You are going to lose money. You are going to be wrong. You are going to take a trade that checks every box: the trend, the volume, the breakout level, and the market will still turn around and slap you in the face.

That’s trading.

What matters is what you do next.

The Lie We Tell Ourselves

A lot of aspiring traders start out believing that enough studying will eventually eliminate failure. Find the right indicator. Build the perfect system. Follow the right guru. Backtest one more strategy at 2 AM.

Eventually, everything will click and the losses will disappear.

They won’t.

The traders who stick around learn something very different. They learn how to deal with failure, study it, and use it to improve.

Price Pritchett and the Quantum Leap

In his book You², performance psychologist Price Pritchett makes an interesting argument: major improvements often come from pushing beyond the point where you feel comfortable.

That means encountering setbacks along the way.

Pritchett describes failure as a resource. It shows you where the limits are. It gives you information you wouldn’t get by staying safely inside what you already know.

That idea applies directly to trading.

A losing trade gives you information. Maybe the setup wasn’t as strong as you thought. Maybe the entry was too aggressive. Maybe the market environment had changed. Maybe you simply got caught on the wrong side of a perfectly reasonable trade.

The important part is figuring out which one.

Pritchett also talks about the danger of simply trying harder. More effort doesn’t fix a flawed approach. Sometimes the answer is stepping back and changing the way you’re looking at the problem.

That’s a lesson traders can use.

Michael Jordan Didn’t Win Every Time

You’ve probably heard the Michael Jordan story, but it’s worth thinking about from a trading perspective.

Jordan was cut from his high school varsity team. He missed thousands of shots during his career. He lost hundreds of games. He missed game-winning shots.

Those failures became part of what made him successful.

Now think about your last losing trade.

Did you journal it? Did you go back through the chart after the fact? Did you look at the entry, the market conditions and your decision-making?

Or did you close the platform, forget about the trade and move on to the next one?

Jordan studied the tape.

Traders need to study their trades.

Edison’s 10,000 Experiments

Thomas Edison is often credited with saying he had found thousands of ways that didn’t work.

There’s a useful lesson in that for traders.

Every losing trade can be an experiment. Every stopped-out position gives you another piece of information.

Did you chase the entry?

Was your position size too large?

Did you ignore a weakening sector?

Did you move your stop?

Did you hold the position because you were convinced it would come back?

Did you start watching your P&L instead of the chart?

Those questions are far more valuable than simply looking at the account balance and saying, “I lost money.”

The money is gone.

The lesson is still available.

Failing Forward

There’s a concept called “failing forward,” and I think it describes one of the biggest differences between traders who improve and traders who stay stuck.

You take the loss, figure out what happened, make an adjustment and keep going.

My framework for doing that is pretty simple:

1. Journal the loss while it’s fresh.

Write down the setup, your entry, why you took the trade, what you expected and what actually happened. Don’t wait a week until you barely remember the trade.

2. Separate the trade from the outcome.

A well-executed trade can lose money. A terrible trade can make money.

That distinction matters.

You’re building a process around probabilities, not trying to predict every single outcome.

3. Look for patterns.

One losing trade tells you very little.

Twenty trades that show the same mistake tell you something.

Maybe you consistently lose on breakouts when volume is weak. Maybe you enter too early. Maybe you give losing trades too much room because you don’t want to take the loss.

Those are problems you can actually work on.

4. Keep your losses small enough to survive.

Risk management gives you the ability to learn.

A loss that damages your account so badly that you’re forced to stop trading doesn’t leave much room for a lesson. Protecting your capital gives you another opportunity to apply what you learned.

5. Get used to being wrong.

Even very good traders have plenty of losing trades.

You don’t need to win every time. You need an approach where your winners, your losers and your risk all work together over a large enough sample of trades.

That’s the game.

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Pritchett’s idea of pushing beyond your comfort zone is especially relevant to trading.

Trading is uncomfortable because you’re making decisions with incomplete information while putting real money at risk.

There will always be uncertainty.

The goal isn’t to eliminate that feeling. It’s to learn how to operate while it’s there.

The traders who improve don’t panic every time they take a loss. They review it.

They don’t assume every winning trade proves they’re brilliant. They review those too.

Over time, confidence starts coming from something more useful than being right. It comes from knowing you can handle the trade when it goes against you.

The Bottom Line

Failure is part of becoming a better trader.

Every blown stop, chased entry and broken rule gives you something to examine. You paid for that information with real money. Don’t waste it.

Abraham Lincoln is often quoted as saying his concern wasn’t whether someone had failed, but whether they were content with their failure.

That’s the part that matters.

Take the loss. Study it. Figure out what happened. Make the adjustment. Take the next trade with a little more experience than you had before.

You’re going to be wrong again.

That’s okay.

Just make sure you’re getting better at being wrong.

Failure isn’t a detour from the process.

Failure is the process.

In the world of swing trading, these mistakes cost you thousands of dollars in realized losses and missed opportunities every single month.

1. The Inverse Risk-to-Reward Trap

The most common mathematical suicide committed by traders is taking setups where the potential downside outweighs the upside. If you are risking $1,000 to make $500, you have to be right over 67% of the time just to break even.

Swing trading is a game of probabilities. To keep the math in your favor, you should aim for a 3:1 reward-to-risk ratio. By ensuring your profit targets are three times larger than your stop losses, you can be wrong half the time and still see your equity curve move up.

2. Ignoring the “Mean Reversion” Magnet

Many traders lose thousands by chasing; buying a stock that has already moved 10% in two days. Stocks are like rubber bands; the further they stretch from their moving averages, the harder they snap back.

Buying at the top of an extension is a recipe for getting caught in a mean reversion move. Instead of buying the peak, professional swing traders wait for the pullback to a key level of support or a specific moving average, entering when the risk is defined and the “rubber band” is no longer overstretched.

3. The “Gap and Trap”

Gaps are some of the most powerful price action signals, but they are also the most misunderstood. A common mistake is blindly buying every “gap up” at the open. Without understanding the context, whether it’s a breakaway gap or an exhaustion gap, you often end up buying the high of the day right before the “gap fill” begins.

Learning to trade gaps requires patience. You must wait to see if the gap holds its initial range or if it’s a “trap” designed to suck in retail liquidity before reversing.

4. Over-Trading and Under-Planning

If you find yourself entering trades because you’re “bored” or because you feel like the market is moving without you, you aren’t trading, you’re gambling.

The Fix:

• 5:00 a.m. Discipline: Use the quiet hours before the market opens to scan your watchlists and set your levels.

• Hard Stops: Never enter a trade without a stop-loss order already sitting in the system.

• The Manifesto: Treat every trade as a line item in a business ledger. If the setup doesn’t meet your strict criteria, the only correct action is to do nothing.

The Bottom Line

Trading isn’t about being “right” on every single ticker; it’s about managing a portfolio of risks. When you stop chasing outliers and start focusing on the math of the 3:1 ratio and the mechanics of swing setups, the “tuition fees” stop, and the profits begin.

Stop donating your hard-earned money to the hedge funds. Tighten your process, respect the mean, and start trading like a professional.

The market doesn’t seem to care much about the continuing conflict in the middle east and the lack of ceasefire - perhaps when Oil get back above $80, it will. For now, we can only trade based on what we know and take the information as it is reflected in the price action.

This triggered a risk-off sell-all environment in which the Nasdaq was down 4.8%, VIX ripped higher, commodities such as Gold and Silver were down, and the long-end of the curve got back above 5%

The current sentiment is rather bearish with earnings season mostly behind us, fresh strikes between Israel and Iran and a concern that higher rates are coming soon.

Health Care has been the strongest momentum story on the RRG for 4 consecutive weeks; the relative strength Momentum is the highest of all 11 sectors and 3 of our 5 setups this week reflect this bias. The major indices are once again sitting at all-time highs as the earnings season comes to a wrap. It seems like no matter what is going on in the world, market keep going higher. There is some rotation happening under the hood (more on this in the Sector Bias analysis section towards the bottom), so its not all sunshine and rainbows. At this point, with the run we’ve had since bottom in April, markets have much more risk to the downside than they do to the upside. That being said, we are the last to be fighting the trend, so we will keep picking our spots and will continue to ride the coat tails of the sectors that are working.

That being said, price action is king, so while we continue to trade with the trend, we are well aware that the markets are overextended here and a pull-back, maybe an aggressive one, could occur at any moment. FWIW, Bitcoin is also up more than 10% over the week. Stick to your game plan and stay focused.
