That was my introduction. By the time I was in grade school, the more common slur had evolved to “faggot” or the more succinct “fag”, but queer was still in occasional use. It wasn’t a mild adjective meaning “different.” It meant there was something wrong with you, shameful. It ranked with up there with “nigger” and “kike” and “wet back.” Words like “Polack” were reserved for lesser derision. It was something you did not want to be because if you were, you were damaged and disgusting, something that needed to be expelled. It was in every way the speech of hate, only made worse when it was something you secretly knew you were but could deny (ultimately fooling no one). It was a word that twisted you into denying yourself.

Reclaiming began in the 1970s, trying to strip away the stigma of the word, but it wasn’t until the 1980s and early 1990s that reclaiming began in earnest. Queer Nation introduced chants at gay pride marches: “We’re here! We’re Queer! Get used to it!” I chanted, but inside I cringed. The word was so viscerally connected to hate, I would never be able to wear its moniker.

I remember an episode of The Jeffersons. Lionel, George’s son’s, confront one of his father’s friends for calling himself a “negro.” “We’re black” he admonished. The friend pulls him up short and says, “You have no idea how hard I fought to be called a negro. Don’t you tell me what to call myself.” I am gay. I paid for that identity with the lives of hundreds of friends and acquaintances who died agonizing deaths from tropical diseases and rare cancers doctors didn’t know how to treat. I paid for that identity with slurs and discrimination that I did not stand up to, and eventually found the courage to oppose. I paid for that with relationships I so wanted to but did not pursue because the object of my affection was a man.

Queer also stands in opposition to the vision and world I have fought so hard to achieve. I wanted people to see me as the same, not different. Queer is different. Queer is strange. It is alien. Other. Not like exceptional, which is different in a good way. I wanted to live in a community where being gay just didn’t matter. I DO live in a community where being gay just doesn’t matter. Decades of climbing uphill, I now stand on the top of the mountain. I don’t want to climb back down. I am gay and a man and tall and an executive and a cook, and none of those has any negative connotation. Gay has no special valence. It is what I wanted.

I have no illusion that the Q will be stripped from LQBTQ+. The younger generation has embraced it. They don’t have my history with the word. I can hold that it’s meaning has evolved and that I am the dinosaur in this scenario. But I worry that this generation also embraces queer AS different, and more, as a choice. If it is a choice, then it can be unchosen. If it’s a choice, then conversion therapy is a viable option. It was only by establishing that we were “born this way”, could not be changed, that we won acceptance and equality.

I fear some of the current backlash against transgender is the direct result of this. “Gender is a fluid choice?” the conservatives ask. “Awesome - then choose to be what’s written on your birth certificate!” I agree with the idea that we shouldn’t be ruled by gender norms, but how many calls did I get from friends whose kids announced at the dinner table that they were non-binary and must now be addressed as “they,” asking me what do. I knew those kids. It was not difficult to distinguish the few who were truly trans from those jumping on a trend, for whom “they” got stale pretty quickly. The former I counseled parents to support, the latter I advised simply to wait it out. When queer becomes a choice to be different, we lose what was our most valuable ally in this long-fought war. The choice is to come out, not to be who we were born to be.

I’m a 63-year-old gay man. Thirty-six years ago I came out and proudly said: I am gay.

I am gay. I am not queer.

Our children die in our schools, 288 school shootings this year alone, and we do nothing about gun control.

We have decided not to protect children’s health with vaccines, or basic medical care (if they’re poor).

We turn a blind eye to those who sexually abuse and exploit children, as long as they have wealth and political power.

We allow child labor again, blatant economic exploitation.

We separate kids from their parents and put them in cages. We fly them to foreign countries without parental consent or supervision or any basic protection and our leaders do it with sadistic glee.

We allow unfettered toxic internet use despite a mountain of evidence of the harm it is doing.

I could go on.

Who ARE we, as a nation? Seriously, who the fuck are we that we have no concern for the welfare of children?

A country without a soul.

Except, they showed up on January 6th. And they had guns. And they invaded the Capital and almost succeeded in overthrowing the government with support and direction from Donald Trump. They were stopped when real soldiers stepped in and cried when they were brought to justice. And I thought it was over. I slept for four years confident that they had been checked by a strong and functioning government.

But now they’ve been pardoned. And they’re being hired by the tens of thousands, given guns and masks and federal authority. Now they ARE the government and are being directed to take over democratic-led cities with Trump barely bothering to make an excuse because he no longer has to.

For the first time I am hearing from my side, the blue side, that to save democracy, we need armed resistance against a fascist government. That there is a coming civil war. When Trump says “A lot of people are saying, maybe we like a dictator” he means it and he is right and he has armed those people and given them authority and marching orders.

My friends are buying guns. Not delusional rural fringe survivalists but doctors and lawyers, mainstream Democrats taking to gun ranges to practice. I have a van lettered on the side with “Hate is Not a Napa Value” that I park in front of a home rhat posts eight foot signs decrying Jews and niggers and faggots, blatant hate speech. The tires have been slashed, the van defaced. My rabbi and the local police have told me I need to buy a gun, that I am a visible target in my community and an idealistic fool for not owning one.

In the last few weeks friends have gone to physically block ICE actions, asking that I please call if I don’t hear from them in 24 hours. It is not a joke. It is resistance. If it isn’t armed resistance now (and I fear it may be), it soon will be.

I’ve never held a gun, much less fired one. I was the kid picked last in gym class. I’m not going to magically become a marksman at age 62. But we are a country armed to the teeth, deeply divided, with a mad King George looking to make a come back as he holds a match to the powder keg. On Substack I get dozens of invocations each day to “fight.” I thought that meant to attend protests and write letters, but more and more it is an explicit call for something else.

What will I do when the tanks and hummers roll into San Francisco, as Trump has promised will happen? He wants the confrontation. He wants soldiers to spill American blood on American streets. It’s a necessary step to consolidating power. Do I watch from the comfort of my wraparound porch, assuaging my fear and anger with an aged Cabernet? Do I bring a gun into my home (a thought I loath, having lost a husband who took a gun to his own head)? Do I accept the invitation of friends to the gun range to become, if not a good shot, a better shot? If I do, do I wait for the soldiers to come to Napa, or do I bring the fight to San Francisco when it is invaded? Or do I uproot myself from a community I deeply love, flee to live my twilight years abroad where Democracy still exists (for now)?

It’s happening. It is a choice I am now certain that I will have to make. And it is agonizing.

My favorite holiday is Pesach, also known as Passover. It is the Jewish celebration during which we remember being freed from slavery in Egypt. We spend an entire meal (or two) thinking about and discussing what slavery means in the broadest sense, to free ourselves from bonds and be grateful for and celebrate freedom. It is the meal at which Jesus told his followers to “take this bread and eat it.” Hebrews were freed from slavery some 3500 years ago, yet each year we set aside a day to remember and to say “never again!”

America was born of the original sin of slavery. We subjugated black men and women and children into forced labor. They were beaten. They were raped and forced to bear children. They could be killed with impunity. Free black men could be kidnapped and enslaved (read Twelve Years a Slave). It was horror beyond what can be expressed with words, and 150 years is not sufficient time to forget. There may not be such a thing as sufficient time to forget.

The effects of slavery did not end with the emancipation proclamation. We simply found new ways to enslave. The south always used prisons to keep black men in forced labor, the shackles of the chain gang replacing the shackles of the white plantation. And I’m not talking ancient history. We made marijuana illegal and built for-profit prisons where mostly black men convicted of minor drug offenses could be forced to work for essentially nothing. Those prisons still exist. We found myriad ways to keep black men and women oppressed, from lynchings to red-lining, from barring them in college admissions and country clubs to open workplace discrimination. We used enforced poverty to continue generating a cheap labor force because “the downtrodden” will work for pennies on the dollar in order to eat.

Donald Trump discriminated against blacks in housing in New York. He falsely accused the Central Park Five long after they were exonerated. The Obama birther lies are racism, pure and simple. Why does he want to eliminate teaching the history of slavery? Because that’s how people learn. That’s how people put a stop to injustice. Rip slavery from the Smithsonian, from textbooks and history curricula, or worse, white wash it with stories about the “good slave owners”, and you blind people to not only what happened but what is still happening in America.

There were no good slave owners because… they were SLAVE owners. They owned human beings and used them as forced labor. That is evil. Period. End of story. Whether their slave quarters or clothes or food were nicer than some other slaves is beyond relevance because THEY WERE SLAVES.

There is a stain on the American soul, a black original sin that Donald Trump wants to whitewash, or better yet, forget entirely. He is not alone. Texas Senate Bill 3 and House Bill 3979 would make it illegal to teach something that might make a student feel guilt or discomfort based on their race. Whites enslaved blacks and you feel bad about that? Arrest the teacher! Well let me tell you, as a Jewish man: guilt is a good and necessary emotion! Guilt and shame and embarrassment are the emotions that stop us from doing bad things again. You know who doesn’t feel guilty? Psychopaths. They hurt people and feel no guilt about it. Greed is not good, but guilt is, and good people feel guilty about hurting others, motivating them to not do that again and, better yet, to make amends.

Today’s anti-immigrant zeitgeist is about  extending racism to the lighter end of the color pallet. ICE is detaining people based on nothing more skin color that is darker than white. And for-profit prisons in the south that went out of business because they couldn’t arrest enough black men anymore are being turned into… you guessed it… ICE centers. Want to guess what those immigrants will be forced to do?

It took too long to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. On Juneteenth this year, Trump announced that there were too many federal holidays and they cost businesses billions of dollars. You know what’s coming. What we need is the American equivalent of Pesach, where every year we remember how horrible slavery was, we confess our national sin, and we pledge to make amends and NEVER do it again. Blacks can celebrate freedom, and if whites feel some guilt, GOOD! It means you’re not a psychopath.

Next year, In Washington, DC!

I feel that right now, in my very soul, as I wake to my nightly 3:00 AM “what did Trump do today” mid-phase insomnia. Fifty years ago I was 13 and celebrating America’s bicentennial, spending my saved allowance to put small flags all along our front lawn. I knew my country. We’d put a man on the moon. Our pointless war in Vietnam was over. A corrupt President was removed from office. Napa wines beat Bordeaux wines and Chris Evert-Lloyd won Wimbledon. Our nation was full of hope, the beacon of freedom and democracy for the world, and I was bursting with a 13-year-old’s pride.

Today we have federal troops in hummers in Los Angeles and the Capital. We’ve built our first concentration camp. We have a convicted felon, rapist and consumer of child sex trafficking in the White House, an observable psychopath, with nearly half the nation applauding as he ransacks the economy and our institutions on an endless vengeance tour. Other nations oscillate between fear and mockery, watching as we tumble from the seat of admiration and power we once held as they chart a new world order without us.

I realize I have never known my country, and I am rocked to the very bottom of my soul. I didn’t know that people of color feared for their lives when pulled over by the police. I didn’t know that we filled southern for-profit-prisons with black slave labor. I thought we were finally conquering racism and homophobia and misogyny, achieving a country where truly everyone was created equal. I believed in the balance of power and the fourth estate and the social contract and academic freedom.

I now know those things are as real as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Leprechauns. Were they ever real, or just comforting illusions? Oligarchs own and twist our media and social media, poisoning our national consciousness. There is no line in the sand left to be crossed. People say “fight!” Fight for what? Our law firms and universities and news outlets and Congress and SCOTUS have all bent the knee.

No, I’ve never truly known my country. We didn’t really win the Civil War, the south just played the long game. I don’t see how we save ourselves from ourselves. We got what we elected. We knew who he was and what he would do  and we chose him and nearly half the populace continues to approve. With one to two decades left in my life, do I want to stand in the ruins and watch as my human rights as a gay man are stripped away? The right idealizes a 1950s that never was. How am I different, holding on to ideals like the social contract that are no less idyllic illusions than the black-and-white episodes of Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best?

First, psychopathy is not a medical or psychological diagnosis. Diagnoses are made using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD 10) or the The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).

The diagnosis relating to psychopathy is labeled Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). The DSM has evolved over time to define psychological disorders in concrete behavioral terms, especially those impeding ability to function socially and occupationally.

ASPD is currently defined as someone at least 18 years old who had evidence of conduct disorder starting before age 15 and exhibits at least 3 of the following;

1. Repeatedly performs acts that lead to arrest.

2. Frequently lies or cons others for personal gain or pleasure.

3. Acts spontaneously without forethought.

4. Engages in repeated physical fights or assaults.

5. Takes part in dangerous activities without concern for consequences.

6. Regularly fails to maintain steady work or meet financial obligations.

7. Shows indifference to or justifies having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from someone else.

Professional rules of conduct prohibit a healthcare provider from making a diagnosis by proximate, with directly interacting with someone to assess. But one can certainly point out observable behaviors consistent with diagnostic criteria.

Trump has made it a point of obfuscating his historical records. We do know that at age 13, his father transferred him from Kew-Forest School to the New York Military Academy. While we don’t have access to school records, numerous classmates have reported Trump had behavioral issues and frequent detentions.

Trump was arrested and convicted of 34 felonies. The press has reported on his tens of thousands of lies. He has been barred from having a non-profit and paid $2 million for illegally using Trump Foundation funds. We know of repeated bankruptcies and failure to pay his contractors. There have been no public apologies or statements of remorse towards those he defrauded or harmed (think of the immigrant family separations).

Psychopathy is a psychological construct. There are survey instruments that reliably assess it. It is defined as

a lack of empathy and remorse and a disregard for societal moral norms with the following traits: 

• Charming and manipulative, exploiting others to get what they want. 

• Committing theft, fraud, or violence, and having a history of criminal activity. 

• Showing shallow emotional responses and lack conscience or guilt. 

• Behaving impulsively and taking risks. 

• Disrespecting and taking advantage of others, without concern for the pain caused

• Displaying grandiosity. 

• Refusing to accept responsibility for their actions

Here again, one can point to public behaviors consistent with these traits. The bankruptcies, failure to pay contractors, fraud and other convictions; constantly blaming Biden, Obama and others when his policies fail; name calling respected politicians and scientists; referring to himself with superlatives (king, Jesus Christ…).

So, while only a healthcare professional who has directly interacted with Trump can make the diagnosis of ASPD, one can certainly say that publicly observable behaviors are consistent with ASPD criteria and the concept of psychopathy.

Good leaders do not break laws. Good leaders have empathy. Good leaders do not act impulsively but think very carefully about the consequences of their actions on those they lead. And because of that, good leaders take responsibility when their actions adversely affect those they lead. This is why antisocial and psychopathic people individuals do not make good leaders when they do manage to take on business and political leadership roles.

CEO compensation is already obscenely bloated, but it is supposed to be consummate with performance. This is corrupt. A $29 billion payout for losing stockholders 1/3 of their value.

We MUST address the issue of corporate corruption or we doom ourselves to serving the US oligarchy.

Teenage boys can be cruel. Three classmates created a “fag of the year” award. They invited me to help design the certificate, as I was good at art. I’m not proud to admit this, but I did help. I knew it was wrong and mean. We were kicking someone already in pain. But I wanted to be one of the guys. We laughingly presented the certificate to Stephen at recess. He didn’t come back to class afterwards, or to school the next day.

Our teacher, Mrs. Mowery, sent the other three boys to the principal’s office, but as one of her favorite students she expressed her anger and disappointment to me directly. The last thing she said to me, holding my chin in her hand and looking me straight in the eye, was: “When Cain asked Adam ‘am I my brother’s keeper’, it wasn’t a rhetorical question. The answer is: yes.”

Mrs. Mowrey taught me that day that the fundamental question that defines us as human beings: am I my bother’s keeper? Yes or no? I think it is what divides democrats and republicans today. Am I my brother’s keeper? Democrats: yes. Republicans: every man for himself.

This question is the root of the social contract. We contribute towards the common good. When someone is either born disadvantaged or comes upon hard times, we are obligated to help them. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, sometimes bad things happen to bad people. It doesn’t matter. We help them. You like them, you help them. You dislike them, you help them. They look like you, you help. They look different, you help. Whether they think like you or not, you help.

The current administration has made clear: the social contract is cancelled. Your house burned down in a wildfire? Sorry, you live in a blue state, no help. One hundred people killed in a flood? Red state, here’s your check. They’re cutting food stamps and Medicaid for poor children. I guess after the lack of response to Sandy Hook, I shouldn’t be surprised that republicans are fine leaving children sick and hungry. The GBBB robs from the poor to give to the rich. Republicans are keepers… of their wealthy, white, straight brothers.

But like the treaties and laws that Trump rips up, he is blind to the ultimate consequences of his actions. Of course unemployment went up, with inflation to soon follow. Firing the statisticians and cooking the books won’t help when millions are unemployed, without employer-based healthcare or Medicaid or SNAP. What happens when you shred the social fabric? Well, we’re about to find out.

“Am I my brother’s keeper” is not a rhetorical question. The answer is: yes. I wish there had been a Mrs. Mowrey in Trump’s life.

They don’t even bother trying to hide the cover-up. In true Trump fashion, the crimes are all in plain sight. And it makes me sick.

Look, 15% tariffs are an economic disaster. Smoot-Hawley taught us that. And the Japanese and EU tariffs actually make many American products, like cars, cost more than their foreign-made competitors. How that helps American manufacturing is beyond me.

We’re on the leading edge of inflation. American manufacturing stockpiles of pre-tariff goods are beginning to run out. Trust me, this will be our winter of discontent.

I can’t control what’s happening in my state or in my country, but I can do something to improve the lives of those in my neighborhood and community. We all can. They say “politics is local.” So is kindness. ❤️

The government’s role is to serve them, with no expectations as to whether they can or will provide revenue.

Multiple times. All without expectation of reimbursement. Trump fails to understand the fundamentals of either government or business.

Trump’s one success has been in media and entertainment. Without The Apprentice, he would be living in poverty today. He found a target audience and a messaging platform of grievance, and he has been masterful at exploiting it. He runs government as if it were a television show. That is what he knows and has had success at. The fundamentals of media are impressions and ratings. His time and focus are on messaging and reviews and maintaining his core demographic.

But America is not American Idol. Our economics are not based on Nielsen ratings. And every television show has its run - cultural zeitgeists are by definition time-limited. There are no bankruptcy laws protecting a country that defaults on its debt. The damage done by Trump will last generations with little hope of America reclaiming its position in the world. Those who voted for him will reap the disaster that they have sown and blame everyone but themselves for it. And as we learned at the end of the Gilded Age, even billionaires come and go. Just ask the oligarchs of Russia and Hungary.

Larry, a black physician from LA, moved to Portugal in June. He’s had enough with racism and feared what would happen now that the military has invaded his city.

Angus and John saw both facism and the future demise of the American dollar making retirement here impossible. They took a job in London.

Justin, a hotel GM with dual Canadian citizenship feared being detained at the border for social media posts critical of Trump and took a job in the Turks and Caicos.

Oscar and Nate’s teenage son asked if German Nazis were misunderstood and if his biological father’s German heritage made him “really white”? They move their family to Valencia next week to protect their children from MAGA propaganda.

Robert and Brad, retired in the Catskills, are selling their house and moving to Mexico. They fear rising facism and believe their retirement dollars will go farther there in the face of rising US inflation.

Dori and Jim (not gay, but longtime friends) are selling their house and expect to land in Portugal later this year. They fear the rise of anti-semitism in the US.

Many other friends are making concrete escape plans as they see the successful elimination of protections for transgendered men and women, with Republicans stating that gay marriage and civil rights protections are next.

And me? I was just reading about how  Germany built its first concentration camps to house “undesirable migrants.” The US has already crossed that line. At what point does Trump label gays as “undesirable.”

On June 3rd, my lawyer in Toronto  submitted my application for a Canadian proof of citizenship certificate. She laid out the case that under Canadian law, I already qualify for citizenship through my mother and grandfather. The process generally takes 4 to 5 months (assuming the application is approved). Once we have that, I can sponsor Cody’s application for permanent residency. That typically takes a year.

Cody and I discussed: what if things get bad quickly? What if the military invades San Francisco? What if troops start firing on American citizens? What if gays start being detained by ICE? All are possible.

I asked my lawyer. She warned that requesting asylum could negatively affect an application for permanent residency for Cody. Also, there’s no going back when you get asylum. Do we have people who could send our family photos? Sell our house? Act as legal proxy?

There are alternatives. Cody works remotely. He could get a digital nomad visa. It’s good for 6 months, can be renewed, and can be obtained in as little as 2 weeks. He’s a biotech project manager, so he might be able to get a job, or qualify for Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program. Those take 6 months.

For now, we walk toward the border. We follow the process. But we also plan and prepare in the event that one day, with little warning, we may need to run.
