In this week’s Uptime Wind Energy Podcast, Rosemary and Yolanda discussed how India’s new requirements to control operational and R&D data and keeping it inside the country’s borders may affect India’s energy sector - and the industry as a whole. They also discussed how Envision’s spare parts push across Southeast Asia is going, and why Danish energy employment is in a good news/bad news situation.

But before we get down to the business of the wind business, let’s have a physics lesson. Today’s topic, reverse flow loads in parked blades, flies in the face of the industry’s conventional understanding. Tune in as we explain the new research findings and where we’ve seen reverse flow in the field.

Don’t Stall

Stopping and even locking turbine rotors during storms has long been common practice, but findings by researchers at DNV, Research Center for Energy Conversion Technology, and others could put an end to that. The paper, Dynamic stall modeling of a wind turbine airfoil at various stall-induced vibration zones, published in March, shows that reverse flow, even at low wind speeds, can severely compromise blades.

The researchers explain that “the stability and structural integrity of a large wind turbine [is adversely affected by] pressure gradients, separation bubbles, and reverse vortex shedding patterns.” A link to the original research is below, and if you read it, you’ll probably gain a better understanding of dynamic stalls. But it may be more helpful to listen as Rosemary and Yolanda describe it as engineers who have seen it - or the results of it - in real wind applications.

India: New Data Protection Rules in Effect

In India, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has implemented new rules for every wind turbine maker on the approved list of manufacturers to report where its data actually lives. From now on, it needs to live in India.

The Ministry’s order applies to all data centers, servers, and research centers in India – and no data is to leave the country in realtime.

The order made news because it was a comprehensive action, with a tight implementation schedule – but it wasn’t exactly unexpected. Controlling data is something every major country and region in the world has considered or is grappling with now. Sharing technology and information, however, is how industries advance and grow.

While the business and energy world will be watching India, it’s important to remember that the country has vast engineering experience and a solid manufacturing base on which to build its wind energy silo – something few countries can claim on their own. Also, as Rosemary points out, India has a unique wind environment. Like Australia, the country experiences a specific set of wind issues, so perhaps a few years of siloing will strengthen its focus on solving those. But what if other major manufacturing countries follow suit? How much could that slow down the industry’s current growth?

India locks down data, what does this mean for the industry?

In China, turbine manufacturers are building a network to keep their machines running

Envision Energy has secured its largest wind project in Vietnam- a 200MW nearshore project with REE Energy. Grid connection is expected by October 2027.

Meanwhile, in Batangas, Philippines, the company has opened a 1,500sf distribution center to warehouse major components and spare parts close to the projects that need them - a key factor in maintaining consistent performance.

Medium-speed Compact Drives for Mountaintops

Also happening in China: Mingyang Smart Energy’s new Tianchi MCD 5 MW turbine is the first of the company’s new medium-speed compact drive platform that Mingyang says cuts component count by 60%. It’s also designed to go where most turbines don’t: mountains and other places with “less than ideal” wind conditions.

Rosemary and Yolanda aren’t convinced Mingyang has all the details worked out - transportation could be a big issue, and as Yolanda says, “lightning could be a nightmare” in those not-quite-ideal locations. But, it sure is an interesting product strategy, and one that’s off to a great start.

Denmark’s Job Numbers Tell (at least) Two Stories

Green Power Denmark said with almost 110,000 full-time jobs across the entire Danish energy sector in 2025, it was up about 1.4%, and slightly ahead of Danish employment overall. That’s the good news. However, inside the wind sector, employment fell.

Green Power Denmark called the drop normal. It attributed the drop - to 32,700, a loss of about 500 jobs - to international competition and unfavorable market conditions.

Our team lamented the loss of wind jobs, but noted that much of the rest of the world would be glad to add some of that Danish experience to their teams. (Related: Rosemary is hiring a blades specialist!)

What Hot Topics Can You Expect at WOMA?

Pressing issues that many of the wind professionals we met with want to explore in depth at WOMA in February include:

• Performance upgrades

  • Finding the 1% shouldn’t be hard; finding 2-3% should actually be accessible. But every efficiency is multifactorial, and each is influenced by maintenance, equipment age, and yes, we’ll say it - contractual issues.

  • Related: we’re interested in bringing in a legal and/or insurance resource to the conference. Who would you like to see there in February? Let us know!

• Terminations of cables

  • This one surfaced with a variety of specific questions. It’s clear that we will address some of those at WOMA. If you are someone - or you know someone -who has expertise in safely connecting power or control cables to switchgears, transformers, or junction boxes, please get in touch!

• Extending the lifetime of blades and other equipment - and what to do about end of lifecycle issues

  • Extending the life of foundations came up more than once, and it surprised our hosts a bit - we’ll want to cover that. And also, BOLTS. They may not be sexy, but they deserve a little love at this conference.

  • What specific issues are you having with bolts? Let us know! Your solution might already be available - that’s one of the great things about a conference hosted in Australia: different people show up, with solutions you might not find otherwise!

• What about OEM involvement? We hear you!

  • As a global conference - that just happens to be held in Australia - we see attendees from all over Europe, Australia of course, some from North America, and this year, we’re also expecting more folks representing from Southeast Asia. And maybe even China? Possibly including an OEM?

“Remarkable” Increase for Vestas

Vestas’ second quarter profits were so good, the company raised its profit guidance and issued an additional stock buyback. But it’s not just the stock price that people are talking about. Among other things, Matthew noted onshore installations in Denmark don’t look good; he suggested that the wind turbine manufacturer might want to take (better) care of business close to home. Meanwhile, Allen wondered if the company might be planning to make a play for US market.

The discussion that followed touched on some of our engineer’s favorite topics - like how continuous improvement doesn’t necessarily mean continuously releasing new models, as each new model can introduce new incompatibilities, or worse.

Where in the World are Our Hosts?

As the podcast aired this week, our team was in Australia visiting with owners/operators and others in the industry to help set the agenda for WOMA 2027. Our hosts traveled halfway around the world (again) to find out what’s most critical for the upcoming conference to address. We’re anticipating a sold-out conference. Is a Wind Turbine a Movable Good? (asking for tax purposes)

Is a wind turbine that is bolted to a concrete foundation movable goods, or is it immovable property? In India, state tax authorities argued that it is immovable, which would have taxed erection and commissioning contracts at 18% instead of five. The Andhra Pradesh High Court disagreed with the tax authorities, and the Supreme Court declined to interfere.

It is reasoned that the Supreme Court decided not to get involved because - and this is something that the whole industry takes for granted - a turbine can be taken down, moved, and put back up. The Court of Uptime agreed with that determination - and also agreed that the conversation about wind energy and taxation is far from over.

Factory Blocked in Scotland, Door Open in Denmark

In Scotland, the UK Government blocked plans for Ming Yang to build a turbine factory at Ardesier near Inverness, due to national security concerns. First Minister John Swinney - no doubt thinking of the ￡1.5B investment, and 1,500 or so jobs - asked the new Prime Minister to reconsider. Then the UK Energy Security Minister called that request irresponsible.

Meanwhile in Denmark, Vattenfall, which has won two offshore wind farms, will not say whether it will buy European turbines. Our team’s discussion, not surprisingly, focused more on the ramifications (potential advantages?) of technology sharing rather than on the politics of working with Chinese manufacturers.

ORE Catapult wants your blade failure data

Finally, someone is trying to get ahead of blade failures before they cost you money. And it’s ORE Catapult, so you know they know what to do with the data once they get it. So now, it’s up to you.

The survey captures information about damage mechanisms from engineers, operators, asset owners and other technical specialists to inform research priorities.

The survey takes about five minutes to complete. Please share what you know! And then, share it with someone else in the industry. The more data, the better.

What kind of data is being collected?

The survey asks questions about critical problems we all face: leading edge erosion, torsional loads, root joint integrity, lightning damage, manufacturing defects, extreme loading events, repair performance, and end of life fatigue.

Yolanda notes that some of the questions allow respondents to anonymize their data, and Matthew adds, anecdotally, that blade twist seems to be a bigger problem than expected - at least based on what he’s been hearing. The bottom line:

The more data shared, the better. Please share what you know here!

Siemens aims to put serial defects in the past

Siemens Gamesa (um, Omterra now) is still climbing out of the hole left by blade issues with its 5x platforms - but there’s progress, with the company posting its first profitable quarter since 2022. While approval processes are delaying some 5x orders, the successor to the 4x platform is currently selling in higher numbers.

Breakeven is still expected at the end of the financial year, against a loss of €15M across the first three quarters. Is this the beginning of the end of the long, sad saga? Our hosts discuss…

…and while they didn’t discuss it this week, expect to hear more good news, soon, for example - Nordex recently confirmed that it signed contracts in the US for the delivery of 81 N163/5.X turbines. Production for the new orders will take place at the Nordex plant in Iowa.

Meanwhile, in Denmark, they may be asking -

What’s better? Global competition or supporting local manufacturing?

In Denmark, they may be trying to strike a balance.

Of the seven bids that the government saw in its latest offshore tender, Swedish utility Vattenfall won both of projects on offer. One, at North Sea Mid, was for 1,000MW, and the other, for at least 800MW, will be built at Hesselo in the Kattegat.

The Danish Chamber of Commerce said the two farms could trigger €6.3B in investment and 35,000 full-time jobs. Ørsted confirms it bid (and lost) and said it will continue to prioritize value over volume.

Rosemary says it’s a matter of trust - that the Denmark government, in particular, keeps the country’s trust by playing fair. But it’s fair to ask, what about supporting the local economy? Noise wasn’t exactly the reason a wind project at Kelsey Creek (Queensland) was cut in half, but it may have been a factor.

How Did That Blade End Up in the North Sea?

On July 22nd, a Vestas V236 15MW wind turbine blade failed during construction at EnBW’s 960MW He Dreiht wind farm in the North Sea. Based on photos of debris being recovered by ship, large pieces of the blade were damaged. And, if this sounds familiar, it’s because it is: similar construction-phase blade breaks have occured at Vineyard Wind in the US, at Dogger Bank in the UK, and in China - and we’ll probably see more in the future.

Why?

Good question.

While these similar-sounding incidents could have similar root causes, that may not be the case. “Things break sometimes” is the easy answer. The more difficult truth is that it’s really hard to design for every conceivable circumstance (including bad luck) -and it’s really expensive.

Our team talked through a handful of potential engineering causes for these (and other) pre-commissioning failures, from unexpected aerodynamic wind loading (like unusual, off-axis wind loads, or edgewise/flatwise vibrations) to structural anomalies (manufacturing defects, transit-related damage, or “surprise” real-world behavior that eluded computer modeling).

They also discussed some mitigation concepts that exist - and wondered just how often operators employ those potential solutions. Suzlon on the Rise, with Record First Quarter Deliveries

Happy New (fiscal) Year to Suzlon Energy! The company posted 506MW of wind turbine deliveries for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The Indian company’s revenue for the same quarter is up more than 22%, the equivalent of about $398M.

Matthew said it makes sense for India to be optimistic about the manufacturer’s growth, but the road to continued success is paved with questions, like will Suzlon be welcome to bid on European onshore projects? And what will happen in head-to-head competitions with Chinese manufacturers?

Wood Mackenzie Raises its US Wind Outlook

According to Wood Mackenzie's (revised) five-year Greenfield outlook, things in US wind are looking up, thanks to execution-mode strategies designed to get construction underway under the wire of deadlines imposed by the July 2025 OBBBA.

In 2026, construction starts ran 8% higher than the previous year - almost certainly pushed to meet July’s safe harbor deadline.

Before you say “unintended consequences,” you might want to listen to what our hosts had to say. None of them were really surprised at the firm’s 5% upward revision.

Queensland Wind Project Cut in Half, for Two Reasons (sort of)

After about six months of LIDAR monitoring, Alinta Energy realized the wind resource at Kelsey Creek was not robust enough to support all of the 30 turbines planned for two sites at the MT Challenger Wind Farm in Queensland.

As the data was rolling in, residents were getting riled up: A local action group gathered more than 6,000 signature opposing the project because of noise concerns.

We don’t always help with your math homework, but if you ever wanted to know just how the noise level at your local wind farm compares to freeway traffic and/or a public library, this week’s Uptime episode is for you. 🚛

Is AI’s greatest contribution to the world so far … basically a marketing tool? If you caught this week’s podcast, you know that’s not exactly the consensus of our hosts, but a few somewhat snide comments crept into the conversation as Allen, Matthew, Rosemary and Yolanda discussed the world’s first grid-connected, artificial intelligence wind turbine, now online in Pilbara Australia.

The Envision Energy prototype, installed in Fortescue’s Nullagine Wind Project, used Nabrawind’s self-erecting tower technology. The turbine is 188 meters tall and is managed by Envision’s Dubhe Energy Foundation Model. The company is calling the world’s largest physical AI system.

But what does the lauded AI system really do? Our hosts aren’t convinced that it’s worth its weight in hype.

While AI may commandeer the headlines, our intrepid team pointed out some other important design considerations. Rosemary, for one, was thrilled that the project considered the desert environment in its design, as how heat stresses blades and other components is often ignored - even though it clearly contributes to early material failures.

As Gas Booms and Wind Lags, GE Vernova Raises 2026 Guidance

GE Vernova had a very good second quarter of 2026, with orders of $24.2B (up 88%). The company now has a backlog of $176B, and an almost-unheard-of $5.1B in free cash flow.

The money is being generated from gas power and electrification, however, not from wind. Orders for the company’s wind segment fell 40%, and that segment is expected to lose about $400M this year.

Is there a bright side for Vernova’s wind business? Yes. There are actually two: SunZia, in New Mexico, is now operating. That wind farm, billed as the largest renewable project in US history, is using GE Vernova’s 3.8MW turbines. Also in the good-news-for-GE-Wind column: the company expects its wind segment to break even in Q3 and Q4.

So while the latest earnings call didn’t exactly raise hopes for wind development, elsewhere in the states, there appears to be more appetite for wind.

Exus Renewables North America Secures $356M for Pennsylvania Wind

Exus Renewables North America recently closed approximately $356M in construction financing to repower two Pennsylvania wind projects.

The two projects - Cambria Wind Farm at 61.6MW, and Highland North Wind Farm at 75MW - are both in Cambria County. They’re being repowered with Vestas turbines and are expected to reach commercial operation in September 2026.

Exus CEO Jim Spencer said demand for clean energy from data centers and large corporations is accelerating, and the capital is there for strong developers.

The company is not new to renewables; it already owns more than 306MW of wind capacity in Pennsylvania, including the operating Twin Ridges Wind Farm.

Cadeler’s Wind Orca Hits Ship and Topples Crane at Port of Tyne

On July 19, a massive wind turbine installation vessel collided with a berthed container ship at the Port of Tyne in northeast England. The accident toppled a quayside gantry crane and sent one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cadeler’s Wind Orca is an O-class jack-up vessel, built to install ultra-large offshore turbines. It is one of the largest of its kind, The cause of the collision was not immediately identified. The Orca has been returned to its berth and a full investigation is underway.

Wood Turbine Blades are Easy to Recycle

Last week we noted (again) that Sweetwater, Texas, is (still) grappling with the problem of piles of turbine blades that have not (so far) been recycled by Global Fiberglass Solutions - the company that was contracted to do just that.

Voodin Blade Technology in Germany is working on one solution to the problem - although it’s not a quick fix. Voodin has developed wind turbine blades made from Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL).

The company says the wood-based alternative to conventional fiberglass and carbon-composite blades are strong, lightweight, and fully recyclable. Voodin says its approach cuts capital investment by 54% over traditional blade making.

Now, Voodin has wondered a €48M grant from the European Union to build a commercial factory in norther Spain to make the wooden blades. The factory is expected to open in 2031 and produce up to 160 sets of blades a year - using a mold-free process.

Siemens Energy Rebrands

Siemens Energy and Siemens Renewable Energy has started the transition to a new, independent brand: Omterra. But why walk away from a name like Siemens? Simply because it’s time.

With its spin-off from Siemens AG in 2020, the (then-new) company had a time-limited license agreement governing the use of the Siemens Energy brand.

According to Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch, the timing is good. The company “is well positioned strategically, operationally and financially,” Bruch said, adding that the company has “ambitious growth plans” for the years ahead.

UK Confirms CfD Allocation Round 8 Rules, Holds Price Ceilings

After CfD Round Seven brought in nearly 15GW of new capacity at prices well below the ceilings, the government is betting that stability, not higher limits, will keep the pipeline moving.

In what is expected to be a successful tactic to keep projects on track and “focus on competitive price outcomes,” the UK government announced that maximum strike prices in AR8 will be the same as in AR7. Those prices were (in 2024 dollars), and will remain, £113/MwH for fixed-bottom offshore wind, £271 for floating offshore wind, £92 for onshore wind, and £75 for solar.

But not everything has remained the same: with AR8, rules around connecting to the National Grid are stricter, with a goal of reducing speculative bidding. Only projects that have achieved Gate 2 connections will be eligible to bid in AR8.

We’ll be following up on this, of course - especially about how developers respond to the floating wind price. Floating wind is more attractive as technology improves, but market watchers don’t agree on when it will go mainstream.

Was every wind turbine on earth built wrong? Did MIT just deliver the math to fix it?

Yes, if you believe the hyperbolic headlines, that’s what has happened. The math story and the Betz limit are explained in the journal Nature Communications and in an open-access paper by an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and MIT postdocs (link below).

The Uptime hosts are not fully onboard just yet. “Hilarious” and “so what” were among their initial reactions. Breaking down the research to its math roots, their comments returned to a more typical, insightful engineering discussion. Yes, they agreed, a review of aerodynamics is never a bad idea. But here’s an even better idea: take the researchers out of the lab and into the field, to see how those theories perform in the real world.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re here for all the wind turbine performance improvements that are possible. But it’s not possible until it’s proven - and our hosts doubt that there’s enough “new” in the the new math model theory to have “immediate and direct potential for impact across the value chain of wind power,” as the MIT press release promises. Speaking of Math: Goldwind’s Chief Engineer in Denmark says Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Bo Juul Pedersen, Goldwind’s chief engineer in Denmark, has said that scaling turbines up no longer makes economic sense. His reasoning is based on a simple rule of geometry, the square-cube law, which says that as a turbine grows, its material and cost climb faster than the rotor area that earns the revenue. Past a certain point, he says, bigger simply costs more than it makes.

Rosemary, of course - and possibly every operations manager, everywhere - agrees.

While Goldwind has tried to slow the race to build the next biggest-in-the-world turbine, other Chinese manufacturers are ramping up - Dongfang Electric has tested a 26MW machine, only to be out-done by Mingyang’s 50MW, twin-rotor concept.

Texas Judge Orders Blade Recycler to Clean Up Sweetwater

According to a state-filed suit initiated in February, Global Fiberglass Solutions Inc. has been stockpiling wind turbine blades near Sweetwater, Texas, instead of recycling them.

The order bars GFS from accepting more turbine blades at two sites and requires the company to begin dismantling and lawfully disposing of the material. State officials say that more than 3,000 blades and blade parts have piled up at two sites near the west Texas town. The state is seeking civil penalties and lawful removal of the waste.

Vestas Wins METI Backing for Wind Turbine Nacelles in Japan

The Danish turbine giant recently won backing from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, known as METI, to build wind turbine nacelles in the country. It is the second METI award for the plan, following funding in 2021, and is designed to strengthen Japan’s supply chain. The investment is contingent on continued growth of Japan’s offshore wind market and sufficient Vestas order volume for domestic projects. If conditions are met, final nacelle assembly and testing would move to pre-assembly ports serving Japanese offshore wind projects.

Rosemary Barnes returned from attending GWO training, and filled listeners in on what she learned and why she attends the training as often as she does. She also described the blade repair training program she developed and has recently provided for several clients in Australia. More on that below.

Also in the podcast, Allen, Matthew, and Yolanda discuss some of the things they’re curious about as Canada’s plans for the Ocean Lake Wind Project in Nova Scotia unfold. They also spend some time breaking down wake effect, which is at the heart of the Dogger Bank standoff in the UK, where principals have requested (and been granted) a judicial review of the development of neighboring Dogger Bank South Wind Farm. They claim it will “steal” their wind - and there’s some science behind that.

Neighbor Disputes are the Worst

Back in May - after several months of delay - the UK’s Dogger Bank South was granted its Development Consent Order, allowing the project to move forward. The 3GW RWE development will be located just about 50km away from Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which is operated by Equinor. And before you ask, yes, the UK requires wind farms to complete a wake effect plan.

In spite of what RWE calls the government’s “rigorous, transparent examination” of the siting of Dogger Bank South, Equinor, British utility SSE, and Vargronn (the companies behind the 3.6GW Dogger Bank wind farm) say wake effect from Dogger Bank South could cut their output, costing them between €500M-€669M over the life of the project.

Wake effect is better understood (and easier to measure) in the aerospace industry, where some advances have been made, and are regularly used, to mitigate its effects. Still, in both industries, the problem is best described as “complicated.” Our hosts suspect that arriving at an agreeable court-approved financial payout may be easier than solving the physics equation.

A date for the judicial review has not yet been set. Equinor-operated Dogger Bank began producing power in 2023. According to the Dogger Bank South project page, RWE and development partner Masdar will make a final investment decision in 2027. Catch the full discussion here 🎧.

PES Exclusive: Truly Portable Hydraulic Tools

If your techs’ tools don’t work uptower, there’s no reason to carry them along. The LU-Series was designed with direct feedback from wind technicians. (The upward facing gauge is just one feature a wind tech can appreciate.) Enerpac Tool Group aimed to simplify the operator experience while maintaining performance, particularly for the intermittent tasks that wind techs so often perform between the “big” jobs. BP has withdrawn from the 450MW Yamagata wind project, for the same reason Mitsubishi walked away from a Japanese project last year. Rising costs, particularly in construction, make massive offshore projects slower to reach profitability. Kansai Electric, Tokyo Gas, and trading house Marubeni remain committed to the project.

Pennsylvania’s Turkey Hill Dairy is retiring its two wind turbines five years earlier than expected. The company has not yet said whether it will replace them, or with what.

Good News? GE Vernova Pours Billions into Struggling LM Wind Power

GE Vernova recently injected 6.15 billion DKK into LM Wind Power - plus two promissory notes worth 3.2 billion DKK.

Is this good news? Probably. Our hosts discuss what’s smart about Vernova’s capital investment - nine years after buying LM - and how the company may grow (?) from here. Our hosts discuss why LM still matters.

Is EDF Sale Great for Competition?

French-owned state utility EDF needs cash to fund upkeep of 57 aging nuclear reactors (and to build six new ones) - so it will sell its renewables business, EDF Power Solutions, to private equity firm KKR.

The Canadian equity firm will take over 5.6GW operating renewable assets in the US and Canada, where EDF has developed 26GW of wind, solar, and battery projects, plus electric-vehicle charging, and holds 17GW under service contracts in North America. The business is valued at about $4.56B dollars.

Our hosts think it could be great for competition, and also that it could (maybe should) undergo a long and thorough regulatory review.

More importantly, they ask, once the transition begins, what will happen to the knowledge base and very talented people at EDF?

Duke Walks Away from North Carolina; what will that mean for US Energy Consumers?

Duke Energy’s settlement with the federal government to give up its offshore lease in the Carolina Long Base lease area means Charlotte-based Duke gets a partial reimbursement to invest in other generation activities for its Carolina customers, specifically, new nuclear and natural gas plants.

The Carolina Long Bay lease area would have generated around 1.3GW, or enough to power about 300,000 homes. Now, some of those consumers might be asking, how soon will electricity from those new plants be available? Wind and solar projects are typically producing energy much faster than new nuclear or LNG developments. Especially ones that aren’t even in the planning stages yet.

Meanwhile, in South Korea…

Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) secured more than 1GW of the 1.8GW offered in South Korea’s latest offshore wind auction.

CIP’s two projects included 504MW Haesong 3 - the largest bottom-fixed project selected - and 532MW Haewoori 2 - the auction’s only floating wind winner, out of three floating bids. Both projects will be built with 14MW Siemens Gamesa turbines.

If you could use a little good news, tune in for a giddy discussion about the possibilities this news brings: The record-breaking auction seems to prove South Korea’s serious commitment to wind, and with the country’s strong steel and shipbuilding industries, our hosts had to ask, will the country soon be home to the leading offshore development in the world?

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange is Betting on Wind

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) plans to launch wind derivatives across three continents. Contracts will be tied to the grid in Texas, the markets in the United Kingdom and Germany, and Victoria state in Australia.

What does that mean? A standardized, exchange-listed contract would allow a utility or a wind farm owner to lock in a hedge (contract) in about 15 minutes. The contracts would settle against independent data that models how much power the wind should have produced in a given place - likely supplied by the Finnish firm Vaisala.

Our hosts have questions - like will ice and other weather forecasting get better as better price-forecasting tools, and standardized contracts, come online? It almost has to - but, how soon?

Plans are not final, but CME says it could go live within months. It may, or may not, be the first to break in - Singapore’s Abaxx exchange and China’s energy exchanges are moving into weather trading, too.

PES Exclusive: Unlocking the future of grease-lubricated bearings

An article in the latest issue of PES Wind offers a readable overview describing the model built by Shell, SKF, and the University of Twente designed to predict the performance of grease-lubricated bearings. Their research paper won the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers’ Captain Alfred E. Hunt Memorial Award.

But you don’t have to be a tribologist to know that, when it comes to bearing failures -(we have to say it) Grease is the word.

The article details the model and how it predicts film thickness, and our hosts’ descriptions get even grittier. This year INCOSE’s symposium theme focused on harmonizing emerging AI technologies with human creativity. Which sounds like a good thing - but don’t expect Matthew Stead to suddenly become a fan of data centers in space.

But for now, back to earth - where wind consolidations continue.

Muehlhan Wind Service purchases Spain’s Coverwind

Muehlhan Wind Service continues to be one of wind’s most aggressive buyers. Recently, the Danish company acquired Coverwind Solutions of Spain. The deal was expected to close by the end of June.

This is Muehlhan’s 11th acquisition in the past three years. (Muehlhan recently acquired Canada’s AC883.) The underlying story is the decommissioning side of things, as Muehlhan views turbine end-of-life services as an important growth area in the future - and Coverwind provides those services.

If certain aspects of the industry (ahem - new offshore developments) seem to be in a holding pattern, that’s not the case for services companies. Also in June, Fairwind acquired established blade repair company Rope Partner, which has long been seen as the go-to blade experts on complex repairs. These consolidations may be positioning the industry for strong moves once developments are unleashed.

News Flash: Delays Cost Money, and Renewables Shouldn’t Wait for Fossil Fuel Projects

When will consumers be fed up with grid bottleneck? First, the good news: the Generator Interconnection Interim Progress Report drafted by Grid Strategies and the Brattle Group found that seven major U.S. grid operators have made at least some progress on generator interconnection reform since FERC Order 2023 took effect.

However, projects are not moving faster through the queue. The problem? Fast track interconnection policies at MISO, PJM, and SPP have placed priority on utility-affiliated and fossil-heavy resources at the expense of independent clean energy developers - even though solar and wind projects are proven to be faster to complete, and to offer lower prices for consumers.

In this week’s podcast, our hosts discussed the fact that, since March, Vineyard Wind apparently has not paid rent for its swanky office space in Boston’s John Hancock Tower. The landlord in this case, BP Hancock LLC, said it took the first couple of months’ rent out of the security deposit, but now Vineyard owes $1.2M in back rent. Hancock has sued in Suffolk Superior Court for back rent and legal fees.

Of course, Vineyard Offshore has been in a rough patch lately, with GE Vernova seeking to exit its turbine supply contract while Vineyard claims Vernova owes it $800M - costs arising from the 2024 blade break and numerous blade replacements that delayed the project’s completion by more than a year.

Vineyard Wind is a joint project between Avangrid and BP. So, obviously, this isn’t your typical college-kids-struggling-to-pay-the-rent scenario. What don’t we know? Will the state step in to resolve things? As Allen said, “Massachusetts needs Vineyard Wind to run.”

However ironic the timing - nearing the US’s 250th anniversary and all - maybe the state should take some lessons from the British.

European Offshore Wind Supported 180,000 Jobs in 2025

In new analysis using OECD, inter-country input-output tables, the independent, employee-owned Norwegian firm Menon Economics puts European offshore wind’s total employment impact at approximately 180,000 full-time equivalents in 2025, including direct supply chain jobs and wider indirect roles.

The total gross value added across Europe reached € 26B, and the operational share of that value is growing as the installed base expands. The operational valuation is important because, unlike construction FTEs, O&M services provide long-term, project-independent benefits. The largest economic concentrations were seen in Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Menon is expected to update the study annually - and the UK government isn’t waiting to act on what can only be seen as good news for offshore.

UK Launches £15M Offshore Wind Innovation Package

In a coordinated push to move offshore wind technology from prototype stage into commercial supply chains, the UK has deployed ￡15M through Innovate UK, the national innovation agency supporting business-led innovation.

The primary goal of the multi-agency collaboration is to fast-track UK innovators in order to expand domestic and international supply chains while sustaining the UK’s global offshore wind leadership.

The package’s three components include:

• a ￡10M open competition program for offshore wind innovation

• a ￡5M Wind Innovation Hub to align industry, government, and research, and

• ￡12M for phase one of the Large Structures Innovation Centre on the Isle of Wight - where Vestas has already signed as its first industry partner for sustainable blade development.

While there are many facets to the initiative, from next-generation foundations and substructures to smart environmental services and O&M innovation, our hosts had some thoughts on what to focus on first - and they all agreed it’s blades.

Up-Tower Repair of Pultruded CFRP Spar Cap Planks - Fraunhofer IWES Feasibility Research

Recent research by Fraunhofer IWES (Institute for Wind Energy Systems) into repairing a damaged pultruded spar cap - a condition typically caused by lightning flashovers or insufficient inter-plank bonding - normally means taking the blade off the turbine.

Fraunhofer IWES’s recent peer-reviewed feasibility research in Wind Energy Science asks whether that repair can be done with the blade on the machine.

Using finite-element analysis on an 81.6-meter blade from a 7MW offshore turbine, researchers found that a shear web window cut-out as short as one meter reduces buckling resistance from 20.7x critical load to 4x critical load — a reduction of over 80%. The proposed solution involves temporary external clamping frames and internal push-rod assemblies, installed and removed up-tower.

The article in Wind Energy Science (linked below) is worth a read, as it describes several solution scenarios.

After acknowledging the frustration that industry-shared knowledge is still lagging - and the fact that damage in pultrusions are often hard to detect - our hosts launch into the intricacies of blade repair, carbon fiber peculiarities, and when a repair team really needs to call in an engineer.

Growing pipelines, tighter timelines, and pressure to reduce variability across the delivery chain have shown that lifting operations are a critical path item; and predictable, efficient, certified lifting systems save time, money…and lives.

European lifting equipment specialist Safe Lifting makes the case that the next wave of project delivery depends not on bigger turbines alone, but on repeatable, standardized lifting operations.

In the latest issue of PES Wind Magazine, Safe Lifting shows how modular spreader beams and rigging systems built from pre-validated configurations cut engineering lead times and mobilization time, while rental-based circular equipment models replace project-specific procurement.

Our hosts share their experience - including horror stories of lifting equipment causing structural damage on the way up tower - and their thoughts on the role of lifting, industry standards, and why suppliers are taking the lead - all in this week’s Uptime episode.

In this week’s podcast, our hosts talk about how Norway’s Conservative Party has stepped in to require a slew of additional assessments and analysis before allocating NOK 35B to Utsira Nord. The 1.5 GW floating offshore wind project is expected to be a major hub for testing and industrializing floating wind technology in deep waters. But it may be time to temper those expectations…

What’s Going on in Norway? Or with Offshore Wind, in General?

Equinor has said that project work on Utsira Nord will continue, but it has warned of potential consequences - and an independent advisor has said there could be a one-year delay. Industry is calling the decision “unnecessary red tape,” raising concerns about consumer energy costs and damage to small and medium suppliers and coastal ports.

If delays and responses like these sound familiar, perhaps you’re thinking about the US - where last week brought a new ruling on a year-old executive order.

If, instead, you’re wondering whether the current situation in Norway calls into question the future of offshore wind, you’ll want to hear how Matthew and Rosemary see it. (Spoiler alert: they don’t agree.)

It’s been a busy week.

Federal Court Vacates IRS Notice Restricting Clean Energy Tax Credits

On June 6, a judge in the US District Court for the District of Columbia vacated IRS Notice 2025-42, finding the July 2025 executive order “arbitrary and capricious” under the Administrative Procedure Act.

The notice had eliminated the five percent “Safe Harbor” for wind projects — the mechanism developers have (since 2013) used to lock in tax credit eligibility by spending 5% of total project cost before a statutory deadline, without needing to break ground.

The court found that the IRS provided no justification for eliminating Safe Harbor, ignored industry stakeholder comments, and failed to explain why wind and large-scale solar were treated differently from other clean energy technologies. The decision also noted that the IRS did not address reliance interests of developers who built project pipelines on more than a decade of consistent guidance.

What’s next? The matter is headed to the IRS for further review, as the ruling applies market-wide, and not only to plaintiffs. Assuming the ruling sticks, what will it mean for large-scale wind and solar projects in the US?

Good question. But as one of our intrepid hosts says about energy markets, “Volatility creates opportunity.”

(While we like to think all of our hosts are intrepid, that was Matthew’s reaction this week, during a spirited discussion about how additional battery power is changing energy pricing across market.)

But, maybe volatile isn’t the best word for the market at the moment.

In fact, after recently updated climate scenario models, UK insurer and asset manager Legal & General Group PLC concluded that the energy transition is advancing faster than previously projected.

And maybe - maybe? - Legal & General also considered the fact that the UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) has, since January 2026, issued connection offers to more than 700 clean energy projects. The suddenly-rapid rate of clearing the UK’s grid backlog is not an overnight success story; the groundwork for reform began in 2023.

This led our hosts to a discussion of how PPAs have been affected by an influx of batteries on the market and how that explains Tex-Australian energy market.

Skills Gap: As Out-of-Warranty Repairs Increase, Techs Become More Important

With FairWind acquiring Rope Partner, next step is scaling

Is there a critical shortage of wind technicians? “Not quite yet” was our hosts’ uneasy answer.

But with more than 75% of blade repairs conducted outside of OEM warranty, operators are taking a greater interest in blade technicians, training pathways, and certifications - or at least, consistent standards. And as blades get bigger (needing bigger repairs and bigger maintenance budgets) asset owners are looking harder at filling their need for blade technicians.

To be clear, they need experienced blade technicians. An article by Global Blade Service USA in the latest PES Wind magazine explains competency timeline:

• Rope access technician ~ 8-10 years

• Basket technician ~ 5-7 years

• Factory technician ~ 4-5 years to reach full structural repair competency

While you can download the latest issue of PES Wind for more hard numbers on the technician situation, this week our team discussed how the role and its unique physical demands, and the lifestyle may - or may not - change as the profession starts getting more attention from the industry, and particularly from asset owners and operators.

You can also expect to hear more from companies like Denmark-based FairWind, which acquired Colorado-based Rope Partner earlier this month. With the acquisition, FairWind has a workforce of 2,200. That’s a large number for one company, but a small fraction of the projected need across the industry.

In the intro to this week’s podcast, our hosts share their impressions from American Clean Power, held last week in Houston.

The show was held on the heels of the American Clean Power Association’s Q1 2026 report, which painted a less-than-sunny picture of recent trends. In spite of a reporting 6.4 GW of new clean power, total capacity fell 17% year over year, making the first quarter of 2026 the weakest since 2023.

Surface Inspection is No Longer Enough, Why You Can’t Find Blades Technicians, and What You Need to Know about the Coming “Warranty Cliff”

Blade failures are costly, and as fleets age, more blades are failing. At the same time, roughly 75% of blade repairs today are handled by someone other than the OEM. Now, as a new wave of turbine blades are maturing out of their warranty periods, owners and operators will be forced to deal with more repairs than ever before - with fewer trained technicians.

Sorry. Did you come here looking for good news? (There’s actually a little of that below; keep reading.)

In a recent article in PES Wind, Global Blade Service USA makes the case that this is not a hiring problem; it’s a training problem. Now, hold that thought. (We’re getting to the good news; stick with us.)

In addition to the shortage-of-blades-technicians problem, there’s another concern - existing blade diagnostic techniques are badly dated, and not very precise.

So here’s the first glimmer of good news: three companies - Minerva Energy, ABJ Renewables/ABJ Drones, and Concept X - have developed a system called Windvue, which pairs high-resolution cameras with thermal imaging to look inside the blade.

On one project, it revealed five times more repairs than the blade’s own records showed. As an owner/operator, that would definitely change the dynamic of the next OEM contract negotiation, right?

And as Allen points out, insurance companies are likely to be big fans of the system.

China’s First Undersea Data Center, Powered by Offshore Wind

Earlier this week, China powered up the first underwater data center powered by offshore wind.

It’s expected to eliminate the need for more than 50 metric tons of coal, which is good. Most of its power needs are supplied by an offshore wind farm; it’s taking advantage of the natural cooling effects of being submerged in the ocean to cool the heat produced by the data center.

Does that raise the temperature of the ocean water. Well, almost certainly. Is it better than sending data centers into orbit?

Will Ørsted Sell Its US Onshore Business?

Now that Ørsted has sold its European onshore wind business to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), reports suggest that the Danish company may explore selling its US onshore portfolio too — wind, solar, and battery storage — in a deal that could bring in more than a billion dollars. That business generated more than one-fifth of Ørsted’s total operating income last year. Meanwhile, more than 50 US organizations are urging RWE CEO Markus Krebber to not hand back over $1B in US offshore wind leases as part of a reported deal with the Trump administration.

China Switches On World’s Largest Offshore Wind Turbine; Researchers Track Atmospheric Effects

China (who else?) has commissioned what is being called the world’s largest offshore wind turbine. For now. This time it’s a 20MW machine built by Mingyang Smart Energy, installed off Hainan province in the South China Sea.

The structure stands about 242 meters tall with blades around 128 meters long, and is rated to survive gusts up to 80 meters per second. Because the rotor is thought to be large enough to create measurable changes in local air currents and temperature distribution, researchers are expected to measure the turbine’s physical footprint and any weather changes it may bring.

New Bearings May Be “Perfect Innovation”

If you picked up a copy of the latest PES Wind Magazine at American Clean Power (or if you have a subscription), you may find the article on ZF’s bearing design very interesting.

In the early 2010s, feasibility studies began exploring the use of hydrodynamic plain bearings for the demanding conditions in wind farms - and the potential advantages of the hydrodynamic bearings were quickly evident.

As our podcast hosts/engineering team sees it, while the mechanical design of the bearings is pretty straightforward, the design is tricky - and ZF seems to have gotten it right. Matthew goes so far as to call it the “perfect innovation.” Listen up to find out why he likes it. 🎧

Katrick Technologies Ltd is taking a truly new approach to harnessing wind energy - one that could show up on a highway or runway near you.

The company - which is based in Glasgow, Scotland - has developed modular wind turbines using oscillating aerofoils inside honeycomb-shaped frames. We’ll wait while you try to picture that. OK; got it?

Inspired by the way bees move, the company’s design features modular, enclosed structures that can stack together and bolt onto existing urban infrastructure, like highway noise barriers, airport perimeters, and rooftops. Its silent operation makes it safer for birds and other wildlife - yet the company estimates a standard 10Kw array at a 25% capacity factor can generate almost 22,000 kWh annually. 🐝 We’ll follow this one!

Let’s take a look at Iowa.

Last fall we looked at some opposition to proposed new wind developments and also noted the existing reliance on wind energy in the midwest states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Read that article here.

How Iowa Ranks in Wind Energy Production

More than 124 utility-scale wind farms sit on Iowa’s approximately 55,860 square miles of land - and those wind farms produce over 60% of the state’s electricity. Iowa was the first state in the nation to generate the majority of its power from wind. 1 2

With an installed capacity of over 13,000 MW, Iowa ranks second in the US for total installed wind capacity. And while the electricity powering Iowa households is important, so too is wind’s impact on the state’s economy.

Wind energy is a massive economic driver for many farmers in rural Iowa, as well as local municipalities. Lease payments to landowners and property tax revenues for county governments bring in many millions each year.

How Wind is Good for Business

Iowa’s Economic Development & Finance Authority has long made it clear that generating electricity from wind and other renewable resources is a strategic factor in its ability to attract healthy businesses to the state.

While both Amazon and Meta count on Iowa’s wind energy infrastructure to power massive data centers, they are relative newcomers to the state. Manufacturing is Iowa’s biggest economic sector - and the wind industry employs thousands of technicians and logistics professionals there.

According to American Clean Power, more than 75 Iowa-based companies contribute to the wind supply chain, such as TPI Composites (in Newton) and Siemens Gamesa (in Fort Madison), operate massive factories that supply blades and other components for turbines across North America. ACP anticipates 5,000 MW of additional wind power capacity and billions more in private investment by 2030.3

Friendly Competition?

Although it has only 13 active wind farms, Iowa’s neighbor to the north, Wisconsin, also seems keen to invest in wind and other renewable energies. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation touts business investment by focusing on affordable electricity and the relatively low environmental impact of wind and other renewable energies. All of the Uptime hosts were on hand for episode 321 this week, which was good since there’s some big news brewing and big deals looming… at least, there’s one gigantic deal looming - and that’s where we’ll start.

NextEra bought Dominion on paper; approval, acquisition could take a long time

Since the May 18 announcement that NextEra Energy will purchase Dominion Energy for nearly $67B what the companies are generating mostly is - headlines.

The need for more power for more data centers (and making more money on said power) almost certainly drove merger (acquisition) discussions in the first place. And now that the two power companies have come to an agreement, you might think that changes are already afoot for electricity consumers in most of the eastern states. But that’s not how things work in the US.

In fact, the deal faces layers of review, from multiple state and federal agencies. Finalizing the deal could take 12 to 18 months. What will happen in the meantime?

The two companies are surely counting on a brisk business: their combined large-load project pipeline exceeds 130 GW, approximately three times the installed capacity of New York. But will data centers stick around (on earth) long enough to fulfill the companies’ profit expectations?

Allen and Rosemary agree that data centers are headed to space, sooner rather than later. (Since those two rarely agree, if you haven’t tuned in to a podcast for a while, this would be a good one to catch!)

And if that happens, will the US find itself in an energy surplus situation, like Sweden? Tune in to hear our hosts’ take on it - as usual, each has a slightly different perspective on the situation.

Now, what about an energy surplus in Sweden? Glad you asked…

80 Percent of Swedish Wind Power Producers Operating at a Loss

Overcapacity is a real problem in Sweden. In 2024, when researchers analyzed 244 Swedish wind power producers operating more than 3,700 turbines, they found that the vast majority were operating at a loss.

While wind production rose, profit margins fell, primary due to low and negative electricity prices. The situation doesn’t sound bad for consumers, at first - but when wind farms go bankrupt, like Markbygden 1, and industry suppliers falter, the result is bad for the overall economy.

So what would help?

A more robust grid and transmission system, allowing excess power to be exported and sold to benefit companies and consumers.

When will the world get to work on the transmission issue? We’ll keep asking…

Meanwhile, in spite of solar’s lower price point taking a bite out of wind’s sales, China’s wind dominance is now unquestionable.

Five Chinese Manufacturers Outperformed Vestas in 2025

In 2025, for the first time, five separate Chinese turbine manufacturers each individually outpaced Vestas in annual installations, although Vestas still holds the crown for cumulative installations, at 201 GW.

Last year’s new wind installations shaped up like this:

• Goldwind 29.7 GW

• Envision Energy 21.8 GW

• Windey Energy Technology Group 19.8 GW

• Ming Yang Smart Energy 18.6

• Sany Renewable Energy 15.1

As China continues to execute on a plan (that looks a lot like its solar playbook), major challenges loom for manufacturers elsewhere. After taking a deep dive into this turn of events (that everyone saw coming), our hosts take a broader look - asking how such robust worldwide competition will impact the energy transition.

WindEurope, Blades Europe - Good Show!

Matthew's only complaint about WindEurope - it might have been a little too good. The lunch line was quite long! Among other companies, Iberdrola and RES Group had a very strong presence - with RES sponsoring the WindEurope Student Programme to help develop future talent for the industry.

Hot topics that were well-represented in booths and also much-discussed on the show floors:

• Bird and bat detection

• Lightning damage mitigation

• Recycling

• New IEC standards

Also encouraging: Matthew noted a strong showing from the supply chain, from cables to repair services, and everything in-between. In Edinburgh (Blades Europe), ORE Catapult shared good insights regarding equipment life extension. And just to be clear about those IEC standards, Matthew was on the panel. Suzlon Vice Chairman Girish Tanti announced the company’s new Blue Sky platform at WindEurope, with 5- and 6.3MW turbines aimed directly at the European market. Tanti said that Suzlon will build its first European factory if orders support it. The company recently appointed industry veteran Paulo Soares as its new European president. The Indian company’s European headquarters are in Denmark, with subsidiaries in Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Romania.

Meanwhile, Ming Yang hasn’t given up on building a factory in Europe - but with the at-first-favored-but-later-scuttled Scotland plant a no-go, the UK isn’t obviously backing down. Looking over our shoulder at the first two quarters of 2026, it’s clear that demand for competition and lower prices is building worldwide:

• Jinko Solar signed 5MW worth of deals in Nigeria, where diesel prices have risen 40% since this latest energy crisis began

• Chinese electric vehicle exports are up 112% year over year in April

• Chinese battery exports rose significantly March; Gotion High-Tech aims to double overseas shipments in 2026

If Ming Yang’s plans to build in Europe continue to be thwarted, will the company get creative? Maybe they’ll look for a European-ish location like…Türkiye?

Allen Hall and Rosemary Barnes covered a variety of topics in episode 319 this week, and as usual, our newsletter covers just some of it. Here, we focus on how policies and power pricing seem to be moving in opposite directions on opposite sides of the world - with an appropriate lead-in from Rosemary, on what she saw at the Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition 2026 in Sydney.

Where Wind and Renewables Actually Work

The green transition may be further along in Australia than anywhere else on earth, and that was part of the encouraging message that Rosemary and others heard at this year’s SEC. Fortescue Founder Andrew Forrest delivered a keynote.

While Fortescue is big (huge) in iron ore mining, Forrest is betting the company’s future on green power generation. It’s probably a good bet, at least in Australia, where, in Q4 2025, renewables hit 50% of power generation while experiencing no reliability problems, even during the country’s hottest summer on record.

One of Rosemary’s key takeaways about why the country has made progress on its energy goals: it’s not due to magic, but rather thanks to a combination of good engineering, favorable economics, and a government that isn’t standing in the way.

Another takeaway: batteries are getting better, and they comprised the vast majority of technologies on display at SEC 2026 Most of the batteries featured at the show were integrated, modular, and AI-managed systems. Because the better (and more standardized) battery technology becomes, the more reliable and attractive wind energy becomes, we’ll come back to that subject in future episodes.

But for now, this week we focus on Europe (and the US) to review some basic lessons in business. And again, we’re not talking about magic - instead, we’re talking about competition, and what happens when there’s not enough. (Spoiler alert: prices go up.)

Offshore Equipment Prices Jump in Europe

While electricity prices are going down, down, down in Australia, offshore wind energy prices are going in the opposite direction in the EU.

Since 2020, Siemens Gamesa and Vestas have increased prices on turbine components by 40-45%. In the same period, manufacturing cost increases account for a little more than 20% of the total increase, so the remaining differences is due to market factors. In other words, it’s a seller’s market.

With GE Vernova not accepting new offshore orders - for how long is anyone’s guess- and Ming Yang officially not welcome as an offshore supplier in the EU, is there room for an Indian company to provide some competition in the wind space? Or even, eventually, a South Korean turbine manufacturer?

Data Centers Drive New Gas Projects in Texas

Speaking of market forces, in the US, a major shift has happened in Texas: for the first time in a decade, natural gas projects have overtaken wind in ERCOT’s interconnection queue.

Those projects had a lot of ground to cover: in the past three years, gas projects in the queue have jumped more than 400%, and almost all of those are planned to support data centers.

Allen asked the natural question - and you might too: with data centers able to operate anywhere with enough available power, doesn’t that mean that Australia - with essentially the most available and most affordable electricity in the world, is the best place to locate them? We’re assuming ERCOT’s stakeholders are way ahead of us on this, but the question is still worth asking.

Among other things in episode 318 this week, Allen Hall, Yolanda Padron and Rosemary Barnes discuss the interesting timing of two developments in the US. Just as the Administration effectively stopped two offshore wind projects, Vineyard Wind announced very attractive pricing (for consumers) - in fact, it’s so attractive, some representatives in the Nation’s capital are paying attention.

Here’s what’s brewing stateside:

The Department of the Interior announced agreements to terminate two more offshore wind leases - Bluepoint Wind off the coast of New Jersey, and Golden State Wind in California’s Morro Bay.

The terms sound strangely familiar: Global Infrastructure Partners (part of Blackrock), will invest up to $765M in a LNG facility instead of developing Bluepoint Wind. And on the other side of the country, Golden State Wind will recover approximately $120M in lease fees after redirecting its investment to oil and gas or LNG projects along the Gulf Coast. Both companies say they will not pursue further offshore wind development in the United States.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts,Vineyard Wind has activated PPAs with three utilities, and the price is right: the contracts set a fixed electricity price of $69.50 per megawatt-hour for the next year, with a two-and-a-half percent annual increase, which are expected to save ratepayers $1.4B over twenty years.

Ratepayers aren’t the only ones paying attention; representatives in DC are, too. (See The Cost of Saying No to Wind or Solar, linked below.)

While the US seems determined to stop renewable energy production before too many consumers enjoy stable electricity delivery and rates, Europe and China (and everyone else) may be inching closer to working together on wind developments.

Michael Hannibal, Chair of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and a partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, says Europe cannot draw the wind energy it needs without China. While some Western turbine manufacturers already use Chinese components, Hannibal urges collaboration on a ”free and level” playing field.

Our favorite influencer (that’s Rosemary!) recently visited several Chinese factories and found out what AI and robots are doing there. Spoiler alert: they’re not doing repairs. She dishes in this week’s episode.

Countries around the world are coming face-to-face with a very demanding energy future. The stories Allen Hall, Yolanda Padron and Nikki Briggs discuss in episode 317 this week highlight how various countries and regions are dealing with that reality.

And speaking of reality - before we step onto the global stage - do you know any good marriage counselors in Massachusetts? We’re (almost) serious.

Now that GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind have been ordered by a judge to make nice, at least for another 30 days, we’re wondering if that’s enough time for these two to sort out their differences. They just need to get along for the next 20 or 30 years, you know, for the sake of the kids who just want reasonably-priced electricity.

We wish it didn’t sound like a soap opera, but as long as it does, please tune in again next week.

US Wind PPA Prices Hit Record Highs, Driving 48GW Pipeline

Meanwhile, the grid isn’t getting any younger

The average wind PPA now stands at its highest level ever. (It’s only been tracked since 2018, but still - a dramatic pause is warranted.) At $79.40/Mwh, it’s up 24% from just a year ago. And according to Wood Mackenzie, US wind installations are expected to nearly double in 2026, building toward 48Gw of new capacity through 2030.

With strong demand and rising costs, developers are wondering whether the pipeline can hold up under the pressure.

Our hosts ask some even tougher questions - like, how much more can an aging grid take?

Not to worry anybody, but most US grid infrastructure is getting real close to 100 years old. So, if it’s not quite time to worry, it’s definitely time to put plans in motion for the next 100 years. So where’s the plan? Allen’s take is that while a lot of smart people recognize the problem, they’re not well-versed in energy generation and transmission - and as it turns out, “you can’t just AI your way into either one.”

Well, shoot. Where’s the other plan?

The “other” plan that is almost certainly gaining support is - drum roll please - renewables. Solar and wind are simply the fastest to availability. Now about that grid…seriously, if you have the answer, please let us know. Soon.

Electricity Prices are Driving Resistance to US Data Centers

Maine is the latest of US states to pass a temporary moratorium on data centers. As of the last week of April, at least 14 states have closed the door to data centers. Some of those moratoriums will hold through 2028; others pause data center developments through 2029.

Is there a future solution in which certain states welcome data centers - with all their baggage (water usage, pollution, tremendous energy demands…) - because those data centers agree to partner with renewable power generation developments, and share lower electricity prices with local residents? Or is it more likely that we send all the data centers down to the ocean floor or up into space?

Yes, in this week’s podcast, we go there.

Will EU Form Energy Bloc to Handle Fossil Fuel and Security Issues?

At the WindEurope annual conference in Madrid this week, Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen and EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said that skyrocketing oil prices suggest a fossil fuel crisis, not an energy crisis.

If you think, that’s just because they’re wind advocates, consider where and why you may have formed that opinion.

A report by WindEurope and research firm CASM Technology showed that a coordinated network of anti-wind actors produced more than 40,000 social media posts in 18 months, driving 6.3 million interactions - and delaying projects worth billions of euros. Jorgensen proposed forming a true “Energy Union” to facilitate EU-level coordinated energy planning. The industry wants to see facts, faster permitting, and better grids to move the region toward energy independence.

Definitely related: now that Ming Yang has been rejected from Scotland’s new wind developments, will Vestas be the big offshore - and onshore - winner? And if not Vestas, who? Allen thinks India could step up and into some lucrative partnerships.
