We built our own tiny shoreline and put it to the test. And while we waited for our glass to change, we transformed nano tape into colourful, squishy, sea-glass inspired stickers to decorate a Sea Can of our own. To speed things up, we turned all that shaking into a dice game.

Sea Glass Tutorial

• Before breaking your colourful piece of glass, place it inside a sturdy plastic freezer bag and double-bag it to help contain any small shards.

• Once broken, pour the entire bags contents into a plastic or tin container. We used a 4-cup deli containers since they’re abundant in our household.

How long should we leave our glass in the Sea Can?

• As long as you can! We turned the shaking into a dice game (see below) so the movement becomes part of our daily experiment because the transformation will depend on how much your Sea Can moves.

• The Sea Cans give preschoolers a tiny sense of how weathering and erosion can gradually transform materials.

What I love about nano tape is that you can completely transform it into a different material. Mixed with cellophane we felt like we were holding tiny stained glass windows.

The really interesting part happens when you start layering. Place blue over yellow and a new colour appears. Try red over blue for purple.

For preschoolers, it’s a tangible introduction to colour mixing. By stacking and noticing they get to discover how two familiar colours can combine to create a new one (the principle behind subtractive colour mixing).

ROLL THE DICE: TWO WAYS

With dice, preschoolers begin to recognize quantities without counting each dot (subitizing) and connect those quantities to a real consequence.

Things that float, trail, curl, ripple and sway. Something translucent that catches the light. A scrap of fabric that lifts with the slightest breeze. Ribbon that seems to swim when you move it through the air.

For this invitation, look for materials by how they behave, rather than what they are.

Working with air-dry clay

It’s squishy, forgiving and wonderfully open to experimentation. And can you believe you can just press treasures and textures into it or drop it right onto the sand?

Air-dry clay is especially lovely for young makers because almost every action leaves evidence behind. A cockle shell becomes a pattern, sand becomes texture, a fingertip becomes a dimple.

Day one of this invitation starts with shaping the jellyfish bell (or medusa). We experimented with smoothing the clay using ocean water—and discovered that the salt made it dry out faster.

We’d packed water bottles for smoothing cracks, but keeping a little jar of kelp-filled ocean water nearby turned out to be a delightful addition: part tool, part tiny seaside experiment.

It took our clay bells two days to fully dry. While we waited, we found what might be the most perfect fabric remnant at our local thrift store—for just a few dollars.

Supplies

  • Each of my kids got to pick one color and then we added some shading in the opposite color once the bell dried.

• 2 hooks per lantern: wooden rings or make one from polymer clay

  • try: Cernit translucent Polymer (but don’t mix with other clays since it will melt in the oven)

• decoration: sea glass, glass beads

While your clay dries…make clay hooks

The tentacles of your little ones creations will loop through a top loop back through the bell. Once all of the tentacles are in place you secure a second loop under the bell to keep in place. The Cernit is a slightly firmer product than Sculpey III but once warmed up, the kids can roll into tubes. Also: the translucent effect is very fun!

Creativity rarely begins with new materials. More often, it begins with new eyes.

This week, we’re working with yarn (also called fibre art). Unlike drawing on paper, building in three dimensions requires constant adaption. Children revise, redirect, and improve their ideas as new possibilities emerge.

Almost fifteen years ago, I walked into a hat-making workshop hoping to learn how to knit. It was an overwhelming experience discovering that making a hat was just part of the lesson. First came learning the language and possibilities of the craft.

I’ll never forget when I came across the fibre artist, Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam. Based in Nova Scotia, Toshiko is best known for her large-scale play structures for children. I was still a complete beginner in knitting, but I found it deeply inspiring to see how one material could shape an entire creative life.

Why Yarn?

Yarn has something builders call tension. Pulled gently between two points, it creates surprising strength without becoming rigid. Look closely and you’ll discover that every strand is made from thousands of tiny fibres twisted together into one continuous thread. Under a magnifying glass, it’s a remarkable piece of engineering.

Unlike many craft supplies, yarn can be untied, rewound, and transformed again and again. A single thrifted ball might become a shelter today, a pulley tomorrow, or glued and dyed onto some artwork next month.

Tips:

• Because textile recycling is still limited in many communities, thrift stores often have bags of yarn looking for a second life. Experiment with different fibres, mix unexpected colors, and enjoy discovering the character of each material.

  

• At a craft store, many yarns are sold in skeins. That’s a loose figure-eight loop that keeps yarn from stretching out. Unfortunately, trying to untie your yarn from a skein will only result in tangles. Wind your skein into a ball first. That’s a practice all knitters start with.

  • You are more likely to find skeins of yarn that are already winded into balls at a thrift store.

Tutorial

My favorite part of this invitation were the hours we spent outdoors. We spread out blankets, brought snacks, turned on the sprinkler, and, for an afternoon, it felt as though we’d forgotten our real house existed. It was equal parts camping, architecture, and art, and somehow that simple combination made a few ordinary afternoons feel like an adventure.

Tips for the tiny version

• Instead of using a full ball of string to build sections of the shelter, cut a few 1-metre long pieces and make them into bundles.

• If your shelter is a bit wobbly, try building one side of the wall at time.

• Use clay for securing the posts or bury them into the ground.

One material shaping an entire creative life.

What I love most about artists is that their work is rarely shaped by just one thing. It grows from a collection of interests, experiences, and observations that slowly weave together into only something they could have made.

Take someone who is:

• environmentally conscious

• an avid tennis player

• an industrial designer

• deeply sensitive to noise

And you have:

400 million tennis balls end up in the landfill every year.

This week, our children looked at yarn and saw a home.

Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam looked at yarn and saw a child’s playground.

Mathilde Wittock looked at discarded tennis balls and saw furniture.

Different materials. Different lives.

The same question: what could this become?

It’s a tough moment to watch, but it makes complete sense. When everything in a new space feels unfamiliar—the people, the sounds, the supplies—a child’s first instinct is self preservation, not play. It’s hard to be brave, creative, or curious when your whole system is holding its breath, waiting to see if this new environment feels safe.

This creates a subtle paradox: we want children to dive in, experiment, and follow their curiosity at the exact moments they may naturally feel like holding back.

One of the simplest ways across that bridge is familiarity.

With a familiar material or activity, comes an entry point: I know what this is. I know something I can do here.

That’s part of why Tiny Table returns to the same simple materials again and again. Familiarity builds confidence, and confidence creates more room for experimentation. Over time, the supplies stop belonging to a specific activity and become part of a child’s creative vocabulary—materials they know well enough to use in increasingly imaginative ways.

The goal isn’t an endless stream of new activities. It’s helping children become more capable with what they already have, so beginning feels easier and their own ideas have more room to take over.

Seaside Stamps: Polymer clay is particularly good for the beach because it’s portable, clean, and endlessly reusable before baking. Pack a few pieces in a small container and children can press it directly onto shells, barnacles, driftwood, rocks, and other shoreline textures—capturing details that are difficult to recreate at home. Unlike air-dry clay, there’s no rush: if a print doesn’t work, simply roll it up and try again.

Cloud Tapestry: Each strip helps hold the others in place through friction and tension—the same basic principle behind baskets, fabric, and woven structures. It’s an early, hands-on encounter with how structure can emerge from a simple repeating pattern.

Clock Tutorial

The Moments Worth Keeping

This week, I’m leaving the tutorial in your hands.

Rather than rushing to finish the project, spend the week (or summer!) collecting. Encourage your child to notice the tiny things they can’t bear to leave behind—a favorite rock, a shell, a feather, a penny, or any little treasure that tells the story of their summer.

When you’re ready, roll out a slab of DAS air-dry clay about ¼ inch thick and gently press each treasure into the surface. Lift the objects back out before the clay dries, or leave them embedded if you’d like them to become part of the finished piece. Punch a hole in the top to hang in the house.

I recommend making one plate for each child. Their collections will be completely different, and that’s exactly the point.

A few helpful tips:

• Keep the clay wrapped whenever you’re not using it—it dries surprisingly quickly.

• If the edges begin to crack, smooth them with a damp fingertip.

• Allow the finished plate to air dry completely for 24–48 hours, depending on its thickness, before painting or displaying.

If your child is unsure about baking their treasures into the clay, begin with a sand dollar–sized test piece and preserve just one special find. Once they see how beautiful it turns out, they may be ready to create a plate with the rest.

Whether your table is covered in imperfect clock hands or a pile of pocket-fuzzed beach stones this week, remember that you are doing something beautiful: you are helping your child map their world. Time will inevitably speed up, but these are the slow, messy, wonderful moments that teach them what is truly worth holding onto.

Clay Creature Tutorial

Almost every clay book I’ve ever picked up for young kids asks them to sculpt these incredibly detailed, perfect little animals. And honestly? They’re just not that fun for most two- to six-year-olds. They usually just end up frustrated.

So, I wanted to completely rethink clay from a child’s perspective.

Instead of trying to sculpt the “perfect” creature, this week is all about making simple clay beads and links. Once they’re baked, your child can thread them together into a creature that’s as long, silly, or wiggly as they want. It’s totally achievable, completely open-ended, and leaves so much room for actual creativity.

Tiny Hands Tutorial

A quick heads-up on baking: Check your clay package for the exact temp (most ask for around 275°F). If your child's clay piece is thick, aim for about 10–15 minutes in the oven. Keep a close eye on it after 10 minutes, though—those little fingertips and thin edges can scorch fast!

Clay meets kids exactly where they are.

Unlike toys with instructions or crafts with predetermined outcomes, clay asks just one question: What do you imagine next? Whether the answer is a creature, a keepsake, or just a messy lump of clay, every decision strengthens the invisible foundations of creativity: planning, flexible thinking, spatial reasoning, persistence, and the confidence to build something entirely new.

It rarely sounds like “I’m bored.” Instead, it sounds like:

Instead, you want a box filled with bulk, raw materials that invite open-ended, process-focused creating.

When you give a child a stack of scrap paper, some googly eyes, and a pile of pipe cleaners, you aren’t telling them what to build. You are trusting their thinking. Suddenly, that demand for an “experiment” or a drawing buddy transforms into independent exploration. They get lost in the tactile rhythm of making, which slows down their frantic summer energy and gives them a rare pocket of deep focus.

But here is the real parenting hack for the summer: buy these supplies in bulk, and you will never have to make a panicked, last-minute run to the toy store for a birthday party gift again.

Summer is peak birthday season. Instead of spending $30 on a plastic toy that will be forgotten in a week, you can pull from your bulk supply stash to create a personalized, highly coveted “Creativity Kit” for every party your child attends. Memory Keepers Tutorial

One of the easiest ways to increase engagement is to let children choose their materials before the making begins. Instead of offering a single block of clay, lay out a selection of individually wrapped polymer clay colors and invite your child to pick their favorites. That small act of ownership often leads to more investment in the project itself. The photo holder is also surprisingly useful—a child-made object that can display artwork, family photos, lunchbox notes, or birthday cards long after the clay has cooled.

I started playing tennis for the first time ever a year ago. If you’re a mom and we’ve met in person, I have almost certainly tried to recruit you into the sport. Tennis is made for moms! (I say). Think about it: keeping small humans alive means our reflexes are constantly dialed up to an eleven. When you lower the stakes to simply tracking a florescent sphere with a racquet, it feels like absolute, delicious freedom. In fact, chasing that ball on a weekly basis has done something unexpected—it’s made me a far less reactive mom at home. It’s like the court absorbs all that high-alert energy, leaving me calmer when the daily chaos hits.

But I’ve been surprised by how these chapters overlay in a child’s life, too. When a new interest pops up, the old ones don’t just fade into the background; there is still plenty of room in the day for both making art and playing outside. I’ve noticed that having art to lean on in the liminal space between the school day and soccer practice has become an anchor for my son. Spending a quiet pocket of time at the table gives him a sense of grounding—it lets him decompress from school so he can show up to the field completely recharged.

Still, stepping into this new athletic era has made me feel a bit out of my element. Specifically, I’ve found myself wondering: how do we nurture this budding love of game without accidentally becoming a raging sideline parent?

I think the secret lies in keeping the stakes low and the variety wide. When we treat soccer with the same open-ended curiosity as a blank sheet of paper, the pressure evaporates.

A technique is a way of making curiosity more repeatable.

Passing a ball, folding paper, mixing color, balancing stones, cutting fringe, threading beads, or building a ramp all do the same developmental work: they give the child a new pattern of action. And once the child owns that pattern, they can use it anywhere.

Think of this week’s Play Menu as the quiet anchor for your busy weekend. I’m sharing two distinct painting setups that require very little prep but offer deep engagement—the perfect creative palate cleanser before heading out to the field or park.

Here’s what’s on the menu for Saturday morning…

This week, we’re borrowing an idea from artist Paul Klee.

Klee believed that drawing didn’t always begin with a plan. Sometimes a line could simply wander across a page, discovering things as it went. He famously described drawing as “taking a line for a walk.”

Children already understand this way of creating. A scribble becomes a snake. A curve becomes a river. A few marks become an entire world.

These invitations invite children to follow curiosity rather than instructions. Through new painting techniques, surprising materials, and playful experimentation, they’ll discover that art isn’t always about making a picture. Sometimes it’s about noticing where the line wants to go.

Tiny Table Tool Spotlight: Speedball Block Printing Ink

This is the 5th menu featuring Speedball ink! See: Rocky Roads, Family Signatures, Crater Stamp Prints, Press & Reveal. I might even call it the MVP since its colors are excitingly vibrant and totally washable.

In The Shape Parade, fruit stamps work so well with Speedball ink because they naturally contain moisture, which helps create a thin, even transfer layer. And since Speedball ink is thicker and tackier than paint, it will sit on the stamps surface rather than soak in.

Field Note:

Paul Klee believed that simple shapes and marks could become entire worlds. In that spirit, don’t stop at fruit and vegetables. We also experimented with a small balloon and a handful of q-tips, discovering new circles, dots, and patterns with each print.

Encourage your child to think less about what the tool is and more about the marks it can make. A balloon becomes a circle-maker. A q-tip becomes the dot-maker. A lime becomes a pattern-maker.

String Walk Painting Tutorial

Your toolkit:

• Cotton string or yarn

• 1-3 colors of tempura paint

• Tray to contain paint

• Thick paper folded in half

• Painting smocks or table covering

Klee wasn’t interested in reproducing reality perfectly.

He was interested in exploration, emergence, and discovery. His work invites us to simply follow a process and see where it leads.

And maybe that’s the ultimate antidote to our own sideline anxieties. A preschooler does not need immediate mastery of watercolor, collage, weaving, stamping, rhythm, soccer, balance, and storytelling all at once. But they do benefit from repeated encounters with different ways of making, noticing, and solving.

This week may look, on the surface, like a simple collection of painting techniques. But beneath the ink, string, and stamps is a reminder for both us and our children: when we treat the field and the art table with the same open-ended curiosity, the pressure evaporates.

By trading the performance for the process, we find our way back to what this crafty, sporty life is all about. Not a perfectly executed goal or masterpiece to frame—just absolute, delicious freedom.

In many ways, that collecting never really stops. As we get older, the objects just change shape. A matchbook from a favorite dinner, movie tickets tucked into a jewelry dish, a concert poster pinned to the office wall. They are small, tactile keepsakes that help us remember not just what happened, but who we shared the room with.

Field Note: The Threading Tower method works best as a partnership. Your child stacks the circles while you occasionally slide them down the thread, making room for the next round. The extra adult involvement often helps younger children stay successful and engaged.

The habitat is really just an excuse to keep the story going.

Long after the playdate has ended, the habitat remains on a shelf, dresser, or bedside table. Not as a craft to admire, but as a reminder of the conversations, collaboration, and imagination that brought it to life. Sometimes the most meaningful keepsakes are the ones that hold a story.

This isn't just sensory play—it’s the blueprint for self-reliance. When we trust them with real tools, they internalize that trust as true capability. Guiding a sharp point through a tough surface teaches them, in their very bones, how to handle risk and frustration. They learn to slow down, adjust their grip, and move forward with quiet confidence.

When a simple line can transform from a road into a river, a map, or the spine of a creature, a child is learning that meaning is mutable and entirely within their control. They aren't just following a track—they are discovering how to construct order out of a handful of scattered elements, a foundational problem-solving rhythm they will use to navigate the world.

• Paint. We used Speedball ink with a small brush since we had some. We also tested classic white tempera paint. 🚩 Tempera works, but it can be tricky for making fine, continuous lines.

Tiny Table has changed a lot since I first started sharing weekly activities. What began as a collection of ideas has slowly become something more intentional: fewer invitations, deeper attention, and a stronger focus on the underlying conditions that help children learn well.

My own path shaped that shift. Before early childhood education, I worked in fast-paced education environments focused on how people learn and adapt in a changing world. Now, I spend my days watching those same questions unfold much earlier in life, inside classrooms, at home, and through play.

So this issue is free. Partly as a marker of where Tiny Table is heading, and partly because I want new readers to experience the shift firsthand. Activities designed not just to entertain, but to build attention, flexibility, creativity, and connection over time.

Mixing up the earth in your own hands—and eventually eating what you grow together—will always feel like a miracle.

While I won’t pretend to be a seasoned gardener, I can speak for the power a garden holds in early education. Between the weight of the dirt and the fragrance of the herbs, the garden offers a sensory richness that no classroom or screen can replicate.

If, like I did, you need some direction to get started, do this one thing: plant strawberries in containers. They are the most resilient gateway into the garden, providing a reason to return every single morning. Before long, your little ones will be checking the runners and scouting for berries, turning a simple container into a hub of daily discovery.

Trellis #1: Driftwood Ladder
The simplest of the three. Your child gathers the sticks; you assemble.
You’ll need about 10 pieces plus one longer anchor piece. Tutorial below.

Trellis #2: Diamond Knot
More focused, slightly more technical. Repetitive and steady once you start.
A ~2 ft section takes about 20 minutes. Tutorial below.

Trellis #3: Hoop / Ring
Built from flexible branches. Look for young green growth or fresh willow.

Whichever you choose, start with a grippy string.
Jute works well. It’s textured and holds tension, which helps plants like pole beans and sweet peas climb and stay attached.

How much of our children's wonder is found in the things we didn't plan?

Mary Oliver, the patron saint of noticing, never fails to remind me that our job isn’t to manufacture wonder; it’s to provide the exposure.

Tea Garden: 4 plants, simple system, a reason to return

A workable tea garden comes down to four plants that regrow easily, a light harvesting rhythm, and low-tech drying.

Mint

Grow: Sun to partial shade, keep soil moist, best in a pot (spreads quickly)
Child harvests: Pinch top leaves or snip stems into a basket
Dry: Hang small bundles or tray-dry 3–5 days

Lemon Balm

Grow: Sun to partial sun, cut back often
Child harvests: Rub leaves to smell, snip stems and strip leaves
Dry: Hang or tray-dry ~3–5 days, out of direct sun

Lavender

Grow: Full sun, dry, well-drained soil
Child harvests: Gather stems into small bundles
Dry: Hang upside down 1–2 weeks, then remove buds

Chamomile

Grow: Full sun, well-drained soil, self-seeds
Child harvests: Pinch off flower heads (“pop” them into a bowl)

This week, I had an unexplainable (and rare) desire to bake. In what seemed like a true Ratatouille moment, where a little rat chef takes hold of your limbs to cook yummy things, I was pulled around the kitchen gathering flour, eggs, milk, baking soda, and ~*matcha*~.

What I am saying here is that I had an unconscious desire to make bright green and tea tasting muffins. And not only that, as I threw back 5 or 6 of them, I realized that every spring, like clockwork, I bake with matcha.

It’s a pull I can’t quite explain, but looking at those bright green lumps, it felt like a projector flicked on in my mind. Frame by frame, a ritual was hiding. Japan at 18 years old. An engagement party. Karaoke. Moving to Vancouver and falling in love with T&T Supermarket. Finding new love in Chinatown. The pandemic. And now, a snack made for a preschooler.

Matcha is bright, energetic, earthy tasting and seemingly, made for May.

This week, play revolves around ritual: a simple way to build meaning through repetition.

We tested a matcha mini muffin recipe that works for both kids and adults. It’s balanced, not too sweet, and easy to repeat. The batter comes together quickly, bakes in under 15 minutes, and holds up well for snacks or shared plates.

The Spring Hand invitation is a simple, personalized way to mark this season. It captures what your child notices and chooses right now, while holding the size of their hand in this moment. It becomes something to revisit later, both for what they gathered and how small it once was.

Recipes for a ritual

1. Mark the end of the week with lighting a candle. Light it at dinner and chat about the week ahead, what’s everyone excited about? Nervous for?

   

2. With a wax pen, personalize the candle for your family. Pick a day of the week, the surname of your family, or tie it to an upcoming hurdle or milestone. Perhaps, a big overseas trip is coming up, write the location on the candle. A scary medical follow up? Call the candle “health” in a language you love.

3. If the transition between school pickup and dinner is a struggle, set up a crab boil (snack edition). Tape the corners of some craft paper to the dining table, spread some snacks and washable markers around. Encourage kids to make silly drawings using the snacks as part of the design. What would a monster with grape eyes look like?

Connecting to that place is what builds an internal compass. It’s what makes us pause, look closer, and start figuring things out, and, heart squeeze, it’s what leads our children to start caring for themselves.

Week 1: Protecting the Early Layers of Learning
We started simple. Black, white, and some primary colors. Clear contrast. The goal here wasn’t to teach a concept, it was to protect how children first take things in. Before explanations, before labels, there’s a stage where noticing is sharp and instinctive.

Week 2: Embodiment
It moves to the body. Light and dark weren’t ideas, they were experiences. Flexibility shows in how they tested and how they came back to the activity.

Week 3: Dear Star Child
The moon gave us a way to hold the question without forcing an answer. It looks like it’s changing shape, but it isn’t. The wedge is real, but so is the whole. Both can exist at once.

One hundred invitations later.

An invitation is not just something to do, it’s a way to be together.

The idea comes from the Reggio Emilia classroom, where adults offer open-ended starting points instead of set activities. Here, it’s been adapted for family life. Now, 105 times over.

It’s turning outdoor cleanup into a game and show of strength. It’s stirring a pot of hot chocolate and eating crunchy biscuits to help regulate. And of course, it’s pulling out the paint sticks and letting creative minds run.

The activity is just the starting point. What matters is what makes it possible: sitting side by side, staying with something a little longer, and having something familiar to come back to.

That’s what turns an invitation into something that sticks.

At the start of the month, the Artemis II mission launched four astronauts moonside, including the first Canadian to take part in a lunar mission. A crew of pilots, engineers, and scientists, with nearly 200 years of life experience between them, became the first humans in over 50 years to see the Moon up close.

They spent decades preparing for a journey that lasted about 10 days, moving carefully around the Moon without ever landing.

Believing in oneself over and over for years and years is really the heart of flexible thinking.

In a way, we’re living in a moment where humans are re-learning how to leave the Earth properly again. It’s careful, repeated work that involves following paths, noticing patterns, and building understanding over time.

And though these activities may shift a child’s understanding of the moon. It doesn’t change shape, even if it appears to. The awe remains, especially when we begin to see our world as a small blue dot.

Distance, wonder, and belonging

Three books. The Darkest Dark is about overcoming your fears and finding a way to lead with wonder. The Way Back Home explores friendship, imagination, and cooperation through the adventures of a boy and a stranded martian. Star Child is a reflective story about the soul’s journey from the cosmos to Earth and back.

Note: the Star Child is, strangely, out of stock everywhere but here is a simple reading of it online.

The Play Menu

Wise Astronaut and Crater Maker are low-lift activities that can be set up to fill the gap between challenging transitions. Think: after getting dressed and before breakfast or after school and before dinner. Set out a bowl of their favorite cereal and have them count out the ages of each of the four Artemis II astronauts into a jar. In the recipe cards, you’ll find an astronaut template to cut out and paste. Tip: count in sets of 10 until they reach the age of the wise astronauts (50, 49, 47, 50).

Activities to take outside: Crater Stamps and Orbit Threading are two-ingredient crafts. Meaning all you need is one piece of cardstock, black paint, string, and a bead, for two new ways to see the Moon. You can make your own stamp with a single foam sheet, a linocut or if you set this up outdoors, your child can find bark, pinecones, leaves and other nature materials to stamp “craters” onto their Moon. Next: set up a thread-able string (favourite material linked in supply list) capped with a bead and pair it with a pre-punched circle (or have them punch holes themselves).

As AI gets better at giving answers, the differences will become easier to see. It can process information, but it can’t embody the output it produces.

This is where the human advantage remains. The embodiment of perception, judgement, and adaptability. And it begins in the tiny hands of a child as they learn to notice and respond.

This week, each activity is built to help children feel the difference between things before they are asked to name or explain them. Light and dark. Hot and cold. Expected and unexpected.

Each activity asks the same thing in a different way: What changes? What stays the same? And what do I do when it doesn’t match what I expected?

Flexible thinking Arc: Part 2

By the end of the week, children experience difference in five ways:

• through effort

• through movement

• across conditions

• through contrast

If your child already has a cherished rock collection at home, Around & Through Lines is chance to revisit some favorites and draw little paths around them (much like contour lines!).

To carry forward the notion of shades, we used white and black beans for scales in Build & Place Fish. If your little one is craving color and dazzle, use sequins as scales. In the tutorial, I show how to give your child ownership over building the fish shape with clay. The pressing and sliding motion is great for 4+ olds but littles will need help (template provided in recipe cards).

Activities to take outside: Carry & Compare and Temperature Keepers are really just fun games to connect outdoors. Scan the environment for things your child can carry, then mark off two areas to create a pile of heavy and light items. Not only does your child get to test their strength but you might just end up with a cleaner yard than when you started. In the latter, set up a picnic blanket with two large bowls holding hot and cold water. Children explore the environment for different items to test in the bowls.

BOOKS!

For baby: It’s nice to be a Narwal (with touchable sequins). A Narwal is basically a real unicorn of the sea whose horn is really it’s tooth (!).

For toddler/kid: A Rock is Lively. If your child is starting to notice the difference between rocks, this book is a beautiful guide to explore those curiosities.

It’s a menu for expecting the unexpected. Behind-the-scenes, the activities came together after a few four-year olds rallied around their shared belief that WHITE IS NOT A COLOR! But describing white as a shade is only half the story. White behaves differently depending on what you’re talking about. It can have no hue in art, yet be made of every color in light.

So much of early learning is simply building the capacity to hold two conflicting ideas at once. Instead of teaching the physics of light, we’re inviting them to ask: Can something be two things at the same time?

Introducing ARC 3: Flexible thinking!

That’s exactly what these activities can show.

• A mural you can’t see at first.

• A drawing that only appears later.

• A painting you uncover instead of create.

• A water play prompt that refuses to behave.

• One ingredient that becomes two different (and delicious!) foods.

Each activity stretches your child’s ability to adjust, reinterpret, and try again. You’ll notice moments of pause, surprise, and reworking.

Lately, it doesn’t take much to get started. Surprisingly (to no one but me), I had to rummage through five different baskets of art supplies to find a single WHITE CRAYON. So make sure you have at least one on hand (I had to break ours into two).

A note on #3 (Uncover Painting). Painting smocks required! This one will be messy but it’s a worthwhile sensory experience. In the tutorial you won’t see any table protectors or aprons since I sometimes feel like the cleanup is the same. However! If your table is has deep wooden grooves you’ll want a cover taped down firmly.

Spending your days with little ones means there will be some negotiations over what’s fair. You may be noticing that, regardless of your approach, there’s more pushback, bigger feelings, and quick swings between independence and collapse.

It feels inconsistent because it is.

Around 4-5, children go through a developmental surge that reorganizes their brain, emotions, and identity—creating instability that can rival adolescence in intensity.

Kids are becoming more neurologically efficient (white matter increases, synaptic pruning begins) and the emotional stakes increase dramatically. Children start to compare themselves socially and wonder where they fit in to things (asking: am I good at this? Am I liked? What kind of person am I?).

At four, children are in between worlds. They still rely on physical experiences to stay steady (touching, throwing and hitting (!), running, climbing, repeating familiar routines) but they’re also starting to think ahead, imagine outcomes, and care about how things “should” go. They can explain what’s fair, but still melt down when it doesn’t go their way. This in-between state creates friction: they’re reaching for a level of understanding and independence they can’t consistently hold yet. What looks like resistance is often the strain of that stretch.

So what does this ask of us as parents?

Less fixing. More scaffolding.

Support looks like keeping expectations simple and repeatable. Letting the body lead when the mind gets overwhelmed (more movement, more hands-on, more return to the familiar. It also means expecting inconsistency and not taking the pushback personally. What looks like defiance is often real effort (an attempt to manage more than they can fully carry).

This is where I hope Tiny Table can support you.

The arcs are designed to match this exact moment in development. Instead of offering scattered activities, each week sits inside a larger story. It’s something children can step into, return to, and carry forward through play. Learning sticks best when it’s part of a narrative, not a one-off task.

Begin by cutting simple petal shapes together. Invite your child to choose colours and place the cellophane “windows” inside each form. Once dry, glue the finished flowers onto the crown. When not in use, hang near a window to catch the light.

Over the last three weeks, you’ll find 15 play invitations to notice, to marvel, and to pass the story of care forward, one small act at a time.

Inspired by the poems of Mary Oliver, the Noticing Arc follows a simple progression: first turning inward to listen to the body, then outward to observe the small beauty of the natural world, and finally toward one another, where attention becomes care.

Through the Body Clock, flower studies, and nesting activities, children practice the skill that sits beneath so much learning: the ability to notice what is happening around and within them, and to respond with curiosity, patience, and care.

In every arc, I try to include a few philosophical ideas for parents to sit with. If, like me, you’re feeling like there is more information than ever and fewer clear ways to sort it, philosophy can offer a way of thinking that helps clarify what matters.

This time I turned to Japanese Aesthetics to help guide my approach to parenting. I want my child to trust their own thinking, so I looked for language that could be woven into the play recipes to support that—making it easier for both parent and child to slow down, observe, and decide what comes next.

I see it play out daily as objects are pulled from their places and gathered into carefully constructed forts. Sometimes the fort is a spaceship or a hideout for catching The Bad Guy. But more often I hear little feet patter back to their cushioned abodes, tucking yet another household object into the corners and settling into the safety of their nest.

Psychologists (like Lisa Feldman, Dan Siegel, Marc Brackett to name a few) often remind us that naming emotions helps regulate them. When a child can say I feel frustrated or I feel nervous, the feeling becomes easier to hold. What was once overwhelming can become something recognizable.

Noticing and naming our emotions is a learned skill. As parents, we are also learning another one: how to decode the emotions our children don’t yet have words for.

For the last few months, my two-year-old has become slightly hysterical during her bedtime routine. I’ll be brushing her teeth or reading a book and she suddenly cries out that she’s hungry. So we head to the kitchen for a snack, only for it to remain untouched.

One night it occurred to me that I had never heard her say the words I’m tired. She didn’t yet have the vocabulary for that feeling, so she was repeating the feeling word she knew best and applying it to a different situation, creating confusion for everyone.

With practice we matched the feeling word (I’m tired) to the need (I need to go to sleep now), and that particular bedtime drama disappeared.

Something similar can happen when we begin noticing the care in our homes.

When we practice naming the small actions that keep life running (things that often go unnoticed) it becomes a form of gratitude that feels good for everyone involved.

Care often moves quietly through a home. It looks like refilling a water glass. Slicing an apple. Hanging up a jacket.

When we pause to notice and name these acts of care, children begin to see that care is not abstract. It has a shape, it can be practiced.
