You may have seen this little face in my notes…and now it’s time to let you know that the zine is completed and adoptable!

I really love zines as a medium right now. Something about their easygoing nature…I can draw them without much pressure, following my whimsy. I can print them, and spend time folding and cutting them - a process I found to be very meditative!
And I like that my art can land in new hands and give someone a smile…at little cost!
As a lover of art, I appreciate when an artist has low tier options too, because money tends to be tight despite the fact that I would really like to purchase all the beauty!

The new zine is called “Chasing Stars” and it features our little buddy cat hunting stars around and collecting them. A magical play that will end with what cats do best…a well deserved nap!

In the envelope you will always find a hand drawn letter and some mini prints of my works. Since my snail mail club is so tiny, I am still able to send little original sketches with it. It fills me of joy, and it’s my hope that it gives the receiver a good feeling in the heart.

My name is Alice and I am addicted to sketchbooks.

I draw way more in a sketchbook than I do on other surfaces. The sketchbook is my safe place, my refuge, my little sacred friend that holds all the little pieces of my soul that I pour in it. It’s a journal, a memory drawer, a place to experiment, something to find calm in when the soul is troubled.

I also happen to really, really love my IPad and Procreate.

What I missed in Procreate was that feeling of contained space that a sketchbook gives me. To have a lot of pages to scroll through, draw on, go back to.
So I googled. Someone else must be like me, right?
I could only find two products that could have been ok for my needs.
One is a sketchbook pack that also comes with sketching brushes, it’s called The Sketchbook Experience by Manero Brushes on Gumroad. They offer a mini set for free and I tried it. It’s nicely done and the full version offers many different sketchbook covers, papers and such, but it’s a one page thing. Am I making sense here? I like to have the two pages spread side by side. I have my quirks.
The other is Sketchbook For Procreate by Wooly Pronto, it seems super well done but also more suited for people who like to journal, add ephemeras, stickers, all of that. It even has washi tapes! I find it super cool. But not what I was after.

What I wanted was the easy, basic, satisfying experience of my trusted Moleskine. Just that.

So I made my own.

Each page looks just like a sketchbook spread, with a paper texture and a slight shadow in the center fold.

I made the cover pages from pictures of my own sketchbooks, and made them so that you can customise their look with drawings, text, stickers or ephemeras.

The whole thing is quite DIY, I am not a pro designer, I simply created something that I needed, and then thought that maybe someone else may need it too.

So I made it available for you all, digital sketchers, my tribe! It’s on Ko-Fi because it allows me to collect tips, and make it a “pay what you can” system.

There are two options:

SketchAway Mini is the sample version, given for free to the community, and it includes two little sketchbooks, one A6 and one square. You can try it, see if you like it, and even stick with only this one and be happy and satisfied about it.

This is the big version, where you get the whole 11 sketchbooks in different sizes, shapes and papers. I set an affordable price because I want everyone to be able to enjoy it, while giving me a little money back. Sai, disegno praticamente da quando ero una bimba. Ricordo ancora il giorno in cui mia mamma mi portò in cartoleria e mi comprò un blocchetto di carta bianca e una biro multicolore: sul blocchetto c’era una geisha. Ricordo che ero piccolissima e guardavo dal basso il proprietario del negozio mentre allungava la mano per prenderli e me li porgeva. Avrò avuto circa 3 anni, forse?

E poi, considerando quanto ancora oggi io ami disegnare con le biro, direi che mia mamma aveva visto giusto.

Come molti di noi, crescendo ho cercato di “diventare qualcuno” nel mondo dell’arte. Per me significava mostrare i miei lavori online e desiderare tantissimo di riuscire a esporre nelle gallerie all’estero. Sono riuscita a ottenere qualche opportunità. Spedire i miei lavori fin laggiù mi è costato un occhio della testa, senza nemmeno considerare le cornici. E non ho venduto nulla.

Mi sentivo esausta, depressa, non abbastanza brava e semplicemente non ne potevo più. Per circa 10 anni ho lasciato perdere. Ho smesso di disegnare. Facevo comunque cose artistiche, come lavorare l’argento, ma disegnare semplicemente per il piacere di disegnare? No. Assolutamente no. Faceva troppo male.

Due anni fa mi sono svegliata sentendomi particolarmente ispirata e ho allungato la mano verso i miei materiali artistici. E, se mi chiedeste perché proprio allora, posso dire con tutta sincerità che non ne ho idea.
Quello che so è che la vita mi ha messa alla prova e mi ha plasmata parecchio (depressione, attacchi di panico, 8 anni di terapia, il dover affrontare un sacco di mostri) e che la persona che quel giorno si è seduta con un quaderno da disegno davanti a sé era molto diversa da quella che aveva disegnato 10 anni prima.

Oggi l’arte è cura di me. L’arte è espressione. L’arte è esplorazione di me stessa. L’arte è, prima di tutto, un percorso di consapevolezza, durante il quale mi capita di creare cose che mi fa piacere guardare. Mi dà gioia.

E ho trovato il coraggio di condividere di nuovo i miei lavori online.
Instagram? Mah. Sappiamo tutti come funziona la visibilità lì, e io sono davvero pessima nel mettermi in mostra per ottenere visualizzazioni.
Poi però ho scoperto Substack… e da lì è iniziato tutto, crescendo a valanga.
Ho trovato una comunità! Ho trovato persone sulla mia stessa lunghezza d’onda, che semplicemente amano cimentarsi con la propria arte, con le mani sporche e un atteggiamento curioso. Ho trovato un luogo in cui mi sono sentita libera di essere me stessa. E di dire, timidamente… ehm… ciao… queste sono le cose che mi piace creare.

Quello che è successo è che questo terreno fertile mi ha dato forza.
Quella parte di me che ama semplicemente dare, condividere, è sbocciata in questo ambiente meraviglioso. Una parte di me che non ha a che fare con il “diventare famosa”, ma con il pensiero: “forse vedere questa cosa oggi renderà felice qualcuno”.

Mi sento forte, capace, libera di scegliere. Sento di POTER provare quella cosa che mi incuriosisce. Sento che il mondo (dell’arte) è tutto nelle mie mani.
Riuscirò mai a esporre i miei lavori in grandi gallerie? Ne dubito.
Ma continuerò a fare arte e a sentirmi bene nel farlo? SÌ!

Nelle ultime due settimane ho dato vita a un nuovo contenitore per la mia arte, Volpeluna, perché i miei social sono pieni di quello che faccio per lavoro e sentivo il bisogno di dare alla mia arte uno spazio in cui respirare davvero - come una stanza nuova, tutta per lei. Un luogo in cui, metaforicamente, poter disporre tutti i miei materiali artistici e sentire quella sensazione di libertà nel petto.
Una sorta di nuova identità. Aveva senso essere una nuova me.
E ho creato dei profili social per questo progetto, ho realizzato un sito web dedicato e qui ho cambiato il mio nome. E, cosa più importante, questa decisione di dare forza a me stessa, di concedermi più spazio, più presenza, mi ha resa molto più creativa.
Molto. Più. Creativa.
Guardo un’opera o una tecnica di qualcun altro e penso… “Oh. Mi piacerebbe provare a farlo a modo mio”.
L’accento è su a modo mio - e per me questo è importante. Mi sembra finalmente di essere entrata in una zona libera dal confronto.
Vedo quello che fai, ne apprezzo alcuni aspetti, ci gioco un po’ anch’io, ma non punto a diventare te solo perché penso che tu sia migliore di me.
Però ispirami quanto vuoi, eh. Adoro essere ispirata.

Ho realizzato il mio primo libro d’artista, partendo da una delle mie Paper Prayers.
Le Paper Prayers sono dipinti astratti che creo con un approccio consapevole. Per prima cosa, lascio scorrere liberamente delle pennellate di colore sulla carta, seguendo la mia intuizione e permettendo all’acqua di fare la sua magia. Poi lavoro su questo sfondo, utilizzando tecniche tradizionali oppure digitali.
Scrivo una preghiera sulla superficie e poi la copro con i successivi strati di pittura e disegno.
Mi piace pensare che la preghiera rimanga custodita tra gli strati di colori e segni, continuando ad agire sullo sfondo.
L’opera viene stampata professionalmente, poi io la piego, la taglio, la incollo e mi occupo di tutte quelle cose pratiche che servono per realizzare un libro. Il risultato finale è un’opera d’arte che, per caso, ha scelto di assumere la forma di un libro.
Ora ditemi: quanto è bello tutto questo? E perché non ho scoperto i libri d’artista fino alla veneranda età di 43 anni???

Ed è qui che vi dico che i materiali artistici non sono economici - lo sapevate già, vero? - e che, per fortuna, ho opere per tutte le tasche nel mio STORE, e sarei davvero, davvero grata e felicissima se decideste di farci un salto.

Sai cos’altro ho fatto? Le zine.
Un’altra cosa che tenevo d’occhio da un po’ di tempo. Ma non sono abbastanza brava. Non sono brava a illustrare, a raccontare storie attraverso le immagini. E a nessuno importerà niente delle mie zine e io finirò per deprimermi.
Sapete una cosa?
Tenere tra le mani quel piccolo libretto fai-da-te, per il quale ho realizzato i disegni e al quale ho dedicato del tempo? Questa è la ricompensa. Sul serio.
Il giorno in cui ho stampato la prima copia in assoluto, ci ho dormito con la zine sotto il cuscino.
È… reale. La puoi toccare. È interattiva. Può viaggiare. Può essere guardata. Può incontrare delle persone.
Il che mi fa pensare che le mie piccole zine abbiano una vita sociale più attiva della mia, ma questa è una storia per un altro giorno.

Ma l’effetto a catena è già iniziato.
Sapete, per un bel po’ me ne sono stata nascosta in casa, senza interagire con la gente del posto, completamente in modalità stealth, stile ninja.
Adesso trascino fuori di casa il mio sedere - ancora piuttosto - agorafobico e vado a lasciare le mie zine in giro per il paese.
E me la cavo abbastanza bene con l’idea che la gente del posto le veda.
E, cosa ancora più importante, con l’idea che la gente del posto veda me, perché cosa c’è di più me della mia arte?
Qui facciamo cose radicali, baby.

In conclusione… quello che mi sento di dirvi è: fatelo e basta.
Lo so che la vostra mente vi sta elencando un sacco di ottime ragioni per cui non dovreste farlo, insieme a tutti i peggiori scenari possibili e a tutti gli errori che potreste commettere.
Fatelo e basta. Nei limiti del ragionevole, ovviamente - non fatevi del male. Ma fatelo.
Volete disegnare qualcosa che pensate sia difficile? È solo un pezzo di carta, ve lo prometto: il mondo non finirà perché avete fatto un brutto disegno.
Siete curiosi di provare una tecnica o un materiale? Provatelo. In questo momento sono molto curiosa di provare la linoleografia e, come al solito, ho un budget piuttosto ristretto, quindi sto aspettando che mi arrivino delle gomme e un set per linoleografia con un coltellino base e vari strumenti, così potrò divertirmi a sperimentare.
Non vi serve la carta migliore, non vi servono gli strumenti migliori (lo sto dicendo soprattutto a me stessa: voglio tantissimo una penna Fude, davvero, la voglio tantissimo), non vi servono il pennello o il gadget più costoso per cominciare.
Fatelo e basta!

You know, I have been busy drawing since I was a baby. I still remember the day when my mum took me to the stationery shop and bought me a white paper notepad and a multicolor ballpoint pen - the notepad had a geisha on it. I remember being small and looking up at the shop owner reaching for them and handing them to me. I was around 3 years old maybe?
Also, considering how I love to draw with ballpoint pens to this day, my mum was onto something.

As many of us did, growing up I tried to “become someone” in the art world. For me it was about showing my work online and wanting so bad to be in the overseas galleries shows. I managed to land a few. It costed me an arm and a leg to send my work all the way there, not considering the frames. I also sold nothing. I felt burned out, depressed, not good enough, and done with it. For around 10 years, I gave up. I quit drawing. I did artistic things like silversmithing, but drawing for the sake of drawing? Nope. No way. That hurt so much.

Two years ago I woke up feeling fancy and reached for art supplies, and if you ask me why now, I can say with all honesty that I have no idea. What I know is that life has battered and shaped me quite a lot since then (depression, panic attacks, 8 years of therapy, facing a lot of monsters) and that the person who sat with the sketchbook that day was very different from the one that did it 10 years ago.
Nowadays, art is self care. Art is expression. Art is exploration of myself. Art is first and foremost a mindfulness journey in which I happen to make things I am pleased to look at. It gives me joy.
And I found the courage to share my work online again. Instagram? Meh. We all know how visibility works there and I am really bad at performing for views.
But then I found Substack…and it snowballed from there.

I found a community! I found like minded people who just love to dabble in their art, messy hands and curious attitude. I found a place where it felt safe to be me. And to tentatively say…ehm…hello…this is what I like to make.
What happened is that this fertile ground gave me strenght.
That some part of me who just likes to give, to share, bloomed in this beautiful environment. A part of me who is not about “being famous”, but about… “maybe seeing this will make someone happy today”.

I feel empowered. I feel like I CAN try that thing I am curious about. I feel like the (art) world is my oyster. Will I ever have shows of my work at big galleries? I doubt so.
But will I keep making art and feeling good about it? YES!

In the past 2 weeks I gave birth to a new container for my art, Volpeluna, because my socials are full of what I do for a living and I wanted to give my art a proper breathing space - like a new room just for it. To metaphorically lay all my art supplies out and feel that sense of freedom in your chest.
A new identity sort of. It made sense to be a new me.
And I made socials for it, and I designed a website dedicated to it. And I renamed myself here. And most important, this decision to empower myself, to give myself more space, more presence, made me so much more creative.
So. Much. More.
I will look at some art or technique from someone else and go… “oh. I’d like to try that my way”. Emphasis on - my way - and this is important for me. It seems like I am in a compare-free area finally. I see what you are doing, I appreciate some aspects of it, I will play around with them, but I don’t aim to become you just because I feel you are better than I am. Inspire me all the way though, I adore that.

I made my first artist book, made from one of my Paper Prayers.
The Paper Prayers are abstract paintings that I create with a mindful attitude. First, free washes of colour are moved on the paper, playing with my intuition and allowing the water to create its magic. Then, I work on this background, either in traditional media or in digital.
I write a prayer on the surface, and then cover it with the successive layers of paint and drawing.
I like to think that the prayer is nestled in the layers of colours and marks, working in the background.
The artwork is printed professionally, then I fold, cut, glue, make all the practical bookmaking things happen. The end result is art that happened to like to be in a book shape. Now tell me, how cool is that? And why I didn’t know about artist books until the ripe age of 43???

This is where I tell you that art supplies aren’t cheap - bet you knew already eh? - and that I happen to have art for all pockets in my STORE and that I would be forever grateful and excited if you decided to pay it a visit. Really ♥

You know what else I did? Zines.
Another thing I have been eyeing for some time. But I am not good enough. I am not good at illustrating, at telling stories through images. And nobody will care about them and I will be depressed.
You know what?
To hold that DIY booklet in my hands, that I made the drawings for, that I spent time on? That is the reward. Seriously. The day I printed the first copy ever, I slept with it under my pillow.
It’s…real. Touchable. Interactive. It can travel. It can be looked at. It can meet people.
Which makes me think my little zines have more of a social life than I do, but that is a story for another day.
But the ripple effect is happening already. You know, I have been hiding in my home, not interacting with the locals, full stealth mode, ninja style. Now I drag my - still quite - agoraphobic butt out and drop my zines in town. I am ok (ish) at the idea of the locals seeing them. And most important, at the locals seeing me, because what is more me than my art? We do things radical around here, baby.

Interruption time where I tell you that my zines are only 3 euro and if you decided to buy one or two I would be so excited my inner child could pee herself. You find them HERE.

In conclusion…What I feel like saying is, just do it. I know your mind is telling you an awful lot of good reasons why you shouldn’t, and also all the worst case scenarios, and all the mistakes you can make.
Just to do it. Within reason, like, don’t harm yourself. But do it. Want to draw something that you think is difficult? It’s just a piece of paper, I promise you the world won’t end because you did a bad drawing.
Are you curious about a medium? Try it. I am currently very curious about lino cutting, and as usual on a tight budget, so I am waiting for erasers and a starer linocut knife-thingie set to arrive so that I can play around with it. You don’t need the best paper, the best tools (talking to myself over here, I really want a Fude pen, I really do), you don’t need the most expensive brush or gadget to get started. Just do it!

Do it punk! That, my friends, is my current motto.

This one is a memory from the day of the past week when I dyed the tip of my hair pink. It was a long time dream and a big fear - what if I regret it?

Spoiler alert, I am not regretting it.

I have been craving colour so much the last few days…so I took out my box of coloured pencils and tried to make something with them. I wanted vibrancy and life…I am still figuring my way there, but here they are.

I have always been someone who compares herself to others. Something rooted in my childhood for sure…talk of hobbies or studies, I was always compared to that other kid who did better. I hated it but someway I also incorporated it in my being.

When talking about art, I worked myself into a burnout by trying so hard to be someone else. Like many of us do, I would look at my art heroes. Admire them. And - and here I think lies the big mistake - trying to BE them. I wasn't working 100% at expressing who I am, because I was so busy with tutorial after tutorial, and googling what pen or pencil should I use, and looking for courses to be just like them. Because I like their work, they are successful, and I want to be appreciated too. And probably a part of me thinks that what I have to offer is not enough anyway - my therapist will like that I figured it out on my own lol.

I can pinpoint when this shifted for me.

I had surgery at the start of February. For my hospital stay, I took with me a little sketchbook and a mechanical pencil. I was in the process of learning to feel more at ease with graphite, to be able to draw in a more sketchy and loose way, hopefully to become exactly as Loish, one of my art heroines. Not as skilled as she is, but exactly like her. This is important.

What I didn't factor in was the very good, heavy painkillers they give you after they slash your throat open. I was in this hazy state of half dream, speaking a lot of nonsense (they tell me) and seeing the most amazing things. My brain was particularly inclined to see bird women, moth women, and fish women.

Also, I was bored.

So I took my sketchbook out and, thanks to the druggage, for the first time - I think - since when I was 4 years old, I drew just for the joy of it. I wasn't performing. I wasn't thinking of who could like it. I wasn't thinking about “everyone-else-style-that-is-better-than-mine'‘. Nope. Just me, the paper and the pencil, and my urgency to record the fish woman that to me, in that moment, seemed to hold a very mysterious yet super important key to unravel the secrets of the universe. Or whatever. Lol.

When someone tells me they are frustrated by socials, they think they are not good enough, I always remind them that what we see online is curated. Our art heroes have their bad days. And even speaking of artists from the past, we really hardly get to see the many, many messed up sketches they happened to make. It's a skewed perception that is bound to make us always feel like losers.

At this point I had stumbled on Substack. Joy. Inspiration. People like me, sharing their daily work, their rough work, their less than perfect work, and still…showing up. I think observing how I reacted to this environment helped me to connect the dots.

And I finally, finally became a Nobody.

What I mean with this is…up until now, even if I deemed myself unworthy of success, the success is what I wanted. I wanted to be one of the few who made it. I wanted my art to be appreciated by many. I wanted the gallery shows. I wanted the prints sales. I wanted to be Someone. And that killed all the play, the spontaneity, the joy of finding out who I actually am.

Right now, I am most of the time able to keep my art practice as an act of self care and love - for me and for others. I create what wants to come, what I see in my mind, what I like. This drawing in pencil has been a revelation for me, because it just happened, easily, flowing out of me. And it is everything I have wanted from a pencil drawing of mine since months. The flow of lines, the vitality. It all happened when I loosened my grip, my need to control everything, and allowed myself to come out and play.

And now I decided…why not ink!

I used to draw a lot in ink in the past - pre burnout - but it was all lines and a lot of minute stippling. I have changed a lot since then, and I don't feel like that style represents me anymore. Back with a fountain pen in my hand, but with no idea of what will come up.

The difference from the past is that I am not that Wannabe Serious Artist. I do have artists who work with ink and I admire some of their techniques. But this is key. I am now able to say: I like what they did there for the shadow. I will see if it works for me too. I don't want to become them. I have no interest in being like them. I am, on the other side, so very curious to see where this will lead me. What will turn out from my ink play. Welcoming the messy, the so-so, the wow I like this. All of it.

And wondering what I will learn about myself during the process. While I am this Nobody, experiencing this extraordinary, glorious freedom to make mistakes.

I was able to take some pictures of this in-between season. The dead leaves leaving space to the first primroses, naked branches showing beautiful shapes…the sparks of colour of the little flowers blooming in between the grass.

I am not the most professional photographer, but I want to offer these as a gift to the community. Maybe you live in an area where there is little nature, or maybe you simply like what you see.

I didn't expect that it would happen right on the first day I joined - the inspiration part at least!

So here I am, having discovered The 100 Day Project, and already jumping in, all excited and eager!

My goal for the 100 days is to show up in my sketchbooks for at least 15 minutes every day. Most importantly, my goal is to learn to accept the mistakes, the mess, the imperfections, without letting my inner critic get (too much) in the way. Basically, stop worrying that my sketchbook doesn't look as pretty and tidy as some I have seen online and that I always admire, and rather allow it to become my safe space for an healthy art practice, soul journey and discovery of myself.

I would like to get much more familiar with pencil, but I will allow myself the freedom to play with other media if I feel like it.

And to hold myself accountable I will post in my notes here on Substack.
