In August 1929, a Jewish family in Hebron ran to their Arab neighbour’s door. He opened it. He hid them until dawn. His name is barely recorded.

That is the part of the story we tend to miss.

We are often told this conflict is, at its core, a simple religious struggle between Muslims and Jews. It is a neat idea. It is also misleading.

Across the late Ottoman period, the British Mandate, and into the State of Israel, the record shows something less tidy. People did not behave as blocs. Some chose violence. Others chose restraint, cooperation, or protection.

If this were purely a Muslim (or Arab) versus Jewish conflict, those people should not exist. Yet they appear again and again.

This is not just history. The same pattern is still there, if you look for it.

1929: Hebron and the Limits of the Narrative

The 1929 Hebron massacre is rightly remembered. Sixty-seven Jews were killed. An ancient community was effectively destroyed. Synagogues were desecrated, homes looted, lives ended.

That part is clear. It should be.

Less often mentioned is what happened alongside it.

As mobs moved through the streets, some Arab families made a different choice. They opened their doors. The Abu Shaker family took in Jewish neighbours, hiding them while searches went on outside.

That meant direct risk. Doors were knocked. Questions asked. Decisions had to be made in the moment.

One account describes an elderly member of the family standing at his doorway and facing down the mob, making it clear they would have to pass through him to reach those inside.

Others guided people out or intervened where they could. Without those actions, more would have died.

In the same place, at the same time, people chose very different paths.

These were not the majority. That is precisely why they matter.

Warnings, Restraint and Local Relationships

Hebron was not unique.

During the 1921 Jaffa riots, there are accounts of Arab residents sheltering Jewish neighbours or helping them leave before things escalated. In Tiberias in 1938, warnings passed quietly. Some listened and survived.

These details rarely make it into the wider story. They do not fit the narrative of inevitable hostility.

But they point to something basic. People acted on relationships as much as identity. The person giving a warning was not thinking in slogans. He was thinking about someone he knew.

That tension between identity and choice runs through everything that followed.

1948: War, Division and Unexpected Alliances

The 1948 war is often described as a unified Arab effort against the new State of Israel. In broad terms, that is true. There was fighting. There was intervention.

But it was not uniform.

Some Druze communities sided with Jewish forces. The reasons varied: local politics, leadership decisions, distrust of Arab nationalist leadership. But there was also something simpler. They fought alongside people they knew.

Bedouin fighters also joined, particularly in the north where relationships in the Galilee already existed. They worked as scouts and trackers, bringing knowledge of terrain and movement.

These were not symbolic gestures. They involved risk and, in some cases, death. Again, this should not have happened. And yet it did.

Shared State, Diverging Paths

After 1948, the complexity did not disappear.

Arab citizens of Israel became part of the state, but not overnight and not smoothly. Many lived under military administration in the early years. Citizenship existed on paper, but trust and integration took time.

Even so, cooperation developed. Druze service became formalised in the 1950s. Bedouin trackers played (and still play) important roles. Others served in police and security roles.

Politics, geography, leadership and circumstance all played a part. Religion sometimes mattered a great deal, especially when used by leaders. But even then, people still made their own decisions.

And those decisions had consequences.

None of this denies the role religion has sometimes played, particularly when mobilised by leaders. But even then, it was never the whole story.

Beyond the Region: A Wider Pattern

This pattern is not confined to this conflict.

During the Holocaust, some Muslims and Arabs risked their lives to save Jews. These cases are documented, though not widely known.

One example is Mohamed Helmy, an Egyptian doctor in Berlin. He hid a young Jewish woman, Anna Boros, and protected her using false medical claims and documents. He was later recognised as Righteous Among the Nations.

His actions had nothing to do with Middle Eastern politics. They were personal decisions made under pressure.

Similar things happened elsewhere. In Albania, Muslim families sheltered Jews under a code of honour. In North Africa, there were cases of neighbours protecting neighbours.

These are not the norm. They are exceptions. But they show that even in extreme circumstances, people could choose differently.

The same pattern appears again in more recent events.

The Present: Echoes of the Past

During the attacks of 7 October 2023, Arab citizens of Israel and Bedouin civilians helped rescue and evacuate people, sometimes at great personal risk.

Bedouin residents near Gaza were among the first to drive in. One driver, his truck riddled with bullet holes, later described racing toward the Nova music festival while others fled. He didn’t ask who was Jewish and who wasn’t. He saw people bleeding. He drove.

Arab paramedics treated the wounded under fire. Arab police officers and soldiers were among those killed defending communities. Their names appear on memorial lists alongside Jewish ones.

At the same time, Hamas killed Muslims as well as Jews, including Bedouin civilians and foreign workers.

The dividing line was not religion. It was action.

Voices Today: Refusing the Script

This is not only about moments of crisis. It can also be seen in people speaking out now.

There are Arab voices who openly reject the idea that this is a simple religious conflict. Some defend Jewish communities. Some support Israel. They do so knowing it may cost them.

Loay Alshareef (@lalshareef), an Emirati commentator, speaks regularly about Jewish–Arab understanding, challenging his own audience to rethink assumptions. Tamer Masudin (@tmasudin), an Israeli Bedouin content creator, pushes back against antisemitism online, defending Jewish communities against a tide of abuse. Their voices are not always welcome. That doesn’t stop them.

They are not following a script. Like countless others, they are making a choice.

Conclusion: The Myth and the Reality

The idea of an eternal Muslim–Jewish conflict is appealing because it is simple. It turns a complicated history into something easy to grasp.

But it does not hold up.

Across more than a century, there have always been people who did not follow that pattern. They warned, protected, cooperated, and sometimes fought alongside those they were expected to oppose. They are often overlooked because they complicate the story.

That is precisely why they matter.

This has never been a simple war of Muslims versus Jews. It has been shaped by politics, leadership, local relationships and individual decisions. Religion has played a role, sometimes a significant one, but it has never been the whole explanation.

So when someone says this is a war of Muslims against Jews, there is a simple question to ask:

What do you do with the people who saved their neighbours?

You can ignore them. You can dismiss them as exceptions.

Or you can accept what they show: that identity is not fate, and history is not fixed.

They are not a footnote. They are the story.

Commonly attributed to Menachem Begin and cited from a 1982 exchange with U.S. Senator Joe Biden. The exact phrasing varies in different accounts, but the sentiment is consistently reported.

Defiant. Uncompromising. A rejection of something that had defined Jewish life for centuries.

A Rejection of Dependency

The premise is stated plainly: nobody came to our aid.

That is the foundation Begin was working from, and everything else followed from it.

Born in Brest-Litovsk in 1913, Begin was raised in a Zionist household and became active in the Betar youth movement. He studied law in Warsaw before the Second World War upended everything. In 1940 he was arrested by the Soviet NKVD and sent to a labour camp. Released the following year, he joined the Polish Anders Army, which eventually made its way to the Middle East.

By 1942, he had arrived in Mandatory Palestine. Within a year, he had joined the Irgun, and by 1944 he was its leader.

Irgun and Legitimacy

The Irgun was controversial. A paramilitary group rejected by the Jewish Agency (Zionist administration) that carried out attacks against British targets. To some, this was resistance. To others, it was terrorism.

Their actions were brutal and remain deeply contested; not a record that sits comfortably, nor one that can be reduced to a single moral category. And yet, at the end of the British Mandate, the various Jewish underground groups were brought together under a single national command. This was not a moral endorsement, but a strategic decision in the heat of the 1948 war.

Initially, the Irgun was forced to cease operating as an underground force, its continued existence deemed unacceptable by the emerging state. Its fighters were absorbed into what became the Israel Defense Forces.

This reflected a broader pattern in which movements seen as radical or unacceptable were, under the pressures of statehood, incorporated into a unified national structure.

In the Zionist case, this took a specific form: disparate militias were subordinated to a single state authority as independence approached, with integration driven by necessity, and not by granting support or acknowledging prior legitimacy.

Unity at Gunpoint

The tension was not theoretical. In June 1948, during the Altalena Affair, the new Israeli leadership ordered the shelling of an Irgun weapons ship to enforce the principle of a single army. Begin ordered his followers not to return fire, a decision that helped avert a Jewish civil war. The episode made clear that integration would come on the state’s terms, not through recognition of Irgun.

For Begin, it had never simply been a fight against the British. He rejected an entire historical posture.

The Diaspora Model

For centuries, Jews survived without sovereignty, without an army, often without rights. That survival came through adaptation and dependence; knowing when to keep your head down, when to negotiate, when to move on.

Empires rose and fell. Laws changed overnight. Violence could erupt without warning. In that world, survival depended less on resistance and more on endurance, negotiation, and, at times, submission.

Begin viewed diaspora life as fundamentally precarious – dependent, conditional, ultimately untenable. For centuries, that model had worked. Then the Holocaust took much of his family. His understanding of Jewish vulnerability was never theoretical again.

Begin’s response represented a shift in thinking.

If survival depends on the goodwill of others, then it can be taken away. If it depends on your own power, then at least it cannot be removed without a fight. For Begin, this was the Zionist conclusion; the establishment of a homeland for the Jews where they could determine their own future.

Power and its Costs

But it also raised a further question.

If you reject powerlessness entirely, what replaces it?

Because the moment you move from endurance to force, you step into a different moral landscape. One where survival is no longer passive, but active. Where choices are no longer about how to endure, but how far you are willing to go to prevent that endurance from ever being necessary again.

This was not a marginal view. Begin would go on to become Prime Minister of Israel.

Whether he was right is still debated.

But the world he was reacting to is not.

The question is not simply whether Begin’s methods were justified.

It is whether history had already rendered the alternative obsolete.

Whenever antisemitism is discussed, especially in the context of modern conflict, the same claim inevitably appears:

“Anti‑Zionism is not antisemitism.”

On the surface it sounds reasonable, fair and credible – and many who repeat it genuinely believe they are opposing a political ideology, not Jews themselves.

They see their position as anti‑nationalist, anti‑colonial, or simply critical of Israel – and historically, that argument once had merit.

There were once Jews who opposed Zionism and entire Jewish movements rejected Jewish nationalism. There were fierce debates within Jewish communities about whether a Jewish homeland was necessary, desirable, or even wise.

So yes, anti-Zionism once existed within Jewish discourse, but modern anti-Zionism increasingly targets not an idea, but an existing Jewish society; the world’s only Jewish country.

Criticism of Israeli policy or government is normal – just like criticism of any nation’s government. Anti‑Zionism, however, questions the legitimacy of Jewish self‑determination itself.

The difficult thing to understand, however, is that modern anti‑Zionism is not always expressed as hatred of Jews – many who adopt anti‑Zionist positions really do see themselves as progressive, anti‑racist, or aligned with universal human‑rights principles.

But scratch beneath the surface, and the blind spots start to get clearer.

Zionism – what it is, what it is not

Zionism was never a single ideology; right from the start it was a broad church of competing visions:

• Socialist Zionists imagined collective societies built around labour and cooperation.

• Religious Zionists saw a spiritual return to the land.

• Liberal Zionists imagined democratic institutions and integration with the international order.

• Revisionists argued for a more assertive national project.

• Cultural Zionists focused on language and identity.

The early Zionists disagreed about almost everything; they debated borders, governance, religion, relations with Arabs, economics, language and identity.

The arguments were often intense and deeply ideological, but beneath all those disagreements sat a shared assumption:

Jews, like other peoples, had a right to self‑determination.

That core meaning of Political Zionism was defined and formalised in 1897 at the First Zionist Congress through the Basel Program:

“Zionism seeks to establish a home for the Jewish people in Palestine secured under public law.”

It is striking how modest this formulation was. It spoke of a home, not an empire. Safety, not domination. Recognition, not supremacy.

It’s worth nothing that Palestine, during this time, was not an independent state, but a small, sparsely populated geographical region within the vast Ottoman Empire.

Additionally, Zionism did not emerge as an isolated movement. After centuries of empires, the late nineteenth century saw the rise of the nation state. Greeks sought independence, Italians unified, Poles pursued sovereignty, and Arab nationalism began to develop.

Zionism was not unusual – it was the language of its time.

Jewish Objections and The Bundist Alternative

Jewish opposition to Zionism came from multiple directions. Some religious Jewish groups opposed political Zionism, believing that a return to Jewish sovereignty should occur only through divine intervention rather than political action.

Others feared Zionism would provoke further antisemitism, or believed assimilation would succeed and Jews could integrate fully into the societies in which they already lived.

Historically, anti-Zionism existed within Jewish mainstream discourse as part of internal debates about identity, theology, and survival – not hostility toward Jewish self-determination.

The most significant alternative to Zionism emerged in Eastern Europe: The Jewish Labour Bund.

The Bund rejected Jewish nationalism altogether.

Bundists argued that Jews should remain in the countries where they lived and fight for equality there. They believed socialism would eliminate antisemitism, and that Jewish culture could flourish in diaspora communities without the need for a Jewish homeland.

Bundism was not antisemitic – it was an ideological alternative.

The opposition to Zionism that once existed within Jewish political life was not a rejection of Jews, but a disagreement about strategy and survival.

Bundism rested on several assumptions: that minorities could live safely, that nationalism would weaken, and that socialism would eventually prevail.

However, history moved in the opposite direction; nationalism hardened, pogroms intensified and Jews were increasingly excluded from national identities across Europe.

Then came the Holocaust.

European Jewry – the heartland of Bundism – was devastated. Entire communities disappeared, and the belief that Jews could safely remain minorities was catastrophically wiped out.

Bundism did not simply lose the argument; history destroyed it.

The lesson many Jews drew was stark: without sovereignty, Jewish security depended on others, and history had repeatedly shown how fragile that dependence could be.

Before Israel – No Safety Net

Before Israel, Jews had no fallback. No state, no army and no refuge.

When Jews were expelled or persecuted, they fled into the unknown. When borders closed, they were trapped. When violence came, they depended on the goodwill of others, and this happened time and time again, for over a thousand years.

The birth – or rebirth – of Israel changed that.

For the first time in nearly two thousand years, Jews had sovereignty. They had somewhere to go; a place that would unconditionally accept Jews, Jewish refugees and a society built around Jewish continuity.

Israel did not only change life for Jews, it changed Jewish history everywhere. For the first time in centuries, Jews were no longer entirely dependent on the goodwill of others.

Even Jews who opposed Zionism could live in a world where that safety net existed.

Modern Echoes

Some Jews today still hold views that echo Bundist thinking. They may not word it as such, but they reject nationalism, emphasise diaspora identity – or no identity – and advocate universalist ideals over national ones.

While there is always room for these views, and Jewish debate remains diverse and disagreement over Zionism continues – there is a crucial difference.

Bundists opposed creating a Jewish homeland; they objected to an idea.

Modern anti‑Zionism calls for dismantling a state that already exists.

That is not the same argument.

Opposing the creation of a state is theoretical. Calling for the removal of an existing one involves real people and real consequences.

Seven Million Jews

Today, around seven million Jews live in Israel – that is almost half the world’s Jews. These are not settlers or temporary residents, but families, generations, and a society that has grown over decades.

Most were born there. A slim majority descend from Jewish communities forced from the Middle East and North Africa. Others are descendants of Holocaust survivors.

Most have no alternative homeland, meaning anti-Zionism is no longer an abstract political idea.

Calling for the dismantling of Israel is not simply a political position; it raises some basic questions.

What happens to seven million Jews?

Where do they go and who guarantees their safety?

These questions are rarely addressed, yet they sit at the centre of the debate.

Some anti–Zionists propose an alternative state that unites the territory into a larger region under a new “Palestine” banner; however, this would, in practice, mean the end of Jewish self‑determination, turning Jews once again into a minority dependent on the goodwill of others.

Given Jewish history, this is also not a neutral proposal.

Modern Jewish anti-Zionism

Some argue that because a minority of Jews oppose Zionism, anti-Zionism cannot be considered antisemitic.

At first, this idea might seem convincing. After all, Jewish opinion has never been uniform; Jews have always disagreed on politics, religion, identity, and nationalism, much like any other group.

Dissent within a community does not negate hostility toward it. Throughout history, every group has had minorities who reject aspects of their identity or heritage, yet this does not diminish the shared experience of the whole.

Within certain circles, anti‑Zionist Jews are frequently amplified far beyond their actual numbers, with a small minority presented as representative or authoritative – meanwhile the voices of the vast majority are ignored.

Tokenism and Selective Amplification

This creates a strange inversion. While most Jews worldwide support Israel’s existence in some form, in anti‑Zionist discourse, the minority view is often treated as the authentic Jewish voice, while the majority is framed as misguided, manipulated, or morally compromised.

This is not genuine engagement with Jewish diversity; it is selective amplification.

And when a minority of Jews is used to legitimise hostility toward the majority, it begins to resemble tokenisation rather than debate.

Jewish disagreement over Zionism has always existed. But disagreement is not the same as dismantling Jewish self‑determination entirely.

Ethnicity is More Than a Religion

Part of the confusion seems to stem from a misunderstanding of Jewish identity.

Jews are not only a religious group. Jews are also a people or an ethnicity – not quite a race in the modern sense, but an ethnic and cultural community with shared ancestry, history and identity.

Jewish identity is shaped by shared history, exile, and continuity. Communities separated for centuries still preserved common traditions, texts, and collective memory. The revival of Hebrew as a modern spoken language further reinforced this sense of peoplehood, linking ancient identity with modern reality.

Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ethiopian Jews differ culturally, but share historical origins and collective memory – and once Jews are understood as a people, Jewish self‑determination becomes harder to dismiss.

The Double Standard

Most modern political discourse accepts national self‑determination as legitimate. Greeks are seen as having a right to nationhood. Kurds are widely recognised as a people without a state. Ukrainians defending their sovereignty are broadly supported.

But when it comes to Jews, the principle often changes; Jewish nationalism is often framed as uniquely illegitimate. Jewish self-determination is described as inherently problematic.

The very existence of a Jewish homeland is treated as a mistake that must be undone.

When a principle is applied universally, it is critique. When it is applied only to Jews, it becomes discrimination.

No one calls for dismantling Greece, Poland, or Pakistan – even where their creation involved conflict.

Opposing nation states in principle is a legitimate, although arguably naive, position, but opposing it for the one Jewish state is a double standard.

And this is where the argument begins to shift from political critique to something more troubling.

The consequence

Taken together, the history, the security, and the double standard reveal a clear pattern.

On the surface, anti‑Zionism seems like a political stance. Dig a bit deeper, and it’s about rejecting Jewish nationhood. Go further still, and it calls for dismantling Jewish unity.

It’s rarely described as hostility toward Jews, but the implications are clear. If every group is granted the right to self‑determination except Jews, then they’re being singled out as an exception.

And that is antisemitism.

The Shift

Anti‑Zionism used to mean rejecting a political concept.

Today, it refers to opposing an established Jewish country where millions of Jews already live.

The arguments once reflected a genuine internal Jewish debate, but today they mean something else.

Anti-Zionism may not always begin with hostility toward Jews. But when it denies Jewish self-determination and demands dismantling the Jewish homeland, it crosses a line.

And that is why anti-Zionism, in its modern form, is antisemitism.

The Balfour Declaration is often described in simple terms: Britain gave away Palestinian land to create Israel.

It is a powerful claim, but it is also misleading.

The Balfour Declaration did not create Israel. It did not promise a state. It did not define borders. And when it was issued, Britain did not even control Palestine.

Instead, it was a single paragraph inside a wartime letter, written in cautious diplomatic language, shaped by military uncertainty, competing promises, and conflicting national aspirations.

Yet this brief document would go on to influence the modern Middle East more than nearly any other diplomatic statement of the twentieth century.

The World in 1917

In 1917, Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire, ruled from Constantinople (Istanbul) by a Turkish imperial administration.

This is an important point that is often overlooked. Britain did not take Palestine from an Arab state, and there was no independent Palestinian government to take it from.

Instead, Palestine formed a region in a large, multi‑ethnic empire that had ruled much of the Middle East for several centuries – at a time when identities were shaped more by empire, religion, and local affiliation than by the modern cultural or racial boundaries often assumed today.

Arab populations lived throughout the Ottoman Empire, but they did not rule it. The empire itself was not Arab but largely governed by Turkish elites.

During the First World War, however, the Ottoman Empire was weakening. Britain, fighting alongside its allies, launched a campaign north from Egypt. By late 1917, British forces had captured Beersheba and Gaza, and Ottoman forces were retreating towards Jerusalem.

When the Balfour Declaration was issued on 2 November 1917, Britain was in the middle of this campaign. Jerusalem would fall just over a month later and the rest of Palestine would come under British control in 1918.

This challenges a common assumption. Rather than transferring territory, Britain was signalling diplomatic support during an ongoing military campaign, when the future of the region remained uncertain.

What the Balfour Declaration Actually Said

The Balfour Declaration formed part of a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour, a senior member of the British government, to Lord Rothschild, a leading figure in the British Jewish community.

The letter itself referenced “Jewish Zionist aspirations,” but the formal declaration that followed used more cautious and general language.

It stated:

“His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non‑Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.”

The language was cautious and did not promise a state. It did not define borders, and it did not guarantee sovereignty.

Instead, Britain stated that it “viewed with favour” the establishment of a “national home” and would use its “best endeavours” to facilitate this objective.

These phrases are deliberately vague. They reflect diplomatic support, not a concrete legal commitment.

Equally important is the second half of the declaration, which is frequently overlooked. It explicitly states that nothing should be done to prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non‑Jewish communities in Palestine.

From the outset, the declaration attempted to balance two objectives: support for a Jewish national home and protection for existing populations.

That balancing act would prove extremely difficult in practice and would shape much of what followed.

Jewish Return and Aspirations Before 1917

Jewish aspirations for a return to Palestine did not begin with the Balfour Declaration. Jewish communities had existed continuously for centuries in cities such as Jerusalem, Safed, Hebron, and Tiberias, maintaining a small but ongoing presence under Ottoman rule.

In the nineteenth century, migration began to increase. This was driven by religious attachment, rising nationalism, and worsening conditions for Jews in parts of Eastern Europe, including discrimination, legal restrictions, and violence.

Waves of migrants and refugees, often referred to as the First and Second Aliyah, established agricultural communities and small settlements.

In 1897, the First Zionist Congress, convened by Theodor Herzl in Basel, Switzerland, marked a significant turning point. The congress formally articulated the aim of establishing a Jewish national home in Palestine and helped transform scattered aspirations into an organised political movement.

By the early twentieth century, the communities had grown. New towns, institutions, and agricultural settlements were emerging, and the idea of a Jewish national home was gradually taking shape.

At the same time, Zionist leaders began seeking international support. They recognised that the region remained under Ottoman rule, and that long‑term national aspirations would require backing from a major power. Britain became a natural focus, particularly during the First World War, when the future of Ottoman territories was being actively discussed.

Zionist diplomacy, including efforts by figures such as Chaim Weizmann, sought to persuade British leaders that supporting a Jewish national home aligned with British strategic and political interests.

By 1917, this combination of existing Jewish presence, growing migration, and diplomatic lobbying helped create the conditions in which the Balfour Declaration emerged.

The Ottoman Empire and Arab Aspirations

Although Britain did not take Palestine from an Arab state, Arab aspirations for independence were also growing during the war. However, Arab nationalism was still developing and not universally shared, which contributed to differing expectations about independence and later interpretations of wartime promises.

Arab leaders, particularly Sharif Hussein of Mecca, hoped that the collapse of the Ottoman Empire would lead to Arab independence. Britain encouraged these hopes, partly to weaken Ottoman control and encourage Arab support against a common enemy.

While national boundaries in the Middle East were fluid, and the idea of distinct modern states had not yet fully formed, many Arab leaders envisioned a larger Arab kingdom emerging from the collapse of Ottoman rule, reflecting early Pan‑Arab aspirations.

The McMahon–Hussein Correspondence

Between 1915 and 1916, Britain exchanged letters with Sharif Hussein.

These communications were conducted by Sir Henry McMahon, the British High Commissioner in Egypt, acting on behalf of the British government. The letters suggested that Britain would support Arab independence in certain regions following the war.

However, the correspondence included an important exclusion. Britain excluded “portions of Syria lying to the west of the districts of Damascus, Homs, Hama and Aleppo.” This wording would later become highly contentious.

If one draws a line south from Damascus, all of what later became Israel lies west of Damascus. Under this interpretation, Palestine would have been excluded from the proposed Arab state.

However, the wording did not state a clear boundary. It referred to “districts,” which were not precisely defined. Arab leaders largely interpreted the exclusion as referring primarily to coastal Syria and Lebanon, not Palestine.

Britain later argued that Palestine had been excluded. Arab leaders argued that it had not.

This ambiguity lay at the heart of later disagreements. Britain may have deliberately used vague language to preserve flexibility, but it is also possible that the geography was genuinely unclear, and that long‑term consequences were not fully anticipated.

Either way, the seeds of later conflict were planted.

The Sykes‑Picot Agreement

Complicating matters further was the 1916 Sykes‑Picot Agreement, negotiated between Sir Mark Sykes, a British diplomat, and François Georges‑Picot, a French diplomat.

Acting on behalf of their governments, they sought to plan how former territories might be divided if the Allies defeated the Ottoman Empire.

The agreement split much of the Middle East into British and French spheres of influence. Unlike the McMahon correspondence, Sykes‑Picot was explicit, envisioning European control or influence over large parts of the region.

The negotiations were conducted in secret. Britain was encouraging Arab leaders to revolt against Ottoman rule, and public knowledge of European plans to divide the region could have undermined that effort.

Secrecy therefore allowed Britain and France to coordinate their strategic interests while maintaining wartime diplomacy with Arab leaders. When the agreement later became public, it fuelled resentment and a large number of Arabs saw it as contradicting wartime promises of independence.

For many observers, Sykes‑Picot represented a greater limitation on Arab independence than the Balfour Declaration itself.

The Partition of Transjordan

Another frequently overlooked development occurred in 1921–1922, when Britain separated the Mandate area east of the Jordan River from the area west of the Jordan River.

Effectively removing a large portion of the territory from the scope of a Jewish homeland, Britain took this decision partly to compensate the Hashemite leadership after they had lost control of the Hejaz – while also attempting to honour wartime commitments and stabilise the region under British influence.

Jewish settlement was then concentrated to the west of the river, and the region – known as Transjordan – was later to become the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Many influential Zionist leaders expressed disappointment, viewing it as a significant reduction in the territory originally associated with the Jewish national home.

The Mandate: When the Declaration Became Law

A commonly misunderstood fact is that the Balfour Declaration had no legal force when it was issued. It was a letter; not a treaty, not legislation, and not binding international law.

Its significance grew later, when, in 1922, it was incorporated into the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine.

After the war, the future of former Ottoman territories was debated among the Allied powers. By this time, the idea of a Jewish national home had already gained political traction.

British officials were increasingly influenced by longstanding religious and historical sympathy for Jewish return, and the belief that a Jewish national home could contribute to stability in a strategically important region near the Suez Canal.

There were also humanitarian considerations. Jewish communities in Eastern Europe had experienced decades of persecution, violence and legal discrimination. For some British policymakers, the idea of a Jewish national home was seen as a practical response to ongoing instability and insecurity faced by Jewish populations.

In 1920, at the San Remo Conference, Britain was assigned responsibility for Palestine, and the principles of the Balfour Declaration were formally adopted by the Allied powers.

The Mandate incorporated the language of the Balfour Declaration and tasked Britain with facilitating the establishment of a Jewish national home, while protecting the rights of existing communities.

The declaration had moved from a wartime political statement to an internationally recognised framework endorsed by the League of Nations.

Reactions to this development were mixed. Arab leaders, increasingly opposed the Mandate, arguing that it prioritised Jewish national aspirations while limiting Arab independence. Zionist leaders, however, viewed the Mandate as an important step toward international recognition of Jewish aspirations.

Protests and political opposition began to grow, laying the groundwork for tensions that would intensify in the years that followed.

The Clause: Nothing Shall Be Done

The Balfour Declaration included a clause stating that the rights of existing non‑Jewish communities should not be prejudiced.

“... it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non‑Jewish communities in Palestine, ...”

At least initially, this was largely the case. The declaration itself did not immediately alter governance, ownership, or daily life. Jewish immigration continued gradually, widespread violence had not yet developed, and British policy remained cautious and uncertain.

However, fears began to grow among segments of the Arab population. Early disturbances, including the 1920 Nebi Musa riots and the 1921 Jaffa riots, reflected rising tensions and uncertainty about the future.

Some of these fears were grounded in uncertainty about the future, while others were shaped by rumours, political mobilisation, and competing nationalist aspirations.

As opposition hardened, tensions increased. Protests, resistance, and violence contributed to a worsening atmosphere, which in turn reinforced fears on all sides.

This dynamic risked becoming self‑reinforcing. The more tensions escalated, the more each side feared the intentions of the other. Attempts to push back against perceived future threats often contributed to the very instability that many feared.

Over time, mistrust deepened, and coexistence became more difficult, creating a cycle in which fear, reaction, and escalation fed into one another.

Myth, reality and the world that followed

The Balfour Declaration was a short diplomatic statement issued during wartime uncertainty. It expressed support for a Jewish national home, but left crucial questions unresolved and open to interpretation.

At the same time, the overlapping promises, secret agreements, and shifting wartime diplomacy created a sense of uncertainty and mistrust. From both Arab and Jewish perspectives, British decision‑making increasingly appeared inconsistent and, at times, underhanded.

Arab leaders saw Western involvement as shaping a regional order that reflected imperial interests rather than independence, while Zionist institutions grew frustrated with decisions ranging from the appointment of the Mufti of Jerusalem to later policy shifts culminating in the 1939 White Paper.

Over the following decades, British policy continued to evolve through difficult and sometimes contradictory decisions, each attempting to balance competing pressures while often deepening tensions on the ground.

Understanding this complexity does not resolve the conflict. But it does help to clarify how a short statement, written during a moment of uncertainty, became part of a much larger and more complicated story. It outlined no borders, promised no sovereignty, and was issued before Britain had even taken control of Palestine.

Instead, it expressed support for a Jewish national home within a complex and uncertain environment.

The result was not a single turning point, but a gradual and complex reshaping of the Middle East, influenced by fear, aspiration, diplomacy, and unintended consequences.

Introduction

Religious critics of Israel often draw on the Biblical narrative of God granting the land of Israel to the Jews, using a simple argument: God exiled the Jews as punishment for disobedience, and therefore only a divinely sanctioned change in behaviour – and divine approval – can bring them back.

However, this framing risks oversimplifying a far more complex Biblical narrative. Exile in the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) is rarely presented as permanent punishment, nor as a final rejection. Instead, it often appears as part of a broader cycle of warning, dispersion, endurance, and eventual gathering.

The Tanakh, including the Torah, does not speak only of exile. It speaks repeatedly of return. The prophets do not describe a permanent removal, but a scattering followed by a gathering.

The narrative that unfolds across centuries is therefore not one of condemnation, but of continuity. A people dispersed, yet not erased. A connection interrupted, yet not broken.

This article explores that recurring pattern – exile, endurance, and return – across Jewish scripture, rabbinic tradition, and even Islamic sources.

The story of Israel, in religious tradition, is not simply one of exile.

It is also the story of return.

A Covenant at the Beginning

The story begins in the Torah. In Genesis, a promise is made to Abraham:

“I assign the land you sojourn in to you and your offspring to come, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting holding. I will be their God.”
– Genesis 17:8

The language is notable. Not a temporary grant. Not a conditional moment. An everlasting possession.

Earlier, the promise appears again:

“To your offspring I assign this land …”
– Genesis 15:18

From the beginning, land and identity are bound together.

Exile Was Predicted – But So Was Return

The Torah does not shy away from exile. In fact, it predicts it.

In Deuteronomy, the warning is clear:

“The LORD will scatter you among all the peoples from one end of the earth to the other …”
– Deuteronomy 28:64

Yet the narrative does not end there. Just two chapters later, the tone shifts dramatically:

“Then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.”
– Deuteronomy 30:3

And further:

“Even if your outcasts are at the ends of the world, from there the LORD your God will gather you, from there He will fetch you.”
– Deuteronomy 30:4

The pattern becomes unmistakable. Dispersion is followed by gathering. Exile is followed by return.

History mirrors this pattern. The Assyrians conquered the northern Kingdom of Israel. The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and exiled much of the population. Centuries later, the Romans dispersed Jewish communities even further.

Yet despite these successive exiles, the idea of return remained embedded in religious tradition.

The Prophets Echo the Same Theme

The prophets return to this idea again and again.

Jeremiah writes:

“And I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places to which I have banished you – declares the LORD – and I will bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.”
– Jeremiah 29:14

Ezekiel reinforces the same vision:

“I will take you from among the nations and gather you from all the countries, and I will bring you back to your own land.”
– Ezekiel 36:24

Then comes a remarkable detail:

“I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean.”
– Ezekiel 36:25

Return comes first. Renewal follows.

Rather than waiting for perfection before returning, the text suggests that return itself is part of transformation.

The prophetic vision of return is not only theological. In the Biblical narrative, it becomes historical.

Return in History

The Biblical narrative does not only predict return. It records it.

After the Babylonian exile, Jews returned under Persian rule. The decree of Cyrus reads:

“The LORD God of Heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has charged me with building Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Anyone of you of all His people – may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem that is in Judah and build the House of the LORD God of Israel, the God that is in Jerusalem”
– Ezra 1:2–3

This was not a miraculous mass event. It was gradual, political, and imperfect. Yet it is portrayed positively.

Return from exile, in the Biblical narrative, is not forbidden. It is expected.

The Talmud and the “Three Oaths”

Some Jewish opponents of modern Israel, such as Neturei Karta, point to the “Three Oaths” found in the Talmud.

In modern times, these oaths have been revived by some groups as a religious argument against political Zionism.

While they may appear to present a strong argument against Jewish return, a proper understanding of the nature of the Talmud changes the picture.

The Talmud is a collection of rabbinic discussions and debates compiled between roughly 200–500 CE. It contains both binding legal rulings (Halakha) and narrative or interpretive material (Aggadah). Not every passage represents law; many preserve discussion, disagreement, or interpretation.

The Three Oaths appear in Tractate Ketubot 111a. They are commonly summarised as:

• Jews should not “ascend like a wall”

• Jews should not rebel against the nations

• The nations should not oppress Jews excessively

Because this passage appears in a narrative discussion rather than a legal ruling, major legal authorities, including Maimonides, did not codify these oaths as binding Halakha.

Even within the text itself, the nations are bound by an oath not to oppress Jews excessively. Many rabbinic authorities later argued that repeated persecution violated this condition.

Rather than presenting a clear prohibition, the Three Oaths reflect an internal debate within Jewish tradition – one in which return remains a possibility.

A Continuous Presence

Another common assumption is that Jews disappeared entirely from the land during exile. Historical records suggest otherwise.

Jewish communities remained in Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed, and Tiberias. Populations rose and fell, but the connection endured.

This was not a story of abandonment, but of persistence.

The Islamic Tradition

Some assume that Islamic tradition rejects Jewish claims to the land entirely. The Qur’an, however, presents a more nuanced picture.

In the Qur’an, Moses (Musa) addresses the Children of Israel:

“O my people! Enter the Holy Land which Allah has destined for you …”
– Qur’an 5:21

Elsewhere:

“And We made the oppressed people successors of the eastern and western lands, which We had showered with blessings. In this way the noble Word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel for what they had endured.”
– Qur’an 7:137

And again:

“We settled the Children of Israel in a blessed land, and granted them good, lawful provisions.”
– Qur’an 10:93

Another passage suggests gathering after dispersion:

“Reside in the land, but when the promise of the Hereafter comes to pass, We will bring you all together.”
– Qur’an 17:104

Islamic scholars differ widely on whether these verses refer to ancient events, future events, or broader theological themes. Nevertheless, these passages acknowledge themes of exile, presence, and return.

Beyond Religion

Across Jewish scripture, rabbinic tradition, and even Islamic texts, a consistent idea emerges: a people connected to a land, scattered across time, yet never fully separated from it.

Return is not introduced as a new concept. It is woven into the story from the beginning.

Yet religious narratives explain meaning, while history explains origin. Regardless of belief, one fact remains.

The Jewish people emerged in this land. Their language developed there. Their culture formed there. Their earliest kingdoms stood there. Their texts were written about it, and their prayers turned toward it for centuries.

Even if the religious narrative were removed entirely, the historical connection would remain. Had the ancient Israelites followed a different faith, worshipped differently, or held entirely different beliefs, the geographic and cultural origins would still point to the same place.

A Final Note

The religious claim is only one part of the story. The deeper connections – history, culture, civilisation and genetics – reach far beyond religion itself.

Return, in this sense, is not only a religious motif, but a cultural memory carried across centuries. The full story is deeper, older, and significantly more enduring.

Few figures in the modern Middle East loom as large – or as controversially – as Yasser Arafat.

To many Palestinians he was the father of their national struggle.

To many Israelis he is the man who built and led a movement that used violence while speaking the language of peace.

Arafat spent his life balancing two identities: guerrilla commander and international statesman.

He helped build the modern Palestinian national movement and push it onto the world stage, yet he also presided over violence that hardened the conflict and, at key moments, seemed unable – or unwilling – to make the final compromises needed for peace.

Early life and the making of a revolutionary

Born in Cairo in 1929, his full name was Mohammed Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini, following the common Arabic pattern of personal name followed by the names of the father and grandfather and a family or clan name.

In public life he became known simply as “Yasser Arafat”, a shorter public name drawn from part of his longer personal name that was easier for supporters, journalists and foreign officials to use. Among his followers he was also often called “Abu Ammar”, a traditional Arabic kunya meaning “father of Ammar” (a reference to Ammar ibn Yasir, a revered companion of the Prophet Muhammad).

Arafat spent part of his childhood in Jerusalem, though most of his upbringing took place in Cairo. Later he would emphasise the Jerusalem connection. Even early on, he understood that politics often begins with symbolism.

He studied civil engineering at Cairo University and became involved in nationalist student politics. The defining event of his generation was the 1948 Arab–Israeli war, which created hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees and reshaped the region.

Arafat briefly travelled to the conflict zone and joined irregular Arab fighters linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. His role appears to have been minor. He never served in a conventional army.

His real career would emerge elsewhere – in revolutionary politics.

The Mufti Connection

His family belonged to the al‑Qudwa clan, a Gaza‑connected family that sometimes used the additional name al‑Husseini.

That surname later fuelled a persistent claim that Arafat was the nephew of Haj Amin al‑Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem who collaborated with Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

The truth was less dramatic. While some sources describe Arafat’s father as a distant relative of the Mufti, the family was not part of the powerful Jerusalem Husseini political dynasty.

Still, the name carried weight, and Arafat never worked to clarify the ambiguity – instead he openly admired the Mufti, publicly referring to him as a political influence and mentor.

The birth of Fatah

By the late 1950s Arafat was living in Kuwait among a growing Palestinian diaspora. There he and several colleagues founded a new movement: Fatah.

Their idea was simple but powerful. Palestinians themselves would lead the struggle against Israel rather than relying on Arab governments.

Pan‑Arab nationalism dominated regional politics, but Arafat rejected that model.

In the early 1960s the first Fatah attacks began. They were small operations: a group crossing a border at night, a bomb placed along a water pipeline, a raid finished before sunrise.

Militarily they achieved little, but politically they meant everything.

For the first time since 1948 Palestinians themselves were carrying out attacks against Israel rather than waiting for Arab armies to support them.

After the Arab defeat in the 1967 Six‑Day War, guerrilla movements suddenly looked more credible than conventional armies. Fatah’s influence surged.

The Palestine Liberation Organisation

The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) was founded in 1964 under the sponsorship of the Arab League, largely under Egyptian influence. The PLO would later receive support from the Soviet bloc, which promoted anti-Zionist narratives during the Cold War.

Its founding charter rejected the legitimacy of Israel and called for the “liberation” of Palestine – meaning the dismantling of the Israel and its replacement with a single Palestinian state. At the time this was not framed in terms of a two‑state solution or the ceasefire lines created after the 1948 war – it had one goal, the destruction of the Jewish state.

After the 1967 defeat, Arafat’s Fatah movement gained enormous prestige among Palestinians. By 1969 Fatah had effectively taken control of the organisation and Arafat was elected chairman, transforming it from an Arab‑controlled body into a Palestinian‑led national movement.

Over time its rhetoric and political goals evolved, eventually leading to Arafat’s recognition of Israel in 1988 and the negotiations that followed.

Inventing a national identity

Arafat’s greatest achievement was not military, it was symbolic.

Before the 1960s Palestinian identity existed but was often overshadowed by broader Arab nationalism. After the 1948 war, Gaza was occupied by Egypt and the West Bank annexed by Jordan. Palestinians were typically described simply as displaced Arabs.

Arafat helped change that.

Through relentless political theatre he helped turn Palestinian nationalism into a distinct global cause.

His own image became part of that transformation. Arafat almost always appeared wearing a black‑and‑white chequered keffiyeh. The headscarf had existed for centuries across the Middle East, but under Arafat it became a symbol of Palestinian resistance.

Observers often noted the way he arranged it so one side draped forward, forming a shape resembling the territory west of the Jordan River: Israel.

Whether deliberate or mythologised later, the symbolism stuck.

The Palestinian flag followed a similar path. Once associated mainly with Pan‑Arab nationalism, it increasingly came to represent a distinct Palestinian political identity.

Through imagery, rhetoric and persistence, Arafat helped transform the Palestinian cause into a global national movement.

Revolutionary and diplomat

The rise of the PLO coincided with some of the most violent episodes of the conflict.

During the late 1960s and 1970s Palestinian militant organisations carried out bombings, hijackings and cross‑border attacks that drew global attention.

The most notorious moment came in 1972 when members of the Black September Organisation attacked the Munich Olympic Village and murdered eleven Israeli athletes.

Historians still debate the exact relationship between Arafat and groups like Black September. But the violence of the era shaped how the Palestinian movement was perceived internationally.

At the same time Arafat pursued diplomacy.

In 1974 he appeared before the United Nations General Assembly wearing military fatigues and a holster. His message was carefully crafted:

“I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom fighter’s gun.”

It was political theatre – but effective theatre.

By the late 1970s the PLO had gained international recognition as the representative of the Palestinian people.

The First Intifada

In December 1987 the First Intifada erupted.

It began with a traffic accident in Gaza in which an Israeli truck collided with Palestinian workers. Rumours quickly spread that the crash was a reprisal for the recent killing of an Israeli, and protests soon erupted and spread across the West Bank and Gaza.

Young Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers. Burning tyres blocked roads. Israeli troops responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and sometimes live ammunition.

Television cameras broadcast the confrontation around the world.

The uprising was largely spontaneous and caught the PLO leadership in exile off guard. But it transformed the political landscape.

Oslo: The door opens

In 1988 Arafat formally recognised Israel’s right to exist, opening the door to negotiations.

Five years later the Oslo Accords produced a historic breakthrough. Israel and the PLO recognised each other. Arafat returned to Gaza to lead the newly created Palestinian Authority.

For a brief moment the conflict appeared to be moving toward peace.

Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres all received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yet the foundations were fragile.

The Palestinian Authority developed into a highly centralised system revolving around Arafat himself, with power concentrated among loyal security forces and political allies.

Arafat governed less like a conventional president and more like a revolutionary movement leader. Power flowed through personal loyalty networks, overlapping security services, and patronage. Rival factions were balanced against each other, ensuring that no single group could challenge him.

The system helped him maintain control over a fragmented national movement, but it also prevented the emergence of stable political institutions.

Camp David and the road to the Second Intifada

In July 2000 the future of the conflict hung in the balance at Camp David.

For two weeks negotiators debated borders, settlements, Jerusalem, and the fate of Palestinian refugees.

When the summit ended there was no agreement.

American officials involved in the talks said Arafat rejected the proposal on the table and offered no detailed counter‑proposal. The proposal itself envisioned the creation of a Palestinian state in most of the West Bank and Gaza, with land swaps to compensate for Israeli settlements and a form of Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem.

Palestinian leaders argued the offer did not meet their core demands, particularly regarding the status of Jerusalem, borders, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Whatever the interpretation, the moment passed.

Within months the Second Intifada erupted.

This uprising was far more violent than the first. Suicide bombings struck buses, cafés and restaurants inside Israeli cities. Israel launched major military operations across the West Bank, later arguing that Arafat had either allowed or failed to prevent the violence that followed.

The trust created during the Oslo years collapsed.

The legacy of Arafat

Yasser Arafat died in 2004 after more than three decades at the centre of Palestinian politics. His death left a political vacuum that was never fully resolved, eventually contributing to the growing division between the Fatah movement he had led and the rising power of Hamas.

To supporters he created a national identity for Palestinians and forced the world to recognise their struggle. For admirers he remains a symbol of resistance.

To critics he was a terrorist who never truly abandoned violence and failed to convert international recognition into a lasting peace. For many he represents one of the great missed opportunities of the modern Middle East.

Arafat succeeded in creating the symbols and political identity of a nation. But when history offered a chance to transform that movement into a stable political settlement, he hesitated.

For historians he remains something more complicated: a leader defined by contradiction – the man who helped create a nation in the political imagination, yet never quite managed to build the peace that nation would need.

Historians estimate that somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 people answered the call to the First Crusade, though only a fraction would survive the long journey to Jerusalem.

It began, as so many conflicts in this land did, with a call from afar.

In 1095, Pope Urban II stood before a crowd in Clermont, France, and urged Christendom to march east – to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslim rule. What followed was less a pilgrimage than a campaign of conquest, driven as much by greed and ambition as by piety.

The Crusades were far from the first foreign conquest of this land. Long before them it had been ruled by empires including the Romans and Byzantines, and later the Islamic caliphates that swept through the Levant in the seventh century. What made the Crusades different was that they represented Europe’s first large‑scale return to the region after centuries of absence: a collision of religion, empire, and imagination that left scars still visible today.

Background: The Seljuks and the Road to War

By the eleventh century, power in the Islamic world had shifted. The Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad still held religious authority in theory, but real power had fragmented among regional rulers. One of the most powerful of these new forces was the Seljuk Turks, a nomadic people from Central Asia who had converted to Sunni Islam and built an empire stretching from Persia to Anatolia while ruling in the caliph’s name.

In 1071 the Seljuks defeated the Byzantine army at the Battle of Manzikert, a disaster that opened much of Anatolia to Turkic settlement and pushed Emperor Alexios I Komnenos to seek military assistance from Western Europe. They later seized Jerusalem in 1073 from the Shi’a Fatimid Caliphate of Egypt.

Under Fatimid rule Christian pilgrims had generally been able to reach the city, but under the Seljuks access became uncertain. Reports of harassment and attacks on pilgrims – some real, others exaggerated – spread across Europe, feeding fear and outrage. The Byzantines, reeling from their losses, appealed to the Pope for help against the advancing Turks, a request Pope Urban II would transform into a wider religious cause: the liberation of Jerusalem and the salvation of Christendom.

Origins and Motives

Europe itself was fractured, restless, and hungry – spiritually and materially. The Papacy sought to reassert authority after centuries of decline; the nobility sought land and fortune; and many ordinary people sought redemption and escape from hardship.

Pope Urban II also had a strategic motive: by aiding the Byzantine Empire against the Turks he could strengthen papal influence over secular rulers and perhaps even ease the recent East–West Schism of 1054. In calling for a united Christian campaign, Urban saw an opportunity to rally Europe’s quarrelling princes under one holy banner. It was political calculation cloaked in sanctity.

For decades, Western Christians had travelled to Jerusalem in growing numbers – monks, nobles, and ordinary believers alike.

Reports of robbery and murder along the pilgrim routes, especially after the Seljuk Turks seized Jerusalem, gave the papal message its emotional power. To protect these pilgrims became both a moral cause and a practical mission. The newly founded Knights Templar embodied this duality: warrior monks who escorted travellers and safeguarded their funds through an early system of banking.

When Urban spoke at Clermont, he wove all these strands together – fear, faith, ambition, and outrage – into one unifying purpose. His words turned warfare into worship, and the symbol of this new form of sanctified violence was the cross.

The March to The Holy Land

The movement that became known as the First Crusade actually unfolded in two waves. The first was the so‑called People’s Crusade of 1096, a largely unorganised mass of peasants, zealots, and minor knights who set off before the main armies. Many of the attacks on Jewish communities in the Rhineland occurred during this phase, and most of these groups were eventually destroyed before reaching the Holy Land.

The second wave, sometimes called the Princes’ Crusade, consisted of more organised forces led by European nobles. These armies would ultimately march across Anatolia and the Levant and capture Jerusalem in 1099.

Tens of thousands left their homes believing they were serving God, yet they also sought land, wealth, and redemption – a potent mix of faith and opportunism that would echo through later centuries of European expansion.

The Rhineland Massacres

As they moved east, the Crusaders left devastation behind. Most of the violence occurred during the chaotic People’s Crusade, when loosely organised bands moved ahead of the main armies. Jewish communities along the Rhine – where historians estimate roughly 4,000–10,000 Jews were killed in the massacres of 1096 – became some of the first victims of this movement.

In Worms, Mainz, and Cologne, mobs of armed pilgrims slaughtered entire populations, convinced that killing non‑believers brought divine favour. In several towns local bishops attempted to protect Jewish residents by sheltering them in churches or episcopal residences, though these efforts often failed once the crowds forced their way inside.

For many participants the violence was framed as part of the same holy struggle they believed awaited them in Jerusalem: European Jews were cast as enemies of Christ within Christendom itself. Some crusading groups seized Jewish property to fund their journey east, and in a number of cases Jews were forced to choose between conversion and death.

These perpetrators were not disciplined knights but mobs of peasants, minor knights, and opportunists – Europe’s dispossessed answering a spiritual call with earthly violence.

The Taking of Jerusalem

By the time the First Crusade reached Jerusalem in 1099, the Fatimid Caliphate of Egypt had already retaken the city from the Seljuks in 1098, yet the campaign had transformed into something far greater – and far darker – than the Church had likely foreseen. The city was taken in blood. Contemporary chroniclers described Crusaders wading through bodies in the streets as Muslim and Jewish inhabitants were killed during the capture of the city.

The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was born: a Christian enclave carved into the Muslim East, built on conquest, hierarchy, and imported European rule.

For Jews, the Crusades were a double tragedy. In Europe they were hunted as heretics; in the Holy Land they were caught between warring empires. Crusaders saw them as part of the same world that had to be “purified,” while Muslim rulers, though continuing to offer Jews legal protection under the dhimmi system, increasingly imposed restrictions and regarded them with suspicion – more threads in the long fabric of exile and fear.

What began as a campaign to “liberate” Jerusalem became a century-spanning cycle of revenge. Crusade followed counter-crusade; faith answered faith. Over time, the holy cause gave way to commerce and politics – and finally – to ruin.

The crusading kingdoms collapsed, but the idea of the Holy Land as Europe’s to reclaim never truly died. It lingered in the Western imagination, ready to reappear under new flags and modern justifications.

The Word “Crusade”

The very term crusade comes from the Latin crux, meaning “cross.” To go on crusade was to be crucesignatus – “signed with the cross.” The early participants didn’t see themselves as “crusaders” in the modern sense; they were pilgrims with swords, taking up arms as an act of faith. The Church literally branded the campaign with holiness.

The word itself evolved later. In medieval Latin, cruciata referred to something marked by the cross, and in Old French it became croisade. English adopted crusade much later, in the sixteenth century – long after the actual campaigns had ended. By then, the word had taken on a new life: any zealous moral mission could be called a “crusade.”

That linguistic drift matters. The same word that once justified massacre came to signify righteousness. In its journey from blood to virtue, crusade became a symbol of how language sanctifies power – a reminder that words themselves can conquer.

Later Crusades

The capture of Jerusalem in 1099 was the high point of the crusading movement. Later crusades attempted to repeat that success, but none matched the scale or impact of the first. The Second Crusade (1147–1149) was launched after the fall of the Crusader state of Edessa, yet it ended in failure when European armies were defeated in Anatolia and outside Damascus. The Third Crusade (1189–1192), led by figures such as Richard the Lionheart and the Muslim leader Saladin, managed to recover parts of the coast but failed to retake Jerusalem itself.

Subsequent crusades grew increasingly fragmented and political. Some never even reached the Holy Land. The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) notoriously diverted to Constantinople, where crusaders sacked the Christian city they had supposedly come to defend. Later expeditions achieved little beyond brief coastal footholds or diplomatic arrangements. For the purposes of understanding the history of Israel and Palestine, these campaigns mattered far less than the First Crusade, which created the Crusader states and permanently altered the region’s political and religious landscape.

Legacy

The Crusades led to the creation of a series of Crusader states in the Levant – including the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch, the County of Tripoli, and the County of Edessa – which survived for nearly two centuries. Over time these states were gradually reconquered by Muslim powers, most famously under the leadership of Saladin, who retook Jerusalem in 1187. The Crusades reshaped Europe and the Middle East alike.

They deepened the divide between Christianity and Islam, devastated centuries‑old Jewish communities in parts of Europe, and laid early foundations for the idea that the Holy Land was a prize to be claimed by outsiders. Their ruins still mark the landscape – not just the castles scattered across Syria and Palestine, but the moral architecture of Western ambition.

When the Crusader states finally collapsed – most decisively with the fall of Acre in 1291 – the Latin Christian experiment in the Holy Land came to an end. In the centuries that followed, new powers would emerge to dominate the region, most importantly the rising Ottoman Empire in the fourteenth century, which would eventually absorb Palestine into a far larger imperial system.

The wars of faith had ended, but the idea of holy land – and holy ownership – endured.

Imagine finding a document that claims to explain everything: why empires fall, why revolutions erupt, why markets crash, why familiar hierarchies collapse while new ones quietly take their place.

It does not read like a rant or a sermon. It presents itself as a plan.

The tone is calm, methodical, almost bureaucratic, as if these were simply minutes taken at a meeting no one was meant to know about. What is striking is how little there is to it. This is not a vast tome or a dense ideological treatise, but a slim booklet, barely more than a pamphlet. Easy to read. Easy to pass on. Easy to absorb without effort.

Within those few pages is a confident outline of a long-term strategy for weakening nations, bending institutions, manipulating economies, and ruling from the shadows without ever appearing to rule at all.

The document exists. It is called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

It has been exposed, again and again, as a forgery: a political fabrication, crudely plagiarised and assembled for a specific purpose. And yet it refuses to disappear. Not because it is persuasive on its merits, but because the story it tells serves a purpose.

What the Protocols Claim to Be

The Protocols present themselves as the secret minutes of meetings held by a Jewish leadership cabal. From the outset, Jews are named not as individuals, but as a collective actor, jointly responsible for a deliberate plan to dominate non‑Jewish societies. Guilt is not personal or conditional; it is presented as inherent and permanent. What follows is not rage or theology, but strategy: a step-by-step outline of how societies are to be weakened from within.

According to the text, morals are eroded, institutions corrupted, governments destabilised, economies manipulated. Revolutions are encouraged, the press is bent into shape, education softened, authority hollowed out. Nothing is accidental. Nothing is spontaneous. Chaos is not failure; it is design.

The power of the document lies less in its content than in its delivery. There is no overt call to hatred, no emotional outburst. Instead, there is calculated explanation, a tone that invites the reader to feel clever rather than angry. It never instructs the reader to hate Jews; it invites them to observe, to notice, to suspect.

Where the Protocols Actually Came From

The Protocols did not emerge from secret gatherings or hidden archives. It was assembled in late Tsarist Russia, a regime under pressure and running out of answers.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the Russian Empire was wobbling. Political opposition was growing, revolutionary movements were spreading, the economy was unstable, and the monarchy was losing its grip. In such conditions, abstract explanations for disorder were less useful than a named culprit.

The Protocols appear to have been compiled by figures connected to the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police. It was not written from scratch. Large sections were lifted almost word-for-word from an earlier work: Maurice Joly’s 1864 political satire Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu.

Joly had written a critique of authoritarian rule under Napoleon III. His target was tyranny, not Jews. In the Protocols, Napoleon disappears and Jews take his place. A critique of power is transformed into an accusation of ethnic conspiracy. The plagiarism is obvious, but subtlety was never the point.

How the Forgery Spread

The book did not stay in Russia for long. After the Russian Revolution, it travelled west with émigrés fleeing chaos and defeat. Detached from their origins and stripped of context, it was repackaged as revelation.

Europe after the First World War was fertile ground for this kind of story. Empires had collapsed, borders had shifted, and old certainties had vanished. Many people felt humiliated, disoriented, and angry, without knowing precisely why. The Protocols offered clarity, a single explanation that tied everything together.

It was translated, serialised, and circulated through newspapers and pamphlets. Political movements adopted it eagerly, not because it was well argued, but because it was useful. Repetition did the rest.

Exposure, and Why It Didn’t Matter

This is usually where such stories end. Someone checks the sources, notices the copying, and publishes the proof.

That happened. In 1921, journalists at The Times laid the forgery bare, publishing side-by-side comparisons showing verbatim plagiarism from the earlier French manuscript, leaving no room for doubt. But the plagiarism was not the only tell.

The text contains anachronisms and internal inconsistencies that make its claimed origins impossible: concepts and political anxieties that only make sense after the turn of the twentieth century are retrofitted into supposed nineteenth-century meetings. There is no authenticated original manuscript, only shifting editions that change from printing to printing.

Linguistically, the work bears the marks of having been composed from French sources and awkwardly rendered into Russian, rather than the other way around. Even its first promoters could not agree on where it came from, who recorded it, or when.

Taken together, the evidence leaves no room for doubt. By any reasonable standard, the Protocols should have died there.

It did not. For those already invested in the conclusion, exposure changed nothing. The problem was never a lack of evidence; it was what the document made possible.

From Forgery to Worldview

The influence of this worldview did not remain abstract. The Protocols circulated widely in interwar Europe and helped reinforce existing antisemitic beliefs among political movements that were already looking for an all‑encompassing explanation for national decline. It did not create Nazi ideology, but it helped reinforce it, providing Adolf Hitler and others with what appeared to be documentary confirmation that Jews were not merely an internal enemy, but a coordinated global one.

The Protocols did not invent the antisemitic tropes it contained. Hostility towards Jews had existed for centuries, rooted in religion, exclusion, and economic resentment. What the Protocols provided was something new: a system.

It transformed prejudice into explanation, suspicion into insight, hatred into analysis. Every failure could now be blamed on hidden manipulation. Every reform dismissed as camouflage. Every contradiction folded back in as proof of cunning. The text itself became less important than the logic it imagined.

Why the Story Worked

The Protocols succeeded because it offered something deeply attractive: simplicity.

To people with existing prejudice, it presented a world that seemed to make sense, offering moral clarity in a time of upheaval and a single enemy behind countless unrelated problems. Most importantly, it redirected blame; economic collapse was no longer mismanagement, political corruption was no longer local, and social decay was no longer complicated. It was all someone else’s fault.

This is the true function of conspiracy thinking. It does not explain the world; it excuses it.

Money, Banks, and Selective Vision

The claim that Jews control global finance did not arise from careful observation. It arose from selective vision.

Jewish names are noticed and remembered, while non-Jewish names are ignored. Prominence becomes proof; absence goes unrecorded. This is not analysis, but pattern-hunting driven by expectation.

Global finance, in reality, is sprawling, competitive, fragmented, and often chaotic. Its centres of power have emerged from many different national, cultural, and institutional traditions.

Consider just a handful of major financial organisations whose origins have nothing to do with Jewish networks or continuity: J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, BNP Paribas, Société Générale, UBS, Santander, and the vast post-war accounting and consulting empires that grew into firms such as Coopers & Lybrand, Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.

These institutions arose from British imperial finance, American industrial capitalism, European state banking, colonial trade, and post-war corporate expansion. Their histories are public, documented, and often deeply entangled with governments, wars, and national interests. They do not form a single bloc, do not act in concert, and frequently compete or undermine one another.

The conspiracy survives by looking at a narrow slice of the picture and ignoring everything else. A few familiar names are held up as proof, while the rest of the financial world fades conveniently out of view. It persists when people see only what it wants to see.

The Rothschild Fixation

No conspiracy narrative is complete without a symbol. For the Protocols, the Rothschild family became that symbol.

The Rothschilds were a European banking family who rose to prominence in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by doing something relatively mundane but highly effective: building a cross-border family network that moved money, credit, and information faster than rivals in an age before modern communications. They financed governments during wars, managed state debt, and reinvested profits into railways, industry, and infrastructure, becoming wealthy in the process.

One prominent family is inflated into a stand-in for millions. Wealth becomes limitless, influence omnipresent, history dissolves into myth. Over time, repetition does what evidence cannot, hardening suspicion into certainty. The Rothschilds matter here not for what they did, but for what they are made to represent.

The Protocols Without the Protocols

The ideas embedded in the Protocols did not vanish with their exposure. Instead, they mutated, shedding explicit references while retaining their underlying structure.

Today, few people openly cite the document itself. They no longer need to. The structure remains intact, even as the labels change.

Elders become Zionists. Secret meetings become Israel lobby groups. World domination becomes influence. The same pattern is then applied elsewhere: a small number of Jewish figures in media, politics, or business are treated as evidence of a hidden network, while the much larger number of non-Jewish actors are quietly recast as compromised, coerced, or controlled.

Criticism of Israeli policy – like criticism of any government – is normal in a democracy. What echoes the Protocols is not political disagreement, but the shift from critique to claims of hidden global coordination and the assumption that events only make sense if there is a single, coordinated hand behind everything.

The Legacy: From the Protocols to Modern Conspiracies

One of the most prominent modern examples is the conspiracy theorist David Icke, who has at various points claimed that the Protocols was genuine or at least fundamentally truthful.

Icke has insisted that his theories are not about Jews, instead referring to “ultra‑Zionists” or “Rothschild Zionists” as the real source of global control. Yet the structure of the claim remains unchanged: a small, hidden group, disproportionately Jewish in composition, is said to manipulate media, finance, politics, and war, while non‑Jewish actors are portrayed as compromised, coerced, or controlled.

His denial persists, but the story is recognisably the same.

Why the Legacy Still Matters

The real danger of the Protocols was never confined to the lies it told about Jews. It was the way it taught people to think, and the categories it encouraged people to confuse.

Once a society accepts the idea of a hidden enemy orchestrating events from behind the scenes, evidence stops mattering. Denials become confirmation, contradictions become camouflage. Complex political movements are reduced to secret plots; historical struggles are recast as schemes for domination.

This has had lasting consequences for how Zionism itself is understood. Zionism is not, and never was, a plan for world control or global manipulation. It emerged in the late nineteenth century as an emancipation movement, rooted in the idea of Jewish self‑determination: that Jews, like other peoples in an age of collapsing empires and rising national movements, had the right to political agency and security in their ancestral homeland.

A movement concerned with refuge, autonomy, and survival has been reimagined as a covert strategy for power. Political disagreement has been remodelled as proof of conspiracy; Jewish nationhood has transformed into evidence of global intent.

The lies behind the Protocols endure not because they were persuasive, but because they are convenient. They offer a simple answer that relieves people of responsibility and replaces complexity with a ready-made scapegoat.

That is why, long after the forgery was exposed, its shadow still falls across the present.

In winter, the town went quiet early. Smoke hung low over the roofs, and the poorly paved streets became treacherous beneath boots worn thin by years of use. Shops closed before dark, not because business was done, but because it was safer that way. Everyone knew who belonged here and who did not.

The rules were rarely written down, but they were understood all the same. You could trade, marry, pray, raise children, even argue loudly in the street. But you could not leave. Not really. This strip of land, stretching across the edge of an empire, was where millions of Jews were allowed to exist, and nowhere else.

It was known as cherta osedlosti (черта оседлости) – in English, the Pale of Settlement.

A Boundary Without Walls

The town was not unusual. There were hundreds like it, scattered across a wide arc of territory from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Different names, different dialects, but the same unspoken limits. People did not arrive here so much as discover that this was where they were permitted to remain. The Pale was not marked on the ground. There were no fences, no gates, nothing you could touch. It existed in paperwork, in permits, in the sudden way a journey stopped being possible. It was a boundary that followed people, rather than the other way round.

How Jews Came to Be There

Most families had been there longer than memory could reach. They did not think of themselves as migrants, even though their ancestors once were. Jewish dispersal began in antiquity, with communities forming across the Mediterranean world after the Roman destruction of Judea. Over centuries, distinct centres emerged. In Central and Western Europe, Ashkenazi Jewish life took shape in places like northern Italy and the Rhineland before gradually moving eastward from the medieval period onward. Separately, Jewish life flourished in Iberia until the expulsions of the late fifteenth century pushed Sephardi communities mainly toward the Ottoman world and the Mediterranean.

In the lands of Poland–Lithuania, Ashkenazi Jews were invited as traders, estate managers, leaseholders, and craftsmen. They built towns, networks, and institutions that endured for generations.

The Invention of Containment

That world ended not with a single decree, but with the slow grinding of borders. When the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned at the end of the eighteenth century, millions of Jews suddenly found themselves subjects of a different kind of state. The Russian Empire inherited a Jewish population it had never intended to govern.

The solution was forced containment. Jews were not expelled en masse, but neither were they accepted as full subjects. Instead, they were restricted to a designated zone of residence – the Pale of Settlement – stretching across today’s Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and parts of Poland.

Life Inside the Pale

Life inside the Pale was dense, creative, and fragile. It was not a single way of life: religious courts and secular circles existed side by side; Hasidic devotion, rabbinic scholarship, and modernising currents often shared the same streets, if not the same assumptions. Some were shaped by the Jewish Enlightenment, drawn toward secular education, new languages, and the promise of civic belonging, even as the terms of that belonging remained uncertain.

Towns bustled with markets, workshops, religious schools, theatres, newspapers. Yiddish flourished as a living language. Political ideas travelled quickly. These institutions offered cohesion and continuity, but they existed at the pleasure of the state, and carried no authority beyond the community itself. But opportunity was narrow: many professions were barred, land ownership was rare, movement required permission, and universities imposed quotas, even as the population grew faster than the economy that confined it.

Pogroms and Conditional Existence

Tension followed predictably. When harvests failed or factories closed, Jews were easy to point to. They were visible, different, and legally vulnerable. But pogroms were not random explosions of ancient hatred, nor were they simply the work of uncontrollable mobs. They emerged from a specific political and social environment, one shaped by restriction, scapegoating, and state indifference.

The first large wave followed the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. Although Jews were not responsible, rumours spread quickly, and the authorities did little to stop what followed. Across the Pale, violence moved from town to town: homes looted, shops destroyed, synagogues desecrated, people beaten or killed. In many cases, police stood aside. In others, local officials quietly encouraged the unrest, seeing it as a way to redirect popular anger away from the state.

Violence as Policy by Other Means

What mattered was not only the violence itself, but the lesson it taught. Protection was conditional. Order could be suspended without warning. A family might live in the same place for generations and still discover, overnight, that their safety depended on forces entirely beyond their control. Pogroms were followed by inquiries, expressions of regret, and occasional punishment of perpetrators, but rarely by structural change. The system that made the violence possible remained intact.

A second wave, more brutal and more widely reported, came at the turn of the century, particularly in the years surrounding the 1905 Revolution. By now, the pattern was familiar. Economic stress, political unrest, and nationalist agitation combined with long-standing antisemitism. Newspapers and pamphlets fed the idea that Jews were an alien element within the empire, responsible for exploitation, disorder, or revolution itself. Violence was framed not as crime, but as reaction.

Afterwards, the message was unmistakable. Jews were permitted to live within the Pale, but they could not rely on the state to protect them. Existence was tolerated, not secured. For many, this realisation mattered more than any single act of brutality.

Violence, however, was only the most visible expression of a deeper contradiction. Even where streets were calm, the question of how – or whether – Jews could belong was being debated elsewhere, in offices, editorials, and policy papers.

Governing Without Belonging

By the late nineteenth century, European states had begun to speak openly of the “Jewish Question”. It was not a phrase confined to extremists, but one used in newspapers, policy debates, and administrative discussions. It did not yet imply extermination. It referred to something more bureaucratic and unresolved.

The problem was not that Jews existed, but that they existed in a way the state could not comfortably resolve. They were too numerous to ignore, too rooted to remove easily, and too restricted to assimilate fully. Within the Pale, this contradiction was managed through containment. Jews were allowed to live, but not to belong. Tolerated in theory, exposed in practice.

From Containment To Accusation

Over time, restriction hardened into suspicion. Jewish communities had long developed their own languages, institutions, and political life, not out of separatism, but necessity. That separateness was then cited as evidence that Jews could never integrate, completing a self‑fulfilling loop. The state helped create the condition it claimed to fear.

When violence erupted, it was often explained away as a response to economic stress or modernisation. But the underlying logic was already in place. Jews were a population that could be blamed without consequence and discussed as an abstract issue rather than as citizens.

Long before the phrase took on its darkest meaning, millions of Jews had already lived under its assumptions.

Bundists, Zionists, and Diverging Responses

For some, the answer was politics. Jewish socialists organised within the Pale, arguing that liberation would come through workers’ rights and revolution where they already lived.

This was the world of the Bund – rooted in Yiddish culture and convinced that safety lay in transforming society from within.

For others, the lesson was harsher. If life here was always provisional, then no reform could ever be enough. They turned an idea discussed in journals and salons into something urgent, practical, and emotional.

The pogroms did not create Zionism, but they sharpened it.

Leaving the Pale

Leaving became the quiet obsession of the late nineteenth century. Not everyone left at once, and not everyone left for the same reasons. Some followed work. Some followed relatives. Some fled after violence that made staying impossible. The destinations varied. America promised anonymity and wages. Palestine promised meaning and self‑direction, even if the land was poor and the work brutal. Both routes began the same way.

At dawn, carts rolled out of towns like the one described above. What could be carried was tied down. What could not was left behind. Children were told not to ask when they would return. Most never did. By the time the Pale formally disappeared during the upheavals of the First World War and the Russian Revolution, its population had already been profoundly affected by decades of migration and flight.

Its collapse did not bring safety. In many places, it brought worse.

What the Pale Left Behind

What remained was a demographic and psychological imprint. The Pale had concentrated Jewish life, shaped culture, and then expelled millions outward into the modern world. It explains why Jewish communities in New York, Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv, and London shared accents, habits, politics, and memories.

It also explains why modern arguments about power, refuge, and legitimacy so often talk past each other. The Pale was not ancient history. It was the antechamber to everything that followed.

Holocaust deniers love statistics – which is odd, given how often they struggle with basic arithmetic.

Scroll social media for long enough and you will eventually trip over a meme or comment claiming the Holocaust was exaggerated, pre‑planned, or never happened at all. These claims usually arrive dressed up with tables, screenshots, or impressive‑looking figures, supposedly proving a vast cover‑up.

Everyone likes the feeling of having spotted something others have missed. But before assuming these numbers expose some hidden truth, it helps to pause and ask a dull but essential question: what do these figures actually measure?

What denial hopes you will forget

Around six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. A further five to six million non‑Jews were also murdered by the Nazi regime and its collaborators, including Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, Polish civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, and others.

These figures are not controversial, not provisional, and not the subject of serious historical dispute. They are established by decades of independent research using German records, demographic studies, post‑war investigations, and survivor testimony.

And yet there are still people who insist that the mass murder of Jews is somehow up for debate. They circulate selective statistics, strip them of context, and present them as if they point to a hidden conspiracy rather than to the limits of the data being misused.

This is why the numbers in Holocaust denial circles often look convincing: because they are real. But there is always something missing. The deception is not usually in the number itself, but in what it is claimed to represent.

The trick is simple: take a narrow, incomplete dataset, relabel it as if it were a total, and rely on the reader not checking what has been excluded.

What follows looks at four common claims doing the rounds online. They sound convincing at a glance, yet fall apart the moment anyone slows down.

Claim 1: The Red Cross only reported 271,000 Jewish deaths

You may see figures attributed to the Red Cross – usually between 270,000 and 370,000 deaths – presented as if they represent the total number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

The truth

The Red Cross never conducted a census of Holocaust victims and never claimed to have calculated the total number of Jews murdered.

What the data actually shows

The figures being misused come from a partial set of death records for registered prisoners who died in Nazi camps. Some of these death certificates were issued by camp administrations during the war itself (for example, the Auschwitz death books), while others were later compiled from surviving German documentation after the war.

Crucially, these records only cover prisoners who were formally registered and whose deaths were administratively recorded. Even within individual camps, the records are incomplete, inconsistent, and in some cases deliberately destroyed.

By the early post-war years, a few hundred thousand such death records had been identified and collated. This figure reflects surviving administrative paperwork for registered camp deaths. It does not represent the total number of people murdered during the Holocaust.

What the Red Cross never had access to

By definition, this dataset excludes Jews murdered on arrival at extermination camps without registration, it excludes the victims of mass shootings in Eastern Europe. It does not include deaths from starvation and disease in ghettos. It does not include the victims of death marches – and it does not include killings where records were destroyed or never created

Presenting a partial archive of surviving paperwork as a total death toll is not historical accuracy. It is a deliberate misrepresentation designed to reach a predetermined conclusion.

Claim 2: Jewish population figures stayed roughly the same after the war

Another popular claim is that global Jewish population figures do not show a dramatic collapse after World War Two. Since some post‑war tables appear stable, or even show growth, deniers claim the Holocaust numbers cannot be true.

The truth

These comparisons rely on mismatched data: different geographies, different methods, and figures that were never intended to be read as a single continuous census.

Many post‑war population tables, including those in the World Almanac, relied heavily on pre‑war demographic data. In several editions, the figures reproduced after the war were still based on estimates from 1938 or earlier, simply carried forward because no reliable post‑war census data yet existed. This was not a secret or a plot, but a practical limitation.

Europe was devastated, borders had shifted, and millions of people were displaced or stateless. Accurate population data did not exist immediately after 1945, so earlier estimates were reused while censuses were rebuilt.

What the data actually shows

On the eve of the Second World War, the global Jewish population was roughly 16.5 to 17 million, with around 9.5 million Jews living in Europe.

By the end of the war, Europe’s Jewish population had fallen to roughly 3.5 to 4 million. Globally, the Jewish population stood at around 11 to 12 million. The missing six million are overwhelmingly European Jews.

Reliable figures only emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s, once borders stabilised and refugees were resettled. At the same time, Jewish populations in the Middle East and North Africa began to be counted more consistently, alongside migration to Britain, the Americas, and Israel.

Deniers mix European and global figures, pre‑war estimates and post‑war counts, then accuse historians of dishonesty for the confusion they themselves manufacture.

Claim 3: Auschwitz was said to have four million victims, then later revised to one million

Another frequently cited claim points to an old plaque at Auschwitz which stated that four million people were murdered there. Since the figure was later revised downwards, deniers present this as proof that Holocaust numbers were exaggerated.

The truth

The four million figure was a post‑war Soviet estimate, produced in the immediate aftermath of liberation when access to German records was limited and casualty figures across occupied territories were routinely inflated.

Although Western historians questioned it early on, the figure remained on official Auschwitz plaques throughout the Communist period and was only formally removed after the collapse of the Soviet bloc.

It was never the result of detailed historical research, nor was it universally accepted by Western historians.

What actually changed

As German documentation, transport records, and demographic studies became available, historians revised the Auschwitz death toll to around 1.1 million victims, the vast majority of them Jews.

The revision reflects improved evidence, not the exposure of a hoax. It shows how early post-war estimates were corrected as better data emerged.

Claim 4: “Six million Jews” was mentioned before the Holocaust, proving it was planned

You may also see claims that references to “six million Jews” before the Second World War prove the Holocaust was scripted in advance, as if the number were known ahead of time.

The truth

Before the war, a very large proportion of Europe’s Jews lived in Eastern Europe, particularly in areas that had once formed the Pale of Settlement under the Russian Empire. This population was already vulnerable, having endured decades of pogroms, upheaval following the First World War, and extreme instability after the Russian Revolution.

When newspapers, charities, or Jewish organisations referred to “six million Jews” at risk, they were talking about a population concentration under persistent threat, not a death toll. That did not mean Jews elsewhere were marginal or safe.

What the data actually tells us

Millions lived across the rest of Europe, in countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, and the Balkans – and Nazi policy targeted Jews wherever German power extended.

Headlines about “six million Jews” at risk referred to Eastern Europe; they did not predict the Holocaust, but later came to mirror its outcome. The fact that these figures align is coincidence, not foreknowledge.

The population existed first, and its destruction followed.

Deniers reverse cause and effect, they treat pre‑war demographic estimates as evidence of prior knowledge – to them it’s a conspiracy, a sign that it was all planned in advance.

Moving Forwards

Holocaust denial almost never talks about Roma, Poles, Soviet POWs, disabled people, or anyone else murdered by the Nazi regime. Not seriously, not consistently, and not in a way that actually disputes their deaths.

The obsession is overwhelmingly with Jewish victims.

Holocaust denial does not survive serious scrutiny, so it relies on speed, screenshots, and the hope that nobody will slow down long enough to check what they are actually being shown.

The next time a cropped table or dramatic statistic flashes past your screen, ask three simple questions:

• What exactly is being counted?

• What is missing from the count?

• Has the scope quietly changed between one figure and the next?

If the meme cannot answer those questions, it is not exposing a lie. It is selling one.

And if a claim falls apart the moment you ask how the number was produced, that is not a revelation. It is a warning sign.

Where antisemitism actually starts

Antisemitism is supposedly beyond the pale in modern political life. Everyone agrees it is abhorrent, everyone insists they oppose it, and every movement that brushes up against it rushes to clarify that Jews, as Jews, are not the problem.

Yet that consensus falls apart the moment Jewish people stop performing the right politics. In today’s protest culture, antisemitism is not rejected outright; it is managed, contextualised, and quietly redefined. It is condemned in the abstract, but negotiated in practice.

The result is a moral sorting process that few will admit to, but many recognise. Jews are welcome in progressive spaces provided they behave themselves: provided they disavow Zionism, provided they frame Jewish fear as secondary to other causes, provided they accept that abuse, intimidation, or even violence directed at Jewish targets may be unfortunate but understandable. This dynamic does not describe every progressive movement or every activist, but it is prevalent enough to shape norms, expectations, and silences.

Those who comply are held up as proof that antisemitism is not really a problem. Those who don’t are treated as agitators, bad actors, or extensions of a foreign state. This is not the language of hatred, but of permission.

What this article is not

This is not an argument about equivalence, scale, or intent. It is not a claim that contemporary protest movements are identical to the Nazi Policies of the 1930s, nor that criticism of Israel is antisemitic by default. Palestinian Arab suffering can be real. Israeli policy can be open to criticism.

None of that is in dispute.

The issue here is narrower and more uncomfortable: a recurring pattern in which Jewish acceptance is conditional, contingent on behaviour, politics, and usefulness. History does not need to repeat itself to rhyme. It only needs familiar moral shortcuts to reappear.

Conditional tolerance, historically

Long before antisemitism became openly violent, it often presented itself as a set of conditions. Jews were tolerated if they assimilated, if they stayed out of politics, if they disavowed other Jews, if they proved loyalty in times of crisis. Acceptance was always provisional. A change in circumstances tightened the terms.

Pre-war Europe did not begin with camps or laws stripping citizenship. It began with social sorting: which Jews were respectable, which were dangerous, which were useful, which were suspect. Collective punishment, economic pressure, and moral blame were justified not as hatred, but as necessity.

Jews were not targeted as individuals, but as a category.

Notably, this environment even produced Jews who believed that ideological alignment might secure acceptance; some supported early nationalist movements, including the Nazis, in the mistaken belief that it would draw a line between ‘good’ Jews and ‘bad’ ones.

That logic did not disappear with the end of the twentieth century. The form changes; the logic does not. It lies dormant, culturally available, ready to be repurposed whenever Jews are recast as a problem that needs managing.

Boycotts and collective punishment

One of the clearest contemporary expressions of this logic is the targeting of Jewish or Israeli-linked businesses. Protests framed as opposition to a state routinely land on shopfronts, restaurants, synagogues and cultural spaces thousands of miles from any battlefield. Customers are intimidated. Staff are harassed. Neighbourhood venues are transformed into symbolic stand-ins for a geopolitical conflict.

The justification is always political. The mechanism is always collective. Individuals are deemed legitimate targets not because of what they have done, but because of who they are assumed to represent. This is not about accountability; it is about proxy punishment. When Jews object, they are told the anger is understandable, the cause just, the collateral damage regrettable but unavoidable.

This is where historical comparison becomes instructive rather than inflammatory. The danger does not lie in boycotts per se, but in the moral move that renders ordinary Jews fair game for pressure because of an external grievance. That move has a history, and it rarely ends where it begins.

From tropes to permission

Alongside boycotts sits a familiar repertoire of imagery and accusation. Claims of unique cruelty, ritualised harm to children, poisoning, secret coordination, and sadistic intent circulate freely, often repackaged as satire or righteous anger.

These are not new ideas, nor are they accidental. They are emotionally efficient, instantly recognisable, and culturally primed.

When such tropes are challenged, the response is rarely to reject them outright. Instead, they are contextualised. Anger is cited. Trauma is invoked. Responsibility is displaced. The subtext is clear enough: this would be antisemitic if aimed at the wrong Jews.

Directed at the right ones, it becomes complicated.

This is how antisemitism survives without declaring itself. It does not need explicit hatred. It only needs enough people to decide that some Jews no longer count.

The ‘good Jew’ problem

Perhaps the most revealing feature of this landscape is the elevation of certain Jewish voices as moral proof. Anti-Zionist Jews are not merely included; they are amplified, showcased, and deployed as rebuttal. Their Jewishness becomes an argument in itself.

This is not because Jewish dissent is new or illegitimate. Jews have disagreed with one another for as long as there have been Jews. The difference is that only one kind of disagreement is now treated as admissible. Jewish identity is affirmed only insofar as it delegitimises other Jews.

A telling example is the way figures like Zack Polanski, the current leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, are invoked in debates about antisemitism and Israel. He matters here not as an individual case, but as a representative example of a broader dynamic that repeats across institutions and movements.

Polanski is Jewish, openly disavows Zionism, and yet comes from a Zionist family background. That combination makes him particularly useful. His presence is repeatedly cited as evidence that concerns about antisemitism are exaggerated, bad-faith, or politically motivated.

This is not a judgement on Polanski’s politics themselves. The issue is not his beliefs, but the work they are made to do. His Jewishness is affirmed precisely because it is oppositional. It functions as a permission slip: a way to dismiss Jewish discomfort, to neutralise communal alarm, and to reframe exclusion as moral clarity.

Symbolism and selective history

Polanski has spoken about changing his name to reflect his Polish Jewish roots. Many Jews have reshaped or reclaimed their names for personal reasons; there is nothing inherently suspect in that. But the symbolism is revealing. Eastern European Jewish history is inseparable from the conditions that produced Zionism: persecution, exclusion, and the failure of conditional tolerance.

The attempt to present Zionism as some alien graft onto Jewish history, rather than a response to it, requires a flattening of that past. It demands a clean break between acceptable Jewish identity and Jewish self-determination. History does not cooperate.

What this normalises

This is not about winning arguments online. It is about the social conditions being normalised. When antisemitism is condemned only when it targets the wrong Jews, when Jewish safety is treated as negotiable, and when acceptance depends on ideological compliance, something has already gone badly wrong.

A society does not need to hate Jews to endanger them. It only needs to decide which Jews are worth protecting.

Antisemitism, with conditions

The most dangerous forms of antisemitism are not always the loudest. Sometimes they speak the language of justice, solidarity, and moral urgency. They insist they are not antisemitic at all, because they have found Jews who agree.

Jews are welcome – provided they behave.

You’ve possibly seen it floating randomly into comment sections like a smug little perfume cloud. The noticing. The noticers. People are noticing.

It’s often written like a wink. Like you’re supposed to lean in and go, Ohh… right. I see.

But here’s the problem: half the people sharing it don’t even know what it means. The other half know exactly what it means and like that it stays vague.

So let’s translate it into normal human language.

What “the noticing” actually means

On the surface, “people are starting to notice” sounds harmless. Like:

• “People are noticing corruption.”

• “People are noticing hypocrisy.”

• “People are noticing patterns.”

That’s the bait.

But in the far-right and conspiracy-heavy corners of the internet, “the noticing” is a dog-whistle. It’s coded language for:

“People are waking up to the idea that Jews secretly control society.”

That’s the payload.

It’s not new, either. It’s a recycled version of older antisemitic conspiracy fantasies, including ideas popularised by The Protocols of the Elders of Zion – an antisemitic forgery that claimed Jews secretly control the world.

They rarely say “Jews” out loud, because the whole point is to avoid consequences. If challenged, they can do the coward’s shuffle:

• “I didn’t say Jews.”

• “You’re the one who brought Jews into it.”

• “I meant elites.”

• “I meant globalists.”

• “I meant bankers.”

Right. And I meant the tooth fairy.

“The noticing” is not a discovery. It’s a half-baked rebrand.

It’s the same ancient superstition dressed up as modern “pattern recognition”. It’s conspiracy with a smirk.

What are people supposed to be “noticing”, exactly?

This is where the mask slips.

In practice, “noticing” usually looks like this:

• a list of Jewish surnames in media companies

• screenshots of Jewish politicians or donors

• selective examples of Jewish people in high-status jobs

• dramatic insinuations about war, money, “lobbies”, and “influence”

It’s rarely careful, balanced, or honest. It’s cherry-picking, combined with a pre-decided conclusion.

Then it gets framed as if it’s forbidden knowledge. Like they’ve uncovered something you’re “not allowed to say”.

That feeling of being the brave truth-teller is the hook.

Noticing doesn’t require understanding anything. It doesn’t require reading history, economics, politics, or law.

It just requires one ingredient: a scapegoat.

What they never prove

The noticers want you to believe they’re doing analysis, when really they’re doing a party trick.

They “notice” that some Jewish people exist in influential industries and then leap straight to a conclusion they decided on beforehand.

But they never prove the part that matters.

They never prove:

• that individual success equals group control

• that presence equals coordination

• that a handful of prominent names equals a unified agenda

• that competing interests and messy politics magically disappear behind one invisible hand

Even if a group is overrepresented in a particular industry, that is not evidence of a secret conspiracy. It’s evidence of history, migration patterns, urban concentration, education, incentives, and ordinary human ambition.

And the real giveaway is how selective it all is.

If “noticing” was genuine curiosity, you’d see the same energy aimed at other obvious patterns too.

Like US dominance in social media and streaming. Or China’s dominance in manufacturing. Or Indian dominance in IT and engineering. Or Italian dominance in food culture. Or the way certain industries end up clustered in certain cities.

But those don’t come with a ready-made villain or a centuries-old hatred to plug into.

So they don’t ‘notice’ them.

Because this isn’t about understanding power.

It’s about blaming Jews for it.

Why it spreads so easily

There are three reasons this stuff spreads like mould:

1. It’s vague on purpose. It dodges moderation and it dodges accountability.

2. It flatters the audience. It makes people feel clever. Like they’re “awake” and everyone else is asleep.

3. It’s emotionally satisfying. If you’re angry, overwhelmed, or struggling, a conspiracy offers you something simple: a villain.

And there’s another reason people don’t like admitting:

4. It’s trolling.

Not everyone sharing this is a committed ideologue. A lot of them are just trying to be edgy, trying to get a reaction, trying to watch people lose their temper.

They want the thrill of being “forbidden” without the responsibility of saying anything clearly.

Real life is complicated. “The noticing” is not.

It’s one explanation for everything.

And when you have one explanation for everything, you never have to think again.

So yes… let’s do some noticing

Have you noticed it?

The bread delivery’s late?

Jews.

Your latte tastes slightly off?

Jews.

Your phone battery drops from 40% to 7% for no reason?

Jews.

The council collects the bins a day too late?

Jews.

You can’t get a doctor’s appointment until the next ice age?

Jews.

Your Deliveroo turns up cold, the chips are sweating and the driver looks like he hates you?

Your sock rotates inside your shoe and ruins your whole day?

Self-checkout says “unexpected item in bagging area” when the bagging area is literally empty?

Jews.

You’ve forgotten your password again, and now you’ve got to reset it with a verification code sent to a number you changed in 2013?

The weather app says “light drizzle” and you step outside into biblical rain?

Jews.

Your train is “delayed due to a previous delay”?

Jews.

You click “accept all cookies” for the thousandth time because the internet has been designed by sadists?

Jews.

Your headphones tangle themselves into a knot that defies the laws of physics?

Jews.

You open WhatsApp, see someone typing, get a little spike of hope, and then… nothing?

Jews.

Everything. Always. The same answer.

It’s almost impressive how quickly “noticing” becomes a universal solvent. It dissolves every problem down to one lazy conclusion.

And it’s convenient, isn’t it?

Because if you can blame one group for everything, you never have to understand anything.

What “the noticing” is really for

The noticing isn’t meant to be debated, it’s meant to be repeated.

It’s a meme. It’s recruitment.

It’s the online equivalent of someone sidling up to you in a pub and whispering, “I’m not racist, but…” and then watching your face to see if you’re one of them.

If you laugh, you’re in.

If you object, they act innocent.

It’s plausible deniability with a loaded gun behind it.

The boring truth they hate

Here’s what the noticers can’t stand:

Sometimes reality is boring. Sometimes a thing happens because:

• markets are messy

• governments are incompetent

• institutions are slow

• people are selfish

• systems are complex

• incentives matter

• history has consequences

Not because a single ethnic group is pulling invisible strings.

The point of scapegoating Jews isn’t accuracy.

It’s convenience.

It’s easier to blame an entire group than it is to take responsibility, tolerate uncertainty, or admit that life is messy and unfair.

So instead of dealing with the real causes of problems, they outsource their frustration to an imaginary puppet-master and call it ‘insight’.

Final point, because it matters

If someone genuinely wants to talk about power in society, fine. Let’s do it properly.

We can talk about:

• corporate lobbying

• state propaganda

• censorship

• media incentives

• class interests

• institutional capture

• foreign policy failures

But “the noticing” isn’t that.

It’s not analysis and it’s not courage.

It’s recycled bigotry, packaged as edgy wisdom for people who want the feeling of being right without the burden of being honest.

So yes.

People are “starting to notice”.

Not the truth.

Just how embarrassingly easy it is to sell the oldest hatred in the world to a new generation – so long as you wrap it in a joke and keep it vague enough to deny.

When people start talking prophecy, the tone can slide from curiosity into fixation, yet there’s a particular kind of conversation that always returns whenever the news turns dark.

A war breaks out, a new alliance forms, borders feel shakier than they used to, and technology tightens its grip on everyday life. Then, sooner or later, someone asks the question that sits just beneath the surface of all this uncertainty.

“Have you read what the Bible says about this?”

For some people, that question is comforting. It suggests history has a pattern, and the chaos has a destination. For others, especially those who don’t approach scripture religiously, it can sound about as grounded as reading tea leaves.

But maybe there’s a third way to look at it.

You don’t have to believe the Bible is predicting tomorrow’s headlines, and you don’t have to dismiss it as superstition either. You can treat it as a kind of ancient language bank that keeps resurfacing because human beings keep repeating the same behaviours.

Not “the Bible predicted this”, exactly, but something closer to: the Bible keeps describing the kinds of things we never really stop doing.

And when you read certain passages today, it’s hard not to pause for a moment and think, quietly, “hang on…”

What’s strange isn’t that people reach for these passages. What’s strange is how often the modern world seems to supply the props.

How the Story Is Usually Told

Before getting into the details, it’s worth laying out the popular modern version of this in plain language, the way it’s often explained in videos, sermons, and end-times threads. Even people who disagree on the specifics tend to recognise the same basic storyline.

In the last days, a hostile coalition forms against Israel, sometimes described as a Russia-and-Iran-led axis, with other regional powers pulled in. Israel is attacked in a sudden invasion, driven by ambition, opportunity, and the belief that Israel can be overwhelmed.

Some versions add a wider European role in the background, either as a participant, an enabler, or a self-interested bystander.

As the conflict spreads, the story introduces a central figure: the Beast, or the Antichrist. In this telling, the crisis is not only war and chaos, but also a tightening global order, where commerce and daily life become conditional. People speak of restriction and surveillance, of forced compliance, and of a system you can’t simply opt out of.

Finally, the whole thing escalates towards a climactic spiritual war often associated with Armageddon (Tel Megiddo), followed by judgement, and then some form of restoration or peace, often initiated by the coming (or return) of the messiah.

That’s roughly the storyline most people recognise.

Some readers take these passages quite literally as future prediction, not merely as pattern or metaphor, and it’s easy to see why the framework holds such a strong pull.

Whether it’s a clean reading of scripture or a modern mash-up of several passages is a separate question, but it’s the framework many believers have in their heads when they say “prophecy is unfolding”.

Ezekiel 38: The Invasion Template

The main place the modern prophecy conversation keeps returning to is Ezekiel 38–39.

This is the famous “Gog and Magog” war narrative, where Israel is invaded by a coalition. The invaders are drawn from named nations and regions, and the motive is described in blunt terms: plunder, spoil, a smash-and-grab on a national scale.

In one verse, a group of observers is described as questioning the invasion. Sheba and Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and its “young lions” (often taken to mean related powers or offspring nations) effectively ask:

Even if you don’t take the prophecy literally, it’s easy to see why this passage keeps being brought up. A coalition war directed at Israel, framed as opportunism, reads like geopolitics.

“Plunder” in the Modern World

When we hear the word “plunder” today, we don’t picture raiders dragging treasure across the sand. We picture something cleaner, more bureaucratic, and more plausible.

Oil fields, minerals, shipping routes, data, access, the ability to choke an economy or keep it alive.

That’s why it’s easy to see how people map Ezekiel’s language onto current affairs. In modern terms, plunder isn’t always a sack of gold. It can be control of resources, leverage over supply chains, or the ability to turn someone else’s prosperity into a bargaining chip.

The Awkward Fit: Israel as a Loot Target

And yet, this is the point where the Ezekiel mapping becomes both compelling and difficult.

The passage doesn’t describe Israel as merely strong. It describes Israel as secure, stable, the kind of place that looks safe and valuable. That’s an awkward fit for modern Israel.

Israel may be powerful, technologically advanced, and militarily capable, but it doesn’t have oil and isn’t a society that behaves as though it’s living in a safe neighbourhood. It behaves like a society that expects danger.

Either way, Ezekiel’s “secure and unsuspecting” atmosphere doesn’t obviously match the current state of affairs.

So interpreters do what humans always do when a story feels close but not quite perfect.

They adjust.

“Secure” becomes “secure because of military strength”, or secure because of alliances, or secure because enemies believe they can win quickly, or secure compared to what’s around it. With each adjustment, the prophecy remains usable.

This is where the line between reading and reshaping becomes blurry, not necessarily in a dishonest way, but in a very human way.

The Cast List Problem

Another reason these prophecy discussions never quite settle is that the cast list itself is debatable.

Some names have obvious historical continuity. Persia, for example, is easy for modern readers to connect with Iran. Other names are far more elastic and open to interpretation.

Tarshish, while largely unidentified, might be Turkey, Spain, a general trading power, or even Britain. And if Tarshish is loosely said to be Britain, the “young lions” are often interpreted as its offspring nations, usually meaning the United States and other Anglosphere countries.

That’s where the popular modern storyline tends to come from. Israel is invaded. Russia and Iran (and others) are involved. The West protests, hesitates, or warns, but doesn’t stop it.

It’s a neat framework and it snaps into place. At the same time, you can sometimes feel the interpretation working quite hard to stay current.

Again, that doesn’t mean it’s wrong, but it is worth noticing the mechanics.

Revelation: Power, Worship, and the Fear of Being Switched Off

If Ezekiel 38 is the invasion template, the New Testament’s Book of Revelation is the control template that leads to the final reckoning, and the modern world provides no shortage of material for it.

Revelation contains language that, to a modern ear, sounds like it’s describing the psychological atmosphere around unstoppable power. The famous line from Revelation 13 goes something like:

“Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him?”

Even without religion, it’s not hard to hear what that means. It speaks to awe, intimidation, resignation, and the feeling that resistance is pointless.

Every era has had its version of this: empires, kings, military machines. Today, depending on how you see the world, it can sound like superpowers, surveillance, central banks, multinational platforms, and algorithmic control. Not necessarily one man, and not necessarily one state, but a system that feels too big to fight.

The “Mark” and the Anxiety of Controlled Access

Then there’s the part everyone talks about: the mark of the beast, the idea that no one can buy or sell without it.

People map it onto digital ID, cashless systems, CBDCs, biometrics, social credit, and the general sense that your access to society can be restricted with a click.

You don’t have to conclude anything firm to feel the force of the imagery, because the modern anxiety it touches isn’t irrational. It’s simple, and it’s recognisably modern.

If your identity is digitised, it can be denied. If your money is programmable, it can be limited. If your access is conditional, it can be revoked.

One moment you’re a citizen. The next moment a screen says: access denied. That’s the core fear, and Revelation’s language, whether you believe it’s prophecy or not, captures it with uncomfortable precision.

Why This Never Goes Away

Without forcing today’s names into ancient text, it’s interesting why the pattern keeps reappearing, and why it keeps grabbing people.

Part of it is simple: it offers something human beings reach for when the world stops feeling predictable. A framework big enough to hold the chaos.

For some, that framework is history or ideology. For others it’s a sense of hidden forces and repeating patterns. And for many, it’s scripture, because it doesn’t just talk about events, it talks about motives: fear, pride, power, control, and the temptation to see ourselves as either victims or saviours.

In that sense, it isn’t necessarily foolish at all. It’s what people do when the ground shifts under their feet and they want reassurance that what they’re watching has shape, meaning, and an endpoint.

Mirror or Map

To put it in context, this habit isn’t new. During the Cold War, plenty of people were convinced the Soviet Union and the threat of nuclear war were sitting inside these passages too, and before that, other eras found their own enemies, their own beasts, and their own end-times timelines in the same pages.

The only gentle complication is that these texts can be applied to almost any era, which makes them feel permanently relevant but also difficult to pin down.

Every generation has had its own “Gog and Magog”. Every generation has had its unstoppable beast. Every generation has had a new mechanism for controlling commerce. And every generation has had its signs, warnings, and sense that this time it really might be the end of the story.

That doesn’t disprove anything, but it does suggest scripture often functions as a mirror as much as a map: people hold it up to their own time and find their reflection staring back.

So perhaps the power of these texts lies less in predictive accuracy and more in how clearly they articulate recurring human anxieties. The Bible may not be predicting the modern world like a coded newspaper, but describing human behaviour so accurately that every era recognises itself inside it.

When the world starts to feel unstable, those old words can begin to sound less like poetry and more like a warning. For some people that’s unsettling. For others, it’s strangely reassuring.

The parallels really can be uncanny.

And even if it’s only a mirror, it’s a strange one, because it still reflects us far too clearly.

An uprising driven by economic collapse

A wave of unrest is unfolding in Iran right now, in real time, on streets that have seen this cycle before and know exactly how it ends when the regime prevails.

It did not begin with ideology, foreign policy or proxy wars – not this time. This time it began with money, or rather, the absence of it.

The Iranian rial is collapsing to historic lows. Inflation is tearing through daily life. Food prices, rent and fuel costs are spiralling beyond reach for ordinary families. In late December, shopkeepers in Tehran’s bazaars began closing their shutters in protest. That alone should have set off alarms; when bazaars shut, it rarely sticks to being just about economics.

From economic anger to political rejection

From there, the unrest spreads quickly. Students join in. Workers walk out. Protests flare across multiple provinces. And, as has happened so many times before, economic anger bleeds almost immediately into political rage. Chants move from complaints about prices to open rejection of clerical rule. Iranians are not asking politely for reform. They are rejecting the system outright.

This is not abstract dissent. Protesters are filmed lighting cigarettes with images of the Supreme Leader. Pictures meant to inspire fear are treated as disposable props. It is a small gesture, but a telling one: contempt replacing terror.

Everyone involved knows the cost. They know what happened during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising. They remember the beatings, the bullets, the disappearances. They remember the executions carried out once the cameras moved on – and they are out there anyway.

The cost of defiance

The regime’s response is already familiar. Internet blackouts, mass arrests, live ammunition and families warned not to hold funerals. The state does what it always does when consent collapses: it rules by fear, and it does so openly.

Coverage without urgency

While articles appear and clips circulate, there is no strong focus, no front‑page urgency, no rolling coverage that frames this as a defining moral story of the moment. No breathless studio panels or daily moral outrage. No viral explainer threads about courage, resistance or women’s rights – and no mass marches calling for a free Iran!

For a movement driven in large part by women, students and workers – precisely the groups Western media claims to champion – the attention is strikingly thin.

Why?

Why this story does not fit

Part of the answer is uncomfortable. Iran’s protesters do not fit the ideological templates many outlets rely on; they are not fighting capitalism in a way that flatters Western guilt. They are not resisting ‘colonialism’ as framed by activist shorthand.

They are explicitly rejecting an Islamic theocracy.

Feminism becomes awkward when women burn hijabs, not as a symbol of Western liberation, but as a rejection of religious authority itself.

And then there is the blunt reality this series keeps returning to.

There are no Jews in this story.

No Israel to blame. No Zionist framing to graft onto events. No familiar villain that allows outrage to be safely expressed without upsetting existing political coalitions. Once again, where Jews are absent, attention quietly evaporates.

Iran the threat, not Iran the people

That thin, fleeting attention is all the more revealing given how loudly Iran features elsewhere in the news cycle.

When Israel strikes Iranian nuclear infrastructure, headlines are instant and global. When the United States threatens military action should Iran rebuild its nuclear or missile programmes, analysis pages fill overnight. When Iranian proxies fire rockets, the world watches closely. Iran, as an abstract strategic threat, is endlessly fascinating.

Iranians, as people, much less so.

A regime under real strain

Recent geopolitics sharpen the contradiction further. The United States’ move against Venezuela was not aimed at Iran, nor conceived with Tehran as its primary target. But dismantling a corrupt regime long sustained through opaque oil and financial arrangements has a knock-on effect: it tightens the net around Tehran. Iran’s economy depends on sanctions‑dodging networks, discounted oil deals and friendly authoritarian partners. When one strand frays, the pressure elsewhere increases.

Add to that Israel’s ongoing effort to degrade Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and the picture becomes clear: a regime under genuine strain. Economically cornered. Geopolitically squeezed. Increasingly unable to buy domestic calm through subsidies and repression alone.

This is precisely the moment when uprisings become dangerous for authoritarian systems.

Which makes the limited attention all the more telling.

Selective outrage

Western media does not ignore Iran because it is too complex, or because information is hard to verify. It ignores Iran because the story is politically inconvenient., because it disrupts favoured narratives and exposes a blind spot: outrage that is conditional, selective and often performative.

Iranian protesters are not asking for Western saviours. They are asking not to be erased.

But erasure is exactly what happens when suffering does not align with fashionable causes.

Right now, a population is rising against a brutal regime. Right now, the response is repression. And right now, the imbalance in attention speaks louder than the chants echoing through Iran’s streets.

No Jews. No news.

Israel’s settlement policy rarely disappears from the headlines, but since October 7, 2023, it has returned with force. New settlements have been approved, existing ones expanded, and long‑stalled plans accelerated.

International reactions have been swift and familiar: condemnation, warnings about illegality, and claims that Israel is deliberately sabotaging peace.

What much of this coverage misses is motive. Settlement expansion is usually framed as ideological obstinacy or political extremism, rather than as a response to a changed strategic environment. To understand why expansion is accelerating rather than slowing, it helps to start with the present and work backwards.

The Assumption Everyone Starts With

Most commentary begins from the same premise: that settlements are clearly illegal, clearly forbidden, and clearly in breach of binding agreements. From there, everything Israel does looks like provocation.

The problem is that this premise quietly merges two different arguments into one.

International Law Versus Signed Agreements

Under international law, most international bodies regard the West Bank as occupied territory. On that basis, they argue that the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits an occupying power from transferring its civilian population into occupied land. The United Nations and the International Court of Justice have repeatedly stated that Israeli settlements have no legal validity under this framework.

Israel disagrees with this interpretation. It argues that the West Bank is disputed rather than occupied, that no recognised sovereign existed there prior to 1967, that no forced transfer of population has occurred, and that the convention was never intended to apply to territories of this kind.

Whether one accepts that argument or not, it explains why condemnation has never translated into enforcement.

What is often omitted is that none of this comes from the agreements Israel and the Palestinians actually signed with each other.

The Oslo Accords

Signed in the 1990s as interim agreements, the Oslo Accords were not a final peace settlement but a holding framework, designed to reduce violence and create space for negotiations over borders, sovereignty, and statehood.

They emerged from pressure rather than optimism: the First Intifada, economic strain, diplomatic isolation, and a growing recognition on all sides that the status quo was unsustainable. Both Israel and the PLO needed a way out of perpetual confrontation without conceding core claims upfront.

Oslo provided mutual recognition, limited Palestinian self‑rule, and a deliberately vague promise that the hardest questions would be resolved later.

Crucially, it did not ban settlements, freeze construction, or rule on their legality. Instead, settlements were classified as a final‑status issue, alongside Jerusalem, refugees, and borders. However, this was not endorsement, it was postponement.

How Oslo Redrew Control Without Drawing Borders

Rather than settling sovereignty, Oslo reorganised authority on the ground. The West Bank was divided into three administrative zones.

• Area A came under full Palestinian civil and security control, mainly covering large cities.

• Area B gave Palestinians civil authority while Israel retained security responsibility.

• Area C, roughly sixty per cent of the West Bank, remained under full Israeli civil and security control.

Area C includes Israeli settlements, strategic road networks, military zones, and most undeveloped land. Its final status was left unresolved, to be decided in future negotiations that never came.

Why Area C Became the Pressure Valve

Area C was always the hinge on which the process turned. Palestinians could live there, but Israel retained control over planning and construction. Permits were difficult to obtain, development was constrained, and frustration accumulated.

For Palestinians, Area C came to symbolise Oslo’s failure to deliver meaningful sovereignty. For Israel, it remained both a security buffer and a negotiating asset.

What was meant to be temporary hardened into default reality.

The Jewish Blind Spot

The irony at the heart of the settlement debate is rarely acknowledged. While intense focus is placed on Jewish settlement in Area C, far less attention is given to the fact that Jews cannot safely live in, or even freely enter, Areas A and B.

Under the Oslo framework, Areas A and B are under Palestinian civil control and are, in practice, off‑limits to Jews. Israeli law restricts entry to Area A due to security risks, but the practical effect is exclusion, and Jewish residence in these areas is not tolerated.

Often described as a temporary security measure, prohibition is a preview of what a sovereign Palestinian state would likely entail in practice: territory from which Jews are barred.

The historical echo is striking. A future in which Jews are barred from Judea and Samaria is treated as normal, even progressive, while Jewish presence elsewhere is framed as uniquely illegitimate.

This asymmetry is rarely confronted. It also overlooks the historical precedent: during Jordan’s occupation of the West Bank, Jews were expelled and barred from returning – a reality rarely acknowledged in today’s debates.

Why Oslo Failed

The assumption that interim autonomy would naturally lead to trust and final agreement proved wrong. Violence by extremists eroded trust almost immediately and political opposition hardened.

The assassination of Israel’s prime minister in 1995, by an internal opponent of Oslo, removed its strongest Israeli backer.

Final‑status talks stalled repeatedly. At Camp David in 2000 and in subsequent negotiations, Israel pushed for a comprehensive final agreement, while Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ultimately rejected the proposals on the table without offering a counter‑agreement.

After that point, the Oslo process effectively collapsed – not the interim system itself, but the transition to final Palestinian sovereignty. The structures created under Oslo – the Palestinian Authority and the Area A, B, and C divisions – were never formally dismantled.

By the early 2000s, Oslo was politically dead, even though its framework remained in place.

October 7 and the End of an Illusion

For many Israelis, October 7, 2023 marked the final collapse of a belief that territorial withdrawal necessarily leads to security. The experience of Gaza loomed large: Israel had withdrawn unilaterally, dismantled the settlements, and exited the territory, only to see Hamas take control, militarise, and ultimately carry out mass violence.

October 7 ended the illusion that withdrawal alone guarantees peace. In Israeli political thinking, it hardened a conclusion that concessions without enforceable security arrangements create vulnerability, not stability.

For Israeli policymakers, this reinforced the belief that territorial control in strategically sensitive areas – especially Area C – is not optional but foundational to national security.

What Is Driving Settlement Expansion Now

Settlement expansion has accelerated not in a vacuum, but in response to a changing political and security landscape.

In parallel with the Gaza war, Western governments and international bodies have increasingly signalled support for recognising a Palestinian state outside the framework of direct negotiations with Israel. From the Israeli perspective, this represents a strategic threat: statehood being conferred externally, without binding security guarantees.

Geography, Security, and Pre‑emption

Within the Knesset and the security establishment, the fear is that unilateral recognition would create a hostile state overlooking Israel’s main population centres and critical infrastructure, without the leverage Oslo was meant to preserve. From parts of the West Bank, Israel’s coastal plain, Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Airport all sit within a few kilometres of the Green Line.

Against that backdrop, settlement expansion in Area C is seen not only as ideological, but as necessary and preventative. By entrenching Israeli civilian and infrastructural presence, Israel makes externally imposed statehood harder to implement in practice.

Whether one agrees with this approach or not, it reflects a defensive logic shaped by recent experience rather than abstract ideology.

Oslo’s Unfinished Legacy

Despite its failure, Oslo still structures reality. Areas A, B, and C remain. Israel controls Area C by default. The Palestinian Authority governs limited territory without sovereignty.

Settlement expansion today takes place inside this unresolved framework. Oslo neither authorised it nor prohibited it. It postponed the question and assumed a future agreement would resolve it.

That agreement never came; once final‑status talks collapsed, the interim system froze in place – including the administrative permissiveness around settlements that Oslo had intentionally left unresolved.

Why the Argument Never Ends

When settlement expansion dominates the news, it is often discussed as if Oslo never existed, or as if it clearly outlawed what is happening today. In reality, Oslo explains why the issue remains legally ambiguous, politically explosive, and endlessly recycled.

Settlement expansion is condemned internationally, disputed legally, and permitted administratively under an interim agreement that was never meant to last three decades.

That is the real legacy of Oslo: not peace, but rejectionism and permanent postponement. Trust collapsed, leadership changed, violence intervened, and there was no mechanism to force a final agreement.

No amount of political posturing has made the settlements illegal; repeating the claim does not make it true.

The word “Palestine” is often used today as if it refers to an ancient, continuous country with fixed borders and a single people stretching back thousands of years. But when we follow the name through history, a much messier picture appears.

This article is not about modern politics. It is about the name itself: where it comes from, who used it, what it referred to at different times, and how its meaning changed.

In doing so, it traces the historical uses of the name “Palestine” to show that it has never referred to a single, continuous, self‑governing nation‑state in antiquity, but rather to shifting geographical and administrative labels applied largely by external powers.

Peleset: a people, not a country

The earliest root of the word “Palestine” is usually traced to Peleset, a name found in Egyptian inscriptions from the late Bronze Age, around the 12th century BCE.

Peleset refers to a people, not a land.

They are widely identified with the Philistines known from the Hebrew Bible. Archaeology and Egyptian reliefs place them along a narrow stretch of the southern Levantine coast, centred on cities such as Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath.

This area later became known as Philistia.

The key point is geographical limitation. The Philistines were a coastal people. They did not inhabit the Judean highlands. They were not Israelites. And there is no evidence that Peleset ever referred to an inland kingdom or a broader region.

The name that eventually becomes “Palestine” begins here, but only as an ethnonym tied to a specific coastal population.

Once the Philistines disappear as a distinct people, the name does not continue as a lived or self‑chosen identity. From this point onward, it is applied by outsiders rather than by the inhabitants of the land themselves.

From Philistia to Greek geography

By the time Greek writers appear on the scene centuries later, the Philistines as a distinct people had largely disappeared.

However, their name survived.

Greek authors adopted versions of Philistia and repurposed them as geographical labels. One of the earliest and most important examples comes from the 5th century BCE historian Herodotus, who refers to a region he calls Syriē hē Palaistínē (usually translated as “Palestinian Syria”).

Herodotus does not define this region clearly. What we can say from the passages where it appears is that:

• it lies between Egypt and Phoenicia

• it functions as a travel corridor

• it is largely coastal in emphasis

• it is not described as a state or nation

Importantly, Herodotus also names Judea, Phoenicia, and other Levantine regions separately elsewhere. “Palestine” is not presented as a replacement for them.

At this stage, the name has already drifted. It no longer refers to the Philistines as a people, but it has not yet become a defined territorial unit either.

What matters is who is using the term. Greek writers apply it from the outside. The populations living in the region do not adopt it as a name for themselves.

Palestine in the Zenon papyri

The most concrete early evidence for the term comes from the Zenon papyri, a collection of Greek administrative documents from the 3rd century BCE, during the Ptolemaic period. For example, papyri such as P. Cairo Zenon 59004 use “Palestine” as a regional descriptor in travel and estate administration.

In these texts, “Palestine” appears as a practical regional label used by Egyptian officials. It covers places such as:

• Gaza

• Jaffa (Joppa)

• Ptolemais (Acre)

• surrounding coastal plain and adjacent lowlands

This shows “Palestine” being used bureaucratically, much like other Hellenistic regional names. It is a term of convenience, not identity.

Crucially, Jewish sources from antiquity – such as the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and later Jewish writers writing in Greek, including Josephus, as well as rabbinic literature – do not use this term and refer instead to Israel, Judah, Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.

These names remain in continuous use in Jewish texts, administration, and self‑understanding right up until the Roman destruction of Jerusalem.

“Palestine” is an external label applied by administrators, not a name used by the inhabitants themselves.

What “Palestine” is not, before Rome

Before the Roman period, several things are consistently true.

“Palestine” is not:

• a kingdom

• a sovereign state

• a nation

• an ethnic identity

Instead, it is:

• a Greek-derived geographical term

• loosely defined

• often coastal in focus

• used from the outside

It is never used as a self‑designation by any known population in the region and at no point does it replace Israel, Judah, or Judea in Jewish self‑understanding. Those names remain continuous in Jewish texts, administration, coinage, and religious tradition, right up to the sacking of Jerusalem and the suppression of Jewish autonomy by Rome.

How Palestine expanded

The major transformation of the name happens under Roman rule.

After the Jewish uprising known as the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–135 CE), Rome crushed Jewish political autonomy in Judea. As part of the aftermath, the province of Judaea was merged into a larger administrative unit and renamed Syria Palaestina.

This was not a neutral act.

The name was deliberately chosen. It drew on the old Philistine-derived label and applied it far beyond its earlier meanings. Judea, Samaria, and surrounding areas were now folded into a single Roman province carrying the name “Palestina”.

At the same time:

• Jerusalem was refounded as a Roman city

• Jews were barred from entering it

• Jewish political structures were dismantled

From this point onward, “Palestine” expands dramatically. What had once been a loose coastal label is now stretched to cover most of the southern Levant.

This is the moment when the name becomes geographically expanded, not through ancient continuity, but through imperial punishment and administrative reshaping.

After Rome

Once embedded in Roman administration, the name persists.

Byzantine, Christian, and later Islamic rulers inherit it as a provincial term. Medieval maps and texts continue to use “Palestine”, but almost always as a region defined by earlier empires, not as a self-governing nation.

The name survives because empires are good at preserving paperwork.

Some late antique Christian writers living in the region also use “Palestine” as a regional term, but this reflects inherited Roman provincial language rather than a local ethnic or national self‑identification.

Palestine under the early caliphates

When Arab Muslim rule replaced Byzantine authority in the 7th century, the name did not suddenly expand to cover the whole Levant.

Under the early caliphates, the region known as Jund Filastin (the military district of Palestine) was a small administrative area, largely coastal and southern in scope.

Early Islamic geographers such as al‑Baladhuri and al‑Ya‘qubi describe Filastin as one district among several in Bilad al‑Sham (Greater Syria), reinforcing its administrative – not national – character.”

Its main centres included:

• Ramla (its capital)

• Jaffa

• Gaza

• Lydda

It did not include Galilee, which belonged to Jund al-Urdunn (Jordan), nor Damascus, which was part of Jund Dimashq. Jerusalem sometimes shifted administratively, but the caliphal “Palestine” district remained limited in size.

In other words, early Islamic usage preserved a narrower, inherited understanding of Palestine rather than a maximal one. It functioned as one district among several in greater Syria, not as a name for the entire region.

This matters because it shows that even after Rome, the name did not automatically mean “all the land between the river and the sea”. Its scope remained contingent, administrative, and externally defined.

A name without a nation

None of this denies modern identities or political claims. It simply places the word “Palestine” back into its historical context.

The name exists. But its meaning shifts.

It begins as the name of a coastal people, becomes a Greek geographical shorthand, is adopted as an administrative label, and is finally expanded by Roman decree.

History does not show an ancient, continuous country called Palestine stretching unchanged through time.

What it shows instead is a name that outlived its original people, outgrew its original geography, and was repeatedly reshaped by outside powers.

The modern political meaning of “Palestine” is significant, but it is not ancient. The ancient uses of the name were discontinuous, externally applied, and geographically inconsistent.

That complexity matters, especially when the past is used to argue about the present.

Apparently this still needs explaining, which is impressive given that we’ve had roughly two thousand years to get our heads around it.

Despite this, some people remain determined to insist that Jesus was a “Palestinian”.

He wasn’t.

A Brief Lesson in Chronology

While we know little about the historical Jesus, we do know that he lived in the early first century CE. He grew up in Galilee, travelled through Judea and Samaria, and worshipped in Jerusalem.

All of these places were under Roman control, but they were distinct regions, known by those names at the time.

None of them were called “Palestine”, and nobody living there thought of themselves as “Palestinian”, because that identity quite literally did not exist.

There was no Palestinian people, no Palestinian nation, and no Palestinian ethnicity in the first century. None. Zero. Not hiding in the footnotes. Not waiting to be rediscovered.

When the Name Appeared

The name Syria Palaestina only appears after 135 CE, following the Bar Kokhba revolt, when Rome deliberately renamed the province as a punitive gesture, dropping ‘Judea’ and extending the name of a coastal region historically associated with the Philistines, Israel’s ancient enemies.

This happened more than a century after Jesus had been executed.

Even then, it was an administrative label imposed by an empire, not the name of a people or a national identity.

The modern Palestinian national identity emerged in the twentieth century, during the British Mandate period, and largely in response to Jewish migration and competing national claims. Retroactively assigning a modern political identity to a first-century Jew is not historical insight. It is political ventriloquism.

This is what historians call an anachronism. Everyone else calls it making things up.

Who Jesus Was

On the question of who Jesus actually was, there is no serious debate at all, no matter how much some people wish there were.

Every credible source agrees on the fundamentals. Jesus was Jewish. He came from a Jewish family. He was raised under Jewish law. He worshipped at the Jerusalem Temple. He taught from Hebrew scripture. His followers called him “Rabbi”. He was executed by Rome with the banner proclaiming him “King of the Jews”.

Jesus the Refugee?

Then comes another claim, usually delivered with a grave expression and a great deal of moral theatre: Jesus was a “refugee”.

Once again, no – at least not in the way we understand it today.

This idea rests on the Gospel account of a temporary stay in Egypt when Jesus was an infant. But Judea and Egypt were both under the same Roman authority. There were no modern borders, no asylum systems, and no permanent displacement. The family left, waited out a perceived threat, and according to scripture returned to the ‘Land of Israel’ – still not Palestine.

That is not refugee status. It is a short‑term move within a single empire.

Calling Jesus a refugee relies entirely on modern legal and political definitions that did not exist in the first century. This is political branding, not history.

Why this Nonsense Persists

Because “Palestinian refugee Jesus” works as a slogan. It is emotionally useful. It allows people to project modern political narratives backwards in time and dress them up as ancient truth.

For some people it seems that accuracy is optional, but slogans are not facts.

The facts are straightforward. Jesus was a Jew from Judea and Galilee, living under Roman occupation, long before the word “Palestinian” referred to a people, and without being permanently displaced from his home.

The idea behind the claim is always the same: that DNA represents a kind of hidden truth, a final gotcha revelation, and that Israel panicked when it realised genetics was about to expose some secret origin story that would unravel the entire project. A revolutionary truth, just one swab away.

The only problem is that none of it is true.

Not Netanyahu.
And not the idea that Israel somehow ran scared from genetics.

The boring reality

Let’s start with the dull, unromantic reality – because the myth relies on people not checking it.

In 2000, Israel passed the Genetic Information Law. It did not ban DNA testing. It did not prohibit ancestry research. It did not outlaw population genetics. To be clear: ordering a consumer DNA kit from abroad does not result in some dramatic interception at the border.

What does happen, and where confusion often creeps in, is that some major DNA testing companies choose not to sell, ship to, or fully support users in Israel at all.
