He was raised in collision.

Born in the Bronx in 1971 and brought to Washington Heights as a young child, Vernon grew up fatherless in a neighborhood that was rapidly transforming into one of the most volatile epicenters of the American War on Drugs. His mother carried the weight of raising five children alone, navigating welfare systems, food stamps, and long workdays while the streets outside evolved into an open-air economy fueled by cocaine, heroin, cash, and survival.

By the time Vernon was old enough to understand the word “system,” he was already living inside one.

Washington Heights in the 1980s was not simply a neighborhood — it was a laboratory. A place where immigration, poverty, ambition, and narcotics collided. Dominican families arrived seeking opportunity. African American families were already rooted there, bearing the generational weight of segregation and economic exclusion. Law enforcement presence intensified. Money flooded in. So did violence.

Vernon did not observe this transformation from a distance. He walked through it.

As a young Black boy growing up among predominantly Dominican peers, he learned adaptation early. Language. Codes. Respect. Street etiquette. He learned how to read rooms before he entered them. He learned how to survive conversations. He learned how power moved — not in textbooks, but in stairwells, rooftops, and corner stores.

He also learned what it meant to be statistically disposable.

The numbers were never in his favor. Fatherless household. Urban district. Drug-saturated environment. Police pressure. Limited educational guidance. Every predictive model suggested incarceration, addiction, or death.

He chose none of them.

Instead, he became a navigator.

Vernon entered the underground economy not out of thrill-seeking rebellion but out of proximity and practicality. The streets were hiring. The streets were paying. The streets offered immediate validation in a world where traditional systems offered delay, denial, or humiliation. He participated in the drug trade during an era when the lines between survival and destruction blurred daily.

But even inside that world, he operated by a code.

He did not romanticize addiction. He did not glorify violence. He did not build his name through chaos. Those who knew him understood he was measured. Strategic. Observant. Often the calm voice in volatile rooms. He witnessed shootings, funerals, raids, betrayals, and psychological collapses — and yet he maintained composure.

The nickname “Black Knight” was not about intimidation. It was about endurance.

In his twenties and thirties, Vernon expanded beyond street-level hustle. He transitioned into large-scale marijuana cultivation years before legalization normalized the practice. He studied lighting systems, ventilation, hydroponics, real estate positioning, supply chains, and personnel management. What the state labeled illegal, he approached with agricultural precision and entrepreneurial discipline.

For over a decade, he operated in secrecy — not recklessly, but methodically — building systems, managing risk, and providing product to a market that would later be absorbed and taxed by the very institutions that once criminalized it.

He experienced arrests. He experienced raids. He experienced surveillance. Yet he never served long-term prison time, a statistical anomaly given his environment.

What he did serve was pressure.

Pressure from law enforcement.
Pressure from financial responsibility.
Pressure from relationships.
Pressure from maintaining loyalty in ecosystems built on fear.

During this period, Vernon also crossed state lines — from Washington Heights to Bergen County, from New York to Miami, from New Jersey highways to Puerto Rican coastlines — navigating dual identities: street strategist by night, family provider by day.

He raised four children.

To them, he was not a war survivor. He was father. Provider. Present.

He paid bills others avoided. He absorbed risk others benefited from. He created financial stability that many around him depended on — and many later distanced themselves from when the numbers shifted.

He has openly acknowledged that money became an addiction of its own — not for luxury, but for security. For insulation. For ensuring his children would never feel the absence he felt growing up without a father.

Then the collapse came.

Business shifts. Legal exposure. Relationship breakdown. COVID-era isolation. The death of his mother — a pillar in his emotional architecture — fractured him more deeply than any police raid ever could.

For four years, Vernon battled depression privately. He traveled to Puerto Rico in search of clarity. He questioned identity, loyalty, legacy, and self-worth. Friends disappeared. Partners left. Financial structures dissolved. The man who once moved hundreds of pounds of product with logistical elegance found himself moving through grief alone.

And yet — he did not disappear.

Instead, he picked up a microphone.

Writing became excavation.

He began documenting his life not as confession, not as glorification, but as testimony. His work evolved into what he now calls “Poetic Cinema” — a hybrid of memoir, sociological reflection, street philosophy, and emotional archive. His voice carries cadence influenced by 80s and 90s hip-hop, street sermons, documentary narration, and internal prayer.

His themes are not subtle.

He questions systemic hypocrisy.
He challenges legalized vice versus criminalized survival.
He examines the psychology of addiction — not only to drugs, but to money, status, and validation.
He critiques digital culture and emotional numbness.
He reflects on masculinity, betrayal, race, dignity, and survival ethics.

But he also emphasizes something rarely found in former street narratives:

Restraint.

He has stated repeatedly that he never killed anyone for money. Never destroyed a family to prove power. Never turned informant to save himself. Whether one agrees with every interpretation of history he presents or not, what remains clear is this: his moral compass operated within a code he refuses to deny.

Vernon does not claim sainthood.

He claims survival.

His perspective on Washington Heights is neither purely celebratory nor purely bitter. It is observational. He watched a neighborhood transform from abandoned buildings and heroin corridors into bustling nightlife, open-air drug markets, then into gentrifying storefronts and legal cannabis dispensaries — many selling the same product he once risked his freedom to cultivate.

He calls this irony. He calls it systemic evolution. He calls it a game.

Now in his fifties, Vernon sees himself not as a victim, not as a hero, but as a witness.

He believes that statistics failed to account for him because statistics rarely account for will. He believes the War on Drugs damaged communities more psychologically than financially. He believes media glamorized destruction under the banner of success. He believes dignity matters more than status. And he believes survival without bitterness is the ultimate rebellion.

He also believes love is central.

Despite betrayal, despite loss, despite feeling used by systems and individuals alike, Vernon continues to speak about empathy. About honoring parents. About protecting children from illusions of fast power. About resisting the urge to retaliate.

His writing is raw, rhythmic, confrontational, and reflective — sometimes within the same paragraph. It is not polished academia. It is lived testimony shaped by memory and cadence. He writes for those who survived similar wars silently.

He does not seek validation from the institutions he critiques.

He seeks documentation.

Vernon Snell is a man who lived multiple eras in one lifetime — crack epidemic, mass incarceration, underground cannabis expansion, digital transformation, and legalization economics — and survived each without losing his ability to reflect.

He has been called many things.

Hustler.
Entrepreneur.
Provider.
Manipulator.
Protector.
Street philosopher.

Today, he prefers one word:

Alive.

His work stands as a reminder that not all war stories end in graves. Some end in microphones. Some end in books. Some end in men who refuse to let their narrative be written by headlines.

He is not asking for sympathy.
He is not asking for absolution.

He is offering record.

And in an era where noise replaces memory, that may be the most radical act of all.

Instead of Birthday Gifts, Help Build a the case.

Freedom.

But freedom can be expensive.

Only a couple of months later…

there I was again.

Yonkers.

Another grow.

Another arrest.

Another courtroom.

Another chapter.

This time they offered me five years.

Not prison.

Probation.

I asked them for one.

They refused.

By then…

I had run out of money.

Sometimes people don’t plead because they’re guilty.

Sometimes people plead because they’re broke.

There is a difference.

People ask me if I regret it.

I don’t even know how to answer.

I grew up in Washington Heights.

I watched words become more dangerous than actions.

One of those words…

was illegal.

That single word shaped neighborhoods.

Created fortunes.

Destroyed families.

Filled prisons.

Paid lawyers.

Built careers.

Ended dreams.

All because of…

a plant.

Not cocaine.

Not heroin.

Not fentanyl.

A plant.

Years passed.

The world kept spinning.

Governments changed.

Laws changed.

Stores opened.

Investors smiled.

Politicians celebrated.

Now…

marijuana sits behind glass cases.

Bright lights.

Security guards.

Credit card machines.

Receipts.

Taxes.

Billion-dollar corporations.

People walk in smiling.

Walk out smiling.

Nobody whispers anymore.

Nobody hides anymore.

Nobody looks over their shoulder.

The same plant.

The same smell.

The same leaf.

Only the definition changed.

Sometimes I wonder…

What if I had accepted eight years in New Jersey?

Would I have missed watching my children grow?

Would my businesses have ever existed?

Would Poetic Cinema have ever been born?

Would these words exist?

One signature…

could have erased an entire future.

That thought still follows me.

Not with anger.

Not with revenge.

Just curiosity.

Life planted me inside a game where one word decided everything.

Illegal.

Today…

that same word has been replaced with another.

Legal.

The plant never defended itself.

It never changed its color.

It never changed its scent.

It never apologized.

Only people changed their minds.

I still keep the newspaper.

Years ago, it made me feel like a loser.

Today…

it’s something else.

It’s evidence.

Not evidence of a crime.

Evidence of a life.

Evidence of an era.

Evidence that history can rewrite itself while the people who lived it continue carrying the memories.

Some people collect trophies.

Some people collect photographs.

I collected scars.

This newspaper is one of them.

A single page.

A single picture.

A single reminder…

of how one plant became one of the most expensive lessons of my life.

Poetic Cinema.

Flowers Don’t Chase spilled across the forest.

The birds sang.

The river laughed over the rocks.

The wind carried the scent of pine.

Everything in nature had awakened…

Except peace.

Rusty the squirrel wasn’t looking for acorns.

He wasn’t looking at the sunrise.

He wasn’t listening to the birds.

His eyes were glued to a glowing rectangle he called the Nut Tracker 5000.

The tiny screen flashed.

AcornCoin is up 12%.

Rusty’s heart raced.

“I knew it!” he shouted. “I’m going to be the richest squirrel in the forest!”

He sprinted past oak trees bursting with fresh acorns.

He didn’t pick up a single one.

“I don’t have time,” he muttered.

“I’m building wealth.”

Nearby, an old sunflower turned her face toward the sun.

She watched him disappear.

“My,” she whispered.

“That little squirrel runs faster every year.”

A daisy giggled.

“But he looks hungrier every year too.”

Weeks passed.

Rusty bought a bigger tree.

Then a taller tree.

Then another tree with a better view of the sunset…

Though he never actually watched the sunset.

He hired rabbits to organize his nuts.

Beavers built storage rooms.

Woodpeckers installed security systems.

Owls became accountants.

Everyone was busy.

No one asked the obvious question.

“When is someone going to eat the acorns?”

Soon every squirrel wanted what Rusty had.

They stopped climbing trees.

Machines climbed for them.

They stopped gathering food.

Delivery pigeons handled that.

They stopped talking.

Instead…

They attended seminars.

“Ten Easy Steps to Becoming an Elite Forest Millionaire.”

Tickets sold out.

The speaker?

Rusty.

Standing on a polished tree stump.

Wearing a shiny necktie made from snake skin.

“Success,” Rusty declared, “isn’t about collecting acorns anymore.”

“It’s about collecting squirrels.”

The crowd erupted in applause.

The flowers remained silent.

Autumn arrived.

Leaves turned orange.

The air grew colder.

The flowers noticed something strange.

Every squirrel had storage buildings.

None of them knew where their food actually was.

The rabbits blamed the beavers.

The beavers blamed the pigeons.

The pigeons blamed the owls.

The owls blamed paperwork.

Meanwhile…

The acorns continued falling from the trees.

Untouched.

One by one.

Thousands of them.

Until they disappeared beneath the leaves.

Then came winter.

Hard.

Cold.

Merciless.

Snow covered every branch.

The forest became quiet.

Rusty opened his largest warehouse.

Empty.

He opened another.

Empty.

Another.

Empty.

He stared in disbelief.

“But…”

“I own everything.”

An old turtle slowly walked past.

“You own buildings.”

“You forgot to own breakfast.”

Days later…

The richest squirrels in the forest stood in long lines.

Waiting.

Not for money.

For food.

A family of ordinary field mice quietly shared seeds they had gathered all year.

A beaver invited hungry neighbors into his lodge.

The birds shared berries hidden beneath the snow.

No one asked for payment.

Nature had never invented invoices.

Only humans had.

Rusty wandered through the frozen woods.

His expensive necktie was gone.

His shiny shoes had frozen solid.

His stomach growled louder than his speeches ever had.

He collapsed beside a small patch of snow where only one flower remained alive.

A tiny winter crocus.

“Am I poor now?” Rusty asked.

The flower smiled.

“You were poor when you stopped noticing the trees.”

Rusty looked around.

For the first time in years…

He heard the wind.

He noticed the snow sparkling like diamonds.

He watched birds helping one another find food.

He realized no one was competing.

They were surviving.

Together.

Spring finally returned.

The snow melted.

Tiny green shoots pushed through the earth.

Rusty walked into the forest carrying…

Not a briefcase.

Not a screen.

Not a chart.

Just a small basket.

He began collecting acorns himself.

A young squirrel asked,

“Didn’t you used to own half the forest?”

Rusty smiled.

“No.”

“I only thought I did.”

The young squirrel looked confused.

“What happened?”

Rusty held up a single acorn.

“I spent years chasing numbers.”

“I forgot this.”

High above them…

The flowers swayed gently in the breeze.

The sunflower looked toward the sky.

The daisy laughed.

The rose closed her eyes.

The old moss resting on a nearby stone spoke softly.

“The strangest creature in nature…”

“…is the one who forgets what nature already gave.”

The forest became quiet again.

Not because there was nothing to say.

But because everyone…

Even the squirrels…

Was finally listening.

THE VERNON SNELL AMAZON

PUBLISHED today.

Every time we meet…

I invite you to slow down.

To step away from the noise…

if only for a few minutes.

Because stories have a way of helping us see things we’ve been looking at every day…

without ever really seeing them.

Tonight…

I’d like to tell you a story.

Not about computers.

Not about technology.

Not even about the internet.

I’d like to tell you a story…

about us.

This story is called…

Enter the Net.

Every day…

billions of avatars…

willingly enter the Net.

Not with their bodies.

With their attention.

A screen rests quietly…

in the palm of a hand.

Light enters the eyes.

The eyes speak to the brain.

The brain awakens the heart.

And before we even realize it…

the heart begins to feel.

A story.

A photograph.

A headline.

A song.

A stranger’s opinion.

A perfect vacation.

A perfect family.

A perfect body.

A perfect lie.

The avatar reacts.

The soul…

watches.

Invisible signals race through the sky.

Satellites.

Radio waves.

Light.

Pixels.

Sound.

Crossing oceans…

mountains…

countries…

arriving in less than the blink of an eye.

Nothing touches the skin.

Yet somehow…

everything touches emotion.

A single sentence…

can ruin a day.

A single photograph…

can awaken an old memory.

A single comment…

can echo inside someone’s mind for years.

That…

is the power of symbols.

The screen becomes whatever we need it to become.

A mirror…

where we search for ourselves.

A theater…

where we watch the lives of strangers.

A marketplace…

where everything seems to have a price.

A classroom…

where knowledge waits beside misinformation.

A battlefield…

where opinions become weapons.

A stage…

where millions perform…

hoping someone…

anyone…

is watching.

One moment…

the internet teaches.

The next…

it distracts.

One moment…

it connects families across continents.

The next…

it divides neighbors living on the same street.

The internet itself…

has no heartbeat.

It has no conscience.

It has no compassion.

It doesn’t love.

It doesn’t hate.

It simply carries…

whatever humanity chooses to place inside it.

The question has never been…

“What is the internet?”

The better question is…

“What is it teaching me…

to become?”

Every scroll…

is a decision.

Every click…

opens another doorway.

Every notification whispers…

“Come back.”

Every algorithm studies us…

learning our fears…

our dreams…

our habits…

our loneliness…

our curiosity…

trying to hold our attention…

just one second longer.

Sometimes…

it offers wisdom.

Sometimes…

illusion.

Sometimes…

beauty.

Sometimes…

fear.

The brain records it all.

The heart responds.

The body remains perfectly still…

while the mind travels farther than the feet ever could.

Our ancestors…

gathered around fire.

They looked into one another’s eyes.

They learned from rivers…

from forests…

from seasons…

from silence.

Today…

we gather around glowing glass.

We measure ourselves against people we’ve never met.

We compare someone else’s highlight…

to our ordinary Tuesday.

We count followers…

instead of friendships.

We chase attention…

while starving for presence.

And through all of it…

the soul waits.

Patiently.

Quietly.

Never demanding.

Never competing.

It doesn’t ask for another notification.

It doesn’t ask for another follower.

It doesn’t ask for another hour of scrolling.

The soul asks for something much older.

Presence.

Wonder.

Conversation.

A walk without headphones.

A child laughing.

A sunrise.

A grandmother’s story.

A hand to hold.

A quiet moment…

where nothing needs to be posted…

because everything is already enough.

Maybe…

the greatest freedom isn’t leaving the internet.

Maybe…

the greatest freedom…

is remembering that no network…

no satellite…

no algorithm…

no machine…

will ever be more powerful…

than the invisible connection…

between one soul…

and another.

So before you…

enter the Net…

pause…

just for a moment.

And ask yourself…

Is this feeding my attention…

or…

is it nourishing my soul?

(Long pause.)

You know…

I don’t believe technology is the enemy.

I’m speaking to you through technology right now.

Technology has allowed my stories to reach people I may never meet.

It has connected families.

Saved lives.

Taught millions.

But every tool asks something of us.

A hammer can build a home…

or break a window.

The internet is no different.

It reflects us.

If we fill it with fear…

fear grows.

If we fill it with kindness…

kindness travels farther than we ever will.

That’s why I wrote Soul Cinema.

Not to tell you to disconnect from the world…

but to reconnect with yourself.

Every story in this collection asks one simple question:

Who are we becoming… while we’re busy becoming everything else?

If today’s story stayed with you…

then let it stay there for a Every block carried its own language. Every family carried its own battles. Every corner held both hope and heartbreak.

My first classroom wasn’t inside a school.

It was inside the streets…

inside conversations…

inside businesses…

inside homes…

inside victories…

and inside failures.

My formal education ended after the eighth grade.

Everything that followed became my education.

Life became my teacher.

People became my professors.

Experience became my diploma.

Over the past three decades, I’ve lived many different lives.

I’ve built businesses from the ground up.

I’ve owned and operated restaurants.

I created and operated a successful party venue in Bergen County, New Jersey, where I watched families celebrate weddings, birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet Sixteens, and some of the happiest moments of their lives.

I helped found and renovate a boutique hotel in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, transforming an empty vision into a place where people from around the world could create memories together.

I’ve led teams…

managed businesses…

solved problems…

built relationships…

started over more than once…

and learned that success is never permanent…

but neither is failure.

Beyond business, I’ve spent years with a camera in my hand and a notebook in my pocket.

Photographing.

Writing.

Listening.

Observing.

Trying to understand something that has followed me my entire life.

Why do people become who they become?

Why does one child lose hope while another finds purpose?

Why do neighborhoods change?

Why do families survive unimaginable pain?

Why are some memories remembered…

while others disappear forever?

Those questions became more valuable to me than any title I could ever earn.

Eventually, I realized something.

History is not only written by presidents…

or celebrities…

or people whose names appear in textbooks.

History lives inside ordinary people.

Inside mothers who sacrificed everything.

Inside fathers who tried their best.

Inside children searching for direction.

Inside neighborhoods that no longer exist the way they once did.

Inside photographs tucked away inside forgotten boxes.

Inside voices that disappear when no one takes the time to listen.

That’s why I created Poetic Cinema Studio.

Not to build a brand.

Not to become famous.

Not to convince anyone that my life was extraordinary.

I created it because I believe every life holds a piece of history.

And history deserves witnesses.

Poetic Cinema Studio is my promise that these stories will not disappear.

Here you’ll find memoirs…

photography…

books…

films…

conversations…

history…

philosophy…

and reflections born from real experience.

Some stories will make you smile.

Some may break your heart.

Some may challenge what you believe.

Some may remind you of your own life.

But every one of them is told with the same purpose.

To preserve what time tries to erase.

Everything you see here comes from lived experience.

Not perfection.

Experience.

I’ve known success.

I’ve known failure.

I’ve known fear.

I’ve known hope.

I’ve watched businesses grow.

I’ve watched dreams collapse.

I’ve buried chapters of my life that I thought would define me forever…

only to discover that every ending was preparing me to tell these stories.

Today…

I no longer measure wealth by money alone.

I measure it by memories preserved.

By photographs that still speak decades later.

By stories that help one person feel less alone.

By history that refuses to be forgotten.

If one story helps you understand another human being…

If one photograph reminds you of someone you’ve loved…

If one conversation changes the way you see your own life…

Then Poetic Cinema Studio has already fulfilled its purpose.

I’m not here because I have all the answers.

I’m here because I’ve spent a lifetime learning the value of better questions.

So I invite you…

Walk slowly.

Listen carefully.

Question honestly.

Remember deeply.

Because every photograph has a heartbeat.

Every neighborhood has a memory.

Every family carries an untold history.

And every human being leaves behind a story.

Thank you for beginning this journey with me.

Welcome…

to Poetic Cinema Studio.

Where stories become memory…

and memory becomes history.

Psychological Warfare: Testimony from Washington Heights

testimony. I witnessed the street economy, later owned and operated a successful party venue, watched communities evolve, and saw generations change before my eyes. They are part of my personal archive—a record of a neighborhood that shaped me, challenged me, and ultimately became part of my healing.

Photograph 1: Riverside Drive, Washington Heights

This photograph was taken on Riverside Drive, only a few blocks from where I grew up.

What fascinated me most was how much Washington Heights had changed. During the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, these streets were full of people, noise, struggle, and constant movement. Today, much of that energy has disappeared. Many buildings have been renovated, property values have risen, and the neighborhood feels quieter than the one I remember.

I also admired the American flag flying above the skyline. From this angle, it appears to sit on top of one of the old red-brick buildings, but it actually flies above NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital several blocks away.

The photograph captures something I love about Washington Heights: trees growing alongside historic brick buildings, nature blending with architecture, and layers of history standing together in one frame.

Photograph 2: Returning to the Rooftops

After suffering a mental breakdown following my mother’s passing, I found myself returning to the rooftops of Washington Heights.

As a child, these rooftops were our sanctuary.

This is where my friends and I escaped. We talked, laughed, dreamed, watched pigeons, and imagined futures we couldn’t yet see.

Many of those friends are no longer here. Some were lost to drugs. Others to violence.

Standing there again in 2024, I wasn’t simply looking at a sunset. I was looking back at an entire lifetime.

The roof reminded me of who I was before survival became my everyday existence.

Photograph 3: My Friend

This photograph is of a friend I’ve known for many years.

He’s wearing a Chicago Bulls shirt with an American flag.

Life hasn’t been easy for him. The War on Drugs era left scars that never completely healed, and he struggles with mental health. Yet beneath everything, he remains one of the kindest people I’ve known.

He always lights up when he sees me.

He proudly shows me pictures of his daughter and tells stories about the life he remembers before everything changed.

I spent many afternoons sitting with him on Riverside Drive.

Looking back, I realize something important:

Sometimes two broken people help each other heal.

We weren’t fixing each other’s lives.

We were simply sharing stories, memories, and time.

That was enough.

Photograph 4: Riverside Architecture

This historic apartment building near 160th Street immediately caught my attention.

The craftsmanship is extraordinary.

The stonework, decorative moldings, and architectural details remind me that these buildings were constructed with incredible care over a century ago.

Standing in front of it, I couldn’t help but imagine the workers who built it, the generations who have lived inside it, and everything these walls have silently witnessed.

Nearby is the historic Morris–Jumel Mansion, one of the oldest surviving houses in Manhattan and a place closely connected to George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

History surrounds these streets.

Photograph 5: Looking Toward the Sky

This photograph is a reflection of me during one of the darkest periods of my life.

I was standing alone, wearing sunglasses and my favorite hat.

What amazes me today is that it’s now July 9, 2026, and I’m still wearing that same hat.

Some objects quietly become witnesses to our lives.

At that moment, I was struggling with grief, financial loss, broken relationships, addiction, and the uncertainty of what came next.

As I stood there, memories from the 1980s and 1990s flooded back.

I wasn’t just remembering a neighborhood.

I was remembering the boy who somehow survived it.

Photograph 6: The Emergency Call Box

Before cell phones existed, these emergency call boxes stood throughout New York City.

If someone had been shot, there was a fire, or an emergency happened, you could use one to contact the police or fire department.

I remember pressing these buttons as a child during some of the worst moments our neighborhood experienced.

To see one still standing today—covered in graffiti but still present—felt like discovering a forgotten piece of history.

Whether it still works or not almost doesn’t matter.

It reminds me of a time when every emergency felt immediate, personal, and close to home.

Why These Photographs Matter

These photographs are more than pictures.

They are evidence.

They document Washington Heights during my own journey of recovery.

At the time, I was struggling with addiction, psychosis, grief, and rebuilding my life after losing so much.

Every photograph became part of my healing.

Many people know Washington Heights because of its role during the War on Drugs. The streets around West 160th Street became symbols of one of New York City’s most difficult periods.

These photographs don’t glorify that history.

They preserve it.

Because if we don’t document what happened, someone else will tell the story for us.

Thank you for taking this walk with me.

These photographs are free because history should be shared.

If these images help you understand Washington Heights—or understand another human being a little better—then they have already served their purpose.

Explore the complete Poetic Cinema Studio archive: https://go.poeticcinemastudio.com
<div worlds.

We are all invisible colors given names and placed inside different shapes we call people.

From the moment we are born, our brains begin adapting.

They learn.

They imitate.

They absorb.

That process is called education.

But what is education?

Is it simply learning?

Or is it learning what someone else believes we should become?

Our brains guide our emotions, our decisions, and the direction of our lives.

But what happens when the education we receive teaches us to harm another person’s mind instead of helping it heal?

What happens when knowledge becomes manipulation?

When success is measured by how much we can take instead of how much we can give?

A wounded brain can wound another brain.

A frightened mind can spread fear.

One person’s choices can create another person’s anger, anxiety, addiction, violence, or despair.

Sometimes the greatest injury is invisible.

The soul watches all of this unfold.

It watches the body respond to symbols, sounds, words, money, titles, materials, and status.

None of these things possess meaning on their own.

The human brain gives them value.

A symbol is only a symbol until we believe in it.

Money is only paper until we agree it has power.

Even the names we give ourselves are symbols carried by memory.

We have all been trained.

By families.

By neighborhoods.

By schools.

By governments.

By cultures.

By fear.

By hope.

But after all that training, one question remains.

Do we truly love the person we have become?

Or have we simply become the person we were taught to be?

Perhaps the greatest education is not learning how to follow.

Perhaps it is learning how to see clearly.

To question what we have inherited.

To choose compassion over domination.

To remember that every human being carries a mind, a heart, and a life as real as our own.

When power loses compassion, education becomes instruction without wisdom.

And when wisdom disappears, humanity begins to forget itself.

Maybe that is the contradiction we keep living.

The words in our books often speak of love, mercy, justice, and peace.

Yet too often, our actions tell a different story.

Perhaps the education we need most is not how to rule over one another—

but how to understand one another.

The Broken Mirror

How can someone tell another human being what to do with their together, something profound happens. Feeling is no longer just emotion—it becomes memory, instinct, imagination, love, grief, fear, hope, and sacrifice moving through the same body at the same time.

That is why they call certain feelings deep.

Deep is what happens when the heart reaches both sides of the mind.

Those feelings can create masterpieces.

Or they can create monsters.

Enough pressure can turn someone into a hero.

Enough pressure can turn someone into a villain.

The difference is often invisible.

Yet people tell us to control it.

“Go take a walk.”

“Go breathe.”

“Go smoke a cigarette.”

“Go have a drink.”

As if memory disappears because someone suggested a distraction.

But memory does not disappear.

Memory remembers every sacrifice.

Every year.

Every betrayal.

Every sleepless night.

Every fear.

Every uncertain step taken simply to survive.

Those memories continue sending signals through the body long after the moment has passed.

Fear exists because something matters.

Grief exists because someone mattered.

Love hurts because love was real.

The people who came before us left pieces of themselves inside us.

In many ways, we carry their unfinished emotions.

Yet there are those who reduce us to numbers.

Numbers have no heartbeat.

Numbers don’t cry.

Numbers don’t remember.

I am not a number.

I have created more numbers than I could ever count.

Businesses.

Addresses.

Receipts.

Accounts.

Documents.

Dates.

Years.

But none of those numbers ever explained who I am.

Emotion did.

I’ve been navigating this journey since 1971.

Not through mathematics alone.

Through blood.

Through memory.

Through heartbreak.

Through survival.

I have been torn down.

Put back together.

Betrayed.

Broken.

Rebuilt.

Again.

And again.

Then one day, you lose your only cheerleader.

Your mother.

After that…

Everything changes.

The world becomes quieter.

You continue walking, hoping that somewhere beyond this life she is still cheering for you.

Still believing.

Still smiling.

Maybe that is all any son truly wants.

To know his mother still believes.

Life is not about becoming a perfect number.

It is about becoming a beautiful human being.

The pressures placed upon our minds helped shape who we became.

Broken.

Repaired.

But never returned to who we once were.

Every crack remains part of the design.

Memory is like a mirror.

We do not look into a mirror simply to see who we are.

We look into a mirror to remember who we have been.

I will always remember the broken mirror.

Its shattered pieces remind me that life slips through our hands the way sand slips between our fingers.

Yet every piece still reflects something true.

So today I honor those who lived before they had the language to explain what they were feeling.

Those who carried pain silently.

Those who survived without applause.

Those whose hearts kept beating anyway.

God bless you.

And God bless my mother.

Left Blood. Those forces are not confined to one nation, one race, or one culture. They are recurring choices within humanity itself.

My hope has always been to strengthen the side that remembers compassion.

The side that protects without becoming cruel.

The side that creates without needing to conquer.

The side that leaves the world more beautiful than it found it.

That is what Left Blood. Right Brain. has always meant to me.

It is not a division between people.

It is a call to remember our roots while using our minds to grow beyond our wounds.

Because when memory and imagination finally walk together…

history no longer becomes a prison.

It becomes a seed.

And from that seed…

a new garden can grow.
<div already become part of this journey simply by giving me your time.

If my stories have helped you think differently…

If they’ve reminded you of your own humanity…

If they’ve encouraged you to slow down and look at the world with more compassion…

Then I ask, with humility, for your help.

Not because I’m asking you to rescue me.

Because I’m asking you to help me continue.

You’re not supporting a company.

You’re helping a human being continue creating the work that became Poetic Cinema Studio.

Without the artist, there is no archive.

Without the storyteller, there are no stories left to tell.

Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps me remain focused on creating books, documenting history, preserving testimony, and building something that I hope will outlive me.

But support doesn’t only come through donations.

Collaboration is just as valuable.

If you’re an educator, historian, writer, filmmaker, photographer, artist, publisher, musician, designer, librarian, archivist, translator, researcher, podcaster, entrepreneur, philanthropist, or simply someone who believes this work deserves to reach more people, I would genuinely love to hear from you.

None of us carries every answer.

What you know and what I know may become something neither of us could have created alone.

The greatest things in history have often been built through people who chose to believe in one another.

Poetic Cinema has never been about one neighborhood, one country, one language, one religion, or one culture.

It is about the human experience.

It belongs to anyone willing to explore life with honesty, imagination, compassion, and curiosity.

No matter where you were born…

No matter what language you speak…

No matter what faith you follow—or whether you follow none at all…

We all arrive on this Earth carrying questions.

My work is simply my way of exploring them.

If you would like to walk beside me on this journey—whether through encouragement, collaboration, sharing my work, introducing me to others, investing in the vision, or making a financial contribution—I welcome you with gratitude.

Everything I’ve created is an invitation.

Not to agree with me.

But to think.

To imagine.

To remember.

To feel.

And perhaps, together, to leave the world a little more compassionate than we found it.

Thank you for seeing me.

Thank you for listening.

Thank you for believing that one ordinary human being can leave behind an extraordinary testimony.

May God bless you, your family, and your own journey.

With gratitude,

Vernon Snell
Founder & Creator, Poetic Cinema Studio

Explore the woman...

A father teaching his son to ride a bicycle...

A robin gathering tiny sticks for her nest...

Everything seemed connected.

Everything seemed to matter.

She hurried back to Luna’s house.

“Luna!”

The storyteller opened the door before Lily even knocked.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

“You knew I was coming?”

Luna laughed.

“The curious always return.”

Lily stepped inside.

“I’ve been thinking.”

“That’s usually how adventures begin.”

“I want to know something.”

“What is it?”

“How do people become heroes?”

Luna became very quiet.

Instead of answering...

She walked toward one of the oldest books in the library.

Unlike the others...

This one had no title.

Its cover was smooth blue leather.

Its pages shimmered softly.

Luna placed it gently on the table.

“This book has only one story.”

Lily opened it.

Every page was blank.

She frowned.

“There’s nothing here.”

Luna smiled.

“Turn the page.”

Lily did.

Still blank.

Another page.

Blank.

Another.

Nothing.

“I don’t understand.”

Luna whispered,

“Place your hand on the paper.”

Lily did.

Suddenly...

The room disappeared.

She found herself standing in a beautiful forest.

The trees stretched so high they touched the clouds.

Butterflies floated like tiny pieces of sunlight.

The air smelled of pine, rain, and wildflowers.

Far ahead stood enormous golden gates.

Above them were carved four words.

THE LAND OF WISHES

As Lily stepped closer, the gates slowly opened.

Inside...

Everything sparkled.

Rivers reflected stars.

Flowers sang softly.

Animals greeted one another with smiles.

Children laughed without fear.

It felt like the happiest place that had ever existed.

Until...

A strange silence fell.

The colors slowly began fading.

Flowers closed.

The rivers stopped shining.

The birds disappeared.

One by one...

The stars above began going dark.

A tiny fox approached Lily.

“You came.”

“I did?”

“We’ve been waiting.”

“For me?”

The fox nodded.

“Our wishes are disappearing.”

“Who is taking them?”

The fox looked toward the distant mountains.

“The Shadow Collector.”

Lily felt afraid.

“I don’t think I’m supposed to fight monsters.”

The fox smiled kindly.

“Neither did the last hero.”

Before Lily could ask another question...

A great owl landed beside them.

Its feathers shimmered silver.

Its eyes looked older than time itself.

“You seek a hero.”

“I think so.”

The owl gently shook its head.

“Everyone who comes here asks the wrong question.”

“What should I ask?”

Instead of answering...

The owl spread one enormous wing.

A mirror appeared.

Lily looked inside.

She expected to see herself.

Instead...

She saw moments from her own life.

Helping someone pick up spilled books.

Sharing lunch with a classmate.

Saying sorry after making a mistake.

Comforting someone who felt lonely.

She blinked.

“Those aren’t heroic.”

The owl smiled.

“They are exactly how heroes begin.”

Lily stared.

“I thought heroes defeated dragons.”

“Sometimes.”

“I thought heroes carried swords.”

“Occasionally.”

“I thought heroes were fearless.”

The owl laughed.

“No.”

“Heroes feel fear.”

“They simply refuse to let fear make their decisions.”

Suddenly...

The ground shook.

Dark clouds rolled across the sky.

The Shadow Collector had arrived.

It wasn’t a monster.

It wasn’t a giant.

It wasn’t terrifying at all.

It was made entirely of whispers.

“I can’t...”

“You’ll fail...”

“No one believes you...”

“You’re too small...”

“You’ll never be enough...”

The whispers floated around everyone.

Flowers lowered their heads.

Birds stopped singing.

Even the fox became frightened.

Lily’s knees trembled.

“I don’t know what to do.”

The owl quietly said,

“Listen carefully.”

“To what?”

“Not the whispers.”

“Your own heart.”

Lily closed her eyes.

Everything became silent.

Deep inside...

She heard another voice.

Gentle.

Steady.

Honest.

“Take one step.”

She did.

The whispers became quieter.

“Take another.”

She did.

Flowers slowly began opening again.

“Keep walking.”

The Shadow Collector grew smaller.

Lily realized something remarkable.

Every brave choice she made...

Shrank the darkness.

Not because she defeated it.

Because she refused to feed it.

Finally...

She stood directly before the Shadow Collector.

It looked no larger than a frightened child.

“Why do you steal wishes?”

The shadow answered quietly.

“Because everyone believes me.”

Lily smiled gently.

“I don’t.”

The shadow dissolved like morning fog beneath the rising sun.

Light returned.

The rivers sparkled.

Birds sang.

The flowers danced once more.

The fox laughed.

“You did it!”

Lily looked around.

“But...I didn’t fight.”

The owl landed beside her.

“No.”

“You believed.”

“And sometimes...”

“...that is the greatest courage of all.”

The forest slowly faded.

The Story House returned.

Luna closed the blue book.

Lily sat silently.

Finally she asked,

“So...”

“Am I a hero?”

Luna smiled the way only old storytellers can.

“You became one the moment you stopped asking whether you were.”

She handed Lily a tiny silver feather.

“What is this?”

“A reminder.”

“Of what?”

“That courage isn’t something you find.”

“It is something you practice.”

Lily slipped the feather safely into her pocket.

Outside, children were laughing beneath the old oak once again.

They looked exactly as they had yesterday.

But Lily noticed something she had never seen before.

Every single child...

Was carrying an invisible light.

Some lights were bright.

Some were only beginning to glow.

Yet every one of them...

Had the power to become a hero.

And somewhere inside the Story House, another blank book quietly opened, waiting for the next child brave enough to discover the hero already living inside them.

Continue the journey at Go.PoeticCinemaStudio.com, where Poetic Cinema Studio preserves stories, philosophy, imagination, and human reflection through books,
