In response to my recent essay, Bonds and Biophysics, a reader posed a profound set of questions regarding the fundamental nature of money. They asked how money mediates supply, demand, profit, and liquidity expansion, and importantly, what role “money destruction”—such as share price collapses in the stock market—plays in maintaining financial homeostasis. They also hypothesised that our journey towards the Resource Entropy Singularity (S_crit) is driven by a “genetic flywheel” (autopoiesis) designed to maximise short-term human survival and living standards.

These questions cut straight to the core of the Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE) framework. To answer them, we must completely discard the orthodox view of money.

Mainstream economics treats money as a neutral veil over barter—a frictionless, abstract plane floating above physical reality. Thermodynamics tells a different story. In the SETE framework, money is an active informational routing table. It is the code that directs biophysical flows of exergy through the socio-economic metabolism.

To understand how this routing table generates profit, demands infinite liquidity, and requires periodic stock market crashes to survive, we must first correct a catastrophic, century-old misunderstanding about the nature of value.

The Twin Evasions of Value: Productivism and Subjective Utility

Much of our modern cognitive dissonance stems from a profound category error: the conflation of physical Wealth (exergy, ecosystems, raw materials) with abstract Value (the social accounting metric). Social wealth isn’t the accumulation of money; it’s the ability to capture and command physical wealth for a social purpose beyond subsistence.

This error was calcified in two distinct, equally fatal ways by the twin offshoots of the Strong Enlightenment: 20th-century state productivists (e.g., Stalinism) and Neoclassical economics. Both share a mechanistic, anthropocentric worldview that treats nature merely as a passive backdrop for human conquest, but they arrived at their thermodynamic blindness via different paths.

The Productivist Error: State Marxists misread Karl Marx’s critique of political economy as an endorsement of a crude “Labour Theory of Everything”, assuming human labour actually created physical wealth out of nothing. But careful reading of Marx—especially when integrated with the biophysical insights of the Physiocrats—reveals the opposite. Nature is the sole source of physical wealth. Human labour does not create this energy; it acts as a thermodynamic transducer that structures natural exergy. Capitalism simply uses human labour time as its metric of abstract Value, treating the Earth’s physical exergy as a free, uncosted gift.

The Neoclassical Error: Orthodox capitalist economics took a different route. Terrified by the implications of the classical Labour Theory of Value, the Marginalists of the 1870s threw out objective physical constraints entirely. They declared that Value was purely subjective—based on “Marginal Utility”. For a consumer, this meant subjective desire. For a capitalist, the “utility” of a commodity or machine was simply its Marginal Revenue Product: its capacity to be utilised to generate future profit.

By defining Value purely as subjective utility measured by market price, Neoclassical economics entirely severed the financial map from the physical territory. It created a paradigm where the thermodynamic cost of energy extraction is ignored. It assumes that if a resource runs out, price signals will magically summon a substitute via human ingenuity, completely bypassing the laws of physics.

Money is the quantification of this abstract, deeply flawed Value system. When the Strong Enlightenment (the hubristic, reductionist branch of Enlightenment thought) conflates physical Wealth with monetary Price, it builds a fortress of apologetics. It allows the system to pretend that an expanding financial ledger is synonymous with expanding physical abundance.

The Genetic Flywheel: Profit as Autopoiesis

The reader rightly suspects that a “genetic flywheel” drives this system. In systems ecology, this is known as the Maximum Power Principle (Lotka-Odum): self-organising systems evolve to maximise the intake and degradation of available energy.

Capitalism is a biophysical autopoietic (self-reproducing) structure. Its genetic code is expressed as:

The system must end with more abstract value than it started with. This is the structural definition of profit. In my SETE 2.0 paper MPP equates to a system locked into the r-Strategy (G_r) goal-seeking macro-evolutionary drive to maximise throughput.

Profit is not merely a measure of human greed; it is the socio-economic manifestation of the Maximum Power Principle. Profit acts as the metabolic signal that a specific node in the network has successfully captured surplus exergy (P_net). The system rewards that node with more routing capacity (money), allowing it to command even more exergy in the next cycle.

This is how money mediates supply and demand: it is a Shannon entropy filter1 that allocates the right to consume the Earth’s exergy to whichever processes maximise the metabolic throughput of the civilisation in the here and now. The flywheel does not care about the long term; it optimises exclusively for immediate structural expansion.

Liquidity Expansion and Fictitious Information

Humanity unlocked the Carbon Pulse circa 1750, but during the post-WWII Great Acceleration, the surplus exergy growth curve reached its absolute maximum. Gross exergy (P_gross) exploded at such a rapid rate that it temporarily outpaced the accumulation of the Wealth Siphon (ɑ)—the systemic concentration of rent-seeking and hoarding.

Because the physical surplus was expanding so rapidly, the map (money) and the territory (energy) appeared perfectly synced.

That explosive phase ended in the 1970s as conventional exergy returns (ERoEI) began to plateau. Faced with a constrained physical flow of energy but driven by a genetic flywheel that demands constant expansion, the political economy executed a phase-shift: it invented modern global financialisation (ɑ_f).

In the SETE equations, financialisation is uniquely dangerous because it acts as a temporal blockage. When the present physical surplus can no longer generate sufficient profit to satisfy the flywheel, the system expands liquidity (debt, credit, derivatives). Liquidity expansion is the act of writing fictitious information into the routing table. It issues a contractual claim on unextracted, future gross exergy to simulate purchasing power in the biophysically starved present.

Fictitious does not mean false. It means information about a future physical state that has not yet been realised.

While the future state remains physically achievable, the fiction is harmless—or rather, productive. When the required physical state becomes impossible, the information ceases to be a claim upon a possible future and becomes a claim upon nothing.

Financialisation is not inherently the creation of fictitious information. It is the expansion of claims upon future physical states. It becomes fictitious when those claims exceed the phase-space of physically viable futures.

Money Destruction: The Stock Market as an Entropic Vent

This brings us to the reader’s most astute question: the role of “money destruction” via share price movements. How does the system maintain financial homeostasis?

As the genetic flywheel pumps out infinite liquidity to mask the ERoEI decline, the Institutional Mass (M_I) of the ledger grows monstrously heavy. The sheer computational and thermodynamic cost of maintaining this fictitious information generates massive Entropic Gravity. The system is metabolising its own viable future states (Ω_viable) just to keep the accounting illusion alive.

Eventually, the ledger demands a volume of physical exergy from the future that cannot possibly exist. When the market heuristically senses this biophysical impossibility (as we are seeing right now in the global sovereign bond markets), it triggers a correction.

A stock market crash is a thermodynamic venting mechanism.

When a stock index drops 20%, trillions of dollars of “wealth” evaporate. But notice what did not happen: no factories burned down, no tractors disappeared, no oil wells vanished. Physical reality remained unchanged. What was destroyed was fictitious information. The system violently erased trillions of impossible claims on future exergy to bring the ledger back into a (temporary) homeostatic alignment with the underlying physical territory.

Share price destruction is the financial equivalent of a fever breaking. It is the system involuntarily clearing its corrupted routing table to maintain financial autopoiesis alongside a depleted physical baseline.

The Apex Synthesis: The China Fallacy

The mainstream geopolitical discourse is currently paralysed by a binary hallucination: China is framed either as the ultimate “Great Threat” destined to eclipse Western financial hegemony, or as the “Green Salvation” that will successfully decouple industrial growth from physical limits through sheer state capacity.

Both narratives are fundamentally wrong because they ignore thermodynamics. China has not engineered an escape from the Resource Entropy Singularity; it has simply merged the Twin Evasions of the Strong Enlightenment into a single, terrifyingly efficient apex synthesis.

First, modern China retained the core productivist flaw of 20th-century state Marxism. Its political architecture is optimised for one thing: maximising the flow of gross exergy (P_gross) to rapidly expand its physical and Institutional Mass (M_I). It treats the biophysical baseline—coal, rare earths, river systems, and concrete—as a totally free, uncosted input to be conquered. It became the world’s ultimate thermodynamic transducer.

But a pure command economy cannot process information fast enough to compete globally. So, post-1978, China bolted on the Neoclassical routing table. It adopted subjective market utility and price signals. More importantly, when the initial burst of cheap, high-ERoEI coal and its massive demographic surplus began to wane in the 2010s, China aggressively embraced financialisation (α_f).

To keep the genetic flywheel spinning and hit arbitrary GDP growth targets, the state engineered the largest credit expansion in human history. Through Local Government Financing Vehicles (LGFVs), shadow banking, and an astronomical real estate bubble, they wrote an unprecedented volume of fictitious information into their ledger. They issued paper claims on future energy to build empty cities today.

In SETE 2.0 terms, China is now suffering from acute Metabolic Decoherence. It built a physical and institutional mass so staggering that the Entropic Gravity required to maintain it is stalling the entire machine. The ongoing deflationary spiral in the Chinese economy is the exact thermodynamic venting mechanism described above. The apex synthesis of the Strong Enlightenment did not solve the biophysical crisis; it merely ensured that when the ledger finally burns, the fire will be visible from space.

The Weaponisation of Time: Rationality Under Triage

If the ledger contains fictitious information, why does the rest of the world continue to obey it? Why does the Global South capitulate to US dollar hegemony when alternative structures (like BRICS clearing rails) are actively being theorised?

The answer lies in the biophysics of time. Neoclassical economics assumes a “Rational Economic Actor” optimising across an open, infinite future. However, under thermodynamic stress, the temporal horizon compresses.

When the US engineers a severe Eurodollar shortage—siphoning global liquidity into the core via tariffs and sanctions—it forces the periphery into acute biological and institutional triage. Building a parallel, non-dollar physical routing architecture requires massive upfront capital, energy, and time. If a peripheral nation is starving of liquidity and cannot clear tomorrow’s energy import, it cannot spare the residual surplus to build a bridge to tomorrow.

It is completely rational, within a compressed time horizon, to abandon long-term infrastructure and pay the extortion fee to the dollar system just to keep the lights on today. The core relies on this dynamic. By starving the periphery of immediate liquidity, it weaponises the compressed time horizon, ensuring competitors lack the surplus to build an alternative to the ledger. It relies on the cruel calculus that survival in the immediate present overrides any strategy for the future.

Conclusion: The Singularity of the Map and Territory

Because our policymakers operate under the Strong Enlightenment delusion that the subjective price ledger is the reality, they view entropic venting events as policy failures rather than biophysical necessities.

The weaponisation of the Dollar we see today is a consequence of the deterioration of the conditions that made Dollar hegemony relatively benign. During the great expansion of globalisation, free trade was genuinely positive-sum. Production could migrate toward lower-cost resources and labour while the expanding global economy simultaneously created new markets for the resulting output. Chinese industrialisation did not initially threaten the Dollar System because China’s growth was also growth in the physical economy against which global financial claims could ultimately be realised.

That condition cannot be assumed indefinitely. As the expansion of the global exergy frontier slows, the problem changes from the creation of new surplus to its allocation. Growth becomes increasingly competitive. Every major industrial economy expanding its command over energy, resources, manufacturing capacity, and trade represents a larger claim upon a future surplus that is no longer expanding at the rate to which the financial system has become accustomed.

The perceived threat is therefore not fundamentally BRICS. BRICS is a symptom. The underlying threat is the possibility that the global economy can no longer generate sufficient physical surplus to make the expanding claims of its participants mutually compatible. Globalisation didn’t fail because free trade suddenly became irrational. Free trade was extraordinarily successful while the global physical economy was expanding rapidly enough for its gains to be mutually reinforcing. What is failing is the assumption that the same institutional arrangement remains positive-sum after the expansionary physical regime that sustained it has changed.

The United States therefore does not weaponise the Dollar simply because it possesses the power to do so. It weaponises the Dollar because the previous positive-sum equilibrium is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. When a system approaches the Resource Entropy Singularity (S_crit), the core scrambles to siphon physical value from the periphery to prevent the ledger from correcting.

We see this today in the dual U.S. strategy of sweeping import tariffs (currently resulting in legal and constitutional thrashing over emergency trade authorities like Section 122) and the “Economic D-Day” ultimatum targeting Iran and the BRICS bloc. These tariffs actively suck Eurodollars out of the international market, creating a chronic dollar shortage. Into this engineered drought, the United States attempts to force the Global South to choose between the paper token—the Dollar System—and the physical barrel of oil.

This is mechanistic hubris operating at terminal velocity. By weaponising the ledger to command exergy it can no longer physically generate, the core assumes that financial leverage will always overpower the physical reality of resource flows.

We see the immediate failure of this logic in the tariff architecture itself. As Treasury Secretary Bessent recently admitted, the massive tariff rebates filtering through the system following court rulings are actively inflating the U.S. deficit. The numbers are stark: the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that the replacement duties will cover less than 60% of the revenue lost to the courts, while the Congressional Budget Office projects these trade policy changes will widen deficits by $900 billion over the next decade.

The administrative apparatus is eating its own tail. Instead of extracting physical margin, the state is forced to print more fiat just to manage the legal and corporate friction of its own extortion mechanism—pure thermodynamic leakage.

But you cannot burn a Eurodollar in a power plant. A civilisation cannot gracefully power down while clinging to a ledger built on temporal extraction. Escaping the gravity well of the Entropic Event Horizon requires more than balancing a budget; it requires the structural destruction of the fictitious information we call money—forcing a violent, unavoidable realignment of the map with the burning territory. Whatever comes out the other side will have had to jettison the mass of industrial civilisation.

Part I: The Biophysical Enforcer: Why the Bond Market is Rejecting the Paper Reality

When it comes to bubbles, many people do call them out, but everybody else just agrees to pretend. The is especially true for the biggest bubble of them all:

For decades, dissenting voices—from biophysical economists to structural heterodox thinkers—spelled out the exact mechanics of the trap: paper debt was growing exponentially while net energy per capita was hitting a ceiling. They warned that financialising the economy didn’t create exergy (or available energy and resources); it just created a complex stack of claims on a shrinking physical surplus.

Yet, the consensus held. For most of the last two centuries, the global industrial system operated within an expanding exergy regime. There were severe local and cyclical contractions, and even global interruptions in energy consumption, but the secular direction remained expansionary, the effect on the planetary ecosystem was externalised and growth was assumed to be invariant. If exergy surplus is rising, you don't need to put ‘rising exergy surplus’ into every economic model. It becomes background. Previous contractions were embedded within an expanding global energy frontier. The present problem is that the system may be approaching a condition in which the frontier itself is no longer expanding sufficiently to absorb the contraction. The consequences are increasingly apparent all around us, but the narrative isn’t maintained because people are fooled; it is maintained because unmasking it requires stepping out into the cold. The most dangerous heuristics are not those that fail immediately. They are those that succeed long enough to become institutionalised while gradually destroying the conditions of their own success. If you were an institutional asset manager, a sovereign treasury official, or a policy architect, acknowledging the truth invalidated the very mathematical basis of your job. Neoliberal economics, much like other offshoots of the Strong Enlightenment tradition, relies on a mechanistic, anthropocentric world-view. It assumes human policy and market pricing can endlessly substitute for physical resources.

A belief need not be widely held to become socially determinative; it need only be embedded in the institutions that define the available choices. So everyone signed onto the implicit pact: keep performing the ritual. Right up until the thermodynamic tiger stepped into the room.

Financial systems do not need to understand the physical substrate explicitly. They evolve heuristics that approximate it. A bond trader does not calculate net energy surplus; they calculate growth, inflation, fiscal capacity, term premia, liquidity and default risk. These variables are useful because, under the historical regime in which the modern financial system evolved, they were correlated with the economy’s capacity to honour its claims.

The danger arises when a variable that was previously treated as effectively constant ceases to be constant.

A secular expansion in net exergy makes future productive capacity appear almost axiomatic. Debt can therefore be priced against an expanding future because, historically, that approximation works. Institutions then encode the heuristic into mandates, regulations, models and expectations. What began as an adaptive approximation becomes institutional common sense.

But when the underlying physical regime changes from expansion to contraction, the heuristic does not automatically disappear. It becomes maladaptive.

The 30-Year Yield and the Systemic Half-Life

Today, the long end of the sovereign bond curve is seeking a biophysical basis. The faith that money will be returned in 30 years isn’t sufficient to overcome the knowledge that it physically cannot be.

The 30-year Treasury yield is no longer pricing time value or monetary inflation—it is pricing the temporal half-life of the physical system itself. When a nation issues a 30-year paper claim under a growing net energy surplus, the discount rate is small because the biophysical substrate is expanding. Time is on the side of repayment.

When that substrate enters catabolic contraction, the algorithm inverts. Investors at the long end recognise that the probability of full, real repayment at year 30 drops toward zero. The yield must therefore be high enough to amortise the entire principal value of the asset within whatever shortened time window the system has left.

The bond buyer is essentially saying: “I need my real purchasing power back in 5 to 10 years, because 30 years from now, the grid and the debt contract won’t exist in a form that can honor this claim.” The long end is therefore behaving as though the temporal horizon of the claim has shortened. Nobody needs to know why. The market only needs enough participants whose heuristics have begun responding to the consequences of the changing physical baseline.

The Global Synchrony of the Thermodynamic Wall

It is vital to recognise that this is not a localised, American phenomenon. Mainstream analysts look at Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) spiking to modern historic highs, UK Gilts breaking down, and European long-duration yields climbing, and they desperately search for isolated domestic policy errors to explain each one.

They miss the synchrony of the biophysical limit. Thermodynamics does not respect sovereign borders. Japan—an advanced industrial powerhouse with virtually zero domestic fossil exergy reserves—is the canary in the coal mine. Europe, having severed itself from its primary cheap energy proxy, is deindustrialising in real-time.

The U.S. Treasury market is simply the final boss, the ultimate core of the global claim stack. The synchronised global rejection of long-duration debt is the market realising that the planetary ERoEI ceiling has been hit. It isn’t a coordinated political rebellion; it is the physical baseline asserting itself uniformly across the entire fiat architecture. When the global exergy surplus contracts, the paper burns everywhere at once.

The Myth of the ‘Bond Vigilante’

Mainstream financial media loves to talk about ‘Bond Vigilantes’ punishing the government for bad policy. This is a fairy tale.

The Treasury market's enormous stock of institutional holdings should not be confused with its marginal price-setting capacity. A large proportion of Treasury holders operate under mandates, liability constraints, benchmark requirements or reserve-management objectives that limit their ability to respond freely to changes in price. The price, however, is determined continuously at the margin by the participants willing and able to change their positions. Hedge funds, dealers, principal trading firms and active managers therefore need not represent anything like a majority of the outstanding capital to exert disproportionate influence over the price of the entire stock. The marginal price setter need not understand the underlying dynamics. They only need a heuristic that responds to their consequences.

The marginal investor does not need to understand the thermodynamic constraint. Markets operate through heuristics. A trader may respond to inflation expectations, fiscal risk, term premia, collateral conditions, foreign demand or growth expectations without ever representing the underlying energy system explicitly. These are local approximations to a much deeper physical constraint.

The important distinction is therefore between understanding the cause and responding to its consequences.

A successful heuristic does not need to contain the physical variable that ultimately determines its validity. It only needs to correlate with reality well enough to produce successful decisions.

For decades, that was sufficient. But when the physical regime changes, the correlation breaks.

Tariffs, Sanctions, and the Narrative Smoke Screen

When a system approaches what we might call a ‘resource entropy singularity’—the point of no return where resource depletion outpaces extraction—the state must scramble to siphon physical value from the periphery.

This is the real causal chain connecting recent headlines:

1. Tariff Cannibalisation: While the headlines concentrate on the effect on consumers and importers, and the government rhetoric focusses on ‘rebalancing trade’ and rebuilding domestic industry, the U.S. tariffs on imports aren’t just trade disputes. They are mechanisms to extract physical margin, but they also suck eurodollars out of the international market, creating a chronic dollar shortage that spikes global funding costs and redirecting exergy flows.

2. The “Economic D-Day”: Desperate escalations—like choking off the Strait of Hormuz or launching full-scale financial warfare on Iran—restrict global net exergy flow. To cover the fact that this energy shock is destroying bond values, the Treasury issues high-drama “D-Day” rhetoric. It provides national security cover to manipulate financial clearing without admitting the underlying energy crisis as I explore in more detail in Part II, below.

3. The Treasury Buyback Panic: Scrambling to buy back 30-year paper and roll that funding into short-term T-bills was a fatal admission. Shortening the duration doesn’t fix a contracting net energy baseline; it just converts a 30-year structural crisis into a week-to-week collateral crisis.

The AI Exergy Sink

For a brief moment, the market found a secular religion to ignore this reality: Artificial Super Intelligence. The premise was that exponential AI scaling would engineer around the ERoEI (Energy Return on Energy Invested) cliff and generate infinite productivity growth to absorb $40 trillion in debt.

But LLMs are probabilistic pattern matchers, not deterministic reasoning engines. Generative video—rendering hyper-realistic lighting and fluid dynamics—feels like magic, but it bypasses the analytical filter to act directly on the visual cortex, masking computational and spatial emptiness.

Instead of a saviour, the trillion-dollar AI build-out has become the ultimate exergy sink. It is a physical parasite consuming real, high-grade base-load electricity directly from a failing grid, funded by a flood of corporate paper that competes directly with the Treasury for a finite pool of capital.

The AGI religion is built on a false premise: model complexity is an optimisation variable, not a threshold for generality.

The Zero-Velocity Endgame

So, how does it break? We likely won’t see a traditional 1929-style stock market crash, this will cause widespread confusion. A crash requires bids and transaction flow.

Instead, we are entering a zero-velocity clearing crisis. The bid simply vanishes. But this won’t be a sudden event, but a shortening horizon as I described in The Planck-Second Bond (where the market’s executable timeline compresses completely toward zero). The Federal Reserve and Treasury will attempt to flood the plumbing with liquidity to keep the paper asset stack afloat. This can lead to a classic Weimar or Caracas disconnect: a hyper-nominal melt-up where the stock market shoots to record highs in dollar terms, not because of physical production, but because it acts as a speculative sink for melting currency.

On paper, accounts will show massive wealth. In reality, beyond the horizon letters of credit won’t clear, supply chains will lock up, and the physical economy will freeze.

When a hungry tiger steps out of the brush, you don’t debate whether the tiger is acting out of poor policy choices or a misunderstanding of institutional etiquette. You are forced to deal with a thermodynamic reality that doesn’t negotiate with your balance sheet. The tiger isn’t beyond the horizon, it’s in the room.

Part II: The Tactical Trap – Forcing the BRICS to Jump

If the long-end of the bond market is writing the expiration date of the paper claim stack, then Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s “Economic D-Day” on Iran is a desperate attempt to reset the clock.

Bessent has drawn an absolute line in the sand: Any country that does business with Iran will be removed from the U.S. Dollar clearing system. On the surface, this looks like standard, albeit aggressive, geopolitical grandstanding. But viewed through the lens of international clearing mechanics and biophysical resource limits, it is a highly calculated tactical ambush aimed directly at the BRICS bloc. The Treasury is trying to force a systemic fracture before the global south has built the bridge to cross it.

The Timing: Catching the Alternative Rails in Prototype

For the past several years, the BRICS nations have been openly developing alternative cross-border payment rails to escape dollar hegemony.

However, as of late 2026, these systems are not yet mature enough to absorb the full weight of global trade:

• mBridge (the multi-CBDC platform) is operational but limited in scope and volume.

• China’s CIPS is growing but still lacks the deep, systemic liquidity of SWIFT.

• BRICS Pay remains largely in pilot phases, focusing on interoperability rather than offering a fully liquid, unified settlement currency.

The BRICS clearing house is simply not ready to replace the dollar tomorrow. By forcing the ultimatum now, the U.S. Treasury is executing a classic military manoeuvre: forcing the enemy to deploy their weapons before they are fully armed.

The Double Squeeze: Triage + Eurodollar Drain

To understand the sheer brutality of this trap, you have to pair the Iran ultimatum with the U.S. tariff policy.

The 10% U.S. tariff on imports is actively sucking eurodollars out of the international market, creating a severe global dollar shortage and driving up funding costs worldwide. Into this engineered dollar drought, Bessent drops the ultimatum.

The BRICS and peripheral nations are forced into an impossible triage:

1. Defect (Submit to the Dollar): If they abandon Iranian trade to keep their dollar access, they voluntarily cut themselves off from a massive node of physical exergy (oil). They preserve their financial clearing but starve their physical baseline.

2. Be Exposed (Choose the Exergy): If they choose the oil and get kicked out of the dollar system, they must settle transactions using their own incomplete, illiquid rails during a period of peak dollar shortage. This risks immediate currency crises, supply chain paralysis, and extreme economic pain.

The Mechanistic Hubris

This tactical squeeze is the ultimate manifestation of the neoliberal, mechanistic world-view. It operates on the deeply anthropocentric assumption that financial leverage—the control of abstract paper tokens and administrative clearing rails—will always overpower the physical reality of resource flows.

The architects of this policy believe they can perfectly calibrate the pain, forcing the BRICS into submission because the financial pain of losing the dollar will outweigh the physical pain of losing the energy.

But this is where the thermodynamic tiger steps back into the room. You can engineer a dollar shortage. You can freeze a clearing house. You can dictate a tariff. But you cannot burn a Eurodollar in a power plant, and you cannot run an industrial supply chain on a SWIFT message.

By forcing the global south to choose between the paper token and the physical barrel of oil, the U.S. Treasury is accelerating the very ‘resource entropy singularity’ it is trying to manage. It assumes the world will choose the paper. But when the physical baseline is contracting, survival dictates that nations will ultimately choose the exergy—even if they have to build the bridge while they are falling.

Part III: The Fallacy of the Fool and the Mechanistic Blind Spot

It is a fascinating, if grim, spectator sport to watch the brightest minds of the 20th-century institutional apparatus try to explain a 21st-century thermodynamic crisis.

When you listen to world-renowned monetary economists like Jeffrey Sachs or Steve Hanke, or brilliant geopolitical realists like John Mearsheimer, a glaring pattern emerges. They look at the exact same symptoms we are tracking—the $40 trillion debt stack, the Treasury duration panic, the 10% tariff drains, and the “Economic D-Day” against Iran—and they accurately diagnose the immediate friction points.

But when it comes time to explain why the system is breaking down, their models fail. Because they lack a biophysical framework, they are forced to retreat to what we might call the Fallacy of the Fool.

Signal Occlusion: Information-Rich and Causally Blind

Drawing on the Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE) model, we can understand this cognitive failure not as a conspiracy of silence, but as systemic Signal Occlusion.

The biophysical signal of collapse isn’t necessarily absent. In fact, the system is actively receiving it: strange yield behaviour, changing term premia, funding stress, altered trade flows, resource conflicts, supply-chain disruptions, geopolitical coercion, and increasingly expensive energy infrastructure.

But each institution interprets its own signal through a locally evolved vocabulary. The central banker reads “inflationary pressure”; the supply-chain manager reads “logistical bottlenecks”; the sovereign strategist reads “geopolitical friction”. Consequently, the common underlying macro-signal—the contraction of net exergy—gets fragmented into apparently unrelated, solvable phenomena.

This is signal occlusion without requiring anyone to deliberately suppress information. The mechanistic architecture of our institutions does not need to suppress information to occlude a signal. It merely needs to fragment the signal across incompatible explanatory vocabularies.

The Recursive Trap of Failing Heuristics

As we established in Part I, markets do not understand the physical substrate explicitly; they rely on heuristics (inflation, term premia, fiscal risk) that historically correlated with an expanding energy baseline. But this reliance on proxies is not limited to bond traders—it defines the entire academic and geopolitical apparatus.

The models used by Sachs, Hanke, and Mearsheimer are themselves heuristics evolved under the old regime of endless exergy. When the underlying physical regime changes from expansion to contraction, we witness a recursive cognitive collapse:

1. The institution’s policy heuristic fails (e.g., the Treasury hits a biophysical wall trying to manipulate the yield curve).

2. The analyst attempts to interpret this failure using their own outdated academic heuristic (e.g., pure geopolitics or monetarism).

3. Because their model lacks the physical variable that actually changed, the explanation becomes entirely detached from the environment.

The system’s heuristic fails, so the observer uses another failing heuristic to diagnose it. The only variable left in their equation to explain the failure is human error.

The “Idiot Leader” Cop-Out

Take Professor Mearsheimer’s analysis of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s ultimatum to the world regarding Iran. Mearsheimer expertly outlines why trying to isolate Iran economically is a geopolitical non-starter. He notes that China, Russia, and Turkey won’t comply, and that pushing Iran to the brink risks a catastrophic regional war.

Because the “Economic D-Day” makes absolutely zero sense as a conventional strategy to defeat Iran, Mearsheimer is forced to conclude that Bessent must simply be “economically illiterate” or that the administration is making decisions devoid of logic.

This is the intellectual cop-out of the institutional elite. Attributing systemic collapse to “idiot politicians” serves a vital psychological function: it preserves hope. If the problem is just that a Treasury Secretary is a “vulgarian” or that European leaders are “acting like children”, then the solution is simple—elect smarter, more dignified people next term.

But Bessent is not an idiot; he is executing administrative triage. The ultimatum isn’t actually about Iran; Iran is just the tripwire. The true target is the global clearing architecture. The U.S. is facing a resource entropy singularity and an unbacked paper stack. By forcing a dollar shortage via 10% tariffs and then demanding the BRICS abandon their physical energy lifelines or face financial exile, the Treasury is attempting to weaponise the dollar to monopolise remaining exergy flows.

Mearsheimer misses this because his model operates purely on a geopolitical chessboard. He doesn’t see that the board itself is running out of energy.

The Strong Enlightenment Blind Spot

This blindness isn’t accidental; it is baked into the ideological DNA of modern academia. Neoliberal economics—much like the Stalinist central planning of the 20th century—is an offshoot of the Strong Enlightenment tradition.

Both systems share a fatal, anthropocentric, and mechanistic worldview. They operate on the assumption that human policy, administrative decree, and market pricing can endlessly substitute for physical reality. To a policy architect, the economy is a frictionless machine governed by applied mathematics and institutional rules.

They genuinely believe they can issue a Treasury memo that overrides a thermodynamic wall. They believe that a financial lever (cutting off dollar clearing) is inherently stronger than a biophysical lever (the physical flow of crude oil and base-load power).

But you cannot burn a Eurodollar in a power plant, and you cannot run an industrial supply chain on a SWIFT message. When a mechanistic ideology collides with a biophysical limit, the physics always wins.

Reclaiming the Political Economy

This is why classical thinkers never called it ‘economics’—they called it Political Economy.

Mainstream academia attempts to treat economics as discovered applied mathematics, a sterile world of equilibrium models where the only variable is human preference. If the algorithm breaks—if bond yields spike while the Treasury begs for buyers—they blame “Bond Vigilantes”, treating the market like a cabal of political insurgents punishing the state.

But the true definition of Political Economy is much darker and much more real. It is the high-tension collision zone where human political consensus attempts to impose abstract paper claims on an unyielding biophysical substrate.

• The Political: The narrative layer of debt contracts, fiat tokens, tariffs, and laws.

• The Biophysical: The immutable physical substrate of net energy returns (ERoEI), exergy flows, and resource entropy.

For the last forty years, a massive, high-grade energy surplus allowed the political layer to expand exponentially. We built a $40 trillion debt stack and launched trillion-dollar, high-entropy AI data centres under the delusion that paper created energy.

The marginal price setters dumping 30-year Treasuries today are not vigilantes, and our leaders are not simply idiots making bad policy choices. We are watching the precise moment where the paper claims run out of physical exergy to back them up. Physics does not veto the algorithm. Physics determines the environment in which the algorithm can remain valid. The Political Economy is reasserting its brutal, material reality.

If you listen to mainstream financial commentary, the US Treasury recently took a bold, if slightly risky, ‘policy decision’.

Faced with 30-year bond yields hitting multi-decade highs, soaring net interest payments, and a bond market beginning to fracture, the Treasury abruptly altered its buyback schedule mid-quarter. They doubled their buybacks of long-dated bonds, providing immediate ‘liquidity support’ to force yields back down. To fund this massive purchase – since they are running a $1.8 trillion deficit and have no actual cash – they simply issued a mountain of short-term Treasury bills (T-bills).

The pundits analysed this as a calculated gamble. They politely debated the ‘duration risk’. One popular commentator (Kyla Scanlon) even capped off her analysis with the standard 20th-century boilerplate, gravely warning that this intervention comes at “an increased cost for future generations when this debt does come due”.

It is a staggering display of cognitive dissonance.

There are no ‘future generations’ on the hook for this specific manoeuvre, because the Treasury just swapped 30-year obligations for 90-day paper. The reckoning isn’t decades away for our grandchildren. It is scheduled for the next quarterly refinancing auction.

The Treasury did not execute a strategy. They were forced into a corner. And in their desperate scramble for air, they have revealed the terminal trajectory of the monetary system: the total collapse of the economic time horizon.

The Anatomy of a Cornered Animal

Calling the Treasury’s move a ‘risk’ implies that policy-makers sat down at a strategic table, weighed their options, and calmly decided to roll the dice on a high-stakes financial play.

Nothing could be further from the truth. You do not unilaterally upend your entire issuance strategy mid-quarter out of casual bravado. The bond market was breaking. The long end of the yield curve was threatening to fracture the entire credit superstructure – everything from mortgages to corporate debt is priced off those long-term yields. If the Treasury hadn’t smashed the emergency glass, the financial plumbing would have seized.

So, they resorted to the ultimate shell game: borrowing short to fund long. They took a long-term duration problem and transformed it into a high-frequency volatility problem.

This is not a fix. It hasn’t even stemmed the bleeding. It has simply wired the entire sovereign balance sheet directly to short-term panic. By heavily relying on short-term T-bills, the Treasury must now roll over massive tranches of national debt repeatedly throughout the year. They are betting they can perpetually refinance at manageable rates, a bet that leaves them exquisitely vulnerable to the next geopolitical shock, energy spike, or liquidity freeze.

The Incredible Shrinking Horizon

To understand why this is happening, you have to strip away the monetary illusion and look at the biophysical reality.

Fiat currency is merely an information ledger – a token system used to coordinate real physical activity. In a healthy, energy-surplus economy, fiat money can successfully project a ‘future utility’. People lock up capital in 30-year bonds because they rationally expect that tomorrow’s productive capacity (fuelled by expanding energy and resources) will be larger, more complex, and more capable of honouring those claims.

But we are no longer in an expanding system. As we hurtle towards a resource entropy singularity, the underlying biophysical surplus is contracting. The real cost of energy, raw materials, and basic metabolic survival is relentlessly climbing.

When the underlying resource base contracts, the future stops growing. And when the future stops growing, long-term claims become unpayable as real resource contraints materially contract what is physically possible. You cannot accurately price a 30-year bond when you don’t know what the energy supply, or the purchasing power of the currency, will look like in 30 months.

So, the horizon contracts. The Treasury shortens its duration to survive the year. Then, inevitably, they will have to shorten it to survive the quarter, the month, and the week. As the market’s appetite to absorb rolling mountains of short-term debt at stable rates frays, the system will be forced to compress further.

Eventually, the sovereign debt market stops being a mechanism for intertemporal capital allocation and turns into an overnight high-frequency clearing house. It becomes a frantic loop of perpetual refinancing where the government must issue new tokens every morning just to pay off the tokens it printed the night before.

We are hurtling towards the era of the Planck-second duration bond – a financial equivalent of a cellular organism burning through its own mass just to maintain a baseline heartbeat for one more microsecond.

The Illusion of ‘Forever’

The most bizarre aspect of this structural collapse is the complete lack of systemic panic. But perhaps that makes perfect sense.

When survival narrows down to the immediate moment, human cognition compresses right along with the balance sheet. People stop worrying about the macroeconomic horizon because that concept requires a stable, predictable future to even comprehend. You don’t panic about a systemic wall you can no longer see; you just adapt to the immediate frequency of the treadmill.

We see this same psychological compression mirrored in the private sector. Look at the current AI infrastructure boom. Tech monopolies are sinking billions into massive data centres, treating 6-year amortisation schedules as if they are practically infinite. In a system where the physical light cone of predictable economic cause-and-effect has shrunk to a few quarters, betting on a 6-year horizon isn’t long-term investing; it’s pure science fiction. They are building high-entropy monuments to the future precisely because the present has stopped adding up.

This is also why the US appears to be acting recklessly geopolitically; consequences beyond ensuring the immediate survival of the system are simply beyond the horizon. Political systems whose effective planning horizon has collapsed will systematically select for actors capable of exploiting the present, regardless of their ideology. Donald Trump is merely the most conspicuous contemporary expression of that selection pressure.

The US government cannot go ‘bust’ in the sense of running out of printable dollars. But if it cannot command the physical energy, materials, and labour required for its own self-maintenance, it is functionally insolvent.

The Treasury isn’t managing a transition; they are just accelerating the frequency of the triage. They are caught in a trap where the only way to keep the system alive today is to entirely consume tomorrow. And when tomorrow finally arrives, the rollover window will only be that much shorter, and shorter, shorter: The only limit is finite time.

Over the last couple of weeks—while taking a break from geopolitics—I’ve been working on a specification and implementation of an alternative computing paradigm in accordance with my SETE work. The path we walk is contingent—not inevitable—but from the path, this isn’t always visible, and if you walk it long enough you no longer possess the resources needed to plot a new trajectory.

To test if escaping this path dependence is actually possible, I have built a controlled counterfactual: a fully functional Linux kernel patch and an integrated -mcontract=scalar execution invariant for GCC and Binutils. I intend to compile a full Gentoo user space.

However, I want to be careful not to invite overly broad conclusions. It is a fascinating experiment to attempt a structural pivot within computer architecture precisely because it is a relatively tiny, strictly bounded subset of our broader civilisational predicament. Is it possible to pull off a fundamental change of trajectory within this specific domain? Perhaps. But civilisation itself is vastly more complex, and I suspect we are already well past the point of no return on the macro scale.

Modern computing architectures operate on an implicit capability model: a process potentially owns every hardware feature, and the kernel must dynamically discover its usage.

The central proposition of CBE is that an execution context should declare the physical state it is permitted to possess, and the OS/hardware interface should exploit that contract rather than dynamically infer state requirements.

The XSAVE Boundary

Historically, architectures have relied on dynamic state discovery to manage heterogeneous execution state (SIMD, AMX). Hardware mechanisms like XSAVE are sophisticated optimisations that make implicit heterogeneous state affordable.

However, XSAVE cannot eliminate the physical cost of maintaining the possibility of that state. Dynamic state discovery is fundamentally inferior to an architectural invariant when that invariant can be established ahead of execution. CBE provides an execution class where the absence of data-plane state is an architectural guarantee.

2. Formal Definition of the Contract

The foundational execution contract is CBE-SCALAR. It distinguishes strictly between what the contract guarantees and what the implementation may optimise.

CBE-SCALAR Architectural Guarantees:

1. No architectural Floating-Point (FP) state.

2. No SIMD/vector state.

3. No hardware-crypto execution state.

4. Floating-point values are represented and passed strictly through the scalar ABI.

5. Data-plane operations occur through asynchronous submission.

6. Contract violation is a defined execution fault.

Because of this architectural property, the OS may completely omit all prohibited state from its context management. (”The kernel does not save XMM state” is the implementation detail; “The execution context cannot contain XMM state” is the architectural invariant that enables it.)

Compiler Identity

The GCC backend enforces this via -mcontract=scalar. To provide maximum flexibility without polluting the environment, the compiler exposes two distinct identifiers:

• __cbe__: Informs the codebase that it is running under a Contract-Based Execution paradigm (useful for generic headers mapping math to the ACVM).

• __x86c__: Informs the codebase of the specific base ISA (useful for low-level scalar inline assembly like memory fences or locks).

Legacy monolithic assumptions (like __x86_64__) are explicitly undefined.

Orthogonality of Address Models

CBE separates the execution contract from the memory address model. Cache density optimisations (like 32-bit pointers on a 64-bit ALU) are valuable but orthogonal to the core CBE thesis.

The binary protocol relies on a 16-bit opcode space that adopts an extension-class model analogous to RISC-V’s extensible ISA philosophy:

Following on from The Hidden Costs of Making Everything General Purpose, where I used CPU Architecture and Linux along with a kernel patch as an analogy for the political economy; this time I’m going show how the concept of the contract as the crystalisation of trust also applies to the reverse analogy of humans and culture. But first, I want expand upon the nature of consciousness and self I introduced in The Telemetry of Collapse: Sentience, Extraction, and the Immune Response to a Dying Machine to describe how we ended up running this code. This is an alternative perspective on my SETE model and The Path to the Singularity paper.

If we are to understand the terminal trajectory of our political economy, we must first abandon a comforting illusion: the belief that the machine is being driven by someone.

When we look at the grotesque inequality of the modern world, the ecological devastation, and the relentless financialisation of basic human needs, our immediate instinct is to look for the architect. We assume that because the system is deeply pathological, it must be guided by pathological intent. We imagine a ruling class making conscious, top-down decisions to exploit the biosphere and atomise the working population.

But this anthropocentric view fundamentally misreads the nature of the system we inhabit. The Imperial operating system (OS) is not a conspiracy of evil men. It is something much more formidable, and far more terrifying. It is a higher-order Complex Adaptive System (CAS) operating on the substrate of human symbolic culture.

It possesses zero consciousness, zero sentience, and zero intent. But it possesses fierce, relentless viability-seeking dynamics.

To pierce the abstraction layer of our political economy, we must understand how we inadvertently built a machine that outgrew the cognitive scale of its creators, and how that machine is now actively suppressing the biological telemetry of the human nodes it relies upon.

The Category Error of the Self

To understand how human cognition mutated the evolutionary landscape, we must first avoid a fundamental category error regarding consciousness. We often mistake the map for the territory. The rigorous biological reality is layered:

1. Consciousness: This is the fundamental phenomenon. It is not the ‘self’ observing the world; it is the ongoing, temporally integrated process in which a system achieves a coherent state. It is the point of convergence where sensory input, internal states, and delayed predictions reconcile into a unified present.

2. The Self: This is an emergent pattern within that conscious process. If consciousness is the flow dynamics of a river, the self is the stable vortex that forms within it. The vortex is real, but it is not a separate object.

3. The Self-Model: This is a representation generated by the system about itself (e.g., ‘I am hungry’, ‘I am injured’).

4. Reflective Cognition: This is the self-model recursively modelling itself (’I think about myself thinking’).

The human discontinuity was not the sudden invention of consciousness or the self. The phase shift occurred when we took that fourth layer—reflective cognition—and externalised it. Through language, mathematics, laws, and eventually ledgers and fiat currencies, we created Symbolic Culture.

Symbolic culture is not just a tool; it is a new evolutionary substrate. Just as genes evolve through biological selection, symbols and institutions evolve through cultural selection. Once this new layer of heredity existed, humans were no longer just organisms operating in a physical ecosystem. We became the biological CPU cycles running the code of higher-order, emergent systems.

Viability-Seeking Dynamics vs. Intent

This brings us to a crucial boundary. Conscious, sentient organisms possess intent. Because we experience the biological feedback loops of pain, exhaustion, and empathy, our intent is biologically bounded.

A higher-order CAS, like the modern Imperial economy, has no subjective experience. It has no intent. But it does have teleonomy. It exhibits viability-seeking dynamics. Like a blind algorithm, it will act to preserve its existing structure, substitute failing feedback mechanisms, and externalise costs to maintain its throughput.

The 1971 Mutation and Terminal Maladaptation

Institutionalist historians often point to the early 1970s—the decoupling of the dollar from gold and the birth of hyper-financialisation—as a series of disastrous ‘human choices’ made by a greedy patrician class.

Through a systems lens, this is entirely backward. Political economy emerges from the necessity of managing biophysical flows. In the early 1970s, the global system hit a thermodynamic wall. Peak cheap, high-ERoEI (Energy Return on Energy Invested) oil arrived, and the rate of growth in biophysical throughput slowed. The global accumulation class could no longer engineer Gramscian consent by distributing exponentially expanding real material surplus.

The Imperial OS faced an existential threat to its viability. A conscious entity with intent might have recognised the physical limit and chosen a managed contraction. But a CAS does not voluntarily dissolve itself.

The system mutated. It substituted a failing feedback mechanism (real physical surplus) with a new one. It leveraged our symbolic culture to invent a ‘fictitious surplus’. It created the fiat abstraction layer to spoof its own telemetry. The patrician class didn’t ‘invent’ this to be cruel; they were simply the administrative nodes executing the most viable evolutionary pathway to keep the machine’s required exergy flowing.

This telemetry spoofing produced a remarkable, terminal maladaptation: future discounting. By decoupling its symbolic map (finance) from the physical territory (thermodynamics), the system created a structural blindness. It is now optimising for the viability of a fictitious surplus, which requires the active, mathematical destruction of the real physical substrate. It is an evolutionary dead-end.

The Gradient of Complicity and the Missing Immune System

If the system has no intent, how do we judge the evil it produces? The CAS itself is not a moral subject; it is an object of moral evaluation. But the absence of agency at the system level does not erase the agency of the conscious subjects embedded within it.

Large systems are maintained by a gradient of complicity. The machine runs on a mixture of:

• People pursuing legitimate local goals;

• People conforming to institutional expectations;

• People rationalising harmful outcomes;

• People lacking relevant information;

• People who understand the consequences and accept them;

• And a smaller subset who actively exploit the dynamics.

Because the Imperial OS is a blind throughput-maximiser, it naturally selects for this final category at its apex.

The Imperial OS selects for psychopaths because it has no immune system. It cannot distinguish between a human node that cooperates for mutual benefit and one that externalises costs without compunction. To the machine, a sociopath looks like a perfectly optimised node.

Crucially, the fact that the vast majority of people operate in the lower tiers of this gradient—running on autopilot and failing to exercise their capacity for reflective cognition—does not absolve them. Ignorance born of convenience is still unethical behaviour. Abdicating our human faculty for reflection to serve a destructive machine remains a moral failure.

The Delusion of Reform and the Succession Protocol

We exist in a nested conflict. The viability-seeking dynamics of the Imperial OS are actively at war with the conscious intent of its biological nodes. Through downward causation, the OS pathologises the accurate biological telemetry (depression, malaise, dread) of its human nodes to force them back into compliance.

If the system is a blind, run-away CAS without an immune system, how do we stop it?

The brutal, thermodynamic answer is: we don’t.

We must abandon the delusional utopianism of believing we can somehow re-engineer the current Imperial OS from within. You cannot politically reform a Complex Adaptive System that has already committed to cannibalising its physical substrate to maintain a fictitious surplus. It will continue to optimise for throughput until it exhausts its available exergy and hits the resource entropy singularity.

This is the true purpose of the Execution Contract. It is not a software patch for the current regime; it is the foundational protocol for the succession society. It is the immune system we must deliberately engineer for our steady-state lifeboats—a set of explicit, hardware-enforced boundaries that function regardless of the psychological profile of the nodes executing them.

Let us be clear about what this is not. This is not a call for revolution, nor a utopian fantasy of ‘smashing the machine’. Revolutions seek to capture power; they are vulnerable to co-optation, suppression, and eventual reincorporation into the very system they sought to destroy.

The Execution Contract is different. It is a distributed, defensive, and patient withdrawal. It requires no mass mobilisation, no vanguard, and no single decisive event. It requires only that local nodes—communities, bioregions, individuals—establish explicit boundaries and refuse to cross them. From a systems architecture perspective, a brain is a metabolically exorbitant piece of hardware. It requires a massive, continuous flow of energy to maintain. The vast majority of animal life on Earth gets by just fine without one, relying on distributed nerve nets and local reflex arcs.

Brains evolved because a reflex is purely reactive. A centralised brain builds an internal model of the world to shift from reacting to the present to anticipating the future. By modelling predictable patterns, it allows an organism to execute complex behaviours where the reward or consequence is significantly delayed.

There is perhaps no better biological validation of this than the sea squirt. In its free-swimming larval stage, it needs to navigate a dynamic, three-dimensional environment to find a habitat. To handle this latency, it develops a rudimentary central nervous system. But the moment it attaches itself permanently to a rock, its environment goes from complex to entirely static. Because it no longer needs to predict movement, the metabolic cost of its nervous system is no longer justified. Its very first act upon settling is to digest its own central ganglion (what passes for a brain in this lineage), reverting to a decentralised filter-feeder.

How do we know how a dog feels? Because he tells us—through body language, facial cues, and vocalisations. The institutional denial of this sentience requires us to pretend we don’t trust our own senses, demanding we prove a continuity that evolution already guarantees. The burden of proof should not be on demonstrating that we are like other animals, but on justifying our exceptional status.

The Ideological Artefact of Exceptionalism

In modern behavioural science, ‘anthropomorphism’ is treated as a cardinal sin. A human experiences ‘terror’, but a pig exhibits a ‘threat-avoidance response’.

This is not scientific rigour; it is an ideological artefact. Evolution is fiercely conservative. If the neurochemical pathways and brain structures that generate baseline experience in a human also exist in a crow or a cow, Occam’s razor dictates that those structures perform the exact same fundamental function.

So why do we institutionalise the denial of sentience?

Because it is a load-bearing pillar of our political economy. The political and economic architectures we live under—from Stalinism to Neoliberalism—are deep offshoots of the Strong Enlightenment tradition. This tradition cemented an inherently anthropocentric and mechanistic worldview. For the biosphere to be treated as an infinitely exploitable resource base, it must be viewed as inert.

If society collectively accepted that the qualitative experience of suffering or anticipation is fundamentally equivalent across all brains, the moral justification for our entire mechanistic worldview would collapse. The terminology of behavioural science actively obscures this shared baseline because, if it didn’t, the profound ethical debt of treating conscious organisms purely as thermodynamic inputs would crash the system.

The Inevitability of Dehumanisation

To treat sentient subjects as extractable objects is, in the truest sense of the word, evil. But the darkest corollary of this mechanistic worldview is that it does not stop at the edge of the human species.

The foundational lie of the anthropocentric model was that we could build a firewall around human consciousness—that we could treat 99.9% of the biosphere as unfeeling machinery whilst magically preserving the sanctity of human experience. The Futility of the Carve-Out

Many people recognise this cruelty, yet they pour their energy into defending ethical ‘carve-outs’—a marginal environmental regulation, a ‘free-range’ label, a protected habitat.

We must be ruthless in our distinctions here. The ‘sustainable’ label on a product, the carbon offset bundled with a flight, the political petition that buys another decade of business-as-usual—these function as modern indulgences. They are purchased absolution that allows the machine to keep running and permits us to feel good about enabling the behaviour. But under a system fundamentally architected to extract, any rule that limits extraction is just systemic friction. Every regulation and green initiative is a metabolic luxury, funded entirely by temporary biophysical surplus.

As the global engine approaches a resource entropy singularity—the point of no return beyond which the forces driving resource depletion and environmental degradation become overwhelming and irreversible—the system must optimise to maintain its internal pressure. Because the system’s baseline definition of reality is mechanistic, the artificial constraints on extraction are the first things jettisoned. The carve-outs are revoked.

This is not, however, a dismissal of those who labour selflessly in the margins—the rewilder who tends a fractured ecosystem knowing it will be swallowed, the activist who defends a patch of ancient woodland without illusion of permanence, the carer who sits with the dying. Their work is not a carve-out. It is not a transaction. It is a sacrament of attention—an act performed not to purchase absolution, but because the act itself is the only adequate response to suffering. These are the hospice workers of a collapsing world, and their labour is sacred.

They will argue that windowed memory is a return to an archaic, hacky paradigm. They are wrong. The solution is not a DOS-era bank-switch; it is a hardware-accelerated HugePage Windowed Allocator.

AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it’s clearly a useful one.

It may not have been that “clearly” even just a year ago, but it’s no

longer in question today.

There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will

actually look like in the end), but “is it useful” is no longer one of

those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn’t actually used

it.

Yes, it can also be a somewhat painful tool, both for maintainer

workloads and just from a “it keeps finding embarrassing bugs”

standpoint.

But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing “La La

La, I can’t hear you” at the top of your voice like some people seem

to do.

The solution is to make sure those LLM tools help maintainers

instead of just causing them pain. There’s no question on that side.

We’re not forcing anybody to use it, but I will very loudly ignore

people who try to argue against other people from using it.

And no, AI isn’t perfect. But Christ, anybody who points to the

problems at AI had better be looking in the mirror and pointing at

themselves at the same time.

Because it’s not like natural intelligence is always all that great either.

The kernel project has been and will continue to be about the technology.

Sure, the social angle of working on open source is important and

often a very motivating part of the project, but in the end that’s a

side benefit, not the point of the project.

This is NOT some kind of “social warrior” project, never has been,

and never will be.

In the kernel community we do open source because it results in better

technology, not because of religious reasons.

And so we make decisions primarily based on technical merit. Not fear

This week, we watched the UK government take this reflex to its absolute, terrifying conclusion. They have ceased merely dismantling the sensors; they have legislated to criminalise anyone who dares to read them.

In early July 2026, the government rushed the National Security (State Threats) Bill through Parliament with unprecedented velocity.1 Framed as an emergency response to foreign intelligence activity, it cleared all of its House of Commons stages in a single day. The political economy constructing this legislation operates from a deeply mechanistic, anthropocentric paradigm—a legacy of the Strong Enlightenment tradition. It assumes it can manage reality through policy, financial engineering, and rhetoric.

They reached for a legislative fly swat to target dissenting journalism and foreign interference, but because of their thermodynamic blind spot, they have deployed a nuclear weapon. In doing so, they have triggered a system termination event for two of the UK’s most vital open networks: scientific academia and the City of London.

To understand why a state would inflict such catastrophic self-harm, we must look beneath the legal text to the biophysical reality driving the panic.

The Exergy Shock and Metabolic Decoherence

The timing of this legislation is the smoking gun. It was rammed through Parliament at the exact moment the temporary ceasefire in the Middle East collapsed.

The US-Israeli conflict with Iran, and the subsequent strikes on regional infrastructure like Qatar’s Ras Laffan complex, did not merely cause a ‘supply-chain blip’. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has physically severed roughly 20 per cent of the world’s accessible oil and gas flows. In thermodynamic terms, the global economy has been violently starved of the heat gradients—the exergy—required to generate physical work.

As I formalised in the Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE 2.0) model, when a system’s exergy buffer drops this violently, the physical economy shrinks.2You get immediate, structural pressures that monetary policy cannot fix, because you cannot print exergy.

This triggers a state of Metabolic Decoherence. Because the legislation provides no explicit carve-outs for factual accuracy, obtaining true scientific data from a designated state organ is now functionally criminalised. The state is legally mandating a lower resolution of reality. If the academic sensors cannot report the collapse, the state narrative can persist for a few critical quarters longer.

The Sovereign Capital Trap

If academia is the brain being starved of oxygen by this epistemic embargo, the City of London is the heart being starved of blood.

London’s entire model relies on being the ultimate frictionless terminal for global capital. By attempting to mechanistically ring-fence ‘hostile’ state actors, the Security State has fundamentally compromised the City’s operational architecture.

State capitalism is the dominant economic model for much of the world. Sovereign wealth funds, state-owned resource conglomerates, and foreign central banks are essentially organs of their respective states. Because the new legislation defines a ‘material benefit’ as explicitly including financial services, the City is trapped. If the government designates a foreign state, any transaction with its sovereign wealth fund becomes an immediate criminal liability carrying a 14-year sentence.

Risk and compliance departments cannot operate in an environment of subjective, retroactive criminal liability based on ‘constructive knowledge’. Their only rational response is compliance paralysis. They will sever ties not just with designated states, but with any emerging market or multipolar entity that might become designated.

This regulatory entropy hits at the worst possible macroeconomic moment. The international market is already facing immense structural pressure. The broad 10 per cent US import tariffs are actively sucking Eurodollars from the international market into the US, driving up global US dollar denominated funding costs.4

In a liquidity-constrained environment, capital seeks the path of least resistance. If London layers massive, opaque, and politically driven security liabilities over its financial architecture, capital will simply bypass the UK entirely, relocating to neutral nodes like Singapore or Dubai.

Bracing for Impact

The Security State is attempting to impose a rigid, localised boundary on a globally integrated system. The resulting ‘stupidity’ is not a lack of intelligence; it is an emergent property of a system prioritising its own short-term mechanical stability over its long-term thermodynamic viability.

We have reached the Entropic Event Horizon—the point where the system’s trajectory toward collapse becomes structurally locked, not just by energy depletion, but by the systemic inability to process the data of its own demise.

You do not need to understand the mathematics of Metabolic Decoherence to feel the gravity of this moment. The system is blinding itself, and we are letting it, because looking at the fist doesn’t stop it from hitting you. The UK government is simply mandating this blindness by law, smashing the dashboard so we don’t have to watch the dials hit zero.

Yet, if one wishes to understand the terminal pathology of our current political economy, there is perhaps no better microcosm than the speed with which the West is now rushing to replicate that exact architecture.

This structural convergence is playing out in simultaneous legislative assaults across Western jurisdictions: the UK Government’s attempt to age-gate network tunnelling protocols, and the French state’s aggressive criminalisation of open-source system architects.

Though nominally addressing different issues—protecting minors in the UK and combating illicit networks in France—both are symptoms of the exact same systemic disease. They reveal a fundamentally anthropocentric and mechanistic worldview, a direct legacy of the Strong Enlightenment tradition. Whether manifesting through top-down Neoliberal management or the centralised control of ‘Socialism with Chinese Characteristics’, this worldview assumes that complex socio-economic systems are mere clockwork machines. It operates on the delusion that a central planner can pause, isolate, or perfectly redirect a dynamic system without generating catastrophic physical consequences.

But technocratic overreach is never a mere force of nature; it is always a reactionary response to a perceived loss of control. The state is attempting to solve a socio-economic problem by structurally mandating the architecture of the network and criminalising the toolmaker. In doing so, it is walking directly into a thermodynamic trap—one designed to camouflage a much deeper, material decay.

The Collapse of the Analogue Consensus

To understand the radical nature of this shift, we must look at how the law has historically treated the physical economy. Under the traditional ‘analogue consensus’, tools possess agnostic utility. If a bank robber uses a Ford as a getaway car, or breaches a vault using a crowbar forged by a specific blacksmith, the manufacturer is not indicted for the robbery. The physical tool is legally and morally neutral; the intent belongs exclusively to the end-user.

Decades ago, when digital infrastructure was still widely understood as a neutral utility, I set up a simple HTTP proxy over an SSH tunnel for a Chinese friend. He wasn’t a dissident—in fact, he was quite patriotic—but he was curious about the outside web. It was a mundane technical favour, an act of personal assistance that existed entirely outside the purview of geopolitical conflict. The tool was agnostic; it simply routed data. Today, under the emerging doctrines of the UK and France, providing that exact same proxy would likely invite the state to classify the architect as an accomplice to ‘circumvention’ or ‘illicit networking’. The tool hasn’t changed; the regime’s paranoia has.

In late 2025, the developers of GrapheneOS—a privacy-focused, open-source mobile operating system—quietly packed up their digital infrastructure and fled France.1] This exodus was triggered by a revolutionary shift in legal doctrine, largely cemented by France’s 2023 LOPMI law, which effectively abandons the analogue consensus for digital infrastructure.2

The new paradigm dictates that if a systems architect designs a platform with encryption so robust that bad actors can use it with impunity, the architect is no longer a neutral toolmaker. By refusing to engineer vulnerabilities into the product, the developer is legally classified as an accomplice. The state is attempting to outsource law enforcement directly into the codebase, demanding that surveillance and control capabilities be built into the very physics of the system at the manufacturing level.

The Mechanistic Illusion and the Ledger of Behaviour

This precedent is tolerated in software because policymakers operate under the persistent delusion that the ‘digital’ and ‘analogue’ worlds are separated by a firm boundary. But the legislative push for measures like Mandatory Highly Effective Age Assurance (HEAA) on encrypted tunnels is not merely technical incompetence; it is a fundamental architectural shift.3

The original internet routed packets between anonymous nodes. Mandatory age verification destroys this topology by requiring a permanent, verifiable bridge between a legal/biometric identity and digital behaviour. To enforce these checks, systemic choke points must be built at the ISP, the identity broker, and the device level. The end goal is not child safety, but the creation of a Ledger of Behaviour. A system designed to check if a user can view content intrinsically maps who is viewing what, creating a centralised database of associations, information flows, and ideological consumption.

The sheer absurdity of attempting to enforce this at the network layer becomes apparent when one understands that an encapsulated tunnel is not a circumvention loophole; it is the native grammar of TCP/IP. The internet is comprised entirely of routed datagrams. When the state declares war on ‘tunnels’, it is declaring war on the basic architecture of modern networking. Because obfuscation protocols mimic standard HTTPS traffic, active Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) must use probabilistic heuristics. Avoiding massive collateral impact—dropping secure banking APIs, breaking enterprise cloud synchronisations, and systematically degrading the digital economy—is mathematically impossible.

The Double-Bind: The Dragnet and the Anomaly

Critics often point out that these age-gating and filtering systems are notoriously trivial to bypass for determined actors using basic operational security. However, this is a feature, not a bug.

The goal of the state is not absolute security, but ubiquitous baseline mapping. By raising the friction of evasion high enough, the vast majority of the population defaults to compliance. This creates a highly visible path for the compliant majority, which automatically isolates intentional actors through a systemic Double-Bind.

You either participate in the system and are constantly measured against a behavioural risk profile, or you refuse to participate (using encrypted routing, alternative hardware, or open-source OS). If you choose the latter, your very refusal to generate the expected telemetry flags you as an anomaly requiring scrutiny. The state doesn’t need to break your encryption; the mere presence of your functional anonymity in a sea of verified identities is enough to mark you as a structural threat.

The Enfranchisement Variable and Pre-Crime Management

Why is the Western state suddenly so desperate to build these digital dams and behavioural ledgers? The answer lies in the need to manage systemic entropy amidst severe material decay.

Recent dispatches from the front lines of the original ‘Great Firewall’ illustrate the reality of this friction. As Chinese regulators shift to heuristic filtering of ‘suspicious traffic patterns’, the immediate result is systemic instability, dropped endpoints, and active Layer-8 punishment, such as account suspensions for simply attempting to connect.4 China is currently choosing to absorb this immense thermodynamic and economic friction because it leans heavily on a material-performance social contract. The Firewall ‘works’ there because the population feels sufficiently materially enfranchised by rising living standards to tolerate the friction.

Western policymakers entirely miss this fragility. The West does not possess the same margin of stability, precisely because the Western social contract has historically relied on procedural enfranchisement—freedom of speech, open tools, and individual agency.

As the West’s underlying biophysical economy stagnates—characterised by falling energy returns (ERoEI), crumbling infrastructure, and a financialised economy increasingly squeezed by global Eurodollar shortages—that material decay is becoming impossible to ignore. The political economy, desperate to maximise value extraction while minimising internal disruption, requires a ubiquitous surveillance dragnet as an early-warning mechanism.

The state is building a Pre-Crime architecture. It does not look for traditional ‘crime’, but tracks the nucleation points of structural threats: the network centrality of dissenting voices, the sentiment velocity of anti-establishment ideas, and early resource coordination. The enforcement mechanism is rarely physical. Instead, the state relies on Soft Excommunication—algorithmic friction, downranking content, squeezing financial access, and degrading organisational capacity to bleed the energy out of a movement before it can manifest in the physical world. The state is eroding procedural freedoms to disguise and manage its material decay.

The Thermodynamic Trap and the Path of Mass Defection

This reactionary manoeuvre is thermodynamically doomed. Enforcing a default-deny whitelist and maintaining a high-resolution behavioural dragnet requires active, inline, stateful DPI at a terawatt-hour scale. The energy required to unwrap, analyse, and verify obfuscated packets inline is orders of magnitude higher than the energy required to send them.

Because this control system relies on statistical baselines and closed-loop feedback, there is no institutional exit. The only vulnerability is mass non-compliance.

If a sufficient mass of the population migrates to sovereign infrastructure—decentralised platforms, telemetry-free operating systems like GrapheneOS, and open hardware—the signal-to-noise ratio collapses. The anomaly becomes the baseline, breaking the fidelity of the state’s predictive models.

This forces the state into a fatal biophysical trap. To capture the missing data, the state must expend exponentially more energy and compute. Eventually, the thermodynamic costs of enforcing visibility outstrip the state’s capacity to maintain the control system. By blinding its own guidance system to mask its material failures, the state accelerates toward the resource entropy singularity—a point of no return beyond which the forces driving resource depletion become overwhelming.

The Velocity of Panic and the Final Convergence

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this structural convergence is its sheer velocity. China took over two decades to construct, refine, and normalise its digital dam alongside a period of explosive economic growth. The West, by contrast, is attempting to erect its equivalent almost overnight, frantically closing a decades-long surveillance gap in a matter of months.

This rapid escalation is not a display of state capacity; it is an admission of panic. Squeezed by macroeconomic pressures and the biophysical realities of a stagnant economy, the state is rushing to close the procedural valves before the public fully connects the dots of their own disenfranchisement.

Escaping this dragnet requires moving beyond passive refusal. It demands actively building a parallel board—establishing architectural sovereignty at the lowest levels of the hardware and software stack. In this frantic race to catch up to the Chinese model of control, Western technocrats are proving that the digital dam is not the architecture of a confident future. It is the emergency scaffolding of a system already in free-fall, waiting to shatter under the crushing weight of its own thermodynamic friction.

Bizarrely, when I ran the prompt again replacing Starmer with a generic politician (is there a difference?), the system bypassed its own filters by automatically substituting the face of Elon Musk into the crystal. I have opted to use a generic, faceless illustration instead, because allowing Musk to be the visual hook would be deeply misleading. But the AI’s behaviour is worth noting, because it perfectly maps the topography of modern power.

The algorithm, functioning exactly as the mechanistic worldview intends, redacted the true architect of the surveillance state while eagerly generating the billionaire class’s most visible distraction. The system protects its plumbing—the quiet, opaque enclosure of state data by figures like Thiel—but happily feeds you the spectacle of Musk. It is a real-time demonstration of the automated defence mechanisms of the political economy.

This essay, however, is about the plumbing.

It is a curious quirk of modern technocrats that they so frequently adopt the aesthetic of the villain, all while ignoring the structural reasons the villain’s empire inevitably collapses.

In early 2020, as the pandemic began to fracture the UK’s institutional baseline, the government handed over access to the health records of tens of millions of British citizens to an American data analytics firm. The cost of this unprecedented transfer of the public data commons was exactly £1.

The company in question, seeded by the CIA’s venture capital arm, is called Palantir. They build software named ‘Gotham’ for intelligence agencies to hunt human targets, and ‘Foundry’ for corporations and governments to manage vast datasets. By 2023, that initial £1 entry fee had ballooned into a £330 million contract to run the NHS Federated Data Platform. As Palantir’s UK chief cheerfully described the strategy in a leaked email, it was a simple matter of “buying our way in!”.

But the most revealing detail is the name above the door. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, a palantír is a seeing stone—a powerful tool for communication and surveillance. Its fatal flaw, discovered too late by the wizard Saruman, is that the network is ultimately controlled by a more powerful, central node in Mordor. Saruman believed he could utilise the network’s power while remaining immune to its inherent biases. He thought he was using the tool; the tool was actually reprogramming him.

When the UK government plugged the central nervous system of the NHS into Palantir, they made the same architectural miscalculation. They believed they were buying administrative efficiency. In reality, they were installing a two-way conduit.

The Illusion of the Political Spectrum

When criticised for their sprawling, opaque integration into the British state, Palantir’s executives frequently deploy a fascinating rhetorical sleight-of-hand. They remind their detractors that their extensive work with the American state “started under Obama”.

It is the ultimate neoliberal get-out-of-jail-free card. They expect the listener to be pacified by the progressive credentials of the Obama administration, assuming that their critics are merely objecting to the extreme-right aesthetics of Palantir’s co-founder, Peter Thiel, rather than the architecture of the surveillance state itself.

But this defence inadvertently reveals a deeper structural truth: when it comes to systems architecture, the conventional political spectrum is an illusion. Modern conservatism and modern liberalism are not opposing forces; they are distinct branches of the exact same Strong Enlightenment tradition. Both operate from an intensely anthropocentric, mechanistic worldview. Both view society not as a living ecology, but as an inefficient machine to be engineered and optimised.

The state does not care whether the software has a ‘progressive’ or ‘conservative’ origin story; it simply wants the tool that allows it to extract value from the NHS without doing the hard political work of rebuilding civic infrastructure.

Radical Romanticism and the Digital Blackshirt

This brings us to the profound irony sitting at the absolute centre of the UK’s data enclosure. The UK Chief Executive of Palantir, the man overseeing the ingestion of British medical records, is Louis Mosley.

He is the paternal grandson of Sir Oswald Mosley, the notorious founder of the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s.

When the media points out this lineage, the tech industry dismisses it as an unfair ad hominem attack. But this completely misses the systemic reality. The professional trajectory into intelligence-linked data surveillance is not a departure from the family lineage; it is an evolution of it.

Fascists were always liberals who adopted radical romanticism to justify group dominance. They took the bureaucratic, managerial state invented by the liberal order—a state designed to manage populations—and weaponised it. If liberalism is built on the premise of mechanically perfecting society, fascism is the point where the universal promise of that project collapses into violent, exclusionary particularism. They do not abandon the managerial technocracy; they accelerate it.

Louis Mosley does not need a brown-shirted militia to patrol the streets. He has ‘Foundry’. He is building the digital infrastructure that makes the crude, street-level brutality of his grandfather entirely redundant. The ‘liberal’ state no longer perceives a threat in the ideology of its own destroyers because it has already adopted their operating principles: human beings are not sovereign citizens; they are commodities to be processed for efficiency.

The Wealth Siphon and the Eradication of Slack

To understand the true function of the NHS Federated Data Platform, we must look at it through the lens of Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE).

The global economy is currently driven by a vertical ‘Wealth Siphon’—a mechanism that appropriates time, biophysical capacity, and future potential from the lower tiers of the system to feed a financialised apex. As I have argued previously, wealth at this scale ceases to be mere purchasing power; it becomes concentrated command authority.

A resilient system requires slack. It requires horizontal buffers—spare physical inventory, local administrative autonomy, and unmonetised time. Financial optimisation, however, treats slack as inefficiency. In the eyes of the financialised apex, an un-optimised hospital bed, a siloed database, or a patient’s un-mined medical history is viewed as ‘un-optimised capital’.

By migrating that data out of state-controlled silos and into Palantir’s proprietary black box, the government is executing a massive enclosure of a public commons. Palantir is not providing an IT upgrade; it is installing the plumbing for the Siphon. It maps the metabolic reality of 65 million people so that their biophysical data can be extracted, centralising command authority and stripping away the horizontal buffers of the state to feed the vertical yield of the apex.

The Lord of Magic and Machines

This mechanistic worldview was not just a passing theme for Tolkien; it was his central, identifying diagnosis of modern tyranny.

In a 1951 letter to his publisher, Milton Waldman, Tolkien explicitly defined what he called “the Machine”. He wrote that he intended the term to mean “all use of external plans or devices (apparatus) instead of development of the inherent inner powers or talents—or even the use of these talents with the corrupted motive of dominating: bulldozing the real world, or coercing other wills.”

To Tolkien, there was no difference between the dark magic of Sauron and the industrial machinery of Saruman. Both were external apparatuses designed to bypass the natural order, eliminate friction, and enforce the will of the architect upon the world.

When Peter Thiel stood at the Oxford Union and declared that the institutions like the NHS must be “ripped out and rebuilt” with market mechanisms, he was voicing the precise ideology of the Machine. A public healthcare system, rooted in civic solidarity, is inherently inefficient; it resists computation. By feeding it into Palantir, the state attempts to magically resolve its administrative decay, “bulldozing the real world” of complex human biophysics into abstract, financialised data points. They mistake the map for the territory.

The Thermodynamics of Systemic Failure

To understand why this architecture is ultimately doomed, we have to look at the physics of systemic change.

Tolkien intuitively understood the fatal flaw of highly centralised, extractive systems. In The Lord of the Rings, the climax at Mount Doom is the ultimate rejection of individual moral agency. Frodo fails to destroy the Ring. The actual collapse is triggered by Gollum—a purely reactive node driven entirely by his local structural condition. Gollum is not a hero; he is an emergent agent following the path of least resistance.

In a complex system, a highly centralised Siphon generates immense internal friction. The state and the oligarchs spend enormous energy centralising power and enclosing the commons, creating an intensely unstable, high-entropy gradient. But eventually, the differential becomes too extreme.

When a lightning strike occurs, the bolt doesn’t ‘choose’ to strike, nor does it possess moral intent. It is simply the emergent structure that forms to collapse the gradient as rapidly as possible. Building a Brittle Boundary

Thiel and the architects of the modern surveillance state look at the fall of the dark tower and draw the wrong conclusion. They believe Sauron didn’t fail because his architecture was inherently unsustainable; they think he failed because his data ingestion was flawed.

Their solution to systemic instability isn’t to respect biophysical constraints or decentralise power. Their solution is to build a taller lightning rod.

They thought they were regulating the forces of human nature, but realistically, they were merely drawing boundaries. Palantir is the 21st century’s ultimate boundary-drawing tool. It encloses the biophysical commons of the NHS within a computationally perfect map, mistaking that static map for the dynamic, entropic territory of human life.

By attempting to engineer a flawless, airtight system of control over the NHS, they are exponentially increasing the systemic tension. The process of maximising financial return systematically destroys biophysical resilience. Every unit of data enclosed and financialised by the apex is a unit of surplus unavailable to maintain the distributed buffers upon which the metabolic base depends.

We are drifting steadily toward a Resource Entropy Singularity. When the system inevitably encounters a variable it cannot compute—whether that is biophysical exhaustion, a cascade of institutional failures, or a sudden, emergent shift in public non-compliance—the phase transition will not be a managed decline. Because they have coupled the systems so tightly and stripped away the slack, the collapse will be catastrophic. The living territory, in its final, chaotic rebellion against the map, will fracture the brittle, apex-drawn boundary.

In a recent and otherwise excellent essay, Dr Warwick Powell made a compelling case for placing supply chains at the heart of macroeconomic analysis. In Scarcity and Shock Propagation in a World of Nested Supply Chains, he argues that economies are not equilibrium-seeking machines, but rather “evolving metabolisms”. He correctly identifies that economic disturbances propagate horizontally whenever the duration of a shock exceeds the duration of the ‘buffers’ available to absorb it—be that physical inventory, spare manufacturing capacity, or household savings.

From a thermoeconomic perspective, Powell’s horizontal analysis is vital. Yet, it possesses a profound blind spot. It treats the depletion of these buffers as a passive structural vulnerability, rather than an active, targeted extraction.

To understand why the global economy is increasingly fragile, we cannot simply look at how supply chains break down under external shocks. We must ask why the buffers were removed in the first place. This requires looking vertically at what my SETE (Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy) framework calls the Wealth Siphon.

Slack as ‘Unoptimised Capital’

In the comments section of Powell’s piece, a reader asked what would happen if we focused on ‘value chains’ rather than ‘supply chains’. The answer is that we would regress immediately into the ideological trap of the financialised apex. A supply chain is a biophysical reality—it tracks energy, materials, and human time. A ‘value chain’ is a financialised abstraction—it tracks where the profit is captured on a ledger.

The entire modern economic consensus relies on conflating the two. It posits that capital accumulation at the apex is the ‘primary mover’ of the economy. But capital is not itself a source of metabolic energy. It is a symbolic claim upon energy, materials, labour, and time.

A resilient system requires slack. Financial optimisation, however, treats slack as inefficiency. Therefore, the process of maximising financial return systematically destroys biophysical resilience.

From the perspective of the Wealth Siphon, a ‘buffer’ in a horizontal supply chain or a family household is viewed as un-optimised capital. If a family has spare time or savings, or if a hospital has empty beds, or if a factory runs with spare inventory, that is value that has not yet been extracted and monetised. The system is brittle precisely because the apex relentlessly strips away these horizontal buffers—through just-in-time logistics, lean staffing, and household debt—to maximise its vertical yield.

The Topology of Command

When wealth concentrates to the degree we see today, it ceases to be mere purchasing power. Concentrated wealth becomes concentrated command authority.

Once decision-making becomes sufficiently centralised and insulated from local feedback, the specific ideology attached to that decision-making becomes secondary. Despite their obvious ideological differences, both the late-stage USSR and the modern Neoliberal West fell victim to the same systems-topology pathology: both systems concentrated decision-making power into increasingly insulated apex structures that became detached from metabolic reality. The USSR justified allocation through Party doctrine; the Neoliberal West justifies it through capital markets. Both eventually starved their own reproductive foundations.

By contrast, we can look at the ascent of China. China’s development model remains deeply unsustainable in ecological terms, but its rapid rise within the globalised political West demonstrates the sheer power of directing surplus into physical infrastructure rather than immediate financial extraction. China succeeded because, for several decades, it prioritised physical throughput and territorial development—serving the basic metabolic needs of the base—over the speculative financialisation favoured by the West.

Prescriptive Follies

When command authority is concentrated at an insulated apex, resource allocation ceases to be emergent. In a healthy system, energy and resources are directed from the bottom up to maintain and reproduce the system itself. But a hyper-concentrated apex begins prescribing resource flows based on its own internal, often self-referential logic.

We see this everywhere. The massive diversion of biophysical resources into speculative AI datacentres, the enclosure of luxury real estate, endless financial engineering, and orbital infrastructure.

SpaceX is perhaps the ultimate avatar of this dynamic. Firing thousands of tonnes of highly refined materials into low-Earth orbit does not reproduce the societal base. It drains the top tier of human engineering talent away from terrestrial survival problems to satisfy an idiosyncratic vision. We tolerate this because the romantic allure of the ‘frontier’ acts as a biological escape valve. It soothes our deep-seated evolutionary drive for endless expansion, blinding us to the reality that the ‘frontier’ is currently just a mechanism for enclosing the ultimate commons—the sky itself—to facilitate further extraction.

This pathology is not unique to either Stalinism or neoliberalism. In earlier SETE essays I have argued that both emerge from a deeper mechanistic tradition inherited from the Strong Enlightenment: the belief that living systems can be optimally organised through abstract prescription rather than adaptive feedback. Whether one accepts that broader historical argument or not, the common systems-topology remains visible in both cases. They mistake the map for the territory.

The True Fiction

This brings me to a curious phenomenon. Several critics of the SETE framework have attempted to dismiss my thermodynamic analyses of the economy as “good creative fiction.”

In the early 20th century, the literary theorist Viktor Shklovsky argued that the purpose of great art is defamiliarisation. Humans automate their perception to save cognitive energy; economic narratives become invisible assumptions. Good literature forces us to see the world outside of those automated frameworks, exposing the drives that mislead us into rationalising maladaptive behaviour.

Mainstream commentators are thoroughly automated to the Neoliberal map. When you introduce the cold, physical reality of thermodynamic entropy, the monetisation of slack, and the collapse of the metabolic base, you strip away their automated perception. Because exposure to the actual territory feels unreal to them, their defensive reflex is to label the structural critique as fiction.

The question is not whether we use maps, but whether we mistake them for the territory. Those defending the current order are living within a hyper-financialised fiction of fiat ledgers and speculative derivatives.

Beyond the Singularity

From the perspective of SETE, wealth concentration is not simply a distributional problem. It is a terminal thermodynamic pathology. Every unit of surplus concentrated at the apex is surplus unavailable to maintain the distributed buffers upon which systemic resilience depends.

Because the apex cannot voluntarily relinquish its command-power—driven as it is by the maladaptive biological imperative to accumulate—our current global civilisation is locked on an inescapable trajectory toward a Resource Entropy Singularity. The buffers will not be restored; they will be consumed until the metabolism collapses under the weight of its own siphon.

Therefore, the purpose of mapping this thermodynamic reality is not to ‘fix’ the present system. You cannot repair an engine that is explicitly designed to consume its own structure. The purpose is to lay the intellectual groundwork for a future culture.

When the current financialised fiction finally exhausts its physical substrate, whatever society emerges from the bottleneck must be architected on fundamentally different principles. It must wholly reject the mechanistic delusion of the Strong Enlightenment. It must view the hyper-concentration of wealth not as a metric of progress, but as a catastrophic systems failure. Most importantly, it must recognise that true wealth is not the ability to command the future from an insulated apex, but the capacity to reproduce the metabolic base—the family, the community, and the local buffers—in harmony with the physical limits of the Earth.

With the recent IPO of SpaceX pushing Elon Musk’s net worth past the $1 trillion mark, the inevitable wave of NGO statistics has flooded the discourse. The most pervasive of these claims is that the world’s first trillionaire now possesses more wealth than the bottom 46% of the global population combined.

It is a rhetorically powerful statistic, designed to shock the conscience. But as an analytical tool, it is not just flawed—it is actively deceptive. It relies on a fundamental category error that obscures the true nature of the modern global economy. The reality isn’t that the bottom 46% have ‘less wealth’ than a trillionaire. The reality is that the bottom 46% do not possess ‘wealth’ at all.

They possess survival inventory, and the system is systematically cannibalising it.

The Fallacy of Aggregated ‘Net Worth’

To arrive at the conclusion that 3.8 billion people possess roughly $1.2 trillion in aggregate wealth, economists use a metric called ‘net worth’. They tally up the value of tin roofs, livestock, bicycles, and basic tools, subtract the micro-loans and informal debts required to buy food or medicine, and sum the result.

This is analytically incoherent. It treats the global economy as a single, uniform ledger where a subsistence farmer’s goat and a billionaire’s equity are entirely fungible assets.

But wealth, in any meaningful geopolitical or economic sense, is the ability to command future resources. If you have a claim on the energy, labour, and materials of next year, you possess surplus capital. If you cannot actualise a claim on the future—because every asset you hold is strictly necessary to keep you alive today—you do not have ‘net worth’. You have a metabolic baseline.

The $1.2 trillion attributed to the bottom 46% is not a pool of surplus capital waiting to be deployed. Those 3.8 billion people do not pool their resources. They subsist. To suggest that Musk’s liquid, market-denominated power-capital is functionally equivalent to the aggregate replacement cost of the survival assets of half of humanity is to fundamentally misunderstand what capital is. One is active, offensive command-power; the other is passive, defensive survival matter.

The Erasure of Class

Why do intelligent economists continue to publish these misleading aggregates? Because doing otherwise would require acknowledging the existence of Class.

Since the late 19th century, mainstream economics has been gripped by ‘methodological individualism’—the assumption that the economy is just a flat plane of rational, utility-maximising individuals. This deliberate flattening of reality ignores the self-organising structures that actually govern human life: cartels, unions, cooperatives, and the family.

The political spectrum has converged on this erasure, albeit from opposite ends. The moderate right blinds itself by fixating on the ‘sacred’ firm and the individual, ignoring how these structures cannibalise the families and communities they claim to defend. Conversely, the moderate liberal left has retreated into the narrow corridors of personal identity, effectively abandoning material analysis entirely. By reducing all political grievance to the realm of individual identity, the modern left has made itself just as incapable as the right of seeing the structural siphon beneath the surface.

Both sides ignore the family as the primary metabolic unit of society; it acts as the ultimate buffer against entropy when the market or the state fails. Yet, in the eyes of standard economic modelling—and both political camps—the family is merely a ‘unit of consumption’ or a ‘private sphere’ unworthy of systemic analysis.

The Death of Moral Sentiments

When Adam Smith formulated his theories, the ‘invisible hand’ was embedded within the strict ethical boundaries of his Theory of Moral Sentiments. The market was a collaborative tool meant to serve the public good.

Today, stripped of that moral substrate, the firm is viewed simply as an entity to maximise profit. But in an era where biophysical flows are increasingly constrained, ‘maximising profit’ almost invariably means extracting from the public good. It means stagnating wages, pushing the costs of social reproduction onto debt-burdened families, and converting the metabolic energy of the base into the financialised capital of the apex.

When a firm successfully extracts value by exhausting the local community or forcing a two-income family to work longer hours just to maintain their caloric and housing needs, the system records this as an increase in GDP. It is, in reality, a thermodynamic extraction.

The Wealth Siphon

Elon Musk’s ascension to trillionaire status is not an aberration, nor is it simply the reward for extreme innovation. It is the mathematical inevitability of a system that has decoupled its financial apex from its metabolic base.

In my work mapping Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE), I track what I call the ‘wealth siphon’. This siphon does not just transfer dollars; it appropriates time, biophysical capacity, and future potential from the lower tiers of the system to feed the top. The fact that one individual now controls a node of capital equivalent to the existential requirements of four billion people signals a severe metabolic decoherence.

Your evolutionary programming violently seizes control of your nervous system, and you do the only thing your primate brain knows how to do in the microseconds before impact:

This is the blink reflex. It is an autonomic defence mechanism designed to protect the most vital, fragile instruments we possess. But what happens when this physiological response scales up to an entire civilisation? What happens when the fist isn’t flesh and bone, but an incoming thermodynamic phase change?

This week, we watched the global political economy flinch.

The simultaneous dismantling of the oceanic sensors1, the deliberate defunding of legacy climate monitoring networks, and the sudden, theatrical announcement of ‘The Genesis Mission2’—an initiative selling frictionless AI algorithmic simulation as a substitute for harsh physical reality—are not isolated events. The aggressive pivot towards using Artificial Intelligence as a ‘replacement’ for hard, empirical environmental science is not merely a cost-saving measure or a Silicon Valley grift.

It is an exercise in total Information Occlusion.

In my recent paper on the Socio-Economic Thermodynamic Entropy (SETE 2.0) model, I formalised this dynamic as the Information Siphon. When a complex adaptive system is algorithmically locked into a goal of endless expansion, its most existential threat isn’t just resource depletion—it is the data of that depletion. When the informational map (financialised growth) radically diverges from the biophysical territory (ecological collapse), the system must reconcile the contradiction. Because it cannot change its trajectory without risking immediate systemic collapse, it opts for the path of least computational resistance: it destroys the measurement apparatus.

We are literally masking our dashboard because the warning lights are demanding an impossible amount of exergy—usable energy—to process.

And those warning lights are blinding. If you know where to look—or rather, if you remember what was there before the sensors were unplugged—the reality of our biophysical trajectory is undeniable:

The Sentinel-5P Methane Data

Before the deliberate degradation of our observational capacities, the Sentinel-5P satellite telemetry was capturing a deeply concerning narrative. In fact, I only noticed the true scale of this departure—a terrifying step change in the methane levels compared to last year—because I was actively hunting for something else. I was looking for orbital evidence of out-gassing resulting from the kinetic disruption of operations in the Middle East.

When you look at the raw data, it becomes clear that the models, built on historical assumptions of gradual, linear emissions, are breaking down in real-time. The terrifying reality of tracking methane is that it is notoriously difficult to get an accurate read on exact emission volumes. Atmospheric concentration isn’t simply a measure of what we pump out; it is actively moderated by the availability of the hydroxyl radical sink. Crucially, hydroxyl availability is not an independent variable.

This immense, non-linear complexity creates a fog of scientific ambiguity. When the hydroxyl sink gets depleted—a dynamic now likely dominated by the rising incidence and scale of global wildfires consuming the radicals3—the methane simply lingers and accumulates. We are watching a terrifying, compounding feedback loop in real-time: the planet burns, the fires exhaust our atmospheric scrubber, and the massive out-gassing from places like the Gulf and decomposing clathrates hits the atmosphere unchecked. We are witnessing the biophysical territory radically departing from the accepted map, but because the exact mechanics are tangled in interdependent variables, it provides the perfect cognitive cover.

The Persian Gulf

This brings us to the ground truth of that kinetic destruction. The attacks on extraction infrastructure in the Persian Gulf have fundamentally fractured the spatial routing networks of global exergy, but the immediate biophysical implications extend far beyond supply-chain economics. The kinetic damage hasn’t neatly capped the wells—it has violently cracked them open.

The volatile gases previously destined for controlled combustion are now venting directly into the atmosphere. The immediate, observable effect of this uncontrolled out-gassing isn’t a uniform global rise, but massive regional increases of methane in the atmospheric air column. This invisible tide is actively mixing into the air over South Asia—a subsystem that is currently buckling under a catastrophic, 50°C (122°F) high-pressure heat dome. As I write this, 95 of the world’s 100 hottest cities are in India4. We are taking a massive new pulse of unburned exergy waste and injecting it directly into an atmospheric oven, guaranteeing the regional heat retention loop accelerates before it even has time to disperse globally.

Crucially, given the geopolitical chaos, the degraded local monitoring, and the sheer scale of the structural damage, it is highly likely we will never possess accurate figures on the true volume of this atmospheric bleed. The system is haemorrhaging, and we have deliberately thrown away the measuring cup.

Marine Clathrates and Permafrost

The systemic decomposition of the Earth’s frozen carbon sinks is rapidly moving from a theoretical tipping point into an active, positive feedback loop. For decades, the release of methane from marine clathrates and thawing permafrost was modelled as a distant, abstract threat. The dismantling of the deep-sea acoustic and temperature sensor networks ensures we will no longer hear or see the physical bubbling of this release. We are blinding ourselves precisely at the moment the frozen structural memory of the Holocene is entering a violent, irreversible phase change.

Legacy Production Wells

We are standing atop a subterranean collapse of our own historical making. The massive surge in drilling 50+ years ago—fuelled by the post-war economic boom—left us with hundreds of thousands of abandoned wells. The concrete linings meant to seal these shafts were engineered for a human lifespan, not a geological epoch. Those linings are currently decaying, effectively turning the Earth’s crust into a porous, leaking sponge of volatile gases. It is a slow-motion structural unravelling beneath our feet, a legacy debt of our past exergy consumption that is now coming due.

All of this compounding biophysical unravelling is now colliding with the macro-forcings of a stalling Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the Super El Niño forecast for this year. This is the final, violent push needed to force the Earth-system into a terminal phase change.

The terrifying reality is that the broader population already knows this.

You do not need to understand the mathematics of Metabolic Decoherence or read the output of a deep-sea temperature sensor to feel the gravity of the Entropic Event Horizon. Knowledge of these factors permeates the subconscious of the global population. It triggers a profound, suffocating environmental anxiety.

But we fundamentally misunderstand how humans process this anxiety. Our dominant cultural narrative—what I term the ‘Strong Enlightenment’ paradigm—wrongly assumes that if you show a rational actor the data of their impending doom, they will logically adjust their behaviour to avoid it. We assume that environmental terror will manifest as environmental stewardship.

It doesn’t. When the threat is perceived as terminal and unavoidable, anxiety expresses as denial.

People are only performatively shocked by the defunding of the climate networks. We post our outrage, we write our think pieces, and we lament the loss of the data. But underneath the performative shock, there is a collective, subconscious sigh of relief. If the oceanic sensors are off, we don’t have to watch the temperature rise. If AI models replace empirical science, we can program the algorithms to hallucinate a future where the maths somehow works out.

The system is blinding itself, and we are letting it, because looking at the fist doesn’t stop it from hitting you. We are crossing the boundary of viable phase-space, and society has made its final, collective decision: we are bracing for the impact, and keeping our eyes tightly shut.

If you have spent any time in the trenches of the open-source community recently, you will have noticed a rather spectacular conflagration surrounding rsync.

The spark was simple: Andrew ‘Tridge’ Tridgell—the legendary systems programmer and original author of rsync—returned to the project to clear a massive backlog of CVEs. Working largely alone, Tridge employed Claude, Anthropic’s LLM, as a co-author to help bash through the workload. The AI generated patches, the tests passed, the code merged.

Then came the regressions. Subtle, architectural breakages began to surface in edge cases, symlink translations, and cross-platform builds. The internet mob descended, pitchforks raised, declaring that AI had poisoned a piece of foundational infrastructure.

But pointing the finger at Claude—or at an exhausted maintainer trying to keep a 30-year-old project alive—misses the forest for the trees. Whether the immediate regressions were caused by AI hallucination, review failures, or simple human error is ultimately secondary. The specific bugs are merely a symptom.

This is actually a story about structural entropy, the conservation of complexity, and what happens when a system crosses its own Entropic Event Horizon.

To understand why rsync is breaking, we have to rewind to 1989, to a fundamental schism in how we build software, and look at the physical limits of complexity itself.

The Blacksmith and the Conservation of Complexity

In his famous 1989 essay, the Lisp programmer Richard Gabriel observed a disturbing trend: elegantly designed software kept losing out to cruder, simpler implementations. He called this phenomenon ‘Worse is Better’.

Gabriel identified two competing tendencies in software design. On the East Coast was the ‘MIT Style’ (what he called ‘The Right Thing’): systems must be perfect, interfaces must be beautiful, and the underlying implementation must handle all the complex edge-cases invisibly so the user does not have to.

On the West Coast, born out of Bell Labs in New Jersey, was the ‘UNIX Style’: keep the implementation simple. If handling an edge-case makes the system too complicated, throw an error code and force the programmer to deal with it.

Gabriel despaired that the ‘Worse’ New Jersey style was spreading like a virus. But Gabriel’s premise relied on a subtle misconception. He assumed that pushing complexity onto the user was a failure of design.

Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, the architects of UNIX, understood something profound: complexity cannot be destroyed; it can only be redistributed. The genius of pure UNIX was the realisation that the required skillset of the operator must be higher than the skillset required to write the tools. Think of it like a blacksmith. A hammer does not need to understand the structural dynamics of a horseshoe; it only needs to transfer force efficiently. The total complexity required to solve a problem is conserved; it exists entirely in the mind and the hands of the operator.

If a system tries to absorb all the complexity internally to provide ‘MIT Magic’ to an unskilled user, that complexity doesn’t vanish. It is simply transferred from the user to the maintainer.

The Thermodynamic Cost of ‘MIT Magic’

This brings us back to rsync.

At its inception, rsync was a beautiful, UNIX-style tool designed to do one thing perfectly: delta-encode a file over a low-bandwidth pipe. But over three decades, driven by a modern culture that demands frictionless abstractions, rsync mutated. It absorbed network daemons, SSH wrappers, complex regex parsers, and labyrinthine permissions logic. It stopped being a hammer and tried to become the blacksmith.

In my theoretical work mapping the thermodynamics of complex systems (SETE 2.0), I define a metric called Informational Density. It represents the concentration of stateful, structural information a system must maintain to preserve its internal coherence. Maintaining high Informational Density requires continuous thermodynamic work, which we can call Maintenance Power (P_maint).

As rsync grew into an entangled monolith, its Informational Density skyrocketed. The tacit knowledge required to safely modify it—understanding how a symlink patch might create a race condition in the daemon’s networking code—became immense.

The Asymptote of Maintenance

The scaling of maintenance effort (P_maint) against monolithic complexity is not linear; it faces a brutal asymptote.

As informational density rises, the population capable of understanding the whole system shrinks. Eventually, the system reaches a state where no individual maintainer possesses a complete internal model. At that point, every modification becomes statistically exploratory rather than intentional. The system may continue functioning for years, but its evolution has crossed an event horizon; architectural coherence can no longer be guaranteed.

For a massive corporation, that asymptote might be delayed by throwing vast amounts of capital at the problem. But for a single contributor like Tridge, rsync had hit this entropy wall. The required P_maint to safely navigate the codebase vastly exceeded the cognitive bandwidth of one human being.

The system entered what I term Metabolic Decoherence. Tridge turning to Claude was not a lapse in judgement; it was a desperate attempt to synthesize the circulating maintenance power he lacked, slamming headfirst into a hard biophysical limit.

The LLM Catalyst

So, why did the AI accelerate the decoherence?

Large Language Models can temporarily subsidise maintenance power—they can automate tests, generate boilerplate, and assist with refactoring—but they cannot eliminate the underlying growth of informational density. They are stateless engines. If you feed an LLM a failing test, it will rewrite the code in the statistically most probable way to make the light turn green, completely blind to the unwritten architectural invariants of the system.

The software industry has spent the last two decades under the dangerous assumption that code is its own documentation, and that CI/CD pipelines are an adequate substitute for design specifications. They are not. A test suite only verifies binary behaviour; it cannot explain intent.

When you apply a stateless LLM to a highly entangled system pushing the asymptote of maintainability, it executes the digital equivalent of rogue agency.
