Just weeks ago, Putin declared that the Su-57 was “the best fighter jet in the world.”

Yesterday, it crashed near Moscow.

Russia says it was a technical malfunction. Ukraine says it studied the software, operating procedures, and vulnerabilities of Russian air defenses, then manipulated the system into treating its own Su-57 as an enemy aircraft. And once more, yet another example of what this war has demonstrated again and again. Russia keeps fighting the last war while Ukraine keeps inventing the next one.

Russia’s answer to almost every military problem is the same. Build more tanks. Produce more missiles. Build more aircraft. Send more men. It still believes victory belongs to the side with the largest stockpiles and the deepest reservoir of manpower. Russia keeps throwing fresh meat at the front. As a result, CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently said U.S. intelligence indicates that newly arrived Russian recruits survive an average of only 20 to 30 minutes after reaching frontline combat positions. Ukraine, facing an enemy with far greater resources, has had to find another way to fight.

And fight it does.

Ukraine sank the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet without a conventional navy. It forced the Black Sea Fleet out of much of the Black Sea with maritime drones. It transformed inexpensive FPV drones into weapons that militaries around the world are scrambling to understand and imitate. It struck strategic bombers at air bases Russia believed were safely beyond Ukraine’s reach. It has fused commercial technology, software, artificial intelligence, drones, and electronic warfare into a new way of fighting that will be studied by military academies around the world for generations. Ukrainian officials say indigenous laser weapons are nearing operational deployment, another reminder that Ukraine continues to push into areas that many larger countries are only beginning to explore.

Every few months, Ukraine reveals another capability that military experts either dismissed or simply failed to imagine. Russia keeps building bigger weapons while Ukraine keeps finding smarter ways to defeat them.

With the downing of Russia’s pride and joy, it seems that the world does not need to build a better fighter to destroy Russia’s “best fighter jet.”

It just needs Ukrainians.

Ukraine did not suddenly discover its need for air defense after Iran. For years it has been asking for Patriot systems while Russia pursued a strategy of systematically destroying the conditions necessary for civilian life through sustained missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Lviv, and dozens of other cities. The purpose has never been purely military. Russia has sought to make ordinary life impossible, to exhaust Ukrainian society, and to advance its genocide against Ukrainians by destroying the people, institutions, and conditions that sustain Ukrainian national existence.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has built one of the most sophisticated integrated air defense networks in the world under wartime conditions. It has adapted Soviet-era systems, integrated Western platforms, developed electronic warfare capabilities, expanded mobile fire groups, and continually innovated under fire. The issue has never been Ukrainian dependence. The issue is the physics of ballistic missiles. Against Russia's most advanced missile attacks, Patriot systems remain among the very few proven means of interception.

That reality placed extraordinary power in Washington's hands. The Trump administration used that power not to strengthen the victim of aggression, but to withhold the very capability Ukraine needed to protect its civilian population from Russia's ballistic missile campaign. Restricting access to Patriot interceptors does more than diminish Ukraine's defensive capacity. It reinforces the logic underlying Russia's missile campaign by increasing the vulnerability of Ukrainian civilians while narrowing Kyiv's political freedom of action.

This week NATO gathers in Turkey while Russia continues its largest campaign of missile and drone attacks in months. The summit will produce familiar declarations affirming unity, deterrence, and collective defense. None of those principles acquires strategic significance unless it is expressed in industrial production, procurement, and delivery. Ukraine does not lack declarations. It lacks sufficient interceptors to stop ballistic missiles.

Now the administration and its apologists ask the public to accept depleted inventories as an explanation. Inventory levels did not produce this policy. The policy produced the shortage now invoked to justify it.

The shortage itself should surprise no one. A serious military alliance confronted by a prolonged high-intensity war would inevitably discover that decades of peacetime production assumptions were inadequate. The appropriate response is not to ration support to the victim of aggression. It is to reorganize industrial capacity around strategic necessity. Production must expand, procurement must accelerate, allied stockpiles must be coordinated, and Ukraine's air defense must become a permanent NATO responsibility rather than a recurring subject of political negotiation.

Russia's strategy has remained remarkably consistent since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. It has sought to destroy Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, exhaust its population, and persuade the West that sustaining Ukrainian resistance would eventually become politically and economically unsustainable. The question before NATO is whether the Alliance has finally recognized that industrial capacity is no longer a matter of economics alone but has become an essential instrument of deterrence. States that cannot produce the weapons required to sustain their own strategic commitments gradually surrender the initiative to those that can.

If the shortage is real, then the failure that produced it must be corrected immediately. Ukraine’s defense against Russian ballistic missiles cannot remain subject to excuses, delays, or political sabotage. This is not a matter of choice. It is a matter of necessity.

Such landmark anniversaries cannot simply be celebrations of age. They must be moments of self-examination, compelling a nation to ask whether it has remained faithful to the principles that justified its existence in the first place.

The American Revolution rejected the prevailing idea that the state belongs to the ruler, that political power exists to enrich his family, and that public office may be converted into private wealth. The revolutionary proposition of 1776 was that government belongs to the people, that public office is a sacred trust, and that law restrains power rather than serving it.

Those principles are not self-executing. Every generation either preserves them or surrenders them.

That is why the events of the past week should have produced a constitutional crisis.

According to The New York Times, President Trump personally helped secure a strategic mining agreement with Kazakhstan involving one of the world's largest untapped tungsten deposits while his administration supported preliminary applications for as much as $1.6 billion in taxpayer-backed financing. Companies connected to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump reportedly stand to benefit from the venture.

Almost simultaneously came financial disclosures showing extraordinary wealth, measured in billions of dollars, flowing into Trump family cryptocurrency ventures while the administration pursued policies widely viewed as favorable to that industry and to the expansion of the family's personal wealth.

Taken together, these reports reveal something far more significant than two unrelated controversies. Foreign policy, national security, taxpayer-backed financing, financial regulation, and digital assets all appear capable of intersecting with the financial interests of the President's own family. A presidency in which public power and private enrichment increasingly converge is precisely what a constitutional republic was designed to prevent.

Yet what should be producing national outrage has instead produced little more than another news cycle.

Where are the hearings? Where are the subpoenas? Where is the independent investigation? Where is the institutional alarm that should accompany even the appearance that presidential power may be advancing the financial interests of the President's own family? Journalists investigate. Editorial boards object. A handful of elected officials issue statements. Then Washington moves on, as though this were simply another unpleasant controversy rather than a test of whether the Republic still possesses the capacity to defend itself.

J.D. Vance recently remarked that Watergate would last only twelve hours today. He seemed to believe he was exposing the injustice of Nixon's forced resignation. Instead, he exposed the political culture that now shields power from accountability. Every scandal is buried beneath the next one. Public attention fragments while outrage dissipates. Citizens become inured to conduct that previous generations would have regarded as intolerable.

Too many Americans now recite the language of democracy and the great American experiment as civic liturgy, without belief, comprehension, or any willingness to defend the principles those words were meant to preserve. That is why Trump's America has so casually abandoned its historic role as a defender of democracy.

There is a profound historical irony in all of this.

Ukraine is fighting and dying for the very principles that many Americans have discarded, that government belongs to the people rather than to the ruler, that public office is a sacred trust rather than a family enterprise, and that the law restrains power instead of serving it.

Despite lazy assumptions to the contrary, Ukraine does not come to these principles as a supplicant to the American tradition. The Ukrainian political tradition rested upon the conviction that authority derived from free people rather than from rulers and that political power existed to serve the commonwealth rather than the officeholder. Those ideas found remarkable expression in Pylyp Orlyk's Constitution of 1710, which limited the authority of the Hetman, required representative consultation in matters of state, separated the public treasury from the Hetman's personal wealth, and affirmed that government was constrained by law rather than personal will. Long before modern democracy became fashionable, Ukrainians had already articulated a republican vision that rejected personal rule and the fusion of public office with private enrichment.

That is why Ukraine's struggle today is about far more than territory. Ukrainians are defending a political civilization founded upon the proposition that government belongs to the nation rather than to the ruler. They are defending principles that Americans once regarded as self-evident but now too often treat as little more than ceremonial language recited on national holidays.

If republican government is ultimately defined not by geography but by fidelity to its first principles, then anniversaries, fireworks, military parades, and patriotic speeches cannot determine who bears its mantle. That distinction belongs to those who remain faithful to the ideals that gave the Republic its moral legitimacy.

As America marks two hundred and fifty years since the Declaration of Independence, it is worth asking whether the mantle of those principles still rests most securely in the United States, or whether it has passed, however painfully, to the trenches of Ukraine, where men and women continue to risk everything for the belief that government exists to serve the people, that public office is a sacred trust, and that no ruler, however powerful, stands above the law.

Потім починається знайомий прийом. На читача вивалюють дати, цитати, прізвища, нібито архівні посилання та категоричні висновки. Але саме це й треба ставити під сумнів від самого початку. Звідки ці документи? Хто їх створив? Чи існують оригінали? Чи перевірено їхнє походження? Чи підтверджуються вони незалежними джерелами?

Велика кількість тверджень, які лише вдають із себе факти, ще не робить текст правдивим. Так само як велика кількість нібито архівних посилань не звільняє автора від обов’язку довести достовірність документів і коректність власних висновків.

Тарас Бульба-Боровець справді перебував у конфлікті з ОУН(б). Це історичний факт. Так само історичним фактом є існування внутрішніх конфліктів між різними течіями українського визвольного руху. Але проблема цього тексту полягає не в тому, що він порушує складну тему. Проблема полягає в тому, як саме він це робить.

Більшість наведених тверджень подані як остаточно встановлені факти, хоча значна частина таких сюжетів спирається на свідчення учасників конфлікту, пізніші спогади або документи, які самі потребують перевірки. Твердження про конкретні обставини захоплення, тривалі катування, мотиви ухвалення рішень та відповідальність окремих структур потребують набагато серйознішого обґрунтування, ніж просте посилання на існування певного документа чи чиєїсь пізнішої розповіді.

Не менш показовою є сама композиція тексту. Формально наприкінці автор згадує про «тисячі щирих патріотів». Але після всього нагромадження звинувачень читачеві фактично нав’язують один висновок. Нібито українські націоналісти були головною проблемою українського визвольного руху.

Саме тому виникає питання, чи справді метою цього тексту є дослідження конкретної трагедії, чи використання цієї трагедії для ширшої дискредитації українського націоналістичного руху. Це дуже стара технологія. Береться складний і болючий епізод, а потім він перетворюється на моральний вирок цілому рухові.

Тому моя реакція була б не «це неправда» і не «це правда».

Моя реакція значно простіша і водночас принциповіша. Покажіть джерела. Покажіть документи. Покажіть, які саме історики досліджували цей епізод і на підставі чого вони дійшли своїх висновків. І головне, покажіть, як саме була встановлена достовірність цих документів.

Історична наука не працює за принципом «знайшли папірець в архіві, отже це правда». Дослідники перевіряють походження документа, обставини його створення, ланцюг його збереження, авторство, наявність оригіналу чи лише копій, відповідність іншим незалежним джерелам, внутрішню логіку тексту та історичний контекст.

Посилання на Інститут історії України НАН України саме по собі не знімає цих питань. Я не ставлю під сумнів авторитет академічної установи. Але авторитет установи не є доказом конкретного твердження. Доказом є сукупність джерел, їхнє походження, якість їхньої перевірки та обережність висновків, які з них робляться.

І тут варто пам’ятати ще одну річ. Значна частина джерельної бази, з якою працюють дослідники цього періоду, формувалася в умовах радянської системи, яка десятиліттями вела боротьбу проти українського визвольного руху не лише зброєю, а й через історію, освіту, архіви та науку.

Особливо тому, що навколо ОУН, УПА, Бульби-Боровця, Мельника, Бандери та внутрішніх конфліктів визвольного руху десятиліттями працювала радянська пропаганда. Москва не просто поширювала брехню про український визвольний рух. Вона намагалася переконати самих українців не вірити власній пам’яті, власному досвідові та власному розумінню того, ким були люди, які боролися за Україну.

Ми знаємо про операції НКВД та МГБ під виглядом загонів УПА. Ми знаємо про так звані спецгрупи, які діяли під українськими повстанськими прапорами, тероризували цивільне населення, дискредитували підпілля та створювали підстави для подальших репресій. Ми знаємо про агентурне проникнення в підпілля. Ми знаємо про фабрикацію справ, свідчень і документів проти українського визвольного руху.

Саме тому будь-які архівні матеріали, особливо пов’язані зі спецслужбами, потребують не сліпої віри, а ретельної перевірки та співставлення з незалежними джерелами.

Невже ми вже це забули?

І хіба це не звучить знайомо сьогодні? Хіба ми не бачимо ту саму технологію тепер, коли Росія знову намагається переконати світ, що український спротив є «нацизмом», українська оборона є «провокацією», а українські герої є злочинцями?

І найтривожніше те, що подібні підходи дедалі частіше виходять за межі російської пропаганди. Ми бачимо, як історичні питання використовуються як політична зброя навіть у Польщі, країні, яка добре знає, що таке російський імперіалізм і знищення власної державності.

Коли окремі польські політики чи коментатори починають оцінювати сучасну Україну через вибірково прочитані й вирвані з контексту історичні сюжети, вони фактично повторюють рамку, яку Москва десятиліттями намагалася нав’язати всім нам.

Саме тому суперечка точиться не лише про минуле. Вона точиться про те, хто має право розповідати українську історію сьогодні і чи буде український народ суб’єктом власної історичної пам’яті.

І ще одне. Навіть якби кожен факт у цій статті виявився достовірним, це не змінює головного. Визвольні рухи оцінюють за їхню історичну роль загалом, а не через окремі трагічні чи злочинні епізоди. Ніхто не відмовляється від французького Опору, польської Армії Крайової чи інших національних рухів через внутрішні конфлікти або помилки окремих учасників.

Ми не маємо боятися складної історії. Але складність не можна перетворювати на інструмент самозречення.

Тоді це вже не історична пам’ять.

Це продовження старої чужої імперської війни за те, щоб українці зрікалися власних героїв.

Останнім часом атаки на українських історичних героїв помітно активізувалися. Петлюра. Коновалець. Мельник. Бандера. Шухевич. ОУН. УПА.

Це чергова спроба поставити під сумнів саму українську традицію спротиву.

Щоразу, коли Україна стає сильнішою, успішнішою або впливовішою, з’являється нова хвиля дискусій про те, кого українцям дозволено шанувати, а кого ні. Саме формулювання питання вже є показовим. Ніхто не пояснює французам, що вони не мають права шанувати Наполеона. Ніхто не вимагає від британців відмовитися від Черчилля. Ніхто не пропонує полякам викреслити Пілсудського зі своєї національної пам’яті. Такі вимоги регулярно висувають лише українцям.

Саме тому ця дискусія ніколи не стосується лише минулого. Вона стосується питання, яке супроводжує українську історію століттями. А саме чи має український народ право бути самостійним історичним суб’єктом, чи він повинен залишатися лише об’єктом чужих імперських проєктів?

Більшість українських діячів, які сьогодні опиняються під ударом, діяли без власної держави, без міжнародно визнаних кордонів і без гарантій безпеки для свого народу. Натомість вони протистояли імперіям, які заперечували саме право українців на політичне існування. Імперіям, які забороняли українську мову, ліквідовували українські інституції, закривали українські школи, переслідували українську церкву, депортували населення, ув’язнювали, катували й убивали тих, хто відмовлявся прийняти нав’язану ідентичність.

Український визвольний рух не був ще однією імперською силою, яка боролася за території, ресурси чи панування над іншими народами. Він виник як відповідь на багатовікове заперечення самого права українців на політичне існування. Українці не воювали за колонії. Не воювали за чужі землі. Не воювали за право керувати іншими народами. Вони воювали за право бути господарями у власному домі. І навіть без власної держави вони намагалися діяти як організована сила, що визнає закони та звичаї війни, а не як імперія, для якої право завжди було лише інструментом панування.

Набагато цікавішим за нескінченні звинувачення є інше питання. Як народ, позбавлений власної держави, зумів зберегти політичну тяглість протягом століть? Як після заборон української мови, ліквідації автономних інституцій, репресій, депортацій і Голодомору український проєкт не розчинився серед сильніших імперських структур?

Український досвід не має аналогів у Європі. Протягом поколінь український рух втрачав своїх провідників, організації, інституції та еліти. Його забороняли, переслідували, розстрілювали й депортували. Проте щоразу на місці знищеного виникало нове. Саме ця тяглість є одним із найважливіших фактів української історії.

Саме тому українська історія є такою незручною для її противників. Вона підважує не лише імперські аргументи, а й самі імперські амбіції та претензії на моральний авторитет. Українська тяглість робить імперську версію історії неправдоподібною.

Не менш промовистою є готовність частини українців долучатися до цього процесу. Щоразу знаходяться люди, які поспішають засудити власну історичну традицію раніше, ніж це зроблять її противники. Одними рухає старе почуття меншовартості, бажання виглядати прийнятними в очах зовнішнього спостерігача. Інші є звичайними яничарами, для яких чужа імперська оптика давно стала власною. У результаті предметом підозри стає не імперія, яка пригнічувала, а народ, який чинив спротив. Подібні люди завжди з’являлися саме тоді, коли посилювалися зовнішні кампанії проти українського руху.

Подібне вже відбувалося раніше. У своїх мемуарах Річард Ніксон називав українців однією з найвпливовіших етнічних груп у Сполучених Штатах. Саме в той період Московія активізувала кампанії з дискредитації українського визвольного руху. Що більшим ставав вплив українців, то активніше їх намагалися зробити неприйнятними. Минуло пів століття, змінилися прапори й назви держав, але не змінився механізм. Що помітнішою стає Україна, то активніше намагаються зробити неприйнятною її історію.

Саме тому під ударом опиняються Петлюра і Коновалець, Мельник і Бандера, Шухевич, ОУН і УПА. Українська історія залишається незручною саме тому, що вона спростовує імперські міфи не деклараціями, а самим фактом свого існування. Вона нагадує, що всі спроби знищити український політичний проєкт зазнали поразки. Історія України виявилася сильнішою за всі імперії, які намагалися її переписати.

Anyone with even a minimally functioning ability to analyze political systems should immediately recognize what is happening here because this is not some profound anti-war insight. It is the same old Russian absolution narrative, repackaged for an international cultural audience already preparing itself to forgive Russia before Russia has been forced to account for anything.

What makes the statement so revealing is not its appeal for peace, but the political work it performs. Responsibility is carefully lifted away from Russian society itself and concentrated entirely in the figure of the ruler. The war becomes Putin’s war rather than Russia’s war, as though Russian imperial culture, Russian institutions, Russian propaganda, and the millions of Russians who either support the invasion or have accommodated themselves to it exist outside the equation altogether.

Russia has always understood the usefulness of aesthetic rehabilitation. Catherine II was celebrated in Europe as an enlightened empress while she dismantled the Zaporizhian Sich, destroyed the Hetmanate, and tightened imperial rule over Ukrainian lands. Alexander II became the “Tsar Liberator” while his government issued the Valuev Circular and later the Ems Ukaz, restricting and suppressing publication, education, and public use of the Ukrainian language. Stalin became “Uncle Joe” for Western wartime audiences after the Holodomor and amid the machinery of terror. Andropov, the KGB chief who persecuted dissidents, was repackaged as a cultured modernizer who liked jazz, Scotch, and Western novels. Yeltsin was hailed as democratic Russia’s future, yet almost immediately after Ukraine declared independence, Russian officials were already making territorial claims against Ukraine. The costume changes; the structure does not. And that is precisely what is happening again now, as Russian cultural figures and so-called liberals are used to make Russia itself appear emotionally and morally recoverable before the empire behind them has been forced to answer for what it has done.

Putin did not create this tradition. He is a product of it, and whoever follows him will emerge from the same political culture unless Russia is fully and unconditionally defeated. That is precisely what remains so uncomfortable for many outside Ukraine because acknowledging it destroys the fantasy of easy rehabilitation. If the problem is systemic rather than personal, then Russia cannot simply rotate leadership, rename its violence, and return to civilized normalcy.

That is why the Cannes moment matters beyond Cannes. It is not an isolated cultural gesture, but part of a much larger permission structure now forming around Russia’s return.

That permission structure is becoming increasingly useful for Western institutions that appear eager to normalize Russia’s return to respectable international life before the war has even ended. From cultural festivals to sports bodies, from Venice Biennale conversations to chess federations, from film circles to academic forums, Russians are being gradually readmitted as though genocide can be bracketed while curators, juries, federations, and boards rediscover the importance of “dialogue.” We are watching the preparation for the post-Putin alibi for Russia in real time.

At some point Putin will leave the stage, whether through death, succession, internal removal, or simple biology. The pressure for normalization will accelerate almost immediately because the Western Russophiliac class is already waiting for a usable Russian liberal, a Navalnaya or some other polished figure, to present as proof that Russia can be welcomed back without ever confronting the imperial assumptions that made this war possible. It will not matter that these so-called liberals continue to speak from within the same Russian worldview, the same entitlement to define Ukraine, and the same refusal to understand Russian violence as a national and historical problem rather than a temporary deformation of governance.

And all of this proceeds from the same foundational lie embedded within statements like Zvyagintsev’s, namely that the war belongs uniquely to Putin rather than to the imperial political culture that made Putin possible.

Wars of annihilation are never sustained by one isolated ruler. They require institutions, propaganda, obedience, ambition, consent, and a population trained to regard imperial violence as normal. Putin did not personally launch every missile, dig every torture chamber, loot every home, or rape and torture Ukrainian children. Russians did that. Russian soldiers did that, within a Russian army serving a Russian state shaped by a political culture that long ago made domination of Ukraine part of its imperial inheritance.

Russia has exported this narrative repeatedly across generations. The empire commits atrocities. The intelligentsia mourns elegantly. Europe rediscovers its fascination with the false narrative of Russian depth, tragedy, and suffering. And so accountability is discarded. Reintegration begins. Financial deals emerge. History resumes.

There is a heated discussion in the Ukrainian American community, reflecting broader divisions across American society, about whether rejecting Trump supporters is a matter of political intolerance or moral clarity. It is disappointing that a discussion on this topic is even necessary.

There is a reason the Ukrainian diaspora has endured, organized, and remained coherent across generations and continents. It was never built on the idea that everything is morally equivalent. It held together because people understood that there is right and wrong, that truth matters, and that some lines cannot be crossed without losing something essential. It was forged under pressure, under occupation, under constant attempts to blur the distinction between right and wrong and demand compliance. It is precisely that refusal to blur what sustained the community.

The issue, then, is not whether every Trump supporter should be cast out as a person. People should not be dehumanized, harassed, or treated as beyond redemption. The issue is whether a community grounded in that kind of clarity can treat support for Trump as an ordinary political difference. It cannot. The person may still be approached with dignity. However, the position itself cannot be granted respectability.

Pretending that all political choices are morally equivalent is not principled neutrality or a legitimate expression of party preference. It is an abdication of thoughtful analysis. In a functioning society, political differences are arguments over tax rates, zoning, school funding, trade policy, the proper reach of federal power, or even foreign aid. Those are real debates within a shared system. This is something else.

That is why the usual list of American failures toward Ukraine is irrelevant to the argument. Yes, Ukrainians can, should, and actually did criticize Clinton for the Budapest Memorandum, Bush for “Chicken Kyiv,” Obama for refusing lethal aid in 2014, Biden for delays and restrictions, and every administration that failed to grasp the nature of Russian imperialism. Ukrainian advocacy has always required clear-eyed criticism of both parties. But failure, weakness, and misjudgment are not the same as organizing political loyalty around a figure who promotes Russia’s criminal interests, pressures Ukraine, treats cruelty as entertainment, corruption as leadership, lies as strategy, and contempt for law as strength, then demands that others accept the degradation of democratic norms as ordinary politics.

The same standard applies to the Republican Party. This is not a dispute over a normal party platform. Once a party organizes itself around Trump, excuses him, protects him, and insists that this be treated as standard partisan politics, it assumes responsibility for what it has chosen to become.

The charge of “self-appointed moral superiority,” often leveled by Trump supporters against those who raise these issues, only works if there is no real distinction to be made. There is. Drawing a boundary here is not virtue signaling. It is the mark of mature civic engagement and a clear recognition of what a functioning democracy requires, and, more importantly, what personal integrity demands.

The issue is not that people vote differently. Debate and disagreement are fundamental to a healthy democracy. The issue is the claim that there is no difference between ordinary political disagreement and support for conduct that corrodes democratic life, and the demand that others surrender judgment and treat this as ordinary politics and normal policy choices.

What is most painful is that this confusion has reached parts of a community that once understood the stakes without needing them explained. A community sustained by the refusal to surrender truth has now seen some of its own persuaded that naming right and wrong is the problem. That is not political balance, neutrality, or respect for others’ political choices. It leaves the community less coherent, less honest, and less able to defend the principles that kept it intact in the first place.

The NY Post reports that a lip reader claims that when Trump first greeted King Charles III yesterday, he said he had been talking to Vladimir Putin and warned the King: “I’ve got a feeling … if he did what he said, he will wipe out the population.”

If the lip reader is even close, Donald Trump was planting the premise: Putin wants war, catastrophe is possible, and Trump alone is trying to prevent it. Clearly, his job is to convince as many governments and people as possible that Ukrainian surrender is the only “reasonable” outcome, so of course he started working King Charles III the moment he arrived. This was no doubt the setup for everything that followed behind closed doors. He made Putin’s threat the center of the conversation, treated it as fixed reality, and then dressed his own pressure campaign as concern for human life. Oh please. He continues to try to turn support for Ukraine into the “reckless” option and repackaging surrender as responsibility. Spare me.

Clearly, Charles thought the same, given that he went on to speak in his address to the joint session of Congress about the “unyielding resolve” needed in defense of Ukraine and its people as a pillar of Western obligation. That line, by the way, was met with resounding applause and cheers in the chamber.

Anyone who still pretends not to understand what Donald Trump is doing, or continues to deal with him as though he were a normal American president, is serving one purpose only: obscuring and enabling conduct that is profoundly anti-American, the use of the powers of the American presidency to help Russia sustain its war against Ukraine.

The extension of the Russian oil waiver is the clearest case. Scott Bessent said the waiver would not be renewed. Days later, the administration renewed it anyway. That preserved the central revenue stream underwriting Russia’s war. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already laid out the scale of Russia’s attacks in a single week, more than 2,360 attack drones, more than 1,320 guided aerial bombs, and nearly 60 missiles directed at Ukrainian cities and communities. That level of sustained violence rests on sustained financing. Oil revenue provides it. Keeping that revenue flowing is a choice to help sustain the war.

Reuters reported that the renewed waiver is expected to keep Russian oil exports to India near record highs in April and May. Zelenskyy, for his part, has said that more than 110 shadow-fleet tankers carrying over 12 million tons of Russian oil are at sea, representing roughly $10 billion that can be converted directly into Russian strike capacity. That is the war’s operating budget. Each shipment extends Russia’s capacity to strike. Each dollar shortens the distance between oil sales and bombardment.

The Belarus track follows the same logic. Alexander Lukashenko does not preside over a neutral state. Belarus has been integrated into Russia’s war effort from the outset, as staging ground, corridor, and rear base. What Trump has done is begin easing that regime’s isolation and restoring its economic room for maneuver. In March, after a prisoner deal brokered by Trump envoy John Coale, the United States agreed to drop sanctions on two Belarusian banks and the finance ministry, while earlier relief had already included potash exports. Trump then supplied the political rehabilitation himself, calling Lukashenko “the highly respected President of Belarus.” This restores flexibility to a co-belligerent, normalizes one of Moscow’s key auxiliaries, and creates a layer of distance through which support to the Russian war system can be routed while appearing as something else.

That political signal comes at the same time Ukraine is warning that Belarus may again be drawn more directly into the war. Reuters reported that Zelenskyy said Russia appears to be taking steps to involve Belarus again, with Ukrainian intelligence citing activity near the border, including road construction and artillery positioning. Pressure is eased on a regime embedded in Russia’s war structure just as that regime is positioned for a potentially larger role in the conflict.

The wider alignment is visible as well. Belarus has been deepening ties with North Korea, another regime sustaining Russia’s war with matériel and manpower. In March, Lukashenko traveled to Pyongyang, signed a friendship and cooperation treaty with Kim Jong Un, and expanded coordination across multiple sectors, formal language that avoids the word military while binding together two regimes already contributing directly to Russia’s war effort. Moscow sits at the center, with Minsk and Pyongyang reinforcing the system around it. At the same time, pressure is eased at precisely those points where it once constrained that system’s ability to operate.

There is a broader strategic effect too. Reuters reported this week that the United States warned European countries to expect delays in previously contracted weapons deliveries, while Lithuania and Estonia confirmed they had been notified. Reuters reported that the delays involve various kinds of ammunition, including munitions for both offensive and defensive use, and that some of the affected states share a border with Russia, which is why the cadence of deliveries is treated as sensitive defense information. European officials are also increasingly frustrated because Washington had pushed them to buy American weapons and then warned them, after the fact, that deliveries would slip, prompting some to look more seriously at European-made systems instead. These states form part of the northern and northeastern line that complicates Russian planning and constrains Russian room for maneuver. Weakening that line reduces the number of pressures Moscow has to reckon with at once. It narrows Russia’s military horizon. All of this comes on top of Trump’s demand that NATO allies purchase American weapons for Ukraine, only for Washington to warn those same allies that deliveries they had already contracted and paid for could be delayed, a sequence that combines strategic weakening with open bad faith. It makes concentration easier and undermines their defenses against a potential Russian invasion.

Zelenskyy’s larger point is the one too many politicians and self-proclaimed experts are working hardest to obscure. Easing sanctions does not reflect the real state of the war or the real state of diplomacy. It feeds the Russian leadership’s illusion that time is again on its side. In a war of attrition, that perception is decisive. A regime that believes pressure is softening becomes more willing to prolong the war, absorb losses, and rely on deliberately obscured support from abroad.

This is not a series of disconnected moves. Pressure on Russian revenue is reduced. Belarus is reintroduced as a usable partner and intermediary. Lukashenko is rehabilitated politically. A wider authoritarian network around Moscow is given more room to operate. Russia’s northern strategic horizon is made less threatening by delayed arms deliveries to countries that help constrain it. The language remains procedural, temporary, managerial. The substance is strategic.

Nothing here is difficult to read. The pattern is visible, the sequence legible, and the underlying purpose unmistakable. Conditions are being created in which Russia can sustain its war more easily, and those conditions are being produced with the instruments of American policy. Anyone still pretending otherwise is not misunderstanding events. They are helping to conceal them.

When J. D. Vance boasts that cutting support for Ukraine is among the things he is proudest to have done, he is stating the moral position of this administration and this president. A genocidal war marked by rape, torture, murder, child abduction, and the calculated destruction of civilian life is met with pride in aiding its advance. The leadership of the United States applauds its own depravity and is intent on blurring the line between good and evil until the country itself can no longer tell the difference.

There was a time when American leaders understood, even if imperfectly, that power carried obligations, and therein lies the deeper degradation. But Trump and Vance have spent years rewiring the American public to accept moral inversion as patriotism. They have required their supporters, and the country itself, to treat the spectacle of rape, torture, murder, and child abduction not as a source of horror, but as something to be tolerated, rationalized, and ultimately cheered on so long as the crime serves Russian aims.

They have taken one of the clearest cases of barbarism in the modern world and turned it into a loyalty test, demanding that Americans applaud abandonment and sneer at the attacked. And if you do not support not only this debased policy but them and their policies as a whole, you are dismissed, smeared, and cast as an enemy. That is the deeper degradation, a political culture steeped in disinformation, spewing lies to defend its own depravity while falsely red flagging and smearing those who still object to barbarism.

That is what Vance was celebrating. That is what Trump has made official. And that is the disgrace of the United States under this administration, the kind of shame decent Americans should feel in their very souls.

JD Vance stood in Hungary and described Russia’s war against Ukraine as “haggling” over “a few square kilometers,” and that single sentence is enough to expose the moral and intellectual collapse behind it. It arrives a day after Donald Trump spoke in terms that treated civilizational destruction as policy. He simply reiterated this administration’s way of seeing the world, one in which the elimination of a people can be contemplated, rationalized, and advanced.

Vance’s phrasing is constructed to shrink the scale of what is happening and strip it of moral meaning. A war defined by massacres, deported children, torture chambers, and the systematic dismantling of Ukrainian civic and cultural life is reduced to something petty, something negotiable, something that sounds more like an inconvenience than a crime. “Haggling” suggests irritation, not devastation. “A few square kilometers” suggests triviality, not the destruction of towns, families, and historical continuity. The effect is to make the violence appear smaller than it is and the refusal to submit to it appear excessive.

He delivered that line while supporting Trump’s buddy Viktor Orbán, the Kremlin’s most reliable political asset inside Europe, which places the remark exactly where it belongs, inside a political environment that has spent years translating Russian interests into language designed to sound acceptable to Western audiences. In that setting, the reduction of a genocidal war to a minor territorial dispute is exactly the point.

Vance’s dismissive phrase “a few square kilometers” strips land of the people living on it. It invites the listener to picture empty terrain rather than homes, churches, schools, graves, language, memory, and legacy. Russian occupation is not a technical adjustment of borders. It is a system of coercion and erasure, carried out through violence, deportation, and the destruction of civic life, aimed at eliminating the visible presence of Ukrainians as Ukrainians.

His morally depraved “it takes two to tango” line recasts invasion and erasure as a joint performance and collapses the distinction between aggressor and victim. It asks the audience to forget who crossed the border, who steals children, who destroys cities, and who denies the nationhood of the people under attack, and it replaces those realities with a false symmetry that exists only to make pressure on the victim appear reasonable.

The same administration that speaks casually about wiping out civilizations continues to reduce a war of abduction, torture, and erasure into a dispute to be “resolved” by forcing the victim to concede, with war crimes minimized and made to sound acceptable. For the Trump administration, advancing the destruction of a people is policy.

This is what happens when morally bankrupt people take hold of power. Instead of confronting barbarism, they launder it. Instead of prosecuting crimes, they minimize them, soften them, and package them for public consumption. They traffic in Russian disinformation. That is what Vance was doing in Hungary, in Orbán’s company, on behalf of an administration for which the destruction of a people has become policy. It is sick, it is evil, and every decent person should be working to drive these people from power before they drag the world any deeper into barbarism.

There is something particularly obscene about watching American policy sink deeper into Trumpian squalor while standing in a Ukrainian city that has just been struck by Russia in broad daylight. The contrast is almost too sharp to bear. Here, the wreckage is literal. This is my Lviv neighborhood. These are my neighbors, my shopkeepers, my tailors, my farmers market merchants, people whose faces I know, whose presence forms part of the daily texture of life. This is my church when I’m here. There, in Washington, the wreckage is moral: a president who would have Ukraine retreat from land held at immense human cost, who treats allied support as a cash mechanism, and who looks at a wounded but courageous country and sees not the responsibilities of American leadership, but personal leverage, profit, and spoil.

Russia struck a lived place in the middle of the day, while people were working, shopping, carrying bags home, opening stalls, praying in church, and trying to preserve some thread of ordinary life. Anyone who has spent time in Ukraine knows this scene. It belongs to Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Dnipro, Sumy, and countless other places where civilians live under the constant possibility of sudden violence. What happened in Lviv is what has been happening every day across Ukraine throughout this war.

That is what makes Trump’s posture so filthy. At the very moment when Ukrainians in city after city are absorbing the consequences of Russian terror, he is demanding that Ukraine withdraw from its own territory, territory defended by Ukrainian blood, Ukrainian lives, and Ukrainian endurance, so that Russia can consolidate what it has seized and stand over the wealth beneath it. Hovering over all of this is Trump’s appetite for extraction. He has already degraded American support by shifting it into a framework in which NATO countries pay for U.S. weapons for Ukraine. Europe puts up the money. Washington keeps control. Ukraine is left to live with the consequences.

Even after allies scraped together that money for Ukraine, Reuters reports that Washington now appears prepared to divert hundreds of millions of those funds into U.S. stockpiles instead of sending additional support to the country for which they were raised. The whole arrangement reeks. Trump tells Ukraine to surrender land defended with the lives of its people. He makes NATO pay for the weapons needed to prevent further Russian advance. He keeps control over the pipeline. Then, once the funds are in American hands, he treats them as available for American use. That is the conduct of a swindler.

What makes this even lower is that it is not merely a matter of money or weapons. It is also a matter of spoil. Trump is not pressing Ukraine to retreat from empty ground. He is pressing it to retreat from its own land, land held at terrible human cost, land Russia wants for imperial control and for the value beneath it. He circles that reality with the instincts of a grifter, seeing in Ukraine’s vulnerability not an obligation to defend, but a chance to bargain over assets, territory, and advantage. He looks at a battered country and thinks like a scavenger.

A serious American president would understand the obscenity of this. He would understand that what happened in this Lviv neighborhood belongs to a national condition deliberately imposed by Russia over years of war. He would understand what it means that Ukrainians immediately began the cleanup, that they rebuilt at once, that shopkeepers reopened, that farmers market merchants returned to their stalls, that the faithful went back to church, and that life resumed because it must. That is resilience, yes, but not the kind of resilience comfortable observers like to romanticize. It is the hard civic discipline of people enduring what should never have been made ordinary. Trump does not. He behaves less like an American president than like a Russian asset operating against American interests from within. The result is a policy that stains the office he holds, serves the interests of the Kremlin, and leaves the United States smaller, meaner, and more dishonorable than the American people deserve.

What Trump’s Treasury did on March 12 is morally grotesque, and no one should insult the intelligence of the American public by pretending otherwise. Under the pretense of providing gas-price relief to hard-working families, the U.S. Treasury issued General License 134, authorizing the sale, delivery, and offloading of Russian crude oil and petroleum products already loaded onto vessels, together with the insurance, docking, bunkering, crewing, and related maritime services required to complete those transactions through April 11. Only days earlier, General License 133 authorized a similar pathway for Russian oil cargoes already loaded by March 5 for delivery to India. This does not relieve pressure on American households. It creates practical relief for Russian energy flows, dressed up in technical language so Washington can preserve the fiction that sanctions remain intact.

The squeeze people now feel at the pump followed Trump’s war of choice and his administration’s sanctions on Iranian oil, which removed substantial supply from global markets. That same pain is now being used to create fresh room for Russian oil to move. None of this helps ordinary Americans. The sequence suggests something far more nefarious, namely that Trump appears to have manufactured this crisis in order to come to Russia’s aid.

Russia badly needs the help. Russia’s February oil and fuel export revenues fell to their lowest level since the start of the full-scale war. Russian exports have also been disrupted by Ukrainian drone attacks, ice conditions, and other constraints. In that context, Washington is helping refill the Kremlin’s coffers at the precise moment Russia urgently needs cash.

The public justification for all of this collapses under even basic scrutiny. What these licenses do immediately is allow Russian cargoes to be delivered, offloaded, insured, serviced, and paid for. The benefit to Moscow is immediate. Any meaningful benefit to people here would take months to filter through shipping contracts, refinery adjustments, and global supply chains, if it arrives at all. Critics in Europe and Ukraine have warned that the waiver could channel substantial money toward Russia while doing little in the short term for consumers.

What makes the sanctions relief even more indefensible is that it comes as reports have circulated for days that Russia provided Iran with information that could help Tehran strike American warships, aircraft, and other U.S. assets in the region. While Moscow helps Iran position itself to kill Americans, Washington is creating room for Moscow to recover energy revenue.

The Con-Man-in-Chief always tries to run another con. The administration wants to help Russia without having to admit that it is lifting sanctions on Russia. That is why all of this is being done through licenses and technical wording instead of plain English. The purpose is cover. People are supposed to hear “gas prices” and stop asking questions, while Russian oil keeps moving, Russian money keeps coming in, and Moscow gets exactly the breathing room it needs to fund missiles, occupation forces, repression, and the continued destruction of Ukrainian cities.

People are being asked to buy the con.

Russia keeps benefiting from Trump’s decisions at exactly the moments it needs relief most. At a certain point, coincidence becomes an alibi.

Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine is the central economic drain on the Russian state. It consumes enormous sums of money, equipment, and manpower. The Kremlin’s ability to sustain that war rests heavily on one pillar, oil revenue. In recent months, sanctions and declining energy income have been eroding the financial base that sustains the invasion.

Then Donald Trump launched a war with Iran.

Oil markets reacted immediately. Prices surged. Every barrel on the global market suddenly became more valuable. For a petro-state like Russia, whose government finances depend heavily on oil exports, that kind of spike translates directly into badly needed cash.

After that escalation, the Trump administration issued a sanctions carve-out allowing certain Russian oil cargoes to continue moving, particularly shipments bound for India. It was presented as a technical adjustment. In practice it preserved an export channel for Russian oil at precisely the moment that oil had become dramatically more profitable.

Put the sequence together. Trump’s war with Iran drives oil prices upward. Then a sanctions valve opens allowing Russian oil to keep flowing into global markets. The state whose war machine runs on oil revenue receives both higher prices and continued access to buyers.

If one were designing a mechanism to relieve pressure on Russia’s war economy, the result would look remarkably similar.

Now add the intelligence dimension. Reports have emerged that Russia has been providing Iran with intelligence that could assist in targeting American forces in the region. That creates a talking point Moscow would very much like to promote: the United States gives intelligence to Ukraine, Russia gives intelligence to Iran, therefore perhaps both sides should stop.

In reality, the Russian contribution may be operationally useful and dangerous in limited ways, especially if it helps Iran target U.S. assets after recent degradation of its own tracking capacity. Even so, it still appears to function largely as a bargaining chip, a card to be waved around in negotiations. American intelligence support to Ukraine materially affects the battlefield in sustained and consequential ways. The public reporting on Russian intelligence to Iran does not show anything remotely comparable in operational effect.

In that same week, the United States joined Russia, China, and Niger in opposing an IAEA resolution condemning attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as a threat to nuclear safety. That was not some procedural quibble. It was the United States siding with Russia against a measure aimed at condemning the consequences of Russia’s own war.

In that same period, the United States was also pounding Iran with enough force to raise a new question for Ukraine and its allies: if NATO wanted to secure more air-defense support for Ukraine, are there enough Patriots left to go around? As Washington burns through scarce interceptors in the Middle East, the flow of Patriots to Ukraine begins to tighten, almost as if the point were to cut it off altogether. That, too, is a gift to Moscow.

What I have just described unfolded in the span of a single week. But that is exactly the point. None of it was isolated. It was simply one week of entries in a long and growing record of Trump bending over backward for Russia, relieving pressure on the Kremlin when it should be tightened, and repeatedly aligning American power with Moscow’s interests.

The pattern has become so glaring that even foreign leaders have begun saying openly what many others have long whispered. The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, put it bluntly: “The supreme leader of the world’s greatest superpower is, objectively, a Soviet or Russian asset. He functions as an asset.”

And beneath all of this is the ugliest part of all. Trump is not simply helping Russia. He is trying to Russianize the United States morally. Russia is an amoral state. It lies as a matter of habit, kills as a matter of policy, and treats human suffering as irrelevant beside power. Trump’s actions keep dragging America toward that same condition, where principle means nothing, loyalty belongs to force, and every crime can be explained away if it serves the ruler.

Russia desperately needs money. It desperately needs Ukraine cut off from American intelligence. And as it tries to wipe Ukraine off the map, it desperately needs Ukraine denied the defensive weapons it needs to survive. Finally, it desperately needs the world to see the United States no longer firmly against it. Under Trump, it sees an America standing shoulder to shoulder with it. Moscow could hardly have scripted it better.

And so Ukraine did what it always does when allies typically fall through. It adapted and learned under fire. It rewrote modern warfare in real time while defending power plants, hospitals, and residential neighborhoods from Iranian drone strikes used by Russia as a weapon of attrition. Its operators became the most experienced counter-Shahed defenders in the world because Ukraine had no other choice if it wanted to keep the lights on, the hospitals functioning, and its civilians alive under a sustained campaign of Iranian drone terror carried out by Russia. And in doing so, Ukraine not only protected its own citizenry, but also the security of Western democracies whose stability depends on containing Russian expansionism. Ukraine is the only one doing the job NATO was supposed to do: absorbing and degrading the military pressure of an expansionist Russian state at immense human cost.

The scenario is obscene. Iran manufactures the drones. Then gives Russia the technology to produce them. Now Russia deploys those Iran developed drones to terrorize Ukrainian cities. Ukraine develops unmatched counter-Shahed expertise while under bombardment, in real time, over its own homes, hospitals, and energy infrastructure. Then, while Ukraine is still under sustained attack by those same systems, instead of saturating Ukraine’s defenses until the threat is decisively reduced, the response by the states that Ukraine alone is defending with its blood is to treat Ukrainian expertise as a deployable asset to shield wealthy petrostates whose survival is not in question, only their infrastructure, markets, and financial stability.

A conflict in an oil region is never only about security. It is about control over energy infrastructure, leverage over partners, and the political uses of volatility. It is also about who gets protected first, whose sovereignty is treated as sacrosanct, and whose lives are treated as strategic slack. Ukraine, after years of being told to wait, calibrate, and endure, is now being asked to export its hard-earned survival competence into a war environment being actively generated by a president with deep personal entanglements and profit interests in the same petrostate ecosystem that is now being prioritized.

And it gets worse, because this theater materially favors Russia. Any sustained instability that raises oil prices refills Russia’s coffers. Russia is a petrostate waging a long war of attrition against Ukraine. More oil revenue means more endurance, more capacity to fund production, and more resilience against sanctions pressure. The same crisis environment that draws Western attention and Ukrainian expertise away from Ukraine also strengthens the state that is using Iranian drones to attack Ukrainian cities.

Against this backdrop, rather than saturating Ukraine as the frontline with the critically needed air defense, interceptors, and systemic support it has been requesting for years, Western leadership is commandeering the very expertise forged under Ukrainian bombardment to protect Gulf partners while Ukrainian cities remain under Iranian drone threat. That decision sends a chilling signal that Ukrainian lives are considered expendable in the service of Western Mammon, that a nation bleeding under sustained aerial terror can be treated not as a priority to be secured, but as a reservoir of hard-earned battlefield competence to be redirected wherever money, energy markets, and strategic convenience demand faster action. It turns Ukrainian survival skills into a service for richer states while Ukrainians still bury their dead from the same drones.

Four years ago, the world crossed a threshold from which there is no return. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a historical cataclysm was set in motion, one in which the future course of human society and the moral architecture governing it would be tested and, in significant measure, determined. At the time, much of the Western strategic community assumed that Kyiv would fall within days and that Ukrainian statehood would buckle under the combined weight of shock, mass, and terror. The underlying assumption was that a smaller democratic nation could not withstand a revanchist imperial power willing to wage war without restraint. What was framed as sober realism was, in fact, a profound misreading of both the nature of the war and the stakes embedded within it.

That misreading was shattered almost immediately when President Zelensky refused evacuation and declared, “I don’t need a ride. I need ammunition.” It clarified, in a single sentence, that Ukraine understood the war as existential while much of the West was still interpreting it as a crisis to be managed. That managerial instinct, the reflex to launder an existential assault into a “manageable” problem, helped delay the clarity the moment demanded.

In the years leading up to February 24, the West repeatedly treated Russia as a hard but ultimately containable problem, a state that could be engaged, incentivized, and gradually moderated through trade, diplomacy, and institutional contact. That posture required a kind of willed amnesia. It depended on treating Russian brutality in Georgia, in Chechnya, and in Syria as episodic excess rather than doctrine. Successive acts of Russian brutality were ignored. The Russian empire was granted the benefit of the doubt it had never deserved.

Then Russia showed its face in the most brutal and unmistakable form.

Russia’s full-scale invasion was not merely an escalation of a regional conflict. It marked the open reassertion of genocide as an instrument of statecraft in the twenty-first century. A nuclear-armed state, in full view of the modern world, attempted to annihilate cities, erase a national identity, and systematically weaponize terror against civilians. Even then, a final wake-up in the West was delayed by willful reluctance. The invasion and the response to it were framed in procedural and technocratic terms, mythologizing escalation dynamics, normalizing inadequate sanctions regimes, and elevating illusory diplomatic pathways. Those frameworks obscured the deeper rupture already underway.

And that rupture was civilizational.

For three decades after the Cold War, much of the West operated within a psychological and institutional architecture built on assumptions of linear progress, economic integration, and the gradual moderation of revisionist actors through global systems. Large-scale territorial conquest in Europe was widely considered an anachronism. The illusion of a stable post-Cold War order collapsed in real time, exposing the fragility of a system that had mistaken a temporary equilibrium for permanent transformation.

Ukraine became the geographic and symbolic fault line where two historical paradigms collided. On one side stood a society grounded in sovereignty, civic resilience, historical memory, and democratic continuity. On the other stood an imperial regime fueled by falsified history, coercive hierarchy, and the modern instrumentalization of violence as political language. The invasion forced the world to confront a question long deferred since the dissolution of the Soviet Union: whether imperial conquest would again be normalized as an acceptable instrument of international politics.

That question has been answered day after day on Ukrainian soil.

Ukraine’s refusal to collapse in the opening weeks altered the trajectory of the war and, with it, the trajectory of the democratic world. Instead of rapid decapitation and political capitulation, the world witnessed a nation reorganizing under existential assault while sustaining governance, civil society, and cultural continuity under bombardment. Ukraine’s resistance became a strategic shield for the broader democratic order. Every defensive line held outside Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa was simultaneously a defensive line for the principles that underpin the modern democratic world. Every liberated village challenged the doctrine of inevitability on which authoritarian systems depend. Every act of Ukrainian resilience disrupted the narrative that liberal societies are too divided, too decadent, or too hesitant to withstand sustained aggression.

Ukraine absorbed the first and most violent shock of a confrontation that many larger powers had long hoped could be managed rather than confronted. It forced the democratic world to relearn that continuity of order is not preserved by declarations, economic ties, or diplomatic habits alone. Democracy is preserved when societies actively defend it.

The old interpretive frame, the habits of minimization and procedural delay, and the instinct to bargain with imperial appetite all failed. While the current U.S. administration remains strategically incoherent and morally compromised, the broader Western response continues to oscillate between recognition and hesitation.

Europe has been forced to adjust, but adjustment is not the same as strategic resolution. Some states have moved with urgency, while others have hesitated, hedged, or searched for routes back to a pre-war normal that no longer exists. The result is a continent that is more alert than it was in 2021, yet still politically uneven, operationally constrained, and vulnerable to fatigue.

Europe’s political economy is being reshaped because the war has made security questions inescapable. Energy policy is shifting toward autonomy, but unevenly and at significant cost. Military doctrine is moving toward territorial defense and deterrence, yet procurement timelines, industrial capacity, and political cohesion remain constrained. Intelligence services now openly address hybrid warfare, information manipulation, and long-term infiltration as central features of state conflict rather than peripheral concerns.

Hybrid warfare operates through political pressure, narrative distortion, economic leverage, and the cultivation of political assets within democratic systems. Russian strategy has consistently sought to exploit internal divisions across the democratic world, including within the United States and Europe. Political figures whose rhetoric normalizes Russian narratives or undermines support for Ukraine function as force multipliers for that strategy. In this context, the conduct and positioning of actors such as Donald Trump, alongside European figures like Viktor Orbán and Robert Fico, cannot be understood in isolation from the broader information and political battlespace shaped by Russia’s long-term hybrid push.

This does not indicate strategic coherence on Russia’s part so much as desperation expressed through every available vector, military, informational, economic, and political. It also underscores that the conflict is not confined to front lines in Ukraine, but extends into the institutional, electoral, and informational structures of democratic societies themselves.

Public discourse has shifted, but recognition does not equal endurance. Europe and the broader West are still testing whether they can sustain sacrifice, discipline, and political cohesion over the long horizon that an imperial war imposes.

All of this points to the same conclusion. Russia’s full-scale invasion irrevocably changed the world by making plain that the era of imperial war had never really gone away, and that democratic societies would be judged by whether they could summon even a fraction of Ukraine’s resilience, and meet terror with Ukrainian clarity. Ukraine’s resistance ensured that the world Russia sought to destroy did not collapse with it. In the most concrete strategic and historical sense, Ukraine did not merely defend itself. It preserved the continuity of the democratic order that imperial violence sought to overturn, and in doing so, it helped save the world that invasion was meant to unmake. Now it is up to the West to recognize the heroism of the people of Ukraine not to squander what Ukraine has saved.

He offered Europe a civilizational narrative in which Western imperial expansion is treated as the backbone of order, while anti-colonial movements are framed as dangerous and destructive. That framing was the true organizing logic of the address, the lens through which the past, the alliance, and the present geopolitical moment were implicitly reinterpreted.

Though it occupied only a single sentence in Rubio’s speech, the anti-anti-colonialism was its most revealing element. By rhetorically collapsing anti-colonial uprisings into the same moral space as genocidal totalitarian communism, he reordered history itself. Liberation struggles were recast as destabilizing forces, while imperial structures were implicitly treated as civilizational stabilizers. Resistance to imperialism becomes suspect. Unrestrained power is recast as virtuous. Sovereignty, in turn, is quietly stripped of its self-evidence.

Ukraine is a present-tense anti-imperial war on European soil, a state resisting conquest, occupation, and erasure. Any serious security address in Munich should have treated that reality as the conceptual center of the speech. Rubio did not. Ukraine was displaced from the intellectual core and replaced by a lecture on Western identity, decline, and civilizational confidence. At a conference about war in Europe, sidelining Ukraine reveals the true American intent.

Once anti-colonial thinking is framed as historically destructive, Ukraine’s resistance becomes structurally inconvenient to the narrative being advanced. It cannot function as the moral axis without contradicting the civilizational story underpinning the speech. The result is not an explicit abandonment. It is a conceptual rejection. The war is acknowledged, but it is no longer treated as the organizing fact of Western strategic discourse that it needs to be.

The speech also quietly reinterpreted the transatlantic alliance. It was framed less as a security compact grounded in shared threat perception and more as a civilizational project rooted in a particular reading of Western history. That framing reinforces asymmetry. The United States defines the intellectual meaning and direction of the West, and Europe is expected to align with Washington’s whims and, if necessary, turn away from its own democratic values to do so. Disagreement becomes deviation rather than legitimate strategic divergence.

Munich demanded clarity about war, sovereignty, and imperial aggression. Instead, it got a polished history lesson that flatters empire, scolds liberation, and treats Ukraine like an inconvenient prop, all delivered in the soothing tone that passes for “reassurance” among people who confuse not publicly behaving like a lunatic with normalcy. And to remove any remaining doubt, Rubio made the American pro-imperial position explicit and blew off the Munich session on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Reuters has been reporting Poland’s shift into a wartime procurement posture, including major armor purchases and accelerated air defense upgrades, and that is the only sane response to Moscow. Warsaw is buying tanks, expanding brigades, rebuilding stockpiles, and reorganizing for a long confrontation because it does not confuse Russia with a normal state. Western commentary has already begun to spin this into a flattering parable about NATO’s “reinvigoration,” as if seriousness simply blooms in Brussels once the right words are spoken.

That storyline skips the hypocrisy at the center of it. Western Europe has grown accustomed to treating security as an entitlement and comfort as a default setting, as if somebody else will always absorb the blows so the deserving can stay warm, well fed, and pleasantly distracted. Now that America has abandoned its former role as the anchor of the free world, too much of Europe has slid into expecting Ukraine to cover the gap. The front line has become background scenery for cocktail parties.

Poland can surge its defenses because Ukraine is absorbing Russia’s assault in real time. Ukrainians in freezing, darkened cities are tying down Russian formations, burning through missiles, and holding the line against a campaign that targets apartment blocks and power stations rather than military barracks. Ukrainian civilians are dying so Europe’s civilians can remain safe, warm, and well fed, and so NATO’s most vaunted units can remain protected, on standby rather than in combat.

Russia’s army is stuck in Ukraine instead of probing alliance seams. Its cruise missiles are expended on Ukrainian grids rather than Polish substations. Its manpower is being consumed east of the Dnipro instead of positioned for coercion elsewhere. The strategic space that allows Poland to prepare is being purchased, day after day, with Ukrainian lives.

What deserves scrutiny is the Western habit of praising its own rearmament while treating Ukrainian sacrifice as an entitlement. It turns a nation fighting for its existence into a service provider and converts Europe’s delayed seriousness into a virtue rather than a reckoning.

Ukraine is performing the alliance’s core mission under fire, without alliance guarantees, while the rest of Europe rebuilds at leisure. It is doing so with courage and discipline. In the process, Ukraine has stepped into the role the United States discarded.

That reality imposes obligations, not applause.

Europe cannot keep congratulating itself for waking up while allowing a besieged country to pay for the alarm clock. Rearmament programs and defense white papers are necessary, yet they become morally thin when they proceed on a timetable cushioned by Ukrainian blood. Europe’s strategic duty is immediate and measurable.

First, Ukrainian defense must be treated as European defense in operational terms, and Europe’s industrial ramp-up must be designed around that fact rather than domestic reassurance. Integrated air and missile defense along NATO’s eastern flank should be paired with sustained deliveries to Ukrainian cities. Intelligence sharing, satellite coverage, electronic warfare support, logistics corridors, and maintenance hubs in Central Europe should become routine. At the same time, the continent must abandon incrementalism and move at wartime tempo. Ammunition, interceptors, armored vehicles, drones, spare parts, and training pipelines have to shift from bureaucratic pacing to industrial mobilization through long-term contracts, pooled procurement, and state-backed financing.

Europe cannot warehouse this surge. Ukraine must be fully supplied. Europe is already building Ukrainian-designed drone factories in Western Europe, drawing directly on battlefield innovation. That output should not become a new layer of continental comfort while Ukraine remains under supplied. The same applies to air defense. If Western Europe cannot protect itself, and it cannot, then it has an obligation to fully supply the country that is protecting it, including transferring half the Patriot missile stocks sitting in Western European arsenals. Factories expand when governments stop hedging. Convoys move when governments stop rationing.

Second, sanctions and economic warfare must stop functioning as theater. Energy loopholes, shadow fleets, technology leakage, and financial intermediaries have prolonged Moscow’s ability to wage war. Enforcement requires political will. Frozen Russian assets should be marshaled for Ukrainian defense and reconstruction. Aggression must generate permanent material loss.

Third, for God’s sake, tell the truth. The European public deserves candor rather than comforting myths, and Europe’s political class must stop treating Russian subversion as a side issue. Leaders should stop marketing delayed seriousness as renaissance and start explaining how complacency flourished for decades. Higher defense spending, stockpile rebuilding, grid hardening, civil defense systems, cyber resilience, territorial forces, and shelter networks are not relics of Cold War paranoia. And they are certainly not warmongering. They are basic governance for states that intend to survive.

But resilience is not only steel and concrete. It is democratic self-defense. Moscow is running a parallel campaign to fracture European societies through Russia-fed far-right assets and agents who launder Kremlin narratives into domestic language, weaponize grievance, and corrode trust from within. Europe needs enforcement against illicit financing, influence operations, and coordinated disinformation, along with the moral clarity to name assets for what they are like Orban and Fico.

Finally, Europe must include Ukraine’s future inside its own. Accelerated accession pathways, long-term security guarantees, reconstruction compacts, and defense-industrial integration would replace improvisation with permanence. Ukraine has already demonstrated that it belongs inside Europe’s security architecture by carrying its weight under fire. Europe should codify that reality in policy, i.e. integration and membership in European structures and alliances.

Europe has to stop behaving like a protected audience and start behaving like a continent at war. That means speed, mass, and permanence, not slogans or panels. Ukraine has long been holding the line that Europe pretended did not exist. Courageous Ukraine will not give up, but Europe cannot keep asking it to carry Europe’s security alone. Europe must live up to its moral obligation and brace Ukraine now, with hands and metal and money, or it will discover too late that the price of delay is far higher than the price of action.
