With almost 20+ years of having my own, ever-evolving folk magick practice, and being an online creator with in the occult and witchcraft community for 10, I’d say I have a fair share of experience of, not only my own imposter syndrome, but witnessing so many others struggle with the same perspective.

I believe that there are a number of factors to why imposter syndrome seems so rampant these days, and one of the largest contributing factors would be social media. We see imposter syndrome show up in all communities, not just the occult. Rather than only having the in-person community to compare ourselves to, now we have instant access to an endless feed of curated photos and scripted videos to show us just how much we’re “not doing” and all the things we “need” to feel like our magical practice is good enough.

I understand the irony of me, someone who takes part in the machine of social media professionally, posting something like this. However, I think it’s important to acknowledge the growing feeling everyone seems to be collectively feeling. I love aesthetic spellwork and rituals, and I do think they play a big part, of making it intentionally beautiful, especially when it’s presented as an offering, but this problem is not purely on aesthetics alone. This is in people feeling like their own personal journey doesn’t mean as much as the one they’re seeing displayed online.

Am I doing enough? Am I doing too much? Is it supposed to feel… more magical? This isn’t as fantastic as my expectations, maybe I’m doing something wrong. Was that a sign or am I looking too deep into things? Am I not “tapped in” enough? Are these the wrong offerings? Do my ancestors/spirits/deities dislike my offerings/rituals? Am I doing this wrong? What if I stumbled over my words?

We all know these thoughts and feelings. So how do we combat this? For me, the most important thing to ask is, “does it work?” This is why it’s important to document it all. If I see results from something I’m doing, it’s working, regardless if it “felt witchy” while I was doing it or not. This is something that I find hard to share online, because it’s so mundane feeling; but my magickal practice is my mundane. It’s rarely something that looks magickal, because the energy work is being worked into something most of us do every day. From when I wake up, I decide where my and the surrounding energy goes and how it moves.

Examples would be how I prepare my coffee in the morning, deciding to ground myself first, instead of hopping on social media immediately, choosing the music I workout or stretch to, curating my outfit, jewelry(charmed) and makeup(also charmed) for the day, wearing magical oils, the music I listen to while out, cleansing myself when I return home and showering.

Comparing ourselves to others practices online has resulted in people assuming they must have certain credentials or reach a certain “level” of practicing to be considered “enough.” In reality, almost every practitioner out there does not nor do they need to be planning or working to become the head of a coven, the priestess, a teacher or initiated into anything to have a practice that enriches their life. The core of having a magickal practice should be to enrich your life. If it doesn’t do that, then what’s the point? We are pushed to monetize everything, even something as personal and sacred as this. Not every reading needs to cost money. Not every oil or tincture or tea. Sometimes, things can just be given to someone as a gift. I consider them offerings for their time, knowledge, friendship, anything. I allow my intuition to guide me on the when and who, but I love giving things away for free, because my craft is meant to make my life better, and hopefully as a byproduct, make the lives around me better too.

I’ll make another rant about how folk magick has become commodified and the essence of community and healing has been sucked from it some other time, but in the mean time, here’s a bit of a brain dump for you. Monthly challenge: Tarot in spellwork

One of the first tools many beginners gravitate towards and have at access are tarot cards. Many are taught that tarot cards as the first tool for divination, but tarot(and oracle) can be used in so many other ways.

First, having a good understanding of the energies each card brings is important, because that specific energy will be what is harnessed when applying it to spellwork. Imagery is, and always has been, important in magic, and this is no different. This means, that each deck with different imagery holds slightly different energy, so just as one may interpret the same card from different decks slightly differently, choosing which deck to work with can have an impact as well.

Ways to begin using tarot in magic:

• Placing cards on corresponding altars

• Under candles, under a pillow, or carrying with you just as you would a crystal or written charm

• You may choose to use an old deck, or print out tarot cards to add them to the outside of a glass candle

• Place a tarot card at the center of a spell, and as energy is raised, embody the energy of that tarot card, or send that energy into something else that you can then carry as a charm

• You can choose to reverse a card to apply that energy, or to “drain” that specific energy from a chosen source or target.

Add an extra layer to a written charm or a petition for a spell by using an old deck or printing out the desired card and using it as the paper to write on, dressing it with oils and packing it with herbs.

Creating a Ritual & Spell With a Tarot Spread

Use this tarot spread and try this experimental spell. Use the tarot spread above, and for each card pulled, create a physcial spell that will better align with the outcome desired and card pulled. For example, if I were to want to become more magnetic to curate better connections and friendships, I would pull these three cards. For the left card, I pull The Empress. This tells me I need the energy of being confident in myself and stable, having a good foundation to build relationships on first. This is the card I may carry with me as a micro enchantment, but this card is really just to give a direction and energy to recognize what to put into this spell.

For the top, I pull Eight of Pentacles. This will be my macro enchantment. I would likely create a larger, long term ritual for this, something to nurture and continuously work. I could go simple and do a brown or green candle, or I could use a small, potted plant that blooms beautiful, fragrant flowers that correlate with attraction, and water it with moon water or an essence.

For the right card, this is my micro enchantment for this goal - something small I will do to upkeep this energy on a smaller scale, adding layers slowly instead of banking on one large ritual to do the job. This is the supporting spells to my ritual. I pull Eight of Wands. This could be one thing, or multiple things, such as enchanting a necklace to attract meaningful conversations, a lipstick or chapstick to charm my words, an attraction oil worn everyday, or a sigil in my pockets or shoes, and add a fire or air element depending on what I’d like to see from my connections.

On my mom’s side, I have Irish and Scottish ancestry. As someone who is interested in reconnection through ancestral ties and pre-colonial practices, my first visit to Ireland didn’t disappoint. The biggest theme for me was reconnection through specifically the method of crafts and art. Multiple examples came up, such as quilting, knitting, and crochet, sketching, photography, gardening, herbalism, baking and ceramics.

Sketching and photography, both documenting very important perspectives and voices that were otherwise silenced in media during wars around the world. An example, is a sketchbook of a solider from World War I¹ and the conditions of their deployment. Photography, I learned specifically the Vest Pocket Kodak² that was released in 1912 while visiting the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks.

It was a revolutionary camera, as this was one of the first public cameras that was literally pocket sized, about the size of a smartphone, able to compact and become travel-friendly, allowing photographers to sneak their photos into otherwise prohibited areas, and in turn, showcasing the suffering of those voices the media was ignoring.

Then, I was lucky enough to have been hosted by a potter, named Niahm, who was currently working with a heritage society who were hiring people skilled in their trades to help restore the abbeys with traditional methods, staying as close to the original methods and designs as possible during every step of restoration. She took me to a graveyard where my last ancestors before immigration were buried. There was a large, old abbey that stood in ruins, and she pointed out how it would have looked before all the time passed, her trained eye picking out details I never would have spotted.

While she worked in her studio, I only watched and asked a plethora of questions, she did teach me some basics of pottery, showing me how to slab build and work on the throwing wheel. She also was gifted a huge lump some of clay from an old local oak farm. My first thought was how great it would be to make offering bowls or something for the land spirits from it. Endless possibilities.

I experimented and made a handful of items, from mugs and bowls to mini travel altars that would hold incense sticks or flowers. It was so fun to be a part of every step. The process of how something is made has always given me so much more appreciation for the end result, and so many ideas on how to make things more intentionally and personalized.

Lastly, textiles. During my visit to the Botanic Gardens in Dublin, there was an exhibit of pieces from local quilters. The first thing that comes to mind for me when I think about quilts, is their huge role during the American Civil War and the Underground Railroad³. I also had just finished this podcast episode all about quilts, so I had a deeper appreciation for the curation, time and craftsmanship that quilting took, as well as how much it connects the maker(and user) to their ancestry.

Ireland is vast in its weavers and spinners, which makes sense as Ireland is well known for its population in sheep. My host had a whole closet full of yarn, spun by a weaver who’d since passed away, and was now at my access. I had my own crochet hooks with me, including the one given to me by my grandmother who was the one who originally taught me to crochet well over 20 years ago. I was also provided a pair of knitting needles. I’d only ever knit once, and that was also over 20 years ago, but I never picked it up. So, I decided I’d give it another go.

Knitting, too, has its secret codes in World War I, and this tradition of the importance of knitters continued to World War II⁴. I didn’t get very far, but I learned more this time around and once I have my own pair of needles, and more than a few weeks in one spot, perhaps I will take up my first full knitting project in the future.

Crochet, however, has always been a part of my life since I was a child. Learning from my grandmother is one of the few memories I have of my childhood, sitting next to her in the dark house in the middle of the desert of New Mexico, carefully watching her pull through each loop and explaining how to make a drink cozy. She taught me the foundations; how to chain, to slip stitch, single crochet, and double crochet(we were of course using US terms). With this new world of creation opening up to me, the whole road trip home, I was completely occupied by a single ball of yarn and this golden 4mm hook my grandmother had let me keep from her collection.

I made the ugliest ‘blanket,’ that ended up looking more like a circle skirt, lopsided and no consistency in sight. I think my mom still has the sad thing hidden away in a tub somewhere.

Now, every time I pick up a crochet hook, knitting needles or sew, I always think of my grandmothers, and I feel the thread, literally and spiritually, connecting us. My mom taught me to be creative, and use the things we had to create what we needed and wanted. She didn’t grow up with a lot of money, and neither did I, but she gave me an eye for thrifting, seeing potential, and the tools and confidence to see projects through.

Crochet itself has a significance in specifically Irish history. Crochet became a more affordable and accessible option to lace, which was much more expensive to purchase and took pricier materials and significantly longer time to create. When the famine hit, many Irish women took up crochet, the specific style known today as Irish Crochet Lace, and sold their pieces to make income, giving the women a bit of financial independence, and a way to support themselves and their families through the famine⁵.

While I am lucky enough to crochet, knit, quilt, create sketches, photos and pottery all on my own terms and out of pure inspiration and creativity, I always thank those who came before me who paved the way for that freedom, to be able to do these things out of want and not necessity, and thank those who used what they knew to aid others in revolution and document the voices that would have otherwise gone unheard.

Reconnection often looks like this: subtle threads that are noticed, and it’s the action of learning and continuing the traditions and crafts that were given to us from those before us.

Monthly challenge: Local Spirits

Most of my personal craft revolves around the local spirits of the place I am in. At the moment, I travel full time, so this has become very interesting to work with new spirits so often.

I have a video talking about the topic here, but really the local spirits are exactly as the name suggests: spirits local to your area. Here are a few examples of local spirits you may come across:

• Nature spirits: The plant allies, large tree guardians, river spirits, mountains, boulders, rocks, lakes etc.

• Genius loci: Spirits of a place. Each city has it’s own spirit, as well as each neighborhood. Even the spirit of a shop or cafe, or the spirit of a national forest. The spirit of a cemetery or a church as a whole is included in this as well.

• Spirits of the Dead: Those buried in your local cemeteries and graveyards.

• Folklore: These are spirits that are whispered about by the locals, but are specific to the area. The Jersey Devil from New Jersey, the Loch Ness Monster, or Mothman in Pensilvania, as a few examples. They can be regional or even just specific to the town.

In his book Consorting with Spirits, Jason Miller mentions a moment where he calls out to a local spirit to aid him, rather than a greek goddess that originates oceans away. Think about how much more the local spirits are going to understand and care about your issue, especially if it affects the land or community, compared to a spirit that has no connection there whatsoever. I think of it as, the people of a town are going to care and take a lot more action on a local issue than someone in the house of representatives. Calling Supreme court judges on a local issue will likely get you nowhere, but the locals will have passion and action in them, I loved his explanation, because this is exactly why I think local spirits are so helpful.

Make the Connection

Establishing connection is the first step. Heading in with a simple offering is always the best way to go, if you’re simply trying to say hello and get noticed. A large offering right off the bat may set some expectations you’re not willing to fulfill every time, but if you’re immediately asking for aid or help, then the payment may be necessary. Water libations, energy exchange, picking up trash, small bits of poetry, song or story, etc. Sometimes, spirits will be the first to reach out to you, so keep an eye out for a plant catching your eye multiple times, a specific grave pulling you, or a place that feels interesting or familiar.

Keep the Connection

This is prehaps the most important part. KEEP the connection. You are not making connections simply so that you are networking to have a string of spiritual “employees,” but rather you are greeting your nieghbors and treating them as friends and family. These should be spirits you feel connected to, that you enjoy going out to meet and say hello to. This may be daily, weekly, or even monthly. Just as human relationships, spirit relationships will all have their varying degree of time catering to them.

Local spirits will have specific knowledge to give to you, about the land, the people, the place, and sometimes the allies around you. When I was still living in Colorado, I drove 3 hours to visit a cemetery I’d never been to way out in the mountains. Once I got there, I began walking up the road, as the cemetery gates were just around the bend behind the treeline. Both the person I was with and myself stopped at the same time, only about 2 meters in, looked at each other, and agreed to head home, never even seeing the cemetery gates. Years later, we spoke about it, agreeing that it felt as if the trees themselves were warning us to turn back, that it was not a good idea to enter.

You will likely get more localized protection, more specific results and if you maintain great relationships, you will likely find yourself becoming extremely lucky and abundant as your relationships with these spirits thrive.

Monthly challenge: Pendulums

What you’ll need:

• a chain or string

• something small and slightly weighted

That’s all you’ll need for a pendulum, should you not have on hand. You can use a pendulum you’ve purchased, a necklace with a charm, or make your own with yarn or a necklast chain and attach a charm to it, just that gives some weight to it when held up.

Programming your pendulum:

After you’ve of course cleansed it, you’ll need to program it. Hold your pendulum steady, find a position for it in your hand that is comfortable. Say hello, and tell it your name. Then say, “show me yes.” The pendulum should begin to move in a repetative direction. Thank it. Then say, “show me no.” The pendulum should move in another repetative direction. Thank it. Now, you have seen what your pendlum has decided is yes and no for it.

After this, you’ll ask questions you know the answer to, to be sure your pendulum is working properly. Ask questions such as, “is my name ____?” “Are my eyes green?” “Did I have chammomile tea this morning?” And the pendulum should swing to give you the correct answers to these questions. If not, cleanse the pendulum once more, and try again. If this still does not work, it may be that the pendulum does not wish to work with you. You will have to create or find a new one.

How to use:

Pendulums are versitile and really can answer anything with a yes/no question or give you a direction in which way to physically go. Here are some of my favorite ways I’ve used my pendulums:

• Finding lost objects

• Making on-the-go decisions(even where to eat or what coffee to order)

• Picking tarot cards over a spread deck

• Communication with spirits

• Leading me to a grave/spirit that wants to work with me

Below are some things I will also use pendulums with, and they are easy enough to draw or write on a scrap paper or keep a spread to turn to inside your grimoire. There is an printable, downloadable version attached below.

Monthly challenge: Poppet making

Poppets, dolls, dollies, effigies, fetishes, and so many other names for this type of magic, poppets are one of the most versitile and creative ways of weaving magic with a deep history and have a place in every pre-colonial practice all around the world. There is no one way that poppets have been used, and the more creative you get, the more uses you will find for them. Personally, poppet magic is one of my favorite ways of crafting spells, because they are so powerful and allow so much room for creative freedom.

While, unsurpisingly, poppet magic has been popularized and demonized from the Voodoo traditions, poppets have been historically used in healing work, unlike the popular idea of the “cursed voodoo doll” we see in mainstream media.

This month, I challenge you to create a poppet, and put it to use. Here are the basics of what you’ll need to know to create a poppet:

• Who will the poppet represent?

• What is the poppets purpose(healing, attraction, dreams, spirit house, harm, love, etc.)?

• What materials do you have/want to create the poppet with?

When creating the main body, what would make the most sense? A paper cut out would work great for something quick and accessible, covered in sigils or writing, or hollowing out a stuffed animal or doll. Food is a good option for something that needs to be offered, left outside, or literally consumed, such as bread, cookies, cake, or potatoes, apples, carrots, etc that can be carved. Paper mâchet, or clay are good options for something crafty and moldable. And of course, you can go with the most popular version of the poppet, a fabric doll hand sewn together. What you put inside the poppet(if anything) is up to you.

Once you create your poppet, you must breathe life into it. There are many variations of how to do this, but here is a very basic way that is easy to modify as you see fit:

Blow a breath onto the poppets face, then stating: “I breath life into you, and breath a spirit into you.”

Blow another breath: “You are now (name of person) born (birthday). What happens to you happens to them.”

Blow another breath: “You are connected to the life, spirit, body and essence of (persons name) born (birthday). What I do to you, I do to them. What you feel, they feel. What happens to you, happens to them. So it is.”

Here are some simple spells:

• Create a doll that you physically lift fron a shelf or up one stair at a time to give someone an emotional “boost.”

• Put a poppet with a taglock(a physical piece of that person) on your money altar, and give it money oils, incense, coins, etc, to have wealth attract to that person.

• Bind the poppet’s limbs with yarn or ribbon to stop a person from doing harm.

• Place the doll behind to toilet to have someone placed in a “shit situation.”

• Feed a doll made of birdseed to the birds to have them ‘torn apart’ or a compostable doll left in nature to rot.

• Make a poppet that gets treated well, complimented, sprayed with purfume, etc, to give that target glamors and confidence.

• Make a poppet of a person as a magicak decoy, so that any negative energy or spells sent to that person hit that doll first, instead of them.

Things to remember:

When making a poppet, keeping the spirit “alive” in the doll is important. This will differ on how you use the doll, and if you intend for it to be single use spell, or if it will be something that is worked again and again. In this case, be sure to “feed” your doll, be this with water, oils, incense, breath, whatever it may be. Lastly, if this is a doll you plan to work multiple times, be sure to release the spirit once you are finished with the spell, as sometimes this can cause complications later on.

Divination methods. Choose one or more divination methods you’d like to experiment with or try out for the first time and make time to give them a go. Divination is often treated as “an event” but for the consistent practitioner, it is the first thing they reach for when seeking clarity, no big pre-ritual to do so.

Our focus, is to crate a divination system that not only becomes comfortable and accessible, but something we see results and practical guidance in. You may choose to use this focus to define your current divination practice, or choose to try a method that is completely new and foreign to you. Here are some options:

• tea leaf/coffee grounds reading

• playing cards

• trinket/bone throwing

• divining with nature(birds, clouds, rocks, sticks, patterns in insects and dirt, etc.)

• scrying

• candle wax reading

• pendulum

• dice

• create your own dice/oracle

• Feel free to leave any other ideas in the comments

For Beginners:

Choose one method that you find interesting and do a quick history check of where the method comes from and how it’s traditionally used. Begin with the tools needed, and make time for using this divination whenever you can. Try with different ways of structuring your questions, as well as noting how the tool works best for you. Is it best at giving clarity? Spirit communication? Do specific spirits prefer to use it? Is it a ritualistic type, or more of a casual divination style?

It’s recommended to keep notes of all your reading sessions, with as many details and dates as possible.

Leveling It Up:

Creating your own tool for divination can be both ritualistic and very connecting for a practitioner. I personally have made dice with the Baybayin alphabet on it, and used it in a oracle-style reading with my ancestors on my Filipino side, and a small set of hagstones and sticks for my Irish-Scottish side with rune markings. You may choose to do something similar, or if you are working with a specific deity or spirit, dedicating and personalizing a divination tool for them specifically.

You may also choose to combine divination tactics, such as pulling a tarot or oracle card, and then scrying with that card in mind. This could also look like spreading out your tarot deck and using a pendulum to choose a card or part of a split deck. I have also seen a question written on paper, then burned and the flame scryed with, or seeing how the paper burns.

This month’s focus is perimeter protection. This may be something incredibly basic to some, and completely new to others, but I find that this specific type of protection is incredibly helpful - especially when you are trying to cast protection for a large area or space, like a neighborhood or even a city zone.

I vaguely remember this large-area protection being called something line “zone rites.” There are endless ways to go about this, as there always are with something such as magic, but the basics is this: finding key points on the border of the area you wish to protect, and placing protection charms at each of those points, incasing the area you wish to protect. Most often, this works significantly better if you have a relationship with the local spirits, or the genius loci of the city.

Find the points

First things first, you’ll want to map out the area you’re focusing on. It could be a large building like a library or a school, or it could be entire neighborhoods. Take a day to get to the borders of the area, making note of spirits you come into contact with that may be willing to help, as well as spots that look good to deploy a charm of your choosing. For a building, it shouldn’t be difficult as you’re just going around the outside. For a neighborhood, I find that it helps to map it on a physical map, or dropping pins in a map app. You could go classic with it and do a 5-point star shape. One of the examples below is from an Outback Steakhouse conspiracy in New York, but I call it magical marketing.

Once you’ve mapped out these spots, it’s time to make your charms.

For beginners:

For the most simple version, you can gather coins, and charge them with protective energy, anoint them with oils or waters, and then place them in each designated spot. Be sure to hide them well, as you don’t want these coins to move. Drop these at the points in a clock-wise direction if you’re able.

Leveling it up:

Create some kind of charm bag that you are able to hide in each point, being sure to leave offerings to the spirits who have agreed to aid you. Dead wasps(for defensive protection should anyone disturb the “nest”), red brick dust, iron nails & thorns from native speces are all fantastic additions. Make a contract with the spirits you drop these off at and be sure to follow through on your offerings. This depends on your ability and how heavy you want these defenses, but you could make the deal to leave offerings once a month on a moon cycle, or every 3-6 months. Make sure you’re signing a contract you can actually keep up with.
