But some of the knowledge that stays with us the longest enters our lives much more quietly.

For generations, much of Bhārata’s knowledge travelled this way.

It was not always separated into learning and living. Stories, arts, practices, festivals, food, language, philosophy and everyday rhythms carried ways of understanding ourselves and the world around us.

At Vyūha, one question continues to guide much of our work:

How do we make this knowledge meaningful to someone growing up today?

Not by asking them merely to preserve the past, but by creating opportunities to experience it, inquire into it and discover its relevance for themselves.

Over the past few months, this question has led us to create a few new online learning spaces.

Sometimes, it begins with a story.

A child is tucked into bed. The noise of the day has settled. And then comes a story.

For many of us, grandparents were once the original cultural storytellers. Through them, we encountered Kṛṣṇa’s mischief, Hanumān’s devotion, the dilemmas of the Mahābhārata, kings, queens, saints and seekers — often long before we knew words such as Itihāsa or Purāṇa.

Today, many children grow up far away from grandparents or without that everyday storytelling space.

Shubhrātri is our small attempt to bring some of it back.

A bedtime storytelling experience where children can simply listen to the stories of Bhārata, wonder about them and carry them into sleep. No worksheets. No tests. Sometimes, a story is enough.

And then, the child becomes a teenager.

The questions change. Their world is filled with music, films, friendships, fashion, social media and an endless stream of images and ideas competing for their attention.

Instead of asking young people to turn away from this world, perhaps we can give them better ways to engage with it.

• Why does this song affect me?

• Why did that disagreement feel so unfair?

• Why does one film scene stay with me long after it ends?

• What makes something beautiful?

These are surprisingly rich questions.

And they can become doorways into the Nāṭyaśāstra, Rasa, Rāga, Saṅgītaratnākara, Sāhityadarpaṇa and India’s remarkable traditions of understanding aesthetics and human experience.

This became Abhivyakti.

Every year, when the month of Aadi arrives, something changes not just in the calendar, but in the rhythm of life itself. Amman temples become brighter with lamps and flowers, village shrines fill with devotees, rivers begin to swell with the monsoon, and homes come alive with prayers, kolams, and the quiet anticipation of a sacred season. For many of us, these are memories inherited from our mothers and grandmothers. We grow up celebrating them almost instinctively, often without pausing to ask why these traditions came into being or what they were trying to preserve.

Perhaps that is the beauty of tradition. It does not always explain itself. It simply stays with us, quietly carrying the wisdom of countless generations until one day we begin to ask the questions our ancestors had already answered through culture.

The more I reflect on Aadi, the more I feel that it is not merely a month dedicated to the worship of the Goddess. It is a month dedicated to remembering our relationship with Prakṛti the living, creative force of Nature, revered across the Indian tradition as the Divine Mother. The Goddess in our temples is one expression of her. The flowing river is another. The fertile earth, the nourishing rain, the healing tree, the seed waiting patiently beneath the soil, and the gentle rhythm of the seasons are all expressions of the same sacred presence.

Perhaps this is why Aadi holds such a special place in the rhythm of the Indian year. It coincides with the arrival of the monsoon across much of the subcontinent, a time when the parched earth receives its first abundance, rivers begin to swell, seeds prepare to germinate, and the landscape quietly renews itself. It also marks the beginning of Dakṣiṇāyana, the Sun’s southward journey, traditionally regarded as a period of inward reflection rather than outward achievement. Just as Nature turns inward to nurture new life beneath the soil, Aadi gently invites us to cultivate gratitude, humility, and receptivity. Before there can be harvest, there must first be rain. Before there can be abundance, there must first be nourishment. Perhaps this is why the month is dedicated not to power or conquest, but to the Divine Mother the source from whom all life emerges and to whom all life ultimately returns.

What is beautiful is that this understanding is not confined to Tamil Nadu alone. We call this month Aadi in the Tamil calendar, but elsewhere in India the same sacred season carries different names and different memories. In Kerala, it is Karkidakam, affectionately known as the Rāmāyaṇa Māsa, when families gather each evening to read the Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇam. It is perhaps no coincidence that the Rāmāyaṇa itself unfolds amidst forests, rivers, mountains, and hermitages, reminding us that dharma is learnt not only in kingdoms but also in Nature. The forest is never merely a backdrop, it becomes a teacher.

In much of North India, this period falls in the month of Āṣāḍha, marking the beginning of Dakṣiṇāyana. In Odisha, Raja Parba celebrates Bhū Devī, the Earth Mother, allowing the land to rest before the next agricultural cycle begins. The names differ, the rituals differ, and the songs and foods differ, yet they all seem to whisper the same truth: before the earth gives, we must first learn to receive her with gratitude.

Perhaps this is one of the quiet strengths of Indian civilization. It never created a single festival to celebrate Nature. Instead, every region celebrated the landscape it knew best. River civilisations honoured their rivers. Agrarian communities honoured fertile soil and nourishing rain. Forest communities revered sacred groves. Mountain communities looked upon the hills as abodes of the Divine. The philosophy remained the same, but every culture expressed it in its own language. Unity was never achieved by making everyone celebrate the same way; it emerged because every tradition recognised the same sacred relationship between humanity and the natural world.

Our ancestors also understood something that feels surprisingly relevant today. Ideas survive only when they become part of everyday life. A philosophy discussed in a text may be forgotten, but a philosophy lived through festivals, songs, food, stories, and rituals becomes part of collective memory. Gratitude therefore became a celebration. Reverence became culture. Ecology became devotion.

A child standing beside her grandmother while lamps are lit on an Aadi Friday may not understand the philosophy of Prakṛti, but she understands reverence. A farmer offering the first prayer before sowing the fields may never use the language of sustainability, yet instinctively recognizes that the harvest depends not only on human effort but also on rain, soil, sunlight, and time. Culture often teaches what words cannot.

This perhaps explains why the observances of Aadi are so deeply interconnected. Across Tamil Nadu, many village temples celebrate their annual thiruvizha during this month. These festivals are deeply rooted in the life of the land. The village Goddess whether worshipped as Māriyammaṉ, Kāḷiyammaṉ, Draupadī Amman, or Aṅkāḷammaṉ—is not only the presiding deity of the temple but also the guardian of the fields, the rains, the health of the people, and the wellbeing of the entire community. Temple processions often move through the village boundaries, symbolically blessing the land, while communities gather in prayer, celebration, and shared meals. The sacred extends beyond the sanctum to embrace the fields, the water bodies, the trees, and the people who depend upon them.

During Aadi Perukku, celebrated on the eighteenth day of the month, families gather along the banks of rivers with flowers, turmeric, lamps, and simple offerings of food. Traditionally, different varieties of chitrannam (seasoned rice) are lovingly prepared and offered before being shared with family and community. The timing is deeply significant. It coincides with the monsoon-fed rise in river levels, marking the renewal of water that will nourish the fields in the months ahead. Farmers traditionally offer prayers before beginning the next agricultural cycle, acknowledging that no harvest is possible without the generosity of rivers, rain, and fertile soil. It is easy to describe this as “river worship,” but perhaps that misses the point entirely. The river is not worshipped because she is extraordinary. She is worshipped because she is indispensable. She nourishes the land, replenishes the earth, sustains villages, and carries life from one generation to another. By calling the river “Mother,” our ancestors transformed a natural resource into a sacred relationship. One does not exploit one’s mother. One protects her.

The Fridays of Aadi, celebrated as Aadi Velli, honour the gentle and nurturing presence of Śakti. Women traditionally offer turmeric, bangles, flowers, lamps, and maṅgalya items to the Goddess not merely as symbols of prosperity but as an affirmation of the feminine principle that nurtures, protects, and sustains life itself. The Tuesdays, Aadi Sevvai, remind us that the Mother who nourishes also protects. Village goddesses such as Māriyammaṉ, Kāḷiyammaṉ, and Aṅkāḷammaṉ are not distant celestial beings; they are guardians of the land, the harvest, water, health, and community wellbeing. Nature herself reflects this truth. She nurtures, yet she also restores balance whenever it is disturbed. Compassion and strength are not opposites; they are two expressions of the same Mother.

Even Aadi Pūram, celebrating Āṇḍāḷ, reveals this intimate relationship between devotion and Nature. Her poetry Thiruppavai is filled with flowers, rain clouds, birds, fragrant gardens, and blossoming groves. Nature is never merely the backdrop to devotion, it becomes a participant in it. The Sangam poets saw the world in much the same way. In their poetry, landscapes were never passive scenery. Mountains, forests, fertile plains, seashores, and deserts each carried distinct emotions and ways of living. Human life and the natural world were understood as one continuous relationship. Paripāṭal sings of rivers not simply for the water they carry but for the life, joy, and abundance they bring to entire communities. Silappatikāram seamlessly weaves festivals, seasons, agriculture, and the rhythms of the land into its narrative, reminding us that prosperity was never imagined apart from Nature.

Even the sacred landscapes surrounding our temples tell a story. Many Amman temples are associated with ancient neem trees, sacred groves, temple tanks (kulams), ponds, or rivers. These were never incidental architectural features. They replenished groundwater, sustained biodiversity, and nurtured village life. By locating temples beside water bodies and trees, our ancestors created living ecosystems where caring for Nature became inseparable from caring for the Divine. The temple was never meant to stand apart from its surroundings; it existed in harmony with them.

The scriptures echo this understanding. The Bhū Sūkta declares, “Mātā Bhūmiḥ Putro’ham Pṛthivyāḥ” “The Earth is my Mother, and I am Her child.” The Devī Māhātmyam repeatedly salutes the Divine Mother through the refrain, “Yā Devī Sarva Bhūteṣu...”—the Goddess who dwells in all beings. The Bhagavad Gītā speaks of Prakṛti as the Divine’s manifest nature, expressing itself through earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, and intellect. Across scriptures, philosophy, and literature, the message is remarkably consistent: Nature is not separate from the sacred. She is one of its most immediate expressions.

Today, we speak of climate change, sustainability, and environmental responsibility and rightly so. Yet I sometimes wonder whether our ancestors approached the same challenge from an entirely different direction. Laws can protect forests. Science can explain ecosystems. Policies can regulate rivers. But only reverence transforms the human heart. So they did something extraordinary. They made the river a mother. They made the earth a goddess. They made the tree sacred. They transformed gratitude into culture, trusting that people would naturally protect what they loved.

Sacred traditions endure because they become part of everyday life. Lighting a lamp, drawing a kolam, tying a thread around a sacred tree, offering the first harvest, or gathering beside a river may seem like simple customs, yet each quietly reminds us that we are participants in Nature’s cycles, not masters over them. In this way, culture became one of India’s earliest and most enduring forms of ecological consciousness.

Perhaps that is the quiet wisdom hidden within the month of Aadi. It does not ask us to perform more rituals. It asks us to rediscover why those rituals came into being. It reminds us that spirituality is not separate from the living world around us. Every flowing river, every ancient tree, every field waiting for rain, every flower placed before the Goddess is gently teaching the same lesson that we do not stand apart from Prakṛti. We live within her.

The timeless invitation of Aadi not merely to celebrate the Divine Mother in our temples, but to recognise her in every river that flows, every tree that shelters, every seed that germinates, and every drop of rain that renews the earth.

When we begin to see Prakṛti in this way, caring for Nature is no longer simply an environmental responsibility.It becomes an act of devotion.

She’d been in India since 1939, invited for a short visit, and then the war trapped her here. Italy joined Germany, and the British declared her an enemy alien. Six years of confinement followed: watched, restricted, not free to leave. So by the time she’s giving this course, she’s not a visiting expert dropping in with theory. She’s someone who has just spent six years living inside a culture whose everyday habits around raising children she’d had a long time to simply watch. Worth holding onto that fact as we go through what she actually says in the book, because it never comes up directly, but it’s hard not to hear it underneath.

The Absorbent Mind: A Theory Named, in a Culture That Already Practiced It Quietly

Her starting point is simple and a little strange: a child under six doesn’t learn the way we do. We sit down, pay attention, try to remember something. A young child doesn’t do any of that. The world just goes into them, the way water goes into a sponge, without effort and without them even knowing it’s happening. Language is the clearest example. No child sits down and studies grammar. It just arrives, fully formed, out of the air around them.

She splits this into two stretches. From birth to three, it’s completely unconscious. A two-year-old has no idea any “learning” occurred, which is exactly why none of us remember how we learned to talk or walk. From three to six, the child is still absorbing, but now they’ve started working on it deliberately: sorting, repeating, correcting themselves.

Montessori got here through method, years of careful observation, notes, comparison. It’s a theory built the way theories usually get built, from evidence upward. What’s worth noticing is where she was building it. Indian family life has long treated a baby’s earliest years as a period shaped by everything around it, not through anything anyone would call a curriculum, but through ordinary household habit: the sounds a baby is carried through, the rhythms of a kitchen, songs sung without a lesson plan behind them, a grandparent’s presence. Nobody in that home was running an experiment. It was simply how things were done.

Saṃskāra: A Word for Something Already Practiced at Home

There’s a word for something close to what Montessori was describing: saṃskāra (संस्कार), from sam (together, completely) and kṛ (to make, to do), meaning “that which is well formed” or an enduring impression. Across Yoga and Vedānta, saṃskāra refers to the subtle imprints left by every experience—impressions that settle beneath conscious awareness and quietly shape thought, habit, and action.

What is perhaps more interesting than the philosophy is how ordinary the word remains in everyday life. “Acche saṃskār milnā” (”to receive good saṃskāras”) is still commonly used to describe a child’s upbringing—not as a quotation from scripture, but as a simple recognition of what children absorb by growing up in a certain kind of home. It is less a formal doctrine than a lived tradition, passed from grandparent to parent to child through everyday practice, long before it became a subject of academic study.

Placed alongside Montessori’s observations, an interesting resonance emerges. Through careful observation, Montessori arrived at an understanding of childhood that closely parallels something that already had both a name and a place in everyday Indian life. This is not evidence that one shaped the other, but rather a quiet convergence between systematic study and a living cultural practice.

Rousseau, and a Philosophy Argued From an Armchair

None of Montessori’s theorizing came from nowhere, either. Nearly two centuries earlier, Rousseau had already argued that a child isn’t a small, incomplete adult waiting to be filled with knowledge, that nature has a plan for how a child grows, and the adult’s job is mostly to not interfere with it too early. He called it negative education: protect the child from being rushed into adult reasoning before they’re ready.

Montessori read him closely and kept the core of it, the child as a self-building creature, not a blank page. But where Rousseau stopped at philosophy, an imagined pupil, an imagined tutor, argued from an armchair, Montessori spent decades actually watching real children in real rooms. It’s a small, useful echo of the gap sitting between her and the households around her in Ahmedabad: theory built at a desk on one side, ordinary daily practice on the other.

Sensitive Periods, and a Ceremony Timed Around the Same Window

The second big idea in the book is what she calls sensitive periods: short stretches where a child becomes almost magnetically drawn to one specific thing, most notably a window for language and order in the earliest years, where the right kind of exposure goes in almost without effort.

There’s a small, specific custom worth placing next to this: Vidyārambha, also called Aksharābhyāsa, one of the traditional life samskāras, a simple ceremony that introduces a child to letters, usually performed somewhere between the ages of two and five. Nobody performing that ceremony was working from a theory of sensitive periods. It’s closer to something worked out slowly, over generations, through watching what tends to work at what age, and then folded into a small family ritual rather than written up as a study. Montessori arrived at a very similar window later, through notebooks and observation. The overlap in timing is worth noticing quietly, not as proof of anything, just a resonance.

The Prepared Environment, and Homes Already Built Around the Same Instinct

Montessori’s whole method rests on a simple belief: the environment doesn’t merely support learning. It is part of the learning. Which is why she cared so deeply about furniture scaled to small hands, materials within easy reach, and a room ordered enough for a young mind to make sense of it.

Vāstu Śāstra, the traditional Indian science of spatial design and dwelling, rests on a related intuition: that the arrangement of a home, its light, direction, openness, and proportions, directly influences the wellbeing and state of mind of those who live within it.

The two traditions do not share the same vocabulary. One is architectural and cosmological. The other is developmental and pedagogical. Yet they converge on a striking insight: a space is never neutral. It quietly shapes the person who inhabits it. That understanding had long informed the design of Indian homes, well before it emerged as an explicit principle in the Montessori classroom.

Normalisation, and a Familiar Idea About Fit

Montessori’s boldest claim is that a restless, scattered child isn’t showing you a child’s true nature. They’re showing you a child whose environment doesn’t fit them. Given real freedom in the right setting, children settle, focus, and choose purposeful work over chaos.

There is a related, older idea worth placing beside this gently: svabhāva, one’s own inherent nature, and svadharma, the way of living that flows naturally from it, both discussed in the Bhagavad Gītā. The general sense is that a person living in harmony with their own nature moves with a kind of ease, while someone pushed into an ill fitting role experiences friction, however well they manage it.

It is a broader, older idea about human life rather than childhood specifically. Yet the underlying insight is remarkably similar. Calm, focus, and right action arise from alignment rather than force. That is very close to what Montessori observed in a five year old working with thoughtfully prepared materials.

The Diminished Adult, and a Role Already Named

Everything above adds up to a much smaller job for the adult than “teacher” usually implies: preparing the room, observing without stepping in, removing what obstructs the child, and having the discipline to do nothing while the child works things out. Montessori is clear that this is often the hardest part for adults.

There is already a word, and a long tradition around it, that comes close to this kind of restraint. A common interpretation of guru derives it from gu, darkness, and ru, that which removes it. A guru is understood not as someone who fills a student with information, but as one who removes the obstacles that prevent understanding. The guru śiṣya paramparā rested on presence, observation, and patience as much as instruction.

Montessori arrived at a remarkably similar understanding of the adult’s role through careful observation of child development. The language is different, but the insight feels familiar. The word for it, in another tradition, had been there quietly all along.

Concluding Reflections

This is, in the end, exactly the kind of book I want to sit with slowly. Not a tidy comparison between a Western theory and an Indian one, set side by side as equals, but something quieter: a woman working her way, through careful observation, toward ideas that were already finding expression, in small and ordinary ways, within the culture she happened to be living among at the time.

What stays with me is not the theory itself. It is what the theory reveals about the actions already embedded in how a child is raised here. The Akṣarābhyāsa ceremony, marking the introduction to learning at a particular stage of childhood. The way a baby is held, spoken to, and sung to, long before anyone thinks of it as language exposure. The layout of a home, arranged with care for the people living within it. A grandmother who never read a page of developmental psychology, yet somehow understood the rhythm and timing of childhood.

None of this was written down as a formal method. It was simply lived, generation after generation, without anyone needing a study to explain why it worked.

Today we mostly work the other way around. We reach for a framework first, a stage, a window, a named theory, and then try to fit the child into it.

writing this blog made me realize the actions were never empty to begin with. They already carried the understanding inside them, quietly, long before anyone needed to name it. The work now isn’t to learn something new so much as to unlearn, the habit of needing a theory before trusting the action, and let a few of these older, ordinary practices speak for themselves again.

Every morning, before the world fully awakens, countless hands across South India bend down to draw a few dots on the ground. Slowly, graceful lines begin to weave around them, and within minutes an intricate pattern appears at the threshold of a home. For many, it is simply a beautiful tradition. For me, kolam has gradually become much more. The more I observed, practised, and reflected upon it, the more I realized that kolam is not just something we draw, it is something that quietly shapes the way we think, observe, create, and relate to the world around us. It is an artwork, a puzzle, a meditation, a lesson in mathematics, and above all, a way of living with awareness.

A Tradition That Lives Every Morning

For centuries, especially across Tamil Nadu, drawing kolam has been part of the rhythm of everyday life. Ancient Tamil literature mentions threshold decorations, but what fascinates me is not simply its age it is the fact that people still practise it every single morning.The threshold is an interesting space. It is neither fully inside nor outside. By drawing a kolam here, an ordinary entrance becomes a place of welcome.Without saying a word, it tells every visitor,“You are welcome.”

Traditionally, kolams are drawn using rice flour. This simple choice reflects another beautiful idea. The kolam is not only for the people entering the house; it also feeds ants, birds, and other tiny living beings. Long before sustainability became a modern concern, practices like this reflected an understanding that human life is inseparable from the larger ecological world around us.

Kolam itself exists in many forms. The familiar Pulli Kolam begins with a grid of dots. Chuzhi Kolam creates flowing loops around these dots, while Neli Kolam connects them through graceful curves that resemble flowers and stars. Among them, Sikku Kolam remains one of my favourites, a single continuous line weaving around the dots without crossing itself. Every pattern carries its own rhythm, yet all of them reveal an extraordinary balance between order and imagination.

When the Hand Begins to Think

One lesson kolam taught me surprised me the most.The hand often learns before the mind understands.

Every new kolam feels like solving a puzzle. You begin with a simple arrangement of dots and gradually discover the path the line must follow. There are rules, but there is also freedom. There is logic, yet there is imagination. As the patterns become more intricate, the mind begins to notice symmetry, rhythm, proportion, and relationships between spaces almost without effort. What looks like art slowly becomes mathematics. Symmetry, geometry, sequencing, topology, and pattern recognition are all hidden within these elegant forms. It is no surprise that mathematicians and computer scientists have studied kolam for its algorithmic beauty. Yet while drawing it, mathematics never feels intimidating. It becomes playful, intuitive, and deeply satisfying.

I often think kolam is one of the finest examples of experiential learning. We understand concepts not because someone explains them to us, but because our hands, eyes, and mind discover them together.

The Quiet Rhythm of Space

Drawing a kolam demands only one thing: your complete attention.The hand moves steadily. The eyes follow every curve. Gradually, the noise in the mind begins to settle. Without realizing it, the practice becomes a form of meditation. The repetitive movement, the careful observation, and the search for balance create a quiet rhythm that is remarkably calming. It reminds me that mindfulness does not always require sitting in silence. Sometimes it begins by simply being fully present in what we are doing.

As an architect, I cannot help but notice how closely kolam relates to space. Like architecture, it organizes space through geometry, rhythm, proportion, and balance. It transforms an ordinary threshold into a meaningful place. It creates identity without walls and welcomes without words.

The same rhythm appears in Indian music and dance. Just as a rāga or a dance composition follows structure while allowing creative expression, kolam too finds freedom within discipline. Every curve has a rhythm. Every loop has a cadence.

Perhaps this is what makes Indian Knowledge Systems so remarkable. Knowledge was never divided into subjects; it flowed seamlessly between art, science, philosophy, craft, music, architecture, and everyday life. Kolam is one of the most beautiful examples of this integrated way of knowing.

Why Kolam Still Matters

Today, conversations around education often focus on creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning. Interestingly, kolam has quietly nurtured all these qualities for generations. A child learning kolam is also learning geometry, symmetry, pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, observation, concentration, fine motor skills, patience, and creative thinking.

In many traditional households, children did not first learn the theory of symmetry or geometry. They learned by watching, imitating, making mistakes, and trying again. Knowledge emerged through experience. Imagine if kolam found a place in schools not merely as an art activity, but as a bridge between mathematics, design, culture, ecology, and mindfulness. More importantly, imagine if it became part of our everyday learning, reminding us that education is not confined to classrooms or textbooks. Traditional practices like kolam show us that some of the most meaningful learning happens through observation, participation, repetition, and reflection.

Perhaps this is what the ancient saying reminds us:

“सा विद्या या विमुक्तये”

“Sā Vidyā Yā Vimuktaye”
True knowledge is that which liberates.

Kolam does exactly that. It frees learning from the boundaries of subjects and returns it to lived experience.

More Than a Pattern

The longer I engage with kolam, the harder it becomes to define it.

It is art. It is mathematics. It is architecture. It is meditation. It is hospitality. It is ecology. It is a way of paying attention. Most importantly, it reminds me that beauty is not something extraordinary. Perhaps the greatest wisdom of kolam is not the pattern we leave on the floor, but the pattern it quietly leaves within us.

Perhaps Tomorrow Morning...

Before you step into another busy day, pause for just a few minutes. Place five dots on the ground. Let your hand discover a path between them. There is no need to create a perfect kolam. Simply enjoy the process. You may begin by drawing a pattern. But you might end by discovering a quieter rhythm within yourself.

Confessions.
The Story of My Experiments with Truth.

Just the titles. Nothing else yet.

One puts the self forward. One puts truth forward. And hidden inside that difference is so small it looks like a stylistic choice.

but it is an entire philosophy of what learning is, what it is for, and who it belongs to.

This is where it gets interesting.

The confession and the experiment

Rousseau sat down in the 18th century and wrote what is arguably the most honest book a human being had written about themselves until that point. He announced it without embarrassment: he was presenting himself to the world, and to God, exactly as he was. No softening. No flattery. The full inventory.

The confession is a particular kind of act. It requires a witness. You confess to someone. You turn outward, toward the world, and say: here I am. See me. Understand me. Know me first before you judge me.

The self, in this act, is the subject. The self is also the destination. Truth, in the confessional tradition, is what you arrive at when you are finally, completely honest about yourself.

Now read Gandhi’s title again.

Experiments with Truth.

The self is not even in that sentence. There is a method, an experimentation. There is an object, in this case the truth. And somewhere behind the sentence, almost invisible, is the person doing the experimenting. Gandhi barely appears in his own title. He is the instrument, not the subject.

He even says so in his introduction. A friend pointed out that autobiography is a practice peculiar to the West. Gandhi agreed. And then he wrote one anyway, but from a completely different centre of gravity. Same form. Different question entirely.

An ancient distinction

The Kaṭha Upaniṣad, one of the oldest texts on the nature of perception and knowledge, draws a line between two fundamental orientations of attention.

When the senses are excessively turned outward, one looks outward and not inward. One suffers the snare of the changeable, perishable world. But the wise see with their eyes turned inward, toward what is prior to sensation, prior to the reacting self. They orient not toward the objects of experience but toward the very source of consciousness itself.

These two orientations have names.

Bahirmukha. Outward-facing. Attention moving toward the world, toward objects, toward how one appears and is received by others.

Antarmukha. Inward-facing. Attention turned not toward the self as an object of interest, but toward what is prior to the self. Toward the source from which awareness itself arises.

The bahirmukha, the Upanishad tells us, enjoys the objects of the senses. The antarmukha enjoys truth, which is knowledge and bliss.

Now bring these two orientations to the two autobiographies.

Rousseau as bahirmukha

Rousseau is bahirmukha even in his most intimate moments of self-examination.

He goes very deep into himself. He is extraordinarily honest about what he finds there. But the object he finds is always himself. And he is always, even in his deepest confessions, writing for someone. The world is in the room with him. The witness is required. The confession only exists in relation to an audience that receives it.

This is not a failure. It is an orientation. And it is one that produced genuinely extraordinary things. Rousseau’s honesty about his own formation, about how warmth drew him out, how fear shrank him, how a single book found freely could change the direction of a life — gave the world some of its most important thinking about what education does to a human being.

But there is something the bahirmukha orientation cannot quite reach on its own.

When the self is always at the centre, even the most sincere inquiry tends to circle back to the self. The learner who is always oriented toward the external audience, toward the teacher, the examiner, the institution eventually cannot tell the difference between knowing something and being seen to know it.

The question underneath every act of learning becomes: am I getting this right in the eyes of someone watching? And that question, asked often enough, quietly replaces the more essential one: what is actually true here?

Gandhi as antarmukha

Gandhi’s inward movement is structurally different. And this is where antarmukha enters, not as a spiritual ideal but as a lived practice of inquiry.

When he writes that he has searched himself through and through, examined and analysed every psychological situation, he is not accumulating self-knowledge in Rousseau’s sense. He is doing something more precise. He is removing himself as a source of distortion. The experiments with truth are only valid if the experimenter is not contaminating the results. And the contamination comes from old conditioning, from desire, from attachment to a particular outcome.

Gandhi’s inward work is the continuous clearing of those distortions. Not to know himself better. To see the truth more clearly.

This is antarmukha as a discipline of learning. The attention turns inward not to find the self but to purify the instrument so that what is real can be perceived without the self getting in the way.

And here is what it produces: Gandhi keeps disappearing from his own book. The experiments are foregrounded. The principles are foregrounded. The self running the experiments is almost incidental. Not because Gandhi is modest. Because a transparent instrument does not draw attention to itself. It allows what it is perceiving to be seen.

What this means for the learner

A learner oriented bahirmukha is always, even in moments of genuine reflection, asking a cluster of questions underneath the surface question. What does this mean for me? How does this change me? Am I getting this right? Will this satisfy the person watching?

The self remains the reference point. Learning is measured by what it does to the self-image.

A learner beginning to move toward antarmukha is asking something different.

The shift cannot be forced. It cannot be installed as a technique. But it can be cultivated. And what cultivates it is not a better curriculum or a more sophisticated examination system. It is the quality of the space in which learning happens. Whether that space asks the learner to perform, or invites the learner to perceive.

The same form, a different centre of gravity

What is remarkable about Gandhi’s autobiography is that he did not create a new form. He took the Western autobiographical form and used it from an antarmukha orientation. The form remained. The centre of gravity shifted completely.

The result is something the autobiographical tradition had not quite produced before. A book that looks like a self-revelation from the outside but functions like a sādhana log from the inside. A record of practice. A documentation of what was tried, what was found, what was revised, what held.

Not the story of a self. The record of a discipline.

This is not a rejection of the Western form. It is an enrichment of it. Gandhi did not say the confession is inferior. He simply brought something the form had not fully expressed, an orientation in which the self becomes transparent rather than central, in which truth is the destination rather than the self-image.

Both orientations matter. A complete learner needs both.

Bahirmukha grounds us in the world, in relationships, in the honest accounting of how we have been shaped. Antarmukha is what lets us stop explaining ourselves and start paying attention.

The Kaṭha Upaniṣad, did not say the outward-facing is wrong. It said the wise see with their eyes turned inward. Wisdom is not the rejection of the world. It is the ability to perceive the world without the distorting lens of the self standing between the learner and what is true.

The question worth sitting with

Go back to the two titles.

Confessions.
The Story of My Experiments with Truth.

Rousseau wrote his book for a witness. He wanted the world, and God, to see him exactly as he was. Every page is turned outward, toward someone reading. That is bahirmukha. Attention facing out.

Gandhi wrote his book for truth. He is barely in his own title. He calls himself an experimenter, not a subject. He turns his attention inward, not to study himself, but to clear himself out of the way, so he can see clearly. That is antarmukha. Attention facing in.

Both men looked inward to write these books. That part is the same. But what they were looking for was different. Rousseau went inward to find himself, and then held that self up for the world to see. Gandhi went inward to find his own distortions ,his desires, his attachments, his old conditioning and clear them away, so that what remained could see truth without interference.

This is the real difference between the two orientations.

Bahirmukha asks: how do I appear? Am I understood? Am I getting this right in front of others?

Antarmukha asks a different question: what is actually true here, once I stop worrying about how I appear?

Most of us learn like Rousseau, most of the time, without choosing to. We check ourselves against the room. We measure what we know by whether someone else is satisfied with it. This is not wrong. It is natural, and it is how we are shaped by the world.

But Gandhi shows there is a second movement available to us. Not instead of the first. After it, or alongside it. A movement where the self stops being the point, and truth becomes the point instead.

So when you sit down to learn something today, ask yourself honestly:

which book am I writing right now? Am I confessing or presenting myself, hoping to be understood, measuring myself against someone watching? Or am I experimenting quietly setting my own reactions and old patterns aside, so I can see what is actually there?

Three More Working Frameworks: Rasa, Nyāya, and Tridoṣa

Rasa Theory in DP Language and Literature

Bharata Muni’s Nāṭyaśāstra, written sometime between the 2nd century BCE and 2nd century CE, is the oldest surviving treatise on Indian performing arts and the source text of Rasa theory. Bharata’s central claim, the Rasa Sūtra , is that no meaningful idea is conveyed in art unless a Rasa, an aesthetic emotional experience, is evoked in the audience. Bharata originally identified eight Rasas; the ninth, Shanta or peace, was added by the 11th century commentator Abhinavagupta, giving the now standard Navarasa.

Here is how the nine Rasas work as a literary analysis framework:

Śṛṅgāra (Love): The aesthetic of romance, attraction, and beauty. Often called the “mother of all rasas,” used to analyse texts built around longing, courtship, or devotion.

Hāsya (Laughter): Comedy, wit, and the absurd. Useful for texts that use humour to make a serious point land more sharply.

Karuṇā (Compassion): Grief, pathos, tragic loss. The Rasa most often used to analyse tragedy and elegy.

Raudra (Anger): Fury, righteous indignation, conflict. Useful in texts driven by injustice or confrontation.

Vīra (Heroism): Courage, valour, determination. The Rasa of epics and quest narratives.

Bhayānaka (Fear): Dread, anxiety, the uncanny. Useful for analysing horror, suspense, and texts that destabilise the reader.

Bībhatsa (Disgust): Revulsion, the grotesque. Often paired with satire or moral critique.

Adbhuta (Wonder): Astonishment, awe, the marvellous. The Rasa of magical realism and texts that defamiliarise the everyday.

Śānta (Peace): Tranquility, renunciation, resolution. Added later, and often the Rasa a narrative arrives at after working through the others.

A DP Language and Literature student analysing a poem or play can ask, alongside the standard literary toolkit of theme, structure, and Aristotelian catharsis: which Rasa is this text trying to produce in me, and through which devices? This gives students a second, emotionally precise critical vocabulary that Western literary theory does not contain an equivalent for.

The Nyāya Pramāṇas in DP Theory of Knowledge

The Nyāya school, founded by the sage Gautama, treats epistemology as its central concern and is widely considered the closest ancient Indian system to contemporary analytic philosophy. It identifies four pramāṇas, or valid sources of knowledge. This is a precise, four-part framework, not the three-part version sometimes loosely cited.

Pratyakṣa (Perception): Direct sensory contact with an object. This is considered the foundational pramāṇa, since the other three ultimately depend on it.

Anumāna (Inference): Reasoning from observed facts to an unobserved conclusion, structured formally through a five-step syllogism. Nyāya‘s logic here predates and parallels Aristotelian syllogism.

Upamāna (Comparison): Knowledge gained by recognising the similarity between an unfamiliar object and a familiar one, for example learning what an unfamiliar animal is by being told it resembles one you already know. Nyāya treats this as a precise, independent source of knowledge, not merely a casual analogy.

Śabda (Testimony): Knowledge gained from the statement of a reliable, trustworthy source. Nyāya divides this into scriptural and secular testimony and is explicit that the source must be truthful and free from deception or error.

A TOK student comparing “ways of knowing” can use the four pramāṇas as a direct, structured counterpart to the Western epistemological toolkit: Pratyakṣa against empiricism, Anumāna against the scientific method’s reliance on inference, Upamāna as a formal account of analogical reasoning that Western epistemology treats far more loosely, and Śabda as a rigorous framework for evaluating when testimony should count as knowledge at all; a question very much alive in TOK discussions about historical sources and expert authority.

Tridoṣa in MYP and DP Sciences

The Caraka Saṃhitā, the earliest and most authoritative text of Āyurveda, opens by introducing the Tridoṣa, the triad of Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha that governs all physiological and psychological function in the body. Health, in this framework, is the state of equilibrium between the three; disease is the state of imbalance.

Vāta (Air and Space): Governs movement, the nervous system, and circulation. Qualities: dry, light, cool, mobile.

Pitta (Fire and Water): Governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation. Qualities: hot, sharp, intense.

Kapha (Earth and Water): Governs structure, stability, and immunity. Qualities: heavy, slow, steady, cool.

Every individual has a unique constitutional proportion of the three, called Prakṛti, established at conception, which Āyurveda treats as the basis for a genuinely personalised approach to health, diet, and lifestyle.

A Biology or Health Sciences student studying human physiology can use Tridoṣa as a live comparative case: it is, structurally, an ancient constitutional profiling system that anticipates the much newer Western field of personalised medicine, and asking why Western biomedicine took centuries longer to arrive at individualised treatment models is a genuinely good TOK or Biology Extended Essay question.

What IKS Integration Actually Looks Like: A Framework

Most conversations about integrating IKS into curricula stop at the content level. They say “include Āyurveda“ or “reference the Vedas” and call it done. That is not integration. That is a footnote.

Real integration happens at three levels: how teachers are trained, how learning is structured day to day, and what physical spaces support that learning. Here is what each of those looks like in practice.

1. Teacher Training in IKS Frameworks

Research on IKS integration consistently identifies teacher preparedness as the primary bottleneck. You cannot ask an IB teacher to bring the Panchabhuta framework into a Design class if they have never encountered it as a thinking tool themselves.

IKS based teacher training needs to do three things.

First, give teachers direct experiential encounters with IKS frameworks, not lectures about them. A teacher who has walked through a Panchabhuta material audit of their own classroom will know how to lead students through one. A teacher who has used the Nyaya pramanas to evaluate two conflicting sources in their own subject will know how to bring it into TOK.

Second, make the training subject specific. An MYP Design teacher needs different IKS tools than a DP Biology teacher or a DP Literature teacher. Generic “IKS awareness” workshops are not enough.

Third, build in ongoing mentorship. The Guru Shishya model of sustained, contextual guidance is precisely the teacher development structure that IKS itself prescribes, and it is also what teacher training research consistently recommends over single day workshops.

Contemporary IKS educators recommend hands-on training workshops that “deliver practical guidance, showcase best practices, and encourage interdisciplinary approaches, enabling educators to meaningfully embed IKS content within mainstream academic frameworks.” For IB schools specifically, this means curriculum mapping sessions where IKS frameworks are embedded directly into unit planners, listed alongside the global context and key concept, not offered as optional enrichment.

2. The Learning Structure: Five Moves in Every Unit

Here is a practical unit structure that integrates IKS pedagogy into any IB subject. It draws on both the Gurukul tradition of learning by doing and the IB’s existing inquiry framework.

Move 1: Observe directly.
Before any reading, research, or analysis, students engage their senses with the actual subject of inquiry. This is rooted in Pratyaksha, direct perception, the foundational pramana in the Nyaya tradition. Take the class outside. Handle the materials. Smell the soil. Listen to the space. A design student mapping a brief through Panchabhutas starts here, not with a search engine.

Move 2: Map relationships.
IKS does not treat knowledge as isolated data points. As scholars note, IKS “emphasizes deep respect for nature and its interdependence with human life.” In this move, students build relationship maps: between materials and ecosystems, between a design choice and its downstream effects, between a text and the cultural conditions that produced it. In Science, this is systems thinking. In Design, this is ecological accountability. In Literature, this is contextual reading.

Move 3: Bring a second knowledge framework.
This is where IKS content enters as an analytical tool. Panchabhuta for Design. Rasa theory for Literature. Tridosha for Biology or Health Sciences. The Nyaya pramanas for TOK. The brief is always: use this alongside your existing tools, not instead of them. What does it show you that the standard framework did not?

Move 4: Make something.
The Gurukul model was distinguished by hands-on real world tasks as core pedagogical acts, not extracurriculars. Making is thinking. Students build, prototype, cook, grow, construct, perform, or compose. The IKS principle here is that knowledge which cannot be enacted is not yet knowledge. This maps directly onto MYP Criterion C (Creating) and the Extended Essay’s requirement for genuine independent research.

Move 5: Reflect and give back.
The Gurukul system placed great emphasis on Svadhyaya (self study and reflection) and Seva (selfless service to the community) as the final acts of learning. In this move, students ask two questions: what did I learn about myself as a learner, and who does this work serve? CAS reflections written through this lens become more honest and specific than the standard creativity activity service framing, because they ask students to name a real act of service and a real act of self knowledge.

3. The Physical Space: What an IKS Learning Environment Looks Like

Contemporary IKS educators argue for “Makerspaces and experiential learning centres rooted in Indian traditions” as the physical infrastructure for this kind of learning. For an IB school, that means something specific.

It means a design studio with natural materials alongside digital tools. Clay next to a 3D printer. Seeds and soil next to a laser cutter. It means a garden that is also a biology lab, where students track plant health through both Ayurvedic dosha principles and standard ecological metrics. It means a performance space where students learn Rasa theory by performing, not by reading about it. It means a documentation wall where students record what they observed, what they connected, what they made, and what they gave back.

None of this replaces the IB’s existing infrastructure. It extends it into the physical, sensory, and ecological dimensions that IKS pedagogy requires and that the IB’s current classroom design does not address.

The Evidence Based Case: Programme by Programme

The IB’s curriculum review process is ongoing, with updates for first teaching in 2025, 2026, and 2027. The IB has shown willingness to evolve, and has explicitly acknowledged the need for “the further inclusion of non western literature and history” in its programmes. That is a starting point. Here is what the evidence says the IB gains, programme by programme, from genuine IKS integration.

PYP: The PYP already values inquiry, sensory learning, and transdisciplinary themes. But IKS based teacher training adds the methodological depth to make those values real in practice. A PYP teacher trained in Gurukul style mentorship and direct observation knows how to guide a six year old’s genuine inquiry rather than simply scaffold them toward a predetermined answer.

MYP Design: The MYP Design cycle is rigorous but limited to a Western design thinking tradition. Adding the Panchabhuta framework as a parallel design specification gives students a second analytical lens that is locally rooted and globally relevant. Research shows that when IKS frameworks are introduced into technical education through active pedagogy, student engagement and understanding measurably improve.

DP TOK: TOK is the most natural home for IKS epistemology, but right now, indigenous knowledge systems appear as one area of knowledge among eight, treated with the same brief attention as “religious knowledge systems.” The Nyaya school’s four pramanas, its rigorous account of what counts as valid knowledge and why, deserve the same serious treatment as Descartes or Popper in a TOK classroom.

DP ESS: DP Environmental Systems and Societies urgently needs non Western case studies. Indian traditional water management (johads, kunds, baolis), forest governance (sacred groves, Van Panchayats), and agricultural ecology (polyculture, seed saving) are not supplementary examples. They are working solutions to problems that contemporary ESS is still trying to solve.

DP Sciences: Tridosha theory gives Biology and Health Sciences students a structured, ancient constitutional model to compare against modern personalised medicine, a genuinely productive line of TOK and Extended Essay inquiry.

DP Language and Literature: Rasa theory gives students a nine part emotional analytical framework that sits alongside, and meaningfully differs from, the Aristotelian and reader response traditions they are otherwise taught exclusively.

CAS: The CAS framework calls for reflection on service, creativity, and physical activity. The Gurukul’s Svadhyaya and Seva model deepens that reflection by asking not just what did I do, but what did I understand about myself, and what does this community actually need from me.

Meanwhile, India’s NEP 2020 has committed to this integration at a national level, with over 8,000 institutions beginning IKS curriculum adoption and NCERT reviewing textbooks for grades 3 to 12 through an IKS lens. IB World Schools in India that ignore this are creating a strange split in their students’ educational lives: IKS at home, in NCERT, in national policy, but absent from the international programme they attend every day.

That split is not neutral. Research shows that ignoring a student’s knowledge background “presents an irrelevant and exclusionary curriculum” and “creates a divide between educational institutions and the students they are supposed to serve.” That is not a philosophical problem. It is a pedagogical failure with measurable consequences for student engagement and identity.

The Bottom Line

The IB is a strong curriculum. It is not a complete one.

It gives students a rigorous process for inquiry. It does not give them a tradition to be curious from. It gives them a framework for design. It does not give them the ecological accountability that Indian design traditions built over millennia. It gives them Theory of Knowledge. It does not give them the Nyaya school’s formal account of how knowledge is actually validated.

IKS fills those gaps. Not by replacing what the IB does, but by doing what the IB cannot do alone: rooting learning in the lived material and intellectual world of students across the globe, training teachers to bring that world into the classroom as a working framework, and building spaces where learning happens with the hands and the senses, not just the mind.

The International Baccalaureate is, by most measures, a remarkable educational project. Founded in Geneva in 1968, it now reaches over 1.95 million students across 6,200 schools in 163 countries. Its mission is to develop “lifelong learners who thrive and make a difference.” The Primary Years Programme does not rank six-year-olds against each other. The Diploma Programme asks seventeen-year-olds to write a 4,000-word independent research essay. The Theory of Knowledge course asks students to sit with the question of how they know what they know.

These are not small things.

So this is not an attack on the IB. It is a conversation the IB curriculum designers themselves need to be having.

A 2025 qualitative study of 47 IB teachers across multiple countries found that educators consistently felt the need to “modify IB content to align with their local cultural, linguistic, and socio-political contexts,” and that the challenges were “particularly pronounced” in subjects like Theory of Knowledge. Separately, scholars studying IB’s global expansion have put this question plainly: “How could these schools create a culturally unbiased global curriculum when the adopted models have been developed by Western societies?”

That question is still waiting for a real answer.

The IB professes international-mindedness but was built almost entirely within a Western educational tradition. And for students in India, where over 300 IB World Schools are operating, this gap is not theoretical. It shows up in classrooms every day, in what gets treated as rigorous inquiry and what gets treated as cultural background.

What the IB Curriculum Actually Contains

Before we talk about what is missing, let us be precise about what is there.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is for children aged 3 to 12. It organises learning through six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, including “Sharing the Planet” and “How We Express Ourselves.” The PYP does not use formal examinations. Assessment is feedback-driven and continuous across four dimensions: monitoring, documenting, measuring, and reporting on learning. Children are not ranked against each other.

The MYP runs for five years across eight subject groups: Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. A minimum of 50 hours of teaching per subject group per year is required. Unit planning uses “global contexts,” including “Identities and Relationships” and “Globalisation and Sustainability.” These are natural entry points for IKS. In practice, they remain largely untapped.

The DP is the most recognisable programme. Students pick six subjects from six groups: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. All students complete three core components: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity Activity Service. The maximum score is 45 points: 42 from subjects and up to 3 bonus points from TOK and the Extended Essay combined. Students need a minimum of 24 points to earn the diploma. Standard level subjects involve 150 teaching hours; higher level involves 240.

The CP blends at least two DP courses with a career-related study and four core components: Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning, Language Development, and a Reflective Project.

Running through all four programmes is the IB Learner Profile: ten attributes every IB student works toward. Inquirer. Knowledgeable. Thinker. Communicator. Principled. Open-minded. Caring. Risk-taker. Balanced. Reflective.

Now, the IB is not entirely blind to knowledge diversity. Since 2014, TOK has included “Indigenous Knowledge Systems” as one of its eight areas of knowledge, and official IB research on TOK acknowledges indigenous knowledge as a legitimate epistemic category.

That is a meaningful step on paper. But there is a large gap between including IKS as a discussion topic in one course, and actually training teachers in IKS based methods, or building IKS frameworks into how students learn across Design, Sciences, and the Arts. The IB has done the first. It has not done the second. And that is the gap this essay is about.

Where the IB Runs Out of Road

Here is what the IB’s curriculum does well: it provides a consistent, rigorous framework for inquiry, critical thinking, and skills development. Here is what it does not provide: a pedagogical tradition rooted in the lived intellectual world of students in India, or anywhere outside a broadly Western educational context.

This is not a value problem. The IB’s values are genuinely good. It is a method problem.

Take the MYP Design cycle. It moves students through criterios A to D, namely, Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating. This is design thinking in the tradition of IDEO and Stanford’s d.school: human centred, problem framed, prototype driven. It is a good method. But it carries assumptions that go unstated: that problems are discrete and bounded, that good design is primarily about user function, and that material choices are evaluated through cost and manufacturability, not through ecological or cultural accountability.

Now take a student in an IB school in Pune doing a product design brief. The MYP design cycle gives them a process and criteria. What it does not give them is a framework for asking: what is the relationship between the materials I am choosing and the earth those materials came from? What does this object give back, and to whom?

These are not add-on questions. They are central to how Indian craft traditions, architecture, and medicine have always evaluated the quality of a made object. And they are questions an IB trained teacher, without IKS training, will not know how to ask.

That gap is not filled by telling students that indigenous knowledge systems exist. It is filled by training teachers to bring those frameworks into the room as active thinking tools, not as historical footnotes.

Research confirms this directly: when IKS concepts were taught through active, design thinking pedagogy in engineering programmes, student understanding and engagement significantly deepened compared to conventional lecture based instruction. The finding points in both directions. IKS content benefits from active pedagogy. Active pedagogy benefits from IKS content. They are not competing. They need each other.

The IB gives students the active pedagogy. It is missing the IKS which brings the light and value with its content and the teachers trained to bring it in.

What IKS Actually Is (And Why It Is a Pedagogy, Not Just a Subject)

IKS is not folklore. Scholars define it as “a wide array of indigenous intellectual, cultural, scientific, and philosophical traditions cultivated and transmitted in the Indian subcontinent over several millennia.” But more importantly for our argument here, IKS is a teaching tradition, not just a knowledge archive.

Consider what IKS actually does, pedagogically.

The Gurukul system, the primary institutional form of IKS education, was built entirely on learning by doing. Students did not sit in rows and receive information. They farmed, cooked, built, cared for animals, studied astronomy by observing the sky, and learned grammar by speaking and being corrected in real time. The Guru Śiṣya relationship was a mentorship model: deeply personalised, sustained over years, embedded in community life. This is experiential learning in the fullest sense: learning through doing, reflecting on experience, and applying it immediately in context.

This is not the same as the IB’s inquiry cycle, even though there are overlaps. The IB’s inquiry is primarily cognitive and text based, even in its most active forms. The Gurukul model made no distinction between head and hand, between knowing and doing. Farming was botany. Cooking was chemistry. Building was geometry. The discipline and the practice were one thing.

IKS also carries a body of content that maps directly onto every IB subject group. Brahmagupta formalised algebra and the concept of zero. Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī, written around the 4th century BCE, is the world’s first formal grammar and is still studied by computational linguists today. The Caraka Saṃhitā is a clinical medicine text of genuine sophistication. The Nāṭyaśāstra articulates a theory of emotional response in performance that has no equivalent in Western aesthetic theory. The Arthaśāstra addresses governance and political economy. Vāstu Śāstra guided architecture through a structural understanding of the five elements, an integrated systems framework long before systems thinking was named as a discipline.

The point is this: IKS is not just content to be added to the IB curriculum as a cultural exhibit. It is a set of pedagogical methods, a teaching tradition, and a body of working analytical frameworks that can actively improve how students learn across the IB’s existing subjects.

The Pañcabhūtas as a Working Design Framework

Let us stay concrete, because this is where the argument matters most.

Vāstu Śāstra is a structural science focused on keeping the harmony of all five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, with all directions and energies. It is one of the oldest applied frameworks in Indian Knowledge Systems, used historically to guide the planning and construction of homes and temples. And critically, the same research confirms that these five elements correspond directly to the five human senses, taste, smell, sight, hearing, and touch, with the explicit goal of keeping equilibrium between the elements inside the body and outside it.

That is the part that makes Pañcabhūta usable as a design framework rather than a cultural reference. It was never meant to be decorative. It was meant to be diagnostic: a way of checking whether something built is in balance with the people who will use it and the world it sits within.

Product designers can use this same lens, adapted from architecture to objects and digital products. Here is what that looks like, criterion by criterion:

Earth (Pṛthvī): Stability, grounding materials, weight, durability. Think ergonomic bases, tactile grounding textures, materials that feel solid and trustworthy in the hand.

Water (Āpa): Flow, adaptability, fluid user journeys. A product or interface that moves the user smoothly from one state to the next, without friction or dead ends.

Fire (Agni): Energy, light, warmth. This shows up in colour palettes, screen brightness, and the parts of a design that are meant to draw attention or signal urgency.

Air (Vāyu): Breathability, whitespace, ventilation. In physical products, this means room to move and adjust. In interfaces, this means whitespace that lets the user’s attention rest.

Space (Ākāśa): Openness, minimal clutter, room for the user’s attention. The most overlooked of the five in most design education, and arguably the most important: knowing what not to add.

Here is how that plays out as an actual MYP Design brief. A student designing a water bottle will, through the standard design cycle, research ergonomics, materials, user behaviour, and production costs. Necessary, but incomplete. Add the Panchabhuta lens as a parallel design specification: does the bottle’s material honour Āpa, the water it holds, in taste and temperature? Does its base give it Pṛthvī, a grounded, stable feel? Does the cap or lid allow Vāyu, some give, some breathability, rather than a fully sealed rigidity? Does its surface or colour carry any Agni, any warmth, or is it coldly functional? Does its form use Ākāśa with intention, taking up only the space its purpose requires?

This is not romanticising an ancient text. A peer-reviewed comparative review argues that this framework aligns with principles in seismic design, environmental psychology, and contemporary architecture, now extended into product and digital design, where it functions as a working accountability check alongside the MYP’s existing Criteria A through D.

These are not decorative additions. They are analytical tools that make students better at the skills the IB already claims to teach.

Long before modern science began exploring the effects of sound on plant growth, our traditions encouraged us to speak to plants, sing near them, nurture them with affection, and regard them as members of the family.

Today, as researchers investigate how sound vibrations influence plant physiology, many are rediscovering a question that our ancestors seemed to have asked centuries ago:

Can plants listen? Perhaps the answer lies not only in biology but also in our relationship with nature itself.

The Fascinating Story of Tulasī and rāgam Yamunā Kalyāṇi

A popular story often shared in Indian musical circles speaks of the sacred Tulasī plant responding positively to the rendering of rāgam Yamunā Kalyāṇi. Some enthusiasts even draw a poetic connection between the flow of the river Yamunā and the Svarasthānam (melodic structure) of the rāgam.

According to traditional belief, the river’s gentle movement carries patterns of sound and vibration that resonate with the essence of rāgam Yamunā Kalyāṇi. Since Tulasī grows abundantly along the Yamunā’s banks, people have wondered whether there exists a subtle relationship between the plant, the river, and the musical frequencies associated with the rāgam.

Whether this connection can be scientifically proven or not, the symbolism is profound. It reminds us that in the Indian worldview, nature, music, water, and life are interconnected expressions of the same cosmic rhythm.

Modern science does not suggest that plants “hear” in the same way humans do. Plants do not possess ears, auditory nerves, or brains. Yet 1research has shown that plants can detect and respond to mechanical vibrations in their environment. Sound is, after all, vibration. Certain frequencies have been observed to influence seed germination, root development, flowering patterns, and nutrient uptake. 2Researchers have found that plants can react to vibrations generated by wind, insects, rainfall, and even specific sound frequencies.

Scientists believe that these vibrations may activate cellular pathways, alter gene expression, and influence hormonal responses within plants. In other words, plants may not hear music as a melody but they can certainly respond to vibration.

Beyond Sound: The Energy of Care

Anyone who has cared for a garden knows a curious truth. Two plants may receive the same soil, water, and sunlight, yet one flourishes while the other struggles. Traditional cultures often attribute this difference to the quality of care and attention given to the plant. Across India, people speak to plants while watering them. Farmers chant prayers before sowing seeds. Sacred groves are treated with reverence. Tulasī is worshipped daily in countless homes.

From a scientific perspective, the act of nurturing plants more attentively naturally improves their health. A person who cares deeply is likely to water correctly, notice diseases early, and maintain healthier growing conditions. From a traditional perspective, something deeper is occurring. The intention, affection, and consciousness of the caretaker become part of the environment in which the plant grows.

Whether we describe this as “energy,” “vibration,” or “presence,” Indian knowledge systems have long maintained that life responds to the quality of attention it receives.

Music in Nature: The Universe as Sound

Indian philosophy places extraordinary importance on sound. The ancient concept of Nāda Brahma declares that the universe itself is sound. Creation begins with vibration. The sacred syllable “Oṃ“ is considered not merely a chant but the primordial vibration from which all existence emerges. In this worldview, music is not entertainment alone. It is a force that influences the mind, body, and environment. Many rāgams are associated with specific times of day, seasons, emotions, and natural states.

Stories occasionally circulate in devotional and social media circles describing Tulasī plants flourishing when exposed to Rāga Yamunā Kalyani or devotional music. While these anecdotes are meaningful expressions of cultural belief and inspire curiosity, they have not yet been validated through controlled scientific studies. They nevertheless invite an interesting dialogue between traditional wisdom and modern plant science.

Listening to Nature Again

In an age dominated by technology, perhaps the deeper message is not whether plants listen to us. Perhaps it is whether we are listening to them. The rustle of leaves, the rhythm of rainfall, the murmur of rivers, and the melodies of ancient rāgams all remind us that life unfolds through vibration, relationship, and harmony. A Tulasī plant growing beside a home may not understand language as humans do. Yet it responds to sunlight, water, touch, care, and the environment we create around it.And perhaps that is the wisdom our ancestors sought to preserve: When we nurture life with attention, respect, and love, growth naturally follows. Not only in plants but in ourselves as well.

Yet, as you scroll through countless tabs, an unsettling sensation often creeps in a feeling of profound isolation, coupled with an inexplicable creative paralysis.

This is the central paradox of today’s learner: we are physically free, yet structurally constrained; hyper-connected to data, yet completely detached from meaning.

To understand why this happens, we must look past superficial diagnoses like “digital fatigue” or “lack of discipline.” Instead, we need to trace how our very understanding of learning has been institutionalised. The structural constraint is not a padlock or a policy , it is psychological. It is the internalised demand that learning must be authorised from outside: by an institution, a syllabus, a credential, or a platform’s progress bar.

Phase 1: The Architecture of the Schooled Mind

When Ivan Illich wrote about the need to “deschool” society, his primary target was not the brick-and-mortar schoolhouse, but the internal conditioning that an institutionalised society implants within the human psyche. Illich observed a fundamental psychological shift that occurs when education is outsourced to a centralised bureaucracy:

“The pupil is thereby ‘schooled’ to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is schooled to accept service in place of value” (Illich, 1971, p. 1).

This confusion of process with substance creates what Illich termed “institutional counterproductivity” — when a bureaucratic system grows so pervasive that it actively defeats its original purpose. A system built to foster human development expands until it achieves a radical monopoly over our imaginations. Knowledge is no longer something you pursue — it is something that gets delivered to you, packaged by technocrats, certified by professionals, and validated by external authorities.

Once this conditioning takes root, a learner stops trusting their own curiosity. They wait. They wait for a syllabus to tell them where to begin, for a certificate to tell them they are done, for a grade to tell them whether what they understood was real. The learning never quite belongs to them — it belongs to the institution that authorised it.

Phase 2: The Limits of the Sovereign Self

This structural paralysis is amplified by a deeper philosophical friction. The modern educational and corporate landscape is built on the Western model of the Sovereign Self , the presumption that the human being is an isolated, autonomous individual, accumulating knowledge as private capital to compete in a market.

When you sit alone at night checking off modules on an online learning platform, you are experiencing this model in its purest, most exhausting form. You bear total individual responsibility for your upskilling, yet you are completely severed from the relational tissue that gives knowledge its life, context, and ethical gravity. You are physically free, but intellectually stranded.

This is historically anomalous. Learning was rarely, across most human traditions, understood as a solitary act of self-improvement.

It is worth being precise about what the problem is, however. The Sovereign Self is not simply an error , the insistence that individual curiosity matters, that a learner’s own questions are worth pursuing, is a genuine and defensible value. The problem is what happens to that self when autonomy becomes its only resource: when it is cut off from community, from tradition, and from the kind of presence that allows understanding to deepen beyond what any individual can reach alone.

Consider the Bhagavad Gītā , as a record of how understanding actually arrives. Arjuna, one of the greatest warriors alive, collapses on the battlefield. He has access to every skill he has ever trained. He knows strategy, archery, warfare. And yet, in the moment that truly matters, none of it is enough. What breaks him out is not a new module or a better framework. It is presence — Krishna beside him, willing to stay inside the difficulty, thinking it through together until clarity comes.

What the Gītā is pointing at is this: certain kinds of understanding cannot be reached alone. Not because the individual is weak — Arjuna is as capable as any learner can be — but because knowledge of that depth requires another human being to think against, to be witnessed by, to be drawn out by. The Sovereign Self, sealed inside its own autonomy, has no such mirror. It accumulates information but remains, at its core, stranded.

This is the exhaustion that no online platform can fix because the platform was built on the very model that created the exhaustion.

Phase 3: The Practice of Intellectual Dispassion

If our isolation stems from chasing institutional validation, how do we break the loop? The transition from a “schooled” mind to an authentic learner requires not a new platform or a better curriculum , it requires an inner shift. Indian Knowledge Systems call this shift Vairāgya (वैराग्य).

While popularly translated as detachment or renunciation, Vairāgya in the context of learning means consciously letting go of the need for external validation ; the grade, the badge, the credential. It is the quiet internal shift from asking “what will this get me?” to “what does this genuinely mean?” Without this shift, no amount of access to knowledge actually liberates the learner.

But Vairāgya is not a switch one flips, nor a prescription that can be handed to a learner from outside. It is a disposition that develops slowly — through repeated honest encounters with the emptiness of external reward. Every time a certification fails to produce the understanding it promised, every time a completed course leaves one feeling hollow, Vairāgya quietly deepens. It is less a decision and more a gradual seeing-through — one slowly loses their taste for the packaging, and begins to hunger for the thing itself.

Vairāgya cannot be taught as content. It can only be modelled by teachers who are visibly in it themselves, who ask questions they do not already have answers to, who treat inquiry as something they are still inside rather than something they have completed. The classroom that produces Vairāgya is one where the teacher’s own curiosity is alive and unperformed.

When that hunger takes root in a learner, something fundamental changes. One stops waiting for permission to explore. Progress is no longer measured in badges but in the quality of questions being asked. This is the opening that genuine inquiry needs.

Phase 4: Constructing the Modern “Learning Web”

The ultimate liberation cannot remain purely internal. Illich argued that to dismantle the psychological monopoly of schooling, we must construct tangible, decentralised alternatives , what he called Learning Webs: horizontal, peer-driven networks that match learners based on mutual interest and autonomous need, with no institution gatekeeping the middle.

He imagined three simple mechanisms.

• Skill exchanges : where people trade what they know how to do, directly, without an institution validating the exchange.

• Peer matching : finding someone seized by the exact same question, not a teacher above you but a co-inquirer beside you.

• Open tools : physical and digital resources that anyone can walk up and use, ungated by rank or credential.

These are structural proposals. They tell us how to build the web. The IKS tradition tells us what quality of human relationship must inhabit it. ( using situation based actions)

• When Arjuna trained under Droṇa, there was no timetable, no module, no certificate waiting at the end. He rose before dawn, lived inside the practice, and absorbed archery through total immersion.

• When Yudhiṣṭhira sat with Vidura through the long nights before the war, two minds equally burdened by the same impossible question stayed with it together : no conclusion was imposed, no grade was given, the inquiry itself was the point.

• When students arrived at the āśramas of Bharadvāja or Vasiṣṭha, the only entry requirement was an honest question and the willingness to remain with it.

These are not a single, uniform tradition. They are different modes of learning relationship : immersive apprenticeship, peer inquiry, open access — each pointing at something Illich’s structural proposals leave unnamed: that what makes a learning space alive is not its openness alone, but the quality of attention that people bring to one another inside it.

A free web without that quality of attention becomes just another app. The invitation is to build spaces that are structurally open and relationally alive at the same time — and the IKS record, read carefully rather than nostalgically, offers one of the richest available accounts of what that looks like in practice.

Conclusion: Shifting from Compliance to Awakening

You have probably finished a course and felt nothing. That feeling is not a personal failure , it is the symptom of a schooled imagination. One that has been handed all the data in the world, but quietly stripped of the two things that turn data into wisdom: the freedom to pursue one’s own questions, and the presence of others willing to pursue them alongside you.

The sovereign cage was never made of iron. It was made of the belief that someone else must authorise your curiosity before it counts and of an isolation so complete that even when the gates opened, there was nowhere left to go.

Breaking out begins with Vairāgya , a loosening of the grip that validation-seeking has over inquiry. It continues into the harder work of building the conditions in which that loosening is possible: classrooms where the teacher’s curiosity is genuinely alive, networks where co-inquiry is the structure rather than the exception, spaces where an honest question is sufficient entry.

True learning has never demanded your compliance. It has only ever waited for your courage to begin without permission.

To our ancestors, a river was an active, nurturing participant in human life that shaped culture, values, and spiritual identity. Nowhere is this deep reverence more beautifully captured than in the ancient Vedas, which praised the mighty Sarasvatī river as the “best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses”(अम्बितमे नदीतमे देवितमे सरस्वति। Rigveda,Mandala 2, Sukta 41, Verse 16). The Sarasvatī was so central to this ancient way of life that an entire magnificent civilization flourished along its banks and became forever associated with its name.

The profound respect for this living, flowing intelligence was so deeply rooted that it became woven directly into the identity of the people themselves. Even today, though its physical waters have long since receded to become a paleochannel hidden beneath the desert sands, the memory of the river is kept alive. We can still see its legacy carried forward proudly by people who bear surnames like Saraswat, reminding us that an ancient river was never just a temporary geographic feature, but an eternal, life-sustaining relationship.

Dialogue Over Domination

There is a remarkable story in the Vedic texts about the great sage Viśvāmitra, who found himself standing before the mighty Beas (Vipāśā) and Sutlej (Śutudrī) rivers. Heavy rains had swollen the waters, leaving the rivers in full flood fast, immensely powerful, and highly dangerous. Faced with this impassable barrier, the sage did not curse the water or try to engineer a forced crossing. Instead, he did something profound: he entered into Samvāda, a respectful and equal dialogue. He simply asked the roaring rivers to pause for just a moment so he could pass.

The rivers replied to him, explaining that they were impelled by the greater forces of nature, known as Indra, and could not simply abandon their innate duty, or dharma, of flowing. This poetic exchange holds a quiet but powerful reflection for our daily lives. When we encounter a “flooded” situation, perhaps a sudden life crisis, an overwhelming responsibility, or a bitter conflict with a loved one our immediate instinct is usually to push harder. We try to overpower the ‘current’ of the problem. Yet, this story suggests that momentum must be respected.

By pausing instead of reacting aggressively, we allow ourselves to wait for the right, safe crossing point to reveal itself.

The Momentum of Emotion

In these ancient hymns, the rivers are described poetically as chariots in motion. This is essentially ancient hydrodynamics expressed as art. A river in full flood carries massive weight and travels at a high velocity, giving it immense physical momentum. It cannot simply stop in an instant without violating the very laws of physics. In ancient thought, these physical laws are entirely intertwined with Ṛta, the cosmic order that sustains the universe. The sun rises, the tides respond to the moon, and rivers flow endlessly downward because everything is participating in this same universal rhythm.

Our internal worlds operate on these exact same laws. Human emotions carry incredible momentum. Anger that has been simmering for months, or anxiety that has built up over years, cannot be switched off in a matter of seconds. Expecting our minds to halt instantly is like asking a flooded river to freeze in its tracks. A deeply observant mind recognizes an emotional flood early on.

By understanding the natural laws of our inner momentum, we can work alongside our emotional energy instead of exhausting ourselves by fighting against it.

The Ecology of Identity and True Nature

In Indian Knowledge Systems, a name is never treated as a mere label. Giving something a name is a deep practice of revealing its intrinsic character, known as Nāma-vimarśa. Every river carries a distinct personality, a unique Svabhāva or inner nature, and its name reflects the specific wisdom it brings to the world.

To ancient people, naming a river was a blend of ecology and psychology. The Ganga’s name means “that which moves swiftly,” and observing its flow teaches the human heart the value of persistence as it carves valleys over millennia. The Yamuna flows deep and dark, its name carrying the essence of inner restraint, depth, and quiet discipline. The Sutlej, known by its ancient Sanskrit name Śutudrī, translates to the “river of a hundred channels,” embodying the supreme art of adaptability as it spreads and shifts across the earth. Meanwhile, the Beas, originally known in Sanskrit as Vipāśā, is celebrated as the “unfettered one,” reflecting pure, uncontained freedom. Even the Godavari is recognized for its expansive generosity, and Narmada stands for being the ‘Giver of Pleasure’ and much for its spiritual significance.

This offers us a beautiful invitation to observe our own lives. We each have a distinct inner river. Whether we are naturally analytical, deeply empathetic, highly adaptable, or quietly resilient, harmony begins with self-recognition.

The art of living is not about forcing ourselves into someone else’s current, but understanding our own unique strengths and flowing authentically.

The Warning of the Dried Channel

There is also a sobering truth hidden in the geography of these ancient stories. The Sarasvatī river was once celebrated in the oldest texts as the absolute best of mothers and the greatest of rivers. Today, however, it survives only in memory, its ancient path visible only as a dried paleochannel hidden far beneath the sands of the Thar Desert.

It reminds us that no system - no matter how magnificent - can be permanent if the delicate balance of life is lost.

The Mind as a Flowing Stream

Perhaps the most universally relatable metaphor in this tradition compares the human mind, the Citta, to a river. Both the mind and the river are defined by Pravāha, which simply means continuous flow. Water is inherently pure, but as it travels, it gathers the silt and soil of the terrain it crosses. Similarly, human consciousness is naturally clear, yet it carries the deep impressions, or Samskāras, of all our past experiences and traumas.

When a river’s water becomes stagnant, it turns toxic and breeds disease. When our minds become trapped in obsessive thoughts or refuse to accept change, it inevitably leads to mental suffering. The health of both the river and the human mind depends on continuous movement. This is where the practice of meditation, or Dhyāna, comes in.

The Quiet Wisdom of Water

If we observe carefully, rivers offer profound guidance without ever speaking a single word. They show us that true transformation does not require violence; over time, the gentle, persistent touch of water can erode and reshape the hardest stone. When water meets an immovable obstacle, it doesn’t halt in defeat; it creates music, using the resistance to give its flow a voice. We also see that shallow streams make the most noise, while deep rivers move in a profound, powerful silence. And because every great river is formed by gathering countless smaller tributaries, we are reminded that our true strength comes from connection, inclusion, and the relationships we build with others.

We can easily bring this quiet intelligence into our modern routines. Taking a simple five-second pause to acknowledge the source of our water before we drink can instantly recalibrate our nervous system with gratitude. Acknowledging that our day is only as healthy as our very first morning thoughts helps us guard our mental spring. Furthermore, by practicing reciprocity by giving back to the world by reducing waste, conserving water, or offering simple acts of kindness we honor the ancient ritual of Arghya, moving away from endlessly extracting resources to building a sacred, continuous relationship with nature.

Flowing With the Whole

In many modern cities, we have chosen to build directly on top of our rivers, often burying them beneath concrete embankments. But in the older, ancient imagination of Bhārata, civilizations were built alongside and with the rivers, honoring their natural rhythms.

To live like a river is to understand that we are not separate, isolated observers trying to conquer the current of existence. We are moving, participative currents within it. The river never rushes to prove itself, it does not argue with the pull of gravity, and it does not stubbornly cling to its past shape. It simply flows, trusting its ultimate direction toward the ocean.

But here’s a question that Bloom’s never actually answers: how do you know that what you’re teaching children is actually true , and are you giving them the tools to find out for themselves?

That question , deceptively simple, enormously important , is where an ancient Indian epistemological framework called the Pramāṇas quietly does something Bloom’s was never designed to do.

What Bloom’s Actually Does (And What It Doesn’t)

Let’s be fair to Bloom’s first. It does something genuinely useful. It gives teachers a language for scaffolding cognitive complexity. It helped move classrooms away from pure rote memorization toward higher-order thinking. When a teacher asks “am I only testing recall, or am I pushing students to analyze and create?” Bloom’s is a solid tool for that conversation.

But notice what Bloom’s is actually doing: it’s a process framework. It tells you what to do with knowledge once you have it. Move it up the pyramid. Remember it, then understand it, then apply it, then analyze it, then evaluate it, then create something new from it.

What it never asks is: where did this knowledge come from? And is it actually reliable?

This is not a minor gap. A student can climb all the way to the top of Bloom’s pyramid , can “Create” at the highest level, while building entirely on faulty foundations. They can design a science experiment based on a flawed inference. They can write a persuasive essay drawing on a single unreliable source. They can analyze data they’ve fundamentally misread. Bloom’s has no mechanism to catch any of that. The pyramid just keeps climbing, regardless of whether the ground beneath it is solid.

The framework also has a hidden philosophical bias baked into its structure. By placing “Create” at the top and “Remember” at the bottom, it quietly encodes a very particular Western academic preference: that abstract, generative thought is the pinnacle of intelligence, and that concrete, perceptual knowledge is somehow lesser. This assumption is so deeply embedded in how we design curricula that most educators have never even noticed it’s there.

Enter the Pramāṇas

The Pramāṇas, from the Sanskrit word meaning “proof” or “means of knowledge” , is a framework developed across millennia in Indian philosophical traditions including Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā, and Advaita Vedānta. Unlike Bloom’s, it was not designed as a classroom tool. It is a complete theory of how valid knowledge works , an epistemological system that begins at the most fundamental question possible: what makes knowing something actually count as knowledge?

There are six Pramāṇas, and together they map every legitimate channel through which human beings can come to know something true.

Pratyakṣa is direct perception , what you know through your senses, but also crucially, what you know through internal experience. The direct, felt knowledge of grief, joy, or pain is as epistemically valid here as seeing something with your own eyes. This is not a small point. It means that lived experience is treated as a genuine source of knowledge , not a subjective distraction from “real” learning.

Anumāna is inference , drawing conclusions from observation through chains of reasoning. You don’t see the fire, but you see the smoke, and you know what smoke means.

Upamāna is knowledge through analogy and comparison , understanding something new by recognizing its structural resemblance to something already known. This is foundational to mathematics, science, and law, yet Bloom’s has no dedicated category for it at all.

Śabda is verbal testimony , knowledge gained from reliable sources, whether texts, experts, or traditions. Critically, the framework insists you ask: is this source actually trustworthy? Testimony is not automatically valid. Its validity depends on the credibility of who is speaking.

Arthāpatti is postulation, the kind of reasoning where you must assume a hidden fact because without it, something else you know to be true would make no sense. It’s closer to what Western philosophy calls “inference to the best explanation.” Your friend is known to be alive and well, but isn’t home when you visit, you postulate they’ve gone out, because that’s the only coherent explanation. It’s not quite inference, not quite observation. It’s its own thing, and it shows up constantly in real-world problem solving.

Anupalabdhi is knowledge through absence , the non-perception of something as valid evidence that it isn’t there. You look around the entire room and see no elephant. That absence itself is your proof. This matters enormously in diagnosis, forensics, and scientific falsification, and Bloom’s simply has no place for it.

A Classroom That Shows the Difference

Imagine you’re teaching Grade 8 students about climate change. Here’s what a standard Bloom’s-based lesson looks like: students memorize CO₂ data, explain the greenhouse effect in their own words, calculate carbon footprints, compare renewable and fossil fuel statistics, critique a government energy policy, and finally design a school sustainability plan. Tick all six levels. Lesson complete.

Now ask yourself: did any student, at any point, stop to ask how they know what they know? Did anyone interrogate whether the data they were working with was reliable? Did they examine the source of the study they cited? Did they think about what isn’t there, which species are disappearing, which glaciers are no longer visible in photographs that are fifty years old?

A Pramāṇas-informed classroom asks all of that , not instead of the Bloom’s progression, but woven through it.

Students go outside and directly observe local temperature records, visit a riverbank, measure water levels, grounding the abstract in pratyakṣa. They then build explicit chains of anumāna: rising CO₂ plus melting ice data plus rising sea levels, therefore warming is continuing. They use the analogy of a car with closed windows heating in the sun to understand the greenhouse effect (upamāna) , and then, crucially, they examine where that analogy breaks down.

When they consult sources, they don’t just read them. They ask: is this śabda reliable? Who funded this research? Is the IPCC a more credible source than a think-tank sponsored by fossil fuel companies, and why? Teaching śabda is not just media literacy , it’s epistemological honesty. It teaches students that testimony is a legitimate form of knowledge and that its legitimacy has to be earned.

When students notice that a coastal city which should be having normal monsoon patterns is experiencing flooding more frequently, they must figure out why, that’s arthāpatti in action: postulating the only coherent explanation for a fact they cannot otherwise make sense of.

And when they look at old photographs and see glaciers that are no longer there, they are practicing anupalabdhi: using absence itself as evidence. That kind of reasoning , the ability to understand what missing data means, is something that Bloom’s never teaches at all.

By the time these students reach the “Create” stage and design their sustainability plan, they haven’t just processed information, they have interrogated the validity of that information at every step of the way.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

We are living in an era of contested knowledge. Misinformation spreads faster than correction. Students are exposed, daily, to claims that feel like facts, inferences dressed up as certainties, testimony from sources whose credibility is manufactured rather than earned. Bloom’s gives them thinking skills. It does not give them epistemic tools, the ability to ask “how do I know this, and should I trust it?”

The Pramāṇas framework does. And it does so not by adding a bolt-on critical thinking module to the curriculum, but by building epistemic questioning into the very structure of how knowledge is approached.

There’s also something important about what the Pramāṇas does with lived experience. A student who has experienced chronic illness has a form of pratyakṣa , internal, direct perception , that no textbook can replicate. A student who has grown up in a community facing water scarcity knows something about resource management that isn’t available through any secondary source. The Pramāṇas framework validates these as genuine knowledge sources. Bloom’s has no real category for them.

What This Means for Teaching

Bloom’s was always a tool for sequencing instruction, not a theory of knowledge. It tells you what levels to teach at. It doesn’t tell you whether what you’re teaching at those levels is epistemically sound.

Pramāṇas begins one step earlier, at the root question: what makes this knowledge valid in the first place? A classroom built on that question doesn’t just produce students who can think at higher levels. It produces students who can ask, at every level, how do I know this, through what channel, and what are the limits of that channel?

That question is what education is ultimately for. Not just to produce students who can create, but to produce students who know what it means to know.

There’s a small, scruffy school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1960s. Twenty-three children, most of them Puerto Rican and Black, many labeled “unteachable” by the public system. No bells. No grades. No one standing at the door with a clipboard checking attendance.

And yet learning happens. Not the anxious, performative kind that evaporates after the exam, but the kind that changes how a child walks through the world.

George Dennison’s The Lives of Children (1969) is a practitioner’s diary from this experiment, called the First Street School. It’s not a manifesto or a theory. It’s something rarer: an honest account of what happens when adults stop managing children and start meeting them. Reading it today outside the West, it reveals a fundamental clash between two entirely different ways of experiencing the world: one that treats life as a theory to be mastered, and another that treats life as an action to be lived.

The Tyranny of the “Method”

When we look at a twelve-year-old like José, who had been through years of public schooling and still couldn’t read, the standard institutional reflex is to look for a new method. We assume the plumbing is fine, but the water pressure is low; we just need better phonics drills, sharper diagnostics, or more rigorous tracking.

But as Dennison beautifully untangled, José hadn’t failed to learn.

José had learned, with terrifying efficiency, that reading was a space of shame and coercion. His defense mechanisms were perfectly rational responses to a system that treated knowledge as a commodity to be deposited into his head.

The modern school operates on a deep-seated cultural assumption: that human action must always be driven by explicit theories, doctrines, and codifiable rules. It values “knowing-about” the world over “knowing-to-act” within it. Because it privileges abstract information transfer over lived experience, it reduces the infinitely complex encounter between a teacher and a child into a series of predictable, repeatable steps.

When Dennison abandoned the lesson plans and simply walked around the block with José—talking about nothing in particular, letting the boy realize that this adult had no hidden agenda of humiliation—he was rejecting this entire theoretical framework. He understood that learning isn’t a cognitive deposit; it is an action-knowledge that arises naturally when two people are genuinely paying attention to each other. It is the space between them that acts as the crucible for understanding.

The Violence of the Representation

This shift from living experience to rigid abstraction is not an accident of history; it is a profound cultural displacement. If we trace how education transformed across post-colonial societies, the shift becomes stark.

Historically, instruction was a deliberative, deeply embedded process focused on imitable actions. A child learned how to navigate language, ethics, and society by watching an integrated living example go about the world. It was an experiential socialization into life.

However, under the pressures of modern administrative states, a violent inversion occurred: learning was forcibly converted into the representation of action. The living world was replaced by the textbook. Instead of interacting with reality, children were suddenly required to memorize descriptions about reality. Domains of rich, fluid experience were codified into rigid prose and standardized metrics.

When a first-generation learner from a marginalized community enters a modern municipal school today, they face this exact structural wall. They are asked to bypass their vibrant, immediate reality to decode a highly artificial, abstracted syllabus. If they stumble over a standardized language that feels alien to their tongue, they are instantly labeled “slow” and subjected to remedial drills.

But the tragedy isn’t the child’s capacity; it is the fact that the system has substituted the representation of learning for learning itself. Dennison’s diary is a radical record of what happens when you reverse this historical damage. By refusing to let a standardized checklist stand between himself and José, he stepped out of the world of representations and returned to an environment where instruction is lived rather than tested.

The Defensive Mask of the Functionary

This obsession with external metrics inflicts a quiet trauma not just on the child, but on the teacher. In contemporary debates, we are constantly trying to refine the function of the teacher—evaluating them on “learning outcomes,” curriculum coverage, and data entry. We have transformed the educator into a content-delivery mechanism, buried under documentation, attendance apps, and administrative surveillance.

To survive in this environment, a teacher is forced to hide behind a professional mask. They show up to the classroom not as a whole human being, but as a fragmented functionary of an institution. They project an armored, defensive authority based entirely on control.

But the human psyche doesn’t respond to roles; it responds to presence. A child, especially one who has carried the weight of systemic exclusion or personal trauma, has a radar for authenticity. They instantly sense when an adult is performing a function rather than occupying a space.

At the First Street School, the teachers didn’t hide behind clinical neutrality. They brought their whole selves into the room—their frustrations, their uncertainties, and their absolute moments of not knowing what to do. This vulnerability wasn’t a weakness; it was the very container that allowed the children’s internal turbulence to settle.

Real integration within a learner cannot be forced through behavioral manipulation; it is absorbed by being in the presence of someone who is actively engaged in their own inner alignment. A child discovers their own capacity for coherence when they are held within the steady, authentic gaze of an adult who is fully present.

Breaking the Mirror

The ultimate tragedy of contemporary education is that we have become trapped in a form of cultural amnesia. We look at our institutional failures and try to fix them by importing the latest Western progressive trends or data-driven software, completely blind to the fact that the very architecture of our schooling is a caricature of nineteenth-century factory administration.

We look at organic, relational ways of being together and dismiss them as “romantic” or “unscientific” simply because they cannot be measured by an administrative yardstick. We have been trained to misrecognize our own inherent cultural strengths.

George Dennison did not invent a new pedagogical technique on the Lower East Side. Rather, by stripping away the bureaucratic apparatus of the modern state, he cleared the ground to let a universal truth re-emerge.

Children do not need to be managed, surveyed, or engineered into learning. They need to be met. They need to be held within communities where their actions have real, tangible weight, and where adults have the courage to show up without a clipboard. The path forward is not a frantic search for the next modern method, but a willingness to remember what we have always known about the transformative power of relationship.

Conclusion: Designing the Container for Living Classrooms

If that sounds familiar, welcome to what psychologist Erik Erikson called an identity crisis, a period of deep confusion about one’s sense of self, values, and purpose. It often peaks in young adulthood, but in the contemporary world, the conditions that intensify this crisis begin much earlier. Children today grow up within powerful social, economic, digital, and ideological structures that constantly tell them who they should be and what makes them valuable.

Advertising industries associate beauty with fairness, thinness, luxury, and desirability. Consumer culture teaches that happiness and self-worth can be achieved through brands, possessions, and endless self-reinvention. Social media algorithms reward visibility, performance, attractiveness, and conformity to trends, while influencer culture transforms identity itself into a curated performance designed for approval and validation. Entertainment industries reinforce narrow ideals of masculinity, femininity, success, and popularity, and educational and economic systems increasingly reduce human worth to productivity, achievement, and competition. Political and ideological environments further pressure individuals to fit into rigid categories of identity and belonging. Together, these structures blur the distinction between the authentic self and socially manufactured expectations, leaving many young people unsure whether their desires, goals, and identities genuinely belong to them or have been constructed for them.

In this sense, the modern identity crisis is not merely an individual psychological struggle but a cultural condition. And here is the surprising part: Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), the vast body of wisdom developed through traditions such as Āyurveda, Yoga, Vedānta, and Indian philosophy, have been reflecting on this exact problem for centuries, asking profound questions about the difference between the constructed self and the deeper self beneath it.

The crisis is not that you do not know who you are. It is that you have been looking for yourself in the wrong places.

The Real Culprit: Ahaṁkāra

In IKS, ahaṃkāra (meaning “I-maker”) is the part of your mind that constantly constructs a story about who you are, based on your grades, your job title, your social media profile, your family’s expectations, your relationship status.

The Sāṃkhya school of Indian philosophy, which forms the ontological backbone of Yoga, identifies this as the root of the problem. When you tie your identity to things that can change, and when everything can change, you become fragile. One rejection, one failure, one comparison spiral on social media, and the whole structure collapses. Anxiety is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that ahamkara has been doing all the heavy lifting, and it was never meant to.

You are not your outermost layer

The Taittirīya Upaniṣad, one of the principal Upaniṣads of the Vedic tradition, offers a remarkable map of the self called the Pañca Kośa model, pancha meaning five, kośa meaning sheath or layer. It describes five concentric layers of who we are, from outermost to deepest. Far from being abstract philosophy, this framework can completely reframe how you experience an identity crisis.

1. Annamaya Kośa: the Food Body

The outermost layer: your physical body, made of and sustained by food. This is the layer most people lead with in identity, how I look, how fit I am, whether I match a particular ideal. When someone says “I hate my body,” they are mistaking this transient sheath for the whole self. The body is real and important, but it is a vessel, not the self.

2. Prāṇamaya Kośa: the Energy Body

The layer of prana, vital life force, breath, and mood. When you are sleep-deprived, heartbroken, or anxious, your energy body is disturbed. Many identity crises are partly a pranamaya crisis: chronic depletion making everything feel meaningless. Yogic breathwork (Prāṇāyāma) works directly at this level, which is why even five minutes of conscious breathing can shift how you see yourself and your life.

3. Manomaya Kośa: the Mind Body

The layer of thoughts, emotions, memories, and fears. Most of modern life; social media, news cycles, comparison loops, operates at this level. When someone says “I am so anxious” or “I am a failure,” they are identifying with the manomaya kosha as if it were the final truth about themselves. It is not. It is like the weather, it passes.

4. Vijñānamaya Kośa: the Intellect Body

The layer of discernment, conscience, and the constructed sense of “I.” This is where ahaṃkāra, the ego-identity, lives. It is also where we can choose. The intellect can distinguish between the self that watches and the self that performs. When it is well developed, it serves as a bridge toward the deepest layer rather than a trap that confuses the performance for the person.

5. Ānandamaya Kośa: the Bliss Body

The deepest layer, closest to pure consciousness. This is not bliss in the sense of pleasure, it is the quiet, unconditional aliveness that you sometimes touch in moments of deep sleep, absorption in creative work, or meditation. The Taittirīya Upaniṣad identifies this layer as the closest veil over the atman, the witnessing self that lies beyond all sheaths. You have not lost it. You have simply not been introduced to it yet.

Most of us spend our entire lives stuck in the outer three layers. Identity crisis happens when those layers shake and we have no access to what lies beneath. The Taittiriya Upanishad does not ask you to ignore the outer layers. It asks you to stop living there.

Arjuna’s breakdown at Kurukṣetra

The Bhagavad Gītā, one of the most profound philosophical poems in the world, opens with one of history’s most dramatic identity crises. Arjuna, a great warrior, collapses on the battlefield. He drops his bow. He cannot act. He does not know who he is or what he should do. Sound familiar?

Kṛṣṇa’s response across eighteen chapters is essentially an extended conversation about identity. One of the most important things he says, in Chapter 2, is that you are not the body, and you are not the roles you play. The self that witnesses all your experiences, your confusion, your grief, your ambition, is untouched by any of it.

“anāditvān nirguṇatvāt paramātmāyam avyayaḥ śarīra-stho ‘pi kaunteya na karoti na lipyate ”

Translation: The Supreme Soul is imperishable, without beginning, and devoid of any material qualities, O son of Kunti. Although situated within the body, It neither acts, nor is It tainted by material energy.

Bhagavad Gītā 2.32

This one verse, if truly understood, dismantles one of the biggest drivers of identity crisis in young adults today: the belief that your worth is determined by your outcomes.

Dharma: identity as calling, not performance

The Mahābhārata and Bhagavad Gītā together offer dharma as an alternative to the achievement-based identity trap. Dharma is not a rigid career prescription. It is your natural orientation, the way you engage with the world when you are most alive. It is less about what you do and more about how you show up.

Many young adults suffer not because they lack ambition, but because they are performing roles chosen by others, by peers, by social media trends. Dharma asks a different question altogether: what arises in you naturally? What do you offer that feels effortless, and that serves someone else? That, the Gītā suggests, is your real identity anchor.

What you can actually do: practices for every age

These traditions are not just philosophy. They are deeply practical. Below are three entry points that require no prior knowledge and work just as well for a ten-year-old as they do for a twenty-five-year-old.

Svādhyāya: honest self-study

Svādhyāya means self-study, not self-criticism. Ten minutes a day of honest, non-judgmental reflection. Not venting. Observing. What triggered me today? What did I actually feel versus what I performed?

Prakṛti awareness: your nature is not a flaw

Āyurveda holds that each person has a unique constitutional nature, a combination of Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha. Understanding your Prakṛti reframes identity from comparative, meaning I am less than others, to inherent, meaning I am this, by nature. It gives you permission to be exactly how you are, without pathologising your intensity, your sensitivity, or your slowness.

The crisis is an invitation

Here is what these traditions, from the Taittirīya Upaniṣad to the Bhagavad Gītā, most want you to hear: the identity crisis you are experiencing, whether you are nine or twenty-nine, is not proof that you are broken. It is proof that the false self, the one built from approval, achievement, and performance, has run out of road. And somewhere beneath it, something more real is trying to emerge.

The same is true for the child in your life who melts down after losing a game, for the teenager who feels invisible in school, for the young adult who wonders if the life they are living is actually theirs. In every case, your role as a parent is not to fix the crisis but to hold space for the question, and to trust that something more real is trying to emerge.

You are not lost. You are just finally asking a question worth asking.

Part One: Why IKS Needs to Be a Separate Discipline

The most common misunderstanding in the IKS curriculum debate is treating Indian Knowledge Systems as a body of content, a collection of facts, inventions, and traditions that need to find their way into existing chapters. Insert a reference to Aryabhata in the mathematics textbook. Add a paragraph on traditional water harvesting in environmental science. Mention yoga in physical education. Done.

This approach mistakes the map for the territory. IKS is not primarily a storehouse of historical achievements. It is a set of living systems of inquiry, of practice, of meaning-making that encompass Indian art, theatre, music, classical games, oral traditions, philosophy, debate, governance, and design. These cannot be inserted into a chapter. They must be experienced.

A student cannot understand the beauty of Bharatanatyam from a paragraph between two syllabus topics. A child cannot grasp the intellectual rigour of the purva paksha method which is the ancient practice of first fully articulating the opponent’s position before responding to it merely by reading a sidebar. A group of twelve-year-olds cannot discover what it feels like to think through the pramana framework, Nyaya system’s structured approach to valid sources of knowledge unless they are given time to argue, reflect, and return to the question. These traditions are experiential at their core. They require doing, and doing requires time that a packed subject syllabus, by design, cannot yield.

This is the first and most fundamental reason for a separate IKS period: certain forms of knowledge can only be transmitted through experience, and experience cannot be squeezed into the margins of another subject.

A Space Free from the Grammar of School

There is something else a dedicated IKS period makes possible that integration structurally cannot: freedom from the usual grammar of school life. Every regular period in a school timetable operates under a shared set of pressures like syllabus completion, formative assessments, board examination preparation, marks. These pressures are not incidental. They shape the entire texture of how teachers teach and how students receive.

The IKS period, precisely because it carries no board examination weight, can be structured entirely differently. It can hold debates rooted in classical Indian frameworks. It can make space for role-play, project work, storytelling, craft, and community inquiry. Students can engage with the Arthashastra not as a historical text to be memorised but as a governance framework to be applied to a school-level civic problem. They can practise purva paksha as a form of structured critical thinking. They can explore traditional Indian games not as curiosities but as systems of physical and cognitive development. This experiential approach scales perfectly to the earliest learners. For a Grade 1 or 2 student, a dedicated period means stepping outside to understand the Pancha Mahabhuta (five elements) not by memorizing a textbook diagram, but through guided sensory observation; feeling the distinct textures of earth, observing how wind moves leaves, and identifying these elements in their immediate environment. It establishes observation as a primary source of valid knowledge (pratyaksha) long before the technical vocabulary is introduced.

The absence of an examination in this hour is not a weakness. It is its most important pedagogical feature. When learning is unencumbered by the fear of assessment, curiosity takes its natural shape. In our Immersion Labs at Vyūha including Samagram, Sarathi, and Saundaryam, we have worked with students across diverse school contexts, including first-generation learners encountering IKS for the first time. The quality of engagement in those classrooms, when the pressure of marks is removed and the richness of the tradition is made accessible, is something that integrated content insertions simply cannot produce.

IKS Is the Missing Framework for 21st-Century Skills

Every school in India today is searching, often anxiously, for ways to teach entrepreneurship, leadership, financial literacy, sustainability, communication, and collaboration. These are understood as 21st-century skills, and in the absence of a coherent Indian framework for them, schools frequently import methodologies wholesale from the West like design thinking, Socratic seminars, Agile project management.

What is less often acknowledged is that India already has sophisticated, field-tested frameworks for all of these domains.

The Panchatantra is not a collection of moral fables for children. It is one of the world’s earliest and most structurally rigorous texts on strategic thinking, stakeholder navigation, and organisational behaviour. The Arthashastra contains frameworks for economics, statecraft, and leadership that remain analytically serious. The Nyaya school of philosophy offers one of the world’s most structured epistemological systems for argumentation and evidence-based reasoning. The principles of Yoga and Ayurveda provide frameworks for well-being, self-regulation, and sustainable living that are increasingly validated by contemporary science.

A dedicated IKS period is, in practice, an opportunity to deliver vocational and skill-based education grounded in the intellectual traditions of this land. Schools that frame it this way find that parental hesitation, understandably focused on practical outcomes, dissolves considerably. IKS stops being just heritage preservation and becomes a living toolkit for navigating the contemporary world.

What Policy Already Mandates

This is not a fringe pedagogical position. NEP 2020, in Section 4.27, explicitly states:

“An engaging course on Indian Knowledge Systems will also be available to students in secondary school as an elective.”

The Ministry of Education’s own IKS guidelines further describe a scope that encompasses mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, yoga, architecture, medicine, agriculture, engineering, linguistics, literature, sports, games, governance, and conservation. This is not a description of content that can be distributed across existing subjects as occasional references. It is a description of a course that is supplementary, dedicated, and designed to be engaging on its own terms. The policy envisions a separate period. What is needed is the institutional will to implement it.

Schools like TVS group schools, which have introduced a dedicated Vidya Day. A no-bag day structured around experiential cultural learning. DAV institutions with their Vedic studies programmes, Chettinad Harishree Vidyalaya, Vivekalaya institutions, and Chinmaya Vidyalayas, each running their own IKS-rooted programmes as distinct offerings, are not outliers. They are early evidence of what becomes possible when a school makes the institutional commitment to protect this hour.

Part Two: Why Integration Still Matters

Arguing for a separate IKS discipline is not an argument against integration. It is an argument about what each approach can and cannot carry.

Integration matters for a simple reason: a dedicated IKS period that exists in isolation from the rest of the school day risks becoming exactly what its critics fear, a silo, an add-on, a period students mentally bracket off from their “real” learning. The IKS period needs the rest of the school to be in conversation with it.

Content integration connects traditional water conservation practices to a climate science chapter, linking Vedic mathematics to a modern algebra lesson, drawing parallels between Indian architectural principles and contemporary design, keeps IKS alive and visible across the school day. It signals to students that this is not a separate world but a continuous one. It builds the connective tissue between the experiential learning of the IKS period and the conceptual frameworks of regular subjects.

There is also a deeper form of integration worth naming: not just what is taught but how. The pramana framework with its structured attention to sources of valid knowledge, the conditions under which a claim can be accepted, and the rigour of inference is not just an IKS topic. It is a pedagogical tool that can improve lesson design across subjects. A science teacher who structures a lesson around pratyaksha (direct observation), anumana (inference), and sabda (testimony from authoritative sources) is doing something both methodologically sound and culturally grounded. The IKS principles, when properly understood, have the potential to improve not just what students learn but how teachers teach. This deeper integration, however, cannot precede the dedicated period. A teacher cannot apply what they have not themselves encountered and practised. A school cannot embed an approach it has not first made space to understand. The IKS period is not an alternative to this vision of pedagogical integration. It is its necessary precondition.

Part Three: How to Integrate IKS Appropriately

The Failure Mode to Avoid

The greatest risk in IKS education whether in a dedicated period or in integrated content is presentation as a museum of ancient glory. IKS taught as a parade of dates, names, and achievements, as a catalogue of things India invented before the rest of the world, will feel exactly as alien to a contemporary student as critics fear. Worse, it will confirm the suspicion that IKS is about the past rather than the present.

This is not a structural problem. It is a pedagogical one. And it is entirely avoidable.

Speak to the Modern Mind

IKS must be taught in a way that speaks to the contemporary student using their own examples, addressing their own questions, and equipping them with frameworks they can use in daily life. When we teach the Nyaya system of debate to students in Grades 6 to 8 at Vyūha, we do not begin with the history of the Nyaya school. We begin with a disagreement or debate the students are already having. We give them a framework to structure it. We introduce purva paksha as a tool for genuinely understanding the other side before responding. By the time we name the tradition they have been practising, they have already experienced its usefulness.

This is the principle: the framework first, the name second. IKS taught as living practice, grounded in the student’s own experience, earns its own relevance.

Use IKS as a Skill Ecosystem, Not just a Subject

The most effective implementations of a dedicated IKS period treat it not as a subject with content to be covered but as a skill ecosystem to be inhabited. Debates, purva paksha argumentation, project work using traditional design principles, storytelling through Katha, collaborative problem-solving using frameworks from the Panchatantra, these are not ornaments to the period. They are the method.

This approach also directly addresses the concern that IKS without assessment will not be taken seriously. When students are arguing, building, presenting, and reflecting, the seriousness of the work is self-evident. It does not need an examination to validate it.

Train the Teachers First

None of this is possible without teachers who have themselves encountered IKS as a living tradition rather than a syllabus to deliver. The shortage of trained IKS teachers is a real and significant challenge. But it is worth being honest about the alternative: asking a mathematics or science teacher to implement IKS-integrated lessons without training, without support, and alongside their existing workload is no less demanding, and almost certainly less effective.

The dedicated IKS period has one structural advantage here: it makes the need for a specialist explicit. It creates a role, and roles can be filled, trained for, and built over time. At Vyūha, the process of working with 12 schools has itself been a process of developing this cadre of teachers and facilitators who can hold the IKS period with the depth and grace it deserves.

Acknowledge the Real Constraints

A dedicated IKS period cannot be installed by enthusiasm alone. It requires executive intent from school leadership, timetable restructuring, and parent endorsement. Parents who see no examination, no grade, and no direct connection to board results will reasonably ask what their child is gaining. The answer must be communicated clearly and early: this hour develops the capacity to think, argue, lead, collaborate, and create using frameworks from the richest intellectual tradition this land has produced. When that case is made well, and when students come home energised by what happened in the IKS period, the endorsement tends to follow.

Conclusion: Intelligent Implementation Needs Both

The debate between integration and a separate discipline is, in the end, a false binary. India’s schools do not need to choose. They need both and they need both implemented with intelligence and honesty.

Integration without a dedicated period translates into well-intentioned insertions into a frame that was never designed to hold this knowledge in its fullness. A dedicated period without integration risks becoming isolated into a rich hour surrounded by a school day that doesn’t know this knowledge exists in continuity and across all that they learn.

What we are working toward, in our schools and through our programmes, is a model where the IKS period is the experiential anchor, the space where students encounter the tradition directly, practise its frameworks, and develop a felt relationship with it and where integration ensures that this encounter continues to resonate across the rest of the school day.

IKS is too important, and too alive, to be reduced to a paragraph in a chapter. It is also too interconnected with how we think, how we learn, how we lead, and how we live to be confined to a single period. The work ahead is to do justice to both truths at once.

India has known this for centuries and the rest of the world is only beginning to catch up.

The shuttlecock in Badminton traces back to “Poona” in Maharashtra. The grandmaster logic of Chess descends from Chaturanga, a military simulation game. Modern wrestling finds its blueprint in the ancient Malla-yuddha. These are not fun facts, they are evidence of a civilisation that understood, long ago, that play is not the opposite of learning. It is learning.

Yet most of this heritage sits on the periphery: romanticised occasionally, integrated rarely, funded almost never. That is beginning to change.

The Philosophy Baked In

In the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), indigenous sports were never classified as mere recreation. They were among the 64 Kalās, a complete curriculum designed to develop a whole human being. Ancient athletes didn’t just train their muscles; they managed their Prāṇa (breath) and followed Ayurvedic practice, using herbs like Ashwagandha for endurance and recovery. The body was an instrument of learning, not just competition.

Take Mokṣa Pāṭam which the world knows as Snakes and Ladders. The original was a moral map: every rope represented a virtue, every snake a vice a teaching tool for karma and liberation. British colonists took it to England, renamed the ropes “ladders,” stripped the philosophy, and sold it back to the world as a children’s pastime. The modern version has been hollowed out. The traditional one has not.

Mallakhambh: From Battlefield to World Stage

If one sport embodies the spirit of Indian physical culture most dramatically, it is Mallakhambh aerial yoga, martial arts, and gymnastics performed on a vertical wooden pole. Its first written record appears in the 1135 AD text Manasollasa, documenting it as military conditioning. In the 17th century, Balambhatta Dada Deodhar integrated it into the Maratha army’s training to build core strength against colonial forces.

That martial legacy is now a global phenomenon. The first Mallakhambh World Championship was held in Mumbai in 2019, with participants from over a dozen countries. What began as a soldier’s morning drill is today studied by sports scientists for its extraordinary demands on grip strength, spinal flexibility, and breath control qualities no gym machine replicates.

Why “Gamer Logic” Fails in the Village

Researchers from Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University studying digital game design found that Western videogames often fail to resonate with children raised on Bhāratīya Khel. The reason is a fundamental difference in mechanical logic.

Western games rely on complex button-sequence combos and resource accumulation. Traditional Indian games are built on what researchers call “Atomic Action” a binary success-or-failure state that mirrors Dharma: an action is either right and successful, or it is not. No health bars to buffer failure. No power-ups to rescue a bad decision. The village game demands full presence, full accountability and for that reason, it is intensely clarifying in ways digital play rarely is.

The Current Reality: Loss and Revival

The honest picture is one of both erosion and momentum. Urbanisation and screen dominance have pushed many of these games to near-invisibility in cities. The institutional infrastructure coaches, standardised rules, funding extended generously to cricket was never offered to indigenous games.

But the tide is shifting. The Pro Kabaddi League (2014) proved what professionalization could do: by 2017, Kabaddi had become the most-watched non-cricketing sport in India, generating significant employment in coaching, broadcasting, and management. Punjab’s Qila Raipur “Rural Olympics” has turned local traditional sport into an annual festival that draws international visitors. At the policy level, the IKS Division of the Ministry of Education (launched July 2022) is driving the integration of 75 Bharatiya games into school curricula under NEP 2020 mirroring how Japan globalised Judo and Korea standardised Taekwondo into Olympic sports.

What Gets Built in the Process

Across all these games physical or strategic, simple or demanding certain qualities emerge consistently: the habit of looking before acting; the ability to sit with frustration without giving up; the capacity to hold a goal across many setbacks. These were not incidental benefits. In most cases, they were the entire point.

India’s traditional games are a portable curriculum, one that travels in a cotton sack, needs no electricity, and has been field-tested across generations. The question is not whether they work. The question is whether we are willing to look closely enough at what we’ve always had and whether we’ll still have it to pass on.

That question surfaced quietly almost unexpectedly during a workshop I attended recently on Anubhūti Tantram, facilitated by Sai Susarla ji of the Siddhānta Knowledge Foundation. I walked in expecting a session on Indian philosophy. I walked out with a richer, more layered understanding of what it means to be human and a few pointed questions about how I had been thinking about growth, wellbeing, and healing all along.

This piece is my attempt to share what I learned, why I think it matters deeply across professions, and why I believe more people need to learn about this framework.

A Framework That Places Western Psychology Inside a Larger Story

Most of us encounter psychology as something Western - Freud, Jung, CBT, attachment theory. These are powerful frameworks. But Anubhūti Tantram opens with this claim: Western psychology, for all its richness, is addressing only a portion of the human experience. It is, to use the framework’s own language, a chapter within a much larger book.

Anubhuti Tantram which translates loosely as ‘the system of lived experience’, is an integrated framework of psychology rooted in Indian knowledge systems. It draws from Vedanta, Sankhya, Tantra, and other Darshanas, weaving them into a coherent, practicable model of the human being. Its ambition is not to replace Western psychology but to provide the larger canvas within which all psychological frameworks find their natural place.

This reframing alone was striking. When we place Maslow’s hierarchy alongside Vedantic ideas about the self, or map CBT’s cognitive restructuring to what Anubhuti Tantram calls Jnana Shakti, things start to look surprisingly coherent and the gaps in each tradition become visible too.

The Human Being as a Layered Architecture

The Five Kośas — Simply Put

• Ānnamaya Kośa — the physical body. Static form. It cannot sustain itself independently. It depends on the layers above it.

• Prāṇamaya Kośa — the energy body. The life force that enables healing, repair, and vitality. Without it, the body ceases to live. This is what prānic healers and aura practitioners work with.

• Manomaya Kośa — the mind-self. Crucially, this is not just my individual mind but the layer through which I identify with others — with a family, a community, a nation. When you grieve for a cricket team’s loss or feel pride for your city, that is the Manomaya Kośa at work. There are 2 aspects here.

  • Mati refers to an individual’s capacity for rational thinking and discernment. It is the layer through which a person forms opinions and arrives at what they believe to be true. However, this understanding is subjective as it reflects personal perception and reasoning, and may not necessarily align with a deeper or universal truth.

  • Samhati, on the other hand, represents the sense of collective identity. At this level, an individual does not experience themselves as separate, but as interconnected with others. The joys and sorrows of others are felt as one’s own, as if one is living and experiencing life through multiple bodies. It reflects an expansion of the self beyond individuality into shared existence.

  • Sai Susarla ji shared a scene from the film Dhurandhar to explain manomaya samhati. In it, Hamza tries to save Raḥmān Dākait’s son. When Raḥmān offers him money in gratitude, Hamza refuses because, to him, Raḥmān is family. They belong to the same community, Baloch. Helping him was not an act of service to a stranger; it was an act of self-care extended outward.

• Vijñānamaya Kośa — higher discernment. The layer aligned with truth beyond personal opinion. It does not need to be taught what is right, it knows. It feels a kind of joy when Dharma prevails and a quiet discomfort when it does not.

• Ānandamaya Kośa — the witness-self. The layer that experiences everything, dharma and adharma alike with equanimity, the way one watches a great film with full engagement yet without being destroyed by it.

From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

Three Types of Hurdles (Avarodha)

• External factors and Karma: Situations, environments, or inherited conditions, what Anubhūti Tantram calls Sañcita Karma is that which shapes the ground a person stands on.

• Saṃskāra: The deep grooves of memory and past impressions stored in Citta. These are not conscious thoughts but habitual patterns of response. They fire before reason gets a chance.

• Low Śakti: The framework identifies three forms of power (Śakti) whose depletion blocks movement. Icchā Śakti (will), Jñāna Śakti (knowledge and clarity), and Kriyā Śakti (the capacity to act). Saisusarlaji offered a simple example: wanting to run a marathon, watching hours of running videos, but never lacing up the shoes. That is low Kriyā Śakti.

What I found profound here is how this model avoids the blame spiral. It does not say ‘you are stuck because you lack willpower’ or ‘you are damaged by your past.’ It says: there are identifiable obstructions, and there are identifiable remedies. The clinical clarity is compassionate.

The Algorithm for Healing: Cikitsā

Three Types of Effort

• Passive Effort: When a person is in a very low state (what the framework grades as −2 or −1 on an Anubhūti scale), they cannot self-mobilize. External support whether medical, environmental, or relational is needed first.

• Active Effort: When the person is willing and present, they can engage through knowledge, reflection, and rational restructuring. This is closest to what counseling and CBT offer.

• Indirect Effort: When someone is at −3 — the deepest state of distress, direct engagement often worsens things. Indirect intervention is required: art, nature, ritual, community, the non-verbal.

Three Strategies

• Overcome — directly address and remove the obstacle.

• Divert — redirect energy toward an alternative path.

• Transcend — move to a higher level of experience altogether. This, Sai Susarla ji noted, is the unique contribution of Indic psychology. It is the difference between solving a problem and outgrowing it.

This three-fold strategy framework resonated strongly as someone who works with organizations. Many corporate interventions are stuck in ‘Overcome’ mode, solving the present problem when the deeper need is often Transcendence: shifting the frame from which people relate to their work, to each other, and to purpose.

What This Means Across Professions

In Education

A student struggling in school is not simply “unmotivated.” They may have strong Saṃskāras from past failure (Citta), low Icchā Śakti from environments that never kindled genuine interest, or Jñāna blocks from poor conceptual foundations. Anubhūti Tantram gives educators a map that goes far beyond behavior management and into the question of what layer of the student’s experience needs attention.

In Organizational Development

Sai Susarla ji described four progressive states: self-serving, happy, conscious, and dhārmic as markers of how an organization functions and grows over time. This framework not only helps evaluate where an organization currently stands, but also provides a pathway for its evolution.

He also pointed out that when workplaces become hyper-competitive and dehumanizing, it is often because the Prāṇamaya Kośa driven by self-preservation and dominance is in control. The solution, therefore, is not limited to superficial interventions like team-building exercises. It lies in awakening the Manomaya Kośa through genuine experiences of collective joy fostering a sense of community, belonging, and shared purpose.

In Mental Health and Counseling

The framework’s graded Anubhuti scale ranging from -3 (suicidal) to +3 (ecstatic), provides a practical diagnostic tool that can help practitioners choose the right type and level of intervention. It also reminds us that the goal of therapy is not just to return a person to baseline but to support genuine flourishing.

A Closing Reflection

I began this piece with a question: what if the map you have been using to understand yourself is incomplete?

Here is what I have been sitting with since the workshop: the question is not really about the map. It is about the territory. If we accept that a human being is simultaneously physical, energetic, social, discerning, and capable of pure witnessing joy, then most of our institutions, from hospitals to schools to workplaces, are addressing people without understanding where the underlying problem is coming from.

In many modern psychological frameworks, the individual is seen as having a core identity hidden beneath layers. These layers include personality, memories, trauma, beliefs, and social roles. The task of understanding oneself then becomes a process of peeling back these layers - through introspection, therapy, or self-analysis to uncover an authentic inner core.

This idea is deeply rooted in Western thought. Influential thinkers like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, despite their differences, both worked with models where the self is something located within the individual mind. Whether it is the unconscious, archetypes, or repressed experiences, the assumption remains similar: the truth of who you are lies somewhere inside you.

This is the onion model of the self.

But what if this is not the only way to understand human identity?

A Different Starting Point

In many Indian traditions, the self is not seen as something hidden inside an individual, waiting to be discovered. Instead, it is understood as something that is formed through relationships, practices, and participation in life.

Rather than an onion, a better metaphor here is a web.

A web does not have a single hidden core. It exists through its connections. Remove the threads, and the structure disappears. Similarly, in Indic thought, a person becomes who they are through relationships with family, teachers, community and nature.

This idea is reflected in texts like the Taittiriya Upanishad, which describes human existence through different layers of experience (pañca kośa). These are not layers hiding a private self, but dimensions through which a person participates in the world - physical, mental, and beyond.

The self is not sealed inside the body. It is woven through life.

Culture as Inner Cultivation

This difference becomes clearer when we look at everyday life.

In many Indian contexts, mental and emotional development was not treated as a separate activity. It was built into daily culture.

1. Daily Practices that Steady the Mind

Simple routines waking early, bathing, lighting a lamp, or sitting quietly were not only religious acts. They helped regulate attention and emotion.

A short moment of stillness in the morning creates a pause before the rush of the day. Over time, such practices train the mind to become calmer and more focused.

Today, we might call this “mindfulness.” Earlier, it was simply part of living.

2. Stories that Shape Thinking

Children often grew up listening to stories from the Panchatantra or the Ramayana.

These stories were not just for entertainment. They quietly shaped how one thinks about life.

A clever animal in the Panchatantra teaches strategy and patience. Characters in the Ramayana raise questions about duty, loyalty, and difficult choices.

Without formal lectures, children learned how to think about right and wrong, consequences, and relationships.

3. Community that Reduces Isolation

In many traditional settings, life was rarely lived alone.

Festivals, shared meals, and gatherings created regular moments of connection. A festival like Diwali is not just symbolic - it brings people together, renews relationships, and creates a sense of belonging.

In such environments, loneliness is not treated as an individual problem to be solved internally. It is addressed through collective participation.

4. Responsibility as a Source of Clarity

Indic traditions also emphasize dharma, the idea that each person has responsibilities within a network of relationships.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna’s crisis is not about discovering his inner self. It is about understanding his duties toward family, society, and justice.

The resolution comes not from endless introspection, but from aligning action with responsibility.

Here, clarity comes through engagement with the world, not withdrawal from it.

From Inner Analysis to Lived Formation

When we put these elements together, a different picture emerges.

In many traditional systems, the mind was not treated as a problem to be constantly analyzed. Instead, culture created a framework where:

• daily habits regulated emotions

• stories shaped moral imagination

• community provided support

• responsibilities gave meaning

Inner development was not separate from life- it was built into life itself.

This does not mean people did not struggle. But it does suggest that societies once developed ways to support the inner life through shared practices, rather than placing the entire burden on the individual.

Rethinking the Self

The contrast, then, is not just between East and West, but between two ways of understanding the human being.

In the onion model, the self is something to be uncovered within.

In the web model, the self is something that is formed through connections.

As modern life becomes more individualistic, many of the cultural structures that once supported inner balance are fading. In their absence, psychology has taken on a larger role.

This raises an important question:

When culture stops cultivating the self, does the individual have to carry that burden alone?

Between the loom and the login lies a structural shift.

As this series moves from art to careers, the question is no longer how craft expresses culture, but how craft sustains livelihood in a digital economy. Artificial Intelligence, online marketplaces, and open commerce networks are not peripheral to this story; they are reshaping it.

To understand this transition, we must move beyond the familiar binary of technology as threat or savior. Instead, we can turn to a classical Indian concept: Yukti - applied, context-sensitive intelligence.

The Yantra and the Yukti

In the Charaka Samhita, a physician does not prescribe the same remedy to every patient. Treatment depends on season, constitution, diet, and environment. This capacity to apply knowledge according to context , to synthesize multiple variables , is called Yukti.

In the Arthaśāstra, statecraft similarly depends not only on principle but on strategic adaptation to changing conditions.

Artificial Intelligence can be understood as a modern Yantra , an instrument. But every yantra requires yukti. Tools are not inherently ethical or unethical; their consequences depend on how intelligently they are applied.

For artisans, this distinction is crucial.

AI can help archive endangered motifs, translate regional product descriptions, forecast demand, or simulate design variations before production. Used with discernment, it can strengthen Śilpa , craftsmanship embedded in livelihood.

Without context, however, it can standardize aesthetics, compress prices, and priorities speed over depth.

The issue is not the existence of the instrument, but the reasoning guiding it.

Expanding Markets: Real Possibilities

Across India, digital initiatives suggest genuine opportunity.

Open commerce frameworks such as the Open Network for Digital Commerce attempt to decentralise e-commerce by allowing sellers to transact across multiple platforms without being locked into one corporate intermediary. In theory, this reduces dependency and expands visibility for small producers.

E-commerce initiatives like Amazon Karigar aim to onboard handicraft and handloom sellers, offering logistical support and access to national and global buyers.

Meanwhile, design institutions such as National Institute of Design work on digitizing craft vocabularies and integrating traditional skill with contemporary design ecosystems.

For a young block-printer in Jaipur or a brass artisan in Moradabad, digital platforms can mean something tangible: access beyond local traders, diversified buyers, and potentially better margins.

Technology, in this sense, reduces geographic confinement.

The Structural Strain

Yet expansion introduces new pressures.

Digital marketplaces operate through metrics. Visibility is shaped by algorithmic ranking , often rewarding competitive pricing, quick turnover, and visual standardization.

Consider a handwoven sari that takes weeks to complete. Online, it competes with machine-made replicas that mimic its pattern at a fraction of the price. Algorithms optimize for sales velocity, not labor intensity.

Here, craftsmanship encounters algorithmic gatekeeping.

The artisan must now manage not only material skill, but digital optimization: professional photography, keyword tagging, packaging logistics, and customer analytics. The labor expands beyond the loom or workshop.

More critically, the digital divide remains uneven. Reliable internet, English-language interfaces, digital payment literacy, and data-driven pricing strategies are not uniformly accessible. While urban designers experiment with AI-assisted pattern generation, many rural clusters struggle with basic onboarding processes.

This is not simply technological change , it is infrastructural transformation.

Applying Yukti to the Digital Era

If craft once required sensitivity to thread tension and dye absorption, today it also requires sensitivity to digital systems.

Yukti, in this context, means designing technological adoption according to lived realities.

It means:

• Training clusters before platform onboarding.

• Ensuring open networks like ONDC remain genuinely interoperable.

• Protecting regional specificity from aesthetic homogenization.

• Valuing narrative and process, not only price and speed.

Indian knowledge traditions did not reject instruments. They emphasized alignment. A loom was effective only when used with skill; a governance tool effective only when applied with discernment.

AI is another yantra - powerful, scalable, and neutral in itself. Its role in the future of craftsmanship will depend on whether it is applied with contextual intelligence.

From loom to login, the journey of craft is neither decline nor triumph. It is negotiation.

The future of sustainable livelihoods will not be determined by technology alone, but by how thoughtfully it is integrated. If guided by Yukti - reasoned, context-sensitive application , digital systems can expand markets without eroding identity, and innovation can coexist with embodied knowledge.

The question is not whether the algorithm will shape craftsmanship. It is whether craftsmanship, guided by discernment, can shape the algorithm in return.

The Vaiśeṣika school of philosophy suggests that the key to wisdom is deconstructing these labels. To understand reality, we must learn its grammar: the distinction between Dravya (Substance), Guṇa (Quality), and so on.

According to the Vaiśeṣika school,

• Substances(Dravya) are the substratum for qualities(Guṇa) to exist

• A quality(Guṇa) cannot exist without a Substance(Dravya).

• A Dravya will have at least one Guṇa

A Dravya is defined as the Asraya (the locus or shelter) for qualities to exist. Think of it as the canvas. Without the canvas, the drawing has nowhere to exist. In Vaiśeṣika, there are nine fundamental substances—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether, Time, Space, Soul, and Mind.

Every experience we have is rooted in one of these “containers.” When we say, “The water is cold,” we are identifying:

1. The Dravya: Water (the physical substance).

2. The Guṇa: Coldness (the attribute).

The logic dictates that coldness cannot float in the air independently. It requires the molecules of water to manifest.

• Redness” cannot move itself across the room; only the “Ball” (the substance) can move, carrying the redness with it.

  

• A quality cannot change itself: The “Sweetness” in an apple doesn’t decide to become sour. It is the chemical transformation of the Dravya (the apple) that alters the qualities it holds. For example, In the process of ripening of the fruit, there are roles that the five elements are playing, major roles being played by the Agni or fire.

Application of this in mental health and other life experiences -

Applying this logic to daily lives, By realizing that qualities are dependent, we gain mental clarity. Most of our suffering comes from treating a quality like Success, sadness, or Beauty as if it were a self-sustaining substance. In reality, these are just temporary attributes resting on a deeper foundation.

We also project a quality on some substances where that quality essentially cannot exist. And because of that we end up feeling sad, like thinking that my happiness lies in my car. So if my car is gone my happiness is also gone forever with the car. Understanding that the liking exists in my mind associating with a particular object or an experience and not in the object itself can help us navigate our lives better.

In Western psychology, we often identify ourselves as our emotions: “I am sad” or “I am an angry person.” Vaiśeṣika logic corrects this syntax. You are the Dravya (the conscious substance). Sadness, anger, joy, and anxiety are Guṇas (qualities) that are currently residing within you.)

When your thoughts feel “too big to handle,” the logic of Dravya (substance) suggests a physical solution. Since you feel like a finite, physical being, you should move your body into the presence of a vast Dravya, such as a massive mountain or an ancient temple. By standing before something so much larger than yourself, you naturally restore a sense of correct proportion to your worries.

This physical shift triggers a Guṇa exchange, which is like a trade of qualities between you and your surroundings. The turbulent, restless Guṇa of your anxiety is neutralized by the Sthira (immovable stability) of the landscape or the temple. Essentially, the stillness of the great substance outside of you helps quiet the “shaky” energy inside of you. Being in this moment, in front of a bigger system, feeling “small” is not a weakness, or surrendering is not a loss of power, but a mathematical relief. You are allowing a small, struggling system who is ‘overwhelmed by big thoughts’ to dissolve into a much larger, more stable one just as a single wave finds peace by realizing it is part of the ocean. By accepting this, you move from being an “individual sufferer” to a microscopic but perfectly integrated part of a macroscopic, cosmic order. And in the process, the ‘big’ problem does not remain too big anymore.

This shift from “labels” to “logic” is also transformative when applied to our well-being. And this is well applied in Ayurveda. When we start seeing a system of biological physics, we gain the ability to understand how any substance, food, medicine, or environment will affect the human body.

For instance, if we perceive an illness as “cold and stagnant,” Ayurveda doesn’t just search for a “labeled” medicine (like “cough syrup”). It is logical, It seeks a Dravya with “hot and mobile” Guṇas to counteract the imbalance suiting that person’s body. This approach moves us away from rote memorization and toward a sophisticated “input-output” model of health.

It empowers us to evaluate anything, from a new superfood to a change in climate, based on how its specific properties will mathematically alter our biological equilibrium.

There are so many examples to this in our tradition, As the climate is cold, dry Guṇas of winter, our ancestors prescribed a Dravya rich in “unctuous” (oily), “heavy,” and “heating” qualities to maintain our internal equilibrium. Whether it is the warming potency of Til-Gud - eḷḷu bella for Makara Sankranti or the nourishing, easy-to-digest stability of Pongal (Moong Dal and Rice), these are not just “festive foods” but strategic inputs designed to balance the physical system against the seasonal transition considering their qualities.

We can apply Dravya-Guṇa framework to the spaces we inhabit, the people we meet, and the time we spend. For example, when we re-read our environment, we stop seeing a room as just “depressing” and start seeing a Dravya dominated by “Cold” or “Static” qualities. By logically introducing “Warm” or “Mobile” elements, like wooden furniture or natural light, we can mathematically shift the atmosphere to support our mental well-being.

Or in our social interactions, this logic replaces judgment with a “functional grammar” of relationships. Instead of labeling a person as “toxic” or “angry,” we recognize that their current state is a Guṇa (Quality) of intensity currently residing in the Dravya (the Person). This allows us to respond logically rather than emotionally.

Another example would be, Inflation is essentially a shift in the Guṇa of currency it becomes “Light” (losing its weight/purchasing power)(Just as a light leaf is easily blown away by the wind, “Light” currency is easily blown away by rising prices.) Logic dictates that during such times, one should move their assets into “Heavy” and “Stable” things like land or gold to maintain equilibrium.

Finally, applying this logic to time allows us to harmonize our productivity with the natural flow of the day. By viewing Kāla (Time) as a substance with shifting qualities, we learn to align “Heavy” analytical tasks with the grounded energy of the morning and “Light” creative tasks with the clarity of the dawn. This shift from “What time is it?” to “What are the qualities of this moment in alignment with nature?” ensures we are always working with the current of reality rather than against it.

Whether you are looking at a salt crystal, a person, your work or your own complex mind, remember: the quality is just the guest. The substance is the home.

Sage Kaṇāda didn’t want us to just label the world; he wanted us to see it as a “Perfectly Coded System.” When we move from “labels” to “logic,” we stop reacting to the surface and start understanding the source and understand what they actually are.

These are no longer classroom questions. They are questions of public ethics and institutional design.

Reframing the Problem

Modern education suffers from a crisis of meaning. Schooling is increasingly reduced to credentialism, productivity, and employability. One proposed cure seeks moral certainty through institutional religion. Another proposes a return to civilisational depth through texts and traditions.

Uttarapakṣa accepts the diagnosis but reframes the cure. The question is not whether education needs depth. The question is how depth can be restored without ideological capture.

This requires acknowledging a difficult truth. Civilisational knowledge systems were never transmitted only through institutions. They were preserved through teachers, communities, households, and lived practice. Public education can introduce civilisational literacy and ethical inquiry, but it cannot replace the full environments in which these traditions historically lived and were experienced.

Why We Need a Public Ethic, Not a Religious Framework

A public education system cannot be built on belief. Yet it cannot survive on neutrality alone. What it requires is a shared ethical vocabulary that is non-sectarian, dialogical, and open to critique.

Here, dharma functions not as religious command but as ethical grammar. It offers language for responsibility, role, and action without demanding allegiance to a creed. When framed carefully, dharma becomes a civic resource rather than a theological claim.

At the same time, recognising dharma as civic vocabulary does not deny that for many practitioners it is also sacred, scriptural, and binding. Public institutions can acknowledge this without claiming authority over it.

From Classroom Success to System Design

The key insight is simple but often missed. What works in one classroom cannot be scaled by replication alone.

Scaling by standardisation invites capture. Scaling by authority invites resistance. The alternative is to scale principles, not prescriptions.

A dharma-centred public ethic does not mandate content. It mandates conditions for inquiry.

This also means recognising that public teaching has limits. When texts like the Bhagavad Gita are taught academically, institutions must be transparent that they are offering philosophical engagement, not complete scriptural transmission. Where students seek deeper devotional or traditional study, pathways through families, communities, and traditional teachers remain essential.

Core Principle One: Epistemic Pluralism Is Structural

Any serious educational renewal must begin by acknowledging multiple ways of knowing. Textual testimony, reasoning, lived experience, and observation all have a place. No single source can claim final authority in a plural society.

Pluralism here is not decorative. It is structural.

Pluralism also requires intellectual honesty. Presenting a text only in softened or selective form risks creating partial understanding. Responsible teaching requires presenting the core philosophical claims of traditions clearly, alongside the diversity of interpretations that have historically existed within them.

Core Principle Two: Decentralise Authority, Localise Meaning

Centralised moral curricula invite politicisation. A dharma-centred approach therefore emphasises decentralisation.

Local institutions should have the autonomy to design modules suited to their social and cultural context, while adhering to national standards of academic rigour and plural safeguards. School-level committees can include teachers, parents, scholars, and community representatives.

Decentralisation does not weaken education. It protects relevance and reduces ideological capture. It also allows communities to remain active participants in knowledge transmission rather than passive recipients of state-defined culture.

Core Principle Three: Dharma as Civic Vocabulary, Not Doctrinal Enforcement

Dharma must be taught as context-sensitive and dialogical, not absolute. Concepts like svadharma can be explored alongside rights-based ethics, civic republicanism, and care ethics. Students learn that moral life often involves navigating competing responsibilities.

Framing dharma in this way allows public education to engage civilisational thought while leaving space for traditions to teach their full metaphysical and theological frameworks in the environments where they historically belong.

What This Looks Like Institutionally

A theory is only as good as its design.

Curriculum design should place civilisational texts within elective modules on ethics, comparative philosophy, or life skills. Learning outcomes must be analytical and reflective, never devotional. Multiple interpretations and translations should be made visible.

Teacher preparation is crucial. Educators need Continuous Professional Development programmes that train them in comparative philosophy, facilitation of sensitive discussions, and non-confessional pedagogy. Teachers are not transmitters of belief. They are facilitators of inquiry.

Assessment practices must reward reasoning, dialogue, and reflection. Students should be evaluated on how well they articulate ethical tensions, compare frameworks, and justify decisions. Belief or agreement should never be assessed.

Institutional transparency is equally important. Schools must clearly communicate the academic nature of such modules and provide opt-out pathways where necessary. Where possible, schools should also provide information about community or traditional learning opportunities for families who seek them.

Governance, Policy, and Trust

Scaling such a model requires trust, and trust requires transparency.

Governments can support this framework through:

• National guidelines mandating comparative pedagogy

• Funding for teacher Continuous Professional Development

• Grants for locally designed curricular pilots

• Public reporting on safeguards and opt-out mechanisms

• Independent review bodies to uphold pluralism

Policy should enable experimentation, not enforce uniformity.

What Education Gains From This Model

When these elements align, education regains moral seriousness without becoming confessional. Students learn how to think when answers are unclear, how to engage disagreement without hostility, and how to act responsibly in conditions of uncertainty.

This is not cultural revivalism.
It is ethical capacity-building.
