What happened: Just days after the Supreme Court let Trump’s mail-voting order move forward on procedural grounds, Boston federal judge Indira Talwani blocked it again this time in a fresh challenge filed by 23 states, the District of Columbia, and voting rights groups after the U.S. Postal Service issued its final rule.

Why it matters: Talwani, an Obama appointee, didn’t mince words: she called the rule “likely unconstitutional” and warned it would create “chaos” and disenfranchise voters with little time left before the November midterms. New York Attorney General Letitia James called it exactly what it is “a clear attempt by the federal government to interfere in elections it has no power to control.” The block lasts at least two weeks while the case proceeds, and the administration is expected to appeal straight back to the Supreme Court.

The bottom line: The fight over how you vote by mail this fall isn’t settled but for now, the courts are holding the line. Nearly a third of Americans vote by mail. This is worth watching closely.

Clyburn Says the Quiet Part Out Loud: Expand the Court

What happened: Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) told NBC’s “Meet the Press” this weekend that he backs expanding the Supreme Court from nine justices to 13 echoing a call already made by former VP Kamala Harris.

Why it matters: Clyburn, a longtime party elder, framed it as a response to a Court he says has “decided to reverse course” on decades of civil rights precedent. It’s a sign the once-fringe idea of court expansion is moving further into the Democratic mainstream ahead of 2028 even if Republicans are already using the moment to paint Democrats as court-packers.

The bottom line: Whether or not it happens, this is a debate the party is clearly done avoiding.

Lake Ontario Is Now “Lake America”

What happened: Trump signed an executive order this week renaming Lake Ontario one of the Great Lakes, which the U.S. shares with Canada to “Lake America.”

Why it’s happening: Because trade talks with Canada collapsed, Trump slapped a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, Canada slapped back with its own retaliatory tariffs, and apparently the appropriate presidential response to an international trade dispute is... renaming a lake. When asked what message he was sending, Trump first said “no message,” then immediately delivered several messages about Canada “ripping us off.”

The comeback of the year: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney calmly noted that the name “Lake Ontario” comes from a 400-year-old Wendat word meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big” and predates both Canada and the Declaration of Independence. In French, no less. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, meanwhile, got called a “flunky” by Trump for suggesting Canada inflict “massive pain” on the U.S. economy in response.

The bottom line: We’re in a real trade war with a real ally, hurting real workers on both sides of the border and the President’s move is Sharpie diplomacy on a paper map. We can’t make this up, we just have to out-organize it.

The ICE Agent Who Shot a Man, Lied About It, and Then... Walked Free

What happened: Remember the ICE agent charged with shooting a Venezuelan man in the leg during a Minneapolis raid and then lying about it? His name is Christian Castro.

He spent 90 days in a Texas jail waiting to be extradited to Minnesota to face charges. Texas Governor Greg Abbott simply refused to sign the extradition warrant. This week, a federal judge said he couldn’t force the issue, and under Texas law, Castro had to be released. He walked out of a Brownsville detention center Thursday morning and drove off.

Why this is infuriating: Castro fired into a home with children inside, then claimed the man attacked him with a snow shovel a story surveillance footage reportedly disproved.

Even Trump’s own DOJ dropped the charges against the men Castro accused. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison had warned Castro could flee to Mexico, citing jailhouse calls in which Castro discussed marrying a woman there and buying a house. The judge acknowledged the flight risk and let him go anyway.

Minnesota’s response: Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty didn’t hold back, asking bluntly how a governor who claims to be “tough on crime” justifies protecting a man who shot into a house full of kids. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has sued Texas over the whole mess.

The bottom line: Accountability shouldn’t depend on which state you can hide in. We’re watching, and we’re not letting this go.

SCOTUS Cracks the Door Open on Voter List Purges

What happened: In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court let the Trump administration move forward with parts of an executive order allowing DHS to compile state-by-state “citizen lists” and letting USPS limit mail-in ballot delivery based on them a plan 23 states and D.C. sued to stop.

Why it matters: The Court didn’t say the plan is legal. It just said the states challenged it too soon. Justice Sotomayor’s dissent (joined by Kagan) made sure to note the ruling says nothing about whether Trump’s directives have any actual legal authority behind them. A separate nationwide injunction is still blocking USPS from withholding ballots for now.

The bottom line: This is a preview, not the finale. And it’s exactly why every voting rights lawsuit, every state AG fight, and every vote in November matters more than ever.

The Supreme Court Just Opened the Door to Voter List Purges

What happened: In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court cleared the way for the Trump administration to move forward with key parts of an executive order letting the Department of Homeland Security build state-by-state “citizen lists” and letting the U.S. Postal Service limit who receives mail-in ballots based on those lists.

Why it matters: This is a huge deal heading into the midterms. Trump’s March executive order claims it’s about stopping noncitizen voting even though he’s offered no evidence of that happening at any meaningful scale, and even though it’s already illegal. Twenty-three states plus D.C. sued to block it.

The Court didn’t rule on whether the order is actually legal it just said the states moved to block it too early. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by Justice Elena Kagan, dissented, writing pointedly that the ruling does not mean Trump’s directives have any constitutional or statutory authority behind them.

The silver lining: A separate nationwide injunction from a case brought by the League of Women Voters is still in place, blocking the Postal Service from actually withholding ballots based on these lists for now. New York Attorney General Letitia James called the ruling “a painful setback” but vowed it “will not be the final word.”

The bottom line: This fight is far from over, but it’s a reminder of how close we are to a federal government building tools that could be used to make it harder for eligible voters especially in blue states to cast a ballot.

Historic Win: First Afghan American Elected to Congress

What happened: Progressive Democrat Aisha Wahab won a special election in California last week, becoming the first Afghan American ever elected to Congress. She’ll fill the East Bay seat vacated by disgraced Rep. Eric Swalwell.

Why it matters: AIPAC-aligned super PACs spent more than $6 million trying to defeat her one of the largest outside-spending efforts against a single House candidate this cycle. She won anyway, with 53% of the vote, after voters rejected ads that questioned whether she was “American enough.” She’ll face the same opponent again in November for a full term.

The bottom line: Big outside money lost and grassroots organizing won.

Court Strikes Down Trump’s Discriminatory Visa Ban

A Court Just Struck Down One of Trump’s Ugliest Policies

A federal judge in New York threw out the Trump administration’s ban on visa processing for people from 75 countries a policy that claimed immigrants from those nations were too likely to become a “public charge” and need public assistance.

Judge Jeannette Vargas didn’t mince words, ruling the policy was “contrary to law” and represented a “direct abrogation” of a federal statute that’s banned nationality-based discrimination in visa issuance since 1965.

The list of banned countries covered roughly 40% of the entire world, including Brazil, Colombia, Somalia, and Russia. The ruling forces the State Department to go back to fair, case-by-case visa reviews reuniting families who’ve been separated for months.

The case was brought by the National Immigration Law Center, Democracy Forward, the Legal Aid Society, and several other advocacy groups on behalf of families torn apart by the ban.

Trump Declares “Economic D-Day” on Iran

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a sweeping new round of sanctions Monday targeting Iran, dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast.” The goal: choke off every remaining revenue stream keeping the Iranian regime afloat, six months into the U.S.-Iran war.

This is a major escalation dressed up in dramatic branding Bessent literally compared it to the Allied invasion of Normandy. The sanctions target nearly 60 entities across the UAE, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Europe, and the administration is pressuring China specifically, since it buys roughly 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

Iran’s chief negotiator fired back that “no one believes” the bluster, and Iran has already threatened to seize ships in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation.

Even Trump’s own Treasury Secretary admits enforcement has been spotty the U.S. has had many of these sanctions on the books for years without consistently enforcing them.

Meanwhile, gas prices remain high and a Federal Reserve official said this weekend that inflation targets may be out of reach until the war actually ends.

A $400 Million Ballroom While Families Struggle

The Supreme Court temporarily allowed Trump to keep building his controversial $400 million White House ballroom, pausing a lower court order that would have stopped construction. Chief Justice John Roberts issued the stay while the full Court decides whether to take up the case.

A federal appeals court had already ruled against Trump, finding that Congress not the president has constitutional control over federal property and its funding. The 90,000-square-foot addition required demolishing the White House’s East Wing, and the administration is now defending it as an “integrated military complex” for national security, despite not making that argument when the project was first announced. Construction crews are reportedly working 20-hour days, seven days a week, to finish it fast.

A Progressive Upset Shakes Up Florida

Tuesday’s primaries delivered one of the biggest surprises of the cycle: progressive candidate Angie Nixon scored a major upset over former National Security Council aide Alex Vindman in the Florida Democratic Senate primary. It’s a signal that Florida Democrats are hungry for candidates who will fight not just resist politely.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, Trump’s endorsement record took a hit. Rep. Cory Mills, who had the president’s backing, lost his GOP primary amid a wave of scandal and controversy and notably, Trump didn’t even bother to reiterate his support before voters went to the polls. Even MAGA is starting to notice when their own are radioactive.

In the governor’s race, it’s now official: MAGA loyalist Byron Donalds will face off against David Jolly, a former Republican-turned-Trump critic who left the GOP behind in 2018. Florida’s governor’s race just became a real referendum on Trumpism including from voters who used to call themselves Republicans.

Minnesota Takes On Abbott And Wins the Moral High Ground

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed suit this week against Texas Governor Greg Abbott, demanding he finally extradite an ICE agent facing criminal charges for shooting a Minneapolis man during an immigration enforcement raid earlier this year. The victim, legally in the country, was hit in the leg by a bullet that also lodged in a child’s bedroom wall.

Abbott has sat on the extradition request for months, even though Texas has handed over other defendants to Minnesota without issue. Ellison’s message was blunt: no one not an ICE agent, not a Trump-aligned governor is above the law. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty called the whole situation “completely unnecessary,” noting Texas usually cooperates just fine when it’s convenient for them politically.

This is what real accountability looks like, and it’s Democratic officials leading the charge.

The Debt Bomb Trump Doesn’t Want to Talk About

New reporting confirms the national debt has now topped $40 trillion, driven by the combined weight of Trump’s tariffs and the wars he’s escalated abroad. Even Iran’s own foreign minister is using it as a talking point pointing to America’s debt spiral as the U.S. threatens “economic warfare” over the Iran conflict. Trump’s response? He dismissed the concerns as fake telling reporters in the Oval Office that a retired, unnamed admiral assured him the ship is “beautifully maintained and beautifully taken care of.”

Beautifully maintained, that’s what he said. About sailors who have been away from their families for eight and a half months in an active war zone with documented mental health struggles.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore a Democrat who served in the US Army did not hold back: “It pisses me off.” He’s right to be angry. Every American should be angry about this. These are real people and real families. And the president called it fake and moved on.

When Trump was asked whether eight and a half months at sea was too long, he said it was “not nearly long enough.”

Not nearly long enough. About sailors with mental health crises. Who haven’t seen their families in 240 days.

Now, the BBC has the right of due process, including “discovery”. And Trump must comply with the discovery order.

Senate unanimously agrees to oppose pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell

This doesn't prevent Trump from giving Maxwell a pardon though.

That’s nice of them to do that, I guess, but a President’s ability to pardon someone doesn’t hinge on what the US Senate thinks or doesn’t think about it. They’re totally irrelevant to the process and no President needs the consent of the Senate to pardon anyone for anything.

So I don’t really understand why they bothered to vote/agree on it.

This decision begins the wipeout of a $5.5 billion industry, threatens over 9,100 licensed Texas businesses, and destroys thousands of local jobs overnight. Banning safe, lab-tested products won’t kill demand; it just hands billions of dollars straight to illegal street dealers and neighboring states, while forcing Texans back toward alcohol which already kills over 13,700 Texans every year. Thousands of people will be arrested for possessing any THC products.

An outright ban isn’t the will of the people. Texas needs smart regulation and guardrails, not the sudden execution of a booming local economy.

We should embrace and celebrate our American land of opportunity, freedom and law, including our legal right to have our representatives in Congress vote to impeach Justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh as lacking the integrity and judgment that are required in order for them to continue to function in their office.

It is unambiguously clear that the Constitution states that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” The fact that we were a single vote away from overturning a right guaranteed by the Constitution should be terrifying for all of us. This law professor is absolutely correct: we need to impeach and remove Justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.

Not only is the plain text of the constitution CRYSTAL clear about birthright citizenship, but this EXACT issue was addressed in 1898, arguing the exact same issues, and SCOTUS at the time held that it means what we think it means to to this day. If you’re born on the US, unless you are not subject to our laws (meaning diplomatic immunity, you’re part of an invading army, and a couple other VERY specific instances) you are a US citizen.

1898 was only 30 years after the ratification of the 14th amendment. Ratifiers of the 14th were still alive at the time. It’s the height of hubris to think that almost 130 years later we have a better understanding about what the words on the text would have meant AT THE TIME IT WAS SIGNED than the people who were alive when it was signed.

Love it or debate it that energy is real. And it’s showing up in primaries in New York, Colorado, and beyond. The progressive movement that started with AOC in 2018 is now a genuine force inside the Democratic Party not a fringe, not a moment.

The DSA currently holds two seats in Congress. This cycle’s wins alone are on track to roughly double that number.

THE SENATE MAP: FIVE SEATS THAT COULD FLIP IN NOVEMBER

The five Senate seats most likely to flip:

Justice Sotomayor did not hold back. She spent nearly 20 minutes reading her dissent aloud from the bench an extraordinary move calling the ruling “grievously wrong” and warning it “reshapes the structure of government in a fundamental way.”
