How things are coming along

Hi ho!!

Have you been going out much? Not me. I’ve been staying home all the time.

As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, I’m kind of in the process of reconsidering how I write this thing. For the past couple of years, it has been a newsletter that I write by hand every week or two. Now it is a bunch of different confusing things.

Automated Calendar: All the bots, now slightly more personal!!

I’ve got the automated calendar running, which seems to be running pretty well. Using AI tools to update itself, doing all the research that I used to do by hand. It’s pretty amazing how well the tools run. If you haven’t used AI tools for stuff like this, I really encourage you to try. Their capacity to do research in this case, to assemble the newsletter, and to keep track of things is pretty great. I built all the tools in Claude Code. I did not write any code myself.

I’ve also, since last week, built a few tools that add a bit more personal touches to the calendar. Some of the events have generic descriptions, but some of them have more personalized descriptions. Most of these are built up from past issues of the newsletter, but that seemed like a quick way to inject a bit more personality into them.

I’ve also added some star ratings that, in a pretty haphazard way, emphasize events that I think are noteworthy in some way.

Stupid Interfaces for you to love or hate!!

As it stands, Toronto Event Generator has three standard interfaces to the information, a calendar format, a newsletter format, and a map format that shows events sorted geographically

Each of these also has tags that let you choose the type of event you want to see more of.

Over the past few weeks, for reasons that I cannot explain to myself, I have been building a number of very, very impractical interfaces for the Toronto Event Generator.

HERE THEY ARE

INTERFACE #1 : THE SPHERE (The only one that works on phones)

This interface is a sphere that has a selection of some of the events. I don’t really know how it chooses which ones, but you can spin the sphere and click on individual events, and it takes you to the event information. Fun!

INTERFACE #2 : CYBER!!!

This one only works on your computer. To get the full use out of it, you have to allow it to use your camera and your microphone.

The camera tracks your hand motions, and you can operate a cyborg hand on your screen that you can use to pick up cards. It takes a little bit of a knack to get the hang of it, but you pick up cards by pinching them and dragging them around. You can open a card by pinching the link or by giving a thumbs-up gesture. You can close a card by pinching the Go Away box in the top-hand corner or by making a fist or thumbs-down gesture.

The microphone lets you name any arbitrary filter. You can say, for instance “Show me all the events related to board games”, or “Show me all the events related to cats” or anything you want. It uses AI to do those searches. I think you can also type the commands in directly, but that is not as much fun. You can also say “enhance” and it will zoom in more on a card. I put that in because I like saying “enhance” to a computer.

I think you can also just use it with a keyboard and mouse, but what is the fun of that?

Try the Cyber Interface

INTERFACE #3 : AWWW!!!!

I was worried that the cyber interface might feel too soulless for people, so I made this one, which is cuter.

You can walk around in a 3D space using standard game controls (WASD or arrows). There are individual little dudes holding signs, and each dude has a name. Each sign describes an event in the city. If you walk around, you can also find a little animated Misha dude. You can chat with him. It’s just like talking to me!

INTERFACE #4 : AVANT GARDE SOUND ART!!!

I went to Jenn’s really cool rationalist meet-up a few weeks ago, and someone on the Discord requested this!! I don’t know why. They wanted a sound-only interface where you could walk around in a dark space, primarily navigating by sound and moving toward individual announcements. I built this. It is extra good to use headphones on this. There are directional cues as to which way to walk to hear the event announcements.

(I don’t know who the recommending person was because they used their Discord alias. If you are the person who recommended this, let me know because I want to thank you!!)

EVENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR!!

Here are a few events to look out for in the coming weeks

The Viaduct Lecture Series: Sept 10, 17, and 24 [link]

This is as run by my friend Benjamin Parry, and The Toronto Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. I met Ben a couple of years ago, and he had this idea that he wanted to run this super ambitious lecture series. It seemed like a completely ridiculous idea, but within a few weeks he was running it, and it is amazing.

This is my favorite thing to go to in Toronto, I think. I just love the scene that Ben has put together. One of the things that I really love about it is that it is intentionally designed to see the lectures as a place to build community, as opposed to just a way to convey information. Ben has live music before the events and usually has free pizza afterwards. People hang around for a long time. It’s a really, really fun scene and probably my favorite casual place to hang out in Toronto. Ben’s profound optimism and passion and love for what he is doing is present in every component of the event. Also, I complain all the time, bitterly, about the lectures, and I am incredibly annoying about it. If you come, you can get a sense of what I’m really like.

The Trampoline Hall Lecture Series: Sept 15 Sept 14 [link]

This is the Barroom Non-Expert Lecture series that I have been hosting since before you were born. It’s really, really good. You should come check it out. It sells out insanely quickly, so act fast!

(UPDATE: to make it more annoying to get tickets to the show, I accidentally got the date wrong in the previous email. The show is on Monday, September 14th, not September 15th )

Birdhaus Turns Five: Sept 19 [link]

Birdhaus is a sex-forward kink space around Queen and Dufferin. They run incredibly cool events that are culturally really interesting. The people running it care deeply about community, self-expression, and everything good in the world. This is their fifth anniversary, and it is amazing that they have kept this thing running. Go and support them. There will be performances, there will be play, and there will be a really great time. If you have never been to a space like this, you might want to go check it out. It’s pretty intense and really fun.

EVENT REVIEW: Robin Hanson at Society Clubhouse [link]

I went to this a couple of weeks ago. Simon, who runs it, is someone I’ve just met once or twice, and he seems really great. Robin Hanson is the sort of person I think it would be cool to see more of in Toronto. He’s made fairly important contributions, I think, to the field of prediction markets and also to rationalism. It was very cool that Simon brought him here. (You can read about Simons’ Toronto Prediction Market Group here)

I have strong preferences about the design of events like these. If you want to learn about Robin Hanson’s ideas, he publishes extensively on the internet and in print, and has a podcast. I think this is the best way to actually learn his ideas. The reason I would want to go to an event like this is primarily to hang out with other people who want to go to an event like this, not specifically to listen to what Robin Hanson has to say.

The way the event was structured was that there were free snacks before, and then Robin Hanson talked for a long time. I would have liked it better if Robin Hanson talked for a short time and there were free snacks afterwards, encouraging people to hang out. I left early, because I had to get back to my kid, so I don’t know how it ended.

Easing gracefully into the singlularity

Look, I don’t like change any more than you do.

I mentioned in the newsletter a couple of days ago that after two years of running this thing, I’m feeling a little bit like I’ve trapped myself into a commitment that I’m not sure I want to continue with. Read what I wrote last time.

I’m going to do some experiments now.

And is over the next few weeks to mess around with things a bit, try some different experiments. Broadly, there are a couple of things I’m going to do.

Use more AI automation for research and organization.

The newsletter has always been pretty heavily AI-driven in terms of discovery of events, formatting of the newsletter, etc.

As AI tools have been getting better, I’ve been playing around with them more. It’s pretty amazing how powerful the tools are right now.

I have a more or less fully automated AI researcher that goes out and finds events. It does a fairly comprehensive job of keeping track of events that I know about. It has pretty good taste in finding new events that I don’t know about (AI has been my primary mechanism of new event discovery for a while). And it doesn’t make too many mistakes.

This is still a work in progress, but I’m sure it’ll get better.

Look for more opportunities for me to re-introduce a personal component into the newsletter.

What I really enjoyed about doing the newsletter over the past couple of years is putting my own personal voice into it. I think a lot of people enjoyed reading that too. The new version of the calendar is more informative but has less personal touch. My hope is to play around and whether in the coming weeks I can find ways to introduce more of my own voice into into the newsletter

This week’s experiment: the online calendar edition

Right now, you can click an online calendar version of the event generator.

It has a few cool features that you can play around with:

Much more comprehensive listings than the old newsletter: including a lot more events but still curated
You can use tags to search for different categories of events, music, comedy, kids, etc.
There are a couple of different views: a calendar view, and a list format
There is also a map view which lets you find events by location
If you’re a data type person, there’s a downloadable JSON to let you play with the data
A notable fact is that all of this was pretty easy to build. I don’t know anything at all, really, about coding. But this thing seems to work pretty well, and for now, at least, it seems to do a pretty good job of updating itself without any effort or supervision on my part. This seems very cool to me!
I’ll likely add more features as I go, both to make the site feel more useful and more personal.

MISHA, WHY ARE YOU ASKING THIS??

1) I am bored tonight and a little lonely, and I would like some encouragement.

2) I have been rethinking what I want to do with a newsletter, and could use some input (see below):

I’ve been running this newsletter for a little under two years. It’s been a really fun project for me and went in all sorts of directions that I did not anticipate. Notably, it has served more as more of a first-person diary of who I am and what I’m interested in than I had expected, and that’s been a real pleasure. I think it’s also brought a lot of value to people in the city.

I’m trying to decide what to do next. I feel some tension between a couple of things.

a) I really like doing the writing, and I like expressing myself in the world in this way.

b) After two years, I’m starting to find the obligation of doing this on a regular basis a little bit tiring.

c) A problem with the way a newsletter goes is that everything is handwritten. It ends up restricting how much stuff I can list. There are lots of great events that I list just because I don’t want to have to write up clever descriptions for every single item. I’ve been playing around with some AI-based tools to build a curated calendar. I think the calendar could be much more informative than the hand-written newsletter. But I also think the personal voice of the newsletter adds some value.

I’m going to take a week or two off from doing the handwritten newsletter, while I decide what to do next.

In the next day or two, I will send a more stripped-down, functional version of the newsletter so that you don’t have to just sit at home, confused about what to do.

A day or two after that, I will share the more full featured calendar that I’ve been working on.

My hope is to find a way to continue to do some personal writing here while also being able to provide a curated listing resource that is more comprehensive and helpful. I think I want to take a couple weeks to think about how to best do this.

In the meantime here is my ask for you:

Last summer, I was at Edge Esmeralda which is a sort of weird meetup for, among other people, community builders. The last day we had this session where everybody was talking about how they could get more of the sort of feelings of connection that they had there when they went back home.

This one guy, this very sweet guy, got increasingly irritated with the conversation. He was this incredibly nice, sweet guy who I’d known throughout the event. At a certain point, he got really frustrated at everyone, and he kind of burst out.

“You guys all think that you’re going to solve your loneliness by creating the right event or running the right workshop or creating the right pop-up city. What you actually have to do is OPEN YOUR HEART.” He was visibly angry.

He told us a story about how he’d moved to a new city, and someone suggested that he phone someone. He phoned that person and just decided within five minutes of the phone call that he would make that person his best friend, and they have been best friends ever since.

It was a very powerful message and one I will choose to continue to ignore.

Run by Billy, my 11-year-old (with help from me). We have done this every summer for several years running now. In past years, it has been one day only, but this year it is two days only, unless we add another day, in which case it will be three days only.

The reason we are adding more days is because it is so very, very, very good. Popular flavors include lemonade and watermelon. Less popular flavors include hot dog, water, and ketchup. PB&J is surprisingly good!! New additions this year: queso and ghost pepper!!

A casual, social puzzle solving event which happens at bars/pubs on the second Tuesday of every month in multiple cities around the world. You have to solve a puzzle to figure out where it is.

Did you know that a really fun and interesting way to meet and connect with other people is to tie them up and have them tie you up? You did not? Well, you’re in for a treat!

Tifereth is a serious, no kidding, world-class ropes expert, practitioner, and teacher. For the first hour of the event, she will teach you basic rope techniques. For the second half of the event, I, Misha Glouberman, will run a facilitated social thing where you get to connect with other people and play around with rope with them.

A thing I want to emphasize is stuff like this can be really fun and interesting, even if you don’t think of yourself as someone who is “into” ropes.

Also if you want you can come to just the mixer and not come to the class although really both are great. IF THE CLASS SELLS OUT YOU CAN STILL COME TO THE MIXER

Environment Canada is saying there is a substantial chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. My understanding is that if you get hit by lightning while blowing bubbles, it can lead to a Freaky- Friday-style body swap situation, and Billy and I don’t want this to happen again.

This is a clothing and book swap. Apparently, they have come up with an innovation: Instead of swapping directly with people, there is a token system. You receive tokens for each item and you can swap the tokens for other items. This seems like a great idea - using a separate medium of exchange, instead of direct barter. I can see it really catching on, especially if the tokens can also be used as a unit of account and store of value. Remember that they invented it right here in Toronto.

May 8: Jazz Night at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada [link]

OMG I love this event. You get to go to the Aquarium, which is a really fun place. The drinks are surprisingly cheap. The whole vibe is super confusing and great: some people are dressed up like grown-ups going to a jazz club. Some people are dressed up like they are going clubbing.

But also, they don’t close down the aquarium in between the regular aquarium day and the jazz night.. So some people are still just exhausted parents there with their toddlers

Also the food they have available is the same food they have available normally at the aquarium, so you can get like a seven dollar hot dog or a really shitty stale pretzel.

None of this captures the magic of the event. It is seriously great in a way that I cannot quite explain.

Some time a long time ago I was having a conversation with Josh, the owner of the very excellent Danu Social House. And I suggested they would be great if they had a night that was just sort of a house party. And that if they did that I would love it and I would come by all the time. And they did it and I think it is really great and I pretty much never go. This is what it’s like to be friends with me.

This happens every year, I’ve gone a couple of times with my kid Billy and we always have a really fun time. It’s sort of like a great big science fair put on by U of T students, with a street festival component.

(I have a lot of opinions on the subject of despair and climate. Here is a conversation I had on my friend Spencer Greenberg’s excellent Clearer Thinking podcast a couple of years ago. My general take is: Climate is definitely something people should be worried about, and many people are not worried enough about it, but also it seems that many people are maybe more worried about it than the evidence suggests is appropriate, and that the whole issue is so politically fraught, it’s hard for a layperson to get an accurate sense of the magnitude of the problem. I kept trying to write this up into a substack article, but every time I try, I get stuck partly by the hugeness of the topic, but mostly because I think it will make everybody hate me. You can read a very outdated summary of my thoughts from a talk I did at a conference here.)

But also, they don’t close down the aquarium in between the regular aquarium day and the jazz night.. So some people are still just exhausted parents there with their toddlers

Also the food they have available is the same food they have available normally at the aquarium, so you can get like a seven dollar hot dog or a really shitty stale pretzel.

None of this captures the magic of the event. It is seriously great in a way that I cannot quite explain.

At Birdhaus! Did you know that a really fun and interesting way to meet and connect with other people is to tie them up and have them tie you up? You did not? Well, you’re in for a treat!

Tifereth is a serious, no kidding, world-class Shibari expert, practitioner, and teacher. For the first hour of the event, she will teach you basic bondage techniques. For the second half of the event, I, Misha Glouberman, will run a facilitated social thing where you get to connect with other people and play around with rope with them.

Because I am very good at this sort of thing, it will be cool and fun and not awkward and weird. Then people hang out afterwards. We’ve done a couple of these and they have been really, really great. A thing I want to emphasize is stuff like this can be really fun and interesting, even if you don’t think of yourself as someone who is “into” ropes.

Also if you want you can come to just the mixer and not come to the class although really both are great.

There is a hide-and-seek game and a silent disco and a comedy show. Do they think the game and the disco are one part? Are disco and comedy one part? Is the hide-and-seek game one part, and the silent disco is another part, and the comedy show not a part at all? The organizers refuse to simply cleave reality at its joints, and for this I respect them.

I had some part in starting this thing and it was a long time ago and I don’t quite remember it. Josh is the owner of Danu Social House. And I am a random dude who goes out a lot and has too many strong opinions about how parties should be. And somehow Josh and I landed on the idea that every bar in Toronto would be better if we just decided that instead of it was a bar, it was a house party. And I guess we sort of hyperstitioned that sense to existence. I think the last time I was there, this woman from Munich had a plastic box where people could drop in facts about themselves and exchange them with each other, and I thought it was an organized activity, but it turned out that she had just shown up and started doing this. The point is that this is the sort of excellent person you can expect to meet here.
