Sometimes I remember the musty room I had spent months in. Hope was away from me. Beneath the anger and sadness of spending days in rehab, I yearned for a life when I could walk around freely, have conversations with my friends and drink my tea in peace. Great achievements did not bother me much. When ordinary life disappeared, I realised that it, too, is a privilege.

I grew up believing hustle is a norm and so is busyness. I have worn exhaustion like a medal and considered rest to be laziness. But I wake up feeling rested these days, often sleeping more than other members of the family. The shame of not waking up early fades away when I see my husband and my mother-in-law are waiting to have tea with me. Our unremarkable ritual of having tea together and talking about weather, politics and memories satiates me in ways I don’t understand.

Acts of ordinary tenderness by my mother-in-law and my husband continue to surprise me. The way my husband fiercely protects my solitude or my mother-in-law asking me, sometimes for the third time that day, how I am feeling feels like a luxury. It took marriage to teach me that luxury is not about anything fancy. It’s about being looked after without having to earn it.

Grief, however, creeps in. The portrait of my father sitting on the bookshelf reminds me of my younger days. While having deep conversations, I remember how Baba and I used to talk about life. I watch and rewatch movies we watched together.

Perhaps grief is the only force powerful enough to expose the fraud of an exceptional life. In the aftermath of loss, we ache for the warmth of long hugs, for one more ordinary evening with our loved ones, for stories we never grew tired of listening to.

Achievement tells us what society values, but the heart perhaps reveals what it values only when it breaks.

Learning to Inhabit an Ordinary Life

Modern life has taught us how to compete, how to continue our journey of constant becoming. It has taught us endless ways of optimising ourselves, but have we learnt how to dwell in the life we already have?

Some afternoons still bring guilt for wanting to rest. I remind myself that what I’ve done today is enough, and a smaller, older voice still asks if I should be doing something more. That voice belongs to a girl who knew how to chase happiness, photograph it, announce it — and never learned how to simply sit inside an afternoon without first asking if she’d earned it.

Peace still feels unfamiliar some days. After years of waiting for the next emotional earthquake, contentment can feel like a foreign country.

An ordinary life asks us to stop performing for meaning, and that’s what makes it difficult. Perhaps this is why slowness is unsettling. Stillness reveals what we are hiding from.

Maybe it’s time to look at contentment as discipline. Not the discipline of relentlessly chasing goals or waking up at 4:30 in the morning, but the discipline of letting a day be unremarkable and letting that be enough.

It is Thursday evening. My mother-in-law is calling me for tea. I can hear the kettle, and my husband’s voice answering her from the other room. I am waiting to close my laptop and go.

For years, I believed that an extraordinary life is worthy of acceptance and love. Now the real work is learning to believe that an ordinary life was a privilege meant for me all along.

These lines flowed in my journal one morning. I wrote them years before I could understand them.

In my twenties, I was convinced that greatness lived elsewhere - in newsrooms, bylines, applause, recognition. I thought if I was a ‘famous’ journalist, maybe I would finally be seen. Maybe, finally, I would stop living a fragile inner world.

I wonder why I never considered that greatness also lives in the mundane daily lives. We hardly tell stories of a woman who built a peaceful home, the man who shows up for dinner every night or the daughter who learns to live without constantly proving herself. Our stories are filled with people achieving exceptional feats. We talk about the child who tops the board exams, the entrepreneur who earns lakhs before she is thirty, the civil servant who lifted the entire family into a different social class. Every family gathering has its legends. Every newspaper, its heroes.

Our culture is shaped by scarcity and upward mobility. Greatness, hence, has become more than ambition. It has quietly become morality. To be ordinary is to risk invisibility.

But why do we glorify extraordinary lives so much? An award points us toward who matters. A salary tells us who succeeded. A follower count tells us who is visible. Ordinary life offers no such metrics. There is no metric to measure trust, companionship, emotional safety, or laughter over evening tea. Modern society struggles to value what it has no way of quantifying.

The Devotion of Ordinary Afternoons

Perhaps one’s understanding of greatness has always been flawed.

The paintings of Van Gogh move us now, though in his own lifetime he sold almost nothing and died believing himself a failure. What we call genius today was, for him, thousands of solitary afternoons spent painting flowers, wheat fields, ordinary cafes, with no one watching.

We remember Jibanananda Das as one of Bengal’s greatest poets, but he spent much of his life teaching, quietly observing ponds, dusty roads, birds — a private, largely unrecognised man for most of his years.

Neither of them woke up every morning asking how to become exceptional. They woke up answering a calling — a calling to return, again, to the same easel, the same window, the same page. History remembers the masterpieces. The thousands of ordinary afternoons spent making them are easily forgotten.

For years I thought greatness meant escaping the mundane. But exceptionality is not the opposite of ordinariness. Greatness is what sometimes emerges from a life devoted to ordinary acts of devotion.

I didn’t come to believe this gently. It took losing the ordinary altogether to understand what it was worth.

It was never the same story. More often than not, the day drifting into the evening brought me dread. A part of me kept asking if I’d been productive enough — if I’d achieved something remarkable. More often than not, the answer was no. And that no gave birth to an undercurrent of grief I didn’t have a name for: the grief of being too ordinary.

I wonder how many of us quietly carry this grief? What shape does it take in other people’s afternoons? I wonder: why do we fear ordinary? When did ordinary become another word for failure?

The Lie We are Sold

We have inherited a strange dream. Our grandparents knew the terror of scarcity, so they chased stability. Our parents worshipped government jobs, degrees, and respectability as a survival strategy, and somewhere in between we came to believe that life can only gain meaning through remarkability.

We were taught to keep becoming - more productive, more successful, more visible, more extraordinary. We want to reach “ the top, the top, the top” - as if love is waiting at the end of the summit. We hardly know where the finish line is for our achievements.

The fables we grew up with talked about constant reinvention. In our stories, robbers become poets, princes become saints, emperors become philosophers, nobodies become legends. Then we turned the television on, liberalisation brought us new aspirations, the internet widened our horizons. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, the chasing of fame, followers, and virality became normalised.

And yet, beneath all this restless striving lies a quieter, perhaps ancient longing. We yearn to return home to a place where the tea is brewing in the kitchen, where laughter spills across the dinner table, where someone asks us if we have eaten, where an uneventful Tuesday passes without catastrophe.

Perhaps the irony we are handed down is that after generations fought for the privilege of safety and belonging, their children grew up believing that peace is too small a dream.

Ordinary Was Never Safe to Begin With

For most of my childhood, I grappled with searing loneliness. I missed my parents while growing up with my grandparents. When I finally moved in with my parents, it was a turbulent home. I dreaded coming back home. Walking on eggshells was a daily affair. Looking back, I think it was the same story for many of us growing up. Ordinary life was never peaceful to begin with.

While material scarcity was slowly becoming a story of the past in the late nineties, emotional scarcity was rampant. Parents who had survived economic insecurity in their early lives strived hard to pass down the message to their offspring: “You must make a name for yourself in society”

Daughters, however, received a mixed message. They could be ambitious but not intimidating, successful but not selfish, independent yet nurturing— and often, our family’s pride rested on our shoulders.

When we were just little girls, we were asked what we would be. We mostly found answers that would get us appreciation. A teacher, a doctor, an engineer, a writer. A success story. We were never asked what would make us feel happy. We assumed happiness would be handed to us as the fruit of our becoming. Rarely did we dream of extraordinary lives because we were curious. Beneath our aspirations was an unspoken bait that if we achieved enough, we would be admired, respected and loved. Achievement became our cultural language for emotional security.

A peculiar kind of loneliness thrives in the belief that one’s life must justify its own existence.

Beneath our obsession with exception lies an uncomfortable truth — we are rarely afraid of the boredom of ordinary lives. We are afraid because we don’t know how to trust peace. This fear shapes our language. When we want unconditional love, we say, I want to prove myself. When we want to feel safe, we say, I want to be successful. Our ambition is not merely ambition. It is a survival strategy.

For years, I thought the way out of this was to become exceptional. It took me a long time to understand I had the whole thing backwards.

Most of what we are offered are tools. Ways to cope, ways to manage, ways to keep going without breaking. These can help, in small and necessary ways. But they do not change the conditions that created the strain.

A body that learned to stay alert does not stop because it is told to relax. It stops when it no longer needs to stay alert. That shift does not come from effort. It comes from experience. It comes from environments that hold steady, from relationships that do not require constant adjustment, from moments where the body is not rehearsing what might go wrong. From safety that is felt, not just understood.

If the first part of this essay was about recognising the pattern, this one is about what actually begins to change it.

What Coping Can Do and Cannot

We are often told that the answer to our exhaustion is a better toolkit. Mindfulness, grounding, breathing. Structured routines for stability. These can be useful. Research by Matthew Lieberman shows that simply naming an emotion can reduce firing in the amygdala, the brain’s alarm centre. There is something real in the pause.

But these tools do not change the conditions that created the stress. They are bandages, not cures.

If your vigilance developed inside emotional unpredictability, chronic criticism, or relational instability, no amount of deep breathing erases that history. If the threat was persistent, the body’s memory of it is equally stubborn. Coping tools offer short-term relief. They do not undo long-term conditioning.

When exhaustion peaks, people reach for different things. Some like to indulge in sensory pleasures like a favourite meal, a drive, time with a pet. Others dive deep into the crevices of the body in a massage, a nap, an Access Bars session. Some need darkness and silence. Many need to be completely alone, breathing under a tree, away from everyone’s expectations.

The most powerful remedies, though, tend to be relational. Being taken care of. Feeling loved. A conversation with someone who genuinely listens. A hug that asks nothing back.

And for many women, the honest answer is: nothing works. The exhaustion just “goes beneath the next one”, sinking until it finds somewhere to settle, and the only real response is a complete digital detox, total time away, a full stop.

That surrender is where the fixing ends and the being begins. When tools stop working, that is not personal failure. It reflects what they were never built to address. Tools help manage the symptoms of a stressed life. They do not make the world a safer place.

Relational Safety and Co-regulation

Stress research suggests that for women, the path back to a regulated state is rarely walked alone. While fight-or-flight dominates how we talk about stress, the tend-and-befriend model points out that women frequently respond to pressure by moving toward others, not away from them. For many of us, safety is relational. It lives in the presence of another nervous system that is calm, attuned, and steady.

The body does not relax because we decide it is safe. It relaxes because we have experienced safety repeatedly. That is co-regulation. When someone meets us with real attention or a non-judgmental embrace, the internal alarms begin to quiet.

For many women, that kind of safety is not guaranteed. In the survey, 52.6% said they mostly feel emotionally safe in their relationships. 36.8% said they do not. When safety is uncertain, the system stays alert and that alertness costs energy every single day.

Romantic stability matters, but there is something specific about female friendships and women’s circles that goes beyond partnership. I have been part of a women’s circle for almost a decade. Its effect on my healing has been real. Being in that space over several years contributed to both intellectual richness and confidence in my work in ways I did not expect.

Historically and biologically, women have used circles and close friendships to mirror each other’s worth and reality. These spaces offer a particular kind of resonance — the nervous system can drop its guard without having to explain why. This mirroring is, in a biological sense, a homecoming. When women gather to tend and befriend, they create a container that can hold the weight of individual exhaustion. The collective silence of a group, the active appreciation of a peer, the joy of sipping tea together and spending a languorous afternoon in deep conversations, these bonds activate oxytocin, which directly buffers the stress response. It is communal. It tells the nervous system it no longer has to hide.

When this is paired with genuine safety at home, the baseline starts to shift. I have seen this firsthand. Entering a truly safe romantic relationship changed me. As the emotional unpredictability of the past receded, my anxiety dropped. That extended into my family life, too. As those relationships improved and I stopped bracing for the next conflict, the mind fog began to lift. I was no longer spending energy managing the atmosphere around me. That freed up fuel for my own life.

The Body in Motion

Movement is often treated as a task — something to get through, often to change appearance. But it also acts directly on the nervous system. When we are locked in hyper-vigilance or the heavy stillness of shutdown, rhythmic physical activity functions as a bridge back to the present.

Yoga, walking, and dancing are not just exercises. They are biological signals that help the body shift out of prolonged stress and back into something more like flow.

Large-muscle-group activation stimulates the release of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. Research shows that moderate movement increases parasympathetic activity, which supports recovery and rest. Studies suggest that yoga, specifically, can lower cortisol levels and strengthen communication between the brain and body. It teaches the mind that inhabiting the body does not have to mean bracing for impact.

Rhythmic activities add something more to this. Rhythm regulates heart rate and breathing without requiring conscious effort. When we move collectively, dancing in a room of people or walking in sync with a friend, we tap into shared regulation. Co-regulation, but in motion.

The Medicine of Working Hands

Long before anyone had language for the nervous system, women held their own tools of regulation in their hands.

Across cultures and centuries: cooking, weaving, embroidering, throwing clay, tending to a shared meal. These were not merely practical tasks. They were old, practised ceremonies of settling the self.

Modern research now echoes this. Craft historian Glenn Adamson has written about how thinking is shaped through making. A study by Girija Kaimal in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found that art-making reduces cortisol regardless of skill level. Art therapist Cathy Malchiodi describes creative work as a sensorimotor process that helps the body work through what words cannot reach.

When we engage in these activities, attention narrows and steadies. The mind stops scanning for threats because it is occupied by the texture of yarn or the weight of clay. This is the “flow state”.

The same logic extends to collective ritual: shared singing, synchronised dance, the resonance of storytelling together.

Healing is not only a cognitive shift. It is rhythmic. It is embodied. It is the medicine of the working hand, and the quiet, steady pulse of making something, telling the body it is finally time to come home.

Where This Meets the Body

The nervous system framework helps explain exhaustion, but it is not the only lens. Low energy is a complex messenger. It can also reflect physical or psychological conditions that need their own specific attention.

Symptoms of major depressive disorder, hypothyroidism, iron deficiency anaemia, PCOS, and sleep disorders can all mirror the heavy stillness of shutdown. Executive dysfunction and sensory overwhelm from ADHD can create cycles of burnout that look and feel like a broken circuit.

Persistent or impairing symptoms need a medical or mental health evaluation. This essay explores patterns. It is not a diagnosis. Understanding the difference between a survival response and a medical condition is an act of self-advocacy.

The Question Beneath the Exhaustion

What this exhaustion points to is a quiet but real struggle. The world tends to misread it. Laziness. Lack of interest. Procrastination. Women describe being labelled rude, dismissive, disinterested — or told they are just a bad sleeper, or a tired mother, or cycling through PMS.

Over time, a split often develops. The woman who keeps showing up. And the one who is quietly withdrawing. A life that moves forward on the surface while something underneath slows, dims, and conserves.

Even after resting all day, the energy does not come back, because this is not just tiredness. As one woman put it, it is a genuine overload of a lot of things. The weight of caretaking. Financial pressure. The heavy stillness of a body that has chosen to stay in bed just to survive the day.

When women are asked what support they actually want, they do not ask for productivity tools. They ask for cycle-friendly work structures, financially stable and emotionally available partners, and families who understand mental health. They ask for a good ear and soft, gentle love.

Low energy, from this angle, is not failure. It is a signal. It is a body asking a simple question: Can I finally stop bracing?

Because rest is not just a personal practice, it is shaped by the environments we live in, the relationships we move through, and the expectations we carry. Some bodies are asked to stay alert longer than others. Some lives require more adjustment, more anticipation, more holding.

Rest is not equally available.

That is probably where this conversation needs to go next, not just toward regulation, but toward the reality of who gets to rest, who does not, and why.

They call it laziness or something that needs fixing. We wonder if it’s just a phase or hormones.

The body, though, uses none of these words. The body is verbose in a different way. The nervous system stays on alert for too long. And then, without warning, it shuts down.

Most of us don’t recognise it when it happens, and this is where our exploration begins.

What If This Isn’t Low Energy, But Labour?

Stillness is often read as failure. When energy wanes, the labels arrive quickly — lack of discipline, distraction, inconsistency, mood swing. We wear our armour tighter and carry forward with clenched jaws, planners and caffeine. More effort. More force.

I tried to outwork it. Cigarettes between tasks. Coffee that stayed too long in the system. Evening without screens, Early dinner. New diets, Walks in the evening.New workout routines. All in the hope that something would lift. It didn’t.

The problem was not in the habits. It was in the body that had been holding something for too long.

Trauma psychology offers a different explanation. I found out that the long shadow of hyper-vigilance looms over the nervous system. This is a survival adaptation born in unpredictable environments.

When the world feels unsafe, the sympathetic nervous system mobilises us for battle. We become hyper-aware and disregard hunger, fatigue, and pain just to stay standing.

When surveyed, 15% women reported an inability to feel hunger or satiation.

When asked about their tiredness, the experiences women shared reveal something far more complex than a simple need for rest.

Across responses, a few patterns appeared repeatedly. For many, it showed up as mental overload, a mind with too many open windows and no way to close them. For others, it felt like something harder to name, a presence that lingers just beyond words.

Some described a restless tension, a body that feels on edge, as if it needs to move but has nowhere to go. Others spoke of emotional numbness, where feeling itself seems muted or distant.

There were also experiences at the edges. A few described a physical heaviness, as if moving through resistance, while others felt irritable and overstimulated, like a system that cannot fully settle.

When women reflect on what their bodies are most tired of, the answers are rarely physical. They are tired of the thoughts that run constantly and the emotional strain that keeps them on edge. They are exhausted by carrying the mental load, by being both provider and nurturer, and by the ongoing effort of making decisions.

Some feel worn down by conflict, by interactions with people, and by the repetitive loop of thinking about the past. For some, the exhaustion runs so deep that they describe it as being tired of living.

Alongside this, women also describe specific everyday drains. For some, even physical movement, especially when it requires stepping outdoors, feels difficult. Any form of unpleasant interaction adds to the strain.

Mental overload from too many inputs or decisions builds quickly. There is also fatigue from feeling the need to always be available to others, and for some, a strong emotional dependence on having their partner around, which can further intensify the sense of depletion.

The Quiet Work of Staying on Guard

There is a specific, quiet intelligence in a nervous system that has learned to read the air. It develops out of necessity. The eyes become experts at decoding the twitch of a lip or the sudden, sharp cooling of a gaze. Nothing misses their gaze, a tightened jaw, a change in tone, a sudden withdrawal in someone’s expression.

People who live in this state of heightened awareness don’t just enter a room; they map it. They pick up cues others overlook, anticipate the storm clouds before the first drop of rain falls, and mentally rehearse a dozen responses or exits from a conversation before it even begins.

For me, this showed up in small, repetitive ways. I would spend hours reading the tone of a single email, searching for a hidden “no.” I would overanalyse punctuation and wording, trying to predict rejection before it was stated.

My mind stayed focused on anticipating what could go wrong. Even in calm moments, I felt on edge, waiting for something to shift. I believed that if I could see it coming, I could handle it better.

These are not merely personality traits. They are learned responses shaped by environments where safety felt uncertain. Staying alert to small emotional shifts becomes a way to stay prepared and avoid being caught off guard.

But this mastery comes with a steep tax. I was often the most prepared person in the room, and also the most exhausted. The constant undercurrent of alertness and terror left no room for anything else to grow.

50% of women surveyed reported that constant self-monitoring feels familiar. Low energy can be the physical result of constant emotional vigilance.

However, hypervigilance is a learned survival response. It is not a failure that can be fixed with more discipline or a stricter routine. It is the body trying to protect you, even when it uses up a great deal of energy.

When the System Can No Longer Hold

No nervous system, no matter how resilient, can remain on alert indefinitely.

For a while, it manages. It sharpens. It over-functions. And then, slowly, it begins to give way. The pattern is often the same. Anxiety. A stretch of Over-functioning. A quiet, accumulating strain. And then, a quiet descent into Numbness.

For many women, there is a moment just before this shift. A sudden rush of urgency. Thoughts begin to speed up. There is an internal pressure to resolve everything at once, as if the system is trying, one last time, to regain control before it can no longer sustain itself.

I recognise this rhythm intimately. For years, my mind became most active just before sleep. As the world quieted, something in me would surge. Unfinished tasks, unresolved thoughts, small details that suddenly felt urgent. It felt like the body, sensing the end of the day, was trying to process everything it had been holding back.

What followed was not relief, but a kind of collapse. Mornings arrived heavy. Movement felt delayed, as if the body needed convincing. Even simple tasks carried weight.

Others describe it in similar ways. A sense of being frozen but awake at the same time. Knowing what to do, but being unable to move toward it. The mind fogs, the body slows, and a quiet distance settles between the self and the world. Something remains beneath the surface, but there is not enough energy to reach it.

In trauma research, this shift is understood as a movement between states—from heightened alertness to shutdown, from mobilisation to conservation. When the system reaches its limit, it does not fail. It protects.

Shutdown is not laziness. It is protection.

Women’s Bodies Move in Rhythms

Another layer adds to this pattern of exhaustion and alertness. Women’s bodies do not function in a constant, linear way, yet much of the modern world expects steady productivity every day.

We are told to show up with the same high-voltage energy every Monday morning, yet our internal landscape is governed by a shifting tide. Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle profoundly influence our emotional sensitivity, our cognitive focus, and our very capacity to tolerate stress.

Research summarised by Louann Brizendine in The Female Brain, along with studies published in Psychoneuroendocrinology, shows that changes in estrogen and progesterone influence how the brain processes stress and emotion.

For many women, stress sensitivity increases during the luteal phase of the cycle. A task that feels manageable earlier in the cycle can feel significantly more difficult later on. Our emotional processing is not a static line. It is a wave.

Several women describe how this creates a quiet but ongoing strain. One shared how difficult it is to keep going when her body is asking for rest or withdrawal, yet she still has to care for her child and show up at work with a composed, professional front. She described it as living a kind of double life, one that is deeply tiring.

Another spoke about the frustration of being expected to perform at work during the luteal phase, even when her body is clearly not aligned with those demands.

This cyclical physiology interacts closely with nervous system patterns. When a body already primed for hyper-vigilance meets a hormonal dip in stress tolerance, the system reaches its breaking point much faster.

The survey data reflects this reality with striking clarity. When asked if their capacity changes noticeably across days, weeks, or cycles, a staggering 75% said yes.

This changes how we interpret low energy. It is not an inconsistency. It is physiology under pressure.

The Work No One Sees

Keeping the Peace

There is a form of exhaustion that does not show up on a pedometer or a timesheet. It comes from managing not just tasks, but the emotional environment around you.

For many women, low energy is the result of years of sustained emotional effort, often without rest. This is the work of keeping the peace, and it is a job that never truly offers a day off.

At the centre of this is emotional labour, a term introduced by sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild. Her research describes how people, often women, are expected to manage their own emotions and expressions in order to influence the feelings of others.

This is the smile through the tension that holds a family dinner together. It is the careful modulation of voice to de-escalate a partner’s stress and the internal suppression of one’s own needs to ensure the collective environment remains stable.

This labour is fueled by people pleasing and anticipation. These are not just nice personality traits. They require continuous attention and energy.

To be a people pleaser is to be a full-time emotional detective. It is the work of solving problems before they even manifest by anticipating a child’s meltdown, a boss’s frustration, or a family member’s passive aggression.

When this becomes a constant pattern, the mind stays active even during periods of rest.

You are mentally rehearsing conversations to avoid conflict, editing your emails to sound softer, and tracking the invisible emotional bank accounts of everyone around you.

This is why a day without visible activity can still feel exhausting. Your body may have been still, but your nervous system was working overtime.

One of the challenges with this kind of work is that it often goes unnoticed. When things run smoothly, the effort behind it is not acknowledged. If a conflict is avoided, no one sees the hours of mental gymnastics required to bypass it.

Until we name this work, we will continue to misdiagnose the resulting fatigue as a personal defect rather than a response to the staggering weight of carrying everyone else’s peace on your own shoulders.

The Scroll That Never Ends

In moments when energy drops, many of us turn to our screens. Scrolling can feel like a way to switch off, a break from the demands of the day. However, research suggests otherwise.

Survey data shows a clear pattern in the emotional state that often comes before doomscrolling. A significant 35% of women report a spike in anxiety, while 30% experience conflict or tension. Others describe the heavy weight of sadness (35%), pressure (25%), and shame (15%)

This means that by the time the phone is picked up, the nervous system is already strained. The pull toward scrolling is not about entertainment. It is often an attempt to find relief. But digital spaces do not provide the kind of rest the body is looking for.

One reason is constant attention switching. Our attention spans on digital screens have plummeted. We are no longer focusing. We are fractured. Each new post, headline, or video requires a micro-adjustment of the brain to process new context, new tones, and new emotional triggers.

This is made more intense by comparison. Studies link social media use with lower well-being. Even if we are not consciously aware of it, the brain is performing a non-stop social audit. While scrolling, the mind compares personal experiences with curated content, looking for cues of belonging, and inadvertently measuring our own worth against a digital yardstick that does not exist.

This process is a form of constant evaluation. The nervous system, which spent the day scanning the room for emotional safety, is now scanning the screen for social safety. It is looking for validation in likes, monitoring for exclusion, and processing a relentless tide of information that requires a reaction.

Scrolling is not true rest. It is low-grade vigilance. The mind remains active, even if the body is still. When we finally put the phone down, we often feel more depleted than when we started because we have replaced deep, restorative silence with a shallow, buzzing noise that never allows the system to fully drop into a state of safety.

This Did Not Begin Here

The narrative of “low energy” often ends in shame, but research points elsewhere. Studies on adverse childhood experiences, led by Nadine Burke Harris, reveal how chronic stress in our formative years can physically reshape our long-term physiology. When a child must navigate an environment that is unpredictable or emotionally charged, the brain does not develop for play; it develops for protection.

This early survival mode often manifests as a heavy, internal armour. We learn to hold a guard or build boundaries that once made sense as a way to feel secure, but maintaining this defensive posture is exhausting.

It requires a constant expenditure of energy to keep the walls up, which often comes at the cost of healthy, fluid relationships. When we are always braced for impact, it is difficult to experience the true intimacy and vulnerability that allow for co-regulation.

We become trapped in a cycle of isolation, where the very boundaries meant to protect us eventually become the bars that keep us from the rest we need.

Healing begins by slowly teaching the body that the current environment is safe, allowing the veteran protector to finally, gently, lay down its arms and trade the armour for connection.

The Debt We Cannot Repay

When someone lives in a constant state of bracing, life is not merely lived; it is survived. This is not a choice or a personality trait. It is a physiological debt that compounds over time.

The responses I collected from women were not just reflections. They were eulogies for the lives they might have led if they had not been so busy holding up the sky.

This existence exacts a staggering toll on our inner calm and our health. It has robbed us of our ease.

For some, the price was paid in cold, hard numbers—retirement funds gone, no safety net, and leaving jobs because the exhaustion was simply too much. For others, it appears as a gradual change in the self, reduced patience, lower confidence, and less willingness to take risks because there is no fuel left for bravery.

We have paid with our potential. Many of us see ourselves as achievers who can no longer touch what we are truly capable of because we are too busy managing the buzzing in our heads and the leaden weight in our limbs.

It has cost us our connections, leaving us with friends we barely keep in touch with and a social circle that has shrunk to the size of a survival bunker.

These experiences are often labelled as depression or chronic anxiety. People describe feeling constantly tense, unable to fully relax. Over time, this affects growth, enjoyment, and overall mental well-being.

Many feel overwhelmed by their thoughts and the ongoing mental load, and some express a deep fatigue with living this way.

This is the quiet tragedy of the guardian’s tax. We have kept everyone else safe, but in the process, we have lost the version of ourselves that knew how to be free.

And yet, most of us are still asking the wrong question. Not what is this costing me, but how do I fix myself? That is where we need to begin again.

We occupy a cultural moment where connection is abundant, but safety is vanishing. Modern romance often feels like a series of accelerations followed by abrupt exits. We have become experts at the spark but novices at the steady flame. Beneath the noise of pursuit, there is a collective fatigue with intensity that leaves us hollowed out. What many of us are longing for is not stimulation, but rest. Secure love is not an abstract ideal; it is the bodily realisation that the person beside you is a harbour, not a storm.

The transition from the haunting of the past to the presence of the now is a gradual deepening of the silence. And maybe the clearest proof that I am no longer in limerence is this quiet fullness I now feel. With my current partner, S, love does not whirl me into chaos; it settles me. My nervous system softens in his presence.

At first, this softness was disorienting. I was so used to the high-voltage electricity of anxious attachment that the low hum of safety felt almost hollow. But beneath that unfamiliar quiet was steadiness. For the first time, nothing was collapsing. I am learning that the absence of anxiety is not the absence of love; it is the presence of security.

What Secure Love Actually Is (and Why It Feels Unfamiliar)

Secure love is not the absence of passion but the presence of a functional safety net. In the language of attachment, this is co-regulation: two nervous systems acting as a stabilising pair through consistent presence. Stan Tatkin describes this as a “pro-relationship” stance, where both partners prioritise the health of the bond in order to protect their individual well-being.

With S, the connection does not require the erasure of the self. Our relationship mirrors Robert Sternberg’s theory of love, which suggests that intimacy and commitment are the pillars that allow passion to mature rather than burn out. I no longer feel compelled to choose between closeness and autonomy.

This is what I never knew to look for: a connection that does not demand shrinking, chasing, or surviving. A love that does not flare and vanish, but glows. Sometimes it feels unfamiliar precisely because it lacks the high of the anxious–avoidant trap. Secure love allows silence without scanning, difference without threat, and closeness without collapse. It offers sturdy ground rather than spectacle.

When Safety Arrives, Old Grief Surfaces

Safety often invites the body to finally speak its oldest truths. We imagine that entering a secure relationship will close the chapter on pain, but the opposite is often true. When the environment becomes genuinely safe, the nervous system releases what it has long held in storage.

The more love I receive from S, the more unloved parts of me appear. Not as hunger, but as presence. In the past, my energy was consumed by survival, leaving no room for grief. Now, in the stillness his presence provides, the architecture of my childhood neglect becomes visible. I feel grief for having been emotionally starved by my primary caregiver, and it is difficult to know how to tend to that part.

Judith Herman describes this as reconstruction: healing that requires mourning what was never received. This grief is not a sign of relational failure. It is evidence that the nervous system is no longer braced for danger. When the system rests, the unloved parts finally feel safe enough to speak. At the same time, S’s love brings calm. My nervous system collapses into relief.

There is grace in grieving the child you were while being held by the partner you have. Secure love does not erase the past. It provides the ground required to finally stand still and weep for it.

Secure Love in Action: Conversations That Don’t Destroy

In earlier relationships, even the thought of endings triggered panic. With S, a conversation early on moved calmly into our emotional histories and fears. We spoke about wanting the relationship to last, and about our wish that, even if it did not, it would remain an asset to our lives. We agreed that if we ever parted, it would be with care. I felt no collapse. Only gratitude that we could hold such hard truths with grace.

This is secure love in action: acknowledging impermanence without abandonment. We are not performing or reassuring. We are examining the architecture of the bond together. Stability emerges not from promises that nothing will change, but from confidence in how change will be met.

This dignity extends to where our worldviews diverge. In the past, this gap would have felt like a fault line requiring one of us to bend to ensure safety. Now, we discuss our viewpoints without the need to convert, seeking only to map the landscape of the other.

When the nervous system is no longer under threat, a partner’s “otherness” stops being a danger and becomes an asset. We are two distinct islands connected by a bridge of mutual respect, built on the truth of who we are rather than who we want the other to be

.Being Met Without Being Rescued

One of the most profound shifts in secure love is learning the difference between being rescued and being met. In the past, sharing pain often carried a hidden plea for someone to fix my life. Recently, I spoke to S about my family dysfunction, my stress and fear. He listened, and we discussed, and from that discussion clarity arrived.

For the very first time, I could share about this without crying, and it was received maturely without judgment. I felt supported. This is the neurobiology of a secure base in real-time. Because S did not panic or try to over-function on my behalf, my own nervous system stayed within its window of tolerance. He held space to help process the data of my life rather than a crutch to replace my own strength. In this space, clarity arrived not as a gift from him, but as a byproduct of the safety he provided.

When we are met with a steady presence, our executive functioning stays online. We are no longer drowning in the amygdala’s alarm; we are thinking. This is the quiet dignity of secure attachment: it restores the agency that trauma and anxious longing once stole. I am learning that I do not need a saviour to pull me out of the fire; I need a partner who can stand near the heat with me until I find my own way through. To be truly seen in one’s struggle, without the partner flinching or taking over, is perhaps the highest form of respect love can offer.

Mutual Vulnerability Without Collapse

The transition into secure attachment is rarely a sudden leap; it is a series of small, honest exchanges in which the urge to perform is replaced by the courage to be seen. In one of our quiet moments, I told him my fear too, the quiet, trembling one I usually hide beneath composure and intellect. I told him I was scared that one day this connection might dull, that routine might replace desire, that I might become less interesting, less beautiful, less wanted.

Beneath those words lived the same wound his own questions occasionally carried: Will you still choose me when the novelty fades? In the past, such a confession would have been a trap, a bid for reassurance that no one can truly guarantee. But here, the energy was different. Instead of dismissing it or rushing to fix it, he listened. He held the truth of it gently.

There was no winner or pursuer, no imbalance. There was only honesty. This is the hallmark of what researchers call earned secure attachment.

In Sternberg’s framework, commitment is not certainty but choice in the presence of doubt. By sitting with fear rather than erasing it, we transformed a potential rupture into intimacy. Safety emerged not from guarantees, but from knowing that fear itself could be spoken without destroying the bond. For the first time, vulnerability felt like a bridge rather than a debt.

From Hunger to Preference

This shift from the frantic energy of the past to the steadiness of the present has fundamentally altered the nature of my desire. Before I started talking with S, I used to feel this craving for someone to be with me, for someone to love me. Slowly, that went away; this was the dissolution of attachment hunger, a primitive form of craving that views the other as a source of survival rather than a person.

The transition into secure love means moving from survival bonding to preference. Not because I stopped wanting connection, but because I stopped needing someone to fill a wound. In clinical terms, this represents a move from the dopamine-driven “reward seeking” of insecure attachment to the oxytocin-rich “calm and connect” system. There is a profound difference between “hold me because I’m empty” and “be near me because it feels good to share space.”

When the nervous system is regulated, we no longer look for a partner to provide the missing pieces of our own autonomy or to act as an external stabiliser for a chaotic inner world. We look for a witness.

Secure Love as Architecture

Moving beyond the era of craving marks a fundamental transformation in how I occupy my own life. This evolution from survival to choice is more than a change in mindset; it is a total renovation of my internal landscape. While I was working on this trilogy, I dreamt of a massive marble sculpture, two hands clasped together, luminous and unbroken, standing in the middle of an open lawn. An old lover from my past, a man who once symbolised stability and creative structure, was sculpting it with quiet devotion. Four pillars rose around the sculpture, and a shed was being built above it, as if my psyche were constructing a sanctuary for a new kind of bond.

In Jungian language, these images were about my inner masculine finally rebuilding the architecture of love inside me. Carl Jung viewed the animus, the inner masculine, as the psychic force responsible for discernment, structure, and the containment of emotional life. For years, my inner architecture had been a site of ruin or frantic, temporary shelters built in the heat of limerence. But this dream revealed permanent labour. The four pillars and the rising roof suggested the creation of a temenos, a sacred, protected space where the heart is no longer exposed to the elements of abandonment or neglect.

The dream felt like a message: that I am no longer driven by hunger, fantasy, or the frantic chemistry of limerence. Something steadier is taking shape, a template rooted not in longing, but in mutuality, protection, and the freedom to stay myself. In this new sanctuary, the masculine principle is no longer a ghost to be chased or a rescuer to be summoned; it is an internal craftsman, providing the stability required for the feminine spirit to rest and create. And perhaps this is where the real story of love begins: not in the spark, but in the slow construction of a bond that is safe enough to hold the heart without swallowing it.

Secure Love Is the Work of Our Time

Our cultural obsession with sparks often distracts us from the quieter power of the glow. We live in a moment that prizes acceleration, novelty, and intensity, while leaving little room for the slow conditions that allow safety to take root. Secure love matters now because it counters a world that repeatedly confuses stimulation with depth.

As Judith Herman famously observed, recovery can take place only within the context of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation. Healing is not a solitary act of will, but a collaborative architecture. When a bond is organised around steadiness rather than volatility, the nervous system is given the safety it requires to relinquish its ancient defences and relearn trust.

Secure love is not passive, sentimental, or dull. It is a disciplined relational practice. It teaches the body the difference between intensity and intimacy, between hunger and nourishment, and between longing as survival and connection as choice. In a culture structured around rupture, secure love restores the capacity to stay with oneself, with another, and with life as it unfolds.

Clarity arrived early. I could see the fractures, the misalignments, the inevitability of the end. But clarity did not bring release. My mind understood before my body did. Attention kept circling what was already over, as if repetition might soften the blow or rewrite the ending. At the time, I took this as a weakness. Only years later did I understand it as unfinished cathexis, emotional energy still lodged in a place it had not yet learned to leave.

If limerence is the fevered dream of a future that has not yet arrived, this stubborn longing is the ghost of a past that refuses to stay buried. We often mistake the persistence of an echo for the presence of a voice.

I lived inside the paradox of the known end. I could articulate every reason we were a ruin, yet my pulse still quickened at the sight of the street we once walked together. I stood in a graveyard, fully aware of the burials, yet waiting for the dead to speak. And so the question surfaced, quiet but relentless: what keeps wanting alive after love has already failed?

In the language of the mind, cathexis is the invisible tethering of our vital energy to another. It is the charge we place upon a person, imbuing them with a gravity they did not earn. Sigmund Freud described this as Besetzung, an occupation. Our emotional resources move out of our own centre and take up residence elsewhere.

This is why the end of a relationship feels like a literal diminishment of the self. You are not just missing a partner. You are missing the parts of your own spirit still lodged in the boundaries of their life. You are a power source still trying to light up a house that has already been demolished.

Cathexis and Limerence: Similar Intensity, Different Engines

We must distinguish this weight from the fever of limerence. While they share an overwhelming intensity, they run on different engines. As Dorothy Tennov observed, limerence is intensified by uncertainty and doubt. It is a future-oriented hunger, a creature of hope that requires the oxygen of ambiguity to survive.

Cathexis, by contrast, is a binding of the past. It is not fueled by what might come but by the gravity of what has already been. Freud noted in Mourning and Melancholia that object-cathexis proves to have a great tenacity. It remains even when every door has been slammed shut, and the ambiguity has vanished. Where limerence is a storm of anticipation, cathexis is the stubborn residue of an old investment. Limerence is a dream we chase, whereas cathexis is a part of ourselves we have not yet brought home.

Negative Cathexis: Wanting Him Back After It Was Already Over

I was an emotionally needy child long before I became an emotionally invested woman. The roots of my longing were established in the quiet soil of early emotional lack, creating a hunger that predated the romantic relationships in my life. This is the blueprint of an anxious attachment style, a script written in a household where emotional rejection was the very air I breathed. For those of us raised in such shadows, being unwanted does not feel like an anomaly; it feels like home.

When a masculine presence entered my life, it answered something unfinished. It was not just A that I was seeing. It was the silhouette of a resolution I had been seeking since the beginning. We are biologically pulled toward what is familiar, even when the familiar is a source of anguish. My brain interpreted the scenario of seeking someone who could not love me back as normal, acting out a history of rejection because it was the only language of connection I knew. I did not yet know that the opposite of longing is not indifference, but safety.

Once attached, my attention belonged to him almost entirely. Without deciding to, I slid into the role of caretaker. I became the curator of his moods and the architect of his comfort. My energy was no longer my own. It had been exported and settled in the territory of his needs.

When the relationship ended, the rupture felt like an amputation. Yet I still wanted him back. Not because the bond was healthy or sustaining, but because my emotional energy had nowhere else to go. It was a phantom limb of the spirit. My mind accepted the ending long before my body did. I could list his failures and our incompatibilities, but the physical ache remained indifferent to facts. I wanted him back even when I knew, clearly, that the relationship could not sustain me.

Helen Fisher’s research on romantic rejection helps explain this agony. Neural regions associated with physical pain and craving remain active long after the beloved has gone. Wanting him back did not mean he was right for me. It meant my emotional energy had not yet learned how to leave. This is the weight of negative cathexis: a stubborn investment in a loss.

In the year after A, the relief was gone, leaving only the sickness. The fever of the relationship had broken, but the psychic body was still convinced it was starving. I was not mourning a future. I was struggling to reclaim a self that was still stationed at a dead address.

Why Wanting Persists: Attachment, Hope, and the Nervous System

Wanting, in this light, is not a moral failure or a lapse in discernment. It is a nervous system doing what it learned to do long before language intervened.

John Bowlby wrote that

“the propensity to make strong emotional bonds is a basic component of human nature.”

When those bonds are threatened, the system protests.

For those shaped by anxious attachment, separation does not register as a clean ending. It registers as danger. Mary Ainsworth observed that anxiously attached individuals intensify proximity-seeking under threat, amplifying longing rather than relinquishing it. Wanting, then, is not choice. It is reflex. The body reaches for what once promised regulation, even when the mind knows that promise was broken.

Letting go completely felt terrifying. Not because the relationship was good, but because absence itself felt unstructured and unsafe. Known pain felt preferable to the blankness of loss. Wanting allowed me to postpone my life, to remain oriented toward something familiar rather than face the task of beginning again.

Hope, in this state, did not feel like optimism. It felt compulsory. It was a low-grade insistence that something must still be possible, because without that insistence, the system would collapse into free fall. Allan Schore’s work on attachment and affect regulation helps explain this persistence. The early nervous system learns how to stabilise itself through connection. When connection is threatened, it does not seek truth. It seeks relief.

Wanting persists not because love is alive, but because the body is still trying to survive its absence.

The Cost of Wanting: How Over-Cathexis Freezes Life

When emotional energy is held captive by a ghost, the present becomes static. During that period, my life came to a standstill. The routines that once anchored me, the disciplines that kept me tethered, fell away. My fitness journey disappeared. Enthusiasm drained out of everything, leaving a hollow space where my vitality used to be.

This is the paralysis of over-cathexis. According to Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, this type of mental looping, or rumination, acts as a corrosive force. She noted that rumination amplifies distress and interferes with effective problem-solving. My mind was not seeking a way forward. It was trapped in a repetitive circuit, pouring resources into a void. My energy was not scattered. It was concentrated entirely in the absence.

From the perspective of Polyvagal Theory, this state mirrors the dorsal vagal “freeze” response. When the nervous system cannot find safety through connection or escape, it may shut down to preserve what little remains. My sense of self diminished until it felt almost nonexistent. I was no longer the protagonist of my own story; I was merely the site where a memory was being housed.

Bessel Van Der Kolk observes this loss of agency in his work on the enduring impact of emotional rupture.

"Trauma robs you of the feeling that you are in charge of yourself."

In the grip of this unwanted wanting, I had become a passenger in my own days.

How Cathexis Withdraws (And Why It Takes Time)

You cannot think your way out of an occupation. Decathexis is a slow, cellular migration of the self back to the self. Freud understood that mourning is not merely a feeling but a labour, a task where the psyche systematically detaches every thread of energy from the lost object. It cannot be rushed.

What finally loosened the bond was not insight or closure. It was exhaustion. The system grew tired of fueling a void. I redirected my energy toward work and fitness, investing in the strength of my own body and the clarity of my own output.

Judith Herman observed that recovery occurs only within the context of relationships. For me, the first relationship to repair was with my own autonomy. Slowly, my life force returned. Not dramatically. Quietly. As energy relocated, the ghost lost its gravity.

What I did not know then was that this return of energy was not an ending, but a preparation. When cathexis finally comes home, it does not remain idle for long. It begins to seek a different quality of bond, one that does not require occupation or rescue. A form of love where energy can move freely without abandoning the self. I would only recognise this later, when wanting no longer felt like hunger, and presence no longer required pursuit.

When cathexis withdrew, it did not leave a void. It left room. Energy returned to the neglected corners of my life. My work came back online. My body strengthened. Writing returned. What felt like loss was, in fact, reclamation.

D. W. Winnicott wrote that the capacity to be alone is a sign of emotional maturity. In this space, solitude became sweet again because I was no longer sharing it with a ghost. By distributing my energy investment across a wider life, I became less vulnerable to the rupture of any single bond. Life regained its texture not because the wanting was finally satisfied, but because the energy was finally home.

Only much later did I realise that this redistribution was teaching me how to love without disappearing, how to stay intact while staying connected, a skill I had never learned in intensity.

Secure Cathexis in the Present

After the ghosts and the fevers, there is a different kind of investment, one that does not announce itself with urgency or intensity. This is not the end of wanting, but the beginning of secure love, a form of attachment that rests rather than reaches. In my life with my current partner, S, the energy I give is no longer an occupation or a desperate tether. It is a proportionate exchange. When cathexis is proportionate, my body experiences safety. Wanting exists without urgency.

Stan Tatkin, in his work on secure-functioning relationships, suggests that partners must become a “pro-relationship” team. This is the neurobiology of co-regulation. Two nervous systems working in tandem to lower the baseline of stress.

In the beginning, calm felt unfamiliar, even a little empty. After years of equating intensity with importance, the absence of a “fever” sometimes felt a little off. But underneath that quiet is steadiness. Nothing collapses. There is no desperate reaching into the dark because the presence is already there, accounted for and reliable.

In this light, cathexis is not a loss of the self. It is a shared investment in a secure base.

Wanting Is Not the Enemy

Looking back, I no longer see a woman of weak will or a lapse in judgment. I see a nervous system doing exactly what it was wired to do: struggle against a profound interruption. We are often told to “let go” as if it were a simple choice made by the intellect, but the psyche does not work by decree. Wanting was not my failure. It was unfinished cathexis.

Judith Herman wrote that trauma is a disorder of connection. When a connection is severed violently, the energy invested in it does not evaporate. It lingers, looking for a bridge. We must learn to forgive the body for its memory. The persistence of an echo is not a sign of the beloved’s worth, but a testament to the depth of our own capacity to give.

Intensity does not equal love. High passion does not guarantee safety. Love matures when energy is no longer an all-consuming fire, but a steady light that illuminates life rather than replacing it. The ghost fades when the house of the self becomes a home again. We are no longer defined by what we lost, but by how we choose to direct the vitality we fought to bring home.

Every attachment now carries a quiet diagnostic question: Does this bond expand my life, or replace it?

What Remains After Intensity Ends

The reclamation of my energy was not an end in itself, but the clearing of a site where something sturdier could finally take root. I had survived both the fevered dream of limerence and the psychic occupation of cathexis. I learned that my vitality was a resource to be protected. I was not a tribute to be paid to longing or an offering left at a dead address. Yet autonomy alone was not the final measure of healing. The true test lay beyond the safety of solitude, in the willingness to reach outward again with a nervous system that could now distinguish rescue from partnership.

What surprises me most is the calm. Even in the sweetness of connection, I remain rooted in myself. In my research. My writing. My friendships. My daily rhythms. The joy feels additive, not consuming. This groundedness made me pause and wonder what has changed?

Somewhere between longing and arrival, two psychological lenses entered my life: limerence and cathexis. Learning their language forced me to confront an aching truth. For years, I mistook hunger for love and intensity for intimacy.

So this is where I begin: a trilogy on the emotional architecture of romantic attachment.

Three essays. One journey. From limerence, to cathexis, to the steady, easeful tenderness of secure love.

Inside the Machinery of Limerence

The serene ease of the present is a gift best understood when measured against the sheer turbulence it has replaced: limerence. This state, so often misread as the fierce, intoxicating prelude to love, is in fact an entirely different structure, one built not for shelter, but for siege. It is the body mistaking a frantic, primal hunger for the slow nourishment of intimacy.

The term was coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov in her seminal work, Love and Limerence (1979). Tennov defined it as an involuntary cognitive and emotional state characterised by obsessive fixation on a specific person, the ‘Limerent Object’, and an aching, desperate thirst for their reciprocation.

Psychologist Albert Wakin later described limerence as an affectional addiction marked by intrusive thoughts, compulsive fantasising, and emotional dependence that fluctuates entirely on perceived signs of interest or rejection.

The defining feature of limerence is not love, but preoccupation. Tennov noted that saying “thinking of you” fails to capture its intensity. “Obsessed comes closer,” she wrote, “but leaves out the ‘aching’.” The mind becomes a closed loop. Thoughts repeat themselves without consent. Daydreams override reality. Even a strong will can only interrupt the cycle temporarily.

The perceptual presence of the Limerent Object in your head defines all other experiences. They become the gravitational centre of your inner cosmos. Every gesture is rehearsed, every future encounter meticulously plotted, in a relentless, futile effort to manage the uncontrollable outcome. Limerence is not mere admiration; it is colonisation of attention.

At the heart of limerence lies the Hope–Dread Cycle. A tiny, favourable sign sends the spirit soaring into rapturous certainty; a delayed text plunges it into the abyss of rejection.

Crucially, for limerence to thrive, uncertainty must remain. Consistent emotional availability extinguishes it.

Wakin observed that the fear of rejection paradoxically intensifies desire. The limerent mind interprets suffering as evidence of significance. The more it hurts, the more meaningful it must be. Pain becomes proof, justifying the depth of the preoccupation.

Limerence demands a deliberate, yet often unconscious, act of distortion. The mind idealises the Limerent Object, polishing them into a flawless icon. Inconveniences become quirks. Emotional unavailability becomes depth. It is a powerful form of self-deception, which is why a knowing voice inside often whispers, “part of me knows the glowing urge is my own construction.”

It is vital to draw the line: limerence is not lust. While physical attraction may be present, the true hunger is existential. It longs for validation, recognition, and confirmation of worth. Sex, within limerence, is often imagined as the ultimate proof of reciprocation, a symbolic signing of the emotional contract.

When limerence reaches full intensity, it eclipses everything else. Other relationships dim. Self-esteem erodes. The inherent doubt makes you forever restless in your own skin. You become a slave to appearance—new clothes, a changed hairstyle, a hyper-receptivity to any ritual that might increase your desirability in the Limerent Object’s eyes. The Limerent Object holds the impossible key to self-worth. This is the cost. Not love, but captivity.

D and the Hunger for Intensity

Limerence is not an abstract theory for me. It is an autobiography written in longing.

I met D during a period of profound dislocation. My inner world was unstable. Family support felt uncertain and far away. He arrived like light in a barren landscape. Soon after, I entered rehab for four months. It was an isolating experience, stripped of familiar anchors. During that time, D became my unintentional Limerent Object. My intrusive thoughts about him became a desperate, shimmering insulation, protecting me from the cold despair of isolation and the terrifying ambiguity of the future. The sheer volume of my mental preoccupation felt like a necessary distraction from the fear.

When I emerged, the foundation of our connection was already built on the shakiest of grounds: distance, projection, and a debilitating fear of rejection. We never had an honest, whole conversation about what the relationship was, yet the intensity felt absolute. I lived between the high of brief attention and the ache of his absence. I idealised him, convinced he represented my only possible future.

The dynamic was painfully familiar. I was constantly shrinking and putting him on a pedestal.

The frantic anticipation before checking my phone was dopamine at work, promising a reward. Nights passed with my mind racing through every possible outcome, fueled by norepinephrine and forced alertness. The constant fear of losing him carried a physical edge. Elevated cortisol, a stress hormone observed in early romantic obsession by researchers like Helen Fisher, explains the shaky, wired tension I lived with for about n year.

When D pulled away emotionally, it felt like withdrawal. Tennov’s words rang true. Limerence is a sickness with intermittent relief. The relief ended, but the deeper pain of abandonment lingered.

The grief came in waves, but the limerence was harder to release. The hope–dread cycle had made a home in my mind, and even knowing the relationship was fundamentally dysfunctional, the addiction to intensity lingered.

Why Limerence Never Feels Accidental

Limerence does not originate in the present. It echoes the past. The intensity we chase in adult relationships is often a nervous system repeating a lesson learned long ago: that attention is scarce, and survival requires vigilance.

John Bowlby’s attachment theory shows that infants are biologically wired to seek closeness with caregivers for survival. When care is steady, a child absorbs a felt sense of safety and worth. When care is inconsistent, unpredictable, or emotionally absent, even without overt harm, the nervous system adapts. This adaptation, often called attachment trauma, forms before language and is shaped less by memory than by bodily expectation. Bowlby observed that when caregivers shift between absence and over-attentiveness, their responses become unreliable, and the child learns that intensifying distress and over-activating the attachment system is often the only path to emotional care. They learn that attention must be secured and separation is dangerous. He showed that early relationships form internal working models, quiet templates that continue to shape how we love.

For me, my mother’s deep inconsistency, along with the loss of my father at sixteen and the emotional landscape that followed, created an enduring longing for attunement.

Mary Ainsworth’s subsequent research identified anxious-preoccupied attachment as a pattern marked by hypervigilance to caregiver availability and heightened distress during separation. The child learns to amplify attachment signals to secure a response. In adulthood, this becomes overthinking relational cues, fear of abandonment, and craving closeness mixed with anxiety.

Limerence thrives in this terrain. Inconsistent availability intensifies desire. Tennov observed that limerence escalates when the Limerent Object is emotionally unavailable.

Secure attachment seeks reciprocity. Anxious attachment becomes magnetised by unpredictability. Limerence is not too much love. It is attachment distress paired with fantasy.

This pattern is a strategy that once worked. Limerence is an echo of early survival logic: If I stay alert, longing, and focused, maybe I won’t be left. When danger is learned early or repeatedly, the nervous system prioritises familiarity over safety. Calm feels unfamiliar. Intensity feels alive. A regulated system rests in flexibility; a dysregulated one lives in survival modes.

Polyvagal theory, pioneered by Stephen Porges, gives language to this. The nervous system cycles between safety, fight or flight, and shutdown. For dysregulated systems, intensity often arises in sympathetic activation. Porges’ key insight is that the nervous system doesn’t ask, “Is this good for me?” It asks, “Is this familiar?” The body keeps returning to similar emotional dynamics while compulsively trying to resolve unfinished survival loops.

Limerence also finds fertile ground in feminine social conditioning. From early on, worth is often trained to be something granted, not inherent. The lesson is subtle but pervasive: You are valuable when you are desired, chosen, or approved of. Love becomes a performance with invisible scorecards.

This fuels internalised feminine narratives of proving worth. Instead of resting in being, the system hustles: Being desirable enough, being low-maintenance enough, being exceptional enough. bell hooks names this directly in All About Love: “All too often women believe it is a sign of commitment, an expression of love, to endure unkindness or cruelty, to forgive and forget.” The cultural emphasis on being chosen makes non-selection feel like erasure.

Esther Perel offers a counterpoint. Desire requires autonomy. When selfhood collapses in pursuit of love, fantasy replaces agency. Longing intensifies not because love is absent, but because selfhood is. Intensity fills the void that autonomy should occupy.

Ultimately, limerence is not immaturity. In many cases, it is a protection. True intimacy requires vulnerability. For those shaped by inconsistency or neglect, vulnerability once carried risk. Limerence offers desire without negotiation. Attachment without accountability. The Limerent Object is often distant or ambivalent precisely because their unavailability ensures full exposure is never required.

Pia Mellody describes love addiction as a fixation used to regulate emotional pain. Fantasy soothes distress while postponing the real work of growth. The paradox is cruel. Limerence feels like longing for connection, but functionally prevents it. You do not outgrow limerence by shaming it. You outgrow it by no longer needing it as a survival strategy.

When Love Arrived Without the Panic

The long descent into the architecture of limerence was not an academic exercise. It was a clearing of ground. A slow, solitary undoing that made space for something truer to arrive.

When S came into my life, he did not bring the violent rush of rescue. He brought the steady warmth of recognition.

The contrast with the past is unmistakable. I am rooted not in his attention, but in my own life. I am observant about my hyperactivation of attachment needs, yet there is no urge to perform. No impulse to sand down my edges to fit his gaze. The relief is not in being wanted, but in remaining anchored in myself while loving another.

What changed is not philosophical. It is physiological. My body has shifted from the frantic chemistry of survival, the spikes of adrenaline and cortisol, to the slower, sustaining rhythm of safety. Where D offered the intoxicating high of fantasy, S offers the grounding reality of presence. Where the old pattern was driven by hunger, this one is nourished by connection.

This is what healing looks like in the body, nervous systems learning how to rest together. Our intimacy is not forged through shared chaos, but through mutual exposure. In an early conversation where we both named our abandonment fears, there was no judgment, only steadiness. Being chosen without chasing is transformative. It is the first time I feel genuinely desired for my complexity, rather than merely for my potential to validate someone else.

Relationship experts call this a partnership, something I have never tasted before. Dr. Stan Tatkin describes it as becoming fluent in one another’s inner worlds, knowing how to soothe, how to repair. With my past partners, such conversations were unreachable. With S, they arise naturally. We speak openly about trauma patterns, nervous system responses, and histories that shaped us. He meets my psychological lens with curiosity. He offers his own story with care, courage and vulnerability.

There is a safety between us that makes time feel irrelevant. We can be spontaneous and unguarded. No performance. Only presence. This is the tenderness limerence never allows. The panic has softened into peace. And I see now that the work was never about finding someone to fill the void. It was about becoming someone for whom the void no longer needs to exist.

Why Limerence Feels Like Love (But Isn’t).

Naming limerence an illusion does not diminish its intensity. Its great deception lies in how convincingly it imitates love. It is a high-stakes drama that, in the absence of inner safety, passes for intimacy. The surge of emotion feels like depth, when it is often the nervous system locked in alarm.

The chemistry explains the spell. Intermittent reinforcement, a brief message after silence, a sudden warmth after distance, intensifies the craving. The Limerent Object becomes the prize not because of who they are, but because of how unpredictably they appear.

This is why limerence can feel more alive than love. But beneath the drama, limerence is a stress loop posing as passion

How Limerence Ends

Limerence is fueled by unsustainable energy. Eventually, the body intervenes.

My own limerence with D did not fade gently; it collapsed under the weight of its flawed premise. The cycle broke when D’s overpossessive side showed its ugly face, a harshness that finally shattered the idealisation. I realised that I don’t deserve such harshness. Grief for the fantasy came, slow and heavy. But it passed.

What followed was exhaustion and disillusionment. Yet, as someone who carried an anxious attachment, the silence felt unbearable, a loneliness so sharp it sent me window shopping at dating apps, seeking any familiar spark of intensity. The experiences were disappointing. But it was in that fragile space of solitude and search that grace intervened: S, an old friend, reappeared in my periphery, and our conversations began to thread into true intimacy.

It was his calm that allowed the unravelling. His steadiness gave me the strength to finally face the pattern and to write this trilogy. Research shows that trauma patterns do not dissolve through willpower. They reorganise only through real safety. Healing is not detachment, but the nervous system learning, through lived evidence, that closeness can be steady, mutual, and real. When that learning settles into the body, longing no longer needs fantasy to survive.

Judith Herman is unequivocal: trauma is a safety injury, and healing begins with secure relational ground. Once the body trusts that safety is real, it releases the highs it no longer needs and stops chasing what hurts.

A Different Kind of Beginning

The long, winding path from D’s consuming fire to S’s grounding presence marks a necessary evolution: the shift from Limerence to a steady ground for building secure Love. Limerence was the fever. A volatile state of hunger and fantasy that pointed me toward my unhealed places. Cathexis, explored in the next essay, is the conscious investment of emotional energy. And secure love is the quiet destination. Autonomy. Presence. Calm.

Limerence makes fantasy the relationship. Love makes reality the reward.

This journey has been a slow integration of the past, so the body no longer lives inside its echoes. A return to the self, where safety is not earned, but inhabited.

The wreckage was not subtle. Four stints in rehabilitation; Periods that resembled manic states; Relentless censure and corrosive shame from my family that clung like a film on my skin; The echo of internal gaslighting, numbing self-doubt and brutal self-criticism; Relationships strained to breaking; The quiet sacrifice of time that should have been spent forging a flourishing career worthy of my potential, and underneath everything, a denial so deep it felt like a second spine. At its worst, this journey included eighteen months swallowed by depression, where suicidal thoughts became a daily tide. I survived the weight of it all, but the cost was immense.

It is only now, four months into the fragile sunlight of recovery, that I have finally summoned the courage to lift the curtain and bear witness to the raw, unmasked engine of addiction that ran behind the scenes.

Travelling to the scene of the initial fracture, at the age of sixteen, I see a girl already bent under responsibilities she never asked for. I carried a melancholic heart misshapen by parentification and the constant, abrasive friction of my relationship with my mother. The emotional climate of home was a study in paradox: steady on the surface, profoundly volatile beneath. Financial strain was a silent pressure, but louder was the consuming fog of my parents’ ceaseless conflict. My father was sinking into a depression I lacked the vocabulary to name, and my mother, seeking solace, pulled me into the orbit of her unhappiness, forcing me to navigate adult emotions I was ill-equipped to handle. I was tasked with an invisible, paralysing duty: to choose between them, to manage their unregulated emotions, to hold the family’s fracturing centre, and to become an elder sister my ten-year-younger sister can idolise. I was terrified, quietly drowning in feelings far too large for a sixteen-year-old. Then came the smoke

It arrived as a benevolent thief, offering an urgent, desperate bid for self-preservation. Weed instantly softened the harsh edges of my confusion, numbing the constant ache. The silence of that first high was exhilarating. It felt profoundly safe, as if someone had finally, mercifully, turned the volume down on the relentless chaos that had been screaming inside my head. Under its influence, thoughts took on an interesting, safer geometry, music became a deeper language, and my inner world, for the first time, felt less painful. The seed of addiction wasn’t planted from mere curiosity or rebellion. It came from a child’s desperate need for peace.

The Truth of the Wound

When I began researching the intimate, complex relationship between substance abuse and the fractured psyche, a profound, compassionate voice emerged: that of Dr. Gabor Maté. His wisdom served as a balm, finally silencing the decades of internal shaming and corrosive self-blame. His articulation replaced my shrinking sense of self with a sense of dignity, confirming that addiction was not a moral failure or a disease I simply “had.” Rather, he taught, it was a tragic, desperate attempt to solve the fundamental human problems of emotional pain and deep isolation. He normalises the pull towards addictive behaviours by putting the onus on the circumstances. “Addiction is a perfectly normal response to abnormal circumstances”, he says.

Maté’s paradigm shifts the burden entirely, demanding a deeper, more empathetic inquiry of the core wound:

“If we want to understand addiction, we shouldn’t ask why the addiction, but why the pain.”

This enquiry compels us to listen not just to memory, but to the body’s deepest, most primal logic. My own early life was not a nurturing ecosystem, but a series of chronic threat assessments. The emotional climate of home constantly activated my nervous system’s ancient alarms. My survival was a performance. I managed my parents’ emotions to keep a fragile peace. I learned to disappear into Fawn. The tension never left my body. Some days I wanted to fight the chaos. Some days, I only wanted to Flee. And some days, I sank into the heavy silence of Freeze.

This constant performance left my body in a state of weary, corrosive activation. My nervous system was screaming for one thing: safety. True safety. The kind that allows for rest, connection, and creation and is governed by the Ventral Vagal state. The root cause of addiction, then, becomes tragically simple: the drug was a shortcut to that biological sanctuary. It was a chemical illusion of groundedness. It bypassed the long, difficult work of healing and connection, offering an instant simulation of the profound, unearned quiet I needed. This is the ultimate betrayal of addiction: it offers the very feeling the trauma stole, but only in exchange for the soul itself.

The quiet I searched for wasn’t just a mental choice; it was a deep, biological need. As research shows, the body remembers every traumatic shock and silence. My deep-seated pain may have started at the first foundations of my life. My nervous system was altered in its formative years by the maternal grief I absorbed in utero. This early distress created a foundation for my adolescent depression, trapping my mind in a state of chronic hyper-vigilance—a terrifying, ceaseless rush of stress hormones.

When the smoke arrived, it was an immediate, chemical answer to this internal panic. The cannabis did more than just dull the pain; it instantly hijacked the brain’s reward system, drowning the fear center with a massive surge of dopamine. This powerful external fix became the only way my brain knew how to find peace. The drug was the most effective tool I had to avoid the crushing storm of internal sensations—the cold dread, the corrosive shame, the terror of failure. For my body, long-term emotional suppression, achieved through the haze, became a tragic but successful survival plan.

This whole process was made much worse by the timing. The teenage brain, especially the prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for reason and judgment—is the last structure to complete its development, often around age twenty-five. Introducing a powerful chemical during this sensitive, formative window engraves the coping mechanism onto the core wiring, building a superhighway to instant relief. The young brain, driven by instant reward, learned the lesson quickly: the noise of life is not managed through growth, but extinguished by being numbed. This early contract solidified a nearly two-decade-long lie: that I could not handle my inner world without that chemical shortcut.

Denial and the Fractured Self

The moment the damage became impossible to ignore arrived with my first manic episode in 2015. Everyone around me pointed to the cannabis, yet I fought that truth with a profound internal resistance. I didn’t want to believe them; I couldn’t bear to lose the single mechanism that had stabilised my pain for so long. I launched a feverish search for spiritual explanations, psychological theories, or mystical rationales. I would settle for anything but the simple, terrifying answer of addiction. For years, I told myself the soothing lies: “There’s nothing wrong with me,” “It’s harmless,” “I can stop anytime.” Denial became a soft loyalty to my own pain. After the last rehab visit, I even wondered if I really had bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

This internal conflict defined my four trips to rehabilitation centres. The part of me that checked in was the terrified, drowning self that saw a life spiralling out of control. The part that resisted recovery, however, was the wounded, adolescent self that urgently needed the numbness to survive. Rehab itself often felt less like healing and more like shaming, shrinking, sedation, confinement, and deep misunderstanding. The conflict with family members, who struggled to understand the nature of the addiction, often made the confined healing process even harder.

Addiction as Attachment

When a genuine connection is unavailable or unsafe, the human heart will inevitably seek chemical soothing. This, as experts like Johan Hari argue, is the deep emotional architecture beneath the disease model.

“Addiction is not the opposite of sobriety; it is the opposite of connection.”

The substance steps in to fill the role of the caregiver, becoming the object of a desperate, insecure attachment. Dr. Sue Johnson’s work on attachment helps illuminate this internal role reversal: when a child is parentified or emotionally neglected, and the core need for reliable, safe connection is unmet, the substance becomes the predictable, non-judgemental comfort. The addiction is the body’s attempt to self-parent, providing the soothing and regulation that the nervous system (as shown by Dr. Stephen Porges’s Polyvagal Theory) did not receive. The chronic peacekeepers and emotionally overwhelmed children often fall into these dissociative escapes because their feelings have no language; the body, then, becomes the tragic translator. The drug becomes the one thing that always shows up, always offers relief, and always shields the wounded self from the terror of its own unheld emotion. This is the root of the compulsion: a powerful, misguided loyalty to the only constant source of safety the wounded self has ever known.

The architecture of addiction is a self-inflicted engine of despair, turning the initial desperate search for quiet into a relentless mechanism of self-punishment. The core loop—the cue, the craving, the fleeting relief—is instantly overshadowed by a fresh, corrosive wave of shame, making the next escape not an option, but an immediate necessity. The trauma survivor, already contending with a chemically depleted reward system, is doubly cursed: their nervous system demands relief, and the substance is the only thing that answers the call.

This toxic cycle offers a brief, fatal respite in the form of a false identity. I wore the drug like a costume, allowing myself to step onto a temporary stage as the calm one, the creative soul, or even the intentional rebel, using the haze as a dramatic shield against exposure. But this masquerade only further buried the terrified, drowning self beneath a series of lies. The substance, once a gentle friend offering solace, swiftly became a powerful shield protecting my wound, and inevitably transformed into the gilded cage of a prison, where I remained trapped by a loyalty to the very thing destroying me.

The Turning Point

The refusal to truly let go was a fear of losing the one faithful guardian of my pain. However I watched my cognitive sharpness dissolve into a frustrating fog. The deepest cost was the loss of the will to live fully, clinging only to the subconscious search for a safe, listening presence to finally make the terror stop.

The shift, when it finally arrived, was astonishingly simple, yet profound: the gift of medication for my marijuana-induced disorder. It was the biological scaffolding my brain desperately needed. The fog lifted like a sudden storm clearing the mountains. Sleep, for the first time in memory, became deep and restorative. Thoughts gained coherence, anxiety loosened its crippling grip, and the old, silent fear—the one that made my feet curl into a posture of panic—finally began to soften. Joy returned, not as a chemical surge, but as a quiet, dependable presence. I laughed more, trusted the world more, and found myself believing in the future again. The internal rewiring had begun.

The path back to myself demanded far more than the simple removal of the substance; it required dismantling the entire, intricate system of trauma that fueled it. The medical intervention, which stabilised the brain’s chemistry, was only the prerequisite. The true work lies in the messy, human process that demands the courage to face the trauma that the addiction was guarding, accepting the slow, painful process of feeling everything the drug had promised to hold at bay.

The greatest healing, ultimately, is the rewriting of identity. I am no longer the broken child, the confused rebel, or the dependent addict. The substance provided a false, stagnant identity; sobriety offers a dynamic, evolving self. The energy once spent maintaining the façade of the addiction is now being poured into the genuine self that was waiting patiently in the shadows. My energy is now freed for creation, connection, and presence. I am finally constructing a life that is anchored in presence, not escape. I am learning to reparent myself with compassion, to be in my body without fear, and to recognise that my nervous system isn’t a wild animal anymore.

This is the miracle of recovery: not simply putting the bottle down or stopping the smoke, but finding the essential self that was lost beneath the layers of coping and concealment. Recovery isn’t just the absence of the drug. It’s the presence of myself.

In the end, Maté was right about the deepest meaning of the journey:

“To recover something means to find it again. So what do people find when they recover? They find themselves.” - Dr. Gabor Mate

At thirty-six, I’m not just repairing; I’m rebuilding from the ground up. I’ve chosen to sit for my Class 12 exams—the same ones I once failed—not because I’m chasing the past, but because I refuse to leave any part of myself unfinished. And while I do that, I’m building a new career from scratch, preparing to become a life coach. Inside my relationships, I shrank — convinced that love was a kindness others extended to me out of mercy. My ground zero was always the same: a feeling of not being enough.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to belong without performing. I wanted to stop fitting in and finally start existing.

There were a few relationships where my authentic self was welcome, no matter how childish I was, no matter how much chaos I carried, no matter how freely my tears flowed at the smallest act of tenderness. Those moments became my lighthouses. They showed me that it was possible to be loved without performance, to be held without fear. They inspired me to take the long journey home, toward finding who I truly am. Yet, the winding paths before me had no map.

The Pilgrimage of Self

For nearly a decade, I walked on—one foot after the other—searching for my authentic self. I kept asking, Who am I? and peeling away layer after layer of inherited, conditioned selves. What I didn’t realise was that inside that searing question lived another, quieter one: Whom do I belong to?

Even reaching that point was a long pilgrimage in itself. My enquiry didn’t begin with whom do I belong to, but with do I belong at all?

“In considering the origins of our estrangement, we must begin in our personal stories. .. For some, this first estrangement may be shaped by trauma, abuse or neglect. Maybe you were made to care for the needs of others while your own inner life were dismissed, humiliated or ignored. Maybe you were made to feel necessary in only one way, while the true inclinations of your belonging were sent like fugitives underground. - Toko Pa Turner”

The First Estrangement

My childhood was a happy place. I lived long hours inside the world of fairy tales, colouring pages with pastels, collecting pebbles from the garden, watching how trees and shadows whispered to each other. I would wonder where the butterflies came from and where the grasshoppers disappeared at dusk. I belonged effortlessly then — to daydreams, to stories, to colours, to the hum of the afternoon air.

But somewhere along the way, that belonging loosened. The gaze that once saw wonder, began to turn inward, always asking- what’s wrong with me that i no longer feel at home? The world grew louder. My continuous rebelling against my mother gave me a turbulent teenage and it continued. There were expectations, hierarchies, comparisons. The quiet rhythm between me and life began to dim. It wasn’t one big rupture; it was a slow, almost invisible drifting — the kind that makes you forget you were once part of everything you loved.

How does one consciously retrieve a belonging that was lost unconsciously? All I could feel was a blankness near my chest — a quiet, persistent ache I called melancholia. I carried it like a ghost until another rupture split me open: my father’s passing when I was seventeen. As the “strong” elder child, I refused to cry, mistaking suppression for strength. That unwept grief calcified inside me, what I would later recognise as depression.

The heaviness shadowed even my studies. Numbers blurred before my eyes, each equation reminding me of my father’s absence. In my school final examinations, I failed in accountancy, the very subject he had taught me. With that failure, a part of my belonging to him seemed to break away. I drifted into a diploma in journalism, but my heart wasn’t there either. I couldn’t find pride in that institution or claim it as my own. In a way, I never truly belonged to any alma mater, only to the quiet, unseen classrooms life kept sending my way

Mistaking Intensity for Intimacy

These classrooms arrived in many forms — a new city, the pulse of professional life, the many houses I tried to make into homes, the relationships I entered, and the friendships I nurtured. I carried the ache of unbelonging everywhere.

I kept mistaking attachment for affection, cathexis for love. I confused intensity with intimacy.

For years, I believed belonging was something others could grant me — a reward for being good, kind, helpful, beautiful, or easy to love. But belonging that depends on performance is merely another form of exile.

The Healing Revelation

After nearly a decade of waking up to the ache of not belonging anywhere — carrying a tumultuous relationship with my mother and sister that I couldn’t seem to heal, navigating continuous inner work, and a lingering marijuana addiction — the medicine of simple acknowledgement arrived.

“Learning a faulty definition of love when we were quite young makes it difficult to be loving as we grow older.” — bell hooks

During a family constellation healing session, I discovered that, contrary to my long-held belief, I was born out of love. I was never a burden on my family. I learned that I had absorbed my mother’s grief while still in her womb — the sorrow of losing a stillborn daughter before me. In that moment of recognition, I released both her pain and the heavy mantle of being the “elder” child. Energetically, I was the second. As the order of love returned to its rightful place, something inside me softened. I also let go of the old confusion that love required choosing sides — a belief born from witnessing my parents’ conflicts. I realised I could love them both, and my entire family, as one whole.

Learning to Love Without Mothering

Healing wasn’t a miracle; it was a slow remembering. Within weeks, I began to feel lighter. In a few months, the turmoil within the family quietened, almost as if a long-held knot had loosened. I realised I had spent years trying to mother my mother. My shoulders always felt tight around her as if I was bracing for something to fall. I remember the heaviness in my chest whenever she sighed as though my lungs learned to breathe for her. Even as a child, my stomach clenched, my feet curled before her moods turned; my body learned her rhythm before I learned my own. There was a constant ache behind my ribs, a quiet readiness to watch her back.

These patterns had turned me into an empath, adept at understanding if the other needs mothering and pouring that care, sometimes in an unwanted way. That tendency quietly shaped all my relationships. In truth, I had never learned how to love in a mature, healthy manner.

When I stopped mothering my mother, it felt as if someone unclasped a belt around my ribs. My palms, always reaching out, now rested quietly on my own lap. My breath began to feel like mine. I began the slow work of calling back my projections, piece by piece, from the people I had placed them on. Some relationships faded along the way, but their absence no longer ached. For the first time, I wasn’t a broken child wearing an adult’s body. I was seeing life through my own eyes — clear, steady, and unborrowed

Returning Home to Life

Since then, belonging has stopped feeling like a destination and started feeling like breath — something I could return to, again and again, no matter where I was. I no longer search for it in rooms that do not see me or in people who cannot meet me. Instead, I began tracing its quiet presence in ordinary rhythms — the way an idea grows into a creation, the way a morning light touches my plants, the warmth of a teacup between both palms, the simple steadiness of my breath after meditation.

Belonging, I realised, was not something to find but something to remember. It had been here all along — beneath the noise, the striving, the ache to prove my worth. The moment I stopped performing, life opened its arms.

There are still days when the old ache visits — the feeling of being misplaced, unseen, misunderstood. But now I meet it gently, like an old friend who once helped me survive. I remind myself that I belong, not because I am loved perfectly, but because I am here.

The Arrival

It arrived quietly — not as heartbreak, not as loss, but as a dark, familiar drift of cloud that knows the hour of the dimming light.

It had been a good day — a day off from work, a movie, long laughter, unhurried conversation, burning crackers with my friends and family. Yet as my heart fell still, the dull, deep thing returned from its hiding place.

I knew its texture — the silence of it, warm like the hug of an old companion who never really left. It took me a while to notice it, and when I did, I tried to reason with it.
There is no real problem, I told myself.
But logic is a brittle key that could not turn this ancient lock.

This part of me lived beneath the surface tension — a deepwater memory.
It had no need for repair, no wish to be fixed.
It asked only for its true, quiet name.

Our Reflex to Escape

This ache was not my enemy, no ache ever is. It was my oldest, untranslated truth, searching for the shape of a word. It kept coming back for days. For some reason, it chose the evening hours when I felt dull, empty and lonely.

I tried to rush past it: a frantic click, a scroll, a devotion to my chosen numbing mechanisms. And in that flight, I abandoned the waiting child who simply yearned to be seen.

To stand at that still, witnessing door — this is the true ordeal.

“What you resist, persists.” — Carl Jung

The oldest maps light up within the brain, the bright, panicked circuitry of flight.
Our coping mechanisms are well-rehearsed, and we reach for the escape rope before the mind has even named the fire.

The frantic scroll. The hollow ring of a phone call to an unavailable friend. The dense comfort of too much food.
Every nervous system designs its own elaborate exit, its own way of reaching for the feeling of safety.

But numbing is not safety. It is a heavy velvet curtain drawn down — a temporary darkness.
We trade the honest, difficult ache for the slow, quiet abandonment of the self.

We are taught the mantra of fast recovery: “Chin up. Move on. Get over it.”

The culture whispers that stillness is rot, that slowness is a shameful stall.

Yet the deepest reckoning arrives only when the movement stops.

When we craft a clearing of quiet air around the place where pain lives, it might finally speak. It might unburden the untold stories that have been a heavy ballast on the soul, the history that weighs the system down.

This is the true terror.

“Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.” — Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

One evening, I chose a different route. I tried to sit beside it, to whisper what hurts into the cooling air, and I felt a silent, long-held exhale.

The grip loosened. The ache softened. Witnessed, it was ready to finally let itself out of my system.

We do not run from the ache itself. We run from the whisper of its reveal. We pause not, and we name not, because we fear the truth behind the curtain. Like the lurking shadow beneath the childhood bed, each ache is merely the keeper of a story.

And to name the hurt is to finally consent to hear the full, long narrative of the self.

Listening Beneath the Noise

When I named the ache, admitting to myself, “I feel lonely”, it allowed me to bypass the familiar trap of avoidance.

Breathing with the ache, I realised it was an echo of an old ache — one that had little to do with my current life.

My presence created a spaciousness, and within that space, the root insight bloomed.

I remembered my childhood — the days of being an outcast, where loneliness followed me through crowded rooms. I often felt unlovable and ashamed of being a misfit.

The revelation landed softly: this urgent evening ache was not about today’s empty calendar or yesterday’s conversation. It was an echo — the young, outcast self still small and ashamed in the corner of my nervous system, reaching out across the years.

To realise this was to unburden myself of present blame. My adult self, safe and capable, had been answering a distress call from another time.

The ache had not been asking to be fixed — only to be witnessed without judgment, to be loved without condition.

I looked at the lonely feeling not as a flaw to be corrected, but as a child who needed a home.
I began to speak to that younger self — the unlovable misfit — with the kindness I was never shown.
I let the shame sit beside me, offering it quiet space instead of the usual frantic flight

The Stories Pain Teaches You to Believe

When the ache arrived each evening, I didn’t just feel its weight; I heard its whispers.
My energy felt constricted. My thoughts ran a tired, self-wounding loop.
The inner critic unearthed every flawed memory, every misstep.

I am unlovable, and it’s all my fault, it said.
I remembered every place where I had been too much — and forgot to question whether others had simply lacked the capacity to meet me.

I remembered every corner where shame had been waiting. I felt crippled, unable to undo those vanished moments.

The most compassionate thing I could attempt was to sit in the torrent of those stories, listening to their language, yet refusing to let them become my gospel.

It was an ordeal: to offer presence to the ruinous thoughts, yet not grant them the power to cause further damage.

Naming vs Labelling

To truly name the ache is an act of gentle, close identification that opens the door, allowing the pain to step from shadow into light.

Labelling, however, is colder. It is the hurried judgment: “This is my brokenness. This is my disorder.”
Labelling is a fixed noun; naming is a compassionate verb.
Labelling hammers the self into permanence.
Naming grants breath to a living storm.

Labelling seals the self in the dark; naming invites it into conversation.
One is the cage of finality. The other is the freedom of light.

The Shift

When the familiar shadow returned, I no longer reached for distraction. I turned toward it and said, “I see you. You are here. And you are not alone.”

The aftermath was a profound lightness of being. When I waited for the ache to return the following evening, it simply wasn’t there.

I still chose a solitary walk; I still sipped my cup of chai without a word to anyone. Yet, the emptiness was gone.

Healing had occurred, not through battle, but through acceptance. A subtle longing to be met persisted, yes, but my energy was no longer a tightening fist. It was open, joyful, and flowing.

The shadow had been witnessed, and in that act of unwavering presence, it was finally released.

The Root Question

Below the rush of every coping mechanism, beneath the layered grief of loss or shame, the deepest ache always whispers the same two questions into the dark.

These are the bedrock anxieties that underpin the self: Am I safe in this shifting world? and Am I worthy to be loved, just as I am?

Every tightening in the chest, every pull toward flight, is merely a frantic messenger carrying these ancient, unaddressed inquiries.

The power of naming the pain, then, is the act of turning inward to meet these two fundamental needs with your own presence—to finally give the questioning child the calm, unwavering answer it has always deserved.

Closing Reflection

To call a hurt by its true, quiet name is not a clinical exercise. It is not an effort to place the self beneath a diagnosis—to categorise and confine the soul.

It is, instead, an act of devotion; a slow, repeated turning toward the deepest, most vulnerable part of you. It is the promise you finally keep to the waiting child: I will not leave you here alone. I will stay.

This unwavering presence is the quiet power, the ultimate grace that allows the pain to release its burden, because it is finally, fully met.

Rebirthing isn’t mere reinvention. It’s gestation — the quiet yet chaotic womb of time gathering force until an inner push sends me through the dreaded birth canal once more.

The Anatomy of Rebirth

Every cycle of ending demands a descent before new light.

Rebirth is not merely metamorphosis. It is not the gentle cocooning of a caterpillar that chews on mulberry leaves and one day unfurls her wings. Rebirthing is a unique form of transformation. It carries the death of the old self, yet this dying-while-living unfolds in slow, deliberate spurts. I have walked through this process many times before, yet no two births have ever been the same.

Deciding to create The Tender Room feels like another such rebirth. Leaving behind my old way of being, I am not only birthing myself; I am birthing a system that will let me sustain myself while keeping my softness alive.

The Liminal Body

This time, I have been observing something powerful happening in the nervous system when I am in a liminal state — a space between worlds, between the old self and the new, between the mundane and the mystical, between endings and beginnings.

The body stopped chasing the rush of validation and began craving the quietness of being real.
A willingness to sit with what collapses and to listen for what might rise next has taken root in my heart.

Curiosity felt lonely at first. I didn’t feel the mad rush of passion for my work; instead, an unnamed sorrow began to color my heart.

An entry from my journal read:

“There are days when sorrow doesn’t come with a reason.

It seeps in quietly — like mist after the storm — leaving you wondering why your chest feels heavy again, even after so much light..

Sometimes unnamed grief strikes like an ancient ache tightening your throat. Everything turns the shade of a numbness that refuses to thaw.

Having spent years sitting with a grieving heart, you take it along for a walk.

The city is slowly returning to rhythm after days of festivity. Strings of twinkling lights now hang dull and still. Pandals that once brimmed with crowds are dark — dogs sleep there, unbothered.

There is a stillness in the air, and you wonder if it is mirroring the stillness inside you...

But this too is a season — a gentle reminder that healing doesn’t always feel light. Sometimes it arrives in silence, disguised as emptiness, waiting for you to rest there long enough for meaning to take root again.”

The Gestation Before Becoming

Resting is gestating one’s new self into being. When the seed of a new life enters and the image of what can be achieved begins to form, there is awe at what might unfold. And in this resting period, the nervous system gathers energy for the new journey.

Yet voyaging into a new life is often more difficult than gathering resources, booking tickets, packing a rucksack and just going.

Rebirthing is also answering a calling — the longing that has lived deep inside your heart for as long as you can remember.
But there is a caveat.

When I peek beneath the quietness of being, I find sorrow sitting there.
When the sorrow passes, I see the trembling river.

Sitting with it, I can feel how my heart is torn apart. A part of me wants to run away into the quiet comfort of the rut of my old life. The sad old life. It says, no matter how sad you were, you were safe.

The body and nervous system want to stay with it. I feel distracted — the urge to scroll, to message friends, to eat junk food, to make another cup of coffee.

Moving toward what I desire feels like a confrontation I’m not ready for. Writing my own essays and putting my voice on a larger platform feels like a direct threat to the survival system my whole sense of self was built around.

Between Who I Was and Who I Am Becoming

“Longing doesn’t just invite life forward, it drags your frozen past into the room”-

The frozen self keeps whispering that I can’t be anything else and survive. Connected patterns of bracing, defence, withdrawal, repetition — they show up in my body, and yet I keep returning to my laptop to type this essay.

I meet the fear with courage, taking it word by word. Because that is the only way I know.

I’m not only meeting the possibility of a new life — my nervous system is threatened as the old identity of smallness begins to fall away. The cognitive brain cannot grasp the illogic of this, but much of our functioning is dictated by the subconscious.

The patterns of unsafety activate the moment I touch the desire to become more than who I am now. Waves of protection rise — stories of who I had to be. These survival patterns, woven in frozen time, surface and try to interrupt forward movement. Touching desire also means touching unsafety.

The Liminal Threshold

Here, I’m reminded of the imaginal cells that turn a caterpillar into a butterfly.
This is where metamorphosis quietly takes place — the energy of new life beginning to root.

These tiny, blueprint builders lie dormant for a season, then awaken as catalysts. When the old, grosser body of the caterpillar dissolves into a primaeval soup of life, the imaginal cells arrive. At first, the the dissolving larval world attacks them as invaders. But they are unstoppable — gathering, uniting, drawing strength from the breakdown itself, using the caterpillar’s dissolved form as fuel.

From that chaos and liquid darkness, they transmute the old into the new — building every wing, every leg, every perfect part required for flight.

To touch the imaginal cells within us, we need courage — and a vision strong enough to anchor us through the chaos. The pull of the familiar will try to draw us back into the old world. You might have to walk through confusion, brain fog, and endless loops of distraction. The closed loop of survival will try to convince you it’s easier to quit than to continue.

The Tipping Point

Rebirth asks for perseverance — one breath, one word, one step at a time. Here, in this juncture, you become the real artist of your own existence.

“I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.” — Vincent van Gogh

Like every stroke of a paintbrush of a visionary artist, your life becomes your canvas, where you don’t mind your wrists aching or your shoulders pounding from painting the field with tiny sunshine yellow strokes, you keep moving and moving and moving. When you keep walking long enough, braving the discomfort of moving forward, there comes a tipping point where perseverance becomes passion.

Here at this juncture, fears and doubts die a quiet death. As I kept typing one word after another, alchemy happened. As I consciously chose to confront the story of unsafety whilst rooting deeper into the spacious soil of my being, I found aliveness. Perseverance made way for passion. Passion for joy.

I’ve come to understand one thing: it’s in the slow alchemy of thawing that we reclaim the tiny pockets of aliveness — and find our way to a more joyous way of living.

And this aliveness, this joy, is the first light shining through the open door of The Tender Room.
