While Meta pays for its own central compute hub, taxpayer dollars are secretly financing the last-mile hardware that anchors the sensory grid to private land.

I closed by asking him directly why he is using data centers as a noisy distraction while using “rural internet” as a Trojan Horse to trick Albertans into signing away perpetual physical access to their private land.

Let’s be clear here why they want access to your private land

Let’s be honest for a second, most of us pay no attention to politics and those of us that do… pay way too much attention to national politics. It makes sense because Federal politics is loud, theatrical, and built for television…

Meanwhile, at 7:00 PM on a rainy Tuesday, your local city council voted on a set of administrative bylaws that will impact your water, your property, and your private data far more than any federal soundbite ever will.

We like to think that local government is where the real democracy happens, where you can walk into city hall, look your mayor in the eye, and ask why your potholes aren’t being filled. But if you’ve been paying attention to what’s quietly playing out across the country (and specifically right here in Alberta), a very different picture is starting to emerge.

It turns out, the “local” in local governance is being systematically erased.

Time for a reality check, while we were arguing about national headlines, the administrative guardrails protecting our communities were being quietly dismantled from the inside out.

If you look at recent policy moves in isolation, they just look like boring, dry administrative updates. (And let’s be real, the people writing them count on you finding them boring so you won’t read them). But when you stack the evidence together, the pattern becomes impossible to ignore.

1. The Water Grab: The independent Alberta Water Council, a public board that protected community water rights for over two decades, was dissolved.1 Right alongside that, Bill 7 (The Water Amendment Act) was introduced, consolidating water licensing and inter-basin transfers under ministerial discretion. Local municipal oversight? Stripped away. Bill 7 isn't just a technical update to water laws, it's a centralization maneuver. By replacing full legislative debates with Ministerial Orders, removing return flow obligations, and creating massive new super-basins, the province is taking water oversight out of public view and placing it directly into administrative hands2

2. The Quiet Data Merge: I know this is not your local council but it is too big to overlook… Look closely at your driver’s licence. The province quietly rolled out new identification pipelines, mandatory display of Personal Health Numbers (PHNs) and citizenship markers directly on driver’s licences. At the exact same time, Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner publicly raised the alarm, warning that the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, the central agency handling these merged data streams, is not subject to provincial privacy laws.3

3. The Ultimate Administrative Hammer (Bill 20): Enter the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act. Under Bill 20, provincial Cabinet gave itself the power to bypass traditional judicial processes to remove locally elected councillors under a vague “public interest” mandate. Even worse? Cabinet can now unilaterally step in and strike down local bylaws if they don’t align with provincial direction.

The councillors are given the illusion of choice, the public is given the illusion of a vote, and if anyone on the council dares to go off-script? Bill 20 sits in the corner like an administrative bouncer ready to show them the door.

With the announcement of Meta’s $13-billion, 1-gigawatt AI campus in Sturgeon County, paired with a dedicated $4.6-billion natural gas plant, Albertans are being told this is a historic leap forward. But an investigation into similar facilities across North America shows that the reality on the ground looks vastly different from the corporate press releases.

Smith is excited to lay claim to the “Bring Your Own Power” strategy yet in Texas, project Stargate made headlines for installing dozens of gas turbines and diesel generators to run an off-grid power plant capable of burning as much energy as a city of one million homes.

In Sturgeon County, Meta’s campus will draw 1 gigawatt …enough to power roughly 800,000 homes. To feed it, Pembina Pipeline and Capital Power are building the Greenlight Electricity Centre, a massive gas-fired power plant. But because the power plant won’t be fully operational until late 2030, Meta plans to rely initially on Alberta’s provincial electricity grid. At a time when Albertans are already paying high utility bills and facing grid reliability alerts during extreme weather, dumping a massive industrial load onto the public grid puts local ratepayers at risk.

The hidden hand that Fast-Tracked Permits and Zero Public Consent … the permit by rule… seems they had a playbook.

This entire process depends on creating a cognitive dissonance loop in the public mind.

They all talk in numbers the average Jane and John Doe can’t comprehend, making it all sound like the province will prosper…truth is the stakeholder ( that is NOT you and me) certainly will. Then listen to Danielle Smith tell us these facilities are being built so you can store your family vacation photos, send WhatsApp messages, or scroll through Instagram. They tell us it's about "rural broadband" and "connecting the North."

It is a brilliant PR stunt, a coordinated distraction…AND IT IS ALL FALSE!!!

Good thing they are all wearing knee high boots… somewhere under all the Bulls*#it the truth is buried.

And do you really think Meta is investing billions so you can share your photos. Think again…The entire “family photos” story is designed as a psychological anchor. AI data centres are built for something entirely different from the traditional data centre, they are feeding the insatiable appetite of artificial intelligence for computing power. That's not a minor technical detail … it's the whole point.

They sure are not being built primarily so you can binge-watch another season of your favourite show. It is specialized infrastructure designed to provide the massive computational power required to train and operate artificial intelligence systems. Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the company expects to spend at least $600 billion on U.S. data centers and related infrastructure by 2028. The commitment underscores how leading U.S. tech firms are accelerating spending to secure AI capacity, with Meta already targeting the deployment of more than one million GPUs to support its next-generation AI models.

To put that in perspective $600 billion is more than the GDP of most developed nations. They are locking down raw, dispatchable fossil-fuel power years in advance because their global multi-hundred-billion-dollar buildout is entirely bottlenecked by physical electricity. Nate Glubish and others have repeatedly said they had to rewrite policies to make the glove fit…When governments boast about “cutting red tape” or “rewriting regulations” to move at the speed of Big Tech, they are rarely creating efficiency out of thin air. Instead, they are systematically shifting risk, cost, and legal protections away from the public and handing them over to private corporations.

Mark Zuckerberg has publicly confirmed Meta is exploring an AI cloud business, saying selling compute “makes sense”, putting his name to the earlier-reported “Meta Compute” plan. The point is Albertans deserve to see the complete roadmap.

If this project is truly “the first of many,” then show us where “many” leads. Show us how broadband, AI, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data centres, and digital government fit together. Explain the long-term vision, the risks, the trade-offs, and the safeguards.

Trust isn’t built through slogans. It is built through transparency.

And until that transparency exists, Albertans should continue asking questions, not because we fear the future, but because we have a right to understand the one that is being built in our name.

Listening to yesterday’s 23-minute press conference announcing Meta’s $13 billion AI data centre, I couldn’t help but think: Where is Noam Chomsky when you need him? Because if ever there was a press conference that deserved a linguistic analysis, this was it.

Political Theatre comes to mind, with the stage set amid the corporate backdrop of the Calgary Stampede, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Ministers, Sturgeon County Mayor and tech giant Meta announced a landmark $13-billion artificial intelligence data center in Sturgeon County.

As Noam Chomsky famously observed in Manufacturing Consent, the primary function of political and corporate language is not to inform, but to filter the truth through a specific ideological lens. By looking closely at the words chosen, the phrases repeated, and the hard data deliberately omitted, a clear pattern of public deception emerges.

So lets contrast yesterday's press release with the federal scientific records buried in the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) registry, and we quickly see the carefully crafted green narrative collapse.

Throughout the press release Smith and others used sanitizing terminology like “bring your own power”, The phrase “bring your own power” sounds like a polite invitation to a local event. What it actually describes is a 932-megawatt, natural gas-fired industrial power plant operated by a private consortium.

While the public was told that Meta is protecting grid reliability, the organizers omitted the broader macro-environmental cost. According to leaked federal documents when fully realized, this gas-dependent infrastructure will generate an estimated 20 million tonnes of CO2 annually. By labeling a massive new fossil-fuel anchor as a self-sustaining benefit, the province successfully reframed a severe long-term emissions liability as public infrastructure relief.

ASK YOURSELF, WHAT HAS CHANGED? To fully understand the linguistic manipulation at play, one must look at how the exact same fossil-fuel resource is framed depending on who is burning it. For years, the public has been bombarded with a narrative that demands carbon taxes, energy conservation, and multi-billion-dollar taxpayer subsidies for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to mitigate the “climate crisis.” In that context, natural gas is treated as a legacy liability that must be scrubbed, captured, or taxed out of existence.

Yet, at yesterday’s press conference, that same natural gas was transformed into a clean, modern virtue. By renaming a 932 MW gas-fired generation plant as the “Greenlight Electricity Centre,” the province and Meta executed a profound psychological pivot.

This is the ultimate corporate double-standard: when an everyday citizen heats their home or turns on their lights, the emissions are a problem that requires federal taxation and public sacrifice. But when a multi-billion-dollar tech conglomerate burns the exact same gas to fuel automated artificial intelligence clusters, it is heralded as “environmental stewardship” and an economic victory. The carbon dioxide doesn’t change, the atmospheric impact doesn’t change, and the respiratory hazards flagged by Health Canada don’t vanish.

While we are on Health Canada … The most telling aspect of any corporate media rollout is what remains unsaid. During the press conference, the public was reassured that the facility would be safely situated within the Industrial Heartland, explicitly noting the land is “not used for farming, residential housing or food production”. What is left out is the entire area was farmland before it was bought up and rezoned, there are farms all around the area, food production, and a town of about 3500 a mere 7 km to the West. The city of Fort Saskatchewan about 9 km away and according to Health Canada a resident whose porch is a mere 200 meters away. In its Federal Authority Advice Record (FAAR), Health Canada raised significant concerns regarding the facility's proximity to local populations. Furthermore, Health Canada noted that the project’s initial documents indicated maximum predicted concentrations of fine particulate matter may exceed Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives and Guidelines. Yet, Health Canada observed that the proponent failed to include any assessment of acute or chronic exposure for actual human receptors living nearby.

Noam, I am sure would have jumped all over that one…human receptor? When Meta wants our natural gas, they call us “valued partners.” But in the regulatory documents, they don’t expect you to ever see, the people of Gibbons and neighboring farms are reduced to “human receptors”, treated as nothing more than biological sponges meant to absorb fine particulate matter and industrial noise right on their own doorsteps.

It is much easier for a regulatory board or a corporate board room to approve an extraction or pollution permit when they are evaluating impacts on a "receptor" rather than a living, breathing human being who will experience sleeplessness from low-frequency noise or respiratory strain from particulate matter.

We need to stop using their corporate vocabulary and start reminding people that these “receptors” are actual human families.

Perhaps the most revealing statement in the entire 23 minutes was when Minister Nate Glubish stated, “It did not happen by accident. It happened by design.”

Read that again.

“It happened by design.”

For months Albertans have debated AI data centres as though companies simply decided Alberta was an attractive place to invest. The Minister made it clear that this project was the result of a deliberate government strategy. He went on to explain that two years ago he was given a mandate to create a plan, build a concierge service, and, in his own words, “get out there and sell Alberta.”

Well Mr Glubish just happens to be the man behind Alberta Broadband Strategy 2022 as well.

The interview below isn’t about AI data centres or broadband specifically. It’s about alleged corporate influence over antitrust enforcement in the United States. But the pattern it describes raises a much bigger question:

What happens when governments and major corporations begin moving in lockstep on projects worth hundreds of billions of dollars?

Today, governments around the world are investing unprecedented sums in AI infrastructure, broadband networks, transmission lines, energy corridors, and digital connectivity. We’re told it’s about faster internet, economic growth, innovation, and competitiveness. Those may well be among the goals. But as citizens, we also have a responsibility to ask tougher questions.

Who is driving these decisions? Who benefits financially? Who owns the infrastructure once it’s built? Who sets the rules? And who is left holding the bill?

AND most importantly…Who controls the systems that increasingly shape our day-to-day lives?

As many of you know, I’ve been digging into Alberta’s AI data centre expansion and Sturgeon County’s publicly funded broadband project. The more documents I read, the more convinced I become that we need to understand not just the technology, but the governance behind it.

If regulatory capture is occurring on the scale alleged in this interview, then it isn’t simply a competition issue. It becomes a question of democratic accountability. Before we spend billions of taxpayer dollars transforming our physical and digital infrastructure, Canadians deserve transparency, meaningful public debate, and confidence that these decisions are being made in the public interest … not simply in the interests of those with the greatest financial or political influence.

Thousands of rural Canadians may soon receive a letter much like the one I received…

At first glance, it looks routine. A municipality is offering to bring fibre optic internet to your property at no installation cost. The deadline has even been extended to August 1, 2026. And they are “pleased” to announce I can still get in on it.

Many people will sign without giving it a second thought. I almost did…but something was nagging at me so I read the documents.

Not just the letter. Not just the Access Agreement. But also the referenced, Government of Canada’s Rural Economic Development Strategy and the National Connectivity Strategy.

That’s when I realized this isn’t simply about faster internet.

It is about building a permanent communications backbone that the Government itself describes as supporting economic development, public safety, digital government, connected technology, artificial intelligence, Smart Cities, and the digital economy.

Before you dismiss that statement, don’t take my word for it.

Read their own documents.

Then ask yourself one simple question:

If this infrastructure is intended to become the foundation of Canada’s digital future, shouldn’t Canadians understand exactly what they’re signing?

If you live in Sturgeon County, you’ve probably seen the crews.

Hydrovacs. Dozers. Directional drills. Surveyors. Contractors. Fibre cable disappearing beneath roads and across farmland.

Most people barely notice.

“It’s just better internet.”

But what if that’s only part of the story?

Here’s the question nobody seems to be asking:

Why are governments across Canada spending billions of dollars to install fibre optic infrastructure to virtually every community, every industrial park, and increasingly every rural property?

The federal government has committed billions of dollars through its national broadband strategy with the goal of connecting nearly every Canadian by 2030.

Sturgeon County is simply one project among hundreds.

So ask yourself...

Why now? Why this fast? Why everywhere? Why everyone?

Because fibre optic cable isn’t just about watching Netflix.

It is the digital highway of the twenty-first century.

Once installed, that highway can carry almost anything:

• Internet

• Telephone

• Emergency communications

• Utility monitoring

• Municipal operations

• Traffic management

• Industrial automation

• Environmental sensors

• Connected infrastructure

• And technologies that may not even exist yet.

The cable itself is neutral. The real question is not what fibre is.

The real question is:

What systems will eventually ride on top of it?

That is why the Access Agreement being presented to Sturgeon County landowners deserves far more attention than it has received.

Buried inside are provisions granting ongoing access to private property, allowing County-owned communications infrastructure to remain on the land indefinitely, with rights to inspect, maintain, replace, and upgrade equipment over time.

This is no longer simply an internet subscription, in fact NO internet provider is even signed on yet!

It is permanent infrastructure. Whether you welcome that or question it, one fact should concern every Canadian: Very few people have stopped to ask what Canada’s digital infrastructure will look like ten, twenty, or thirty years from now.

Infrastructure lasts for generations. Policies change. Governments change. Technology changes. Uses change.

The decisions being made today will shape the Canada our children inherit tomorrow.

That is why every Canadian, not just those in Sturgeon County, should be paying attention.

Back to the Access Agreement … And suddenly I wasn’t thinking about internet anymore.

I was thinking about property rights.

Because this isn’t simply an application for internet service, in fact as I mentioned there is no internet provider selected yet!

It is a legal agreement, with NO expiration.

One that gives Sturgeon County permission to install County-owned communications infrastructure on private property and provides ongoing rights to access that infrastructure for inspection, maintenance, servicing, and replacement. The agreement states the installed facilities remain the property of the County.

“Sturgeon County has the right to install, access, and maintain fibre optic cables, conduits, optical network terminals and other accessories and equipment (the “Facilities”) on the Property. Sturgeon County, its officers, employees, agents or contractors (the “County”) can enter the Property, with any necessary equipment or machinery, for the purposes of: installing the Facilities from the roadside to the primary building on the Property; inspecting, servicing, and replacing the Facilities as may be required from time to time; and accessing the primary building, by appointment, to install, service or replace the Facilities. The Facilities are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of the County,…”

The Legal Blank Check Hidden in the Fine Print

Notice what is missing: definition.

In contract law, leaving a term like “other accessories and equipment” completely undefined is the equivalent of handing the state a blank check. Because there is no exclusionary clause stating that these “facilities” are limited strictly to passive internet cables, the door is left wide open. If public policy shifts or new municipal mandates are introduced five or ten years from now, the government already possesses your signed, permanent legal consent to attach any device they deem an “accessory” to your home, whether that means smart grid sensors, data-collection relays, or automated surveillance cameras, without ever having to ask your permission again.

Furthermore, the contract serves as a massive liability trap. While the County relies on your voluntary signature to cross your property line, the document explicitly states that you are solely responsible for marking unregistered private lines (like well, septic, or detached garage power lines). If their contractors cut your lines, they aren’t liable. But if their equipment is damaged on your property post-installation, the financial burden of repairs falls entirely on you.

That made me stop DEAD IN MY TRACKS!!!!

It should make you stop too.

Follow the Money: The $15.7 Million Paper Trail

To understand the true nature of this project, we must look at the sheer financial absurdity of its scale. The money funneling into Sturgeon County isn’t a random local grant; it is a highly coordinated, multi-level taxpayer injection. The official funding breakdown reveals the exact weight behind this push:

Ask yourself: In an era where Canada is drowning in unprecedented debt, where inflation is rampant, where record numbers of families are lining up at food banks, and where people are actively losing their homes to skyrocketing living costs, why are all three levels of government suddenly unified in spending nearly $15.8 million dollars to install physical wires to rural properties that already have functional high-speed wireless, cellular, and satellite internet? Now I am not a math major but when you break it down, the government is spending upwards of $7,000+ per household just to run a physical line from the roadside ditch to a private porch.

Since when does a debt-ridden state care this deeply about rural entertainment? The answer is simple: They don’t. They are building a utility grid that they require every single citizen to be physically plugged into.

THE DIGITAL TRAP: How a Local Broadband Contract is Quietly Laying the Grid for Global Control

The Global Connection: Anchoring the Grid for Agenda 2030

This is not a localized coincidence. Identical, synchronized broadband initiatives are being rolled out simultaneously across the United States, the European Union, Australia, and G7 nations. It is a top-down global mandate.

When you investigate the documentation of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 and the World Economic Forum’s frameworks for the “Fourth Industrial Revolution,” the puzzle pieces lock into place. Global planners have openly stated their commitment to a total “Whole-of-Government Digital Transformation.”

A physical fiber-optic connection running into every single home and business is the fundamental baseline infrastructure required to execute the next phase of centralized global control:

1. Programmable Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs): A cashless society controlled by programmable digital money requires a flawless, 100% interconnected network grid where no property can go “off-grid.”

2. Smart Grids and Environmental Enforcement: Real-time monitoring of household energy grids, smart water meters, and individual carbon-tracking systems require massive data pipes capable of constant, automated telemetry.

3. Digital Identity and Biometric Authentication: The transition away from localized physical governance into centralized digital IDs, digital health passports, and online access to societal services requires every citizen to be anchored to a trackable network endpoint.

The global technocratic “beast” cannot implement these systems But because a direct federal mandate to drill holes into every citizen’s house would spark immediate revolt, they have decentralized the execution. on paper; it requires physical access to your private land.

They use local municipal councils and familiar, friendly faces to hand you a “voluntary” utility paper wrapped in the guise of local progress.

But where is the data from this new grid ultimately meant to go?

Look no further than platforms like the World Council on City Data (WCCD) (news.dataforcities.org). Heavily backed by the United Nations and the Canadian federal government, the WCCD is an international body that certifies municipal infrastructure under strict global “ISO Smart City Standards” (such as ISO 37120 and 37122). Their open goal is to standardize the collection of real-time, high-calibre data from local communities to monitor everything from energy usage to carbon emissions.

The Line in the Sand: The Power of Refusal

There is a fierce debate among those who oppose this global takeover. Some argue that fighting local projects is a waste of time, a distraction from hitting the “head of the beast” at the international level.

But does that way of thinking miss a fatal flaw of the global agenda?

The entire system relies on our voluntary compliance.

The international framework can pass all the resolutions they want, and the federal government can allocate billions in grant money, but the entire apparatus is completely halted at your property line unless you sign that paper. The system legally cannot touch your home without your signature.

Focusing on this broadband project is not a distraction, it is the frontline in my opinion. It is the exact physical space where the global digital grid attempts to grip your life.

If you want to stop the digital trap, the solution is remarkably simple. Do not sign the agreement. Warn your neighbors about the open-ended language in the text. Let them know that saying “NO” carries no penalties, and that their current internet will remain completely intact.

They can lay their global grid in the public roadside ditch, but as long as we hold the line, they cannot have our homes.

For Those Who Already Signed: The Right to Remorse

Under contract law and consumer protection, the window to change your mind depends entirely on how and where the agreement was signed.

Standard “Cooling-Off” Laws

In Canada, provincial consumer protection acts (such as Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act) grant citizens an absolute “cooling-off period” to cancel a contract without any penalty.

• The 10-Day Window: If a municipal rep or contractor solicited, negotiated, or finalized this agreement in person at a doorstep (a direct sale/prepaid contract), the homeowner has an absolute legal right to cancel within 10 days of receiving the signed copy.

• The Extended Window (Up to 1 Year): Under Section 28 of Alberta’s Consumer Protection Act, if a contract fails to explicitly include mandatory information, such as the exact statutory wording of a buyer’s right to cancel, detailed payment disclosures, or clear definitions of services, the cancellation right can legally be extended for up to one full year.

I have probably dumped enough for one day…but please stay tuned…While managing data inside our homes is a critical first step, the larger structural battle isn't happening on our screens, it is happening on our land. “Quit f**king the dog.” or “Sh*t or get off the pot”

Our watchdogs are still here. They still bark. But increasingly, they either have no authority to act … or they’re quietly being removed altogether.

For some of us Albertans, that’s becoming difficult to ignore. I hope after reading this you will SHARE this information with EVERY Albertan you know.

Yesterday It Became Reality

While many Albertans were enjoying the Canada Day long weekend, a major change quietly came into effect.

As of July 2, 2026, Alberta driver’s licences and identification cards now include a person’s Personal Health Number (PHN) and a Canadian citizenship marker.

The government describes the change as modernizing services and improving convenience. Perhaps. But before this change took effect, Alberta’s own Information and Privacy Commissioner publicly warned that it raised increased privacy concerns. That alone should have prompted a serious public conversation. Instead, the rollout proceeded.

Wanting answers, I wrote directly to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner asking a series of straightforward questions.

Could Albertans opt out?

Had a Privacy Impact Assessment been completed?

How would PHNs be protected when driver’s licences are routinely shown to employers, retailers, hotels, landlords, financial institutions, security guards, pharmacies and countless others?

What protections existed for seniors, people with disabilities, or Albertans who no longer drive?

Would health care become indirectly tied to driver’s licence renewal?

The response I received stopped me in my tracks.

The Commissioner’s Office explained that it could not investigate my complaint because it does not have jurisdiction over the Registrar of Motor Vehicles … the very office responsible for collecting the information that now appears on Alberta’s driver’s licences.

Read that again.

The province’s privacy watchdog acknowledged that it cannot investigate the government office implementing one of Alberta’s most significant changes involving personal information.

That isn’t just a legal technicality. It’s a governance issue.

If the Privacy Commissioner cannot independently investigate concerns involving the Registrar...

Who can?

The Watchdog Warned Us. To be clear, the Commissioner did not remain silent. She publicly expressed increased privacy concerns. She wrote to the Alberta government. She announced her office would prepare guidance for Albertans because of the significance of these changes.

Yet despite those concerns, the program proceeded.

And the Commissioner herself acknowledged that her office lacks jurisdiction over the Registrar responsible for administering it.

That should concern every Albertan, regardless of political affiliation.

Then Alberta Quietly Lost Another Watchdog

Just days before the driver’s licence changes came into force, another announcement received very little, IF ANY, public attention.

After 22 years, the Alberta Water Council announced it was shutting down after provincial funding was withdrawn.

According to its own announcement, the Council served as a neutral forum that brought together municipalities, industry, government, Indigenous organizations, environmental groups and other stakeholders to provide advice on Alberta’s water future.

Its Executive Director described the organization as an independent place where difficult conversations could occur and consensus could be built.

Now it is gone.

Again, a few obvious question remain unanswered.

Who replaces that independent voice?

and Will another advisory body take its place?

not to mention, Will those responsibilities simply move inside government?

Albertans haven’t been told.

Maybe These Are Isolated Events...

Perhaps these two stories have nothing to do with one another.

One involves privacy.

The other involves water.

But both raise exactly the same question.

What happens when independent oversight is weakened, limited, or disappears?

That question becomes even more important when Alberta is simultaneously making decisions involving:

• artificial intelligence infrastructure;

• massive data centres;

• water allocation;

• digital identity systems;

• expanding ministerial authority;

• and increasingly centralized administrative systems.

Each decision deserves to be examined on its own merits.

But together they reveal something worth paying attention to.

This Isn’t About Left or Right

Many Albertans elected Premier Danielle Smith believing her government would reduce bureaucracy, restore accountability, and push back against increasing centralization.

Yet some recent decisions have left people asking whether Alberta is moving in a different direction than they expected.

This is not about whether one supports the UCP, the NDP, or any other political party.

It is about whether governments—of any political stripe—should strengthen independent oversight or weaken it.

History has shown that concentration of power is not defined by ideology.

Governments labelled conservative, liberal, progressive or socialist are all capable of expanding executive authority.

That’s why independent oversight exists.

Not to obstruct government.

But to protect the public.

Perhaps We’ve Been Asking the Wrong Question

For years, Canadians have been encouraged to see politics as a battle between left and right. Conservative versus Liberal. Blue versus orange. Rural versus urban.

Maybe that’s exactly the debate we’re supposed to have.

Because while we argue over political labels...Government continues to grow. Data collection expands. Decision-making becomes more centralized. Independent oversight becomes less certain.

Regardless of which party happens to be in power. Whether you call that globalization, administrative centralization, or simply modern governance is a matter of opinion.

The facts, however, deserve examination.

A Privacy Commissioner who warns of increased privacy concerns but cannot investigate.

A 22-year independent water advisory council that quietly disappears.

These are not insignificant administrative changes.

They are reminders that democracy depends on more than elections.

It depends on strong institutions that are independent enough and empowered enough, to ask difficult questions before decisions are made.

Albertans deserve watchdogs with teeth.

Not watchdogs on a leash.

Because once independent oversight is weakened, citizens are left with one thing:

Trust, and trust alone has never been an adequate substitute for accountability.

1. Who is Watching the Watchdogs?

If Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner says she lacks jurisdiction over the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, who independently oversees the collection and use of our personal information?

Liberal.

Government continues to grow.

Technology continues to expand.

Personal information continues to be collected.

Power continues to become more centralized.

Have we been arguing about the wrong things?

Who Will?

Independent oversight exists for one reason.

To protect the public.

If watchdogs lack jurisdiction...

or disappear altogether...

who is left asking the difficult questions before decisions are made?

Or does that responsibility now fall to ordinary Albertans?

The Final Question

Perhaps the most important question isn’t one for government.

It’s one for each of us.

At what point do we stop assuming someone else is watching... and realize that we are the watchdogs now?

So perhaps it’s time we stopped seducing Fido. Because the health of a democracy is measured not by how loudly governments speak, but by how free its watchdogs are to bark, investigate, and, when necessary, bite.

As a retired dental hygienist, I’ve spent decades helping people keep their teeth. Maybe now it’s time we gave Alberta’s watchdogs theirs back. After all, watchdogs without teeth don’t protect democracy...

They just bark while someone else steals the steak.

Alberta's Privacy Commissioner has now issued separate guidance for citizens, private businesses and public bodies. Not because nothing changed, but because something significant did. The guidance repeatedly warns against overcollection of personal information and explains how to avoid collecting, retaining or disclosing information that many organizations may have no authority to collect in the first place. That raises a reasonable public policy question: if so much guidance is needed to reduce the new privacy risks, could those risks have been reduced through the design of the system itself? PLEASE READ IT.

If I were the Devil and wanted to steal a province…a country…and more,

I wouldn’t send an army. I wouldn’t need tanks. No, I wouldn’t fire a single shot.

I would leave the flag flying. I would leave the legislature standing. I would leave the courts open. I would leave the schools open. I would even let the people keep voting.

Because if I were the Devil, I would know something history has taught again and again.

The easiest thing to steal...is something people believe they still possess.

So I wouldn’t begin with politicians. Politicians come and go. I would begin with institutions. I would capture the regulators before I captured the government. I would influence the universities before I influenced the courts. I would shape the bureaucracy before I shaped public opinion. Because governments may change every four years. Institutions remain.

If I was the Devil, I would change the language.

I would never speak of surrender. I would speak of partnership.

I would never speak of control. I would speak of collaboration.

I would never speak of surveillance. I would speak of safety.

I would never speak of centralization. I would speak of resilience.

I would never speak of global governance. I would speak of international cooperation. Every word would sound noble. Every policy would appear reasonable. Every step would seem too small to notice.

If I were the Devil, next I would go to the schools.

Not to teach children what to think...but how to think about their country. I would reshape history. Redefine citizenship. Reframe identity. And by the time they graduated, they would see the world through a lens I had carefully crafted. Then I would go to the universities. Because today’s students become tomorrow’s judges...

Tomorrow’s lawyers...

Tomorrow’s teachers...

Tomorrow’s planners...

Tomorrow’s journalists...

Tomorrow’s bureaucrats...

Tomorrow’s ministers.

If they all learned from the same framework…. I wouldn’t need to convince them later.

If I were the Devil, I would quietly standardize the municipalities.

I would encourage common frameworks. Common indicators. Common reporting. Common strategic plans. Common definitions of progress. Every city would believe it was simply modernizing. Few, if any, would ask who wrote the standards.

Then I would redefine governance. Not with revolution, with agreements. Not with force, with policy. Not in a single dramatic act.

But one regulation...

One implementation plan...

One court decision...

One curriculum...

One agreement...

One administrative change...

At a time.

If I were the Devil, I would redefine land.

Not by confiscation. By interpretation. By legislation. By negotiated agreements. By gradually changing who makes decisions, how they are made, and under what authority.

And I would make every change sound compassionate.

Every reform sound necessary.

Every question sound unreasonable.

If anyone asked difficult questions...

I would never answer them. I would question the questioner. I would call them uninformed. Divisive. Extreme. Small Fringe Minority.

Because nothing is more dangerous than a citizen who reads the documents.

If I was the Devil, I would divide the people.

Not because division is the goal...But because divided people rarely compare timelines. They rarely follow funding. They rarely read legislation. They rarely ask who benefits. They argue with one another while institutions quietly evolve around them.

And if I were the Devil...

I would hope that every new policy was viewed in isolation.

Every law as an exception.

Every agreement as unrelated.

Because once people begin connecting the dots... They begin seeing the pattern. And patterns are difficult to hide.

So if I were the Devil...

I would pray that good people remained too busy...

Too distracted...

Too divided...

Or too trusting...

To ever read the documents for themselves.

Because the day they do...

They might begin asking different questions.

Not “Who should we blame?” But... “How did we get here?”

And once a free people begin asking that question...

The spell begins to break.

If I were the Devil…I’d be delighted that most people still believe none of this could ever happen in Canada.

I happened to stand up and look around the examination room. Three notices had been taped to the wall, no idea how long they have been there as this is the first time that I had a good look. I did not have my reading glasses with me so I took pictures, the doctor came in right away and I kind of forgot about the notices.

When I got home I opened them up…One notice outlined a fee schedule for uninsured services. Another informed patients that appointments would now be limited to discussing a maximum of two medical concerns. If you have more than 2 concerns you will have to book another appointment…odd but … The third stopped me in my tracks.

It announced that Artificial Intelligence is now be used during my medical consultation. No one mentioned it when I booked my appointment. No one mentioned it when I checked in. No one asked for my permission. I have no idea how long this has been going on

.

That was the moment I realized something profound had changed.

Doctors Have Always Looked for Better Ways to Keep Notes. Let me be clear. This is not an article criticizing my doctor. Family physicians today are buried under paperwork. Every minute they spend typing is a minute they are not looking at their patients. Years ago, many physicians used a Dictaphone. After the appointment, they would dictate their notes into a recorder. A medical transcriptionist, someone bound by strict confidentiality, would type the report. The doctor reviewed it, made corrections if necessary, and signed the final chart. Patients generally understood what was happening. The recording had one purpose: creating the doctor’s medical notes.

Artificial Intelligence is different.

Instead of dictating after the appointment, AI may now participate during the conversation itself. That changes the nature of one of the most private conversations any of us will ever have.

Is a Poster on the Wall Informed Consent?

The notice states:

“Your participation is completely voluntary.” That sounds reassuring. But voluntary participation requires that people know they have a choice. No one asked me whether I wanted AI involved in my appointment. No one explained how to decline. No one said,

“Before we begin, I’d like to let you know I use an AI scribe to assist with my charting. Would you like to participate, or would you prefer I document today’s visit manually?”

Instead, the information was posted on a sheet of paper taped to the wall.

Is that informed consent? Or is it simply notification? Those are two very different things.

The notice answered none of the questions I immediately had.

Who makes this AI? Where is my information processed? Is my conversation recorded? If it is recorded, how long is it kept? Does the audio ever leave Canada? Can the AI company access my information? Is any of my medical information used to improve the software? If I refuse to participate, will my doctor simply take notes the old-fashioned way?

I don’t know. And I suspect many physicians may not know every technical detail either. Their expertise is medicine. They understandably rely on software vendors, clinic administrators, and privacy assurances when adopting new technologies intended to reduce documentation time.

But if doctors cannot answer these questions, who can?

A Curious Detail

One sentence in the notice particularly caught my attention.

It assured patients that the AI complies with HIPAA. Isn’t HIPAA American legislation. This is an Alberta medical clinic.

Why are Alberta patients being reassured about compliance with U.S. privacy legislation instead of Alberta’s own Health Information Act?

Perhaps there is a simple explanation and patients deserve one.

Why This Matters Now

This notice appeared, or at least I noticed it, just as Alberta announced it will be issuing new driver’s licences displaying each person’s Personal Health Number.

Healthcare is becoming increasingly digital. Identity is becoming increasingly digital.

Artificial Intelligence has quietly entered the examination room.

These developments may have different purposes, but together they highlight a larger reality: more of our most personal information is being collected, processed, and managed through digital systems.

That makes transparency more important than ever.

This Isn’t About Fear

Maybe technology can improve healthcare, if AI allows physicians to spend more time listening to patients instead of typing into a computer, that might be a worthwhile goal. But trust does not come from technology.

Trust comes from transparency.

Patients deserve to understand how their information is handled before they begin discussing the most personal aspects of their lives.

Before Your Next Appointment...

You may wish to ask a few simple questions.

Will AI be used during my visit? What AI system are you using? Is my conversation recorded? Where is my information processed? Can I decline? If I decline, will my care be affected in any way?

These are not anti-technology questions.

They are pro-patient questions.

One Final Thought

For generations, the examination room was a place where two people met in confidence: a patient and a physician.

Today, there may be a third participant.

Not another doctor, or is it? Not a nurse, or is it?

Artificial Intelligence.

Perhaps this technology will ultimately improve patient care, or perhaps it will train AI to eliminate your doctor…

Perhaps it will become as routine as electronic medical records. But before we accept its presence in one of the most private spaces in our lives, every patient deserves something more than a notice taped to the wall.

They deserve an honest conversation.

Because informed consent begins with being informed.

A Thought for My Doctor and Yours … and the Clinic Staff

I genuinely appreciate the care you provide and understand that AI scribes are being introduced to reduce paperwork and allow physicians to spend more time with patients.

But I can’t help wondering...

As AI learns from thousands, or eventually millions, of patient encounters, are today’s physicians unknowingly helping train the very systems that may one day replace many of the tasks they currently perform?

History has shown that technology often begins as a tool to assist workers before gradually assuming more of their responsibilities.

I hope AI remains just that, a tool that supports physicians rather than one that ultimately diminishes the human relationship at the heart of medicine.

It’s a question worth asking before convenience quietly becomes dependency.

The response I received was not what I expected.

Like many Albertans, I assumed the province’s privacy watchdog would be responsible for overseeing a program that places Personal Health Numbers on driver’s licences and identification cards.

I was wrong.

The Commissioner’s office informed me that it does not have jurisdiction over the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, the very branch responsible for collecting and displaying this information

.

STOP! Read that again.

The office charged with protecting Albertans’ privacy cannot accept complaints regarding the government branch implementing the program. (triple highlighted)

But that wasn’t the most surprising revelation.

The Commissioner also confirmed that she had previously recommended against placing Personal Health Numbers on driver’s licences because doing so creates additional privacy and fraud risks.

And according to her June 4 statement:

“The issues that I expressed in December last year in my news release and letter to government remain a concern.”

In plain English, Alberta’s independent Privacy Commissioner warned the government. The government moved ahead anyway.

Kinda like putting an electronic no bark collar on your watch/guard dog don’t ya think?

That should concern Albertans regardless of where they stand on the policy itself. Because this story is no longer about driver’s licences. It is about governance.

Over the past several years, I have watched a growing pattern emerge in Alberta. Bill after bill. Policy after policy. Administrative change after administrative change. Viewed individually, each can be explained away.

Strong mayor powers are about efficiency. Provincial intervention in municipalities is about accountability. Red Tape Reduction is about streamlining government. AI infrastructure is about economic development. Water legislation is about modernization. The new driver’s licence is about convenience.

But at some point we have to stop looking at each piece in isolation.

The question becomes:

What happens when we connect the dots? What do all of these initiatives have in common?

More authority concentrated at the provincial level. More discretion granted to ministers. More decisions removed from local communities. More reliance on centralized digital systems. More integration of information and administrative functions.

And increasingly, less meaningful oversight.

That last point is what struck me most about the Commissioner’s response.

If Alberta’s own Privacy Commissioner can publicly oppose a policy, publicly state that her concerns remain, and publicly acknowledge that the implementing agency falls outside her jurisdiction, then who exactly is providing independent oversight? Who is asking the hard questions?

Who is ensuring appropriate safeguards exist?

Who is protecting Albertans from future expansion of these systems?

Those are not partisan questions. Those are democratic questions. Whether you support the new driver’s licences or oppose them is almost beside the point.

The larger issue is whether Alberta is moving toward a model where more information, more authority, and more decision-making become concentrated in fewer hands. Because history teaches us that freedom is rarely lost all at once. It is usually surrendered incrementally.

One bill.

One regulation.

One administrative change.

One “efficiency.”

One “modernization.”

One “convenience.”

At some point, citizens must stop asking whether each individual policy seems reasonable and start asking a more important question:

Where is all of this leading?

The Privacy Commissioner just gave Albertans a reason to ask.

Beginning July 2, 2026, Alberta driver’s licences and identification cards will undergo one of the most significant changes in their history. According to the Government of Alberta, new licences and ID cards will display:

• A Canadian citizenship marker (where applicable)
• An Alberta Personal Health Number (PHN)
• Additional information related to legal entitlement to remain in Canada

The government describes these changes as a matter of convenience, security, and streamlined access to services.

But many Albertans are asking an important question:

When were we consulted?

A Driver’s Licence Is No Longer Just a Driver’s Licence

Historically, a driver’s licence served a simple purpose: proving identity and demonstrating that a person was licensed to operate a motor vehicle.

Under the new system, Albertans will be required to:

• Revalidate Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) eligibility
• Provide proof of legal entitlement to remain in Canada
• Have a Personal Health Number displayed on their licence or identification card

This represents a significant expansion in the purpose of the document.

A driver’s licence is routinely shown to employers, retailers, banks, hotels, landlords, security personnel, and many others. It is one of the most commonly presented pieces of identification in daily life. How many times have you checked into a hotel and they take photos front and back of your license and credit card? Or renting a vehicle?

Many Albertans should now be asking why a health identifier must be displayed on a document that is regularly shared with third parties who have no need to know it.

The Missing Opt-Out

One of the most striking aspects of the government’s announcement is what it does not say. The Alberta government states that beginning July 2, 2026, driver’s licences and identification cards will display a Personal Health Number for eligible Albertans.

However, nowhere in the public information provided does the government clearly state:

• That participation is voluntary
• That Albertans may opt out
• That Albertans may continue to maintain separate health and identification credentials

If this initiative is truly about convenience, why is there no clearly stated choice?

The Question Nobody Is Asking

Buried within the government’s announcement is a statement that deserves far greater scrutiny:

“The expiry date for health insurance coverage will be the same as the driver’s licence or identification card expiry date for those who have their PHN on one of these cards.”

Albertans should pause and consider the implications.

Under existing Alberta law, driver’s licence renewals can be denied or delayed for reasons entirely unrelated to health care.

Examples include:

• Unpaid provincial fines
• Maintenance Enforcement Program restrictions
• Other registry-related compliance issues

This raises an obvious question:

If a driver’s licence cannot be renewed, what happens to the health coverage that is now being administratively linked to that licence?

The government’s website does not clearly answer that question…actually it doesn’t even attempt to answer that question, were they hoping you wouldn’t either?

To be clear, I am not suggesting that Albertans will automatically lose access to health care because of a parking ticket or unpaid fine. I am asking the government to explain precisely how these systems will interact and what protections exist to ensure that health coverage remains completely independent from unrelated licensing issues.

Albertans deserve a clear answer before implementation begins.

Privacy Concerns Already Raised

The Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner has publicly expressed concerns regarding the inclusion of Personal Health Numbers on driver’s licences and identification cards.

The Commissioner warned of increased risks associated with identity theft, misuse of personal information, and the broader disclosure of health identifiers in everyday transactions. These concerns should not be dismissed. They should be debated openly and transparently.

Why Were Albertans Not Consulted?

Perhaps the most important question is the simplest.

Neither the UCP election platform nor the last provincial election campaign informed Albertans that their Personal Health Number would be displayed on their driver’s licence. There was no referendum. There was no province-wide consultation. There was no public debate prior to implementation.

Yet on July 2, every Albertan renewing a licence or identification card may be affected.

Regardless of political affiliation, Albertans should be asking whether a change of this magnitude should proceed without meaningful public consultation and informed consent.

And So You Ask What Can I Do?

• Your local MLA
• Ministers
• The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta

I would also contact your local news reporter, both mainstream and independent journalists. Ask them:

1. Is participation voluntary?

2. Is there an opt-out?

3. What happens if a driver’s licence cannot be renewed due to fines or enforcement actions?

4. Why was there no public consultation?

5. Will the government release all privacy impact assessments related to this initiative?

This is not a partisan issue. It is a question of privacy, transparency, informed consent, and democratic accountability.

What safeguards exist to ensure that integrated identity systems cannot be used in the future to condition access to services on compliance with unrelated government requirements? To me the issue is not whether Alberta has a social credit score today. The issue is whether we are eroding the separation between health, identity, and government services without clear limits, transparency, and informed consent.

Let’s not give the barcode on the back a free pass…

The government has told Albertans what is printed on the new driver's licence. It has not told Albertans everything that may be encoded within it. Most people assume a barcode simply stores the information visible on the card, but modern identification systems can also contain unique identifiers, authentication keys, document history, and links to external databases. The real concern is not what the barcode contains today; it is what could be added tomorrow without public debate or informed consent. If the government expects Albertans to accept a licence that now combines identity, citizenship verification, and health information, then Albertans deserve full transparency regarding every data field stored on the card, every system capable of reading it, and every database that can be accessed through it.

Afterthought:

I had to add one more nagging thought…The government has suggested that “There are roughly five million Albertans but there are five and a half million health cards in circulation,” Nally said. “That comes at a cost… we feel strongly (the cards) will pay for itself just for the security.” To which I ask, of the 5.5 million health cards reportedly in circulation, how many represent active eligible Albertans, how many are duplicates, how many belong to deceased individuals, how many belong to people no longer residing in Alberta, and how many represent other administrative categories. Why do they jump straight to health care fraud? If the problem is duplicate or outdated health cards, why not clean up the health-card database instead of integrating health identifiers with driver's licences?

Albertans have not been provided with evidence demonstrating that the alleged problem stems from the health card itself. If in fact they can show that the alleged 500,000 extra cards were actually obtained fraudulently I ask: if fraudsters can obtain health cards using false information, what prevents them from obtaining driver's licences or identification cards using the same fraudulent documents? Before combining multiple identifiers onto a single card, Albertans deserve a clear explanation of how this change addresses the root cause of the problem rather than simply shifting it from one credential to another.

And so I will leave you with one last thought…Many government programs are never technically mandatory, look back just a few years ago. Instead, compliance is encouraged by gradually linking more services, benefits, and administrative functions to a single system. Citizens are told they remain free to opt out, (not seen here as of now), yet opting out becomes increasingly inconvenient or impractical. This is why Albertans should pay close attention to the integration of health identifiers, citizenship verification, and government-issued identification. The question is not whether the government is forcing participation today. The question is whether a framework is being created in which participation becomes the path of least resistance and non-participation becomes progressively more difficult. True choice requires meaningful alternatives, not merely the theoretical ability to decline.

Albertans deserve answers before July 2, not after.

I must say right out of the gate while I am referring to Alberta in this article, the same holds true for wherever you are from …this is a GLOBAL thing…

Like many Albertans, I was watching the explosion of proposed AI data centres across our province with growing concern. Massive facilities. Massive power demands. Massive water requirements. Massive investments from some of the largest corporations and investment firms on the planet.

The deeper I dug, the more uneasy I became. So I did what I always do. I started sounding the alarm.

And then something happened that made me stop and look twice.

As opposition to AI data centres began gaining momentum across Alberta, something unexpected happened. The mainstream media started talking about it. Even doing interviews with Erin Brockovich. At first that might not sound unusual. But over the years I’ve learned to pay attention not only to what the media ignores, but also to what it suddenly decides deserves attention.

For years, concerns about surveillance, digital identity, data collection, smart infrastructure, and emerging technologies were often dismissed, ridiculed, or ignored entirely. Yet suddenly, opposition to AI data centres was becoming part of the public conversation.

That was a red flag for me. Not because it proved anything. But it made me pause. It made me question whether I was looking at the whole picture. I kept saying without the AI Data Centres Agenda 2030 can’t advance…this has to be throwing a kink in the plan…but why is the government’s narrative pushers now talking about it?

Around that same time, I was discussing the growing resistance to AI data centres in Alberta with Aman Jabbi. I expected him to be excited. After all, people were finally paying attention. People were asking questions. People were organizing. People were pushing back. And Aman agreed that was a good thing.

But then he reminded me of something he has been talking about for years. What he describes as the 5 pillars required to build a technocratic control system. In particular, he pointed me back to the Internet of Things (IoT). The sensors. The cameras. The smart streetlights. The smart meters. The connected devices.

The infrastructure quietly collecting data and feeding information into larger systems.

His message was simple. If we want to stop feeding the beast, we need to pay attention to the infrastructure already being installed around us.

We need to start asking our municipalities hard questions. Why are smart technologies being deployed? Who owns the data? Who has access to it? Can citizens opt out? Can these systems be reversed?

Because while everyone is focused on the giant AI data centres, the nervous system that feeds them is already spreading into our communities one device at a time.

And that is when the difficult question entered my mind.

What if the AI data centres are not the story? What if they are simply the brain? And what if we are fighting the brain while ignoring the nervous system?

Think about the human body for a moment. A brain without eyes cannot see. A brain without ears cannot hear. A brain without nerves cannot feel. A brain without sensors cannot collect information.

The brain may process information, but it is the nervous system that gathers it.

So why are we spending so much time talking about the brain while paying so little attention to the nervous system?

The AI data centres are easy to spot. They are giant. They require public hearings (even though they do them in secret). They need transmission lines. Substations. Power plants. Water (not to worry in Alberta the UCP passed Bill 7). Permits (again not a worry in Alberta we have red tape reduction). Environmental reviews (unless the Premier and her ministers waive that requirement).

People do notice them. People fight them. People write articles about them.

But what about everything else?

The cameras quietly appearing on poles and buildings. The smart streetlights. The smart meters. The connected vehicles. The sensors embedded in infrastructure. The license plate readers. The facial recognition systems. The digital payment systems. The apps collecting behavioural data.

The endless Internet of Things devices being woven into everyday life. Most people barely notice them.

For months I have argued that Alberta is being transformed into an AI hub. I still believe that. But lately I have begun to wonder if the giant buildings are acting like a magician’s flourish. The hand waving in front of our face while something else happens behind the curtain.

Because an AI data centre by itself is useless. It needs data. Lots of it. Endless amounts of it. It needs eyes. It needs ears. It needs sensors. It needs connectivity.

It needs a nervous system.

And then another thought hit me.

What if we are doing exactly what we have always done?

What if we are being encouraged to focus on the visible fight while missing the deeper transformation taking place all around us? First we were told to focus on Ottawa. Then on transfer payments. Then on equalization. Then on separation Then on independence. Now on AI data centres. Meanwhile, the infrastructure that feeds these systems continues to spread.

Quietly. Incrementally. One camera. One sensor. One smart device. One connected system at a time.

Please understand what I am saying.

I am not suggesting AI data centres don’t matter. They do. I remain deeply concerned about the scale and speed of what is being proposed across Alberta.

But perhaps they are only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Perhaps the brain is not the system. Perhaps the nervous system deserves equal scrutiny.

One thing I find interesting is that although the proposed AI data centres near Gibbons and Sturgeon County are happening practically in my backyard, I keep finding myself drawn to Olds, Alberta.

At first, that didn’t make much sense to me. After all, if AI data centres are the concern, shouldn’t I be focusing on the giant projects being proposed right here in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland? and the ones being quietly proposed in RMWB (sorry Mr. Brian Jean, Robbie Picard, Town Council buckle up…much more coming on this one)

Yet every time I start pulling on the thread, I end up back in Olds.

Why?

At first, I thought it was simply because Olds has become one of the most visible and vocal battlegrounds in Alberta’s fight against a proposed $10 billion AI data centre.

Like many Albertans, I watched residents begin asking questions about power, water, land use, and the long-term implications of hosting one of the largest AI developments in the country. That alone would make Olds worth watching.

But the more I looked, the more I realized there was another reason Olds kept appearing on my radar.

For decades, Olds has positioned itself as one of Canada’s most connected communities.

It has been a leader in broadband infrastructure. A leader in smart agriculture. A leader in connected technologies. A leader in data-driven innovation. Today, smart technologies are being used throughout agriculture to monitor crops, soil conditions, irrigation systems, livestock operations, weather patterns, and equipment performance. These technologies are often promoted as tools to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. OR FOR YOUR SAFETY lol

And while there may be benefit to some of them, they also raise an important question.

At what point does a collection of useful technologies become a digital nervous system?

The more I study Olds, the more I find myself wondering whether it offers a glimpse into both sides of the equation. The brain and the nervous system.

The proposed AI data centre represents the brain. The processing power. The computing capacity. The artificial intelligence. But the connected infrastructure already being developed through agriculture, communications, sensors, smart metering, and data systems begins to resemble something else entirely. A nervous system.

The very thing Aman Jabbi has been warning about for years. This is not an attack on Olds. Nor is it an argument against innovation. It is an invitation to ask better questions. Who owns the data? Who stores the data? Who analyzes the data? Who profits from the data?

And what happens when all of these systems become interconnected?

As much as groups like Little Town Big Data have helped bring attention to the AI data centre proposal, perhaps it is time to widen the lens.

Perhaps it is time to start examining the broader Internet of Things infrastructure being deployed not only in Olds, but across Alberta.

Because if AI data centres are the brain, then understanding the nervous system that feeds them may be the most important conversation of all.

And perhaps there is no better place to begin that conversation than Olds…Sounds like an Autopsy is in order…

After all brain without a nervous system is just a lump of tissue. And maybe that’s the piece of the puzzle we have been overlooking.

When I ask who is building the nervous system, I find myself looking beyond governments and political parties. I find myself looking at the institutions shaping the future. Organizations like the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, (take the time to research this one folks), where major financial institutions, technology companies, healthcare corporations, consulting firms, foundations, and global organizations come together to discuss what the next generation of society should look like… who the hell do they think they are?

Because they are discussing the same themes. Connectivity. Digitization. Interoperability. Artificial intelligence. Digital identity. Data collection. Data sharing. Data analysis.

One thing becomes clear… the future being discussed by many of the world’s most powerful institutions depends upon one thing.

Data.

Which brings me back to the question we can’t stop asking.

If AI data centres are the brain...

Who is building the nervous system?

And are we paying enough attention?

What Can You Do?

• Learn the difference between traditional data centres and AI data centres.

• Start paying attention to the infrastructure already around you.

• Ask your municipality whether smart streetlights, sensors, cameras, licence plate readers, or other connected technologies have been or are being installed.

• Find out whether your community uses smart water meters, smart electrical meters, or other IoT-enabled systems.

• Attend municipal council meetings and ask questions before projects are approved.

• Support transparency and public consultation on technology deployments.

• Follow the money. Who is funding the projects? Who owns the data? Who benefits from the data?

• Investigate organizations shaping the future of AI, digital identity, smart cities, and connected infrastructure.

• Talk to your neighbours. Most people have no idea how quickly these systems are being deployed.

• Don’t just ask who is building the AI data centres. Ask who is building the nervous system that feeds them.

Because once you start seeing the nervous system, you begin to realize that the future may not be decided by a single AI data centre, a single law, a single election, or a single political party.

It may be decided by the countless interconnected systems quietly being woven into everyday life.

And that conversation is only just beginning.

But my soul tells me I need to say something that many of you may not want to hear.

What if the same people who sold us the first lie are now selling us the second, kind of a Bogo sale? What if the same political class that spent decades convincing Albertans they were powerless is now offering independence as the solution to a problem they helped create? Before you throw rocks at me, hear me out.

Over the past few months I have been looking into our constitutional history, following the work of people like Timm Stein and the late Doug Force. Material that challenges much of what Canadians have been taught about Confederation, sovereignty, and the true status of the provinces. Whether you agree with every conclusion or not, one thing became painfully clear to me:

We have been encouraged to look backward. To fight over the past. To argue about Ottawa. To debate transfer payments. To rage about equalization. To obsess over separation.

Meanwhile, something entirely different is being built.

AI data centres. Not traditional data centres. AI data centres, a more accurate term would be AI surveillance centres

The distinction matters.

Traditional data centres store information. AI data centres (surveillance centres) are designed to collect, process, analyze, predict, automate, and increasingly make decisions. They are the brains of a new digital infrastructure. The same infrastructure that will power autonomous systems, robotics, predictive analytics, behavioural monitoring, smart infrastructure, digital identity systems, and technologies that most Albertans have never even heard of.

While we argue about whether Alberta should separate from Ottawa, the foundations of a new system are quietly being poured beneath our feet.

And here’s the question nobody seems willing to ask:

Who is approving these projects? Who is subsidizing them? Who is changing regulations to accommodate them? Who is telling us they are necessary? Who is profiting from them? More importantly... Why are so many of the same politicians who claim to support freedom, sovereignty, and Alberta independence simultaneously championing the infrastructure that could ultimately make freedom meaningless?

Look no further than China to understand what becomes possible when artificial intelligence, facial recognition, digital payments, centralized databases, behavioural analytics, and predictive algorithms are integrated into one system.

I am not saying Alberta is China. I am saying the technology exists. The infrastructure is being built. The capability is real. And history teaches us that governments rarely refuse powers that become available to them.

That is why I worry that many freedom-loving Albertans are fighting yesterday’s battle.

What good is political independence if every transaction is tracked? What good is sovereignty if every movement is monitored? What good is a new Alberta flag if the people living beneath it exist inside an open-air digital prison?

An independent Alberta governed by artificial intelligence, behavioural monitoring, predictive systems, and centralized digital infrastructure is not freedom.

It is simply a different manager overseeing the same cage. The hardest truth I have come to accept is this: The people who convinced us that Ottawa held all the power may have been serving us from the same Kool-Aid jug that is now being passed around the independence movement.

The labels have changed. The slogans have changed. The marketing has changed.

But the result is the same.

Keep the people focused on the horizon while the foundations are poured beneath their feet. Keep them looking left. Keep them looking right. Keep them fighting each other. Just don’t let them look down.

Because if Albertans ever stop and examine what is being built in the name of AI, smart infrastructure, security, convenience, and economic development, they may discover that the greatest threat to their freedom is not coming from Ottawa.

It is being constructed right here in Alberta.

And once that infrastructure is complete, separation may no longer matter.

The prison walls will already be standing.

So here’s my challenge to the Alberta independence movement.

Take that passion. Take that frustration. Take that energy. Take the thousands of hours, the rallies, the petitions, the town halls, the endless debates about Ottawa and separation, and direct it toward something where Albertans can still make an immediate difference.

Look around you.

Massive AI data centres are being proposed across this province. Not ten years from now. Not in some distant future. Right now.

These projects are being presented as economic development, innovation, and prosperity. But very few Albertans have been told what they are, what they are designed to do, what infrastructure they require, or what kind of future they are helping to build.

Premier Danielle Smith has spoken of Alberta becoming a leader in AI Data Centres. Some have even described Alberta as being positioned to become a ruler in this new technological age. But before we rush to wear that crown, perhaps we should ask a more important question:

Who will rule whom? Will Albertans rule the technology? Or will the technology ultimately rule Albertans?

The greatest threat to our freedom may not be a politician in Ottawa. It may not be a bureaucrat in Brussels. It may not even be a global institution.

It may be the silent construction of the digital infrastructure that will allow governments, corporations, and artificial intelligence systems to monitor, analyze, predict, and influence human behaviour on a scale never before possible.

If Albertans truly believe in freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, and the right to control their own future, then this is the battle that deserves our attention.

Because once these systems are built, once the infrastructure is in place, once the dependency is created, it will be far harder to stop.

The window for action is now. Not after separation. Not after the next election.

Now!

The question is no longer whether Alberta should be independent. The question is whether Albertans themselves will remain free.

On a final note: Don’t think for a minute this is limited to Alberta this is rolling out around the world..look up where you live and connect the dots

This week it was a video by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about CO₂ pipelines in the United States. Now before anyone rolls their eyes and says, “That’s America, Connie,” hear me out. The video wasn’t what caught my attention. The people did.

A grandmother describing her granddaughter collapsing. Residents struggling to breathe. People waking up in hospital. Vehicles stalling. First responders walking into a situation they didn’t fully understand.

As I listened, I kept thinking, what if it happened here? And you should be asking what if it happened where you live? Because although I am focused in my backyard this is happening in your yard too…no matter where you live!

Then I asked another question. How many Albertans even know we have one of the largest CO₂ pipeline systems in North America operating in our province?

I didn’t say proposed. I said operating.

The Alberta Carbon Trunk Line has been moving CO₂ through Alberta for years. Yet if I stopped 100 Albertans in the grocery store and asked them where it is, what it does, who owns it, who profits from it, or what emergency plans exist if something goes wrong, I suspect most would stare at me like I had three heads. Because nobody talks about it. And that’s exactly what concerns me. Pay attention to the map … do you see it running along side the AI data centre proposed site?

Remember When CO₂ Was the Problem?

For years we were told carbon dioxide was the enemy. The existential threat. The climate villain. The gas that would destroy civilization. (Well that may be true just not the way they fed it to you)

Then something interesting happened.

People started making money from it. Lots of money.

Suddenly we weren’t just talking about reducing CO₂. We were talking about capturing it. Transporting it. Trading credits from it. Generating offsets from it. Burying it underground. Building infrastructure around it. Building industries around it. Building investment opportunities around it. Funny how that works.

“As owner and operator of the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL), Wolf is a world leader in the field of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and is the largest independent CO₂ infrastructure operator in North America. Our system currently gathers 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ per year from the NWR Sturgeon Refinery and Nutrien Redwater Fertilizer facility, delivering it safely to storage in Alberta. The ultimate capacity of the system is 14.6 million tonnes of CO₂ per year and there is significant excess capacity to provide immediate decarbonization solutions to emitters.”

While watching the RFK video, he repeatedly described carbon capture and CO₂ pipeline projects as a major Biden-era climate initiative.

That made me pause. Because here in Alberta, many of the same projects are being celebrated by politicians who spend half their time criticizing Biden. So now I’m confused. When Biden supports carbon capture, carbon sequestration, industrial decarbonization, and government-backed climate infrastructure, conservatives call it climate policy. When Alberta supports carbon capture, carbon sequestration, industrial decarbonization, and government-backed climate infrastructure, we’re told it’s economic development.

Maybe someone can explain the difference… 2 wings same bird?

Because from where I’m sitting, the pipes don’t know whether they’re Democrat or Conservative.

Then Another Dot Appeared …

As many of you know, I’ve spent the last several months researching AI data centres. At first glance, carbon corridors and AI data centres seem unrelated, but the deeper I dig, the more I keep seeing the same things over and over.

Industrial corridors. Transmission corridors. Natural gas infrastructure. Massive electrical demand. Public-private partnerships. Government incentives. The same regions. The same players. The same promises. The same sales pitch.

Trust us. It’s for your future. It’s safe and effective.

We have all heard that line before.

Questions I Think Danielle Smith Should Answer

Premier Smith often speaks about freedom. She speaks about sovereignty. She speaks about protecting Alberta.

Good.

Then let’s have an honest conversation. How much taxpayer money has been committed to carbon capture projects? Who owns the infrastructure? Who receives the carbon credits? Who carries long-term liability? Have first responders along the route received specialized CO₂ emergency training? Have municipalities conducted emergency response exercises? Have residents been informed what to do in the event of a major release? Have schools been informed? Have volunteer fire departments been equipped and trained?

If all of this has been done, show us. Albertans deserve transparency.

So now you ask, What Can I Do?

Contact Premier Danielle Smith. Contact your MLA. Contact your municipal council.

Ask questions. Be polite. Be professional. But don’t be silent.

Ask for maps. Ask for emergency plans. Ask for training records. Ask for costs. Ask for environmental assessments. Ask who profits. Ask who pays.

Most importantly, ask why so many Albertans are only learning about this infrastructure after it has already been built. Because the line in the sand is not when the next project is announced. The line in the sand is when citizens realize the project was already built while nobody was paying attention.

And I suspect more Albertans are about to start paying attention.

Love him or hate him, Wab Kinew just said something that took courage. While politicians across North America are tripping over themselves to attract AI data centres, Kinew said NO.

Not because he is anti-technology. Not because he is anti-business. But because he questioned whether the benefits justified the costs. Then he went a step further and said:

“I reject the idea that we have to be slaves to surveillance capitalism.”

That takes a set of balls in today’s political climate, balls and common sense. When he said, “I reject the idea that we have to be slaves to surveillance capitalism,” he wasn’t talking about left or right.

He was talking about power.

It takes courage to stand up and question an industry being sold as the future of prosperity. It takes even more courage to acknowledge that the systems being built today may eventually control the very people building them.

Perhaps Kinew has realized something many politicians have not.

The digital cage being constructed won’t just hold ordinary citizens. It will hold politicians. It will hold governments. It will hold corporations. It will hold anyone who becomes dependent on it.

The promise is convenience. The product is dependence.

The question is not whether AI can help humanity. Of course it can. The question is who controls the infrastructure? Who owns the data? Who owns the algorithms? Who decides what is acceptable? Who decides who gets access?Who decides who gets excluded?

After all the internet itself emerged from military-funded research. Today, many of the largest AI initiatives are being openly discussed in connection with military, intelligence, and national security objectives. Whether one views that as necessary, beneficial, or concerning, it is a reality that deserves public discussion.

Before you dismiss this as a Canadian or an American issue, take a hard look at the legislation being quietly introduced in your own country. In Canada, examine Bills C-26 and C-22. In the United States, look into FISA Section 702, the Patriot Act, and the National Defense Authorization Acts that increasingly intertwine AI, surveillance, cybersecurity, and national security.

The names may differ from country to country, but the pattern is remarkably similar. Across the globe, governments are expanding digital infrastructure, data collection, AI capabilities, and security powers under various justifications. This is not simply a local issue … it is a global shift that deserves careful scrutiny by every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

Maybe it’s time to shake the jar.

Maybe it’s time to stop arguing about whether AI is good or bad and start asking who benefits from building an infrastructure so powerful that future generations may never be able to opt out.

Because once the cage is finished, the door may still look open.
