Long time no see!

I’d like to share a thought from my recent notes.

東洋哲学や禅の言葉に「指月の例え（月を指す指）」というものがあります。

「言葉や教え（手段）にとらわれて、その本質（目的）を見失ってはならない」という戒めを込めた有名な寓話だそうです。

In Eastern philosophy and Zen, there is a famous concept known as "The Parable of Pointing at the Moon" (or "the finger pointing at the moon").

It is said to be a well-known allegory meant to remind us: "Do not get so caught up in the words or teachings (the means) that you lose sight of their true essence (the goal)."

ある人が、夜空に浮かぶ美しい「月」の場所を教えてあげようとして、指をさしました。 しかし、それを見た人は月を見ようとはせず、指されている「指」ばかりをじっと見つめていました。

指をさした人は言いました。

「私は月を見せようとして指をさしているのだ。指そのものは月ではない。指ばかりを見ていては、いつまで経っても本物の月を見ることはできないぞ」

The story goes like this:

A person pointed their finger toward the sky to show someone where the beautiful moon was shining in the night sky. However, the person looking didn’t try to look at the moon—instead, they just stared intently at the pointing finger.

The person pointing said:

“I am pointing my finger so that you can see the moon. The finger itself is not the moon. If you only look at the finger, you will never see the real moon.”

絵を描くことに置き換えるなら、

「指」は絵の描き方や技術、理論、美術の歴史に沿った様式。

「月」はその絵が表現している作者の意図、込められているメッセージ、世界観、などですかね。

If we translate this to painting and drawing:

The “finger” would be techniques, drawing methods, theory, or styles defined by art history.

The “moon,” on the other hand, would be the artist’s intent, the message embedded in the piece, or their worldview.

風景や人物スケッチなどにしても、上手に描こうとすることや本物に似せること以上に、その風景や対象について自分が何を感じ、表現したいのか。大切なのは「月」を絵に込めることなのだと、改めて思いました。

……とはいえ、絵を見た人がどんな月を受け取るかは、その人次第。 同じ月を見ているとは限らないですね、、、。

Whether it’s a landscape or a figure sketch, what matters even more than drawing skillfully or making it look realistic is what you feel about that scene or subject, and what you want to express. It reminded me once again that the most important thing is putting that “moon” into the artwork.

...That being said, what kind of “moon” the viewer receives ultimately depends on the individual. They might not necessarily be looking at the same moon, though...

しかし、いざ絵の前に立つと、あまり楽しくない。 世間の人たちが言うように、絵を見て胸が熱くなったり、涙を流すほどの感動を覚えたりすることが、私にはまずないのだ。

お目当ての画家の展示なら、行く前はそれなりにワクワクする。だけど、いざその1枚の前にたどり着くと、大抵は混雑していてイライラする。そして前の人の肩越しに名画をチラリと覗き込む程度で、先を急いでしまう。

ただ遠くから作品を崇めるだけの場所。そこでは、私たちは「受け身の観客」。美術館の完璧な美しさと、ただ眺めることしかできないもどかしさ。そのせいか私はどこか退屈な気分になってしまうのだ。

I love the elegant atmosphere of art museums. The moment you step inside, you are enveloped in a stillness completely cut off from the hustle and bustle of daily life, making you feel a bit like nobility. Drawn to that unique vibe, I find myself visiting every now and then.

However, once I’m actually standing in front of a painting, I don’t enjoy it all that much. Unlike what people often say, I almost never experience that deep, moving sensation that makes my chest tighten or brings tears to my eyes.

If it’s an exhibition of an artist I like, I do feel a certain level of excitement before going. But when I finally reach that one specific painting, I usually just end up frustrated by the crowd. I catch a quick glimpse of the masterpiece over someone’s shoulder and rush along.

It feels like a place where you merely worship the art from a distance. There, we are nothing but “passive spectators.” Perhaps it’s the gap between the museum’s flawless beauty and the frustration of only being able to stare that leaves me feeling somewhat bored.

映画やアニメ、漫画を見ているときは、ストーリーにどっぷり浸かって、ボロボロと感動の涙を流すことがしばしばある。なのに、どうして美術館の絵の前では、私の目頭は熱くならないのか、、、、。

その理由を最近考えてみた。 私は絵を見るとき、ただ「鑑賞」しているわけではないのだ。無意識のうちに、私の目はキャンバスの筆使いを追い、構図を分析し、色使いを確かめている。そして、頭の中でその絵を「模写」している。

「このタッチは、どうやって描いたんだろう」「この色は、何を重ねたら出せるのか」。 その技術をなんとか自分のものにして、あとで自分の絵に活かそうと、脳裏で何となく手を動かしている。

映画や漫画を観るとき、私は純粋に「感動」をもらいにいっている。けれど絵の前に立つとき、私の心は職人のそれだ。涙を流して感動する代わりに、私の知性とクリエイティビティが、勝手に活動しているのだ。

When I watch movies or anime, or read manga, I often get so deeply immersed in the story that I cry my eyes out. So why is it that my eyes never well up with tears in front of a painting at a museum?

I recently thought about the reason why. When I look at a painting, I’m not just “appreciating” it. Unconsciously, my eyes track the brushstrokes on the canvas, analyze the composition, and examine the color palette. In my mind, I am “copying” the painting.

“How did they achieve this texture with that stroke?” “What colors did they layer to get this specific shade?” My mind is subtly mimicking the hand movements, trying to grasp the technique and apply it to my own work later.

When I watch a movie or read manga, I go purely to be moved. But when I stand before a painting, I have the mindset of a craftsman. Instead of shedding tears of emotion, my intellect and creativity are actively working on their own.

やはり私は、絵を見るよりも描く方がずっと好きなのだと思う。

美術館で絵を見ることも、映画館でスクリーンを見つめることも、私にとっては物語をただ消費するためではない。それらを自分の中に一回ぎゅっと吸収して、今度は自分の「手」を使って新しい形にして外に出す。そこまでやって初めて、私の中でその作品や体験が「完成」するのだと思う。

ただ「見る」だけ、「読む」だけでは、どこか未完成なままで終わってしまう。頭で考えるだけでなく、実際に自分の身体（手）を動かして、紙の上に最初の一線を引くこと。この能動的なアウトプットにこそ、私の本当の幸福が詰まっているのだと思う。

「ただの観客」のままでいるのではなく、私の手から生まれる小さな実践、「身体的実践」の中にこそ、私だけの本物の喜びがある。ちなみに今日私は新しい色ペンを買った。

In the end, I suppose I just love drawing much more than looking at paintings.

For me, looking at art in a museum or staring at a movie screen isn’t just about consuming a story. I need to absorb it deeply inside myself, and then use my own “hands” to reshape it and put it out into the world. Only when I go that far does the artwork or experience truly feel “complete” to me.

Just “watching” or “reading” leaves things feeling somewhat unfinished. It’s not just about thinking; it’s about actually moving my body (my hands) and drawing that very first line on paper. I believe my true happiness lies within this active form of output.

Rather than remaining a “mere spectator,” my genuine joy exists within the small, practical acts born from my own hands—a “physical practice.”

By the way, I bought a new set of colored pens today.

I find the following artwork truly captivating. The main character, a young girl, wears a subtle expression—she seems to be smiling, yet at the same time, she looks sad. The clouds in the background are beautiful, but they also have dark, somber undertones; it isn’t necessarily the kind of bright, energetic piece that fills you with raw power. Yet, it is deeply emotional and speaks directly to the heart. There is also a short sentence written in small text in the top right corner, which gives me the sense that she is determined to move forward.

この絵は実は私が数年前にiPadで描いたものだが、たまに「これは本当に自分が描いたのだろうか？」などと思う。

In truth, this is a piece I drew on my iPad a few years ago. But sometimes, I catch myself thinking, “Did I really draw this?”

実際NFT化もされており、来歴も明確で、私が描いたものなのだが、今同じ絵を描けと言われてもできないかもしれない。SNSのXの固定ポストにこの絵を掲載しているので、たまに固定ポストに「いいね」されると、歯がゆい。過去の自分はよく描けたものだと感心する。

It has actually been minted as an NFT, so its provenance is clear, and it is undeniably my work. However, if you asked me to draw the exact same picture today, I might not be able to do it. Since I have pinned this artwork to my X (formerly Twitter) profile, I feel a strange sense of frustration whenever someone gives it a "like." I can't help but admire my past self, thinking about how well I managed to draw it back then.

さてこの「本当に自分が描いたのか信じられない」という感覚は何だろう？　と思った。

This got me wondering: what exactly is this feeling of disbelief that I was the one who created it?

自分の脳みそとは別に手が勝手に動いて描いたのか、霊か何かが自分に憑依して描いたのか、何しろ今の自分とは「違う自分」が描いたように思う。

この数年で経験したことや読んだ本、出会った人などの情報の蓄積で自分は常に変化しており、周りの環境も変わっているので、当時の自分と今の自分は明らかに異なる。だから違う人が描いたというのはあながち間違いではない。

It feels as though my hand moved entirely on its own, independent of my brain, or as if I was possessed by a spirit or something. Whatever the case, it truly feels as though a "different version of me" painted it. Over the last few years, I have constantly changed through the accumulation of new experiences, books I’ve read, and people I’ve met. My environment has shifted too. The person I was then is clearly different from the person I am now. Therefore, saying it was painted by a "different person" isn't entirely wrong.

そもそも誰が描いたかはあまり重要なことではないのかもしれない。

Perhaps, in the grand scheme of things, who created it doesn't matter all that much anyway.

本で読んだところによると、作品に制作者の名前（署名）が書かれたのはそれほど古くなく、ジオットが最初だったと言われているそうだが、彼の工房のことを表していた可能性もあるらしく、明らかに意識的に書かれたのはアルブレヒト・デューラーだそう。それまでは作者という概念がなかった。

According to a book I read, the practice of an artist signing their own work isn't actually that old. It is said that Giotto was the first to do so, though it may have simply represented his workshop. The first artist to clearly and consciously sign his work was apparently Albrecht Dürer. Before that era, the very concept of an "author" or "creator" didn't really exist.

例えばAIで生成された絵の場合は作者は誰か？　AIにプロンプトで指示した人が作者だろうか？　プロンプトが同じであれば数年経っても同じものが出力されるだろうか？　AIももちろん進化するので、やはり今回の私の場合と同じく、数年後は同じプロンプトでも全く違う絵を出力するかもしれない。つまり作者は人間でもAIでもどちらにしろ、その時その場所で描かれたものはその後は同じ作者からは出力されない。作者が誰であれ、完成した絵がそこに存在するだけである。

Take AI-generated art, for example—who is the creator there? Is it the person who prompted the AI? And if you used the exact same prompt a few years later, would it yield the same result? AI, of course, evolves. Just like in my case, a few years from now, the exact same prompt might output a completely different image. In other words, whether the creator is human or AI, once something is captured in a specific time and place, it can never be replicated by that same creator again. Regardless of who the author is, only the finished artwork remains.

そう思うと、描かれた絵は唯一無二であり（NFTならなおさら）、作者もそれが描かれた時の誰かであって、今の作者とは異なる。鑑賞者がその絵のキャプションを見て、その文字から「同じ人が描いたのだ」と思うだけである。鑑賞者が過去の作者と現在の作者を（勝手に）結びつけ、ストーリーを形成する。

Thinking about it this way, every piece of art is one-of-a-kind (even more so with NFTs), and the creator is merely whoever they were at the exact moment it was painted—not who they are today. A viewer simply looks at the caption of a painting and assumes, based on those words, that the same person made it. The viewer (on their own accord) connects the past creator with the present creator, weaving a story around them.

逆にいうと、作者は全く別の人間であっても、ストーリーで結ばれると意味が生じてくる。時が過ぎれば過ぎるほど、ストーリーは後からどんどん膨らんで、元の作者が思ってもみなかった意味を持ってくるかもしれない。

Conversely, even if the creator were a completely different person, a sense of meaning emerges once they are bound by a narrative. As time passes, that story can expand further and further, taking on meanings that the original creator could never have imagined.

いずれにしろ私は過去の私が描いたこの絵が好きだが、鑑賞者がこの絵にどんどんストーリーを付け加えていっていただけると幸いである。

Either way, I love this piece that my past self created, and I would be delighted if viewers continued to layer their own stories onto it.

まだまだ考えが中途半端であるが一旦今回はここまでとしたい。

My thoughts on this are still a bit half-baked, but I think I will leave it here for now.

When it comes to creating art, I think the desire to "paint/draw a good picture" is something every artist shares. However, it made me want to take a step back and really think about what a "good picture" actually is, and what it means to me personally.

自分なりに満足のいく絵が描けた時、「いい感じに描けたぞ」と嬉しく思うわけですが、「良い絵」とは「感じ」すなわち「主観」だと思います。人によって異なる。では私の場合、どのような「感じ」なのか。

When I manage to draw something I'm personally satisfied with, I feel happy and think, "Hey, this turned out pretty good." In that sense, I believe a "good picture" is all about a certain "feeling" or "vibe"—in other words, it's completely subjective. It varies from person to person. So, what exactly does that "feeling" mean in my case?

最近私はペンのみでスケッチしており、色はあまり塗らず短時間（数分〜数十分）で描いているスタイルですが、どのような時に「良い絵が描けた」と思うか、私がそう思った時のことを思い出してみたいと思います。

Lately, my style consists of sketching with just a pen, rarely adding color, and finishing each piece in a short amount of time (anywhere from a few minutes to a few dozen minutes). Looking back at the moments I felt this way, here is when I typically think, "I drew a good picture":

1. 女性をかわいく描けた時。When I manage to draw a woman beautifully or cutely.

   「かわいい」の感覚は人や国にもよると思いますが、エレガントな雰囲気で女性を描けた時に気分が良くなります。例えば以下とか、綺麗なお姉さんです。

   The perception of “cute” probably depends on the person or the country, but I always feel great when I can capture a woman with an elegant atmosphere. For example, the one below—she is a beautiful lady.

   

   

2. 雰囲気のある絵を描けた時。When I capture a distinct mood or atmosphere.

   私は雲を描くのが好きですが、雲でその絵の主人公であるキャラクターの雰囲気を表現したりします。切ないような温かいようなそういう雰囲気が私は好きです。例えば以下とか。

   I love drawing clouds, and I often use them to express the mood of the character who is the protagonist of the piece. I love atmospheres that feel somewhat poignant yet warm. Take this one, for example.

   

3. 思いがけないアイデアが降りてきて斬新な絵を描けた時。When an unexpected idea strikes and I create something unconventional.

   毎年10月の1ヶ月間、「Inktober」というイベントに参加しています。毎日「お題」が与えられ、それに沿った絵を描いてSNSに投稿するというものです。例えば以下は、「Starfish」というお題で描いたものですが、面白くできました。

   Every year, I participate in an event called "Inktober" for the entire month of October. We are given a daily prompt, and we draw a picture based on it to post on social media. For instance, the one below was drawn for the prompt "Starfish," and I think it turned out quite interesting.

   

4. うまくデフォルメできた時。When I successfully stylize or simplify an image.

   極力描きすぎないように、形を単純化したいと思っていますがなかなかうまくいきませんが、たまにシンプルな線で描けることもありました。例えば以下とか。

   I try my best not to overdraw and aim to simplify shapes, which is usually quite difficult for me. But occasionally, I manage to pull it off with clean, simple lines. Like this one, for example.

   

5. 自分が好きなものを描いた時。When I draw the things I love.

   そもそも、自分が好きなものであれば、なんでも良い絵なのかもしれません。例えば以下は飼っている柴犬です。

   Come to think of it, as long as it's something I love, maybe anything can be a good picture. For example, here is my pet Shiba-Inu.

   

以上を書き出してみました。（他にもあるかもしれません）

これらのどれか一つが達成されれば、それは「良い絵」だと私は（今のところ）思います。

These are the points I’ve jotted down for now (though there might be others). As long as I can achieve even one of these, I consider it a "good picture" (at least for now).

ところで美術館に飾られている名画と呼ばれる絵は、「良い絵」なのかどうか、、、。

そもそも時代背景によると思うので、上記の私が考える定義には当てはまらない気がします。構図とか色とか筆致とか、その時代ごとの特色や流れがあり、デッサンが重視された流れもあれば、色や表現が重視された流れもあり、コンセプトが重視された流れもあると思われます。そのためその時代、その画家たちにとっては「良い絵」だったのだと思います。

By the way, it makes me wonder whether the famous masterpieces hanging in museums are considered "good pictures" in the same way... I feel like those depend heavily on historical context, so they don’t quite fit into my definition above. Elements like composition, color, and brushwork reflect the unique characteristics and trends of each era. There were periods that emphasized drafting skills, eras focused on color and expression, and movements centered around concepts. Therefore, I believe they were "good pictures" for that specific era and for those particular artists.

私は多分、美術館に飾られる絵を目指しているのではない気がします。美術史の一部となるような絵はそもそも目指して制作できるようなものではないかもしれませんが、少なくとも私は今のところそこにあまり魅力を感じていません、、。

I don't think I am aiming to create the kind of art that gets hung in museums. Perhaps art that becomes a part of art history isn't something you can intentionally set out to make anyway, but at the very least, I don't find much appeal in that direction right now.

私の思う「良い絵」は主観的で、結局のところ、まずは絵は自分のために描くものだと思います。それが他の人の心に残ったり、美術館に飾られたりしたとしても、たまたまの結果であって、それは目指してもうまく行くかはわからない。

To me, a "good picture" is subjective, and at the end of the day, I believe art is something you create for yourself first and foremost. Even if a piece happens to resonate with someone else or end up in a museum, that’s just a byproduct. Trying to aim for that doesn't guarantee success.

描いた絵が「良い」かどうかは描いた自分だけが評価できることのような気がします。というか、「良いとは何か」については哲学の領域かもしれません。もう少し哲学を勉強したいと思います、、、。

It feels like whether a drawing is "good" or not is something only the artist who created it can judge. Then again, exploring "what goodness truly is" might belong to the realm of philosophy. I think I’d like to study a bit more philosophy...

The other day, as usual, I was sketching my dog sleeping on the sofa, but for some reason, I just couldn't get it right that time. Anyone who draws knows that we all have our "off days." It made me reflect on what this "failure" really meant.

描いた時の詳細を振り返るとこのような流れでした。

まず犬の背中の丸まっている部分から描き始め、全体の大きさを意識しながら、手足を描いて、その後、頭を描く。（特に毎回描く順番や段取りは決めていないのですが、この時は自然とそうした。）

Looking back at the details of how I drew it, the process went something like this: First, I started with the curled curve of the dog’s back. Keeping the overall size in mind, I added the paws, and finally, the head. (I don't usually have a set order or routine for drawing, but this time it just happened naturally.)

そしていつも気づくのは描いた後なのですが、どうも頭と体の比率がおかしい。頭が小さくなってしまいました。そのため本来あるべき大きさの頭の輪郭を後から重ねて描きましたが、最初に描いた頭の輪郭は消せないので、このスケッチは私にとって「失敗した」と判定されました。

As is always the case, it was only after finishing that I noticed something was off: the proportion between the head and the body was wrong. The head had turned out too small. To fix it, I drew the outline of the head in its proper size over the original one. However, since the first outline couldn't be erased, this sketch was deemed a "failure" in my eyes.

その後ふと思い出しました。

「そういえば私、ここ最近『もっとデフォルメした絵を描きたい』って考えていなかったっけ？」と。

目の前の対象物をそのまま写真のように正確に写し取っただけでは面白くないので、アニメや漫画のようにあえて形を崩す（デフォルメする）ことで、その対象物が持つ本当の特徴や愛らしさを強調したい――そんな思いが、自分の中にあったはずでした。　

Then, it suddenly occurred to me. "Come to think of it, haven't I been wanting to draw in a more stylized, distorted way lately?" Merely copying the subject in front of me with photographic accuracy feels uninspiring. Instead, by intentionally distorting the form—much like in anime or manga—I wanted to emphasize the true essence and loveliness of the subject. That desire was supposed to be lingering inside me.

そう考えると、不思議な問いが湧いてきます。

「ということは、この崩れてしまった形は、私が求めていた『デフォルメ』された状態と言えなくもないのではないか、、、、？」

ここに、突き当たった矛盾があります。「デフォルメしたい」という自由への憧れと、「形を正確に描きたい」という規律への執着。この二つは、両立するでしょうか。

Thinking about it this way brought up a curious question: "Does that mean this distorted form could actually be the very 'stylization' I was looking for...?" Here lies the contradiction I ran into: a longing for freedom through stylization, versus an obsession with discipline through accurate forms. Can these two ever coexist?

ここで思い出したのは、ピカソの存在でした。 ピカソといえば、あの奇妙な「キュビズム」の絵画で有名ですが、実は彼は少年時代から、恐ろしいほど正確な写実画を描ける圧倒的な技術を持っていました。確固たる「正しさ」を完璧に身につけた上で、彼はあえてそれを解体し、形を崩していったのです。この順序から言えば、「まずは正確に描けること」が足場としてあって、その先ではじめて「崩す」という表現が許されることになります。

This reminded me of Picasso. While he is famous for his peculiar Cubist paintings, he actually possessed an overwhelming technique for frighteningly accurate realism since his childhood. Only after completely mastering a solid foundation of "correctness" did he deliberately deconstruct it and distort the forms. Following this sequence, being able to draw accurately comes first as a foothold, and only beyond that is the expression of "distortion" permitted.

もうひとつ、美術史の有名な話も思い出しました。十九世記のフランスで火花を散らした、画家アングルとドラクロワの論争です。 冷徹なまでに「正確な線」を重んじた新古典主義のアングルと、形を超えた「豊かな色彩と情熱」を重んじたロマン主義のドラクロワ。ここで気づくことは、「正確な形」を選ぶか、それとも「デフォルメされた自由」を選ぶかというのは、どちらが正しいという問題ではなく、単なる「スタイルの選択」なのかもしれない、と。

I also recalled another famous story from art history: the debate that sparked between the painters Ingres and Delacroix in 19th-century France. Ingres, the Neoclassicist, valued "precise lines" with cold discipline, while Delacroix, the Romantic, prioritized "rich color and passion" that transcended mere form. This made me realize that choosing between "accurate form" and "stylized freedom" might not be a matter of right or wrong, but simply a "choice of style."

では今回の私の絵はどちらのスタイルだったのか。そもそも私はどちらを目指して描いているのかという話になります。「見たものをそのまま描いても面白くない」という私の直感に従えば、私の心はすでにデフォルメの側へ、傾いていたはずです。だとすれば、あの時たまたま頭が小さくなったのは、失敗などではなく、私の内なる欲求が引き起こした「無意識のデフォルメ」だったのかもしれない。

So, which style did my drawing belong to? For that matter, which one am I aiming for when I draw? If I follow my intuition that "copying what I see is boring," my heart must have already been leaning toward stylization. If so, that head turning out small wasn’t a failure at all; it might have been an "unconscious distortion" triggered by my inner desire.

私は先日、犬の「背中のライン」から描き始めました。つまり、私が最初に強調したかったエッセンスは背中にあったのです。そう割り切ってしまえば、辻褄を合わせるために小さくなった頭部も、「あえてそうした表現なのだ」と肯定してあげることもできます。

大切なのは表面的な形の正確さではなく、そこから抽出されたエッセンスのはずだからです。　

At that moment, I started drawing from the "line of the dog's back." In other words, the essence I wanted to emphasize first was in the back. If I look at it that way, I can accept the smaller head—which resulted from trying to balance the rest—as an intentional form of expression. After all, what truly matters shouldn't be the superficial accuracy of the shape, but the essence extracted from it.

しかし、またひっくり返しますが、ピカソの例が示しているように、基準となる「正しい線」を論理的に理解していなければ、そこから美しく逸脱すること（崩すこと）など不可能なはずです。基礎から逃れるためには、まずその基礎を知らねばなりません。やはり、正確に描く力は不可欠なのです。

And yet, to flip the argument once more, as Picasso’s example shows, it should be impossible to beautifully deviate from (or distort) a standard without logically understanding the "correct line" first. To break away from the basics, you must first know them. Ultimately, the ability to draw accurately remains indispensable.

結局のところ、表現することの心地よさとは、この二つの極の間を、振り子のようにずっと行き来し続けることそのものなのかもしれません。 それはまるで、息を深く吸っては吐き出す、呼吸の循環にも似ています。形を捉えようとする緊張と、そこから自由になろうとする解放。 どちらか一方に留まることはできなさそうです。

In the end, perhaps the comfort of expression lies in the very act of swinging back and forth between these two extremes, like a pendulum. It is much like the cycle of breathing—inhaling deeply and then exhaling. The tension of trying to capture the form, and the liberation of trying to break free from it. It seems impossible to stay on just one side.

皆さんは、何かを描くとき、あるいは日々の暮らしの中で、「正しさ」と「崩し」のどちらに心地よさを感じるでしょうか、、、？

When you draw something, or even in your daily life, which do you find more comfortable: "precision" or "distortion"...?

it was only at the beginning of this year (2026) that I started sketching on my train commutes. While I no longer struggle with sketching outside the house, it actually took me several months before I could even begin. I wanted to think about why this was the case.

まずは経緯ですが、数年間、私は家でしか絵を描いたことがありませんでした。しかしある時、とある本（ジェスチャードローイング、カフェスケッチの本）をきっかけにそろそろ外でスケッチをしてみようと思いました。それで昨年（2025年）の春、スケッチブックを持って「よし描くぞ」と思って外に出たのですが、どうも描きたい対象がない、というか印象に残るものがなく、ただ散歩するだけで絵を描けずに帰ってきてしまいました。その後も何となく、外に出ても何を描いたら良いか、何を描きたいのかわからず、描けないままでした。

First, a bit of background. For several years, I had only ever drawn at home. However, prompted by a certain book (one about gesture drawing and cafe sketching), I felt it was finally time to try sketching outdoors. So, in the spring of last year (2025), I headed out with my sketchbook, thinking, “Alright, let’s draw!” But somehow, I couldn’t find anything I wanted to draw—or rather, nothing left an impression on me. I ended up just taking a walk and returning home without having drawn anything. Even after that, whenever I went outside, I vaguely felt lost about what I should draw or what I wanted to draw, and I remained unable to sketch.

さてそれはなぜだったのか。

So, why was that?

まず「何を描くのか」、これが頭の中になかったことが原因の一つだと考えました。

First, I figured that one of the reasons was that I didn’t have a clear idea in my head of “what to draw.”

「目の前のものを何でもいいから描けば良い」と言う絵描きさんもいると思います。何らかの意図があれば、「何でも描く」のはありだと思います。今目の前にあるコーヒーの入ったコップとか、文房具とか。しかし特に意図なく目の前のものを描くのは少し違うかもしれません。興味のないものを描いても楽しくないですよね。

Some artists might say, “Just draw whatever is in front of you; it doesn’t matter what.” I think “drawing anything” works if there is some kind of intention behind it—like a coffee cup right in front of you, or some stationery. However, drawing things in front of you without any particular intent might be a bit different. After all, drawing things you aren’t interested in isn’t very fun.

では「興味のあるもの」を描けば良いということになります。さて、「興味のあるもの」とは何か、ここから自分との対話が始まることになります。自分との対話のきっかけとしては、

So, the logical conclusion is that you should draw “things you are interested in.” But then, what exactly are “things I’m interested in”? This is where the dialogue with myself begins. As a starting point for this self-dialogue, I suggest asking yourself:

「今の自分が忘れたくないこと」。

「人生の軌跡として残しておきたいこと」。

「心の引き出しにいつでも取り出せるようにしまっておきたいもの」。

“What is it that the current ‘me’ doesn’t want to forget?”

“What do I want to leave behind as a trace of my life?”

“What do I want to store in the drawers of my mind so I can pull it out at any time?”

それをきっかけに自分に問いかけてみてはどうか、と思います。今の自分が心に残しておきたいことがすなわち「興味のあるもの」であり、「描きたいもの」という解釈です。

I think it might be helpful to use these prompts to ask yourself these questions. My interpretation is that what your current self wants to keep in your heart is precisely what is “interesting to you” and, therefore, “what you want to draw.”

絵を描くと、その対象、その時の自分の感情や影響を受けていることをその絵に閉じ込めておけるのだと考えています。そして後で見返すとその時の感情などが思い出せる。それはとても愛しいことだと思いますがどうでしょう。

I believe that when you draw, you can capture the subject, your feelings at that moment, and the things influencing you, locking them all inside the drawing. Then, when you look back at it later, you can recall those emotions. I think that is a very beautiful, precious thing—don’t you agree?

私の場合は、例えば飼っている柴犬。現在11歳で、人間で言うと大体60歳ぐらい。犬の平均寿命は14歳〜15歳なので老犬です。犬との思い出を残しておきたいので、最近は犬のスケッチをしています。大抵眠っています、、、。

In my case, for example, it’s my pet Shiba Inu. She is currently 11 years old, which is about 60 in human years. Since the average lifespan of a dog is 14 to 15 years, she is a senior dog. Because I want to preserve memories of her, I’ve been sketching her lately. Though, she is usually asleep...

また「目の前のものを描く」場合だとしても、「思い出のコーヒーカップ」であれば、それは「興味のあるもの」として描くのは意味のあることだと思います。

Even when it comes to “drawing what is right in front of you,” if it is a “coffee cup filled with memories,” then drawing it as “something of interest” becomes meaningful.

絵の練習をしている場合も「今は人物を生き生きと描く練習をしたい」という「興味」があれば、その上達の軌跡を残しておくという意味で、その思い出を記録していくというのもありですね。

Even if you are practicing drawing, if you have an “interest” like “right now, I want to practice drawing people in a lively way,” it also makes sense to record those memories as a way of leaving a trace of your progress.

他には通勤中に「こんな人がいた」という人間観察の記録など。変わった体制で寝ている人や、奇抜なファッションの人、とても太った人やとても背の高い人、高級そうなメガネをかけている人、好みのタイプの異性など、心惹かれた人。また逆に何の変哲もない普通の人を描いても逆に面白いかもしれません。この時のポイントとしては、「あの時期（季節）、あの会社へ通っていてあの電車の何番の扉からよく乗っていた」というような具体的な思い出と共に描くということだと思います。

Another option is keeping a record of people-watching during your commute, like “I saw someone like this today.” It could be someone sleeping in an unusual posture, someone with eccentric fashion, an extremely large or tall person, someone wearing expensive-looking glasses, or someone who is your type—anyone who catches your eye. Conversely, drawing an utterly ordinary, plain person could also be interesting in its own way. I think the key here is to draw them alongside concrete memories, such as, “During that season, I was commuting to that company, and I used to board from that specific train door.”

このような感じで、自分の「興味」がどこにあるのかをまず意識することが外でのスケッチを楽しむ最初の一歩なのではないかと思います。

In this way, I believe that first becoming conscious of where your “interests” lie is the very first step to enjoying sketching outdoors.

ということで今では私は「何を描きたいか」を意識してからスケッチに取り掛かることになり、習慣にできたというわけです。

And that is how I now make sure to be conscious of “what I want to draw” before I start sketching, which has allowed me to make it a habit.

明日になれば違う考えになっているかもしれませんが取り敢えず今の考えを記しておきました。

I might have a different perspective tomorrow, but for now, I wanted to write down these current thoughts of mine.

Whenever I see the beautiful landscape sketches flowing through my social media feeds, I find myself picking up a brush, longing to capture the world just like that. Yet, somehow, it never quite goes as planned.

先日、近所に立つ大きなイチョウの木の見えるところで、私は一枚のスケッチを描きました。それを前にして、私はふと、これに意味はあったのだろうか、と思ってしまいました。

The other day, I sat down to sketch a large ginkgo tree in my neighborhood. Looking at the finished piece, I found myself wondering: Was there any meaning in doing this?

風景を描いていると、途中で「時間がもったいない」という感覚が芽生えてきます。少しでも速く仕上げようと、今回はペンではなく鉛筆を選びました。鉛筆のほうが、思い切って速く強い線が引ける気がしたからです。

When drawing landscapes, a feeling that I’m “wasting time” often starts to creep in. In an attempt to finish more quickly, I chose a pencil instead of a pen this time. I felt that with a pencil, I could draw bolder, faster lines with more conviction.

それなりに形にはなりました。けれど、出来上がった絵を見つめると、言いようのない虚しさが残ります。「ただ描き写しただけなら、写真で十分ではないか。わざわざ時間をかけて描く意味はどこにあるのだろう」と。

It took shape well enough. But as I stared at the result, an indescribable emptiness remained. I thought, “If I’m just copying what I see, wouldn’t a photo suffice? What is the point of spending all this time drawing?”

その空虚さの正体をぼんやり考えていくうちに、一つの答えに突き当たりました。それは、私の中に「目的」が欠落していたのではないか、という問いです。

As I pondered the source of that emptiness, I arrived at a possible answer. I began to ask myself: Was I missing a “purpose”?

目的なく手を動かすことは、単なる作業に陥りがちです。建物や対象の構造を理解したいのか、光の当たり方を捉えたいのか、あるいは自分なりの解釈を加えたいのか。次からは、そんな小さな「志」を携えて紙に向き合ってみようと思います。

Moving one’s hand without a goal often turns the act into mere labor. Do I want to understand the structure of a building? Am I trying to capture the play of light? Or do I want to add my own interpretation? Next time, I intend to face the paper with such a small “ambition” in mind.

……と、ここまで考えて、ふと別の考えも芽生えてきました。 「目的」がなく、ただ「美しい」と思ったものを描くことは、果たして無意味なことなのだろうか。

...And yet, having reached that conclusion, another thought occurred to me. Is sketching something simply because you find it “beautiful”—without any grander purpose—truly meaningless?

写真は一瞬で世界を切り取ります。対してスケッチは、対象とじっと見つめ合い、その形を自分の身体を通していく、いわば「世界との対話」そのものです。効率が支配する日常の中で、あえて非効率な時間を過ごすこと。それ自体が、一つの静かな抵抗であり、贅沢なのかもしれません。

A photograph captures the world in an instant. In contrast, sketching is an act of gazing deeply at a subject and letting its form pass through your own body—a “dialogue with the world.” In a daily life ruled by efficiency, choosing to spend time inefficiently might itself be a form of quiet resistance, a true luxury.

私が絵を描く理由の一つは、自分自身、そして見てくれる誰かの心に何らかの余韻を残したいからです。 スケッチはそのための手段。けれど、その「手段」としての時間の中にこそ、実は大切な何かが隠れているような気がします。

One reason I draw is that I want to leave a lingering resonance in my own heart and in the hearts of those who see my work. Sketching is a means to that end. However, I feel that within that time spent as a “means,” something truly precious is hidden.

イチョウの葉が風に揺れる音を思い出しながら、また次の紙を広げてみたいと思います。

Remembering the sound of ginkgo leaves rustling in the wind, I think I will open my sketchbook once again.

商業施設や駅で「いいな」と思って描き始めても、すぐに相手は立ち去ってしまいます。手元に残るのは、足元が欠けたり輪郭が途切れたりした「描きかけ」のスケッチ。以前の私はこれを「失敗」、「もっと印象を早く捉えなければならない」とがっかりしていました。

しかし、最近取り入れた「枠を足す」というテクニックで、描きかけの絵も一作の作品とすることもできると気づきました。

描ききれなかったら「枠」を足してみる

方法は簡単、人物の周りに「枠（背景の塗り）」を付けるだけです。

まずは、こちらのスケッチを見てください。

街で見かけた人たちのスケッチですが、どれも形が途中で終わっており、紙の上で浮いた未完成な印象です（実際未完成）。ここに少し筆を加えてみます。

人物の背後に、ラフな「枠」を塗るだけで、急に「意図して描かれたポートレート」のような雰囲気が出てきた気がしませんか。

「枠」がもたらす3つの効果

1. 「未完成」を「デザイン」に変える
   足元がなくても、枠があることで「あえてそこまでしか描かなかった」という表現に見せられます。

2. コントラストで人物を引き立てる
   背景に色が入ることで、人物のシルエットがパキッと浮き上がります。

3. ページ全体の統一感
   バラバラのスケッチに共通の枠を設けることで、紙面全体にまとまりが生まれます。

描き方のポイント

• 形はラフでOK： きっちり描こうとせず、人物の形に沿って適当に塗る。

• あえて全部囲まない： 頭の上や背中側だけなど、隙間を作る方が抜け感が出る。

• 輪郭を少し残す： 人物の境界線をわずかに残して塗ると、光が当たっているように見える。

おわりに

もしモデルが途中で立ち去ってしまっても、残念がる必要はありません。お気に入りの色のペンで「枠」を添えてみてください。その描きかけの線が、あなただけの特別な一枚に変わるはずです。

今日使った道具：

• PIGMAミリペン（黒　0.4ミリ）

• ZIGクリーンカラーリアルブラシ（No.075 BRICK BEIGE）

• ターレンス　アートクリエーションスケッチブック（12✖︎12cm）

みなさんは風景スケッチにどれぐらいの時間をかけているでしょうか。今まで恥ずかしくて外でスケッチなどほとんどしたことなかったのですが、試しに近所の人のいない神社の片隅で、なるべく誰にも見つからないようにスケッチしてみました、、。

風景を前にすると、つい細部まで描き込みたくなります。

このスケッチは30分〜40分ほどかかりました。

しかし描いている途中、立っているのもあって疲れてくるし、「写真でいいか」という誘惑があったり、「時間がもったいない」と思い始めてきてしまいました。

一旦描き終えたものの、後になって考えたことをメモ。

1. 現状：スケッチの途中で疲れる。時間が気になりだす。途中から適当になる。

2. 目指すべき姿：いい感じに描きたい。

3. 課題：途中で飽きずに風景を描くには

＜気づき・対策＞

風景スケッチで大切なのは リアルな再現ではなく、その場の「空気感」を伝えることではないか。

そのため、次回からは敢えて「10分」という制限を設けてやってみよう。

時間を削ることで、脳が勝手に「本当に描くべきエッセンス」を選別し始めると想定。細かな描き込みは、するとしたら、次の絵に活かすための「部分的な観察」として別でやる。

「10分で何を感じたか」を切り取る。その潔さが、絵に生命力を与えてくれる気がする。

ちなみに「空気感」をどう描くかは別の課題としよう、、、。
