Natural hair dye is imprecise in the best possible way and its results depend on your starting hair color, the mineral content of your water, the freshness of your botanicals, and the time you give the dye to settle in. In other words, it can go really good or not as good. I do think a good hair stylist knows these things as well. Some even use natural products now! Times have changed from the ammonia of the nineties!

Humans have colored hair for thousands of years. Henna appears in Egyptian papyri, in ancient Ayurvedic texts, in the souks of medieval Persia. Walnut husks stained the scalps of Roman women. Chamomile brightened hair in European herb gardens long before it was sold in tea bags.

How Plant Dyes Work

Most plant-based colorants work through one of two mechanisms: direct pigment deposition or tannin bonding. Henna, indigo, and cassia contain dye molecules that bind directly to the keratin proteins in the hair shaft, creating lasting color without a chemical developer. Other plant dyes, like walnut and black tea, deposit tannins that coat and slightly penetrate the cuticle, adding depth and tone fading gracefully over weeks.

Neither category uses hydrogen peroxide or ammonia to strip the hair first. This means natural dyes cannot lighten they can only add tone over what already exists. Blonde hair will show color most dramatically. Dark hair may see only subtle warmth or sheen.

The Botanical Palette

Henna (Lawsonia inermis)

The queen of natural hair dye. Lawsone binds tightly to keratin, imparting copper-to-auburn tones. On dark hair it deepens warmth; on light hair it glows red-orange. Always use body-art quality (BAQ) powder, and avoid “black henna,” which is an unrelated chemical compound.

Result: Copper · Auburn · Red-Orange

Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria)

Alone, indigo gives a blue-black or slate tone. Layered over henna, it produces true brown to deep black depending on proportions. The dual-process method: henna first, indigo second, has been used in South Asian and Middle Eastern traditions for centuries.

Result: Brown · Dark Brown · Near-Black

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)

The green husks contain juglone, a potent tannin-rich compound that stains a warm, deep brown. A decoction of the hulls adds beautiful dimension to brunette hair. Glove up! juglone stains skin aggressively.

Result: Warm Brown · Dark Mahogany

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

A gentle brightener for blonde and light brown hair. Apigenin builds sun-kissed warmth over repeated use, especially combined with lemon juice and sunlight. Make a strong infusion of dried flowers and use as​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ a final rinse after shampooing. I do this now to brighten my hair~

AN APPALACHIAN NOTE

The forests of Appalachia are, among other things, a dyer’s larder.

Black walnut husks so abundant in autumn that many homesteads had permanent walnut-stain rings in their kitchen sinks from the harvest were used by generations of mountain women to darken hair, touch up roots, and deepen color. My hair was always so dark in spots!

Pokeberry (Phytolacca americana) has a long folk history as a textile dye and occasional cosmetic colorant, though caution is warranted given its phytotoxicity.

Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) and black-eyed Susan were mordanted with alum for golden textile dyes, and these same principles were applied to hair.

Natural does not always mean without consequence. If you have previously used synthetic chemical hair dye, particularly those containing PPD (p-phenylenediamine), do a strand test before applying henna to your full head chemical-to-henna transitions can occasionally cause unexpected reactions in the hair structure. Indigo can be drying for some hair types; follow with a deep conditioning treatment. And never apply “black henna” products, these contain para-phenylenediamine, a synthetic chemical with a real risk of allergic reaction, despite the marketing language.

EMBRACING THE IMPERFECT

Part of what makes plant dye so different from its synthetic counterparts is that it does not produce a uniform, perfectly even result and this is not a flaw but a feature. The way walnut builds in warm patches where the hair is most porous, the copper shimmer henna leaves at the ends of dark brown hair, the golden halo chamomile leaves in the light, these are not errors. They allow for a natural look to hair (especially if you are good at the application!). There is also the matter of relationship: when you work with plant dye regularly, you begin to know your hair differently. You notice its porosity, its mineral memory, the way it takes color in summer versus winter. You develop a practice. It is like tending a garden and learning a trade. The only color I use now is chamomile tea. The easiest of the bunch. It is totally ok to leave these colors to your experts as well. Regardless, this is fun herbal knowledge to know about.

The young Allison would jump on her bike, friends pedaling furiously alongside, each of us balanced on our banana bicycle seats while racing into the town center. Town to us consisted of a library, bank, two grocery stores, clothing store, hardware store, and a pharmacy. Oh, and the local Aaron’s Ark restaurant where root beer floats were a must! As small as this town was, there probably were other businesses, but these particular stores were the center of mine and my friend’s lives, and forever emblazoned in my memories.

As kids we could ditch our bikes on any street corner and explore the wonders. The library was a must, and many books would be checked out and returned after devouring each word in the crook of an old apple tree. Depositing real dollars into the bank from babysitting or selling cherries was a whole trip in itself. The clothing store was so big we would often run in and then out, afraid to get lost! The hardware store is where we could get our rockets and say hello to Amy’s mom.

But for fancy gifts and shiny objects we went to the pharmacy. The shelves at the pharmacy were always full of jewelry, crystal light catchers, coloring books, cards for our pen pals, candy, makeup, and numerous pharmacy delights continuing up and down the studied aisles.

Little did I know how much our town pharmacist knew about me then. Although I was not on medication, he knew my parents, where I lived, and probably every time our grubby fingers were twisting the sparkling light catchers.

I only know because as an adult when I was contemplating a move back west, he offered me a job after our local town doctor mentioned me in a conversation. He remembered me as a child and because of this memory he knew I would be a good pharmacist. My heart swelled that day.

I was fortunate to have graduated pharmacy to see the very last years of the pharmacy empire. The decline and fall of pharmacy began in the 1800s with the passing of each government law. Each law degraded the autonomy of pharmacy as a component of healing. The safety of our patients is important, but when we give our free will healing away for safety, we all suffer.

Then came a different over site. The Pharmacy Benefits Managers (PBMs). This degraded our community relationships as this industry has directed medication and care to pharmacies and pharmacists far from our local care team, Not to mention directed the medicine that they can take.

Now I will argue that technology is further degrading our pharmacist to patient care model. No longer does a doctor write a prescription that is brought into the pharmacy. No longer do we know the physician’s handwriting, the physician phone number for questions, nor do we enjoy the time with the patient upon drop off.

Safety is important, but how much autonomy of our medical freedom is exchanged for this currency.

I see the result. No longer will the town pharmacist know the adult child. No longer will a pharmacist understand the tactile component of receiving a prescription. No longer will the local healers heal.

Here are seven starburst blooms rooted in herbal traditions ~ plants that look like they’re mid-celebration and carry real medicine underneath the show.

Bee Balm (Monarda didyma)

Nothing says fireworks quite like bee balm. Its shaggy red or purple blossoms shoot outward in every direction, tousled like they’ve just gone off. It grows wild along mountain streams, is a wonderful addition to home gardens, and has long been steeped as a tea for sore throats and chest colds. This is not a surprise, since it’s loaded with thymol, the same compound that gives oregano its bite. Touch the stem and you will feel a familiar square shape, you are feeling the mint family. Also known as Oswego tea, it is a wonderful minty citrus flavor.

Elderflower (Sambucus canadensis)

Come early summer, elder bushes along the roadside throw up flat white bursts of tiny blossoms, each umbel a quiet firework frozen mid-air. Herbal tradition holds elder close. Flowers are steeped for fever and colds, berries cooked into syrup for the immune support. To me elderberry is a plant that marks the turning of the season, blooming right as the real fireworks season begins. I always know it is summer and look forward to the sweet syrup from the flowers added to a bubbly summer drink. (see elderflower article)

Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)

The coneflower’s spiky orange-brown center, ringed by petals that droop backward like they’re caught in an updraft, is a recognizable firework shape! Echinacea is also one of the most trusted immune herbs to come out of the American landscape, used by Indigenous peoples long before European settlers arrived, and carried into current herbal practice as a go-to for warding off the first signs of a cold. This herb carries a bitter taste which can also cause some people to feel a tingle. It is often in combination with a citrus or mint flavor to calm the bitter taste.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow throws flat, lacy clusters of white with dozens of tiny flowers packed into one starburst head. There are hybrid yarrows of red, pink, orange, and deep yellow. It may be the oldest medicine on this list, used for centuries to stop bleeding, break fevers, and calm the body after injury. Watch for it growing wild in nearly every pasture and roadside ditch, humble looking but fierce in its usefulness. Strong herbs often carry a bitter taste and yarrow embodies this.

Milkweed (Asclepias)

Milkweed’s pink and orange umbels burst outward in perfect symmetry; a firework built for pollinators. Milkweed has a place in historical medicine and was called pleurisy root. The root was used to relieve lung inflammation. It is many of my old medical books and we also have seen it together on our apothecary field trips. Be mindful, it carries real toxicity if handled without knowledge. Even so, it earns its place here as an ecological cornerstone, feeding monarch butterflies on their long migration through these hills. Sometimes a plant’s medicine is simply what it gives back to the land around it.

Ramps and Wild Allium

And then there’s the allium. Ramps and wild allium send up round, starburst globes of tiny flowers, kin to the pungent greens dug from the hillside each spring. The whole allium family carries antimicrobial and cardiovascular benefits, and in Appalachia, ramps aren’t just medicine, they’re a rite of spring, celebrated with festivals and suppers across the region. They have become so popular though that you need to harvest mindfully.

Bee Balm Iced Tea

A cooling way to bring the firework blooms to your porch this summer. Make a fragrant, slightly citrusy bee balm tea!

Ingredients:

• 1 cup fresh bee balm flowers and leaves, loosely packed (or ½ cup dried)

• 4 cups boiling water

• 3 cups cold water, plus ice

• Honey to taste

• Lemon slices, for serving

Instructions:

1. Place the bee balm flowers and leaves in a large heatproof jar or pitcher.

2. Pour the boiling water over the top and let steep, covered, for 15–20 minutes.

3. Strain out the plant material and discard.

4. Stir in honey to taste while the tea is still warm, so it dissolves fully.

5. Add the cold water and stir to combine.

6. Chill in the refrigerator until cold, then serve over ice with a slice of lemon.

There’s something fitting about a summer built around plants that mimic fireworks. Long before fireworks, flowers were already putting on their own show. They may be quieter, but no less spectacular! Throw in lightning bugs and it is a full-on party! (haha!) Bee balm and elderflower, coneflower and yarrow are a celebration. They bloom season after season the same way they have for generations, rooted deep in this ground and in the hands of the herbalists who learned to use them.

There is a plant growing right now on the side of every road in Appalachia. You know the one, it is as tall as a man by midsummer, its great silver-green rosette sprawling low in the first year like something patient and listening, then sending up a torch of yellow flowers in the second. Soft as lamb’s ear. Persistent as grief. It is mullein.

For centuries, Appalachian grandmothers harvested its leaves for lung troubles, its flowers steeped in oil for earaches, its roots and smoke for the chest-tightening that comes with mountain winters. Cherokee healers knew it. Scots-Irish settlers carried the knowledge across the Atlantic and found the plant had arrived here before them, or alongside them, already making itself at home in disturbed soil, already doing its work.
Now Instagram wants you to hate it.

The Charge

Somewhere between the native plant movement going viral and the algorithm deciding that identifying invasive species was good for engagement, mullein found itself on trial. Posts circulate with the confident authority of a field guide: this plant is invasive, pull it when you see it, it doesn’t belong here.

The ecological argument goes like this: mullein is native to Europe and northern Africa. It was introduced to North America in the mid-1700s, first reportedly as a fish poison in Virginia, then spread rapidly by settlers who valued it as medicine. By 1818 it was so thoroughly naturalized on the Eastern Seaboard that botanists were describing it as native. By 1876 it had reached the Pacific Coast.
It is, by the technical definition, a non-native species. And in certain contexts particularly in the American West, where wildfires are more frequent and post-fire ecosystems more fragile, its ability to rapidly colonize bare ground does create real competition with native herbs and grasses trying to recover.

These are legitimate concerns. They deserve legitimate conversation.

But they do not deserve the flattening that social media gives them.

What Mullein Actually Does

Mullein is a disturbance plant. This is not an insult it is merely a description of its ecological role. Verbascum thapsus evolved to colonize bare, broken, disturbed soil. It requires open ground and full light to germinate. It cannot compete with established plant communities. It will not take over a healthy forest. It will not muscle out a thriving meadow.

What it will do is show up in the places we have broken.

Roadsides. Clearcuts. Overgrazed pastures. Construction sites. The raw edges of places where the earth has been scraped bare and left without cover. Mullein arrives in these wound-places the way a poultice arrives on a bruise; not causing the damage but responding to it.

This is, when you think about it, exactly what it does for the human body. Mullein’s mucilaginous leaves soothe inflamed respiratory tissue. Its saponins loosen congestion. It moves into the irritated, broken-down places in the body and offers something gentle. It does the same thing in the landscape.

The plant is consistent in its character. It heals what is wounded.

The Cement Question

Here is what the invasive species conversation almost never asks: why is there so much bare, disturbed ground in the first place?
In Appalachia, the mountains that hold mullein’s deepest roots in this continent, the plant does not behave invasively in any meaningful sense. Intact, mature forest, the kind of forest that covered these ridges before extraction, before the road-building, before the subdivisions crept up the hollers (and built gates and McMansions~ but that is a story for another day) doesn’t offer mullein much of a foothold. It needs light. It needs exposed soil. A healthy, canopied forest gives it neither.

But we have not left the forest healthy and intact. We have built roads through every gap. We have clear-cut and strip-mined and developed. We have covered bottomland with asphalt and called it progress. We have disturbed more soil in a century than a thousand years of natural processes would have managed.

And now we want to blame the plant that grows in our wake.

This is the oldest trick in the book: locate a visible symptom and call it the disease. It is easier to pull mullein than to reckon with the industrial land use, the sprawl, the altered fire regimes, the overgrazing that creates the conditions mullein fills. The plant becomes the scapegoat for the wound it is trying to heal.

The Flattening Problem

Not all invasive species are equal, and not all landscapes are equal, and the algorithm doesn’t care about either of those things.

There is a meaningful difference between:
A mullein plant growing on an Appalachian roadside, where it has grown for three hundred years, providing medicine to people who needed it and habitat structure in a disturbed margin and a monoculture of kudzu smothering an entire forest canopy.

There is a meaningful difference between:
Mullein colonizing post-fire slopes in the Sierra Nevada, where native alpine ecosystems are genuinely fragile and the plant is relatively new and mullein growing in a Kentucky pasture where no one could reasonably call the land pristine or the ecosystem intact.

Context is everything. Ecology is local. Instagram is not.

The native plant movement, at its best, asks us to pay closer attention to the particular place we live to know its species, its relationships, its history. At its worst, it becomes a kind of botanical purity politics that flattens three centuries of co-evolution, erases the cultural knowledge embedded in plant relationships, and tells people to rip out the plants their grandmothers used to heal their children.

What Gets Lost

When we declare war on mullein, we do not simply wage war on a plant.
We wage war on a tradition of knowledge that sustained mountain communities through poverty, isolation, and the chronic absence of medical care. We declare illegitimate the centuries of observation, relationship, and use that constitute Appalachian folk medicine. We tell the herbalist, the granny woman, the person who still knows which plants grow where and what they’re good for, that their knowledge is not only irrelevant but actively harmful. I am scrutinizing this also on a personal level and I am increasing the amount of Mullein in my personal apothecary. Who started this and why?

This is not ecological stewardship. This is cultural erasure dressed in the language of conservation.

The plants that indigenous and folk traditions have long relied upon are almost never the ones that cause real ecological destruction. The genuinely invasive species, the ones that do cause monocultures, that do crowd out native communities, that do alter soil chemistry and hydrology are almost never the medicinal ones. They are the ornamentals, the agricultural introductions, the species moved by commerce rather than by healing hands.

Mullein arrived here as medicine. It spread because people carried it, because people valued it, because people needed it.

That history is written in the plant’s presence. It deserves more than a dismissive Instagram reel.

Follow the Money

Before accepting any narrative about a plant being dangerous, it is worth asking the oldest question in the room: who benefits?

Here is what the invasive species classification system actually creates, beyond ecological management: a funding stream.

When a plant is listed as a noxious weed at the state level, it becomes eligible for government removal grants. USDA’s Farm Service Agency funds weed control through programs like the Emergency Conservation Program. States layer their own money on top. Colorado alone runs a dedicated Noxious Weed Management Fund, distributing hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to counties, conservation districts, and private landowners specifically to eradicate listed plants.
Those eradication programs almost universally involve herbicides. Which means every plant added to a noxious weed list is a potential new market for the companies that make them.

Mullein is not currently on the federal noxious weed list. It is only state-listed in Colorado and Hawaii, so most Appalachian farmers have no legal obligation to remove it and no specific subsidy tied to it. But the pattern is worth understanding: classify a plant, unlock the money, sell the herbicide. The classification itself creates the market.

This does not mean every botanist who studies mullein’s spread is corrupt, or that every conservation grant is a conspiracy. It means the financial architecture around invasive species management deserves the same scrutiny we apply to any system where classification determines funding. Whose science gets funded? Whose removal contracts get awarded? Who profits when a plant that costs nothing and heals for free gets replaced by a paid chemical intervention?

These are not fringe questions. They are the questions any honest steward of the land should be asking.

If You Do Need to Manage It: Working with the Land, Not Against It

Perhaps your pasture is genuinely overtaken. Perhaps you have a specific area where you need to reduce mullein’s presence, a restoration planting, a garden bed, a slope you are trying to return to native cover. There are ways to do this that work with ecological principles rather than against them, without reaching for a sprayer.

Harvest first. Before removing any plant, take what it offers. First-year rosettes can be harvested for leaf medicine, dried for teas, tinctured, or infused in oil for ear drops. I have done reels on my Instagram on these methods.

Second-year stalks in flower can have their blooms harvested for mullein flower oil, one of the most valued preparations in folk medicine. You are not wasting the plant. You are completing the relationship.

Hand pulling works. Mullein has a taproot that is relatively shallow and comes out cleanly when the soil is moist. Pull before the plant flowers in its second year and you prevent the seed set entirely. This is the most effective single intervention available; one plant pulled before flowering removes up to 180,000 potential seeds from your soil.
Timing is everything. First-year rosettes pulled in late summer or fall will not return. Second-year plants pulled before the flower stalk sets seed eliminate that generation completely. Once seed is set, even removal of the plant leaves the seed bank intact for decades.

Cover the ground. Mullein cannot germinate in shade or in established ground cover. The single most effective long-term management strategy is competition, sow native grasses, establish ground cover, restore canopy. Give the soil something else to do. Mullein will yield to a healthy plant community every time, because that is its nature. It does not compete. It only fills what is empty.

Thick mulch in garden areas, adding wood chips, straw, leaf litter prevents germination entirely by blocking the light that mullein seeds require. This works for beds and borders where you want to exclude it without chemical intervention.

Do not till. Tilling brings dormant seeds to the surface and creates the bare, disturbed soil that mullein evolved to colonize. If you are trying to reduce mullein, disturbing the soil is working against yourself.

The irony embedded in all of this is the same irony that runs through the entire invasive species conversation: the best way to manage mullein is to create the conditions where it no longer needs to be there. Healthy soil. Established cover. Intact plant communities. A landscape that has been tended rather than stripped.

Which is, in the end, what any good steward of Appalachian land has always known.

What the Land is Telling Us

A hillside covered in mullein is not a problem. It is a message.

It is the land saying: something happened here. The ground was broken. The cover was lost. Something moved through.

The right response to that message is not to pull the plant that responded. It is to ask what broke the ground, and whether we can stop breaking it, and how we might help it heal more completely.

Plant more trees. Plant more native grasses. Restore more canopy. Stop paving. Stop scraping. Let the successional process work, because mullein is early succession, and where the land is healthy, it will yield in time to the plants that come after, the ones that need its initial cover and root structure to establish.

Work with the plant while it is there. Harvest the leaves for medicine. Learn what your grandmothers knew. Let the landscape and the herbalist tradition speak to each other, because they have always been in conversation.

And the next time the algorithm tells you to pull a plant that has been healing your people for three hundred years, ask who benefits from that instruction and whether the cement under your feet might be more worth your outrage.

A delicate, floral syrup made from fresh elderflower blossoms beautiful in lemonade, sparkling water, cocktails, or as a provisions-forward offering. Example- place over Brie or goat cheese, add to muffins, cakes, yogurts.

My Favorite- Sparkling water

Truth Elderflower Syrup

- 20 fresh elderflower heads (fully open, fragrant)

- 4 cup spring water

- 4 cup granulated sugar

Steps

1. Gently shake each elderflower head to remove any insects~ do not rinse, as this washes away the pollen and fragrance. Remove any large green stems, which can add bitterness, but leave small ones.

2. Add 4 cup water and 4 cup granulated sugar (1:1) to a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar is fully dissolved. Add the elderflower blossoms and simmer for 1 hour. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

3. Line a fine mesh sieve with muslin, cheesecloth, or a clean tea towel. Strain the syrup through into a clean bowl or pitcher, pressing gently. Discard solids.

4. Pour into sterilized glass bottles or jars. Seal tightly. Refrigerate for up to 4 weeks or freeze for up to a year. For shelf-stable provisions use, process in a water bath canner for 10 minutes.

A love letter in roots and blossoms for the ones who hold the whole world together~

Somewhere back in the hills, a woman is standing at her kitchen window with her hands still damp from the garden. She smells like dirt and something sweet. She always knows what you need before you ask. She is every grandmother who ever pressed a cool cloth to a fevered brow, every mother who reached for the mullein before the cough syrup, every daughter learning the names of things. This one’s for her.

This one’s for all of them.

There’s something that happens in the hills of Appalachia in early May. The redbuds have come and gone. The mayapples are up, spreading their umbrella leaves over the forest floor. The air is soft and smells like rain and new leaves and something loamy underneath it all, our earth waking up after a long sleep. It’s the time of year when the mountains feel most like a mother. Generous. Abundant. Knowing exactly what to give.

The women who came before us understood this. They kept their herb bundles hanging from the rafters and their simpler jars lined up on the windowsill, and they knew which plant was good for a grieving heart and which one was good for a tired back. That knowledge passed hand to hand, woman to woman, generation to generation, is what we’re tending here at Truth Apothecary.

This Mother’s Day, we want to honor it by sharing some of the herbs we reach for when we want to care for the mothers in our lives. And maybe, gently, for ourselves.

Motherwort  

Leonurus cardiaca

I start here because this one’s been telling us its purpose since it was named. Motherwort. The mother’s herb. The ancients were not subtle about it, and neither are we. This bitter, bristly plant with its little pink-purple flowers tucked along a square stem has been tending to women’s hearts, literal and metaphorical, for centuries.

Culpeper wrote of it as a sovereign remedy for “trembling of the heart,” and if that doesn’t describe the average Tuesday for a mother of young children and Friday for the mother of older children, I don’t know what does.

Motherwort is what we call a nervine cardiac tonic, it eases anxiety, steadies a racing or palpitating heart, and takes the edge off that specific flavor of overwhelm that lives right in the chest. It’s particularly wonderful for the anxious exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long. The kind where you can’t quite settle even when you finally sit down.

A tincture is the most efficient way to work with motherwort. A few drops in a little water when the chest gets tight, or taken regularly as a longer-term support. It is bitter and it’s beautiful, and it will not lie to you about what it is.

Just like the best mothers.

Lemon Balm

 Melissa officinalis

If motherwort is the herb for when your heart is racing, lemon balm is the herb for after, when the storm has passed and you’re just sitting in the quiet wreckage of a long week, trying to remember what peaceful feels like. It is the gentlest thing. It smells like someone handed you a lemon straight from the garden, green-leafed and warm.

Lemon balm has been used for over two thousand years as a nervine, a plant that nourishes and soothes the nervous system. It eases anxiety without sedating, lifts a low mood without overstimulating, and settles a digestive system that’s been clenched up from stress. It’s safe for children and beloved by them. We’ve made many a cup of lemon balm tea for a little one who couldn’t settle, and watched small shoulders drop down from around small ears.

A strong fresh tea is our favorite way to take it dried or, even better, snipped right from the garden. Add a little raw honey and a twist of lemon peel. Sit down while you drink it. That last part is medicine too.

Red Raspberry Leaf  

Rubus idaeus

This is the herb that’s been growing behind mountain homesteads and along fence rows for as long as people have been growing things. The berries get the glory, but the leaf is where the medicine lives. Red raspberry leaf is one of the great tonic herbs for the female body, deeply nutritive, rich in magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium, and a long-trusted ally for the uterus from menarche to menopause.

It tones and strengthens rather than stimulates. It’s not dramatic. It’s the kind of herb that does its work quietly, like a good neighbor who just keeps showing up. Women who drink it regularly often notice easier cycles, less cramping, and a general sense of being more rooted in their bodies. In Appalachian tradition, it was a common beverage for women in the later months of pregnancy, a practice now supported by growing research and the long consensus of women who simply knew.

Make it as an infusion, a real one, steeped long and strong, a quart jar’s worth at a time. It tastes like a gentle black tea and asks very little of you. Give it to the mother in your life with a good book and an afternoon to herself. That’s the whole prescription right there.

Lavender

 Lavandula angustifolia

Yes, I know. Lavender is everywhere. It’s on every candle and every lotion and every thing marketed to women who are tired. But before it was a marketing strategy, it was a real and serious medicinal plant with two thousand years of documented use. We’re not done with lavender just because the rest of the world discovered it. We’re reclaiming it.

Hildegard of Bingen wrote of it in the twelfth century. Mountain grannywomen kept it for headaches and heartache both. The research is robust: lavender preparations have demonstrated genuine anxiolytic effects, meaningful benefit for sleep quality, and real reduction in headache severity. This is not placebo. It is plant medicine doing what it has always done.

For a mother who can’t sleep and is there one who can? … a sachet inside the pillowcase, a few drops on the temples at bedtime, or a cup of lavender honey tea in the last hour before sleep. For a grief that won’t lift, a long bath with dried lavender scattered in the water.

Consider that a prescription.

Tulsi

 Ocimum tenuiflorum

Tulsi is not native to Appalachia , she comes to us from India, where she has been considered sacred for more than three thousand years. We receive her with deep respect for that lineage and profound gratitude that she found her way to us. Because if there is one herb for the modern mother; tired, overextended, swimming against the current of too much to do and not enough sleep, it might be this one.

Tulsi is an adaptogen, meaning she helps the body adapt to and recover from stress. She is also an uplifting adaptogen, not sedating, not dulling, but genuinely brightening. Women who work with her regularly often describe feeling more themselves: clearer-headed, more resilient, less like they’re constantly bracing for the next thing. She smells like spiced cloves and rain and something holy.

Drink her as a tea every morning if you can. Fresh or dried, steeped for ten minutes, taken with intention. Some days that intention is just: I am doing one small thing for myself before the day starts. That counts. It always counts.

Wild Rose  

Rosa canina & spp.

You can’t write an herbal love letter to mothers without the rose. It would be like leaving out the chorus. Wild roses grow on rocky hillsides and along old fence lines through the mountains, their single five-petaled blossoms nothing like the cultivated hothouse roses handed at graduations. They are wilder and simpler and they smell like something true. If you have been on our walks lately you have seen them in my stories.

Roses have been heart medicine in every tradition that has used them. Not metaphorically, or not only metaphorically. In Bach flower remedies, in Ayurveda, in Chinese medicine, in Western herbalism, the rose is for the heart that has closed down from grief or loss or the simple accumulated weight of love given and love withheld. Rose hip tea, rose petal honey, rose-infused vinegar, these are all ways of saying to the heart: it’s okay to open again.

The hips are also one of the richest plant sources of Vitamin C on earth and something the mountain people knew and relied on through long winters. And the seed oil, pressed cold from the hip, is one of the finest things you can put on a mother’s tired face. Regenerative, deeply nourishing, quietly miraculous. Like roses themselves. Like mothers.

These plants have been with us for a long time. Longer than Mother’s Day as a holiday, longer than any card or brunch or bouquet. The women who tended them and were tended by them passed something forward to us a way of caring that is rooted in the earth and trusts the body and remembers that we are not separate from the living world.

So today or any other day, if you want to honor a mother, or if you are a mother who wants to honor yourself, or you are a woman who cares for others, reach for something that grew in the ground. Make a tea. Put a sachet in a drawer. Press a rose petal in a letter. Let the plants carry some of what words can’t quite hold.

They are very good at that.

The old ones knew it. They called it goosegrass, stickyweed, catchweed, bedstraw, cleaverwort. Every name a story. They fed it to geese to fatten them up. They stuffed into mattresses. They strained milked through its tangled stems. They drank it cold-steeped, long infused, and pulled straight from the spring earth as the first medicine of the new year. Before the pharmacy, before the clinic, before the supplement aisle, there was a jar of cleavers on the windowsill every April. It is truly a favorite of Truth Apothecary as well.

In addition, Cleavers can be used in a tincture for non spring seasons.

This is one of those plants. The ones the granny women knew. The ones that didn’t make it into the textbooks but never left the kitchen. It is truly a favorite of Truth Apothecary as well. Many of you have seen it on our many live walks on social media.

Let’s review it properly.

Botany:

Cleavers is a scrambling annual that is unable to stand up on its own. It uses everything around it as a trellis: other plants, fences, stones, and you! The stems are square and slender and can stretch four to six feet. Every surface whether it is a stem, leaf, or seed is covered in tiny-hooked hairs that are backward facing. This is how they catch so fiercely on fabric and fur with the grip of something twice its size. Supposedly, this is the plant that inspired Velcro. If not a true story, definitely a true description of this plant.

The leaves grow in a whorl of six to eight around the stem, each one narrow and lance shaped. The flowers a small, white, four-petaled and almost invisible. They bloom April through June. The seeds come in pairs, round, covered in those hooked bristles and ready for travel. It is plant that arrives in spring, does all of its work, and before other plants are doing their work, has disappeared. It is a plant of a single season, all urgency, and true intention.

A note on harvesting:

Gather cleavers before it goes to seed, the earlier in spring the more ideal. This is when the stems are still tender and the hairs less coarse. Fresh is best. Dried cleavers loses much of its vitality, which is why the old traditions nearly always used it fresh, cold-infused overnight, juiced, or eaten young in broth. This is a spring plant, and it WANTS to be used in spring.

What the Old Herbalists Said

“The juice of the herb is drunk to keep lean and lank; it prevents that corpulency which a full diet would otherwise occasion.”

~Nicholas Culpeper, Complete Herbal, 1653

Culpeper knew what he was talking about, even if language has aged. He placed cleavers under the governance of Venus and recommended it for everything from swollen glands, skin disease, and weight management. Weight lines up with how we understand lymphatic congestion and fluid metabolism today. This is a wonderful book.

Another favorite herbalist writer of mine is Mrs. M. Grieve. Writing in A Modern Herbal in 1931, catalogued cleavers as one of the most reliable spring tonics in European herbal tradition. A plant taken every April to ‘cleanse the blood’ after a winter of heavy, salted food and stagnant air. The tradition was too steep it cold for nine days up to nine weeks. It is not accidental in old plant medicine to use the number nine. It says this is not a one-dose remedy. This is a practice.

King’s American Dispensatory, the great 19th-century reference, listed cleavers as an alterative and diuretic, meaning it was understood as something that gradually shifted the body toward better function, particularly through the lymph and kidney. It was prescribed for scrofula (what we’d now recognize as lymphatic tuberculosis), for swollen glands, for skin eruptions that wouldn’t heal, for chronic urinary complaints. Physicians used it where the body seemed stuck; congested, damp, sluggish. Cleavers was the plant that got things moving.

To Appalachian, British, Irish, German descendants, cleavers was the quintessential spring tonic. Mountain families gathered it from creek banks and fence rows in March and April. It was drunk as a cold tea first thing in the morning. It was pressed and the juice mixed with honey. It was simmered into a pot liquor and served with early greens.

The name “bedstraw” comes from its traditional use as mattress stuffing. The dried plant was sweet smelling and said to repel fleas.

Galium, from the Greek for milk, reflects another practical use: the stems were used to strain and curdle milk for cheesemaking. This plant was not medicine in a bottle. It was woven into daily life.

What It Actually Does

Here’s how I think about cleavers: it is the plant for when your body is holding on to things it needs to let go of. Fluid. Waste. Inflammatory debris. Old grief, if you believe in that kind of thing, and in this apothecary, we do.

Lymphatic System

This is where cleavers do its most significant work. The lymphatic system is the body’s drainage network, it moves fluid out of the tissues, filters waste and runs a substantial portion of our immune activity. When it gets congested, through illness, poor diet, sedentary living (winter), chronic stress, you feel it. Puffy under the jaw. Swollen in the groin. Skin that won’t clear. A heaviness that doesn’t lift. Cleavers is one of the best herbs we have for getting lymph moving again. It’s cooling and cleansing, not stimulating, and it doesn’t force the system, it coaxes it.

Dropsy- What we would now recognize as edema or fluid retention particularly in the legs and abdomen. Cleavers as a diuretic was one of the first-reach remedies.

Tonsillitis and sore throat. Given its lymphatic action in the throat and neck, this use makes anatomical sense. A cold gargle and internal tea were traditional.

Urinary Tract

Cleavers has a well-earned reputation as a demulcent diuretic, meaning it increases urine flow while soothing the mucous membranes of the urinary tract rather than irritating them. This makes it useful in cystitis, urethritis, and general urinary inflammation. The iridoid glycoside asperuloside contributes to this gentle laxative and diuretic action. The flavonoids, quercetin and rutin bring anti-inflammatory support. It is a gentle but real urinary remedy, particularly suited to hot, irritated presentations.

Skin

The skin and the lymph are deeply connected. When the lymphatic system is congested, the skin often shows it first; acne that won’t resolve, eczema that flares in spring, psoriasis that tracks with stress and stagnation. Cleavers works at this intersection, both internally as a lymphatic mover and externally as a vulnerary — meaning it supports wound healing and skin repair. Topically, a cold infusion of cleavers used as a wash or compress has a long history in the treatment of eczema, burns, and inflamed skin conditions. Eczema, psoriasis, rashes of unknown origin, conditions described as “hot and itching” cleavers was applied both internally as a tea and externally as a poultice or wash the polyphenols and asperulosidic acid derivatives bring real antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action to this use.

What the Research Is Starting to Say

Modern studies are beginning to catch up with what traditional herbalists knew. Research has shown that Galium aparine extract demonstrates immunomodulatory activity and it enhances lymphocyte function and macrophage activity, supporting the body’s immune defenses. Lab studies have shown cytotoxic activity against certain breast cancer cell lines while sparing healthy cells. Work on antimicrobial and hepatoprotective properties is ongoing.

This is not a fully studied herb and most of the evidence remains preclinical. But the mechanism behind its traditional uses is no longer mysterious. The constituents are real. The actions are plausible. The history is long.

Cautions

Cleavers has diuretic properties. Those with diabetes, kidney disease, or heart conditions, or those who are pregnant or nursing, should consult a qualified healthcare provider before use. In addition, pay attention to certain medications you may also be taking. As with all herbs taken over time, pay attention to how your body responds. The plant will tell you what it’s doing.

Allison’s Thoughts

There is a plant that sticks to you whether you want it to or not. That grows in the disturbed places, the fence rows, the forgotten edges of things. That arrives uninvited in your garden and tangles itself through everything you planted on purpose. That has been used as medicine for thousands of years by people who had no other options and knew exactly what they were doing.

That’s cleavers.

Cleavers was holding lymph open and clearing skin and moving fluid long before any of us named it anything. It will be doing the same long after.

The keepers knew this. The hedge women. The granny midwives. The early physicians. The alchemists. The women who kept jars and journals and root bundles and passed their knowledge through apprenticeship and story rather than degree. They are the ones who did not let cleavers become a forgotten herb. They are the ones who kept the cold infusion alive through every century that tried to replace it with something pharmaceutical and profitable.

I think about them every spring when the first sticky tendrils show up along the creek bank. I gather it. I fill the jar. I let it steep overnight. And in the morning, I drink what they drank, and I remember who taught us.

Spring Cleavers Cold Infusion

With lemon, raw honey & a sprig of mint. The keeper’s morning cup. This is the traditional preparation, done right. Not a warm infusion, a cold infusion. Heat destroys much of what makes cleavers valuable. The old way was cold water, a long steep, and patience.

WHAT YOU NEED

A large handful of fresh cleavers stems, leaves, any flowers available (loosely packed in a quart mason jar)

1-quart cold filtered water

Juice of half a lemon (optional)

1 teaspoon raw local honey, or to taste (optional)

A sprig of fresh mint (optional)

A fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth

HOW TO MAKE IT

1. Harvest your cleavers in the morning and rinse gently in cold water.

2. Pack the cleavers loosely into a clean quart jar. Do not chop or bruise; leave the stems whole.

3. Pour cold water over the plant material until the jar is full.

4. Add the mint sprig. Secure with a lid. (optional)

5. Place in the refrigerator and allow to steep overnight up to 8 to 12 hours. For a stronger preparation, steep up to 24hours.

6. Strain well through cheesecloth, pressing the plant material to extract all the liquid. The infusion should be a soft, pale green-gold color.

7. Add lemon juice and honey. Stir well. Taste and adjust. (optional)

8. Drink 1 to 2 cups in the morning, on an empty stomach if possible. This is a spring tonic use it for 4 to 6 weeks in early spring, then rest.

ON USING DRIED CLEAVERS

If you cannot access fresh cleavers, use 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of cold water, steeped overnight. The dried herb is considerably less potent than fresh if you have access to the living plant in spring, prioritize it.

What Pollination Actually Is

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains (male gametophytes) from the anther to the stigma of a compatible flower of the same species. This initiates fertilization in angiosperms (flowering plants), enabling seed formation and genetic diversity¹. (see last article for basic botany)

Without pollination, sexual reproduction in flowering plants stops.

The Flower Is a Reproductive Machine

Flowers are not decorative structures. They are engineered reproductive systems.

• Anthers produce pollen via meiosis

• Pollen grains are encased in sporopollenin, among the most chemically resistant biological materials known

• Stigmas actively recognize and hydrate compatible pollen

• Styles guide pollen tube growth

• Ovaries contain ovules that develop into seeds after fertilization

Most flowering plants use self-incompatibility systems which are genetic checkpoints that prevent inbreeding by chemically rejecting pollen from the same genotype².

Pollination is selective, not accidental. Pollination is truly the hand of God.

What Happens After Pollen Lands

Once a pollen grain contacts a receptive stigma, it germinates and grows a pollen tube through the style. This growth is guided by calcium gradients and peptide attractants released by the ovule³.

Angiosperms undergo double fertilization, unique in biology:

• One sperm fertilizes the egg → embryo

• One sperm fertilizes the central cell → endosperm (nutrient tissue)

No pollination, no fertilization. No fertilization, no seed. No seeds, no medicine.

Pollination Examples: Precision Biology

Bees and Apples (Malus domestica)

Apple trees are largely self-incompatible and require cross-pollination. Bees, especially Apis mellifera, collect nectar and pollen, trapping grains on branched body hairs.

Pollination directly determines apple fruit set, size, and sugar content. Flowering without bees produces empty orchards⁴.

Orchids and Sexual Deception (Ophrys)

Some orchids do not offer nectar at all.

Ophrys species chemically mimic female bees. Male bees attempt mating, during which pollen packets (pollinia) attach to precise anatomical locations. Transfer efficiency is nearly perfect.

This is evolutionary exploitation masquerading as romance⁵.

Birds and Tubular Flowers

Plants like trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) are adapted to hummingbirds, not insects. Red pigmentation, elongated corollas, and dilute nectar match bird vision and feeding mechanics.

Pollen coats the bird’s bill and forehead, transferring cleanly between flowers.

Wind Pollination: Quantity Over Accuracy

Corn (Zea mays)

Wind-pollinated plants trade precision for volume.

An example is corn. Corn tassels release millions of pollen grains. Female flowers capture pollen on elongated stigmas called silks and each silk corresponds to one ovule. No pollen, no kernel.

Patchy pollination explains incomplete ears of corn⁶.

From Pollination to Fruit

After fertilization:

• Ovules become seeds

• Ovaries mature into fruit

• Plant hormones redirect resources away from flowering

Fruit ultimately exists to protect and disperse seeds; it is God’s work that these plants and fruits also feed us and give us medicine.

Why Pollination Matters to Medicine

Pollination is foundational to modern pharmacology.

Over 25% of prescription drugs are derived directly or indirectly from flowering plants⁷, many of which depend on animal pollination to reproduce and maintain genetic diversity.

Examples include:

• Digitalis (foxglove): heart failure

  • Used to Make Digoxin

    

• Atropine (belladonna): anesthesia, toxicology

  • Used as Atropine

    

    

• Morphine (opium poppy): pain management

  • Used in pain medications (so much to uncover here with the Sackler family and the pharmaceutical industry and wars)

    

• Paclitaxel: cancer chemotherapy

  • Derived from the Pacific Yew Tree

    

• Artemisinin (Artemisia annua): malaria

  • Derived from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) to treat malaria

    

• Reduced pollination leads to:

  • Shrinking plant populations

  • Loss of genetic diversity

  • Declines in secondary metabolites the compounds medicine depends on⁸. As you can see in the figure below, the less pollinator activity, the lower the quantity of active phytochemicals (what reacts with our bodies to create a healing process).

Pollinator collapse is not only an ecological crisis. It is a pharmaceutical one. Pollination is fundamental to our Herbal Apothecaries. Without our pollinators, one of our true medicines will suffer.

More than 75% of food crops rely at least partly on animal pollination⁹. Habitat loss, pesticides, monoculture farming, and climate geoengineering is dismantling plant-pollinator relationships faster than evolution can repair them.

Pollination is not fragile because it is simple. It is fragile because it is exact.

Pollination is a high-fidelity biological exchange involving chemistry, genetics, anatomy, and behavior. Every flower is a compatibility test. Every seed is evidence that the system still works.

Our FOOD depends on POLLINATION. Our MEDICINE depends on POLLINATION.

With the addition of apps that allow a person to take a picture and identify a flower, the beauty of what is below the image may be lost due to the excitement of the identifications. At Truth Apothecary, we understand this sentiment but will continue to teach the basics to the Keepers that follow and learn from us.

All plant identification prior to the ability to genetically test, was based on attributes of a plant’s reproduction in combination with physical attributes. The family of angiosperms, which are flowering plants, all center around the basic anatomy below.

Flowers have two primary parts: the vegetative part, which includes the petals and the sepals, and the reproductive part, encompassing the stamen (male reproductive organ) and the pistil or carpal (female reproductive organ).

There are many flowers that look different, but each have the same basic parts.

Vegetative Parts of a Flower

• (Perianth) Petals (Corolla): Petals are usually the most noticeable part of a flower and serve a vital function in attracting pollinators. The vibrant colors and enticing scents of petals attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and birds.

• Sepals (Calyx): These are small, modified leaves that enclose and protect the flower bud before it opens. They are often green, but in some flowers, they are brightly colored and resemble the petals. Receptacle: This is the part of the flower where the flower attaches to the stalk.

• Peduncle: The peduncle is the formal name for a flower stalk.

Reproductive Parts of a Flower

The reproductive structures of flowers are separate male and female parts:

• Male Parts (Stamen or Androecium)

  • Anther: This part of the stamen produces and contains pollen. The anther is usually at the end of a thin tube-like structure called the filament.

  • Filament: The filament is a stalk that holds up the anther, making the pollen accessible to pollinators or wind.

• Female Parts (Pistil or Carpel or Gynoecium)

  • Stigma: This is the part of the pistil that receives. It is often sticky or feathery for trapping and holding onto the pollen grains.

  • Style: This is the long tube-like structure that connects the stigma and the ovary. Once a pollen grain lands on the stigma, it grows a pollen tube down the style to reach the ovary and accomplish fertilization.

  • Ovary: This is the part of the pistil that holds the ovule(s). It is within the ovary that fertilization occurs and seeds develop.

  • Ovule: The ovule is the potential seed within the ovary. Each ovule contains an egg cell. When an ovule is fertilized by a sperm cell from a pollen grain, it develops into a seed.

An herbal Christmas soda might begin with sarsaparilla root, prized for its warming, blood-moving qualities and deep, wintry flavor. Ginger added brightness and digestive comfort after heavy holiday meals, while sassafras (no longer added in current herbal tonics), birch, or wintergreen lent forest notes that echoed evergreen boughs and cold air. In some regions, spruce tips or pine needles, rich in vitamin C, were steeped lightly for a crisp, resinous edge that felt unmistakably seasonal.

These sodas were mixed fresh at the counter: a spoonful of herbal syrup, chilled carbonated water, and a flourish of foam. They were often served as “temperance drinks,” festive yet alcohol-free, aligning with the pharmacist’s role as a guardian of health. During December, special blends appeared, sometimes colored ruby with cherry or spiced with clove and cinnamon.

Christmas Petal Pop

For the Herbal Syrup

• Dried sarsaparilla root (cut & sifted) – 2 Tbsp

• Dried ginger root – 1 Tbsp

• Spruce tip tea or pine needle tea (food-grade) – 1 Tbsp

• Cinnamon sticks – 1–2

• Whole cloves – 4–6

• Orange peel (dried) – 1 Tbsp

• Pure cane sugar or raw honey – 1 cup

• Filtered water – 2 cups

To Finish

• Plain sparkling water (Topo Chico, San Pellegrino, or generic)

or

• Soda siphon + CO₂ cartridges (for true soda-fountain style)

Make the Herbal Decoction

In a saucepan, combine:

• Sarsaparilla

• Ginger

• Spruce tips (or pine needle tea)

• Cinnamon sticks

• Cloves

• Orange peel

• Water

Bring to a gentle simmer. Cover and simmer 30 minutes, then remove from heat and steep an additional 20 minutes.

Strain & Sweeten

Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

Return the liquid to the pan and add:

• Sugar or honey

Warm gently, stirring until fully dissolved.

Cool completely.

Build the Soda (Per Glass)

• Add 1–2 Tbsp syrup to a chilled glass

• Fill with sparkling water

• Stir gently

• Optional garnish: orange peel twist, rosemary sprig, or cinnamon stick

• Spruce/Pine – evergreen winter brightness

Even before Prohibition, medical opinion about whiskey/brandy as therapeutics was shifting; for example, whiskey and brandy were removed from the list of scientifically approved medicines in the U.S. Pharmacopeia in 1916, reflecting growing skepticism about beverage spirits as “drugs.”

But that didn’t eliminate ethanol’s importance to pharmaceutics. Countless preparations relied on ethyl alcohol as the best practical solvent for resins, volatile oils, alkaloids, and botanical actives, and as a preservative in an era before today’s manufacturing, packaging, and refrigeration norms.

Prohibition arrived, the same substance that made a tincture possible was also the substance the federal government was trying to keep out of circulation. That meant pharmacies faced a new reality: alcohol wasn’t merely a reagent; it was a compliance risk.

To continue handling alcohol-containing products legally, pharmacies had to operate under a regulatory framework designed to prevent diversion. Contemporary museum archival summaries describe requirements such as applying for permits (renewed annually), posting security bonds, keeping logbooks of medicinal alcohol prescriptions filled, and maintaining monthly records of alcohol-containing products bought/sold.

Those burdens hit compounding pharmacies directly:

• Administrative drag: time spent on compliance displaced time spent on formulation, patient counseling, and quality work.

• Inventory friction: alcohol procurement and documentation became more complex, limiting the flexibility that compounding depends on.

• Higher operating costs: bonds, recordkeeping systems, and the risk of penalties increased the “overhead” of making alcohol-based preparations.

Prohibition law allowed alcohol for medicinal use under strict controls, but in practice it created a massive gray market routed through clinicians and pharmacies. The Smithsonian’s collections include official National Prohibition Act prescription forms for medicinal liquor as physical evidence of how formalized this channel became.

Multiple historical accounts describe limits such as a pint every ten days on government forms and “canceling” prescriptions after filling rules aimed at preventing refills and reuse.

Yet the scale of use was enormous: historical pharmacy sources estimate millions of alcohol prescriptions were written annually during the 1920s.

This mattered for medicine-making because it distorted incentives and scrutiny:

• Pharmacies were treated (and sometimes behaved) like quasi-liquor outlets. That reputational shift made legitimate alcohol use for compounding more politically and legally sensitive.

• Diversion fears encouraged tighter rules, which made legitimate practice harder (more audits, stricter paperwork, narrower allowances).

When alcohol becomes administratively “expensive,” practitioners adapt:

• Reformulating away from ethanol (when possible) into glycerites, syrups, vinegars, oils, or lower-alcohol vehicles, often with stability or extraction tradeoffs.

• Reducing on-hand stock to lower compliance exposure at the cost of creating a wait for their patients.

• Avoiding certain formulations entirely because the recordkeeping and risk weren’t worth it, which would change the prescribing habits of our physicians and availability of medicines.

Even when Prohibition allowed specific medicinal alcohol channels, the system was not designed around pharmaceutical convenience, it was designed around preventing beverage use. The result was a practical inhibition: fewer preparations made the “easy” way, and some became economically or operationally unattractive.

As abuse of medicinal liquor channels became widely acknowledged, Congress and regulators moved toward additional control. By 1933, right before full repeal, Congress passed measures aimed at changing how medicinal liquor prescribing was handled by creating revised controls away from prescription blanks towards a stamp system.

Prohibition didn’t eliminate pharmacy compounding, but it made alcohol-based medicine-making harder, costlier, and riskier. Pharmacies had to navigate permits, bonds, meticulous logs, and heightened suspicion; they also operated in a landscape where “medicinal alcohol” became a heavily policed loophole rather than a straightforward pharmaceutical ingredient. The net effect was inhibition: less flexibility, more friction, and forced reformulation in the very years when many pharmacies still relied on alcohol as a primary tool of the trade.

While compliance costs and regulatory complexity weighed on smaller operators, larger chain pharmacies leveraged the medicinal alcohol loophole as a revenue driver. Walgreens, founded in 1901, was an early beneficiary:

• In 1919 (just before Prohibition) it had around 20 stores.

• By 1929, at the height of nationwide Prohibition, it had over 500 outlets across the U.S.

Because pharmacies could legally dispense alcohol with prescriptions and many customers sought that access, big chain drugstores became attractive destinations. The volume of prescriptions and foot traffic also boosted sales of other goods like sodas from in-store soda fountains, products that helped brands like Walgreens become household names.

Even beyond Walgreens, industry data from Drug Topics in 1928 showed thousands of chain drugstore units dominating the market and expanding across states like New York, Michigan, and Illinois.

There isn’t a detailed list of every drugstore that closed due to Prohibition, but multiple historical sources underscore a broader structural trend:

• According to Drug Topics, the surge in chain drugstores in the late 1920s squeezed independents, as bigger networks could handle the paperwork and volume of medicinal alcohol business more efficiently and offer more general merchandise.

• Independent pharmacies before the era numbered in the tens of thousands across the country; by mid-century, their proportion declined as chains gained scale and market share.

• Histories of the profession note that the 1920s were a troubled decade for community pharmacy because the business model shifted away from traditional compounding toward retail dispensing and broader commercial products.

Even if Prohibition wasn’t the only cause of closures, it accentuated competitive pressures at a pivotal moment in the industry’s evolution. Many independents simply couldn’t match the operational capacity, marketing reach, and administrative infrastructure of emerging chains.

The 1920s and 1930s marked a turning point in how pharmacies operated:

• Chain growth: By the late 1920s, chains like Liggett and Walgreens were counting hundreds of stores nationwide, pressuring independent drugstores to compete for customers and regulated prescription revenue.

• Shift in role: The traditional role of pharmacists as compounders and personalized medication makers was already declining in favor of dispensing manufactured formulations, a trend accelerated by regulated alcohol sales and later industrial pharmaceutical production.

• Long-term decline of independents: Over the ensuing century, independents continued to shrink as a share of the market. By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, independent pharmacies accounted for far fewer outlets as chains and big-box retailers dominated distribution.

While Prohibition’s medicinal alcohol loophole was an important economic lever in the 1920s, it worked alongside other forces that transformed pharmacy:

• Regulatory change: Formalized education and licensure requirements began shifting the profession toward standardized practice and away from traditional compounding.

• Industrial medicines: The rise of mass manufactured drugs diminished the relative role of compounding.

• Retail evolution: Drugstores increasingly sold convenience goods, sodas, and other consumer products, blurring the line between pharmacy and general retail.

These forces combined with the peculiar economics of regulated alcohol prescriptions helped shift business power toward larger retail pharmacy chains and away from the small, traditional apothecary model. By the end of the Prohibition era, the foundation for the modern pharmacy retail landscape, a landscape dominated by large chains and fewer independent apothecaries was firmly in place and ready for Rockefeller.

Let me begin this book report at the fiftieth celebration of Doc Pritham. The town of Greenville, ME was planning an event. It was the year 1955, and Greenville was getting ready to celebrate fifty years of servitude by their town doc.

“Fifty Years! The town of Greenville and the five thousand square miles of surrounding country joyfully prepared to pay honor to the beloved little doctor who had served them at all hours, in all seasons and weathers, for half a century.”

Born in 1880 on a farm five miles east of Freeport, ME, Fred Pritham was born of a time where work, play, and survival were all one. I doubt he would ever fathom his life 50 years after graduating medical school to be one of such honor, but Doc was a last of his kind, a dying breed, and one we should still to this day all hold dear to our hearts.

“But the Dr. Pritham Recognition Day, held on August 13, was the high point of the year, indeed of all fifty years. The town spent weeks in preparation. Numerous committees were appointed: Finance, Program, Invitations, Parade, Grounds, Refreshments, Entertainment. The Maine Medication Association was invited en masse, its president, Dr. Martyn Vickers, to the be the principal speaker. A big parade was planned, its marching units to include the American Legion and Auxiliary, the Boy Scouts, a contest array of decorated bicycles and baby carriages, cars with the insignia of all fraternal, civic, and service organizations and, of course, the Band.”

What a day of celebration. Do you agree? The parade ending led into speeches from the town. Doc was described as squirming under the accolades as person after person stood to tell a story. What I have not revealed yet was the Doc Pritham took care of people within a 5000 square mile region and for years was often the only if not one of two doctors providing care. It was his Grandson’s Howard speech that Doc loved.

“A wonderful thing this, he said, for a doctor to have happen to him while he was still alive. Though most doctors made a good living, it wasn’t for monetary values that they chose such a career. All the money in the world couldn’t compensate for the life and death decisions they had to make, any one of which might mean professional failure. It was the intangibles, the approval and good will of their patients, that were most valued. And this great gathering today was tangible proof of the intangibles, appreciation and approval.”

It then became time for Doc to address the revelers. I will let Dorothy’s words of this moment fill the page.

“Doc’s turn came finally. He mounted the platform from the band section for the last time. He wouldn’t make a speech. Too much had already been said. He would just say thank you and sit down. He turned to the audience, opened his mouth.

“My friends, I can’t tell you…”

Whatever he had intended to say was drowned in a tremendous clapping. It was such a noise as had seldom been heard in that place, even in the last seconds of a basketball game, with Greenville suddenly breaking a tie score. It kept on and on, for at least three minutes. Doc stood looking down into the faces, hundreds of them. He knew almost everyone, and not only the faces, the bodies. At least half of them he had held by the heels and slapped, eliciting the first protesting squalls. He knew just which ones had incisions and where, which stomachs were squeamish, which livers sluggish, which hearts murmured or palpitated, which smiles hid what aches or pains or fears or terrible knowledge of malignancy. A minister must feel something like this, custodian of people’s souls instead of their bodies. No, not the hit and run ministers he had known! How could you get to know a person’s soul in two, three, five years? Judas priest, he knew these people inside and out, souls as well as bodies! Not like one of these danged specialists, not their hearts, or their eyes, or their bones, or their lower innards. He knew them and he had given fifty years of his life to do it.”

Medicine as we know it today rarely if ever allots the physician time to be a healer. This honor has been stolen from our doctors, and ultimately from our society. No man is perfect as God is the ultimate healer, but it is through people like Doc Pritham that his work is demonstrated. These are the healers.

“Ella’s mother had this faith to an excess. When Ella was teaching out of state and her mother was living with her and fell sick, no other doctor, even the best qualified would satisfy. But as soon as Ella brought her back home, all Doc had to do was come in and look at her, and immediately her health improved. Doc had no “bedside manner.” Often, he asked few questions. He seemed never in a hurry. There was not too much bothering to take pulse and temperature and blood pressure. Not at first, that is. He would sit down, start talking perhaps about a duck hunt, all the time looking keenly at the patient, noting any changes in the face, eyes, general appearance, and getting a very good idea of his condition before starting any sort of examination. But for those who knew and trusted him his very presence set the healing process in motion.”

This book was written in 1971. At this time Doc Pritham was 91 years old and was still practicing medicine. He lived in his same home with the front parlor area his examination room.

“Now…go back to the square, austere house beside the church. Mount the huge slabs of stone steps and push the old-fashioned bell. If you’re lucky, a slight, stooped gnome-like figure will appear in the door, ruddy cheeks and keen eyes belying his more than ninety years. Look at him well, for he is one of a fast-vanishing breed, the all-purpose, all hours doctor who believes it’s his job to come to your aid anytime, anywhere, whatever your physical need.

He will invite you in, for his house is always open. On the left you can see the two rooms which for sixty-five years have been his office, contents almost unchanged.”

Doc traveled thousands of miles through the Maine wilderness on horseback and on foot; ridden cars, boats, planes, buggies, snowmobiles, lumber trucks, trains, and railroad handcars; gone on skates and snowshoes; jumped trains; swum rivers; waded through mud and snow and slush; skated over thin ice; plunged with his car to the bottom of Moosehead, all to provide medical service to an area of some five thousand square miles.

Doc started as a physician on foot and horse and ended by being able to ride in planes to remote areas. Doc started with runners that would alert him that he was needed and ended with telephones calling him. Doc started with surgeries in his home or wherever he may have been called to and ended with opportunities of surgeries in the hospital.

Doc Pritham was witness to medical changes that included x-ray machines, plasma, vaccinations (more on this in future writings), nurses, medicine, and advancement in surgical tools.

Doc Pritham is more than a story. It is the type of medicine that we need to fight for with all of our souls for all of our souls.

Literally.

The year was 1759, and Beaufort, North Carolina, was little more than a scattering of wooden buildings along the edge of the wild, restless Atlantic. The air was heavy with salt and the tang of marsh grass, mingled with the pungent scent of pine tar from the shipyards. Wooden wharves jutted into the harbor where sloops and schooners rocked on the tide, their sails patched and their decks stacked with barrels of molasses, sacks of flour, and bundles of herbs gathered from the inland forests.

At the heart of this small port town stood a modest apothecary shop, its windows glowing faintly at night with the light of whale-oil lamps. In the front window, a show globe shimmered, a beacon to sailors, farmers, and townsfolk alike. The colored liquid told the illiterate as well as the learned: here was a place of healing. When sickness gripped the town, Dr. Hellin would fill the globe with deep red liquid, a warning to all who passed. When the danger had passed, the color was changed to green or yellow, a sign of safety and relief.

Inside worked Dr. Elias Hellin, the only trained physician for miles. Equal parts doctor and druggist, Hellin was a man of quiet determination. He had come to Beaufort from New Bern five years earlier, when the settlement was struggling under storms, sickness, and the threat of privateers prowling the coast. His small shop smelled of dried herbs, camphor, and vinegar tinctures. Rows of jars lined the shelves, filled with remedies both imported and local: cinchona bark for fever, ipecacuanha root for stomach ailments, sassafras for blood purification, and carefully dried leaves of goldenrod and wild lettuce gathered by his own hand.

Though he was trained in European medicine, Hellin respected the knowledge of the local native tribes and settlers. Often, he would ride out on his sturdy bay horse, following narrow sandy tracks through the pine woods, to meet with healers who taught him about the plants of the Carolina coast, beautyberry for repelling insects, yaupon holly for its stimulating tea, and the strong, bitter usnea that grew on the old live oaks. He carried this knowledge back to his apothecary, blending Old World science with New World tradition.

But 1759 was a year of tension. The French and Indian War raged far to the north, yet its shadow stretched even to Beaufort’s shores. Ships from Europe were scarce, and whispers of French privateers reached the taverns nightly. Sometimes, distant sails appeared on the horizon, and townsfolk would rush to the wooden watchtower near the harbor, praying they were merchantmen and not raiders.

One evening, a messenger rode into town breathless, bringing news of fever spreading among a small inland farming village. Without hesitation, Hellin packed his saddlebags with cinchona bark, tinctures of sassafras, and salves of calendula, then rode through the night to tend to the sick. In those wild days, there was no hospital, no other doctor; only his skill, his knowledge, and his faith that nature itself provided the tools for healing.

In the apothecary shop, his wife, Margaret, tended to townsfolk who came seeking remedies. She measured out doses of castor oil for colic, mixed turpentine with sweet oil for chest complaints, and brewed herbal teas of chamomile and fennel for restless children. Together, they became the heart of Beaufort’s fragile community, offering not only medicine but comfort and hope.

The town faced storms both natural and man-made. That summer, a hurricane roared ashore, flooding the streets and scattering fishing boats like toys. Hellin’s apothecary, though battered, stood firm. When the waters receded, he hung his show globe once more in the window, filling it with yellow to show the town that the sickness had passed and safety had returned.

As the year turned, Beaufort remained small but determined. The wharf bustled with fishermen and traders, children played among the dunes, and the tavern rang with fiddles and laughter. In the midst of it all, Dr. Hellin kept his quiet vigil, a lone guardian on the edge of the Atlantic wilderness.

His apothecary, with its shelves of jars and bundles of drying herbs, was more than a shop. It was a promise that even in a remote, wind-lashed corner of the New World, knowledge, healing, and hope would endure.

The Apothecary Museum

This museum contained specimens from early druggist into the 1950’s when the last physician passed. Upon the structure was picked up with all of its belongings and moved to the current historical site. The apothecary specimens have been added too, but the physician office is as it was left.

The apothecary was a small building in the shape of a rectangle. Walking in was the apothecary and general store area. Walking back into the apothecary and through the door you entered the small doctor’s office and patient examination area. Past that through the back door was the apothecary garden.

The apothecary was both a general store, apothecary, and physician office.

Only the doctor’s horse was allowed in town for sanitation. People would look for the horse to see if the doctor was in.

This was the first double show globe I have seen in person, and it was beautiful. In addition, due to the record keeping of this town we also learn that the red globe in the deep past signified sickness in a village. Other colors would replace the red when sickness subsided. In addition, these colors and globes were used to signify medicine and healing for persons in the population that were unable to read.

On the left is a pill maker. Again, we have learned that medicine at this time was quaint, but as we have been uncovering, dosages were measured and provided in pills based on width and length of a rolled medicine.

On the right is an egg holder. For patients, they were able to pay in eggs. They would lift up the lid and place their eggs in the holder.

This apothecary has many specimens of drugs throughout years and decades of pharmacy.

Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana)

The vibrant purple healer of the Southern woodlands

The American Beautyberry is a native deciduous shrub found across the southeastern United States, from North Carolina and Virginia through the deep South and into parts of Texas and Arkansas. By late summer, it becomes unmistakable: its long, arching branches are crowned with clusters of luminous purple berries that seem to glow like strings of polished amethyst.

For centuries, beautyberry has been a plant of survival and comfort. Indigenous tribes such as the Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole were among the first to unlock its potential, using it for insect protection, medicinal purposes, and even spiritual practices. Later, Appalachian settlers and early physicians carried this knowledge forward, blending it into the fabric of colonial herbal medicine.

Constituents and Medicinal Actions

Beautyberry’s power lies in its complex blend of phytochemicals found in both its leaves and berries.

The leaves contain potent insect-repelling terpenoids, which make it ideal for natural bug protection:

• Callicarpenal – a unique compound proven to repel mosquitoes and ticks, rivaling DEET in effectiveness in certain studies.

• Intermedeol – a sesquiterpene alcohol that adds to its mosquito-repelling action and has mild anti-inflammatory effects.

• Beta-caryophyllene – a terpene known for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

• Luteolin & Apigenin (flavonoids) – antioxidants that help reduce skin irritation and oxidative stress when applied topically.

While primarily valued for their visual appeal and wildlife nourishment, the berries also contain a variety of beneficial compounds:

• Anthocyanins – these rich purple pigments have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, making them valuable for skin and cellular health.

• Flavonoids – including quercetin and kaempferol, which help strengthen capillaries and promote healing.

• Phenolic acids – such as caffeic acid, contributing to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Traditional Uses

1. Natural Insect Repellent

   • Historically, settlers and Native tribes would crush fresh leaves and rub them directly on exposed skin to keep away mosquitoes and biting flies.

   • Today, a more refined version can be made by steeping the leaves in hot water, letting the infusion cool, and combining it 1:1 with witch hazel. A few drops of essential oils such as lavender or cedarwood may be added for extra potency and aroma.

2. Skin Healing & Toners

   • The antioxidant-rich berries can be steeped into aloe vera gel, where a single berry turns the gel a beautiful purple while infusing it with plant pigments and flavonoids.

   • This makes a soothing facial toner or skin serum for sun-exposed or irritated skin.

3. Minor Anti-inflammatory Uses

   • Beta-caryophyllene and intermedeol in the leaves make them mildly anti-inflammatory.

   • Poultices of freshly bruised leaves were sometimes applied to swollen insect

While deeply valued by humans, beautyberry also serves as a vital food source for birds and wildlife in autumn and early winter. Its berries are eagerly consumed by cardinals, mockingbirds, and deer, supporting the ecosystem long after many other food sources have disappeared.

Beautyberry thrives in partial shade and well-drained soils, often found along woodland edges, sandy coastal plains, and old homestead paths.

• North Carolina: It is particularly abundant along the coastal plains, including areas near Beaufort and historic maritime forests.

• West Virginia & Virginia: Found less densely but still present in old field margins and clearings.

Ipecacuanha (Carapichea ipecacuanha)

The little root with powerful effects

In the 1700s, when fevers, stomach ailments, and deadly epidemics swept through colonial towns, few remedies were as prized, or as potent as Ipecacuanha. Known simply as “Ipecac”, this South American root became a staple of every apothecary shelf, from the great cities of Europe to the modest frontier shops of the Carolina coast.

By 1759, a small jar labeled Pulvis Ipecacuanhae would have stood beside Cinchona bark, sassafras, and calomel in Dr. Hellin’s Beaufort apothecary, ready to be measured carefully by hand. It’s fine, reddish-brown powder carried a reputation for saving lives, and for being dangerously powerful when misused.

Ipecacuanha’s name comes from the Tupi language, spoken by Indigenous peoples of Brazil:

“i-pe-kaa-guéne” meaning “roadside sick-making plant.”

These communities had long used the root to treat severe dysentery, a disease that caused dehydration and death during outbreaks.

European traders encountered Ipecac in the 1600s, and by the late 17th century, it was being exported to Europe and, eventually, the American colonies.

By the 18th century, it had become a medical staple, known for its ability to induce vomiting, stimulate the bowels, and treat dangerous intestinal infections.

Ipecacuanha’s strength lies in its alkaloids, concentrated in the dried root:

• Emetine – The primary active compound.

  • Actions: Strong emetic (vomiting-inducing), expectorant, and anti-protozoal.

  • Historically vital for treating amoebic dysentery and intestinal parasites.

• Cephaeline – Slightly more irritating than emetine.

  • Actions: Stimulates vomiting and intestinal cleansing.

• Psychotrine – A minor alkaloid contributing to its overall action.

• Tannins and Glycosides – Added astringent and digestive effects, helping to tone the intestinal lining.

These compounds made Ipecac both life-saving and dangerous, requiring careful dosing by a skilled apothecary for:

1. Treatment of Dysentery

   • In a time when contaminated water was common, outbreaks of dysentery were frequent and deadly.

   • Ipecac was one of the only effective treatments available.

   • It was typically ground into powder and given in small doses to stimulate the gut and fight the infection.

2. Inducing Vomiting (Emetic)

   • Used to purge the stomach of poisons, spoiled food, or “bad humors.”

   • Colonial physicians believed that clearing the stomach was a vital step in restoring balance to the body.

3. Respiratory Relief

   • In very diluted doses, Ipecac acted as an expectorant, loosening thick mucus in cases of pneumonia or bronchitis.

Colonial Apothecary Techniques:

• Pulvis Ipecacuanhae (Powder):

The root was dried and ground into a fine, reddish powder, then dosed carefully by weight.

• Ipecac Wine:

The powdered root was infused in wine, creating a liquid preparation for easier administration.

• Combination Remedies:

Ipecac was often combined with opium (for pain and diarrhea) or with calomel (mercury chloride) in early compound prescriptions.

Even in the 1700s, apothecaries like Dr. Hellin understood that too much Ipecac could be lethal.

• High doses caused violent vomiting and dehydration.

• Moderate doses were life-saving for dysentery.

• Low doses helped as an expectorant for lung conditions.

This balance made Ipecac both trusted and feared, a true testament to the skill of the colonial druggist.

Today, Ipecac is best remembered as Syrup of Ipecac, once kept in households to induce vomiting in cases of poisoning.

However, modern medicine now discourages its home use due to risks of misuse and complications.

IN FACT, IT IS NO LONGER LEGAL TO BE SOLD.

This medicine and knowledge have been removed from frontline providers.

Current Status in the U.S.

• Syrup of Ipecac was once OTC and commonly kept in households.

• The FDA no longer recommends its use for poisonings because:

  1. Research showed that vomiting after ingestion does not improve outcomes in most poisoning cases.

  2. There’s a risk of complications, like aspiration (vomit entering the lungs) or excessive fluid loss.

  3. Activated charcoal and modern emergency care are considered safer and more effective.

• Manufacturing was largely discontinued in the U.S. around 2010.

• Today, most pharmacies no longer stock it, and poison control centers explicitly advise against using it at home.

If it is available at all, it typically:

• Requires a prescription for specialized use, such as in certain hospital or research settings.

• Is not sold OTC to the general public.

Modern Poisoning Protocol

If someone ingests a toxic substance:

1. Do NOT induce vomiting.

2. Call Poison Control immediately: 1-800-222-1222 (U.S.).

The Wallace brothers originally ran a general merchandise business in Statesville, but shortly after the war, they began accepting medicinal herbs, roots, barks, and berries in barter as payment for goods. By the early 1870s, they expanded this into a full-fledged botanical enterprise, employing famed botanist Mordecai E. Hyams* as manager.

The Wallace Brothers’ herbarium gained global recognition through exhibitions:

• At the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, they displayed 300 varieties of medicinal fruits, 125 moss types, 200 kinds of wood, 400 boxes of roots, and 600 framed medicinal plants, winning a gold medal.

They repeated their success at the 1878 Paris Exposition and later showcased at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

The Herbarium began the decline in the late 1880’s. The reasons were several. First, Hyams retired in the late 1880s, and second the financial downturn during the Panic of 1893 pushed the Wallace Brothers into bankruptcy by 1895. In addition, the rise of synthetic pharmaceuticals, like Aspirin in 1899, further reduced demand for botanical medicines, even though ginseng remained valuable (and still does to this day).

Yet, their impact endured. A highway historical marker now honors the Wallace Brothers’ herbarium as the largest herbarium in the world by 1890, marking its location at the heart of Statesville’s commercial district. In addition, the Wallace Brothers work fostered an enduring tradition of botanical collection and trade in North Carolina and beyond.

Why This Matters

Statesville’s botanical trade was more than commerce, it was a lifeline linking mountain communities with global markets, and a chapter in the story of American scientific and entrepreneurial ingenuity. The Wallace Brothers and Mordecai Hyams embodied a blend of local know-how, immigrant drive, botanical passion, and business smarts that made Statesville a crossroads of medicine, trade, and the natural world.

The Dark Side of Overharvesting

Herbs and roots have always been our medicine chest, but history reminds us that even gifts of the earth can be taken too greedily. In the 1800s, the Appalachian Mountains were combed by foragers gathering ginseng, goldenseal, bloodroot, and black cohosh. (This is why you hear me speak of this so often on my walks). Traders paid in salt, cloth, or kerosene, and the plants flowed out of the hills in sacks and barrels. By the late 19th century, Statesville, NC, was shipping tons of dried botanicals around the world.

Medicine Turned Commodity

What began as a practice of stewardship, taking only what was needed for family or neighbor shifted into an international market. Apothecaries in Europe, Asia, and America demanded roots in quantities never seen before. Each plant became less a healing ally and more a commodity. Ginseng, once abundant along forest streams, grew scarce. Goldenseal, with its golden rhizomes, was nearly harvested into absence. I believe this also allowed for a foothold of synthetic medicines to take hold, as I was taught in pharmacy school there were not enough plants to treat people.

Loss of Knowledge, Loss of Plant

Overharvesting is more than empty hillsides. It severs traditions. When a child could no longer find ginseng where their grandparents once dug, they lost not just a plant, but a story, a lesson, a prayer of thanks. The web between people and plant thinned. The wisdom of restraint, of leaving the first plant, and of never taking the last, was often forgotten in the chase for profit.

Lessons for Today

Many of these herbs remain threatened, their names now on conservation watchlists. The dark side of overharvesting is that it trades tomorrow’s medicine for today’s gain. But the story does not end in loss. Communities of herbalists, gardeners, and wildcrafters are restoring these plants, cultivating ginseng under forest canopies, reseeding goldenseal, and teaching harvest with reverence rather than greed. That is what is taught at Truth Apothecary as well.

In truth, overharvesting is not just history, it is a cautionary tale. To be a keeper of the apothecary is to take wisely, to give back, and to remember that healing cannot come from an empty forest.

*Mordecai Elisha Hyams (1833–1909) was a Jewish botanist and collector whose career left a remarkable imprint on 19th-century medicine and trade. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he developed a passion for plants early on and by the 1870s became the manager of the Wallace Brothers’ Botanic Depot in Statesville, North Carolina. From there, he organized collecting expeditions into the Appalachian Mountains, trading with farmers and foragers for ginseng, roots, barks, and herbs that would be processed and sold worldwide. Hyams not only curated one of the largest herbariums in existence—earning gold medals at international exhibitions—but also bridged traditional Appalachian plant knowledge with the emerging global botanical drug market. His work shows how science, commerce, and folk healing converged in the Carolina Piedmont during the 1800s. 1

The Moravians believed tending the garden was holy work, as much a prayer as the hymns sung in the meeting house. These herbs would be dried and set aside for teas, tinctures, and poultices to ease fever, soothe a child’s cough, or dress the wound of a weary traveler. The garden was not only food for the body but medicine for the spirit of the community.

Later that afternoon, Matthias carried a small basket of fresh horehound and comfrey leaves into Salem’s square, where the doctor’s apothecary stood. Its shelves were lined with glass jars of colored oils, stoneware crocks of ointments, and drawers filled with roots and seeds. Dr. Bonn, the town’s physician and apothecary, greeted him warmly.

“Brother Matthias,” the doctor said, weighing dried valerian root on a brass scale. “Your garden has kept us well supplied this year.”

Together they laid out the plants. Horehound for cough syrup, comfrey for salves to knit the skin, lemon balm for tea to calm restless hearts. The apothecary noted which herbs would be steeped in brandy, which simmered into syrups, and which powdered fine for pills.

For the Moravians, medicine was not hidden behind locked cabinets. It was shared in the kitchens, the gardens, and the doctor’s shop alike. A sick neighbor might receive a pot of balm tea, or a jar of spruce beer brewed to strengthen the blood. The apothecary was both physician and pharmacist, but every household was expected to know the plants, to steward the garden, and to trust God’s provision in the green world.

That evening, Matthias returned home as the sun fell low over the Wachovia settlement. His hands smelled of resin and mint. He had done his work: tending the garden, carrying its gifts to the apothecary, and keeping alive the Moravian conviction that medicine was not separate from daily life, but woven into every furrow of soil and every prayer of the heart.

Bethabara’s Medicinal Garden: A Colonial Pharmacy Reborn (Winston Salem, NC)

In October 1756, Dr. Hans Martin Kalberlahn, the first Moravian physician in Bethabara, designed and planted what is recognized as the first European medicinal herb garden in America. This plot, known as the Hortus Medicus, holds profound historical importance. By June 1761, Brother Christian Gottlieb Reuter, a Moravian surveyor and naturalist, documented the garden’s layout in detailed hand-drawn maps. His renderings have guided modern reconstructions of the garden’s original design.

The medicinal garden was inspired by medieval abbey gardens; the medicinal garden was meticulously arranged into six symmetrical beds surrounding a central shelter or pavilion. This layout underscored both practicality and spiritual harmony. It contained more than fifty varieties of herbs, chosen for their therapeutic qualities, ranging from digestive soothers to treatments for common 18th-century ailments like intestinal worms, fevers, and headaches.

As discussed in the fictional character above, the Moravians embraced a holistic approach: wellness and prevention were as important as physical healing, aligning with Hippocratic principles like “food is medicine and medicine is food.”

These plants were carefully cultivated and then processed by physician-apothecaries into teas, salves, tinctures, and decoctions, dispensed with guidance, much like early prescriptions. The garden also incorporated “strewing herbs”, such as mint and lavender, used to freshen interiors and repel pests, blending hygiene, comfort, and preventive care.

Bethabara Brewing of Beer in the 1700s: Medicine in a Mug

In the 1700s, a glass of beer was more than a social drink, it was medicine. At a time when water could not be trusted, and when apothecaries blended plants into daily life, beer became both nourishment and remedy.

Before modern sanitation, drinking water often carried disease. Fermentation, however, transformed grain, yeast, and water into a safer beverage. The alcohol and acidity killed harmful microbes, and the boiling of wort (the sweet liquid from malted grains) further purified it. To drink beer was, in many places, to drink health.

Beer of the 1700s was not the same as today’s crisp lagers. It was thick, hearty, and often lower in alcohol, closer to “small beer.” It provided calories, B vitamins, and minerals, acting like liquid bread. Workers, children, and even the ill were given small beer as daily sustenance, prescribed by physicians and apothecaries alike.

Hops were not the only plant used to flavor and preserve beer. Apothecaries and household brewers alike added herbs such as:

• Yarrow – believed to stop bleeding and aid digestion

• Juniper berries – used for kidney and urinary complaints

• Wormwood – a bitter tonic for the stomach

• Spruce tips – high in vitamin C, warding off scurvy

These herbal “gruits” infused beer with medicinal compounds. The brewer was, in many ways, a pharmacist.

Doctors and apothecaries often prescribed beer for ailments. It was used:

• For fevers – cooling and hydrating in small doses

• For digestion – bitter herbs stimulated the stomach

• For melancholy – beer lifted the spirit in a world where mood was linked to health

• For recovery – nourishing those too weak to eat solid food

Beer bridged the gap between kitchen and apothecary. It was brewed at home, in monasteries, and in early American colonies. George Washington himself recorded recipes for spruce beer to keep soldiers healthy. The mug, like the mortar and pestle, was a vessel of healing.

To drink beer in the 1700s was not indulgence, but often prescription. It was food, water, and pharmacy, fermented proof that medicine was once brewed on the hearth. The apothecary and the brewer worked side by side, teaching us that in every sip, history carries a trace of healing.

Bethabara is the site of the first known commercial brewery and distillery in North Carolina. This is the third brewer house, as fire destroyed the first two. This was completed in 1803. Brewing began in 1756.

These field trips are to bring history of medicine and life back into our daily lives. At Truth Apothecary our goal is to bring every nook and cranny of historical medicine to the surface to be again OUR medicinal Truth.

Behind the counter stood the druggist, who was also the town’s doctor, weighing powders on a brass scale and reaching for bundles of goldenrod hung from the rafters. For the nerves, he said with a steady smile. The apothecary was no ordinary shop—it was where healing met the hearth. Jars of pickled cucumbers and crocks of sauerkraut sat beside the medicines, reminders that vinegar could both preserve vegetables and draw medicine from plants.

Neighbors came with their needs: cloves to stud hams so they would keep through winter, cinnamon and allspice for spiced apple butter. In Old Salem, the doctor’s wisdom was not only in curing sickness, but in teaching the art of preserving both health and food through the changing seasons.

Old Salem, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, began in the mid-1700s when the Moravians, a Protestant group from central Europe settled in the Wachovia Tract. They were known for their deep faith, communal spirit, and careful record-keeping. The town of Salem was officially established in 1766 as the heart of Moravian life in the region.

• They built tidy streets with half-timbered houses, workshops, gardens, and their famed apothecary, which served as both pharmacy and doctor’s office.

• Moravians valued self-sufficiency, preserving food, growing herbs, baking bread, brewing beer, and making medicines were all part of their daily rhythm.

• Salem became known for craftsmanship, music, education, and devotion to community health.

Old Salem Today

Old Salem is now a living history museum and historic district. Visitors walk cobblestone streets lined with restored Moravian homes, shops, and gardens. Costumed interpreters demonstrate everyday life from the 18th and 19th centuries:

• The apothecary museum shows how early druggists prepared remedies from plants and minerals.

• Kitchens display food preservation techniques—root cellars, drying herbs, fermenting sauerkraut, and apple butter boiling in copper kettles.

• Bakeries fill the air with the scent of Moravian sugar cakes and cookies, just as they did centuries ago.

It feels like stepping back in time: the same gardens still grow heirloom vegetables, herbs, and medicinal plants; the same streets echo with stories of the settlers who built Salem out of both necessity and faith.

This apothecary was very interesting to me. As Moravians were potters, the way the apothecary was set up is different than I have seen before. Crocks were made and used in the apothecary.

Inside the Traveling Doctor’s Kit

When a country doctor or druggist made his rounds in the 18th and 19th centuries, he carried a small chest of medicines that were considered essential for nearly every ailment.

Wine & Brandy

• Used as tonics and restoratives, especially for the weak or faint.

• Brandy often served as both a stimulant and a solvent for tinctures.

• In a time before IV fluids, a sip of spirits was considered strengthening.

Turpentine

• Distilled from pine resin.

• Applied externally to wounds, bites, and sore muscles as a rubefacient (to draw blood to the surface).

• Taken internally (carefully) as a vermifuge for intestinal worms.

Sweet Oil (Olive Oil)

• A soothing base for liniments, ointments, and ear drops.

• Mixed with other herbs to ease digestive complaints or soften the skin.

Castor Oil (Ricinus communis)

• A famous purgative: one spoonful cleared the bowels.

• Given to children and adults alike as a “cleansing” medicine.

Laudanum

• Tincture of opium in alcohol.

• Relied upon for pain relief, cough suppression, and to calm restless sleep.

• Often the only option for severe pain.

Paregoric

• A milder opium preparation, flavored with camphor.

• Commonly used for children’s colic, diarrhea, and cough.

• Today remembered as both a comfort and a caution.

Ipecacuanha (Carapichea ipecacuanha)

• Root imported from South America.

• Used to induce vomiting in cases of poisoning or severe stomach distress.

• Also given in small doses as an expectorant for chest congestion.

• Of NOTE **Removed from use in early 2000s because the American Academy of Pediatrics warned against home use.

Medical Garden Layout

Food is Wealth

Visiting this museum, it is not lost that the preservation and growing of food was important to both the health and wealth of this community. The tendrils of preservations and growing built this village.

As the afternoon bells tolled, I stepped back into the sunlight of Old Salem. The cobbled streets and brick paths whispered of a time when the druggist was the doctor, when a jar of cloves preserved both health and ham, and when vinegar could hold a cucumber through winter or draw medicine from goldenrod.

In Salem, the line between food and pharmacy was never sharp, and both were part of the same daily care. To walk those streets today is to remember that medicine once lived in the garden, the kitchen, and the apothecary jar, and that preservation of food, of health, of knowledge is what truly carried families through the seasons.

In my 1854 Dispensatory Book physicians went into great discussions about the different types of wild lettuce. The agreement was that some wild lettuce has more latex sap, but that the clinical outcomes were similar.

Planting in my gardens, I choose the species Lactuca virosa. This species has the highest latex content, cold hardy, and has less spines on the leaves than spinosa. While wildcrafting, I choose what my land has.

When wildcrafting, the spine on the midrib is a great identifier. There are look-alikes that also have lettuce such as sow thistle. This plant does not have spines. In addition, watch the flowers as they turn from bright yellow into the seeds. Wild Lettuce has distinct pappus that to a trained eye allows another difference to be noted. The leaves prior to sending up its stalk are in a floret arrangement and can also be mistaken for Dandelion.

Historically, from as early as ancient Egypt and up through the 19th century, lactucarium (the milky latex) was used as a mild sedative–analgesic substitute for opium. In my 1800’s Dispensatory books, wild lettuce was recognized for treating insomnia, cough, nervous tension, and menstrual cramps. It was also used as a pain treatment and physicians have documented that pain can be controlled without the side effects of Laudanum.

Wild lettuce’s primary active compounds include lactucin and lactucopicrin, two sesquiterpene lactones with sedative and analgesic effects. These compounds act as an adenosine receptor agonist and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, modulating neurotransmission and delaying pain perception. This is very important in the pain pathway of the brain.

Dosing of a Wild Lettuce tincture or capsule will depend on the method of extraction. A milder version will be a tincture without concentration. Dosages may need to be higher to get full effect. Concentrated tinctures from either a liquid concentration or dehydrated concentration may need less product to achieve desired medication effect.

Start with lower dosages and increase as needed as this medication does work on the pain pathway. Possible side effects include indigestion, jitteriness, drowsiness, allergic reactions (especially in individuals with latex allergy- very rare as this latex is not the same as the rubber latex. If you have a concern, place a small amount on the inside of your wrist to see if a reaction occurs), urinary retention, and sympathetic overactivity at higher doses

Combining wild lettuce with sedatives, alcohol, or antihistamines may increase central nervous system depression; use of eye‑related drugs may exacerbate angle‑closure glaucoma risks due to cholinesterase inhibition. Always check before starting this herb if you have a disease state or are on another medication.

In 1790, the humid trails of eastern North Carolina wove through pine forests and swamps, where Dr. Elias Hawthorn, born and raised in Duplin County, rode his faithful mare, Betsy. At thirty-five, Elias was lean, his hands rough from setting bones and treating fevers. His black leather bag held lancets, laudanum, a worn copy of Buchan's Domestic Medicine1, and herbs from his medical garden—a tidy patch beside his small office, brimming with sassafras, feverfew, and chamomile. The air buzzed with mosquitoes, thick with the threat of fever season.

Elias was the only doctor for miles, serving a fifty-mile radius or more. Before dawn, a boy’s knock roused him—a call from the Tatum farm. Sarah Tatum, mother of five, was feverish after childbirth, her newborn too weak to feed. Elias quickly entered his small office next to his home, grabbed his bag stuffed with fresh herbs from his garden, and rode out under a gray, rain-heavy sky.

The Tatum cabin was modest, cornfields, a tobacco patch, and a sagging chimney. Inside, Sarah lay on a straw mattress, her face flushed and sweat-soaked. Her husband, Jonah, stood twisting his hat, worry in his eyes. The room smelled of woodsmoke and fear. Elias checked Sarah’s pulse—childbed fever, he suspected, recalling lessons from the College of Philadelphia’s medical school, where he’d studied under Dr. Benjamin Rush. He also had seen this with his mother growing up, had been the midwife of the area. He mixed a tincture of willow bark from his garden and a touch of opium to ease her pain, sending Jonah’s daughter to boil water for a feverfew poultice.

Jonah grumbled about payment; cash was rare, and Elias often took hams or promises instead. He never pushed—pride ran deeper than want here. He stayed through the afternoon, cooling Sarah’s brow with a chamomile-soaked cloth from his stores, coaxing her to sip broth. The baby, frail but stubborn, finally latched after hours of effort. By dusk, Sarah’s fever held, but her breathing eased. Elias left Jonah instructions—keep her cool, change the linens, pray—and promised to return at dawn.

Riding home through the pines, Elias thought of his roots. Born in a Duplin cabin, he’d learned healing from his midwife mother before studying medicine in Philadelphia. Back home, he’d planted his medical garden, its herbs grounding his practice in the soil of his youth. The next morning, seeing Sarah sitting up, cradling her child, he felt a quiet pride. Elias Hawthorn, no grand physician, just a country doctor, stitched his community together, one call at a time, under the vast North Carolina sky.

The Country Doctor Museum Bailey, NC

Visiting this museum in eastern North Carolina was an honor. I am going to walk you through from my eyes and show some of what I was able to learn.

This museum is the oldest museum in the United States that has collected, archived, and operates to show the history of health care.

To enter the museum a building was built to house the gift shop and introduction to the museum with artifacts and many books. In fact, these books can be checked out and used on site. It is a toured visit, and I was honored to be led through the museum by a young hopeful medical student.

The first physician we spoke about was Dr. Henderson. He was known to have delivered over 6,000 babies. Dr. Henderson was also a farmer. He would give a cow to a family he determined was in need of sustenance, and in exchange ask for the calf to be provided back to him so he could continue to give to his community.

Often during this time carriages were outfitted for doctors as they were known to be traveling so much. They were often higher from the ground to help them go wherever they needed to. In addition, a special place was built in the back to have a location for them to put their doctor bags. I also learned that white sheets would be tied to a tree or pole near a home to let the doctor know they were needed at that home.

Doctors were embedded into the community. They would often start early in a small office and then leave to go out into their community to continue to treat patients. Doctor bags and travel medicine was important.

Two early doctor practices were moved from other locations in the state and built together to make the next part of the museum.

This office was built onto a plantation home from a plantation owner when his daughter married the newly minted Doctor. The father did not want his daughter to be moved away, so in exchange he built this office onto the home so they could live in the home and be a physician to the county.

The inside of this part of the doctor practice was where patients would have been tended to for a visit. The museum has moved an apothecary into this space.

Medicine at this time often involved bloodletting. The museum had a display of both leeches and blood-letting tools. This revolved around the medicine of Hippocrates that was based on the balance of the four humors. They were blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Disease resulted from imbalance, treated through diet, lifestyle, and interventions like bloodletting.

The museum did a fabulous job showing how pills were made. First the herbs were placed in a mortar and pestle and ground fine, adding either honey or lard or both as it was mixed. When it was ground into a fine ball, it was rolled and measured. This would tell you the amount of medication that was in a pill as the length and amount per number of tablets made would be calculated. This may not be as accurate as today’s measurement, but it definitely is evidence against the common teachings that medicine at this time was not elegant or smart.

Bottles and Pills at this time often were made with sharp edges and different colors or shapes as a way to communicate with a patient as illiteracy was common. In fact, sharp edges or many edges on a bottle signified a ‘poison’ medicine. In addition, in the example below the black pills are in the shape of a coffin. These were mercury pills.

After exiting this room, the museum meandered into the office was of the country doctor. This would have been where he recorded patient histories, kept inventory, and also kept his accounting books. My favorite part of this was looking at the accounting books. As you can see, this doctor took payments that were not only monetary. My favorites were chickens and a big carrot.

Some doctors at this time had a sick room as either part of their home or office. In addition, wealthier families also had a room set aside for sick family members to be tended too.

After finishing in the museum inside, I walked outside to enter the medicinal gardens.

Country Medical Doctor Garden- Museum Layout

“Tucked behind the museum’s original building is the Mercer Reeves Hubbard Medicinal Garden, named after an herbalist and founder of the garden. Designed by the late Elizabeth Lawrence, an author and landscape architect, the garden is patterned after a botanic garden in Padua, Italy, one of the oldest medicinal gardens still in use” 2

Country Medical Doctor Garden- Museum Layout

“It was an honor to show you this museum through my eyes. A time when medicine was part of the community it served”

In the crisp autumn of 1805, Alexandria, Virginia, thrived as a bustling port town along the Potomac River. Cobblestone streets rang with the clatter of horse-drawn carts and the lively calls of merchants, the air rich with the scents of tar, tobacco, and fresh bread from King Street’s taverns.

William Harper, a 30-year-old cooper, began his day at dawn in his workshop near the waterfront. His skilled hands shaped oak staves into barrels for tobacco and flour shipments destined for London and the West Indies. Alexandria’s docks buzzed with schooners unloading sugar, rum, and fine cloth, and William’s barrels were essential to the trade. He took pride in knowing his work sailed across oceans.

By mid-morning, William strolled to Market Square, where the weekly market hummed with activity. Farmers from Fairfax County offered bushels of apples, potatoes, and pumpkins, while vendors sold woven baskets and fresh fish from the Potomac. The square was a vibrant mix of merchants, artisans, and townsfolk, all caught up in the town’s lively commerce. On his way back, William stopped at Stabler’s Apothecary on Fairfax Street. Edward Stabler, a Quaker known for his integrity, ran the shop, its shelves neatly lined with glass bottles of laudanum, herbal tinctures, and camphor. The air smelled of dried lavender and mint. William purchased a vial of peppermint oil for his wife Mary’s headaches, chatting briefly with Stabler about the crisp fall weather and the growing demand for medicinal herbs.

At noon, William joined Mary at their modest home on Duke Street. A skilled seamstress, Mary mended waistcoats for merchants’ wives, saving for a larger home. Over a meal of cornbread and roasted vegetables, they discussed the peppermint oil, President Jefferson’s policies, and rumors of a new road linking Alexandria to the western frontier. Mary, ever practical, hoped the road would bring more trade to the town.

In the afternoon, William delivered barrels to the warehouse of Robert McCrea, a wealthy merchant whose brick mansion overlooked the river. McCrea’s daughter, Abigail, 16, practiced her harpsichord, her music floating through open windows. Bored with etiquette lessons and her father’s talk of marrying her to a Richmond planter, Abigail often wandered past Stabler’s Apothecary, curious about the exotic remedies and sailors’ stories of distant ports.

As dusk fell, the taverns, like Gadsby’s, filled with ship captains, artisans, and laborers, including William’s friend John, a dockhand with dreams of settling in the Ohio Valley. Over pints of ale, they debated trade disputes with Britain and the promise of western expansion, the tavern’s warmth a contrast to the cool night air. Outside, dockworkers loaded ships under lantern light, their shouts mingling with the creak of rigging.

By nightfall, William returned home, the stars bright over the Potomac. Mary, soothed by the peppermint oil, mended by candlelight, humming a tune. They shared a quiet moment, grateful for small comforts like Stabler’s remedies in a town pulsing with ambition, where every barrel, stitch, and ship shaped the story of a young nation forging its path.

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum History

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a collection of artifacts of a time when pharmacists were the makers of medicine for a community. Remember, it was not until 1930 that a prescription was required from a physician to provide medication to a patient. Patients could go straight to the apothecary for an ailment and be treated with recipes of the owner of the apothecary.

The business began in 1792 when Edward Stabler moved to Alexandria. As I learned at the museum, the actual apothecary opened in 1805. By 1829, he had purchased the entire block and was not only an apothecary but a manufacturer of apothecary items. At this time this included oils, perfumes, medicines, paints, varnish, hair dye, soaps, perfumes, surgical and dental equipment, grooming supplies, window glass, combs and brushes, and other home and personal need items.

When Edward Stabler passed his son William continued the business and grew it across 500 pharmacies in the area, with the original location manufacturing. He also included his family including his brother-in-law John Leadbeater who was also a trained apothecary and dentist.

The name of the Apothecary became The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary.

The pharmacy was open until May of 1933 when it declared bankruptcy again. It had once in 1916 worked to gain bankruptcy protection and reorganize, but with the death of Edward Stabler, new pharmacy regulations and competition, and the Great Depression the pharmacy could not continue on. It is because of the citizens of Alexandria who wanted to keep the history of pharmacy alive, they purchased it at auction and began the Landmark Society.

To place the pharmacy into a time frame. This pharmacy was open from the presidency of George Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt. What a legacy!

Regulations that changed for Pharmacy starting in the 1900s

In the early 1900s, the regulatory landscape for pharmacies was evolving, and certain laws enacted around that time could have indirectly impacted pharmacy operations.

From my research these are the regulations that were new to old apothecary businesses. These changing regulations along with the impending Great Depression was marching this longtime apothecary to bankruptcy:

Harrison Narcotics Tax Act (1914, Enforced by 1916)

This act was enacted on December 17, 1914, and fully implemented by 1916. The Harrison Narcotics Tax Act was a federal law regulating the production, importation, and distribution of opiates and coca products. Prior to this time, it was not a controlled item, just like you would order tea, for example. This act required pharmacists, physicians, and others who prescribed, dispensed, or distributed these substances to register with the federal government and pay a special dispensing tax, as well as maintain detailed records of each transaction. Prescriptions for narcotics were now required, except in specific cases, and maintenance doses for addicts were restricted unless intended to cure addiction.1

In my expert opinion, this act would have increased administrative burdens, including record-keeping and compliance with federal oversight. Pharmacies had to register with the Treasury Department and ensure all narcotic transactions were documented in accordance with the law. The administrative costs would have increased at the same time as revenue loss from decreasing sales of opium-based products like laudanum, which were common in the early 20th century. This would have been considered a poison register.

The act also curtailed the sale of patent medicines containing narcotics, which were a major revenue source for some druggists. Pharmacies that failed to adapt to these requirements risked fines or closure 2

Pure Food and Drug Act (1906, Ongoing Enforcement in 1916)

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, enforced by the Bureau of Chemistry (predecessor to the FDA), required accurate labeling of foods and drugs to prevent misbranding and adulteration. Unfortunately, there were bad actors in the patent drug market that were not using safe ingredients and even using ingredients that no one knew were in the bottles! A notable example from 1916 was the FDA’s misbranding charges against Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup, a popular remedy containing morphine, which highlighted the risks of unregulated patent medicines. 3

Unfortunately, the apothecary individuals that were notably safe and trained with their medications were also included into all of the regulations. Even with their safe formulations, these businesses were now unable to provide the medications in the way they once had.

Defense of the Realm Act (DORA) and International Context (1916, UK Influence)

While primarily a British regulation, the Defense of the Realm Act (DORA) of 1914, with specific orders in 1916, restricted the sale of drugs like cocaine, opium, and morphine to military personnel unless prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. This was in response to wartime concerns about drug misuse among soldiers. The London Gazette in 1916 also noted a proclamation prohibiting the importation of cocaine and opium into the UK, reflecting global trends toward tighter drug control. Although DORA was a UK law, it’s relevant because the U.S. was influenced by international drug control efforts, particularly through treaties like the International Opium Convention4

State and Local Regulations

Pharmacy regulation in 1916 was primarily handled at the state level, as the federal government’s role was limited to interstate commerce under the Tenth Amendment. By 1914, 46 states had regulations on cocaine, and 29 had laws against opium, morphine, and heroin, indicating a patchwork of state-level controls. Virginia likely had its own pharmacy board regulations, requiring licensure and adherence to standards for dispensing drugs. 5

In addition, the early 20th century saw the rise of larger pharmacy chains and drugstores, which could better absorb regulatory costs. Independent apothecaries, like a hypothetical Stabler’s Apothecary in 1916 Alexandria, faced competition from these larger entities, which could comply with regulations more easily due to economies of scale. Add on the disruption of supply chain due to the global disruptions from World War I.

Personal Walk through the Museum

Walking up the museum, a connoisseur of old pharmacy will note the beautiful windows with the colored apothecary jars. This would have signaled to a community a medicine maker was at this location.

This is the part of the apothecary business where all trades were made. Many bottles of goods to share with people, along with medicines that were made by the business itself.

The upstairs of the museum was the compounding area. This to me was the spectacular component of this museum as we are able to look at a moment in time that has rarely been documented. Raw ingredients, gums, charcoals, volatile oils, corks, minerals, and other ingredients all stored in an area that they were once worked and made into medicine. Ingredients from all over the world shipped into port and stored in this manufacturing block of the apothecary.
