Only one of those is real thinking. The other is an opinion, wearing thinking’s coat.

I think about that fifteen-second clip often now, mostly because of how easily I fell for my own certainty, and how normal that felt in the moment.

“I don’t know yet” used to feel like a weak thing to say out loud. Now I think it might be one of the most honest sentences available to us.

That raised two questions for me. Is that actually true? And if it is, why would anyone bother doing the harder work of stepping out of that role?

Then there’s a second pattern, the habit of casting ourselves as wronged even when the situation is far more complicated than that. Nearly everyone slips into this at some point.

“I didn’t get the promotion because my manager doesn’t know what talent looks like.” or “The relationship ended because my ex never learned to communicate.”

That second pattern, the one the therapist was describing, really is seductive. It’s easier, and it does feel satisfying in the moment, because it lets us off the hook entirely.

“Someone else caused this!”

Of course that feels better than the alternative.

But the puzzle remains, if casting blame outward is so effortless and so gratifying, what would push someone to give it up? Why choose guilt, self-scrutiny, and the uncomfortable realization that we’re not quite as capable or blameless as we’d like to believe?

To test this, I looked at the opposite extreme too, people who absorb all the blame, who assume every bad outcome is entirely their doing. “I mess up everything I touch,” they’ll say. Anyone who’s sat with a friend spiraling like this knows instantly it isn’t accurate.

Even if they contributed to what went wrong, other people and circumstances were almost always involved too. And once we recognize that no one carries 100% of the fault, the reverse has to be true as well, no one else carries 100% of it either. We can’t have it both ways. Naturally, we all play some part in the messes we end up in.

So the tidy, all-or-nothing story doesn’t hold up.

Reality lives in the gray area.

But that still leaves the original question unanswered, why bother owning our part if we don’t have to?

Two solid reasons come to mind.

The first is mental quiet. Blaming outward keeps the mind loud. The internal replay doesn’t shut off. It steals sleep. It becomes the only thing you talk about with the people around you, sometimes until they start pulling away.

Once I got serious about being honestly self-aware (which isn’t the same as being harsh with myself), once I started owning my part in what happens in my life, something shifted, my anxiety actually dropped. Sounds backwards, but it’s true. It’s a bit like the racing thoughts that keep you up at night until you finally get them down on paper, the second you externalize them, the noise stops.

Owning your part functions the same way.

The moment I accepted that the real story lives somewhere in the middle, and that I have a hand in the outcomes I get the fights, the setbacks, my brain went quiet. The looping stopped. I slept better. Blaming others felt good briefly, but it kept me stuck looking backward instead of moving ahead.

A few years ago, I went to Goa, properly fried from work, the kind of tired where you’re running on fumes, just telling myself, get to the break, you’ll feel better there.

Restless, couldn’t sit still, this low-grade anxiety humming under everything, in the exact place I’d been fantasising about for months.

Headache on day one. Couldn’t switch off. Kept reaching for my phone to check something, anything at all.

I genuinely thought something was wrong with me.

Nothing was wrong with me, it was just biology doing exactly what biology does.

When you’ve been in high-stress mode for months, your nervous system runs hot, cortisol and adrenaline keeping you sharp and moving, and none of it comes with an off switch.

It comes with a deceleration curve instead, so when you slam the brakes on day one, your body doesn’t go “ah, finally, rest.” It panics!!!!

Here’s the small neuroscience piece behind that panic. Chronic stress keeps a system called the HPA axis, the loop between your brain and your adrenal glands, running in overdrive for so long that it forgets how to power down quickly, so the drop in stress hormones happens too fast for your body to keep up with.

Tension, fatigue, that infamous vacation headache, all of it is just your body catching up to a decrease it wasn’t braced for.

The outside noise goes quiet, and suddenly everything you were outrunning catches up all at once.

So I did what any reasonably self-aware, slightly obsessive person does, I started spying on myself. All of it, really, comes down to the same fifteen minutes, borrowed back from the noise, spent simply noticing whatever thoughts happen to show up.

And this is the part I didn’t expect. My resilience, the kind that actually holds up under pressure, didn’t come from productivity hacks or motivational reels. It came from silence, specifically, from sitting there, facing my own thoughts without flinching or reaching for a distraction, and slowly realizing I already had the ability to find my own way through them.

That discovery, quiet as it was, changed something in me.
