opportunities for me to observe my thoughts.

My fearful thoughts.

And my loving thoughts.

There is a stark contrast between living mostly in solitude, as I had over the last two years, and being back out in the world, actively engaging with people in a new town and a spiritual community.

I’ve begun to notice that these two kinds of thoughts don’t seem to arise from the same place.

That realization has become increasingly clear over the past several weeks.

A recent episode of the Raj Materials gave me another way of understanding what I was already beginning to notice.

In A Course in Miracles, Jesus teaches that there are only two thought systems.

Each one is complete within itself.

One is the thought system of separation—the ego’s thought system—grounded in fear and guilt.

The other, the only one that is Real, is the thought system of God.

The thought system of Love.

Raj described these same two thought systems using a different set of words that immediately resonated with me.

He suggested we can think of the ego as the voice of memory, and the Holy Spirit as the Voice of Inspiration.

That landed with me.

What I am experiencing now is a growing awareness of the difference between living from the voice of memory—which almost always begins with something from the past—and listening to the Voice of Inspiration, which is only available when I become present.

When my awareness becomes absorbed in thinking, it usually begins with a memory of something or someone.

That memory quickly becomes a container in which my mind begins creating a movie.

It imagines what could happen.

Or what should happen.

Or...

“If this happens... then that will happen.”

The movie begins forecasting an event that hasn’t happened.

It writes a script.

It assigns motives.

It predicts an ending.

Apparently...

My ego is a prophet!

The interesting thing is that before long, it believes its own predictions.

Then it makes a judgment.

Usually in a fraction of a second.

And once it has judged the imaginary event, it will often go to great lengths defending that judgment.

That is where self-righteousness quietly enters.

Even though the entire event existed only in my imagination.

I’ve also noticed this same process when I’m listening to another person.

Someone begins speaking.

For a few moments I listen.

Then one familiar word or image triggers a memory.

Immediately my mind begins creating another movie.

It starts imagining where their story is going.

What they probably mean.

How I should respond.

Before long...

I’m no longer listening.

I’m preparing a reply.

My thinking mind rarely stays present for very long.

It returns to memory.

It begins giving meaning to what it thinks it’s hearing...

instead of simply hearing what is actually being said.

Have you ever heard someone say,

“They were such a good listener.”

“They didn’t interrupt me.”

“They were completely present with me.”

That person wasn’t just heard.

They experienced someone being fully present with them.

Presence.

One day it dawned on me that the very same principle applies to my relationship with the Holy Spirit.

If my thinking mind is busy talking...

it is demanding my attention.

I’m able to catch this pattern more often now.

I’m getting better at becoming the observer.

The moment I notice my thinking mind creating another movie...

or I catch myself ramping up the thinking machine...

I simply pause.

Instead of following the movie, I make a shift.

I’ve become more intentional about managing my thinking.

I’ve naturally become a much better listener.

There is simply less room now for my ego’s constant commentary.

When another movie starts playing, I often smile and remind myself,

“I’m just making stuff up.”

That simple reminder immediately softens the whole experience.

More and more of my awareness is now intentionally directed toward listening instead of thinking.

Toward Being instead of remembering.

Toward Presence instead of reaction.

It is this level of presence that allows me to hear the Voice of Inspiration.

I must become present.

I simply ignore what I once believed were my thoughts and turn within to my real Voice.

And when I do...

the Holy Spirit is available to answer my questions.

Having experienced the peace that comes from listening to His Voice instead of my ego’s constant commentary, I now find that I naturally prefer turning toward the Voice of Love rather than listening to the voice of fear.

I still go through a familiar process whenever I consciously join with the Holy Spirit.

Not because I have to.

But because it has become familiar.

Like a greeting I naturally repeat whenever a close friend calls me on the phone.

I pause.

I simply ask,

“Are You there?”

Sometimes I quietly recite one of the attunements the Guides have given us.

“Word, I Am Word.”

Or...

“I know Who I Am, in Truth.”

I feel a subtle excitement every time I consciously join in mind with the Holy Spirit.

The slightest pause in my mental activity immediately reminds me of His Presence.

Once I give my attention to His Voice...

Presence simply happens.

Without effort.

A smile comes across my face.

Sometimes I hear myself laughing out loud.

Almost at the same moment another part of me becomes emotional.

Sometimes tears begin to flow.

Not from sadness.

From gratitude.

Profound gratitude.

The Love of God simply moves through me.

It’s like standing in the ocean as a wave quietly washes over me.

For me, the Voice of Inspiration can only be experienced while I am being present.

I don’t have to stop the movie.

I simply stop watching it.

It may still be playing somewhere in the background...

but I’m having a conversation.

Listening has quietly become one of my favorite things to do.

There is no story to manage.

There is only awareness.

Only Being.

Jesus refers to this as the Holy Instant.

Not an instant in time.

To me...

It feels like time outside of time.

As the Holy Spirit says through the Guides,

“Behold, I make all things new.”

And so it is.

What then is it actually like to listen to the Holy Spirit?

Compared to what I experienced before I discovered there was another way of listening...

what has actually changed?

To be continued...
