The mainstream media never forgave him for it.

A new compilation of his old interview clips is ripping through YouTube right now, and it’s exposing something that should make every honest person furious. This wasn’t sloppy journalism. This was decades of deliberate distortion aimed at one of the sharpest economists this country has ever produced.

Start with his 1981 appearance on Meet the Press. The host tells him, with total confidence, that black Americans are terrified of Reagan’s budget cuts and that all their progress came from government programs. Sowell doesn’t raise his voice. He doesn’t need to. He simply points out that under affirmative action, Puerto Rican income fell from 60 percent of the national average to 50 percent, Mexican-American income dropped from 76 percent to 73 percent, and black income barely moved at all. Repetition is not a substitute for facts, he tells the host flatly.

That line should be printed on a poster in every newsroom in America.

The Minimum Wage Truth Nobody Wanted

Then there’s the segment on black teenage unemployment, and this one still applies today word for word. Sowell walks through it patiently. You cannot raise someone’s salary by passing a law. All a minimum wage hike does is set a floor. If an employer won’t pay it, the worker doesn’t get a raise. He gets nothing. Zero.

He had the data going back to 1950 to prove it. Black teen unemployment was a fraction of what it became once minimum wage laws expanded their reach and the wage floor kept climbing. The press had access to those same numbers.

Why didn’t that story ever run?

Paid subscribers get access to the full archive and early releases. Right now, new annual subscribers can lock in 25 percent off their first year.

Get 25% off for 1 year

Now get to the ugliest part of the whole reel. CBS Morning News once implied Sowell personally believed in the genetic inferiority of black Americans. This is a man who spent over a decade publicly demolishing that exact theory in books, essays, and lectures, so thoroughly that British television tried to arrange a formal debate between him and Arthur Jensen specifically because his position was so well documented. London understood him. Washington somehow couldn’t figure it out. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a media class that found the truth inconvenient.

Why He Walked Away From Interviews

Sowell eventually explained why he mostly stopped talking to reporters altogether. His reasoning was simple and brutal. There was no correlation between what he actually said and what ended up printed.

None.

Victor Davis Hanson’s recent tribute puts the scale of it in perspective. Across nearly a century of scholarly life, it’s hard to find anyone in the intellectual world treated as unfairly as Sowell was. And yet he never once published a rebuttal complaining about it. His answer to decades of ridicule was to simply keep producing, book after book, more than 40 of them, until the sheer volume of his work made the smears look as small as they actually were.

Every conservative who’s ever been tempted to spend an afternoon arguing with strangers online instead of doing real work should sit with that for a second.

Here’s the part that should genuinely unsettle the people who spent forty years trying to bury him. Coleman Hughes now teaches a course at the University of Austin, and he’s watched eighteen-year-old students with zero institutional loyalty to Sowell come alive reading his essay on the real history of slavery. They’re not finding him through university reading lists. They’re finding him through clips exactly like this one, cut and shared by people who owe the legacy media nothing.

The algorithm figured out what the editorial boards never could. He was right the whole time.

Sowell’s entire body of work rests on one unglamorous, radical habit. Go back to the original source. Check the numbers yourself. Don’t take the anointed class’s word for it. It sounds obvious. Somehow it wasn’t, for an entire generation of journalists who preferred a clean story about race and government dependency over an inconvenient set of statistics that told a different one.

The press spent half a century trying to convince the country that Thomas Sowell was dangerous. They should have spent less time on the smears and more time worrying about what happens when people finally stop believing them.

Like, share, and comment to help this Thomas Sowell Substack grow.

Upgrade your subscription so you and others can read more great content.

Get 25% off for 1 year

Thomas Sowell Looked at the Inequality Statistics and Found 29 Million People Nobody Was Counting. They have cable television. Multiple TV sets. Air conditioning. Sowell noted with characteristic precision that he himself did not have air conditioning until he was well into his 40s and even then it was only a window unit.

The standard of living for the poorest Americans has risen dramatically even as the inequality statistics have grown more alarming. Those two facts coexist. The people who shout loudest about inequality choose to emphasize one and ignore the other because one generates the political result they want.

Then Sowell dropped the number that makes the entire household income comparison argument collapse.

There are literally 29 million more people in the top 20% of households than in the bottom 20%. The number of households in each category is the same. But the number of people varies by 29 million. More than the combined population of New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

When you compare the income of the top quintile of households to the bottom quintile of households without accounting for the fact that the top quintile households have dramatically more people in them, you are not measuring inequality. You are measuring household size and calling it oppression.

The media never corrects this. The politicians never correct it. Because correcting it would eliminate the argument for government intervention that the statistic was constructed to support.

Thomas Sowell has been saying this for decades. Trump has spent two terms doing exactly what Sowell’s framework prescribes. Less government. Fewer unnecessary bureaucrats. More accountability. Deregulation rather than the endless expansion of rules that drive up housing costs, strangle small businesses, and force lenders to make loans to people who cannot pay them back.

The housing crisis that California politicians blame on deregulation was in fact caused by too much regulation in the wrong direction. Forcing lenders to extend credit to unqualified borrowers while simultaneously zoning vast swaths of land as off-limits to construction. The government created the problem. Then blamed the market. Then used the problem it created to justify more government.

Sowell saw it. Said it. Was ignored for years.

Trump is governing according to the principles Sowell spent his career establishing. Less government manufactures fewer mirages. The data after 15 months of Trump’s second term is starting to show what that looks like in practice.

This newsletter applies Sowell’s frameworks to what is happening right now. 25% off because the ideas that explain everything are more relevant today than they have ever been.

Upgrade your subscription today.
<p class="button-wrapper" That is precisely the point. What they share is a recognition that Thomas Sowell’s ideas are worth grappling with seriously regardless of where you land on them.

The Hoover Institution described his legacy in terms that capture something essential about why Sowell endures when so many public intellectuals fade. His legacy is not simply the body of work he produced but the example he set as a scholar who pursued truth wherever it led. Throughout his remarkable career he challenged assumptions, resisted intellectual conformity, and insisted that ideas be judged by evidence rather than ideology.

That last phrase is worth sitting with. Ideas judged by evidence rather than ideology. In an era where the opposite is increasingly the norm, where conclusions come first and evidence is arranged around them, Sowell’s method is almost radical in its simplicity.

He grew up in poverty in Harlem. He joined the Marine Corps. He studied under Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago after Harvard and Columbia. He spent more than six decades writing over 45 books that made complex economic and social ideas accessible to anyone willing to read them. He was largely ignored by the mainstream media and largely vindicated by history.

The Hoover Institution is now convening some of the greatest minds of this generation to say so publicly.

This newsletter is not the Hoover Institution. We are an independent fan publication covering Sowell’s ideas and applying them to current events for readers who want the substance without the academic packaging. If the Hoover Institution is the museum, consider this the neighborhood conversation about why the paintings matter.

And right now we are making that conversation more accessible than ever.

25% off paid subscriptions. Watch it and you will understand exactly why the left spent sixty years trying to make sure nobody heard what this man had to say.

Sowell Says the Quiet Part Out Loud

The core of Sowell’s argument, laid out in his recent book Social Justice Fallacies, is brutally simple. Dr. King’s message was equal opportunity for individuals regardless of race. In the years that followed, the goal changed to equal outcomes for groups. That one sentence is the entire scam, exposed in nineteen words.

Sowell does not stop at theory. He goes after the sacred cow of “systemic racism” with numbers the DEI industry hopes you never see. Median black family income has been lower than median white family income for generations. But the median per capita income of Asian groups is more than fifteen thousand dollars a year higher than the median per capita income of white Americans. Is this the white supremacy we’re so often warned about, he asks. For more than a quarter of a century, in no year has the annual poverty rate of black married couple families been as high as ten percent, and in no year has the poverty rate of Americans as a whole been as low as ten percent. If black poverty is caused by systemic racism, do racists make an exception for blacks who are married.

Sit with that for a second. An entire multi-billion dollar diversity industry built on a narrative that collapses the moment you check the marriage certificate data.

Get 25% off for 1 year

The Immigrant Playbook, Recycled

Here is the part that should make every progressive squirm. Sowell traces today’s “equity” obsession straight back to the eugenicists of the early twentieth century. In addressing the massive increase in immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe, progressives claimed that these new immigrants were inherently, genetically, and therefore permanently inferior. Same intellectual movement, same smug certainty, different target group.

And when the data blew that theory up, Sowell notes, it blew up hard. Jews who had scored low on the 1917 Army Mental Test began to score above the national average on various tests as they became a more English-speaking group. A study showed that black orphans raised by white families had significantly higher average IQs than other black children. The “genetic determinism” crowd was not just wrong. They were catastrophically, provably, humiliatingly wrong, and it still took decades for the establishment to admit it.

Sowell has a line for exactly this kind of failure, and it belongs on a plaque outside every Ivy League sociology department: stupid people can create problems, but it often takes brilliant people to create a real catastrophe. Ask the eugenicists. Ask the architects of the modern welfare state. Ask anyone currently running a university DEI office on a six figure salary.

Interior Decorators Arrange. Governments Compel.

The philosophical gut punch of the whole interview comes when Sowell takes apart John Rawls, the Harvard philosopher whose “theory of justice” underpins basically every social justice studies syllabus in the country. Rawls talked about things society should arrange. Sowell’s response cuts through decades of academic fog in one line: interior decorators arrange. Governments compel. It is not a subtle distinction.

That is the whole ballgame. Every equity mandate, every diversity statement, every forced hiring quota is not some gentle rearranging of furniture. It is the government putting a gun, eventually, behind a demand. Sowell spent a career reminding people that the state is the one institution that can send you to jail, and every time the social justice movement leans on government to force equal outcomes, they are leaning on coercion whether they admit it or not.

He is not just making an abstract point either. Sowell has lived proof sitting right in his own biography. He grew up dirt poor in Harlem, raised by relatives, his biological father dead before he was born. He tells the story of not remembering a single gunshot in his old neighborhood as a kid, then going back decades later and watching high schoolers react in horror at the idea of simply walking a dog in the local park. The hidden century of black progress, from emancipation through the mid 1960s, happened without a massive government welfare apparatus. What came after 1960 quadrupled the rate of black children raised in single parent homes. Sowell is not guessing about correlation. He lived through the before and after.

Why This Still Matters Right Now

The timing of this compilation resurfacing is not an accident. Trump has spent his second term tearing DEI out of the federal government root and branch, Tulsi Gabbard has been exposing the DEI slush funds buried inside the intelligence community, and the same “equity” framework Sowell demolished on paper is finally being dismantled in practice. The old guard fought this hard because Sowell never gave them an inch of intellectual cover. No shouting, no strawmen, just data and a lifetime of lived experience that their theories could never survive.

That is why they tried to bury him instead of debating him.

The The city will cover the rent, the property taxes, and the construction costs on those stores.

Mamdani says the discount is simply meant to undo food inflation since 2019. It sounds generous. It sounds fair. It is also, almost word for word, the scenario Sowell spent his career explaining.

Here’s the mechanism, in Sowell’s own terms. A price ceiling doesn’t make a good cheaper to produce. It just makes it illegal to charge what it actually costs to produce and sell. Sowell traced this pattern across continents and decades — gas lines in 1973 that started before the Arab oil embargo even hit, because price controls came first. Rent-controlled apartments that quietly rot for lack of maintenance money, while housing investment flows toward the luxury units that were exempt from the law all along.

As Sowell wrote, a policy sold as help for the poor ends up “shifting resources toward housing affordable only by the affluent or the rich.”

Get 25% off for 1 year

Can a government really sell groceries below cost forever without someone, somewhere, eating the difference?

Mamdani’s own numbers suggest the answer is no. Grocery margins run a few percentage points on a good year. A 30 percent discount isn’t a rounding error you absorb through efficiency — it’s a subsidy, full stop, and taxpayers are the ones writing the check. Even sympathetic reporting on the plan has had to acknowledge the city is footing tens of millions in capital costs just to open the doors, before a single discounted egg gets sold.

Critics didn’t take long to reach for a familiar word.

The Republican National Committee called it a “communist fantasy.” Fox contributor Buck Sexton compared the five stores to Soviet-style outlets. Whether “communist” is the precise label or just the loudest one available, the underlying mechanism is the one Sowell spent his life diagramming: a small number of planners deciding what people should pay, instead of millions of buyers and sellers figuring it out themselves.

That’s really the whole disagreement in one sentence.

Sowell never denied that prices sting. He denied that hiding them solves anything. Rent freezes don’t build a single new apartment. Grocery subsidies don’t grow a single new head of lettuce. They just decide, by government fiat, who eats the cost of pretending the underlying scarcity isn’t there — and Sowell’s answer, unfashionable in 1987 and unfashionable today, was that reality always sends the bill eventually. New York is about to find out who it’s addressed to.
<p class="button-wrapper" wearing a gray suit and a red tie, sat down in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and did what very few people in that room could anticipate. He decided not to play along.

Watch the video above.

The chairman leading the hearing was Senator Joe Biden of Delaware. Biden tried to portray Judge Robert Bork as a man opposed to civil rights, and he pressed Sowell — a Black economist — to help prove that. Biden asked him if there were “enough” qualified Black students to occupy spots at places like MIT and Harvard. It was a loaded question dressed up to look like a factual one. the Americas with the analytical precision that defined his career.

The Spanish hauled out staggering quantities of silver and gold. They flooded European markets with it. And in doing so they triggered massive inflation across the continent — prices for ordinary goods doubled and tripled in some regions over the course of a century as the money supply expanded far faster than the actual production of things people needed.

Then the mines declined.

When the flow of metal slowed, Spain had nothing to fall back on. It had not built productive institutions. It had not developed manufacturing capacity. It had not cultivated the kind of market-oriented economic culture that generates lasting wealth through innovation, trade, and voluntary exchange.

It had extracted. It had not produced.

And once there was nothing left to extract, the empire began to unravel.

What Sowell Was Actually Arguing
<p class="button-wrapper" taken from indigenous peoples.

Sowell did not ignore that. But he asked the economic question that historians rarely ask.

If Spain got all the gold, why did it end up poor?

His answer cuts through centuries of accepted wisdom.

Looted wealth does not produce lasting prosperity. What produces lasting prosperity is the institutional capacity to generate wealth through productive activity — through markets, incentives, rule of law, and the kind of voluntary exchange that creates value rather than simply redistributing it.

Spain got the metal. The Dutch and the English got the institutions. And over the long run of history, institutions won decisively.

This is not a history lesson. It is an economic principle that explains what is happening right now.

What This Has to Do With Your Savings

Here is the connection Sowell would draw.

The US dollar has functioned for decades as the world’s reserve currency — the closest modern equivalent to the Spanish silver that once dominated global trade. Countries held dollars because they trusted what dollars represented. That trust was the institutional foundation that made the dollar valuable.

But Sowell’s framework asks what happens when the institution deteriorates.

The national debt is approaching $40 trillion. The government is adding to that debt at a pace that would have been unthinkable a generation ago. The Federal Reserve has a stated policy of 2 percent annual inflation — a deliberate, designed erosion of the currency’s purchasing power. The personal savings rate just hit one of its lowest levels in 65 years, meaning ordinary Americans are losing ground in real terms even as their nominal incomes rise.

Spain thought it had won because it had the gold. The people who actually built lasting wealth understood that gold is not wealth — productive capacity is wealth. Institutions are wealth. The ability to generate value rather than simply hold a metal is wealth.

But here is the other side of that argument.

FREE GUIDE

When the institutions start to fail — when the currency starts to erode, when the government starts to spend beyond what any productive economy can sustain, when the political system has every incentive to inflate rather than reform — holding something outside that system becomes the rational response.

Not because gold is wealth in itself.

Because everything denominated in a deteriorating currency is losing ground against something that cannot be inflated.

Sowell’s Broader Lesson for 2026

Sowell spent decades arguing that free markets, sound institutions, and productive incentives create lasting prosperity. He was right about that.

He spent equal time documenting what happens when governments try to shortcut that process — through redistribution, through monetary manipulation, through the illusion that controlling money is the same as creating value.

Spain thought controlling the silver supply made it powerful.

The Federal Reserve thinks controlling the money supply makes the economy stable.

Sowell’s fifteen years of research across civilizations suggests both were wrong about the same thing — that you cannot substitute control over money for the productive capacity that actually generates wealth.

For people whose savings are concentrated in a currency being deliberately managed toward inflation, the practical question is not whether to trust the system.

The practical question is what to hold when the system does to your dollars what Spain’s mines eventually did to its empire.

The free guide below explains what some retirement savers are choosing right now — and why the historical pattern Sowell documented points clearly in one direction.

[<a The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.” Sowell was serious about this. This isn’t simply a quip or an anecdote. Rather, Sowell identified the central dynamic he argued against in virtually every book and article he wrote: Politics creates its own arithmetic by making “promises,” and voters reward candidates for promising, rather than for the mathematics behind such promises.

Sowell Questioned the System Used to Demand Government Action

Beyond specific politicians, Sowell was skeptical of the whole apparatus used by citizens to demand that government act. “Those who scream to get the government to ‘do something’ never, ever ask for data showing what actually happened when the government acted versus what actually occurred when no action was taken by the government.” That’s a call for empirical evidence that most political debates fail to provide, and Sowell made his living providing that type of evidence, rather than the rhetoric surrounding it.

Sowell Was Just as Blunt About How Emotionally Manipulative Much of Today’s Political Language Is

“Said people who want to retain what they’ve earned are greedy, while those who desire to remove the earnings of others and redistribute it to those who will vote for them in return are compassionate” according to the language of politics. Sowell had no issue with generosity. He opposed the system that equates one group’s self-interest with virtues, while equating another group’s self-interest with vices — strictly based on which side of the equation has political power.

His Skepticism Regarding the Idea of a “Fair Society”

Sowell was particularly harsh regarding the single most-often-made argument politicians rely upon to promote further growth in government authority: that society can become equitable through government. “Life has never been anywhere near fair... therefore, the illusion that government can create fairness is a precious resource for politicians seeking greater control over our lives.”

This illustrates Sowell’s view of the business model of governing. An uncorrectable problem is continually presented as needing correction — thus producing an endless supply of votes.

His Skepticism Regarding Accountability in Politics

Sowell also criticized the accountability structure in American politics, where politicians usually face little or no penalty for failing to deliver on their campaign promises — unlike workers in virtually any other profession. Therefore, Sowell relied on data and history to support his positions — not on campaign rhetoric. Politicians require re-elections. Data does not.

How His Approach Toward Economics and Politics Differs

As noted above, Sowell describes himself as an empiricist. He observes evidence, diagnoses problems, and provides remedies for these issues, without regard for how politicians or members of the public may perceive his findings politically. This represents a radically-different approach than nearly all public commentators. Public commentators typically determine their conclusions based upon how appealing they believe they’ll be to their audience.

Therefore, Sowell’s long-standing critique of socialism — as an example of how politics can supersede objective evidence — demonstrates this difference. “Socialism generally has a track record of failure so blatant that only an intellect would choose to ignore or avoid it.” In Sowell’s opinion, this was not primarily a partisan attack. It represented an assessment of what occurs when an electorate decides to allow the political appeal of a candidate to be valued more highly than an examination of results produced by policies advocated by that candidate.

Truth Telling Requires Courage

For Sowell, perhaps his most biting remark concerning honesty in public affairs can explain why he maintained a distance from politics throughout his lifetime. “There are only two ways to tell the full truth: anonymously and posthumously.” While this is clearly a very dark joke, it is an honest description of why Sowell chose to spend his professional time writing books and articles instead of pursuing elective office. Politics rewards popularity. Sowell established his reputation through a consistent willingness to offer factual answers — regardless of whether the public wished to accept them.

Get 25% off for 1 year

Stanford’s Hoover Institution made a long overdue documentary tribute to the Maverick economist who refused to follow the crowd

That man is Thomas Sowell

America Reborn

Get 25% off for 1 year

Become a paid subscriber to support The Thomas Substack bring you high quality content all the time.

You can watch the premiere of “The Sowell Legacy” (above).

Recently, Hoover premiered “The Sowell Legacy,” a documentary tribute series to the life, work, and lasting impact of Thomas Sowell.

This new series combines conversations, archival footage, photographs, animation and visual storytelling and will appear in six parts during the summer and fall of 2026 on Hoover’s digital platforms.

Grab a paid subscription to get access to the entire library and exclusive early release.

Get 25% off for 1 year

This is More Than Just a Tribute Reel – Serious Scholarship Matters

Unlike your average tribute reel, Hoover included serious scholarship into this project by including individuals who would support Sowell’s ideas. That opening episode features historians, Victor Davis Hanson, Sir Niall Ferguson, and Coleman Hughes. They discuss aspects of Sowell’s body of work that some do not recognize at all — his writing as a cultural historian.

In addition, that first episode discusses how Sowell’s writings on topics such as race, migration, conquest, and civilization place American questions within the context of a much larger sweep of world history.

That provides a good example of Sowell being more than simply an economist reciting supply and demand curves. He constructed an entire historical model to understand why some societies, cultures and groups developed differently than others, based upon geographical characteristics, cultural traits and circumstances and not solely upon the simpler ideological explanations of most public discourse.

Why Was Sowell a “Maverick”?

He earned that label the hard way. At the beginning of his intellectual development, he had a strong commitment to Marxism. However, after working as a civil servant he found himself having to deal with real-world data on minimum wage laws and therefore reversed direction. For several decades thereafter he refused to fall into line with either the major political party or to soften his position to make either progressive or conservative ideologues comfortable. That is exactly what Hoover’s series intends to document: A scholar who relied upon evidence instead of ideology; who was willing to reach conclusions that were disagreeable to both progressive and conservative ideologues; and who continued to do so for over half a century without lessening his message to be agreeable to anyone.

Six Episodes Documenting One Large Career

The six-part series includes participants representing an incredibly broad range of interests, demonstrating how far-reaching Sowell’s influence was.

As indicated earlier, the series intends to document Sowell’s journey from his childhood in Harlem to his tenure at Hoover, featuring scholars, policymakers, educators, writers and public intellectuals who each provide their perspective on a different component of what contributed to the significance of Sowell’s career.

It matters because Sowell was not merely an economist. In addition to economics, Sowell published important scholarly works on topics such as education, race, culture, and the history of ideas. Moreover, he did it while maintaining a nearly total aversion to the type of political tribalism that characterizes so much contemporary commentary.

Still To Be Assessed — A Legacy

Hoover designated Sowell the greatest living economist on his 90th birthday. While Hoover is a serious organization offering serious honors, it also underestimates the true extent of what Sowell achieved. The Sowell Legacy appears to represent an effort to finally document the true extent of that achievement via a serious documentary treatment, not only documenting what Sowell argued but why he was willing to present those views alone when no one else was.
<p class="button-wrapper" Often, it takes less than 100 pages of data for a single anecdote to do the trick.

In an older C-SPAN clip that surfaced again this week, Sowell recalled something from his years of being in the classroom, watching and studying higher education. According to Sowell, a black law student had been cautioned by fellow classmates that there was a professor they knew of that would give no Black student a grade higher than a C. The warning was intended as a heads-up for the potential grade; in essence, an excuse in anticipation for a grade that had not occurred yet.

The student chose to ignore that warning and put forth the effort. The end result was a B+.

What makes that story relevant today -- after all these decades have passed since it took place? It eliminates the assumption, which exists within so much contemporary commentary about education today, that a grade lower than an A indicates bias against the student receiving such a grade.

Again, Sowell was never suggesting racism in academia does not exist. He stated in that same interview that predicting failure for someone prior to that failure occurring, solely based on assumed prejudice of the professor grading the paper, can create its own form of barrier. That student refused to buy into that predicted failure, and ultimately performed beyond the original expectation.

Sowell continued down this road, and warned that things have actually worsened over time -- not improved. In that same interview, he also expressed concern that racial tensions on many college campuses today are significantly greater than those existing in the broader community outside those campuses’ walls. He directed that concern directly at parents whose college experiences are vastly different from those their children are experiencing today.

Sowell advised parents not to believe that a positive experience their child will have on a college campus (decades after their own college experience), guarantees that the same experience will occur for their children today. The overall environment on campus has changed (and not necessarily for the better). As Sowell described, a campus that may have provided a sense of welcome to generations past, can provide an entirely different environment for current students -- shaped by tensions that did not exist when their own parents were the students.

There are two main concepts presented here -- both part of one interview. Grades do not prove bias. Nostalgia is not a good indicator for understanding a rapidly evolving campus culture.

Sowell never asked audiences to deny the existence of racism in America today. Instead, he consistently asked people to recognize when they are making assumptions about every uncomfortable outcome being evidence of racism -- especially when there is another explanation available (effort, preparation, etc.) as well.

In September 2010, Thomas Sowell published a column in the Orange County Register called “Fleecing Gold Investors.”

Most people never read it -- They should.

America Reborn

[ FREE GUIDE — PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE EARNED BEFORE THEY COME FOR IT ]

Because everything Sowell wrote in that column describes with precision the world we are living in right now — the debt, the deficits, the pressure on Social Security, the government’s temptation to inflate, and the quiet but relentless effort to control private gold ownership before the public figures out why.

What Sowell Found Hidden in the Obamacare Legislation

Sowell was not writing about healthcare. for gold transactions. Sowell recognized it immediately for what it was — not a consumer protection measure, not a tax compliance tool, but an early step toward government control over private gold ownership.

He had seen this pattern before. So had American history.

Why Governments Always Come After Gold

Sowell laid out the logic with the clarity that defined his career.

The gold standard historically limited what politicians could do with money. When currency was exchangeable for gold, there was a hard constraint on how much a government could spend and how much it could print. Politicians could not inflate away their debts without people simply converting their paper currency back to gold and exposing the scheme.

Franklin D. Roosevelt understood this. In 1933, he signed Executive Order 6102 — making private gold ownership illegal for American citizens. With gold out of private hands, the government gained full control over the money supply. It could print. It could inflate. It could quietly transfer wealth from savers to itself without having to openly raise taxes.

Private gold ownership came back in 1974. But Sowell’s argument was that the temptation never went away.

Even without a formal gold standard, private gold ownership acts as a check on government monetary policy. When people distrust the currency — when they see deficits expanding, debt piling up, and purchasing power eroding — they buy gold. That demand for gold is a signal. It is the market’s way of saying it does not trust what the government is doing with the money supply.

And governments, Sowell argued, do not like that signal.

The Social Security Connection Nobody Wants to Talk About

Sowell made an observation in that 2010 column that is even more relevant today than it was then.

Social Security was designed as a pay-as-you-go system — current workers pay for current retirees. For most of its history, there were enough workers contributing to cover the payouts. But the math began to shift as the baby boom generation approached retirement age, with more retirees drawing benefits than workers contributing to fund them.

When that gap widens — when Social Security faces the pressure of paying out more than it takes in — the temptation to inflate becomes acute. Inflation reduces the real value of debt and obligations. It is the easiest way for a government to quietly make promises it cannot afford slightly less expensive to keep.

Gold buyers, Sowell noted, understand this. When investors move into gold beyond jewelry and industrial uses, it is a signal that they do not trust the monetary policies being used to manage these obligations. They are protecting themselves from the inflation that is coming — not because they are pessimistic, but because they are paying attention.

What Has Changed Since Sowell Wrote This

The national debt in 2010 was approximately $13 trillion.

It is now approaching $40 trillion.

PROTECT YOURSELF

The Social Security pressures Sowell identified have not eased. They have accelerated. The baby boom generation is fully in retirement. The ratio of workers to retirees has continued to deteriorate. The gap between what Social Security collects and what it owes keeps growing.

The government’s options are the same ones they have always been. Cut benefits. Raise taxes. Or inflate.

History suggests the third option is the most politically convenient. And it is the one that hits savers hardest — specifically people who did everything right, held dollar-denominated assets, and trusted that the system would protect what they built.

Sowell’s conclusion in 2010 was not that gold is always the superior investment or that a gold standard is the only answer. His conclusion was more fundamental than that.

Control over gold is, at its core, a conflict between individual freedom and expansive government power. The government wants to manage the money supply without constraint. Private gold ownership is a constraint. It is a way for ordinary people to protect themselves from policies that erode the value of everything they have saved.

That conflict has not been resolved. It has intensified.

There is a free guide that explains what options exist right now for protecting savings from the monetary pressures Sowell described fifteen years ago — pressures that have only grown more acute since.

[ FREE GUIDE — PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE EARNED BEFORE THEY COME FOR IT GUIDE — PROTECT YOUR SAVINGS FROM WHAT THE FED IS DOING ]

Not what sounds good?

Not what feels compassionate. Not what the credentialed class says should work. What actually happens — in the real world, to real people — when institutions with enormous power make decisions that cannot be easily reversed.

His answer, applied to the Federal Reserve, is not comfortable.

“The Federal Reserve represented wonderful hopes. But we’ve had so many programs that represented wonderful hopes that ended in disaster.”

What Sowell Understood That Most Economists Still Refuse to Admit

Sowell studied under Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago. He understood monetary policy at a level most commentators do not. And his conclusion was not that the Fed needed better leadership or better models.

It was that the institution itself was built on a fundamental error.

He put it plainly in Basic Economics.

“Inflation is a quiet but effective way for the government to transfer resources from the people to itself, without raising taxes. The money that people have saved is robbed of part of its purchasing power, which is quietly transferred to the government that issues new money.”

PROTECT YOURSELF

And then the quote that cuts to the heart of what the Fed actually does.

“One of the biggest taxes is one that is not even called a tax — inflation. When the government spends money that it creates, it is transferring part of the value of your money to themselves.”

This is not theory. This is accounting. Every dollar the Fed creates dilutes the value of every dollar you already own. It is a transfer of wealth from savers to the government — executed without legislation, without debate, without a vote, and without most people ever understanding it is happening.

The Hoover Institution Interview That Changed How People Think About This

In his long-running interviews with Peter Robinson on Uncommon Knowledge at the Hoover Institution, Sowell made an observation about government intervention that applies directly to the Federal Reserve.

He pointed to the Harding administration of the early 1920s as one of the most instructive examples in American economic history. When Harding took office, unemployment was at 11.7 percent. He did not intervene. He cut spending. The Federal Reserve kept rates at 6 to 7 percent — not at the artificially suppressed levels that have defined modern monetary policy.

The result? Unemployment fell to 6.7 percent the following year and 2.4 percent the year after that.

LEARN MORE

Sowell’s point was not that doing nothing is always right. It was that economies have natural recuperative powers — and that intervention by central planners who believe they understand the system better than the market tends to produce the opposite of the intended effect.

The Fed’s history since its founding in 1913 is largely a history of those unintended consequences. The Great Depression. The inflation of the 1970s. The housing collapse of 2008. The inflation surge of 2021 to 2024. Each crisis followed by more intervention. Each intervention creating the conditions for the next crisis.

Sowell’s framework for understanding this is his most important insight.

Stage one thinking asks what a policy is designed to do.

Stage two thinking asks what actually happens as a result.

The Fed was designed to stabilize the economy and prevent financial panics.

What actually happened — in stage two — is that it gave the government a mechanism to spend money it does not have, finance debt through currency creation, and transfer wealth from savers to the state through the invisible tax of inflation.

What This Means for Your Savings Right Now

The personal savings rate in America recently hit 2.6 percent — one of the lowest levels in 65 years. Inflation is running at 3.8 percent, outpacing wage growth for the first time in three years. The national debt is approaching $40 trillion.

These are not separate problems. They are the same problem expressing itself in different ways.

The Fed’s mandate requires inflation. Its target is 2 percent per year — meaning your savings lose purchasing power by design. Not as a side effect. As the stated goal.

Sowell understood this for decades. The people who have protected their wealth over the long run understood it too. They did not hold dollars while the Fed diluted them. They held things that exist outside the dollar system — things that cannot be created out of thin air by a committee decision.

Gold and silver have served this purpose for thousands of years. They hold value not because of trust in institutions, but because of what they physically are.

For retirement savers looking at a system Sowell spent his career warning about, there is a free guide that explains what options exist to protect savings from the institution he described as a program of wonderful hopes that ended in disaster.

[ <a He didn’t need to see the experiment coming to already know exactly how it ends.

His whole career has been based upon just that one very simple statement. Markets function due to people acting on their own self-interest. And nobody in D.C. or NYC knows anything about a person’s self interest better than the people themselves.

“Employers have an incentive to hire people. Workers have an incentive to get jobs. Lenders have an incentive to lend. They don’t need somebody in Washington trying to micromanage all of this,” said Sowell. This is not a flippant comment. This is the basis of virtually everything Sowell has written in regards to economics over a span of decades.

It is not difficult to imagine hearing Sowell’s comments as an exact response to what is happening presently within New York City. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has included government funded grocery stores as a central component of his administration, with promises of reduced pricing in areas he defines as food deserts.

Mamdani has already taken photographs holding down bananas which were priced 30% less than normal retail, and is touting them as examples of the success of the program.
<div There was no reason to. For decades he explained exactly how the events described above will play out.

Sowell’s Second Insight Which Cuts Even More Directly To What Is Currently Unfolding In New York City

Sowell’s second fundamental insight cuts even more directly at what is currently transpiring within New York City. “If what you have is the government taking money from people who are personally responsible and giving it to people who are irresponsible or, in many cases, corrupt, that’s not a viable situation for the long term. You are going to have ever more people being ever more irresponsible,” he stated.

Applying this framework to a government subsidized grocery store produces the predictable result. A detailed analysis of this specific process has already begun circulating on-line; it appears to be a direct quote from a Sowell lecture. Government sponsored grocery stores operate at 30% lower prices than local grocery stores. Due to the inability to compete with the artificial price floor created by the subsidy, local grocery stores cannot survive. The government sponsored store becomes the sole remaining option available to residents of the previously defined food desert and subsequently creates a condition which is far worse than prior to its implementation; there is no longer any competition existing in terms of quality, selection, nor availability of products.

This is not speculative regarding potential outcomes in some remote future. This represents the same process by which price control measures have generated similar results throughout cities and countries around the world for centuries. This represents the same mechanism (with documented data) that Sowell devoted his professional life to illustrating through actual data instead of ideology.

Bananas Are Not The Hard Part

Critics of Mamdani’s rollout have also quickly focused on the same issue that Sowell would likely identify as his first concern. Bananas cost approximately twenty cents per unit. They represent perhaps the most common commodity found in the U.S. grocery supply chain. Subsidizing bananas provides little if any evidence of a successful government operated grocery store model. At best, subsidizing bananas proves little of substance, since bananas were never the primary problem facing profitable operation of grocery stores in lower income communities.

There are numerous other, significantly more complex, logistical and economic issues affecting New York City that could potentially be solved using funding allocated for this purpose. An image op with reduced price fruits/vegetables does not provide any evidence that any of these issues are being resolved.

Government Can’t Eliminate Costs

An economics commentator succinctly summarized the underlying flaw in the concept: “government can’t eliminate costs.” Therefore, municipal grocery stores may only sell food items at a rate below market value when some entity absorbs the lost revenue (taxpayers, suppliers, etc.). Regardless of the terminology used to describe it, “discount,” “subsidy,” etc., someone somewhere always pays for the lost revenue generated by selling product at below market rates. As previously noted, this is not a recent invention regarding discussion points relative to price controls and subsidies. This represents an argument that Sowell has advocated regarding subsidies and price controls for decades prior to when most of Mamdani’s advocates were born.

Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Worth Celebrating

Sowell’s Basic Economics, which outlined these very concepts in clear, non-technical terms for individuals without any prior knowledge of economics, is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. So too is his lesser known but equally impactful book entitled The Einstein Syndrome: Bright Children Who Talk Late.

To honor two books which have continued to shape public thought for a quarter century, we are offering a 25% off back-to-school special on both titles. If you are attempting to understand exactly why a government-funded grocery store in New York will shortly encounter the identical barrier that every price-control experiment has encountered in every jurisdiction, or if you are raising a bright child who has yet to begin speaking, now is your opportunity to obtain either or both of the books that arrived at the finish line first.
<p He didn’t need to. When Sowell wanted to demolish someone, he just let the facts do the talking, and nobody got demolished more thoroughly in his columns than Barack Obama.

Sowell’s dismissal of Obama’s credentials remains one of the most quietly savage moments in his decades at the Hoover Institution. When interviewer Peter Robinson listed Obama’s Columbia degree, his Harvard law degree, and his years teaching at the University of Chicago, then asked whether Sowell was duly impressed, Sowell didn’t hesitate. He laughed and replied, “the road to hell is paved with Ivy League degrees.”

Paid subscribers get access to the full archive and early releases.

Subscribe now

That wasn’t a throwaway joke either. Sowell spent years building the actual argument behind it, and it wasn’t flattering to Obama in the slightest.

Isn’t it telling that one of the sharpest economic minds in America looked at Obama’s resume and saw a warning sign instead of a credential?

He Called Obama Dangerously Confident, Not Brilliant

Sowell’s most direct assessment of Obama’s character came down to a single, devastating sentence he repeated across multiple columns and interviews. He wrote plainly, “Barack Obama is one of those people who are often wrong but never in doubt.”

That line wasn’t an isolated jab. Sowell built an entire argument around it, explaining that confident ignorance is one of the most dangerous qualities a leader can possess. His reasoning was straightforward. A leader who combines total self assurance with a shaky grasp of history and economics doesn’t just make mistakes. He convinces an entire country to make those mistakes right alongside him.

Sowell didn’t stop at vague criticism either. After reading Obama’s memoir, Dreams from My Father, Sowell zeroed in on specific factual errors, including Obama’s claim that white men went to Africa to drag away the conquered in chains. Sowell pointed out that Obama had confused two entirely different historical eras, the Atlantic slave trade and European colonization, treating them as one event separated by centuries of actual history.

The Book That Convinced Sowell He Was Right All Along

Sowell’s read of Obama’s memoir became a turning point in how he described the man publicly. He argued that Obama hadn’t spent his life searching for truth at all, because Obama had apparently decided early on that he already possessed it. Sowell noted that Obama actively sought out people on the far political fringe throughout his life rather than stumbling into them by accident.

Here’s the sharp observation that made Sowell’s criticism land harder than most. He pointed out that Obama, according to Professor Richard Epstein at the University of Chicago Law School, made virtually no effort to engage with other faculty members while teaching there. Why bother debating ideas, Sowell essentially asked, when you’ve already decided you know the answer?

Sowell’s assessment of Obama’s presidency only grew harsher with time. In his book Dismantling America, he described the Obama administration not as some isolated political mistake, but as the embodiment and culmination of dangerous trends that had been building for decades, trends he believed had escalated to what might be a point of no return.

The Policies Themselves Didn’t Escape His Scorn Either

Sowell wasn’t just critiquing Obama’s personality. He went after the substance of Obama’s agenda directly, arguing that Obama seemed completely unaware that many of his proposed policies had already failed in other countries at other points in history. That’s not a personal insult. That’s an economist with decades of research pointing out that Obama was repeating mistakes the historical record had already settled.

This wasn’t a one time outburst from a man having a bad week either. Sowell returned to these same themes across syndicated columns for years, at an age when most people would have long since stopped bothering to fight these battles in print.

Why did one of America’s most respected economists dedicate so much ink to a single president if he didn’t see something genuinely alarming underneath the rhetoric?

A Pattern That Never Softened

What makes Sowell’s criticism of Obama so different from typical political sniping is the consistency behind it. He wasn’t reacting to a single speech or a single policy misstep. He built a sustained case across years of columns and Hoover Institution interviews, always returning to the same core argument. Confidence without humility, and credentials without curiosity, make for a genuinely dangerous combination in the hands of someone running a country.

Sowell never softened that assessment as the years passed either. He kept returning to Obama as a case study in exactly the kind of intellectual arrogance he spent his entire career warning Americans about, long after Obama had left office and the news cycle had moved on to other fights entirely.
