Specifically, why it feels so much harder to build the real, deep kind now than it did when I was a kid.

Growing up, connection happened almost by accident. You sat next to someone in class enough times, or lived on the same street, and eventually you were friends. No maintenance plan required. As an adult, none of that structure exists anymore. You have to build it yourself, on purpose, with a brain that doesn’t always make that easy.

My ADHD side shows up as good intentions with terrible follow-through. I’ll think about someone, mean to text them, and then three weeks go by because something louder grabbed my attention first. It’s not that I forgot they exist. It’s that my brain doesn’t hold onto “reach out to so-and-so” the way it holds onto whatever’s directly in front of me. By the time I remember, the moment’s passed and it feels almost harder to reach out because now I have to explain the gap too.

My autistic side shows up differently. It’s less about forgetting and more about capacity. Initiating plans, reading whether someone actually wants to hang out or is just being polite, figuring out the right amount of interest to show in their life without overstepping, all of that takes a kind of energy I don’t always have left over after long hours at work, being a present father for my daughter, and a present husband for my spouse. So I default to the people who already know me, because building that same understanding with someone new feels like starting a whole project I don’t have the bandwidth for.

And then there’s RSD sitting underneath both of those, waiting. Did I text too much. Did I not text enough. Did that lukewarm reply mean something. It turns ordinary friendship maintenance into a guessing game where every move gets analyzed for a meaning that probably isn’t even there. I’ll type out a message, reread it four times, second guess the tone, and sometimes just not send it at all because the risk of getting it wrong feels bigger than the cost of staying quiet.

I think about a friendship I had a few years back, someone I genuinely liked, conversations that felt easy in the moment. Life got busy for both of us, replies got slower, and instead of just saying “hey, I still want this,” I let the gap do the talking. By the time enough time had passed, reaching out felt like it needed an explanation I didn’t have the energy to give. So I didn’t. That’s not a unique story, I know. It’s the pattern underneath it that I keep circling back to, not this one friendship specifically, but how often this exact sequence repeats.

I have people in my life I genuinely enjoy talking to. But if I’m honest, most of the friendships that feel truly deep, the kind where I don’t have to explain myself, are ones I built years ago, before I understood any of this about myself. I don’t have many examples of building that same depth as an adult, post-diagnosis, and I won’t pretend I’ve cracked the code on how to do it.

Someone brought up Dunbar’s research on relationships recently, the idea that there’s a real ceiling on how many close relationships anyone can actually sustain, and that with a partner and a kid, that ceiling gets even lower. It reframed something for me. Maybe I’ve been expecting a level of intimacy across a wide circle that was never actually sustainable for anyone, autistic or not. Maybe the handful of close acquaintances I do have are exactly where my capacity honestly sits right now, and that’s not a failure so much as just the math of a full life.

Some days I tell myself I just haven’t met the right people yet, and it’ll happen eventually. Other days I wonder if this is just what adult friendship looks like now, fewer close people, more meaningful acquaintances, and I’m still not sure how I feel about that.

I don’t have a tidy answer for this one. I’m still living inside the question. But if you’re also wondering whether deep friendship gets harder to build the more self-aware you become, I don’t think you’re imagining it. I think it’s just one more thing nobody warns you about.

What’s helped, even a little, is knowing this isn’t just a personal failing. For me, it’s shaped by a few different things working against each other at once, the follow-through gap, the capacity limits, the RSD guessing game. And honestly, this space, writing here, hearing from people who get it, has become its own kind of connection. Not the same as what I used to have. But real.

Questioning My Own Diagnosis

I got my Level 1 Autism diagnosis on a Tuesday, after my final appointment I’d already known about my ADHD for over a decade, diagnosed in my early twenties, but this was the missing piece, the part of the picture that finally made the whole thing make sense. I remember sitting there after that appointment feeling something I hadn’t felt in a long time. Clarity. Like a lifetime of “why am I like this” finally had an answer.

That clarity didn’t last long though. Almost immediately I felt a strange kind of whiplash, like it wasn’t fully real yet, like I needed someone else to confirm what I already knew was true. Fortunately, or so I thought, I had a therapy appointment the next day with the therapist I’d worked with for years.

Wednesday, he questioned it.

Not maliciously. Not even directly. He said he thought what I was describing sounded more like anxiety, or my ADHD, than autism. One day removed from the most clarifying moment of my adult life, and I was already being handed a reason to doubt it.

And here’s the part that’s hard to admit. It worked. Some part of me latched onto that doubt immediately, like it had been waiting for permission to second guess the whole thing.

That’s the tug of war nobody talks about. You spend years suspecting something’s different about you. You finally get the assessment, the official language, the confirmation. And instead of that being the end of the searching, for a lot of us it’s the start of a new kind of searching. Am I sure. Am I performing this. Did I lead the evaluator. Is this real or did I convince everyone, including myself.

What’s helped is separating the diagnosis from any one person’s reaction to it. My therapist and I have been working together for years, and I respect him a lot, still do. He didn’t have the credentials to diagnose autism himself, and to his credit, he admitted openly in that same session that he didn’t have much experience with late-diagnosed autism, or autism in general. I respected that honesty. At one point he even asked something like whether there were four levels of autism, which told me a lot, not in a way that made me angry, but in a way that made the gap in understanding clear. That honesty is part of what eventually led me to the therapist I work with now, someone who specializes in late-diagnosed AuDHD, and she’s been incredible.

I still have days where the doubt creeps back in. Where I wonder if I’m making too much of it, or not enough. But I’ve stopped treating that doubt as evidence against the diagnosis. It’s just what happens when you spend thirty-some years masking so well, and then suddenly you’re handed permission not to.

I’m about three to four months out from my Level 1 Autism diagnosis now, and I’ve finally had real time to reflect on my life. Things still happen. The overstimulation. The grappling between structure and spontaneity. Needing a few days to recover after a loud, crowded holiday. Rehearsing what I’m going to say before I even walk into a room. And every time, I’m quickly reminded, yes, I have Level 1 Autism. Yes, my brain is wired differently. Yes, my experience may differ from someone else’s. But there’s a great community out there who understands it, and that alone has been the most helpful thing while I keep processing what this diagnosis looks like for me as a father, husband, friend, brother, son, grandson, coworker, all of it.

My diagnosis was just the start. The key I needed to finally unlock a room I always knew was there.

I’m not done exploring it. I don’t think I ever will be. And for the first time, that doesn’t scare me.

On Ruminating

A few weeks ago I set a boundary at Just a simple statement of fact.

He gave me more work anyway.

Thanks for reading! And logically, I know she’s right. But that’s not where my brain went that night. My brain went to, did I say too much. Was I too much. Did I sound ungrateful, difficult, dramatic, for saying a true thing out loud.

I laid there running it back. Not because I didn’t know the answer. I did. I was setting a boundary because I’d actually hit my capacity, not because I was being sensitive about it. But knowing that didn’t stop my brain from replaying the moment on a loop anyway, looking for a version of it I’d gotten wrong.

That’s the part people don’t get about rumination. It’s not indecision. It’s not me being unsure. I already know I was right. My brain just won’t let the moment close. It keeps the tab open long after I’ve read everything on the page.

There’s a cruel irony under all of it too. I’m good at my job. Thorough. Reliable. People call me eagle eyes because I catch what others miss. And that reputation is exactly why I keep ending up buried. More difficult cases, more new hires to train, more meetings, because I’m the one who won’t drop the ball. Being good at what I do gets rewarded with more of what I do, until there’s nothing left of me to do it with.

So the days start to look the same. Work drains the battery. Fatherhood and being a husband use what’s left. By the time I actually have a window to see a friend or do something for myself, I don’t have anything left to bring to it. So I isolate instead, because isolating is the only thing that doesn’t cost more than I have. And then the isolating itself starts to feel like its own kind of loss, one more thing rumination has plenty of material to work with once the lights go out.

Some nights I feel almost robotic by the end of it. Nervous system fried, running on autopilot, still doing what needs to get done because that’s what I do. And then nighttime comes, the one part of the day I’m not being pulled in six directions, and my brain finally has room to open every tab I didn’t have time for. Poor sleep. Then a harder next day. Then less capacity to cope with the next thing that needs replaying.

People mean well when they say just let it go. I understand why they say it. But rumination was never a choice I was making. It’s not stubbornness. It’s a brain that catches patterns for a living and hasn’t figured out how to stop scanning once the day is technically over.

What I’m working on now, in therapy and outside of it, isn’t making the rumination disappear. I don’t think it will, not fully. It’s catching it earlier. Naming it as what it is instead of proof that I did something wrong. And being firmer with the boundary in the first place, so there’s less to replay later. I’m allowed to say I’ve hit capacity. The fact that I’m good at what I do isn’t permission for it to cost me everything else.

I’m still learning that being talented doesn’t mean I owe endless output. Some nights I still lie there and replay it anyway. But I’m getting quicker at recognizing the loop for what it is, and a little faster at putting it down.

Rumination can be a vicious cycle, and it takes a lot of self-awareness and internal work to break free from it. Through therapy, specifically Internal Family Systems, I’ve started learning to stop the cycle more quickly. IFS looks at the mind as made up of different parts, not just one voice, and helps you understand what each part is trying to protect you from, instead of treating it as something to fight or silence. For me, that’s meant recognizing the part of me that ruminates isn’t the enemy. It’s usually trying to protect me from being caught off guard again, from being “too much” again. Once I could see it that way, I stopped needing to win the argument with it every night.

I’m nowhere near perfect at this, and I probably never will be. But being able to name the cycle, and sometimes even catch it before it starts, has given me back energy I didn’t know I was losing. Energy I get to spend on being a father, a husband, a good friend, instead of on a loop that was never mine to carry alone.

The loop doesn’t get to run the show anymore. I do.

Thanks for reading! People learn they can count on you, and somewhere along the way, being counted on turns into being used. Not maliciously, most of the time. Just quietly, repeatedly, until you’re the one holding everything and nobody quite remembers how that happened.

I know that exhaustion well. Thorough at work, so I get the harder cases. Steady at home too, the anchor, even when I’m technically working. Three dogs to manage, a daughter to keep track of, a babysitter moving through the house, all while I’m trying to actually focus on my job. Some days it makes me feel less like the center of my own home and more like a guest passing through it, present for all of it but not really getting to just be in any of it. Good in a crisis, so nobody thinks to check if I’m drowning, because I don’t look like I’m drowning. I look like I’m handling it. That’s the cruelest part of being capable. It hides the exact moment you stop being okay.

Thanks for reading! Saying I’m overstimulated. Saying I’ve hit capacity. Saying, plainly, I need quiet right now. And still, more often than I’d like, the person I’ve said it to keeps talking anyway. Keeps explaining, keeps processing out loud, keeps going, because in their mind they’re not adding to the problem, they’re trying to resolve it. They don’t realize that every additional word is one more wave over my head.

Christmas Eve was like that. The house was full, five dogs, siblings, in-laws, three kids running around in a full-blown ruckus, every surface of the day layered in noise. I could feel myself losing ground, that specific tightening where everything gets too loud and too bright and too much all at once. One of my sisters actually caught it before I said anything, asked if I needed help with something. I just said no and went upstairs, needing a few minutes alone to regain myself before I could come back down and push through the rest of the night.

That part actually worked. She noticed, she asked, and I got the space I needed without having to explain myself. But it’s not always that smooth. More often, even after I’ve said plainly that I need quiet, the conversation keeps going anyway, keeps pulling at me to weigh in, to explain, to stay present just a little longer. Not because anyone means harm. Because nobody realizes that continuing to talk to someone who just told you they’re at capacity is like continuing to hand water to someone who told you they’re already underwater.

That’s the thing people don’t understand about overstimulation if they haven’t lived it. It’s not a mood. It’s not me being difficult or antisocial. My nervous system hits an actual limit, the same kind of limit a body hits with real danger, and once it’s crossed, recovery doesn’t happen in minutes. It can take days. Sometimes longer. And every well-meaning voice that keeps going after I’ve asked for quiet pushes that recovery further out of reach.

The advice people offer usually comes from a good place. Take a trip. Get some rest. You should relax more. But when I’ve already said I’m burnt out, already said this week or this month has been hard, hearing “go get some rest” doesn’t feel like support. It feels like one more task. Now I have to plan the trip, coordinate it, find the energy to enjoy it, on top of everything already draining me. The suggestion assumes the antidote is simple. It rarely is. Sometimes what I actually needed was just for someone to notice, and do something themselves, instead of handing the solution back to me disguised as encouragement.

Underneath all of it there’s a quieter ache I don’t say out loud very often. The sense that I might not be anyone’s actual first priority. That when it comes down to it, work, other obligations, other people’s needs tend to land ahead of mine, even with people I love. I don’t think anyone’s doing it on purpose. But it’s a specific kind of lonely, watching yourself consistently come second, especially when you’ve spent your whole life making sure other people never have to.

Add the state of the world on top of all this, the constant noise of the news, the never-ending scroll, and it stops feeling like a personal struggle and starts feeling like drowning in a current that everyone else seems able to swim through except me. I used to think that meant something was wrong with me. Now I understand it’s a nervous system that takes in more, all the time, without the option to turn the volume down.

I don’t have a clean resolution for any of this. Some weeks are still just hard. But the one thing that has genuinely helped, more than any trip or any amount of rest, has been finding people who understand it without me having to explain the whole thing from scratch. Other AuDHD people. Other late-diagnosed adults. People who’ve felt the same tightening, the same drowning, the same loneliness of being reliable and unseen, and who’ve found their own ways through it.

That’s what this whole space has become for me. Not a place where I have everything figured out, because I don’t. But a place where I’m not the only one holding this. Where saying “I’m at capacity” doesn’t need an explanation, because the people reading already know exactly what that means.

If you’re in it too, drowning quietly, holding it together for everyone but yourself, I don’t have a fix. But I can tell you that you’re not the only one out here treading water. And finding the people who already know that, without you having to say it twice, might be the closest thing to solid ground either of us gets.

Thanks for reading! enforcement, and a mother who did the best she could with what she had, but stayed in a marriage that caused a lot of trauma for the four of us kids. I’m the second oldest. Somewhere along the way I got forced into being an adult before I was ready for it, making dinner for my younger siblings, helping with homework, driving them to activities, all while trying to hold together my own life too.

Thanks for reading! Nobody could tell, because it was all happening under the surface, in my body, invisible to everyone around me. I was the ultimate masker, and eventually it caught up with me.

My daughter came into our lives through a closed adoption, out of state, an emergency situation none of us fully expected. Adoption isn’t for the faint of heart. The process is long, uncertain, emotionally exhausting. But it is so worth it. The day we got the call that she was born changed everything. Holding her for the first time, I knew immediately I needed to figure out my mind, for her.

A year later I was diagnosed with level 1 autism, on top of the ADHD diagnosis I already had.

That first year was hard. New sleep schedules, newborn everything, a complete identity shift. I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it. My spouse, my mom, my mother in law, they carried so much of that season for me. I couldn’t have done it without them. But I still had to carve out time for myself, because if I didn’t, I would have crashed completely. I was already close to burnout even with isolation days built in.

I don’t schedule isolation the way you’d schedule a meeting. I time it. Exercise. Coffee in the morning before anyone needs me yet. Trail walks. My comfort clothes and the same show on repeat in my room. These aren’t luxuries. They’re mandatory, or I stop being able to function in this world at all.

Here’s the fear that sits in the back of my head. As she gets older, will she wonder why her dad needs time alone. Will she think I’m missing pivotal moments. Will she feel like I’m too isolated, too distant, and somehow connect that to not being loved enough.

I know the bar my parents set was low. Surpassing it shouldn’t be hard. But that fear doesn’t fully care about logic. It just sits there anyway.

What I do believe is that with the right tools, real balance, and ongoing therapy, I can make this work. I’ll have bad days, that’s inevitable. But if I keep the communication open, something my own parents never did, that’s what will actually carry us through the parts that are hard to explain to a kid.

When I picture finally having that honest conversation with her someday, I don’t need her to fully understand the clinical side of it. I just want her to walk away knowing that even when dad needs time alone, he still loves her. That the alone time was never about her. It was about making sure I could keep showing up for her without breaking.

Practically, that looks like trying to time my isolation during the hours she’s at school or busy with her own activities, so when she’s home, I can actually be present. Family dinners matter deeply to me, because my own family rarely had them, and I want something different for her. I want to give her the version of presence I never got to have.

She is the best part of my life. Her huge smile when she wakes up and sees me. The hugs she gives now. Her imagination, her curiosity, all of it. That alone gives me energy I didn’t know I had access to before her.

I don’t know if I’m the perfect parent for what she needs. I don’t think anyone does. But I know I’m trying, honestly, openly, and with a level of self awareness my own childhood never gave me the chance to develop. That has to count for something.

I hope, more than anything, that it does.

Thanks for reading! I played a lot of sports, hockey, baseball, track, did martial arts, all the things a kid is supposed to do to fit in, and I was good at blending. A chameleon of sorts. But some kids still suspected something was off. Full masking all the time isn’t actually possible, especially on sleepovers or out of state tournaments where the cracks show whether you want them to or not.

What I did have, easily, without even trying, was adults.

Thanks for reading! Cousins ten plus years older than me. It came so naturally I could never explain why. Looking back now, I think it was how they made me feel. Seen, in rooms where I could have easily gone unnoticed. I did well in school. Being around adults tended to bring out a better version of me, one that didn’t require the constant performance my peers demanded.

For a long time I thought it was my sexuality. I used it as the explanation for everything, why I felt different, why I didn’t quite fit, why adults understood me more than kids my own age did. Then I came out, and nothing changed. That was the first real sign there was more to the story than I’d been telling myself.

There was more to it too. My parents divorced, and I stepped into a parent role for my younger siblings before I was anywhere near ready for it. Taking them to activities. Helping with homework. All the things, instead of actually getting to have a childhood. Looking back, that probably pushed me toward adults even further. I wasn’t just comfortable around them. I’d already become one, in practice if not in age.

So I spent my childhood feeling older than I was.

Then I turned into an adult and somehow started feeling like I was falling behind everyone else.

It was gradual. Chronic exhaustion I explained away as bad sleep for way longer than I should have. I take care of myself, I work out, I travel, but functioning normally started to feel like it took more out of me than it seemed to take out of anyone else. I needed longer stretches of isolation just to refuel, and that cost me relationships. Friendships drifted because the way I process things is different, and when people don’t understand that, distance creeps in whether either person intends it or not.

Career wise, I was a hard worker. I dove in headfirst and eventually burned out so completely I stepped down from a director role, telling everyone I just wasn’t ready yet, still too young. That wasn’t true. I was exhausted in a way I didn’t have language for at the time, watching people my age hungry for the exact position I was walking away from. It made me feel behind. Like I wasn’t doing what an adult my age was supposed to be doing.

Friendship became its own kind of ache. In my thirties it’s genuinely hard to build anything deep. I crave real connection, but I’ve also learned solitude is something I actually need, and those two things sit in constant tension. Last year I started going to a yoga class specifically to push myself out of my comfort zone, because that’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Eight months in, I hadn’t made a single real friend. There was one person I talked to more than surface level, but it never went further, and I still don’t know if that was on me, on them, or somewhere in between. I tend to put in effort early, and when it isn’t matched, I quietly disappear.

What gets me most is watching how easily other adults seem to do the things I have to consciously prepare for. Small talk at a coffee shop. Striking up a conversation without a mental run up first. Even with close friends I still hold a small piece of the mask, still monitor whether I’m fitting in or saying the wrong thing. Sometimes people laugh it off, oh you’re just quirky. Sometimes I can feel something shift, and my RSD goes into overdrive trying to figure out what I did wrong. Somewhere along the way I learned to avoid eye contact. Part of it is self protection, it keeps people comfortably at arm’s length. But if I’m honest, it’s more than that. Eye contact makes me feel exposed, like there’s nowhere left to hide once someone is actually looking at me. Ironically, part of me wishes I could just make the eye contact, smile, be natural, without that gut clench of vulnerability and second guessing underneath it.

I spent my childhood feeling like I understood things other kids didn’t. Now I spend a lot of adulthood wondering why the thing everyone else seems to do without thinking takes everything I have.

Maybe it was never about falling behind. Maybe my attention, and my energy, has just always been pointed somewhere different than everyone else’s. As a kid it pointed toward adults. As an adult it’s pointed toward surviving in a world that was never really built for how my brain works.

The age never really mattered. It was always about where I was looking.

Thanks for reading! Before.

That’s the part most people don’t understand about how my brain works. Long before an event actually happens, I’m already living inside it. Running scenarios. What topics will come up. What I’ll say. How I’ll say it. Whether I’ll come across too blunt or not engaged enough. Whether I’ll laugh at the right moment. This happens for everything, work meetings, get togethers with friends, even a simple trip to the coffee shop I go to all the time. My brain doesn’t distinguish between low and high stakes the way it probably should.

By the time the actual event starts, I’ve already spent days exhausting myself over something that hasn’t even happened yet.

I have a limited battery. That’s the best way I can explain it. Most people operate on autopilot in social situations. Small talk happens, reactions happen, none of it requires much conscious effort. I don’t have that. I have a manual mode running constantly in the background. Reading the room. Assessing someone’s mood. Making sure I look like I’m fitting in. Laughing when everyone else laughs. None of that is automatic for me. Every single piece of it pulls from a battery that was already low before I walked in the door.

The more comfortable I am with someone, the less that battery drains. The less comfortable, the faster I hit empty.

And once I hit empty, something strange happens. I stop caring. The machine just shuts off. Part of me is relieved when that happens, the ruminating finally stops. But if I don’t actually deal with what caused it, that unprocessed stuff doesn’t just disappear. It follows me into the next event, and the one after that, like baggage from an old trip I never fully unpacked.

Afterward comes the replay. For a long time this could last for days. What did I say. How did it land. Did I come across wrong. Around and around, long after the event is over and everyone else has moved on with their lives.

What’s helped is learning to actually name it instead of just spinning in it. I talk to my spouse now about what I’m feeling and thinking, who helps pull me back into reality when my nervous system doesn’t want to let go. I’m also learning to just feel the wave instead of getting pulled under by it. Not suppressing it, not drowning in it, just letting it move through and out.

The bigger work has been boundaries. Learning that I don’t have to say yes to everything just to avoid disappointing someone. Learning that protecting my battery matters more than people pleasing at my own expense.

If there’s one thing I wish people understood, it’s this. It’s not that I don’t want to be there. It’s not that I don’t care. It’s that showing up costs me something most people never have to think about, and recovering from it costs even more. The exhaustion isn’t dramatic or visible. It’s just quietly running in the background, long before the party starts and long after it ends.

Thanks for reading! What I got instead felt like skepticism. Looking back now, I don’t think it actually was. I think it was more a lack of knowledge, the different levels of autism, what late diagnosis actually looks like, how elite masking can completely fool the people closest to you, even a therapist I’d worked with for years on childhood stuff.

Thanks for reading! All I felt was the sting, real time, in my body. I made it through the session, but I left it knowing two things. My needs were changing, and I’d need to find someone more experienced in late diagnosed AuDHD. I ruminated on that moment for a while afterward. It still stings a little even now.

But I don’t think my therapist came from a bad place. I think they just didn’t have the knowledge yet, and there’s something I can actually respect in someone being honest about not knowing instead of pretending they do. That work we did together mattered. It got me through real childhood stuff. I’ll always be grateful for that, even as I move forward with someone new.

That sting, though, the one that happened in that session, has a name. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria.

I didn’t always have the language for it, but I’ve been living with it my whole life.

Growing up as a gay male, I was hiding myself before I even understood why. I played hockey, did martial arts, ran long distance. A guy’s guy, on the outside. But I always felt like I needed to disappear into that version of myself, because the world around me made it clear, slowly and constantly, that who I actually was wouldn’t be fully accepted. That was its own slow burn of rejection, every single day, long before I had a diagnosis to explain any of it.

I also grew up with a dad who struggled with substance abuse. I used to think the hyper awareness I developed from that was a strength. Now I understand it was exhaustion. My nervous system never got to fully rest. It was always scanning, always bracing.

I didn’t know any of this was neurodivergence. I just knew I felt things deeper than everyone else seemed to, and that feeling that deeply made me want to hide.

In high school I was placed in a class with a few kids who used to bully me. I didn’t confront it. I went straight to the counselor and had my schedule changed so I never had to see them again. That was the pattern for most of my life. Shut down. Avoid. Disappear from the situation entirely rather than risk feeling that sting again. I built confidence and capability in the shadows, constructing who I was behind the scenes because front and center never felt safe.

Getting my AuDHD diagnosis didn’t erase any of that history. But it gave me something I never had before. A name for it.

Now when that feeling rises, I can catch it faster. I can say, this is RSD, not a fact about me. I let myself feel it instead of resisting it, and then I remind myself, this isn’t me, it’s a feeling passing through me. What someone says about me says more about them than it does about me. That single shift, separating the feeling from my identity, has changed everything.

It used to paralyze me for days. Now it passes so much quicker.

That sting still shows up in other places too. A stranger on Reddit once called one of my posts AI spam, and it knocked the wind out of me for a second, even though logically I knew it shouldn’t. One comment against thousands of people who felt something real from what I wrote. But in that moment I reminded myself why I started posting in the first place. Not for the validation of every single person who reads it, but to process my own diagnosis out loud, to hear other people’s experiences, to create a space where someone else might feel less alone, even if I’m not part of every conversation that happens because of it.

If you’re someone who feels rejection like a tidal wave, who shuts down or disappears rather than risk the sting again, I want you to know that none of that means you’re too sensitive or too much. It means your nervous system learned early that disappearing was safer than being seen.

But you don’t have to keep disappearing.

Name the feeling. Let yourself feel it without drowning in it. And remind yourself, over and over if you have to, that it isn’t you. It’s just passing through.

Thanks for reading! Mirroring people, laughing when they laughed without really knowing why, never fully understanding what I was supposed to be picking up on. One on one friendships were always easier for me, especially the deep ones, the ones that went beyond surface level small talk. I craved that depth. I still do.

But I also have to take ownership of something. I didn’t realize how much decompression time I actually needed. Looking back, that probably meant I didn’t reach out as often as I should have either. This wasn’t only happening to me. I was part of the pattern too.

Since my diagnosis I’ve become a lot more protective of my energy. I’ve quietly let go of some friendships, mostly the surface level ones, the ones that drained my battery without ever recharging it. I haven’t told most people in my life about being AuDHD yet. Right now my priority is avoiding burnout, processing everything I’m learning about myself, and pouring into the relationships that actually pour back.

There’s one friendship in particular that taught me this lesson clearly. Someone I’d known since childhood. For years I assumed that history meant we were close. But when I actually looked at it honestly, it was surface. One sided. We were just at different points in our lives and I think some part of me always knew it.

There was no fight. No falling out. I just stopped reaching out as much, and when I did, the silence on the other end told me everything I needed to know. The friendship didn’t end. It just ran its course. That’s sad in its own quiet way, but it’s also okay. The energy I used to pour into that relationship, I’m finally pouring back into myself.

If I could say one thing to anyone realizing the same thing about their own friendships, it would be this.

Take time to actually evaluate them. Ask yourself if they’re fulfilling, or if you’re just showing up because the relationship feels familiar. If you’re unsure, sit with it. Watch it. Energy you give out for free without anything coming back is worth re-evaluating.

You deserve friends who pour back into your cup. People who accept you as you are and support your journey. But it can’t be one sided either. You have to pour into theirs too. Think of it as meeting someone halfway.

Because once you find your people, the ones who actually meet you there, something shifts. You start unmasking more freely. Not because you have to perform less for them, but because you finally don’t need to.

Thanks for reading! Not dramatically. Not in a way anyone would notice. Just quietly, steadily, losing myself underneath all of it.

I didn’t understand why. I just knew something felt off. Something always felt off.

Looking back now I can see it for what it was. A cascade. A slow trickle that built up over years, from childhood into young adulthood, until one day I looked around at my life and didn’t recognize myself in it.

Did I actually like these things? Did I choose this career for me or because it made sense to everyone else? Were these friendships real or were they just me mirroring whoever I was around, adopting their interests, their humor, their way of moving through the world, just to be accepted?

The answer, I think, was mostly the latter.

I climbed. I performed. I said yes when every part of me wanted to say no. And I was good at it. Good enough that people trusted me, relied on me, celebrated me. Accomplishments stacked up. On paper everything looked great.

And the whole time I felt like a complete fraud.

Not because I wasn’t capable. But because none of it was really mine. It was built on a version of me that I had constructed for everyone else. The imposter syndrome wasn’t in my head. It was my gut telling me the truth.

The people pleasing mask did everything for everyone else but me.

Getting my AuDHD diagnosis at 32 started to explain why. The masking, the mirroring, the constant reading of rooms and adjusting and performing just to feel safe and accepted. It wasn’t a character flaw. It was survival. My nervous system doing the only thing it knew how to do in a world that never quite fit.

But survival has a cost.

Now I’m learning to say no. And it still feels like being an asshole every single time. But I’m reminding myself that this is the work. Slowly peeling back the masks, one at a time, to find out who’s actually underneath.

I’m starting therapy this month with someone who specializes in late diagnosed AuDHD. I scaled back at work. I’m giving myself permission to just be without performing it.

And if I could say one thing to anyone still deep in the people pleasing cycle, diagnosed or not, it would be this.

Pause. Find solitude. Spend time alone with yourself. For me it’s the quiet after the gym, a latte in the stillness before the day takes over. That small window before the chaos, before the performing starts, is the first time I ever really felt like myself. Start there. Then explore. Figure out what you actually like, what actually fills you up, not what you think you should like based on everyone around you.

And I truly believe that once you find a strong sense of self, everything else slowly starts to fall into place.

Thanks for reading! If anything, that day felt more like numbness. Shock, maybe. I sat with the weight of it, not quite knowing what to do with it. My spouse was steady beside me and a few late diagnosed creators online made me feel less alone in ways I still can’t fully explain. That helped me stay level.

The grief came later. Slowly. As I started looking back.

I started remembering moments from childhood. Group settings where everyone seemed to be laughing at something I had completely missed. I would mirror them, smile when they smiled, laugh when they laughed, with absolutely no idea why. I always felt like I was missing a manual everyone else had already received. Like a puzzle piece that never quite fit anywhere.

I thought it was just me. I thought I was just weird.

Looking back now I can see it for what it was. Masking. Surviving. Getting through the day without anyone noticing the gap between who I was and who I was performing to be.

And that’s where the grief lives. In the gap.

I think about the connections I never quite made on a deep level. Even surface level felt unnatural at times. Eye contact in social situations was something I avoided, almost as a way of protecting myself from the small talk I never knew how to navigate. So I kept people at a distance without fully understanding why.

I think about the version of me that climbed all the way to Senior Director in my career, driven by perfectionism and hyperfocus, only to realize two months in that I never actually wanted it. I was burnt out before I even got there. I stepped down. It was the right call. It was also one of the hardest things I’ve done.

I think about what could have been different with the right tools. The right support. The right understanding of my own brain.

Some days the grief wins. Some days the gratitude does.

Because alongside the grief there is this: I finally have the key. I know now why the puzzle piece never fit. And instead of forcing it into the wrong space I’m slowly learning to find where it actually belongs.

I finally found a therapist with experience in late diagnosed AuDHD and I’m looking forward to getting started this month.

I’m scaling back at work, moving from five days to four, giving my nervous system one extra day to breathe. Small changes. Intentional ones.

My goal isn’t to fix myself. My brain doesn’t need fixing. My goal is to show up. For my 15 month old. For my spouse. For myself. Without the mask, as much as possible, so I can actually fill the tank back up and find out what enjoying life really feels like when you’re not performing it.

The grief is real. And it deserves to be felt.

But so does everything that comes next.

Thanks for reading! Needs to know what’s coming. Has the gym scheduled at exactly 3:30am and would like everything to go exactly as planned, every single day, forever. When plans change without warning? Full system alert. When something doesn’t go as expected? The waves start building 😩

Roommate Two, ADHD:

Thought the routine was great. For about four days. Now? Bored. Desperately bored. Routine is the enemy. Novelty is oxygen. Currently eyeing the nearest table to flip just to feel something different 😂

The problem is they share one skull.

And they cannot agree on anything.

Autism says: “We have a system. The system works. Do not touch the system.”

ADHD says: “The system is boring and I’ve already started three new projects and forgot to eat and also why are we still talking about the system??”

The negotiation is constant. Exhausting. And invisible to everyone around me.

In public or at work, when the tidal waves are crashing internally, I avoid eye contact and mask calmness just long enough to escape. Nobody around me would ever know. That’s the thing about masking, you get very good at performing fine while everything inside is anything but.

Recently I had a week where both roommates were fighting at full volume. An adoption finalization, a work recording, a major life decision, a new blog launch, all at once. I was so fixated on one thing I had a hard time navigating all of it simultaneously. The internal chaos was relentless. When overstimulation hits an all time high, my nervous system shuts down entirely. Both roommates completely losing it.

And then comes the ceiling stare.

Functional freeze. The system buffering. The battery near drained. In those moments I become the observer of both roommates, not participating, just watching. Waiting for the reboot. It’s not laziness. It’s not weakness. It’s a nervous system doing the only thing it knows how to do when capacity has been exceeded.

Getting my Level 1 Autism diagnosis at 32, on top of my ADHD, changed something. Not everything. But something.

Now when it’s happening, the overstimulation, the flood of emotions, the two roommates screaming, I can identify it. Name it. That alone has helped more than I expected.

I still struggle. Honestly since my diagnosis I’ve felt some type of regression, like finally having the language has also meant finally feeling the weight of it all. Navigating uncharted waters. But even then something still felt missing. So I kept moving forward, quietly carrying that feeling, filing it away, masking without even knowing that’s what I was doing.

Fast forward to 32. I received my Level 1 Autism diagnosis.

The feeling wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t clean or simple. It was anxiety, overwhelm, and loneliness all arriving at once. But underneath all of that was something else entirely.

Finally being understood.

It felt like receiving a key to a door I always knew was there but never knew what was behind it. The door had always existed. I just didn’t have the key.

In the days that followed I tried to process it. It was hard. But I wasn’t completely alone, my spouse was right there, steady and supportive. And then I reached out to a few creators on Instagram who were also late diagnosed and they made me feel less alone in ways I still can’t fully put into words. I’ll never be able to thank them enough for that.

That moment is part of why I’m here now. Writing this. Anonymously. Hoping to be that for someone else.

Because if you’re reading this and you feel like you’ve been missing a manual your whole life, I see you.

You may be different.
