Making space for difficult conversations

How UX and behavioural science helped include customers experiencing vulnerability.

How do you research difficult experiences without making the research experience more difficult for participants? In this talk, UX Designer Olga Drewnowska and Behavioural Scientist Bryony Williams from Standard Life share how their collaboration helped pave the way for conducting sensitive research more safely, thoughtfully and inclusively, and how it increased confidence in tackling similar research across the organisation.

Using examples from serious ill health, bereavement and research with visually impaired users, they share lessons learned and practical approaches for engaging vulnerable audiences. Attendees will leave with ideas they can apply within their teams and organisations to make often overlooked voices more visible and better represented in the design process.

Olga Drewnowska is a UX Designer of 6 years at Standard Life, specialising in making financial services flows simpler and more modern on both app and web, with a strong focus on accessibility and user research.

Bryony Williams is a Behavioural Scientist at Standard Life. She has 5 years of experience helping teams understand customer behaviour and apply behavioural science to improve customer experiences and outcomes.

How patriarchal systems shape women’s financial futures.

Every pension product carries traces of the people who built it, their expectations and their idea of what a “normal” user looks like. These assumptions quietly shape services that exclude women. In this session, Afreen Saulat will use lived examples to show how historical patriarchal systems, from coverture laws to gendered credit scoring, have embedded bias into pensions, mortgages and algorithmic underwriting. She will offer pragmatic solutions for auditing sampling and labelling bias, and share how building smaller, higher quality AI models can reduce discrimination. Participants will leave with a framework for historical impact auditing and practical tools to take back to their teams.

Afreen is a digital anthropologist and founder of 100kicks, a creative research consultancy helping teams design with care. Her work explores how systemic bias embeds itself into financial services and what designers can do about it. She has spoken at MozFest and writes the Fiction Informs Reality newsletter on imagination and futures.

We’re now 3 years into the AI revolution launched by ChatGPT but organisations don’t seem to be improving their digital services. With ‘enshittification’, online services, websites and apps seem to be worse than they were before the AI era. User Interfaces are buggy, the job market is worse for new entrants and companies aren’t making the savings they expected from AI adoption.

Talk 1: Practical steps towards a more inclusive practice

There is a false belief that making your design accessible requires more time, more money, and technical expertise. In this talk, Stéphanie shares simple, practical steps to improve the accessibility of your design, take digital inclusion into account and have a more inclusive practice, quickly and without new tools or training.

Aimed at people relatively new to inclusion and accessibility, the talk focuses on easy ways to improve accessibility, consider digital inclusion, and focus your research on the groups that will give you the most valuable insights

Stéphanie Krus is a French native designer with a strong focus on accessibility, inclusion, and service design. You can find resources around accessibility and inclusion on her blog. She is a previous co-organiser or UX Glasgow, and we are excited to have her as a speaker for our May meetup.

Talk 2: Designing beyond assumptions: how everyday constraints shape user experience

Every product and service carries traces of the people who built it, their expectations, and their idea of what a “normal” user does. Similarly, designing within organisations means working with deadlines, pressure, and a lot of best guesses. These assumptions can quietly shape services that exclude users. In this session, Kola will use lived examples to show how small design choices can create significant barriers.

We’ll explore the practical use of ethnographic research and context-based design through test and learn, to help teams slow down at the right moment and understand the real-world constraints users face.

Kola Wale is a senior service designer at the Department for Work and Pensions, where he focuses on improving how people experience public services.

What to expect

Oona (designer) and Kelsie (developer) will lead us on an evening of looking at the design/development handoff.

The session will begin with a talk exploring collaboration between designers and developers within product teams. While they often work closely together, effective collaboration is not always guaranteed. Oona (designer) and Kelsie (developer) will highlight three common barriers that can hinder teamwork, sharing real experiences and practical approaches to better align design and development.

In the second part of the session, participants will be invited to reflect on their own experiences. Attendees will write down situations related to the challenges discussed—or introduce additional ones we may not have considered. These contributions will then serve as the basis for a panel discussion to close the evening.

Decarbonising user journeys

“As an Environmental Science graduate and UX professional, I was shocked to learn that the internet is responsible for higher global carbon emissions than the aviation industry. Digital feels like an invisible and infinite resource but it is actually physical due to the infrastructure that drives it, such as vast, power hungry data centres.

The experiences that we design have a direct impact on the environment due to the emissions from the energy that is required to deliver them to our users. So as digital professionals we are actively (and often unknowingly) contributing to the climate crisis, but knowing what to do differently and where to start can feel overwhelming.

In order to design more sustainable experiences we must adapt our practice to focus on maximising the value we create from the minimum input of energy.

But what does this look like in practice and how can you get started?

In this talk I’ll share a simple and pragmatic digital decarbonisation approach that helps UX professionals to ‘think global, act local’ by focussing on minimising the carbon footprint of your highest value user journeys.”

About the speaker

James Chudley has been a UX professional for 26 years and works as an independent design consultant focussing on reducing the environmental impact of the internet.

His consulting experience spans the gamut of design practice from shaping projects and leading programmes of work, to leading the delivery of user-centred research, strategy and service design projects for clients across all sectors.

Our own Bobby King will talk about how data mining and machine learning are transforming how organisations store and share data.

“As the amount of information we collect increases, designers need to think about how to give people access to data and understand it. I’ll explain some ways of making complex data accessible to staff, customers and citizens. I’ll also cover how to combine new techniques like AI prompts with established UCD approaches, including user research and content design.”

Lou Millar-MacHugh is a Gen Z UX and Interaction Designer from Glasgow with a Digital Media & Interaction Design degree from Edinburgh Napier University.

“By day, I run Digital and Comms for a group of pizza restaurants, but my true passion lies in ethical technology and social media literacy. I advocate for understanding how technology, particularly social media, functions in a profit-focused culture, challenging traditional persuasive design to promote design beyond engagement metrics. I strive to create a more conscious digital landscape through my TikTok, Substack newsletter, and pro bono consultancy work. I use they/he pronouns.”

Big Government Design: User-Centred Design for long-term government projects

Bobby King is a UX Glasgow organiser and a freelance UX designer.

“I’ve spent most of my career working on complex digital transformation projects which run over several years. I’ve worked in pure research as well as working hands on with code. For me, the most important skills of a designer are collaboration and critical thinking. I’ve learned my approach from authors like Erika Hall, Indi Young and Heydon Pickering.”
