, we did it together, and it made me more confident and proactive with my hair.

I learned how to do my own hairstyles and my teammates’ hairstyles. I learned how to take better care of my hair in between hairstyles and even started wearing my natural hair more at the end of my senior year. Now, as a professional dancer, I feel the freest. I know my hair type, I know what will look good with the choreography, and I know that I can do different styles with my hair. I don’t feel that pressure now, especially since I’m a lot more confident in myself. Back then, I did feel like I had to look a certain way, but now that’s changed.

Has being an athlete affected your skin at all?

100%. I have acne, but I don’t think dance is the sole reason behind that, but I'm sure it plays a part. I know that when I’m stressed, my skin shows it. So, if a routine isn’t sticking with me and I’m stressed, you can tell. But also, if I don’t eat or sleep healthily, it shows. Dance has caused me to dance in the heat with makeup on or not get 8 hours of sleep, but it’s also a stress reliever for me.

I believe my skin is more acclimated to makeup now. But with hormonal acne, it’s difficult to control it. Back then, it was a mix of hormonal, diet, and honestly just a stage of life. Now, I’m focusing on using better products and figuring out what makeup works for my skin and what doesn’t.

What does your skincare routine look like? Does it ever change based on how much you’re dancing?

My skincare routine doesn’t necessarily change with the season vs off-season, more so with the weather or seasonal changes. During the off-season, I do wear makeup for a shorter period of time, and I’m not sweating in the makeup as well. Overall, it’s the same routine though.

I have combination skin, so I use rose water as a toner for moisture and also La Roche-Posay Face Cream because it helps me the most.

Do you find that, as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, the beauty standards for players have changed? Or is this something that doesn’t really come up?

When it comes to the dancing community, from what I’ve personally seen and experienced, it has been very welcoming to diverse dancers. They’re one of the few communities that praise women for muscular, strong bodies. The only thing that I can say that may have changed is just being accepting of all body types. Not every dancer needs to have a certain cookie-cutter body type. I know it’s different depending on what team you’re dancing for and the uniform you have to wear. However, things have changed a little bit. I don’t believe there’s a “standard,” but I love seeing dancers and the community embrace muscles and strength because sometimes people try to masculinize women, like me, who are more toned. But it just shows that you’re built for your sport and you do it well.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

Before practice and court rehearsals, I wash my face beforehand so I can feel fresh and confident walking into the arena or studio. I usually like practicing with a fresh face, so no makeup at all. You will see me with a pimple patch or under-eye patch before the game. My makeup definitely looks better when my skin is clean.

My makeup routine goes: primer, eyebrow gel, foundation, eyebrow routine, concealer, blush, contour, setting powder, and then setting spray. I’ve been learning how to accentuate my features instead of hiding them. And with game day makeup, it’s a bit more dramatic than my everyday routine. So I make sure my blush and highlight can be seen more. I usually wear my hair in some type of Fulani hairstyle or all curly and down. I plan my “hairstyle calendar” around my games, so I make sure whatever style I have won’t sweat my hair out or will be uncomfortable to dance in. During the WNBA season, I do less knotless box braids and weaves too.

Women’s soccer is getting more eyes on it than ever. Is there ever pressure to look a certain way on the field?

Yes, I’ve felt some pressure to present myself a certain way, especially as a female athlete. There’s often extra attention on hair and appearance, and when I was younger, I noticed those expectations. Over time, I’ve learned to prioritize comfort and what makes me feel confident, rather than trying to fit any specific standard.

Has being a soccer player who plays outside in the sun and other climates affected your skin?

Being an athlete has affected my skin. Between sweat, sun exposure, and traveling for games, I’ve had to deal with breakouts, dryness, and occasional irritation. I try to stay mindful about taking care of my skin and using products that work for me.

What does your skincare routine look like? Do you switch it up after the season?

During the season, I keep my routine simple: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I use The Ordinary line for most of my skincare-especially their cleanser, moisturizer, and Sun Care SPF. I always wash my face after practices or games. In the off-season, I might try out new products, but I still stick to things that keep my skin hydrated and protected.

Do you find that beauty standards for athletes has changed as you progressed in your soccer career?

As I’ve moved to different teams and played at higher levels, I’ve noticed that beauty standards aren’t as much of a focus. Performance and skill matter more, but there can still be pressure, especially with social media. I think overall that there’s more acceptance now for athletes to show up as they are.

What do you do before competing to feel your most confident?

Before competing, I always wash my face-it’s a small ritual that helps me feel fresh and ready. I usually wear a bit of mascara and a little blush for a touch of color. My hair is usually in braids, so I keep my edges neat but try not to use too much gel because of the sweat during games. Mostly, I focus on feeling comfortable and prepared.

“I am also the Head Coach of the Newton South Varsity Dance Team. I coach and mentor younger dancers, helping the next generation find their confidence, develop their skills, and discover their own love for dance. I feel really lucky to experience dance from both sides: performing professionally and helping young athletes grow,” she says. “Being able to learn from the pros while also preparing the next generation to become leaders themselves is something I’m incredibly passionate about.”

The WNBA is getting more eyes on it each year. Do you feel any pressure to look a certain way as a professional dancer for the league?

I think the pressure to look a certain way has always been a part of the dance world, especially because presentation is such a big part of performing. Personally, I’ve always loved getting my hair, makeup, and nails done. It makes me feel more confident, productive, and put together, and whether I’m on stage or on the court, I want to feel like the best version of myself. When I was younger, I think I absorbed a lot of those expectations without even realizing it. Being surrounded by dancers who were always “performance ready” made appearance feel like part of the job. If you wanted to be taken seriously, you felt like you needed to look professional at all times. Looking back, I think there’s a difference between wanting to look and feel your best because it makes you confident and feeling like you have to look a certain way to be successful. I’ve experienced both. Now, I try to be more intentional about making sure that appearance is something that enhances my confidence rather than something that determines my worth as a dancer or athlete.

Have you experienced any skin issues that may have been caused by your active lifestyle?

Personally, I’ve always been fortunate to have pretty good skin, so being a dancer hasn’t caused me many major skin concerns. The one thing I definitely notice is how travel, especially flying, affects my skin. Being on an airplane can make my skin feel much drier and more irritated than usual, so I have to be more intentional about keeping it hydrated. With the combination of traveling for the WNBA, performing, and having a busy schedule, I’ve learned that keeping my skin moisturized and taking a little extra time for skincare while traveling helps me feel refreshed and ready to perform.

What does your skincare routine look like?

My skincare routine is pretty consistent throughout the year, so I don’t change it between season and off-season. I like keeping things simple and sticking with products that I know work well for my skin. I’m a huge fan of Cetaphil because their products keep my skin really moisturized without feeling too heavy. Having a hydrated, smooth base is especially important to me because I’m often wearing makeup for game days, appearances, performances, or regular work days.

How do you think beauty standards have developed over the years in the dance world?

I definitely think beauty standards and trends have changed as I’ve gotten older and been at different levels. There always seems to be a new beauty trend that becomes popular, especially in the sports and dance world. I’ve seen everything from heavier, more glam makeup looks to the more natural, minimal makeup look. I think social media has also played a big role in how quickly these trends change. There’s always a new look that people are trying, whether it’s a full glam look or a more effortless, natural appearance. Personally, I think it’s less about one specific standard and more about how beauty trends continue to evolve.

On game days, do you do anything specific that helps boost your confidence?

Before game days, I always wash my face, do my skincare, and apply a full face of makeup that I set to last through long game days. I usually touch up every few hours. I wear my hair down, either curled or blown out, because “hairography” is a big part of our routines and makes my hair feel like an extension of the performance. For WNBA games, I typically wear Rare Beauty foundation, concealer, mascara, required blue eyeliner, and bronze eyeshadow. I love a glowy, slightly more tan look because it really pops under the arena lights and makes me feel confident and game-day ready!

Today, she primarily works in sports media, including sideline reporting, interviewing athletes, hosting, and creating sports content. She’s had the opportunity to work on ESPN+ broadcasts, cover collegiate athletics, interview student-athletes, and work with different sports.

“My ultimate goal is to continue growing as a sports reporter and broadcaster and eventually work at the highest levels of sports media, like being a backstage reporter for the WWE, sideline in the AUSL, and cover national championship games. I’m really passionate about telling the stories behind the athletes, not just what happens on the field, but who they are away from it.”

I had the chance to chat with Berkleigh about how beauty shows up in her role working in women’s sports.

When did you start working in the sports industry?

I’ve technically been around the sports industry for a long time, but I started pursuing sports media seriously when I realized I could combine my love of sports with storytelling and being on camera.

I grew up around baseball and played softball, so sports were always familiar to me. What I didn’t necessarily know growing up was that being a sports reporter could actually be a career for me.

Once I discovered broadcasting, it clicked.

I loved the idea of being on the sidelines, talking to athletes, telling stories, and getting people to see the human side of sports. Since then, I’ve tried to say yes to as many opportunities as possible. I’ve worked in collegiate sports, baseball, live broadcasting, interviews, social media, and hosting, and every experience has helped me figure out what kind of broadcaster I want to become.

How does beauty play a role in your career as a reporter?

Beauty definitely plays a role in my career, but I think for me it’s much more about confidence than trying to fit a certain standard.

When I’m going on camera, I want to feel polished and prepared. Doing my hair, putting on makeup, picking out an outfit, or even just making sure I feel comfortable in what I’m wearing can give me that extra boost of confidence before I step in front of a camera.

At the same time, I’ve learned that confidence ultimately has to come from somewhere deeper than your appearance. You can have the perfect hair and makeup and still walk into an interview questioning yourself.

For me, beauty is part of the preparation. It’s one of the ways I get into “work mode.” But the thing that actually makes me feel confident on camera is knowing that I belong there and that I’ve worked hard to earn my seat at the table.

Do you think women who work in sports are judged differently based on their appearance than men are?

I absolutely think women in sports are still judged differently based on appearance, although I do think the conversation is evolving.

Women can sometimes feel like they’re being evaluated on two things at once: how good they are at their job and how they look while doing it. A male broadcaster can show up, do a great interview, and people primarily talk about the interview. A woman can do the same thing, and sometimes the conversation becomes her hair, makeup, outfit, or appearance.

That doesn’t mean I think caring about beauty is a bad thing. I love makeup, fashion, hair, and all of that. The problem is when appearance becomes more important than ability.

I think women should be able to enjoy beauty and femininity while also being taken seriously as professionals.

I also think social media has changed the conversation. Women in sports now have more control over their own brands and how they present themselves. We’re seeing women embrace being athletic, feminine, fashionable, funny, knowledgeable, and ambitious all at the same time.

You don’t have to choose between being feminine and being taken seriously.

What skincare or makeup products do you reach for most often?

When I’m doing makeup for work, especially for something on camera, I like products that are going to last and photograph well without feeling too heavy.

My everyday routine tends to be pretty simple—I like a good base, concealer, bronzer, blush, mascara, and something on my lips. If I have a longer day of broadcasting or interviews, I’ll spend a little more time making sure everything stays in place. Even with the help from my glam team!

I’m also a big believer in skincare being just as important as makeup. Having a good skincare routine makes such a difference in how your makeup sits and how confident you feel without makeup too.

For makeup, I definitely have some favorites that I keep coming back to. I love my YSL foundation, Dior highlight palette, and YSL blush. For setting spray, I swear by both the Charlotte Tilbury setting spray and ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr setting spray, especially when I know I’m going to be on camera for a long period of time.

For skincare, I have oily skin, so I really try to focus on keeping my skin hydrated without adding a ton of extra oil. I like lightweight products that leave my skin feeling clean and fresh rather than heavy. My routine usually centers around a good cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, and SPF, and I’m a big fan of products with niacinamide because they work well with my skin type.

I think good skincare is especially important when you’re working in front of a camera. When your skin feels good, your makeup sits better, and you automatically feel a little more confident walking onto the field or in front of a camera.

I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned working in sports media is that you’re constantly going to be surrounded by opinions about your work, your appearance, your voice, your interviewing style, everything. Beauty can be fun and empowering, but ultimately, I never want my appearance to be the reason people remember me.

I want people to remember the stories I told, the athletes I interviewed, and the work I put into becoming a better broadcaster.

And the same can be said for beauty writers. We once were able to pitch a story to a publication and get it approved quickly, write about a larger number of topics, and have somewhat of a steady career. Now, that isn’t always the case. Budgets are smaller, the topics have to be SEO friendly or drive commission (meaning product roundups are the norm), and everyone is getting laid off.

I say all of this with hope that people can still thrive in the world of freelance beauty writers—it’s just a bit trickier now. However, there are numerous ways you can make yourself stand out, secure new bylines, and write for your dream publications.

When I started freelance beauty writing, I couldn’t find many articles, blog posts, etc. that actually laid out ways to make money as a writer, in a sustainable way at least. This is why I’ve always been so adamant about answering any questions, providing insight, and helping whenever possible.

“I’m a goaltender and have been part of the Swiss Women’s National Team for many years. I’m a three-time Olympian and an Olympic bronze medalist, and I’ve had the opportunity to play hockey in several different countries throughout my career, including Switzerland, the U.S. and Sweden. Starting next season, I’ll be taking on a new challenge and playing professionally for Detroit in the PWHL,” she says.

I had the chance to talk to Andrea about how beauty plays a role in her career as an athlete. Enjoy!

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently as an athlete?

Yes, definitely. Growing up playing boys’ hockey, I always felt like I needed to fit in, and part of that meant not looking or acting “too girly.” I rarely did my hair, wore makeup, or had my nails done because I felt like I had to be more low-key and almost hide that side of myself to be accepted as one of the guys.

Looking back, I actually regret that a little because I’ve realized that I really enjoy those things. I like doing my hair, wearing makeup, getting my nails done, and dressing up when I feel like it. I think as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more comfortable just being myself. My style is still pretty natural, but if I want to wear makeup or dress a certain way, I do. I don’t feel like being a serious athlete and being feminine have to contradict each other. At this point, I’m much more like: this is who I am, and who cares what anyone else thinks?

Has being an athlete affected your skin at all from being so active?

100%. My skin is naturally very sensitive and seems to react to the slightest environmental change, so being a professional athlete definitely doesn’t make skincare easy. During hockey season, I’m sweating every day and spending hours in a tight helmet, which can cause a lot of irritation and breakouts, especially during preseason when it’s still really hot.

I’ve also had acne-prone skin for as long as I can remember, and things like travel, changes in climate, diet, stress, and my menstrual cycle can all have a huge impact. My skin has also been more difficult to manage since coming off hormonal birth control.

Skincare for me is honestly a constant trial-and-error process. I’ll finally find products and a routine that work really well, and then suddenly my skin decides, “Actually, we don’t like this anymore,” and I’m back to figuring it out again, lol.

Summer usually gives my skin a bit of a reset because I’m spending much less time in my helmet and hockey gear and more time outdoors. Over the years, I’ve definitely learned that with my skin, there isn’t one perfect routine that works all year. I have to pay attention to what it needs and adapt depending on my training, travel, hormones, and environment

What does your skincare routine look like during the season? Does it change during the offseason?

For my skin, I’ve definitely learned that less is more. I’ve tried more complicated and even customized skincare routines in the past, but they actually did the complete opposite of what I wanted. My skin seems happiest when I keep things simple and gentle, so I try to avoid anything too harsh and tend to gravitate toward vegan formulas.

Right now, my skin still likes my current routine, fingers crossed it stays that way, so I actually keep it pretty similar during the season and off-season. At night, I use a moisturizer mixed with a couple of drops of vitamin C serum, both vegan formulas from a Swiss brand. I also use a cleanser from the same brand, especially right after practice to get the sweat and everything from being in my helmet off my skin. On non-practice days, I’ll usually cleanse once or twice a day.

During the day, I’ve recently been obsessed with a Charlotte Tilbury product that works as a primer, moisturizer and sunscreen, which makes it perfect for me because again, the fewer products I have to layer, the better!

And honestly, that’s pretty much it. I’ll occasionally exfoliate or use a peeling product, but I’m careful not to overdo it, especially during winter and hockey season when my skin barrier is already dealing with enough. I’ve learned that my skin responds much better when I support it rather than constantly trying to “fix” it.

Do you find that, as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, the beauty standards for players have changed?

For sure. I think the attention on us as people, and not just as players hidden underneath all our equipment, has grown tremendously over the past few years. We have so many more opportunities now to show our personalities, our style, and who we are away from the ice, which I actually really enjoy.

At the same time, I think that naturally creates more pressure to look good. Social media has become such a big part of professional sports, and the reality is that the better you present yourself, the more attention and sometimes opportunities you receive. That can definitely create an expectation to always look put together.

But I also see the positive side of it. It gives us an opportunity to build our personal brands and allows fans to connect with us beyond hockey. If people are interested in our outfits, makeup, skincare, or what we’re wearing to the rink, that’s another way of bringing attention to us as athletes and ultimately to women’s hockey as well.

You can especially see that on game days now. Game-day outfits have become a much bigger thing, not only the clothes, but hair, makeup, accessories, and the overall look. Those conversations have definitely become more common in the locker room too. We talk about someone’s next outfit, a cool beauty product, or something new we’ve discovered. Beauty and fashion have simply become a much more visible part of being a female professional athlete than they were when I was younger.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

I don’t really have one specific beauty routine before competing. I usually just go with whatever I feel like I need that day. The biggest thing for me is feeling fresh and awake, so a lot of the time I’ll wash my face before getting ready for a game.

I pretty much never wear a full face of makeup to play. If anything, I’ll put on some mascara and maybe a little eyeliner, just because it makes me feel a bit more awake and put together. But who knows, maybe going into the PWHL will change that and I’ll start experimenting with some more game-day makeup looks!

Hair is definitely not my area of expertise, though. I’m honestly terrible at doing hairstyles, so I keep it very simple: ponytail, braids, a bun, or just wearing it down before the game. Nothing crazy. For me, it’s really less about having a specific routine and more about doing whatever makes me feel comfortable, fresh and confident that day.

Professionally, she’s spent the last decade working in sports media, from local television to digital and social media, covering everything from the NFL and college sports to MLB, NBA, and more. “These days, my career is a mix of broadcasting, hosting, content creation, and brand work. I’m also a fitness coach, which has become another really fun extension of what I do.”

I had the opportunity to talk to Hayley about working in women’s sports and how beauty shows up in unexpected ways.

When did you start working in the sports industry?

I started working professionally in sports media right out of college in 2016, so this year marks about a decade in the industry.

In a way, I think I always knew sports would be part of my life because I grew up around them. My dad was a football coach, and I was the girl who genuinely loved being at practices and games and learning the sport.

What I didn’t always know was that broadcasting would be the path. Once I realized I could combine storytelling, being on camera, and my love of sports, it clicked. And my career has evolved a lot since then. When I started, the traditional path was television. Now I can cover a game, host a show, create my own content, and work directly with major sports brands. I really love that the definition of being a “sports broadcaster” has expanded.

Does beauty play a role in your career? How?

Beauty definitely plays a role in my career because so much of my job happens on camera, but I try to look at it as a tool rather than something that defines my confidence.

There is something about having my hair and makeup done and putting on an outfit I feel great in that makes me feel polished and ready to work. It’s almost like putting on a uniform. Whether I’m walking onto a set, interviewing someone, or heading into an important meeting, feeling put together helps me switch into that professional mode.

At the same time, I think working in sports has taught me that confidence can’t come entirely from how you look. You can have perfect hair and makeup, but if you haven’t done your research or don’t know what you’re talking about, people figure that out very quickly. For me, the best confidence comes from feeling prepared first, and beauty is just that extra layer that helps me feel like myself.

As a woman on camera, there can sometimes feel like there’s this impossible balance. You’re expected to look polished and attractive, but if you appear too focused on fashion or beauty, people can question your credibility. And I don’t think men in sports media are asked to navigate that same balance nearly as often.

Social media has amplified it too because people now have direct access to comment on everything about you, from your hair and makeup to your body or what you’re wearing, sometimes without saying anything about the actual work you did.

But I do think it’s evolving, and that’s the part I find exciting. We’re seeing more female athletes and women in sports media embrace fashion, beauty and femininity without feeling like they have to downplay those things to prove they belong in sports. Knowing sports and loving beauty aren’t mutually exclusive. I’d love to see us get to the point where a woman can be incredibly knowledgeable about football and also love makeup, fashion or getting dressed up, and neither one makes the other less authentic

Do you have any specific products you reach for when doing your makeup? What about your skincare?

I’m actually much more of a skincare person than a makeup person. My mom was adamant about sunscreen and taking care of my skin from a really young age. I struggled with acne, so I actually started using retinol around 15, and that combination of retinol and sunscreen made a huge difference for me. I definitely wasn’t perfect about it in college, but as a young adult I’ve become really consistent again.

I’m very fair, blonde, blue-eyed, and freckled, so sun protection is probably the biggest thing for me. Youth to the People and Paula’s Choice are two of my go-to skincare brands. I use Youth to the People for my cleanser, vitamin C, and other serums, and I love their sunscreen. With Paula’s Choice, I use their moisturizers and salicylic acid. I’ve also dealt with some newer pigmentation and melasma as my hormones have changed with endometriosis, so that’s made me even more intentional about taking care of my skin.

For makeup, I’m definitely a no-makeup makeup girl. I love a tinted sunscreen and keeping everything pretty simple. I also use a surprising amount of drugstore makeup, especially e.l.f. When I first started working in television, I was making around $30,000 a year and suddenly needed an entire makeup kit because I was on camera every day. I couldn’t afford to spend $50 on every product, so I learned very quickly how many great products you can find at the drugstore. I’ve continued using them because if something works, I don’t see a reason to spend more just because I can.

And I’ve been using basically the same CoverGirl mascara since I was about 16. Some things just don’t need to change!

My philosophy is really that less is more. If I take care of my skin underneath, I don’t feel like I need nearly as much makeup on top of it.

I got to talk to Maddy about how beauty shows up in her career as a dancer. Enjoy!

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently when competing?

Absolutely. Growing up in competitive dance, you’re introduced to full glam makeup at a really young age. By the time I got to high school, I definitely felt pressure to always look “perfect” with a full face of makeup, styled hair, and everything put together. I felt like I had to fit a certain image and meet the expectations that came with being a dancer. I also remember feeling like I needed to have perfect skin, which added another layer of pressure on top of everything else.

Has being an athlete affected your skin at all?

Being an athlete has absolutely affected my skin. In high school, I struggled with pretty bad acne from constantly sweating, wearing heavy stage makeup, and spending so much time in costumes that weren’t very breathable. It was frustrating because I was active all the time, but my skin felt like it was constantly working against me.

I honestly didn’t know how to properly take care of my skin until the end of my junior year and into my senior year of high school. That’s when I started seeing a dermatologist and really learned how my skin worked and what it actually needed instead of just trying every product I saw online.

Being on the ASU Dance Team has also taught me how important it is to protect my skin from the sun. During football season, we’re outside for long periods of time in the Arizona heat. Between the sweat, performance makeup, and constant sun exposure, it’s really easy for my skin to become irritated or clogged. Wearing sunscreen has become a non-negotiable for me on game days. I always use CeraVe sunscreen before we head out, and it’s made a huge difference in protecting my skin while we’re performing outdoors.

What does your skincare routine look like during season vs. off-season?

My skincare routine actually stays pretty similar whether I’m in season or off-season. Through a lot of research and working with my dermatologist, I learned that my skin is combination skin—both oily and dry—which helped me understand why certain products weren’t working for me.

I’ve found that keeping my routine simple has made the biggest difference. Right now, I love La Roche-Posay’s cleanser and moisturizer, along with PanOxyl 5% benzoyl peroxide wash when I’m dealing with a breakout or after especially sweaty workouts. The cleanser helps remove the oil and buildup from long practices, while the moisturizer keeps my skin hydrated so it doesn’t become overly dry.

I also never skip my CeraVe sunscreen before outdoor practices and football games. I’ve realized that, at least for my skin, less is more. A consistent, simple routine has been much more effective than using a lot of different products.

Do you find that, as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, the beauty standards for players have changed?

I definitely think dance comes with a certain image and a lot of beauty standards. Growing up, ballet was my primary style of dance, and that environment definitely influenced how I viewed my appearance. There was always this feeling that you had to look a certain way, and I think that can be difficult for young dancers to navigate.

As I’ve gotten older, though, I’ve learned to appreciate myself for so much more than how I look. While presentation is still part of being a dancer, I’ve realized that confidence, kindness, and hard work are so much more important than trying to fit a specific mold.

Now that I’m also a dance teacher, that’s something I’m really passionate about passing on to my students. I want to create an environment where young dancers—both girls and boys—feel confident in themselves. Body image and appearance should never determine someone’s value or potential as a dancer. I want them to focus on becoming strong, healthy, and confident athletes first.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

Before every competition, I make sure to thoroughly cleanse my face, and if I’ve gotten a spray tan, I always avoid spraying my face so my pores don’t get clogged. Then it’s time for competition makeup, slicking our hair back into a bun, and putting on our costume. Once everything comes together, I honestly feel like I can go out there and conquer anything. Being surrounded by my teammates, who have become some of my best friends, makes all the nerves and stress melt away.

Game days have a slightly different routine. Since the crowd is looking down at us from the stands, everything has to be a little more dramatic so it can be seen from far away. We wear a bold red lip, full performance makeup with false lashes, and our hair is big, curled, and full of hairspray. It might sound glamorous, but there’s actually a lot of strategy behind it. Those little details help us look polished and expressive from every seat in the stadium. It’s all part of the performance, and once we’re fully ready, it helps us feel confident stepping onto the field.

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently?

100% I have felt pressure to look “presentable” when competing. We have a lot of photographers at matches, and these photos get posted online for a lot of people to see. Especially with the social media climate nowadays, you just never know what people will comment. We already get judged hard on our performance, which is what we should only be judged on, but now we have to consider how we look (hair, skin, outfit, etc). When I was younger, I was carefree. I never thought about how I looked besides having my favorite game day braids in my hair, and I never thought about how other girls looked while playing. I would say when I got into college was when I started to consider how I “looked” while I was competing. I was someone who was unfortunate enough to break my nose and had to wear a big face mask while I played my freshman year (mine was not a cool Batman-looking mask; it was clear and covered most of my face, and it looked crazy). I heard a lot of nasty comments from the stands about my mask, how I looked, and how I ran. I still remember exactly what they said. It was something you pretend to laugh off like it doesn’t faze you, but it actually does.

That was when I paid more attention to how my hair looked, how my skin looked (I had acne problems for years), and overall just my appearance. Once I became a professional, it was a whole other level of looking “presentable”. You are around way more people, cameras, and media. I was also around more high-profile players who have perfect hair, perfect skin, and expensive clothes. It is super easy to start comparing yourself to that and think that is how a “pro player” should look.

Has being an athlete affected your skin at all?

Yes! I struggled with acne since high school. It was my biggest insecurity growing up. And I still struggle with it to this day. When I was younger, I do think it was more of a hormonal issue. Now it’s more about maintaining a good skin barrier with our active lifestyle. I struggled with so many routines to help with post-training after sweating and being in the sun for hours. Travel was a big problem as well because I swear there is something in the air at the airport, and anytime you get on a plane, the next day 5 pimples would show up. I am pretty strict about putting sunscreen on, especially on my face, because I get melasma on my upper lip. If I don’t use the proper skin care and sunscreen, I literally look like I have a mustache. It is a lot of trial and error and relearning, especially based on where I lived. In Portland, it rained a lot and had mild summers. I probably had the best skin of my life at that point. I also had access to an esthetician and an injector that helped me so much. Then when I moved back to North Carolina, I had to change things up a bit with the extreme heat, humidity, etc. It is all forever changing and relearning!

What does your skincare routine look like?

I would say my skincare routine at the moment doesn’t change too much in or out of season! I found sticking to the same routine works best! I would say the big 3 that work best for me are Zo Health Retinol, HaruHaru Wonder Black Rice daily sunscreen, and The Ordinary azelaic acid. If there is one thing I might add into my routine seasonally, it would be First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Balm for the wintertime. My skin can get a little dry, and this saves my skin!

Do you find that as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, the beauty standards have changed for players?

Big fat YES. Since 2019, when I started my career, to now in 2026, the standards have changed immensely. With the amount of media attention and investment women’s soccer has gotten in the last 8-10 years, I think there has been a lot more pressure for athletes to look a certain way on and off the field. I think especially since the majority of women’s soccer players don’t make a fortune playing their sport, they rely on social media brand deals to help supplement their income. That is something a lot of women NEED to do to make a decent income. So we have to spend a lot of time making sure we look presentable, professional, and perfect online and in person.

I think especially since 2020 and COVID, making money online has become easier, and having a media presence is pretty crucial to a player’s career nowadays. It is amazing because it allows us to make a second income, but it also comes with more eyes, more judgment, and more comments. I have actually seen a post by a professional team of a player in a game, and in the comments I saw people talking about her body? Like what? This is what people are noticing or talking about? It’s crazy to me, but it is our reality, and our appearance and job have become our brand. With that said, it is natural that if you’re on TV, streaming, or social media, you want to look good. It is just unfortunate that it is something players have to think about now, on top of just performing in their sport and doing their job.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

For practice, it’s changed a lot over the years. I used to do a ponytail, but now I usually slick back my hair into a bun! Some days it’s perfect. Some days it takes 20 tries and still looks awful (and that’s the days our photographers come out haha). I also always put sunscreen on my face right before going out to the field.

For games, I like to do my skincare before leaving the hotel. Sometimes I put some concealer on if my acne is really bad. Usually I just like to put sunscreen on and call it a day. I need my hair to be perfect more than activating my body. It’s the definition of look good, feel good, play good. When my slick back is snatched, and my bun looks good, I am so ready to kick ass. That’s really it. I like to keep it minimal. In the past, I used to do makeup: blush, highlighter, mascara, and I will say, those photos I slayed in. But overall, I’m happy with just looking natural in the field and doing my job.

Is there pressure in the dance world to do your hair and makeup a certain way?

Yes, absolutely. The competitive dance world is constantly evolving, and keeping up with beauty trends can be challenging. There is definitely pressure because you’re surrounded by it all the time—from teammates, social media, and even at competitions. When I was younger, I was fortunate to have a great support system, so I never really questioned the way I looked. It wasn’t until I got older, especially after graduating and stepping into professional dance opportunities, that I started to feel more of that pressure. It can be difficult because you can be the best dancer in the room, but sometimes you feel like you just don’t fit a team’s “look.” That can make it frustrating when it feels like you constantly need to change something about yourself, whether it’s dyeing or cutting your hair, building more muscle, or wearing more makeup. Throughout my life, I’ve always believed that a dancer should look strong and healthy. Dance is a demanding, full-body athletic sport, so my focus has always been on taking care of my body, fueling it properly, and being the strongest version of myself. While appearance can sometimes feel like part of the job, I’ve learned that confidence, health, and performance are what truly matter.

Have you experienced any skin issues as a dancer?

Absolutely. I feel like I’ve experienced just about every skin issue that comes with being an athlete. Between long rehearsals, game days, sweating, and wearing heavy stage makeup, my skin definitely goes through a lot. On game days, I’m usually wearing a full face of makeup for five or more hours, and sometimes that’s multiple times a week. Between the sweat and the makeup, my skin can become congested, irritated, and prone to breakouts. I’ve also dealt with dryness and sensitivity at times, especially when I’m constantly cleansing my skin after performances. It’s taught me how important it is to have a consistent skincare routine that helps keep my skin healthy despite everything it goes through.

What does your skincare routine look like?

During the season, my skincare routine is pretty simple, but it’s focused on keeping my skin hydrated. Since I’m constantly wearing heavy makeup for rehearsals and game days, I try to give my skin a break whenever I can. I usually double cleanse, apply an eye cream, a peptide serum, an intensive moisturizer, and always finish with SPF. On my days off, I try not to wear makeup at all so my skin can breathe and recover. During the off-season, I’m a little more adventurous with my skincare and more willing to try new products. My routine is slightly more involved and usually includes a face wash, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and SPF. The routines aren’t drastically different, but those subtle changes definitely make a difference, and I can see it in my skin. I’m always open to trying new skincare products, but I consistently come back to CeraVe products because they work well for my skin. I also really like PanOxyl face wash, especially for helping keep breakouts under control when I’m wearing makeup so often.

Do you think beauty standards have changed throughout your career as a dancer?

I do think the beauty standards have changed, and I also think they’ll continue to evolve as trends change. Social media has definitely played a big role in that, making beauty standards more visible and, at times, creating even more pressure to keep up. As I’ve gotten older and moved into professional dance, I’ve noticed there’s more emphasis on overall appearance than there was when I was younger. While performance and talent should always come first, it can sometimes feel like there’s an expectation to fit a certain look as well. At the same time, I think there’s been positive progress toward embracing different body types and encouraging athletes to look healthy and strong rather than trying to fit one specific standard. I hope that trend continues as the industry evolves.

Do you do anything to make yourself feel more confident before competing or game day?

Before I compete, I like to give myself about two hours to get ready if I can. I really value that time to myself because it helps me relax, get in the right mindset, and avoid feeling rushed. Making sure my hair and makeup are done, my outfit is ready, and I have everything I need helps me feel confident before I even step onto the court. On game days, I’m definitely in full glam lashes, full makeup, and curled hair. It’s all part of getting into performance mode and feeling my best. For practices, I keep it much more natural. I’ll usually wear a little concealer and mascara, leave my hair down, and wear a cute matching workout set. I’ve always believed that if you look good, you feel good, and when I feel confident, I’m able to perform at my best.

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently when competing?

Growing up, I don’t think I ever thought deeply about what I looked like when playing sports; I was always more focused on playing well than what I looked like. I do think that changed a little once I got to high school and I felt more people watching, whether that was my friends coming to games or just larger crowds in general. Now that social media is such a big part of sports, I think there’s naturally more attention on appearance, but I’ve learned that confidence comes from how I prepare and compete, not from how I look.

Has being an athlete affected your skin in any way?

Definitely. Between sweating every day, constantly traveling, and having to wash my face multiple times a day, my skin has changed a lot over the years. During the season, my skin tends to get more congested and acne-prone from sweating, while all the travel can make it feel dry and irritated. I think the biggest thing I have struggled with is making a skincare routine throughout the day that works for me. I often use face sprays instead of washing my face if I’m rushing between practice and class. Sometimes if I have to get groceries after practice, I’ll do parts of my skincare routine. It’s something I for sure have struggled with and am still trying to navigate.

What does your skincare routine look like? Are there any products you tend to reach for during the season?

My routine is usually the same year-round because even when I’m not in season, I am still training and sweating a lot. I focus on washing my face after every workout, using a gentle moisturizer, using some serums and under-eye cream, some spot treatment for acne in the evenings, and wearing sunscreen whenever I’m outside. During the season, I try to be extra consistent because travel can really affect my skin.

Do you find that, as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, the beauty standards for players have changed? Or is this something that doesn’t really come up?

I think social media has definitely made appearance a bigger conversation than it used to be. You see athletes getting ready for games, sharing beauty routines, and posting polished content, which can make it seem like you have to look a certain way. At the same time, I also think there’s been a really positive shift toward embracing authenticity. More athletes are showing what they actually look like after practice, on travel days, or during recovery, and I love seeing that because it’s much more realistic.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

Before games, I like feeling clean and refreshed, so I’ll wash my face and make sure my skin is moisturized. I usually wear a little mascara, brow gel, and lip gloss but nothing too dramatic. I also am very protective of my skin and get nervous wearing products on my skin while sweating because of breakouts. My hair is almost always in the same slick back game-day style because it’s practical and keeps it out of my face.

I had the opportunity to talk to Tati about working in women’s sports and how beauty shows up in unexpected ways.

How did your career in women’s sports begin? When did you realize you had a passion for the industry?

I started working in the industry really young- I believe I was 16, and my first internship was with the NCAA working a Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Fort Worth, Texas. It’s actually quite ironic: the University of Houston was the first school I covered, and I ended up playing basketball there during my college career. Early in my career, I focused heavily on social media before turning it into a true management and marketing business. I always felt I would end up in sports or entertainment because, honestly, I enjoy the fast-paced, high-visibility lifestyle.

How does beauty play a role in your career?

I think my beauty has opened a lot of doors for me- I am not talking about professional opportunities but the ability to connect with others. Being beautiful instilled in me a profound confidence that I love to share with others. I find beauty in everyone and everything. I don’t wear a lot of makeup or do my hair day-to-day, but I got the nickname “social queen” because I would show up to every event in full glam. At first, many thought it was dumb that I would be in full glam at grassroots basketball events, but the nickname stuck and so did my presence. I do want all the young ladies to know it’s okay to use your beauty to open a door, but it’s extremely important to prove you are more than just pretty to look at. Instead, be extremely intelligent; layers of depth hide behind your beautiful eyes and elevate yourself in the room due to your internal beauty.

Do you think women who work in sports, even the athletes, are judged differently based on their appearance than men are?

I definitely think so. I definitely think the traditional beauty standard for women plays a part in how one is approached, perceived, and spoken to. There is a level of privilege, whether we admit it or not, that beauty comes with, but it’s also a double-edged sword. Let’s take female athletes for example: they could be the best at their craft but not fit traditional beauty standards, and all the comments will be about how they aren’t “easy” to look at and that the industry needs to market “more beautiful” women. On the other end, if you fit all the traditional standards and wear makeup during games, you “aren’t focused on the right thing”. It’s honestly very tricky to navigate both as an athlete and someone who works in sports.

Do you have any specific products you reach for when doing your makeup? What about your skincare?

I am really simple when it comes to skincare- my doctor prescribed me face wash back in high school, and I have been using it ever since. I do swear by the cosx snail mucin though- fire! Makeup-wise, I will forever be a fan of the One Size loose powder—it is AMAZING! I also love the Patrick Ta blush and Rhode Peptide Lip Balm. A hidden gem for my baddies on a budget is the Sephora lip gloss in Pink Pout.

As a volleyball player, have you ever felt pressure to present yourself in a specific way beauty-wise?

Honestly, yes. Especially returning here to the States to play professionally after seven seasons in Europe. Being part of LOVB and the AU Pro Volleyball Championships felt a bit different than I expected. My perception was that athletes’ hair was always meticulously done, nails perfectly polished, with either a light or more dramatic makeup look. It seemed a large emphasis was placed on how you were presenting yourself (hair, makeup, nails, etc.) for games.

Has being an athlete affected your skin?

I would say dryness from two showers per day and harsh winter climates I find myself in for every season I’ve completed.

What does your skincare routine look like during the season? Does it change in the off-season?

I think Vanicream is the best cleanser, maybe ever. I also usually do an oil cleanser as part of a double cleanse when I have makeup on or sunscreen, which is more common in the summer. I use tretinoin at night maybe 1-2x per week, and like many people, I’m a big fan of Korean skincare products for their efficacy and their reasonable price point! One I really love is the Aestura moisturizing cream. That one is the real deal!

Do you find that as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels, beauty standards have evolved for players?

I do. However, it’s not as I’ve aged; it’s when I entered a higher level of play with AU Pro Volleyball and LOVB. In my experience, players at these higher levels are more likely to undergo aesthetic treatments and injectables, self-tanner or spray tans, etc. And truly, it has nothing to do with age! Some of my youngest teammates, right out of college, had already been using Botox, fillers, and the like for a few years. I believe it reflects the times we live in, but it could also simply be that these women are earning more money and have more disposable income to invest in treatments and injectables. I love a good facial! But that’s not the only thing that’s encouraged or normalized at this level. Also, this doesn’t mean all athletes participate in this culture; it’s just something that feels very normalized and encouraged for women with a larger brand or aspirations of having a larger brand.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

I try to keep my hair as close to my “normal” ponytail as possible. I’ve never subscribed to the “slick back” look. I think it looks great! But I’m sure it would tug on my scalp and be uncomfortable for me. I also think tendrils or small wisps of hair are so cute and so unique that I always hope my haircut allows for this natural look. I will do my makeup, but it’s a natural, glowy look. So tinted moisturizer, a few swipes of waterproof mascara, some blush, clear eyebrow gel, maybe a bronzing contour here or there, and some simple eyeshadow and that’s it! I want to feel like myself out there.

Have you ever felt pressure to present yourself differently as a hockey player?

I played boys hockey growing up until I was 13. I think this limited the ways that I expressed myself, as the majority of the time I was the only girl and wanted to blend in rather than stand out. Once I transitioned to girls’ hockey and especially in college, one of my favorite things has been bonding with my teammates and friends over fashion, hair, makeup, and more. While I am someone who generally wears less makeup when competing, I find more places in my daily life to express myself and try out new beauty or fashion!

Has being an athlete affected your skin? Does the cold weather ever impact how dry your skin is?

I have definitely gone through many phases with my skin, especially as an athlete who wears a helmet. As a teenager, I definitely tried out many products to try and clear my skin or make it “perfect”, which was even more difficult when being an athlete training every day. My skin definitely gets drier due to sweat, and one way that I have learned to combat this is a very gentle cleanser that does not dry out my skin too much. Another thing that definitely gets affected by hockey is my hair. My hair gets very dry due to sweat and having to wash it so much, so trying out different shampoos, conditioners, and hair products has been something that I have done a lot of trial and error with.

What does your skincare routine look like during season? Does it change in the off-season?

Honestly, there are not many differences in season vs. off-season since I am still training a lot in the off-season! For me, simpler is definitely better. I use a lot of Cetaphil products like their gentle cleanser and moisturizers with sunscreen. To keep my skin clear, I use a small amount of Differin gel. One of the products I have been loving this off-season is the Tower 28 SOS Rescue Spray. This is something that I keep in the car and use to cleanse my face after any skate or workout. Lastly, one thing that I do to relax and also help maintain moisture in my skin is a face mask, and I have been loving the Peach and Lily Glass Skin face masks!

Do you find that as you’ve gotten older and played at different levels that the beauty standards for players have evolved?

One thing that I loved in college is that players are able to find their own fashion and style even more. On my college team, we had a large range of outfits, especially for our game day walk-in photos. I loved seeing the expression of different people on the team through beauty and fashion. From looking at PWHL walk-in pictures on social media, it seems to be the same way! Another thing that I love is that my teammates are all so supportive of one another instead of judgmental. For example, there are many times when one of us would wear a clothing item, and the next week multiple other girls had bought it since they thought it was cute! This community and support is something that I have really enjoyed as I have gotten older.

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

I have super thick wavy hair, so one of my essentials is definitely braiding my hair while competing. This is essential so that I don’t get hair in my face while playing! Another way that I like to express myself on the ice is through my earrings. I don’t wear as much makeup because I feel like I am always sweating and touching my face, so adding a fun earring stack is something that makes me feel confident and lets me express myself.

“Unlike most athletes, I didn’t begin playing volleyball until I was 13; meanwhile, most kids start sports as early as 3! I wasn’t in sports camps or things like that growing up; in fact, I was more of an arts kid. I play the violin, acted in plays, and sang in my church choir,” she says. “When the chance to play Junior Varsity came in high school, I took it and haven’t looked back since.”

I had the chance to talk to her about skincare, beauty, and how it all plays a role in her career as a professional athlete. Enjoy!

There can be a lot of pressure for athletes to present themselves in a certain way on and off the court. Have you ever experienced this?

Have I felt pressure? No. Have I recognized an expectation in the sport? Yes. Things have changed so much since I’ve started playing professional volleyball, and I think with the rise of social media and games being broadcast all over the world, there’s an expectation to present ourselves in a certain way. Now I know PLENTY of girlies who do not wear make-up when they play, who put their hair in a ponytail and voila! For myself, however, that’s not my cup of tea. I’ve always loved make-up and watching my mom get ready for church on Sundays. She would wake up early just to make sure she had time to do her full face! There’s also the endorsement and sponsorship aspect that has to be considered. Brands might prefer to work with women who have a lot of social media attention because of their beauty and charisma, so wearing make-up and having our hair done is an added benefit. More than anything, doing my hair and make-up, as well as having my nails done for games, just makes me feel READY. I know that whatever angle the camera captures, I look good, and to be quite frank, this is my job! Who wants to go to work not looking the part, you know? Just to be clear, hair, nails and make-up are looking the part FOR ME. For the girls that choose not to, more power to them!

Has being an athlete affected your skin at all?

YES. A prime example would be my time in Korea in 2019, where I had the worst case of cystic acne all along my t-zone area. I was extremely stressed out from the demands placed on me and had a very difficult time acclimating to the culture. Unfortunately, my skin had to pay the price, and I had to take a medication called Spironolactone to help. A few years later in Greece, the acne returned, and I chose to bite the bullet and begin Accutane to rid me of the acne once and for all! Now my skin is in a much better spot, and I get occasional breakouts around my cycle. Outside of that, games and practices don’t affect my skin all that much. Maybe when we have multiple games in one week that involve travel and game make-up, I’ll notice dullness in my skin. Otherwise, mama don’t play ‘bout her skin care okay!

What does your skincare routine look like during season vs off-season?

I currently am in the process of trying and swapping new products in and out, so I don’t want to mislead the people! But I will say I aim to keep it as simple as possible. The only active ingredients I use constantly are tretinoin every other night at 0.5% and the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum on nights I don’t use tretinoin. Always using an SPF any time I leave the house, of course. Actually, the face wash I’ve been loving and just repurchased my second bottle of is the Anua Heartleaf Pore Deep Cleansing face wash! That gets my face squeaky clean and doesn’t break the bank!

Is there anything you do before competing that makes you feel more confident?

A slick back middle part bun or ponytail haaates to see me coming in game day! For makeup, I keep it light by using concealer instead of foundation and use a lighter hand with application. But I will ALWAYS have blush and a lip on! The only exceptions have been afternoon games against less competitive teams. For me, I know it’ll be a short game, and I don’t feel like doing all that. Otherwise, you will not see me without SOMETHING on my face!
