When we hear the word “consent,” we often think about human relationships. Yet consent plays an equally important role in our relationships with animals.

Many of us seek out animals because we love physical connection. We enjoy petting them, holding them, cuddling with them, and sharing quiet moments. These experiences can be deeply meaningful and healing.

However, one question is worth asking: Does my animal want this right now?

Why Consent Matters

From a young age, many animals are expected to tolerate handling. Puppies are picked up and carried. Kittens are held and passed around. Even larger animals, such as horses, are often expected to accept physical contact simply because humans initiate it.

Yet animals are individuals.

Just like people, they have different comfort levels, personalities, histories, and nervous systems. Some animals actively seek touch and physical closeness. Others prefer shorter interactions or more personal space.

Neither preference is right or wrong.

Understanding the Nervous System

One of the most important things I have learned through living and working with animals is that nervous systems vary tremendously.

I currently share my life with two pets. One enjoys far more physical contact than the other. Even after years together, I do my best to allow them to initiate most interactions. When they approach me, lean into me, or seek me out, I know they are choosing connection.

That choice matters.

Too often, we assume our animals are always available to meet our emotional needs. Yet our desire to cuddle, hold, or pet them may be serving us more than it serves them in that moment.

The Subtle Language of Consent

Animals communicate through body language.

The challenge is that many of their signals are incredibly subtle.

A cat may suddenly flick their tail or shift away after a few moments of petting.

A dog may turn their head, avoid eye contact, lean away, yawn, lick their lips, or gently move out of reach.

These behaviors are not necessarily signs of disobedience or rejection. They are information.

They are saying, “This is enough for me right now.”

Many animals are remarkably patient. They often communicate their discomfort softly and repeatedly before showing stronger signs. By the time a dog growls or reacts defensively, they may have already offered numerous signals that went unnoticed.

Are We Truly Present?

Consent invites us to become more aware.

When we pet our animals while scrolling on our phones, watching television, or thinking about something else, we may miss important communication.

What changes when we become fully present?

What happens when we observe rather than assume?

Can we notice when our animal moves toward us rather than away from us?

Can we recognize when they have reached their limit?

These small moments of awareness can profoundly deepen trust.

Treating Animals as Partners

When I think about consent, I think about respect.

In human relationships, we ask questions. We pay attention to verbal and nonverbal responses. We recognize that someone may welcome closeness one day and need space the next.

Animals deserve that same consideration.

They may not answer with words, but they communicate clearly through movement, posture, energy, and behavior.

Approaching them as partners rather than passive recipients of our affection can transform the relationship.

An Invitation

Over the next week, try observing your animal more closely.

Notice how they respond to touch.

Notice when they initiate contact.

Notice when they move away.

Notice whether their preferences change depending on the time of day, their energy level, or other factors in their environment.

You may discover that consent is not simply about avoiding discomfort. It is about creating a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and understanding.

And that kind of relationship is one of the greatest gifts we can offer the animals who share our lives.

It has been a few months since my little dog Pablo passed away.

Pablo was the longest canine resident in my household, one of the few animals who came to me as a young dog.

Life is different now. We are all doing okay here. I still share my home with another dog and a kitty, both of whom are doing really well. And at the same time, there is an undeniable absence, the absence of one of my animal soulmates.

I can still feel Pablo’s presence. His essence is here with us.

What I didn’t fully anticipate was how profoundly his passing would change my work.

A More Direct, More Honest Way of Working

Over the past months, my work has become more direct. You might even say more radical.

Why is that?

I shared my life with a complex being for many years. Pablo was not “just” a dog - he was a teacher, a mirror, and a deeply sentient soul with his own inner logic and emotional landscape. Living alongside him sharpened my awareness in ways that continue even now.

I am more conscious than ever that our companion animals have chosen to live within a human construct. Their templates, the way they experience reality, relationships, and the environment, are not the same as ours. And yet, we so often interpret their behavior exclusively through human frameworks, rules, and expectations.

At this point in my work, I want to cut to the chase. I want to understand how they actually feel and how they experience life with us.
What makes sense to them—even when it doesn’t make sense to us.

Moving Beyond Conventional Paradigms

Many of us have been taught a set of common denominators about animals:

We have to be the alpha.
We have to lead in a certain way.
We have to manage, correct, or override.

And while some of these ideas may offer structure, they often miss the deeper reality beneath the surface.

I am far more interested in helping my clients understand how their animals think and feel, and why certain behaviors or responses make perfect sense from the animal’s perspective - even when they defy conventional ideas about animal care or husbandry.

If you’ve ever felt that disconnect, where you’re taught one thing, but you’re witnessing something different with your animal, this may be an invitation to look deeper.

What Our Animals Pick Up On - Whether We Realize It or Not

Recently, I worked with someone deeply committed to her animals. She goes all in. She doesn’t shy away from support or intervention, including working with me.

What she had completely underestimated was how attuned her dogs were to internal struggles within the human family, specifically related to starting a new relationship.

The dogs picked up on the internal wrestling, the emotional shifts, the unspoken tensions.

When this became aware, there was surprise, openness, and a willingness to include this layer of truth in how they understood their animals’ behavior.

Our animals are not just responding to routines and commands. They are responding to our inner worlds.

A Time to Go Deeper

If you want to understand what’s happening beneath the surface and how our companion animals are coping with life inside a human construct, this may be the time.

We are moving into the Year of the Fire Horse, 2026. A year associated with forward movement, momentum, and expanded consciousness. And that expansion includes our animals. It includes how we listen, how we relate, and how honestly we are willing to see.

It also includes animals that have passed and whose spirits remain.

In my home, that is Pablo.

He was one of my greatest teachers, clear in his signals, precise in how he lived, and unmistakably intentional in how he died.

All I can say is this:

Thank you, Pablo. You made me more authentic. You made me more real. And I am forever, deeply grateful.

When someone we love is grieving, we often don’t know what to say — so we default to “Let me know if there’s anything I can do.” But grief makes it hard to reach out or even know what’s needed.

In this short video, we explore gentle, meaningful ways to actually support a grieving friend — from offering specific help to simply being present with compassion and quiet understanding.

Whether you’ve recently lost someone or want to show up better for a friend, this video offers language and approaches that bring comfort, not pressure.

✨ A slight shift in how we show up can make a world of difference for someone in pain.

We often assign many different labels to dogs, such as being the “Alpha”, being submissive, and so on.

I don’t believe that a dog is always the alpha, for example. We may observe assertive, submissive, or fearful behavior, depending on the circumstances and stimuli. My understanding is that there are two primary modes that affect dogs’ behavior: the feeling of safety and the feeling of danger.

Behavior is very strongly affected by how safe an animal feels. Feeling insecure can exacerbate existing fears or lead to the development of new ones. Insecurity also undermines the ability to learn, and the stress it causes can have both physiological and behavioral consequences. A sense of safety is vital to overcoming fear.

You’re probably aware of the term” from the neck up”. This also applies to our canines. The main sensory experiences happen in the head region: sniffing, biting, chewing, licking, and, of course, vocalizing. When a dog is very fearful, they are often not aware of their body below the neck. You might see a rigid posture, cowering, possibly lunging, not being on all four feet, to name a few.

So how can we create a sense of safety for our dogs?
​

Here are some pointers:

• Create a routine that includes adequate exercise and downtime

• Avoid flooding the nervous system - learn about stress signals, pay attention to your dog’s body language

• Allow our dog to choose being petted or being picked up

• Be mindful of your own neediness for physical affection from your pets

• Coach your visitors about the dos and don’ts of approaching our dog

• Avoid forced leash meetings with other dogs

• Be ALERT and watchful when you’re in a dog park; don’t scroll on your phone.

• Try a TTouch wrap or a thunder shirt to support sensory integration and a sense of safety

• Consider calming supplements and remedies

• Scan yourself for internal stress and tension, which might be mirrored in the demeanor of your dog

• Rule out medical issues

Accept your pup; nobody is perfect.

Here is my dog Pablo modeling a TTouch half wrap - a thunder shirt is too overwhelming for his nervous system. He wore this wrap frequently in the first year of living with us because he became overstimulated in a millisecond by almost everything - sounds, people, and other animals.

​Over time, Pablo learned to reset his nervous system.
Does he still get over-aroused? Yes, but less frequently.
​Does he still go into autopilot with a sense of danger? Yes, once in a while, BUT he recovers - quickly.
​Pablo learned to relax! And it goes without saying that I love him to the moon and back.

Pablo has since crossed over. His gentle lessons live on in my heart, and his spirit is with me every day.

Two years ago, I became the adopted mother of an African elephant, and my boy’s name is Shujaa, which means Hero in Swahili.

Now that I have your attention, I'd like to share with you my passion for elephants. Aside from living and breathing my passion for domestic animals, I also have a soft spot for wild creatures, particularly whales, wild horses, and elephants.

As a child, I fantasized about living in Africa, surrounded by wildlife. While my life took a slightly different turn with some detours to Asia before I moved to the US, my fascination with elephants, the wisdom keepers of the earth, never ceased.

I have always been captivated by elephants' intelligence, deep sense of family, and profound emotional intelligence. They remember the earth’s secrets, a testament to their wisdom and resilience.

The matriarchs lead their herds through any terrain to ensure their survival. It is also well-documented that elephants grieve their dead and that an entire group of females, including aunties, protects newborn calves, not just the mother.

Wild elephants, among the oldest land mammals alive, face numerous challenges in the wild, from habitat loss due to human encroachment to the devastating effects of poaching.

For many years, I have actively supported African and Asian conservation groups that protect wildlife and endangered species and help local communities.

That’s where I learned about Shujaa, a rescued elephant orphan who found refuge with Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. The organization rescues and rehabilitates youngsters like Shujaa and conducts vital research, community outreach, and anti-poaching efforts.

I felt the spell of love in action and adopted him. Boy, I am hooked. I did not know a long-distance love affair would make my heart deliriously happy.

I receive updates about Shujaa and the other elephant orphans and their journey to re-wilding each month. Reintroducing them to the wild can take many years and requires careful monitoring.

I can tell you that I am giddy with excitement when I read Shujaa’s keepers’ diaries, learn about his shenanigans, and watch how he’s growing, romping around, and making new friends.

I also receive updates on preserving the “lungs” of Kenya. In Kenya, montane forests are essential to the country’s health, providing clean air, regulating water flow, and supporting biodiversity. Several organizations are actively involved in their preservation, recognizing the importance of these ecosystems for both wildlife and local communities. I hope to visit Kenya soon to see these efforts firsthand — and to meet my boy in person, of course!

Here in Africa, Kenya is known for its commitment to conservation. The country is home to 27 national parks and 34 national reserves — yet collectively, these comprise just 8 percent of Kenya’s land. However, increased initiatives to secure wilderness outside national parks and reserves also exist. Conservancies and other creative conservation projects have been formed to protect essential landscapes further. These dedicated spaces for wildlife are vitally important — and, in an age of relentless development, their existence must never be taken for granted.

When I first wrote this piece, Shujaa was in the Nairobi orphan nursery.

This year, in August, he graduated from the Nairobi nursery and graduated to the Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park.

It is beautiful to have this connection with Africa, to contribute in a small but meaningful way, and to feel Shujaa’s heart beating with mine.

​The other day, I came across one of my write-ups about my first “official “ hospice dog. I took her in right before Christmas several years ago.

Shanti, a little chihuahua mix, would have been euthanized at the local shelter due to a myriad of health issues and her advanced age.

Let me tell you that many people rallied for her so that I could bust her out and take care of her.

Shanti was my first dog with advanced CDS — canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

Shanti got agitated and restless at night, which was most nights.

It was no walk in the park, mainly because I experienced increasing sleep deprivation and fatigue.

There is no one treatment or cure for CDS - CDS is a slowly progressive disease.

In Shanti’s own words:
Wow, my life sure has changed! I no longer live behind prison bars; I am finally not lonely or afraid of being forgotten anymore.

Yeah! Consider yourselves licked in the face. I am so much happier now.

I want to eat all the time and get yummy food with some strange morsels. My mom calls these “supplements,” whatever that is.

I also go on long walks with my big dog brother, Jonah. Boy, does he need to run to keep up with me? Life is GOOD.

One of my aunties made me a beautiful purple fleece coat for the great outdoors. I am very fashion-conscious and get cold quickly, so I wanted something comfortable.

Unfortunately, my memory is not what it used to be. I often get stuck in corners and don’t know how to get out of them. Who invented corners?

I also run in circles at night, many, many circles, and I hardly ever get tired. Sleep? Nada. My head starts buzzing when it gets dark.

CDS — Clinical signs:

Disorientation — Getting lost in familiar places, stuck in corners, staring into space

Interaction changes — Suddenly clingy or avoidant, not recognizing familiar people.

Sleep pattern changes — Wandering the house at night, sleeping more during the day

House-soiling — Urinating or defecating indoors when they were previously house-trained

Anxiety — Increased anxiety, new phobias, irritability, aggression

Life would be perfect if my heart weren’t as big as a baseball. The vet says that I have heart disease and a grade 5/6 murmur. You see, this makes me uncomfortable and scared; that’s why I have a hard time settling down.

My person is exhausted because she needs more beauty rest than I do. At least, that’s what I think. These days, she gives me a pill at night; she says it is a “sedative.” I say, as long as it’s yummy, I take it!

I still wake her up in the wee hours and want to snuggle; then I jump around because it is so hard to be still. My other fur siblings are calm and quiet at night. I wonder how they do it.

Mom believes my spirit is not resting because of my enlarged heart.

My heart is big because it’s filled with love and has grown in size.

One of our human friends did a strange — but I must admit — wonderful thing with me. It’s called a soul retrieval. Please do not ask me what that is; I have no idea. All I know is that I was more relaxed afterward, which made my mom (and me) happy.

After all these years of misery, I’m no longer treated like a dumb dog, but like someone with a soul.

They say it takes a village.

It takes an ocean of love, and I gave and received love a million times in return. What a blessing!

I learned so much about living with a CDS dog. It expanded my capacity to be present with an open heart, even when I was at my limit.

Would I do it again? Yes. Do I want to inspire you not to get discouraged when you have a pet with special needs? Yes.

Is CDS challenging? Yes. Does every animal deserve dignity? Absolutely.

Shanti experienced the sunset of her life in my home, and I am so glad for that. She passed away in the Spring of the following year.

“Om Shanti Om” is a Sanskrit mantra meaning “Om, peace, peace, peace.” It’s a prayer for peace and harmony, often used in Hindu and Buddhist practices. Chanting it three times invokes peace on multiple levels: physical, mental, and spiritual, or from external, internal, and divine sources.

Pablo is fifteen years old now, meandering around on his creaky little spider legs, with his never-ending cough, and the pee, well, it is harder to contain. That’s what paper towels are for, right?

He gradually dims the light, but the life bulbs are still strong; they’re just a little flickery sometimes.

Pablo came to me as a young, undersocialized dog via a shelter transfer from Southern California in 2012.

Pablo was scared, reactive, and high-strung, and his nervous system was in constant fight-or-flight mode.

My beagle, Toddy, taught Pablo how to dog by modeling a mellow, neutral demeanor. Pablo fell instantly in love with him and remained his faithful disciple until Toddy died in 2015.

After Toddy’s death, Pablo was inconsolable and took refuge with my cats, who patiently tolerated his behavior, especially when he followed them around to sniff their behinds. They would have given him the side eye had they not sensed how desperately he needed them. Thank you, cats.

After Toddy’s death, Pablo really wanted a girlfriend (besides me), so I went shopping for a mail-order bride and found our wild little miss, Meelah.

Initially, she was a handful since she had never attended manners classes for chihuahua bachelors. It took her a while to learn how to read him, and eventually, they became husband and wife.

Another cornerstone of Pablo’s life happened after the death of his original cat friends; he raised our beautiful cat, Esme, who came to us as a baby, and became her patient mentor.

Our Meelah passed away in 2022 and left a big hole in our hearts. Pablo was a widower for about two years. Truth be told, he enjoyed being the center of attention and doted on his cat daughter Esme. They love each other.

Fast-forward to current times:
We adopted another senior dog, Gunnar, who has made our lives complete again. The two old men enjoy a genuine bromance.

So, where are we now? I am busy tending to Pablo’s myriad health issues and counting the blessings of each good day.

It’s the sunset of Pablo’s life, and as long as he enjoys himself, I will do whatever it takes to make him comfortable.

My heart is whole.

How do I describe the never-ending journey to the promised land?

When the sun comes in, I feel invincible and free.

Trust becomes my home state. Will it last?
