WAKE FOREST “REALLY FREE MARKET” - October 3, 2026

“Take what you want, bring what you can”

• Event date: Saturday, Oct. 3rd. 10am - Noon at the Olive Branch Baptist Church parking lot and grounds

• WFI is very excited about an event we are planning for the community in the early fall: WF’s first ever “Really Free Market” event! A free market is one we share our abundance with the community. In addition to the folks bringing free items to give away (such as books, food, furniture, records, clothes, seeds, and more), many folks provide a free skill (free haircuts, bike repair, sewing) or offering to the community. Everyone is welcome and invited. Please bring a blanket or tarp to display your wares. Nothing is sold

• Do you have a skill that you would be willing to teach or do for others at the free market for 2 hours? Do you know of a business that might be willing to donate services at our event?

• We are currently trying to line up various free services such as haircuts, sewing repairs, knitting instruction, small appliance repair and the like

• Clothing donations can be dropped off in advance at 9908 Calvados Dr, WF. We will sort all clothing prior to the event

• Please send us an email with “free market” in the subject line if you have something to contribute to the community

• Voter education and voter registration will be a part of our event. Additionally, we look forward to sharing info with the community about our new referral services to free or low cost medical clinics in Durham for those in our community lacking health insurance

A fascist regime can’t rule without capitulators and enablers and some of the worst examples are currently sitting on the Supreme Court. From overturning Roe v. Wade to gutting the Voting Rights Act, the conservative majority on the Court has served as a rubber stamp for the regime’s agenda.

This week the Court paused an injunction against Trump’s executive order targeting vote by mail. To be clear, this case is not settled and this week’s ruling does not affect any voter’s ability to cast a mail ballot.* But the Court’s actions show that even when the Court is not outright ruling in the regime’s favor, they’re more than willing to help it sow chaos and confusion ahead of the November election.

MUTUAL AID

Success! Thank you to all who donated to help a family with rent.

• This week we continue to focus on assisting a family where the father and husband recently suffered two broken feet in a car accident that was not his fault.

• We have raised 1/3 of $525 (half their monthly rent) to assist them. If you are able to help with this effort by making a donation, please send it by Venmo to @Nyya-Simba or send us an email wakeforestindivisible@gmail.com if you would like to donate in another way.

• This week we seek:

  • Grocery store gift cards (ones can be purchased that exclude alcohol, tobacco and lottery ticket purchases)

  • Back to school clothing for 2 young teenage girls in one of our neediest families

    • Specifically, the girls need socks, deodorant and hair care products like hairspray; sizes L and XL yoga pants; sizes XL and 2XL stretchy workout shirts; and, sizes 9.5 and 10 shoes to go with that clothing.

    • We also seek donations of tennis shoes, in sizes 10.5 and 11 for 2 teenage boys who just started back to school and have outgrown their current shoes.

    • New or used clothing or shoe donations are welcome. Thank you!

• Congress is about to give DHS and ICE more power to spy on us with facial recognition technology and automatic license plate readers like Flock.

• The House has already passed this bill and now the Senate is trying to quietly slip it into a must-pass budget bill.

• Tell your Senators Tillis and Budd to vote NO on CORCA.

• Do not hand the Trump administration more power to abuse! This is an important issue that we need to keep our eyes on.

WAKE FOREST GOVERNANCE

FLOCK CAMERAS

All North Carolinians have a right to privacy without billion-dollar technology companies turning our movements into products for profit.

• Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras are rapidly expanding across our state, allowing law enforcement to track people’s movements in real time without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing.

• If you get pulled over for speeding, an officer may ask you where you were going. In this situation, you may decline to answer. Regardless, a police officer may use Flock to track you at anytime on any day-no warrants, no probable cause, no oversight.

  • There are dozens of examples of officer’s abusing this access to the Flock system. How does this keep us safe?

    • These cameras put a chilling effect on free speech and free association.

• We are currently planning actions to take in September re: Flock, to raise awareness among Wake Forest residents and to escalate our demands for more transparency by the WFPD in its use of Flock.

• Please consider contacting Wake Forest mayor and commissioners to let them know how you feel about Flock.

• Flock is not the only automated license plate reader that is problematic.

• Axon also provides a number of surveillance products we should be concerned about. Learn more at this upcoming virtual seminar.

• Ohio Professor with expertise in policing explains why Flock cameras are a threat to everyone:

  • “It inverts the very nature of how police are supposed to function. Under Flock, when we get into a car, we are all under investigation at all times for all crimes.”

• WIRED reconstructed the next-generation AI system part of Flock safety cameras and already in use by some police, to confirm it goes much further than tracking license plates

• Audits raise questions about who has access to Raleigh surveillance systems

• Counties whose local boards could not pass a unanimous plan must have their plans reviewed by the State Board of Elections.

A MESSAGE FROM JEN AMYX

I spoke at last night’s BOC mtg about the way that the dishonesty in the town’s press release regarding the closure of the Shady 80 trail undermined confidence in town management. While claiming that “no trespassing” signs had been repeatedly posted and vandalized, the Town acknowledged in correspondence that the Town never issued any statements regarding such alleged vandalizing, never issued any statements regarding the closure of the trails prior to June 2026, and was unable to provide any photographic evidence of the supposed “no trespassing” signs. However, the Town acknowledged placing the same town signs along the Shady 80 trails that are placed along the reservoir trails. The Town further admitted that town staff were aware that the trails were being used and were fine with that until the recent vandalism occurred. Yet, the Town has yet to acknowledge or correct the errors in its original press release or apologize for maligning the many hikers, runners and bikers who used and cared for the Shady 80 trails.

• Join the ACLU of North Carolina and the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project on August 20th from 6:15-7:30 PM ET for our Fight Creepy Cameras: Organizing Against ALPRs in North Carolina Virtual Town Hall.

• Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer is calling for the city to end its contract with Flock Safety, citing residents’ concerns about the company’s license plate readers and overall surveillance.

  • “I have heard clearly from Asheville residents, and I’m calling on Asheville to turn off the Flock cameras and remove them, which requires terminating the Flock contract,” she said, in part, in her statement. “After careful review and consultation, I have determined it would not be enough to call for a moratorium on the use of Flock technology, because our contract does not allow for the removal of the technology unless we terminate the contract.”

Success! Thank you to all who donated to prevent a family’s eviction and to assist families with school supplies and back to school clothing and shoes.

Donations this week: We continue to collect back to school supplies, including computer headphones, for immigrant families and those receiving meals at the WF Community Table.

• Items can be dropped off on the porch at 9908 Calvados Dr, WF

• This week we have focused on assisting a family where the father and husband recently suffered two broken feet in a car accident that was not his fault.

  • As a result of the accident he is unable to work.

• We provided urgently needed food to the family and connected them local food pantries and the WF Community Table.

• NOW we are focused on raising $525 (half their monthly rent) to assist them. If you are able to help with this effort by making a donation, please send it by Venmo to @Nyya-Simba or send us an email wakeforestindivisible@gmail.com if you would like to donate in another way.

• We also welcome gift cards to businesses such as Walmart that we can give to immigrant families struggling to pay for back to school clothes and shoes for their teenagers.

• Congress is about to give DHS and ICE more power to spy on us with facial recognition technology and automatic license plate readers like Flock.

• The House has already passed this bill and now the Senate is trying to quietly slip it into a must-pass budget bill.

• Tell your Senators Tillis and Budd to vote NO on CORCA.

• Do not hand the Trump administration more power to abuse! This is an important issue that we need to keep our eyes on.

FLOCK CAMERAS

All North Carolinians have a right to privacy without billion-dollar technology companies turning our movements into products for profit.

• Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras are rapidly expanding across our state, allowing law enforcement to track people’s movements in real time without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing.

• Join the ACLU of North Carolina and the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project on August 20th from 6:15-7:30 PM ET for our Fight Creepy Cameras: Organizing Against ALPRs in North Carolina Virtual Town Hall.

  

• This article is from Mark Williams, a NC attorney.

• He struggled initially with the issue of whether to regulate or eliminate automated license plate readers but, as his article explains, finally determined that regulation won’t work.

• New Hanover County’s Sheriff has been responsive to growing concerns about Flock cameras there.

• We asked last year for the WFPD to activate its transparency portal and do the things the New Hanover county sheriff has done.

• So far, WF has done nothing in response to our requests made via the Mayor and at multiple BOC mtgs during public comments.

• WFI is very excited about an event we are planning for the community in the early fall: WF’s first ever “Really Free Market” event! A free market is one we share our abundance with the community. In addition to the folks bringing free items to give away (such as books, food, furniture, records, clothes, seeds, and more), many folks provide a free skill (free haircuts, bike repair, sewing) or offering to the community. Nothing is sold.

• Voter education and voter registration will be a part of our event. Additionally, we look forward to sharing info with the community about our new referral services to free or low cost medical clinics in Durham for those in our community lacking health insurance. Target event date: Saturday, Oct. 3rd.

BRIDGE BRIGADE

• Our monthly protest is part of a network of bridges across Raleigh, Durham, and beyond who are working to spark conversation and connection in the community.

• Many people will honk and wave in solidarity! It’s a family friendly fun event!!

Success! Thanks to your generosity last week, we were able to assist a family in need in avoiding eviction. We partnered with Triangle Mutual Aid in that effort. We also helped two families to be able to afford the back to school clothing, shoes and other supplies they needed for their 6 school-aged children.

Good News! The mutual aid team now has established partnerships with three free or low-cost clinics: Samaritan Health Clinic, NeighborHealth, and Local Start Dental. All are located in Durham and accept our letters of referral for individuals in need of medical care, regardless of immigration status. We continue to try to expand our partnerships and are currently setting up an encrypted bilingual intake/referral request form which we plan to post on our mutual aid page on our website. It is our goal to help those without health insurance be seen at those clinics.

• Trump has defied the American people and bipartisan War Powers resolutions, and our senators must use every tool available to end this unconstitutional war, starting by refusing to give a single dime to fund more death and destruction.

• The crypto regulation bill that wouldn’t actually regulate Trump’s crypto empire at all. The Senate could vote on the CLARITY Act within days. Despite Trump’s $1.4 billion profit from the crypto industry in 2025, this “regulation” bill wouldn’t address Trump’s crypto corruption in any way.

Statewide Town Hall

• On Saturday, August 1, workers, immigrants, and faith leaders from across North Carolina will meet in Greensboro for a Town Hall with statewide candidates to elected office.

• This Town Hall, co-hosted by labor groups, is an opportunity for North Carolina’s working people to ask questions and describe the priorities they’ve developed through months of conversations across the state.

• Candidates to the Senate and State Supreme Court (Roy Cooper and Anita Earls) will share how they plan to fight for North Carolinians.

MUTUAL AID

Success! Thanks to your generosity last week, we were able to provide a walker to a father whose gout flared up so badly he couldn’t walk. We also covered the cost of the 3 medications prescribed to treat that flare-up and enable him to get back to work sooner rather than later. And, we were able to purchase school uniforms for the daughters of 2 families lacking the financial resources to cover those costs on their own (their daughters receive full scholarships to cover the tuition for private school).

• This week we endeavor to cover the following needs:

  • Raise almost $800 rent money by August 5th for one of our families whose father fell severely ill and was only being able to work 8 days last month. He is now being treated for that illness and expects to be able to return to work in the near future.

  • Back to school items needed by August 4th for 2 families we assist.

• Last week, we learned of a young man from Durham named Prisciliano who passed due to acute leukemia

  • He was taken by ICE in June, and shortly after became very sick in custody while simultaneously experiencing the terrible conditions of being in ICE detention.

• It’s hard to see this heartbreaking story and not wonder how different things might have been if he had been diagnosed properly and early, without the stress of detention, surrounded by his family from the start.

• Over 60 attended and WFI staffed the canvassing table at the Raleigh Brewing Company event last Sunday.

• It was a wonderful event that brought numerous Indivisible groups from across the Triangle together to start the sprint toward the November elections.

• Flock Safety is one of the largest ALPR vendors in the U.S.  Here is one more reminder of why Wake Forest residents are pushing back against Flock in our community:

  • CMPD officer accused of illegally accessing FLOCK camera system

• A study released yesterday on Atlanta’s network of surveillance cameras found that the city’s network of more than 28,000 integrated Flock, ring and other cameras did NOT improve the city’s crime clearance rate

Do you have a knee scooter, wheelchair, rollator or walker that you would be willing to loan or donate to one of the families we have been working with for the past 8 months? The father is having a terrible gout flare-up right now and is unable to walk due to the inflammation and pain in his feet. He is literally having to crawl inside his house to get around.

• This week we endeavor to raise a total of $650 to cover the following needs:

  • $400 in rental assistance for one family where the father/husband returned to work but will not receive his paycheck in time for the family to be able to pay all of its rent by the late payment due date.

  • $50, which represents approx a month’s worth of 100% cherry juice, which one father dealing with gout needs to drink for his health. This type of juice is expensive but when we provided it to him in the past, he experienced a significant reduction in inflammation and, along with medication, improved enough that he was able to return to work.

  • $200 so that we can order $100 worth of uniform clothing for each family with a child receiving a full scholarship to a local private school. $100 is the approximate cost of 2 tops and 2 bottoms for one child.

• Trump has defied the American people and bipartisan War Powers resolutions, and our senators must use every tool available to end this unconstitutional war, starting by refusing to give a single dime to fund more death and destruction.

Call your US Senators to urge them to oppose the CLARITY Act

• The crypto regulation bill that wouldn’t actually regulate Trump’s crypto empire at all. The Senate could vote on the CLARITY Act within days. Despite Trump’s $1.4 billion profit from the crypto industry in 2025, this “regulation” bill wouldn’t address Trump’s crypto corruption in any way.

FLOCK CAMERAS

• On Monday night, Granville County’s Sheriff’s Office hosted a 2 hour public forum on Flock cameras that was well-attended both in-person and virtually.

• The Sheriff stated that “This is what democracy is about”, referring to the process of listening to residents before making a decision to sign a contract with Flock.

• Next month we will join with other local groups in WF to call on the WFPD and town leaders to hold a public forum on Flock.

  • If they refuse, we will hold a public forum anyway, without them, as part of the national week of action against automated license plate readers, August 16-22.

WFI is planning a “really free market” event for Wake Forest!

• Neighbors bring things they have to give away and those who need those items can take them home.

• Services (free haircuts, bike repair, sewing or language lessons) can also be given away to neighbors.

We hope to use the free market as an outreach to the under-resourced living in WF, sharing the knowledge we have learned about finding health care for those without health insurance, and also use the event as an opportunity for a voter registration drive and voting outreach.

SCHOOL BOARD ANNOUNCEMENT

Jasmine Zavala, an educator, policy analyst, and small business owner, today filed to run for Wake County Board of Education -District 1. A first-generation college graduate and the daughter of immigrants, Jasmine emphasized the importance of education in her own life in her campaign announcement.

She spoke at No Kings 2 and has generously provided helpful advice to WFI during our know-your-rights outreach to immigrant communities since last fall.

“Education gave me the chance to not only build a better future for myself, but to become an advocate for others. As a classroom teacher, I saw myself in my students and worked tirelessly to help them discover their own potential.” said Zavala, who taught third and fifth grade.

Zavala, a proud graduate of Wake County Schools, lives in Wake Forest with her husband and high school sweetheart. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a degree in Business and Economics from Meredith College. She worked as a policy analyst for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission before becoming a classroom teacher. An active member of her community, she founded Latinos of Wake Forest and currently serves as a volunteer immigration specialist while managing her family’s local restaurants.

• We continue to raise $350 to replace 2 tires for a family whose vehicle tires are in their last days and cannot hold air for a long enough time to drive to a food pantry or a doctor’s appointment.

• We are working to assist another father who was critically injured in a car accident a few months ago.

  • The family has no health insurance and the drunk driver who hit him did not hold car insurance

  • The family cannot continue to afford physical therapy for the father at $300 per session, as the money friends raised through GoFundMe after the accident is now nearly gone.

  • We plan to meet with the compassionate owners of a Wake Forest physical therapy clinic next week in the hopes of working out a less expensive PT option for this man. PT is absolutely vital for him to relearn how to walk.

Closed Hiking Trails

Follow up on the closure of the “Shady 80” trails by the Town of Wake Forest:

• The Town said that the Shady 80 trails were never open to the public. Yet, many residents forwarded Jen email communications with town staff that suggest those staff were very aware the public was using the trails and voiced no objections or other indications that the trails were off-limits to the public. In response to follow up questions Jen then submitted to the Town, town officials admitted that “they were aware that community members were visiting the property. As long as no damage was being done,  no one raised any objections.”

• Try reconciling these statements with the assertions made in the initial press release that began by emphasizing a claim that the town repeatedly posted no trespassing signs at the entrances to the property and those signs were taken down or destroyed. Despite those strong assertions, there is no evidence of any statement issued by the town about those no trespassing signs or the alleged vandalism: no mention in the e-news or press release. And, so far, not a single individual has come forward who says they ever saw such signs at any of the 5 public entrances to the trails. If these facts concern you and the town’s handling of the “Shady 80”  closure seems dishonest to you, we encourage you to contact the town manager, mayor and commissioners and let them know you expect better!

Book Launch Success!

WAKE FOREST GOVERNANCE

Closed Hiking Trails

• The Town of Wake Forest announced June 19th its closing of the miles of trails in the area behind Heritage High School nicknamed the “Shady 80”

  • Jen Amyx has an article forthcoming  in Wake Forest Matters on why the closing of the Shady 80 should anger anyone who cares about truth and transparency in local government

    • She is outraged by the town’s press release and social media posts, which assert:

      • 1. The trails were never open to the public

      • 2. No trespassing signs were posted at trail entrances but repeatedly taken down and destroyed

    • As all regular users of the Shady 80 knew, the only no trespassing signs ever posted in the Shady 80 were NOT ones prohibiting entry but were ones placed along the fences or trees bordering the adjacent private property, directing trail users not to stray off of town property and onto private property

  • On Jan. 6, 2026, Jen Amyx submitted an email to the mayor and commissioners and spoke during a public hearing that evening on the e-bike ordinance changes. In her email and remarks, she stated that she walked the trails regularly from her home with her dogs and had spotted e-scooters on the trails. She therefore asked then to include in the ordinance a prohibition against e-scooters on soft trails. She received no response indicating that the trails were closed; in fact, she received zero response to her email submission and the prohibition against riding e-scooters on soft trails was not included in the ordinance. Yet, the town cited e-scooters on the Shady 80 trails as a key reason for closing them.

Success! We ordered a new window AC unit for one family whose unit was ancient and could not keep up with the heat. Thank you to all who donated to make that possible!

• We continue to raise money to replace 2 tires for a family whose vehicle tires are in their last days and cannot hold air for a long enough time to drive to a food pantry or a doctor’s appointment.

• We continue to try to recover $9,000 in stolen wages for one father from a Wake Forest contractor who hired him but failed to pay

• We are working to assist another father who was critically injured in a car accident a few months ago.

  • The family has no health insurance and the drunk driver who hit him did not hold car insurance

  • The family cannot continue to afford physical therapy for the father at $300 per session, as the money friends raised through GoFundMe after the accident is now nearly gone.

  • We plan to meet with the compassionate owners of a Wake Forest physical therapy clinic next week in the hopes of working out a less expensive PT option for this man. PT is absolutely vital for him to relearn how to walk.

Wake Forest Early Voting Changes

• The NC Bd of Elections decided to change the early voting site in WF from the Northern Wake Regional Center to Joyner Park Community Center.

• Joyner Park Community Center

• Is not accessible by public transportation

• Not next to common destinations like the library post office, etc.

• Close to some of the worst traffic Capital Blvd

• Parking near the community center is typically occupied by those using the children’s playground. Thus, many voters are will need to park at the lower parking lot and walk a distance.

• This makes WFI’s rides to the polls plans even more important!

Closed Hiking Trails

• The Town of Wake Forest announced last week its closing of the miles of trails in the area behind Heritage High School nicknamed the “Shady 80”

• This action shocked many, including Jen who had walked from her home with her dogs on those trails at least once a week for more than 5 years

  • She is writing an article on this issue for Wake Forest Matters and organizing in the hopes of changing the situation.

  • If you ever hiked, ran or cycled on those trails, would you please let Jen know by dropping her an email or voicemail

ACTION ITEMS

SB 153

Today, Republicans in the State House overrode last year’s veto of SB 153. As of today, it is technically law of the land. State Highway Patrol officers are now required to become trained as ICE agents.

• SB 153 requires four state law enforcement agencies to enter into 287g agreements with ICE, which in turn requires their agents to become trained to function as ICE agents who can ask about:

  • country of origin

  • immigration status

  • make immigration arrests

  • update the civil immigration records of North Carolinians driving to work

• It also eliminates access to a wide selection of state-funded public benefits and housing assistance for undocumented immigrants

• explicitly prohibits all UNC schools from operating as “sanctuary universities” or restricting campus police from exchanging citizenship data with federal agents.

• 560,000+ North Carolinian noncitizens will be less safe because of this law

• This is not the end of our efforts to protect immigrant drivers in NC.

Duke Energy

• Duke Energy has filed an application with the NC Utilities Commission seeking rate increases for North Carolina residents over the next two years

• If approved, customers could see another rate hike in 2027 (+12%), followed by a second increase in 2028 (+4%)

  • The proposal would generate an additional $1 billion in revenue over a two-year period

    • In 2025, Duke Energy posted $5B in record profits - an increase of over $400 million from 2024

• Please consider submitting a written consumer statement to the NC Utilities Commission using docket number E-7, Sub 1329

Join WFI and our community on Saturday, June 20th, 11am-4:30pm. North Franklin St. and E. Cedar Ave. at The DuBois Center in Wake Forest for the Juneteenth Celebration!

We will have a canopy with tables at the event and need a rotating group of volunteers who can interact with those stopping by our table and engage in conversation.  

Our focus will be voter registration/ repair and answering questions about voting. We will have a fun voting game for the youth and be giving out future voter stickers and other items to get people, young and old, motivated to vote!

Indivisible North Carolina State Summit

Last Saturday, Jackie and Caera represented WFI at  the Indivisible North Carolina State Summit in Winston-Salem, where they met co-founder and co-Executive Director of Indivisible, Leah Greenberg.

• The summit focused on strategies to help ensure the upcoming election is free and fair and our democracy is preserved

Pride Month Kick-Off

Barbara represented WFI at the PRIDE Month kickoff in Raleigh this past Friday and reported that it was excellent in every way.

• Antonio Arellano, Indivisible’s National Director of Communications, was a very powerful speaker

• North Carolinians will converge on Raleigh for a mass rally sponsored by Common Cause to condemn politicians’ failed priorities and push back against the latest round attacks on our elections at every level

• Anti-voter legislation election tampering by the state auditor, and rampant local efforts to create barriers to casting and counting our ballots

• You must have other DMV business (for ex, driver’s license or registration renewal) and conduct that business first before you will be able to access the voter registration page

MUTUAL AID

Thanks to all for generous donations to aid our Raleigh family dealing with medical issues and struggling to pay their rent. Your generosity enabled us to raise $700, which we paid directly to the landlord on the family’s behalf.

More success! We coordinated delivery of a donated bed to a Raleigh man in need. We also provided a vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies and more to a mother trying to start her own cleaning business to supplement her husband’s income. This family was the victim of wage theft to the tune of $9,000 and asked for our assistance in resolving the situation. We connected them with Siembra NC’s wage theft group and are now working with SiembraNC and the family on coming up with a strategy for applying pressure on the Wake Forest contractor responsible.

Board of Commissioners Vacancy

• The Town of Wake Forest is accepting applications from Wake Forest residents interested in fulfilling the unexpired term of former commissioner Haseeb Fatmi

• Applications due 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17

• Individuals who are at least 21 years old and live inside the Town limits are eligible to apply

• The application includes an essay section (not to exceed 500 words) on why the candidate wishes to serve on the BOC and a field that allows the candidate to upload up to five documents in support of their candidacy

Lowe’s store cameras

Think twice before you shop at Lowe’s, which has granted NC’s State Bureau of Investigation access to its store cameras.

Now the SBI can invade your privacy with Flock cameras placed alongside state roadways as well via Lowe’s cameras that track you in their parking lot.

Flock Cameras

Indivisible groups around the country are working to have local and state governments pull the plug on Flock and other similar AI-powered cameras that serve as tools of the surveillance state. Stay tuned for a “What The Flock?” Public Forum coming soon to Wake Forest.

• The GOP-led State Bureau of Investigation is moving rapidly to try to ensure that AI-powered Flock cameras are everywhere in our state.

  • We are working with other groups across the state to fight back and will be trying to secure an appointment with the Governor to ensure we can count on him to veto such a move.

• At the same time, we continue to call on Mayor Clapsaddle, Town Manager Kip Padgett, the BOC and the WFPD to hold a public hearing on the 24 Flock cameras in Wake Forest.

Surveillance

• Bet you didn’t know that the Trump Administration has informants now spread throughout our community in the form of “Field Liaison Officers”

• These FLOs represent an evolution of the Patriot Act and are individuals in emergency services, as well as public, private and non-profit sectors, and even medical providers who report on “suspicious activity” possibly related to domestic terrorism to the NCSBI (led by GOP hacks loyal to Trump)

  • Since the President now calls anyone opposing him or his policies “domestic terrorists”, this should concern you!

  • WFI will be supporting local journalists in submitting public records requests helping us learn who in our community is part of this 1984-like informant activity

Duke Energy

• Duke Energy has filed an application with the NC Utilities Commission seeking rate increases for North Carolina residents over the next two years

• If approved, customers could see another rate hike in 2027 (+12%), followed by a second increase in 2028 (+4%)

  • The proposal would generate an additional $1 billion in revenue over a two-year period

    • In 2025, Duke Energy posted $5B in record profits - an increase of over $400 million from 2024
