At Ubuntu International, we believe that a flourishing community is built upon more than meaningful work and shared responsibility. Human beings were also created to laugh, to move, to celebrate, and to enjoy life together. Across Africa and throughout the world, play has always been an essential part of culture, strengthening families, building friendships, improving health, and reminding us that joy is a gift meant to be shared.

As we continue exploring the Seven Pillars of Ubuntu, we are pleased to share this reflection by Aleena, who reminds us that play is not a distraction from life—it is one of the ways we fully experience it.

We Were Created to Play

There’s an old saying: “Work without play makes Jill a dull girl.” And it’s true.

We were not created to only work, to only worry, to only carry burdens. We were created to laugh, to run, to play games, to move our bodies, and to rest.

Play is not a reward for when the work is done. Play is what gives us the strength to do the work in the first place. It sharpens our minds, strengthens our bodies, and reminds us that we are human.

And let me put this plainly:

If the sound of joy disturbs you...

If exercise feels like a waste...

If watching people play sports feels like a distraction...

Then maybe it’s not the play that’s the problem.

Maybe it’s time to check in—with your heart, with a sister, or even with a professional.

Because a soul that cannot play is a soul that is tired.

Play Starts Before Birth

Let me say that play is not made. It is born in us, and that is why children play in the womb. They kick, they stretch, they respond to movement and to sound. God designed us this way—to move, to explore, to respond to joy from day one.

Play is not something we learn later. It is how we were wired from the beginning.

Play Is a Child’s Full-Time Work

Watch any child and you’ll see it: Eat. Play. Sleep. Repeat.

That is their whole life—and it is perfect.

Children play daily because play is how they learn, grow, and make sense of the world. Through play and exercise they develop their bodies, their minds, their friendships, and their confidence.

If we honor children, we must honor their play. Because when we take play away from a child, we take childhood away. And for mothers, only a child who is healthy loves to play. Inability to play may signify deteriorating health.

Play Heals the Spirit and the Body

Life is heavy. Work, bills, grief, and responsibility weigh us down. Play is the reset.

Exercise releases stress. Sports release tension. Fun restores the soul.

In African tradition, community games, races, and physical play were medicine. They kept bodies strong and hearts light.

Play Builds Community

Play is the great equalizer. On the field, in a race, in a game—titles disappear. Doctor, student, mother, elder—we all become teammates.

Ubuntu teaches us umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu—I am because we are.

When we play together, we remember how to be “we.” We learn cooperation, fairness, discipline, and respect.

Play Reveals the Richness of a Simple Life

In many parts of Africa, even in places with the least material wealth, you will find children running, jumping, and laughing.

This teaches us something profound: life is not only about the things we chase. It is also about health, movement, and joy in the present moment.

A ball, a skipping rope, a race in the dust—these cannot be bought.

Play cannot be traded for anything. It is wealth that poverty cannot take and money cannot buy.

Play Unlocks Focus, Discipline, and Teamwork

Children learn the world through play. Adults stay sharp through it too.

When we exercise, we build endurance. When we play sports, we learn strategy, focus, and sacrifice.

Nowhere is this clearer than in sport.

Take the FIFA World Cup.

For one month, the world stops.

Nations that speak different languages and live on different continents suddenly believe in one thing together.

Soccer unites the world. It teaches competition with respect and teamwork with purpose. Strangers become family because they are chasing the same goal.

That is the power of play—it turns “me” into “us.”

Play Restores Dignity and Joy

Even in hardship, people find ways to play. Even in war, children make games out of stones. Even in grief, we find a moment to laugh.

This is because play reminds us: we are more than our struggles.

We are strong.

We are alive.

In Closing

In the rush to “be productive,” we often tell ourselves: I’ll play when the work is done.

But Ubuntu tells us the opposite: the work is done better when we play.

A community that plays together, stays together.

A body that moves together, heals together.

A people that exercise and rejoice together, endure together.

Work without play makes us dull—but play makes us whole.

And in honoring Pillar 5: Play (Fun, Exercise and Sports), we honor the health of our bodies, the joy of our spirits, and the strength of our community.

Ubuntu Closing Reflection

Play is one of humanity’s oldest and most universal languages. Across every culture and every generation, people have gathered to run, dance, sing, celebrate, and enjoy life together. These simple acts strengthen our bodies, refresh our spirits, deepen our relationships, and remind us that joy is not something we earn after the work is finished—it is part of living a healthy and meaningful life.

At Ubuntu International, we recognize play as an essential part of building thriving communities. Whether through children’s games, family recreation, traditional sports, dance, exercise, or community celebrations, play helps create healthier individuals, stronger families, and more connected communities. It teaches teamwork, resilience, compassion, and the simple joy of being together.

As we continue exploring the Seven Pillars of Ubuntu, may we remember that caring for one another also means creating space for laughter, movement, and celebration. When we play together, we strengthen the bonds that unite us and affirm the timeless wisdom of Ubuntu:

Across the African continent and throughout the diaspora, the wisdom of our ancestors continues to speak through the places where life is created, nurtured, and shared.

The kitchen has always been more than a place where food is prepared. It is a place where culture is preserved, where stories are carried from one generation to the next, and where love becomes an offering.

Through the philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — we recognize that nourishment has never been an individual act. Every meal connects us to the Earth that provides, the hands that prepare, the ancestors who carried the knowledge before us, and the communities who gather around the table.

The kitchen is one of humanity’s oldest sacred spaces. It is where the gifts of creation are transformed into nourishment. It is where families are strengthened, traditions are protected, and the invisible prayers of those who prepare food become part of every meal.

As we explore this wisdom through Aleena Katushemererwe’s African perspective, we honor the traditions that have sustained generations and recognize their continued importance in our world today.

The Kitchen Is Not a Room. It Is an Altar

Life begins with how we fuel the vessel — the body that carries our soul. Our souls thrive most when our bodies are strong, healthy, and given the nourishment they require.

Food, water, vegetables, fruits, and herbs are the foundation of the human body. Our very existence depends on them. The body is designed to self-heal, resist illness, and renew itself according to the quality of nutrients it receives.

Example: A child given greens, beans, clean water, and fruit recovers from illness faster and grows with strength to work and learn.

To understand this fully, we must remember that Mother Earth is the source of all life. The plants and animals she sustains provide the building blocks for our bodies.

The Kitchen is the sacred space where unspoken prayers are offered. It is where life is anchored. It is where the soul and body unite to create flavor, nourishment, and longevity.

The Kitchen as the Heart of the Home

In traditional African society, a Kitchen meant a home. A dwelling was not called a home without a kitchen.

Everyone understood that the kitchen held more importance than even the bedroom. Families ate beside the fireplace and slept close to the cooking stones. You could manage without many things in a home, but never without a kitchen.

When a woman was married into a new family, she was first welcomed as a guest. She would share meals at the same table with her mother-in-law. This was her period of introduction and observation.

After several weeks, even if the husband was still living with his parents, the woman was given her own separate kitchen. This marked her full initiation into womanhood. She became a wife in her own right — the anchor and center of her family — the moment she received her own kitchen.

This helps us address modern ideas that say:

“A woman is not meant to stay in the kitchen. A woman is not a slave to the kitchen. A woman’s place is not the kitchen.”

These statements confront gender inequality, and that conversation is necessary. But they can also obscure a deeper, timeless truth.

No woman is complete without her kitchen.

Example: On a spiritual level, when her hands tend the firestones, her palm stirs the pot, and her eyes watch the dough rise, she renews her inner strength. In the quiet meditation of cooking, she finds calm and clarity. It is at the kitchen altar that she offers her most sincere prayers — for good health, long life, successful children, and healing.

Furthermore, husbands honored wives who were skilled cooks.

Bateeka was the name given to a new wife known for excellent cooking.

Bagabura was the name given to one known for hospitality, serving fine meals to her husband and guests.

This was womanhood. It was not about oppression. It was about purpose and honor.

Therefore, even in times when we have little time for the kitchen, it remains true: a woman’s spiritual life and prayers are incomplete if she never pauses at the kitchen altar.

Mom’s Food Is the Best

Many people say, “No one cooks like my mom.”

It is rarely because she was a professional chef.

It is because of the love infused at the fireplace. It is the soul poured into the cooking. It is the love given with every serving.

That is why a mother’s food tastes different.

Example: When adults say, “I miss my mom’s food,” they are really saying, “I miss my mother.”

The Kitchen as a Place of Healing

The transformation of raw ingredients into a nourishing meal is a sacred and mindful practice. It mirrors the rituals performed at an altar.

Historically, the kitchen stove was the primary source of a home’s heat and life-giving energy.

It is a place of daily devotion where love, intention, and care are poured into feeding those we cherish.

When a mother feeds her children, her eyes and soul silently pray for their prosperity, long life, and good fortune. The joy a mother feels as she watches her children eat is living proof of the importance of the kitchen.

When a child falls ill, a mother notices — among many signs — that the child refuses food. Her instinct for her child’s wellbeing is directly measured by the child’s ability to enjoy her cooking. This alone is testament to the healing and life-giving power that the kitchen provides.

The kitchen is also the place that unites people. It represents the highest act of community and survival. It is where family lineage, traditional wisdom, and blessings are passed from elders to younger generations.

Example: A grandmother teaching her granddaughter to grind millet while sharing stories of ancestors. That is the kitchen teaching.

The Symbolism of the Three-Stone Hearth

Every culture gives meaning to the fire.

In African tradition, the three-stone hearth is sacred. It represents unity, balance, and the feminine center of the home.

No pot can stand if even one stone is missing.

The hearth is built with intention: one cornerstone to bear the weight, and two supporting stones to create stability.

Example: The three stones mirror mother, father, and child. They mirror body, mind, and spirit. They mirror past, present, and future. Remove one, and the meal cannot be cooked. Remove one, and the family cannot stand.

The hearth teaches us that strength is found in interdependence.

That what appears simple — three stones and fire — is actually the architecture of life itself.

The wisdom of the kitchen belongs to all humanity.

The simplest acts often carry the deepest meaning: planting seeds, preparing meals, teaching children, gathering our families, and welcoming our neighbors.

Aleena (Brenda Katushemererwe) serves as the Ubuntu African Coordinator, working alongside community leaders throughout Africa to strengthen collaboration, women’s empowerment, youth leadership, education, and the Seven Pillars of Ubuntu. Born and raised in Uganda among the Banyankore people, Aleena offers a deeply personal perspective on what Ubuntu means—not simply as an idea, but as a way of life that has shaped generations.

The Answer Is Ubuntu

The answer to the cries of despair, pain, war, and injustice across the world is Ubuntu. I come from an East African lineage of Banyankore-speaking people, the Bantu. My story is deeply connected to the shared pursuit of “Ubuntu” among Africa’s many tribes and clans.

Ubuntu Lives in Our Culture

In my hometown and in the villages around it, our people live by many cultures. You can see this in our different lifestyles, customs and rituals, food, and even in the way we look.

Even though centuries of division caused by colonialism, political structures, and slavery left behind deep beliefs that some people are more important than others, the call to Ubuntu is still a powerful and unbroken thread in our culture.

When the Banyankore describe a person of good character, they say, “Ayine Obuntu.” It means, “This person has a good heart that shows love, mercy, kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness toward others.”

If we go further to the Southern African meaning of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — it strengthens the idea that we are all equal in existence. It reminds us that our lives are complete only because we depend on one another. I can exist and reach my full potential because you are here to support me. In the same way, my purpose is to support you, without question or debate.

That is why we should never grow weary of helping those who need us. Life loses its meaning if we do not lift others up. And as we do, they also help us complete the circle of life and give it value.

In my village, a person’s behavior as a good human being is measured by “Obuntu.” When someone lacks compassion and consideration, we say of them, “Tayine buntu.”

Ubuntu to an African is also a reflection of godliness.

At its core, it is a call to treat others the way we want to be treated. Obuntu in the Banyankore tribe means being a good human who puts empathy first, treats strangers with fairness, cares for orphans and vulnerable children, shows mercy to stepchildren, forgives, and lives in a way that honors God’s law. To live Ubuntu is to be God’s ambassador on earth — acting in ways that please Him through how we treat people.

My Work at Ubuntu International

When I was appointed African Coordinator at Ubuntu International in January 2026, months after serving in the Ubuntu International Women’s Empowerment Program, I did not realize I was stepping into an organization that carries the remedy for the world’s pain and struggles.

Through the weekly Thursday meetings I was asked to moderate, I came to understand their mission more deeply. Every week, they hold a fellowship that highlights the work happening across the growing network of Ubuntu Hubs. There are now five hubs and several partner organizations. Ubuntu International is committed to strengthening these hubs through the Seven Pillars.

When you stop and think about it, there is no greater way to serve humanity than to meet people where they are most in need. People need food, shelter, health, safety, education, and opportunity. Ubuntu is actively providing these essentials.

With the full commitment of its founders — Gard Jameson, Pato Banton, and Antoinette Rootsdawtah — Ubuntu is built on love, compassion, and kindness. Our guiding principle is to empower Ubuntu Hubs worldwide so these values can spread into every community. Without a doubt, this is the new movement that will bring healing to the world. As one hub puts it so well: “We Rise by Lifting Others.”

Ubuntu Is Life Itself

Ubuntu also gives us the word Muntu, which reflects life. A living person is Omuntu. When life ends, we say the person is a corpse, deceased, or dead. So when we speak of Ubuntu, we are calling people back to life. We are affirming that we are alive, and that the purpose of being alive is shown through our actions and how we use our life to do good.

In many African villages, if a man is a thief, a drunkard, a killer, or someone who wanders aimlessly with no purpose, the elders will say, “Ogwe timuntu, akafa kubi.”

In plain words, it means, “That is not a person; that is a walking dead.” It means he has lost the essence of humanity — Ubuntu. He has also lost the character and good conduct that make a person truly human.

From this, we learn that Ubuntu is more than unity. It is a call to live at a higher level, to become responsible citizens who help build the kind of world we all long for.

Children grow to trust the people who love and care for them. Babies smile and laugh when they see caring faces. The lesson is simple: the more we reach out and care, the more joy we create. The more we teach compassion and make kindness common, the more people will live by it.

The Ubuntu philosophy of “I am because We are” also reflects the African village truth: “It takes a village to raise a child.” In raising children, Ubuntu means we treat every child as our own and share the responsibility for them. This shared effort makes life richer and more meaningful, like a well-played symphony. So if it takes a village to raise a child, think about what happens to a child who has no village. African proverbs carry deep wisdom, and the wisdom of the village is one of them.

The Ubuntu Philosophy, therefore, gives us a clear blueprint for action.

The world may be full of chaos and uncertainty, but Ubuntu is the answer.

It felt like a reunion—like family coming back together, even if some were meeting for the first time. That’s the spirit of Ubuntu… I am because we are.

Everything I love was there—connection, laughter, shared purpose—and at the center of it all was what we know, no matter where we are in the world:

And when you bring people together like that… hearts open, minds open—and that’s where real learning begins.

We came together to share something simple, but powerful. Not something new. Not something imported. Just a reminder of what’s already here. Cassava leaves, pumpkin leaves, mushrooms—foods that grow all around the community, yet are often overlooked, thrown away, or in some cases only given to animals.

And what we saw, once again, is that the issue is not always lack. It’s awareness.

When you take the time to teach how to prepare these foods properly, when you explain what they actually do for the body, when people can taste it for themselves… something changes. You can see it happen. What was once dismissed becomes valuable. What was once ignored becomes gold.

The Moment Everything Shifted

There was a moment that stayed with me. In Kabale, potato leaves are not considered food for people. That’s for goats. So when that came up, there was laughter, a little disbelief, curiosity… and then Emmanuella broke it all the way down.

And just like that, you could feel the shift.

That’s the kind of education that actually changes lives. Not something far away. Something you can take home and do that same day.

When Everyone Steps In

What made the day even more beautiful is that it wasn’t just the women. We had grandmothers, grandfathers, guardians—and the men showed up in the kitchen too.

I was so happy to see that.

Because this is not about separating roles. It’s about strengthening the whole community. When everyone understands how to nourish the body, healing multiplies.

Aleena’s women’s team—Ritah, Emmanuella, and Anne—held the space with so much grace. Baby on the hip, stirring the pot, teaching, guiding, laughing.

This is what real empowerment looks like. It’s not polished. It’s lived. It’s shared.

Food, Music… and Something Deeper

And then… the music came in.

If you know anything about our people, you already know—our love language is food and music. And that day, both were in full expression.

We had Pato Banton and Antoinette Rootsdawtah, alongside Joe, Akisa, Nyungu Creatives Village, the Grace Villa Ambassadors, Smile Africa Foundation, and NYTC (Nakivale Young Talents Community).

From Nakivale to Kenya, Gulu to Kabale, and even reaching from the U.S., it felt like the whole spirit of Ubuntu showed up in one place.

At one point I had to laugh because I forget sometimes… and then moments like that remind me

But it wasn’t about any one person. It was about the collective. The dancers, the singers, the children, the joy.

It felt like Africa’s Got Talent… but rooted in purpose.

A Voice from the Heart

Ruth said it best:

“Good evening from Kabale where we are STILL smiling, feeling so blessed and honored. The day was electric from beginning to end. We knew it would be good, but we didn’t expect it to be this full, this layered, this full of love and sisterhood and brotherhood. Our people’s love language is food and music, and both were there in plenty. We saw mindsets shifting in real time… On behalf of my children, thank you. You are now a beautiful chapter in our Grace Villa story.”

And honestly, that says everything.

How Change Really Happens

Because this is not just about one event.

This is how change actually happens.

Not in one big dramatic moment, but in these small, real shifts. A woman learning to cook what she once threw away. A man stepping into the kitchen and becoming part of the process. A community realizing that what they need has been there all along.

Through this work with Ubuntu International, we are continuing to build something that connects nutrition, empowerment, education, and healing across communities.

Ubuntu to the world!

I would like to personally invite you to a very meaningful moment for all of us at Ubuntu International — the World Premiere of the Widow’s Housing Project in Uganda.

Where It All Began

This project did not begin as a grand plan or organizational strategy.
It began with people. It began with listening.

Over time, I met many widows whose lives had been forever changed by the sudden loss of their husbands. Alongside grief came uncertainty — loss of shelter, financial instability, and the heavy responsibility of caring for children alone.

What touched me most was not only their struggles, but their resilience. Despite hardship, they carried hope for their families and their future.

Why This Is Personal

I started this project because I know, first-hand, what it feels like to have no home.

I have lived in that place of uncertainty — where the nights are cold and fear weighs heavily. I have felt the loneliness of having nowhere to rest, the anxiety of not knowing if the next day will bring safety or shelter, and the helplessness that comes with having no roof over your head.

That pain is unforgettable.

And it became my deepest motivation to act — to ensure that other families, especially widows and children, do not have to endure the same fear and suffering I once knew.

A Question That Changed Everything

These experiences led me to ask a simple but powerful question:
What can we do together to make a real difference?

The answer became the Widow’s Housing Project.

More Than a Home

This initiative is about more than building houses. It is about restoring dignity and creating a foundation where healing can begin.

A safe home provides protection, stability, and peace of mind. It allows children to grow in security and gives mothers the strength to rebuild their lives with confidence.

When a family has a home, hope becomes real again.

Ubuntu in Action

At Ubuntu International, we are guided by the spirit of Ubuntu — “I am because we are.”

This philosophy reminds us that humanity is deeply connected. One person’s struggle is never isolated, and one act of kindness can ripple across an entire community.

The Widow’s Housing Project reflects this belief in action. It shows what becomes possible when compassion moves beyond words and becomes shared responsibility.

We’ve been relatively quiet these past few months. Not because nothing was happening, but because so much was. We’ve been organizing, building, strengthening relationships, and intentionally growing what has now become the Ubuntu Family Network—while continuing to show up, listen, and walk alongside our communities.

Ubuntu keeps teaching me the same truth, again and again:

I am because we are.

This letter is my way of honoring what we’ve lived through together, sharing what we’ve built, and opening the door to what’s coming next.

Strengthening the Roots

One of the most important things we did in 2025 happened quietly, behind the scenes.

We built structure that can hold love.

This year, we formally established:

• The Ubuntu Women’s Empowerment Program
  Centering women and girls through leadership, wellness, livelihood skills, and dignity.

• The Ubuntu Arts Division
  Honoring music, dance, visual art, and storytelling as sacred tools for healing, culture, and economic empowerment.

• The Ubuntu Marketing & Tech Division
  Creating ethical storytelling and digital systems that amplify without exploiting and connect without erasing.

2025 taught us how to let spirit and structure walk together.

Looking Ahead: The Uplifting Ubuntu Project 🌍

I’m deeply grateful to finally share something we’ve been nurturing for a long time.

In southern Uganda, in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, live 15 young refugee artists who are determined to build their professional career as artists while providing a safe and supportive environment for refugee children and youth to learn art and express themselves creatively.

Over 3 years ago, they came together to form Nakivale Young Talent Community (NYTC). NYTC is both an artist collective as well as a free arts education program providing 80 refugee children and youth Monday through Saturday with basic and advanced art instruction as well as creative expression opportunities such as singing, guitar, fashion shows/modeling, storytelling and illustration.

Their art tells stories of resilience, hope, and cultural pride.

It’s hard to imagine such beauty emerging from a place many would view as a last resort. Yet, these kids from Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and other neighboring countries, who fled their homes seeking safety, have created masterpieces that deserve global recognition.

All of the teachers (and their students) are in the Settlement because they fled with or without their families from East African countries experiencing conflict, climate change disasters, and food insecurity.

Seeking their way in this new life, each of these young refugee artists turned to visual, creative expression as a way to express their emotions, to work through the trauma and pain of being a refugee while also expressing their hopes and dreams for the future. Over several years, they started to find each other, cluster together, build new friendships and become each other's second family. Then in 2021, under the leadership of now 22-year old founder , they formalized their efforts and started Nakivale Young Talent Community (NYTC). NYTC is now a registered community-based organization and they operate as an artist collective and arts education program.

Producing & Selling Art

This Spring 2024 was a turning point for NYTC. In partnership with Emily Kaminsky of The Creative Convergence and RainMaker Design, NYTC held its first ever virtual art expo showcasing the artwork of 10 of the artists to the world.

Through ticket sales and donations, including a donation from Stand Up For Justice, they raised enough funds to purchase paints, brushes, and canvases for the artist-teachers to produce new artwork for sale and to support their free art education programming.

Within a month, the artist collective produced 30+ new art pieces. Check out this post on the Refugee Artist Support Circle (a new section on Emily’s Creative Convergence Substack) that features a gorgeous short video of the artists creating with my piano music.

One painting in particular, The Beauty of Africa by Congolese refugee artist Mansur Kabera, captivated me.

It became the inspiration for our mission to support NYTC. This is more than just about art—it’s about providing these young creators a platform to shine and helping them thrive despite the challenges they face.

Community, Creativity, and Collaboration

Emily Kaminsky, of and who has been a steadfast supporter of our Ubuntu family, introduced the idea of using Substack as a storytelling tool. With her guidance, we’ve empowered others to share their Ubuntu stories, amplifying voices across the globe. Emily also partnered with Stand Up for Justice, another organization close to my heart, to find ways to uplift NYTC.

In late September, we held another online Art Exhibit called the World Through My Eyes, this time featuring the work of 16 artists: 10 from NYTC, 3 from Future Within CBO in Kibera Slums (Kenya), and 3 from Refuge Art School in the USA.

At the same time, we hosted an online auction showcasing the kids’ work to raise funds and bring attention to their incredible talents. That week was emotional on so many levels. The group’s founder faced a serious health scare but thankfully survived. You can read more about the harrowing lead up to the art expo here, on Emily’s Refugee Artist Support Circle September newsletter.

Despite these challenges, the kids presented their art during the Zoom event (the full replay can be found here on YouTube), sharing the meanings behind their creations. Their passion and pride shone brightly.

We also discovered that their talents go beyond visual art—they’re incredible musicians too! They sent us a remix of Go Pato that moved us to tears. Their creativity isn’t just about survival; it’s about thriving, finding joy, and feeding their souls through expression.

I absolutely love this piece (above) titled The Impatience Within created by NYTC art teacher, Krehim Sharon (whom you can read about more here). It resonates deeply with me, reminding me of the thought adjuster within our minds—a guiding presence that leads us toward truth, beauty, and goodness when we take the time to truly listen.

As part of Stand Up for Justice, we bid on and purchased four more paintings during the auction. I was particularly drawn to the stunning depictions of African women. For me, these works symbolize the Rise of the Divine Feminine, and their beauty feels perfectly aligned with the transformative energy of this moment in time.

A Gift to the World

These young artists remind us that art has the power to transcend circumstances. It heals, inspires, and connects us. Supporting them is more than just a mission; it’s a privilege.

Highlights from the Day

🎥 The Spirit of Ubuntu Documentary: Screening this International award-winning film opened minds and hearts, showcasing global perspectives and our shared human journey.

🌱 Gardening Giveaway: A generous donation of herbs and vegetable plants from Lowe’s allowed attendees to take home tangible resources for starting their own gardens. These plants became symbols of sustainability and growth.

🎶 Live Performances: Soulful performances by Nikki Black, Ione Angeles, Pato Banton, Antoinette Rootsdawtah, and Seraphim filled the day with joy and energy, connecting hearts through music.

🧘 Sound Healing and Meditation: Kiyomi Zenutopia’s Sound Bowl Healing and Qi Gong Meditation sessions provided transformative moments of calm and restoration, resonating deeply with attendees.

🎁 Community Contributions: Donations from Murrieta Hot Springs, including two day passes and horseback riding lessons offered by Lake Elsinore Equestrian Club.

Looking back at our goals, we’re proud to say they were met—and then some! Attendees left inspired by the documentary and eager to apply what they learned about sustainability.

Many participants expressed gratitude for the plants they received, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainable practices. Sparking interest in gardening and sustainability. Combining live performances, meditation, and cultural exchange created a well-rounded and enriching experience.

Ubuntu Day is just the beginning. As we plan our next event, we envision:

  Ubuntu Empowerment Fund

We met up with Anne Okelo of , a lively, upbeat young woman, passionate about climate change and women’s empowerment. Her organization Sustainable Innovations is committed to empowering women and girls through simple, innovative solutions. The women she works with are mostly widows, teen mothers, and other vulnerable women in her local communities. During their journey, they visited the Tanyoka Community-Based Organization (CBO), which has empowered its members to become major producers of energy-efficient cookstoves. These women are earning an income and playing a significant role in protecting the environment. They also met the Kangongo Women’s Group, a collective of widows dedicated to farming practices and table banking, ensuring they can provide food for their families.

Anne accompanied us to Butere in Western Kenya, where we met with Pastor Moses Makachia and his wife Jenipher Nyangah. We were introduced to Teacher Bilha Nyaboke Meraba of Buchenya School first. It was absolutely remarkable to see how they set up the school and its program. Not only do they learn about syntropic agroforestry, permaculture, agriculture, and mushroom farming, but they also get to take the food home to their families and sell the excess to pay for their school fees. We are excited to see how Teacher Bilha creates a template to use for other schools across Kenya and possibly the world!

Our next stop was Homa Bay where we visited David Otieno at Kotengo Village Farm, Omito Abraham Owuor at K5 Village Farm, and Rose from Happy Organic Farm. Paul Odiwuor Ogola at Permo Africa Center showed us a variety of different growing techniques ranging from aquaponics, agroforestry, to permaculture.

The permaculture tour provided valuable insights into successful practices and areas requiring improvement. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the recommendations, there is significant potential to enhance permaculture practices and their impact in the regions.

Even before The Spirit of Ubuntu Documentary was completed we had gone back to Kenya for a promotional music tour as well as visiting some friends. That turned into learning more about permaculture, agriculture, agroforesty and regeneration. The intent at that time was to recruit Van Reenen, The Forest Farmer, to help others who were growing food as well as Lilian Muthui of Compassion Teenage Mothers who is featured in the Spirit of Ubuntu Documentary.

Now we are embarking on a tour across Kenya to visit 13 sustainable projects led by individuals and organizations. I keep saying “we are stronger together when we come together in the Spirit of Ubuntu”.

Our syntropic agroforestry experts Roland Van Reenen and his wife Esther “Dee J Essy” are joining us for our tour. One of the reasons why I have Roland as my number one expert by my side is seeing the work he has done all over the world. We could use his skills back in America where we live in SoCal. Dry climate and little water. He has proven solutions that work and can save us back in California.

We had spent some time with them last year when Pato was doing his promotional tour from his hit song “Go Pato”. Apparently the song became a huge hit last year and everyone recognizes the song and even him everywhere we went. People out of nowhere would just say “Go Pato”.

I’m excited to see everything but one thing that really is sticking out for me is Igati Community’s mission for the launch of the “one million beehive project” at Timau Stadium in Timau, Kenya north of Nairobi.

Led by Alfred Gitonga Ndumba, Igati Mission has so much going on: rabbit and poultry farming, dragon fruit farming and the list just goes on and on!

For someone new to the Film Festival Circut, I am absolutely blown away, thoroughly impressed, and forever committed to filming and documenting stories of Ubuntu worldwide.

We started the year off with screenings at international film festivals in the United States. We then crossed the Atlantic to the UK, for screenings in Birmingham and London, flew to Australia for more screenings, and then back to the States to spread the Ubuntu message in the Northwest and now the East Coast.

Each time we received a notification that our film had been accepted into a film festival for a screening we jumped for joy! So far we have won 17 International Awards in different categories such as Best Short, Best Documentary, Best Music, and Best Narrative. We are bursting with pride and joy.

It’s amazing to be able to experience the power of film festivals in person. I’m most impressed with seeing films you can’t see anywhere else. Everything out at the theaters now is so Hollywood and so cheesy. The stories have no impact, meaning, or real value to me personally. Watching films with compelling stories of high value and connecting with other filmmakers who are also bringing about awareness and positive change energizes and excites me.

The feedback from the Port Angeles, WA screening was one of the most heart-warming we had received. After a lengthy Q&A session, many audience members stayed after the screening to find out how they could use their privilege to support the Ubuntu movement.

Ubuntu International, in partnership with the Charter for Compassion, presents The Ubuntu Project. This initiative includes an award-winning full-length documentary, a comprehensive guidebook, a short film titled "The Spirit of Ubuntu," a curriculum guide, and extensive resource materials.

Our first objective was to identify and make contact with various and diverse organizations practicing the principles of Ubuntu across the continent of Africa so we could document their unique ways of serving their local communities in a practical way.

Once we identified the organizations, Pato and Antoinette traveled to meet them. We had the privilege to get to know everyone in each organization. Being inquisitive to know anything, everything, and everybody, Antoinette ended up becoming the interviewer for the documentary. The conversations and spending reflective time together gave us an opportunity to know each other on a deeper level.

Once the documentary was completed, Pato created The Spirit of Ubuntu website to showcase the documentary and host the links of the featured organizations so people could learn more about them and support them.

The interactive spinning globe on the Spirit of Ubuntu website homepage symbolizes our goal: to grow the lights all around the planet, highlighting organizations practicing the Ubuntu philosophy. As the saying goes, "We are stronger together."

Imagine every spark of light, each organization practicing Ubuntu, coming together in the Spirit of Unity on the spinning globe. By uniting, we can make the world a better place. This is how we are growing the Ubuntu Family Network.

Ubuntu-{oǒ’boǒntoō|}is an ancient African word meaning ‘humanity to others’. It is often described as reminding us that ‘I am, because you are” or ‘I am, because WE are”. In a philosophical sense it promotes the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity”.

"Ubuntu" as a political philosophy encourages mutual support, community equity and socialization. (which should not be confused with socialism) The name also differs by country, such as in Angola (gimuntu), Botswana (muthu), Burundi (ubuntu), Cameroon (bato), Congo (bantu), Congo Democratic Republic (bomoto/bantu), Kenya (utu/munto/mondo), Malawi (umunthu), Mozambique (vumuntu), Namibia (omundu), Rwanda (ubuntu), South Africa (ubuntu/botho), Tanzania (utu/obuntu/bumuntu), Uganda (obuntu), Zambia (umunthu/ubuntu) and Zimbabwe (Ubuntu, unhu or hunhu). It is also found in other Bantu countries. The are different definitions in different regions, but they all point to one thing – “an authentic individual human being is part of a larger and more significant relational, communal, societal, environmental and spiritual world.”

In 2022, award-winning director Kudzai Tinago, renowned for his innovative storytelling and visually stunning cinematography, collaborated with Grammy-nominated reggae legend Pato Banton and Antoinette Rootsdawtah, a world-renowned keyboard player and composer known for her exceptional talent. Together, they embarked on a journey through ten countries across Africa, exploring the ancient philosophy of Ubuntu.

The purpose and destiny of this project is to present the meaning and values of Ubuntu across all regions of Africa and around the world. By creating a Video Documentary that focuses on the Social, Ethical, Moral and Universal aspects of Ubuntu and how it can be applied in practical life situations, will allow teachers and leaders the opportunity to share these valuable lessons with their respective communities and hopefully inspire the next generation to become enthusiastic activists to bring about more peace and global progress. Let’s bring the Spirit of Ubuntu to the world!

We’re building an UBUNTU global movement worldwide.

At the beginning of 2024, Ubuntu International submitted the completed documentary "The Spirit of Ubuntu" and the short film "The Baobab Tree Story" to the film festival circuit. To date, we have been selected for 25 film festivals and have won 12 international awards.

The Ubuntu World Tour, spearheaded by this inspirational couple, will facilitate the creation of an Ubuntu Network, a community of individuals and organizations committed to practicing and promoting Ubuntu principles. This network aims to sustain the movement’s impact beyond individual participants, ensuring that the spirit of Ubuntu continues to thrive and inspire communities worldwide.

UBUNTU {oǒ’boǒntoō|}

Origin:

The word Ubuntu comes from the Xhosa/Zulu culture, the community into which Nelson Mandela was born, and has been summarized in the phrase, "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" in the Nguni language of Xhosa, Zulu, or Ndebele. The concept of this phrase can be translated to mean, "A person is a person through other persons," or "I am because we are." In his explanation, Mandela touches upon the multi-faceted nature of Ubuntu, as well as the way one feels Ubuntu as an innate duty to support one's fellow man.

People should enrich themselves, meaning grow in their own Ubuntu, but true enrichment will naturally align with the duty to act towards the spiritual growth of one's community. Ubuntu is a spiritual ideal, a way of life that is conceptually represented in a wide range of sub-Saharan African societies. While Ubuntu exists in many variations within different African cultures and languages, each conceptualization retains the same core of meaning that is both a goal and a guide for humanity. In a philosophical sense, it promotes the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".
