Like the old school capsule wardrobe, an essentials list feels like the ultimate shortcut to a perfectly curated collection: the promise that you’ll always have the right thing for the occasion, choosing an outfit will be effortless, and your closet will finally feel complete.

Unfortunately, that’s just not the case.

That essentials list works for the person who wrote it. Your lifestyle isn’t hers, your personal style isn’t hers, your wardrobe isn’t hers.

So instead of handing you a shopping list, I want to give you the lens I actually use when building creative capsule wardrobes, styling clients, and curating my own closet.

And while we’re using shoes as an example, you can apply this framework to any category: tops, bags, accessories, outerwear, etc.

The Audit

Every piece in your closet can be evaluated at three levels:

1. The Item Level

2. The Outfit Level

3. The Collection Level

Think of it this way: the Item Level asks whether it’s good for you. The Outfit Level asks whether it works with what you actually wear. The Collection Level asks whether it contributes something useful in the context of everything you already own.

You can own a beautiful, comfortable shoe that feels completely like you, but never quite works in your outfits. Or, you can own a shoe that works perfectly with your clothes, only to realize you have four others doing almost exactly the same job. That’s why it’s important to evaluate all three levels.

As we go, I’ll show you some examples from my own shoe collection.

The Item Level

The first step is to evaluate each shoe individually across three dimensions:

1. Physical State: fit, quality, condition

2. Style Alignment: does it even feel like you?

3. Functionality: which Life Mode(s) does it serve?

Yes, these are in order of importance. And yes, style comes before function at the item level.

Not because function doesn’t matter, but because I believe that there is a solution that suits your style while being completely functional.

Prioritizing style over function (especially when evaluating new items) will force you to think more creatively and help you avoid accumulating a load of “good enough,” functional pieces that crowd out your style.

Functionality still matters enormously, it just gets evaluated differently at all three levels.

Now, this framework isn’t meant to be a closet clear-out or a reason to bloat your shopping list with new items.

Once you’ve evaluated each piece, you’ll know what it takes for a shoe to tick all three boxes for you (and how easy it is to accumulate ones that don’t).

But failing one of these checks doesn’t automatically mean the shoe needs to go. This is an audit, not a purge.

The only ones I’d encourage you to get rid of would be the ones that fail check #1: if they don’t physically fit, or the quality or condition are poor, part ways or archive them.

In my own wardrobe, here are a couple of shoes that are failing on Style Alignment for me right now, and why I’m keeping them anyway.

• Birkenstock Boston: objectively not my style, but also EXTREMELY comfortable, so they score high on functionality.

• Red Vans Old Skool: the Vans Old Skool is probably my favorite sneaker of all time, so I’m often tempted to buy it in multiple colors. I love red, so these seemed like a good choice at first. But they often feel just a little too youthful. I think this is mainly due to the combination of casual sneaker + bright, playful color. They’re in good shape, functional, and I have worn them occasionally, so I’ll keep them to fill that “bright sneaker” category whenever I’m craving it (and as a reminder not to purchase anything similar).

I want to reiterate here that this audit doesn’t have to result in a “keep” or “toss” determination (if you can’t already tell, I’m very anti-closet-clear-out). At the end of this exercise, the primary goal is awareness: knowing what you have, what you like, how it works, and what’s missing.

The Outfit Level

Once you know which shoes are holding their own, the next question is whether they work back with what you actually wear.

Here, we aren’t only aiming to have shoes that simply “go with” an outfit. We want shoes that complete the outfit.

That means:

1. Functionality: does the shoe serve the intention of the outfit as a whole?

2. Silhouette + Proportion: does it complement the shapes and lines you want to create (think BIG/SLIM/SKIN)?

3. Conflict + Balance: does the shape, proportion, style, or color of the shoe harmonize with the look, or provide some desired contrast (think The Base+ Framework and Color Story)?

This is admittedly the most complex level of analysis, because it requires integrating all of your lifestyle, style, and physical constraints at once.

We are no longer just looking at the item itself. We are looking at its relationship to your outfits.

There are a few ways to go about this:

• Already attuned to your own outfits, and usually know when something feels “off” and why? Trust it. No formal exercise needed.

• Keep an Outfit Journal and reflect on each outfit individually as you style IRL (if you’ve been following along with the course, you already have a head start on this one).

• If you want to get a full picture and don’t mind some upfront work, build your digital Outfit Bank. This is exactly what I do for every Capsule client of mine, and it’s the key to curating a very small selection of shoes (usually only about 4 pairs) that is also perfectly functional and stylish.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s look at one specific pair of shoes that I struggle with at the Outfit Level: my blue suede Lucchese Edie Boots.

Admittedly, I saw these on a friend (who actually tried them on in-store before buying), I fell in love with them (on her), and then I ordered them online (oops).

At the Item Level, there isn’t much wrong with them. I like the color and quality, they fit, and a cowboy boot isn’t wildly outside my style. But the challenges really start to show up in the outfit styling.

Here’s how I’d assess them:

• In terms of functionality, there aren’t really any outfits I’m dying to wear that must be paired with a cowboy boot. But I do live in South Carolina so it feels somewhat appropriate to have the option in my wardrobe (which is not a very strong argument, to be fair).

• When it comes to silhouette and proportion, these are not extremely versatile for me. I have fairly short, muscular legs, and a wide calf and I’m pretty picky about proportion and shoe choice when showing my legs. These boots are tall, coming all the way up to the knee, so I like them best when paired with a long skirt with a slit. The next-best combinations for me would be a very short skirt or shorts with a tall boot, perhaps a longer short (a difficult proportion for me), or a culotte (I actually wore this combination to a wedding with a “country chic” dress code and I liked it a lot). All in all, not a wardrobe workhorse for me, but not a complete dud either.

• Finally, conflict and balance. I don’t often find myself reaching for these to create contrast or balance in an outfit. I did find them fun to play around with when cowboy boots were trending, but it was really the rest of the look that had to add contrast to the boots to make the full look feel more like me.

If I were being really strict with my wardrobe, these would have to fail at the Outfit Level. But for me, these will remain a Seasonal in my wardrobe (re: The Wardrobe Framework), so I’ll keep them in my archive and rotate them in whenever I’m inspired to wear them again.

Again, this gives me something more useful than a binary keep/toss decision. Now I know exactly why these boots don’t earn regular closet space. And I know that another tall cowboy boot is unlikely to be a worthwhile investment for my wardrobe.

The Collection Level

Now, we look at everything together.

This is where duplicates and gaps become most apparent.

Three checks:

1. Overlap: do multiple shoes do the same job at both the Item Level and the Outfit Level?

2. Functionality: is any individual outfit or an entire Life Mode going unserved?

3. Range: is there enough real variety in color, texture, and shape across everything you own (think The Wardrobe Framework, BIG/SLIM/SKIN, Color Story, and Texture)?

Overlap is not necessarily a problem, especially if you already own and love the pieces involved. However, it may indicate a category that is essentially “complete” within your wardrobe.

I’ve seen a lot of clients who are constantly drawn toward variations on the same shoe. Maybe it’s a slim, black, pointed-toe boot. If that’s your go-to daily shoe silhouette, then it might make sense to own at least two different pairs so that you aren’t wearing them out too quickly (it’s best to give your shoes at least one day’s rest in between wears).

But once you have enough to comfortably rotate them, spending more time, energy, and money accumulating additional versions will not actually improve your style or make your wardrobe feel more complete.

Wait until a pair genuinely needs replacing, then go looking for something new.

What will improve your style is filling actual gaps in your shoe collection. These could be gaps in functionality, range, or any specific gap that may have shown up at the Item Level or Outfit Level.

When you’re deciding whether a new shoe deserves a place in your collection, aim to satisfy more than one gap with the same shoe.

For example, you may have a functional gap for a flat shoe that can be dressed up or down. Let’s say you also have a range gap in texture (you only own flat textures like canvas and matte leather) and color (all of your shoes are either black or brightly colored).

Then, an optimal solution might be a patent ballet flat in a muted color, or a neutral pony hair loafer.

Notice how much more useful this is: you’ve gone from naming a generic category to identifying the specific qualities that would maximize the impact of this new shoe on your wardrobe.

If you still feel drawn to matte black or brights, at least now you are aware of the tendency.

There’s nothing wrong with deciding that you don’t actually want more range in texture or color. But there’s a big difference between intentionally wearing a more limited range and accidentally purchasing too many things that all feel the same.

When assessing overlap and range, I find that the best way to do this is by looking at your shoe collection across multiple categories.

For example, look at all of your flats together, or all of your white shoes together, to more easily identify duplicates and gaps. Different groupings will reveal different insights.

Here are some examples from my wardrobe:

Flats

I feel like I have pretty good range here, and no duplicates.

The silhouettes are all similar (all a variation on a ballet flat), but variations on color, texture, toe shape, and styling details give them genuinely different roles in my wardrobe.

• Color: blue, black, cream, and white (Rings 1, 2, and 4).

• Texture: matte leather, rhinestone mesh, plain mesh.

• Details: straps, ruching, laces, buckles.

• Toe Shapes: square, almond, round.

• Moods: playful, elegant, sporty, unexpected.

So even though “ballet flats” may look like an obvious area of overlap on paper, I don’t consider this category overbuilt. The important question isn’t how many shoes you own in a particular category; it’s whether they actually create different possibilities in your wardrobe.

Black Shoes

Here’s a category where I have some near-duplicates that, to me, are still worth keeping in my wardrobe.

The three variations on the heeled sandal could arguably perform the same job at both the Item Level and the Outfit Level. However, all three have different heel shapes (stiletto, slim block, chunky block), heel heights, and strap thicknesses.

To me, those differences are enough to change the mood, practicality, and proportion in a meaningful way.

If I wanted to be more selective, I would get rid of the Stuart Weitzman heels first. They have the highest heel height, which I realistically only wear for formal events like weddings, and they are stylistically very similar to the Rag & Bone pair which means they aren’t really adding much functionality or range to my collection.

Most importantly, I now know that my collection of black heeled sandals is already pretty saturated. If I’m ever tempted to buy another pair, they will have to clear a very high bar to earn a spot in my collection.

The Audit vs. The “Essentials”

An essentials list tells you what someone else thinks you should own.

The Audit tells you what will actually make your wardrobe more functional, improve your personal style, and expand your styling range.

More importantly, it separates three questions we often collapse into one:

• Does this item work for me?

• Does it improve or expand my outfits?

• Does it add something meaningfully different to my wardrobe?

And the same process works whether you’re auditing shoes, jackets, bags, tops, or an entire wardrobe.

Style systems aren’t the problem. The way we expect to use them is.

It’s trendy right now to hate on style systems like color analysis, body types, and capsule wardrobes. And I get it.

I’m a bit of a rebel. I hate rules, and I hate being told what to do. In fact, I’m so stubborn that when someone tells me to do something, I have a visceral reaction to NOT do it, even if my rational brain knows it’s the better move.

Color analysis can be restrictive, body types can feel objectifying, and most capsule wardrobes out there are boring as heck.

It’s entirely possible (and unfortunately, common) to develop an unproductive or unhealthy relationship with style systems and style “rules.”

But style systems are objectively useful.

Done right, they are the fine arts degree of personal style. Let me explain.

The Fine Art Analogy

A fine arts degree isn’t meant to just churn out clones of the artists who came before. The goal is to equip and encourage students to develop their own unique art style.

But, every great fine arts degree starts with the fundamentals:

• core technical skills — drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking

• form and structure — understanding volume and proportion, breaking complex shapes into simple ones

• light and shadow — how lighting creates shape and atmosphere

• color theory — how hue, saturation, and value influence perception and emotion, and how to create visually appealing color combinations

• visual literacy and art history — the vocabulary and context needed to analyze and construct complex visual stories

The key is that it doesn’t end there. Two key skills crucially round out any fine arts education, and this is where style starts to form:

• critical thinking — the ability to question norms, evaluate artistic intent, and defend creative choices with solid reasoning

• creative endurance — the skill of pushing past creative blocks using structured methods instead of waiting on inspiration

All of this builds toward one thing: making original work.

Foundations come first, then the skills to bend them. Because you must understand a rule before you can break it intentionally.

Personal style works the same way.

Personal Style as Fine Art

If I were to design a fine arts degree in personal style (which, in a way, is what I want my content to be), here’s how the curriculum would stack up.

The Fundamentals

Start with the analytical fundamentals. These are the skills that give you the ability to recognize the difference between objective truth and perception, and the vocabulary to explain what you see.

• color type — color theory, applied to your physical features

• body type — understanding your proportions and physical characteristics, and their interplay with silhouette, fit, texture, etc.

• fit + measurements — understanding how garment sizing and construction impacts fit on the body

• texture — how fabric and finish create mood and dimension

• identity — the set of traits, beliefs, values, and goals that make up who you are and who you’re becoming

Sure, you can be strict about Color Type. You can clear out your closet and give away everything that doesn’t exactly match your palette. That’s one way to use a color analysis, but it isn’t the only way.

The fundamentals don’t tell you what to wear. They give you the information to decide for yourself.

The Stylization

This is where style starts to form. Once you know the fundamentals, you can bend them on purpose. In the same way that a painter might distort a proportion or break a color convention, you can break the rules to create your own desired effect.

Critical thinking and creative endurance still apply here. But let’s make it a bit more specific.

Here are some personal style skills that add critical thinking and creativity to the fundamentals.

• core style — the vocabulary you use to describe how your wardrobe expresses your identity

• color story — how you combine and use color to create a mood, regardless of your preferred color palette

• multidimensional style — the skill to shift your core style expression to suit your needs, desires, and goals in different external contexts, without losing yourself

• conflict + balance — how to use contrast and tension on purpose, to create intentional harmony or disharmony

This is that “conscious distortion of the fundamentals.”

The key is, you can’t intentionally distort a fundamental that you’ve never learned. You might have great instincts and a natural sense of personal style, but you can’t be a rule-breaker if you’ve never really understood the rules.

The Practice

Then, there’s the actual work of building outfits and curating your wardrobe. This is where the technical skills and your creativity come together to execute your personal style in real life.

• full outfits — how to build looks that work for real life and actually feel like you

• wardrobe editing — understanding what earns its place, and cutting what doesn’t

• capsule2 building — the art of curating a collection of pieces that fully expresses your personal style while solving a focused real-life need (a season, your work week, a trip, your everyday wardrobe foundation)

This is also the level most people struggle with, and probably the reason why the fundamentals like Color Type and Body Type are quickly rejected.

It’s not because Color Type or Body Type are inherently useless. It’s because we expect them to give us the execution, the practice, the outfits, the entire dream wardrobe.

The truth is, they don’t. And we never should have expected them to.

Tools, Not Rules

So no, this was never about putting yourself in a box and following the rules forever.

When you understand the fundamentals, every choice becomes deliberate. You wear the “wrong” color because you made an intentional choice. Because you wanted to. And when that annoying coworker makes a comment on your outfit, you don’t care because you know exactly why you chose it.

There’s one more thing a great arts education gives you: room to experiment, permission to make mistakes, and the teachers and colleagues who can help you understand whether an idea is working, and why.

That’s a big part of what I hope to build here in The Style Lab. Not just the fundamentals, but the space to play with them, the permission to break them, and the tools to turn them into real outfits and real wardrobes in real life.

Tools, not rules.

This is the discovery model of identity, but it’s only half of the story.

Our sense of who we are, our self-image, the whole collection of beliefs we hold about ourselves and our environment… we didn’t just stumble upon it.

We are intelligent human beings with agency.

Even if your current self-image was built by accident, it can be rebuilt on purpose.

The Discovery Model

There are things about you that are genuinely pre-existing.

Preferences that have always been true, even when you couldn’t name them. Quirks that always come to the surface when you’re with close family or friends. The core values that have held steady across every life stage you’ve experienced so far.

These things can be discovered, and when they’re represented in your wardrobe, it feels like recognition rather than decision. Oh, right. This is me.

That side of you is real, and it matters. Honor it, but don’t mistake it for the whole story.

The Becoming Self

You don’t only exist in your past. There’s a version of you that lives in your future: the Becoming Self.

The Becoming Self can’t be discovered, because she doesn’t fully exist yet.

This is why “finding your style” feels like a moving target. The target is moving because you’re actively building something new.

And the Becoming Self is, arguably, more important than the version you discover.

The discovered self may be your nature, your foundation, but it’s also your past. The Becoming Self is the one you choose, and she is your future.

You are not a slave to your past, who you’ve always assumed you were, who you think you’re supposed to be, or even what others expect you to become. You get to build who you’re becoming.

Becoming Beliefs

So how do you actually build the Becoming Self? With your beliefs.

The Becoming Self is built out of becoming beliefs: the beliefs you choose to live by because they move you toward who you’re becoming, even before they feel true.

Belief comes first, behavior follows, and reality unfolds from there.

Back in Entry #52, we defined the three kinds of beliefs:

• knowledge beliefs (what you believe exists)

• judgement beliefs (what you believe about what exists)

• self-image beliefs (what you believe about yourself)

And in Entry #53, we explored how to change your limiting beliefs (usually these are the self-image and judgement beliefs that aren’t serving the Becoming Self).

Which raises the obvious question: how do you tell which beliefs to keep and which ones to change? And it’s not just by asking whether they’re true.

The only question that matters is does this belief move me toward the person I’m becoming, or away from her?

A belief that pulls you away from your goals isn’t wrong, it’s misaligned. And a misaligned belief is a candidate for replacement, no matter how familiar it’s become.

A becoming belief is simply the aligned replacement you choose to act from.

Becoming beliefs aren’t lies or falsehoods. They are the beliefs that are best aligned with your future potential.

The Real Goal

The goal was never “the perfect wardrobe.”

It wasn’t even the thing the wardrobe is supposed to get you (the promotion, the relationships, the confidence).

The goal is to be the woman whose beliefs, decisions, and actions actually align with who she’s becoming, on her own terms, and whose wardrobe supports that identity.

So, Discovering or Building?

It’s always both.

Discover the parts of you that are genuinely, permanently yours, and honor them. Then design the rest on purpose.

Here’s why this changes your personal style trajectory.

If the your identity is both discovered and built, then the work of building your wardrobe, your personal style, your image, isn’t necessarily linear.

Instead, your wardrobe becomes part of how your identity is built.

What you wear can impact the path of your life while you’re still on the journey. It can reinforce the version of yourself that you aspire to be. Done well, every outfit is a commitment to who you’re becoming.

Now, this isn’t permission to skip the inner work and shop your way to a “new self” (that’s exactly why reinventing your style never works).

But starting with identity doesn’t mean waiting until you finally, fully know who you are. That day will never come, because knowing requires looking backwards into the past, but we are always speeding into the future.

Striving for identity-style alignment often requires changing the question from “who am I?” to “who am I choosing to become?”

Because how you dress is the bridge between your inner world (who you are, what you want, where you’re going) and the reality we all live in. That makes your wardrobe one of the most direct tools you have for building the woman you’re becoming.

As I’m nearing my 33rd birthday and the end of my second pregnancy, naturally I used this as an excuse to buy myself some things 😇.

So here’s what I bought, what I returned, and why.

What I Kept

Bolo Tie Earrings — I love adding western influences to my wardrobe, especially after meeting my husband who loves cowboy boots and his two Stetson hats (he was born in Texas so we give him a little credit, but he’ll tell you himself that he’s all hat and no cow 😆). I’m also a big fan of edgy silver earring stacks, so this in my second piercing with a hoop in the front and an ear cuff is a combo I’ve really been enjoying lately. I actually went a but nuts with this order, so if you want to browse everything I bought (and kept), you can see it all here.

Cow Print Pony Hair Loafers — Now that I’m writing this, I realize these kind of tie in with the western theme as well (unintentionally). I love these because they add texture AND print in a fairly understated way. The chunky heel and square toe make them feel “weird” enough to work for my style, and they have the perfect balance of feminine and masculine because the footprint feels chunky but they are actually fairly slim in the sense that the sole isn’t too chunky (kind of a good middle ground between flat and chunky) and the vertical profile of the shoe is slim. I also love that they’re a dark chocolate brown rather than black, which adds dimension to many of my looks (I love a black or gray denim).

Blue Flats with Chunky Buckle — The last style debrief also featured a new pair of ballet flats but there was certainly still space for another given that I’m almost 35 weeks pregnant and I’m not about to wear heels any time soon. I was a bit torn between the blue and the vintage brown, but ultimately love the way that the blue ones feel almost a bit more sporty and fresh. If you haven’t noticed, I’m almost exclusively a silver girl, so the big chunky square silver buckle caught my eye. It’s also the perfect way to add masculine contrast to this otherwise quite feminine shoe silhouette.

What I Returned

Backless Striped Shirt — Living in South Carolina, I’m always looking for clothes that work for hot weather while still feeling like “me” (i.e. not too feminine; no Lilly Pulitzer / Charleston summer dresses for me). I love button-up shirts, so this really caught my eye with the fluttery open-back detail and belt with the silver D-ring detail. Honestly, it was hard to do a proper try-on (34-weeks pregnant), but I ended up returning this one. The sculptural panel in the back is attached to the sleeves in a way that creates sort of a bat-wing effect, adding volume to the silhouette around the bust and shoulder area. It just wasn’t the effect I was looking for, and if it’s not a “hell yes” it’s a no for me.

For My Toddler

Personally, I believe any truly good baby/toddler purchase is also a gift for mom. So here are a couple of things that have made our life a little easier lately.

Aesthetic Highchair Mat — I’d been using a cheap highchair mat from Amazon for a while now, but it honestly looked horrible and was impossible to vacuum over. It was time for a change, and I love this one from House of Noa. It looks great, stays flat, it’s easy to vacuum and keep clean. Seems trivial, but little things like this make a big difference.

Piccalio Toddler Tower — If your toddler can stand, get this. I waited so long to add this to our home, and I really wish I had gotten it sooner. My daughter and I had a blast making banana bread the day that it arrived, and now I have another tool in my tool belt when I need to put her down to get something done. Worth it!

How many of us have ever thought things like:

• I can’t wear that.

• Red is a provocative color.

• I won’t be promoted if I dress creatively.

I would argue that none of these are objectively true.

That doesn’t mean you can’t (or even that you shouldn’t) believe them. That’s entirely your prerogative. But it does mean that they might be unnecessarily limiting your personal style.

So, how do you actually change a belief?

The good news: a limiting belief isn’t a fact, it’s a story you’re telling yourself. And stories can be rewritten.

1. What’s the Story?

Identify One Limiting Belief

You can’t kill a limiting belief if you’ve never acknowledged it before.

So start by identifying one style belief that might be holding you back.

Most of the time, these are identity beliefs. They might start with I’m not or I’m too:

• I’m not cool enough to wear edgy clothes.

• I’m too old for mini skirts.

• I’m not a bold color person.

They could also be judgement beliefs: they’ll think or they won’t or that is/isn’t.

• They’ll think I’m weird.

• My boss won’t take me seriously.

• That isn’t appropriate for work.

Common Limiting Beliefs

If you’re not sure what your limiting beliefs are, they tend to appear in a few common categories:

• Age (e.g. too old, too young)

• Personal Traits (e.g. not smart enough, not conventionally attractive, too shy, too quirky, physical insecurities)

• Feelings (e.g. too self-conscious, too embarrassed)

• Other People (e.g. they’ll judge me, they won’t respect me, my family will comment)

• Time/Money/Priorities (e.g. too busy to invest in myself, everyone else comes first)

The Unlearning

Once you’ve caught the belief, the rest is a process psychologists call cognitive restructuring.

You identify the thought, test it against reality, and replace it with something more accurate, more aligned, or more useful to you.

The next 5 steps will take you through that process.

2. Practice Divergent Thinking.

If you’re a fellow engineer or designer, you might be familiar with the concept of divergent thinking.

Put simply, it’s a process for generating LOTS of ideas.

This is the key skill to unlearn your useless style “rules.”

Backing up a bit, there are two approaches to problem solving (and Asta covers this beautifully).

Convergent Thinking

Narrows many options down to one solution.

This is what we do when we actually decide what to wear today. There must be one answer, because we can only wear one outfit at a time.

Divergent Thinking

Turns one prompt or problem into as many possibilities as you can produce.

This is the key to breaking your limiting beliefs. There can be many answers, because we are only truly limited by objective reality.

There are two main rules of divergent thinking:

1. Defer all judgment. Separate generating ideas from evaluating them. No editing while you create.

2. Go for quantity, not quality. Set a timer or a goal (e.g. 100 ideas), and write down everything.

The best problem-solvers actually use both: diverge first (generate lots of options), then converge (narrow to the best one).

If you’ve been following along here, you’ve already done this in your wardrobe. Entry #48 was inherently a divergent thinking exercise aimed at creating a huge number of outfit combinations from your existing wardrobe.

Now, let’s use divergent thinking to dismantle your limiting style belief.

3. Where Did It Come From?

We’re trying to answer one question: is this belief actually mine?

But for a long-ingrained belief, that’s a tough one to answer right off the rip. So, let’s employ some divergent thinking.

Brainstorm every place it could have come from: a parent’s offhand comment, a bad fitting-room experience, a job that rewarded blending in.

Tracing it back to where it started is the first step to taking back ownership over your beliefs.

4. Seek Out Counter-Evidence.

Your brain is a confirmation-bias machine. Once it decides something's true, it’s hard to see things another way.

So, you must intentionally search for the exceptions.

These could be moments in your own past when the belief didn't hold, or examples of women who don’t share the same belief (a friend, a colleague, a creator whose style you admire).

Each one is proof that the "rule" is optional.

If you’re hung up on age, for example, take a look at Grece Ghanem and Marissa Lepps.

If you’re worried about being creative in a professional environment, Nathalie Martin is a great source of inspiration. And I’ll submit myself as counter-evidence here too: I earned three major promotions and became a Systems Engineering manager by age 30 while dressing creatively. Sure, sometimes I’d get comments on my clothing, but I always felt well-respected and so much more comfortable being myself in the office (which probably improved my performance, too).

You’re not trying to prove yourself wrong, per se. You’re just stacking up enough exceptions that the belief breaks down from law to opinion.

5. Rewrite Your Story.

Now rewrite your story from Step 1.

Replace the limiting belief with an empowering alternative that feels plausible.

Your logical mind will reject the rewrite if you aren’t honest with yourself, so don’t just write the opposite of your original belief or fabricate a fantasy.

For example:

• I’m not a color person → I can learn to use color in a way that feels like me.

• I’m too old for mini skirts → I get to decide what feels comfortable for me.

It’s okay if the new belief doesn’t feel true yet.

It just has to be believable enough to start opening your mind.

6. Questioning Yourself + The Socratic Why.

Now that you know what a limiting belief is, and what it looks like for you, you are better equipped to identify them as they come up.

Next time you catch a limiting belief or negative self-talk, ask yourself these questions:

Notice

What story am I telling myself right now? Identify the belief.

Reflect

Do I actually know this, or do I just believe it? Is it objective reality, or subjective reality?

Cross-Examine

Why? Ask yourself why you hold this belief. And then ask “why” again. Keep asking until you can’t dig any deeper. Aim to ask, and answer, at least 5 times (putting divergent thinking to work). This is the Socratic Why: the real crux of any belief is almost never surface-level.

How is this belief serving me? And is it really serving you at all?

Restate

Do I want to keep this belief? Sometimes the answer is yes, and that’s fine. Just don’t let someone else’s conclusions about you dictate your style. If the answer is no, rewrite your belief.

Asking these questions opens up just enough space between you and your beliefs to develop real, thoughtful taste that’s 100% your own.

Every piece you own, every piece you decluttered, every outfit you reach for and every one you’d “never” wear: every decision is downstream of a belief you probably aren’t even aware of.

The core idea is this: Your beliefs don’t only describe your reality. They create it.

You aren’t choosing your wardrobe from all available options. You’re choosing from the options your current belief system allows you to perceive. The rest are invisible to you.

A woman who believes she isn’t “the type” to wear bold color doesn’t decide against it every morning. The belief has already made the decision before she opens her closet. She simply doesn’t see color as an option.

So, how do our beliefs actually create our reality?

The Paradigm Chain

Experiences → Beliefs → Paradigm → Perceived Options → Decisions → Actions → Reality1

• Experiences — What happens to you, and what you witness.

• Beliefs — The conclusions you draw from those experiences.

• Paradigm — All your beliefs working together as a single lens.

• Perceived Options — The choices you can actually see through that lens.

• Decisions — What you pick from the options you can see.

• Actions — What you do, over and over.

• Reality — The results. Your closet. Your outfits. The person you be

  come.

Your experiences influence your beliefs, your beliefs form your paradigm, and your paradigm determines the set of options you perceive in any given situation.

Objective vs. Subjective Reality

Your paradigm is the difference between objective and subjective reality.

Objective reality exists independently of you. It’s everything that’s true and everything that’s possible.

Your subjective reality is your personal reflection of that, filtered through your paradigm.

Everyone’s paradigm is different, which is why people with identical circumstances can live such different lives.

Your wardrobe (and your life) is a reflection of what you believe to be true.

The 3 Layers of Belief

Zoom in on a single experience: exposure to someone else’s style.

In that instant, three beliefs form in sequence, fast enough that you might even experience them as one reaction.

1. Knowledge Belief: what you believe exists.

   That woman is wearing a dress.

2. Judgment Belief: what you believe about what exists.

   That dress is too colorful.

3. Self-Image Belief2: what you believe about yourself.

   I’m not a bold-color person.

That self-image belief then constrains every future shopping decision and style experiment, all traceable to one moment of judgment you probably don’t even remember making.

Most of your current style beliefs probably aren’t conclusions you consciously reached. They’re judgments you’ve made, often in response to experiences that had nothing to do with your actual taste or potential: a comment from a parent, a dress that didn’t fit, a social environment that penalized standing out.

Have you ever considered that you might be letting someone else’s conclusions about you dictate your style?

I saw a comment once that stuck with me:

“The reason I don’t usually wear bright colors is not that I don’t like them. Instead, I worry that I will stand out when I prefer to not draw attention to myself.”

Now, I’m not saying that everyone must love bold colors. Maybe you tried bold color and genuinely didn't like it. Real taste exists, and developing it is the whole point. The difference is where it came from.

A limiting belief subconsciously shrinks your world.

A genuine point of view is developed over time, with an open mind. You choose it, you own it, and you understand why.

Your beliefs determine what you perceive. What you perceive decides what you choose. What you choose, on repeat, becomes your wardrobe (and by extension, how you’re perceived, and the person you become).

Change the belief and everything downstream changes too.

So ask yourself:

Did I actually decide that? Or did a belief decide it for me?

I struggle with my style in summer more than any other season.

I naturally gravitate towards layered looks with minimal pieces and clean silhouettes.

Most of the year, it works.

But in summer? Strip away the layers, and the looks fall flat.

Outfit Math explains why.

This is the idea that completely rewired my brain around summer dressing.

• color type

• body type

• core style

• the wardrobe framework

The Summer Outfit Problem

In the last entry, we talked about Outfit Math and your Magic Range.

As a reminder, every item gets +1 base point automatically, then earns additional points for Interest Elements:

• color energy

• texture

• distinctive shape

• pattern or print

• notable detail

Your Magic Range is the level of visual interest where your outfits tend to feel most intentional and most like you.

But the tricky thing is that your Magic Range may be harder to hit depending on the season.

In cooler months, your base look might naturally include a top, bottom, mid-layer, jacket, and outerwear. Plus, there are more opportunities for accessories (socks, scarves, gloves), you can include a wider range of textures, and even the shoes can become more substantial elements of visual interest (chunky soles, dramatically tall boots). That means a typical fall/winter look is hitting 8+ points without even trying.

In summer, your base look is probably just a top or bottom, or maybe even just a dress.

Fewer pieces means fewer base points.

Fewer layers means fewer opportunities for texture, proportion, and contrast.

This is why summer dressing feels harder than it should. It’s not that summer pieces are less interesting in general. It’s that there are fewer of them, and each one needs to work harder.

The takeaway: to create an interesting summer look, each individual piece needs to carry more visual interest.

Two Summer Styling Approaches

Now, I don’t want to overcomplicate summer dressing. I believe style should enhance my life experience, not burden it. And ease is extremely important to me.

If anything, I’ve found that Outfit Math has simply helped me refocus my summer style, make strategic purchases, and feel more at ease in my summer style overall.

This means recalibrating my summer styling to include:

• more interesting clothing pieces, or

• more deliberate accessories.

Sometimes, both.

Base vs Plus

Remember The Base+ Framework?

We can think of most day-to-day outfits in two layers:

The Base: The main clothing pieces. To keep things simple, this is usually a bottom and a top, or a dress/one-piece.

The Plus: The shoes, bag, jewelry, belt, hat, scarf, sunglasses, socks, hair accessories, layering pieces, or styling details that change how the outfit reads.

One thing I’d pay attention to when scoring summer outfits is where your points are coming from.

Are most of your Interest Elements coming from The Base? Or are they coming from The Plus?

Neither is better or worse, but this observation can tell you a lot about your styling preferences.

More Interesting Clothing (Base)

The diagnostic question for any summer piece: is this interesting enough to stand on its own?

More Deliberate Accessories (Plus)

In summer, accessories often pick up more of the visual work.

Unlike clothing, they add interest without adding much (if any) additional heat.

A Note on Summer Textures

Texture is one of the easiest ways to add visual interest, but we often associate texture with the cooler months (e.g. suede, chunky knits, velvet, fur, corduroy).

So here are some summer-friendly textures to consider:

• open knits

• crochet

• terry cloth

• broderie anglaise / eyelet

• metallics

• nylon

• jelly

• sheer fabrics / mesh

• fringe

• beads

• satin

• lace

A Note on Contrast

Outfit Math helps you measure a look’s level of visual interest, but it doesn’t capture everything.

One extra layer to pay attention to is contrast.

Contrast is not about adding more points. It’s about how items or elements relate to one other.

Any of the Interest Elements in your outfit can be contrasted by opposing Interest Elements to create an even more unique look.

For instance:

• contrasting textures: leather + lace, satin + poplin

• contrasting shape: oversized vs slim, sculptural vs flowing, baggy + tiny

• contrasting prints: print mixing inherently creates contrast

• contrasting colors: high value contrast (e.g. black + white), high energetic contrast (e.g. muted + bright), or playful color combinations (complementary, analogous, triadic)

Scoring Some Summer Looks

Now let’s make this practical with five examples of completely different summer looks.

Then, we’ll tackle this week’s exercise, below.

Look 1 — 11 points

This is a great example of a summer look that includes very few items but still packs a punch.

• dress, +4 points: base + color + print + detail

• sandals, +2 points: base + texture

• bag, +4 points: base + color + texture + shape

• simple earrings, +1 point: base only

Look 2 — 10 points

By contrast, this look uses simpler pieces, but more of them. Same level of visual interest, completely different vibe.

• t-shirt, +1 point: base only

• pants, +1 point: base only

• checked shirt, +2 points: base + print

• sandals, +1 point: base only

• headband, +1 point: base only

• sunglasses, +2 points: base + shape

• bag, +1 point: base only

• watch, +1 point: base only

The 12 Competencies of Personal Style give you tools for evaluating an outfit, but how do you know when your outfit is complete?

Some outfits check all the boxes and still feel off.

The fit is right. The proportions work. The colors are intentional.

You look in the mirror and something’s missing, but you have no idea how to fix it.

Point-based outfit systems have been trying to bridge this gap for years.

The core idea is sound: every outfit has a measurable level of visual interest.

Too much, and the look feels overwhelming. Too little, and it doesn’t look “styled.”

But most of these systems share the same critical flaw.

They set a universal target (aim for 7 points) and sort pieces into categories (basics are one point, statements are two). Just add until you hit the magic number!

Two problems. That number is theirs, not yours. And knowing a piece is “a statement” doesn’t tell you what makes it one, or how to make an outfit more interesting. Sure, it might be simple, but you’re not really learning how to wear your personal style.

Outfit Math is different in two key ways:

• The score is personal. There is no universally correct total.

• Scoring is tied to the things that actually impact your outfit: the individual elements of visual interest.

Here’s how it works.

• color type

• body type

• core style

• the wardrobe framework

• wardrobe editing

• fit + measurements

• silhouette + proportion

• color story

• texture

• multidimensional style

• conflict + balance

• full outfits

The Scoring System

Every item in an outfit earns +1 base point automatically. Then, +1 additional point is added for each Interest Element: color energy, texture, shape, print, detail.

For example:

• a plain white t-shirt, 1 point (base only)

• an ivory boucle jacket, 2 points (base + texture)

• a plum blazer with sculptural sleeves, 3 points (base + color + shape)

• a white t-shirt with cutout detail, 2 points (base + detail)

• a straight-leg gingham trouser, 2 points (base + print)

The 5 Interest Elements

Color Energy

All non-neutral colors earn +1 additional points.

+1: bright red, plum-brown, dusty rose, sage, emerald, lemon yellow, etc.

+0: black, white, ivory, gray, navy, taupe, classic brown tones

Per the Tibi Color Ring, Ring 3 (muted, dimensional colors) and Ring 4 (brights) both contribute one point each.

Ring 1 (black) and Ring 2 (traditional neutrals) do not contribute additional points.

Texture

Any attention-grabbing (non-flat) texture earns +1 additional points.

+1: boucle, sequins, velvet, patent leather, metallics, lace, beading, etc.

+0: cotton jersey, poplin, fine gage knits, denim, canvas, Nappa leather, etc.

Distinctive Shape

Non-standard garment shapes earn +1 additional points.

+1: sculptural sleeves, dramatic volume, asymmetry, exaggerated proportions, etc.

+0: standard shapes, t-shirts, straight-leg trousers, simple a-line silhouettes, etc.

Pattern or Print

Any pattern, print, motif, or graphic earns +1 additional point.

+1: stripes, plaids, florals, animal prints, geometric and abstract prints, graphics

+0: solids.

Note that techniques such as jacquard might qualify as a pattern and a texture.

Notable Detail

Any element of construction or embellishment that draws the eye earns +1 additional point.

+1: cutouts, ruching, embellishment, statement hardware, ornate buttons, significant collar or sleeve detail.

+0: standard construction, matching/tonal buttons, simple hardware, classic pleats, etc.

Scoring an Outfit

For example, I scored these looks from my Indyx Closet (more examples in the Exercise 12-5 below).

Look 1 — 11 points

• dress, +2 points: base + print

• t-shirt, +1 point: base only

• boots, +2 points: base + shape

• bag, +1 point: base only

• earrings, +1 point: base only

• necklace, +2 points: base + shape (unique cord and glass flower)

• glasses (not pictured), +2 points: base + print (tortoise shell)

Look 2 — 15 points

• skirt, +2 points: base + detail (wrap-over with metal buckles)

What to keep, what to get rid of, what colors to buy, the “perfect” capsule checklist.

And if that advice has ever worked for you (really worked, in a lasting way), you probably don’t need to read this.

But if you’ve tried to fix your style before and ended up back in the same place (a closet full of clothes, still not feeling like yourself, still defaulting to the same five outfits every day), the problem was never the clothes.

The problem is where you started.

Your wardrobe isn’t random. Every choice you’ve made (what you bought, what you kept, what you reach for) reflects something.

It reflects what you believe about yourself right now: who you are, what you’re allowed to want, what kind of person wears that.

Your wardrobe is a physical map of your self-identity.

Editing your wardrobe without examining your identity is like repainting a house built on a cracked foundation.

It might look better for a while. Then the cracks show through again.

Reinventing your style has never worked because you changed the output (the clothes) without changing the input (your self-identity).

Style Lags Self-Identity

Self-identity isn’t static. It shifts with your life, and your wardrobe tends to lag behind.

A new job, a new city, becoming a mother, the end of an era, or a new beginning: these transitions actually change who you are.

Something inside you knows this. And that’s why you shop.

Every purchase is an attempt to repair your identity.

Every new piece allows you to momentarily access an ideal version of yourself.

You’re craving Identity-Style alignment. The problem is, you still don’t fully know who you’re becoming.

So, the new clothes feel right for a while. And then, they don’t.

The impulse to reinvent your style is real.

But you have to start at the start.

Before Reinventing Your Style

Starting at the start means doing the identity work first.

Getting clear on who you are now and, more importantly, who you’re becoming.

This is slower than buying something new. It doesn’t produce a shopping list. But it’s the only part of this work that produces something that lasts: a clear sense of who you are.

Before your next wardrobe purchase, decluttering session, or attempt at reinventing your style, ask one question:

Am I dressing for who I’ve been, or for who I’m becoming?

Most people dress from a smaller fraction of what they own than they realize.

“I default to the same outfits all the time” is the second most-common wardrobe struggle that I see with my Indyx and Capsule clients alike.

Usually, this is an energy and efficiency problem, not a wardrobe or creativity problem.

You find a few combinations that work, and you stick to them because they work.

Then, you get bored.

But your wardrobe contains so many more possibilities. You just haven’t found the right combinations yet.

• color type

• body type

• core style

• the wardrobe framework

• multidimensional style

• conflict + balance

• full outfits

The Outfits You Didn’t Know You Had

The combinations you’ve never tried aren’t necessarily bad. They’re just undiscovered.

So, how do you really discover all of the possibilities?

You style your full wardrobe.

I know, this sounds overwhelming. Trust me, it’s worth it. And I have a few tips to make it fun and easy to do.

Whenever I work with a Capsule client, I style their entire wardrobe: every possible combination of top, bottom, dress, and layer.

Then, I eliminate the combinations that just don’t work (this could be due to proportion, color combination, practicality level, style alignment, etc). Everything that passes is then styled into a full look, including shoes, bag, additional layers, jewelry, and accessories.

What comes out of that session isn’t just a list of new outfit ideas. It’s a full wardrobe system.

Once you’ve gone through this exercise, getting dressed is a completely new experience. You’re not building from scratch each morning, or defaulting to the same five outfits. You’re choosing from a library of looks that you’ve already built.

Two Methods

Digital

If you use Indyx (), you can create outfit boards from your catalogued pieces without leaving the couch. It’s fast, fun, and the documentation is built in.

If you don’t use Indyx, any presentation or slide software works (Keynote, PowerPoint, Canva): photograph each piece, drop them into slides, and arrange your combinations.

IRL

Self-explanatory, but you can always pull from your physical wardrobe and physically assemble the combinations, on your body or on a flat surface. Use mirror selfies or flat lays for documentation.

This is more time-intensive, but often more revealing: you’ll notice things about fit, texture, and proportion that don’t translate fully in photos. If you have the time and your wardrobe is a manageable size, this is the more thorough option.

Don’t Forget to Document

Either method works. What doesn’t work is doing this without documenting the results. Without a record, your new discoveries evaporate within a few days and you’re back to the same defaults. The goal is a reliable, lasting reference that you can always return to.

The Process

Start with tops and bottoms, the foundation of most outfits. For each combination, challenge yourself to complete the outfit: shoes, bag, layers, jewelry. Then, assess the finished look.

Use what you know. Use Color Story to evaluate the palette, Body Type to check the proportions, Style Words to assess whether the direction is right for you, the Base+ Framework to finish each look.

Everything you’ve built across this course is applicable here, and you can revisit each section using the table of contents above.

Some combinations will be an obvious no. Some will be an obvious yes.

The ones worth slowing down for are the ones that almost work: a different shoe, a different layer, a different styling approach can make the difference between a dead end and a really strong outfit.

How to Make the Most of This Exercise

Combinations that work: document them.

Add to your Outfit Journal or log in Indyx. These are ready-to-wear looks. You don’t have to think them through again.

Combinations that don’t work: consider the reasons why.

This is more useful than just moving on. Over time, these observations will help you refine your style and make better styling decisions.

Pieces that don’t combine well with anything: flag them.

A piece with no working combinations isn’t necessarily a mistake, but it’s worth a second look. Sometimes the problem is the piece. Sometimes it’s that one missing item that could unlock it.

If you consistently get 80% of the way to a good outfit and run short on the right shoe, the right outer layer, or a base piece in the right color, that’s a specific gap. Now, you can shop for something with a clear brief rather than a general sense that something is missing.

Exercise 12-4: The Full Wardrobe Styling Session

This exercise works with any wardrobe, not just a perfect one. Even a wardrobe in progress contains more working combinations than you think. Start where you are.

Set aside two to three hours. This is not a quick exercise, and rushing it means missing combinations. Do it when you can give it proper attention. You may even want to tackle this in chunks over the course of several days (e.g. create all possible combinations with one top, then move onto the next top in a future session).

Step 1: Choose Your Method

Decide before you start: digital (Indyx) or IRL. Commit to it.

If you’re using Indyx and your wardrobe isn’t fully catalogued, this exercise is a good way to start. If you’re working IRL, clear a space with a full-length mirror and have your phone ready to document all of your new outfit ideas.

Step 2: Work Systematically

Go systematically. Not by intuition, but combination by combination.

Every top against every bottom.

This takes out the guesswork and minimizes decision fatigue.

Step 3: Complete Each Combination

For every base pairing, add shoes, a bag, layering pieces, and accessories.

Assess the full outfit, not just the individual pieces. All 12 Competencies come into play here.

Challenge yourself to give each combination a chance.

Even a base combination that’s lacking a specific shoe, layer, or accessory is still a working outfit once you’ve added those key pieces to your wardrobe. Worth documenting if you genuinely like the direction and intend to fill the necessary wardrobe gaps.

Step 4: Document What Works

Every successful outfit gets photographed or saved in Outfit Journal, an Indyx outfit board, or a dedicated photo album.

Give each outfit a brief note if it helps (Indyx is great for this): the occasion it’s suited for, what makes it work, any adjustments that might improve it.

Step 5: Flag What Doesn’t Work

For pieces or combinations that don’t work, consider logging a short note on why. Keep it brief. You’re building pattern recognition, not writing an editorial.

Step 6: Review Your Findings

When the session is done, reflect on your newly created outfit library:

• Which pieces appeared in the most outfits? These could be your most valuable wardrobe assets.

• Which pieces never made the cut? Worth a second look.

• What gap(s) showed up consistently across multiple outfits? These may be the keys to unlocking tons of new outfit combinations.

Complete this once, and getting dressed will never be the same again.

You’ve just built one outfit that genuinely feels like you. Now let’s do seven more.

The idea of seven style uniforms (seven formulas that cover the range of your actual life, rotated by season) has circulated in style circles for several years now.

But I don’t see this as a passing trend. It’s a practical tool. The more you use it, the easier getting dressed becomes.

What matters is the logic: looking great isn’t about unlimited outfit ideas. It’s about having a small number of really good ones.

• body type

• core style

• the wardrobe framework

• wardrobe editing

• fit + measurements

• silhouette + proportion

• color story

• multidimensional style

• full outfits

The Style Uniform Concept

A Style Uniform is not a specific outfit.

It’s a formula: a short description of the key elements that make a look work for a particular context.

Something like:

• Tailored Trousers + Relaxed Top + Practical Flat + Interesting Bag

• Long Shorts + Slim Top + Open Shoe + Structured Layer

• Mini Dress + Sneakers + Light Layer + Ball Cap

The formula doesn’t name specific pieces. It names the items or characteristics that matter to you: elements like the specific silhouette, the level of structure, the proportion, the key items that anchor the look or add practicality.

Across the last two entries, you built One Great Outfit. This is the same logic, extended: one formula for each of your seven most common life contexts.

This post from is a great example of what that looks like in practice.

One Wardrobe, Not Seven

Before you start scribbling down outfit formulas, remember that the goal is not to design seven separate personas.

It’s to design seven formulas that draw from the same wardrobe, the same persona, just in different life contexts (we call these Style Modes).

A well-chosen Essential shows up across multiple Modes. And that’s often what makes it worth having in the first place.

The trouser that works for your client meeting formula might also anchor your going-out formula and elevate your weekend formula.

This is the concept calls the non-bifurcated wardrobe. One wardrobe, used across your whole life.

The more overlap between your uniforms, the more your style reads as integrated rather than compartmentalized.

It also means that this exercise is simpler than it looks. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel with every new formula.

Wear It Again and Change One Thing

Once a formula is working, the lowest-friction way to develop it isn’t to start over each time. It’s to wear essentially the same combination next time you dress for that context, and change one thing.

Different shoe. Different bag. Different outer layer. Different jewelry. Same base.

This is how you learn which elements of each formula make up the core, and which ones you can play around with.

Over time, this is how a formula becomes genuinely yours: not by getting it perfect once, but by wearing it so much that it becomes instinctual.

This refinement process takes real work, but it’s also where the outfit becomes truly yours.

The Try-On Changes Everything

No outfit can ever be finished until you see it on your body.

Proportions change, colors interact, a shoe that seemed perfect might feel too heavy in real life.

This is not a failure; it’s part of the process.

Your first draft gives you something to test. Trying it on gives you the real information.

Refinement Is Not Starting Over

When an outfit does not immediately land, the temptation is to abandon it. Don’t.

Most of the time, the issue is not the entire outfit. It is one or two elements: a proportion that needs adjusting, a shoe that is too heavy or too delicate, a color that needs repeating or softening, a lack of texture that’s making the outfit feel flat, an accessory that’s doing too much or not enough, a styling detail that needs more attention.

This is why the last few modules are important. You now have tools for diagnosing the outfit instead of just reacting to it.

One Change at a Time

The most effective refinement method is also the most counterintuitive: don’t fix everything at once.

Instead, wear the outfit multiple times and each time, change just one element.

When you change several things at once, you lose track of which adjustment mattered. When you change one thing, you can see its effect. Over time, this builds something more useful than a single finished outfit. It builds your styling muscle.

The exercise below assigns a lens to each of seven sessions: a specific competency or question to focus on that day.

Your creative direction images and Style Brief stay active filters throughout. Every lens is also an opportunity to return to the direction you set and ask what’s still missing, or how the current version compares to where you started.

If you want to complete this in a week, you’ll be wearing the same outfit daily. That’s the fastest path. If that’s not realistic, space the sessions out over two to three weeks. What matters is that each session has a focus, and that you make one deliberate change per session before the next.

Wear It Before You Decide

Once the outfit feels close, wear it.

Not just for the mirror photo.

Actually wear it (around the house, on an errand, to the thing) for long enough to understand how it feels.

Notice:

• Can I move in this?

• Do I feel like myself?

• Am I distracted by anything?

• Does it support the Mode I built it for?

• Does it express the creative direction I’m going for?

Some outfits look great standing still and fall apart in motion. Others look simple in the mirror but feel great throughout the day. Wearing it IRL is the only way to find out.

Why One Outfit

Building your personal style can feel truly overwhelming. It would be unrealistic to expect that an entire wardrobe could be rebuilt overnight.

So, across the next two lessons, I’m just asking you to build One Great Outfit.

One outfit, for one specific context, built with intention using the 12 Competencies of Personal Style.

“Building a wardrobe that finally feels like me” is a goal large enough that some of us never even truly start. Or, we tackle little bits and pieces here and there, jumping around and never making any measurable progress.

The pressure to get everything right at once is one of the main reasons people stay stuck in the planning phase indefinitely.

This exercise removes that pressure.

You only need One Great Outfit to kickstart your style in real life.

Good vs. Great

Most outfits are good.

They meet the requirements: weather-appropriate, occasion-appropriate, nothing obviously wrong. They get you out the door.

A great outfit reflects who you are and who you want to be.

It meets the practical requirements, but it goes further: into expression, intention, the details that make the difference between feeling like yourself and just feeling dressed. The finishing touches you usually skip.

The One Great Outfit is a microcosm of your developing personal style. One specific look that proves it’s all possible.

Start with Constraints

Before you pull a single piece from your closet, you need to know what you’re building for.

An outfit built without context is a styling exercise. An outfit built with context is actually wearable.

Working with constraints is challenging, but it forces the kind of critical and creative thinking that actually produces something good.

Three questions to answer before you begin:

• What life Mode are you dressing for?
  Pick from the Modes you’ve mapped throughout the course. If it helps, get specific: not just “work” but “client meetings.” The tighter the context, the better.

• What are your practical constraints?
  Weather, temperature, how much you’ll be on your feet, whether the outfit needs to carry you through more than one part of the day. Note them. They’ll narrow your decisions in useful ways.

• How do you want to feel?
  Not just look, but feel. If it’s helpful, pull from your Style Words and modifiers.

The answers to these three questions are crucial for building One Great Outfit that works in real life.

Find Your Direction

Before you open your closet, find 1 to 3 images that capture the feeling of the outfit you’re building.

Start with your mood board, but narrow it down.

This is not an outfit to copy. It’s your creative direction.

A photograph that captures a certain color palette, a texture, a key item, or styling element is just as useful as an outfit reference. What you’re looking for is visual clarity, not a cut-and-paste outfit template.

These images work with your Style Brief rather than replacing it. Your brief gives you the data: your Color Stories, your Style Words, your fit parameters. These images give you the feeling.

Start with Your Anchor

Now you can open your closet.

Using The Wardrobe Framework, the easiest place to start building One Great Outfit is with one Essential that fits your context: a piece you already know works for this Mode, that already feels great on your body, and aligns with your style direction.

It’s the reliable piece, not necessarily the most interesting one.

Examples:

• a great pair of trousers

• your favorite denim

• a go-to blazer

• your most-worn summer dress

If you want to start with a Statement piece instead, that’s a valid anchor too. Especially if that piece represents where your style is going, building around it could be exactly the right move.

The key is starting with something you feel clear about. One decision down.

Build the First Draft

Once you have your constraints, your direction images, and your anchor, the next step is not perfection; it’s a first draft.

By the end of this exercise, you’ll have the first draft of your One Great Outfit. Next week, we’ll refine it.

Which, in this case, is me.

Here’s what I’ve actually been reaching for.

I Woke Up Like This (Sort Of)

Looks like you tried, requires almost no effort.

Your Skin But Better, Pt 1 — This* is what I reach for on mornings when a full routine just isn’t happening (so… most mornings). It’s super hydrating and makes my skin feel brighter and more even. Your skin but better.

Your Skin But Better, Pt 2 — I tan easily but I have a truly impressive farmer’s tan from spending most of the year avoiding skimpy clothes and bathing suits. This* evens everything out gradually, looks natural, and is very low upkeep. A must have for an upcoming wedding I’m attending (wedding guest dress shared below). Farmer’s tan will not be welcome.

A Subtle Fragrance — During pregnancy and postpartum, I pretty much can’t stand any sort of fragrance. My usual favorites are borderline unwearable. This body mist* is light and refreshing, which makes it the perfect alternative. Bergamot & Hinoki has definitely earned its own place in my top rotation.

A Non-Aerosol Dry Shampoo — Back when I worked in an office, I did my hair nearly every morning. Once I became a mom, that completely went out the window. I wash every two to three days now, style once on day one, refresh on days two and three. This dry shampoo* is what makes it possible. I also have the unfortunate gift of eczema on my eyelids, which flares up whenever I use aerosol products (including dry shampoo). So the brush/powder application is key for me. A complete game-changer.

I Hate Maternity Clothes (Get These Instead)

Elastic waistbands and flexible silhouettes are my best friend.

The Elevated Pull-On Pant — The LESET Arielle Pocket Pant is my go-to elevated-comfy pant at the moment. It works before, during, and after pregnancy (which is the real bar for anything I’m buying right now). I also have a cotton version from Deiji Studios that is perfect for warmer weather. Both are great alternatives for the usual pregnancy workhorses (for me, that’s the Lululemon Align leggings and Spanx AirEssentials pants which have certainly earned their mention here but perhaps aren’t the chicest of options).

A Cool Skirt — Same logic in skirt form: I’ve worn several of Tibi’s elastic waist skirts during both pregnancies. They’re the only ones that actually feel like me: relaxed, clean, and a bit unexpected. Tibi reliably hits that perfect balance.

The Surprisingly Adaptable Top — This shirred-back top from Tibi is technically a t-shirt, but the adjustable ruched back makes it work across pregnancy in a way most tops don’t. You can wear it backwards to show off the bump. Plus, I can’t wait to style it post-pregnancy and it seems breastfeeding-friendly, too (at least for me).

The Non-Maternity Wedding Guest Dress — This dress is gorgeous. It has enough room that true size has worked throughout my pregnancy without being a maternity dress. I’m wearing it to a wedding in a few weeks and I was a little bit nervous about the bra situation, but it actually looks amazing even without a bra. I’ve already recommended it to a client who also loves it. And comes in a short black cotton broderie version which is equally good.

Something Bold

Pregnancy definitely makes your wardrobe feel really small. Not just because fewer things fit, but because you stop reaching for anything that isn’t pure comfort and practicality. Problem is, this gets boring, fast.

Bold accessories are my easy fix, and this Stone Fruit Ranch Ring is a really cool option. Rings are specifically good since they can’t be yanked, grabbed, or snagged by your little ones.

Caveat: my fingers swelled a lot at the end of my last pregnancy, so this tip has an expiration date. Thankfully, it’s only temporary.

My Feet Hurt (But at Least They’re Chic)

To be clear, it’s not the shoes. My feet just hurt, and there’s no way I’m wearing heels.

I’ve worn my Ganni lace-up ballet flats a lot (43 times to be exact), so I decided to invest in another interesting ballet flat for summer.

These studded black mesh flats are my solution. Interesting enough to feel intentional, light enough for summer. The simple mesh version is gorgeous too, but I chose the studded ones because I truly can’t be bothered to paint my toenails at the moment (IYKYK).

A jeans-and-tee outfit is never just a jeans-and-tee outfit.

With sneakers, a belt bag, and a baseball cap, it reads casual and sporty.

With a pointed heel, silver jewelry, and structured black bag, it reads sharp and chic.

With a chunky boot, oversized glasses, and a slouchy leather bag, it feels more grounded and perhaps a little undone.

Regardless of the fit or proportions, these elements have a massive impact.

The Base+ Framework

We can think of most day-to-day outfits in two layers:

The Base: The main clothing pieces. To keep things simple, this is usually a bottom and a top, or a dress/one-piece.

The Plus: The shoes, bag, jewelry, belt, hat, scarf, sunglasses, socks, hair accessories, layering pieces, or styling details that change how the outfit reads.

The Base gives the outfit its foundation. This is where we focus most on fit, proportions, and silhouette.

The Plus is where we can shift the direction.

A white tee and jeans can be casual, polished, sporty, edgy, classic, playful, minimal, or romantic depending on what you add to it.

A slip dress can feel delicate, formal, grungy, minimalist, sensual, or casual depending almost entirely on the shoes, bag, jewelry, and layering pieces.

This is one of the easiest ways to get more range from your wardrobe without adding more clothes.

You don’t always need a new outfit, sometimes you just need a better Plus.

The Cheat Code to Contrast

In the last two lessons, we talked about conflict, contrast, and balance.

Shoes, bags, and accessories are often the easiest places to apply those ideas. They’re low-risk and (at least in the case of most bags and accessories) you can take them off throughout the day if you decide they’re not working for you.

They can add contrast through:

• formality

• visual weight

• texture

• color

• shape

• style direction

A delicate dress with a delicate sandal might feel soft and cohesive. The same dress with a chunky boot creates contrast.

A simple outfit with simple jewelry might feel clean and understated. The same outfit with a sculptural earring or beaded bag suddenly has a stronger point of view.

A casual outfit with sneakers might feel practical. The same outfit with a sleek loafer or sharp bag feels more intentional.

This doesn’t mean the more unexpected option is always better. Sometimes the simple version is exactly right.

The point is that these elements give you options.

Matching vs Styling

A lot of people choose shoes, bags, and accessories by asking: Does this match?

A better question is: What does this add?

Does it add ease? Sharpness? Softness? Polish? Playfulness? Weight? Contrast? Texture? A focal point?

A black top does not automatically need a black shoe.

A feminine dress does not automatically need a feminine sandal.

A casual outfit does not automatically need a casual bag.

The goal is not always to repeat what is already happening in the outfit. Often, the most interesting choice is the one that adds a new dimension while still relating to the whole.

That’s the difference between matching and styling.

The “Too” Test, Take 2

If an outfit feels close but not quite right, try adjusting the Plus before rebuilding the entire outfit.

If the outfit feels too soft, try:

• a heavy shoe

• a structured bag

• sharp jewelry

• a dark or rugged accessory

If the outfit feels too polished, try:

• a casual or funky shoe

• a slouchy bag

• mismatched jewelry

• an undone layer

If the outfit feels too flat, try:

• color contrast

• texture contrast

• a more interesting shoe

• an unexpected accessory

If the outfit feels too busy, try:

• a simple shoe

• a simple bag

• fewer accessories

• a tonal layer

If the outfit feels too casual, try:

• a sleek leather shoe

• a structured bag

• bold jewelry

• an expressive hairstyle or hair accessory

Small changes make a huge difference.

That’s the point of The Base+ Framework. You are not starting over every time something feels off. You’re making simple adjustments and building your personal style toolbox along the way.

But what if balance isn’t the goal? What if “getting it right” is holding you back? What if you want to feel more interesting, more expressive, or a little unexpected?

This is where contrast, and sometimes even conflict, start to become useful styling tools.

Contrast vs. Conflict

As a reminder from the previous lesson:

Contrast is when two or more elements of an outfit are different in a way that enhances the overall look.

Conflict occurs when one or more elements of an outfit feels incompatible with another, or with the whole.

These two concepts sit along the same spectrum. Contrast is more subtle, but conflict is what happens when contrast becomes extreme.

Sometimes conflict reads as:

• intriguing

• unexpected

• a little off (in a good way)

And sometimes it just feels… off.

There isn’t a strict line between contrast and conflict. It’s more of a sliding scale. And it’s completely determined by your own personal style, your preferences, and your comfort level.

On one end, you have subtle contrast. On the other end, you have combinations that feel more exaggerated, more polarizing, or even slightly incompatible.

Here are some examples of the contrast-conflict spectrum from mild (contrast), to medium (tension), to strong (conflict):

• silk slip + lug sole loafer

• delicate dress + bomber

• tailored suit + running sneaker

• sequins + utility jacket

• romantic blouse + cargo pant

• evening skirt + rugby shirt

• ornate piece + gorpcore piece

• pristine tailoring + distressed element

• hyper-feminine + aggressively utilitarian footwear

The thing about conflict is that our perceptions are always shifting.

Many combinations we now consider stylish were once considered wrong. Conflict has a way of becoming convention.

Conflict in Action

Some style aesthetics you may be aware of that often incorporate elements of conflict include:

• avant-garde — distorted proportions, asymmetry, structure + collapse (think Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens)

• punk — polished + destroyed, rebellion + symbolism (Vivienne Westwood, Junya Watanabe)

• dark romantic — softness + severity, delicate + dark, sensual + austere (think Ann Demeulemeester, Haider Ackermann, Alexander McQueen)

• deconstructed minimalism — clean + disrupted, restrained + odd (Maison Margiela, Helmut Lang, Tibi)

• gorpcore — outdoors + urban, pragmatism + fashion (think andWander, Salomon)

• grunge — slip dress + combat boots, worn-out + delicate, short + long (iconic 1992 Marc Jacobs collection)

• camp — intentionally too much, “bad taste” turned art (think Moschino, Vivienne Westwood)

• wabi-sabi — refined + imperfect, unfinished + intentional, broken + beautiful (this one is harder to pinpoint, but think Issey Miyake, Lemaire)

Vivienne Westwood is a particularly interesting case study, spanning multiple of these ideas (although in a category of her own): historical romanticism, grunge, punk, camp/irony, and elements of dark romantic.

From Fixing to Creating

Using conflict requires one simple mindset shift: from “fixing” to creating.

Conflict is about creative expression. It inherently breaks the rules.

Most people naturally gravitate toward balance or contrast, rather than conflict. Contrast feels wearable. It creates interest without pushing too far.

Conflict is different. It’s more subjective, more personal, and often a little uncomfortable. But that’s exactly why some people are drawn to it.

Used intentionally, conflict can create a strong point of view and make an outfit feel more memorable.

What makes conflict interesting is that it can create something balance alone often can’t: surprise.

But there’s still a difference between an outfit that works… and one that really clicks.

That last 10% can make a huge difference.

This is where the concepts of conflict, contrast, and balance come in.

Not as rules, but tools for understanding what’s happening in an outfit, and how to adjust it with intention.

Conflict, Contrast, and Balance

Conflict occurs when one or more elements of an outfit feels incompatible with another, or with the whole.

Contrast is when two or more elements of an outfit are different in a way that enhances the overall look.

Balance is when all elements of an outfit work together in harmony to create a complete and cohesive look.

Balance is usually the goal, but it doesn’t mean everything has to “match.”

A balanced outfit can still include contrast, and even a bit of tension, as long as it feels intentional and resolved.

Identifying Conflict

Conflict occurs when elements feel disconnected from each other. For example, when two pieces are competing in a way that doesn’t quite make sense.

There’s a lot of nuance and personal opinion that goes into determining what feels like conflict to you. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• two competing focal points

• a single element that unintentionally drowns out the rest of the look

• pairings that hold such different contextual or societal meanings that they “just don’t go together” (an extreme example could be worn-out hole-y pajama bottoms styled with a pristine tailored blazer with princess seams)

These create visual tension, but not the good kind.

Assessing Contrast

On the other end of the spectrum, an outfit can feel flat when everything is too similar.

When everything adheres to the same style trope, or everything has the same proportion, there is no contrast.

The result isn’t an outfit that’s wrong per se, it’s just a little one-dimensional.

Adding contrast creates interest. You can do that by:

• pairing items that are different in style, but still retain some relationship to one another (an example could be a flowy but refined elastic-waist pant with a relaxed-fit blazer, contrasting casual with structure but not in a way that creates conflict)

• introducing variation in proportion or texture

• adding a pop of color

This is often the difference between an outfit that feels fine and one that feels styled.

The “Too” Test

A simple way to start balancing an outfit is to ask: Do I feel too…?

• too feminine

• too casual

• too polished

• too soft

• too structured

• too minimal

• too busy

• too exposed

• too covered-up

Too busy? Reduce conflicting elements by removing something. Too feminine? Add a masculine, structured, or casual element to create contrast. Too covered-up? Show some skin or swap in a slim element to balance the look.

You don’t need a completely new outfit, you need the right adjustment.

Employing Opposites

So, let’s talk about one of the many tools you can use to achieve balance: opposites.

Most of the time, balance isn’t achieved by just adding more. Often, one or two surgical swaps will do the trick. But, how do you decide what to change?

Exercise 11-1: Employing Opposites

This exercise is all about correcting imbalance in real time.

Not by starting over, just by making one or two strategic adjustments.

Step 1: Identify the Imbalance

Start with an outfit that isn’t quite working for you.

Do the “Too” Test. Do I feel too…?

• too feminine

• too polished

• too casual

• too soft

• too structured

• too minimal

• too busy

• too covered-up

Don’t overthink it. Go with your first instinct.

Step 2: Brainstorm Opposites

Now, instead of jumping to a solution, let’s brainstorm some opposites.

There’s never just one “fix.” And we don’t have to take opposites too literally here.

For example, if you feel too feminine, some opposites might be:

• masculine

• structured

• sporty

• casual

• grounded

If you feel too polished, some opposites might be:

• undone

• relaxed

• textured

• quirky

If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, think about why you feel too something. What other adjectives describe the elements of your look that feel like too much, and what are some opposites to those adjectives?

The goal here is not to find the “right” answer. It’s to see that you have options, and to pick the one that feels most like you.

Step 3: Apply Your Opposite

Now choose one direction and apply it.

This doesn’t have to mean changing the entire outfit. Small tweaks often do the trick.

You can create contrast using:

• color

• shoes

• bags or accessories

• layering pieces (jackets, shirts, knits)

• proportion adjustments

• textures

• styling techniques (tucking, untucking, cuffing, rolling sleeves, unbuttoning, tying, etc.)

Resist the urge to start from scratch. Change just one thing at a time, then re-assess.

Step 4: Track Patterns Over Time

Over time, this becomes more intuitive, but at first, it helps to pay attention.

After you adjust, ask:

• Did this feel more balanced?

• Which “opposite” worked best for me?

• Is this a styling technique I want to use again?

• What are my most common answers to the “Too” Test?

You don’t have to start from scratch when an outfit feels off.

When you think in terms of conflict, contrast, and balance, you start to see new ways to make your existing wardrobe work for you.

You can adjust, refine, and move on. Over time, you’ll build your sense of style intuition. That awareness helps you build not just better outfits, but a better wardrobe.

As I always say: TOOLS not rules.

Color Type, Body Type, Core Style… all of these tools are designed to make your style clearer.

But there’s a potential downside.

The more rules you learn, the easier it is to feel boxed in by them.

• color type

• body type

• core style

• the wardrobe framework

• wardrobe editing

• fit + measurements

• silhouette + proportion

• color story

• texture

• multidimensional style

• conflict + balance

• full outfits

Tools, Not Rules

Style systems exist to give you language.

They help you:

• understand what you’re seeing

• identify patterns

• make more intentional choices

But they are not requirements.

They don’t define what you’re allowed to wear and they don’t determine whether something is “correct.”

They simply give you information.

What you do with that information is up to you!

Harmony is Not (Always) the Goal

Style systems are often focused on creating harmony or balance. We learn what works with our bodies, what aligns with our coloring, and how to create visual balance.

But harmony is just one option.

Contrast is equally valid, and sometimes it’s even more interesting, expressive, and sometimes more you.

Intention is (Always) the Goal

There’s a difference between breaking a rule because you don’t know what you’re doing, and breaking a rule because you’ve chosen to.

This is where everything you’ve learned becomes even more useful.

You can choose to:

• wear a color outside your palette

• use a texture that contrasts with your body type

• add a weird shoe or bag

• play with proportions that aren’t traditionally “flattering”

When you understand the elements you’re working with, you can add contrast and still look intentional.

Personal Style Rules (The Only Ones that Matter)

Whether you realize it or not, you already have your own rules.

They might sound like:

• I prioritize comfort

• I avoid stiff fabrics

• I always include one unexpected element

• I don’t buy occasion-only clothing

• I prefer structure over drape

• I don’t like high contrast

These rules aren’t universal, but they’re personal. And they’re often more useful than external guidelines, because they reflect what actually works for you.

The Rules That Might Be Limiting You

At the same time, there are often rules you’ve picked up that don’t serve you.

They’re those mantras that stick in your head on repeat. They might sound right but they don’t sit right. And to be honest, they might be holding you back.

• Petites shouldn’t wear oversized clothing

• Winters shouldn’t wear beige

• Mothers should dress practically

• I can’t pull that off

Some of these come from style systems, some come from culture, friends, or family.

But the important fact is: They’re optional.

Choosing What to Keep (and What to Ignore)

The goal isn’t to reject all structure, it’s to decide what’s useful.

You might keep:

• guidelines that consistently make your outfits feel better

• frameworks that help you get dressed more easily

And let go of:

• rules that feel restrictive

• expectations that don’t reflect your life

• ideas that limit your creativity

This is where your style becomes truly personal. To develop real personal style clarity, you ultimately have to define your own rules.
