Everett Symposium will bring together business, industry and government leaders to examine the ethics of AI

Troy University will host the second-annual Terry and Barbara Everett Symposium on Emerging Technologies on Sept. 18 at the Dothan Campus.

The symposium will bring together representatives from business, industry, the military, law enforcement and higher education to explore developments in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and related technologies and their implications for organizations, the workforce and communities.

The day-long event is free to attend but registration is required and only a limited number of seats remain to attend.

‘Culture in Motion’ roadshow coming to TROY’s Rosa Parks Museum on Saturday, Sept. 5

Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum is partnering with Kwanza Jones, The Apollo Theater and the Jose Feliciano Foundation, and the Boost Bus to bring “Culture in Motion” Community Boost Block Party, a national roadshow uniting communities through arts and empowerment, to Montgomery on Sept. 5.

The free event will take place at the Rosa Parks Museum, 252 Montgomery St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The section of Montgomery Street will be blocked to traffic for this event, which will also include the 1950s era Montgomery City Bus and a Greyhound bus from the Freedom Rides Museum. Registration to attend the event is available online.

Beth Gibson’s connection to Troy began long before she became a Trojan. Her family moved to the community in the mid-1980s after her grandfather became president of Troy Bank & Trust.

Entering his 25th season as play-by-play announcer for Troy University Athletics, Barry McKnight fondly reflects on his early childhood in Palm Bay, Fla., when calling sports first piqued his interest.

"We lived right across the street from the big sportsplex in town," McKnight said. "The baseball field was 40 yards away, and I used to get foul balls in my front yard all the time.

"I played all the sports, but when I wasn't playing, they let me do the public address announcing."

Troy University mourns the loss of trustee, oldest living Marine Roy Drinkard

Troy University is remembering the service and commitment of longtime Trustee Roy Drinkard, who passed away on Sunday, Aug. 23, at the age of 106.

A World War II veteran, Drinkard was the oldest living United States Marine.

In April 2000, at almost 80 years old, Drinkard was appointed to the Troy University Board of Trustees by then-Governor Don Siegelman. He was reappointed twice, most recently in 2020 by Gov. Kay Ivey.

Funeral services are set for 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28 at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama. The service will be streamed live by the Cullman County Board of Education at CCBOE.tv.

Chancellor, Trustees announce revised leadership transition timeline

After 38 years leading Troy University, Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. will conclude his service as Chancellor on June 30, 2027, under a revised timeline designed to align the University’s leadership transition at the start of the 2027-2028 academic year.

Last year, Dr. Hawkins and the Troy University Board of Trustees announced he would serve as Chancellor through Dec. 31, 2027. Dr. Hawkins said the revised timeline will allow his successor to begin the new academic year at the beginning of the Fall semester.

Historic runs by both the TROY men's basketball and baseball programs in 2026 generated extraordinary brand recognition for TROY Athletics, Troy University and the Troy community, fueled by the programs' trip to March Madness, defeating Miami and Florida in the Gainesville Regional, the hosting of the Troy Super Regional and the first-ever appearance in the College World Series.

TROY philosophy professor travels to Tibet to study sacred Buddhist geography

Troy University Associate Professor of Philosophy & Religion Dr. Jay Holt Valentine traveled over the summer with a research team to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) of China to gather information on the history of the Jangter tradition, also known as the Northern Treasures Tradition, a branch of the Order of Ancients of Tibetan Buddhism.

During the trip the team focused on the tradition’s sacred geography, taking photos, making contacts at locations in the TAR and searching for additional literature.

What began as a small, competitive summer camp for six high school students in 2022 has grown into a statewide entrepreneurship experience designed to help Alabama youth develop confidence, creativity and business skills.

A free online leadership course offered by Troy University in 2020 planted a seed for Baytown, Texas resident Justin Ross Glover, and on July 24, that seed bloomed into a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Troy University’s first appearance in the College World Series continues to pay dividends for students, this time in the form of a $6,475 donation to the Trojan Pantry from Rocco’s Pizza & Cantina in Omaha, Nebraska.

Each year, Rocco’s hosts the College World Series Jell-O Shot Challenge, a fan-driven competition that has become a tradition during the tournament. Fans purchase Jell-O shots to support their teams, with proceeds benefiting food pantries in each participating school’s hometown and Omaha’s Food Bank for the Heartland.

SCOB alumna Jennifer Pelham found more than a finance degree as a student at TROY

When Jennifer Pelham arrived at TROY on a leadership scholarship, she found more than a place to earn a finance degree. She found a community that would shape her approach to leadership for years to come.

A graduate of Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, Pelham’s visit to TROY happened almost by chance. A high school friend invited her to tour campus while considering colleges. During the visit, she met Coach Larry Blakeney’s daughters and Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr.

“After the weekend it was clear TROY was the right place for me,” Pelham said.

Trombone Professor to present research at 2026 International Trombone Festival in Latvia

Dr. Jason Sulliman, Associate Professor of Trombone in the John M. Long School of Music, will represent Troy University at the 2026 International Trombone Festival in Riga, Latvia from July 29 to August 1.

At the festival, Sulliman will present his research on brass pedagogy, an area where he has become a respected voice within the international trombone community. In addition, he will perform a new work for trombone written by TROY Lecturer of Music Dr. Traci Mendel, adjudicate an international youth solo competition and lead a group warm-up for attendees.

More than 15 middle school students learned about good citizenship and American history during the annual Civic Heroes Camp hosted by Troy University’s Office of Civic Engagement from July 13-17.

At Civic Heroes summer camp, fourth through sixth grade campers become superheroes-in-training and build their own communities, run their cities and help their neighbors. Campers also participate in creative games, activities and civic lessons that teach about what it means to be a good citizen.

TROY, Miss America partner to offer scholarships to contest winners

Troy University is partnering with the Miss America Scholarship Foundation to provide undergraduate scholarships to local competition winners in Alabama and state winners who participate in the Miss America competition.

Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough, the founder and leading surgeon at McCollough Plastic Surgery, will deliver the keynote address to Troy University graduates during the summer commencement ceremony on July 24.

TROY professor’s Fulbright research preserves oral histories from pre-colonial Uganda

Since mid-April, Dr. Scott Nokes has travelled throughout Uganda collecting pre-colonial oral stories from storytellers as part of his research through a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant.

Nokes, professor of medieval literature in TROY’s English Department, arrived in Uganda in January with the plan to conduct his research for six months. However, he spent the first three months trying to obtain his research license. During those three months, he taught at his host school, Kyambogo University, developing future programs for TROY students in Uganda and laying the groundwork for his research.

Award recipients are given a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize, a lifetime membership to the national Milken Educator Network and an all-expenses-paid trip to D.C. for their formal recognition.

Sixteen local middle school students spent a week of their summer immersing themselves in the different aspects of STEM during the Girl Power STEM Camp hosted by Troy University.

Camp organizer Danielle Hudson started the camp five years ago for girls in 6^th-8^th grade in an effort to correct the “leaky pipeline” for women in STEM fields.

“Scientific literature says that middle school is the age where girls decide they don’t want to be in STEM anymore. Before middle school, girls and boys are neck and neck as far as interests, grades and what they want to pursue in life. Middle school is where we see the ‘leaky pipeline’ start. We need women in STEM, so one of the reasons I created this camp was to expose girls to all of the fields of STEM and how it’s connected to everyday life.”

TROY alumna earns Houston Symphony’s award for excellence in music education

Eun Sung Kim, a 2005 music education graduate, received the Houston Symphony’s Spec Charitable Foundation Award for Excellence in Music Education. She was honored during the symphony’s annual Salute to Educators performance on March 29.

Kim is a strings teacher and Magnet Coordinator for Carter Academy , which is part of the Aldine Independent School District (ISD) in Houston, Texas. Kim, who has spent her entire career teaching in the Aldine ISD, said the recognition means the world to her personally, but not for the reasons people might expect.

History student claims national championship for the Trojan Debate Team

Carmen Cruz, a sophomore history major from Madison, Alabama, won the National Online Forensics Championship on Friday, March 27. Cruz competed in five rounds to win and finish out the Trojan Debate Team’s 2025-2026 season.

Completing her first full season in competing with the Debate Team as vice president, Cruz said winning the national title meant a great deal to her, and that earning gold in the competition was exciting.

Summer deadline nears for Pathways to Progress Initiative at TROY

June 15 is the summer deadline to apply for the Pathways to Progress Initiative at Troy University, a program that provides financial support to adults seeking to advance from an associate to a bachelor’s degree.

Northwest Missouri State University President and TROY alumnus Dr. Lance Tatum will provide the keynote address at Spring Commencement, across two days of festivities.

Nearly 1,000 students are set to graduate in two commencement exercises on the Troy Campus. Commencement exercises for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering are set for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14 in Trojan Arena. Exercises for the College of Arts and Humanities, the Sorrell College of Business and the College of Health Sciences are set for 10 a.m. Friday, May 15 in the arena.

Two-day intensive bringing acclaimed international dancers to TROY

Troy University’s partnership with Italy’s Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta will now provide a new and exciting opportunity for dancers to learn from master performers and teachers from Europe and the United States through the TROY-DAP International Experience from July 31 through August 1.

For more than 10 years, dancers from TROY have traveled to Italy to participate in the Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta, the DAP Festival, a unique international festival that combines dance and music with visual arts. Design Professor named top creative educator in southeastern U.S.

Troy University Design Professor Chris Stagl will be awarded the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF’s) Donald G. Hileman Award, which recognizes a college educator as the best in creative advertising.

The nominees came from creative disciplines from AAF’s District 7, which includes colleges and universities in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi, with the AAF placing Stagl above all submitted educators from each of those states.

Troy University’s College of Health Sciences welcomed approximately 165 fifth-grade students from various schools across Pike County to its Health Day Camp, an interactive event designed to promote healthy habits and spark interest in health science-related careers.

The one-day camp, held on the Troy campus, featured hands-on learning stations focused on key topics including mental health, nutrition, hygiene, basic first aid, exercise, and safety. Over April 10-11, more than 90 students from universities across the South gathered in Troy University’s John Robert Lewis Hall for the 19th annual TROY MathFest, a free conference that enables undergraduate students to share their research.

The only undergraduate student math conference in Alabama, TROY MathFest was started in 2004 by Dr. Ken Roblee, College of Science and Engineering Assistant Dean and mathematics professor. The conference has been held every year except 2007-2009 and 2020.

TROY history student awarded Graduate Council Fellowship at Stony Brook University

Matilda Ziegler, a student in Troy University’s Department of History and Philosophy, has been awarded a Graduate Council Fellowship by Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, where she will begin PhD studies in environmental history in the fall.

The Graduate Council Fellowship is awarded to only 35 incoming graduate students at SBU each year and provides recipients with a full-tuition scholarship, an annual stipend, health insurance and other benefits.

Dr. Avington Medeiros, a lecturer of history at Troy University, has been awarded the Dr. Robert Kruckeberg Faculty Excellence Award, presented by the University’s Faculty Senate.

The award honors the memory of Dr. Robert Kruckeberg, an Associate Professor of History who passed away in December 2020 at the age of 43 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kruckerberg had been a member of the TROY faculty since 2012.

Award-winning novelist, Tom Franklin, and Beth Ann Fennelly, Poet Laureate of Mississippi from 2016-2021, received Troy University’s Hall-Waters Prize on Friday, April 17 at the Troy Campus.

The day began with Franklin and Fennelly meeting with Dr. Kirk Curnutt’s English senior seminar class for a discussion in the Lamar P. Higgins Ballrooms and responding to questions from TROY students. The award was presented during a luncheon at the International Arts Center.

From beef cattle to sports to physical fitness and weddings, students revealed their findings during the Sorrell College of Business Student Research Showcase on April 21 as part of Trojan Research Week.

“I discovered that you can depreciate beef cows as assets,” said Kearston Clancy, who along with Rachel Temples presented “Determination of Individual Tax Basis for Bulk Sale Cattle.” The project earned an “Excellence in Research” honor.
