I have lived that picture. I have been the man in the suit. And I can tell you that the handshake is the least important part.

For more than thirty years, I have worked at the intersection of business, government, and international development. As Special Envoy for Trade and Investment for the Republic of Sierra Leone, as an entrepreneur building food brands across the American South, as a consultant guiding companies and governments through the complicated terrain of cross-border partnerships, I have sat in rooms where deals worth millions were discussed, negotiated, and sometimes lost. I have also sat in rooms where nothing was signed, nothing was announced, and yet everything that mattered was built.

What I want to share with you is what diplomacy actually looks like when no one is watching. Not the ceremony, but the substance. Not the photo, but the work behind it. Because if you are an entrepreneur, a nonprofit leader, a educator, or anyone trying to build something that crosses borders, you are already doing diplomacy whether you call it that or not.

Here are eight lessons I have learned the hard way.

1. Relationships come before transactions.

This is the first and most important lesson, and the one most people get wrong.

In the early days, I made the mistake that most ambitious people make. I would walk into a meeting with a proposal, a pitch, and an ask. I had done my research. I had my numbers. I was ready to close. And more often than not, the meeting would end politely, nothing would happen, and I would walk away frustrated, wondering what went wrong.

What went wrong was the order of operations.

In most of the world, and especially across West Africa and the Gulf, business does not begin with a transaction. It begins with a relationship. People want to know who you are, what you value, and whether they can trust you, before they ever want to hear about your proposal. The proposal is not the opening. It is the result of trust already established.

I learned to slow down. I learned to invest time in people before I ever asked for anything. I learned that a two-hour conversation over tea, where no business is discussed at all, can be more productive than a formal presentation. Because by the time the tea is finished, something has been built that no PowerPoint can create, which is genuine human connection.

If you take one thing from this article, take this: invest in the relationship first. The transaction will follow, or it will not. But the relationship is the asset either way.

2. Listen before you negotiate.

Most people think negotiation is about talking. It is not. It is about listening.

When I sit across from a government minister in Freetown, or an investor in Doha, or a university president in Atlanta, I am not thinking about what I am going to say next. I am listening. I am listening for what they care about, what they are worried about, what they are not saying. I am listening for the constraint they cannot name, the priority they are too diplomatic to state bluntly, the concern they will only hint at.

You cannot create value for someone if you do not know what they value. And you will never know what they value if you are doing all the talking.

I have been in meetings where I said almost nothing for forty-five minutes, and by the end, the other person felt heard, respected, and understood. That meeting produced more progress than any pitch I could have delivered. Because people do not need you to convince them. They need you to understand them first.

Negotiation is not a performance. It is a conversation. And the best conversationalists are, without exception, the best listeners.

3. Never underestimate cultural intelligence.

I have seen brilliant deals collapse because someone used the wrong greeting, insisted on the wrong agenda, or failed to understand that in some cultures, a direct no is an insult, and an indirect maybe is the closest thing to a yes you will get.

Cultural intelligence is not about memorizing etiquette. It is about understanding how people in a given culture make decisions, how they communicate, what they consider respectful, and what they consider offensive. It is about understanding the rhythm of a place, the weight of its history, and the unwritten rules that govern everything.

When I travel to the Gulf, I know that time moves differently. Meetings start when they start. Hospitality comes before business. Prayer times shape the schedule. And the relationship between a host and a guest carries obligations that go far beyond the meeting room.

When I work in West Africa, I know that elders speak first. That protocol matters. That the community is never far from the conversation, even when the room only has two people in it. That respect is not optional, it is the price of admission.

You do not need to be an expert in every culture. But you do need to be humble enough to learn, curious enough to ask, and wise enough to know that what feels natural to you might feel foreign to someone else.

Cultural intelligence is not a soft skill. It is a hard skill. And it is often the difference between a deal that closes and a deal that falls apart.

4. Your reputation travels faster than you do.

I remember walking into a meeting in Saudi Arabia a few years ago, and the person I was meeting said something I have never forgotten. He said, “We know you. We know what you did in Sierra Leone. We know how you treated the people there.”

I had never met this man before. He had never been to Sierra Leone. But my reputation had arrived before I did, carried by people I did not know were watching, through networks I did not know existed.

This is both a warning and an opportunity. It is a warning because if you cut corners, if you overpromise, if you treat people poorly, that information will travel. It will travel faster than you can. And it will arrive in rooms you have not entered yet, spoken by people you have not met, shaping opinions you will never get to correct.

It is an opportunity because if you are honest, if you follow through, if you treat every person with respect regardless of their title, that travels too. And it opens doors you did not know were there.

Your reputation is not what you say about yourself. It is what others say about you when you are not in the room. Guard it carefully, because it is the only currency that works in every country.

5. Follow-through is a form of diplomacy.

Anyone can have a good meeting. Anyone can shake a hand and smile. The work begins after the meeting ends.

I cannot count the number of times someone has said to me, “You are the only person who actually did what you said you would do after that meeting.” And every time I hear it, I feel two things at once. I feel proud, and I feel sad. I feel sad because follow-through should not be remarkable. It should be the baseline. But it is not.

In the world of international partnerships, the follow-up email, the promised introduction, the document you said you would send, these are not administrative tasks. They are diplomatic acts. Every time you do what you said you would do, you are building trust. Every time you do not, you are eroding it.

I have seen relationships that took years to build damaged by a single missed follow-through. And I have seen skeptical partners won over by nothing more than consistent, reliable follow-through over time.

If you want to be trusted internationally, do what you say. Every time. On time. Without excuses. It sounds simple. It is not. But it is the foundation everything else stands on.

6. People remember how you made them feel.

There is a line often attributed to Maya Angelou: people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. In diplomacy, this is not just a beautiful sentiment. It is a strategic truth.

I have had meetings where the agenda was never completed, the proposal was never discussed, and the outcome was nothing that could be put in a memo. And yet those meetings changed everything, because the person on the other side felt respected, heard, and valued.

I have also had meetings where every item on the agenda was checked off, every term was agreed to, and every box was filled, and yet nothing came of it, because the person on the other side felt rushed, pressured, or treated as a means to an end.

In every culture I have worked in, from the American South to West Africa to the Gulf, this truth holds. People are people first. Before they are officials, investors, partners, or counterparts. And people remember how you treated them.

So before you walk into any room, ask yourself not just what you want to accomplish, but how you want the other person to feel when they leave. That question will change your approach more than any briefing document ever could.

7. The best partnerships create value on both sides.

The worst deals I have ever seen were the ones where one side won everything and the other side walked away with nothing but a signature. Those deals do not last. They unravel. They create resentment. And the resentment shows up later, in ways you cannot predict.

The best deals I have been part of, the ones that have lasted years and grown over time, are the ones where both sides walked away feeling like they had gained something real. Not equal value, because value is not always equal. But genuine value, real value, the kind that makes both sides want to come back to the table and do more.

When I am negotiating a partnership, I am always thinking about what the other side needs. Not because I am selfless, but because I am strategic. A partnership where only one side benefits is not a partnership. It is an extraction. And extractions do not scale.

The Building Bridges Initiative, which connects HBCUs with African universities, governments, and corporations, is built on this principle. Every institution that joins the delegation needs to walk away with something that matters to them. Scholarships. Research partnerships. Cultural exchange. Investment opportunities. If every participant gains, the platform grows. If only one side gains, the platform collapses.

Value creation is not a zero-sum game. It is the art of expanding the pie so everyone gets a meaningful slice. And in diplomacy, that is the only kind of deal worth signing.

8. Sometimes the most important meeting happens outside the conference room.

Some of the most consequential moments in my career did not happen in conference rooms. They happened over dinner. They happened walking through a market. They happened sitting in a mosque. They happened in the car on the way to the airport. They happened in moments that were not on any agenda, not minuted by any staffer, not recorded by any protocol.

I remember a trip to West Africa where the formal meetings were productive but the real breakthrough happened afterward, sitting outside in the evening, talking about our families, our histories, our hopes. In that moment, the person across from me stopped being a government official and became a person. And I stopped being an envoy and became a person. And two people, without titles between them, found common ground that no formal meeting could have produced.

I remember a conversation in Switzerland that started as a business discussion and became something else entirely. We talked about legacy. We talked about what we wanted to leave behind for our children and our communities. We talked about faith, about purpose, about the responsibility that comes with access and opportunity. And by the end of that conversation, the business relationship had a foundation that no term sheet could have built.

Do not get me wrong. Conference rooms matter. Agendas matter. Agreements matter. But the moments that break open a relationship often happen in the margins. In the spaces between the official program. In the conversations that no one scheduled.

So leave room for the margins. Do not over-schedule. Do not rush from meeting to meeting without leaving time for the conversations that matter most, the ones that happen when the formalities fall away and two people simply talk.

What I Have Learned

Diplomacy is not a title. It is not a ceremony. It is not a photo op. Diplomacy is the daily, patient work of building trust across distance, across culture, across difference. It is the discipline of showing up, listening deeply, following through, and creating value for everyone at the table.

If you are building a business that crosses borders, you are a diplomat. If you are leading a nonprofit that serves communities you have never lived in, you are a diplomat. If you are an educator building bridges between institutions, you are a diplomat. The question is not whether you are doing diplomacy. The question is whether you are doing it well.

The answer, I have found, is simpler than it sounds. Show up. Listen. Follow through. Create value. And never forget that the person across the table is a person first.

That is diplomacy. Not the handshake. Everything before and after it.

Not a dollar amount, though that often follows. I mean the cost of the relationship never formed, the partnership never explored, the idea never shared, the door never opened. Every time we choose silence over introduction, isolation over engagement, comfort over curiosity, we pay a price we cannot see. And that price compounds over time.

I have spent over three decades building businesses, leading diplomatic missions, founding nonprofits, and organizing communities across the United States, West Africa, and the Middle East. If there is one lesson that has held true across every border I have crossed, every boardroom I have entered, and every negotiation I have conducted, it is this: people do business with people they know.

It’s Not Who You Know, It’s Who Knows You

We have all heard the old saying: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” I would take it one step further. In my experience, it is not who you know, it is who knows you.

Knowledge is essential. Competence is non-negotiable. But relationships are the currency that converts what you know into what you can actually accomplish. When someone picks up the phone to call you about an opportunity, it is because they remember you, trust you, and believe you can deliver. That call does not come from a resume. It comes from a conversation.

As entrepreneurs, diplomats, nonprofit leaders, and community organizers, our effectiveness is directly tied to the breadth and depth of our relationships. The question is not whether you are capable. The question is whether the right people know you are capable, and whether you have taken the time to know them in return.

Communication Is Key

Every relationship begins with communication. Not a transaction. Not a pitch. A genuine exchange between two people who are willing to be present with one another.

In my diplomatic work, I have sat with heads of state, university presidents, corporate executives, and community leaders. The conversations that produced real outcomes were never the ones that started with an ask. They were the ones that started with curiosity. What does this person care about? What are they building? What challenges are they facing? What do we have in common that neither of us expected?

Communication is not about talking. It is about listening long enough to understand what someone actually needs, and then determining whether you can help. That is the foundation of every successful partnership I have ever built, from Supreme Foods Worldwide to the Building Bridges Initiative.

Networking Presents the Opportunity

Networking is one of the most misunderstood words in business and diplomacy. Too many people treat it as a transaction, collect a card, make a pitch, move on. That is not networking. That is canvassing.

True networking is the deliberate practice of putting yourself in rooms where you do not already belong, and being genuinely present when you get there. It is the willingness to introduce yourself to someone who owes you nothing, to ask a question that shows you are interested, and to follow up in a way that proves you meant it.

The opportunity is not in the room. The opportunity is in the conversation that happens in the room, and in the one that follows it a week later, and the one after that. Relationships are not built in a single exchange. They are built through consistent, intentional engagement over time.

Build Business Through Relationships

When I started in business, I learned quickly that the best marketing strategy was not an advertisement. It was a relationship. People buy from people they trust. They invest with people they trust. They refer people they trust. And trust is not something you can purchase or manufacture, it is something you earn, one conversation at a time.

My consulting firm, Shamsid-Deen & Associates, has advised high-net-worth clients, athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs for over two decades. Not one of those relationships began with a cold call that closed on the first conversation. They began with a handshake, a shared meal, a mutual introduction, or a genuine moment of connection. The business followed the relationship, never the other way around.

If you want to grow your business, do not start with a spreadsheet. Start with a conversation. Call someone you have been meaning to call. Accept the invitation you have been putting off. Show up to the event where you do not know anyone. That is where the growth lives.

Understanding and Celebrating Differences

One of the greatest costs of avoiding conversation is the cost of staying inside your own world. When we only talk to people who look like us, think like us, and live where we live, we shrink our understanding of what is possible.

Some of the most transformative conversations of my life have happened in places that were unfamiliar to me, in Dakar, in Doha, in Freetown, in Atlanta neighborhoods I had never visited. Every time I sat down with someone whose background, faith, or experience was different from mine, I walked away with something I could not have gotten from a book, a briefing, or a boardroom of people who already agreed with me.

Understanding differences is not about compromising your values. It is about expanding your vision. When you celebrate what makes another person’s perspective unique, you build a bridge that neither of you could have built alone. That is the entire premise of the Building Bridges Initiative. We do not erase our differences. We build with them.

The Ecosystems That Sustain You

No one builds anything lasting alone. The institutions and organizations around you are not background scenery, they are the infrastructure of your success. But that infrastructure only works if you engage with it.

Civic Organizations, Rotary clubs, community boards, volunteer networks. These are where civic leaders are forged and where reputations are built through service, not self-promotion. My own appointment to the Georgia Council for International Visitors began with relationships built through civic engagement.

Chambers of Commerce, Local and regional chambers are where small businesses become regional forces. Show up, participate, and let the business community know who you are and what you bring.

Business Organizations, Industry associations, trade groups, and professional networks. These are where you learn what is happening in your sector before it becomes public knowledge, and where you build the peer relationships that sustain you through challenges.

Consular Corps, For anyone engaged in international business or diplomacy, the consular community is indispensable. These are the people who can open doors to governments, facilitate trade, and connect you to opportunities across borders. Get to know them. Invite them to your events. Be a resource, not just a request.

NGOs and Nonprofits, The nonprofit sector is where mission meets community. Whether you are a founder, a board member, or a partner, these organizations connect you to the people and causes that define your legacy.

International Organizations, The United Nations, the African Union, the Islamic Development Bank, USAID, and similar bodies shape the global policies and funding streams that affect every venture operating across borders. You do not need to be a diplomat to engage with them. You need to show up and be willing to learn.

Know Your Community

Before you can build anything, a business, a movement, a diplomatic relationship, you have to know your community. Not just the demographics. The people. The history. The challenges. The aspirations. The leaders who are already doing the work, whether they have a title or not.

This means developing a marketing and communications plan that is rooted in relationship, not just reach. Who are you trying to reach? What do they care about? How do they prefer to communicate? What value are you offering before you ask for anything in return?

A communications plan without relationships is just noise. A networking strategy without genuine interest is just performance. The goal is not to be visible. The goal is to be known, and to know others, well enough that when the moment for collaboration arrives, the foundation is already there.

Engaging Domestically and Abroad

The principles of relationship-building do not change when you cross a border. What changes is the context. The same curiosity, respect, and consistency that build trust in your hometown will build trust in Dakar, Doha, or Dubai, but only if you are willing to do the work.

Engaging internationally means learning the cultural norms of the spaces you enter. It means understanding protocol, honoring tradition, and recognizing that in many parts of the world, business is not conducted until relationship is established. The deal comes after the dinner, not before it.

When I lead delegations to West Africa, I do not arrive with contracts. I arrive with questions, with respect, and with a genuine desire to understand what the people I am meeting need. The contracts come later, and they come because the foundation of trust was laid first.

Your Future, Your Legacy, and Your Community

Whether it is social engagement or building business, your future, your legacy, and your community depend on these conversations.

I think about this often. I think about the conversations that shaped the Supreme Family Foundation, which started as after-school programs in Atlanta and grew into an organization that has raised millions to feed seniors and families during a pandemic, built partnerships across continents, and launched an initiative to bring $1 billion in investment to HBCUs and African institutions. None of that began with a strategy document. It began with conversations, in living rooms, in church basements, over meals, in hotel lobbies, on phone calls that lasted longer than they were supposed to.

Your legacy is not what you build. Your legacy is who you build with. And you cannot build with people you never took the time to know.

The Invitation

So here is my challenge to you, and to myself: have the conversation you have been avoiding. Reach out to the person you have been meaning to call. Attend the event where you will know no one. Join the organization you have been observing from a distance. Travel to the place that makes you slightly uncomfortable. Ask a question instead of making a statement.

The cost of a conversation is small, a few minutes, a phone call, a meal, a handshake. The cost of never having it is everything you might have built, every door that might have opened, every life yours might have touched.

People do business with people they know. So make yourself known. And take the time to know others. That is how bridges are built. That is how legacies are forged. That is how communities are transformed, one conversation at a time.

You can study geography, read about history, examine economic development, and debate international relations from textbooks. But there comes a moment when you must close the book, board the aircraft, cross the ocean, and experience the world for yourself.

I have learned that travel is not simply about seeing the world, it is about allowing the world to change you!

Over the course of my career, my travels have taken me to over 40 countries around the world visiting several African nations: South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, The Gambia to other countries around the globe: Switzerland, the Netherlands, China, South Korea, Japan, and many other destinations. Each journey has expanded my understanding of humanity. Each passport stamp represents more than a destination. It represents a conversation, a meal, a business relationship, a friendship, a cultural exchange, a lesson in history, or an opportunity to serve.

And increasingly, I have come to believe that travel should be viewed as an investment in ourselves, our communities, and our shared humanity.

Travel Changes the Way You See People

One of the greatest benefits of international travel is that it challenges the assumptions we make about people we have never met.

It is easy to form opinions about countries, cultures, religions, and economies when our knowledge comes primarily from television, social media, or someone else’s interpretation. Then you arrive. You sit at a table with someone whose life looks completely different from yours. You hear their story. And you discover that their hopes for their children are remarkably similar to yours. Their desire for economic opportunity is familiar. Their concern for their community resonates. Their dreams may be expressed in a different language, but they are still dreams.

Travel has taught me that difference does not have to create distance. Difference can create curiosity. And curiosity can create connection.

That lesson has profoundly influenced the way I approach community service and international engagement.

From Traveler to Contributor

My international travels have also changed the way I understand service.

When you travel only as a tourist, you ask: What can I see?

But as your experiences deepen, another question emerges: What can I contribute?

That distinction matters.

My work in Africa has exposed me to extraordinary people, building businesses, educating young people, developing technology, strengthening institutions, creating jobs, and serving their communities, often with far fewer resources than many of us take for granted. Those experiences have strengthened my commitment to connecting people and institutions across borders.

They have helped inspire the Building Bridges Initiative, which seeks to create lasting relationships between Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States and institutions of higher learning across Africa and the Middle East. The concept is straightforward: if we want to build bridges between continents, we first have to be willing to cross them.

Travel has helped me understand that philanthropy, education, entrepreneurship, diplomacy, trade, and service do not have to operate in separate lanes. They reinforce one another. A student who studies abroad may become an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur may become an investor. An investor may create jobs. A professor may establish a research partnership. A researcher may develop a solution. And a traveler may return home with a completely different understanding of another culture and become an advocate for greater cooperation.

This is how travel becomes more than tourism. It becomes a catalyst for human development.

Travel Teaches Us to Celebrate Differences

One of the most beautiful things about traveling is discovering that there is no single way to live a meaningful life.

Food is different. Music is different. Architecture is different. Languages, religious traditions, business practices, family structures, all different. And yet, beneath all of those differences, we frequently discover something universal.

People want to be respected. Parents want opportunities for their children. Young people want to build meaningful lives. Communities want safety and prosperity. Entrepreneurs want the opportunity to build. Students want to learn. And people everywhere want to be seen and valued.

Travel gives us the opportunity to celebrate those differences rather than fear them. The world becomes much smaller when you realize that the person sitting across from you is not a stranger, they are another human being with a story.

Why Students Should Study Abroad

If I could encourage today’s students to make one investment beyond their formal education, it would be this: go abroad.

Study abroad if you can. Take an international internship. Participate in an academic exchange. Join a faculty-led delegation. Volunteer internationally. Learn another language. Spend time somewhere that challenges your assumptions.

A student who studies abroad doesn’t simply earn academic credit, they develop cultural intelligence. They learn to navigate unfamiliar environments. They become more adaptable and confident. They learn to communicate across cultural differences. They gain exposure to international careers and industries. And they begin to understand that their professional opportunities are not confined to the city, state, or country where they were born.

For HBCU students in particular, international exposure can be transformational. Historically Black Colleges and Universities have produced generations of leaders who have influenced America and the world. Imagine what happens when we combine that legacy with meaningful engagement with universities, governments, businesses, and communities across Africa and throughout the global community.

The classroom should not end at the campus boundary. The world should become an extension of the classroom.

Don’t Just Take a Vacation. Take a Journey.

There is nothing

wrong with relaxing on a beach or a wellness spa. We all need rest. But I would challenge travelers to occasionally exchange the familiar vacation for an unfamiliar journey.

Visit a museum. Take a walking tour. Eat where the locals eat. Visit a university. Meet an entrepreneur. Explore a market. Learn the history of the city. Attend a cultural performance. Visit a neighborhood outside the tourist district. Talk to people. Ask questions. Listen.

Your vacation may last seven days, but the perspective you gain can last a lifetime.

Some of my most meaningful travel experiences have not happened inside five-star hotels. They have happened in conversations with government officials, students, entrepreneurs, community leaders, educators, families, and ordinary citizens who welcomed me into their world. Those moments stay with you.

Travel Creates Economic Opportunity

There is another dimension to international travel that deserves far more attention: economic development.

Tourism is a major global industry, but international engagement extends far beyond hotels and airplanes. Travel can introduce us to hospitality, academia and research, cultural institutions, business and entrepreneurship, international trade, import and export opportunities, technology partnerships, real estate, foreign direct investment, philanthropy, and government and diplomatic relationships.

A traveler may discover a business opportunity. A business leader may identify a new market. A university may discover an international research partner. An investor may find a promising company. A philanthropist may discover a community with an urgent need. A student may discover a career.

This is why I believe travel should be included in conversations about economic development and global competitiveness. You cannot participate meaningfully in a global economy if you never experience the global economy.

Africa: See Beyond the Narrative

My travels throughout Africa have particularly influenced my thinking.

South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Morocco and The Gambia have each offered different perspectives on the continent. Africa is not one country. It is 54 countries, thousands of cultures and languages, hundreds of millions of people, extraordinary natural resources, dynamic cities, emerging industries, world-class universities, creative economies, and one of the world’s youngest populations.

The continent cannot, and should not, be reduced to a single narrative.

Travel allows you to experience the complexity for yourself. You begin to see both the challenges and the opportunities. You see where investment is needed and where innovation is already happening. You meet young people creating businesses. You discover universities producing talented graduates. You see communities preserving history and culture. And you recognize that the relationship between Africa and the global African diaspora can be far deeper than it has been.

Perhaps most importantly, you begin asking a different question: How can we build together?

Travel and the Responsibility of the Global Citizen

I believe that international travel comes with a responsibility. If we have the privilege to see the world, we should also develop the willingness to contribute to it.

That doesn’t mean every traveler needs to become a philanthropist. It means becoming a better global citizen. Support local businesses. Respect local customs. Hire local guides. Learn some of the language. Buy from local artisans. Pay fairly. Protect the environment. Respect sacred and historical places. Listen before judging. And when possible, return, not simply to consume, but to build relationships.

The most valuable souvenir may not be something you put in your suitcase. It may be a new perspective.

Preparing for International Travel

Good travel begins long before you arrive at the airport.

I recommend researching your destination carefully, passport and visa requirements, local laws, security conditions, weather, transportation, cultural customs, and emergency procedures. For health preparation, consult a physician or travel-medicine specialist well in advance. The CDC recommends doing this at least a month before travel, and its guidance notes that some destinations require or recommend specific vaccines or medications.

For travel to Africa, do not assume that vaccination requirements are the same from country to country. Yellow fever recommendations and entry requirements can vary, and malaria prevention may be recommended depending on your destination and itinerary. For example, the CDC currently recommends malaria medication for travelers to Senegal and Kenya, while yellow fever recommendations and entry rules differ by country and travel history.

Before departure, I recommend consulting:

· U.S. Department of State

· CDC Travelers’ Health

Check the specific destination pages for the countries you plan to visit. Do not rely on a generic “Africa travel” checklist — requirements and health considerations are destination-specific.

I also recommend making copies of your passport and important documents, securing appropriate travel insurance, keeping emergency contacts accessible, registering for relevant government travel alerts, and maintaining flexibility in your itinerary.

Prepare well so that you can travel confidently.

The World Is Waiting

My passport has taken me to many places, but the greatest value of travel has never been the number of countries I can say I have visited.

It has been the number of people I have met. The relationships I have built. The perspectives I have gained. The opportunities I have helped create. The communities I have been able to serve. And the realization that humanity is far more connected than geography sometimes suggests.

Travel has made me a better listener. A better community servant. A better businessperson. A better advocate. And, I believe, a better human being.

The world does not need more people who simply pass through it. It needs people who are willing to understand it, engage with it, invest in it, and contribute to it.

So if you have never traveled internationally, start planning. If you have only traveled for business, take a trip for culture. If you have only traveled for vacation, take a trip for learning. If you have only visited places that feel familiar, go somewhere that challenges you.

If you are a student, study abroad. If you are an entrepreneur, explore another market. If you are an investor, look beyond your traditional geography. If you are a philanthropist, listen to communities before deciding what they need.

And if you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel, don’t just see the world. Get to know it.

Because somewhere beyond the next border, airport, ocean, university, marketplace, museum, or village is an experience that may change the way you understand your place in the world.

Travel far. Listen deeply. Build relationships. Celebrate differences. And leave every place you visit a little better than you found it.

That, to me, is the true meaning of becoming a global citizen.

The world is not simply something to see. It is something to understand — and something we are all responsible for helping to build.

There is a place where two worlds meet. It is not marked on any map, but it exists in every nation, on every continent, and in every era of human progress. It is the crossroads where the academic and the entrepreneur converge, where the pursuit of knowledge meets the drive to build, where theory encounters application, and where the question “what is possible?” collides with the question “what can I bring to market?”

I have spent my career living at this crossroads. As an entrepreneur, I have built businesses from the ground up, restaurants, consulting firms, foundations. As a diplomat, serial entrepreneur and educator, I have worked with universities, governments, and international institutions across three continents. And I have learned that the most transformative work happens not in one world or the other, but in the space where they overlap.

The problem is that too often, they don’t. Academia and entrepreneurship operate in parallel universes, adjacent, aware of each other, but rarely integrated. The result is wasted potential: brilliant research that never reaches the people who need it, and ambitious ventures that fail because they lack the rigor and depth that academic inquiry provides.

This has to change. And the change begins with understanding the mindsets that drive each world and the power that emerges when we bring them together.

THE MINDSET OF THE ACADEMIC

The academic is driven by questions. Not the questions that lead to quick answers, but the questions that open new fields of inquiry. The academic asks: Why does this work? What are the underlying mechanisms? What does the data tell us? What has been proven, and what remains uncertain?

The academic mindset is rooted in rigor. It values methodology, peer review, replication, and intellectual honesty. It is comfortable with ambiguity, indeed, it embraces ambiguity as the starting point for discovery. The academic is patient by necessity, because breakthrough research cannot be rushed, and because the pursuit of truth is more important than the pursuit of a deadline.

I have sat with university presidents and deans across the United States, West Africa, and the Middle East. What I have found, universally, is a deep well of intellectual capital, research, data, frameworks, methodologies, that could transform industries, communities, and economies. But too often, that capital stays inside the walls of the institution. It gets published in journals that only other academics read. It gets presented at conferences that only other academics attend. It advances the field, yes, but it does not advance the world.

That is not a failure of the academic. That is a failure of the bridge between the academic and the entrepreneur.

As Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” But a weapon is only powerful when it is deployed. Knowledge that stays in the laboratory changes nothing until someone carries it into the marketplace.

THE MINDSET OF THE ENTREPRENEUR

The entrepreneur is driven by solutions. Not theoretical solutions, but practical ones solutions that work, that scale, that generate value, that solve real problems for real people. The entrepreneur asks: What does the market need? How can I build this? How can I make it faster, cheaper, better, more accessible? What is the business model that makes this sustainable?

The entrepreneur’s mindset is rooted in action. It values speed, iteration, customer feedback, and measurable outcomes. It is uncomfortable with ambiguity, not because it fears the unknown, but because it wants to resolve the unknown as quickly as possible and move forward. The entrepreneur is impatient by nature, because markets do not wait for perfection, and because the cost of inaction is often greater than the cost of imperfection.

I have been an entrepreneur my entire adult life. I built Supreme Foods Worldwide from a concept into a brand. I built Shamsid-Deen & Associates into an international consulting firm. I know what it means to move fast, take calculated risks, and pivot when the market tells you something you didn’t expect. The entrepreneur lives in the space between vision and execution, and the most successful ones understand that execution is everything.

But the entrepreneur’s weakness is the academic’s strength. When entrepreneurs operate without the depth of research, without the rigor of data, without the benefit of peer-reviewed insight, they build on shaky foundations. They launch products that the market doesn’t want. They scale models that aren’t sustainable. They solve problems that have already been solved, simply because they didn’t know the research existed.

Steve Jobs understood this intuitively. He said: “It is in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. It’s technology married with the liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.”

Jobs was not an academic. But he built the most valuable company in the world by standing at the crossroads, by insisting that technology serve human needs, that engineering be informed by design, and that innovation be grounded in an understanding of people, culture, and story. He married the entrepreneurial drive with the academic depth, and the world was transformed.

THE CROSSROADS: WHERE THEY MEET

Here is the truth that both sides need to hear: neither world is sufficient on its own.

Academia without entrepreneurship produces knowledge that changes nothing. Entrepreneurship without academia produces products that solve the wrong problems. But when the two converge, when the rigor of research meets the velocity of execution, you get something that neither could produce alone: innovation that is both groundbreaking and grounded, visionary and viable, transformative and sustainable.

Think of what Stanford University has done. Stanford alumni have founded more than 5,000 companies, creating trillions of dollars in economic value. The university does not just produce research, it produces entrepreneurs who carry that research into the world. MIT supports more than 30 startup spin-offs annually, each one taking academic discovery and converting it into market reality. These institutions understand that their role is not just to generate knowledge but to deploy it.

Or consider what is happening across Africa right now. The continent has more than 1,000 innovation hubs, in Lagos, Nairobi, Cape Town, Cairo, Casablanca, Abidjan, Dakar, Tunis. These hubs are where university-trained engineers and self-taught entrepreneurs sit side by side, building fintech platforms, agritech solutions, health tech innovations that serve markets the West has historically ignored. The most successful of these hubs are the ones with direct ties to local universities, where academic research feeds directly into entrepreneurial ventures.

This is the crossroads. And it is where the future is being built.

FROM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO IMPLEMENTATION

There is a well-known concept in innovation economics called the “valley of death.” It describes the gap between early-stage research and commercially viable products, the chasm where promising discoveries go to die because no one is willing to fund the transition from laboratory to marketplace.

This valley of death is the physical manifestation of the divide between academia and entrepreneurship. The academic produces the research. The entrepreneur could build the business. But between them lies a gap that neither is equipped to cross alone.

Bridging this gap requires intentional infrastructure:

1. Technology transfer offices that actually function — not just as patent repositories, but as bridges between faculty and founders.

2. University-based incubators and accelerators that give entrepreneurs access to faculty expertise, lab space, and student talent.

3. Joint venture models where universities take equity in companies born from their research, aligning institutional incentives with entrepreneurial success.

4. Government funding that specifically targets the translation gap, the space between discovery and deployment.

5. Corporate partnerships that bring market intelligence into the research process early, so that academic inquiry is shaped by real-world needs from the beginning.

The UNCF recognized this when it launched its Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Initiative, a collaborative program designed to build STEM entrepreneurship capacity across HBCUs. The HBCU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Collaborative brought together 15 institutions committed to fostering innovation ecosystems on their campuses. These are exactly the right instincts. But they need to be scaled, funded, and connected to the global marketplace.

This is not just an American challenge. When I meet with ministers of education in Senegal, Sierra Leone, or The Gambia, I hear the same need: universities producing graduates who cannot find work because their education was not connected to the economic ecosystem around them. The solution is not to abandon academia — it is to connect it to entrepreneurship, so that graduates leave university not just with knowledge but with the ability to convert that knowledge into value.

HARNESSING THE COLLECTIVE

The most powerful word in this conversation is not “academic” or “entrepreneur.” It is “collective.”

No single institution, no single researcher, no single founder has everything they need. The academic has the research but not the market access. The entrepreneur has the market access but not the research. The university has the talent but not the capital. The investor has the capital but not the pipeline. The government has the mandate but not the agility.

Harnessing the collective means bringing all of these actors into the same room and aligning their incentives. It means university presidents sitting with venture capitalists. It means faculty researchers sitting with industry partners. It means government ministers sitting with student founders. It means HBCUs sitting with African universities, and African universities sitting with GCC investors, and all of them sitting with the entrepreneurs who will carry their ideas into the world.

This is what the Building Bridges Initiative was designed to do. Not to create another conference or another white paper, but to build the connective tissue between institutions that should be working together but too often are not. When we bring HBCU presidents to Senegal and The Gambia to meet with ministers of education and university leaders, we are not just facilitating tourism. We are building the relationships that make collaboration possible — the kind of collaboration that produces joint research, student exchange, faculty mobility, and yes, entrepreneurial ventures that span continents.

Helen Keller said: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” She was not speaking about academia and entrepreneurship specifically, but she might as well have been. The collective is where the power lives.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THEORY AND APPLICATION

Let me be concrete about what this looks like in practice.

In agriculture, academic research on drought-resistant crops means nothing if it stays in a journal. But when that research is connected to an entrepreneur who can distribute improved seeds to farmers, build supply chains, and create market access, you have food security. That is theory becoming application. That is a journal article feeding a family.

In technology, academic research on cybersecurity protocols means nothing if it stays in a lab. But when that research is connected to an entrepreneur who can build a product, serve a market, and protect critical infrastructure, you have digital security. That is theory becoming application. That is a lab bench protecting a nation.

In education, academic research on learning science means nothing if it stays in a textbook. But when that research is connected to an entrepreneur who can build a platform, reach students, and measure outcomes, you have transformed learning. That is theory becoming application. That is a dissertation teaching a child.

The gap between theory and application is not a gap of intelligence. It is a gap of infrastructure, relationships, and intentionality. It is a gap that can be closed, but only by people who understand both sides and are willing to build the bridge.

THE IMPLEMENTATION GLOBALLY

What I am describing is not an American phenomenon. It is a global imperative.

In the United States, HBCUs are positioned to lead this convergence. They have the intellectual capital, the community trust, and the cultural mandate to produce both scholars and founders. What they need is the infrastructure, the funding, and the partnerships to scale.

In West Africa, universities like the College of Human Resource Development in Sierra Leone are producing graduates who could transform their nation’s economy — if those graduates had access to entrepreneurial ecosystems, investment capital, and connection to global markets.

In the Middle East, the GCC nations are investing billions in education and innovation. Qatar Foundation’s partnership with universities, the UAE’s innovation hubs, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 these are all expressions of the same truth: that the future belongs to the societies that can generate knowledge and convert it into economic value.

The implementation globally requires three things:

1. Cross-border university partnerships that facilitate joint research, student exchange, and faculty mobility — so that knowledge flows across borders as easily as capital does.

2. Entrepreneurial ecosystems connected to universities — incubators, accelerators, venture funds, and corporate partnerships that sit alongside academic departments, not separate from them.

3. Intentional bridge-building by people who understand both worlds — diplomats, foundation leaders, investors, and educators who can translate between the language of the academy and the language of the market.

This is the work. This is the mission. And it is urgent.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HARNESSING BOTH

I will close with this thought.

The academic and the entrepreneur are not opposites. They are complements. The academic asks the questions that the entrepreneur turns into products. The entrepreneur builds the markets that fund the academic’s next line of inquiry. The academic provides the depth; the entrepreneur provides the scale. The academic provides the rigor; the entrepreneur provides the reach.

When we separate them, we get ivory towers and empty markets. When we bring them together, we get innovation that changes lives.

I have seen this in my own work. The Supreme Family Foundation does not just fund scholarships. It builds bridges between universities and entrepreneurs, between researchers and investors, between the diaspora and the continent. Building Bridges is not just a name, it is a methodology. It is the practice of standing at the crossroads and refusing to let the two worlds remain apart.

The institutions that will lead the next century are not the ones with the most research or the most startups. They are the ones that have figured out how to connect the two — how to turn knowledge into enterprise and enterprise into knowledge, in a continuous loop that serves humanity.

That is the crossroads of innovation. And it is where I intend to spend the rest of my career standing.

Last week at UNITE 2026, I made the case for HBCUs on the global stage. Now I am putting that case into action.

In March 2027, the Supreme Family Foundation will lead a delegation of HBCU presidents, development directors, and academic deans to Senegal and The Gambia for a 10 Day of high-level diplomatic engagement, institutional partnership building, and cultural exchange. The delegation is part of the Building Bridges Initiative — our global platform connecting HBCUs with universities, governments, and investors across Africa and the Middle East.

I am announcing the delegation now, from Atlanta, because I believe the moment demands it. The conversations at UNITE last week confirmed what I have felt for the past two years: HBCU leaders are ready to go global. What they need is the infrastructure, the access, and the opportunity to step into that space with confidence and with partners already waiting on the other side.

This delegation is that opportunity.

The Vision

The Building Bridges Initiative was founded on a vision that I have spoken about often: one million students to the African continent, one billion dollars raised for HBCU advancement, and a generation of global leaders shaped by cross-cultural exchange, research collaboration, and economic diplomacy.

Those numbers are not aspirational. They are operational. But they require a starting point, a first wave of institutions willing to lead, willing to travel, and willing to build the relationships that will generate the partnerships, the funding, and the programs that follow.

The 2027 delegation is a continuation of last years delegation where we met over 35 universities and executed MOU building bridges between FAMU and Universities in Senegal and The Gambia.

What the Delegation Will Do

This is not a tour. This is not a photo opportunity. This is a working delegation with a clear agenda and measurable outcomes.

We will meet with the Ministers of Education for Senegal and The Gambia. These are not courtesy calls. They are structured policy discussions focused on institutional partnerships, student exchange frameworks, joint research programs, and workforce development initiatives.

We will tour universities and educational institutions in both countries, with facilitated meetings between HBCU representatives and their African counterparts. The goal is to connect, to establish the relationships that will lead to signed MOUs, faculty exchanges, and joint programs.

We will engage with government officials, private sector leaders, and diaspora investors to explore funding, partnership, and investment opportunities for HBCUs. The delegation is designed to produce tangible outcomes: partnerships established, funding identified, and frameworks put in place that will continue long after the trip ends.

We will participate in cultural site visits and community engagements that deepen the connection between the diaspora and the continent, because relationships built on shared history and shared humanity are the ones that endure.

And we will build lasting bridges between participating institutions and African universities, with the framework for formal MOUs, faculty exchange, and joint research established during the trip itself.

Who Should Join

The delegation is intentionally limited to 20 members. This is not scarcity for scarcity’s sake. It is by design. A smaller group ensures meaningful access, personal engagement, and the quality of conversation that comes with a focused delegation. Twenty people can sit around a table with a minister of education. Two hundred cannot.

Each participating institution may send up to five representatives. I am inviting three categories of leaders:

1. HBCU Presidents and Senior Leaders: to build institutional relationships at the highest level. These are the people who can sign MOUs, commit to partnerships, and set institutional direction.

2. Development Directors and Chief Advancement Officers: to identify funding, partnership, and investment opportunities. These are the people who will carry the relationships back home and turn them into programs, grants, and sustainable revenue streams.

3. Academic Deans: particularly in agriculture, technology, business, public health, education, and international affairs. These are the people who will build the faculty partnerships, the joint research programs, and the student exchange frameworks that make the collaboration real.

If you are a president, ask yourself: does my institution have a global strategy? If not, this delegation is the beginning of one. If yes, this delegation will accelerate it.

If you are a development director, ask yourself: am I tapping into international funding streams? If not, this delegation will introduce you to them. If yes, this delegation will deepen your access.

If you are a dean, ask yourself: are my faculty and students connected to the continent? If not, this delegation will build the bridge. If yes, this delegation will strengthen it.

Total cost per participant: $12,500. This includes international airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, all official meetings and events, cultural programming, translation services, and most meals.

Why This Matters Now

I will be direct.

The window for HBCUs to position themselves as America’s bridge to Africa is open, but it will not stay open forever. The GCC nations are already investing. China has been there for two decades. European institutions are re-engaging. The partnerships being formed right now, in 2026 and 2027, will shape the next twenty years of African higher education.

HBCUs can be at that table, or they can read about it later. They can be the partners that African institutions choose, or they can be the ones who were not in the room when the decisions were made.

I know which I would choose. And I believe the leaders I met with this week at UNITE are ready to make that same choice.

What I Told UNITE

At UNITE 2026, I said that the 20th century was about civil rights and the 21st century must be about global rights. I meant it. The right of every HBCU student to access the world. The right of every African institution to partner with the best of America. The right of every diaspora community to be connected to the continent.

The 2027 delegation is how we begin to make those rights real. Twenty seats. Two nations. One week. And the beginning of partnerships that will outlast all of us.

I do not want to build a program. I want to build a movement. And movements start with people who are willing to show up.

I have been to many conferences. I have spoken at many podiums. But this one felt different. Because the question I came to answer is not the one most people are asking.

Most conversations about HBCUs focus, rightly, on domestic challenges: funding gaps, enrollment, infrastructure, federal policy, student support. These are real, urgent, and deserving of every dollar and every hour we can give them. But there is a dimension to the HBCU story that is too often left out of the conversation, and it is the dimension I came to UNITE 2026 to elevate.

The future of HBCUs is not only domestic. It is global.

And the opportunity is not in the future. It is now.

The Argument I Came to Make

My presentation focused on a single, evidence-based argument: HBCUs are uniquely positioned to serve as America’s bridge to the African continent and the broader developing world, and the institutions that recognize this and act on it first will be the ones that define the next era of HBCU excellence.

Here is the case in three parts.

Part One: The World Is Investing in Africa

The Gulf Cooperation Council nations: Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, are investing hundreds of billions in African infrastructure, education, and economic development. Qatar Foundation has already established partnerships with US universities. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 includes massive investments in African mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. The UAE is one of the largest foreign investors in Africa. These nations are not just funding projects. They are building relationships, aligning economies, and shaping the future of a continent that will hold 25 percent of the world’s population by 2050.

China has been in Africa for two decades. The European Union is re-engaging. Turkey, India, and Brazil are all expanding their African footprints.

The question is: where is America? And more specifically: where are America’s HBCUs?

Part Two: HBCUs Have a Unique Diplomatic Asset

HBCUs have something that no other American institutions possess: a natural, historical, and cultural connection to the African continent. Our students are the descendants of the diaspora. Our institutions were born from the same struggle for dignity and self-determination that shaped post-colonial Africa. Our academic traditions carry a commitment to community, service, and uplift that resonates deeply with African universities and governments.

When an HBCU delegation walks into a meeting with a minister of education in Senegal or The Gambia, it is not a foreign delegation. It is a homecoming. The dynamic is different. The trust is different. The possibility is different.

No Ivy League institution, no matter how well-funded, can replicate that. It is a strategic advantage that HBCUs have not fully leveraged, and that the global market has not fully recognized.

Part Three: The Economic Case Is Provable

This is not sentiment. This is economics.

When HBCUs build international partnerships, five things happen:

1. They attract new funding streams, from foreign governments, diaspora investors, and international development agencies that want to work through trusted US institutions.

2. They expand student opportunity, study abroad, international internships, and global research collaborations that make HBCU graduates more competitive in a globalized economy.

3. They create research revenue, joint grants, international co-publications, and shared intellectual property that generate income and raise institutional prestige.

4. They build enrollment pipelines, African students, Middle Eastern students, and diaspora students who want the HBCU experience and are willing to pay international tuition rates.

5. They position the institution for philanthropic investment, donors and foundations increasingly want to fund institutions with global vision and global impact, not just domestic programs.

The institutions that move first will capture the early-mover advantage. The ones that wait will be competing for the same domestic funding pool while their peers are tapping into a global one.

What I Told the Room

I told the room what I have learned from thirty years of doing this work:

That I have sat with university presidents in Sierra Leone who are desperate for partnerships with US institutions, and who have been overlooked because the conversation always goes to Harvard, Stanford, or MIT. These are brilliant, committed educators leading institutions that serve thousands of students with almost nothing. They want HBCU partners. They want partners who understand their context, their history, and their ambition.

That I have met with GCC investors who are actively looking for US educational partners to channel their philanthropy, and who are drawn to the HBCU story because it mirrors the values they hold: faith, community, resilience, and the transformative power of education. Qatar is already the largest foreign funder of US education. The Qatar Foundation has partnered with Hampton and Xavier. There is appetite. There is capital. There is a willingness to build. But the pipeline of HBCU partnerships is not yet large enough to absorb it.

That I have worked with government ministers across West Africa who see HBCUs as the ideal partners for workforce development, technology transfer, and faculty exchange, because HBCUs produce graduates who understand both the American context and the African one, and who can build bridges between the two.

And that I have seen, with my own eyes, what happens when these connections are made. When an HBCU student travels to Senegal and walks into a university classroom where the professor looks like them, speaks like them, and shares their intellectual tradition — something shifts. The student does not come back the same. They come back as a bridge. As a connector. As someone who carries both worlds inside them and can translate between the two.

That is the product HBCUs can offer the world: graduates who are not just educated but globally connected, culturally fluent, and positioned to lead in a world where borders matter less and relationships matter more.

The Response

What I heard back, in hallways, over meals, in follow-up conversations, was encouraging. Presidents and deans told me they have been thinking about international expansion but did not know where to start. Development directors told me they have donors asking about global programs but no framework to offer them. Faculty members told me they have research ideas that require international collaboration but no institutional infrastructure to support it.

The appetite is there. The question is infrastructure.

That is where the Building Bridges Initiative comes in. We are not asking HBCUs to build this alone. We are building the bridge, the relationships, the frameworks, the institutional connections, and the delegation model, so that HBCUs can step into the global arena with support, with strategy, and with partners already at the table.

The Call to Action

I closed my presentation with this:

The 20th century was about civil rights. The 21st century must be about global rights, the right of every HBCU student to access the world, the right of every African institution to partner with the best of America, and the right of every diaspora community to be connected to the continent that gave it life.

HBCUs have always been at the forefront of expanding what is possible. They were at the forefront of Reconstruction. They were at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. They were at the forefront of building the Black middle class. And now, they must be at the forefront of building the bridge between America and Africa, between the diaspora and the continent, between the HBCU campus and the global marketplace.

This is not a new mission. It is the original mission, expanded. It is the same commitment to education, opportunity, and uplift, now applied to a world that is smaller, more connected, and more full of possibility than ever before.

UNITE 2026 showed me that the HBCU community is ready for this conversation. My job, our job, is to make sure the conversation becomes action.

There’s a saying many of us grew up hearing: “Fake it till you make it.” I’ve never been a fan of the word “fake” but the underlying principle is sound. When you dress the part, you begin to feel the part. When you feel the part, you begin to act the part. And when you act the part long enough, you become it.

Dress is not vanity. Dress is strategy. It is the first language you speak before you say a word. The way you present yourself tells the world how you expect to be treated, how seriously you take the moment, and how much respect you have, for yourself and for the people in the room.

Over thirty years of walking into boardrooms, diplomatic receptions, presidential palaces, and neighborhood meetings, I’ve learned that clothing is not about impressing others. It is about positioning yourself in a space of success, internally and externally. When you look the part, your posture changes. Your voice carries differently. Your thinking sharpens. You walk into a room not as a visitor but as someone who belongs. And belonging, in its truest sense, is half the battle.

THE LANGUAGE OF DRESS CODES

One of the most common questions I get from young professionals and entrepreneurs is: “What do I wear?” The confusion is understandable. We’ve blurred the lines between formal and casual so much that many people no longer know what the terms mean, or when each applies.

Let’s break it down:

Formal / Black Tie This is the highest level of dress. For men: a tuxedo, black bow tie, formal dress shirt, patent leather shoes. For women: a floor-length gown or formal evening suit. This is the Met Gala. The Consular Ball. A state dinner. When the invitation says “black tie,” it is not a suggestion. It is a signal that the evening carries weight, and your attire should match that weight.

Formal / White Tie: Even more elevated than black tie. For men: a tailcoat, white bow tie, white pique shirt, patent shoes. For women: a ball gown. This is rare in American contexts but common at European state functions and certain diplomatic ceremonies. If you ever receive a white tie invitation, understand: you are being honored.

Business Formal: A well-tailored suit, dress shirt, tie (for men), and polished leather shoes. For women: a tailored suit, professional dress, or skirt-and-blazer combination. This is what I wear to meetings with ministers of education, heads of state, and investment partners. It says: I came prepared. I respect your time. I take this seriously.

Business Casual: A blazer with dress slacks or a collared shirt with tailored trousers. No tie required, but still polished. This is the sweet spot for day-to-day professional meetings, conferences, and most office environments. The mistake many make with business casual is treating it as a license to be sloppy. It is not. “Casual” modifies “business” the business part comes first.

Smart Casual: A step below business casual but still intentional. Dark jeans with a blazer, a crisp button-down without a tie, clean leather shoes or high-quality loafers. This works for dinners, networking events, and creative industry settings. The key word is “smart” thought-through, deliberate.

Dress Down / Casual: This is where discipline matters most. Even in a casual setting, there is a difference between relaxed and unkempt. Clean, well-fitted clothing. No stains, no wrinkles, no offensive graphics. You can be comfortable and still look like someone who respects themselves.

Cocktail: For men: a dark suit, no tie, dress shirt, leather shoes. For women: a cocktail dress, elegant separates, or a dressy jumpsuit. Cocktail attire sits between business formal and black tie, elegant but not full evening wear. This is common at fundraising galas, evening receptions, and social-professional events.

The principle across all of these is the same: dress for the occasion, but dress at the top of the occasion. If the invitation says “business casual,” lean toward business. If it says “cocktail,” lean toward elegant. Never be the person who underdressed. It is always better to be slightly overdressed than to wish you had dressed better.

THE PSYCHOLOGY: HOW YOU LOOK CHANGES HOW YOU THINK

This is not just my opinion. Science confirms it.

In 2012, researchers at Northwestern University coined the term “enclothed cognition” the systematic influence that clothing has on the wearer’s psychological processes. In their landmark study, participants who wore a white lab coat performed significantly better on attention-related tasks than those who did not. But here’s the critical detail: the improvement only happened when the participants were told the coat was a doctor’s coat, not a painter’s coat. The symbolic meaning of the clothing, not just the physical garment, drove the cognitive improvement.

In other words, what you wear changes how you think. The lab coat made them more attentive. The suit makes you more authoritative. The traditional garment makes you more connected to your heritage. The well-fitted outfit makes you more confident.

I’ve felt this myself. When I put on a tailored suit before a meeting with a foreign minister, I am not just dressing for them. I am dressing for the version of myself that needs to show up in that room. The suit is not armor, it is alignment. It aligns my internal state with the external moment.

As the research shows: people perform better when they dress for the role they want, not just the role they have.

THE BILLIONAIRE PARADOX: THE WEALTHIEST OFTEN DRESS THE SIMPLEST

Here’s a paradox worth sitting with: some of the wealthiest people in the world dress the most casually.

Steve Jobs built Apple in a black turtleneck, jeans, and New Balance sneakers. Mark Zuckerberg runs Meta in a gray t-shirt and hoodie. Warren Buffett, one of the richest men alive, drives himself to the office in a modest car wearing unremarkable suits. Jeff Bezos, before his transformation into a media mogul, was known for khakis and a polo.

Why? Because when you have nothing to prove, you stop performing. The billionaire in the t-shirt is not dressing down out of laziness, he is dressing down out of power. He has already arrived. The room knows who he is. The t-shirt says: “I don’t need this suit to command this room. My presence does that.”

Now contrast that with the person who is stressed, overworked, and financially stretched. Often, that person dresses the loudest. The designer logos. The conspicuous consumption. The overdetermined outfit that screams: “Please believe I belong here.” It is a performance of confidence rather than the real thing.

I’m not saying expensive clothes are a sign of insecurity. I’m saying the need to be seen in them often is. There is a difference between wearing something because it is excellent and wearing something because you are afraid of what happens if you don’t.

The lesson here is not to dress poorly. The lesson is to dress authentically. When your clothing is an expression of who you are rather than a compensation for who you are not, you have reached the highest level of dress.

Tom Ford, one of the greatest designers of our era, said it plainly: “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” Not showing off. Not peacocking. Good manners. Respect for the moment, for the host, for the room, and for yourself.

Giorgio Armani captured another dimension: “Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered.”

REPRESENTING YOUR NATION: THE POWER OF INTERNATIONAL DRESS

Every year in Atlanta, Georgia, the international community gathers for the International Consular Ball. It is one of the city’s most elegant and meaningful traditions, a celebration of the consular corps, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. The dress code on the invitation reads: “Black tie or national dress.”

And that phrase “national dress” is where the evening transforms from formal to extraordinary.

Across the globe, I have watched diplomats from Nigeria walk in wearing agbada, flowing, embroidered robes in brilliant whites and golds. I have seen representatives from India in sherwanis that carry centuries of craftsmanship. Japanese consuls in kimono. South African dignitaries in Madiba shirts. Moroccan representatives in kaftans of deep jewel tones. Ethiopian delegates in habesha kemis, the white cotton with the vividly embroidered borders that tell a story before a word is spoken.

Each outfit is more than fabric. It is a flag worn not on a pole but on a body. It says: I come from somewhere. My people have a history. My culture has beauty, and I carry it with me wherever I go.

At the United Nations General Assembly, this has become increasingly common. African delegates, in particular, have used fashion as a form of soft power, wearing traditional attire to global forums not as costume but as statement. A Nigerian delegate in a flawlessly tailored baban riga is not making a fashion choice. He is making a diplomatic one. He is saying: Western business attire is not the only language of seriousness. My culture has its own language of gravity and authority, and it belongs at this table.

I have worn African traditional attire in diplomatic settings from Freetown to Doha. I have worn a suits to the Consular Ball and to meetings with investors in Dubai. The choice is never random. It is always intentional.

When you represent your nation, whether you are a diplomat, a business leader, an educator, or a cultural ambassador, your dress is a form of communication. It can bridge a gap or reinforce one. It can signal humility or hubris. It can say “I respect your culture” or “I expect you to respect mine” and ideally, it says both.

The most powerful move I have seen in international dress is this: wearing the host country’s traditional attire when visiting. When a Western head of state arrives in an African nation wearing a locally made garment, it says more than any press release ever could. It says: I see you. I honor you. I am not above your culture; I am honored by it.

HOW CULTURE SHAPES DRESS AROUND THE GLOBE

Dress is culture made visible. Every garment carries the story of the people who created it.

In West Africa, the agbada, boubou, and grand boubou are not just clothing, they are markers of status, occasion, and identity. The embroidery pattern, the fabric choice, the color: all communicate something specific. To wear a grand boubou to a naming ceremony or a wedding is to honor the moment with the full weight of tradition.

In East Africa, the kanzu in Uganda, the kikoy and kanga in Kenya and Tanzania, these are garments that carry proverbs, political messages, and social meanings printed directly into the fabric. The cloth speaks.

In the Middle East, the thobe, kandura, and bisht signal not just nationality but rank, occasion, and regional identity. A white bisht trimmed in gold over a thobe at a GCC state function communicates authority and heritage simultaneously. The headwear — ghutra, shemagh, agal carries its own code of meaning.

In South Asia, the sherwani, kurta, and sari are centuries-deep traditions of craftsmanship. A wedding sherwani in India can take months to create, with hand embroidery that tells a family’s story. The sari is perhaps the most versatile garment in the world, a single piece of cloth worn in dozens of regional styles, each one a signature of place and heritage.

In East Asia, the kimono, hanbok, and cheongsam have moved from daily wear to ceremonial dress and in doing so, have become more powerful, not less. A Japanese woman wearing a kimono to a formal event is not being nostalgic. She is being intentional.

In Western business culture, the suit has become the global default and that carries both opportunity and risk. The opportunity is universality: a well-tailored suit is understood in every boardroom from New York to Nairobi. The risk is homogenization: when everyone dresses the same, culture flattens. That is why the movement toward national dress at international events is so important. It pushes back against the idea that there is only one way to look serious, professional, or powerful.

The world is richer when a Ghanaian delegate wears kente. When a Saudi prince wears a bisht. When a Korean dignitary wears a hanbok. When an HBCU president wears a dashiki to a diplomatic reception. These are not costumes. They are declarations.

THE PRINCIPLES THAT UNDERPIN IT ALL

After decades of observation, I’ve landed on a few principles that I believe apply regardless of the occasion, the culture, or the dress code:

1. Dress for respect, not for attention. If people remember your outfit but not your words, you have failed. The goal is to be remembered for your substance, with your appearance supporting that substance not competing with it.

2. Fit is everything. A $200 suit that fits perfectly will always outperform a $5,000 suit that doesn’t. Tailoring is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Find a good tailor and build a relationship with them.

3. Dress for the version of yourself that the moment requires. Before a negotiation, a speech, or a meeting, ask: Who do I need to be in that room? Then dress that person into existence.

4. When in doubt, dress up. You can always remove a tie, unbutton a jacket, or roll up sleeves. You cannot add formality to an outfit that is already too casual for the setting.

5. Authenticity outranks fashion. The most stylish person in any room is the one who is most completely themselves. Fashion follows. Authenticity leads.

6. Dress is diplomacy. In international settings, what you wear communicates respect or the lack of it. Choose with intention.

7. Take care of your clothes, and they will take care of you. Clean shoes. Pressed shirts. No loose threads. The details signal discipline, and discipline signals competence.

IN CLOSING

I was raised to believe that how you present yourself is a reflection of how you value yourself. Not in a material sense, but in a sense of dignity. Clean. Pressed. Intentional. Even with little, have pride, and pride shows in how you carry yourselves.

The world will make assumptions about you before you open your mouth. That is not fair, but it is real. What you can control is what those assumptions are. When you dress with intention, you are not surrendering to judgment, you are directing it. You are telling the world who you are before it decides for you.

“Fake it till you make it” works because the faking is not deception. It is rehearsal. You are rehearsing the version of yourself that you intend to become. And dress is the first line in that script.

So the next time you have a meeting that matters, an event that carries weight, or a moment where you need to show up fully take the time. Choose the outfit. Iron the shirt. Polish the shoes. Put on whatever makes you feel like the person the moment requires you to be.

Then walk in. Not as a visitor. As someone who belongs.

Because you do.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will convene UNITE 2026, the nation’s most influential gathering of historically Black colleges and universities, at the Signia by Hilton in Atlanta, Georgia. Presidents, provosts, scholars, donors, and advocates from across the country will gather for five days of bold conversation about the future of Black higher education. I am honored to be among them.

But I am not going simply to listen. I am going because I have something to say, and because my colleague, Dr. Yolanda Watson Spiva, President of Complete College America, and I have been given the platform to say it!

The Building Bridges Initiative

For the past several years, I have been building something I believe will reshape the relationship between Black America and the African continent for generations. It is called the “Building Bridges” Initiative.

The vision is simple in its articulation and sweeping in its ambition: connect HBCUs to universities, governments, and cultural institutions across Africa and the Middle East. Create pathways for student exchange, joint research, faculty collaboration, and economic partnership. Build a generation of Black scholars and leaders who do not merely study Africa from a textbook, but who walk its soil, sit in its classrooms, build relationships with its institutions, and understand from the inside what it means to belong to a global diaspora with a shared future.

Dr. Watson Spiva has been a vital partner in this work. She understands, as I do, that the future of HBCUs cannot be confined to American campuses. Our students deserve a global education. Our universities deserve global partners. And the African continent deserves the talent, energy, and investment that the diaspora can provide.

Know Where You Come From

Before we can build bridges, we must know where we come from. That is why I am proud to partner with African Ancestry, the only DNA service that traces African ancestry back to a specific present-day country and ethnic group. Not a percentage estimate. Not a broad regional label. A country. A tribe. A people.

For those of us in the diaspora, this matters more than most people realize. The transatlantic slave trade stripped us of our names, our languages, our histories, and our geographic identity. African Ancestry gives that back, not as a metaphor, but as a fact. When a young person learns that their maternal line traces back to the Temne people of Sierra Leone, or the Yoruba of Nigeria, or the Mandinka of Senegal, something shifts. They are no longer a displaced person. They are a returning one.

I encourage every person of African descent reading this to take that step. Get tested. Know your roots. And then visit the continent.

The One Million Student Pledge

This is where the vision gets concrete.

Through the Building Bridges Initiative, we are committing to a bold pledge: send one million students from the African diaspora to the African continent over the next seven to ten years. Not as tourists passing through. Not as photo opportunities. As scholars, researchers, cultural ambassadors, entrepreneurs, and future leaders who go with purpose and return with perspective.

Here is what that means in practice:

1. Every student gets a passport. For too many of our young people, the passport is the first barrier. We intend to remove it.

2. Every student traces their DNA through African Ancestry — so they arrive knowing not just that they are African, but where in Africa they are from.

3. Every student takes the Building Bridges Pledge — a personal commitment to visit the continent for tourism, cultural exchange, distance learning, second home exploration, or long-term partnership.

4. Every student returns with a story, a relationship, and a reason to go back.

Now imagine the impact over seven to ten years.

One million young people of African descent who have walked the streets of Accra, Dakar, Lagos, Freetown, and Banjul. One million who have sat in lecture halls at the University of Ghana or Fourah Bay College. One million who have built friendships across oceans, launched businesses across borders, and begun to reverse the brain drain that has historically flowed one direction.

The economic impact alone would be transformative in diaspora communities and on the continent. But the cultural and spiritual impact would be something that cannot be measured in dollars. It would be measured in identity, in belonging, in the restoration of a connection that was never supposed to be severed.

Among those contributions, the legacy of African Americans stands as one of the most profound examples of perseverance becoming progress and struggle becoming innovation.

From the earliest days of the republic to today’s global economy, African Americans have shaped nearly every aspect of American life while influencing cultures and economies around the world.

Our story is one of survival, leadership, invention and inspiration through our pursuit of happiness. Our story is a story that continues to unfold despite the challenges and the plight.

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, remembering the contributions of African Americans is not simply an exercise in history, it is an affirmation of truth. A nation that remembers all of its builders is stronger than one that remembers only a few or a nation that wishes to erase.

From Bondage to Builders

Few people in history have contributed so much while being asked to overcome so much.

For centuries, African Americans helped build America’s infrastructure, cultivated its agricultural economy, defended its freedoms in every major military conflict, and strengthened its democratic institutions.

Yet despite systemic barriers, the community refused to allow adversity to define its future.

Instead, it transformed obstacles into opportunity.

That determination became one of America’s greatest competitive advantages.

Science and Innovation

African American scientists, inventors, physicians, engineers, and researchers have changed the way the world lives.

Their discoveries have advanced medicine, telecommunications, transportation, aerospace, agriculture, environmental science, and countless other fields.

Innovators like George Washington Carver revolutionized sustainable agriculture.

Garrett Morgan developed innovations that improved transportation safety.

Today, African American researchers continue making breakthroughs in biotechnology, cybersecurity, robotics, artificial intelligence, public health, and space exploration.

Innovation has never had one face. Innovation has had many.

Technology and the Digital Economy

The future is increasingly digital, and African Americans are helping build that future.

From software engineering and artificial intelligence to fintech, cybersecurity, cloud computing, digital media, and entrepreneurship, Black innovators continue to create technologies that improve lives across continents.

The next generation is no longer asking for permission to innovate, they are creating the global future.

Fashion, Design, and Culture

Few communities have influenced global culture more profoundly.

African American creativity has reshaped fashion, music, literature, architecture, film, design, and entertainment.

What begins in neighborhoods across America often becomes global culture.

Styles become movements, music becomes diplomacy, language becomes influence and creativity becomes commerce.

The world wears Black American fashion and celebrates Black American Culture & Creativity.

Sports as Global Diplomacy

Athletics have become one of America’s greatest cultural exports.

African American athletes have inspired generations through excellence, discipline, perseverance, and leadership.

Their influence extends well beyond championships.

Many have become philanthropists, entrepreneurs, educators, and global ambassadors.

Education and Academic Leadership

Education has long been viewed within the African American community as both liberation and responsibility.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) continue producing doctors, lawyers, engineers, diplomats, educators, military officers, entrepreneurs, and public servants whose influence extends around the world.

Knowledge remains one of our greatest exports.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Those words continue to guide educators, students, and leaders who understand that education is not merely about earning degrees, it is about developing character capable of transforming communities and nations.

Politics, Public Service, and Leadership

African Americans have strengthened America’s democracy through service at every level of government.

They have served as legislators, judges, cabinet officials, ambassadors, military leaders, governors, mayors, and presidents.

Their leadership has expanded voting rights, civil rights, educational opportunities, healthcare access, economic development, and international cooperation.

Public service remains one of the highest expressions of patriotism.

Business and Entrepreneurship

African American entrepreneurs continue generating billions in economic activity while creating jobs and strengthening communities.

Across technology, finance, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, food service, agriculture, media, and international trade, Black-owned businesses demonstrate that entrepreneurship remains one of the strongest pathways toward generational wealth.

Economic empowerment is about more than profit.

It is about ownership, opportunity, job creation and legacy.

Global Leadership

The influence of African Americans extends well beyond America’s borders.

Business leaders invest throughout Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Scientists collaborate internationally.

Artists inspire global audiences.

Educators build international partnerships.

Diplomats strengthen relationships between nations.

Nonprofit organizations address humanitarian challenges across continents.

Our voice carries because our history has prepared us to understand resilience, diversity, innovation, and hope.

These are qualities the world needs today.

Garvey’s words remind us that understanding our history is not about dwelling in the past. It is about drawing strength from it as we shape the future.

America’s Greatest Strength Is Its Diversity

As America celebrates 250 years, this is not merely the celebration of one people.

It is the celebration of many people becoming one nation, America.

Native Americans.

European immigrants.

African Americans.

Latino communities.

Asian Americans.

Pacific Islanders.

Middle Eastern communities.

And countless others whose dreams became part of the American promise.

Every generation has added another chapter.

Every community has strengthened the nation.

Every voice matters as we are all American and a part of a global humanity.

The Next 250 Years

The question before us is no longer what African Americans have contributed.

History has already answered that.

The real question is what we will contribute next.

Will we lead breakthroughs in artificial intelligence?

Will we transform healthcare?

Will we expand international trade?

Will we strengthen democracy?

Will we educate the next generation of global citizens?

Will we deepen partnerships between America, Africa, and the global community?

I believe we will.

Because our history has prepared us for this moment.

Our resilience has become wisdom.

Our struggle has become strength.

Our creativity has become innovation.

Our faith has become leadership.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, let us honor not only the founders of this nation but also the millions of African Americans whose labor, sacrifice, intellect, courage, and vision have helped shape America into a beacon of innovation, culture, democracy, and opportunity for the world.

Our story is America’s story.

Our success is America’s success.

Our future is America’s future.

May the next 250 years reflect the very best of who we are, united in purpose, strengthened by diversity, and committed to leaving a legacy worthy of those who came before us.

Building Bridges Initiative

I was recently watching an episode of Billions when one of the characters casually mentioned moving money through hawala.

For most viewers, it was probably just another piece of financial jargon.

For me, it opened an entirely different conversation.

As someone who works daily to build trade and investment relationships between Africa and the Diaspora, I immediately thought:

How many opportunities have been lost because our financial systems simply don’t work together?

Why is it often easier to send money from Atlanta to London than from Atlanta to Freetown, Dakar, Guinea, or Cote d’Ivoire?

Why does legitimate business frequently become trapped in paperwork, correspondent banking restrictions, compliance reviews, high fees, and delayed settlements?

And why has one of the oldest financial systems in the world continued to thrive despite modern banking?

The answer begins with a system called hawala.

What is Hawala?

Hawala is an informal value transfer system based almost entirely on trust rather than the physical movement of money. Hawala is an ancient, trust-based system of transferring money without the physical movement of currency across borders. It operates outside traditional banking by relying on a global network of brokers (known as hawaladars) who settle debts with one another through their own personal and business

A merchant in Atlanta wants to send $10,000 to a supplier in Sierra Leone.

Instead of initiating an international wire through multiple correspondent banks, he gives the money to a trusted hawala broker in Atlanta.

That broker contacts another trusted broker in Freetown.

Within hours, or sometimes minutes, the supplier receives the equivalent amount locally in cash in a market. No money actually crossed the ocean. Only trust did!

Later, the two brokers settle their balances through trade, reciprocal payments, currency exchanges, or other financial transactions.

It’s astonishingly simple.

Before SWIFT, There Was Trust

Long before modern banking, African trade networks stretched across the Sahara Desert.

Gold.

Salt.

Ivory.

Textiles.

Livestock.

Entire economies functioned without electronic banking.

The merchants who moved these goods belonged to trading families and ethnic groups whose reputation was their greatest asset.

Lose your honor.

Lose your business.

Across West Africa, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Indian Ocean trading routes, commerce depended on relationships.

Contracts were often verbal.

Integrity was currency.

Reputation was collateral.

Trust was everything.

Why Hawala Still Exists

Many people assume informal systems exist because modern banking hasn’t arrived.

That isn’t entirely true.

Sometimes modern banking exists...

It just doesn’t work very well.

Businesses operating between the United States and Africa often face:

• Limited correspondent banking relationships

• Currency shortages

• Foreign exchange restrictions

• Excessive compliance documentation

Think about that.

An entrepreneur in Senegal pays a supplier in Ghana.

The transaction may travel thousands of unnecessary miles before returning to Africa.

That is neither efficient nor inexpensive.

This is the question many entrepreneurs across the African Diaspora quietly ask.

Too often, recognition comes long after the labor. The public sees the accomplishment but not the years of consistency that created it. They see the award but not the setbacks. They see the stage but not the struggle. Yet that is where true character is formed, in the process.

As I reflected on this honor, I thought about the many people throughout DeKalb County and beyond who continue to pour into others quietly every single day. Small business owners creating opportunities. Community leaders mentoring youth. Faith leaders guiding families. Entrepreneurs building something from nothing. Mothers and fathers sacrificing for future generations. These are the real architects of progress.

This award reminded me that legacy is not built through recognition alone. Legacy is built through impact.

And there is something truly amazing about creating legacy, building businesses, opportunities, institutions, and pathways that will outlive us and continue serving generations to come.

I remain deeply grateful to Congressman Hank Johnson and his office for acknowledging the work being done across our communities. I also congratulate each of the recipients whose journeys continue to inspire others to dream bigger, serve harder, and lead with integrity.
