Looking back, I can see all of those things clearly, although at the time I was asleep and unaware.

I was surviving.

Until something slowly shifted.

There was an unease I couldn’t explain. A feeling that something in my life was out of alignment, even though I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. The dissonance slowly began to build until it became harder and harder to ignore.

It was discomfort that I felt.

It was anxiety, it was frustration and anger.

It was thoughts that consumed me that I could not control.

Then the discomfort became more regular. I couldn’t stay quiet anymore. I kept pushing but things were not moving. I felt like I was trying to paddle upstream with no success and only exhausted at the forcing.

Until that point, I would “go with the flow”, or so I thought, but looking back, I see something different.

I wasn’t going with my flow. I was going with everyone else’s to avoid friction. It was easier to abandon my own needs than risk disappointing someone else.

The hardest part is that I wasn’t even aware I was doing it. I hadn’t yet woken up to the possibility that I wanted something different.

I kept adding things to my life that I thought would finally make everything fit. My backpack kept getting heavier.

More training.

More degrees.

More knowledge.

More jobs.

More responsibility.

More distraction.

I was asleep to myself.

The more I added, the quieter my own voice became. I stayed in places, jobs and relationships because I was afraid to leave, afraid to disappoint someone or maybe I felt like I was disappointing myself.

Or I felt I needed all these things, I needed to keep climbing , to try harder. I wasn’t a quitter. I was going to make it right. But right isn’t always better.

Then it all crumbled.

The mountain I spent half my life climbing wasn’t what I wanted all along. All the fighting against myself and supporting those around me for what I thought I needed, was all wrong.

If you enjoy my work consider becoming a paid subscriber to support my publication.

I know now that it wasn’t all wrong, that those things had to happen to bring me to where I am now.

I know this was my quest, my path, the ultimate way back to myself.

The wake up was not pretty. Honestly, it felt like waking from hyper-sleep after a twenty-year journey through space.

It was disorienting.

It was slow.

It was confusing.

I had been asleep for 20 years and I had to remember who I was and it took some time to become acquainted with myself, to trust myself and stop fighting against her.

Little by little, the fog began to lift and I realized I had needs. I had wants and desires that had been there all along.

I had simply forgotten to listen.

We know now that the menopausal transition isn’t just hormonal. It’s neurological too. Our brains are adapting. Neural pathways are changing. Plasticity increases. In many ways, it’s another major developmental transition, much like puberty.

I can’t help but wonder if those biological changes are happening at the exact same time many of us begin questioning our identities, our relationships, our work, and the lives we’ve built. I hypothesize this is the perfect opportunity for our neuronal pathways to redistribute and re-route in ways that allow us to expand our consciousness to new possibilities and clarity that was not visible in our pre-menopausal time frame.

While I was in the process of finishing this essay this morning, the Matrix came to me as I was meditating. There is the moment when Neo finally sees the code. When suddenly he sees everything differently. When he stops fighting so hard and everything becomes easier. When he starts trusting himself. That is what this season has felt like for me. I certainly don’t feel like everything is always easier these days, but things seem much clearer. I can see the patterns that have been quietly running my life all along. Once I saw them, I couldn’t unsee them.

I have not arrived, but I have finally woken up.

The waking up is the starting point and I am now on this beautiful journey back to myself.

Thank you for reading! you’ve experienced your own wakeup, I’d genuinely love to hear about it.

Was there one defining moment?

Or was it, like me, an accumulation of small moments that slowly became A moment when you suddenly realize you’ve crossed the border into the midlife territory?

Lately, I’ve started thinking that midlife feels less like an identity and more like a destination. The funny thing is, I don’t think I realized I’d arrived until after I’d already been living there.

Looking back, I can see the initiation had already begun in my early 40s, when perimenopause had started asking for my attention. My body was asking me to slow down in ways I wasn’t ready to hear and at 43 I had already made one of the hardest decisions of my life by walking away from a relationship that had spanned nearly ten years. I moved my entire life into a new home and then, at 44, I was diagnosed with ADHD, finally giving language to parts of myself I had never understood.

And yet somehow…

I still didn’t realize I was in midlife. That realization came on my forty-fifth birthday.

My son looked at me and casually said,

“Mom… you’ve probably lived more than half your life.”

At first I laughed.

Then, almost immediately, I didn’t.

Something about hearing those words from my twelve-year-old stopped me in my tracks. Somehow he could see something I hadn’t allowed myself to notice.

I remember thinking, Is this what midlife is?

There was grief, but also shock and honestly, a little embarrassment that I didn’t even know where I was in my own life. It felt as though I had arrived at a destination I had never bought a ticket or packed a bag for.

I felt late to my own party.

As I continued reflecting, I realized I had actually been feeling different since my late thirties. Working in medicine for nearly two decades and specifically with women navigating menopause, I understood this season intellectually.

But knowing about something and living it are two very different experiences.

Looking back, I realize I had become so focused on everyone else, my son, my family, my patients, my relationships, that I had almost stopped noticing myself. I wasn’t paying attention to what I needed, or even where I was in my own life.

I was so disconnected from myself, perhaps after years of masking, that I’m not sure I could have told you who I was outside of my roles.

I was a doctor.

A mother.

A daughter.

A partner.

Those roles felt like my purpose.

But were they?

Somewhere along the way, I think I learned that having needs was selfish. That my role as the helper, the healer, meant my own needs came last. Somewhere in the process of caring for everyone else, I quietly disappeared.

As I’ve settled into the last several months as an initiated “midlifer”, something unexpected has happened.

I feel more at home with myself. Not because I’ve figured everything out, but because I’m finally getting to know the person I’ve been with all along. I’m learning to hear my own voice underneath years of responsibilities, expectations, and silence.

For me, perimenopause was the first crack in the door. It was the moment my body started speaking louder than the rest of the world. My body started telling me I had needs.

It needed rest.

It needed water.

It needed boundaries.

It needed me to stop abandoning myself.

For years, I had been able to override those messages. Suddenly, I couldn’t anymore and my body refused to let me keep living on breadcrumbs.

Once I started listening, the changes didn’t stay internal. They began showing up in my decisions. I started making decisions the younger version of me wouldn’t have believed I was capable of making.

It was terrifying.

But eventually something shifted. The discomfort of staying the same became greater than the fear of changing. I sum it up as having less fucks left to give.

I think of the equation as something like this: my needs > fear + less fucks = change

It wasn’t that I cared any less about the people I love, my son, my family, my patients, or the people in my life. I had simply realized that I was important too. My needs had been waiting long enough.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Not optimization. Not becoming “better.”

But becoming real.

For so many women, life begins with performance.

We learn early who we should be.
The good girl.
The achiever.
The caretaker.
The strong one.
The beautiful one.
The easy one.
The selfless one.

We absorb expectations from everywhere, our family, culture, relationships, careers, motherhood, society. We learn to shape ourselves into versions that are lovable, successful, acceptable, and needed.

And somewhere along the way, many of us lose touch with the girl underneath it all.

The girl who was imaginative.
Creative.
Wild.
Sensitive.
Curious.
Alive.

Before she learned she had to earn her worth.

Before she believed she had to become something in order to be enough.

So we build lives. Careers. Families. Relationships. Routines. We carry the invisible emotional weight of everyone around us while trying to keep all the pieces together.

And for a long time, we can.

Until one day, we can’t anymore.

Maybe it begins in perimenopause.
Maybe with burnout.
Divorce.
Loss.
Exhaustion.
A health crisis.
A quiet feeling that the life you built no longer fits.

Your body changes. Your beliefs change. Your tolerance changes.

You no longer have the capacity to hold everything the way you once did.

At first, it feels terrifying and you wonder what’s wrong with you.

Why you can’t push through anymore.
Why you’re forgetting things.
Why you suddenly feel emotional, angry, restless, disconnected, exhausted.
Why the things that once mattered no longer seem important.
Why the roles you played so well suddenly feel unbearable.

And beneath all of it is grief. Grief for the version of yourself you thought you had to be.

Grief for the years spent performing.
Grief for the dreams that got buried.
Grief for the creativity that got silenced.
Grief for how far you drifted from yourself while trying to hold everyone else together.

But eventually, if you allow it, something else begins to emerge.

Relief.

Because the masks are heavy.

And when they begin to crack, something honest starts breathing underneath them.

You start disappointing people.
You stop over performing.
You stop shape-shifting quite as much.
You begin saying no.
You begin listening to yourself.

<a class="image-link image2 Maybe it was all of those things.

But what I know now is that something in me was asking for change.

Or maybe demanding it.

My body wasn’t responding the way it used to.

My brain wasn’t responding the way it used to.

The things I once thought brought me joy no longer did.

Relationships that once felt comfortable didn’t feel the same anymore.

I suddenly had opinions I hadn’t allowed myself to have.

I couldn’t tolerate the same old patterns anymore.

And honestly? That was scary.

Because when the masks start coming off, you don’t immediately know who you are underneath them.

For years I had spent my life caring for others.

As a doctor, that became my role.

Listen.

Help.

Accommodate.

Support.

Take care of everyone else.

And somewhere along the way, I became very disconnected from myself.

Then life slowed me down. I lost a job that had consumed me. My son was diagnosed with ADHD. Later, I realized I had ADHD too.

And that diagnosis became one of the biggest unmasking moments of my life.

There was relief, but there was also grief. Grief for the younger version of me who spent years trying to fit into spaces that never felt quite natural. Grief for the years spent believing I simply needed to try harder.

And then slowly, something shifted. I stopped trying so hard to fix myself.

Instead, I started listening.

Walking more.

Reading more.

Thinking more.

Paying attention.

Getting curious.

And I began asking questions I hadn’t asked myself in years:

What do I enjoy?

What do I need?

Who am I underneath all of this?

I created Unmasked Midlife because I suspect many women are standing in this same place.

Feeling exposed.

Feeling different.

Feeling like they don’t recognize themselves anymore.

Wanting answers.

Wanting to fix themselves.

Wanting to go back.

But maybe this season isn’t asking us to become someone else.

Maybe it’s asking us to stop hiding.

Maybe it’s asking us to allow ourselves.

Maybe this isn’t about fixing ourselves, but instead about remembering who we’ve been all along.

Welcome to this space and let’s unfold and unmask together.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
