We thought our parents and grandparents were old-fashioned. Then life taught us what they were really trying to give us.

There are sounds you don't realize you've lost until one day you remember them.

For me, one of them is an old screen door slamming shut.

If you were raised in the South, especially in the South I remember, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

Not a modern storm door with a hydraulic closer that gently eases itself shut. I'm talking about a wooden screen door with a spring stretched across it. You'd let go of that thing and—

BAM!

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I can still hear it.

It's summertime. The worst of the day's heat has finally started to break. The lightning bugs are beginning to rise out of the grass. Cicadas and tree frogs are carrying on. Maybe there's a box fan running somewhere inside the house.

And it's getting dark.

Then, from somewhere down the road, you hear a mama hollering a child's name.

Maybe another mama answers from another porch.

And before long, everybody knows what time it is.

Time to come home.

We didn't need cellphones.

We didn't need GPS.

We didn't need our parents tracking our location.

Mama hollered.

You went home.

That was the system.

And somehow, we survived it.

The Things We Were Tired of Hearing

The older I get, the more I think about how much of what has actually carried me through this life didn't come from a textbook.

It didn't come from a college professor.

It didn't come from a self-help book.

It certainly didn't come from some fellow standing on a stage under bright lights explaining the secret to life for $49.95.

It came from ordinary people.

Mamas and daddies.

Grandmamas and granddaddies.

Aunts and uncles.

Old men sitting around country stores.

Women standing over a stove preparing supper after already working all day.

People with calluses on their hands who might not have been able to quote a philosopher but understood human nature better than plenty of people who could.

And they repeated the same things until we became sick of hearing them.

"Shut that door. We ain't air-conditioning the whole outdoors."

"Turn those lights off. Money doesn't grow on trees."

"Because I said so."

And the one nearly every Southern child heard:

"If everybody else jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?"

Lord have mercy.

Then there was the one that hurt worse than punishment:

"I'm not mad at you. I'm disappointed in you."

Just whip me and get it over with.

Don't stand there and tell me you're disappointed.

There were a hundred more.

"You made your bed. Now lie in it."

"Nothing good happens running around half the night."

"Finish what you started."

"Put a coat on before you catch your death."

"Clean your plate. There are children who would be thankful to have that."

We heard these things so often that eventually we stopped hearing them.

They became part of the background noise of childhood.

The hum of the refrigerator.

Rain hitting a tin roof.

A box fan turning in the bedroom.

Crickets outside an open window.

They were simply there.

And we had absolutely no idea how valuable they were.

Then We Became Teenagers—and Suddenly Knew Everything

At nine years old, you mostly obeyed because you had to.

Then you became a teenager.

That's when something remarkable happened.

Suddenly, you knew everything.

And somehow your parents, who had managed to feed you, clothe you, keep a roof over your head and prevent you from accidentally killing yourself for fifteen years, became complete idiots.

Granddaddy would say:

"Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do, or do without."

And you'd think, Why? They sell new ones at the store.

Grandmama would tell you:

"Pretty is as pretty does."

And you'd think, Grandma, you obviously don't understand how high school works.

Daddy would tell you:

"When you meet a man, look him in the eye and shake his hand like you mean it."

It seemed like some ancient ceremony adults performed.

Mama told you to write somebody a thank-you note.

Not send a text.

Not click a heart.

Not send an emoji.

Get a piece of paper.

Write the words.

Put them in an envelope.

Put a stamp on it.

Mail it.

And you'd rather have been sentenced to hard labor.

Because when we're young, wisdom often feels exactly like somebody trying to tell us what to do.

Then Life Shows Up

Eventually, you leave home.

And there's something nobody tells you about freedom:

The exciting part doesn't last very long.

At first, it's wonderful.

Nobody tells you when to come home.

Nobody tells you to turn off the lights.

Nobody asks where you've been.

Nobody tells you what to do with your money.

You have finally escaped all those ridiculous rules.

And then life introduces itself.

The transmission goes out.

The rent is due.

You lose the job you thought was secure.

Somebody you love gets sick.

Somebody you trusted betrays you.

The person you thought would be there forever decides otherwise.

Maybe the telephone rings one day and the voice on the other end tells you something that divides your life into before that phone call and after it.

That's adulthood.

And one night you find yourself sitting alone, staring at a wall, wondering how in God's name you got from where you thought your life was headed to where you are now.

And suddenly, from somewhere deep inside you, you hear Mama:

"It'll look better in the morning."

And you want to argue with her.

But you can't.

Because, dadgum it, Mama was right.

It usually does look better in the morning.

Not fixed.

That's different.

The bill may still be there.

The diagnosis may still be there.

The heartbreak may still be there.

The problem didn't magically disappear while you slept.

But somehow daylight changes the weight of it.

You get up.

You put your feet on the floor.

You make the coffee.

And you face another day.

Mama never explained the science behind that.

She never cited a study.

She didn't have to.

She knew.

Because somebody had probably told her the same thing when she was hurting.

And somebody had told them.

And somebody before them.

That was how wisdom traveled.

When Did Wisdom Need Footnotes?

Somewhere along the way, we decided that wasn't enough.

Old-fashioned wisdom became something to laugh at.

"Because I said so" became primitive.

Everything required a theory.

Everything needed an expert.

Everything needed a study, a diagnosis, a label, a seminar, a podcast or a twelve-step explanation.

I'm not against experts.

If somebody is cutting me open, I want a surgeon who went to medical school.

If I'm flying thirty thousand feet above the ground, I want a trained pilot sitting up front.

Expertise matters.

But expertise and wisdom are not the same thing.

And somewhere along the way, we started allowing strangers who had never sat at our supper tables to convince us they understood our families better than the people who had spent their lives loving us.

We began throwing away things our parents and grandparents knew because their wisdom didn't come with footnotes.

And what was this supposedly backward wisdom?

Say please.

Say thank you.

If you're wrong, apologize—and mean it.

Do the job right the first time.

If you borrow something, return it.

If you break something, fix it.

Leave a place better than you found it.

Don't take what doesn't belong to you.

Don't make promises you don't intend to keep.

Show up when you say you're coming.

Help somebody who cannot possibly do anything for you in return.

Respect your elders.

Stand up for somebody who can't stand up for themselves.

Work for what you want.

And above all:

Your word ought to mean something.

Those weren't quaint little Southern sayings.

Those were load-bearing walls.

They held up families.

They held up communities.

They held up marriages.

They held up friendships.

They held people together when there wasn't anything else holding them together.

And then we started tearing them out because we thought we were modernizing the house.

Now we're standing around wondering why the roof is sagging.

The Terrifying Day You Become Your Father

Then comes one of the great moments of adulthood.

You're standing in your own kitchen.

Maybe you're dealing with your own child or some young person who has done something you've told them repeatedly not to do.

Your patience is gone.

You open your mouth—

and your daddy comes out.

Not something similar to what Daddy used to say.

The exact sentence.

Same words.

Same cadence.

Same pause.

Possibly even the same look on your face.

For half a second, you're horrified.

Oh, Lord. I've become my father.

Then comes the second realization.

And this one is worse:

My God. Daddy was right.

He wasn't saying those things because he was too lazy to explain himself.

He had simply traveled farther down the road than you had.

He already knew something you didn't.

Some truths don't require a forty-five-minute explanation.

Sometimes fifty years of living can be condensed into one sentence.

"Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future."

"Your word is your bond."

"Nothing worth having comes easy."

"Don't write a check your backside can't cash."

"What happens in the dark eventually comes to the light."

"You reap what you sow."

"This too shall pass."

When I was young, I thought those were clichés.

Today I understand something completely different.

Those people weren't simple. They were condensed.

Think about that.

They had taken fifty, sixty, sometimes eighty years of living—marriages, babies, deaths, droughts, sickness, unemployment, wars, heartbreak, funerals, faith, mistakes, victories and failures—and boiled everything they had learned down into sentences a child could remember.

That isn't ignorance.

That's wisdom in its most concentrated form.

I Can Still Hear Them

A lot of those voices are gone now.

Some of the people who taught us these things have passed on.

Some of those houses are gone.

Some of those front porches aren't standing anymore.

The old neighborhood may look nothing like it did.

And that wooden screen door probably quit slamming decades ago.

But every once in a while, life gets quiet enough that I can still hear it.

BAM.

And I can hear those voices.

Mama.

Daddy.

Grandmama.

Granddaddy.

People telling us things we were too young, too stubborn and too convinced of our own intelligence to understand.

And now we're saying them.

Maybe that's how they're still here.

Maybe that's one of the ways God designed generations to speak to one another.

A grandfather says something to a little boy.

The boy rolls his eyes.

Forty years pass.

Then that boy—now an old man himself—opens his mouth, and Granddaddy's words come walking right back into the world.

Think about how remarkable that is.

Maybe what we dismissed as old-fashioned was never really old-fashioned.

Maybe it was timeless.

And maybe instead of being embarrassed by those old values, it's time we started passing them down again.

Because there will come a night when we're no longer here.

And one of our children or grandchildren may find themselves sitting alone in a kitchen somewhere.

Life will have knocked the wind out of them.

They'll be frightened.

They'll be hurting.

They won't know what tomorrow holds.

And maybe, from somewhere deep inside, they'll hear our voice saying:

"It'll look better in the morning."

They'll get up.

They'll make the coffee.

They'll watch the sun come up.

And they'll keep going.

Just like we did.

Just like our parents did.

Just like their parents did before them.

The screen door may be gone.

The porch may be gone.

The voices may belong to another time.

But the wisdom doesn't have to die with them.

Today, social media has become a courtroom where accusations spread faster than truth. A rumor can travel across the country in minutes, while the facts often struggle to catch up. Unfortunately, many believers have become participants in that cycle, passing along claims about churches, ministries, and pastors without ever taking the time to investigate for themselves.

That is one of the reasons I felt compelled to speak out.

Recently, I have watched a growing number of videos and online discussions targeting Karen Wheaton and Ramp Ministries in Hamilton, Alabama. Some have gone so far as to label the ministry a cult or suggest sinister motives without presenting clear evidence to support those conclusions.

As Christians, we should ask ourselves a simple question:

Is this how Scripture tells us to handle these situations?

The Bible Warns Against Rash Judgment

Jesus never instructed His followers to believe every rumor they hear.

Instead, He said:

"Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." — John 7:24

Righteous judgment requires patience.

It requires evidence.

It requires wisdom.

Most importantly, it requires humility.

Too often today, people make life-changing accusations based on edited clips, anonymous social media posts, or secondhand stories. That isn't biblical discernment—it is often the opposite.

What Has Ramp Ministries Actually Produced?

Whether someone personally agrees with every sermon, every worship style, or every decision made by a ministry, another question deserves consideration:

What fruit has the ministry produced?

For decades, Ramp Ministries has reached young people from around the world. Many who have attended their conferences testify that they found hope, freedom from addiction, renewed faith, or a restored relationship with Christ.

Hamilton, Alabama—a small town that once struggled economically—has also experienced renewed activity connected with the ministry's presence.

That alone does not make any ministry perfect.

No church is perfect.

No pastor is perfect.

No Christian is perfect.

But accusations deserve to be measured against evidence, not assumptions.

Christians Must Stop Becoming the Devil's Loudspeaker

One of the greatest tragedies in modern Christianity is how quickly believers sometimes repeat accusations about one another.

Scripture repeatedly warns against gossip, slander, false witness, and sowing discord among brethren.

Those commands were not written for unbelievers.

They were written for us.

Every time we repeat something that has not been verified, we risk damaging reputations, dividing churches, and discouraging people who are sincerely trying to serve God.

That should concern every believer.

Waiting on God's Timing

One theme I return to often is this:

The devil rushes people. God teaches patience.

Throughout Scripture, God rarely works on humanity's timetable.

Abraham waited.

Joseph waited.

David waited.

The apostles waited.

Even Jesus waited until the Father's appointed time.

When controversy arises, perhaps the wisest response is not to immediately choose sides but to seek God first.

Prayer should always come before public condemnation.

Generation Z Needs Hope—Not More Division

Today's young people are growing up in one of the most spiritually confusing periods in modern history.

They are bombarded with distractions, competing worldviews, addiction, anxiety, and constant online influence.

If there are ministries genuinely pointing them toward Christ, encouraging repentance, worship, and biblical discipleship, Christians should be careful before becoming instruments of division.

The Church has enough enemies already.

It does not need believers tearing one another apart over rumors.

Stand for Truth

Standing for truth sometimes means exposing genuine corruption.

Other times, it means refusing to participate in accusations that have not been proven.

Both require courage.

Both require discernment.

As Christians, our loyalty should never be to personalities, denominations, or internet influencers.

Our loyalty belongs to Jesus Christ.

If wrongdoing exists anywhere, God is fully capable of bringing it into the light.

But until facts—not speculation—are established, believers should exercise wisdom, charity, and restraint.

The Church is strongest when it is united around truth rather than divided by rumor.

May we always remember the words of Christ:

"Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." (John 7:24)
