I thought it was about square footage and natural light and finding a neighborhood where the coffee shops don’t look at you like you’re an escaped mental patient. But take away the real estate listings and the domestic logistics, and house hunting rarely has anything to do with real estate. It’s about the frantic, desperate, slightly unhinged search for somewhere you don’t have to spend all your time apologizing for the shape of your soul.

I looked for that architecture in others for a long time. I searched for it in rooms full of family, in deep friendships that promised safety, in circles of “my people” where I thought my presence was noted, catalogued and understood.

And then you realize the joke of it all! You can sit at a dinner table surrounded by people who’ve known you since you were in diapers, who watched you lose your baby teeth, while internally hyperventilating because you are completely, violently homeless in your own life

There is a specific kind of internal erosion that happens when you realize you are unheard by the very people you built your life around. It isn’t an active war; nobody is screaming or throwing cutlery. It is subtler, and infinitely weirder than that.

It’s like handing someone the blood-dripping blueprints of your mind, and they look at it, blink twice and ask you if you’re drinking enough water. It is saying your deepest, most terrifying truths and watching them fall into the conversation like a dead pigeon through a skylight, no echo, no impact, just a horrifying beat of awkward silence before someone changes the subject to their air fryer.

You learn to do a dangerous, humiliating kind of emotional geometry. You cut your own edges off to fit more neatly into their living rooms. You mute your stranger thoughts so you don’t soil their delicate emotional rugs. You become a malfunctioning ghost in your own relationships, haunting your own life, convincing yourself that being tolerated by a roomful of oblivious people is the same thing as being housed.

You tell yourself, they love me so this must be home.

But love without understanding is nothing but a nicely decorated waiting room with bad fluorescent lighting. Being invisible to your own people is like being a squatter in your own body, always feeling like you’re on the verge of getting kicked out and having security called on you.

The day the illusion collapses, usually while you’re staring at a wall in a bathroom, realizing you’ve spent five years playing small so people who don’t even know your favorite color won’t feel crowded, is when the real search for a house begins.

It’s a terrifying moment when you step out of those spaces, and you slam the door behind you. The wind is cold. The open air is vast and for a second you feel like a frantic, homeless stray. You look around for shelter; a person, a validation text, a sympathetic nod, and find nothing at all.

And then, right there in the midst of that terrifying blankness, you realize that if you aren’t living inside your own skin, no place else is ever going to feel like home. You are a homeless ghost who is breaking into other people’s houses wondering why it feels cold.

You can’t just take up residence in another person’s mind and call it home. You cannot rent psychological stability from people who haven’t even cleaned out their own emotional basements. Safety doesn’t come from finding a human savior who sees you completely; it comes from standing in your own private, unhinged, beautiful interior landscape and deciding you are never going to evict yourself again.

I am done house hunting.

I have officially stopped waiting in someone else's kitchen, begging them to leave a cup of chai warm for me on the stove. I’ve realized that I am my own home. I am the concrete walls that hold my weird anxieties, the roof that shields my dark jokes, the windowless closet where I can scream without needing to fill out a noise complaint, and the only person who holds the master key to my own head.

It turns out that being unknown by others is uncomfortable, but being unknown to yourself is a total catastrophe. Being unseen by your people is lonely, but walking away from their cramped, suffocating rooms to build your own foundation? That isn’t abandonment. That is moving in.

I am entirely okay with being a locked door to people who refuse to wipe their dirty shoes before entering my life. The house is built. The floors are clean. The door is unlocked only for those who actually want to sit in the weird, quiet darkness with me, and if nobody comes, the lease is still mine, the view is still incredible, and I am finally, permanently home.

Thanks for reading! But lately, I have developed a taste for blood.

Not literal blood! God no. The iron smell of a butcher shop still makes me want to faint into a pile of spinach. But there is a different kind of carnivory happening under my ribs. A phantom hunger. The realization that while I’ve been busy being “accommodating,” the world has been chewing me up and spitting me out like a piece of gristle it couldn’t quite swallow.

For those of us raised in the cult of niceness, our internal wiring is basically a series of “No, you go ahead” and “It’s totally fine, don’t worry about it” circuits. We are taught that anger is a failure of character. Especially as women, our rage is treated like a messy leak in the basement; you don’t talk about it, you just mop it up before the guests arrive and pretend the foundation isn’t rotting.

I thought my ability to absorb micro-aggressions, casual dismissals, and the crushing weight of societal expectations was proof of my evolved, vegetarian soul. I was a human sponge. I could take a hit and stay soft. But here is the thing about sponges, eventually, they get full of dirty water. And then they start to smell.

The first time I felt the “steak-hunger” was at a grocery store. A man pushed his cart directly into my heels. I did the standard “vegetarian protocol.” I turned around, smiled a tight, pained smile, and said, “Oh, sorry!” I apologized, to the man who had just used a metal carriage to assault my Achilles tendon. As I walked away, I felt a sharp, metallic tang in the back of my throat. It wasn’t the samosa I had for lunch. It was the sudden, unhinged desire to turn around, grab his cart, and launch it into the frozen pea section with the strength of a thousand scorned ancestors. I wanted to snarl. I wanted to take a bite out of the air he was breathing. I realized then, I am a vegetarian who is starving for a fight.

Female rage is often depicted as a “hysterical” scream or a quiet, weeping breakdown. But real rage, the deep, ancestral kind, is sophisticated. Calculated. It’s the “steak” we aren’t allowed to eat because it’s too “heavy” for our delicate systems. We are told to be “light.” Be airy. Be the salad of the social group.

But there is a specific kind of internal combustion that happens when you realize you’ve spent most of life being a side dish. You start looking at the hunters of the world, people who take up space, don’t apologize for breathing, and you realize they are eating steak while you pick at the garnish.

So, how do you eat steak?

You start by acknowledging the teeth. We all have them. Even the purest among us has those sharp canines designed for tearing. For years, I used mine only for chewing food. Now I’m learning to use them to tear through the “Yes, of course” that tumbles out of my mouth when someone asks for a favor that will cost me my sanity.

Eating steak while being a vegetarian is saying “No” without explanation. Being difficult. Letting your anger sit on the table like a bleeding open wound, and refusing to bandage it just to make the people around you comfortable.

There’s a certain comedy in the transition. When a pure-vegetarian soul starts acting like an apex predator, people don’t know what to do. They look at you like you’ve grown a second head made of paneer tikka and a cape made of bottle gourd.

Being a predator is exhausting. There’s a reason we chose the vegetarian lifestyle for so long. It’s easier to be soft. Safer to be the one who gets eaten than the one who has to hunt.

When you embrace rage, when you “eat the steak,” you lose the comfort of being the good one. You’ll be called aggressive. Unstable. Told you’ve changed. And yes, you have! You’ve moved up the food chain. You’ve realized your “purity” was a cage made of other people’s comfort. You can still love the world, and be peaceful, but you no longer have to be prey.

I am still a pure vegetarian. I check biscuit labels for animal fat. I cry at commercials with shivering puppies. But inside? Inside I am chewing on the bones of every “sorry” I never should have said. Feasting on the boundaries I finally drew. Savoring the iron-rich reality that anger is not a sin, it’s a nutrient. Keeps your heart beating when the world tries to turn it cold.

So, if your soul feels a little too leafy, if you’re tired of digesting everyone else’s comfort, maybe it’s time to change your diet.

Stop apologizing for your teeth. They were made for a reason. Go ahead. Take a bite. The world is delicious once you stop letting it eat you alive.

Thanks for reading! It is a lifelong exercise in humility. You can drink three gallons of water, sleep on a silk pillowcase washed in the tears of a saint and swear off sugar until you’re basically a sentient stick of celery, and your skin will still look at you and say, “That’s cute. Here is a subterranean cyst for your effort.”

There is a specific, malicious intelligence to acne. It knows your calendar. It has synced with your Google Drive. You can have clear skin for three weeks of total isolation, but the moment you have an occasion, a blemish will emerge with the structural integrity of a small mountain.

I’ll be standing there, looking in the mirror, staring at a whitehead that has decided to take up residence right on my cheek. I spend so much time negotiating with my reflection. I look at myself, mourning a version of me that doesn’t exist.

I stand there and think: If I could just fix this one patch, I’d finally be happy. And then I catch myself. I realize I’m crying over a biological process. I am a literal miracle of evolution, a sentient being capable of art and love and dark humor, and I’m currently losing my mind because my sebaceous glands are being “overachievers.”

The absurdity is what keeps me from actually dissolving into the sink. I have spent a fortune on products that claim to be “miracles” but smell like a wet basement. There is something deeply, darkly funny about sitting on your bed, weeping over your self-esteem, while trying to cool off the benzoyl peroxide on your face that makes you look like a serial killer from a low-budget slasher flick. You’re having a spiritual crisis, but you’re doing it while smelling like “cooling cucumber and zinc.”

Nothing sparks a primal rage quite like someone you see maybe once in a blue moon, who literally doesn’t know you, saying, “Have you tried drinking more water?” Oh, drink more water? Incredible. I’ve been using a 12-step routine that involves double-cleansing, chemical exfoliants, and a prayer to the gods of salicylic acid, but I never thought to try drinking enough water. Thank you, aunty. My 4,000 clogged pores are suddenly cured by your audacity.

We are out here haunting the aisles of Nykaa and Sephora, looking for the Holy Grail that will finally make our faces stop acting like they’re in the middle of a civil war. We are scarred, we are red, but at least we’re consistent.

But these marks? They are the roadmap of my stress, my hormones, my survival. They are proof that I am a living, breathing, reacting thing. My skin isn’t “failing”; it’s just loud. It’s shouting that it’s trying to protect me from a world that is far more toxic than a little bit of sebum.

Maybe being a girl is just a long series of hauntings. We are haunted by the girls we were, the girls we want to be, and the skin we wish we had. We are all just looking back at our younger selves and wishing we had known that we were beautiful, even when we were breaking out.

I want to tell that girl at the sink, the one with the benzoyl peroxide on her face who is almost about to cry, that she is more than her surface area.

You are the wit in your jokes, the books on your shelf, and the way you love your friends. You are not a “before” photo waiting to become an “after.”

You are the whole damn movie.

Thanks for reading!
