A few things I’ve been consuming lately…

1. Physical Therapy - for my lower back. I think I finally found someone who is hands on and interested in helping me progress.

2. Queens - I used to be a Sporcle fiend, but don’t have a lot of time lately for quizzes. I love this new LinkedIn game (in addition to the NYT crossword).

3. Carbon - We traveled quite a bit this summer (though I refuse to accept airlines’ requests for ME to “offset” my carbon footprint…)

4. Audio content - Podcasts and audiobooks took up a lot of my ear time, especially on the plane.

5. World Cup - Admittedly this is a little dated, but I consumed a lot of it in July.

6. Family time - I got extended family time in Copenhagen for my brother’s wedding. And then, upon return, we had to double down on the family time since we had left two of our kids back in the states!

Things I’m looking forward to Creating

1. My tenure packet - I’ve been working on this passively over the summer, but it’s due on September 30!

2. Abs - See “PT” above — my deep core needs to be stronger…c-sections will do that!

3. LEGO - upon coming home from Copenhagen, my kids are back into Lego. I know Denmark is the home of Lego, but my middle son didn’t even go…anyway. DQ (4) loves following the instructions and KQ (6) is more freeform lately, so there’s a balance…

4. Text threads for my fall shows - hit me up if you’re watching the Traitors or Survivor! What else do I need to tune into?

5. Oktoberfest 2026 - My husband and I are running our church’s annual auction again, Oktoberfest theme. It’s a bit of work, but having done it last year, we are just reusing the playbook and not overthinking things.

6. Boards - We won four “Board dinners” at a church auction last year (see above) and it’s our new favorite way to consume food! It’s also great exposure to a variety of foods for the kids - everyone is happy. The ones we got from our friend in the auction were BBQ mac n cheese (pictured), poke, and pad thai. And then the kids were inspired to make their own board last week for movie night.

Current Reads (and an update on my vacation books)

Challenger, by Adam Higgenbotham - Recently started (and finished) this book — I could not stop listening to it. It’s about the Challenger disaster, but also tells the story of NASA pretty thoroughly - a lot of earlier decisions led to the disaster, as I learned. It was rather anxiety inducing, in the exact ways you would expect, but riveting.

The Lost City of Z, by David Grann - I like this book, but I also sense that either there won’t be payoff or I won’t feel satisfied by it. If the author doesn’t find Z, why am I reading this? And if they do find the city of Z, will I care? I liked learning about some early South American explorers, but I’m not sure I’ll finish this.

Big Bad Wool, by Leonnie Swann - I couldn’t get into this. If there’s a sequel to the movie though, I’d watch it.

Bear Brawl, by Jon Finkel - This book was a pleasant surprise, but only in the sense that I had no prior expectations. I follow Jon at Books and Biceps, and I like his newsletter but you never know how that will translate to a novel. This delivered! Punchy from page 1, it’s about a man wanting to fight a huge, rogue black bear to exact revenge for…no spoilers! You can immediately see how it might sound a little far fetched…but!! The motivation was convincing, it was well-researched, and it had the perfect pacing to keep me turning the pages. I was even reading this book while my kids were at the trampoline park! Very fun read - comes out November 10th.

Sports…?

Summer, especially August, is a particularly slow sports season. I watched a lot of the World Cup and then kind of tuned out until football season! I just had my Fantasy Football draft, where I got a B. Hoping the Seahawks have another fun year to follow! I am also coaching two soccer teams this fall: Preschool and 1st/2nd grade girls. We had our first practices on Monday and they went well, but with very different energies!

I haven’t been reading a ton either, so not many sports books to share, but more to come this fall! I’ll share one book someone recently sent me: Why is Everyone Cheering? I haven’t read it, but the reviews are positive if you are a reluctant sports fan or know someone who has questions but might be afraid to ask! And of course - Go Seahawks!

I will also be traveling next week — my oldest younger brother becomes the last one in our family to get married next week. He’s an expat (first to France, now Denmark) and is marrying a Danish woman (half American, but has lived most of her life in Denmark), so we are headed to Copenhagen. We are bringing only my oldest daughter, and she feels very special. This is neither a travel blog nor a mom blog, but I figured I’d share a few fun things my daughter got for the trip (no wonder she feels special…!).

Books I’ve packed and downloaded:

• The Last of the Amazons - my friend has been recommending this to me for a while and it’s a bit older, so it was easy to borrow. However, a related book that I’m a little more interested in (and was also able to borrow!) is The Lost City of Z — apparently it is fantastic narrative nonfiction akin to Into Thin Air. David Grann wrote Killers of the Flower Moon, which I haven’t read, and The Wager, which I have and enjoyed.

  

• Big Bad Wool, by Leonie Swann - we watched Sheep Detectives last week and it was a cute, cozy, humorous mystery. This is the sequel to the book the movie is based on.

  

Current Reads (not bringing physical books to Europe)

In the Range of Fire & Ice, by David B. Williams - No, this is not the latest ACOTAR fantasy novel. It’s a fascinating look at how the Cascade mountain range was formed and what makes it so unique. The PNW is truly amazing. Plus, this is my first book as an Early Bird Reviewer for Mountaineers Books - it comes out in September.

Two Types of People, by Pat Sitkins. An interesting concept — the author interviews accomplished people across various fields (e.g., Navy SEALS, NBA, astronaut) and they each share how they “dichotomize” the world. For example, Jason Kuhn, a former Navy SEAL, says people are either mission-first and those who are me-first. Laurenne Ross, Olympic skier, says there are people who connect and people who compare.

The Flight Attendant, by Chris Bohjalian - I wanted more from this book…the ending didn’t have enough for me, sadly. As another easy-read novel, I just started Last One Out, by Jane Harper. Maybe I can finish it before we leave.

Introduction to Marketing Icebreaker

It is August (alas), so this week have have been working on my syllabi and courses for my fall classes. One of them is asynchronous, so I have discussion boards set up to meet everyone virtually so I thought I would briefly re-introduce myself here as well (with what I shared for my students).

What is a quote you love/live by?

Tell us about who you are, where you are taking the course from, your family, work, etc.?

I grew up in Pullman, WA (the home of Washington State University - Go Cougs!) and then played Division I soccer at Gonzaga (Go Zags!). After college, I lived in Madison, WI for 3 years before moving back to Seattle to obtain my PhD from the University of Washington (Go Dawgs!). After graduation, I got a job at Seattle University (Go Redhawks!), completing my tour of the major universities in Washington state. I met my husband in 2015 (married in 2017) and we live south of Seattle near Maple Valley with our three children.

I love marketing because the students are always so excited to learn, and what we learn is almost always directly applicable to any job we have. There is also a cultural shift in that we feel like we even have to always be marketing ourselves (e.g., on social media).

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of obtaining my PhD, fulfilling a lifelong goal. I am eternally grateful for the life it allows me to live (flexibility in taking care of my children, allowing me to be generous with my time and money).

What is a brand you are weirdly loyal to?

In this stage of life, I have to say Costco. I have always liked them, but I became even more loyal after listening to the episode of Acquired that explained more about their business model, values, and origin. Highly recommend taking a listen.

In closing, my thoughts go out to the city and residents of Spokane this week. Not only is it 1.5 hours from where I grew up, but I lived there for five years while I went to Gonzaga so it feels personal. I can’t imagine anything more devastating than losing one’s home (aside from loss of life). It’s a strong community, but this will take a while to recover from.

The highlight this week has been my daughter’s climbing camp. Not only is she loving it, but I get to take her to the climbing gym and it might be my favorite place in Seattle. I get a day pass for $25, and I get to workout in their extremely nice gym, which is well-stocked with both traditional and unique equipment. Then I go work on my tenure packet for a while before bouldering a little (anyone want to come belay me?), and then finish with a sauna and a shower. I couldn’t ask for a better week. The irony is not lost on me that I grew up watching my dad work on his marketing research and learning to rock climb with him…and now I’m taking my daughter to climb while working on my marketing research…true full circle!

Which also is a completely natural segue to say that the Handbook of Social Psychology and Consumer Behavior that I wrote and edited with my dad last year is finally published! What kind of bookstagrammer / substacker would I be if I didn’t share a picture of a book I wrote?! The pictures on the cover were also fun to choose and personal to us and our family (top left is my cat, top right is the Matterhorn from a hike my dad and I were on in Switzerland in 2018 ish). This is probably not most of my audience’s casual book of choice, but if you work for any institution or library that might want to carry it, I’d be grateful if you shared the link with them!

Current Read (and recent disappointment)

I have had The Murder of Roger Akroyd, by Agatha Christie, on my list to read for a while. Last week it became available to me on the library and I was looking forward to listening to the audiobook. Coincidentally, that day (the DAY I got it) I was scrolling Reddit and happened upon a subreddit discussing books and the twist was SPOILED. The DAY I got the book I randomly stumbled upon the twist of this iconic book. Gah. I’ll spare you the twist, obviously, but so disappointed lol.

I’m still reading Wild, by Cheryl Strayed, and The Flight Attendant is my thriller summer read. It’s decent - if you’ve seen the Netflix show, should I watch it?

Literature Article

My dad sent our family an article this week about the decline of reading. The author went so far as to say we are postliterate…it seemed logical, but sad to read nonetheless.

As I’m as you’re reading this I’m on my way to Wisconsin for a family reunion on my husband’s side, so the fun keeps going…! The forecast has been switching between 80+ and sunny and midwest thunderstorms the entire week…so I am going to pack for everything! I’m just hoping everyone sleeps well and we are still watching the USMNT in the World Cup.

In my last newsletter a couple weeks ago, I talked about my favorite World Cup experience in 2014 where I never missed a game because I had essentially quit my job. Well, it turns out if you work in academia and the World Cup is during the summer on American hours you can also watch every game! I’ve missed only a couple, and I have been thoroughly entertained by both the matches and the global joy around the event. I also am enjoying the larger field of 48 teams - almost every match has been competitive or had something riding on it.

In between everything, I am putting together my tenure packet, going to PT for my lower back, mowing the lawn, welcoming a new au pair into our house, and doing laundry. I also signed up for a 5k in October with a friend that I have absolutely no “goal time” for or anything…the very next day, said friend invited me to run 400s with her at the track. I spent the night before researching “how not to pull a hamstring” and “what’s the likelihood this tears my achilles” lol! Happy to say it went well and at least as of two hours post workout, I feel great.

Halftime Reviews

Everything You Want is on the Other Side of Hard, by Ken Rideout - Do I think the title is a bit of a mouthful? Yes. Is it an enjoyable memoir? Also yes. I am grateful to not know the trauma and addiction that Ken Rideout shares in this book, but it’s also motivating and entertaining to listen to his ultrarunning stories, endeavors, and achievements. I doubt I’ll ever be a marathoner (truly never had a desire)…but I did just sign up for my first 5k race in October. And I haven’t run more than a couple miles since halfway through my first pregnancy (in 2019)…wish me luck! [eBook]

Iceland Annie, by Annie Thorisdottir - This book is nothing special, but it is a fun, easy to read memoir about a bad ass CrossFit athlete. Again, makes you wanna work your butt off (though I haven’t signed up for CrossFit yet). [Audio]

Wild, by Cheryl Strayed - An oldie but a goodie. I grabbed this book at a used bookstore a few months ago and couldn’t remember if I had read it or just culturally absorbed it. I started it last week on vacation and quickly realized I definitely had not read it. I love hiking memoirs, and Cheryl’s writing is great, so I am excited to continue reading it - I hope to follow it up with the movie later this summer! [physical]

The World Cup Is Here!

I don’t follow a specific soccer team throughout the year, but I love events, and there’s truly no bigger event than the World Cup. I played soccer my whole life - it was my first love. I vividly remember watching the famous 1999 Women’s World Cup final, USA vs. China. Kristine Lilly’s goal-saving header, Michelle Akers’ incredible perseverance, Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Brianna Scurry’s save, Brandi Chastain, black sports bra, the rest is history. I do prefer the women’s World Cup, but my favorite World Cup viewing experience has to be 2014.

Flash back 12 years. I am living and working in Madison, Wisconsin, but I have been accepted to grad school back in Seattle. Working at my first job, I thought “the more notice I give them, the better.” So in January, I tell my boss I’m leaving…in August. In hindsight, I’m shocked they didn’t let me go, but they did stop giving me new projects and responsibilities and I just coasted for 8 months. Lucky for me, the 2014 World Cup happened to run during that span. It was in Brazil, which meant the game times were smack dab throughout the day, with one prime time game after work. From June 12 - July 13, I didn’t miss a single game!

All that to say…USA! USA! USA! Enjoy the World Cup, everyone. Below are some books to fill the down time.

I won’t bore you with the rest, but if you are hanging on by a thread, I am there with you! I am also aware that we are very blessed that these items are all neutral to positive — even the laundry is a chore I enjoy.

Additionally, we could have used last weekend to get ahead, but we opted instead to rent a house in a nearby town with 6 families (22 kids amongst us). It was not relaxing, per se, but not as stressful as it sounds. The kids all got along, I got a mountain bike ride in (probably the hardest ride I’ve ever done), we played a lot of Code Names, and we ultimately slept pretty well!

Current Reads

I just finished, The Proving Ground, which is about a 1998 sailing disaster. There is a race in Australia each year called the Hobart, and one hour after the race started that year, there was a cyclone warning that almost all sailors ignored. Of the 115 boats that started the race, only 43 finished and six people died. Good narrative nonfiction - jury is out on how it will affect my psyche this weekend when my husband goes deep sea fishing for the first time…

2026 Recent and Upcoming Releases

I have a “storefront” on Bookshop.org where I curate lists about sports books ( organized by sport, topic, release date, etc.). I hadn’t updated it in a while, so I spent a little time looking for 2026 recent releases and seeing what was coming this summer. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of soccer and World Cup books to keep you busy. Alan Shipnuck’s book on Rory McIlroy is out, as is something that seems right up my alley, Heaven Delayed, about an outdoorsman’s close encounters with death.

I’m particularly interested in two May releases:

• Big Fan: Two Friends, 82,490 Miles, and the Wild, Wonderful Sports We Love, by Michael Schur and Joe Posnanski

Have a great weekend!

Mother’s Day last weekend was nice. I snuck out while everyone was still sleeping and played my first round of golf for the year. My husband asked if I wanted him to find a friend and set up a tee time and I said no thanks — I just wanted a morning alone. I was happy with how I played and I wasn’t paired with anyone. In fact, I didn’t see a single person until I wrapped up hole 9! And I made it home just in time to watch the breakfast chaos unfold. I hope you felt loved or made someone feel loved as well!

Work is in full swing in the middle of the quarter. I graded a ton of midterm exams this week (though it is nicer to be on this side of the tests!) and then received a peer evaluation of my teaching on Thursday. It’s required for my upcoming tenure packet, and added a bit of pressure to my Intro to Marketing class (I think it went well though!). I am also the faculty advisor to the my University’s AMA (American Marketing Association) chapter so I drove up on Monday night for an event. But! I moved class to Zoom and shared asynchronous material on Tuesday so I could attend a Mother’s Day tea at my son’s preschool. I love the flexibility of being a professor to be able to attend things like this.

Speaking of my son, he is four and all he wants to do is help around the house (see above, “My mom likes me to help her with everything”). Given that I am always looking for another DIY/home improvement project (much to my husband’s chagrin), it seems DQ and I will make a great pair. This week’s project, painting the downstairs bathroom!

Sports Happenings

If this were a “sports blog” it would be 9 miles long…the PGA Championship is this weekend, the NHL and PWHL finals are here, the Major Volleyball League crowned a winner, the Mariner’s seem unlikely to repeat last year’s run, The NBA playoffs, Lebron is retiring (maybe)…and I’m sure I’m missing things!

All that to say, I can’t recap everything, but I try to share what really piques my interest now and then. The Women’s College World Series is one of my favorite events of the year, and it kicks off today as well! The UW Huskies play tonight, but I am just a fan of watching great female athletes crush the ball and cheer each other on. It is just so fun to watch their enthusiasm and athleticism.

We ordered new patio furniture two weeks ago and we love it. The space itself needs a little more work, such as a rug and some plants, but the bones are there. We debated this decision for a while (passively for years, in fact), and you never really know if you made the “right” call. But, Costco delivered, set it up, and we’ve already had one warm night reading by the new fire table! I look forward to many more this summer.

Speaking of Costco, we also bought a new mattress from them last week. Our previous mattress wasn’t that old, but it was on the softer side. After having a great night’s sleep at an Airbnb last month, I immediately researched what model it was (an old model of a Sealy from Costco) and bought it as well. It’s been two weeks and such a life changer. I wake up in the morning feeling so much less sore than before — I’m very glad we didn’t wait on that purchase.

I wrote a book!

Kind of. This deserves more elaboration in a future issue, but I co-edited a handbook (with my dad!) on social psychology and consumer behavior that comes out in June. It’s more of an academic book, so I won’t have a big publishing push, but I’ll talk a little more about the process in a future issue. We were excited to see the cover and see it live for pre-order this week though!

Current Sports Read - Addicted to Danger, by Jim Wickwire

Addicted to Danger has been an enjoyable but rather slow read - not bad, but hard to explain. This book talks about death more than most in both expected and unexpected ways. Not only did he witness numerous climbing deaths firsthand, but there is a whole chapter dedicated to his law partner’s family being brutally murdered. That caught me off guard…

Speaking of climbing…

I finally watched Girl Climber and really enjoyed it. I started it with my daughter, but hadn’t vetted it and there was a scene early on where they were talking about an eating disorder so I finished it on my own. That part was very minor and does not take away from the whole movie, but didn’t want to have that conversation with my 6-year old, so we switched to Great British Bake Off Junior. I love watching climbers persevere on routes for years and finally see the payoff. Various scenes led me down entertaining rabbit holes as well, which is fun accompaniment to a documentary.

Also, it’s Everest-climbing season! There are ~400 Everest permits granted this year. If you want to follow along, Alan Arnette has been blogging about it for years. I find him to be both neutral and comprehensive, sharing about all known/legal teams and expeditions as well as discussing the current ethical debates.

I popped down to Oregon last week for a one-day conference at Oregon State University. My sister lives close, to Corvallis, so I visited her on the way and took my middle son down for a day of cousin time. I heard an adage a while ago, “If you have three kids, two is one, and one is none.” That is, if you have three kids, when you are only watching two of them, it feels like you are watching one kid, and if you are with one, you are basically child free. I could not agree more. For this trip with one kid, I threw some clothes in a bag, grabbed a handful of snacks and hit the road.

The one thing I had underestimated, however, was how quickly he would go through the handful of books we had. He was done with my stack before we were on the highway! Luckily, I knew there was another library branch about 20 minutes away right off our path. With one kid and no time schedule to keep, I called an audible and we loooooaded up on books for the rest of the three hour drive. I do believe my son found every single truck and construction book they had. After reading every book (about an hour and fifteen minutes), he fell asleep for the next 90 minutes until we parked at our location. Like I said, a child-free trip.

The library receipt said I saved $585 using the library. We all know the numerous benefits of libraries, but it was fun to see the monetary, quantitative value of a single library visit.

My best friend from Kindergarten texted me on Wednesday morning and said “I had a dream you were so overwhelmed with life, so just wanted to see if you were okay!” While I am not exactly overwhelmed, her text was oddly prescient… Last week two cars were in the shop, on Monday we had a cat dentist appointment (which is an expensive, all-day affair), papa (my dad) came in to town to “sub” while our nanny was gone, we bought a new mattress and new patio furniture (which involved power washing the patio before delivery), and professional carpet cleaning (which involved getting everything upstairs off the ground as much as possible). I do love a good spring clean, though!

Current Read

I have not had a ton of time for reading, but I’m technically on the hook for next month’s book club choice! I went with “A Marriage at Sea,” which seems like a good mix of nonfiction and book club fodder. Plus, it’s short! I started it on the way home from work yesterday and am enjoying it so far — though I think being stranded at sea is one of my worst nightmares.

Sports and Literature

The Charles Tyrwhitt Sports Book Awards, now in its 23rd year, shortlists were just announced here. To be eligible for these awards, the book does have to be published in the UK in the first year, so the lists skew European and British, though that itself is not a requirement. I am not familiar with too many this year honestly, but I did just receive a copy of Driven, which made three shortlists!

On Monday, I took my daughter to a one-day climbing camp where I attempted to work on the side. Our two-day family trip on Thursday was to the Olympic Peninsula, where we did a couple of family hikes, ate fish and chips, and stayed in some fun Airbnbs (one had chickens and one was a caboose!). Our first hike was at Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, and then we visited Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. We always like to drive through the Olympic Game Farm - you get to feed llamas, yak, elk, deer, bison, etc. It’s not for everyone!

In other sports news, we pondered buying LA28 Olympics tickets this week but ultimately bailed. My mom lives in Orange County and got selected in the “resident draw.” However, as she was shopping around for tickets our family might be interested in, the cheapest prelim beach volleyball tickets were $582. Um…what?? My sister and I considered how many things we could each do with $582 (+flights and lodging and parking and fighting traffic…) and decided against it. I told my mom she should still buy tickets to something, even a relatively off-the-wall sport - it’s not too often the Olympics come to YOUR town. Though the World Cup is coming to Seattle in June and I don’t have tickets…

Sports Literature Haul

While on our Olympic Peninsula trip, we stopped to get coffee on Saturday morning. As we were leaving the drive-through, I saw a sign that said “BOOK SALE TODAY.” I asked my husband if we should go and he said, “I think you have to…” I turned the corner and people were lined up with tote bags outside the shop. It was 8:58 and it started at 9:00 - I was anticipating a great sale! It was a book sale for the Friends of Sequim Library, and everything was ONE dollar (except new hardback non-fiction). My kids got a few books, two puzzles, and I am very happy with my haul!

The two that I am most excited about are No Shortcuts to the Top by Ed Viestur. This book got me through my PhD program and reinvigorated my interest in climbing and hiking. Jim Whittaker died at age 97 last week. Jim was the first American to summit Mt. Everest and was the first full-time employee of REI. I also feel a bit of kinship in that he was a Seattle University alum! You can read more in his book, A Life on the Edge. With how accomplished he was, I am surprised this was his only book.

Other spring break activities included lots of parks, class prep, a trip to the library, a lost tooth (for a 6-year-old who called me out as the tooth fairy, no less), some yard work, a trip to the Nike Company store, more basketball, and dinner with friends. Overall, the last two weeks have been rather low key, especially since we had bounced around going to Las Vegas…but it’s not bad to take a breather sometimes.

One last complete tangent…I could not care less about astrology, but I recently heard a podcast talking about “something retrograde, something rising” and wanted to Google what my sign was. After ten minutes, I still am not sure (Libra with a Virgo moon…maybe??). Anyway. I did peruse the description for a few minutes and noticed something of interest:

“Regarding studying or learning, you are better off reading the material than listening to the teacher. These traits come from a strong need to actively participate in communications. It is tough for you to listen passively and absorb information.”

Whether it’s “true” or not (remember, astrology…), this jumped out to me for two reasons. First, Tuesday was the first day of my spring quarter so I was primed to be thinking about how students learn differently. And second, my current life stage and lifestyle allow me to “read” a lot more if I consume audiobooks. I enjoy listening to audio books (and definitely count them as reading), but I almost certainly remember less than if I were to read a physical book (or even an ebook). As a student, I always went to class, but I definitely feel like I learned the material on my own later through the textbook and rereading my notes as opposed to from the professor.

Sports and Literature

For tennis fans…The New York Review of Books just published a piece called “The Tennissance.” The essay argues that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have revived tennis by essentially recreating the athletic-aesthetic duality that Federer and Nadal once did. The author compares Alcaraz to a Roald Dahl character and also reviews a new Nadal biography.

If you’re looking for a book on the same topic, check out Giri Nathan’s Changeover: A Young Rivalry and a New Era of Men’s Tennis (one of the best sports books of 2025). It’s interesting to start writing a book about a rivalry in an anticipatory fashion rather than retrospectively. It’ll be something to watch for years, that’s for sure.

Halftime Review

I am extremely invested in The Pitt right now. It is SO good, and also emotionally taxing. I have been happy with Season 2 - it’s lighter (for me) than Season 1 was, so I breathe easier afterwards. However, I still have to follow it with a Schitt’s Creek palette cleanser. Survivor Season 50 is also in full swing. All this to say that I watched more TV in March than I have in years! I normally read a lot during spring break as well, so it was an anomaly all around. Here is my current reading lineup:

Otherwise, it was finals week here, so I gave my last final and am grading. Some other quick highlights:

• The timing of the quarter end lining up with March Madness is unbeatable! I have my two TVs set up and have made myself largely unavailable.

• We had a huge dumping of (very wet) snow. It’s quite the rarity, and we had a blast

• KQ started soccer again

• My husband and daughter are off to Iowa for a few days

• I started rewatching Schitt’s Creek

• Aside from the one day of snow, it’s been raining for weeks here, and I’m ready for spring.

Halftime Review

Luckily, before heading to the ER last week, we had mostly stopped the bleeding at home. That gave me time to change my clothes, grab my iPad (for Paw Patrol), my Kindle, and my phone charger. I was texting updates and certainly wasted time on Instagram, but I also spent a lot of time reading an upcoming release, For the Love of the Grind. Sara has a unique life, from being an elite runner, to marrying an elite runner, to adopting four kids from Africa! One small anecdote I liked in the book was her reticence to run in Nikes, even when their newest shoe at the time was creating noticeably quicker times, both for her competitors and when she tried them out in private.

Book-finding Tool

This book finder from NPR, Books We Love, is a fun tool for looking up some bestsellers/faves from recent years. There aren’t too many “nonfiction sports books” on their list (literally, three from 2025), but it’s worth playing around with if you’re a reader! Personally, I really want to read American Kings, but I heard Changeover is good as well.

Whether you’re familiar with the name Kathrine Switzer or not, you certainly know her legacy: a coed Boston Marathon. Signing up as the ambiguous K.V. Switzer, Kathrine donned Bib 261 in the 1967 Boston Marathon. She was accosted by race directors at mile four trying to rip her bib off — there were no women allowed in the Boston Marathon at this time. Her boyfriend fended them off, and K.V. Switzer finished the marathon in 4 hours and 20 minutes. Females were officially allowed to enter the esteemed race five years later and the rest is hisher-story.

This story, and hundreds more, exist in an important and growing genre of literature: female athletes. What better time to crack one open than Women’s History Month — which one are you going to read first?

2026 Goals Update

Almost two months in, let’s see what has stuck! As a reminder, my word of the year is “Outside.” It’s still a little early to get working in yard, but my husband and I have been talking about what we need to do for our yard this spring. I also want to finish hanging our outside lights, but I need a dry weekend (and to find the screws I misplaced…). I’m still very happy with this idea, as I can tailor them to moods and holidays (or to celebrate Super Bowl victories…!). I’ve stopped for a couple side hikes when possible, and this week I bought a plant for my bathroom (i.e., bring the outside in). A related goal I had to abandon was to cross country ski three times…contrary to most of the country, Seattle has received “no measurable snowfall” with “warmer than average temperatures,” and there’s only about 40% of the usual snow in the mountains. A bummer in many ways.

I stated a few weeks ago that I wanted to try and grow my Instagram account a little more, as my 5-year Instagram anniversary was earlier this month. The funny thing about goals, however, is that you sometimes immediately know if it’s right or wrong. After about five days posting more than normal, I remembered that this is most definitely a hobby! I would have to put in WAY too much time to actually grow significantly, and I am quite happy with my ROI and the connections I’ve made with people who share my interests. Thanks for being here!

Halftime Reviews

I climbed a lot with my dad when I was younger, and I still love climbing, though I rarely go anymore. I’ve recently exposed my daughter to it and it’s fun to see her love it as well - we go when we can, but the closest gym is 40 minutes away! It’s fun to see her learn the lingo and etiquette, trust the rope and belayer (me), and ultimately get a good workout! In another life I would be a dirtbag rock climber in Yosemite…which means I absolutely love memoirs like Turn to Stone, by Emily Meg Weinstein.

Black History Month - Hiking Edition

There are so many good books about black athletes, it’s too many to highlight in one issue! Have a good weekend!

On Monday evening I was part of a panel at my university where we discussed and critiqued the Super Bowl ads. I was the faculty panelist, but I learned a lot from the creative strategists and copy writers that were there from AAF Seattle. My favorite commercial was probably the Levi’s ad or the Jurassic Park Xfinity ad. What were yours?

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one week, I flew to Vegas on Wednesday morning for 24 hours to see the Backstreet Boys in concert. Yes, I did see them back in July. These were different seats, so I pitched it as “Sphere research” — seat comparison! (not really lol). The concert was, again, fantastic. In the spirit of sharing my research, if you find yourself looking for a Sphere concert, the higher seats are better and worth the additional cost. We were under an overhang this time, and the concert was great, but the visuals are so impressive, it’s nice to experience the whole production.

We also gambled a bit, went to the Vanderpump Cocktail Garden (the goat cheese balls were delicious), and celebrated one of my friend’s 40th birthdays. All in all, short but worth it. 10/10 recommend blitzing to Vegas mid-week.

Current Sports Reads

I started listening to Where Men Win Glory, by Jon Krakauer. This book has been on my TBR for probably a decade and I just saw it on “Available Now” audiobooks. I’m about a quarter of the way through and to be honest, it’s largely about the state of Iraq in the 90s. I love Krakauer’s writing, and it’s certainly informative, but it’s less about Tillman than I thought.

I paused reading ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies) near the end of 2025, but I have recently downloaded some upcoming sports releases that look good. Below are the three on my Net Galley shelf: For the Love of the Grind, Why Fly, and Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard.

If you aren’t familiar with Net Galley, it’s a site where publishers post upcoming books and you can sign up for an account to read early releases. The goal is to generate buzz, reviews, and get people talking about the book before it launches! I think you need to have some sort of social media to have a little credibility, but I don’t even have 2,000 followers and they let me in, so it’s not much — it might be worth a try if you like reading and want to see the early releases.

I had a few more things to share, but they are not time sensitive, and my abbreviated work week left me a few things I need to get done before the weekend, so I’ll see you next Friday!

The winter Olympics start tonight and it’s Super Bowl weekend (Go Seahawks!). We are hosting people for the big game this weekend - last year I watched the game alone with my 2-month old, so this atmosphere will be quite different.

I actually just took a quiz last night about my charisms, wherein I was finding out how I best serve others (i.e., a spiritual gift). By far, I scored the highest in Hospitality, followed by Giving. So I guess it makes sense I am having people over and making jalapeno poppers (Craftsmanship??).

Anyway! I was recently reading The Sirens’ Call, and one line has stuck with me for the past few weeks “To be a parent is to have one’s attention always divided.” Isn’t that the truth? Reading this book came right in the midst of my almost 4-year-old being obsessively clingy. However,I also know I won’t be the object of his attention forever, and I’ll soon wish he would think about me more! It was a good way to keep things in perspective.

Speaking of divided attention, though. On Thursday, I sent my daughter to school wearing clothing for Seahawks Spirit day, which I found out later was scheduled for Friday; later that morning, I sent my son to school and forgot that it was pajama day at pre-school! Alas.

Finally, I am going to Vegas again on Wednesday to see Backstreet Boys (yes, again!). It’s a long story about why…but short version is that I was still riding the high from the last concert in July when my neighbor ended up with extra tickets so I immediately bought them, and now here we are! I am going with a friend whose 40th birthday is Wednesday too, so I’m busy making a quiz about 1986 and trying to figure out how to make it special! Let me know if you have any recs for a whirlwind Vegas trip.

Current Sports Read

Uncommon Favor, by Dawn Staley. I was browsing available audiobooks this week and hadn’t realized that Dawn Staley wrote a memoir last year. I think it’s great to read about successful women in women’s sports, and I especially like reading coaches perspectives. As far as memoirs go, there hasn’t been anything groundbreaking or extremely surprising, but it is organized around life lessons she wants to share, and it’s enjoyable.

I also started The Briar Club, by Kate Quinn (great name, right?!) and I have Where Men Win Glory also queued up. I checked out the wrong Jon Krakauer book last November, but I’ve long wanted to read about Pat Tillman.

This is a perfect time to share some books about current and former Winter Olympians. In addition to the usual motivation and dedication themes that athlete memoirs have, I noticed that many of these books have stories about injuries and rehabilitation. Maybe this shouldn’t be surprising, as throwing yourself down a slalom course at 60 MPH is inherently more dangerous than, say, shooting a basketball! But I thought it was noteworthy nonetheless. Sports Books That Were Hot in 2016

I think it’s safe to say that shoe dog won the year. And I have seen run fast, eat slow as a still popular cookbook, but I didn’t find too many that people are still talking about today. The backlist is always fun to revisit, though, and many of these books are very easy to get at your library, no holds. I recommend Denali‘s Howell, which actually came out at the very end of 2015, and I think I’m going to pick up Arthur next.

A recap of the year in sports wouldn’t be complete without a look at what stories were translated to the big screen in 2016. My personal favorite from that year is Greater, which I actually just recently watched. It’s a true story, inspiring, and emotional — as good sports movie are.

• Adidas vs. Puma. The Dassler Brothers’ feud led to the creation of the two independent sneaker brands. I wonder when we’ll get Shoe Dog, the movie?

• Bleed for This. Boxing movie about the life of Vinny Pazienza.

• Two great movies about black, Olympian racers. I Am Bolt is a documentary about Usain Bolt, and Race is a biopic sports drama about Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics.

• The Phenom - A sports drama (fiction) loosely based on the life and struggles of Rick Ankiel.

• Finally, a documentary I really want to see, The Founders, is about 13 women who founded the LPGA.

P.S. Here’s me in 2016 in front of my high school soccer field.

I’ll end my goal talk by sharing that I want the word “Outside,” to guide my year. I want to go on five hikes with my family, and I want to use my new cross country skis at least three times (I did both last weekend!). But it doesn’t have to just be me literally getting outside. For example, I want to get a climbing plant to go above the cabinets in my kitchen (bring the outside in), and I need to finish putting up the permanent outdoor lights that I started before Christmas (outdoor projects). What other ways can I interpret “outside?”

Current Reads

I just finished my first book of 2026, which was Grit, by Angela Duckworth. It’s not a new release, but it was the perfect audiobook to start the year off. I especially liked the chapter geared towards parents, which included phrases to help build kids’ grit (e.g., I’m proud of your effort…you can’t do that yet…let’s break this big problem into smaller steps…).

After Grit, I just started two new books - one nonfiction and one for book club. The Sirens’ Call is about how attention is our most important resource. I just started it, but I’m hoping there are practical takeaways for how to protect and reclaim it as well!

Watch More TV?

Unsurprisingly, watching TV and movies is one of the main things that has taken a hit since having kids. I’m okay with this, but I have always loved going to the movie theater (my first real job was working at our local cinema) and there are some undeniably good shows out there. People have laughed when I said one 2026 goal was to “watch more TV,” as it’s usually the opposite! But since my free time is still limited, I want to be intentional with what I watch, which usually involves thinking ahead. In the same vein of planning out my TBR, here are four movies I want to watch in 2026.

Girl Climber (Rent on Prime): Silly name, looks sweet. Follow elite rock climber, Emily Harrington as she attempts a 24-hour ascent of Yosemite's El Capitan. This is the same wall that Alex Honnold free soloed, but reviews say it’s great and doesn’t rely too much on Honnold’s cameos, which is nice. My daughter went rock climbing over break for the first time and loved it - maybe I can get her to watch this with me!

Everest North (Nat Geo, not released yet): This is one I will try to see in theaters when it comes out! Jimmy Chin and his wife, Chai Vasarhelyi, are unparalleled adventure movie producers (see: Free Solo, Meru), and this is their documentary following Jim Morrison, who became the first person to climb and then ski down Mt. Everest in October 2025.

Wake Up Dead Man (Netflix): I’ve been looking forward to the third installment of the “Knives Out” universe (not sequels, but same main lead)! I have a date soon with a friend to watch it on a Thursday after the kids get to bed — like I said, gotta be intentional!

Finally, one movie/event that I honestly can’t decide if I want to watch live. Alex Honnold will be free soloing the Taipei 101 tower live on Netflix on January 23rd. That means he will be climbing without a rope or protection. Fall = death. Now, he did this in Free Solo, which is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. But when watching that, I at least knew he was successful. I’m not sure my heart can handle this stress live, and I don’t even know the guy! In 2018, I started doing “18 for 2018” and then 19, 20, etc. But I’m feeling that twenty-six goals is too many for one year. Sometimes I do the Oola practice of making seven goals in each of the big F categories: Faith, Friends, Family, Field, Finance, Fitness, and Fun. I’ve also done “One phrase” to define the year. Past years have been “Practice Maximum Enthusiasm” or “Tom Cruise” (the year I watched all of his movies).

This year, I impulsively joined the Proper Mountain Woman club without doing ANY research on it. Turns out it’s a quarterly list of goals you can choose to accomplish… though there are hundreds and they seem rather random (Make a hat? Wear a brooch every Thursday for three months? Walk backwards for three minutes a day for a fortnight?) It also appears to be for women in England (Go for a walk around Hyde Park. Eat at an English pub. Play darts with your chums.) So I think that was a waste of money, classic. However, one goal in the packet was “Look up Misogi and come up with yours.” I didn’t know what Misogi was, but as is usually the case, I then started seeing it everywhere. Ryan Holiday talks about it on his blog here - basically it’s the Japanese concept of doing one big, hard, year-long challenge. As in, when you look back on 2026, that will be the year I did ______. This feels akin to having a guiding word, only it’s more of a guiding activity.

I am going to give this some thought and will report back. The easy (and probably necessary) answer is that this will be the year I went up for tenure at my university. My packet is due in September, so this will be a big task with a 2026 deadline. However monumental that is for my career, it doesn’t feel “hard enough.” At the end of the day, I’m just putting together some documents about my work accomplishments. So I want something bigger…like trying out for women’s USA handball team to make the 2028 Olympics!

ANYWAY. Life goes on whether we have goals or not, and I have to get back to teaching soon. I’ll end this issue by sharing five books I want to read in 2026.

• Farther, by Heather Anderson (Put date: Mar 1) - I read “Thirst” by the same author last year and enjoyed it, so I’ll pick up her new one.

• Dragons in the Snow, by Edward Power - I don’t know anything except the summary about this one, but I want to read something “wintery.”

• Big Fan: Two Friends, 81,589 Miles, and the Wild, Wonderful Sports We Love, by Michael Schur, Joe Posnanski (pub date: May 19) - This sounds like Misogi at it’s finest!

• For the Love of the Grind, by Sara Hall (pub date: April 21) - Sounds like the exact kind of memoir I love.
