A version of our Summer Suitcase series, but this time a slightly deeper dive into Matteau one of, if not my favourite, resort and swimwear brands, co-founded by the chicest Ilona Hamer.

Below, we talk about the beginnings of Matteau, Ilona’s approach to personal style, why the best wardrobes aren’t built around trends, the places and people that have shaped the brand, and what she actually packs and wears when she travels.

TYW: Before launching Matteau, what did you feel was missing from the swimwear market?

Ilona: It seems hard to believe now, but at the time (we started development in late 2010) there really weren’t a lot of simple swimwear brands in the market. In Australia it was mostly dominated by very commercial traditional beach brands, not brands that had a fashion/style point of view. We wanted to create something that felt like a reflection of what we wanted in swimwear and form a brand and drawing on our family heritage and simplicity.

TYW: How do you know when a design is finished?

Ilona: When it feels right. When it feels like we have already made it and it has already existed in our world.

TYW: What does great style mean to you today?

Ilona: Great style is personal. It’s nuanced, it’s sensitive and it’s authentic to the individual. It comes from every film you have ever watched, every artwork you have ever laid eyes on, every book you have read, every interaction. It’s the sum of all your experiences that makes up who you are and what is important to you. So much content on the internet is about trying to emulate certain people’s style these days, and while yes you can buy similar items of clothing as someone you admire, those items won’t necessarily look the same on you. Style is so much about your character and how you hold yourself. It’s your personal life journey that makes up your body language and how you wear clothes. It’s your proportions, your lifestyle, the way you take care of yourself, what you consume, it extends into your home and your surroundings. It’s not something that can be copied, style is a fingerprint and we all have a different take.

Most of what I wear is Matteau and vintage. I love vintage and always have because (especially in this day and age) it is something that no one else (or very few) people will have, and I love Matteau because we make the perfect nothing/something pieces that bring just enough but don’t shout too loudly. Like I said, style is nuanced and sensitive, you either get it and have it or you don’t. Style is an edit, it’s not just buying things and having a new outfit everyday. It’s as much what you do but also what you don’t do. Style is wearing things over and over again until they become intimate and part of you and really true to you.

TYW: When you’re considering a new purchase, what makes something worthy of a place in your wardrobe?

Ilona: I’m sort of always looking and hunting for certain things, but it’s rare that I actually buy or add to cart. I have plenty of clothes! I have worked in this industry for so long that I removed myself from the trend merry-go-round a long time ago. My style is pretty simple and somewhat boring and practical. I like easy, comfortable things. I dont fuck with shoes that I can’t wear without blisters or pain, I dont wear tight clothing unless its to workout, and I dont want the recognisable piece that is going to look passe in 4 months time. I know myself and what I like and what I need and more importantly what I don’t need. Life is so much easier when you’re not trying so hard to impress other people. I dress for myself and for my lifestyle and work, not to perform or peacock. I love wearing the same things over and over. A favourite sweater, the perfect vintage t shirt, things that you can mix around but always feel like home. I can buy something and enjoy it without taking a photo of it to prove I have it. I buy for love, obsession or intrigue, not to show off. I’m far more interested in things that have an almost invisible feeling - something you can’t quite put your finger on but that are “just so”. To be honest I buy more for my home than I do for my body!

TYW: When you travel, what are the first things you pack?

Ilona: My cameras! I have really been enjoying taking pictures and improving my eye and skills over the last few years. Next would be my jewelry roll with my watches and family jewellery which help to make an outfit mine and only mine. Vintage levis, white t-shirts and cashmere sweaters are next, and then depending where I’m going I build from there. I am often on month long trips where I go from one city to the beach to another city so I like to keep things simple and pack things that are hard working and easy to pair. I have a wardrobe of wonderful things, but what I really end up wearing are the same things over and over. For evening something like a black cashmere sweater or sweater vest and my favorite pair of 1980’s Saint Laurent gaberdine trousers with 3 pleats in the front and back. A pair of soft old levis, Martiniano ballet flats and our (Matteau) baby tee with a shirt layered or tied around my waist. Easy, classic things that always look good and timeless and make me feel like myself.

TYW: Is there a destination that has shaped your aesthetic more than any other?

Ilona: I’m one of the luckiest people in the world because I basically travel for a living to beautiful locations all year round with wonderful people. I think I’m shaped by growing up by the beach in Australia, but also by my parents who were both born in Europe and lived in the Mediterranean together for almost 10 years before they moved to Sydney. They both have great style and I think I inherited a lot of their energy and intention when it comes to clothing. We recently found photographs taken by our father after his passing of a summer in Spain in 1970 that are so Matteau it’s wild to me. I couldn’t dream of more perfect images that sum up the vibe of the brand and they were taken by my dad and sadly we never got to talk about them while he was alive. I think Matteau is so intrinsic it’s hard to put into words, but the visuals we create definitely help explain what I see and feel.

TYW: Was there a point where you felt Matteau had truly found its audience?

Ilona: We found it right away. The day we launched. Not to sound obnoxious but we have been successful and profitable since day 1. We worked on the business for 2 years before we launched. None of it is an afterthought, it is a very considered, thoughtful operation. We are growing everyday and our expansion into the US, UK and Europe has seen a huge uptick in sales and audience growth and we are so excited for what is to come. Those who really see and understand what we are doing, a lot of them have been there since the beginning. There are so many brands who have tried to replicate what we do, but they don’t have the same authenticity, the same sensitivities, the same life story, it’s just imitating and replicating and at the end of the day it just becomes stuff and noise. It’s not built on the same kind of foundation we have built over the last 11 years. We still stand by the first pieces we made, we still sell out of them. We still stand by the images we made years ago, the same fabrics, the same styles. It’s all been very intentional and consistent and has been honed even sharper every season. There are so many brands who started as one thing, saw what we were doing and then changed their whole direction to mimic ours. It’s so obvious and boring. I wish people could lean on their true identities instead of photocopying other peoples, it seems like a virus that just keeps spreading!

TYW: What makes you feel most confident when you’re on holiday?

Ilona: A swim, laying in the sun with my husband and a good meal. I’m probably most happy in the sun naked to be honest. I know my happiness and confidence doesn’t come from things, it comes from my connection to the ones I love and from nature. Don’t get me wrong, I love beautiful things, but I don’t need much to be happy. Sunshine, the sea and the ones I love close by - that’s all the confidence I need.

TYW: What do you hope women feel when they wear Matteau?

Ilona: Confident, at ease, happy… focused on other things and the present moment and not what they are wearing because they know it looks so good they don’t have to give it a second thought.

Our third Summer Suitcase is here, and this week we’re speaking with Leia Sfez, founder of The Oblist.

Just back from the Amalfi Coast, she’s sharing the places she always returns to, the cafés she never misses, and the books she packed for summer. TYW: Where are you heading this summer?

Leia: I’ve just returned from six days on the Amalfi Coast with my husband. We spent our days riding around on a scooter, stopping for Bellinis, caffè con pane, and swimming whenever we found a quiet cove. We hadn’t been back in eight years, and I’d forgotten just how magical it is.

As for the rest of the summer... I honestly have no idea. I haven’t booked a thing yet. My children are campaigning very hard for Bali in August, and I have to admit, I’m quite easily convinced.

TYW: When you’re planning a trip, what’s most important to you?

Leia: Privacy, above all. If there’s even a small chance I’ll bump into someone from work, it’s probably not the right destination. My ideal holiday is very simple: spending the entire day in a swimsuit, eating exceptionally well, being close to the sea, and forgetting what day of the week it is.

TYW: What’s the first thing you pack?

Leia: My laptop. I’m a bit of a workaholic, so I like checking in every now and then. Just knowing everything’s running smoothly makes it much easier for me to properly switch off.

TYW: What are the five things you never travel without?

Leia: A great novel, Dr. Althea’s 345 Relief Mist Cream, PD3 Dr. Reju-all, SPF 50 from Sisley, a beautiful swimsuit, and an oversized cotton shirt that somehow works from breakfast to dinner.

TYW: What’s your go-to travel outfit?

Leia: A tank top, loose trousers, trainers, and a lightweight knit tied around my waist for overenthusiastic airport air conditioning.

TYW: What book are you reading this summer?

Leia: I’m currently reading Très brève théorie de l’enfer by Jérôme Ferrari. Next on my list are Les belles promesses by Pierre Lemaitre and, in a completely different vein, Je suis Romane Monier by Delphine de Vigan.

TYW: What are you listening to at the moment?

Leia: Lately I’ve been rediscovering old French and Italian classics, they instantly put me in a good mood.

But the album I always come back to is Seventeen Seconds by The Cure. I’ve probably listened to it a hundred times and somehow it never gets old.

TYW: Where are you eating? Your favourite restaurants, cafés or bakeries.

Leia: Pasticceria Pansa in Amalfi is always my first stop. Sitting on the terrace with an espresso while watching the town slowly wake up is one of my favourite rituals. And Da Adolfo in Positano for long lunches by the sea. If a restaurant is only accessible by boat, I’m usually already sold.

TYW: Where are you shopping? The boutiques, markets or local makers you never miss.

Leia: I have to admit I have a weakness for wonderfully kitsch souvenirs. Give me a terrible keychain or an oversized holiday T-shirt and I’m happy.

But the pieces I treasure most always come from small workshops, antique markets and family-run ateliers. This week, I came home with six Murano glasses. I’ve always believed that the best objects carry the memory of the people and places behind them. Years later, you don’t just remember where you bought them, you remember who you were with, what you ate that day, even the smell of the street outside the shop.

TYW: What’s your summer fragrance?

Leia: Fresia by Santa Maria Novella during the day, and Rhubarbe Écarlate by Hermès when the sun goes down.

TYW: What’s one place you’d tell everyone to visit?

Leia: Tokyo and Kyoto. Not necessarily in summer, but the contrast between the two is extraordinary, Tokyo endlessly vibrant, Kyoto deeply serene. They are among the very few places that have completely changed the way I experience a city. In both, beauty and attention to detail are present in even the most ordinary moments.

TYW: What’s your go-to gelato flavour?

Leia: Yoghurt, if it’s done properly. Fig, if I’m lucky enough to find it!

Discover where he’s heading this summer, the Milan café he returns to for his morning pastry and shakerato, what’s on his reading list, and why he’s hoping to explore a new corner of mainland Greece.

TYW:Where are you heading this summer?

David: I’m headed to Favignana in western Sicily, where we’ve rented Zu Nillu through The Thinking Traveller, The house is built into an old limestone quarry overlooking Cala Rossa, one of the most beautiful coves in the Mediterranean. I’m looking for something pretty elemental this summer. It also happens to be where part of The Odyssey was set, both in Homer’s version and Christopher Nolan’s adaptation.

I’m also hoping to spend some time on the Mani Peninsula in southern Greece after reading Monica Mendal’s wonderful story for PRIOR. It’s a journey through Byzantine churches, tiny stone villages and some of the most dramatic coastline in Greece. And it is on the mainland so that would be new for me.

TYW: When you’re planning a trip, what’s most important to you?

David: Wherever I’m going, even if I’m returning somewhere I know well, I want to discover something I haven’t experienced before. I’m not really someone who slips into a routine when I travel. I like arriving with a few ideas about a place and then seeing how they match—or don’t match—the reality. That’s become one of my favourite parts of travelling.

TYW: What’s the first thing you pack?

David: Swimming googles. I’ve discovered that the only thing that really fixes me after a long-haul flight is swimming laps, so they’re always the first thing into my bag. Alongside them are my black CDLP swim suit. They don’t look like a speedo and somewhere between that and a trunk so it is a good middle ground for beach and pool.

TYW: What are five things you never travel without?

David: Australian Kakadu Plum zinc sunscreen, a couple of blank notebooks from Pettinaroli in Milan a stack of Sunspel basics and my Marfa Stance men’s aviator jacket, a Brioni white shirt, and, admittedly, some fairly hectic sleeping tablets.

TYW: What’s your go-to travel outfit?

Comfort usually wins. I wear a Sea Island cotton shirt from Sunspel, linen trousers from a brand called Venroy, my Apple AirPods Max, sunglasses and, almost regardless of the season, a cashmere shawl/scarf for the cabin. I find good ones when I am traveling to India and Nepal.

TYW: What’s on your reading list?

David: I’ve just finished I Eat the Stars by Sarah Wilson and have David Sedaris’s new book waiting for me I’m also deep into research for my own book, which comes out next autumn. I’m looking at maps, infographics, visual storytelling and old atlases. There is a great one by Taschen called History of Information Graphics.

I keep up with a bunch of Substacks in the travel world namely, Maria Shollenbarger’s, At Large Monica Mendal’s So There’s This Place, The Stanza, and a few others.

TYW: What are you listening to?

David: I’m still slightly obsessed with Rosalía after seeing her perform in Berlin—it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.Podcast-wise, which I love, I’m always listening to political shows. I never miss The Rest Is Politics (the UK version),and I’ve been listening to this new series called We Call Her Emma about Asma al-Assad. I love William Dalrymple’s Empire.I should also mention my own podcast, Traveling Through I don’t generally listen to myself, of course, but I’m especially excited about an upcoming conversation with Deborah Needleman about her journeys through craft traditions around the world.

TYW: Where are you eating?

David: In New York I like to nab a corner table at King for lunches, and outside in the back patio at Borgo, I don’t usually eat a lot of Italian when I am in New York but I can’t resist Borgo.

Most mornings begin with a shakerato and a pastry at Cucchi in Milan. Lunchtime in the city is often at Rovello 18 and I am holding onto the stuffed zucchini flowers before they are finally out of season.

In July and August when I am home in Milan, I eat on my garden terrace surrounded by eight varieties of tomatoes that I grew from seed. I can’t remember which I planted and they are just coming through so that’s fun. Last year we had more than we could eat, I could have fed a Greek village.

Every summer I also try to make it to northern Spain because I don’t think there’s anywhere better to eat seafood which I love the most in summer. My boyfriend, Wiet, and I love going to La Mulata in Santander, If there’s turbot on the menu, that’s almost always what I order. Roasted with potatoes and tomato.

TYW: Where are you shopping?

David: Connolly is maybe my favourite store anywhere. The clothes are elegant and well priced. I love the treasures they find for the home and sell in their gallery space. They might come from Vienna, Japan or Italy and are always beautiful and a bit whimsical and one off. At the moment I have my eye on their Antler Ice Bucket and matching Antler Ice Tong

In Italy, I lose hours browsing Cambi Casa d’Aste. One of the joys of the site is that you can see where the auctions are around the country and the ones in Palermo and Genoa are full of Baroque furniture, paintings and antiques, while Milan you can find amazing things from Italian design from the 1960s and 1970s. Many of the objects in my apartment have come from there.

TYW: What scent says summer to you?

David I love all the different scents of figs, from the green, slightly nutty smell of the leaves to the richer, more caramelised scent of the fruit itself. It may sound a little clichéd, but Philosykos Eau de Parfum by Diptyque, somehow manages to hold both at once: the sharp brightness of the fig leaf and the softer, jammy sweetness of ripe figs. It feels like sitting beneath a fig tree on a hot afternoon.

TYW: What’s one place you’d tell everyone to visit?

David: India. Perhaps not in summer, although maybe for an Indian summer.

TYW: What’s your go-to gelato flavour?

David: I always order two scoops and two different flavours. One of them is almost always fior di latte—literally “flowers of milk”—partly because I love saying the words aloud. The second flavour changes depending on my mood: melon or peach one day, hazelnut, chocolate or hazelnut and chocolate (gianduja) another. Gelato always reminds me of my friend Skye, your mum, the QUEEN of gelato.

Anyway, I was away at the beginning of the week on a little family holiday with my sister and my son, a trip I now want to do year after year.

My point being that packing, especially for summer, always makes me go through my wardrobe and beauty shelf, editing, curating and, in a way, shopping my own wardrobe. So often I have no idea what I actually own and end up wearing whatever’s been thrown over the back of a chair and calling it a day.

Starting with skincare...

My new discovery (and new obsession) is this Allies of Skin Probiotic Treatment Mist. It’s refreshing, it’s balancing, and you can spray it throughout the day.

Sisley SPF 50, I love this: the smell, the texture, the whole thing. It is very expensive, so here are some other options I love: 1, 2 and 3 (this i’m actually obsessed with).

Medik8 eye cream with SPF for the day. Copper peptide serum in the day (post mist spritz, pre SPF).

And this new tool from Dr Sebagh I’ve discovered, which is honestly incredible for de-puffing, especially the swollen face I’ve been waking up with in this heatwave.

The bag I’m using: this slouchy Chan Luu one. Sadly, I think it’s from last summer. These ones from this season, although a different shape, are ideal for the beach, the airport, day to day run around and everything in between.

Sarah Hiscox has just released her first book, The Beginning and the End of Everything. It’s an honest, heartbreaking and powerful story about addiction. I’m only halfway through, but I couldn’t recommend it more.

That includes getting dressed, talking, replying to an email, parenting a tiny person, remembering where I left my phone, and generally functioning as an adult human.

And for those who read my Substack a few weeks ago, I’m still opting for trousers over dresses, even as the temperature rises. Unless it’s this dress by Posse, which I wore to the Serpentine Summer Party on Tuesday or this dress from Musier.

These trousers, however, are on their way to me.

And these trousers are ready and waiting for the temperature to drop by a few degrees.

And these are the sandals I’m wearing with it all. Gym included.

Speaking of the gym, these cycling shorts are the best I’ve ever owned.

And while we’re on the subject of polka dots, I also love this Matteau bikini and dress. It’s a slightly subtler take on the print (there’s room for both).

And this is the sunscreen I’m bringing with me. It’s mineral-based, has a slight tint, and isn’t sticky!! Exactly

Earlier this week I hosted a breakfast at home with Daphine, the jewellery brand newly taken over by the chic duo María de la Orden and Laure de la Révélière.

Daphine is a brand I’ve loved through all of its chapters. It’s one of those rare jewellery brands that makes accessorising feel easy and completely unintimidating. The pieces work just as well worn alone as they do layered up, depending on your mood, outfit, or how much jewellery you’re in the mood to wear that day.

So when the opportunity came up to host a breakfast together for some friends, I was so excited. I knew a few of them already loved the brand, but there were also some who hadn’t come across Daphine before, and I had a feeling they’d be just as obsessed as I am. And I was right.

We set up a charm bar in the middle of my living room and it quickly became the centre of attention. Honestly, I don’t think anyone left its side for the entire breakfast. Everyone was busy trying on different combinations, swapping chains, comparing charms and helping each other make decisions.

There were rope chains, classic gold chains, chunkier styles, and then the really fun part: the charms. Watching everyone put together something completely personal was such a reminder of why Daphine does jewellery so well. It feels playful rather than precious, and personal rather than overly styled.

By the end of the morning there were necklaces everywhere, half-finished coffees on every surface, and a room full of people completely won over by Daphine. Exactly the kind of breakfast I love hosting.

Open toe shoe season is officially upon us, which means pedicures are basically a business expense now. Well, that’s what I’ve told my accountant anyway.

So here you are, a list of summer shoes worth knowing about, from flip flops to mules to a few closed toe options for those who like a little more coverage. I’m also sharing my latest obsession, House of Dagmar. The Stockholm based brand might be up there with Toteme for me, a brand that does clean, good quality, well fitting everyday wardrobe staples and just so happens to do a great summer shoe too (see bellow).

I love these slip ons. They also come in black and work with pretty much everything: jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses, a bikini and not much else. These shoes know no bounds.

For everyday, I love these suede slip ons from Jenni Kayne. I'd wear them with vintage Levi’s and a white T shirt and call it a day.

I love these from Christopher Esber. The jute detail feels a little different and makes a nice change from your usual summer sandals.

I feel like these Esber jelly flip flops have become a bit of a phenomenon, and for good reason.

Not much to say about these, they're just a really great staple and the kind of shoe you'll never regret having in your wardrobe. These ones from Massimo Dutti do a similar thing.

Courtney Grow has just launched a capsule collection with Reformation and there are some really good pieces in it. I may of got a few things myself, but we’re focusing on the shoes here (even if I can’t stop thinking about these trousers). They have a very Khaite feel about them and the satin works just as well with denim as well as with something a little more dressy. I’m here for all the colours (I got the blue) but the black are great if you need something that goes with everything.

These are also fun..

The Row does make a good sandal. Expensive, but I do get a few good summers out of them. And this tan is so good, the white contrast keeps it feeling really fresh.

I recently got these in white, which I love, but I think this burgundy pair is really chic…I can’t justify two pairs, so one of you will have to do it.

Sometimes we need a little elevation, and why not get it with a bit of croc? Speaking of Croc these are great.

Ending here on something that’s technically not a sandal but definitely a summer shoe. These crochet beaded ballet flats could be madness... but I think I’m really into them? You tell me.

It got me thinking: I don’t enjoy wearing skirts or dresses like I do trousers, and I hate feeling forced to wear something I ultimately don’t feel good in.

So, if you’re like me and don’t naturally gravitate towards shorts, mini skirts or floaty dresses, here’s a list of trousers that are summer-proof. I can’t guarantee sweat-proof, but definitely better than jeans.

I don’t mean to hammer on about these trousers, but I’m going to because they’re as comfortable and lightweight as being naked…

That being said, they are slightly see-through a small price to pay for the naked feel,so I wear this underwear with them and it works perfectly underneath.

These linen trousers from Zara Home are also great, airy and easy, maybe even buy two pairs? Also would be very nice with these Esber sandals.

The Everyday Pant by Enza Costa, they always do them, and they come in lots of different fabrics: lightweight, heavyweight, and everything in between. I love this very pale yellow.

So, there are some of my favourite options for when dresses or skirts don’t work and I’ll keep adding more as I find them, so keep an eye on The Yellow World.

Dressing for the city in summer, however, doesn’t always come naturally, especially when we’re saying goodbye to our safety net of oversized jumpers and coats that can so often be the outfit. So, here’s some of what I’m gravitating towards lately to make getting dressed feel a little more seamless.

Getting back into the habit of wearing skirts is always a tough one for me. Evening dressing comes naturally, but sometimes I forget how to wear skirts during the day. The above look from Auralee reminded me that skirts can work with flats (length dependent, of course).

I love the way this skirt (I love this blue option too plus alternatives here and here) has been paired with a simple Raglan t- shirt (options here, here and here) and flip-flops, it feels easy, wearable, relaxed, and still interesting.

And on the subject of skirts, how good is this one from With Jean?! I’d wear it with a plain black or white T-shirt, and either these or these depending on the time of day.

Moving on to trousers, I like a looser fit, and I do tend to lean towards something a little more low-waisted. I stay loyal to denim (Love these and these also these), of course, but this is also the time of year when I wear more cotton, linen, and silk trousers.

These jersey trousers from House of Dagmar are on their way to me as we speak, and they’re exactly the kind of trousers I want to wear everywhere: around the house, out to dinner, for school drop-off, to meetings. They’re the kind of trousers that look after you from morning to night, the kind you’re not desperate to take off the second you walk through the door.

Shirts, I love a good shirt, and I’m really, really into a red shirt at the moment.

This one from Groes, A silk one from La Veste, not no to red polka dots… I might even tie it in a knot at the front. Another great option here.

In our conversation, Fara reflects on the beauty philosophies that shaped both her career and her brand, from understanding complexion during her early years working in beauty at seventeen to creating products designed to enhance, rather than conceal. She also shares why there’s no “correct” way to apply makeup, the importance of breathable skin and how building a beauty routine can feel as intentional as curating a wardrobe.

TYW: What inspired you to create your brand, and what was the original vision behind it?

Fara: When I first started building my own brand, I wanted to bridge many gaps. I wanted a luxury beauty line that sat in the fashion space, made sustainability sexy and was both complexion-considerate and design-driven. I’ve used my experience of working on models of all ethnicities and drawn on my understanding of undertones to create the best shade range possible.

TYW: What did your career in beauty look like before launching your own line?

Fara: My first real job in beauty came at 17, at Prescriptives in a mall near my home. It was an incredibly modern brand for the time, in the ’90s, very focused on complexion, undertones, and customization. That’s where I learned to work on all skin types: dry skin, mature skin, skin with visible pores… It was a true training ground for me.

In college, I studied marketing while continuing to work in beauty retail. I never took any makeup classes, but working in retail at a young age was, in my opinion, the best possible education. You learn to understand textures, colors, and, most importantly, how to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.

In the early 2000’s, I moved to New York to focus on editorial work and assisted top makeup artists for a little while before going on my own. I spent many years building up my relationships with photographers, models and stylists and honing my own style of beauty. Over time, I began working on some of the most coveted publications, campaigns and became a go-to makeup artist for many models etc. Today I continue to work on luxury fashion campaigns, magazine covers and lead makeup on runways.

TYW: Was makeup always something you were drawn to, or did that interest develop over time?

Fara: I’ve always wanted to be ‘a woman’ since I was a child. Watching my mother apply make-up and dressing up always excited me, and I knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort and a creative. I was deeply obsessed with make-up, color and texture from early on, and when I was working at my mother’s salon in my early teens, I used to look at the magazines that came to us and really study the fashions, makeup, hair and lighting. It was a world I knew I wanted to be a part of!

TYW: Do you ever let anyone else do your makeup, or do you prefer to handle it yourself?

Fara: I feel I have such specific features and I like to look a certain way when it comes to breathable skin and how I do my eyes and lips… so to date, I haven’t really allowed anyone to do my makeup. But I think I can be open to it — never say never!

TYW: What’s your number one beauty tip?

Fara: One beauty rule I tend to ignore is adhering to one ‘correct’ way of doing something. For instance, I’m often asked, ‘What comes first, lipstick or lip liner?’ But I ask, what are you trying to achieve? If you’re after staying power, lining your lips first helps everything else stay put. But if you want a faded, lived-in effect, I recommend adding lip color first and softly lining after. Sometimes there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and it’s better to tweak your technique based on the look you’re going for.

That said, my number one tip would be: Think about your skin not as a canvas that needs to be completely flattened and erased, but think about how you can enhance your unique skin qualities. For example, if you have a beautiful natural flush on your cheeks or cute freckles, work with it rather than covering it up! Your dimension is actually your superpower!

TYW: What does beauty mean to you?

Fara: The power of beauty is so strong. Who do you want to be? I know this for myself — when I’m having a night out, a little bit of smokey eye makeup and a glossy nude lip is going to give a sexy, confident energy. You’re hyping yourself up with your makeup look. I think that’s so powerful.

My style is, and always has been, a hand-applied look that feels smudgy and blurry and moveable and lived-in. It’s perfectly imperfect, and that’s the world I love to live in!

TYW: How do you approach building a beauty routine — and does it feel similar to building a wardrobe or curating your beauty bag?

Fara: I think having a beauty routine that feels luxurious is a worthwhile investment. Your face card is the thing you present to the world, so having a well-hydrated complexion and makeup that is breathable and shades that suit you is so important. My whole philosophy with Fara Homidi Beauty is that I am offering the best products and shades so that you can invest in quality essentials that you know will serve you day in and day out, like a curated wardrobe!

TYW: If you had to choose just one product from your line, which would it be and why?

Fara: Although this question is a difficult one to answer, it would have to be The Essential Face Compact. For me, complexion is the foundation to any makeup look — if your skin looks good, everything you layer on top will sit well, and that is 90% of the battle. It took me four years, several labs, and a lot of persistence to create a formula that’s hydrating while being matte, has a bouncy glide and a blurring effect, all while using limited clean ingredients sans silicones.

TYW: What advice would you give to someone thinking about launching their own beauty brand today?

Fara: Make sure your business side is locked down. Creative is important and difficult, but if you don’t have a strong business side, the creative will not matter. Taxes, regulatory, overseas selling, projections, retailer timelines, and building a team to support you are the most important things.

And creatively: I think it’s important to trust your own instincts and not look at what other brands are doing. Staying authentic and unique is what will set your brand apart.

I travelled to Paris to visit my friends from TL180 for their launch dinner celebrating their collaboration with Soeur. TL is known for their fine knits, all handmade in Rome, and this collection highlights exactly what they do best: vibrant knitwear. The Momo in blue and brown with the yellow contrast is my favourite piece. I’d wear it over a bikini, with jeans or trousers, or just with bare legs.

I asked my sister if it would be boring to write a dedicated Substack about hats and she replied yes… but then admitted she needed a hat and was completely lost on where to begin. I’m not really a fan of caps, controversial I know, and I think you need confidence to wear hats, confidence I definitely don’t always have. But they are also a crucial accessory for protecting your skin, so here is a list of hats I’m currently considering:

What I read / reading
Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking. I would recommend it to anyone who is grieving, or knows someone who is. It captures perfectly the feeling of losing someone, at least for me anyway.

Also jumping on the bandwagon and listening to Fame Sick by Lena Dunham on Audible. I’m not much of a reader these days, or any days lol, so audiobooks feel easier somehow. It’s funny, honest, slightly unbearable at times, and God… I just really like her.

TYW: What inspired you to launch Suzie Kondi, and what was the original vision for the brand?

Suzie: Honestly, it came from a kind of frustration — I couldn’t find clothes that worked for the way I actually live. I travel constantly, I move between places and moods and I wanted pieces that moved with me. The original vision was simple: style that makes you feel at home anywhere in the world. Comfort not as a compromise, but as its own kind of confidence.

TYW: What was the very first piece you designed, and do you remember the moment you realised it had potential?

Suzie: It was a simple velour set — a top and trouser. I put it on and didn’t want to take it off. That was the moment, really. When you stop thinking about what you’re wearing because it just feels right. What I kept coming back to was this idea that comfort could redefine confidence, not undermine it.

TYW: Before starting your own label, what did your career in fashion look like?

Suzie: I have always loved making things. I grew up in Australia, and during a 13-month sailing trip to the US, I started crocheting bikinis and making handbags on the boat. When I arrived, I turned that into an accessories brand called Toast, which I ran for a few years. Suzie Kondi feels like a natural continuation of that path—it all comes from the same place creatively.

TYW: Your pieces have a relaxed, nostalgic feel. Where do you usually find inspiration when designing new collections?

Suzie: It always starts with colour, and colour for me always starts with a place. A particular shade of blue I saw in Greece, the neutral streets of Paris, the warmth of an afternoon in Patmos. I carry those feelings with me and try to translate them into the dye lab. The clothes follow from there. I want my pieces to actually transport you - back to a place, or feeling or version of yourself on holiday.

TYW: Are there any designers, eras, or references that consistently inspire you?

Suzie: The 1970s, endlessly — but it’s a mood more than a literal reference. That effortless glamour, the sense that women were dressing for themselves and their own pleasure even to travel. Unhurried. I’m also very inspired by craft traditions — the way colour is made, the skill behind natural dyeing.

TYW: Who is the Suzie Kondi woman to you, and how do you picture her wearing your pieces in everyday life?

Suzie: She’s someone who moves through the world on her own terms. She’s not dressing for an occasion or a dress code, she just has a very clear sense of what feels right on her body and in her life. She’s not trying too hard, and she looks completely herself. Come as you are - the clothes take you the rest of the way.

TYW: When you’re packing for a weekend trip, which Suzie Kondi pieces do you always reach for?

Suzie: Always a monochrome set— it’s the foundation of everything, you can build any look from it. Then something in a saturated colour, because travel deserves colour. I pack light but I pack with intention. The pieces are designed to work together, so you never feel like you’ve brought the wrong thing.

TYW: How do you balance the creative side of designing with the practical side of running a brand?

Suzie: With difficulty and a lot of humour. The creative part — being in the dye lab, working with colour and fabric — that’s where I feel completely at ease. The business side is something I’ve had to learn to embrace rather than resist. What helps is keeping the two connected: every commercial decision I make, I ask whether it serves the integrity of what we’re making.

TYW: What advice would you give to someone hoping to start their own fashion brand today?

Suzie: Start with something true — a genuine point of view and a need. The brands that last are built on a real perspective, and people can feel the difference. And don’t underestimate the power of craft and story. In so much noise, it’s the why behind what you make that gives people a reason to care.

TYW: What are your go-to beauty rituals, especially during busy periods?

Suzie: I try to keep things pretty simple and consistent, especially when life gets busy. I live a really healthy lifestyle—I don’t drink, I try to get to bed at a good time, and I walk a lot, usually between 10–20k steps a day. I cook most of my meals and get a lot of my food from the farmers market, which makes a big difference. I also love Pilates—I go to Flatiron Pilates with Amy Nelms—and I practice Vedic meditation in the morning and at night, which really keeps me grounded. And when I’m in Paris, I always make time to see Elaine Huntzinger—she’s incredible for acupuncture and Ayurvedic facial rejuvenation.
