Italian Day transforms Commercial Drive into a lively celebration of Italian culture, stretching across 14 blocks filled with music, food, performances, and community spirit. The Drive comes alive with piazza-style gathering spaces, outdoor patios, vendors, and plenty of opportunities to capture the energy of the festival.

If the crowds become overwhelming, there are plenty of cafés, bakeries, and eateries along the route. Venture onto the side streets and you’ll also find charming heritage homes, colourful gardens, and quieter sketching spots.

Join us for a sketch meetup in the civic heart of Coquitlam’s City Centre. This open plaza connects City Hall, the RCMP building, and nearby community spaces like Glen Pine Pavilion, and offers a mix of architecture, movement, and playful public design.

This is a surprisingly varied sketching location. The plaza includes stairs, tiered levels, public seating, swings, a slide, and ping pong tables—alongside sculptural and artistic elements that make it a great place to observe both structure and activity. It’s a space where formal civic architecture meets everyday use, which gives plenty of interesting contrasts to draw.

In case of rain, both the nearby Café Divano and Glen Pine Pavillion offer indoor areas where we can find shelter and interesting sketch subjects.

Artist talks

The Sunday afternoon sessions start off with artist talks. We’ll have artist and Art Toolkit founder Maria Coryell-Martin, and local watercolour artist Kris Balisacan give artist talks. They’ll be sharing invaluable insights to their art journey and processes. Maria will provide a framework to transform your creative passion into purposeful projects while Kris will show how he captures the feeling of a place through his experience of painting watercolour sketches on location.

All the workshops are sold out except for one remaining spot in Maris’s workshop. Don’t miss this opportunity!

Hangout (sketchbook sharing, art supplies exchange, etc.)

After the artist talks we’ll be doing sketchbook sharing, art supplies exchange, and general hang outs where you’ll have a great time talking to other artists and networking. Through sketchbook sharing, you’ll discover new styles, useful tips and interesting stories in other artists’ artwork. In the art supplies exchange, you can bring unused or gently-loved art supplies you’d like to pass along and pick up some others have brought if you want to try it out.

The Sunday sessions at Zameen Art House will start at 12 pm on May 31st. The venue will be open at 11:30 am.

Urban Sketchers Vancouver is hosting the second edition of #USkVan Sketch Weekend on Granville Island on May 30th and 31st, 2026. Here are some terms you should know to have a better idea of the event and urban sketching in general.

What is Urban Sketching in the first place?

Urban sketching is the practice of drawing on location, indoors and out, capturing what we see from direct observation. The purpose of urban sketching is to record the time and place and to tell the story of our surroundings, the places where we live, and where we travel. Urban Sketchers is the global non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the artistic and educational values of urban sketching, and we, Urban Sketchers Vancouver, is one of its official chapters.

You can use any media for urban sketching, and all skill levels and styles are welcome. The essential element for urban sketching is capturing a scene where you are, what you are witnessing and experiencing at the place. Although you could refer to photos to finish up your drawing, if you start to draw from photos or work on your memory or imagination, it is not an urban sketch. The drawings have to be initially done on location and tell a story of the setting you are in. It’s nothing complicated. Just be truthful to the scene, draw what you see and have fun!

Key urban sketching terms

Meetup

Urban sketching groups host meetups where sketchers meet and draw together. Typically, we first meet up at a specific location and then disperse to draw what we like. After a couple of hours, we converge to share the results with each other. USk Vancouver hosts meetups, generally every other week. Find meetup information here. There is no need to sign up to attend our meetups. You can just show up and join us.

Host

A host organizes a meetup and leads the group. The main duties include choosing a location, preparing a meetup description for social media posts, welcoming participants and facilitating the meetup. No experience or skill is required to be a host. We always seek enthusiastic people who are willing to host meetups. If you are, let us know!

Sketch throwdown

At the end of a meetup, we “throw down” (lay down) our sketches and show them to each other. This is where we share stories, learn from other sketchers and exchange tips and information about sketching. There are no critiques and we purely appreciate each other’s work.

Visual storytelling

Urban sketchers tell the story of a place through drawing on location. The work has to capture an event or a moment at the place and show context, characters and setting.

What you can expect from the Sketch Weekend

Workshop

Urban sketching workshops are hands-on sessions where instructors teach skills and techniques for on-location drawing and visual storytelling. The workshops cover a variety of artistic topics such as composition, materials and creative approaches. Sketchwalk

Sketchwalks are social gatherings where sketchers meet and draw together. What is different from meetups is that sketchwalks generally involve walking through an area and sketching at multiple locations along a route. At #USkVan Sketch Weekend 2026, we will host guided sketchwalks led by four artists, who will share their styles through demonstrations. Unlike the workshops, these sketchwalks are informal sessions, focusing more on sharing approaches while drawing across multiple locations than on structured teaching or specific exercises. Artist talk

Artist talks are informative and inspiring sessions where artists give talks on their approaches, passions, creative processes and the stories behind their sketches. At #USkVan Sketch Weekend 2026, we will feature two artists, who will present their unique approaches to sketching. Learn more here.

Demo/sketch demonstration

Through demonstrations, artists show how they approach and capture a scene. At #USkVan Sketch Weekend 2026, both workshops and sketchwalks include demonstrations by instructors or leading artists.
