Arlene Eisen has been a militant in the struggle against imperialism since the 1960s—first as a protester facing tear gas and later as a teacher and writer. She edited The Movement newspaper, and was a leading voice in the anti-imperialist women’s movement of the 1970s. For the next half century, she joined the anti-apartheid movement, the movement for justice in Palestine, including the olive harvest in the West Bank, the struggle for the right to return to New Orleans after Katrina, the movements against fascist U.S. police and their deputized militias and against the holocaust in Gaza—always standing in solidarity with national liberation struggles both inside and outside the U.S. Empire.

She is the author of Women of Viet Nam, Women and Revolution in Viet Nam, and the influential report Operation Ghetto Storm, which documented police killings of Black people in the United States. Her latest book, In The Worldwide Family of Militant Women, is a social history and memoir of revolutionary movements from 1962 to 1982. You can find her work here.

As some of you may have already heard on this week’s bonus episode, Séamus has made the difficult decision to step away from Turbulence. We couldn’t be more grateful for everything he has helped build over the past year. From the very beginning, Turbulence has been a collaborative effort between the three of us, and we’re grateful for everything Séamus contributed in helping build the show over its first 10 months.

Beginning next week, Dylan will take over hosting our public interviews as Turbulence enters its next phase. The editorial and political vision that has defined the show remains unchanged: in-depth conversations grounded in anti-imperialism and internationalism that explore the changing international order and the interrelated crises of the present. We are also expanding our scope to cover new topics and regions, and have an exceptional slate of episodes lined up through the Fall.

On the bonus feed, you’ll continue to hear Séamus through the end of August. After that, we’ll be joined by a very special previous guest who will be joining our team as a co-host of News of the Week for the month of September. We’ll announce who that is soon—so stay tuned.

Hi Turbulence community, it’s Séamus. I wish that I had better news to share with you, but unfortunately I have made the decision to leave Turbulence as co-host.

I will still be on the bonus episodes until the end of August, but I will be off the public interview episodes from now on as Dylan takes over those duties.

To be clear, I will not be splitting off and joining another podcast or anything like that. I will instead be returning to writing full-time.

This is a decision I have been considering for a while as I have tried my hand at this medium for the first time, with its requisite obligations, outside of simply being a guest on other programs. New opportunities and significant projects have continued to emerge for me as this show has gone on, and attempting to meet both the obligations of my career and my obligations to you, the listeners, has unfortunately become difficult to sustain.

While I am leaving the show, I am proud of what we have done on this program and am honored by what people have said it means to them. I have the utmost confidence that Dylan and M will continue to do great things with this as the Turbulence project continues without me.
