UNCF announced The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity, a historic $12 million gift from The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation, which will strengthen the long-term sustainability of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Established as The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity within UNCF’s $1.5 billion capital campaign, the gift will provide permanent endowment capital to 12 selected UNCF-member institutions as part of their $5 million institutional match within UNCF’s pooled endowment fund. Recipient schools were selected for the strength of their leadership and governance and their proven record of preparing educators, nurses and other healthcare professionals. These are high-demand fields in which HBCUs consistently deliver outsized outcomes for first-generation and underrepresented students. A number of the selected schools also have distinctive cross-institutional collaborations including credit-transfer partnerships in health-related disciplines that shorten the distance between classroom and career launch, a national model for building talent pipelines at scale.

By growing endowments, The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity will help strengthen institutional balance sheets, expand capacity for long-range planning and secure research, academic and infrastructural capital.

Together, UNCF and The Dimon Foundation share a conviction that combating inequity requires more than access to quality post-secondary education. It requires durable institutions with the resources to ensure every student can succeed and ascend.

If you’re a student weighing your college options, or a parent helping your child decide, one question tops the list: Will my child belong here? At historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), the answer comes through loud and clear. A 2025 report found that 83% of HBCU students see themselves as part of their campus community, compared with 73% of college students nationally and 72% of Black students at predominantly white institutions (PWIs).

Belonging is not a feel-good extra. Research consistently shows that students who feel accepted, supported and connected to their campus community earn better grades, are more likely to stay enrolled and experience stronger mental health than peers who feel isolated.

For families, that is encouraging news. Success in college is not determined solely by academic ability. Feeling connected to classmates, faculty and the broader campus community can play a powerful role in helping students thrive, persist through challenges and ultimately walk across the stage at graduation.

What the 83% Number Actually Measures

Researchers surveyed more than 2,500 students across 16 HBCUs and two predominantly Black institutions (PBIs), and then compared the results with those from the national Healthy Minds Study.

Students earned that 83% by agreeing with a simple statement: “I see myself as part of the campus community.” The University of Michigan School of Public Health, which houses the Healthy Minds data, called the analysis one of the most thorough looks at HBCU student well-being to date.

The connection runs deeper than a single survey question. Sixty percent of these students said they have friends with whom they can share their thoughts and feelings. More than half pointed to a club or community where they truly fit.

Why Connection Drives Student Success

Belonging and achievement work together. Decades of education research link a strong sense of belonging to higher persistence, better grades and healthier minds. When students feel seen, they show up, ask for help and stick around through the hard semesters.

The HBCU data backs that up. According to the same UNCF report, 45% of HBCU students reported flourishing mental health—nine points higher than the 36% national average. They also reported lower anxiety, lower substance use and less risk of developing an eating disorder than their peers nationwide.

The Payoff Doesn’t Stop With Graduation

Gallup studied tens of thousands of graduates and found that HBCU graduates are more likely to thrive afterward, especially in financial and purpose-driven well-being. The Gallup findings show 40% of HBCU graduates are thriving financially, compared with 29% of Black graduates from other institutions. Gallup also found that HBCU graduates led 51% to 43% in well-being, the measure of whether people like what they do each day.

Brookings researchers point out that HBCUs reach these outcomes while serving many students from low-income families and operating with far fewer resources than wealthier universities. The schools do remarkable work with modest budgets.

How HBCUs Build That Connection

So what creates the bond? A few ingredients show up again and again.

• Shared culture and history: Students walk onto campuses built to affirm them, where faculty and classmates reflect their backgrounds and expect them to succeed.

• Mentorship that feels personal: Professors learn students’ names, track their progress and care about them as people, not just as ID numbers.

• Tight-knit traditions: Homecoming, Greek life, marching bands and tight alum networks turn classmates into lifelong family.

• A culture of high expectations: HBCUs treat excellence as the standard, and students rise to meet it.

How Families Can Navigate the College Choice

For parents and future students evaluating their options, look beyond generic rankings. Consider the following steps to evaluate a school’s capacity for connection:

• Look for mentorship opportunities: Ask admissions offices about student-to-faculty ratios and formalized peer-mentorship programs.

• Evaluate campus support systems: Investigate how the university prioritizes student mental health and well-being. High institutional trust reflects a school that genuinely listens to student needs.

• Visit during major campus events: Attending a homecoming or open house reveals the true spirit of the university community. Observe how alums, students and faculty interact.

The rebooted “A Different World”—premiering on Netflix on Sept. 24 as a 10-episode series—focuses on a new generation of students attending Hillman College, the fictional historically Black college (HBCU) featured in the TV show created by Felicia Pride, which originally ran for six seasons on NBC, from Sept. 24, 1987 to July 9, 1993.

The series was filmed at Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University, all UNCF-member institutions. About 59% of background performers were HBCU students or alumni, with roughly 32% of that group being Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC) students or graduates. An HBCU student council was brought in to consult on storylines. Additional HBCU students were also hired as production assistants on set.

One of Hillman College’s newest students is Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original series favorites Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.

That’s where spaced repetition comes in. Instead of studying a topic once, review it at increasing intervals over several days or weeks. According to researchers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, this approach strengthens long-term memory by reinforcing information just as it begins to fade. Whether you use flashcards, practice quizzes or a study app, spacing out your review sessions can help you remember more with less last-minute stress.

Master Time Management With Time Boxing

A four-hour study marathon may sound productive, but focus tends to fade after 30 to 40 minutes. Instead of pushing through mental fatigue, try breaking your work into shorter, structured sessions.

The Pomodoro technique is a popular approach: study for 25 minutes, take a five-minute break and repeat. After four cycles, take a longer break. It helps maintain concentration, reduces burnout and makes large assignments feel more manageable by turning them into a series of achievable goals.

Control Your Digital Environment

Multitasking may feel efficient, but research shows that constantly switching between studying and checking messages or social media reduces focus and productivity. The American Psychological Association notes that digital distractions can fragment attention, increase stress and hinder performance.

To stay focused, silence notifications, use website blockers or put your phone in another room. Creating a distraction-free environment helps you concentrate more deeply, making your study time more effective and efficient.

Pair Smart Study Habits With Strong Academic Support

As valuable as these study strategies are, students don’t have to navigate academic challenges alone. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have a long history of providing personalized support, mentorship, tutoring and academic success programs that help students build effective study habits and time-management skills. Through scholarships, student support initiatives and advocacy, UNCF also helps remove barriers that can distract students from their education and academic goals.

Success in college is not about spending every waking hour studying. It’s about using your time intentionally and making the most of the resources available to you. By combining smart study techniques with support from UNCF, students can improve their academic performance, reduce stress and make the most of their college experience.

UNCF today announces a major report, HBCUs Still Punching Above Their Weight, reaffirming that historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) continue to outperform expectations as engines of opportunity, enrolling and graduating students at rates that far exceed their share of higher education, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The report was released at the 2026 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention and career fair in Atlanta, GA.

Commissioned by UNCF’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute (FDPRI), the report provides a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the nation’s 101 HBCUs and their measurable, transformative contributions to the workforce, economy and future success of the United States.

UNCF’s previous analysis in 2019, HBCUs Punching Above Their Weight: A State-Level Analysis of Historically Black College and University Enrollment and Graduation, demonstrated that HBCUs consistently deliver outcomes far beyond what their institutional size and resources would predict. The latest edition reaffirms that reality with even greater clarity.

According to the report, while representing only a modest three percent of all higher education institutions in the U.S. and operating under historical inequities in funding and resources for improvements in infrastructure, HBCUs continually excel in delivering quality education in STEM.

In 2022, HBCUs accounted for 16 percent of STEM degrees conferred to Black graduates and 20 percent of Black women who earned STEM degrees came from HBCUs. HBCUs awarded 10 percent of Ph.D.’s in STEM overall. The 2022-2023 academic year was selected for this report, as it represented the most recent complete data set available from the National Center for Education Statistics Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

“HBCUs are not just participating in the future of American innovation, they are leading it,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF, and Lodriguez Murray, vice president, public policy and government affairs, UNCF, in a joint foreword statement in the report. “By expanding the opportunities for learning, creating, discovering and rising, HBCUs are redefining what is possible for our country. Their legacy is powerful, but their future impact will be even greater.”

HBCUs represent seven of the top eight institutions that graduate the highest number of Black undergraduate students who go on to earn doctorates in engineering and science, according to a 2020 report by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

According to UNCF’s latest report, while HBCUs make up nine percent of the four-year bachelor-degree granting institutions, they enrolled 23 percent of all Black undergraduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a college or university for the Fall 2022 semester and awarded 28 percent of STEM bachelor’s degrees earned by Black students.

With targeted policy action, HBCU’s impact would be even greater. In the report, UNCF recommends fully funding the Strengthening HBCU Program (Title III, Part B of the Higher Education Act); investing in HBCU infrastructure through the HBCU IGNITE legislation; and doubling the Pell Grant to no less than $13,000, ensuring the grants will once again cover a substantial share of college costs.

“As historically under-resourced institutions that often serve students and families who have also been historically under-resourced, HBCUs continue to outperform expectations and offer a return on investment that has been grossly underestimated,” said Dr. Walter Kimbrough, executive vice president of research, UNCF.

“UNCF calls for additional support for HBCUs as they continue to build out their capacity for STEM education. State, federal and philanthropic leaders must acknowledge that to meet the growing demand for highly skilled STEM professionals in this country,” Kimbrough said. “HBCUs are critical to our collective success. This report provides the data across a number of dimensions needed to say emphatically that HBCUs are still punching above their weight.”

I received an invitation to sit at what I jokingly call “the cool kids’ table.”

You know the one.

The table many of us spent our younger years hoping we’d be invited to. The one where feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt and intrusive thoughts quietly convince you that everyone else belongs there…except you.

Ironically, I was invited because of my work. Twenty-eight years as an educator. An award-winning veteran school counselor. Founder and CEO of HBC&U Legacies. College and career readiness lead. Adjunct professor. Years of building programs, creating pathways, advocating for students and yes…I have the receipts.

Yet, when I walked into UNCF UNITE, I still questioned whether I deserved a seat.

I came prepared to share the work my team and I have been doing to create intentional access to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). I was invited because of that work, but a small part of me still wondered if I was enough.

The truth is, I could have let those thoughts take over.

Instead, I made three intentional decisions that changed my entire conference experience.

First, I recentered myself.

I reminded myself that my voice served a greater purpose. I wasn’t there to prove I belonged. I was there to represent my students, my school, my city and nearly three decades of work dedicated to ensuring students have access to opportunities they may never have imagined for themselves.

Once I shifted my focus from myself to service, everything changed.

Second, I challenged myself to sit with someone new every day.

Each morning during the continental breakfast, I intentionally chose a different table and sat beside someone I had never met. Before sharing my own story, I listened to theirs. I wanted to know why they had been called into this work, what fueled their passion and how they were creating opportunities for students.

Those conversations reminded me that everyone in that room carried a purpose much greater than their title.

One conversation in particular will stay with me for a very long time.

A gentleman shared that although he served at a prominent HBCU, he sometimes struggled with feeling like he truly fit where he served. He explained that he had considered enrolling in additional courses—not because he needed another credential, but because he hoped it would quiet the feeling that somehow he wasn’t enough.

As I listened, I realized his story wasn’t just his story. It belonged to all of us. I paused and said, “I believe every one of us carries a layer of inadequacy somewhere within us. No matter our titles, accomplishments or years of experience, there is often a part of us that quietly questions whether we belong.”

Then I shared my own truth.

I told him that one of the greatest sources of my own self-doubt has been attending the University of Michigan, a predominantly White institution, for my undergraduate education. As someone whose parents both graduated from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), whose maternal great-grandparents were educated at Bishop College and whose life’s work has become advocating for HBCUs, I sometimes questioned whether I was “HBCU enough.”

For years, I wrestled with that. Then I realized something. My story doesn’t weaken my advocacy—it strengthens it.

Because my journey allows me to meet students exactly where they are. I understand what it means to make college decisions without fully understanding every option. My experience gives me an even greater responsibility to ensure every student has access to complete information and can make an informed decision.

Everyone deserves exposure to every pathway with the same enthusiasm. Because HBCU advocacy isn’t reserved for HBCU graduates—it belongs to all of us.

Everyone has a seat at this table.

Everyone has a responsibility to tell the story of HBCUs and ensure students understand that these institutions are pillars of academic excellence, culture, innovation, leadership and opportunity.

When I finished sharing, he thanked me. He told me that hearing my story helped him appreciate his own. As we stood to leave, he handed me his business card and said, “If there’s ever anything I can do, please reach out.” It reminded me that sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person isn’t advice—it’s permission to believe they are already enough.

Third, I decided to be fully present.

Not halfway present. Not observing from the sidelines. Fully engaged.

I asked questions. I participated in conversations. I accepted invitations. I immersed myself in every session, every meal, every hallway conversation and every opportunity to connect.

Most importantly, I remembered that I wasn’t speaking for myself alone. I was carrying the voices of students who deserve someone to advocate for them. Every conversation became another opportunity to create pathways for students from communities like mine.

By the end of the conference, I realized I wasn’t just present—I was immersed. Every session. Every meal. Every laugh. Every conversation.

Every new relationship was rooted in culture, history, excellence and possibility.

It was, without question, the Blackest professional conference I have ever attended. And I mean that as the highest compliment.

What made it so special wasn’t just who was in the room—it was the spirit of the room.

This was the only conference I’ve attended where no one’s title mattered, because everyone had one. Presidents. Chancellors. Deans. Vice Presidents. Admissions leaders. Faculty. Counselors. Enrollment professionals. Advocates.

Everyone brought expertise. Everyone brought influence. Yet no one led with their title—they led with purpose.

No one was trying to prove they belonged. No one was trying to outshine someone else.

Everyone came for the same reason: Community. Collaboration. Collective Impact.

The conversations weren’t centered on individual accomplishments—they were centered on student success. How do we remove barriers? How do we create bridges? How do we ensure more students know HBCUs are not simply an option, but institutions of excellence worthy of consideration?

That spirit of collaboration was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. There was no competition—only a shared commitment to changing lives.

Over just two days, I connected with representatives from nine different HBCUs. Each conversation created opportunities for future partnerships, stronger pipelines and meaningful collaborations that will ultimately benefit the students and families I serve.

But perhaps my greatest takeaway wasn’t measured by the number of connections I made. It was the people. I left with more than business cards—I left with relationships. I left with collaborators. I left with accountability partners. And I left with family.

Throughout the conference, I found myself welcomed by an incredible group of professionals representing Clark Atlanta University and Morgan State University. Somewhere between the sessions, the conversations and the laughter, they became my conference family. Wherever they went, I was invited to go too. We attended sessions together. Shared meals together. We explored Atlanta after hours because no UNCF UNITE Homecoming experience is complete without a stop at the 24-hour IHOP.

We laughed together. We learned together. It reminded me of what happens when children finally find their people on the playground. They don’t have to force their way into a group—they simply belong.

That’s what happened to me. I found my tribe.

This conference arrived exactly when I needed it.

As I enter a new season in my career and continue expanding the work of HBC&U Legacies, UNCF UNITE reminded me that my voice matters.

My perspective matters.

My experience matters.

My presence matters.

Looking back, I don’t think UNCF UNITE simply gave me a seat at the cool kids’ table. It reminded me that I’ve spent the last 28 years building tables where students can discover they belong. And somewhere between the shared stories, the new friendships and the unwavering commitment to student success, I realized something else: I was never trying to become one of the cool kids. I already belonged.

Now comes the greater responsibility. To keep building tables. To keep pulling up chairs. To keep creating pathways. To keep telling the story of HBCUs with the same passion and enthusiasm they deserve.

To ensure every student can make an informed decision—not because someone told them where to go, but because someone cared enough to show them every possibility. Because every student deserves the opportunity to discover their HBCU story. And every educator has a role in helping them find it.

Sending your child to college brings a mix of pride, excitement and financial anxiety. As tuition bills arrive, parents scramble to piece together savings, scholarships and student loans. In the chaos of moving boxes and campus tours, tax planning often falls by the wayside.

Many families leave thousands of dollars on the table every year simply because they don’t understand the education tax landscape. The Internal Revenue Service provides several hidden paths to lower a family’s tax liability during the college years, but navigating these rules requires careful review. Knowing which credits and deductions to claim can instantly ease the burden of higher education costs.

Claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit

The American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is one of the most valuable federal tax benefits for college expenses. Eligible parents can claim up to $2,500 per student each year during the first four years of college, for a potential savings of up to $10,000 per child.

There are income limits to qualify for the full credit. The credit reduces taxes dollar-for-dollar, and up to $1,000 may be refundable. Eligible expenses include tuition and enrollment fees as well as required books, supplies and equipment purchased through the school as a condition of enrollment or attendance.

Maximizing the Lifetime Learning Credit

Families who exceed the four-year limit for the AOTC, or who attend school part-time, can turn to the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). Unlike the AOTC, the government does not cap the number of years a taxpayer can claim the LLC.

Working parents pursuing their own professional advancement or continuing education can also claim the credit to offset tuition costs. Eligible coursework includes classes that students take to acquire or improve job skills. Income limits mirror the AOTC phase-out structures, which help middle-class families qualify.

The non-refundable credit can’t reduce a tax liability below zero. Taxpayers should coordinate their expenses to avoid double-dipping by claiming both the AOTC and the LLC for the same student in the same tax year. Choosing the right credit based on enrollment status and total expenses maximizes the annual tax refund.

Deducting Student Loan Interest

Many parents take out federal or private loans to bridge the gap between financial aid and total tuition costs. Paying off these loans feels burdensome, but the tax code offers a minor silver lining. The student loan interest deduction allows parents to deduct up to $2,500 of interest paid on qualified student loans each year.

The deduction operates as an above-the-line adjustment to income. Taxpayers can claim this deduction without itemizing their taxes, allowing individuals who use the standard deduction to reduce their adjusted gross income directly. Eligible loans must fund educational expenses for a dependent student who enrolls at least half-time in a degree program.

Parents must remain the primary obligors on the loan to claim the deduction. If a parent signs for the loan but the child makes the payments, neither party can claim the deduction. Clear communication about who legally owes and pays the debt protects this valuable annual write-off.

Activating the 529 Plan Roth IRA Rollover

For decades, parents worried that overfunding a 529 college savings plan would leave them with unused funds subject to taxes and penalties. However, the SECURE Act 2.0 now allows beneficiaries to roll unused 529 funds into a Roth IRA without paying taxes or penalties.

The lifetime rollover limit is $35,000 per beneficiary, giving young adults a valuable head start on retirement savings. To qualify, the 529 account must have been open for at least 15 years, and contributions made within the previous five years are ineligible. Annual rollovers must also stay within Roth IRA contribution limits.

With proper planning, families can use a 529 plan to support both education and long-term financial security.

Coordinating Financial Aid and Tax Strategies

Tax credits require careful synchronization with other forms of financial aid. Parents can’t use tax-free scholarships, Pell grants or 529 plan distributions to claim the AOTC or LLC. The IRS forbids double-dipping on the same educational dollar.

Filing taxes early and requesting Form 1098-T from the university billing office ensures accurate reporting. University systems often experience delays, so cross-referencing school financial portals with bank statements clarifies exact tuition payments. Consult a certified public accountant or use reputable tax software to optimize these overlapping benefits.

Making College More Affordable

The cost of college extends far beyond tuition, but smart tax planning can help families keep more of their hard-earned money. By taking advantage of education tax credits, student loan interest deductions and 529 plan benefits, parents can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and strengthen their long-term financial outlook.

These savings can be especially meaningful for families supporting students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), which continue to provide transformative educational opportunities and pathways to economic mobility. Organizations such as UNCF help make those opportunities more accessible through scholarships, advocacy and support for students attending HBCUs and other institutions.

When combined with scholarships, financial aid and careful planning, available tax benefits can help families make college more affordable and ensure that talented students have the resources they need to pursue their educational goals.

The Rust College Division of Science and Mathematics will host the Rust College Mathematics Camp on Friday and Saturday, August 21-22, 2026.

The two-day camp will introduce approximately 80 students ages 12-17 to advanced mathematical concepts through games, puzzles, interactive problem-solving and real-world applications. Sessions will be tailored primarily for middle and high school students from a variety of educational backgrounds. Age-appropriate programming for younger participants may also be offered if there is sufficient demand.

Rust College’s German and Japanese partners will also participate, bringing an international perspective and additional educational enrichment to the two-day experience.

Camp sessions will generally last between 60 and 90 minutes and will extend beyond the traditional classroom model. Students will explore advanced- and graduate-level mathematical concepts in creative and accessible ways while discovering connections between mathematics, their classroom studies and real-world situations.

Rust’s Math Camp represents another innovative initiative of the Division of Science and Mathematics, under the leadership of Dean Dr. Cadavious Jones.

Providing dental care to underserved communities drives Bao Pham, a first-generation student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) in Boston. Thanks to the Fidelity Scholars Program, administered by UNCF, Pham is a freshman majoring in dental hygiene and preparing for a career as a dental hygienist.

Pham, an international student from Vietnam, was worried about how he could afford a college education in the U.S. But with Fidelity Scholars and UNCF’s support, he was able to ease the financial burden. He learned that when you pursue college in another country, stability—especially financial stability—is the number one priority.

“When I was new to the U.S., I was worried about how I could afford college,” said Pham. “UNCF helped open doors for me—not only financially, but also by giving me encouragement and support. If you have a dream, this program is worth applying for.”

The Fidelity Scholars Program is a renewable need-based scholarship that provides financial support, mentoring, college coaching and mental health resources for students pursuing a four-year degree. Wraparound services from the program provide professional and personal support for first-generation students, helping them to thrive in college.

“UNCF provided access to academic resources like Upswing tutoring, which has been really meaningful for me—having tutors who are patient and supportive has helped me succeed in challenging foundation courses,” said Pham.

The additional resources provided by the Fidelity Scholars Program helped him succeed in demanding first-year courses. Without the need to work long hours to cover tuition, he was able to devote additional time to studying. “I’ve been able to focus more on learning instead of constantly worrying about finances or needing to work many hours,” he said. “It has helped me stay motivated, confident and committed to finishing my program.”

Pham was inspired by his mom who’s a dental assistant. He knew that MCPHS was the right choice because of its strong health and sciences program and resources. “I liked being in Boston, where there are many opportunities in healthcare and community service,” he said. “MCPHS felt like the right place for me to grow academically and professionally.”

One of Pham’s most memorable experiences on campus was being able to help his classmates in a challenging course. “I helped my classmates understand basic chemistry.” he explained. “I enjoyed breaking down difficult topics step-by-step, and it made me happy to see my friends feel more confident and improve.”

After graduation, Pham plans to work as a dental hygienist in a hospital or a dental office. He wants to help people in underserved communities, including the Vietnamese community, and plans to become a dental hygiene professor to continue giving back.

Pham is grateful for the donors of the Fidelity Scholars Program and UNCF. Without this program, he said he wouldn’t be in college. “I honestly think I might not have been able to start college, or I might have had to stop school and work full-time very early,” he said. “Thank you for the Fidelity Scholars Program and UNCF for believing in students like me and helping make my goal possible.”

Livingstone College, a UNCF-member institution, has welcomed its largest ever freshman class.

Livingstone College—one of the nation’s fastest-rising private historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)—has seen a more than 70% increase in enrollment over the last four years. On July 18, 2026, the fifth cohort of interns from UNCF’s Lighted Pathways Program enjoyed a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard to meet with leaders who have paved paths in industries like asset management, finance, healthcare, real estate, education, nonprofits and more. The interns attended a luncheon, hosted by Ronald L. Walker, II (founder and CEO, The Walker Group Strategic Consultants) and his wife Shawnda at their home in Vineyard Haven, which provided a special opportunity for them to connect with prominent Boston industry leaders.

During the lunch, catered by Boston’s own Punky’s Kitchen and Catering, interns had the unique opportunity to share their journeys and career aspirations with leaders who have broken barriers across several industries, including: Dr. James Cash, the first Black tenured professor at the Harvard Business School and first Black basketball player in the Southwest Conference at Texas Christian University; Petrina Martin Cherry, vice president, Community Engagement and External Affairs, Boston Medical Center Health System, and the chair of the program committee; Phillip Clay, a senior administrator at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, chair of the board of The Community Builders, Inc., and a member on several foundation and nonprofit boards; Deborah Jackson, lead director, Eastern Bank and former president of Cambridge College; and Omar L. Simmons, president, Exaltare Capital Management, and a member of the board of ECP-PF (Planet Fitness), EVG (Urban Air), ECM-GF (The Good Feet Store), InXpress Global and the International Franchise Association. These giants—upon whose shoulders the Lighted Pathways interns stand—shared valuable words of wisdom and insight that students will carry with them as they launch their careers in Boston and beyond.

Walker, a proud alumnus of Prairie View A&M University, the oldest public historically Black college and university (HBCU) in Texas, is a longtime pioneer in banking, private equity and workforce strategy. He has been an instrumental champion for expanding career access and driving institutional investment in diverse talent across New England.

UNCF’s Institute for Capacity Building (ICB) recognized 11 outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to the HBCU community during UNITE 2026 held July 17-23. The honorees were saluted during an awards ceremony, held as part of UNITE 2026, the largest national convening of HBCU leaders, faculty, students, advocates and funders. The awards honored achievement across institutional excellence, faculty leadership, innovation, advocacy, organizational transformation and community impact.

“These honorees represent the very best of what our institutions can achieve when vision, leadership and unwavering commitment come together,” said Dr. Walter Kimbrough, executive vice president for research and member engagement, UNCF. “Their work strengthens not just their own campuses, but the entire HBCU community and the students who depend on us.”

Institutional Excellence Award: Xavier University of Louisiana

The Institutional Excellence Award recognizes an HBCU that has distinguished itself through a legacy of academic excellence, transformative innovation and an unwavering commitment to student success. This year’s recipient, Xavier University of Louisiana, is the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic university and has long been recognized for preparing visionary leaders in medicine, STEM, education, public service and beyond.

The 2026 UNITE Impact Partner Award honored The Kresge Foundation and Bill Moses for their extraordinary leadership and enduring commitment to advancing HBCUs through philanthropy, partnership and innovation. As managing director of the education program at The Kresge Foundation, Moses has led strategic investments that have expanded access to higher education, supported institutional transformation and fostered innovative solutions to improve student success. A steadfast advocate for HBCUs, Moses has worked alongside institutional leaders, philanthropic organizations, policymakers and community partners to elevate the national profile of HBCUs and expand opportunities for their long-term growth and sustainability. Kresge Foundation was also acknowledged for their catalytic role as one of the founding funders of UNCF’s Institute for Capacity Building.

When Chris Arocha imagines his future, he sees himself performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, whether with the Boston Symphony Orchestra or the United States Marine Band. The Huston-Tillotson University (a UNCF-member institution) undergraduate student is determined to turn his passion for music into a lifelong career.

His dream has been made more attainable thanks to the support of UNCF. Archoa received three UNCF scholarships—the Michael Jackson scholarship, Coco-Cola Scholarship and John Lennon Endowed Scholarship.

“UNCF has helped me tremendously,” Arocha said. “The money awarded to me has definitely helped me in my pursuit of academic greatness and relieved the financial burden of going to school.”

Support UNCF scholarships

The music performance major at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, TX, understands that pursuing a career in the arts requires both dedication and opportunity. Receiving scholarship support from UNCF has allowed Arocha to focus on developing his craft while continuing to excel in the classroom.

His hard work has paid off. Despite a demanding academic schedule, Arocha recently earned a place on the dean’s list for the second consecutive year—an accomplishment that he said makes him especially proud. “I’ve been locked in with my academics,” he shared. “I am proud of myself for getting the dean’s list award two years in a row.”

Choosing to attend Huston-Tillotson University was a practical decision that quickly became much more. “What drew me to Huston-Tillotson University was the affordability and the location within my hometown of Austin, TX,” he said.

The university has provided more than an education—it has created opportunities for Arocha to perform, travel and grow as a musician. “My most memorable moment was being in Norfolk, VA, with the jazz band and watching my friends compete in a jazz competition,” he said.

Arocha plans to travel to Poland with the university, where he will study and perform in a country deeply connected to the history of music. “Classical music was born in Europe,” he said. “Fun fact—Frédéric Chopin was born in Poland.”

Every milestone carries added meaning because Arocha is creating a new legacy for his family. As a first-generation college student, he is accomplishing something his parents never had the opportunity to do. “My parents have not graduated [from] high school,” he said. “For them, I am making them super proud by going to a university.”

With an expected graduation date of 2028, Arocha remains focused on achieving his goals. His message to the donors who invest in students like him is simple and heartfelt. “I am truly appreciative and I love UNCF for basically funding my degree,” he said.

Stories like Arocha’s illustrate the transformative power of educational opportunity. Through the generosity of donors, UNCF continues to remove financial barriers, empower talented students and help them pursue ambitious dreams.
