Sneezing and sore muscles come with decluttering, but apparently, so do the feelings.

Carrying stuff up and down stairs, bagging things up and moving them around, deciding what to keep or toss… It’s forced me to digest the past in a way I haven’t had the time or space to do before.

As a writer, I spend a lot of time researching the past and reading about other people’s lives. But decluttering has forced me to dig into my own.

Wow. So much can happen in one little life!

I’ve unearthed a random assortment of old photos, journals, and little pieces of former lives. Some make me laugh. Some make me shudder. Some make me homesick for thigns that no longer exist.

This photo did the latter.

That’s my mom and dad waving goodbye after one of my last visits to the retirement home my father designed and built on Lummi Island, Washington.

I had always hoped the house my dad built would stay in our family. It did not.

When that house sold, an entire chapter of my life went with it.

Here’s that photo and a little poem I wrote about it:

Lummi Island Home

Is it really just a place?
This house built by Dad’s hands
Where memories toss and gather
Like sea foam at the beach:

Days planned around ferry runs
High and low tide
Berries picked with nails on sticks
Arms scratched and ankles stung by nettles

Walks through the forest
And along the water’s edge
Playing “Swamp Thing” and stuffing our pockets
With beach rocks and seashells

Dishes of agates gleam in long light
Little altars to the sea
A testament to Mom’s sharp eyes
Nephews grow from summer to summer

Late afternoon on the deck
Gin and tonics, crackers and cheese
Pine siskins and hummingbirds chatter
Will chickadees ever eat from my hand?

Mom’s cactus flowers bloom in pots
Dad’s vegetable garden below
We scan for orcas, eagles, and ship silhouettes
But the green flash eludes us yet again

Another orange sherbet sun
Melts into Georgia Strait
As the Liberty Ship bell’s shadow
Slides around the corner
Taking the day’s heat with it

Deer glide through the yard
As birds roost
Ship lights and stars twinkle
Nighttime brings a new quiet
And conversation shifts

Time to wrap an afghan around my shoulders and
Stoke the chiminea
Time to laugh off pre-dinner tensions
Beneath Cassiopeia, the Big Dipper and if we’re lucky: the Northern Lights

A few months ago, graphic designer Chris McGorey asked if he could use my photo from Scarborough Renaissance Festival for the cover of Scott Fishkind’s album, “The Potter, The Sage, and Other Tales.”

Built-in Party

Lar and I got married at Scarborough, so we go back each year as a built-in anniversary party and I always take a ton of pics.

What’s funny about this photo is that I have VERY particular memories surrounding it.

In fact, I learned two big lessons that day:

Lesson #1: Don’t get sunscreen in your eyes!

It was hot. I was sweating. Yada, yada, yada, springtime in Texas…

Sunscreen ran into my eyes. Even after splashing water on my face, my eyes were stinging, red, and swollen.

I looked like Gollum. (Gollum with purple fairy wings, but still rather creepy.)

While dealing with that, I accidentally smeared sunscreen on my camera lens—which gave my photos a dreamy, gauzy glow.

Which brings me to…

Lesson #2: Sunscreen smears can be useful

Ever since then, I’m compulsive about wiping off my camera lens. (But I’ve also been known to deliberately smear a little sunscreen on the lens when I want that dreamy effect.)

So it cracks me up that one of those accidentally sunscreen-smeared photos is now album art! 😂

Anyway, a Ren Fair pic definitely fits the vibe of Fishkind’s folk tunes! I can easily imagine hearing his songs drifting through the breeze there.

What a delightful surprise to find in the mailbox!

Turns out, roaming North Texas dressed as Egypt’s last pharaoh makes for a memorable day.

So here’s a little photo essay for y’all!

Last week, I debuted my brand-new presentation, Egyptomania! Egypt’s Enduring Influence, at Watauga Public Library. Just for fun, I decided to show up dressed as Cleopatra.

However, I certainly hadn’t planned on visiting my husband’s doctor in full costume, as well!

But by the time we realized Larry had booked an appointment for the same afternoon as my talk, changing it seemed like too much trouble.

Truth be told, I was a little annoyed at first. For me, the biggest complication was the Cleopatra eye makeup. It’s not something I can simply slap on; it takes a steady hand and a good half hour.

But then I realized that his doctor’s office was right by King Tut Egyptian Restaurant, which gave me an idea. <insert evil laugh>

Larry loves Middle Eastern food as much as I do, so it took minimal arm-twisting to convince him that we should grab lunch there beforehand.

Somehow, once the promise of King Tut’s falafel entered the picture, my attitude improved considerably.

Funny how that works…

Cleopatra Arrives for Lunch

We pulled up to King Tut Egyptian Restaurant just as they were opening.

I was delighted when the owner agreed to pose for a photo together. He even suggested that we cross our arms over our chests in an ancient Egyptian manner.

Then, much to my surprise, he gave me a pretty ankh necklace!

I put it on immediately, of course. What a lovely souvenir—and such a kind gesture.

We didn’t get to chat with him for long because he is also one of the cooks, and the restaurant quickly filled up.

Instead of ordering a lunch special, we chose a mezze plate so we could sample a little of everything. King Tut’s falafel is always a treat. I really love the sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Their baba ganoush is delicious, too, with a spicy kick that seems a little Texan to me.

King Tut is a family-owned eatery that’s been part of Fort Worth since 1992. As you can see, it’s filled with interesting Egyptian statues and wall hangings.

Our server was the owner’s daughter, Hoda. Larry has been to Egypt many times, and I’ve been twice, so after our meal, the three of us traded stories about the country. She also told us how the recent World Cup had raised Egypt’s visibility while bringing North Texas’ Egyptian community together.

Then, having eaten far too many delicious things, Cleopatra and her entourage headed to the doctor’s office.

Cleopatra Goes to the Doctor

Walking around town in a Cleopatra costume produced an interesting range of reactions.

Some strangers smiled and called out, “I love your outfit!” Others gave me sneaky sideways glances.

My favorite reaction came from an elderly man in a fedora who removed his hat as I passed and said, “I bow to you, my queen!”

The receptionist at the doctor’s office, on the other hand, barely reacted. Her stony expression seemed to say, Whatever. Cleopatra comes here all the time.

Larry’s doctor, however, got a kick out of the outfit and took a moment to ask about it.

After the appointment, we headed toward Watauga. We still had an hour to kill, so we stopped at Lone Star Antiques, one of our favorite antique malls. I kept my eyes open for Egyptian Revival furniture and other treasures, but didn’t find much this time aside from a pyramid-shaped paperweight.

Finally, we made it to Watauga Public Library.

Pyramids, Hummus & Medicare?

The library had a busy evening planned. In addition to my Egyptomania presentation, it was hosting mahjong and a Medicare talk.

Watauga’s Adult Services Librarian, Dana Harper (ever the hostess with the mostest!) had a yummy hummus tray waiting for the audience, and I brought iced karkade. This bright red hibiscus tea is enjoyed hot or cold in Egypt. Not only is karkade tangy and tasty, but studies suggest it may also help lower blood pressure.

Dana and I arranged everything, checked the slides, set up my books, and waited.

Before long, a woman entered and settled in the back row.

Picture the scene: I’m standing there dressed as Cleopatra. Behind me, the screen displays the Great Pyramid at sunset along with the title:

EGYPTOMANIA! EGYPT’S ENDURING INFLUENCE

To break the ice, I asked how she’d heard about the presentation.

“On the library website,” she replied. “I’m here to learn.”

That was when I noticed her yellow notepad and pen.

Wow! I thought. This gal is gonna take notes!

“Have you ever been to Egypt?” I asked.

“Egypt?” she sputtered. “Why? Isn’t this the Medicare talk?”

What?!

The imp in me wishes I’d said yes and waited for her to figure it out. Instead, I helped her find the back room, where the Medicare presentation was already underway.

And then I began to worry.

What if no one showed up? What if Cleopatra was left alone with an untouched tray of hummus and an hour’s worth of slides?

But then people began arriving.

And arriving.

And arriving.

Before long, every seat was taken. A few people even stood at the back!

Egyptomania Comes to Life

It was great to see so many familiar faces in the audience, including fellow author Harry Hall (who is also my speaking mentor), as well as Steve, Teena, Veronica, Russell, Penney, Karen, Mike—and many others.

The original version of the presentation contained way more slides than I could possibly fit into an hour. I reluctantly trimmed it down SO MUCH, but Egyptomania is a dangerously fascinating topic. Once you begin exploring the many ways ancient Egypt has influenced architecture, fashion, movies, advertising, music, makeup, and popular culture, it’s impossible to stop.

And, of course, Egyptomania found its way into cemeteries…

Egyptomania in My Books

One of the stories I shared that evening involved my favorite cemetery obelisk in Fort Worth: the monument of William “Gooseneck” McDonald, Texas’ first Black millionaire. He allegedly used his obelisk to taunt the KKK, and I recount the details in my book 6 Feet Under Texas.

Egypt also plays a starring role in my book Around the World in 80 Graves. The last three chapters of that book are devoted to my adventures there, such as buying fresh bread in an ancient necropolis, visiting tombs, cruising the Nile, watching a whirling dervish, touring “garbage city,” and other wonders.

I’ve gotta say, it was a great audience, too, so lively and engaged! Before I knew it, the talk was over.

My only regret: We took a bunch of photos after—but somehow forgot to get one with Dana! Dang!

I’ve been speaking at Dana’s library since 2017, and she always makes these events so welcoming and fun. We’ll simply have to make up for it when I come back on October 8th to give my talk about my newest book.

This presentation also marked the beginning of my fall speaking season! I’ll be appearing at libraries and other venues across North Texas over the next few months, with talks about cemeteries, local history, symbolism, travel, and the paranormal.

Egyptomania Music Video

Right after the presentation, Steve Rodgers of Buttermilk Junction sent a link to the wonderfully Egyptomaniacal (is that even a word?) video for “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers:

The band appears as a group of 1920s explorers amid pyramids, camels, desert scenes, and plenty of Egyptian Revival imagery. In other words, it fits the theme perfectly.

I’ll share more Egyptomania tidbits from my research in future posts, so stay tuned.

And even though the presentation is over, it feels like Egyptomania isn’t finished with me yet…

If nothing else, I’ve certainly got this year’s Halloween costume sorted!

We had a full house, and it was a blast! It was especially fun seeing so many newsletter readers in person (Jonelle, Harry, Steve, Teena, Karen, Mike, among others) as well as making some new friends along the way.

Even though this presentation was created by special request for Watauga Public Library, I have a feeling Egyptomania isn’t quite finished with me yet… 🏺✨

Hey there!

How’s your summer going? It’s hot as Hades here in North Texas, so I’m coping the only way I know how: reading, researching, swimming... and swigging iced tea.

Since my last newsletter, I’ve been prepping hard for all my upcoming talks and classes.

But as you can see from the photo above, I’m also tackling a long-overdue decluttering project.

Can you believe that at least three of those bags are packed with coats, scarves, and other winter clothes? It’s all stuff I wore when I lived up north.

Somehow, when the heat index is pushing 119°F, it’s easy to let winter clothes go…

As for the talks, the first is a brand-new presentation on Egyptomania. What a FUN topic. I’m having a blast putting it together.

Every day my research uncovers another surprising connection between ancient Egypt and our modern world—from obelisks and freemasons, to pencils, fashion, movies, America’s dollar bill, and even the Statue of Liberty.

⏳ Angels & Cherubs & Virtues—Oh, My!

Not every winged figure in a cemetery is an angel.

Some are cherubs. Others represent virtues such as Hope, Faith, or Charity. Learning the difference can completely change how you interpret a monument, along with the story it’s trying to tell.

Howdy friends!

The Mediterranean cruise has come and gone, but Larry and I are still traveling.

One of the highlights was spending a wonderful day in Lisbon with my talented taphophile pal Gisela Monteiro.

It’s always a joy to reconnect with Gisela, and I came away with plenty of new ideas, discoveries, and rabbit holes to explore. I’ll share more about our fun day together in a future post.

The cruise carried us from one ancient city to the next. Every port seemed to reveal another layer of fascinating cemetery history.

Along the way, I explored the historic English Cemetery in Málaga (which has surprisingly macabre origins!), visited a cavernous crypt beneath Cádiz that sits below sea level, and wandered through Olbia, Sardinia, where I learned about the mysterious Janas—fairy-like beings associated with ancient tombs and burial places.

Tomb fairies?!? Yeah, I definitely need to learn more about those!

🏺 Cemetery Symbolism: Urns

My latest article for American Cemetery & Cremation explores one of the most enduring funerary symbols of all: the urn.

From ancient Greece to Victorian cemeteries, urns have long symbolized remembrance, mourning, memory, and the soul’s journey. It’s one of those cemetery symbols that most people recognize, but few realize how much history is packed into its shape.

Sadly, European internet regulations prevent me from viewing the finished article while I’m abroad, so I’ll see it for the first time once we get home.

(However, my editor, Tom, described the piece as “sensational,” which certainly made my day!)

Italy Tour Reflections

It always takes a while to digest everything we see, do, and learn during these 10-day Italian cemetery workshops. (And I’ll certainly be sharing more in the weeks to come.)

The photo above shows our intrepid cemetery tour crew standing in front of Monteverde’s famous Resurrection Angel in Genoa’s magnificent Staglieno Cemetery, a place that has inspired visitors for generations, including Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain. Perhaps it’s fitting that Larry and I returned to Genoa for a few extra days after the tour ended.

Tomorrow we board a cruise ship, and one of our stops will be Lisbon, where we’ll once again meet up with our talented taphophile friend Gisela Monteiro. Cemetery friendships really do take you around the world!

While the Monumental Cemeteries of Italy tour may have ended, my Travel & Tombstones adventures most certainly have not!

I’m talking about the Talking Tombstone Tour in Weatherford, Texas which is one of those events that perfectly blends history, storytelling, and small-town charm.

This annual event is sponsored by the Parker County Historical Society and takes place in Old City Greenwood Cemetery (300 East Front St, Weatherford, TX) a charming historic burial ground that I’ve featured in several books (including my newest Buried America Dallas—Fort Worth)

For anyone who enjoys Victorian Era cemetery symbolism, this place is a real gem. (I often use photos from Old City Greenwood Cemetery in my American Cemetery magazine articles, in fact!)

On top of that, our fellow taphophile pals Tammy and Kevin joined us, which made it even more fun to wander from story to story. I’m really kicking myself for not getting a photo of the four of us—but there was a lot going on to distract me, as you can see:

🪦 Weatherford’s Talking Tombstone Tour

The premise of the Talking Tombstone Tour is simple:

Costumed interpreters “bring the dead to life” by portraying real people buried in the cemetery, telling their stories in first person.

And let me tell you… these folks commit.

🎭 Meet the cemetery “residents”

Each stop along the path introduced us to someone new—some humorous, some poignant, all memorable.

Here are the residents from Weatherford’s past who we met today:

Annie & Oscar Barthold
Part of Weatherford’s early commercial backbone, the Bartholds helped anchor the town’s development through business and civic involvement.

Their home became a gathering place for community life, reflecting their lasting local influence. That’s Annie above, as portrayed by Cheryl Measures.

And in the photo above, you’ll see Oscar Barthold, as portrayed by Dave Vanvlack.

(And guess what? The actors portraying the Bartholds are married in real life.)

Sarah Ida Rider Cotten (1867–1922)
A civic leader and businesswoman, Sarah helped carry forward her family’s furniture enterprise while dedicating much of her life to community service.

As a DAR member and active clubwoman, she played a key role in shaping Weatherford’s cultural and charitable life. (Portrayed by Cheri Brinkman.)

Ira “Bud” Slover (1840–1909)
A true frontier figure, Bud Slover experienced the dangers of early North Texas firsthand—fighting in frontier conflicts and later serving in the Confederate cavalry.

After the war, he rebuilt his life as a respected stockman, embodying the resilience and grit of the era. (Portrayed by Ed Owens)

Jacob Shenck Davis (1843–1904)
A Union veteran who settled in Confederate Texas, Davis built a life defined by craftsmanship and character.

A cabinet maker by trade, he earned respect in Weatherford through hard work and quiet perseverance. (Portrayed by Jeff Waggner)

Elizabeth “Bess” Stephens Lanham Cooper (1879–1973)
Born into a prominent Texas family, Bess endured early tragedy before rebuilding her life and raising two sons who went on to notable careers.

Living into her nineties, she was remembered for her resilience, heritage, and quiet strength. (Portrayed by Loree Ellis.)

Judge James L. L. McCall (1823–1904)
An early Texas legal pioneer, McCall built his career from Kentucky roots to the growing communities of Waco and Weatherford.

Known simply as “Judge McCall,” he helped shape the legal and civic foundations of Parker County during its formative years. (Portrayed by Gary Bruton.)

Sarah Beona Meng Lanham (1845–1908)
With Revolutionary War ancestry and a strong belief in education, Sarah became a respected figure in Texas civic life.

Married to a future governor, she was known for her intelligence, steady influence, and lifelong commitment to family and community. (Portrayed by Tracy Bruton)

Mary Prince Cocke Hood (1875–1956)
Deeply rooted in Parker County’s early history, Mary carried forward a legacy of civic service.

Active in organizations like the DAR and the Cemetery Association, she helped guide Weatherford’s transition from frontier town to modern community.

🍪 Let’s talk about the cookies

Now, I would be remiss not to mention the cookies. Not just any cookies. Homemade cookies: Snickerdoodles. Chocolate chip. Peanut butter. YUM!

I’m talking about the kind of cookies that make you pause mid-bite and go, “Okay… who made these?”

There’s nothing quite like standing in a historic cemetery, contemplating to stories from the past, while nibbling a fresh snickerdoodle.

Parker County Heritage Society

But events (and cookies) like this don’t just happen on their own!

They’re lovingly put together by groups like the Parker County Heritage Society, whose passion for preserving local history really shines through in every detail. If you’re local, it’s well worth checking them out or getting involved.

🖤 Cemeteries are for the living!

I know I say this a lot, but I’ll say it again: Cemeteries are for the living!

Cemetery tours like this remind us that history isn’t just dates and names—it’s people. Stories. Choices. Lives that still ripple outward.

And sometimes, all it takes is a costumed interpreter, a shaded path, and a really good cookie to bring our past back to life. The Parker County Historical Society’s Talking Tombstone Tour certainly knocked it out of the memorial park!

Angel of Grief: When Loss Becomes Sculpture

My latest article for American Cemetery & Cremation explores one of the most powerful funerary sculptures ever created: the famous Angel of Grief.

After encountering replicas of this iconic figure in cemeteries around the world, I finally stood before the original in Rome.

Wow! It was every bit as moving as I’d imagined.

Created by American sculptor William Wetmore Story after the death of his wife, the piece gave physical form to a loss he described as “utter abandonment.”

That raw honesty is what sets the Angel of Grief apart… and why it continues to resonate, appearing in cemeteries all over the world.

Oakland Cemetery’s 6th Annual Spring Picnic was amazing!

Between the sunshine, the food (including cemetery honey and mustang grape jam), and the chance to connect with fellow taphophiles, it was such a truly special day.

Events like this always remind me how wonderful this community is. Thank you to everyone who stopped by my table to say hello!

👻 Review: Arlington Ghost Tour

I was recently invited by US Ghost Adventures to take a haunted history tour in Arlington, Texas. It turned out to be a fun mix of local history, storytelling, and just enough spooky atmosphere to make it memorable.

Plus, much to my delight, the tour included visits to two wonderful historic cemeteries!

📚 Reader email: Graveyard Journal

First off: I’m a journal junkie!

I’ve always loved them: dream journals, idea journals, travel journals, art journals… if it involves writing things down, I’m all in. As a writer, I’m constantly taking notes, capturing details, and trying to hold onto those fleeting moments that might otherwise slip away.

So it’s probably no surprise that I eventually created one of my own: the Graveyard Journal, designed as a companion for recording the stories, symbols, and discoveries found in historic cemeteries.

Even so, I really wasn’t sure if other folks would ever use it. But much to my delight, several cemetery gift shops now carry it, and I just sent another shipment to the National Museum of Funeral History. (And yup—it’s on Amazon, too, where it has 45 reviews!)

Then a few days ago, I received a lovely email from a reader named Tiffany Bowdler. Turns out that Tiffany owns four of these journals. What a surprise out of the blue!

We had a nice little back-and-forth, and she kindly gave me permission to share her message and that great photo of her visiting Anne Rice’s mausoleum in New Orleans as you can see in the graphic above.

Pretty cool, eh? Makes me smile to think of Tiffany jotting down notes about that visit in her journal. Really lifted my spirits!

🪦 6th Annual Oakland Cemetery Picnic

A little sunshine, a lot of history… and yes, cemetery jam.

I had a great time at the 6th Annual Picnic at Oakland Cemetery in Dallas. What a wonderful community event!

More than anything, this day reminded me of something I say often—and believe deeply: Cemeteries are for the living!

For gathering with family and friends…
For connecting with nature…
For building community…

💜 Family: Passing the Torch

I loved sharing this day with family. My husband, Larry, was there, of course, and our three grandkids came along with their mom. And (joining us from even farther afield) my sister was visiting from Washington State.

Seeing Oakland Cemetery through my grandkids’ eyes was a powerful reminder of why events like this matter so much.

They even joined one of the guided tours led by the fabulous DV Jennings. I heard nothing but great things. My oldest grandchild (age 10) found it genuinely interesting, which says a lot.

Historic burial grounds aren’t just quiet places of the past. They’re spaces where stories are shared, where curiosity is sparked, and (perhaps most importantly) where the next generation begins to care.

Moments like this help pass the torch.

🍇 Nature: Cemetery Honey & Jam

And then there’s the Oakland Cemetery grape jam…

I always keep a jar of fresh Oakland Cemetery honey in my cupboard, but somehow I keep missing out on the jam. It sells out fast!

So I was thrilled to finally nab a jar of Elena Dunlap Stephens’ award-winning jam, made from wild Mustang grapes growing right there in the cemetery.

A lot of work goes into those little jars of jam!

After all, there would be no grape harvest without the help of Oakland Cemetery volunteers who remove tangled grapevines, restore trees, and build supports so those native grapevines can thrive.

It’s another example of how cemeteries can be living landscapes that give back to the community.

🌿 Native Plants & The Oakland Prairie Project

Speaking of nature… another highlight was the native plant sale hosted by the Oakland Prairie Project.

When it comes to native plants, historic cemeteries are often “living libraries,” hosting rare and resilient species.

Since I couldn’t leave my book table unattended, my sister Sharon picked out a couple of plants for me: Standing Cypress and Missouri Violet. (I’m especially excited about the violet because it has edible blooms!) Sure feels good to make our backyard a little more native and pollinator-friendly.

Growing native plants is yet another way Oakland Cemetery invites the community to take part in its ongoing story.

🏆 A Well-Deserved Honor

My family didn’t arrive in time to see Monica Newbury recognized with the Texas Patriot Award by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, but I’m so proud of her!

Monica has spent over a decade preserving Oakland Cemetery and helping build the kind of engaged, caring community that makes events like this possible.

It’s wonderful to see Monica honored in such a heartfelt way for her contributions to this burial ground and for creating so much community around it.

Oakland Cemetery Events & a TV Spot

If you’re on Facebook, I recommend following the Friends of Oakland Cemetery Dallas group. They regularly share volunteer opportunities, behind-the-scenes updates, upcoming events, and cute photos of the resident canine mascot, Rusty.

I can hardly wait until they announce the date for their Día de los Muertos celebration later this fall. It’s always meaningful, and so beautifully done… (And, in fact, I even include a few photos from Oakland Cemetery’s Dia de los Muertos in my new book Buried America Dallas-Fort Worth)

🪦 Community: Days Like This Matter

OK. If you’ve read this far, then I’m sure you agree that community cemetery events like the Oakland Cemetery Spring Picnic are more than just a pleasant afternoon.

We need more community cemetery events!

Cemetery picnics, clean-up days, guided walks, symbolism tours… these gatherings don’t just happen on their own. They exist because someone cares enough to organize them—and because people like us show up.

Last year, for instance, I enjoyed peach ice cream, square-dancing, headstone preservation, and wood-fired pizza at Dixon Cemetery’s community picnic:

So here’s my invitation to you:

Tiki Bars: As you can see from the photo above, Larry and I recently enjoyed a Hawaiian tiki bar.

Back in January, Larry and I had the absolute delight of exploring historic cemeteries in Sydney, Australia with two wonderful women the Association for Gravestone Studies (AGS) kindly connected me with.

Both are taphophiles extraordinaire, generous with their time and knowledge:

• Dr. Anne-Maree Whitaker (PhD, FRAHS, FRHistS) is a historian and author with a special interest in colonial history.

• Dr. Siobhan Lavelle (OAM) is an historical archaeologist, historian, and heritage specialist affiliated with Metropolitan Memorial Parks.

Thanks to the AGS connection, these gals met our ship when we docked in Sydney and took us on a whirlwind tour of historic burial grounds.

And just last week? Well… we did it all over again!

Same laughter. Same love for art, history, nature, and gravestones. Same feeling of, “How are we already such good friends?”

💜 The Dream Team

Every great cemetery jaunt needs a strategy—and our Sydney pals have it down to an art. Anne-Maree does most of the driving, while Siobhan provides a running commentary filled with history, symbolism, and stories that bring each headstone to life.

The pair have traveled together enough to pepper the conversation with the kind of hilarious anecdotes only longtime friends accumulate. Time always flies when we’re together. What struck me most (both in January and again this week) was how easy it all felt.

And as it turns out, we weren’t the only ones lucky enough to get Anne-Maree and Siobhan’s grand tour: when fellow AGS member Ron Romano visited a week before, these two gracious guides showed him around as well.

Wouldn’t it be fun if our visits overlapped sometime?

Four Cemeteries, Countless Stories

Between both Sydney visits, we explored four different burial grounds:

• Waverly Cemetery

• Rookwood Necropolis

• South Head General Cemetery

• Camperdown Cemetery

Each has its own history, personality, landscape, and unique surprises. Some overlook the sea… some are tucked into neighborhoods… and all of them are filled with moments that made me stop and wonder.

It’s impossible to do these places justice in a single post, and I’ll share more detailed posts later. But for now, here’s a little taste of our Sydney cemetery adventures.

Waverly Cemetery

The monuments at Waverly Cemetery cascade along the cliffside, offering the kind of grand ocean vistas that would make any realtor drool.

With its sweeping views and ever-changing light, it’s no wonder that this burial ground has featured in several movies and TV shows, including The Great Gatsby (2013), and Baywatch Down Under (1999.)

For those who enjoy Victorian-era cemetery symbolism, Waverley Cemetery is an absolute must-see. I catalogued as many symbols as I could as we meandered through the hilly landscape.

However, I mistook the fallen section of this monument for a Buddhist wheel at first glance. (We’ve been traveling through Asia recently, so my mind was in a different place!) Turns out that it’s a sea captain’s grave, and that is a ship’s wheel.

As I always say when exploring historic cemeteries: context is key!

Rookwood Necropolis

Calling Rookwood Necropolis massive is no exaggeration. In fact, it’s the largest burial ground in the Southern Hemisphere.

There’s no way Larry and I could have done Rookwood justice on foot. Even with Anne-Maree and Siobhan driving us around, it took several hours just to get a quick, breezy overview of its many sections.

Fun fact: Like England’s Brookwood Cemetery, Rookwood once had its own dedicated railway line to transport the dead and their mourners.

Fascinating, right? I’d say more… but this is just a little overview, remember? 😂

Siobhan laughed when I started snapping photos from every possible angle of the beautiful mourning woman pictured above.

“I thought you’d like her,” she said.

And she was right.

I know that’s likely meant to be a Bible she’s holding… but as a writer, anytime I see a book, I get a little excited. In my mind’s eye, I imagine her as a woman who read voraciously, wrote in secret, and kept her own thoughts tucked safely between the pages.

This Snow White statue is a real standout in Rookwood Necropolis. What makes it even more striking is that it’s a modern monument, dating to 2006.

So many contemporary memorials are plain headstones with minimal ornamentation. But this one breaks the mold in the most meaningful way. It’s such a touching testament to a parent’s love for their child. I find it adorable, unique, and utterly heartbreaking.

South Head General Cemetery

Although much smaller than Waverley, South Head General Cemetery is another Victorian-era burial ground with a marvelous sea view.

I found this angel quite intriguing. It’s always nice to see one with all her fingers and toes intact. Plus, there’s something charming about her relaxed, almost casual stance.

This unusual monument in South Head depicts Phil Garlick. He was a daring racecar driver, but according to his epitaph, his “career was tragically ended whilst about to achieve another of his triumphs.”

People often take comfort when someone, “died doing what they loved best.” In Mr. Garlick’s case, that certainly seems to the case.

Camperdown Cemetery

Established in 1848, Camperdown was once Sydney’s main cemetery. Today, this historic four-acre burial ground sits in the heart of the Newtown neighborhood, separated from the adjacent park by a surrounding wall.

Most of the monuments here, like the one above, are carved from sandstone, giving it a darker, more earthy feel than the gleaming marble found at Waverley and South Head.

Isn’t the Sexton’s Cottage in Camperdown Cemetery just adorable, with its charming little picket fence and that massive, fairytale-like tree out front—not to mention its prime location right beside the burial ground?

According to Siobhan, it’s available as a rental. Wouldn’t that be ideal digs for a taphophile? I could happily spend a month or two there… maybe even write a book. How about you?

Cemetery birding, anyone?

Cemetery birding, anyone? In all four burial grounds, I was delighted to see (and hear!) some wonderful Australian birds, including: Nankeen Kestrels, Butcher Birds, Common Mynahs, Cockatoos, and Noisy Miners.

The Laughing Kookaburra, however, was the only bird to actually sit and pose for me.

Seriously, most birds would have flown off as I gleefully trotted over to snap its photo, but this feathered fellow just sat there—finally tipping its head as if to say, “This is my best side.”

Fun with flora

We also enjoyed Australia’s plants and flowers. Check out this great big green spiky thing. It’s a pinecone from a bunya bunya tree.

According to Siobhan, many of these were planted in schoolyards. Perfectly harmless… until they mature and start dropping massive pinecones. Apparently, people have been seriously injured (even killed!) by falling bunya bunya pinecones.

So naturally, Larry picked up a hefty one and began envisioning dire scenarios. 😉

The Sydney gals always find a great spot for our lunch break, and the second time around it was the Bondi Icebergs Club—aka “The Bergs.” Perched above Bondi Beach, it boasts sweeping ocean views and famous pools clinging to the edge of the sea.

It’s a historic venue, known for its winter swimming tradition and “polar bear” club. Once a private members-only venue, it’s now open to visitors. They just scan your ID at the door, and in you go.

Sitting there, gazing out over the ocean after a morning spent wandering historic burial grounds, it struck me just how special days like this are.

I still marvel at how researching and writing about historic cemetery art and symbolism (a topic that often draws puzzled reactions, and occasionally outright disgust) continues to connect me with kindred spirits all over the world.

And today? Well, I’m especially grateful to Anne-Maree and Siobhan for sharing their time, knowledge, and laughter in Sydney, Australia with us—twice. 💜🪦💜

2026 has turned into an exciting year!

’Tis the Ides of March, my friends!

My taphophile pal extraordinaire, David M. Habben, surprised me with the birthday image above. How sweet is that?

The dog in the picture is Rusty, Oakland Cemetery’s unofficial canine docent, who happily posed for David during a recent visit to Dallas.

Not only did this make me laugh, but it reminds me how grateful I am for the wonderful community of cemetery lovers I’ve met over the years!

Oakland Cemetery 6th Annual Picnic in Dallas, TX

Speaking of Oakland Cemetery: If you’re in North Texas, I hope you’ll join me at Oakland Cemetery’s 6th Annual Spring Picnic.

This family-friendly event is a wonderful way to meet kindred spirits who share a love of historic cemeteries.

If you have a friend or partner who doesn’t quite get why you’re a taphophile, bring them along! If nothing else, they’ll enjoy the great food, local vendors (including me!), live music, cemetery tours, and crafts for kids.

The picnic takes place Saturday, April 11 from 11am–3pm at Oakland Cemetery in Dallas (3900 Oakland Cir).

Happy Year of the Fire Horse, y’all!

As you can see, Larry and I took the obligatory tourist photo with Bruce Lee while in Hong Kong. 😊

We spent the past ten days there, arriving just in time for Lunar New Year celebrations, which was a marvelous surprise! Between the harbor fireworks and the festive energy throughout the city, it was a truly special time.

But all good things must come to an end. It’s finally time for our winter travels to wind down and for us to head home…

Of course, we’re taking the long way: Yesterday we boarded a ship that will take a good long month to carry us back to the USA.

Konnichiwa friends,

It was love at first sight when I saw this cotton kimono in Nagasaki. Much to my surprise, it was only twenty dollars with the exchange rate. The shopkeepers tucked me into it, quickly taught me how to tie the obi sash, then laughed, “If you forget what we show you, remember YouTube!”

I happened to have a matching fan, so for fun I turned the moment into a vintage-style postcard as a little tribute to travel posters from bygone times.

Japan has been full of special moments: small surprises, unexpected beauty, and reminders of why I love wandering this great big world.

However…between writing my April American Cemetery & Cremation article about a famous angel and filling out my new publisher’s elaborate marketing plan (which somehow stretched to 15 pages!), all of my sea-day writing time vanished. Poof!

Good problems to have — but it means I didn’t have time to properly write about my wonderful cemetery day in Sydney with fellow AGS members Siobhan and Anne-Maree. I hope to share that story soon.

🖤 Black History Month & Cemetery Symbols

🇯🇵 A Tokyo Surprise

Since my last newsletter, Larry and I have visited Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagasaki. Each city carries layers of history and symbolism I’m only just beginning to understand.

One small moment in Tokyo surprised me with a wave of homesickness.

Wandering the maze of Tsukiji Market brought back memories of growing up in Washington State and working in Seattle’s Chinatown. Halfway around the world, I spotted a man wearing a Seahawks hat.

When I laughed and called out, “Go Seahawks!” he smiled and kindly posed for a photo.

It was a tiny moment, but travel is full of those quiet collisions between past and present, where pieces of home appear when you least expect them.

As we move through Japan, I’m taking notes, photographing carefully, and letting the experience settle. I want to give these places the attention they deserve and share them here when I can.
