TGIF. Market is a touch nervous as 10yr yield is below panic level now. Even though that gives Trump some space to escalate, I don’t think that will happen. It is starting to be increasingly “costly” to contain further rise in yield, plus midterm is near, plus US ran out of bullets. So yes, “economic” pressure is the new norm. That means, focus now move to Iran-Oman SOH resolution. And that concludes the chapter.

6 months into the US-Iran war. Good to take a step back and look at the impact. We then project where we land in the next 6 months.

To begin, this conflict brought about

Volatility; Not all volatility are made the same. High frequency flip flops (sometimes 3-4 times a day) were nightmares for majors and trading houses taking large positions into pricing. The nature of the market doesn’t allow sufficient liquidity for the titanic to steer away when the iceberg appears.
Logistic anxiety; The number of vessels passing through the straits are less than 10% of usual volume on most days. Many consumers had to source for alternate supplies to make up for loss. Others start to stockpile (if possible). Some make plans for longer transit.
Higher Inflation expectation; While we all think that prices are going to explode higher, many forget that supply is only one part of the equation. Demand is the other variable. The world came out of covid with a hunger for goods and many consume as though they had never eaten for life. In short, a large portion of this consumption on goods and services are “wasteful”, “extra” and “inefficient”. The conflict allows for the world to scale back the extras and work on efficiency through substitution and innovation. That is why we don’t see the kind of hyperinflation that public is talking about. Well, at least not yet.
Inventory drawdown; while the world can cut back on demand, innovate and substitute, the reality is that we still draw upon the buffer that was built up for decades. This means the tailend risk impact has just grew exponentially. Any further supply shock impact will not be as merciful as this one.

So where are we heading towards?
