And then there’s the name. The “Gala Pant” is, of course, technically The Row’s Gala Pant, but somewhere along the way it seems to have become shorthand for the entire silhouette. The key is knowing where spending more actually makes a difference and where it doesn’t. At TBC, we’ve never believed that a higher price tag automatically means a better wardrobe. We’d much rather see one beautifully made coat worn with a great pair of high street trousers than an outfit made up entirely of designer pieces. It’s the mix that makes a wardrobe feel personal and the best.

Where we tend to invest

There are certain categories where quality can really change how something looks, feels and wears over time.

Outerwear

A great coat or jacket can carry an entire outfit. It’s also something you’re likely to wear repeatedly, so fabrication, cut and construction are worth paying attention to. A beautiful trench coat over jeans and a simple knit can make the most basic outfit feel elevated and elegant.

Shoes

Not every shoe needs to be an investment, but the pairs you wear often are worth spending more on. A beautifully made loafer, boot or simple flat can elevate everything around it.

Bags

We tend to favour bags that don’t belong too heavily to a particular season or trend. Something simple, beautifully made and genuinely practical will work just as well with a £50 shirt as it will with tailoring.

Knitwear

This is one area where fabrication really matters. Rather than having ten average knits, we’d rather have a small rotation of cashmere, merino or good quality wool that we look forward to wearing.

Tailoring

Fit is everything. A beautifully cut blazer or pair of trousers is all you need, and you can mix and match.

Where we’re happy to spend less

This is where the high street can be brilliant. A simple white T-shirt doesn’t necessarily need to cost £150. The same goes for cotton shirts, layering pieces, certain denim and more trend led styles that you might not want to wear for the next ten years. Brands like COS, ARKET, Massimo Dutti and Uniqlo can be particularly good for those wardrobe foundations that allow your investment pieces to do the talking.

There’s also a sweet spot between high street and traditional luxury that we come back to again and again. Investment means something different to everyone

The traditional advice is to invest in coats, bags and shoes but we think it’s more personal than that. If you wear a white shirt three times a week, perhaps that is where you spend your money. If you live in denim, finding the perfect pair of jeans might be more worthwhile than buying an expensive handbag. The best investment pieces aren’t necessarily the most exciting things you buy.

Before investing, we’d ask: Will I wear this regularly? Does it work with what I already own? Would I still want it without the label? Am I paying for quality, or simply paying for the brand?

The TBC formula

Start with good foundations. Add one or two pieces that bring quality or character. Mix in something vintage or pre-loved when you can. And, most importantly, don’t overlook the pieces already in your wardrobe.

There is the satisfaction of putting together two things you have never worn together before. Rediscovering something right at the back of your wardrobe that suddenly you love again.

It is easy to dismiss clothes as frivolous. And yet, we have always cared about getting dressed. Long before Instagram, Pinterest or fashion magazines existed, clothing was used to communicate identity, status and belonging. In Renaissance Europe, sumptuary laws even dictated which fabrics, colours and embellishments different social classes were permitted to wear. Clothes were considered powerful enough that governments quite literally tried to control them.

The Ritual of Getting Ready

There is something wonderfully ordinary about the ritual of getting dressed. Opening the wardrobe, considering the weather, changing your mind, putting something on, taking it off again, and eventually returning to the first thing you tried.

For centuries, this ritual was far more elaborate. In eighteenth century European courts, getting dressed could take hours. Clothing was layered, fastened, pinned and arranged, often with the help of servants. Marie Antoinette famously turned dressing into a public ceremony, with members of the royal court participating according to rank. Thankfully, most of us can now get ready without an audience of courtiers, but the ritual remains.

The music we put on while getting ready for dinner, the clothes laid out.. the endless messages sent to a friend asking, “What are you wearing?”

The Joy of Dressing Up

At some point, making an effort became slightly unfashionable. The highest compliment an outfit can receive today is often that it looks “effortless”. We admire the woman who have thrown on a white shirt, jeans and perfectly battered loafers without giving the matter a second thought.

Of course, achieving this level of effortlessness can require an extraordinary amount of effort. But there is also something to be said for trying. For wearing the dress that feels slightly too much or putting on the earrings. Changing out of the clothes you have worn all day before going to dinner. Using the beautiful bag instead of saving it for an occasion important enough to justify taking it out of its dust bag.

Historically, clothes were precious possessions. Before mass production, garments were expensive and time consuming to make. They were repaired, altered, passed down and carefully looked after. There was pleasure in anticipation: the Sunday best dress, the wedding suit, the coat saved for special occasions. Perhaps there is something nice about remembering that clothes can still make an occasion feel special.

Fashion Is Meant to Be Fun

Amid conversations about trends, investment pieces, cost per wear and building the perfect wardrobe, it is easy to forget something very simple: fashion is supposed to be enjoyable. Of course, there is big value in buying thoughtfully and choosing pieces you will love for years, but not every decision needs to be quite so serious. Sometimes you are drawn to something simply because you love it, because it makes you feel good, or because you can already imagine where you will wear it.

Children understand this… they wear swimming goggles to the supermarket, princess dresses on ordinary Tuesdays and Wellington boots when it is not raining. They have not yet learned all the rules about what they are supposedly meant to wear. They simply understand the joy of getting dressed.

One of Life’s Small Pleasures

We all have days when getting dressed feels like just another thing to do. But then there are the days when you put on something you’ve been saving, rediscover an old favourite at the back of your wardrobe, or simply make a little more effort than usual and you feel better for it.

Of course, clothes can’t change everything. But they can change the mood of a day. They can make an ordinary dinner feel like an occasion, remind us of a different time in our lives, or simply give us the small pleasure of feeling good in what we’re wearing.

Perhaps it’s never really been about the clothes at all….

We’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, partly because of the response to our recent Instagram post on home truths and partly because conversations like this come up all the time in styling appointments. The reality is that most of us wear a surprisingly small percentage of what we own. And while there’s always room for something new, the best purchases tend to be the ones that work alongside what’s already in your wardrobe.

As stylists, we’re constantly reminding clients that a great wardrobe isn’t necessarily the biggest one. It’s the one where you know what works, what you love, and what earns its place there.

Style is confidence, not the outfit

Think about the people in your life who always look good. Like not just expensive or trendy, but good. Put together in a way that seems completely effortless. What are they actually wearing, most of the time? Probably nothing that revolutionary. What they have is this quality that’s really hard to name, they have a kind of certainty about themselves that comes through whatever they’ve got on.

That thing can’t be bought, we know that sounds like something printed on a tote bag but it’s true. You can have the most perfect wardrobe in the world and still stand in front of it every morning feeling like nothing works, because its not the clothes.

Style is figuring out what you actually like, not what you think you should like. It’s dressing for your life, not the one you have in your head. It takes time and it requires being a little bit ruthlessly honest with yourself, which can be tough but it’s the only thing that actually works long term.

Invest in your basics and yes, we know how boring that sounds

We are aware this is the least exciting thing we could possibly say. We are a shopping platform. Telling you to buy less and buy better is not exactly our most commercially minded advice. But it’s true, and it’s actually at the heart of why TBC exists in the first place. And it’s the first thing we say to every single client…

A white shirt that actually fits you properly. Trousers in a cut that works for your body not the model’s body. A coat with shoulders that sit perfectly. These things will carry you for years to come. They’ll save you, over time, from buying 30 cheaper things that don’t quite do the job.

The reason people skip the basics and go straight to the exciting stuff is that basics require you to know yourself a little more first. Your actual shape, your actual lifestyle, your real colour palette, not the aspirational version. But once you have that foundation, getting dressed gets easier. The I have nothing to wear feeling starts to go away and not because you have more, but because what you have actually makes more sense together.

Most impulse buys become wardrobe clutter

It’s a very specific feeling, right after you’ve bought something you didn’t need. The dopamine has peaked, it’s on the way down, and there’s this small voice going did I actually want that?

The problem is that £18 feels like almost nothing. But that £18 item, and the one before it, and the three you bought in the sale, and the one in two colours because it was such good value, they accumulate. And then your wardrobe is full of stuff and you can’t find the things you love and you feel like you have nothing to wear, which makes you want to buy something, and round it goes.

Fashion is designed to inspire us. That’s part of what makes it fun. But it can also make it easy to lose sight of what we need versus what simply caught our eye in the moment.

Before you add something to your basket, just three questions: do I already own something that does this job? Does it go with at least three things I already have? Would I still want this in a month? Try to make the choice consciously rather than reactively.

When a sale is worth it (and when it isn't)

“It was £200, now it’s £80, I’m saving £120.” That is not how saving money works. You are spending £80 on something you probably weren’t planning to buy two weeks ago. The £120 exists nowhere except in the space between an inflated original price and a discounted one which, incidentally, is sometimes calculated with exactly this psychological trick in mind.

The scarcity stuff works on people too. Last few left, ends tonight, don’t miss out. The urgency feels real even when it’s manufactured, which it often is. Sales can be a good time to buy things you actually wanted at full price and were waiting on, remember!

Why we want what we want

We’re not going to pretend we’re not part of this. We share products, create shopping edits, work with brands and spend a lot of time thinking about fashion. We’re part of this world too, which is probably why we find it so interesting.

When you see someone with a beautiful home, great style and a life that looks appealing recommend a product, you’re rarely just looking at the product itself. You’re seeing it in the context of everything else. The item becomes tied to the lifestyle, the aesthetic, the feeling and it is completely natural to start associating the two.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, inspiration is part of why many of us enjoy fashion, interiors and beauty. The challenge is remembering that what we’re often responding to isn’t just the product, but the wider story around it. The challenge isn't avoiding influence altogether, it's understanding what you're responding to. Is it the product itself, or the feeling attached to it? The goal isn't to stop wanting things, it's simply to become a little more intentional about the things we choose to bring into our lives.

The emotional side of shopping

We love shopping. It’s our job, after all. But there’s a difference between buying something because it earns a place in your wardrobe and buying something because you had a bad day and needed a dopamine hit. Most of us have done both!

The pieces that last are usually the ones bought with a little more intention. The dress you’ve been thinking about for weeks, the perfect sandal that solves a wardrobe problem, the jumper you know you’ll wear on repeat. Not the thing that felt exciting for five minutes and then disappeared into the back of the wardrobe.

Shopping isn’t the problem. Shopping without purpose usually is.

The ‘nothing to wear’ feeling is a symptom, not a shopping problem

All of the above is really just leading here. That feeling, standing in front of a full wardrobe, running late, already a bit depleted, certain that you have nothing to wear, is not solved by more stuff.

We’ve stood in a lot of people’s wardrobes. It’s one of our favourite parts of the job, actually, there’s something really intimate about it, someone letting you into that space and being honest about what’s working and what isn’t. And the same things come up again and again.

The wardrobe has too much of the wrong things, not enough of the right ones. Sometimes it’s that you’re dressing for a life you don’t really live, the wardrobe is full of who you thought you’d be rather than who you are. Sometimes you’re bored and restless and it’s being projected onto your clothes.

We dress for a lot more than warmth. We dress to feel like ourselves, or like the version of ourselves we want to be that day. It’s a lot to ask of fabric, honestly. Not that clothes solve everything, but they can make facing the day feel a little easier. And while a great outfit can’t fix what’s actually going on, there’s something to be said for the confidence that comes from getting it right.

What we’re trying to say

We love fashion. We love shopping. We love discovering great brands and helping people find pieces they’ll wear forever.

But the best wardrobes we’ve ever seen aren’t necessarily the biggest or the newest. They’re the ones that feel thought of, personal and reflective of the person wearing them and that is ultimately what we’re trying to help people build.

The Oversized Shirt - The most versatile thing in a summer wardrobe. Over a swimsuit, knotted with shorts, half tucked into trousers.

I love this one from Matteau, perfect for the city with black or white trousers or on holiday over a bikini. This Massimo Dutti one is great too. This Rohe one is on sale over 50% off. And the perfect Leset striped Shirt. I just discovered this brand OSSOU, and love absolutely everything, this shirt is up there with the detailed sleeve.

The Elevated Tee - A slightly heavier cotton, a cut that actually fits well, something that looks good with a pair of jeans.

This FloreFlore one with the v-neck is so comfortable and flattering. This Leset tee in red is great for a pop of colour. Found this graphic yellow tee (channeling Jennifer Lawrence) and another here, vintage so will sell out quick!

Lightweight Trousers - Wide leg linen or a relaxed straight cut in ivory or a soft neutral, or even a pop of colour!

If I could all of LESET, then I’d be pretty happy, love these trousers and also these for some added colour. Equally chic in the city (London incoming heatwave) or thrown on for holiday by the beach. Also, these Toteme ones have been on my wishlist for a while now. COS has just released their summer runway, and these are cute. Can’t forget a simple black pair too.

The Dress - Easy silhouettes and fabrics that don’t crease.

This Toteme cotton midi is such a good one, easy and looks expensive. And this House of Dagmar dress is simple but a must. This Matteau checked midi is also on heavy rotation, halter neck, backless, cotton voile so it's light for those city heatwaves. The Leset Nando maxi and Barb are also on the list. DOEN really does the cutest dresses, like this mini.

Sleek Flats - Because summer doesn’t have to mean sandals.

These Auralee leather flip flops are so good, a new brand to NAP with lots of great other pieces too. These Proenza Schouler sandals have a little something extra with the embellishment. And these Toteme thong sandals square toe are perfect for summer. And of course The Row, have bought out some new ballet flats, definitely on the expensive side but something you will have forever.

The Summer Bags - Raffia worn throughout the year, in Zoe Kravitz Style. Or a

Every summer, without fail. Loving the Arket raffia tote, similar to The Row one from last year. The Massimo Dutti midsized raffia tote is another brilliant one, slightly more structured which we actually love for the city. If you want something not raffia, the Toteme beach tote in ecru is the one (although this mini raffia is very cute!) And the COS Saltwater straw tote is the smart buy, the leather lining gives it the city vibe and is very similar energy to the Lie Studio one but literally half the price.

Good Accessories - the easiest way to make the same clothes feel completely different, just by switching up the finishing touches.

I love earrings, and these Nina Gordon ones and Le Sundial are at the top of my wishlist, they will elevate any outfit. Doubles up as a belt or necklace, LOVE Ben-Amun’s pieces. Juju Vera will always be a favourite, I could quite happily own the entire collection. And I recently bought this for a little added colour — trying to be better at weaving it in.)

The Summer Glow -

SPF first. A light tinted moisturiser ( best in the game), a cream blush in something peachy and warm, a bit of highlighter on the cheekbones, a glossy lip that doubles as a cheek tint.

Where the Edit gets personal

The way you dress your space is no different to the way you dress yourself. Both are edited. Both are intentional. And both, when done with real thought, become a reflection of a sensibility rather than a response to a trend cycle.

The Rise of the Considered Home

Minimalism in the home isn’t a new idea, it stretches back through Scandinavian design principles, through the Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi, through a long standing belief across cultures that restraint is its own form of confidence. But what feels different now is who’s having the conversation.

A generation that grew up with too much, too much choice, too much content, too many things marketed as essential is quietly course trying to correct. Towards meaning. The question has shifted from “what can I add?” to “what actually deserves to be here?”

And increasingly, the home is where that sensibility is expressed. Fashion has its public dimension you wear things out into the world, where they communicate on your behalf. But the home is just for you. Which makes the choices, in some ways, more revealing.

On building something that lasts

There’s a concept in Japanese design called ‘monozukuri’ loosely translated as “the art of making things.” It refers not just to craftsmanship, but to the spirit and intention behind an object. The idea that what something is made of, and how, and why, is inseparable from what it means to own it.

We think about this a lot at TBC not just in homeware, but across everything we cover. The brands that endure are the ones built with that kind of intentionality. They’re not chasing relevance. They’re just making things exceptionally well, for people who notice.

Zara Home

The homeware is beautiful, neutral, well proportioned, and edited in a way the main Zara line sometimes isn't. And Zara Home's own loungewear (separate from the fashion line entirely) has become some of the best on the high street.

Huegah Home

A female founded brand drawing on hygge, Japandi, and mid century references - mushroom lamps, chrome, sculptural wood. I have the Pistachio bench from there and its the best pop of colour.

Ruggable

Ruggable makes machine washable rugs that are actually stylish, they do hundreds of designs, including collabs with the likes of Liberty. The secret is their two piece system: the rug cover simply detaches and goes straight in the washing machine. Perfect if you have kids, pets, or just a chaotic life.

This one has become something of an obsession. A Scandinavian auction platform, and the quality of what comes through lots of mid century furniture, vintage ceramics, glassware, art is extraordinary. The thrill of the bid, the patience of the wait.

Still the best place on the internet for one of a kind pieces, if you know how to look. Independent ceramicists, textile makers, small batch candle studios. The trick is patience and a specific search.

Studio & Store

Based in Saddleworth near Manchester, Studio & Store is the kind of place you stumble across on Instagram and immediately follow. Curated vintage furniture, mid century classics, handcrafted lampshades and UK made pieces. Worth following on Instagram for the new drops alone.

A final thought

The home isn’t fashion there’s no structure to learn, no silhouette to master. It’s more an invitation to pay the same quality of attention to the space you live in as you do to everything else.

The vintage pieces, the second hand finds, the ones that take a bit more digging, I find that the fun part. And let’s be honest, when someone asks where something’s from and it’s vintage, it’s always that bit more satisfying.

The best wardrobes don’t feel entirely new. It’s usually a mix modern staples alongside pieces you’ve picked up along the way. Vintage and second hand adds something you can’t really replicate I feel, better fabrics, more interesting cuts.

Even platforms like Farfetch have some great pre loved edits now, which makes the whole thing a bit easier to navigate and sift through. We always come back to that 70% foundation, 30% personality edit we did and we feel this is the 30%.

Not in a dramatic, obvious way, just little shifts that go unnoticed. Your routine changes slightly, what your days look like evolves, what you need from your clothes becomes a bit more specific. But your wardrobe stays the same. So over time, things start to feel slightly out of sync. You open it and everything is technically “you”, but it doesn’t quite meet you where you are now.

What’s interesting is that this doesn’t usually show up as a clear problem. It’s not that nothing works, it’s that getting dressed takes more effort than it should. You try things on and take them off again, you adjust outfits throughout the day, you rely on a small rotation without really knowing why those pieces work and others don’t. There’s just a low level of friction, and most people assume that means they need something new.

But more often than not, it’s not about adding. It’s about readjusting. Taking a step back and asking a different question, what does my life actually require from my wardrobe right now? Because when you look at it properly, most of your life sits in quite a specific rhythm. It’s not constant events and it’s not complete downtime either, it’s that in between space where you want to feel put together but still comfortable, thought of but not over the top, practical but not boring. And that’s where wardrobes tend to fall short.

There’s also something in accepting your life as it is, rather than trying to dress for someone else’s. It’s easy to take cues from people whose routines look completely different to your own, but when you come back to what your days actually require, things tend to fall into place more naturally.

A lot of what people own is built around the edges. The more dressed up version of themselves, the more relaxed version, the holiday version. But not enough sits in the middle, which is where most days actually lie. So you end up either slightly overdressed for your reality or slightly underwhelmed by it, and neither quite lands.

It might be a tailored trouser that looks great but never quite feels right during a full day, versus a slightly softer, more relaxed cut that you end up wearing constantly. Or a jacket that only works over one specific outfit, compared to one you can throw over anything and it immediately pulls things together. Even something as simple as footwear, a pair you love visually but avoid when you know you’ll be out all day, versus the ones you don’t have to think twice about. That contrast tends to tell you everything.

This is also where it can be helpful to actually see it. Looking at photos of what you wear constantly, or even just noticing what you reach for across a typical week, gives you a much clearer picture than what’s sitting in your wardrobe untouched. The difference between what you own and what you actually live in is usually where the answer sits.

What’s been more useful for me is paying attention to pace. Not just what I wear, but how often I wear certain types of things. Which pieces actually keep up with me across a full day, from morning through to evening, across different settings, without needing to be changed or reconsidered. Because those are the ones doing the real work, even if they’re not the most noticeable.

It also makes you more aware of what doesn’t work. The pieces that only work in isolation, the ones that rely on a very specific outfit to make sense, the ones that feel slightly off unless everything else is exactly right. They’re not bad pieces, they’re just not particularly useful.

There’s also something in being honest about how you want to feel day to day, not in a big abstract way, but practically. Do you want to feel sharp, relaxed, slightly undone, structured? Because your wardrobe should support that consistently. A lot of the disconnect comes from buying pieces that represent how you want to feel, without thinking about how that actually translates into your routine.

This is also why the idea of rebuilding a wardrobe can feel overwhelming, because people assume it means starting again. But it’s usually much simpler than that. It’s noticing where things aren’t quite aligned anymore, refining what you already have, and being more selective about what you add next.

I think a lot of this is why we started TBC. It’s always where we begin. Not with outfits or trends, but with what makes sense for your life as it is now. The pieces that can move with you, that don’t need to be overthought, that slot naturally into your week. In the same way you wouldn’t start decorating a house before the structure is right, your wardrobe works the same way. Get the foundation in place first, and everything else has something to build on.

Because once that part is right, everything else has somewhere to be. You can be more considered with what you add, more specific with what you’re looking for, and far less reactive in how you shop.

And when that’s in place, getting dressed becomes much simpler. Not something you have to figure out each time.

1. The Shape of Outerwear

There’s a noticeable shift in outerwear proportions this season. Longer, softer shoulders, and coats that feel slightly oversized but still tailored.

3. A Styling Trick

One styling trick appearing repeatedly across the shows is layering classic pieces in slightly unexpected ways.

Rather than adding more trend-driven items, many collections focused on styling wardrobe staples differently, stacking shirts, layering poplin under knitwear, or introducing a silk scarf between layers to add colour and texture. A crisp shirt under a V neck knit, a scarf tucked under tailoring, or even multiple shirts layered together were simple tricks that appeared again and again on the runway.

It’s a reminder that sometimes the most effective styling comes from reworking the pieces already in your wardrobe rather than adding something new.

It’s about taking cues from what we saw on the runway and considering how those ideas can translate into spring. One that stood out was the return of cropped jackets — an easy way to shift proportions and add structure to lighter outfits. It’s a shape that’s continued into the most recent shows too, seen above at Khaite.

While these collections themselves may be designed for winter, the ideas carry easily into the coming season, lighter layers, adding colour, relaxed and oversized tailoring, and pieces that work across multiple outfits rather than one off. It’s about taking inspiration from what we’ve seen and adapting it for spring, whether through colour, subtle layering, or small styling details.

Comfort Actually Matters

A lot of people think comfort and style sit on opposite ends, but that’s not how we see it. If something doesn’t feel good, you won’t wear it and we see that all the time.

Comfort for us means clothes that move with you, don’t need constant adjusting, and feel like you when you put them on. That’s why we pay so much attention to fit, fabric, and how something wears over a full day, not just in the mirror. If it only works in theory, it’s probably not worth having.

Once the Base is Right, Styling is Easy

Once those foundations are in place, styling becomes intuitive rather than stressful. This is where personality comes through like adding a pop of colour, a great coat, statement jewellery, a shoe that changes the whole vibe of a look.

Sometimes people assume our way of working is restrictive, or that it leaves no room for creativity. It’s actually the opposite. We just don’t start with excess, we always start with clarity. Working with what you already own is the first step, not the final one. It helps you see the gaps properly. It shows you what’s missing, what’s outdated, what no longer fits your life, and where something new would add value.

We don’t believe in buying more for the sake of it. But we absolutely believe in buying better and buying with purpose.

Most of us have grown up learning that clothes should be flattering.

And more often than not, “flattering” is code for making yourself look smaller, slimmer arms, narrower hips, a flatter stomach. It’s an idea so ingrained that it quietly shapes how we shop, dress, and judge our outfits, even when we don’t consciously agree with it.

This isn’t about that.

At TBC, we think good dressing is about how clothes work with your proportions, not against them. How they sit, move, and create balance, so you feel comfortable and like yourself.

A quick reframe

Body shape frameworks aren’t about putting bodies into boxes or aiming for a particular silhouette. They’re just a way of understanding why certain things feel easy and others feel strangely off, even when your body hasn’t changed.

When an outfit works, it’s hardly because it’s made you look smaller.
It’s because nothing is pulling, clinging, riding up, or needing constant adjustment.

Confidence usually comes from not thinking about your clothes at all.

Before we start: a note on body shapes

Most people don’t fit neatly into one category and that’s completely normal. Many women are a blend of two (or more) shapes, and proportions can shift over time.

Think of the categories below as starting points. The goal here isn’t to change your body, it’s to understand how clothes work with it.

The slightly nerdy bit

Our brains respond pretty consistently to a few things, the same principles used in design, interiors, and architecture:

• Visual weight darker colours, matte fabrics, thick knits and structure feel heavier to the eye. Lighter colours, shine, sheerness and movement feel lighter.

• Line direction vertical lines read as length, horizontal lines read as width. Diagonal lines (wraps bias cuts) add movement.

• Break points wherever there’s contrast lie colour, fabric, proportion, the eye goes there.

It is less like dressing a body, and more like putting together a composition.

A quick word on colour (and why the “rules” are pointless)

You do not need to avoid certain colours because of your body shape.

There’s no real logic behind:

• “Never wear white if you have hips”

• “Black is slimming”

• “Bright colours shouldn’t be worn below the waist”

Colour doesn’t behave differently on different bodies, it just creates contrast and draws the eye.

Wear colour where you like it.
Wear white trousers if you love them.
Wear red skirts, pastel knits, or head to toe cream.

The only genuinely good reason not to wear white is practical.

For example: if you’re like me and spill coffee, olive oil, and unidentified substances on yourself regularly, white is simply an administrative nightmare.

At TBC, we work with a range of women, different body shapes, different sizes, different styles and lifestyles. And the one thing that’s consistent is this: there is no colour that “belongs” to one body type and not another.

That said, skin tone is a different conversation to body shape.

Certain colours can flatter your complexion more than others. This is where colour analysis can actually be useful but not as a rulebook, as more information. A way of understanding why you might always feel great in navy but washed out in grey, or why chocolate brown lights you up more than jet black.

For example, technically speaking, black isn’t the most flattering colour for my skin tone. On paper, there are plenty of shades that “suit me better.” But I love black. I always have. I feel like myself in it, so I wear it anyway.

Colour analysis should give you options, not remove them. If you love black, wear black. If a colour makes you feel confident, comfortable, or pulled together, that will always read more strongly than whether it sits perfectly within your “ideal” palette.

You’ll also know that we tend to start with strong foundational pieces — great trousers, good denim, knits, timeless outerwear. But that doesn’t mean dressing in beige forever. Think of it as building a base first, then adding colour and flair on top. Once the foundations are right, colour becomes playful rather than stressful.

At the end of the day, the best colour is the one you actually want to put on. Everything else is just guidance.

A loose guide to proportion

If you want a reference point, look at the relationship between your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips, either by measuring or simply by eye.

• Rectangle: shoulders and hips similar, waist less defined

• Round / Oval: fullness through the midsection

• Hourglass: bust and hips similar, defined waist

• Pear / Triangle: hips fuller than shoulders

• Inverted Triangle / Heart: shoulders or bust broader than hips

Rectangle Body Shape

Add definition and dimension

When shoulders and hips are similar in width and the waist is less defined, the aim isn’t to “fake curves” it’s to introduce shape through the clothes.

What works well:

• Necklines: square, scoop, soft V, open collars

• Sleeves: cap sleeves, gentle puff, rolled cuffs

• Tops: wrap styles, ribbed knits, peplum, visible seams or darts

• Bottoms: straight leg, wide leg, pleated trousers

• Dresses: wrap, belted shirt dresses

• Outerwear: cropped jackets, belted coats, tailored blazers

Why it works
Seams, belts, layering, and texture create visual breaks that add interest and dimension, without needing anything tight or restrictive.

Round / Oval Body Shape

Create length and movement

Comfort and flow are key. Clothes should skim and allow for movement.

What works well:

• Necklines: V, scoop, open collars

• Sleeves: straight or gently draped, 3/4 length

• Tops: wrap adjacent styles, asymmetrical hems, soft tailoring

• Bottoms: mid to high rise straight or wide leg trousers

• Dresses: wrap, empire seam, bias cut, column styles

• Outerwear: longline blazers, jackets worn open

Why it works:
Vertical lines and fluid fabrics create continuity through the body, so outfits flow rather than interrupted.

Hourglass Body Shape

Follow your natural lines

With balanced bust and hips and a defined waist, the easiest wins come from working with your shape, not disguising it.

What works well:

• Necklines: V, scoop, square, sweetheart

• Sleeves: set-in or softly fitted

• Tops: wrap styles, fitted knits, bodysuits

• Bottoms: high-waist straight or bootcut, A-line skirts

• Dresses: sheath, wrap, bias-cut, fit-and-flare

• Outerwear: belted or lightly nipped-in coats

Why it works:
When clothes follow your natural lines, outfits look intentional with very little effort.

Pear / Triangle Body Shape

Pull focus upward

If hips carry more volume than shoulders, balance comes from adding interest above the waist and keeping the lower half clean.

What works well:

• Necklines: boat, square, off-shoulder, wide scoop

• Sleeves: puff, cap, shoulder detail

• Tops: lighter colours, texture, pattern, structure

• Bottoms: straight, wide leg, A line skirts

• Dresses: fit and flare, wrap with shoulder detail

• Outerwear: cropped jackets, structured blazers

Why it works:
Visual weight shifts upward, creating balance without needing to hide or minimise anything.

Inverted Triangle / Heart Body Shape

Ground the silhouette

When shoulders or bust are broader than hips, grounding the look means letting the lower half carry more presence.

What works well:

• Necklines: V neck, scoop, open collar

• Sleeves: minimal structure, soft drape

• Tops: clean, simple, low-contrast

• Bottoms: wide leg trousers, pleats, A line skirts

• Dresses: A line, bias cut

• Outerwear: straight cut coats worn open

Welcome to TBC’s first Substack!! This is where we can go a bit deeper than elsewhere, talking properly about clothes, styling, and how things fit into real life, not just how they look on a screen. You might know us for our Edits, but this is where we expand on them, sharing clearer styling advice, more context, and pieces we think are worth investing in.

Body-led styling is something we’re excited to go deeper into here. Practical ways of dressing different shapes, proportions, and lifestyles, with an emphasis on what actually works day to day - across both women’s and men’s wardrobes. We’ll spend time on the thinking behind outfits: why something works and how to wear pieces in a way that feels natural rather than forced.

This is where we share longer styling pieces than you’ll see on Instagram, proper guides, considered takes on how to style specific items, and thoughtful ways of approaching trends without feeling overwhelmed. Alongside that, we curate shopping lists of the best pieces available, focusing on quality and how they fit into a real wardrobe.

Discovering and supporting new and smaller brands has always been part of TBC, and that continues here. We’ll share the brands we’re excited by, explain why we rate them, and show how they fit into a wider wardrobe rather than treating them as one-off moments. We’ll also touch on industry shifts and notes we think are worth paying attention to.

Most importantly, we want this to feel like an ongoing conversation. If there’s something you’d like us to cover - a piece you’re struggling to style, a trend you want unpacked, menswear you want more of, or a brand you think we should be looking at — tell us!
