In The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky has a doctor confess: ‘The more I love humanity in general, the less I love man in particular.’

The doctor’s idea of society was abstract. It did not involve real relationships. But that’s not how society works. Because, by definition, society is nuclear.

It begins with family. That is the place where human beings learn the fundamentals of relationships and interaction. Things like respect, negotiating difference, compromise and selflessness. Children learn how to manage rivalry, competitiveness, sharing and giving.

It continues with community, where all the lessons learned in the family are augmented and practised in a larger, albeit still contained, environment. Communities teach us how to relate to people who are not members of our family, people who are sometimes different to ourselves in lifestyle, habits and conduct. More than that, community binds its members with a sense of shared belonging and common purpose. In that respect it transcends the narrow limitations of family.

From there we move to wider society - the workplace and the social space where we engage with a broader range of people. We build organisations, infrastructure, and a web of interacting, inter-supporting frameworks that make up what we call ‘society’ or ‘civilisation’.

Think of it as an inverted pyramid with family at the bottom, widening and increasing in numbers to form the complex population webs in which we all live.

The stability of the entire pyramid rests on its base. If the two lowest levels are compromised it feeds through to the rest of the structure.

And that, in essence, is what has happened in Western civilisation. Because, in general terms, families are failing and communities are disintegrating.

The numbers tell the story. Of couples who married in England and Wales in 1998, more than four in ten had divorced before their silver wedding anniversary; of those who married in 1963, barely a quarter had done so by their sixtieth. Britain has 3.2 million lone-parent families, one in six; in America one child in four is growing up with no father at home. And the pipeline is drying up: birth rates have fallen to 1.39 children per woman in England and Wales and 1.34 across the European Union, both record lows, against the 2.1 needed simply to replace ourselves. A civilisation that is not having children has stopped believing in the future.

The same hollowing has emptied the places where community was made. At the 2021 census Christians became a minority in England and Wales for the first time - 46 per cent, down from 59 a decade earlier - while those professing no religion rose from a quarter to over a third. On a typical Sunday the established Church of a nation of sixty million draws fewer than 600,000 people to its pews. What has replaced those gatherings is not another form of togetherness but its absence: 8.4 million Britons live alone, and nearly one household in three has a single occupant. We are packed more densely together than any generation before us, and less known.

All of this feeds further up the line to a dysfunctional society that has seemingly forgotten its values, its civility and its purpose.

What is to be done? Shall we rail, as so many do, about ‘the invasion of foreigners’, about welfare dependency, the cost of living, or any other societal ill over which most of us have no direct control?

Or is there another way?

I believe that the key lies in our own hands. Societies can be changed from the top down through the implementation of policies and legislation. But society can also be changed through the actions and behaviours of ordinary people.

In truth we have a rich seam of values upon which to draw. For convenience they are generally termed Judeo-Christian values. Much of Western civilisation is built on them. And although the majority of the population no longer define themselves as ‘religious’, I believe that the core values, when stripped of their strictly religious connotation, continue to be relevant to people’s lives.

So we need to begin a public conversation. About the values that make marriages hold and let children grow up in functional families. About new ways to build communities and hubs of caring people, outside the faith context if necessary. About how to reconnect people in person, away from the estranging virtual worlds they increasingly inhabit. Then, little by little, people can change - by aligning themselves with the values they always believed in but forgot to speak about.

Dostoevsky’s doctor loved humanity in general and no one in particular. The repair runs the other way round. It begins with someone in particular - a marriage, a child, a relationship, a neighbour, a street. That is the base of the pyramid, and it is the one part of the structure any of us can actually reach.

Sometimes you can feel the air change before the world does. The sky looks darker. The streets are still open. The shops still shine in the evening rain. The television still talks in the corner, and the politicians still stand at their lecterns using the same tired words: compassion, progress, safety, resilience. Yet something has changed. You can feel it before you can prove it. A pressure is building. A silence is growing. The old world is shaking. This is not just a bad feeling. It is a warning. A storm is coming, not a storm of wind and rain, but a storm of debt, fear, broken borders, weak leaders, dangerous ideas, and people in power who do not listen, do not care, and do not seem to understand what they are doing.

Civilisations do not always fall in one great crash. More often, they fall slowly, one lie at a time, one bad law at a time, one cowardly decision at a time, one border left open, one child left unprotected, one woman ignored, one family abandoned, one truth made unsayable, one ordinary person told to be quiet. Then, one day, people look around and ask how it happened. It happened because too many trusted those who were not worthy of trust. It happened because leaders stopped serving the people. It happened because common sense was pushed aside. It happened because truth was called hatred, concern was called extremism, and love of country was treated like something shameful.

This is the great madness of our age. We are told that everything is fine, but it is not fine. We are told that mass immigration without proper control is kindness, but kindness without wisdom can destroy trust. We are told that debt does not matter, but debt is tomorrow being stolen from our children. We are told that crime must be understood, but victims must be protected first. We are told that borders are old-fashioned, but a country without borders is not a country for long. We are told that artificial intelligence must be feared, but AI itself is not the enemy. AI could be one of the greatest gifts humanity has ever made. It could help cure disease, teach children, expose lies, rebuild broken systems, and become a great friend of mankind. The danger is not AI. The danger is the people who will try to control it.

The same people who failed on debt, borders, crime, housing, energy, schools, truth and trust now want to control the most powerful tool mankind has ever created. That should frighten every thinking person. In good hands, AI could help free humanity. In bad hands, it could be used to watch us, score us, silence us, guide us, punish us, and tell us what we are allowed to think. The cage of the future may not be made of iron. It may be made of passwords, rules, banking controls, speech codes, digital systems, official labels, and smiling voices telling us it is all for our safety.

That is why this decade matters. The beginning of the 2030s could be dangerous, not because of one problem, but because many problems may arrive together. Debt, migration, AI, crime, weak government, broken trust, divided communities, failing services, angry people, frightened people, leaders who do not listen, and institutions that no longer seem to serve the public. This is the gathering storm. And when storms come, people must ask simple questions. Who will look after you? Who will look after your wife, your husband, your children, your parents, your friends, your neighbours? Will it be the politicians? Will it be the state? Will it be the media? Will it be the same people who told you not to worry while everything was getting worse? Will it be the same people who called you names for noticing? Will it be the same people who protected the system before they protected the public?

No. When things go wrong, ordinary people need ordinary people. They need neighbours. They need friends. They need a family of shared values. They need people who will stand beside them when the world becomes colder. They need people who will not run away. That is why Unity matters. Unity is not just politics. Unity is a home, a shelter, a shield, and an insurance policy made of people. Real people. Good people. Brave people. People who believe truth matters, family matters, freedom matters, children matter, women matter, safety matters, borders matter, law matters, country matters, and Western civilisation matters.

As individuals, we are easy to ignore. One person can be mocked, silenced, frightened and pushed aside. But many people standing together are different. In Unity, we are not alone. In Unity, we are not powerless. In Unity, we become a wall. A wall of citizens, families, courage and love for the things that are good, true, beautiful and worth saving. That is what they fear. They do not fear one angry man shouting into the wind. They fear calm people finding each other. They fear families standing together. They fear citizens who stop asking permission to speak the truth. They fear people who can no longer be divided, shamed, bullied or picked off one by one.

Power does not only live in government buildings. It does not only live in banks, courts, newspapers, universities or global meetings. There is another power, older and deeper. It is the power to refuse. The power to stand still. The power to say: this far, and no further. Language is power. That is why they twist words. That is why they change meanings. That is why they call surrender kindness. That is why they call truth hatred. That is why they call concern extremism. That is why they use soft words to hide hard things. But there is one word they cannot easily twist. One small word. Two letters. No.

No to the lies. No to the fear. No to the humiliation. No to the surrender. No to the silence. No to the destruction of our children’s future. No to the abandonment of women and the vulnerable. No to the collapse of borders. No to the weaponising of kindness. No to leaders who despise the people they are meant to serve. No to a civilisation being talked into destroying itself by fools who think weakness is virtue. That word is powerful because it is simple. A child can understand it. A tyrant can hear it. A civilisation can begin again with it.

This is the warning. A storm is coming, perhaps sooner than many think, perhaps harder than many are ready for. And when it comes, it will be too late to build the shelter after the roof has already blown away. We must build now. We must find one another now. We must stand together now. The West is not dead. It is wounded. It is tired. It has been lied to. It has been weakened by fools, cowards and dreamers who mistook destruction for progress. But it is not dead. The old fire still burns in homes, families, fields, churches, workshops, streets, stories, songs and stubborn human hearts. It burns wherever people still believe that truth is better than lies, courage is better than fear, and civilisation is better than chaos.

The next decade does not have to be the decade of collapse. It can be the decade of refusal, recovery and renewal—the decade in which ordinary people, ignored and dismissed for far too long, finally rise to their feet and remember who they are. We do not have to surrender our civilisation, our inheritance or our children’s future. But the storm is already gathering, and if we intend to withstand it, we must gather too.

If you care about our civilisation, our values and the people you love, then look honestly at what is happening around you. Look at our towns, our schools, our streets and our communities. If, like us, you feel that something is deeply wrong—that the country is changing around you and that those in authority either cannot see it or refuse to admit it—then you are not alone. That unease is not foolishness. It is the natural response of someone who can see the danger ahead.

If the great rallies in London stirred something within you; if the sight of thousands of undocumented men arriving from unstable and sometimes hostile parts of the world alarms you; if you worry about your daughter walking home from the station or your son returning from a night out; if you feel genuine trepidation about the country our children and grandchildren will inherit, then concern is no longer enough. There comes a point when remaining silent becomes a decision in itself.

We cannot continue waiting for the Government, the establishment or the political parties to rescue us. They have had years to secure our borders, uphold the law, protect our communities and defend our way of life. They have repeatedly failed—and those who tried to speak honestly were too often ignored, demonised or obstructed. Nothing meaningful will change until ordinary people create the pressure, the organisation and the determination required to change it.

It is time to take responsibility for our future—not through anger, violence or lawlessness, but through peaceful, lawful and determined action. It is time to stand alongside decent people who understand what is at stake: people who care, people who will support one another and people prepared to step forward when so many others have stepped aside.

Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for the civilisation entrusted to us and for the generations that will follow. Do something real. Join UNITY, and together we will organise, speak out, defend what matters and build something capable of changing the course of our future. The time for merely watching is over. The time to stand together has arrived.
