This week, I wanted to talk more about the characters, specifically the sibling duos that I explored throughout the 12 volumes of TBATE. Arthur was always meant to be an older brother, but to whom, that was the question…

I will focus the first half of this post on our main characters and a few other faces and duos that comic readers will be familiar with. However, I’ll later dive into some novel spoilers, discussing siblings that only novel readers are familiar with. Here’s a sneak peek of this week’s newest lore drop on Patreon!

In Volume 7 of the novel (and yesterday’s comic episode) Arthur encounters a variety of corrupted mana beasts. The thunder-wolves, razor grimalkin, iron hyrax, midnight grizzly—I tried to come up with names that sounded fantastical but also intuitive, to give readers an immediate idea of what it might look like. If I said a “mistibob goomiboozer” attacked Arthur, it’d be very difficult to imagine what the hell sort of beast it is, so I tried to be mindful of the names and variance so they didn’t feel like mana beasts from a single ecosystem. (But actually, what do you think a mistibob goomiboozer beast looks like? lol)

When I first published TBATE on Royal Road in 2015, I thought the magic in this world had to be special—I thought it had to be different. Ki and aether were planned from the very beginning. The joyride was figuring out how to get there—and what they would be called. I was a reader of the classics and several progression fantasies myself, so I was worried I’d fall into the trap of creating a magic system that was too familiar. However, I also knew I needed a way to introduce readers to ki and aether, so it didn’t become an overwhelming system to understand. Thus, I decided to walk myself right into that trap and relied on said familiar systems as a gateway.

Some members think the Twin Horns were named after the gauntlets that Reynolds uses in battle, but they were actually named after the two long horns of a mana beast that became Helen’s bow. Reynolds adopted the name for his gauntlets in honor of the party’s name afterward.

This week, we just dropped a new episode featuring Circe’s team!

Writing from Circe’s POV challenged me to really start thinking about the culture of Alacrya. I had the rune-based magic system already thought out beforehand: marks, crests, emblems, regalias; but Circe’s chapters became a platform for me to explore other Alacryan cultural beliefs like the importance of “blood” and what the war meant to the Alacryans.
